Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Good album and a nice listen, but it lacks the stardust of the smiths albums. 6/10

It’s not like I listen to Johnny Marr solo records, so I don’t think it’s that he’s great and Morrissey sucks. I think that those four together at that particular time captured lightning in a bottle and then never had it again separately or at other times in their lives. Cause the difference between how much I love The Smiths and how much I don’t love Morrissey’s solo albums is surprisingly vast.

Another standard Morrissey album

Nothing memorable here, basic rock record

Favorite Track: You're the One for Me, Fatty

Interesting

What is up with this list & Morrissey???? The album is good but damn lol

At least our third from Morrissey, more than that if you count the Smiths albums too. It's pretty good, some solid tracks on here for sure. Don't need all of these on here (maybe one solo project would be enough), but this one is on the better side. Favorite tracks: The National Front Disco, Certain People I Know, We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful. Album art: Another sweaty chest album cover (coming right after LL Cool J). It's a fine picture, nothing special. I like the title "Your Arsenal," seems like an arse pun. 3.5/5

Morrissey is cool. Maybe not as cool as people think he is, but still cool. I dig this. He's a cross between the Doors and Bowie.

some catchy melodies

Not bad. Prefer The Smiths though

The thing is that all of his albums here are fine, but there are way too many.

Ok but not great. Start was good. Prob 3 star I guess

Was genuinely so surprised when this started playing and I thought \"oh... I kinda like this???\". I do like the first couple tracks, and a couple more throughout the album. Most of the rest is just kinda... eh to me. I still like this better than any of The Smiths albums I have heard so far. Could have done without some of the more xenophobic sounding lyrics. Still though, nice to know that maybe there is a chance I won't hate every album that features him considering I have 3 more solo albums and one more Smiths. I don't suspect I will love any of them, but I maybe won't completely cringe when I see they are my album for the day.

Favorite Tracks: You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful You’re the One for Me, Fatty

Mostly Morrissey is trying too hard at the wrong things on this album. There is no need to put effort into being expressly British; we can already tell. And the attempts to write a proper rock’n’roll song are misguided. The best tracks on the album are the nice alternative tunes with poetic lyrics about love - some even have an ‘80s or ‘70s sound if he was after tradition.

Morrissey er mjög fínn til að hlusta á en ég fæ samt sem áður leið á að hlusta á hann og lögin verða auðgleymanleg þannig að ég held ég muni ekki setja svona plötu á aftur þótt ég myndi ekki mótmæla því að einhver annar setji hana á.

Morrissey being a prick (the 40-minutes version) The Smiths are better, but there were some decent songs

Not nearly as bad as I expecting, but does highlight how much Johnny Marr brought to the smiths. 3*

1. Is it enjoyable,l (not for me) and/or 2. is it any good? (It's superb) And 3. would I listen to it again? (Definitely not) The God of Despond, the Patron Saint of teen angst, the mournful beautiful voice of pain, longing - like a jaunty polite ride through an alley filled with broken hearts, doubts and goth corpses... Reluctantly I have a go.... The opening track is one of the most uplifting and rocky Morrissey song I've heard. The next song has energy too- not what I associate with him (emotional black hole). Then track 3 is actually sweet sounding. Sounds like rejection and praise mixed together - young love adolescence and the ups and downs. His music always seem to go to that place:adolescent era pain. He is the star, the god of the genre in that sense. If it exists. He does eerily sweet soul crushing despondency so lyrically. I really don't like it, it makes me think of Goths with bandages arms While Morrissey is important to include as so many people latched onto this music, it's just too gloomy for me to endure. He is brilliant at what he does. I could have been a lot more succinct, but it's so hard to edit these by phone....

The instrumentals were exceptional and exciting, but Morrissey just seemed vocally bored the entire time. I get how some people might be drawn to this, but it’s not for me.

am i crazy or are some of these songs at the beginning anti-immigrant ?? overall, pretty decent. never been a huge fan of morrissey’s bland vocals, but the music itself is very good

not too bad considering it's morissey - 3 stars

Private session on Spotify. Spotify has been trying to turn me into a Morrissey fan for years, not interested. After listening to this album, still not interested.

This is certainly the fourth Morrissey solo record I've heard before I die.

I felt like I was Seasick, Yet Still Docked listening to this one.

++: I Know How It's Gonna Happen Someday +: You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side, We'll Let You Know, The National Front Disco, Certain People I Know, We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful, Seasick, Yet Still Docked, Tomorrow +-: Glamorous Glue, You're the One for Me,Fatty 7,0/10

Ok Some great tracks. Nearly a 4.

I absolutely hate Morrissey as a person. But I like this album a bit more. (He's lucky he has a good band backing him) The first track was a good opening and "Seasick, Yet Still Docked" is underrated. Morrissey's vocal range is famously narrow as shown here. The guitar work and composition by Alan Whyte saves this album. I have to give 3 stars to "Your Arsenal" on a musical level.

Love her

It’s just meh. All sounds the same. May have been relevant to someone in 1992, but it wasn’t to me. Drones on and on and open and… Tomorrow was the standout track for me. Rocks. I think it’s his voice I quickly tire of. Pretentious.

Bland. Unmemorable.

Very original. Kinda sensual. Morissey has created his own style and its enjoyable piece of music. 3.5/5.

Morrissey, igen!

3.5/5. Anyone who takes his solo work over the Smiths either doesn't exist or is beyond delusional. It's not terrible music but it's missing that indie pop flavour that only Johnny Marr can produce. Some of the lyrics are a bit sussy with far-right undertones? Maybe he's being ironic or maybe he was always a right wing, racist nut.

It's okay, I want to hate on Morrissey but I'd probably listen to this again.

COYG! 5/10

I’ve grown up intended to hate Morrissey because of his dragging monotone vocals, but it just fits the music so well. I dont hate on this because nobody else’s voice could work so well with the lyrics and he just does it so well.

