Reviews (page 4 of 7)

some fun some too dissonant on the old ears

Cool blend of latin electronic.

Sounds like 90's trip hop. Like the vocals. Distracted by what's going on in the background.

First half is pleasant but boring, the second has more of a pulse.

The Brazilian aspect was all that saved this from being just another crap electronica album.

This was fun, but I don't agree that this is rock alternative?

It's good, but how about some Baile Funk too?

spooky latin beats. not much else. weird distortion and sound effects are fun but relied on too heavy. I liked Segredo, and overall the vibe was just okay.

Normally this is right up my alley but this one didn’t really do it for me. Oh well they can’t all be winners

Great Latin jazz, lovely feel throughout with great energy

Great album ( veru good beats ) Segredo Antropofagos Samba de gringo paulista

nice but a bit whats the point

Serviceable Bossa Nova Cafe Jazz.

Was that Wikipedia intro written by AI, what the fuck kind of editorializing are we doing about São Paulo. Anyway, this is interesting on paper, boring in practice.

Really nice music with a lot of interesting mixing going on. I think I would have liked it more without the singing though.

kind of a cool movie soundtrack type of album but not much more than that

Actually enjoyed this. Weird mix of genres, all infused with beats that didn't annoy the shit out of me and a healthy dose of "what the fuck is this?".

nice but a bit dull

3/5. Sticky and hot, this album really exudes sitting outside, late at night, you shirt stuck to your back, as you sit alone or with a couple buddies underneath the only street lamp for several blocks. The enjoyment though is in the experience, rather than the music. The music is in the space with us but it's not the center focus. This can be good and bad, and as I am just in my home listening to this in my A/C, it's to its detriment. I did enjoy it for the most part but it's not something I would consider great music, perfect background music though. Best Song: Você Gosta, Antropófagos, Abraço (They all kind of flowed together though)

I enjoyed the album. It's very different. Got a little tired of the discordant pieces, but overall interesting. Glad I listened but doubt I'll listen again.

Kinda bland, kinda cool? I'll give it one extra star, but just because I loved Samba do Gringo Paulista.

This is another 3.5 for me. It's good, but it's nothing that feels very special. It feels like a trip-hop and R&B album with latin influences. So, while I do like it, I don't think it is something that really belongs on a list of "required" listening.

Its exactly what it looks like.

Not bad, has some good songs, but mostly forgettable, might give it another listen someday

A little ambient kinda soft rock. It was fine but no songs really hit me. A couple were actually annoying.

Pleasant.

I was highly aware of everything I was doing when I was listening to this album. This is the background music for a very very restless person. Made me paranoid.

Not all has to blow you away to be good. This is useful as lounge or background music. It helped me sleep so that's an extra star.

First listen

It's like ambient electronic music with a Brazilian flavor mixed in. It's OK in the background but it didn't grab me.

You know the drink list at the cocktail lounge that plays this album features a lot of rum and tequila, and probably includes the word "small batch" more than once. But, they also probably play this album a little too loud to make easy conversation with your friends.

Pleasant to the ear but very middle of the road 3

It's exciting to see a person from your own country making it to this list of albums. Suba was a pioneer of electronic music in Serbia (former Yugoslavia back then) and apparently became a major producer in Brazil where he made this swan song of an album (what really could be just the beginning of a great streak). This is not the kind of music I usually listen to but I feel I will be giving it a few more spins. I like the blend of Brazilian music and electronic sounds but what struck me the most were some of the ending tracks that had more of a trippy psychedelic feel to them

A Brazilian album with very late 90's electronic influences

kind of lounge or bar music

I really liked this. Super vibey and chill, felt like it was the kind of album I’d hear playing in a small plates natural wine bar. No songs super stood out but very pleasant background music. Definitely a 3.5 album.

For the most part this was coffee shop music to me. Some interesting sounds throughout, but nothing stood out to me in any way in particular.

Good background work music

Samba do Gringo Paulista. Felicidade.

A Brazilian flavoured electronic album was not something I asked for. But interesting (and easy) listen in the end. Nice background music (not in a bad way). Suba is also an interesting fella. Leaving Serbia for Brazil with a UNESCO scholarship, embracing the culture and art, and then unfortunately dying in a fire in Sao Paolo just after this was released. He left behind a nice tribute to Brazil and electronic music. High 3*

okay but not for me

Not sure if this is my favourite type of music but it worked well on in the background while I was working. Kind of a late night coffee house vibe. I imagine low lights, lots of orange and reds and chatter as the music plays.

