Pretty good, I'd probably listen again if I didn't feel like an asshole for supporting Morrissey

This was alright, some good tracks some shockers. Morrisey being a loser tips him down to 2 instead of the 3 ngl. 2.5/5

First part of this album was lame, soo soo lame, I knew he was a cunt but I didn't know he could make music so lame. The album does pick up toward the end, with some of that smiths magic recaptured in some nice ballads. But that doesn't make up for the truly awful openers. Two and a half. Fave track: I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday

What’s the difference between a Smiths record and a Morrissey record? Whether it’s any good or not. But yeah, seriously thought this was so dribbly and uninteresting compared to what I know and like from The Smiths. Obviously a solo career is a departure from the sounds of the original band, but just did not think any of this sounded particularly good. Fave track: The National Front Disco

I’m a big fan of The Smiths, but I had never heard any of Morrissey’s solo work. I’m not sure if this was the right place to start. I listened to this album twice through and nothing stuck. The verdict’s still out on Morrissey, but this album isn’t anything spectacular.

I was down on this one as well (didn't like the Smiths album) but I didn't rate it straight away and, you know what, it's grown on me a bit. I'd say I still find the majority of the songs whiny, even though I reckon I agree with most of what he's whining about. The music itself sounds less whiny than The Smiths. Not the best Morrissey album (all of his best work is on the smiths other than the odd song honestly) but it is solid still, definitely take the art over the artist, and it’s a very enjoyable listen 4/5

I really enjoy The Smiths and Morrissey was a large part of that (his personality being what it is, but let me just judge his music fro now). But as a solo artist he just doesn't hold up. Making his music rockier doesn't help, since his voice really does work best in a single, specific musical context - apparently the one created by the rest of The Smiths.

Morrissey is a knob but I didn’t dislike the album, I think the production was better than the Smiths albums. Some decent songs on here

"You're Going To Need Somebody On Your Side" and "Glamorous Glue" were real surprises. I really enjoyed those songs a lot. "Tomorrow" was the closest that he came to capturing the Smiths magic. The rest of the album was very unexciting.

Morrissey is great. The Smiths were great. Really enjoyed this album. Couple of catchier poppy songs which sounded great with Morrisseys voice.

Not the worst Morrissey album, like the riff on the first track.

Faintly satisfying but mildly irritating, like peeling dead skin from a toe. One listen down and no noticeable highlights but that could change further down the line. He's the ur-arsehole of people like Pete Doherty and Russell Brand who I love and hate in equal measure. I find conflict and moral quandary really uncomfortable so perhaps I should excise these people from my life and have done with it.

Heard of him, but not familiar with his music. Wasn't able to get through it, though, because I hear he's decided to be a horrible human. I'm on a 1001 album journey. There's no need for me to waste time on someone who I know is terrible. Nobody's perfect, but there's so many more albums! Moving on...

A bit of a mix of rockabilly and 70s glam rock. Sounds similar to the sound on the later albums by Stone Temple Pilots. Was probably an original sounding rock-pop album for its time, and it's very listenable.

Music is great but its hard to get over what a horrible person Morrissey is.

I'm thoroughly annoyed by the cover art and title so we'll see how this goes. Of course it rocks. Artful and surprisingly subdued, I particularly appreciated the titles and overall flow. I'm getting big David Bowie vibes. 3.5/5 stars because patriarchy.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this album. I don't dislike it, it's definitely listenable, but I don't think it's for me. It sounds very English, like it has that sound where you can tell he listened to David Bowie growing up and wanted to make a more modern sounding kinda thing. None of the songs are bad like I really wouldn't mind listening to them again they just kinda don't hit for me at all.

Never really been interested in Morrissey but lets see! Not convinced maybe on some - not on all.

Given Morrissey's later views, it is very hard to know if tracks such as National Front Disco should be read as satirical or sympathetic. It is disappointing to see Morrissey's decline as a meaningful figure in contemporary music, because his ability to find talented musicians and producers to work with post-Smiths was exemplary as this album shows. It fair bops along with excellent guitar work with Morrissey's lyrics and delivery as impish and sarcastic as ever. Dare I say this - am I starting to enjoy more Morrissey solo albums than Smiths albums? Can this be right?