Abzug für Morrisseyigkeit

Not his best work Chris

Did in fact listen. Good chill stuff Favorite song: you’re the one for me, fatty Rating: 2.7/5

Happy Brit-Pop.

Your Arsenal is the third studio album by Morrissey, originally released in 1992. I am not a Morrissey fan. Sure he's a huge wanker, but his voice is what gets me sometimes. I enjoy a lot of his work with The Smiths, but his voice was coupled with catchy guitar riffs and good songwriting then. Seeing this solo album pop up as my album today got me a bit worried. I was pleasantly surprised. This album was really inoffensive. You can tell he was trying to lean into the Britpop movement that was happening. The lyrics can get a bit wanker-y but overall not as bad as I thought.

Good to hear again

You’re really going to make me listen to this middling Morrissey album?

oh no. It’s morrissey, so of course it’s a mix of being fucking dumb but also being great. Oh moz, take this 3

Started strong. Had a lot of potential. Ended weak.

I really like the Smiths and I know and like a lot of solo Morrissey work. This one was new for me today and I was just not in the mood for this asshole today.

Hmmm…. Really not sure what to say about this one….

This was probably the best of all of the Morrissey / Smiths albums we've had so far. But... why so many? I mean, 3 Smiths albums and three solo Morrissey albums? That's a lot, isn't it? It opened pretty well, some more of a rocking feel and not as much whining as I was expecting. But somewhere halfway through I had an uncontrollable urge to just punch Morrissey in the face. Most likely because of titles like "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" (If that's how you feel about your friends, you have serious issues) or "You're The One For Me, Fatty" (I mean... f**k you, man.) So the lyrics just got more whiny and mopey, but the music itself was pretty decent. Just... f**ing Morrissey, man. Top tracks: "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side," "I KNow It's Gonna Happen Someday"

This was decent and consistent all the way through. I like his work with the Smiths better. I know some of his other solo stuff, just has never been in a solid rotation for me.

A clear shift in style from previous indie pop to a more hard rocking vibe with not near as much of his moany whiney feels. Still, I peeled away from Morrissey after his solo debut Viva Hate, and am still a bigger fan of The Smiths, but overall this was a decent album.

I haven’t listened to much Morrissey, which is a shame because this is a solid lil record. Felt like several styles from the 80s and 90s blending together which was nice. I shall check out some more…which is ironic because I think one of his other albums is next in the rotation. Here we go…

I’m not the biggest Morrissey fan and this album was alright. Totally fine. Not great but still enjoyable. 3.5/5

Not my favorite Morrissey, but his music during this time has a pretty high floor. 3/5

As a big fan of The Smiths I expected to enjoy this but it is largely underwhelming with Glamorous Glue being the highlight.

I can’t claim to necessarily be a fan of The Smiths. I’ve enjoyed a few of their songs here and there, but I don’t know, I’ve never had the desire to really dive into their full albums. And I think a lot of this stems from my general distaste for Morrissey. There is just something about him that makes him seem unbearable. A man who thinks so fully of himself, and is a piece of shit xenophobe don’t make for a great frontman. I think he has a nice singing voice, but the appeal of The Smiths to me was always the other band members, and never Morrissey. So I was interested to see how he performed without those people working with him. I never realized just how many solo albums he had released, especially throughout the 90s. But his catalog is pretty extensive. And what I can say about Your Arsenal is that it left me feeling overwhelmed. This album is all over the place, and is kind of a mess. Some songs are nice. Seasick, Yet Still Docked is actually an amazing track. A strangely psychedelic inspired folk ballad. But when the song immediately before it is You’re the One for Me, Fatty, it leaves me feeling a bit scrambled. It just tries a number of different ideas, some of which don’t feel very well executed. Mick Ronson is on production here. And while I’m more familiar with his instrumental work with Bowie than his work as a producer, I can admit that he definitely gives this album its character. It still feels infused with a bit of late 80s flair. And it’s apparent how much the glam rock Bowie sound really was Ronson’s thing. Because it transferred over to this. On some songs, it sounds great, with powerful and driving lead guitar parts. But on something like Certain People I Know, it just makes me question what they were thinking in the studio at the time. Ronson’s production both adds to the mess, and also cleans the mess up. I don’t hate this album. Doesn’t change the fact that I still find Morrissey annoying, but I understand the appeal for many. He’s still a douchebag though. Rating: 6/10

I was expecting some dour, depressing music here, and it starts out with a surf rock song. Yeah, this album is more upbeat rock than I thought it would be. It does settle down into slower stuff and even a country sounding song. I got a bit tired of hearing his voice by the end, but all in all it was OK.

A decent album, although I do find Morrissey's languid vocals start to grate on my nerves after a while.

Memory lane. Not bad

first half of the album was great but i wasn't keen on the second half.

This is my third Morrissey album (compared to a solo Smiths record so far). Hopefully that lead will be reversed by the time this ends otherwise I'm going to question the relevance of this list. Like the other ones so far, incredibly mediocre. Certainly not a game changer, even for it's time.

Pas sûre???

Not bad, but it also doesn't stand out. It's quite good actually, but it all blends together.

I've never listened to a Morrissey album before. This rocks a little harder than I was expecting. This is good. Not quite great.

Melancholy with an upbeat pop sound. Morrissey is unique in his own right without question. His songwriting is captivating while also somber. Content can get repetitious after some time, but his voice is unique enough, along with the melodies of the music, to keep my attention. Love The Smiths, and Morrissey solo efforts are exactly what I would expect from the former frontman.

Begrudgingly liked this. Some cracking tunes but I still find Morrissey’s voice and delivery grating. Ironically the best song on the album was antifacist.

Was pleasantly surprised as this album kicked off. It retained a good sound but, at least first time through, didn’t give me much reason to return. Better than expected overall but can’t get it past three stars.

Rock, with some rockabilly influence

Eh I didn't like this as much as the others and his pretentious arrogance showed

Nothing particularly special.

