Good stuff
Super vibey, but nothing really stood out. The first album I'd listen to again on my own.
Liked it a lot. I've been enjoying this music more and more
Love me some spacey music. Great for active and passive listening.
Really good! Kinda like bon Iver but more indie
Listened before
7.5/10 F.t.: silver soul
closer to a 4.5
cool indie from the 2010's, minimalist in instrumentation and intimate in lyrics truly creative recordings throughout the work, with moments of brilliant songwriting well supported by utilitarian, unpretentious but atmospheric and emotional instrumentals despite the good musicality, i find it difficult to find truly memorable moments and also to connect with the kind of intimate emotions it tries to convey
During my indie era I was never a Beach House girl and now it was a reminder why 💁♀️
Sounds about right for the era. IDK if it does much for me.
After a pair of controversial/challenging albums recently, it was a nice change of pace to hear a bit of low-key shoe-gaze from pop duo Beach House. This is a good album for chilling out to in a non-threatening way - it’s not going to set the world on fire (we’re already doing a pretty good job of that judging by the weather), but it neither wants to nor needs to. Lead singer Victoria Legrand has an appropriately dreamy voice, reminding me a little of Elizabeth Fraser from the Cocteau Twins and the music is minimally laid back and relaxed. I’d be hard pressed to name a single song from this after one listen, but I’m going to give it another go while I’m working today which should tell you something.
Interesting album - very smooth and all. Not a sound I typically go for as it feels like the songs blend together a bit much for me. Overall pleasant.
Never listened. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Good - I enjoy the hypnotic feel and wordless vocalisations. The songs are catchy and enjoyable without feeling too light or airy. Silver Soul, Lover Of Mine and Better Times are highlights.
This album is is real good and dreamy, at its best it creates this soundscape that sucks you into its world bringing warmth inside every part of your body. The guitar on this LP was my favorite part of the whole thing and whenever it was played with the effect the band put on it I basically swooned, songs like silver soul and better times are good examples of this for me. Although I do love a lot about this record I will say certain aspects of it do not really do it for me. Some songs that feel a bit more poppy kind of fall flat for me like Lover of mine for example. I feel like this album is at its best when it makes a dreamy atmosphere with the harmonies of the voices and choices of instrumentation that's why the last track Take care works so well in my eyes. I good album that makes me excited to see what more Beach house has to offer. Fav tracks: Zebra, Sliver Soul, Norway, Better times, and Take care
Another 2000s thing I never really got. All these songs sound the same.
pretty good! giving it 3 solely because it's not something i'd listen to on my own / not my fav genre, but it's good quality music for sure
A lovely sounding album which is very well made and performed, it doesn't hit 4 star for me purely out of personal preference as it's just a little too slow for my liking. 3.5
This album is very good at some parts, but I'm afraid I don't end up liking the dreamy-atmospheric sound of this band. Most of the songs have different beautiful elements, and there are several layers to explore in here, and the mixture of those sounds really give that dreamlike sound the band tries to achieve... but I feel like some songs need something else before getting monotonous. So, I've liked it overall, but I'll need some time to figure out if I want to give this album another try.
6.5/10
This was a surprisingly decent listen. Not really something I would come back to but nice nonetheless.
Rv
Definitely well made music but it just gets a bit monotonous as the album goes on. Nothing really resonant or striking, just dreamy pop. I can’t say I dislike it but I definitely don’t feel like listening to more of it right now.
I had a jazz record yesterday so the following album gets an extra star by not being jazz. Found this tranquil and relaxing. Sounded like someone then i got it Jake Bugg. So not sure who sounds like who Was doing a bit of tidying up and this was pleasant enough.
This is the first time that I have heard this album, but I have heard a couple of the records that came after this album and its not a dramatic change in their overall aesthetic. It's a dream pop album that probably is influenced by the later work of the Cocteau Twins. It has a lot of that atmospheric sound, but has enough differences to give it its own voice. Not a spectacular and innovative album, but one that produces a group of engaging songs. Solid work.
A good album, I liked Silver Soul, Norway and Lover Of Mine the most.
Mys bakgrunds elektropop
Heard it so many times. It's a dream pop classic, but I honestly am bored of it now.
Pretty cool, and dreamy. Captures the vibe of indie 2010's perfectly. One song got play on our local station.
It starts real strong, but then peters out and begins to blend together. Not a bad blend though, and I could see this one growing on me. Highlights-Zebra, Silver Soul, and Lover of Mine.
Kind of a dreary album. It peaked my interest by sounding similar to The National and other bands in that vein. But it didn't keep my interest.
Like a better Radiohead.
Surprisingly kind of enjoyed it...
It's ok. I feel like I would've liked this a lot more had I heard them during college, but less so now. They're like Fleet Foxes Lite. Not bad music by any means, but it just feels like imitation of music that I'm more familiar with and love. I really don't hate it, but I can't say I love it either.
The vibe reminds me of "No One's Gonna Love You" by Band of Horses. Especially the big track: Silver Soul. It's a calm rock, reminds me of Mazzy Star too. I dig it. Kind of a high 3, might turn to a 4 with more listens.
Ahí va
Love me a bit of Beach House but this album didn’t do much for me.
I really enjoy Beach House, but I'll be honest - I couldn't distinguish one song from another, not while I was listening to it and not afterwards. I love their style and their songwriting, but here..... it's just sort of like green tea over rice. THREE STARS
Nice and dreamy.