Very atmospheric, but does get a bit bland

Not my usual genre and not something I’d usually listen to out of choice. However, it does capture the essence of São Paulo really well and you can imagine being there and listening to the music in the bars. The musicianship is also intriguing and well executed. Very interesting.

6,5/10 Highlights: Voce Gosta Antropofagos

I probably would have dug this when it came out. Not sure I’ll listen again now though. The artist certainly seems to have an interesting and tragic story though.

solid 3.5 hrs fun to listen to

Though I do respect this type of music not really a fan.

Smooth

Day495 - the music and vocals were good and i had a good time trying to translate

Fine for once

Alright vibe lounge music. Nothing bad to say, nothing stand out. Doesn't help I followed up with a different band of same style that I know much better

5/10 Nice album, very middle of the road. It was something different which I appreciate. The Brazilian sound was smooth, but this album felt more like background music than anything else. Favorite Track: Samba do Gringo Paulista

4/24/2025: pretty cool

Another slightly strange inclusion in my view. Turn of the millennium acid jazz samba fusion. Not terrible, and interesting to see a release like this getting the spotlight, but a lot of the sounds haven't aged great, sound just a bit tacky. 2.8/5

Another album that was okay but not great. Pretty boring but the Latin flair did make it somewhat more interesting to me. Became background music very quickly, 2.75/5

Generally cool background music. Definitely liked the Brazilian rhythms (the drums are very cool throughout). Tragic story about how he died shortly after. This was a good listen - I'd call it a 3.5, but I doubt I would seek it out again which makes it a 3. Favorite tracks: Antropófagos (Cannibals), Samba Do Gringo Paulista (Paulista Gringo's Samba or, as I like to call it, if King Crimson did samba!), Abraço (Embrace), A Noite Sem Fim (The Endless Night).

I really liked the first track - it’s moody and evocative, and made me hopeful for the rest of the album. Disappointingly, it felt like a steady slide downward from there, and while it’s pleasant enough throughout, the uninspiring electronica overtakes the interesting elements. Favorite: Tantos Desejos

Brazilian rhythms and vibes filtered through a Serbian DJ's subdued psyche. Not particularly exciting but certainly interesting. Would love to have this on during a house party. Second half is way stronger than the first

Nice vibe, very chill. I like that it’s different from a lot of other stuff.

I don't have a lot of notes on this... Give this a shot along with say, Serge Gainsbourg, if you're a boring white dude living in the suburbs and you want to feel culturally expansive.

I like almost everything Brazilian.

kind of kept forgetting i was listening to this but when i would tune back in i was certainly not unhappy

nice chill music. doesn’t do anything crazy though and very much fades in the background lol

I can understand it being on this list. A good fusion of electronic, ambient and Latin Music. Better than the Latin jazz, but still not something for me

Fun and vibey

Nice but probably not something I’ll revisit. The music supervisor for Grey’s Anatomy probably would have gone bananas over this record

I’ll keep it in mind as background dinner party music. But honestly our favorite song turned out to be a Spotify ad.

Sexy muzak

Pleasantly surprised

I liked it, burial but Brazilian and a bit more 90s piano bar

Pretty cool stuff, like the Sepultura album with all the metal stripped out.

So chill and boring

Way more electronic than I would have expected based on the first song, but I enjoyed it, especially as a backing track while music. I liked it more than a lot of American or British elecgronica from the 90s. It's a little happier sounding (thanks Felicidade). There are cool sounds, but by the end, I couldn't remember any of them specifically. So enjoyable, but not particularly memorable.

Good. But in Spanish?

Mar10 HL: "Samba do Gringo Paulista", "Antropofagos", "Felicidade" 3.5 Cool, atmospheric blend of trad Brazilian music and cold downtempo. Compared to yesterday's artist, also an outsider (Frank Sinatra) doing bossanova, Suba is much more creative about co-opting that sound

Pretty good. South American music with electronic touches. Not sure that this is essential listening, but it passes the time pleasantly enough.

Antropofagos was a fun dancey track, as was abraço. My brain gets rather confused listening to Portuguese because I’m trying so hard to understand what is being said. A pretty good world music album

Can’t believe this amount of soul came from a Slav. It’s quite nice and very danceable, even if Latin and acid jazz aren’t my favorite sub genres.

Some decent background music with some cool ideas but nothing too special. 3 stars

This fine, I did not mind listening to this. It is forgettable, and I have not motivation to listen again, however.