Decent album. Previous Morrissey notes apply. Not my favorite of his, but I’ll give others more spins.

Enjoyable sound, don't know much about the dude. 3* Highlights: the national front disco

I've had 3 Morrissey albums so far at just over 100 on the list. So far none have really been all that interesting. It feels like his songs are largely making references to something I'm not familiar with or relate to. Context is missing for me. Like hearing a song about a movie I've never watched. I often just kind of zone out when this is on and next thing I know a couple racks have gone by. Meh. Favorite track "every day feels like Sunday" 3/5

This is perfectly fine. But there’s nothing new. Just meh. It’s a lot of the same-old.

Ok, fair is fair. The rockabilly influence was interesting

Look, I can understand a couple of Smiths’ records, even his first solo album. But that’s it. None of his other records deserve a spot on this list. And I was a fan. This is perfectly fine. But there’s nothing new. Just meh. It’s a lot of the same-old.

It's fairly good. I think the harder rock elements don't suit his voice/style as well, but there are some good songs here. I'm not a huge fan of Morrissey, but it feels like somewhat logical step for him. 3.6

Meh. 2.5.

Beautiful! Morrisey does not miss. I love youre the one for me fatty, special place in my heart <3

I've got to admit, I thought that the hard rock-ish ones are decent. Probably because it takes the spotlight away from his whiny voice and to the basic yet nice instrumentals. That's one of the things I like about The Smiths but unfortunately this is just Morrissey.

not enough sad crying too much foreshadowing of current morrissey’s politics

Good Morrissey album but the same vocal tone and style in each of his songs get draining.

It’s ok. Morrissey outside of the smiths never does much for me.

I wish people praised my mediocrity as much as they praise Morrissey’s.

I think this is definitely my favorite morrissey solo album but I still want to protest that there have been way too many of his on here. I totally understand a bunch of smiths albums but why should I give so much of a shit about these solo ones. There's some good stuff on each of them but nothing that warranted like 4 of his albums. I liked the first couple tracks and the last track on this one.

Not as good as the Smiths.

I mean, it’s fine, even good sometimes. But I don’t understand all the hype and why people get all worked up about him.

"Give us dad rock, but make it haunted" thats what I got out of this. If they had a rockabilly version of The Haunted Mansion this would definitely be the music.

This is music Grandpa Munster would love

Il fait partie du décor maintenant

Liked his humor. Songs weren’t bad. I thought the voice needed to be just a little louder in the mix. Too often it felt a tad lost; I had to work too hard to understand the lyrics , and it was simply a volume issue. I’ve never listened to Morrissey before. Overall, not too bad.

HOLY SHIT HOW MUCH MORRISSEY IS ON THIS LIST FUCK ME. 69 ALBUMS IN AND 3 (FUCKING 3) MORRISSEY ALBUMS. And it's fine, it's a decent album. Fav songs: - You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side - Glamorous Glue

okay i like the first song

Okay did not realize he held very racist views. Ignoring that, this is another middle of the road album. Sounds like many other British rock bands.

Decent. Probably what I'll end up saying about all of his solo albums. 🤷

Ekki uppáhaldsplatan með kallinum. Góð samt.

I almost fell asleep.

Not a bad album. Just ok.

Morrissey is great but this wasn’t his best

I comfortably sat through this one and enjoyed it for the most part but occasionally the lyrics gave me pause. If I were to listen more carefully engaged in the lyrics I have the feeling that I may not have liked it as much.

3,5. djöfull er erfitt að hafa gaman af morrissey

I'm a huge fan of The Smiths, and I like all of Morrissey's solo albums since "You are the Quarry," but I have never really loved his solo work from the late 80's and 90's. The rockabilly and heavier guitar work in most of these songs just overpower his vocals, in my opinion, and don't gel the way the work from Marr or his solo work does. There are some good songs on this album, though. "Tomorrow" may be my favorite, but there are others that are great, as well. I just will go to many other Morrissey albums before ever going back to this one.

Nemozem si pomoct, ale komu napadlo spravit taketo aranzmany? smh

Soms wat rockend, soms meer richting singer-songwriter. Allemaal licht theatraal. Zoals I Know Its Gonna Happen Someday het best laat horen.

Maybe it's my ignorance, but this was a lot poppier than I expected it to be. I don't think I'd put it on again but had no issue with it. The song about hating when your friends are successful was pretty funny to me although I'm not sure if that was his intention.

I really like The Smiths, but this doesn’t hit the same. Ok, We’ll Let You Know is pretty good musically. Not sure about the lyrics though. Also National Front Disco, catchy enough song. Certain People is a weird mix of music and vocals. We Hate It… is pretty catchy again. Probably a 3 overall.

I enjoyed listening to this album. The band was really good, and I thought the singing was good too. I do not usually listen to this type of genre but I felt this was fairly easy to get into in terms of being an outsider to this kind of music.

Morrissey and the Smiths were never my favorite. Generally too self-loathing for my tastes. But if that's what your into...

Not my cup of tea, but not bad. I'm just not a big fan of Morrissey. His vocals are a bit affected and so an acquired taste.

I liked this more than I thought I would. I didn't think I was a huge fan of Morrisey's solo work, but I'm either not as familiar with it as I thought or I just haven't heard this whole album before, because it was pretty good.

A lot better than Vauxhall and I, glam is a solid sound for Morrissey. I can still go the rest of my life without his music, but if we needed to keep one of his solo albums, this should be it. C-

listened 2x. 3.3/5

A lot less insufferable than I was expecting; had some nice instrumental

Best Songs: We'll Let You Know, I Know it's Gonna Happen Someday Listen Again: Probably not

I always surprise myself by enjoying Morrissey’s solo material more than I feel I ought to for him being such stubborn, egotistical and strange contradictory man. This is has strong guitar and bass playing often much heavier than previously and whilst never as charming or innovative as with Johnny Marr, this collection does rock well. I note the collaborations with Mick Ronson and that talented fellow from Fairground Attraction. Pretty good actually! 3.5

I actually like this quite a bit, but probably not enough to seek it out again. Sort of a perfect 3 album.

