mopey art rock you might hear at Sports Basement. really hoping all those weird nationalism lyrics are ironic
First listening didn't impress me much, but after 3rd or 4th some of the songs appealed to me, especially Certain People I Know and We Hate When Our Friends Become Successful. Alright, it sounds as a really early indie. Satisfactory.
I'd never been part of the Morrissey bandwagon, but of course his music is inescapable and his voice so unique. A good, but forgetable album that you listen to without any stand out tracks. Pleasant.
Not bad, a few bangers, torch songs, overall pretty decent.
Was OK,
Harder edged than classic Smiths albums but Morrissey's distinct croon adds in unique color throughout.
I know of Morrissey but have never really heard his solo or other work. Reminds me a bit of the limited U2 I’ve heard. Alright but no real standouts.
Rock
Pretty decent album. Nice variety of sounds, and Morrissey is a decent singer as well. A bit felt too poppy for my taste, and therefore forgettable, but I wasn't offended by it. 3 stars.
Much different from The Smiths sound of Morrissey. We'll let you know has some very not PC overtones. I mean its a great Morrissey album, its just if you are on the fence about him like I am, then its hard to say if it shifts it for me out of 3 territory.
I'm listening to Morrissey and I'm not…sad??? Seriously though, Morrissey takes a lot of hits for being the original emo downer, but this is an upbeat rocker.
Lyrically it seems shock value is rated highly tunes wise it harks back all over the place.
This was a good album - slightly above average but not great. Top tracks: You’re gonna need someone on your side Certain people I know I know it’s gonna happen someday
Listenable. Did not care for the slow tracks.
Kind of bland. Every song sounds the same.
Conflicted about this one
Music was fine, just lesser Smith's really. Some problematic lyrics that remind you who you're listening to.
61. Bola para um lado, homem para o outro. A derrota é garantida. Saboreia o momento. Quatro passos e já está. Por agora, bola para um lado. Homem para o ou--- MotA: We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful "With the world's fate resting on your shoulder / You're gonna need someone on your side"
It’s Morrissey. It’s not The Smiths. It’s just fine.
funky fresh vibes but dude’s a tory so
Rock and roll. A little strange but not the worst.
I think this the first time I have willfully listened to Morrissey. It is an alright album.
Energetic album. Wouldn't mind hearing it again.
Haven't loved Morrisey in the past, but this album did work very well. A surprise!
Another one I really enjoyed, but then, I like Morrisey. Lots of people don’t so it isn’t going to be for everyone! Worth a listen though, even if you’re not a fan. Kind of album I’d recommend to someone to start with Morrisey!
Dodgy lyrics, and it's not The Smiths, but worth a listen
I especially enjoyed the first few songs that had more of a hard, raw guitar sound. I would definitely take a full album of that. The rest was a bit hit and miss but I still enjoyed it. A definite 3.5 but I'm not as eager to replay the whole thing like I typically would for a 4.
klassischer Morrissey Sound. grundsätzlich 1 Punkt Abzug weil er so ein Trottel ist.
I think maybe another Morrissey album could be very good but this one isn't stunning really
Had no idea this guy and his band of way far out of the closet cock lovers did anything that didn't make me instantly vomit up yesaterday's breakfast. The opener on this one's surprisingly decent rockin' with that heavy take on surf themes in the instrumentals. The shoegaze elements in #3 were a totally unexpected touch of psych cool. Sadly otherwise the track foreshadows the descent into crap that the album takes from there. #5's gay country rock marks a bit of a low point of almost no return. With the exception of #8 and #9's cute vibey instrumental work, the rest of it is - while still head and shoulders above most anything I've heard of his before - mostly varying degrees of insufferable. If anything, the saving grace here overall is the psychey studio mix touches and samples sprinkled throughout, well that and the uniqueness afforded by the overt campness of it all.
Identifiable sound from Morrisey, enjoyed listening
A primeira canção, you're gonna need someone on your side, é qualquer coisa. Gosto dos instrumentos carregados do álbum, sente-se um peso diferente, mas muitas das músicas passam ao lado, é um bom álbum que não me cativou tanto. Nota:6/10
Pretty good.
It was pretty good, but I wish that I could rate half stars because ideally I'd give it 2.5
Not actually that bad. Always thought of Morrissey as a moany bastard with shit music. Was surprised that his music isn’t that bad.
Didn't mind but find most Morrissey forgettable
Not a huge Morrissey fan, but its ok.
It's like... well, morrissey. ticks the boxes. another one i'd like to give 3.5
I had heard the name but never his music. This album was okay at best.
Decent
Het is muziek, niet vreselijke muziek, maar ook geen geweldige muziek
Some nice production touches here and there but nothing I'd come back to.
Did not dislike as much as I thought I would, mostly due to instrumentation. But, it's ok.
I prefer his stuff with the Smiths, but this is still a good listen. I'd give it a 3.5 if possible.
Love the record. Hate the human. 5 for the music and 1 for the person. So it gets a 5 with an asterik.
Pretty sure this was the last Morrissey album I ever listened to, basically due to its lack of musical subtly.
Very solid pop record. Lots of hints of what I can only identify as early Arctic Monkeys influence, and at times close to Metric, which feels like a strange comparison indeed. Less out-there than Bowie, though, and I don't get the lyrical appeal just yet.