I usually try to find an aspect of records that are outside of my usual listening to focus on. I just couldn’t with this one. Not sure why. Wasn’t a bad record just didn’t do anything for me.

A Serbian with a background in electronic and new wave music travels to Sao Paulo on a research grant to study the rich rhythms of samba and bossa nova. The result is a dark and atmospheric acid jazz that utilizes many Afro-Brazilian grooves for its foundation. While cool, the album can feel a bit aimless at times. Combined with the 60-minute runtime, São Paulo Confessions rarely justifies its runtime by lacking any big statements. Nice background music though.

Not bad, but kind of faded into the background. Probably worth a re-listen at some point. 2.5/5

This album was mostly not that interesting for me, but it wasnt bad. That being said, I really like the last song. It has this like chromatic aspect that I really dug. That bumps it up a bit for me. Nice save right at the end. 3/5

What can I say? Like several of these albums, I am glad I listened to it. But I would never buy it. I may have to reconsider my rankings.

Chilled, relaxing electronica. It’s pleasant but nothing out of this world. I listened to it last night while watching the starlings’ murmurations off Brighton Pier and it was a lovely experience but I can’t see me returning to the album very often.

good background music but still background music - 2.5 rounded up

Not bad. Hit some sweet spots. Definite lulls though as well. Decent chill out music. May have to be in the right mood to listen to it.

This was enjoyable relaxing ambient stuff. I liked it.

electronic bossa nova? okay sure! nice sound overall, good background music but nothing really stood out to me, which is why i don't have listening notes or favorite tracks for this album. but it's alright for some chill background music- i like the reviews that called this 90s wine bar music lol

mitigated opinion here, the vibe is nice but its hard to really find a mood to listen to this. I'll be happy to revisit it though

I mean, it's at least something unique! Here we have a latin-electronic fusion album from an artist who was born in Serbia, produced in Brazil, and died in a fire the same month as this album's release. Huh. Anyways, São Paulo Confessions is a good album. It's not exactly my thing, but I certainly have respect for it. The style is interesting, but not bad! It's mostly electronic, but it has enough taken from other styles to make it not boring! The singing from other artists is nice. I'm not sure what they're saying, but Wikipedia says that the album is Suba's "musical account of life in that humid, foggy, and manic megalopolis." which means something, I guess. There are reasons as to why I'm not huge on this album. Some parts aren't as enjoyable for me, with the album ending on kind of a weird note. It's also a pretty long album, with some songs feeling a bit too long. However, I'd still say that listening to São Paulo Confessions was a mostly positive experience. Light 3/5.

Music to listen to when your head is bumped up against a window in car at night and you can't go to sleep. Someone described it as mid 90s wine bar music and frankly, not sure why anyone has to write another review, but it does get a little more interesting in the middle. Not sure I had to listen to this before I died.

Didn't understand it but it was vibey

A moody, groovy album. I especially like the bossa nova mixed with electronic elements. Nothing that really stands out but an interesting listen nonetheless.

Not really my thing, but if I ever need some classy lounge music, this will be my first port of call.

Spanish trip hop. I can dig it.

A bit jangly for me

Was grooving in the kitchen cooking with this

Nice to have an album that is entirely new to me. Big fan of Segreda. The whole album a bit trip-hoppy, v dark and sexy. Each song slides seamlessly into the next. Best enjoyed at maximum volume. 3.5

This would be a great soundtrack for an indie film based in South America - looking at you "Queer". Glad to have found something new to listen to. Highlight for me was "A Noite Sem Fim", gave techno-soul-samba vibes. 3.5

One of the first of its kind and it's a bit unfair towards this album that you tend to judge it by all that muzak that replicated its formula and was played ad nauseum in wine and beach bars in the late 90s and early 2000s. So it sounds a bit clichéd now, but it was a major blueprint for that cliché. How do I rate this, though?

Fine. But ?

And OK sound I can chill with, and it works well in the background since I can't understand the lyrics.

Decent album, experimental sounds in some places 3/5

An interesting album to say the least. Experimental for sure. Lots of weird sound bites and edm sounds mixed in with some light vocals and percussions. It's probably not going to break into my regular rotation but it was enjoyable enough.

Not a bad listen.