Well I think most of the songs are not available in my country, butt I will still listen to the songs anyhow. First song is available, starting off quite metally. I like his voice already, he's in Smiths soo. The guitar play is so good, it's dramatically unique. I always liked these kind of songs and they're just addictive. Same with the 2nd song, it's just too good to be bored of or smth. This song is also available. This one doesn't have anything particularly unique, but it sounds rich so it's enough. There was a shift in the song I even thought different song started. Loved that, there is a fake ending part too, it continuef with the same vibe after it with some of his talking. Ppl dislike him, but his music is quite good. And here goes the live versions of the song as original isn't available. 3rd song is less metal, more depressing with a guitar in both ears with different sounds. I slept and woke up on the last 10th song so I'm gonna listen to it again from the 4th song. Also 10th song is quite same and it's not live version not available in the original album. 4th song is live, quite slow one with hard rock vibes in a way. Whole song sounded like an intro to metal and it was after some minutes it was actually hard metal, liked that. 5th song again live, liking the vibes. The guitar solo, his live voice, and generally song sounds good enough for me. 6th song and its name is low key weirdly accurate idk. It's upbeat and giving highschool musical with that laugh-singing. Still good tho, more than good. 7th song, it was better vibe at the start I think. Not an amusing song sadly, I expect more from him. Though the lyrics is kinda funny. 8th song is glam rock vibe, I like it. The slowness is not my type sometimes but this really devoured it was simple but very nice to hear, loved it. 9th song is live and it starts with applause. This one's also slow, but decent. It's not as good as the last one I believe. Quite short, and fun. 10th and last song, is a little more upbeat, nothing dramatically different from the other upbeat songs. Not bad at all, enjoyable. Same goes with the whole album, it started of great and most of the songs were bops, others were not as important or interesting to listen to like pixes were for example, that's why 3 stars is what seems to be the right choice.

Great album - Morrissey, however, is quite right wing ...

I grew up listening to The Smiths but I don't think I've ever listened to Morrissey's solo stuff. It almost feels wrong hearing his voice singing more upbeat music but it definitely works. Glamorous Glue is such a banger. I love the guitar work in it. I'm really loving the psychedelic elements he's got going on with the guitar on this record. It makes things a lot more interesting. Certain People I Know caught me off guard haha. It has like a more country sounding riff.

I love The Smiths but never really listened to Morrissey solo. It's fine.

Not his best, is it? No, 'cos that's Vauxhall & I.

Eh not my fave

ai q odio desse porrinha que faz musica boa . apenas 3 estrelas pq eh o morrisey e dar mais q isso é quase uma ameaça p humanidade

F morrissey

From everything I've heard, Morrissey is a totally pretentious prick. But his music's alright. Nothing amazing that warrants the slavish devotion I see from some fans, like my former co-worker that had him tattooed on his arm. But whatever.

Bien, sin más. Más rock para la lista.

Glamorous Glue We'll Let You Know We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful

Enjoyed it more than i expected. Solid Record. It was not to long and turned out to be a good enjoyable listen. Not the biggest Morrissey and The Smiths Fan. Would give it a 3.5 Score

A very Morrissey album. The definition of early '90s British pop.

We’ve gotten two Morrissey albums and zero Smiths albums thus far. Not a 1,001 album I needed to hear but fine nonetheless

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would

Surprisingly fun listen, with plenty to pick apart in the music and lyrics. Morrissey confounds me. Sometimes I think he's a genius and others he seems aimless.

Morrissey is a name I see flying by occasionally but I was not familiar with the work of the smiths, nor Morrissey except for hang the dj (thanks black mirror) the guy's voice is really distinct and I recognized it immediately. I was pleasantly surprised but not blown away. The first few opening tracks were really pleasant but it all sounded the same after a while. A solid 3.

Morrissey is such a strange character. His older tracks were certainly left-wing, but now he's seemingly the exact opposite nowadays? As a wild wordsmith of the 80s, these songs feel tripe and like some kind of weird roleplay for him. I'm not really sure how to feel. One thing is for sure, however. If you don't know what the song is called, 9/10 it is just the first line of the tune. Hilarious meme.

I enjoyed this, like hearing an extended version of a later Smiths album.

Not super familiar with Morrissy, I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It's not something that I will add to my rotation, but it was good and enjoyed by me.

I'll begrudgingly admit, this wasn't terrible

Morrissey reminds me of growing up so will always be fond of a few songs on here (the national front disco, you're the one for me fatty, seasick yet still docked, tomorrow...) but if we're talking 1001 best albums of all time, his work on any/all of The Smiths albums are more deserving of a place here in my humble opinion!

Oh-oh-oh-ohhhh! Ohhh! Oh!

Expected another whine fest, but was pleasantly surprised by the strength of the guitar lines at the start of this one. Morrissey’s vocals are still the weakest part of his own album, and the energy does drop off in the back half, but to not hate on one of this guy’s LPs is already punching well above expectations

This one was a little boring. Definitely Morrissey's weakest offering

Trying to be good

Will need to revisit

Morrissey Way better than the Smiths album we listened to. Songs and and performances are way better. I like the songs with the acoustic. “I know it’s gonna happen someday” And “We’ll let you Know”

Fun to listen to and actuallly some really great moments instrumentally. His voice still kinda irritates me too much for me to fully enjoy the album but I think with a different singer would be a 4

Blind album, know the artist from another album here. Dont think im a fan of his work but that's okay.

Standard Moz solo fare (not as good as the Smiths, handful of great songs)

Its not the Smiths though. Can start to see the cracks, this is the beginning of Mozza on his journey from irony to bigotry he resides in a plane of his own making.