5.5/10. i don’t care about the british being concerned about themselves. i love the top track, it’s surfy sound and acknowledgement of near begrudging relationship between speaker and listener. i need you and you need me and we’re all the other has so let’s get going. we’ll let you know feels like a better glam glue, especially with the sonic dissonance and distortion, a feeling of only wanting to share pain with the dedicated who care about them as people, and acknowledging the pain they may inflict as a consequence of the repetition in their lives creating tension we hate it when is crabs in a bucket you’re the one for me is actively knocking the album down many pegs. these guys just can’t help themselves. the final three home stretch is a powerhouse

Eh. Lots of things here that I enjoy, slightly ruined by things I don't enjoy. Musically, I think this is a bit above average for me.

This is the second morrissey album I have gotten and by far this one was much better than the first. Although not something I would listen to regularly, I actually had moments of enjoyment while listening to this one. Overall not bad but exceptionally great.

The sweet voice of the tormented arrogance delights us with one lovely album. Great harmonies and melancholic tunes. It’s like an unexpected kiss: quick, not at its full potential, and with a weird posture.

This wasn't terrible, but it must be said that any enjoyment I got from this album was down to the backing band and not Morrissey himself. Best track: We'll Let You Know

from Morrissey’s fourth studio album we once again learn he: 1) feels sorry for himself 2) hates anyone who isn’t british 3) loves fat chicks unfortunately, for as iconic as Morrissey is, really only in context of The Smiths does his voice ring with an indisputable magic. post The Smiths however, without the cosmic chemistry of Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, and Mike Joyce, everything Morrissey does is just derivative and makes one long for a bygone era. there’s some memorable moments, sure, but gosh can you just imagine how much better this would be if he wasn’t such an insufferable prick and didn’t destroy one of the greatest bands of all time? anyway it’s a decent album.

Didn't feel all that different from a Smiths album. I like The Smiths but this was slightly underwhelming. It was pretty good overall but nothing stood out, besides the usual cheeky lyrics.

Not that bad: yk what I don’t mind Morrisey for the music that he produces. The jangly guitar and vocals all sounded familiar and I had a general consensus that I enjoyed the album. Don’t get me wrong there wasn’t a bunch of stand out tracks but I wouldn’t say it’s bad at all.

This is my second album by Morrissey (third of you count The Smiths) on this generator. The first record was Viva Hate, which was gloomy and depressing. This album was similar, but not as heavy on the doom and gloom. This record was more indie rock focused, whereas the first album was more like goth rock. Morrissey still hasn't cheered up on this record (came out 4 years after Viva Hate (my first reviewed album)). Apparently he is a bit of a tool, which comes across in his lyrics, which sound preachy and pretentious by times. Overall, not a bad record, but I found myself constantly zoning him out. His voice is just too moany for my tastes. Plus, it's a beautiful day outside, I don't feel like moping about listening to fucking Morrissey all day. Cheer up dude, have a burger ffs. Favourite songs: Glamorous Glue, The National Front Disco, You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side Least favourite songs: We'll Let You Know, I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday 3/5

Morrissey never reached the peaks of the Smiths. Musically proficient with quirky lyrics but it’s hard to separate the art from the artists frankly abhorrent views.

Very upbeat for sad bit music

Shouldn't read other reviews before I've finished the whole album but strikes me as those who give a poor score are due to issues unrelated to the music. I'm on and off with Morrissey's music generally, however this is a big yes from me. 4.4

Morrissey shifts his style and incorporates glam rock, surf rock, and rockabilly, cranking up the distortion and having some sick solos. Still has the jangles, his whiny vocals, and his introspective lyrics. Unlike Viva Hate, he actually has a new hard style that often works really well for him, and he's pretty consistent in all of these tracks. There are some times where I feel they clash, like "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful." There's usually something I like about each track, typically the guitar solos, even if I feel some of them are forgettable. He still has the energy and spunk, unlike later albums like Vauxhall and I and You Are the Quarry. It's probably my favorite of his solo work, a really pleasant surprise from a record I had fairly low expectations for. Favorites: You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side, Glamorous Glue, Seasick yet Still Docked

I'm not a Smiths fan enough to be really interested in Morrissey's solo career, which just sounds like a less interesting version of his old band to me. It's not bad though, just... not something I'll want to return to.

Instrumentals were good but I didn't like the vocals. The didn't add much and were often more distracting that impactful to the songs. Still wasn't a bad album but nothing outstanding here in my opinion.

I felt like Morissey was speaking to me on a personal level in “You’re the One for Me, Fatty” But also this gives me major Barenaked Lady vibes which I loved.

I was a little too late and a little too I to metal for Morrissey. Hearing this now, I would have been I to it for sure. This is legit a great record. Some dull spots here and there. (we'll let you know, certain people I know.) It would be a 4 for me. But fuck Morrissey. I totally get the shame fans feel as I have it too with Marilyn Manson. Why do these guys have to be such wankers? One star because of the man.