Very chill but wouldn't ever choose this music, but not a bad listen. 3/5

There were parts of this that felt like an interesting twist on this genre of music. However mostly I was left feeling that this was quite dated. I don't know if that's just a function of electronic music being quite fast paced and this list being older, or whether the stuff they chose is just not that great. Overall mixed feelings shakes out at a 3

pretty cool! just kind of standard techno with some brazilian elements in there but never a tiring listen

Not quite as compelling as some of the other fusion trip hop we’ve had. Still an easy listen though. It’d be a 3.5 if fractions were allowed. Sad story about the artist though.

Tragic story of this guy - dedicated to the music mother fucker. Anyway this is nice, keeps it interesting while remaining mellow, although some try to say it matches the freneticism of its namesake city, it does not feel frenetic.

sexy vocals over late night tracks

More background restaurant music. Didn’t feel like anything more than that.

Probably worth another listen, but as it stands, this ended up being exactly what I thought it was going to be, and I don’t think I like that very much. An hour plus of bleeps and bloops and loops with some Samba influence, which would be fine if there was anything to hook me in.

Serbian-Brazilian samba jazz. It's obviously one for the hipsters, and I enjoyed it, but it left me with a feeling that I should have enjoyed it more, if only I wasn't so stupid. That's not a nice feeling.

Own style. Real proposition.

Fine, a bit old

Very smooth jazzy electronic music.

This wasn't bad but didn't really catch my interest.

Have we had another from Suba? The name is familiar, but I'm not sure. Anyway, it's Brazilian music, but more contemporary than traditional, with some funky grooves and sounds throughout. I enjoyed it! Favorite tracks: Voce Gosta, Sereia, A Noite Sem Fim. Album art: Can barely see it, but seems to be a guy walking across a dark street at night. Nothing special really. 3.5/5

Very mellow en chill

Decent background music. But a must listen album? Not so sure.

I enjoyed this but didn't love it. It's good, it's incredibly atmospheric, it just isn't particularly interesting. It's definitely something that I would put on in the background at a party or maybe a coffee shop, but I wouldn't really "listen" to it. Favorite track: "Felicidade"

I was surprised at how much I liked this. When I first heard the bossa nova mixed with electronica I was ready to hate it, but it's actually pretty well done. It's a little long and gets a bit repetitive, but it makes for nice relaxing background music. Not sure if it belongs on this list, but I guess it's cool to see something from outside of Dimery's British bubble. 3/5 (could be a 3.5 if I'm in the right mood)

I can imagine hearing this in a trendy restaurant in 2001

Solid vibe but ~25 years later it doesn't sound all that remarkable (yet it probably 🤯 in 1999).

Never heard this before. Sad that Suba died within a few days of this, his debut album, being released. The music is fine, but it didn't really resonate.

nice tunes, good background music

Really good, unique electronic music. Not beat heavy stuff, just sort of electric vibes. It's nice and I'm sure I will listen to this again.

Notable tracks: Felicidade, Tantos Desejos, Voce Gosta, Na Neblina, Antropofagos

I discovered Brazilian music through my brother Steve and David Byrne when I was in college and became obsessed. This album was so familiar as a result, I'm not sure if I truly 'liked it so much' or if it was a reminder of my love story with Joao and Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Jobim, Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso (mio AMORE!) Djavan, Gal Costa and Gilberto Gil. It was super pleasant and airy background music while I cleaned up the house yesterday

That was a fun ride. The songs have unique soundscapes and vibes to match. Part beat, part ethereal, part island beach...soothing but energetic.

A little mixed on this one. Definitely of a moment on time. But there are a lot of interesting choices that have aged better than other albums of the era. I think I would revisit though I didn't love it on the first pass.

goofy ahh brasil electronica 7-1 7-1 7-1 7-1 7-1 7-1 7-1 Müller 11', Klose 23', Kroos 24', 26', Khedira 29', Schürrle 69', 79' Müller 11', Klose 23', Kroos 24', 26', Khedira 29', Schürrle 69', 79' Müller 11', Klose 23', Kroos 24', 26', Khedira 29', Schürrle 69', 79' Müller 11', Klose 23', Kroos 24', 26', Khedira 29', Schürrle 69', 79'. goopy ass............... electronica with no subtlelty.... no european finesse... south american rawness... incredible to the ears... exotic..... they live different there... down there... the swamps... the forests... dancing madness... the mad breed.... antropofagos

I was going to curse this as another Balearic coffee table background music nightmare. But it reaches for beauty or weirdness juat often enough that I can't.

This was nice, I can die now.

Meditative Brazilian action

Not my usual jam, but some very solid tunes on this. Pleasantly surprised.