It's got done good singles on there, and had a certain eccentric style, but I just didn't gel with it.

Oh FFS! After yesterday's Coldplay, I wasn't ready for another knobber. Okay, putting reservations aside (again), giving it a solid listen. It turned out to be alright - maybe a few jarring rockabilly moments - but overall, it's a good, consistent, well produced album.

The first half of this album was underwhelming, but the back half really carried it for me. I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday and Seasick, yet Still Docked were my favorites. Also appreciated the colonial flute placed in the background of a couple of the songs, very British of him. Solid 3.5/5

Meh. I listened at the gym which def wasn’t the right vibe so maybe that contributed to my indifference. Didn’t not like, didn’t love. Kinda background music to me.

Despite Morrissey being a full blown racist he is somewhat of a musical icon. I like the general sound of the album, honestly sounding a bit surfy to me, but my opinion of him as a person tainted this experience a bit. Not one I think ill come back to.

It was quite okay

Does it seem like we're over-indexing on Morrissey? It's cool but why so much?

I’m a big fan of The Smiths, but I had never heard any of Morrissey’s solo work. I’m not sure if this was the right place to start. I listened to this album twice through and nothing stuck. The verdict’s still out on Morrissey, but this album isn’t anything spectacular.

Morrisey being Morrisey.

Late 80s skins I generally dislike. This was better then that, more introspective and relatable

Generic went solo and did a cool thing but i dont remember any of the songs. Sorry. 3

“So what shall we call the album?” “Well, he’s usually introduced on stage as ‘Here he is. He’s an arse! He’s your arse! He’s Morrissey!’” “We can work with that.”

He’s still got it 🤟

Better than I had expected, having assumed that most of the talent in the Smiths was Marr and the others.

Not usually what I go for but here we are! It wasn't bad

I enjoyed this one - guy is still a dick.

Morrissey is a knob but I didn’t dislike the album, I think the production was better than the Smiths albums. Some decent songs on here

"You're Going To Need Somebody On Your Side" and "Glamorous Glue" were real surprises. I really enjoyed those songs a lot. "Tomorrow" was the closest that he came to capturing the Smiths magic. The rest of the album was very unexciting.

I liked this much more than I thought I would. It’s more rock than usual for Morrissey.

Not the worst Morrissey album, like the riff on the first track.

Faintly satisfying but mildly irritating, like peeling dead skin from a toe. One listen down and no noticeable highlights but that could change further down the line. He's the ur-arsehole of people like Pete Doherty and Russell Brand who I love and hate in equal measure. I find conflict and moral quandary really uncomfortable so perhaps I should excise these people from my life and have done with it.

Crooney but ok to listen too

Average, not his best

I'm thoroughly annoyed by the cover art and title so we'll see how this goes. Of course it rocks. Artful and surprisingly subdued, I particularly appreciated the titles and overall flow. I'm getting big David Bowie vibes. 3.5/5 stars because patriarchy.

ok naman!! parang, boringly british. arctic monkeys-esque

5.5/10. i don’t care about the british being concerned about themselves. i love the top track, it’s surfy sound and acknowledgement of near begrudging relationship between speaker and listener. i need you and you need me and we’re all the other has so let’s get going. we’ll let you know feels like a better glam glue, especially with the sonic dissonance and distortion, a feeling of only wanting to share pain with the dedicated who care about them as people, and acknowledging the pain they may inflict as a consequence of the repetition in their lives creating tension we hate it when is crabs in a bucket you’re the one for me is actively knocking the album down many pegs. these guys just can’t help themselves. the final three home stretch is a powerhouse

He said what about my weight?

This is the second morrissey album I have gotten and by far this one was much better than the first. Although not something I would listen to regularly, I actually had moments of enjoyment while listening to this one. Overall not bad but exceptionally great.

This wasn't terrible, but it must be said that any enjoyment I got from this album was down to the backing band and not Morrissey himself. Best track: We'll Let You Know

from Morrissey’s fourth studio album we once again learn he: 1) feels sorry for himself 2) hates anyone who isn’t british 3) loves fat chicks unfortunately, for as iconic as Morrissey is, really only in context of The Smiths does his voice ring with an indisputable magic. post The Smiths however, without the cosmic chemistry of Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, and Mike Joyce, everything Morrissey does is just derivative and makes one long for a bygone era. there’s some memorable moments, sure, but gosh can you just imagine how much better this would be if he wasn’t such an insufferable prick and didn’t destroy one of the greatest bands of all time? anyway it’s a decent album.

Didn't feel all that different from a Smiths album. I like The Smiths but this was slightly underwhelming. It was pretty good overall but nothing stood out, besides the usual cheeky lyrics.

This is my second album by Morrissey (third of you count The Smiths) on this generator. The first record was Viva Hate, which was gloomy and depressing. This album was similar, but not as heavy on the doom and gloom. This record was more indie rock focused, whereas the first album was more like goth rock. Morrissey still hasn't cheered up on this record (came out 4 years after Viva Hate (my first reviewed album)). Apparently he is a bit of a tool, which comes across in his lyrics, which sound preachy and pretentious by times. Overall, not a bad record, but I found myself constantly zoning him out. His voice is just too moany for my tastes. Plus, it's a beautiful day outside, I don't feel like moping about listening to fucking Morrissey all day. Cheer up dude, have a burger ffs. Favourite songs: Glamorous Glue, The National Front Disco, You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side Least favourite songs: We'll Let You Know, I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday 3/5

Morrissey never reached the peaks of the Smiths. Musically proficient with quirky lyrics but it’s hard to separate the art from the artists frankly abhorrent views.

Good! This one rocks more than I expected. Standouts: Glamorous Glue, Tomorrow Others: You’re Gonna Need Someone on You Side, We’ll Let You Know, Certain People I Know, We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful, You’re the One For Me, Fatty. Seasick, Yet Still Docked, I Know It’s Going to Happen Someday 3/5

Very upbeat for sad bit music

Very generic "I used to be in a great band" kind of music.