Zeus: Are the wickedest queens always the comeliest? Hercules: Usually I mean, talk about an asinine personality and attitude wrapped in sexy packaging. Morrissey is so yummy on this album cover, looking like a real snack. But then he lives to instigate bullshit and it’s just so immature and painful to watch. I love and appreciate his immense lyrical talent, and I feel like I could empathize with him, but then I read quotes of the things he’s said and I’m repulsed by his wretched insistent cuntiness. The heart wants what it wants though, and ultimately, mine wants witty, wry and darkly humorous lyrics, something Morrissey always delivers.

A pretty solid, consistent set of Morrissey songs. None of them really sound like classics though, and (maybe as a result), neither does the album.

Sometimes this project requires significant personal mastery to get through an albums. I was barely able to hang on through We'll Let You Know. I don't like the vibe, I don't enjoy how he puts phrases together or his point of view, and I hate his voice. I recognize that this album is not completely without merit; it's better than some of the Smiths the list has had me suffer through. But it sure isn't for me.

I can never tell whether Morrissey is serious or taking the piss, but it kinda makes him cool. Music was catchy in that UK pub rock way that I'm sure Morrissey actually hates, and I'm sure there are a kazillion instances of him talking shit about other bands that sound exactly like this. Lyrics are full of his usual oddball social commentary and nihilism. There was one line that said "we don't vote conservative, never have ... everyone lies" haha. Nailed it. You know what, I'm actually gonna get out the 5/5 for this one. Fucken brilliant.

On the one hand, Morrissey spoke out for sensitive introverts with songs such as "Big Mouth Strikes Again," "Ask," and "How Soon Is Now?" But then he has to go and spoil it all with "You're the One for Me, Fatty," and being a big racist bellend.

Oh crap, this is not what I thought Morrissey sounded like!

Never got into the Smiths when I was growing up, and certainly never listened to Morrissey in any depth. In fact, I had him blocked on Spotify. The tunes have their moments, although the album doesn't start well. When it gets a bit more jangly towards the end it's better probably, although he can be a little turgid at times and comes across as a right twat. Not terrible, but it didn't change my view of Morrissey, which is a shame. Perhaps when I get to some Smiths it'll be Johnny Marr who grabs me and makes me listen.

It's Morrissey and here I am deciding between 4 and 5 stars!!! This is what happens when Mick Ronson is the producer. This album rocked! The mopey songs just add counterbalance.

Great artist, meh album

Utterly boring except for the first song. I didn't like The Smiths and I don't really like Morrissey. It's not completely bad just not doing anything for me.

Well, I've never heard about Morrissey before. It is my first album. I don't understand all the haters in the ratings before, it is not bad. I have a main problem with the mastering of the album, but these are enjoyable tunes.

Well his politics are starting to show and he was clearly always insufferable. Like Tomorrow's repeated plea "TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME." Nah, bro, it's cool you love yourself more than enough for the rest of the world. here's the thing though, it is a great voice that finds odd ways around the instrumentation behind him and Ronson and the Smith's like band produce a very appealing Glam sound. The problem is Morrissey. I could listen to this all day long if it all didn't start to become distasteful around the end of "We'll Let You Know" peaking at a feverish rate with "We Hate It..." Such talent wasted. ugh. At least other seemingly insufferable front men like Sting and Bono aren't showcasing the worst of humanity. And while Father John Misty may (I italicize because I am incredulous) be doing it all as a show, it is clear now that there was no facade or affectation here, Morrissey was telling us all about himself. He's clever. He's talented. He's also the worst of us.

Not exactly aggressive, but bold and a bit pompous in the best rockstar tradition. The instrumentation is skillful, the lyrics are snide and writerly, and the production is very good. However, too many of the songs sound too much alike. I’d definitely buy this album, but I can’t say it’s essential.

This record certainly has more enjoyable songs than Vauxhall, but it’s still just not for me. His voice is more bearable here though.

Hm, kind of The Smiths but shit and some more up-beat tracks at the start of the album. Also though I can't stop thinking about how he is a bit of a dickhead and a conspiracy spreader, antivaxxer kind of annoying bad person... Detracts from the listening experience which wasn't that great already.