This was really good for my bus ride today and finished just as I got to my stop

I need to listen to this one again when I am in the mood for some serious background mood music.

interesting and pretty out there for 1999. Definitely gives me some jam band vibes but in a weird jazz electronic sense

Pleasant for background music.

Like this is fine, I quite enjoyed listening to it, but I really don't get why its essential listening, what does it do that's "special"

This is a great sound for 2000. It fits into the Will Oldham and Bill Callahan club. I can see how it influences bands like My Morning Jacket. Ultimately, this album reach the heights of those bands. The falsetto is sometimes forced and I find myself thinking they’re doing something they’re not entirely cut out for. But, I love the soulfulness and the genre bending.

Perfectly pleasant retro futuristic jazz hop. But it's background music.

This was a vibe. Will relisten.

I liked it for awhile. Then was sorta over it by the end.

Enjoyed the electronic elements of the album but couldn't connect with the jazz/latin influence as much.

Brazil via Serbia. Atmospheric and lovely, a nice fusion of traditional Brazilian music and rhythms with electronica.

Spotify tried giving me the lyrics to Personal Jesus instead of the lyrics to Felicidade.

An interesting album, not what I'm used to but some interesting songs.

Nice. Mid-90s salsa-chill.

è un saudagi lounge... not bad

I enjoyed this, but ultimately it felt a little long by the end of the album.

groovy, crazy we had sabu like two days ago

Not much about this album online, maybe it’s here because Suba died while recording it. Idk. Not bad to do work to.

fun noises... I guess

6/10 - I thought this artist and the one two albums ago was the same but, its Suba instead of Sabu. Na Neblina and Segredo were pretty good. I listened to the last few songs while doing the workout and it was not the vibe. It was a nice mix of emotions and pretty interesting

This fucked. Maybe it was just great music to listen to while working because it's kinda just nice background noise, but I enjoyed it

Some decent beats but wasn't very interested

some decent 90s trip hop with a latin flavor. Not bad

Did not understand a word yet I felt it. Fun listen

Too long and got a bit repetitive. Overall I liked it and the variation created within a central sound. Wish they could have trimmed a little fat is all.

Drinking wine in an industrial bar. This isn't bad, just not very compelling.

I need more Latin music on this list

Did not listen

Jájá þetta var ágætt. Gott að vinna við þetta.

One of the better electronic albums on this list, but only because there’s some fucking vocals. Otherwise, can be a bit forgettable. 3/5

Interessant, aber hörbar.

Very cool piece of Latin Electronica, mayhaps a bit too long though.

It's actually a bit more than just some tropical bar music. I love the slick glassy beats that reminds me of urban crime movies, though it can get monotonous at some places. Interesting overall.

From track 1, I'm into this. Some nice downtempo / acid-jazz electronic with calming vocals, what's not to enjoy? Antropofagos is the fist track to jump out and grab me to any extent -- kind of funky bass line with some interesting strings throughout. Sereia is another standout -- the instrumental has a sense of urgency about it that is a wee bit unsettling. I'm into it. I was actually pretty excited for this one at the outset, but I am left feeling a little unfulfilled. It is fine acid jazz, with a few moments that were more interesting than the rest, but as with many entries in the genre it is fairly forgettable. I will come back for background music, but not for a dedicated listen. 3 / 5

One soothing album right there. At some points I completely forgot that I was listening to anything at all because of how good of background music it was.

Definitely had some cool sounds, just a bit too repetitive and long for me. Heard some Thievery Corp in there a bit.

I don’t think I’d listen again but I didn’t hate it

Great stuff. Travel beach music

It was different. In a good way.

Interesting southern music.

theres a burst of fun at the start of each song but then the song doesn't evolve at all and stays very repetitive.. every track is like this.. but it's pleasant.

Has very smooth vibes overall, but songs feel very long. Often in the album there are superimposed tracks of free flowing piano that are good but feel too random regarding the underlying track theme. Antropofagos has a very good base loop, reminds me of a SMT game music in the beginning, and the violin part albeit repetitive has a very good rhythm to it. Still too long though. Abraço starts as an SMT game music again and evolves into electronic, light rap and has a very good vibe overall. I understand that the objective here is to mix electronic sounds in the classic Brazilian music and this album accomplishes it. This could have been a KidA type album where it revolutionizes the genre after its release, but somewhat falls short due to being very repetitive in the electronic loops and the underlying Brazilian rhythms being mildly uninteresting. Very good album but not for me

I didn’t get to hear the whole album and I could see that some tracks might grate with the repetitive beat but I enjoyed what I heard so 3*

The album, in all its electroacoustic Latin smoothness, has a general carefree sexiness to it, drenched in humidity and wetness (from the weather and the arousal). All so laid-back, I can definitely see (hear?) why this was a revelatory record to many a listener at the time 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die came out, probably a huge entry point into South American music in general.