Bo-ring. Like, one of these songs at a time is "hey, that's pretty good!" And then there's another. And another. And none really sticks out from another
Interesting indie vibes. They sound very similar to groups like Vampire Weekend or Tame Impala with influences from the Beatles and other British Invasion bands along with folk singers and songwriters. There’s also some synthwave that makes an appearance, which I quite like. As is often the case with indie music from the 2010s, melancholy lyrics overlap hopeful beats creating a nostalgic feeling; a sense of what we hoped for versus what we actually got. Which, based on the name of the album, was probably the point. Soulful harmonies round out this sweet, but ultimately not unique, album. I certainly enjoyed it, but nothing about it was particularly special. And they weren’t exactly ahead of their time with the sound, though they were a couple years ahead of the curve.
Nice. I'm all for hearing another contempo album. There isn't too much for me to base my genre prediction off of with that album cover, but I'll hedge my bets on another contemporary, artsy pop album similar to that of "In Our Heads" by Hot Chip, which is an album I've also listened to recently. Might as well just hit play on this one. Yeah, I'd say I was pretty much on the money with my prediction. I can appreciate a pick like this for being decently unique and a solid representation of where music was at during the time, but it's appeal isn't all there for me. I don't want to go on another schizo tirade about the millennials, but the artsy indie albums which were prominent in the mid-to-late 2000s and early 2010s are kinda lame, I won't lie. Obviously, what I dislike most about this music is how impersonal and aloof it is, though I can't complain much as this music was tolerable and easy to listen to on the whole. As far as the actual music is concerned, there were some decent points. The guitars are generally the highlight of this album and carry the songs along nicely thanks to their delicate, measured sound. The vocals are also decent. They have a breathy, yet stressed sound to them which fits with the established style while also injecting energy into the music. This specific vocal style is also one that I heavily associate with 2010s pop music, so bonus points there. The most pronounced aspect of this album are the synths, which are also commendable. They have a soft, rounded, quirky sound which reminds me quite a bit of "Congratulations" by MGMT. While the music holds its own pretty well, I must admit that the average track length of five minutes was a little too much for me to stomach. The atmospheric sound of this album definitely warrants songs of that length, but my interest in this style of music wasn't enough to hold my attention for that long. The latter half of the album kind of blew by me as a result, though on the whole I thought this was a competent and decent listen. Book time. One of the best offerings of late-2000s/early-2010s dreamy pop music. A pivot in the band's style towards less lo-fi and more varied music. About as innocent in its subject matters as it is depraved. Wikipedia says this album was warmly received by critics and made many best-of lists for 2010. It performed very well on the US indie charts, but had more modest success in the handful of Western and European countries where it charted. Like I said earlier, this music is a good representation of the time that it belongs to, so I think it's more than fair that I let this one through. I cosign this inclusion.
Overall: 6/10 Had it's moments, and would be a very good album to fall asleep to. I found it a bit boring at times. Fav Song: Real Love
I definitely don’t think its an album for me. It wasn’t bad, but I couldn’t really look past what I was hearing for the most part and a lot of the tracks sounded a lil’ similar to each other That being said, i do enjoy “Lover of Mine”. That was a good songgg! Its definitely not bad by all means, I’d probably just have to give it another shot
Lying in bed with an hour to go before my alarm, a hard rain shower pelts the windows and keeps me from falling back asleep, so I put on today’s album: Teen Dream by Beach House. I was immediately surrounded by a dreamy, relaxing soundscape. I enjoyed it for what it was, but after a while every song began to blur together, and in the end the album didn’t leave much of a lasting impression.
I got to the penultimate track on this album and it wasn't until I started reading their Wikipedia page that I realized there was a female vocalist. It straight up sounded like a whiny emo guy. This definitely maintains a cohesive vibe and I can understand why this genre is called "dream pop." Overall, this is just one long 49 minute song. If you're into this kind of thing I guess this is a good album??
Not heard of these folks before Not expecting much But surprisingly ok Its going to take a few more listens, but so far, so good
Álbum gostosinho de ouvir para relaxar.
Liked it. Cool vibe Standout songs: Silver soul Walk in the park Take care
This was the first album so far that i'd never heard of, that I really should have done. It seemingly passed me by. It was ok, I don't particularly like dream pop and I didn't particularly like this
That one album from a synth pop/rock Adjective Noun band of the 2010s!
Not really a huge indie fan but this one grew on me and was a decent vibe. No memberberries like wise but he influenced us. Plus we got it while in our Costa Rica beach house so that’s gotta count for something. Plus the “money trees” sample adds to my appreciation
good listening music but not my best
very chill music
It was cool. As in lukewarm. Pretty nice, some tasteful bits. But not essential. 1001 is a lot of albums. Does it belong here? Maybe more than some.
Another easily listenable album with a very pretty sound, but with nothing really exceptional to recommend it. Certainly not bad, but it highlights how having a list with 1001 entries is probably too big.
3.5
This, to me, felt more like backing music than something I would sit and listen to top to bottom. Many of the reviews I have seen of this album are really high ratings, and they talk about the nostalgia of the album. I never listened to this while growing up, so I feel that maybe it's more of a nostalgia thing, taking people back to when life was easier, rather than it actually being an objectively great album. I feel like this is the same as my reasoning behind loving 'Back To Bedlam' by James Blunt. I grew up with that album, so I love listening to it, and it is forever one of my favourite albums. But this album, I feel, is a sort of list of songs that just blur into each other. I was awaiting a catchy hook or lyric, but I was left disappointed. However, that being said, as background music, this is really lovely to listen to. The vocals, harmonies, and instrumentals flow really well together and sort of help you to zone out in a way and give you the chance to just sit and breathe. But trying to actually sit and listen to each song while paying attention becomes a bit tedious, and the tracks sort of drag on a bit too much for me. Stand-outs: Real Love Lover of Mine Walk in the Park
Ihan okei kait, ei ärsyttänyt. Muutamia kivoja kohtia siellä oli, mutta ei mitenkään sillee himoja herättänyt.
