Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Still such an iconic voice. Classy, up-tempo, fun to listen to. The songs do all sound very similar, though.
I've gotten a couple of Frank Sinatra albums up to this point on the list. I'd been pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed them, since I don't really enjoy this style of crooning jazz relative to a lot of other genres. This album is a lot more like what I thought a Sinatra album would be like, which is to say a bit boring. He has a beautiful voice that suits the music very well, but it all leaves me feeling a bit flat. It's not bad, it's just not for me 3/5
You came here for Sinatra's voice, and Sinatra provides. You can very obviously tell that this is included because the list makers had no clue what to do for the 1950s besides Sinatra, Elvis and maybe a sprinkling of Duke Ellington and Early Coltrane (No Saxophone Colossus? Seriously?) Still, this slice of Sinatra is perfectly adequate for anyone who wants to feel like they're going through a walk through the nicer parts of New York at night in the 1950s (without the systemic issues plaguing the US even harder then than they are now). Can he stop saying "make whoopee," though? 3.5/5.
Nice but gets old quick.
Classic Frank. A couple of well known songs and ones that I will revisit. The album was relatively short. I don't think I will listen to whole thing again though.
absolutely brutal way to find out I’m not a swingin’ lover
I respect the man as an artist but this wasn’t hugely my thing
It sure was a Frank Sinatra album! Decent, not great.
A really enjoyable listen. A crooner improved my morning.
Legendary voice, fairly jazzy accompaniment
My father loved Frank Sinatra , My Way was played on his funeral. I do admire his voice but this music is just not for me, too pleasant for the ears. So 3 stars for the voice.
I'm not a big fan of this type of thing but there isn't anything about it that is hard to listen to. Every song is the same but it passes the time.
Those who know me, know for sure that this will go high in my list. Enjoyed the album and might revisit this later. 3.5/5
Very good, though I prefer his record with Jobim, a soft masterpiece. His phrasing is exquisite even to a grunge dirtbag like me, and the words he chose to apply himself to are some of the wittiest. A good few hits, a smattering of filler.
Hard to criticize this in context, as it's high quality stuff. If ever I want to listen to prime Sinatra I know where to go. However, you can see why the advent of rock'n'roll was so exciting in the late '50s. My youngest, with no prompting from me, opined that this was "boring music for dads; just because he's a good singer doesn't make it a good song" following up with "jazz is badz". He then requested some Ty Segall. I guess that when Sinatra sings, against Nelson Riddle strings, the youth really do wish he would take a vacation. Unpick that Mark!
I found this to be a really fun listen.
Go-to balladeja fav Anything goes
No doubt that this is full of good stuff, but just not what I’m looking for in an album.
It was okay. I can appreciate his voice and the genre, but all the songs sounded the same.
Clever lyrics. Easy listening. As expected.
Not the biggest Sinatra fan anymore
Fun. Good for background when relaxing or socialising. Also much better recording quality than I expected.
Its incredibly cheesy sounding, a relic of a bygone era, Making Whoppee is like a 50s version of WAP. Overall mid, can't imagine you'd too many choices of artist pre-Beatles tho
So here's the thing - it's Frank Sinatra. It's clear immediately why he's the legend that he is, and the swing sounds on this are undeniably classics. So I pay the respects that it's due. I just can't rate it too high, as it's never a sound that I seek.
great songs and vibe overall, just incredibly repetitive
A classic voice, and an album I probably would never have listened to were it not for this project. Not to my usual taste but I can definitely appreciate the talent.
3. Would listen again but probably wouldn't buy.
I like Frank Sinatra but I prefer his quieter albums.
I had a Sinatra phase but I don’t think I ever listened to any of his albums all the way through, except for “Best Of”s. There were some gems here, but each song really felt kinda same-y.
If you have a fever for old-time crooners, a dose of Frank Sinatra is just what the doctor ordered. If you wanted to describe Frank's music to a newbie, play this album, it's a classic Sinatra album and it's a perfect example of his sound. He's the original Bublé and no one can croon the standards like Sinatra!
I mean, it's Frank Sinatra, it's inoffensive. I don't really care for crooner music but if I've gotta listen to it Sinatra is the best.
Strong 5/10
sinatra's a great natural singer, and nelson riddle's band is tight as a drum, but, like, people DO talk about how all these songs sound the same, right?
The songs are all pretty good, but it's all the same song.
Love me some Sinatra
Mis favoritas: You Make Me Feel So Young; You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me; Too Marvelous To Words; Pennies From Heaven; Love Is Here To Stay; I've Got You Under My Skin.