Pretty fun listen, had some fun instruments.

Chill vibes. Always enjoy a Brazilian contribution to the albums project. Never heard of Suba before but my god, he has an interesting life story with a tragic end.

I don’t hate it, but it’s not something I see myself going back to. Reminiscent of Gran Turismo menu music.

I have no idea what any of the lyrics were saying, but I really enjoyed the soundscape Suba created here. I wish more tracks were like the opener, that probably would've made this higher rated.

You could almost think this album is loungy enough to be played at a chic restaurant but it demands more attention than that. For every cool, laidback song, there’s another one with an experimental detour or an unexpected sound. I love the overlapping rhythms and the way melodies fit into place like puzzle pieces. It’s a fusion of Latin genres with electronic dance styles and the songs frequently don’t develop how you’d expect them too.

The album didn't get of to a good start for me, sounding a bit like a hotel lobby soft muzak. But it's good to have a non-Anglic record. The downside is that I don't really know what the songs are about.

Mal was anderes. Teilweise guter Mix.

Sambiant.

so-so sambient

This is the original "Chill Beats to Study To". Some fun time signature play occasionally, but otherwise stock-standard. 2.6/5 -> 3/5.

A beautiful sonic landscape worthy of your time, if you are in the mood to chill. Nice legacy of a short life.

This was actually very decent. Can see me sticking it on as background music.

Wow very nice discovery! Need to listen again

I dig acid jazz and downbeat-style music. This album dips its toes into both of the aforementioned subgenres and gives everything a Latin twist. I'll be honest though, the second half of the album didn't grab me as much as the first half did. Almost felt like a slight sound & tempo change, like the album took a detour.

Pleasant wine bar cool jazz type vibe. Washed over me a bit.

Nice background chillout music.

Pretty. Will be keeping for the background music playlist.

90s easy listening heimstónlist í hnotskurn. Mjög ljúft!

This was an interesting listen. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. It at times reminded me a little of Björk, but it's not that. Made for a productive start to me day, so good background music.

This album kinda tapers off for me. It starts so jazzy and smooth with real instruments, which is right up my alley, then it slowly devolves into what feels to me like EDM, which I can't help but feel is just cheap and lacks body. Glass half full I guess though.

its interesting, fresh at times, with Brazilian influences YYN

Not bad, but feels like background music, or music from a movie soundtrack. Maybe I just have a bias against electronic music. Extra star because the Brazilian flare makes it a bit more interesting than usual.

cute brunch vibes, a little more electronic than i would have expected

Halfway decent electronic/club album. At least some tracks had vocals that kept them interesting. Other than that it drone on, which I guess is the point.

Pretty good Brazilian music.

An album just to chill out to on a lazy day. You do need to like electronica slow dance.

Chill, ambient, beat driven album with world vibe. It is not something i would normally seek out but it certainly was a great album for a long morning drive.

Have mercy, generator, please--you've given me so many long albums in a row. This one is 61 minutes. I am on my knees. Is my attention span just shot? Are most of the 1001+ albums this long? Whatever. I am not familiar with this artist or album and had no idea what to expect; I did a bit of reading and learned that Suba was an up-and-coming producer who passed away in a fire at only 38 years old while trying to rescue his recordings from a studio fire, right before the album promotion for 'São Paulo Confessions' began. It's so tragic that I almost can't believe it's true. And it is such a shame, because this is so well produced and arranged. I've said before in my reviews that I'm not a "vibes" person, but this album envelopes you in vibes so completely that I can't ignore it. I love the variety of sonic approaches and instrumentation, and the guest vocalists are all important contributors to what makes 'São Paulo Confessions' work. The Wikipedia description of this album as a "musical account of life in that humid, foggy, and manic megalopolis" is a little purple, for me, but it's not inaccurate either. City living seeps out of every pore of this album. That being said, I can't say that I'll be revisiting, but some of these tracks did sneak onto my instrumental and dance playlists. Highlights: Tantos Desejos, Voce Gosta, Felicidade, Sereia, Samba Do Gringo Paulista

Cool, but not really for me.