The first two tracks are perfectly pleasant but feel inconsequential. I was mentally starting to write this off, but then something clicked on Norway. Yes, it still feels like music designed to sell to advertising agencies, but I like this one. The next couple songs aren't bad. Then I like the keyboard melody on Lover of Mine. It gives it some much needed weight. 10 Mile Stereo also has some bite to it, and Take Care isn't a bad closer. You could play this for almost anyone and they wouldn't be offended. But it's hard to imagine Beach House being anyone's favorite band. For that reason, ***
The music in general is my taste, yet somehow none of the songs really stuck with me. It's nice in the background, but I don't need to actively listen to it necessarily.
Unknown band for me. Good album overall.
Decent background music for getting work done but overall, unremarkable. Sorry Beach House fans, you're kinda boring.
Snoozly and velvety. Good naptime music.
Buen álbum, me gustó, no es totalmente mi estilo pero se acerca mas q los anteriores
#897. I can tell that this is the kind of thing that would piss me off if I was listening to it after work on a regular raggedy ass Tuesday, but today is a Saturday and I just can't be bothered enough to care one way or another. 3/5: fine
I’ve never heard of the band or the album before. The music was pretty good, though it did tend to veer into the realm of polite boredom. I can’t decide if I want to listen to the album again. But at least I’m thinking about it. 3/4
I think I forgot to pay attention or maybe that was the point, at any rate dream pop has yet to convince me that it's a great genre. It's pleasent enough as just background, but it's too busy to be ambient but still not "song" enough to make me pay attention enough that I remember it Standouts - 3/5
Had listened to it prior. Dark and dreamy whichnInthiught was interesting when it came out. Nice spin again
All these bands start to sound the same to me. Second half of the record makes it nice, but I won't actively listen to this again.
Dober dober
I'm surprised I wasn't on this in 2010 as it was very much me at the time. It very much fills that post pop punk into indie popularity time. Absolutely can see this on the One Tree Hill soundtrack which is a compliment in my end. Didn't hit as much as I wanted it too, but still a good album
3.5
Nothing special but would listen again
Thought I would like this more. I think I prefer their other albums. Still good but great?
all the songs kinda sound the same but like they are good. It’s like cigarettes after sex, just gets boring after a bit but like if it comes on I’ll bump to it
Oh wow, buen disco. Buen disco.
I was expecting to like this more. I picked up a couple of Beach House albums back in the day and kept them in frequent-ish rotation, so I was looking forward to adding another to the shortlist. It’s still pretty and well-made, spacious and atmospheric as any Beach House album, but it didn’t grab me. I enjoyed it well enough and could see myself giving it another shot, but for now I’m pleased but not awed.
Yeah, it’s ok
Dream pop Zebra Used to be
u redu je album pogotovo me je iznenadila druga pesma koja izgleda da je sample u money trees
Quiet but pretty Dream Pop.
Not bad not great!
Not gonna lie the oscillating guitar parts on “Norway” made me a little seasick.
Fifty minutes of blissed out dream pop. While there's not much to differentiate the tracks, each one is pleasant in its one way. It's both a positive and a negative that there's no song that stands out as great or awful. While I wouldn't necessarily expect big hooks on an album like this, I do wish that it instead felt layered or hypnotic. But it's also lacking a swirl of sounds that really draw you in. Most tracks have a single synth or guitar that's too clean or anonymous to really smother you. Victoria Legrand's deep vocals provide a nice weight to the album, but there are times they sound clumsy, and the lyrics aren't anything to write home about. Still, there's nothing here to drive you away, and it's a peaceful listen while it's on. Just don't expect to hear anything that sticks with you.
Nothing spectacular but definitely enjoyable.
ziemlich psychedlisches Album, war ganz okay aber auch nicht überragend
Ganz nettes Pop-Album. So richtige Highlights für mich waren nicht dabei. 3/5
Pleasant dream pop. Beginning to sound dated
Left me totally lukewarm. 3.0
It's fine/ good I remember feeling 3.5
Smooth lyrics, and chill vibes.
Working musixb
It's fine... But it is forgettable.
3/5 not my cup of tea but work totally see how this is my boyfriends favorite band. in the most complimentary way.
It’s ok I suppose but doesn’t really inspire me to listen to their other albums. Unchallenging background music at best!
I thought it was ok, first couple songs were really good but after that it was meh
Light and relaxing
Soothing
Solid album.