I am big on Smiths but never heard any of Morrissey's solo work, this is pretty great I am surprised that he holds up without Johnny Marr. Also, Mark Ronson's production is great and filled with obvious glam-rock sensibilities.
No, thanks. I don't enjoy music made my xenophobic pieces of trash.
I always thought I liked The Smiths as a whole package, but maybe I just like Jonny Marr? This album falls flat. I don't feel like crying in a corner like I usually do after listening to The Smiths. (not sure if that's good or bad?)
Fuck Morrissey.
This could be cool if Morrissey wasn't such a douche. 4/10
The beginning of the silliness really. Lack of self editing or tunes means that his whiny voice becomes tiresome. You're the one for me fatty is the only decent song on the album and even that is a bit wearing on the 2nd listen
I went into this ready to hate it as I strongly detest the way Morrissey sings but I was pleasantly surprised! He seemed less 'Morrisseyish' and the instrumental was great, especially the bass. But then the wobbly vocalising started again which dropped a star for me. And then, despite not really listening to lyrics, my ears did catch 'the last truly British people you know'. Lovely. Oh and 'England for the English'. Also lovely. Makes it hard to enjoy music when it's overlaid by a warbling Jingoist. Everyone has a right to have their views. Everyone has a right to sing about those views. I have the right to not listen to it.
Morrissey is definitely missing something without Marr & Co - pretty dry, how did the fatty song make it past the drafts
I started this project to finally get around to listening to some of the classics that have been on my “I must listen to that” list for years. But also to broaden my musical horizons, and discover bands (and genres) I never even knew existed. And I have. After 275 days, 25% through this behemoth of an undertaking, I've learned a lot. I've realised that I'm a much bigger fan of Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno and Black Sabbath than I thought I was. I discovered the brilliant weirdness of Joanna Newsom, the MinuteMen, and Wire. I found out that Sly and the Family Stone and Isaac Hayes were making very different music than I expected them to, far exceeding my expectations. I developed a new appreciation and understanding of jazz. Hell, I even realised that I didn't hate Marilyn Manson as much as I thought I did. What I didn't anticipate is how much of a fan of Morrissey that Robert Dimery was. This is my fourth Morrissey album, including a Smiths record. I've gone into this with an open mind, trying to put aside any preconceived thoughts I've had about any of these artists. But it's frankly exhausting being objective about Morrissey. Instead I usually focus on the creative forces that he surrounds himself with. With The Smiths, that was of course the amazing Johnny Marr. And here it's Ziggy-era Bowie guitar virtuoso Mick Ronson, acting as producer. You can hear that influence right away. When I put this on today, my fiancée immediately said “that doesn't sound like Morrissey!” And she's right. It's like he took Ronson on to help him cosplay as a glam rocker. “Glamorous Glue” is Ronson lifting his own riffs and tempo from Jean Genie. “Certain People I Know” blatantly steals Marc Bolan’s EXACT guitar melody from “Ride A White Swan”. And “I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday” is pretty much just “Life on Mars” mixed with “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide”. And, to be completely fair, those songs are actually enjoyable. But, I mean, that's because I like Bowie and T. Rex, not because I like Morrissey. Morrissey continues his nasally posh warbles, sounding to me like the same insufferable vocal melody for every single song. And insufferable is the word I keep using in these reviews. I mean, just look at the cover of the album. Morrissey flouncing about with an open shirt, showing off. Puke. So, a quarter of the way through this project, and I'm hoping the algorithm is just getting all of the Morrissey out of the way early.
I used to regard Morrissey quite highly. Maybe unwarranted so. But this list has completely taken all of that away by deciding to include almost every single album of him in absurdum. He's become a meme like Elvis Costello. I can understand including every Beatles or Led Zeppelin album which are actually good, but Morrissey? Come on. With that out of the way, I want to say that this might be the worst album of Morrissey we've had on the list. His dragging voice has become too much to endure by now, the melodies are dull, and the lyrics are ever as brooding. Definitely more rocky than his other records, which doesn't really fit him in my opinion. He should stick with his moody pop ballads.
Oh man, I've lost count of how many Morrissey albums have shown up on this list. At this point, I feel like the guy in Green Eggs and Ham. Sam-I-Am keeps insisting that if I just give it one more try, I'll finally love it. After this many Morrissey albums, I can confidently say: I do not like Morrissey here or there. I do not like Morrissey anywhere.
2.0 I know he is well-liked and maybe I am just not in the mood this morning, but not doing it for me. Some songs I almost like
I think the author of this book might have been a scene kid when he was younger because there is a disproportionate amount of post-punk music in this list
Just ok and a lot of the lyrics sound like novelty songs. Fatty and the successful friends one. Surely this is nowhere near the 1001 albums you should hear before you die. He is grating after about 30 minutes when the guitars aren’t jangly fun. Didn’t finish
did not love this one. morrissey being winey w basic rock
**An ok album
Eh
Although better than other Morrissey I have heard, definitely still not my favorite. I have another album a 3 when I wanted to give it a 2.5 so this one gets a 2 to split the difference.
There shouldn't be any Morrissey after Bona Drag
Flat & whiny.
-1 for the racism
I liked the vibe. Melancholic and catchy, soothing. However, not very stand out album for me
I didn't really enjoy the album but can't quite put my finger on why.