I'm bummed. Not that this album doesn't have a few highlights that make it worthwhile to listen to (opener "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" and closer "Tomorrow" easily come to mind here). That being said, I just can't bring myself to forgive the Moz for pandering to the far-right parties of his country these days (all those UKIP and Brexiter morons of all stripes can eat shit, as far as I'm concerned...). Besides, one should never forget his unsavory public statements about immigrants "threatening" pure Englishness, or his incredibly dumb take about the slaughter of those Norwegian youngsters by a crazy far-right lunatic. And all those rancid "ideas" now polluting his mind (along with our eyes and ears) started here, with "The National Front Disco", the fourth track of this LP... Make no mistake, " The National Front Disco" is still a nice track, at least musically speaking. Yet it's quite a problematic one when it comes to its lyrics. And *now*, a few decades later, it's pretty clear that Morrissey's subsequent allegations that those admittedly ambiguous lyrics didn't mean he condoned fascist ideas were just a goddamn *act*. The man's downward spiral into despicable political stances started here, enough said. To be clear, my point is not to "cancel" the artist, whatever that word means. Nothing can erase the impact Morrissey has had on modern music, thanks to his tenure with the Smiths. But just like Kanye West, another "problematic" artist whose albums I really, really loved once, you can't take the stupid stuff that now comes out of his mouth lightly. So I would be lying if I said that listening to his solo albums doesn't make me feel queasy and ill-at-ease (that very same feeling I have with Kanye's records now). "Tomorrow, Will It really come? And if it does come? Will I still be human" Not in the full meaning of the word, Steven Patrick Morrisey, not in the full meaning of the word. But maybe becoming a sad caricature of who you once were is only "human" after all... Now add to this the fact that *Your Arsenal* is not a perfect record anyway, and here's how you can use his spot in this list for an artist that would deserve it much more than him. It's not easy to step in Johnny Marr's shoes anyway--not that the Moz's collaborators didn't try hard to do a good enough job on this one. Still giving an incredibly generous 3/5 grade to this album because of the music and songwriting, which is good overall, even if not always stellar. And as for half of those 3/5 albums, I won't include this LP in my own list of keepers. Let the hardcore fans talk about it on their own. As far as I'm concerned, I'm moving on. Number of albums left to review: 600 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 190 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 90 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 120 (including this one)

It’s a decent entry into the Morrissey's solo endeavors. No truly standout tracks but the collection as a whole is very much worth a listen.

I've always liked the Smiths in moderation and I've respected Morrissey's solo work at a distance. Vauxhall and I was the only album I've owned and I did enjoy it. This was a real pleasant surprise that broke a lot of biases that I had about Morrissey's music. I'm not going to say I loved the whole album, but I really enjoyed the whole album end to end. I'm getting the feeling a lot of people hate this man for some reason. Idk, ignorance is bliss. I'm here for the music, not the drama.

Surprenament pas si pire, mais beaucoup de pièces sonnaient trop pop typique de l'époque à mon goût. L'album démarre avec un banger mais c'est un peu up and down à partir de là. On dirait que la voix de Morrissey est moins pénible sur cet album, peut-être je devrais revisiter The Queen Is Dead.

Really good

One of his three top solo albums (Your Arsenal, Vauxhall and the best, but unappreciated Southpaw Grammar). Some nice rock songs, lyrics original as always, but also the beautiful "Seasick, Yet Still Docked" and We'll Let You Know and the brilliant last song Tomorrow. Tomorrow, will it really come. And if it does come, will I still be human. Loneliness at its peak. A shame the later albums became more of a parody of what he made in his best years.

Ну мы тип слушали уже дважды Смитов. Каких-то принципиальных отличий я как-то не почувствовал. Да, может быть звук стал чуть-чуть потяжелее моментами. А где-то наоборот слишком ушёл в попсу. Короче это больше звучит как классика, чем Смиты, но их стиль всё равно узнаваем. За третий альбом тоже четверку ставить? Ну, может хватит уже... P.S. We are the last truly British people you will ever know - "чуваки из глобала" пишут, что это расизм. Посмеялся, но задумался.

I really like the smiths, so thought this would be up my street..... Nothing particularly grabbed me here. It doesn't have the humour (intentional or not) that the smiths has. Nor the angst and melancholy that I like. Also no Johnny Marr either! I don't dislike the sound, just not what I thought it would be. I'm fairly sure Morrissey has better albums than this, perhaps they'll turn up. He's also done and said a fair amount of dodgy stuff in recent years... Can usually take what he says with a pinch of salt as that's what he does, but not so much recently. But art from artist and all that

Punchy but not many hits.

A rockabilly-influenced album with a lot of melodic songs on it. The production work on the album is great. Morrissey's best solo album perhaps.

To paraphrase Morrissey, some songs are bigger than others, some songs mothers are bigger than others.