I'm not really into trip hop but there are some nice songs here, as well as some unexpected and weird experimental moments. I'll probably put this on at one of our parties at some point.

Probably the first album thus far that I have come to completely cold. Well, not quite. The wikipedia article links Suba with Bebel Gilberto's first album, which was an absolute delight to listen to in the summer of 2000 (it still is, just to be clear). This is more Bossa-Electronica than Gilberto's contemporary Bossa Nova, so there isn't more than genre generalities to guide one here. Suba, it seems, brought a fresh and alien ear to the world of Brazilian music. This is usually a good thing. In this case, however, it feels that an organic warmness has been squeezed out at the expense of repetitive and unsubtle loops complemented by ethereal harmonies. Not a bad thing, but not really music that demands attention or concentration.

Best geinig, weer eens wat anders

Blijft een mooie taal dat portugees

Reminiscent of Kruder & Dorfmeister. So downtempo that even when it speeds up a bit it's almost comically soporific. Good though

Nice and easy listening. Nothing too noteworthy, nothing too offensive. Would make for good studying music. Top tracks: Tantos Desejos, Felicidade, Sereia

Some of these are wonderfully moody, others just background rhythms.

not expecting the sound from the cover but i really enjoyed! 3.5/5

A love story to Brazil.

Cool but repetitive in places. Some songs I loved and others I wanted to skip.

Not something I would normally have selected. Nothing jumped out at me but I'd gladly throw it on as background music.

Decent background trip hop but not very memorable

OK let me preface this by saying I’m not an expert. I liked it, but it’s not like full-blown Afrobeats or bossa nova, a little bit in the middle.

An interesting listen

Great to listen to at work

Never heard of this one before. Totally listenable but not something I'd come back to.

This was pretty different than I expected. In general, I preferred the more percussion forward tracks to tracks like Felicidade, which sounds more like just generic trip hop to me. Overall, this was alright, but not terribly interesting to me.

It’s peppy.

This was decent. A couple of tracks were a little too repetitive or uninteresting, but over-all I enjoyed the album.

This is fine for what it is. Not bad, but not my jam. 2.5.

Not really my thing

this was cool and relaxing and different for a few songs... i didn't make it through the entire album

An intriguing mix of tradition and modernity - samba with synths - but not as exciting as I might have hoped. Decent, but not great

Intriguing might listen to it in a couple of years so far 3 stars

Trip-Hop feeling combination of drum-n-bass beats, electro beeps & boops, and jazzy acoustic instruments (lots of piano in particular and some acoustic guitar leads) with that classic airy unresolved almost a-melodic Brazilian singing. The percussion parts are cool: lots of hand-drum fills in between the beats. Wierd that a potentially unique Yugoslav new wave x Brazilian jazz collaboration ends up sounding so generically 90s chill electronica - maybe something lost a move away from synths and into digital production?

I'd say this is an above average "electronic" album. The Brazilian drum beats and odd instrumentation at least make it interesting. It's a 3.49, rounded down.

Had some nice ambient tones, overall really chill and enjoyable. Nothing overly memorable though but it was a decent listen. 3 stars

Thought this would be worse than what it is. It's still not anything I want to hear again. Take a 3, friendo.

Very 90s cyber cafe

Different

Cool and chilled out Serbian trip hop that would be suited to a trendy and relaxed late night lounge bar. Let's order some rakija and drink to the finest Balkan music I've heard since Rambo Amadeus covered the Simpsons theme tune at Exit Festival 2006. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Felicidade Date listened: 23/11/23

Not bad, inoffensive and a pleasant listen with some good moments here and there.

In one ear and out the other.

There some good parts of this album, but there were also some that were a little too strange. 3/5 Probably won’t listen again

The first 1/2 dozen songs are pretty good, sort of latin/samba sounding. Pleasant enough if somewhat background-y. But the further I went, the more the electronic themes came more forward, and the less I liked it. And by the last song I was ready to be done. Some of these songs would be good on a playlist, but others would be skips. Certainly nothing I feel the need to actually own. 3/5

Music is good but never grabbed me.

This was pretty cool. Like classical jazz edm. Nice stuff to just listen to.

Nice sounds. First listen to this crowd.