It's beige background music, you can put it on and forget its playing. Not awful, just uninspiring
Morrissey's solo career is eh
Good but mostly tuneless - still, pleasant noises
Your Arsenal runs through a variety of sounds. It starts with a couple glammy, almost hard rock songs. "We'll Let You Know" is atmospheric, with almost military drums, and nearly veers into dream pop by the end. After that is a run of upbeat jangle pop songs; "We Hate It" is probably the best, but it feels too short. The last three songs are dramatic ballads, with "Seasick, Yet Still Docked" feeling a bit like a worse "I Know It's Over." A lot of this gives off a similar vibe as that, where Morrissey's lyrics touch on the same themes but with diminishing returns. I like the musical variety - as opposed to just a bunch of indie rock tunes - but very little truly hits, making the album feel a bit scattershot. Plus, "National Front Disco" and "we are the last truly British people" have aged poorly, to say the least. A sometimes good but rarely fun album you could easily skip.
Whyyyyy is there so much of this whiny man
moany moper
4/10 Easily listenable not super memorable
I didn't enjoy it Just not my Thing IG
Too mellow for me
I’m not a fan of Morrissey; he’s a bit depressing for my liking, but I understand why others like him. My music collection doesn’t include any Morrissey.
Kinda boring
No está tan mal pero no lo volvería a escuchar ni aunque me pongan una nueve milímetros en la frente.
Sad and depressing, unsurprisingly
I was looking for some songs and then I found some songs, and heaven knows I'm miserable now
Similar to PJ Harvey, I’ll be happy to not hear another Morrissey album after this project ends.
I'm getting tired of hearing this guy. Favourite Track(s): Glamourous Glue Least Favourite Track(s): We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful
I'm indifferent towards this one. Giving it a 2 because that feels appropriate plus Arsenal is in the album title. Up the Spurs.
It was fine. Not really my jam
His solo stuff really sucks, I think this is the best of it tho
The jangly pop-rock sound is pretty middling on this, but you can't argue with Morrissey's hangdog charisma and his ability to write sad, catchy songs. There are a few weaker tracks, particularly the more straight-faced ballads. What I really can't stomach is that he clearly finds right-wing nationalism cute, quaint, and rather appealing. There's a song about a National Front disco, which sounds kind of funny until you realise the album is drawn to this stuff multiple times, along with the hackneyed idea of being "the last true Englishman". The Front were a violent, racist scourge on Britishness, and Morissey seems to have been out of touch with reality for most of his career. I'm not generally that bothered about a singer's politics, but I wouldn't sit around listening to a song about going to the KKK barbecue either. 2.5*
Synes ikke der var så meget at komme efter her. Alt sammen fint men intet specielt.
IDK if he is trying to be like Billy Crystal or david bowie
Look, preconceived judgements of who he became in his later years and the rhetoric he succumbed to aside... I just don't think this is a good album. Yes, we can give him the benefit of the doubt that when he was writing songs The National Front Disco in 1992, he hadn't drunk the kool aid at that very disco, and he was actually kind of saying it was a bad thing that the lad is being swept up in it.. but honestly with a proper listen I think it's more ambiguous than that and I think maybe this was the start of his decline. I also genuinely do not think this is a good album, it doesn't slap at all like The Smiths stuff did - that I'll give a guilty listen to no problem. But with tracks like You're the One For Me, Fatty, this album is an absolute stinker and left me feeling a bit sick.
whaaaaaaaaaa
There was something so magical in the tension between Johnny Marr's effervescence and Morrissey's melancholy. The tracks here, in stark contrast, are musically banal and emotionally flat. Morrissey seems generally uninspired and almost cynical - practically fulfilling the prophecy of Paint a Vulgar Picture. Unfortunately, his few moments of inspiration (Tomorrow, and We Hate It...) are swallowed in the mediocrity they're swathed in.
2/5. To quote Jpegmafia “I cannot fucking wait until Morrissey dies.” Even divorced from him as a person I just get basically nothing from his solo career. I do like some of the Smiths albums, but solo Morrissey just puts me to sleep.
I hope this is the last Morrissey album I get.
I debated about this one for a while. There are some decent songs on here and it’s not as dour as I have come to expect from Morrissey. I can’t tell if songs like the National front disco were a veiled endorsement, or are just ironic now it’s clear that he’s a xenophobic piece of shit. Landed on a 2.
Gear: Moondrop Variations Artwork: 💪😛🎤 Production (2014 Remaster): 💩⛑️😖 Music: 😲🪨🤷♂️ Rating: ⚔️⚔️/5
I am once again baffled by Morrissey/The Smith's popularity and prevalence on this list. This was such a forgettable album.
I don't mind Morrissey's music (or The Smiths) and this is ok, but it certainly shouldn't be on the 1001 list. Liked Songs Added: We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful
doesn’t really have the mellower sound i like from morrissey and the smiths generally. good to see morrissey is releasing an album on march 6th though, i never have anything to celebrate that day!
Morrissey's melodic sense is as sharp as ever on this record but the backing music is dismally subpar. Guitarist Alan Whyte, Moz's main musical collaborator on this record, is a third-rate composer whose work lacks any kind of spark or inventiveness. (Too bad that Morrissey cut ties with Stephen Street, whose bright and lively music gave the singer's debut album *Viva Hate* so much personality. Oh well.)
I'm not a huge fan of the Smiths and I'm not particularly into Morrissey solo career. The album was slightly better than I expected, but I struggled to go through the whole of it. I don't think I will listen to it again.