“Zebra” - chamber pop, minimalism, Philip Glass, careful and restrained. Close listening is rewarded with deliberate repetitions of figures. The verse and chorus chord progressions seem simple at first but with small two beat detours here and there, before we rise or resolve. At first what seams simple slowly reveals a complexity of craft not for ornamentation but for the object as a whole. An Amish chair? What works is when it works for emotion and contemplation. What doesn’t work is maybe not entirely the fault of Beaxh House, but it also works wonders of a sleepy coffee shop. “Norway”, “Walk in the Park” - introduces drum machines. Harp like guitars give life and float. Now less Amish chair and more gourmet chocolatier box of truffles. I start to wonder if this tidy little box of gilded crafts the band made can be faulted. The pop nature of the album becomes more evident, and although extremely well made—what is added as deliberate as what’s left out— I think about what I love here but what is tragic that Beach House’s precious creations have been gobbled up like a $12 eclair and a tall cinnamon turmeric mocha from a 7th wave Christian coffee shop. It might be less a fault of society’s issues with consumption of delicious and approachable things, and more with Beach House’s clear choice to omit anything more bitter / include anything less palatable than the sadness, intospection, and cleverness that they’ve hidden behind vetiver scented gauze and Pendleton wools that hides the wounds too well. “Lover of Mine” - a high point so far. Intro reminds me of 80s “I’ve been waiting for a girl like you”. And follows with 80s songwriter aynth rock requisite sophistication. The synthetic quality is welcome and well delivered. “10 Mile Stereo” soars. Buried drums give altitude to the melodic devices (string synth) The drum machine is a tightly wound propeller. I like the way the album has opened up from Glass to explore various pop textures and ideas, with a thesis in intimacy and clockwork art and artifice kept firmly in slot. “Real Love” aside from a vehicle to prove capability of emotion through breathy ranged vocals is a snoozer until the army of wind up toys comes in like an art museum gift shop. (This is good at first taste but I’m ready to move on once the trick is revealed). “take care” - I’m tired. My turmeric mocha has worn off. The emotion and and care is still present though and the experience isn’t entirely hollow. This song is like a high school slow dance in a cedar lodge. Fire beats the cavernous place. The song reminds us that even in the coldness of the world, no matter what wood steel and glass facade we find ourselves shopping in, we still have human connection despite the cold. This is ultimately an optimistic album. The shallow pop is a not brave but still kind of effective attempt at creating conviviality and connection and warmth in a cold world. Is this using the tools of the system to subvert the system? Not revolutionary but not pointless either. Glass: promethium, terror, triumph, glass and steel skyscraper, suffocation, mushroom cloud is still a cloud Beach house: promethian principal is the fire in hearth, between two people. Joining and splitting. Like the atomic fission or fusion. It is not algorithmic, to credit. It was right hearted, but had the misfortune to fall prey to the consumerism that it was trying to find optimism in. Like feeding a wild bear with the sweetest of intentions, and it bites off your hand.
No standouts. Perfectly listenable.
Somehow, both Beach House and their album "Teen Dream" had completely passed me by until now. My initial impressions were positive; the opening track is gentle and dreamy, with a sonically broad, 'full' scope. The vocals are restrained and pleasant, underpinned by lovely harmonies. However, this isn't an album for toe-tapping or head-shaking; it is a 'listening' record that demands you sit down and truly take it in. It is subtle and low-key, but as the tracks progressed, I found it somewhat one-paced. While inoffensive to the ear, it lacked the drama, variety or dynamic shifts needed to keep me engaged. I doubt I’ll be revisiting it. Three stars. (And a final thought: the artwork is truly awful.) 1 "Zebra" (4/5) 2 "Silver Soul" (3/5) 3 "Norway" (3/5) 4 "Walk in the Park" (3/5) 5 "Used to Be" (4/5) 6 "Lover of Mine" (3/5) 7 "Better Times" (3/5) 8 "10 Mile Stereo" (3/5) 9 "Real Love" (3/5) 10 "Take Care" (3/5) Total - 32 Average - 3.2 221/1001 124/221 albums reviewed were new to me.
Enjoyable
Pretty, breezy, gauzy album...but there's not much to it and it just kind of sits there. I forgot about it as soon as I heard it. Not bad by any means, just kind of samey and boring. Some of it was like something that would fit on a Lynch/Badalamente soundtrack though which I can appreciate.
Some soothing dream pop. I really like the first half, opening track is lovely and I also enjoy Walk In the Park. But it gets very samey quickly. Beach House nails the ethereal quality of this kind of music but they don't really have the dynamic edge that can make it interesting, in the vein of groups like Cocteau Twins. Never fully understood the hype they get in the indie world but, it's a pleasant sound
This is another example here of nothing wrong with it but no memorable. This is 1,001 Albums to Hear Before You Die...I've gotten a lot of "1,001 Albums that wont annoy you but you wont remember tomorrow"
Fun listen, nothing special 5/10 3/5
Pleasant but uncompelling.
It was perfectly pleasant if somewhat unremarkable.
Is this easy listening? There's nothing offensive about it, but there's nothing that truly excited me about it. I would absolutely, in a heartbeat, put this on in the background at a dinner party if I didn't want to point on classical music. But I didn't get swept up in any of the tracks and want to repeat them. Solid. Inoffensively bland. Musically strong. Just not my cup of tea.
alright
Really good dream pop but I can't say that this album is particularly memorable.
Very representative of that decade. It's very good, but I hardly want to listen to this kind of stuff in general.
A great lush, warm and melancholic vibe all the way, but I can't say I was hooked by anything.
5.5/10
Popero, de ensueño, espacia, lindos teclados y efectos en generall. Está muy bien logrado pero creo que lo dreamy lo vuelve largo y eso le quita fuerza
Would listen again. Don't see the top album status, but piqued my interest.
It's not bad. Does what it says on the tin
Nothing special
Generic chill sound, but not displeasing. I can tell why this flew under the radar of the masses, though. Needs more bite.
You couldn't find a more appropriate label for this than "Dream Pop".
It reminds me a little of Arcade Fire. I do not like Arcade Fire.
love the dreaminess, but gets a bit old towards the end of the album, 3/5
Pretty chill, don't know how often I'd revisit thkught
Album #1,001 Dreamy shoegazey background music. Nothing great, nothing offensive. It just is.
I like shoe-gazing, this one was good enough to add to the rotation.
Was wondering why this album was in the list. Then Silver Soul came on and of course it's because of Kendrick. I know of the most popular song of this artist because of these sad tiktok edits that are popular nowadays but I don't think their normal repertoire is that interesting. The start of this album is great to have on in the background but feel more like something you listen to when looking out a car window feeling self-pity. Definitely a vibe but not the one I'm in right now, maybe I'll try listening again later. The later part of the album got better after Used To Be
this is the type of band to be in. just chill af
I had zebra on my end of year favourite songs mix of 2010. Funnily enough I never got around to listening to the album. I enjoyed listening to it today and it is definitely worth repeat listens. Dreamy music for when you just need to chill out. I’ve given it 3 stars, but feel it could be a 4 if I spend some more time with it.