Not one of my favorite Morrissey albums, but he is still an artist where his music is eclectic and passionate with wonderful & introspective lyrics. It's unfortunate that he's leaned heavily into a bit of a twat persona, but i am still thoroughly engaged in his music.

I’ve already reviewed a few albums by The Smiths, but this will be my first review of Morrissey by himself. My thoughts so far have been that it has been decent music but with annoying lyrics and vocals. Let’s see if this is more of the same. Songs I already knew: We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful Favourites: We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful, You’re The One For Me Fatty I hate the fact that I’m writing this because Morrissey seems to be a horrible, racist, mess of a human, but this album was really good. So much better that I expected it to be. I didn’t find his lyrics quite as annoying here as I did with The Smiths albums, but maybe I’m just in a good mood. The overall music just felt it had more going on, and had a bit more attitude. If you can separate the art from the artist, and if you haven’t heard this album before, definitely give it a listen.

At first I thought that this might be the album that finally clicked with me and Morrissey. It started out with some bangers that didn't feel like typical Morrissey. If this album ended after 2/3 of the way through, I would have given this at least 3 stars. But, in typical Morrissey fashion, he ruined it with his crooning in the final stretch. Alas, this is why I don't like his music.

I enjoyed this. I love the Smiths and this was a strong offering. Putting any current feelings about Morrissey aside.

Noisy, Boring, Narcissistic. Pass

Your Arsenal is the third album by English singer Morrissey. This glam rock and Britpop album received critical acclaim - including a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album - for Morrissey's move from indie pop to a more muscular rock sound. It was fun listening to this album while doing some work, but I wouldn't necessarily listen to it again.

A few years into his solo career, we get to inspect the all-important question: was Steven Patrick Morrissey the heart and soul of The Smiths? No. Well, not really. Morrissey's lyrics and mood were still an integral part of The Smiths, along with his ability to write hooks, but the production is definitively not as good. While Smiths records were beautiful and intriguing, Your Arsenal stands as a generic rock record that happens to have Morrissey's vocals atop. Perhaps the most interesting part is the sampling on I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday, which feeds the song a rich ambience even before Morrissey opens his dumb mouth. Man I can't stand Morrissey. He's such a moron. He wrote some of the best songs of the 20th century and now he's an old jerk of a man. I hope he retires and communes with nature so that he leaves us all alone. Goodbye!

There's something I really like about this guy's music but I can't put my finger on it. Music and vocals sound simple but comes across as good music. I did like the Smiths album I got a little better than this solo album

Morrissey is a dicksplash. This is, at least, a slight diversion from the dull-as-ditchwater stuff he's spewed out on other albums. However, he's still whiney, and he's still a dicksplash.

Huge Smiths fan and this is one of Morissey's finest solo efforts. The opener is very catchy and sets the bar high for the rest of the set. Fortunately this album barely dips in quality. Mark Ronson's involvement is also a very welcome one, the Bowie influence on the songs is very cool! Just a great record with high replay value! Key tracks: You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side, Glamorous Glue, We'll Let You Know, We Hate It When Our Friends Become Succesful, You're The One For Me, Fatty, Seasick, Yet Still Docked, 8 out of 10

I’m so sick of the egregious over-representation of Morrissey on this list my immediate reaction was 2 stars, no matter what. But I have to come to terms with the fact that my issues with him are mostly not about music, at which he’s certainly competent. Alternately (and sometimes simultaneously) maudlin and self-important lyrics are the primary sins here as always.

Enjoyed this...always like the Smiths but haven't always like Morrissey solo. This was a good one. 4/5

The signs of Morrissey's curmudgeonly racism are beginning to show by this album. The good stuff is excellent, but I can hardly bear to listen to him now, knowing what he has become and almost certainly was all along.

Starts a bit meh but the last few tracks are solid

why is it whenever i think about a specific album or a specific artist and when i'm going to get them, they get generated for me the next day? in this case i was wondering about when i would get my first morrissey solo album its good, but i prefer his work with the smiths

Of all the Smiths/Morrisey albums (I think this is the 4th) that have been served me, this is the best so far, in my opinion, and really the only one I've enjoyed.

Uncanny. I've just had a Smiths album and commented that I wouldn't judge them on Morresey being such a twat. Well here we are Marr-less. Interesting. Its an OK...solid...would i listen to it again , probably no.

What a great project! What a blend of sounds, the guitar sounds so awesome, and he sings so elegantly on every song. The production is on point as well.