Meh, maybe im a ignorant but i don’t really enjoy this type of vocal
I get engaged by the music, then he starts singing and I fall in to the black hole of shut the fuck up. Can you hear yourself?
I was anxious about rating this because of the whole separating the art from the artist thing. Turns out I needn't have worried as it's just a bad album. The Smiths worked in part because of the jarring counterpoint between Marr's cheerfully brilliant guitar riffs and Morrisey's miserable moaning: without Marr, it's just moaning. And in terms of Morrisey's later political persona it's already right here, singing how "we are the last truly British people you will ever know" directly before a song about the National Front, and asking us to believe that, really, it is condemning fascism, honest guv.
Felt like new age Bowie. Some ok songs but not for me. 2.5 goin down.
Every Morrissey album has a couple good songs and a lot of meh, this is no exception. Lots of warbling
Decent
I was excited at first hearing Morrissey’s iconic voice but the album didn’t really excite me as it continued. A lot of the songs sounded too similar and the songwriting wasn’t my favourite. My favourite song was “Seasick, yet Still Docked”
This was a Morrissey album I didn't know so well beyond the singles 'fatty' and 'friends'. I don't think I've missed out. As ever Morrissey's lyrics are weird and even though provoking, but musically this is missing something.
516/1001
meh
So boring, I couldn't finish
Kind of boring. Not much else to say here. On to the next one. Peace!
And here we have a mid album (Morrissey himself included 0 songs from this on his own greatest hits album) from the most famously closeted right-wing nutter on Earth. He has a really, really great singing voice. He's a hypocrite trash-human. Two things can be true at the same time. Influence 3. Quality 3. Hits 1. Intangibles 1. Fuck this guy like he clearly wants it 2.
Racist prick
Meh
An album so forgettable I already forgot that I listened to it.
Endnu et ligegyldigt Morrissey-album. Jeg synes ikke helt, at den her udvælgelse af 1000 albums er alsidig nok.
I like his voice but damn I was bored. I think it's just not my style.
I don't really like the rockabilly stuff or the post punk stuff on here and none of the rest of it stands out to me
Well... It's not about Morrissey, I'm not going to talk about him (and I don't personally know him, so I won't attach my opinions about him to the quality of this album), I promise. But this album is really bland, so tasteless and insipid. It's a very soft rock without much interest. It's not harmful, it could be background music and I wouldn't even care about it. But, well, I've listened to it with all my attention and... it's very boring, to be honest. He has a warm voice (and I think I said the same in my other review), that's fine, but the songs are not of my liking. And about the lyrics... Well, I won't talk about it. Some doesn't inspire me in the very least. So, yeah, I didn't like this album.
I don't get Morrissey.
“We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful” is fun. Beyond that, this is an exercise in Morrissey ironically singing about things that he now professes to hate. What a prick!
No need for this many morrissey albums
Boring as usual
More morrissey, more whining
OK. 2/5
Did people in the early 90s think “joining the National Front Disco” and all the references to England for the English and being the last true Britons was so on the nose that it had to be ironic? Man, real egg on our face moment there. Bonus star for how sexy he looks on the cover though.
Morrissey is a c*nt, and I find him pretty lazy as a lyricist. I love The Smiths, but mostly because of the other three guys. As far as solo Moz goes, I can find both songs I like on one release. I’ll say there were some funny lines. One thing about Morrissey is he has a British sense of humor and I appreciate that.
This album was a rough first listen tbh. As someone who isn’t British, it was hard to relate to and the music was meh. Morrissey has an amazing voice no doubt and his politically charged lyrics would definitely resonate with someone from Britain in the 90s but as someone who wasn’t alive in the 90s and not British, it was just a mid listen. Maybe another listen would do me good. Not gonna put a fav or least fav cause they were all underwhelming.
He's a boring weird try hard.
Okay-ish.
Its Morissey
I was always lukewarm on the Smiths ... and just not crazy about Morrissey solo.
80's sound
Some cool arrangements, but mostly mediocre material.
This one didn’t need to be on here
Morrissey is not my jame I think
Some parts are nice but utterly forgettable. I couldn’t even tell when Spotify fell off the album and started shuffling across other generic UK bands that sounded equally bland.
I feel sad for the anguished, love starved Morris, see. My take away from Your Arsenal is that he needs to add several new/different tunes to his arsenal. He now gets classified as a “one sound” not so wonderful musician and I just listened to the same song for 40 minutes. And this song is not as good as his previous efforts. (2,3*s) Unfortunately, we’re still not done with this Brit.
Your Arsenal had potential, too bad Morrissey had to ruin it. Started out pretty in with the heavy guitar on the first few songs but it unraveled quickly. Good finish though with top track "Tomorrow." Too much Morrissey on the list. This one lands between Quarry and Viva Hate at 2.08 stars. Not really the one for me, Fatty...
This list creator has way too much of a hard on for Morrissey/Smiths. There's only so much of his schtick that I can take. Your Arsenal was a little bit more rock and roll but Morrissey's vocal styling still brings it into the same realm as prior entries. Had this not landed within a couple weeks of a couple other Morrissey albums I might not have minded it but unfortunately its a victim of timing and overexposure. There's altogether too much Morrissey on this list and Your Arsenal and future entries are going to suffer as a result. In small doses I don't think I mind it, but as I listen to more albums there are diminishing returns and its actually hurting my opinion of the tunes. I'm really burned out on him already and suspect there might still be more coming. 1.87 stars
-1 star for Morrissey not sure why this book's author is obsessed with his more mediocre albums ngl
🙄
A whole lotta aimlessly rambling soft pop tracks, like most other Morrissey/Smith releases. Some ok songs here and there but otherwise underwhelming. 2/5
2/5. A National Front Disco indeed. A couple of slower ones are decent but the big sound at the start just doesn’t work.