Put it on, listened to it. Next day forgot I had listened to it and put it on again. Understood why. It's nice in the background, it's well put together but it's kind of just there in the background.
While this is classified as straight up pop I would put it in a genre that is called something like psychedelic pop if that is a thing. Its slow and sometimes kind of trippy and repetitive but the vibe throughout the album remain coherent and its definitely something I would listen to again or have on in the background while reading in the evening.
Not my favorite of them. It lost me in the middle and it's a little repetitive. Favorites: Silver Soul and Take Care.
Dream pop duo that's a bit more shoegaze-y and ethereal than similar sounding MGMT or Band of Horses. Tracks kinda run together in a not great way. Standout is "Silver Soul".
Teen Dream is undeniably lush and beautiful. The textures are warm, the melodies drift pleasantly, and the whole album creates a soft, dreamlike atmosphere that’s easy to sink into. As mood music, it works very well. It’s calm, cohesive, and carefully constructed. For me, though, it stays mostly on the surface. I enjoy having it on, but it doesn’t dig in emotionally or linger once it’s over. The hazy vocals and slow-moving arrangements blur together in a way that’s soothing rather than compelling. It feels designed to support a mood more than to demand attention. I understand why this album means a lot to people, and I respect the craft behind it. It’s a record I could happily play in the background, but not one I feel drawn to sit with or return to intentionally. A solid three stars: lovely, immersive, and pleasant, but not something that deeply resonates with me.
Good
This was OK, hadn't listened to much of them before and an entire album was a bit much for me but wouldn't mind hearing some of these tracks in a mix.
I don't know this band but I found this to be a reasonably enjoyable dream pop album, able to hold its own against some of the other shoegaze albums that've come up here. It's also probably doomed to slide out of memory fairly easily though.
Disfrute la vibra, buenos tracks
Another band I wasn’t aware of. Another album that got much better on second listen. A bit dull first time round. Enjoyed tracks 2-4 second time round and Better Times. A few still didn’t move me though - e.g. Lover of Mine. Slight melancholic feel to it all. From a 2 to a high 3.
Nice chill vibes. Perhaps a little too mellow? 2.5 if it was an option
First listen and it is from Sub Pop, so looking forward to it. The first two songs started off jaunty and energizing and I was poised to purchase it in whole. I may still grab those songs, however the tunes slowly turn repetitive and in some cases badly out of tune, not that tune is a must, but more than that...discordant. Lover of Mine in particular made me push away.
Beach House/’Teen Dream’ are good but do I really need this album before I die? I’ve seen Beach House and it was an oddly loud concert. I enjoyed it then it kinda left my mind (besides how loud it was). This is good relaxation music to fall asleep to. The tracks blend together and it’s calming. I’ve listened to many Beach House albums and they all sound the same: solid but nondescript. Top tracks: “Zebra,” “Walk in the Park,” “Take Care”
This album came out at the height of the indie movement of the aughts, so of course I'm familiar with it. It didn't grab me then, and it doesn't really grab me now. I recognize that it's good at what it does. I think the dreamy synth pop sound is cool, and they were certainly kings of it in the day. But, it's a little slow and a little bit monotonous for me. It's still an enjoyable album, but I wouldn't say that it's anything exceptional and certainly not an album that everyone needs to hear. However, if this sound is your thing, it's a must listen.
This was fine. I didn't feel like this absolutely had to be part of a 'must-listen' list... but it was a perfectly fine listen for me. A pretty solid 3 rating. I wanted to like this more actually - 'Teen Dream' is a fantastic name for a record! Cool picture on the cover too. Overall I was just kind of happy to be through with it when it was over.
Nice, mellow :).
Good dreamy pop but hasn't aged as well as other albums from that era
There’s this sort of laziness about these guys that works for me. Slow slide like guitars and mellow but not too mellow vocals. There’s an almost trance like state with these songs. Buuuutttttttt…… Nothing changes. The songs hop from one to another with nothing being better than the previous one. That could work, believe me I know it can but here, it doesn’t. This had promise. It starts off confusing your ears and your feelings and then just lets you sit there. Like you have been edging this whole time and you never get to the end. Choice cut: Walk in the Park
Dreamy synthpop. Overall a good listen but not my favorite album from them.
I like the ethereal, keyboard-driven sound, but it feels like there isn’t much musical range on display. The first track was really promising though, I really like Victoria Legrand’s vocals on this album. 3/5
Chill background music, but I don't think I'd come back to it
Perfectly passable dream pop
I had never heard of this band. The album seems designed to be listened to in a shared student flat while everyone smokes weed. Fair enough…there have been some great albums you could say that about. I didn’t love it but it did grow on me as it went along. I hadn’t registered until after I’d finished that it was a 2010 release. I assumed it must have been a late ‘90s album because parts of it sounded so similar to Spritualized (whose ‘Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space’ album must surely be on this list?) but Spiritualized were over a decade sooner. Also wasn’t sure where they were from while I was listening: if you’d have told me they were Scandinavian that would have sounded plausible. Baltimore, Maryland, as it turns out. The tracks I preferred were those with the female vocalist. I liked the last track Take Care best. I won’t mind if having played them for 1001 albums purposes means a track or two of theirs pops up in my algorithmic playlists now and again.
I think I like the slow, liquidy jams here. Very chill, but also very easy to let this one drop into the background and not pay attention while it's playing.