In the midst of the first of several comebacks, the future Ol' Blue Eyes set sights on a loose concept: songs for young couples that are blissfully in love with one another and would stand the test of time. With Songs for Swingin' Lovers, Frank Sinatra bats a perfect average and glides succinctly into the swinging sensations that the album calls for; songs that not only puts pep in his step after the overwhelming gloom of In the Wee Small Hours but songs that would end up becoming some of the many defining anthems of his career. It may not be for those who become bored with the lack of variety throughout the album but there is no mistaking that this is one of the many Sinatra hallmarks. Favorites: You Make Me Feel So Young, It Happened in Monterey, You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me, You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me, I've Got You Under My Skin, Makin' Whoopee, Anything Goes.
aight
It's Sinatra, but nothing so special
Great voice and nostalgia. Does get repetitive after a while, especially for the length of the album.
I enjoy frank so it’s been a good album so far
I can appreciate the album and why people enjoy it. However, for me it doesn't do much. I could enjoy listening to it in the background, perhaps while making dinner?
Its alright in the background but there were only one or two songs that I actually added to my songs.
Tbh all songs sound pretty similar, but can't beat frank
yeah.
its aight
Its fine
Solid record. Lots of classics on here. Some of the songs feel formulaic, tho.
There are some fantastic songs here (I've Got You Under My Skin, Pennies Fron Heaven, You Make Me Feel So Young etc.) but also just quite a few forgettable or outright cringe ones (Making Whoopee succckks)
2.5/5 He has a great voice and the songs are good, but I can not listen to his music for more than one album. It gets repetitive and a bit boring. But overall not bad.
Only listened to the first few songs, but it's Frank Sinatra. You kinda get what he's about. He's good but not necessarily stand-out. I'd put on his singles, but maybe not a whole album
Frank Sinatra is one of those musical icons from a bygone era that I could never relate to. Whether it's my inability to hear beyond my own time and place, or my distaste for his reputed ties to the mob, or his deliberate efforts at seeming effortlessly cool, or maybe it's that he's so iconic that I can't separate his performances from the schlocky parody that it evokes (e.g., Bill Murray's SNL lounge act singing "Star Wars!"). In the end, what does it really matter? I don't fancy Sinatra's big band, jazz, swingin' hip super-cool guy vibe, but it doesn't make me run for the hills. I just don't get how everyone else seems to think it divine. I was tired of him around the halfway point of this album.
Best/Worst: Idk none are bad but the whole album sounds like one song which is a bit dull
Classic Sinatra... Not my type of genre, but good for background music
I liked it I didn’t love it
Cozy music, but very similar one song to another. The voice of Sinatra is, obviously, the great part of the album. I prefer more instrumental jazz.
Ok, I understand his importance for music history, but it's pretty hard to enjoy this album with so many repetitive songs. I guess it is much better when you are someone who enjoys his style. That is not my case, so I give three stars for the relevance.
Pretty solid. Not my favorite Sinatra tho
A lot better than Buble, but not my cup of tea. Could be improved by listening with a cup of tea.
Songs For Swingin' Lovers! is standard Sinatra. Swaggering, cool, listenable, one or two hits but not the greats, 3/5 easy.
Nice album but nothing special
Not really my style, but well made music.
Obviously very accomplished with some all-time classics, but left me a little bored.
Pennies from Heaven and Anyhing goes is fantastic. Classic Sinatra but I don’t think it’s his best
It was alright, pretty boring though at times.
Might be the season, or the Christmas-decked malls full of rosy-cheeked families and shiny wrapping paper everywhere, but I found Frank Sinatra in this album impossibly charming. As much as I love how much music has evolved and the weird places it’s gone, there’s something timeless about one person singing love songs in front of an orchestra. Kinda see why so many people swooned to Sinatra; there’s something about his voice and the arrangement that makes you feel like you’re the only two people falling in love in the world. The book’s bit for SFSL ends with “Truly, the art of the three-minute pop song begins and ends here”, and it’s hard to argue with that statement. SFSL was meant to be a hit in its day and I’m surprised to say that it holds up as a classic.
While I agree with other reviewers that it's hard to distinguish one song from the next, that's not always a bad thing. There's an iconic and classic sound here that simultaneously feels both timeless and representative of a distinct period of time. This was an enjoyable listen, and although there isn't anything remarkable or award-winning happening here (yes even Frank's vocals, as pleasing as they are), it was such a nice listen. I'd love to own this on vinyl and put it on as background music on a lazy Sunday.
Sinatra's voice is a classic and this is a smooth, velvety listen. Great for this time of year! However, the songs do all sound very alike. Not too much of a problem if you're really in the mood for it, the consistency can be comforting in a way. Pennies From Heaven is a classic song!
Fine. Frank Sinatra. I get it. You’re a thing. You win.
Every song literally sounded the same but that sound is classic. Therefore, 3.
Some signature tracks with some lesser known ones that give the former a run for their money. Still, this album kinda blends together - a little too well for its own good.
He can sing. Not my style
Great album
Importante escutar pela história.
Frank Sinatra is an amazing singer and a historical legend. His songs are great and at their time were some of the best music made. This album is an upbeat compilation of songs that are happy and enjoyable. Some are much better than others in his wide repertoire but listening to Sinatra is always a good time. 7.1/10
Not a bad album, especially for what it is; a swing album. Nothing special to me however.
