Some parts are nice but utterly forgettable. I couldn’t even tell when Spotify fell off the album and started shuffling across other generic UK bands that sounded equally bland.

I feel sad for the anguished, love starved Morris, see. My take away from Your Arsenal is that he needs to add several new/different tunes to his arsenal. He now gets classified as a “one sound” not so wonderful musician and I just listened to the same song for 40 minutes. And this song is not as good as his previous efforts. (2,3*s) Unfortunately, we’re still not done with this Brit.

Your Arsenal had potential, too bad Morrissey had to ruin it. Started out pretty in with the heavy guitar on the first few songs but it unraveled quickly. Good finish though with top track "Tomorrow." Too much Morrissey on the list. This one lands between Quarry and Viva Hate at 2.08 stars. Not really the one for me, Fatty...

This list creator has way too much of a hard on for Morrissey/Smiths. There's only so much of his schtick that I can take. Your Arsenal was a little bit more rock and roll but Morrissey's vocal styling still brings it into the same realm as prior entries. Had this not landed within a couple weeks of a couple other Morrissey albums I might not have minded it but unfortunately its a victim of timing and overexposure. There's altogether too much Morrissey on this list and Your Arsenal and future entries are going to suffer as a result. In small doses I don't think I mind it, but as I listen to more albums there are diminishing returns and its actually hurting my opinion of the tunes. I'm really burned out on him already and suspect there might still be more coming. 1.87 stars

I don't know. Maybe it's too precious. Maybe I just don't love his artistic voice and literal voice as a singer/song writer. I’ve also read that he’s a bit of a contrarian xenophobic knob, but I wasn't privy to that before the listen so i can't even blame that for shaping my experience The Smiths had Marr and it was enough shred to balance it all out for me. This isn't big enough, bold enough, or groovy enough to grab hold of me.

Generally just a bit samey and boring, 2/5. Opening and closing tracks were the highlights of the album for me.

Did NOT expect this to open with some bastardization of surf rock! First two tracks were almost good enough that I worried I might like something this POS created. Good thing he lived up to my initial expectations by filling the rest of the album with the usual whiney, self indulgent, melancholic crap.

so boring and musically uninspired. morrissey has a great voice, aside from being the most fuckin annoying guy ever. but like many have pointed out in their reviews, his solo stuff makes it painfully obvious that the heart of the smiths and the talent of the smiths largely belonged to his less annoying, more humble band mates.

100% the first time hearing any of these songs. Not at all a fan of Morrissey or The Smiths. Nonetheless, here we go. This album is okay. The vocals are droning. Not enough variety it them to keep me engaged. He is a good singer of course. I don't know, I think I need to listen to his works without knowing its him to judge it properly. But honestly, for me, everything on this album is just okay. 2.3/5

Your Arsenal is about Morrissey's objection to the "Americanization" of British culture. The defining element of his sound is still his distinct baritone, and the melodrama in his lyrics. The strength of his voice only goes so far; when Morrissey wanders into the histrionic, these songs become hard to take. The self-pity - "and all of my life, no one has ever given me anything" - and the drama - "my love is as sharp as a needle in the eye" - are too much.

Ok songs. I can’t stand the guys voice droning on and on. I can’t listen to the Smiths either.

Eh. Perfectly fine. Just nothing really jumped out at me. Never will feel the need to listen again.

An odd one this. It pulls from a bunch of different genres (glam rock, 80s indie, rockabilly) but doesn't really excel at any of them. The more indie leaning stuff in particular makes it clear how much The Smiths needed the whole band - and particularly Johnny Marr's guitar. The slower, quieter tracks towards the end work best here as they at least allow Morrissey's vocals to shine (and when he's not buried beneath guitars he still sounds great).

Another cruel reminder of how good J Marr is. Morrisey's lyrics with a rockabilly backing band is not a combination that works well. We know he's a twat, but he's usually a better songwriter than this effort. A few middling songs, some questionable lyrics, and far too much twang is a painful reminder of what we lost when The Smiths fell apart.

I always try to give Morrissey albums a chance and I always regret it.

This is the fourth Morrissey album on the list and I think that fact seriously stretches the credibility of whoever makes the selections. Maybe they gave it extra credit for only being mostly dead.

I’ll repeat myself, and with how this list goes I’m sure I’ll do it again, but I’m just not a Morrissey fan. This one was a little more tolerable than the others, but the lyrics were still insufferable from time to time. If it were more like The Smiths I’d probably enjoy it more and give it a three, but this one is getting a two.