Instrumentals were good but I didn't like the vocals. The didn't add much and were often more distracting that impactful to the songs. Still wasn't a bad album but nothing outstanding here in my opinion.

A pretty solid, consistent set of Morrissey songs. None of them really sound like classics though, and (maybe as a result), neither does the album.

It was decent, Glamorous Glue and Certain People I Know were the only two standouts for me. I did enjoy it more than I anticipated considering my apathy for Morrissey. 3 stars

Bouncing cutting edge for it's time.

"Your Arsenal" is more than a decent record, but Morrissey did much better during his legendary career, especially in the years with The Smiths. His music is still good here, but just not too memorable.

HL: “We’ll Let You Know”, “Seasick”, “You’re Gonna Need…”, “Tomorrow” First couple songs sound like they’re from a different album entirely Though I liked most of the various musical directions taken (including musique concrete in “I Know it’s Going to Happen Someday” & “We’ll Let You Know”), it’s not really essential listening. And then there’s “England for the English”, but it’s ironic! shut the fuck up

Alright I suppose

I still can't really get into Morrissey solo work as much as the Smiths, it's just ok. He needs Johnny Marr.

Never got into the Smiths when I was growing up, and certainly never listened to Morrissey in any depth. In fact, I had him blocked on Spotify. The tunes have their moments, although the album doesn't start well. When it gets a bit more jangly towards the end it's better probably, although he can be a little turgid at times and comes across as a right twat. Not terrible, but it didn't change my view of Morrissey, which is a shame. Perhaps when I get to some Smiths it'll be Johnny Marr who grabs me and makes me listen.

I do like a bit of Morrissey, I just try to ignore the questionable politics.

It’s Morrissey alright

More like "Your Arsehole" Has anyone done this yet? I always like his music more than I think I will, but he's just such an enormous knobhead. Even if I didn't know he was a knobhead, he eminates knobhead energy so strongly in his lyrics and vocals.

A surprise to be sure, but a pleasant one. Wasn’t expecting much from a Morrissey solo album but it wasn’t bad at all.

Great artist, meh album

Well, I've never heard about Morrissey before. It is my first album. I don't understand all the haters in the ratings before, it is not bad. I have a main problem with the mastering of the album, but these are enjoyable tunes.

Well his politics are starting to show and he was clearly always insufferable. Like Tomorrow's repeated plea "TELL ME THAT YOU LOVE ME." Nah, bro, it's cool you love yourself more than enough for the rest of the world. here's the thing though, it is a great voice that finds odd ways around the instrumentation behind him and Ronson and the Smith's like band produce a very appealing Glam sound. The problem is Morrissey. I could listen to this all day long if it all didn't start to become distasteful around the end of "We'll Let You Know" peaking at a feverish rate with "We Hate It..." Such talent wasted. ugh. At least other seemingly insufferable front men like Sting and Bono aren't showcasing the worst of humanity. And while Father John Misty may (I italicize because I am incredulous) be doing it all as a show, it is clear now that there was no facade or affectation here, Morrissey was telling us all about himself. He's clever. He's talented. He's also the worst of us.

Good tunes throughout

I wasn't massively into this tbh, as James says it is just like the weaker stuff of the Smiths.

Hmmm, it was okay I guess, sounds like B sides of the Smiths, stuff that just wasn't good enough to go on an album but instead it's just Morrissey.

I'm bummed. Not that this album doesn't have a few highlights that make it worthwhile to listen to (opener "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" and closer "Tomorrow" easily come to mind here). That being said, I just can't bring myself to forgive the Moz for pandering to the far-right parties of his country these days (all those UKIP and Brexiter morons of all stripes can eat shit, as far as I'm concerned...). Besides, one should never forget his unsavory public statements about immigrants "threatening" pure Englishness, or his incredibly dumb take about the slaughter of those Norwegian youngsters by a crazy far-right lunatic. And all those rancid "ideas" now polluting his mind (along with our eyes and ears) started here, with "The National Front Disco", the fourth track of this LP... Make no mistake, " The National Front Disco" is still a nice track, at least musically speaking. Yet it's quite a problematic one when it comes to its lyrics. And *now*, a few decades later, it's pretty clear that Morrissey's subsequent allegations that those admittedly ambiguous lyrics didn't mean he condoned fascist ideas were just a goddamn *act*. The man's downward spiral into despicable political stances started here, enough said. To be clear, my point is not to "cancel" the artist, whatever that word means. Nothing can erase the impact Morrissey has had on modern music, thanks to his tenure with the Smiths. But just like Kanye West, another "problematic" artist whose albums I really, really loved once, you can't take the stupid stuff that now comes out of his mouth lightly. So I would be lying if I said that listening to his solo albums doesn't make me feel queasy and ill-at-ease (that very same feeling I have with Kanye's records now). "Tomorrow, Will It really come? And if it does come? Will I still be human" Not in the full meaning of the word, Steven Patrick Morrisey, not in the full meaning of the word. But maybe becoming a sad caricature of who you once were is only "human" after all... Now add to this the fact that *Your Arsenal* is not a perfect record anyway, and here's how you can use his spot in this list for an artist that would deserve it much more than him. It's not easy to step in Johnny Marr's shoes anyway--not that the Moz's collaborators didn't try hard to do a good enough job on this one. Still giving an incredibly generous 3/5 grade to this album because of the music and songwriting, which is good overall, even if not always stellar. And as for half of those 3/5 albums, I won't include this LP in my own list of keepers. Let the hardcore fans talk about it on their own. As far as I'm concerned, I'm moving on. Number of albums left to review: 600 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 190 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 90 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 120 (including this one)

Wat op de achtergrond opgezet en collega's hebben er geen opmerkingen over gegeven...denk dus positief

It’s a decent entry into the Morrissey's solo endeavors. No truly standout tracks but the collection as a whole is very much worth a listen.