Not bad
Okay Mr. S sangin’ on this jawn 👀 This makes me feel cool and luxurious, dove in hand. Imagine how I’d feel if I was old and straight 😎 As smooth and pleasant as this is, I don’t feel much of a connection so I don’t think there’s much replay value in this for me.
3.5 stars. I like the ones where he is sad much better. For just about every one of these standards, there's a vocalist or arrangement I prefer much more than "ol' blue eyes" (they called him that because he was old and had blue eyes) - e.g. "Too Marvelous for Words" sounds really square here compared to a good Louis Prima live recording during his marriage to Keely Smith where they're just egging each other on onstage
Not a huge crooner fan but Frank is probably one of the best. 3 stars for making it listenable.
Classic! I’m not always in the mood for Sinatra, but when I am, this is a good one to come back to. Less over the top than some other (later) recordings I’ve heard.
Legend ofc. Album itself is good but the full thing is a little too much old school, even for me.
For those that either don't like, or are new to, Sinatra, there are few better albums to start with.
Heard it before?: Yes, just once before Enjoy it?: Yes, feelings about Sinatra’s true talent Aside, his music is kept simple and his amazing voice undeniably makes for easy listening and enjoying the time of the genre without being there Favourite song: I don’t think there’s a bad song on here but I would go with, Track 6 - Old Devil Moon
Classics, enjoyable, but personally I definitely have to be in the right mood to seek it out.
Gave me a craving for red wine and a crushing sense of loneliness
What you'd expect from a Sinatra album
My first time listening with intent to Frank Sinatra. The quality of his voice (such a nice timbre) and delivery (especially his phrasing) are certainly remarkable. The supporting arrangements are sweet and creative, especially the voicings of the highly varied instruments. There was certainly more here for me than simple reflection of bygone days and the caricature it has come to represent. Still… this album fails to draw me in emotionally. This isn’t music that hits me at a gut level.
One of the 20th century’s most iconic voices takes on big band standards, with arranger Nelson Riddle (who you may know for his theme to Batman ‘66) giving them a jazzier touch. These songs may run on into each other, but Sinatra is incredibly charming and sings them almost with a wry wink.
Gives you a good mood. Sinatra's voice is brilliant, but overall it's a filler music for me.
Its basically a dozen Ocean 11 soundtracks rolled into 1 album
It’s of a time and of a style. Feel like I’m in my grandparents living room after dinner and a full dessert, sitting on the couch.
Iconic voice of course. The album sounds pretty samey to me but that's probably just an artifact of listening with a more modern ear.
You make me feel so young -rather forgettable It happened in Monterey - great instrumental, charming song👍 You’re getting to be a habit with me- Not much to this song, don’t like the conceit You brought a new kind of love to me - they didn't believe in short titles! Great instrumental but don’t like lyrics Too marvellous for words-seems quite similar to previous songs Old devil Moon - great combo of Frank and band👍 Pennies from heaven - have heard this song but not this version. Alright Love is here to stay- cute lyrics, seems a bit cliché but it is old lol I’ve got you under my skin- bit meandering at times but damn that instrumental😍 I thought about you - bit of heartbreak? Alright We'll be together again - slow, bit boring tbh Makin’ whoopee- this is jarring lol Swingin' down the lane- potentially catchy?👍 Anything goes- love this song, this version isn’t my fave How about you?- Idk who James Durante is Early album on the list, just fine to me, definitely effective background music for a specific vibe 3/5
Fun but the “Whoopie” part is creepy
Listening to Sinatra over supper or just a few songs through others is wonderful. I love his voice and his music takes us straight back to the 50s. However, close listening to a full album quietly becomes torture. The brass punches and somewhat empty phrases he sang become very heavy to bear.
Definitely not something I would usually listen to but I ended up add three songs to my likes on Spotify. Makes me want to swish around in a fedora.
Not usually my style of music, but I made to to the end and actually quite enjoyed it. Very polished, very brash. The album almost makes a statement, although about what, I'm not exactly sure.
It took this long to get to an album from the 50’s… You make me feel so young is okay, very big sound for the 50’s, just really not my kinda thing. It happened in Monterey is good, I guess I like the drumming quite a bit. It’s off with these songs they all just blend into 1 mush like I didn’t even realise you’re getting to be a habit with me was playing until a minute in. You brought the love to me is okay it kinda slows down the album but it’s still all the same kinda thing. Too marvellous for words is okay the lyrics are good but that doesn’t benefit Sinatra because he doesn’t write his own songs. Old devil moon starts off interesting by having this disney like sound to it in the verses but the chorus just is the same as the rest of the album. Again, the start of pennies from heaven is cool but the rest of the song is just okay. “Radio, telephone and movies may go”well , no but love is here to say is one of the better songs so far so that’s good ( still samey though). I’ve got you under my skin starts side 2 and well the side 2 tracks 1 is a banger rule doesn’t apply here ( but I guess album’s weren’t as important then). I thought about you is alright, listenable but not special. We’ll be together again is alright it’s about twice the length of the average song on the album so it does sound greater by this. Making whoopee is probably the best song as at least there is some good storytelling here! Swinging down the lane is a bit of a drop from the heights of the last two but it’s still decent. Anything goes is good I like how the orchestral bits just build up bit by bit and him saying “ may I say before this record spins to a close” is a neat line for this being the penultimate track. The album closes with how about you? It’s a bit of a downer ending hearing how much better side 2 of this album is. Just listening it would be a 2 but-1 for that he didn’t write any of the songs then +2 for that without it the 50’s would be a very lacking decade and that I don’t know jazz music enough to know if this is great stuff. So 3/5!