It was like one long 45 minute song that just had little breaks in between. 5/10
Solid Dream pop album that gets better with the time. I didn't see the one thing that convinced me of it being needed on this list to be frank.
I liked it, it was good. It would be a 3.5 if I could but couldn’t stomach putting this the same rating as the Eagles lol.
Mellow but doesn’t stick with me for some reason
Kinda averag
Enjoyed it. Recognized some songs, reminds me of David Gray.
Pleasant enough but I’ve heard this sound done much better
Usually my kind of thing but this never gets out of second gear.
3,5
Stuck in my head more than I would have thought, though not my cup of tea. Track 2 is the highlight.
Background music
nije za mene, al fora, na trenutke baš lijepo :)
5/10… dreamgaze/ dreampop
So dreamy, but never to the point of feeling like it blew itself away; it remained fluid but thick and sweet.
Nice dream pop album. I remember when this came out and it’s accurate about it being an influential record. Lots of pop and indie of today took its cues from this record. Some of the songs blur together and just aren’t interesting enough to keep my attention but this is for the most part a solid 2010’s record.
This was nice in part and lush. But it was also completely unmemorable. I'm reviewing days later and that's all I remember about it.
A good album that I wouldn't normally listen to. That's a three star rating, baby
Beach House is one of those bands who has one song they play over and over, but I like that one song.
Money Trees sample spotted
Meh, it’s an ok album
Interesting mellow album with some cool vocals. Highlights: "Used to Be" and "Better Times"
It was pretty and dream like. Nothing slapped but I could listen and not be upset. Parts reminded me a bit of the Pixies
I really like the dreamy quality of this and listened a couple times hoping to be wowed by getting a little deeper with it. And while I enjoyed it, there wasn’t enough substance there to really love it. It felt like something was missing. A trusted source informs me their subsequent albums are much better, so I plan to explore those!
Another album that I own that is sorta meh. Sonically, I love the sounds that generated but the lyrics and singing seem kind of one note
Decent album, good coffee shop music 3.5/5 bags of popcorn 🍿
3.5 Stars
I don’t have any feelings about this
Not a bad little indie rock album. Mellow and spacey. Nice easy start to the day. Cover art is pretty low effort 😒
Solid dream pop. Nice sounding, but nothing mind-blowing. I'd spin it again, but not in any rush to do so.
2.9 Dream pop isn't my favourite genre. It's also not my least favourite. The only band that ever sunk was Alt-J, as they expanded outside the dream pop horizon and had some experimental/folky bits to then. These though, could lump them amongst the hundreds of other dream pop bands that have floated through existence in the last 20 years. I can't see anyone looking back on this in 50 years time and thinking this changed music. So terribly beige and inoffensive. It's nice to listen to, but leaves you feeling a bit empty
This was a reasonably pleasant listen, and given some of the super derivative boring stuff on this list, I'm happy to have something that didn't annoy me for a change... most of the newer material isn't all that great, frankly. I suspect the author is under financial pressure to come up with 20 or 30 new albums every decade so he can release a new edition. This is, of course, pointless and frustrating. If the book covers roughly the mid 1950s to current day mid 2020s, that's 70 years, with 1001 albums. If there was going to be a meaningful attempt to update the book, every decade he should be replacing about 150 albums (!) not 20 or 30. The result, for whatever reason, is something that is neither fish nor fowl. It doesn't really capture the range of material it claims to capture... there are far too many random UK acts from the 1980s and 1990s... these could be summarily removed. I also think that brilliant musical artists, like the Byrds and David Bowie, could have just the most essential three or four albums, same with the Beatles, and you'd create more variety as well as having the list serve as a hook for further exploration. Anyhow, the book is what the book is, but I wish it encouraged more exploration outside the list by having a wider range of artists on it. (I've been keeping a list of things that need to be added, when I finish and get to submit an album, and it's kind of amazing the stuff that isn't on the list at all... like the Moody Blues! Wild that such an important seminal UK band isn't represented in the 1001 at all. Crazy.)
Lil bit generic. 2005-2012 or so I was out of the country, so maybe my perspective's skewed, but I just don't get much value out of this tho it's not bad per se.
Achei bem relaxante, mas demais pro dia dia. Bom para aqueles dias de muita ansiedade.
3/5
Gentle soothing sounds for the permanently apathetic.
I didn't hate it, but it made me feel very very sleepy. 2.5
It’s a beautiful album, just too shoe gazey for me.
Quite liked this one. Soft undertones and chill vibes throughout
This is a good album. Not sure I'm the right demo for dream pop, but this has some really good bits to it. Might not return, but glad I heard it. 6/10
Vibey. Good background music while I work.
It’s nice. For me it lacks something. Soul? Commitment? Emotion? Cmon guys. Look up from your shoes and make eye contact
that brought me back to a nice time in my life but also a time with way better music than this.
I had this album when it came out. I liked it ok then (Walk in the Park was always fav) and I enjoyed relistening today for the nostalgia but I do think it’s still just ok.
Pleasant like a warm summer breeze that I will never think of again.
I've never heard of the artist, but I liked the album
You have to be an a specific mood to enjoy that. But I think if you have this mood it's amazing
Something too cheer up a funeral
Kind of a drone but in a good way.
This did grow on me a bit. Really liked the Zebra song.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect of Beach House. I noticed I like many of the artists that Apple Music tagged as similar, so I was excited to give this album a listen. Several of the song intros are gorgeously gauzy. The lead singer’s voice is really interesting; it reminds me of Alison Moyet. I found the lyricism to be poetic and moving. The lush lyrics combined with the dreamy arrangements make this album such a vibe, perfect for basking on the beach or cooking up some cuisine. My actual rating is 3.5.
Meh.