Surprenament pas si pire, mais beaucoup de pièces sonnaient trop pop typique de l'époque à mon goût. L'album démarre avec un banger mais c'est un peu up and down à partir de là. On dirait que la voix de Morrissey est moins pénible sur cet album, peut-être je devrais revisiter The Queen Is Dead.

Good, but all the songs sounded kind of the same.

I think it's just OK. The "heavier" sound suits his voice on some of the tracks, but on others it just doesn't seem to come together.

в целом хороший альбом я вообще не понял, к чему первые два трека, потому что с We'll Let You Know начинается совсем другая музыка, которая сильно интереснее это просто хороший крепкий альбом, отдельно отмечу We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful - крайне забавное содержание крепкие 3+

P.S. We are the last truly British people you will ever know - "чуваки из глобала" пишут, что это расизм. Посмеялся, но задумался.

Ну чё, три плотные такие, хотя в начале думал 2/3, но вторая часть норм, не на 4, но норм

I've not really heard much from The Smiths so I have no past affinity for his music, I thought this was alright. Unfortunately he's a massive cunt so he can get fucked. Highlights: You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday

I really like the smiths, so thought this would be up my street..... Nothing particularly grabbed me here. It doesn't have the humour (intentional or not) that the smiths has. Nor the angst and melancholy that I like. Also no Johnny Marr either! I don't dislike the sound, just not what I thought it would be. I'm fairly sure Morrissey has better albums than this, perhaps they'll turn up. He's also done and said a fair amount of dodgy stuff in recent years... Can usually take what he says with a pinch of salt as that's what he does, but not so much recently. But art from artist and all that

Punchy but not many hits.

Always liked the smiths but hated morrissey so was expecting to hate this frustratingly it’s pretty good, won’t make my regular rotation so 3 stars

Very basic album

I love the smiths and I like Morrissey but I think this effort is mediocre, relatively speaking. More of the same, but less memorable and a bit bland

Interesting but nothing special

It was all right. I got kind of bored by the end. Nothing special, but not bad either.

Miserable Morrissey sounds pretty good here. Pleasantly surprised by this.

All the songs sound the same, nothing too exciting

Just seeing his face makes me annoyed, but I do have to admit that some of the songs on his album were really good. Not a fan of the album cover or name, but the music itself is alright for the most part. Fave track(s): You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side, I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday

A few years into his solo career, we get to inspect the all-important question: was Steven Patrick Morrissey the heart and soul of The Smiths? No. Well, not really. Morrissey's lyrics and mood were still an integral part of The Smiths, along with his ability to write hooks, but the production is definitively not as good. While Smiths records were beautiful and intriguing, Your Arsenal stands as a generic rock record that happens to have Morrissey's vocals atop. Perhaps the most interesting part is the sampling on I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday, which feeds the song a rich ambience even before Morrissey opens his dumb mouth. Man I can't stand Morrissey. He's such a moron. He wrote some of the best songs of the 20th century and now he's an old jerk of a man. I hope he retires and communes with nature so that he leaves us all alone. Goodbye!

There's something I really like about this guy's music but I can't put my finger on it. Music and vocals sound simple but comes across as good music. I did like the Smiths album I got a little better than this solo album

Ehhhhh

Very Morrissey

Morrissey be like I’m a sad piece of shit

I’m so sick of the egregious over-representation of Morrissey on this list my immediate reaction was 2 stars, no matter what. But I have to come to terms with the fact that my issues with him are mostly not about music, at which he’s certainly competent. Alternately (and sometimes simultaneously) maudlin and self-important lyrics are the primary sins here as always.

not bad

I’m more of a Smiths fan than a Morrissey fan but this is still good. 3.5/5.

3 stars for childhood nostalgia.

The signs of Morrissey's curmudgeonly racism are beginning to show by this album. The good stuff is excellent, but I can hardly bear to listen to him now, knowing what he has become and almost certainly was all along.

Starts a bit meh but the last few tracks are solid

why is it whenever i think about a specific album or a specific artist and when i'm going to get them, they get generated for me the next day? in this case i was wondering about when i would get my first morrissey solo album its good, but i prefer his work with the smiths

Nothing special about it, but not too bad, another album that I would rate 2.5 if I could

Favourite song: You’re The One For Me, Fatty One for the karaoke: We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful One for the car: Glamorous Glue Big in Mexico

I thought this album was good. All songs are decent but it’s missing a good ol’ Cemetery Gates baby

Of all the Smiths/Morrisey albums (I think this is the 4th) that have been served me, this is the best so far, in my opinion, and really the only one I've enjoyed.

Aardig, zo hipster

not bad

Uncanny. I've just had a Smiths album and commented that I wouldn't judge them on Morresey being such a twat. Well here we are Marr-less. Interesting. Its an OK...solid...would i listen to it again , probably no.

If you've heard one Smiths song you've heard this entire album before. I'm not a huge Smiths fan and this guy really is one note in terms of music. Every song sounds the same and he can't seem to be diverse at all. But at least it's short and isn't offensive (unlike the man himself). Generic and bland. 2.5/5

In Ordnung. Nett zum ein mal anhören.

This a tough one. I still don't have an answer on where you separate art from the artist. Even before all the more recent stuff, I wasn't the biggest fan of Morrissey the person, but there are Smiths songs that I just love and when hearing them they take me back to a different time in my life. At the end of the day it really has nothing to do with him, and more for my own experience. I never really listened to much of his solo stuff, but this album was pretty good and I really liked a few of his songs. The "Fatty" song I get is tongue in cheek, but still just doesnt sit well. Songs to Add to Library: You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side Glamorous Glue

I actually liked the fatty song as a teen.

I've checked out on Morrissey a bit after the algorithmic glitch which has frontloaded him these past weeks. I feel like this list is overstating the cultural importance of a midly influential group. That said, I found this more melodic and listenable than the last one we had to listen to.