Not something I would normally search for or listen to but it was quite enjoyable. Can’t deny he had a great voice although most of the tracks seem to just roll into one and because of this there is not too much range and just seems to showcase him as a one trick pony. An easy listen though
It's quite a nice mellow listen with some jolly orchestral arrangements if you're in the right mood. Sinatra's vocal is fairly smooth, as you'd expect, throughout. I do think Sinatra is a bit overrated mind: he's the most well known of the "crooners", however Sammy Davis Jnr, Dean Martin and Perry Como all had a bit more nonchalance swing in their vocal style, a bit of oomph, whereas Sinatra often sounds a bit forced. Also, this sort of music is probably best enjoyed on various artist compilations.
I do like a good old big band swing tune. Majority of the tracks sound the same, with a few classics woven in. 2.5
Gutes Album für Hintergrundmusik, nichts allzu spannendes.
Frank Sinatra is very international but his music isn't the kind of music I like. Some songs of him still I hear, it's all.
Same note throughout the whole album for me. They all sound like a classic but I would rather listen to his holiday music than this
6/30/2022 - ALBUM #154 Today's Album: "Songs For Swingin' Lovers!" by Frank Sinatra - Everyone knows who Frank Sinatra is. He pretty much invented the singer-songwriter genre and pioneered the showtune genre. All of these songs are rather beautiful love songs led by Sinatra's incredible and beautiful voice. I think in terms of how well this music stands up today, I think many of the tunes feel intrinsically dated due to just how many musicals have used this style of big band horns and swelling string sections. I don't think this is a big enough reason to completely write off the tracks or anything, but may of them just sort of drift into the background as none of the musical flourishes really surprise me as much as I imagine they would if I had never heard a showtune before. In terms of the actual sound of the record, I think it's pretty good for it's time period. Many of the horns come through very clearly and Sinatra's voice sounds pretty crystal clear. The lyrics aren't terribly substantive, mostly being simple love songs, but given the title is Songs for Swingin' Lovers, it's hard to say it doesn't give what you come for. I like whenever the music gives way for the flutes or bells to come through in the mix because they are particularly beautiful, but overall the whole production is very elegant and whimsical. There's obviously more effort given to some tracks more than others and it makes the project feel like it could have done without a solid handful of it's songs, given how much they feel like boring filler and really make the track list a bit of a slog, but the times where it sounds good make it worth an entire listen if you just want to throw it on in the background for a little while. There isn't much else to say about this album really. Everyone knows what a decent Sinatra song sounds like and you can imagine what an album of love songs by him would sound like. Overall, this is an incredibly influential and important record that has aged fairly well, despite my own disliking of some of the now-clichés of this genre. Give this one a listen if you like Sinatra or aren't too into / sick of show tunes and want a good crop of tracks. Highlights: You Make Me Feel So Young, You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me, Too Marvelous For Love, I've Got You Under My Skin, Score: 6.5/10 Love songs by the most admired artist of the time.
As smooth and cheesy as a giant wheel of camembert.
Soundtrack to my retro New York romcom
Frank Sinatra sounds great as ever, but I find it quite hard to engage with on more than a surface level.
Old, better than I expected Still a Sinatra hater
10th album huh. Peak Sinatra? who knows. Fave: Making Whoopee
I felt a little targeted by "How About You?" Minus one star for "Makin' Whoopee."
I feel like the title of this album didn't age well. I also feel like Frank was probably an even bigger asshole/womanizer/alcoholic/mafia pawn that we'll ever realize. But, the dude can croon. He's probably the best at it. I'll rate this album higher than I want to because he certainly made his mark, and because - Sinatra aside - his band kicks ass.
50’er swing, kærlighed, dramatisk
Identifying Sinatra albums : It’s a Sinatra album !
Sweet and pleasant to listen to. Had heard many of these songs in all kinds of places, so it was interesting to hear that there were all a part of a singular project.