I enjoy this band, but there was something of a learning curve I had to go through to get into them, and of all their albums, Teen Dream and Devotion are the two I've had the hardest making sense of. I am glad to see music like this on there!
This was perfectly pleasing while I was listening to it, but a few hours later I couldn't remember one lyric, riff or hook. Then I listened to it the next day and had the same experience.
I love this band but not sure why they chose this album. Think a couple of their later albums are more polished and have more standout songs
I remember it was better
Not unpleasant to listen to but for this type of music I would expect more satisfying composition of melodies and chord progressions.
I understand what they're going for but I think the glaze is pretty hard
It's okay, the music is good and I like the vibes but I don't see myself coming back to this one often. Not even going to get it in my music collection.
It's just generic 2010s indie pop. A couple of tracks stand out but it's nothing out of the ordinary. It reminded me of Little Talks by Of Monsters and Men, and I'd rather listen to that. The thing is I hate that song.
sub. pop, 2010 -> 3
not the biggest fan of like ambient or dream pop but it’s cool
2010s indie is usually an auto 5/5 for me and I like the sound but the album felt soulless. There was no passion or love that shone through.
Why is all the 00s and 10s stuff we've had such miscellaneous indie wallpaper? I was a sentient being in 2010 and can attest there was loads of stuff way more interesting than this.
I’ve decided dreamy pop perhaps isn’t really my sort of thing. I mean its alright but just isn’t very exciting is it. But then maybe that’s the point of it, it’s not supposed to be exciting? So now I’m not sure, perhaps it is quite good. But still probably not one I’ll be listening to again in a hurry so back to where I started.
2.6 - Not sure why its on the list sorry
Inoffensive but unambitious.
Very 2010 indie. A bit dreamy, maybe a bit too laid back to my taste. But good nevertheless. 3.3
I honestly never understood the hype on Brach House, but I also never listened to this album. I mean, it is an Ok album, quite cohesive and the minimal dreampop instrumental is spot on, and good to have on the background, however, the singing of the vocalist is so 2010 coded it brings me backt to that time that I felt all the songs were sung the same way. . I understand why the album was considered good, bit it is not good enough for my personal list. 3/5
Baltimore represent! Never heard of these guys though, so interested to give it a listen. While this isn't my favorite style, there's some cool stuff here. It's a bit subdued for me, but I like the dreamy synth sound in general. I really like stuff like the weirdly discordant "bendy" sounds in "Norway." Standouts for me were "Norway" and "Better Times" Overall, it's a little sleepy for me. Nothings really bad here, but nothing pushes it up above average. 3/5 stars.
Kinda interesting ambient music. Not quite lofi, but we were getting there in 2010
Didn’t vibe with this one
Favorite Track: Silver Soul
It was fine. It was a typical indie rock album. No songs stood out though.
Sounds like a millennial reboot of Mazzy Star. I don’t hate it. But was never really a fan of the “original” in this case, either.
Definitely influenced by Kate Bush. Decent music for a montage or an end credits crawl. Too long for me.
Not bad. Kinda boring.
It was okay, nothing groundbreaking for me.
#25 Teen Dream ~ Beach House Well it's very pretty music I must say. The tunings and recording of guitars done in this album is very impressive. The piano, organ and synths are charming. I just find myself wanting more. Something is just lacking in the sound of the album. It bothers me a bit; I feel as if I'm longing for something from this album. But I'm getting withheld climaxes. Maybe this is just me. I must say though, Victoria Legrand has a very pretty voice whose sombre, melancholic tone fits very well to the layers of crystalline guitars and synths in the background. They catch onto her bittersweet lyrics, as if captured memories and on songs like 10 Mile Stereo, she can really belt to something resembling a climax: a catharsis. Actually this voice reminds me of Adele, and I like Adele. Perhaps that's why I'm drawn leftfield by the songs of Teen Dream, as instead of a usual Adele belt, I'm left with an echo of harmonies before the climax. It's pretty. Maybe I'll get it. But not now.
This was right up my alley in 2010. I still love “Take Care” in particular but it’s lost some of that dream pop shine over the past 15 years.
I listened to indie rock in the 00's so yeah, I've listened to this album. It's okay. (39 known/81 new)
I wanted to like this more than I did sadly. I think when they are good they are great but they aren’t always good. A bit repetitive also
Really good arrangement and execution. This isn't typically my vibe, but I dug it.
Not my favorite album but do love them
I suppose the problem is that I only listened to this after hearing the sublime 7. Sorry, guys.
Lush and washy. Was very impressed by the vocals. A beautiful timbre and texture. Really thought I was going to hate it during the first two tracks, then got into it, but lost it again by the end. Would play again in a background situation
I liked parts of this a lot, but it started to just drone on by the end. It doesn't help that my piece of shit ex-wife loved this band. I certainly don't think I needed to hear this before I died. 3/5 Highlights: Zebra Walk In The Park
Very ethereal and airy/dreamy quality to this album. Felt very soothing and peaceful to listen to. A little uneven and samey from song to song, but decent to close your eyes and listen to on the whole. Top tracks: Silver Soul, Used to Be, Better Times
Pre-listening thoughts: I am curious for this one! A 2000s pick that I’ve heard of, crazy Post/during listening thoughts: this was decent! I don’t think dreamy-pop is really my genre, moves a bit too slow for my taste. There are some great instrumentals here though, but yeah I just can’t see myself revisiting this often. 6/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: Silver Soul, Lover of Mine, Take Care Least fav tracks: I guess I didn’t dislike any of this per say but overall it was just mushy
Super laid back / dreamy, kann man gut mal hören. Allerdings ist jetzt auch nichts dabei, was heraussticht, aber ist in dem Rahmen definitiv in Ordnung 3-4/5
3,5/5 need to finish it
Really wanted to like this more, as there are some incredible tunes here, but to be honest I was bored through most of it and the albums feels very one note. Still, a song like "10 Mile Stereo" keeps this to at least a 3 no matter what
I liked this
Very pleasant. Chilled out Radiohead
Dreamy indie pop not as good as I remember but still good 3.5*
3.5/5
High quality boring album
Very dreamy and slow. Nice melodies
spacey, ethereal goodness. just what you'd want from this band.