My expectations were pretty low coming into this album, so I liked the music more than I thought I would. The problem is that I just can't get past Morrissey himself. Not even looking him up outside of his music. He just sounds so pretentious in his lyrics.

The rockabilly and upbeat vibe helps to stand Morrissey when he usually decides to have instruments just to have something there. The lyrics are not something I really paid attention to and although that is usually a highlight for Morrissey, it was nice not to have to pay attention too much. There is an awful lot of Morrissey on this list. I occasionally try to come round to the way of thinking that he can write some good songs and his voice maybe isn’t the most annoying thing in pop… but then… there’s soon a reminder. This time it was the chorus of We Hate It When… “It’s really laughable: ha ha ha ha”. This guy is not the talented poet people keep telling me he is. The album title for example, is a delicious triple entente: tribalism, weapons and arse. I just… don’t think that’s all that clever? Probably a 3 star album but rating it 2 coz this guy is so over represented on this list.

I know I've heard the first song on here before, but the rest was unknown and will probably stay that way. Some good lines, I liked "We hate it when our friends become successful" that felt very modern day. Otherwise it was a forgettable album.

There's that clip of Morrissey and George Michael talking about Joy Division where Morrissey goes on about Joy Division's pretentious use of fascist imagery and how their conception of the world was completely false. I was a big Smiths fan from the getgo, but even they started to sound a bit samey by the time they folded. And I think I had the same problem with Morrissey’s solo output. This was the third solo album & by the end of it, I have to say the same thing was happening. True, Mick Ronson’s more muscular production gave it slightly more oomph. The rockabilly feel of Certain People I Know was a welcome change mid-disc, but really, I was bored with his voice long before the end of this.

The most rock of Morrissey's output. Glam and rockabilly echoes, with great band and production by Mick Ronson. But the songs are still Morrisey songs: three note, whinge-fests. I also find his current public persona so xenophobic and unpleasant that I really can't give him any time. Will not listen again.

Not bad, but wouldn't give it more than one listen.

Sigh. Well. The cover would fit nicely in my club of 1star losers and the rockabilly songs might even put it there but I just don't care either way.

Listen, I know the guy's a twat. But that aside, I did not enjoy this. Okay, but seriously, with that actually aside, I found the Smiths in my formative years, and I do love their music very much. But I don't need Morrissey alone. The song I liked the most was the opener, and I figure there's enough great Arctic Monkeys songs I could listen to instead if I'm in the mood for that style. Still, it wasn't an assault on the ears so I won't go as low as 1 star.

This was better than I expected going into it. I’ve never cared for morrisey’s voice, it just irks me for some reason. So I didn’t love the singing on here but it was tolerable. And the songs were not bad. I really only liked We’ll Let You Know, that song was cool. Other than that I didn’t mind it but I would never return to this album.

Somehow he has become a bit cool nowadays - I think some people think they are buying a Robbie Williams album with the cover photos... (Have we actually seen Morrissey and Robbie in the same room???) But he really is just miserable, and not in a good way.

Morrissey is a very confusing man, whose political views are rather oddly disjointed. I only mention this because of the National Front Disco and the fiasco it caused which made me read more about his personal life. Whether it was ironic or not, I feel this album is weaker than his work with The Smiths. His voice is beautiful, but the writing feels less engaging, the subjects discussed aren’t as interestingly broody, and the tracks are a lot more dull.

As someone who likes The Smiths, this is insanely boring.

Repetitive crap

Hmmm, Morrissey without the Smiths. We ridiculed this album at the time and a repeat listen doesn’t make that a bad decision. Tried to be open minded and listen to / read the lyrics. A lot of the fascist accusations were unfounded for sure but it’s hard to be that discerning. It’s ambiguous at best. Like Simon without Garfunkel he seems to have lost his way.

Surprisingly boring. Started interestingly in being heavier than I expected and with the rockabilly twist. However that only held brief interest and it tailed off pretty dramatically thereafter. Next….

He's a witty lyricist but none of the songs grab me. Not entirely sure why he's held in such high esteem, probably because he's northern.

The more I listen to The Smiths, the more I come to realize that Johnny Marr was the genius and Morrissey was just the lead singer. 'Your Arsenal' is the first Morrissey solo effort I've listened to and it only cements that belief. It's an OK album but it's definitely not The Smiths. To its credit, Mick Ronson's production does help. As always with Morrissey, we need to try to separate the awful human being of the artists from the art. I'm willing to do that for The Smiths but it's quite a bit harder when so much of the lyrics sound so Brexity. Imagine thinking that the line 'We vote Conservative' is edgy. Also, 'You're the One for Me, Fatty'? Really Morrissey?