I like Frank Sinatra, and this is a very happy swing album, which could even be a great introduction to the Great American Songbook. Alas, I much prefer Sinatra's melancholic side from "In the wee small hours". Still 3/5
It`s jubilant, it`s celebratory, it`s for swingin` lovers, by George! This album is a reason why Sinatra is a household name, his crooning and instrumentation together are indulgent as double chocolate cake. This exuberance explains why not one but two of the songs on this album (or iterations thereof) are on the Elf movie soundtrack. It does get repetitive, but this is pleasing music.
Album full of classic Sinatra tracks, what's not to like here. Favourite track: I've Got You Under My Skin
I only saved How About You but for the most part I found this album very relaxing and enjoyable. Everything Goes really is annoying. But it’s a little funny that this song was written in the 1950s but people say the same things today but referring to the 1950s as the ‘good’ or ‘moral’ era.
Not my favorite songs of Sinatra. Feels like the hokiest of music he does. Sure there's some classics on here and I will always enjoy some Sinatra, but I much prefer his more ballady style than the pure cheese that this album reads as.
Crooning
Swingin easy with Frank.
A crooner. Good music for a Saturday morning.
You Make Me feel So Young, I’ve Got You Under My Skin, Pennies From Heaven all standout in this big band version of Frank. I’m struck by how lite this collection is. I’m assuming Frank could put out anything and people would eat it up.
3,5; very classy smooth album, beautiful voice of Mr. Sinatra, pleasant melodies, great experience
A lot of really charming and endearing songs here. An album centered on singing sweet nothings to your love over loungy vocal jazz arrangements. As pleasant as that is, this album does feel like its stuck in the one place for its entire runtime and the sweetness gets a bit sickly by the end.
Sopi perjantain tunnelmaan ja onhan ukolla todella karismaattinen ääni (vähän kuin omaa laulua kuuntelis).
Kyllä The Voice vaan tänäkin päivänä toimii!
Pretty fun. Some lyrics sound a little strange but it’s just because the album was released in the 50s. Only complaint is that there is not much variation for the 15 tracks. 6/10
It's exactly what you would expect. The Standard of the genre.
Don't usually go for crooners, but the album was pretty good. Like the rendition of Anything Goes.
Its Frank, its good.
A little old timey for my taste but I enjoyed some of the songs.
Fairly standard standards. Many of the tracks feel like they plod along and have been phoned in by Ol Blue Eyes. Only 4 strong tracks on the album - but boy have they stood the test of time.
I liked whoopie and anything goes, both classics. Nice and pleasant :)
I found this album a bit samey, even if I did enjoy a lot of the songs. How much love does this guy have for all these women!?
Great voice. Songs kinda blend together. 6/10
classic! You Make Me Feel So Young It Happened in Monterey Makin' Whoopee I've Got You Under My Skin
all finey fine, and good for what it is good for
It's good stuff but listening to an entire Sinatra album is a bit boring. Also, "Making Whoopee" is an awful expression.
There's a time and a place, but Sinatra is important.
Exactly what the title says - bunch of frank crooning songs about love.
Old two-eyes himself. Some of these songs really swing. Not my thing, but I can appreciate it. 3 stars.
7/10
Good light hearted Music for the background. Not very exciting either way.
There are several songs on this album that I've heard before, but I've never listened to a whole album from Sinatra. I'm not a fan of Sinatra, but I don't actively seek to avoid his music either. The music is okay. I can't imagine that I would play this album or individual tracks again.
Good albums, only rating 3 starts based on the fact that this is music I already know. Trying to use this for new music
Swinging, mid energy with traditionally romantic lyricism. Not much variety or energy though
Its a great sound, probably universally enjoyed, but after a few songs loses it’s value. The lyrics are all the same, dated and difficult to listen to in 2021, and the tempo the exact same on each song. At a time when the 60s songwriters were changing music, a cover album of songs pales in comparison.
Easy listening however the very repetitive style of all the songs got old quick
Good swingin’ , would defo put this on if I had an SO over and I felt like dancing a little. Don’t feel like the entire album is really that consistent however and jt kinda gets stale
Fantastically replayable, and of course pleasant sounds. Unfortunately not otherwise striking in my opinion.
Definitely would describe this as swinging 3.3
Makes you want to put on a zoot suit and swing, baby. Pretty repetitive style. Nothing wrong with it, just wouldn't seek it out again. Songs that caught my ear: Old Devil Moon, Love is Here to Stay, Anything Goes.
Great voice, but every song sounds the same
Swung into a good album
It's fine. I can't really get excited about Frank Sinatra, but it has a time and a place.
Very good. Starts noisy but it mellows down. Classic easy listening. 3/5
Ol‘ Blue Eyes. Einer der größten Sänger. Auf einer rundweg mittelmäßigen Platte. I’ve Got You Under My Skin hatte ich irgendwie besser in Erinnerung.
Soft 3 stars. I mean his voice is great, and this music has a place during a date night or in my grandmothers dreams, but the songs just don’t interest me that much.
I thought Greatest Hits albums weren't part of the deal for this collection of albums? That is what this kind of is, isn't it? Don't get me wrong, it's great music, and I enjoyed it.