Not interesting - generic.
1.7
I've never listened to this album (26). Morrissey, the Smiths, just not my vibe.
Decent, aside from the vocals. Oops, it's a Morrissey solo album, the vocals are supposed to be the point, aren't they?
Not sure how I feel about this. The album cover itself would put me off from ever picking it up. The music isn't bad but not something I will find myself returning to.
Produced by Bowie and then went hard right. Hmm.
Eh
2.5
I don't know. Maybe it's too precious. Maybe I just don't love his artistic voice and literal voice as a singer/song writer. I’ve also read that he’s a bit of a contrarian xenophobic knob, but I wasn't privy to that before the listen so i can't even blame that for shaping my experience The Smiths had Marr and it was enough shred to balance it all out for me. This isn't big enough, bold enough, or groovy enough to grab hold of me.
Generally just a bit samey and boring, 2/5. Opening and closing tracks were the highlights of the album for me.
Familiar but other than that, it was just kind of chill rock
Never liked Morrissey back in the day, this didn’t do anything to change my mind. Just find his songs really boring.
Did NOT expect this to open with some bastardization of surf rock! First two tracks were almost good enough that I worried I might like something this POS created. Good thing he lived up to my initial expectations by filling the rest of the album with the usual whiney, self indulgent, melancholic crap.
eh
Rockabilly feel.. not my typical go-to music, but it’s not bad.
Arabada camdan dışarı bakarken dinlenir ama aradabada camdan dışarı bakasım yok yinede idare eder 🙏🏻
so boring and musically uninspired. morrissey has a great voice, aside from being the most fuckin annoying guy ever. but like many have pointed out in their reviews, his solo stuff makes it painfully obvious that the heart of the smiths and the talent of the smiths largely belonged to his less annoying, more humble band mates.
3/5.
100% the first time hearing any of these songs. Not at all a fan of Morrissey or The Smiths. Nonetheless, here we go. This album is okay. The vocals are droning. Not enough variety it them to keep me engaged. He is a good singer of course. I don't know, I think I need to listen to his works without knowing its him to judge it properly. But honestly, for me, everything on this album is just okay. 2.3/5
I just like the Smiths, anything after that just feels like more of Morrissey doing his same thing. It just had a time and place and it doesnt need however many solo albums after that
As I listen to this I find myself wondering "why have a Morrissey album on this list when everyone knows he's only worthy listening to on The Smiths?" definitely one of life's mysteries.
Your Arsenal is the third solo album from Morrissey, who became famous from his work with the Smiths. For this album, Morrisey added a rockabilly undercurrent to the glam rock he had produced. Your Arsenal is about Morrissey's objection to the "Americanization" of British culture. The defining element of his sound is still his distinct baritone, and the melodrama in his lyrics. The strength of his voice only goes so far; when Morrissey wanders into the histrionic, these songs become hard to take. The self-pity - "and all of my life, no one has ever given me anything" - and the drama - "my love is as sharp as a needle in the eye" - are too much.
Ehhhhhh. More morrissey…..
Ok songs. I can’t stand the guys voice droning on and on. I can’t listen to the Smiths either.
Eh. Perfectly fine. Just nothing really jumped out at me. Never will feel the need to listen again.
An odd one this. It pulls from a bunch of different genres (glam rock, 80s indie, rockabilly) but doesn't really excel at any of them. The more indie leaning stuff in particular makes it clear how much The Smiths needed the whole band - and particularly Johnny Marr's guitar. The slower, quieter tracks towards the end work best here as they at least allow Morrissey's vocals to shine (and when he's not buried beneath guitars he still sounds great).
Not bad. Gets boring fast
Yeesh
Not bad, but pretty common, and I am not a fan of his voice. I don't really understand what people find appealing about Morrissey, but anyway. Not really my jam.
The Smiths without the edge.
Love the guitar and Morrissey isnt as annoying as I thought he'd be. I liked the rock aspect of it I just wish he was less whiny
a few very good songs but mostly mid
A little more upbeat than I expected. Still couldn’t really get into it. 2/5 Probably won’t listen again
Some really catchy riffs to offset the whining. Hated it much less than expected.
Massively jaded
Not incredibly captivating, fun song names though
2.5 stars
Morrissey is a racist douchebag and this is mediocre rubbish. And all those people who think he ever writes music rather than words are idiots.
Despite a strong start, it quickly regresses to where I expected it to be. 2 stars
-I fear im not really feeling this one much. none of Morrissey’s albums have spoken to me nearly as much as The Smiths stuff ig, this is probably my least fave of the three ive heard -I will give credit to the creativity with the exploration of American rockabilly… the first few songs had a cool vibe. idk it just kinda fell off -Favorites are You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side and Glamorous Glue
Ok 2/5
I always try to give Morrissey albums a chance and I always regret it.
Fine but nothing special
This is the fourth Morrissey album on the list and I think that fact seriously stretches the credibility of whoever makes the selections. Maybe they gave it extra credit for only being mostly dead.
Moz doing his best tough guy impersonation?