So, I like Morrissey’s vocal style, but he’s such a jackass. The best songs on this album happen to be the ones where the lyrics are especially eye rolly. I also missed the rest of The Smiths. The instrumentation was only so-so. 2.8.

The most interesting thing I found on this album are Morrissey 's abs. Beyond that, I didn't take away much of anything but annoyance from the album. While I was delighted when it ended, I can stretch my imagination into seeing how some people may enjoy it.

I actually like the first song which gave me high hopes, but it turns out that's just because it was Mick Ronson on the guitar (absolute legend) and the rest of the album was bog standard solo Morrissey. I was working away, kind of bored with the music, and then a catchy and interesting song came on, I got excited and thought 'oh hey finally the album is catching a groove!' but in reality the album had ended, and Spotify had shuffled to another artist. The most exciting part of this album for me really was when it was over.

Best Song: You're The One For Me, Fatty. The use of "fatty" here just really took me off guard. Worst Song: Certain People I Know. The whole song was outro. Overall: Starting to realize that all of Morrissey's music (solo and with The Smiths) sounds like the exact same flavour of melancholy. I thought it was kind of enchanting the first time I heard it, but now it's kind of lessened by my understanding that it's all he's able to do.

First part of this album was lame, soo soo lame, I knew he was a cunt but I didn't know he could make music so lame. The album does pick up toward the end, with some of that smiths magic recaptured in some nice ballads. But that doesn't make up for the truly awful openers. Two and a half. I was down on this one as well (didn't like the Smiths album) but I didn't rate it straight away and, you know what, it's grown on me a bit. I'd say I still find the majority of the songs whiny, even though I reckon I agree with most of what he's whining about. The music itself sounds less whiny than The Smiths. This album wasn't terrible. Just lots of the same...

I really enjoy The Smiths and Morrissey was a large part of that (his personality being what it is, but let me just judge his music fro now). But as a solo artist he just doesn't hold up. Making his music rockier doesn't help, since his voice really does work best in a single, specific musical context - apparently the one created by the rest of The Smiths.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this album. I don't dislike it, it's definitely listenable, but I don't think it's for me. It sounds very English, like it has that sound where you can tell he listened to David Bowie growing up and wanted to make a more modern sounding kinda thing. None of the songs are bad like I really wouldn't mind listening to them again they just kinda don't hit for me at all.

Never really been interested in Morrissey but lets see! Not convinced maybe on some - not on all.

Sometimes this project requires significant personal mastery to get through an albums. I was barely able to hang on through We'll Let You Know. I don't like the vibe, I don't enjoy how he puts phrases together or his point of view, and I hate his voice. I recognize that this album is not completely without merit; it's better than some of the Smiths the list has had me suffer through. But it sure isn't for me.

This record certainly has more enjoyable songs than Vauxhall, but it’s still just not for me. His voice is more bearable here though.

Hm, kind of The Smiths but shit and some more up-beat tracks at the start of the album. Also though I can't stop thinking about how he is a bit of a dickhead and a conspiracy spreader, antivaxxer kind of annoying bad person... Detracts from the listening experience which wasn't that great already.

Your Arsenal is the third album by English singer Morrissey. This glam rock and Britpop album received critical acclaim - including a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album - for Morrissey's move from indie pop to a more muscular rock sound. It was fun listening to this album while doing some work, but I wouldn't necessarily listen to it again.

Had some alright songs but I just couldn’t get into it. It took me a few days to muster the nerve to get through this 39 minute album and I kept thinking ‘why is this album on this list of just listens where artists like The Carolina Chocolate Drops are not’

I can see why people love Morrissey. I didn't recognize many of these songs, but it had that traditional Morrissey sound.

Music obscured by his abhorrent views and unpleasant personality. A lot of it I actively disliked, some of it seemed OK, but mostly it just passed me by.

Post new wave indie music. Very British oriented, some political lyrics concerning issues of the Era. I'm not sure if it's still relevant or not. It was ok, I don't see myself listening to it again.

When I started this, I was very much in the mind of "oh great, Morrisey". But the first song blew me away. Then it quickly degenerated into traditional moody whinging from the godfather of Emo.