Another Morrissey Album and another good time. Although this time it was less brit-poppy and more rocky/rockabilly, it was again a decent performance. Again, not standout song that drives the album after a overall good album with a perfect runtime

If you've heard one Smiths song you've heard this entire album before. I'm not a huge Smiths fan and this guy really is one note in terms of music. Every song sounds the same and he can't seem to be diverse at all. But at least it's short and isn't offensive (unlike the man himself). Generic and bland. 2.5/5

When I started this, I was very much in the mind of "oh great, Morrisey". But the first song blew me away. Then it quickly degenerated into traditional moody whinging from the godfather of Emo.

This a tough one. I still don't have an answer on where you separate art from the artist. Even before all the more recent stuff, I wasn't the biggest fan of Morrissey the person, but there are Smiths songs that I just love and when hearing them they take me back to a different time in my life. At the end of the day it really has nothing to do with him, and more for my own experience. I never really listened to much of his solo stuff, but this album was pretty good and I really liked a few of his songs. The "Fatty" song I get is tongue in cheek, but still just doesnt sit well. I've checked out on Morrissey a bit after the algorithmic glitch which has frontloaded him these past weeks. I feel like this list is overstating the cultural importance of a midly influential group. That said, I found this more melodic and listenable than the last one we had to listen to.

Gotta say, I dont think I needed to listen to this before I never can again! I like the Smiths’ music, and I like a few Morrissey solo songs. This album is just fine, however. A couple of songs I really like, maybe less than half of them. The others have a mix of interesting lyrics that only Morrissey can write but are otherwise not very distinctive songs of his, in my opinion. I’ll totally give this another listen, but this doesn’t seem like it would make a GOAT list. The Wiki says this album was praised for its mix of rockabilly, glam, and rock, but I feel like that describes the Smiths already, so I’m unsure about what’s really new here. “I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday” is an undeniable beautiful tune, that is true! Beyond this, feeling uninspired!

"Your Arsenal" is the third studio album from Morrissey and features a new band. The album was produced by Mitch Ronson (former David Bowie guitarist) and you can tell with influences and homages to David Bowie, T. Rex and even The Smiths. The music is more rockin' than his two previous albums which is obvious on his first few songs. Of course, Morrissey, during this time, was involved in controversy with accusations of Nazi racism with one of the songs, "The National Front Disco," wishing a variety of deaths (to The Smiths' biographer Johnny Roman's and wishing a motorway pileup) and performed wearing the Union Jack Flag with a back drop of two skin-head girls. Regardless, the music on this album is great: rockin, tuneful, lyrics, a band. And, the title "Your Arsenal" has a possible triple entendre: the power you command, pun on on 'your arse an' all,' and a jab at the Arsenal football team fandom. The album starts out with two hard rocking songs. Great wah-wah wobbly guitar reminiscent of Guns N' Roses begins "Your Gonna Need Someone on Your Side." A "Peter Gunn" rockabilly bass comes in and now the music sounds like X (the band)...that's a good thing. Morrissey's lyrics are probably about offering a friend help who doesn't want it. The second single "Glamorous Girl" continues the muscular rock with great guitar in the intro and throughout. Moz first sung about the queen being dead years before and now it's London. He is apparently angry with his home country. The second half of the album continues the barrage of good songs. The first single "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" again has a great guitar intro (pattern here?) And just a killer melody and chorus. It's more in the pop-rock category and has sort of soft-loud-soft dynamics which I'm a sucker for. Self-explanatory lyrics. "Tomorrow" ends the album and is one of my favorite Morrissey tunes. Another great pop song melody. A classic Smith's sounding song. Is it about not wanting to leave the morning after spending the night with someone, just getting old or both? I have to admit this is the first Morrissey album I've listen to in its entirety. I have no idea why? I've listened to all The Smiths' albums and have heard most of these songs. Anyway, it's a great album and in the conversation for some of his best work.

This guy is fucking trash.

This was a pretty solid Morrissey album. I have a limited subset of his songs in my general rotation and none of these are them. Mostly rock and with predictable rhythms, but with that trademark voice that I like and the rambling and the weird noise that I also like. Overall, just a solid album. My favorite part was the piano nod at the very end to Sing me to Sleep, a great song and worthy of the musical hat tip.