Honestamente no lo volvería a escuchar 5.0 Pd: Gracias Pink Floyd por salvar la semana
Yawn soz
2.5/5 - elements of everything i like, but it didn’t come together to make something interesting/great, in my opinion. Guitar from 3:00 onwards on Tomorrow was perf though
Nowhere near as enjoyable as Viva Hate for me
Very British…
Well, this was better than the last Morrissey album. Favorite line: "They break their necks and can't afford to get them fixed."
It's not great, in my opinion. I think with this album I discovered that I really just don't like his voice... which kinda makes an entire album really unpleasant to listen to. please no more morrissey
Better than I expected coming into it. Don’t know why the guy who made this list likes him so much though. 2 stars! Which is impressive for Morrissey.
I’ll repeat myself, and with how this list goes I’m sure I’ll do it again, but I’m just not a Morrissey fan. This one was a little more tolerable than the others, but the lyrics were still insufferable from time to time. If it were more like The Smiths I’d probably enjoy it more and give it a three, but this one is getting a two.
My expectations were pretty low coming into this album, so I liked the music more than I thought I would. The problem is that I just can't get past Morrissey himself. Not even looking him up outside of his music. He just sounds so pretentious in his lyrics.
Nicht unhörbar, aber super langweilig
More boring new wave shit
Not a fan
Morrissey album #271. Still sad and insufferable. I will never understand how he came to deserve this amount of praise. Disclaimer: I will award the next Morrissey album to appear on this list 1 star out of sheer spite.
Glam Rock being whiny ruined the album for me while the Rock part kept me hoping it might turn out differently listening to the whole album.
2/5. Almost got me there, but there are too many Morrissey albums on here, and here is another one that is okay but not great. The rockabilly and upbeat vibe helps to stand Morrissey when he usually decides to have instruments just to have something there. The lyrics are not something I really paid attention to and although that is usually a highlight for Morrissey, it was nice not to have to pay attention too much. Then the counter to that is that of what I did here, it felt nonsensical. Can't really win but I enjoyed the music at least. Best Song: Glamorous Glue, You're the One for Me Fatty, Tomorrow
Boring album. 2.5 stars. Side note this guy probably banged a lot of woman based on his album image.
Heard of Morrissey before, but never listened to him. His voice is decent, but the songs are just blah. Best song: Certain People I Know
90’er indie, lidt op og ned
Good music shame morrissey is such a insufferable prick
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOSQFrf7UtI
The smiths but without any of the qualities brought by the other members and all the controversy remaining. Why are there 4 morrissey solo albums on this list
All of the Smiths sounds the same. All of Morrissey’s music sounds the same, just slightly worse
A not as dark pop sounding Morrissey is not the brooding goth Morrissey.
Eh. Its a bit too much 'Morrissey' for me. Some fascistic ass lyrics in there. And that's coming from someone who liked Viva Hate.
What were we smoking in 1992? If one can last past the execrable fatty song, it gets better (maybe being inspired by Bowie’s Rock and Roll Suicide on ‘I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday’ helped?). But by then it’s already late. Way too late…
There is an awful lot of Morrissey on this list. I occasionally try to come round to the way of thinking that he can write some good songs and his voice maybe isn’t the most annoying thing in pop… but then… there’s soon a reminder. This time it was the chorus of We Hate It When… “It’s really laughable: ha ha ha ha”. This guy is not the talented poet people keep telling me he is. The album title for example, is a delicious triple entente: tribalism, weapons and arse. I just… don’t think that’s all that clever? Probably a 3 star album but rating it 2 coz this guy is so over represented on this list.
Not _quite_ as shitty as the other Morrissey album assigned to me in this list.
I love We Hate It and Fatty. Elsewhere and he's a silly old racist sausage.
this nigga so boring
Such an arrogant prick. Even his music is obnoxious. Sorry Morrissey, I dislike you more than Moby.
Eh
Annoying and whiny. I know there’s good Morrisey out there, but not on this album.
Wasn’t really feeling anything Smiths adjacent this day. Wasn’t bad, just not feeling it. Maybe listen another time
Nicht unhörbar, aber super langweilig
Morrissey is such a twat.
A few moments of promise which were quickly snubbed out.
Started pretty good, but quickly faded into self loathing and non stop whining from this pretentious asshole. If he wasn't so punchable, he could make a decent record. Alas, he goes into his normal woe is me schtick to the annoyance of this particular listener.
This man has one of the MOST gorgeous voices. So it’s strange to hear it paired with tangy guitars. An upbeat disco beat ain’t it either. And why waste time on long instrumental breaks? This album is just all kinds of wrong. What a waste.
Thought this was fine. Fuck Morrissey
I know I've heard the first song on here before, but the rest was unknown and will probably stay that way. Some good lines, I liked "We hate it when our friends become successful" that felt very modern day. Otherwise it was a forgettable album.
I don't like the Smiths but at least they picked something to stick to. Ineffectual rock is worse. There's that clip of Morrissey and George Michael talking about Joy Division where Morrissey goes on about Joy Division's pretentious use of fascist imagery and how their conception of the world was completely false. Very funny considering how Morrissey gets attention. Rating for the music only, which doesn't inspire enough reaction to get 1 star. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
I liked this alright, in a neutral sort of way, but it really lacks something compared to the Smiths. Sounds Generic New Wave in a way the Smiths do not
I liked the grimy instrumentals, but not much else.