A few recognizable classics. Made feel like I should be having dinner with my Grandma.
All the rat pack stuff starts to sound the same. Great sound, just little variety. Not my favorite Sinatra album.
Tiene un par de hits: "You make me feel so young" y "I've got you under my skin" temazos. No conocía pero me gusto: "You're getting to be a habit with me"
This album would be fine as background music, but there isn’t anything ground breaking here. I did learn that Sinatra was 13.5 lb at birth! 13.5 lb and no c-section!!! He was an only child…I wonder why. They had to use forceps to get him out, which left permanent scars on his neck and eardrum damage. I’d say God bless his mother, but unfortunately she physically abused him as a youngster. Was it pay back for his uncomfortable world entrance?
As 'swingin' Sinatra goes, versus 'moody' Sinatra (which I prefer), this record is fine, but it also highlights the fact that the various collections of his songs are better curated than the albums
Knows what it does and does it well, a fun album. Can't help but feel like I'm listening to the same song over and over, though - concept makes sense but it gets repetitive. Some of the charm from being old music wears off, too ("makin whoopee") ???? dog Saved: You Make Me Feel So Young, Pennies From Heaven*
Saved Prior: You Make Me Feel So Young, I've Got You Under My Skin Off Rip: It Happened In Monterey, You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me, Love Is Here To Stay Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Ol' Frankie does it like nobody else. He's by far my favorite singer from the era (no racist). He just puts me in a different state of mind. With regards to this album, it mostly hits the same beats over and over. 3.5 that I'll round down to a 3. The big two hits from this album are can't miss all-timers though.
Frank Sinatra is a great crooner. Few great love songs on this album, other were just good.
Not bad, not my tempo. Would use as elevator music.
ok
I mean, it's Frank Sinatra. It does what it says on the tin. There's crooning, big band blasts, and hip cat lingo.
Confession: I do not like Sinatra’s voice. The sliding into every note thing. Other than that, this is basically bubblegum pop. I actually like it; that’s not a dig. Unless you’re the kind of person for whom all music has to be super serious, in which case I don’t think that this is it, just ‘cause it’s old. Fun, but that’s it. Favourite track: “Old Devil Moon”
It was fine. Not the biggest Sinatra fan but nothing wrong with it.
Obviously enjoyable tunes but let's be honest, he's just the voice. Most if not all of these aren't original songs. Knocking some stars as a result.
No lo escuché
Quite nice and pleasant to listen to
3.5/5 nice ones, i'll have to relisten
As smooth as a snake wearing a condom as a coat.
No jälleen meni kivasti näin taustamusiikkina, mutta eipä nyt suurempia tunteita herätä. Levyn loppumisen huomasi vasta kun joku aivan toinen artisti pääsi ääneen.
A quick album and exactly what you'd expect. 2RS
Classic Frank. Just need to learn how to swing dance.
Impresionante calidad. Canciones bonitas y voz de lujo. Me han gustado especialmente "You make me feel so young" y "I've got you under my skin".
Interesting classics
Takes me back to playing guitar in jazz band during high school. Some real classics on here as well!
It was enjoyable to listen to, just kind of long and not enough variance from one song to the next.
I’ve never liked most of Frank Sinatra’s songs.
Classic
Ok for old stuff
Not really my thing but still enjoyable
Well it’s Frank Sinatra. What else can you say? He’s no Miss Kittin, unfortunately.
Listen to the whole thing in one sitting, didn't realise how painfully similar all the songs are. That being said, he's got such a smooth soothing voice it was a fun listen. Relaxing. More good music to have on while you're cookin' by the book.
It's fine.
Pleasant, but most of the songs sounded the same so they all merge into one another. Our favourite song was Makin' Whopee as the lyrics are quite funny.
A classic. Not actually listened to an album of Frank. Let's see how it goes. What's not to like? It's Frank doing his swinging thing.
Probably one of the oldest records on this list. Yes, it is remastered, but even with that, it sounds ahead of its time of 1956. At the same time.. from beginning to end of this record, it transports you to a different time and place that most music can not do.
Frankie Sinatra needs to stop peepin' on the swingin' lovers. It was a really classy album - I found myself comparing it a lot to the Ella Fitzgerald's album that we've previously encountered. I think Ella has better songs, but Blue Eyes is ridiculously good too. "You Make Me Feel So Young" & "Love Is Here To Stay" were my favs. "Making Whoopee" was fucking stupid though, I can't describe how lame it felt to me, especially compared to the really classy tracks.
Not my favorite kind of music, but appreciate some Sinatra!
I've got you under my skin of Anything goes.
His smooth vocals are always good background music. Not much more than that though.
might start a nuclear war later... idk
None in here are my favourites of this genre, but still nice for listening. And if it's any time of the year for this one, this is it (autumn, nearing the holidays).
Enjoyable!