I notice that my (rare and inconsistent) scores correlate quite closely to whether I can play the songs on the guitar. A low bar to be sure. This was one of the most well-worn albums of my college years, and most often listened to in my car on trips to and from Richmond/NoVA—side A of the tape was this album and side B was Bona Drag and I’d get through both on the ride. Clearly I’m dating myself because today, that same trek would require at least 4 albums. Or the Hamilton soundtrack 1.5 times. I listened to this album so much that the tape sounded warped, so I had to invest 15 of my 1993 dollars in a CD which limited my listening to my one and only CD played in my dorm. Hence the driving soundtrack. I originally started this review by recounting what each song evokes for me. But then I realized that that’s just an n of one and won’t mean much to anyone else. As I listen to this album with 47-year-old ears, I get why it’s not that impressive to others. But my 18-year-old ears couldn’t get enough. I like the rockabilly sound of some of the songs (You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side, the lullaby of others (We’ll Let You Know), the battlecry of I Know it’s Gonna Happen. We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful was, embarrassingly, resonated for me well into my 20s. But the perfect juxtaposition of yester-Bethany and present-day-Bethany is You’re the One for Me Fatty. My self-conscious, distorted body-imaged-self found this to be my personal theme song at the time. I even think my stupid college boyfriend “jokingly” serenaded me with this song. I don’t know what the hell it’s supposed to mean. But since Queen says Fat-Bottomed Girls make the rocking’ world go ‘round, I’m gonna go with England is more accepting of all body types (please don’t ruin this for me). But honestly I love the drums and little guitar riff. I guess music, at least for me, is all about relating to something in the songs. And I need a lot of time with an album to find the connection. Kind of like friends. Luckily I spend a lot more time with people than I do on this activity or I’d live the sad little life that Mr. Asshole Morrissey is living now.

I don't like Morrissey's voice. So kudos to "Your Arsenal" for getting at least a few songs in before the vocals started to grate on me. Maybe it's not his voice itself, but how he uses it, often in a whine that exaggerates his accent (like when he pronounces last "laaahssst"). Some songs had pretty good guitar that I enjoyed until the vocals and lyrics got in the way. Don't remember which ones... it was a week ago. Maybe I should stop listening to 80% an album and then forgetting to finish and review it.

I’m gonna need to figure out the secret to Morrisey’s success on this album. He’s gonna have to give up the goods. Either that or maybe the record company is gonna have to tell me. I was gonna say Mick Ronson, the producer, was gonna have to let me know, but he died a year after this album and can’t. The real secret are songs with “Gonna” in the title as they are the strengths of this album (Your Gonna Need Someone On Your Side, I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday). Or better yet, Mark E. Levin is the success engine because he wrote the music for both those songs, the only two he wrote on the album. There are some other solid songs on this album too like Glamorous Glue and Certain People I Know. I would venture to say that there are not any truly bad songs on the album. Just not enough other solid ones to lift this album higher. Looking back at The Smiths reviews, I hated Morrisey’s voice while I enjoy it here. Im not sure what changed, but this is by far Morrisey’s best performance I’ve heard so far. I definitely like this album and would listen again. 3 & 1/3 star.

Good, not great.

So there is a period of time where Morrissey's popularity makes sense, and maybe 1992 was it. His vocals remain reminiscent of the 80s, singing from the top of the mouth rather than from the throat or gut, and musically the album is melodically pleasing. It would be objective to say that this album is good and worth listening to, except that the stench of Morrissey's musical messiah complex still manages to linger. If the listener can compartmentalize Morrissey from his own work on this album, one should have fun with it.

While I've never been a fan of The Smiths, I really enjoyed this album. Morrisey's voice is pleasant, and lyrically and melodically, it's re-listenable.

I quite like the album sonically but i can’t really try to ignore who the artist is. Especially not with the lyrics of some tracks like ”We’ll let you know” and ”The national front disco”(i know the latter one is supposedly satire but seeing morriseys own opinions on the topic kinda blurs the line) so i guess i’ll give it a 3/5 but its honestly closer to a 3.5

Nice to hear some raw rock morrisey

Well, this is surprisingly up tempo and un-morose for Morrissey. I choose to give all the credit to Mick Ronson. But I don't hate this.

I kind of stopped paying attention to what Morrissey was up to after his first 2 solo albums. Turns out that was a mistake, because Your Arsenal is pretty fantastic. The album starts off with a surprisingly harder edge than you would expect, which really works for Morrissey. He is more in tune with his band on this album than he had been up to that point and it's probably a more cohesive group of songs as a result. Morrissey's self deprecating yet acidic humor remains, but there's something else as well. There's disappointment and regret, as well as a vulnerability that feels honest, making these some of the most relatable songs I've ever heard from him. The album lacks a strong pop single a la "Suedehead" or "Everyday is Like Sunday," but taken on the whole, this is an excellent collection of songs. This may in fact be his best album. Fave Songs: I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday, You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side, Glamorous Glue, We'll Let You Know, Certain People I Know, Seasick, Yet Still Docked

I don't really care about other people's politics, but when you have to shake your head because of lyrics like "At heart, what's left, we sadly know that we are the last truly British people you'll ever know" something is definitely wrong there. The music was very enjoyable!