Morrissey... the insufferable white Kanye.

I don't like Morrissey's voice. So kudos to "Your Arsenal" for getting at least a few songs in before the vocals started to grate on me. Maybe it's not his voice itself, but how he uses it, often in a whine that exaggerates his accent (like when he pronounces last "laaahssst"). Some songs had pretty good guitar that I enjoyed until the vocals and lyrics got in the way. Don't remember which ones... it was a week ago. Maybe I should stop listening to 80% an album and then forgetting to finish and review it.

I’m gonna need to figure out the secret to Morrisey’s success on this album. He’s gonna have to give up the goods. Either that or maybe the record company is gonna have to tell me. I was gonna say Mick Ronson, the producer, was gonna have to let me know, but he died a year after this album and can’t. The real secret are songs with “Gonna” in the title as they are the strengths of this album (Your Gonna Need Someone On Your Side, I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday). Or better yet, Mark E. Levin is the success engine because he wrote the music for both those songs, the only two he wrote on the album. There are some other solid songs on this album too like Glamorous Glue and Certain People I Know. I would venture to say that there are not any truly bad songs on the album. Just not enough other solid ones to lift this album higher. Looking back at The Smiths reviews, I hated Morrisey’s voice while I enjoy it here. Im not sure what changed, but this is by far Morrisey’s best performance I’ve heard so far. I definitely like this album and would listen again. 3 & 1/3 star.

i can't tell if this is supposed to be kinda cheesy or not, but i can't help but smile when the guitars veer into batman theme territory. had a good time with this album

Good, not great.

So there is a period of time where Morrissey's popularity makes sense, and maybe 1992 was it. His vocals remain reminiscent of the 80s, singing from the top of the mouth rather than from the throat or gut, and musically the album is melodically pleasing. It would be objective to say that this album is good and worth listening to, except that the stench of Morrissey's musical messiah complex still manages to linger. If the listener can compartmentalize Morrissey from his own work on this album, one should have fun with it.

I quite like the album sonically but i can’t really try to ignore who the artist is. Especially not with the lyrics of some tracks like ”We’ll let you know” and ”The national front disco”(i know the latter one is supposedly satire but seeing morriseys own opinions on the topic kinda blurs the line) so i guess i’ll give it a 3/5 but its honestly closer to a 3.5

ehhhhhh, i dunno about this mr morrissey. also fuck morrissey.

Well, this is surprisingly up tempo and un-morose for Morrissey. I choose to give all the credit to Mick Ronson. But I don't hate this.

I don't really care about other people's politics, but when you have to shake your head because of lyrics like "At heart, what's left, we sadly know that we are the last truly British people you'll ever know" something is definitely wrong there. The music was very enjoyable!

I enjoyed it but not my favorite Morrissey album.

First two tracks are pretty heavy ("You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side" and "Glamorous Glue") but the rest is a bit more chill. Not quite as good as the other Morrissey album I had ("You Are The Quarry")

Decent sound but nothing banging

I'm writing this right after listening and I don't remember anything about this album. Maybe there was a song about a fatty? Idk. Not great, not terrible. 2.5 if I could.

Melted into the background a bit. Pretty subdued pop rock sound. Definitely some Bowie influences. Pleasant, but nothing special.

I know what Morrissey's vocal stylings sound like, but I can't think of any Morrissey tune that I know...certainly nothing on this album. I didn't think that I would like a full album of Morrissey, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Some rockin' and some droning, but in total, it was okay.

Listened Before: N I came in with preconceived notions about Morrisey and I have to say, I was a bit wrong. Pros: This was more of a rocker than I thought I would be getting from the former Smiths frontman. The first song, especially, was almost a grunge song. I can say I actually liked the rest of this well enough to listen a second time. His voice pretty great as well.. Cons: Morrisey comes off pretentious in everything I've ever listened to. This album is no different. However, I think maybe if I lighten up a bit, it comes off a bit more just sarcastic. The cover of this album is ridiculous, too. Apparently he thought he was pretty hot shit. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: "You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side", "Certain People I Know"

Interesting

I like some things from Morrissey. Your Arsenal arrives firmly at "Okay". I made it through the album, but I won't remember anything from this album to make me want to revisit.

Morrissey has a distinctive voice. I quite liked it at first but by the time the Smiths were done, his voice was starting to wear on me. Some of the louder songs such as Glamorous Glue and The National Front Disco are enjoyable partly since the heavier sound is different for him and done well but also since the louder music disguises his voice.

Morrissey was always “slash your wrists” kind of music, but sometimes with a political stance as well. As a result in my youth I hated it, drab, downbeat and melancholy. Today in reflection I may have been a little too harsh, however it’s still not music I enjoy nor would I search him out on Spotify. 3/5 on a good day

I'm never sure where to sit with his solo stuff. Christ morissey moans a lot, and there's some dodgy lyrics, but despite that there's a couple of really good songs and I liked this album. Fuck morissey tho!

I mean despite being a piece of shit the man makes good music 3

Instinctively I was repulsed when I saw that there was another album with this guy however I did enjoy this album as a whole more than "Queen is Dead" by the Smiths. Some lyrics are a bit dodgy. "Glamourous Glue" shows Tories have never changed. Finding out "You're the One for Me, Fatty" is supposedly about Chas Smash of Madness was surprising.

Está chido, pero refuerza mi no gusto.

Mjah, ik had hier toch iets meer van verwacht.

I like.

Just one of many solid Morrissey solo albums, solid as in very solid. Sure, if you select his best solo songs you get material for a couple of albums that nicely compare with any Smiths album, but it is not clear why this album is on the list.

I'm finding Morrissey's singing still quite annoying, but this album didn't sound all too bad.

This rocked more than I had anticipated. Still not the biggest Morrissey fan but liking him more each time I listen to him. 3 stars.

I wanted to hate it but it was disappointingly mediocre