Gotta say, I dont think I needed to listen to this before I never can again! I like the Smiths’ music, and I like a few Morrissey solo songs. This album is just fine, however. A couple of songs I really like, maybe less than half of them. The others have a mix of interesting lyrics that only Morrissey can write but are otherwise not very distinctive songs of his, in my opinion. I’ll totally give this another listen, but this doesn’t seem like it would make a GOAT list. The Wiki says this album was praised for its mix of rockabilly, glam, and rock, but I feel like that describes the Smiths already, so I’m unsure about what’s really new here. “I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday” is an undeniable beautiful tune, that is true! Beyond this, feeling uninspired!

I really liked the Smiths' album from a few weeks ago, but I do not like this album. I don't have too much to say about it, but absolutely none of the songs worked for me.

One extra star for Mick Ronson's production. But as ever, Moz is whining on in an arch "poor me" style, and flirting with racism.

I was pleasantly surprised with the hard rock start, although the riffs are a bit tired, not up to Johnny Marr's standards. The lyrics are classic Morrissey, that is to say, whiny and a bit obvious, but I guess that's what the fans who followed him after the Smiths split wanted. Some critics cite a TRex/glam rock influence, as well as a rockabilly influence but I really can't hear it. Finally, I have to say I'm surprised that Morrissey has 3 albums on 1001.

There are a few artists that I respect because they’re good songwriters and lyricists but I hate their voice or their singing so I just can’t listen to them. This list includes Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Thom Yorke, and Morrissey. This guy is so whiney, he moans and complains on practically every song. He would not be fun at a dinner party.

Immediately I groaned when I saw Morrissey lol oopsie I've never been a fan of The Smiths apart from like two songs, and I've never really listened to his solo stuff. But I tried to keep an open mind!! Pros: - I didn't immediately hate it as much as I thought I would - I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday is kind of pretty?? - it's not that long an album Cons - Morrissey has SUCH A BLOODY WHINEY VOICE - I tuned out after about 3 songs - Listening to Morrissey banging on about how "London is dead" and "we're the last British people" brings out a little eyeroll from me every time

I didn't realise the descent of Morrissey into Dad-rock and questionable (to put it mildly) views started as far back as 1992. I liked it more when I thought of Mozza as a hilariously self-absorbed but ultimately harmless character. 2.5/5

He does not deserve even the 0.000001 cents that I gave to him when I listened to this album on Deezer. However, despite all the "personality" thing, this is a very nice album with some reminiscence of "The smiths" that made a good rock album.

The most rock of Morrissey's output. Glam and rockabilly echoes, with great band and production by Mick Ronson. But the songs are still Morrisey songs: three note, whinge-fests. I also find his current public persona so xenophobic and unpleasant that I really can't give him any time. Will not listen again.

Okay, I'm not going to line the elderly moronic racist's pocket by listening to one of his consistently mediocre solo efforts. However, when I was younger, I tried all of Morrissey's solo efforts including this and really tried to make myself like them, such was my love for the Smiths. As ever, there are a couple of tracks that give you hope he hadn't lost it - the T-Rex pastiche Certain People I Know, and We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful, which sounds like a Spitting Image parody of the Smiths. But weighing that up against the odious National Front Disco (I think he's lost any right to protest that it's observational or ironic) and the bland plodding pub rock backing of, well, pretty much the rest of the album, and you have an absolute stinker of an album with a couple of promising singles on it. I realise Morrissey is a keen Googler of his own name, so I will say that he desperately needs the other Smiths around him to make the music, and to tell him that he isn't actually as smart or edgy as he thinks he is - especially the ones he sued. If only that double decker bus had crashed into him shortly after the Queen Is Dead. He'd be almost universally loved.

If you're a fan of misery pop and jingly jangly Smiths-style indie rock then go for it. Interesting to hear some of Morrissey's right-wing tendencies come tumbling out in the lyrics, very clumsily done.

Meh, the instrumentals don't feel too original and Morrissey is kind of annoying. Still, some interesting lyrics here and there.

Urgh! I had my first solo album from Morrissey yesterday and it became quickly apparent that the talent lay elsewhere and not with Morrissey himself. This is the second (of 4!) of his solo albums. They just aren’t good enough. I’ve started to wondered as well how much his music travels. I’m Scottish and can never remember hearing Morrissey until I moved to England and, granted, there is a live/hate thing about him here, but he doesn’t get a look in elsewhere. It’s like the musical equivalent of Monty Python.