Wow, how did I miss this one for thirty years? I guess I just lost track of Morrissey at some point. This album rocks, and Morrissey sounds great on it. I loved it.

I know what Morrissey's vocal stylings sound like, but I can't think of any Morrissey tune that I know...certainly nothing on this album. I didn't think that I would like a full album of Morrissey, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Some rockin' and some droning, but in total, it was okay.

I've never been a huge fan of The Smiths and didn't expect to like this much but then You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side started with Peter Gunns a-blazin' and made me all, like, whoa. I also loved the next track, the driving Glamorous Glue, and the last two tracks I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday and Tomorrow. The tracks in the middle were more what I expected and kind of mushed all together for me. But the tracks I liked were enough to push this from a 3 to a 4.

When I first saw this next listen I wasn’t thrilled. Morrissey conjures images of too-cool college music I never really related to. I’m not in the mood for angsty, miserable music… It was with some surprise that I enjoyed the first track, “You’re Gonna Need Someone On Your Side.” It rocked more than I expected - I enjoyed it. Then “Glamorous Glue” sounded a bit more rock than I expected. The third song, which was closer to what I had initially expected, was still pretty good if not my favorite. So what’s this? I’m enjoying Morrissey? I loved “The National Front Disco.” What? You can dance to Morrissey? “We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful” gave me a chuckle. Not entirely sure what to make of “You’re The One For Me, Fatty”… but it is catchy. “I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday” is downright optimistic… What’s this? A hopeful Morrissey song?! And closing the album with a request for a hug? It looks like I… misjudged. I liked this a whole lot more than expected. I still could use a bit more vocal variety, and I’m not sure I can distinguish a lot of the songs as they kind of blend together, but I enjoyed this. Maybe not something I’ll often play from start to finish often but I wouldn’t object to it, and there are a lot of songs I will happily revisit again.

Love The Smiths and earlier Morrissey but struggled to get into this album

I feel like Morrissey would be great to see live, but no songs really stood that much out from eachother. I take that back, "We'll Let You Know" is very nice. Ok they're all very different actually goddamn. And otherwise I enjoyed it all. I gotta go and listen to some more The Smiths. "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" got me in a fucking trance damn. 4, could be a 5 actually, na 4 is good. The way the songs get better over time reminds me of Arctic Monkeys ngl. Damn, people really hate this guy, and well, most of the lyrics on this album does make him seem like an asshole who's bitter that his band left him. it's great music though. 5 lol

The Smiths on tosi lähellä mun herttaa ja toki esim Morriseyn Viva Hate on todella upee tuotos myös soolopuolelta. Vaikka itse jäbästä voi olla mieltä niin musa tällä levyllä ei ihan saanut mua kiljumaan riemusta. Hienoja melodioja ja muutamii lyyrisii koukkuja mutta ei kyl tarjonnu mulle kauheesti uutta. 3/5

Ihan ok, mutta eipä tässä ole mitään mieleenpainuvaa. 2/5. Pakko kans avautua, että hiukan haisee taas brittibias läpi, kun tämäkin tungettu listalle. Morrisseyltä on varmasti anyway mukana Viva Hate ja pari Smithsin levyä, niin oliko tämä nyt sitten sen arvoinen, että vei jonkun eksoottisemman lätyn paikan. "No M nyt vaan on viiden levyn arvoinen tapaus". Hohhoijaa. Jos kuuntelee vaikka Bowien ja Smithsin parhaat, niin mitä tämä enää tarjoaa?

Morriseylla on hieno ääni ja fraseeraus, mikä luo teksteihin viiltävän sävyn. Myös musan puolesta aika jees. En tiiä annanko näitä liikaa mut 4/5

Listened Before: N I came in with preconceived notions about Morrisey and I have to say, I was a bit wrong. Pros: This was more of a rocker than I thought I would be getting from the former Smiths frontman. The first song, especially, was almost a grunge song. I can say I actually liked the rest of this well enough to listen a second time. His voice pretty great as well.. Cons: Morrisey comes off pretentious in everything I've ever listened to. This album is no different. However, I think maybe if I lighten up a bit, it comes off a bit more just sarcastic. The cover of this album is ridiculous, too. Apparently he thought he was pretty hot shit. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: "You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side", "Certain People I Know"