Blegh. The worst of Britpop and glam rock. While it's melodic it's so vanilla that it isn't worthwhile. Won't be returning to it any time soon.
Ugh not my thing. I know little about Morrissey but he's apparently an asshole. Not sure why exactly but that's what I know about him. And he was in The Smiths. That's it I guess. This was tolerable but not great.
Toont duidelijk de meerwaarde van Johnny Marr bij the Smiths. 2.4
1. your zide - 1 2. glue - 1 3. knouu - 1.5 4. dizco - 1 5. people - 0 6. friendz - 1 7. fatty - 0 8. zea zick - 1.5 9. zomeday - 1.5 10. tomorrouu - 1.5
Ihan kiva: biisit selkeitä ja laulu kuljeskelee eteenpäin suhteellisen määrätietoisesti. Itse musiikki? Ei sen ihmeellisempää.
I was a big Smiths fan from the getgo, but even they started to sound a bit samey by the time they folded. And I think I had the same problem with Morrissey’s solo output. This was the third solo album & by the end of it, I have to say the same thing was happening. True, Mick Ronson’s more muscular production gave it slightly more oomph. The rockabilly feel of Certain People I Know was a welcome change mid-disc, but really, I was bored with his voice long before the end of this.
The most rock of Morrissey's output. Glam and rockabilly echoes, with great band and production by Mick Ronson. But the songs are still Morrisey songs: three note, whinge-fests. I also find his current public persona so xenophobic and unpleasant that I really can't give him any time. Will not listen again.
Not bad, but wouldn't give it more than one listen.

Geigh
Sigh. Well. The cover would fit nicely in my club of 1star losers and the rockabilly songs might even put it there but I just don't care either way.
Look… I’m just not a Morrissey fan, okay?
Listen, I know the guy's a twat. But that aside, I did not enjoy this. Okay, but seriously, with that actually aside, I found the Smiths in my formative years, and I do love their music very much. But I don't need Morrissey alone. The song I liked the most was the opener, and I figure there's enough great Arctic Monkeys songs I could listen to instead if I'm in the mood for that style. Still, it wasn't an assault on the ears so I won't go as low as 1 star.
Ok. I can't get into Morrissey. This album was decent. 2/5
This was better than I expected going into it. I’ve never cared for morrisey’s voice, it just irks me for some reason. So I didn’t love the singing on here but it was tolerable. And the songs were not bad. I really only liked We’ll Let You Know, that song was cool. Other than that I didn’t mind it but I would never return to this album.
Somehow he has become a bit cool nowadays - I think some people think they are buying a Robbie Williams album with the cover photos... (Have we actually seen Morrissey and Robbie in the same room???) But he really is just miserable, and not in a good way.
Meh
Morrissey is a very confusing man, whose political views are rather oddly disjointed. I only mention this because of the National Front Disco and the fiasco it caused which made me read more about his personal life. Whether it was ironic or not, I feel this album is weaker than his work with The Smiths. His voice is beautiful, but the writing feels less engaging, the subjects discussed aren’t as interestingly broody, and the tracks are a lot more dull.
As someone who likes The Smiths, this is insanely boring.
Repetitive crap
Hmmm, Morrissey without the Smiths. We ridiculed this album at the time and a repeat listen doesn’t make that a bad decision. Tried to be open minded and listen to / read the lyrics. A lot of the fascist accusations were unfounded for sure but it’s hard to be that discerning. It’s ambiguous at best. Like Simon without Garfunkel he seems to have lost his way.
Surprisingly boring. Started interestingly in being heavier than I expected and with the rockabilly twist. However that only held brief interest and it tailed off pretty dramatically thereafter. Next….
He's a witty lyricist but none of the songs grab me. Not entirely sure why he's held in such high esteem, probably because he's northern.
His music is very depressing
This started out pretty strong! I thought this was gonna be a heavier, more rockin' Morrissey, and I woulda had time for that, but it fell off pretty quickly, and by "You're the One For Me, Fatty" it had soured considerably. Screw this guy. Fave track - "Glamorous Glue" I reckon.
There are some good moments in this album but it’s general quite forgettable. And it’s Morrissey, so it gets a penalty. Fuck Morrissey.
This kind of sounds like an AI generated album. He's not supposed to be singing to guitar tunes like this. And it's nothing original at all.
Die Stimme ist ok. Das Gehabe bei manchen Liedern billig. Das Albumcover: geschmacklos.
The more I listen to The Smiths, the more I come to realize that Johnny Marr was the genius and Morrissey was just the lead singer. 'Your Arsenal' is the first Morrissey solo effort I've listened to and it only cements that belief. It's an OK album but it's definitely not The Smiths. To its credit, Mick Ronson's production does help. As always with Morrissey, we need to try to separate the awful human being of the artists from the art. I'm willing to do that for The Smiths but it's quite a bit harder when so much of the lyrics sound so Brexity. Imagine thinking that the line 'We vote Conservative' is edgy. Also, 'You're the One for Me, Fatty'? Really Morrissey?
So, I like Morrissey’s vocal style, but he’s such a jackass. The best songs on this album happen to be the ones where the lyrics are especially eye rolly. I also missed the rest of The Smiths. The instrumentation was only so-so. 2.8.