Never really listened to Sinatra before and while it’s not really for me I get the appeal. Great background music regardless
Sorry to say it, but I feel like a lot of people just have the old = good mindset. This, at least to me, is nothing I would put on. This is just hotel lobby music.
Whatever -
soldier boy
Maybe it’s just been around too much for too long but this was repetitive to the point of boredom.
idk why this album art is so funny to me. its like he's the ghost of young love looking down on the happy couple. there's lots of songs to like in here but the whole album was too much frank for me. i like frank on kkjz on sundays broken up with stories and weird bsides. i liked frank when he came up in my grandpa's oldsmobile's radio. hut for me this is too much frank for one sitting. i also noticed that a lot of standards i like, pennies from heaven and how about you especially, i just really didnt go for this version. liked his anything goes tho. fave track old devil moon
2.5/5
2.4 2x it's actually decent just seems so old timey
Frank lad
medium talent
It is rather remarkable that Frank Sinatra make a career where every single song sounds the exact same
Hard to believe this was less than 10 years before the rolling stones. Boring
Maybe it needs to grow on me. Let's voice personality carry, honestly gets boring.
This record probably holds the most amount of Sinatra that any one person would ever need. Glad to have the chance to listen to it and it's not terrible (great voice obviously) but its very Sinatra and it all really sounds the same doesn't it?
I have never been a fan of crooners. Sure Frank Sinatra can sing if you like that style of music. The music is good and songs are good it’s just basic crooning. A basic dude singing basic tunes. Sure people like it but doesn’t mean I needed to hear it.
The best music for me is the music that brings you into its world, the kinds of albums that you could live inside. This one does that: it evokes a Manhattan that probably in reality never existed apart from the movies, a New York of art deco skyscrapers, booths in steakhouses with cocktails and finely tailored suits, autumnal walks down rainy avenues or among the fallen leaves in Central Park. It's all mythological, but a lot of music is. It's smooth, it feels effortless in the way that can only happen at the highest levels of competence; I appreciate the importance of Sinatra to American musical culture, maybe even a particular aspect of American identity. I don't especially enjoy listening to it though other than as background music.
This was so boring that it was hard to get through. I lan listen to one or two swing songs but a whole album for sure is too much.
It all sounds so samey...
This guys understanding of geology is schist.
all the songs sound the same
I'm really not a Sinatra fan and this record did nothing to change my mind. My feelings listening to this alternated between 😴 and 🤢
5/6/26. I'm not the biggest Frank Sinatra person. Great voice and classic sound, but not my cup of tea. The songs are very predictable although the big band elements are cool.
The album started strong and i resonated with some of the songs but it just got slower towards the end i cant find myself listening to it again except the habit one and anything goes
Not really into this sinatra album, was really out of it when i was in the first song.
Well it’s all competently written and very well performed but good god is it boring. At 45 minutes it’s not really that long but the 15 supposedly different songs blend together in a way that makes it feel much longer. Sinatra obviously has a legendary voice but the whole thing is so corny and saccharine that I just can’t enjoy it as anything other than background music.
It is to funky for me and not my type of taste for music
Boring
I just listened to Frank Sinatra's album called "In The Wee Small Hours" a little over a week ago as part of this project. I ended up liking 6 songs on that one. I currently have 12 total songs liked by Frank, with one song from this album "I've Got You Under My Skin". I've never listened to this whole album though - I just liked that one because I'm familiar with it from somewhere - probably from a movie or TV show or something. So, I'm excited to dive in and see if I can add any more Sinatra songs to my library on Spotify. After listening 3 times ... I ended up liking 5 new to me songs - "You Make Me Feel So Young", "You're Getting to be a Habit With Me", "Too Marvelous For Me", "Love Is Here To Stay", "Making Whoopee" - in addition the one I already have. Funny - in "You're Getting to be a Habit With Me" the metaphor of a girlfriend as a drug was even being used back in Sinatra days - and of course this metaphor is used widely in rock music. "Making Whoopee" - takes a pretty drastic turn as the song goes on - from happy marriage to divorce court in 3 minutes. Liked songs on Spotify: 6/15 Rating: 2/5
Frank Sinatra’s Songs for Swingin' Lovers! is a collection of romantic standards where the vocals are the undisputed centerpiece, supported by a cheeky lyrical wit that still charms. While the opening track, "You Make Me Feel So Young," is a standout, the true highlight is "I’ve Got You Under My Skin," which features a brilliant, driving build-up toward a grand finale. However, the early-to-mid section of the record feels undeniably dated, relying on a mid-century formula that can come across as "bland" or "non-offensive." Despite its groovy, consistent basslines, the album often feels like high-end background noise—perfect for a boutique coffee shop, but perhaps too safe for a deep listen. It’s an easy, sophisticated listen, but it lacks the edge needed to be truly gripping.