Not what I expected from an album titled "São Paulo Confessions." Suba delivered an unanticipated Brazilian album by... not being Brazilian. But a Serbian-born musician moving to Brazil and collaborating with local artists in making an album that defies prediction worked very well. Although there are hints of sounds I would associate with trip hop, it isn't electronica mixed with hip hop. Instead, Suba's electronica is mixed with jazz, funk, and soul for some kind of combination of acid jazz and downtempo electronica. There's definitely a Latin influence in parts, and some samba drums on occasion, but it all feels part of a diverse whole. "São Paulo Confessions" is very chill and a pleasant surprise. "São Paulo Confessions" could have been a breakout for Suba, but he tragically died the same month it was released attempting to save his recordings from a fire in the studio.

Fun at times. Also quite strange at times. You know. Like the sideways head tilt, raised eyebrow thing where you ask yourself, “Is thi the same thing I was enjoying a song ago.” Lots of cool fusion sounds going on though.

Nice for electronic music. Sad story about the musician dying young. Would listen again.

Nice variation, hope there's more like this. Gonna give it another listen.

Very nice, but each song seems to have its own overly repetitive portion.

Very chill, a few really cool ideas sprinkled in. 5/10

Not what I expected but really engaging, layered and compelling.

It's okay. I do love a good Brazilian female singer, but at the same time it's too long and repetitious. I enjoyed parts of it but probably won't listen again. 2.5 stars, rounding up to 3.

Not bad - probably wouldn't choose to listen to, but cool sounds

Someone needs to come along and turn 3 of the half baked tracks into one really good one. Not without its moments, but often left me feeling like it was unfinished or out of ideas. High 2 rounded up to a 3.

Extremely interesting. Like DJ Shadow's *Endtroducing*, except that *Sâo Paulo Confessions* uses its own "abstract" and nocturnal vocabulary to explore the many sides of Brazilian / Latin music, instead of the ones of hip hop. On another (sad) note, Suba's fate is simply tragic. So heartbreaking that someone so talented died so young (and trying to save tapes he had recorded to boot). Heartbreaking. I don't have a lot of time for a proper review today, unfortunately. 8/10 for general purposes (5+3), which translates to a 3/5 for the ones of this list. Number of albums left to review: 458 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 254. Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 128 (including this one) Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 162

Good album with some good grooves. But in the end none made me want to hit repeat.

-Didn’t write a BL- AL: a very compelling debut (and last) album from an artist I knew nothing about. The beats were amazing. Some of the singers were good but there were certainly stronger and weaker cuts on the album. FT: “Antropofagos”, “Felicidade” 3/5

I noticed the deficiency as I started listening to jazz: An ear-blindness to all but the stereotypically blinding expressions of Latin music. Here, it feels like a possible handicap. Suba's production is quiet, the colors of aural São Paulo don't pop, and plenty of subtlety remains to go around.

Funky world beqt vibe

Most unexpected. It started with an infectious rhythm and kept is going continuously seamlessly drifting between instrumental and vocals.

Great background music while I was working. I feel I'll equipped to otherwise evaluate this, way out of my depth

Perhaps if your a fan of the niche sub-genre of electronic salsa/mambo music, this album means something to you. To me, it's ok background music. Would choose to listen again, but it isn't a bad record. Just not my taste.

Very nice!

Some great tunes, but an album is a big serving and my appetite dropped off pretty quickly.

Very chilled vibes this passed me by without incident

Hard to not like this. Very easy on the ears

Tantos Desejos, Antropofagos, Felicidada, Um Dia Comum, Abraco, and Pecados de Madrugada. Love the Samba parts and the bongos. Feel like it went on forever and could have been a decent amount shorter. 7/10

voce gosta. ez 3

Kinda entertaining background music, but a lot of it just passed me by

Groovy and a little funky. Just fine. 3.5

I was surprised by this album because I started it and looked at its length and thought that I was gonna hate it by the end. Weirdly, while I still thought it was really long, I didn’t totally despise it even though most of these ambient electronica albums wear me down too much by the end. This one I was fine with for probably 80% of it. There were some duds but mostly fine.

Interesting

Nothing to dislike, foreign modern electronic/jazzy.

not my style but ok

Bijzondere muziek. Sommige nummers doen me denken aan "Techno Trance vol. 3" uit de jaren '90. Andere nummers zijn weer veel zweveriger. ***

Pretty chill, good morning music. Could be played at setbreak

Didn’t leave too much of an impression - I wasn’t overly wowed but didn’t find myself bored either. Warrants a relisten to make sure I caught everything this time around, but I’m not sure I’ve ever felt more middle of the road about an album here than this