The most interesting thing I found on this album are Morrissey 's abs. Beyond that, I didn't take away much of anything but annoyance from the album. While I was delighted when it ended, I can stretch my imagination into seeing how some people may enjoy it.
mediocrrissey
karjalainen-k=arjalainen... kannattaisi surullinen brittipoika mietti sitä vähän ennen kun luulee bretoni saksoni viikinkihuora olevansa jotai... HENRIKKI VITTU KAHDEKSAS!!!!!! OLI OIKEASSSA!!!! BRITANNIALLE OMA KIRKKO!!!!!! paavia palvellaan polvillaan.... parapetit pystyyn ja puolustamaan... PERKELE!!!!!!!!! tell me tell me tellme tahat you lvoe meeeeee... youre gonna need someone on you
Some bands I was into in 2003ish loved Morrissey and the smiths so I tried hard to appreciate them.. alas I will never quite have the same enthusiasm as those emo bands.
pre listening notes: i know nothing about this honestly expect that i think people make fun of this for being male manipulator music You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side - well so far it sounds like the singer from depeche mode with a rock vibe? very 80s. it’s a bop ngl Glamorous Glue - big fan of the music and mixing on this one, very easy listening music. the guitar and drums are chefs kiss Well Let You Know - i will admit i’m having difficulty paying attention to the lyrics. however what does he mean by we are the last truly british people you will ever know?! what was the political climate in england at this point in history? knowing the context of the music might help here The National Front Disco - is he not just singing about england and being english? like it sounds good but the lyrics. what do they mean Certain People I Know - is this about capitalists? maybe he’s not being as vague as i’m reading it. it’s catchy tho We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful - this song is annoying. i dislike his noises he makes. this music is for british people. You’re The One For Me, Fatty - he doesn’t really have that much to say i don’t think. i do want to take this opportunity to again emphasize that it sounds good but the lyrics? also i don’t like 80s music very much. Seasick, yet Still Docked - this is my fav one so far bc of the lyrics yet it’s the most toned back musically. not a negative but i think if we could combine the musicality i know is there with good lyrics.. then i might really like one of these songs I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday - i like this one. not many notes but it’s kind of what i asked for! i couldn’t listen to it regularly bc the music is grand and epic and not my vibe but i’m not upset at this one Tomorrow - i’m annoyed by him i’m sorry i dislike repetitive lyrics and it’s so glam rock and i don’t vibe w glam rock & the 80s overall i understand the appeal but this very much was not my personal taste. i was excited going in but i was disappointed. i think i have to rate this lower than the kings of leon one bc at least that album had two tracks i liked on it. 2/5
I didn’t know this man sung for the smiths and so the first song I said huh, this sounds a lot like the smiths. We’ll let you know - Very meh sound. Nothing interesting going on. You’re the one for me, fatty - lol what Tomorrow - this is the first song I really liked. But also, what??
Morrissey makes pretty effortlessly easy to listen music but this felt like very little effort and some predictably atrocious lyrics
Decent album but not my style of music for personal reasons...
I generally hate Morrissey but this was better than I expected. Not as bleak and maudlin as usual. Very good guitar work helps a lot.
Yeah, no. He’s still a piece of shit.
Very dad-rock, which is just not my jam. I struggled to listen to the whole thing.
Songs I’d expect to hear on the Shrinking soundtrack- that’s not a bad thing.
I'm a big fan of The Smiths, and I like Viva Hate, but this just doesn't do it for me. Morrissey too far removed from Johnny Marr is just all the bad parts of Morrissey with very little of the good.
I'm going to put this firmly in the "Enh, it's okay" category.
In my opinion, another overrated artist. I know people love his work but I just don't find it entertaining.
First I was excited for a Morrissey album but the songs especially the lyrics felt so bland.
Indie, softrock, mid, male, limited variation, where are the hits? Why this album? Don’t get it…
10th-grade-journal-rockabilly Added: We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful
4/10 Really not a fan of the man, gave it a go though Morrissey without the Smiths ain’t it His instinct towards harder rock is a bad one Musically this is often poor But the boy can sing, sounds unique, says interesting things. Why bury a lot of it under sludgy guitar? Some of the lyrics and titles (“The National Front Disco”) hit different now that his politics are clear Best: I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday
Nothing memorable here:/
Just ok
Some decent moments (songs 1,4) but overall nothing stands out.
This is not as good as the previous Morrissey solo effort. Same kind of quirky storytelling and odd lyrics as usual with him/The Smiths, but it just doesn't work as well here. Not sure why, but not for me. 2/5.
The music itself is fine, but then I look at the album cover and song titles and remember how much of a fucking pretentious, racist asshole Morrissey is.
Highlight: We'll Let You Know Better than You Are the Quarry, but not by much. Overall: 3/10
Bleh, I find him whiny.
Well... I love the smiths, but god damn Morrissey's solo stuff is just not it. I actually like the first song which gave me high hopes, but it turns out that's just because it was Mick Ronson on the guitar (absolute legend) and the rest of the album was bog standard solo Morrissey. Its lucky Ronson could redeem this with the first track or it would have been a one. 2/5
always looked at him as self centered and not this visionary that others do. more of the same, sorry not sorry.
Morrissey is an insufferable pecker. His band, on the other hand, is quite talented. I hope they found better work after this.
I was working away, kind of bored with the music, and then a catchy and interesting song came on, I got excited and thought 'oh hey finally the album is catching a groove!' but in reality the album had ended, and Spotify had shuffled to another artist. The most exciting part of this album for me really was when it was over.