Do not really like that sound. But I really wanna like it in the future
Eh, feels quaint and a little too safe for me
This 2* rating is a testament to how everlasting Sinatra is. The music itself is good, but Sinatra is such a universal figure at least in American music that this album is kind of just what you’d expect. Terrific, but it isn’t anything particularly special because it is just Sinatra and everyone knows Sinatra
Sounds like the music played in a film scene where they go back in time. Not bad but a bit boring and just nothing special
I understand the significance of this album and Sinatra in general, but that doesn’t mean I like it. Anything Goes was my favorite song on the album.
Songs For Emotionally Repressed 90’s Football Managers!
It's ok
sure this was lovely back in the day…. but not my thing
Never been a fan of Sinatra, though I can respect his music. The one thing I noticed in this listen is I think his older voice has a lot more character to it than his young voice. Still wouldn't listen to either by choice, though.
Oh Ole Blue Eyes ... you sound so dated.
Eh rat pack fan of their hits not their albums
OMG - that title has a different meaning these days! The whole big band thing is an era that does nothing for me, but I do recall watching the seniors grooving to this when I was a kid Of the couple of songs which stand out, the only time this would be okay is in a movie soundtrack
a pleasant album but nothing id write home about personally. i like sinatra but usually i curate his songs to a few of his best when i get an itch to listen to him. the music is really good and he sounds great, but theres nothing of substance to it, is there?
I don't really like this kind of music in general, so It's hard to rate this. I'll say for me it's 2 stars.
Me gusto.. tranqui y diferente. La segunda parte del album es mejor. Canciones para playlist: 4/15
Recognizing that this was hep, at the time, this does not appeal to me. The crooner style is too clear. It's not dirty enough. The bubblegum lyrics are quaint, sexist and sappy. The big band backing is good. But the vocals seem meant to be the focus, so the instrumentation does not outshine it. Too bad.
Great voice but all the songs sound exactly the same.
Frank Sinatra existed to soundtrack movies set in New York. I'm not really interested in listening to jazz crooners outside of that context.
Not really a fan of the crooner style unfortunately, I wouldn’t mind having this to put on in the background on a chill morning or something though
Love the sound and the strong Vocals Sinatra always has but just doesn’t do anything for me
Am I a bad person with a bad music taste if I admit that this bored me? Obviously Frankie’s a legend but this body of work did not do it for me
Every song sound the same, no exaggeration. Its the same beat and tune for 45 minutes
If only a guy with a nice voice was enough for me to enjoy an album. Unfortunately, it’s not. Vocal jazz might be the most consistently uninteresting genre for me. It’s focuses way too much on vocals, and for a person like me who’s mostly interested in the instrumentation, it’s not fun at all. They always sound like the same song. Super repetitive and unimaginative. To be fair, this album is far from the worst example. The instruments here are actually quite decent by vocal jazz standards, but I still can’t say they’re good. Also, every songs here is love-related. There’s absolutely zero variety, which drags this album even further down. 5/10
I'm not a fan of crooner music. He could sing well and technically the songs are fine but they just don't do it for me.
Enjoyed this album. All crooner tunes are the best.
Early recording industry thrived on serving the most of the same, and here’s a whole lotta Frank.
this is fun and just used it as background music tbh
I didn't spend my 20s off my tits at every festival in the country, forgetting my name in psycare, getting piledrived in a hundred mosh pits, cradling box wine in a field in wiltshire, texting damon albarn that I love him, learning how to DJ, realising I'm shit at DJing, losing my clothes to a dance battle, losing my shoes in a mud pit, losing my tent in a storm, losing my mind every August, throwing shapes at chemical brothers, underworld, orbital, groove armada, the prodigy, utah saints, the orb and I think basement jaxx at some point just to end up liking frank fucking sinatra. No thank u, not now not yet.
After knowing what Sinatra could do on In the Wee Smalls Hours, these happy go lucky kind of albums just don't do it for me.
It's a bit repetitive, all songs sound kinda the same, but the quality of the musicians is tope de gama, and of course the voice on this fucker is amazing
Absolutely legendary, but I can't imagine ever voluntarily listening to Sinatra.
The first time I tried to listen to the records in this book, it was 2016 (wtfff 10 years ago...) and I was going in chronological order. In the Wee Small Hours really hit, but when I got to this I think I quit there because it felt so stupid to have a repeat artist so soon. Imagine if I called it quits every time that happened.
Unless it's December, and he's singing Christmas Carols... He better only be singing Fly Me To The Moon or My Way.
Nothing more than music to put on the background while cooking a nice pasta dinner for a woman. Will keep for future reference, but not something I would add to my collection.
ehh
and churchill has declared victory over europe
Sinatra is cool and all but I can’t help but think that if you’ve heard one Sinatra song you’ve heard them all
I just can’t find access to peoples love of Sinatra. Maybe down the road… how I now appreciate neil diamond
idk buns
Big band sound not to my taste. Great delivery on the vocal, but it becomes a bit samey after a few songs. I knew about half of the songs before listening so they are very familiar. Just not something I would go back and listen to again.