Love a dreamy Beach House track, though they all do blend together on this one, no particular standouts. Have to be in the right mood for a full album of this.
Trodde jag skulle gilla detta mer. Soundet är generellt rätt. Men det blir för mycket mellanmjölk. Småputtrande och helt ok. Men inte mer.
Started off catching my interest but faded as it went along. Bit sameish
Pretty dreamy and ethereal, but nothing that feels particularly unique. Not bad though.
This album was pleasant to listen to, it was well put together, and the vibe from this band is one I can get with. That said, I don't see myself seeking this music out, and some of the album felt like it blended together. It's a fine album by a fine artist. It's very calming, but that's not always what I'm looking for.
Pretty unmemorable indie pop, still had a lovely sound but every song was more or less the same
I liked this a lot more than I expected I would. A lot of adjacent stuff feels whiny, pretentious or overly earnest, but this felt playful without being frivolous. I liked just about all the music and vocals. Good stuff. I'd probably give it another star on the right day.
I liked it! Added the lead track to my music. 6.5/10
Some nice sounds, but overall mostly generic.
It’s a mood. By no means bad, but very limiting by that very specific mood. Solid background.
Someone in one of the reviews said this album is like floating in a pool of honey and I totally get what they mean now. Relaxing and such a very specific vibe. I liked it more than I thought I would.
Decent.
Seems quote peaceful and enjoyable but didn't resonate with me.
depression cherryn space song joka on tämän artistin parhaista kappeleista kaikki joka on hyvää tässä albumissa soi yhdessä kappaleessa. Katsotaan innolla onko tätä albumia listalla haha ei varmaan haha.
Not so bad. Not so good. Just an indie album to listen to in a cold day. 3 stars
48 minutes of feeling sad and questioning my life choices. Pretty good album overall, mid experience
Pretty chill
I like this more than I thought I did. Will revisit.
Listened to it twice, and def appreciated it more the second time around. My biggest knock against it is that so many songs sound the same and I think it can be shorter. I think there sound is really unique but also polished, which made me go back and listen again. The he dreamy production style was really nice to listen to and the singers really added another layer to that soundscape. Gonna give it a 3.0/5, the redundancy of it was kinda hard to get past. Fav song: take care
A bit twee
I found it a bit boring at times
Again…who…what? Another never heard of ‘em before album. And if I do? Meh. Wish I could give half stars. 2.5 would be it.
This was surprisingly delightful
good but they get WAY BETTER
This is a good album but nowhere near as good as the critics say it is. The sonic landscape is reliably in shoegaze, dream pop neo-psychedelia territory but it doesn’t do any of it well enough to justify the extraordinary levels of hype which surround this album. It’s big on atmosphere but very low on bandwidth and virtually devoid of melody. Good but frankly not *that* good.
Ok vibe. Arcade firey
Mellow hipster new folky type thing which is very pleasant…
Not a bad listen, though some of it was pretty boring/wallpaper (and not in a fun, ambient way). Not offensive, just not a standout indie album. 3/5
meh
feeling like a fly encased in syrup. I think I like beach house in flashes, this is a great album for days that stretch like taffy and sunburn your knees. Also, a connector for us all-- silver soul is sampled in another 1001 album alums work: kendrick Lamar's money trees. u should go check it out :)
Great album to play in a room down the hall while you take a nap on the living room couch.
Pretty good, solid vocals and chill 3.5
Melange
Pretty good but nothing outstanding
I never was into them because they felt really smug about their schtick. Listening to it now I've mellowed out and this sounds a bit more up my alley. It still gets a bit repetitive and dull but not as bad as I remember.
Pop -y
Dreamy lyrics. Low key rock
Lindo? Si. Memorable? Lo dudo. No pude evitar sentir una Siouxsie vieja en la voz, pero debe ser que ya la escuche demasiado. Nota: 3.5
Another not sure. I liked it generally but I'm not sure if it has staying power in my life or not yet.
Synes det lyder godt men også som alt muligt andet 10'er indie :( sorry boys
Not bad, but just nothing to get too excited about and not exactly Enoesque either in terms of reaching true art rock status. It’s likably tuneful and dreamy, like a warm blanket, though not a particularly luxurious one with a high-thread count. One also finds the band's name quite at odds with the wintry effects of most of the band's music. All the bands they’re naturally compared to – older and contemporary – are better. It way flatters them to say it’s like Velvet Underground at its quietest (or on a rainy-weekend Percocet binge). Mazzy Star and Slowdive and Cocteau Twins and Mojave 3 were all more polished and sophisticated (and by some distance, one must add). And give one a break on any comparison to My Bloody Valentine. More recently Jay Som and Japanese Breakfast and Wild Nothing are more dynamic and/or varied. And are they any better than the xx, their exact contemporaries? And how many people can really tell them apart? One would guess not too many and having never seen them in the same room, one can’t say for certain that they’re not the same band. Vocals are a tad stiff. The hipness factor takes a hit, too, not just because of the Casio-esque keys and the many paint-by-numbers melodies, but also because “Used to Be” seems on the verge of morphing into America’s “Ventura Highway.” Still, one’s generally okay with any act exploring the droney, dreamy side of pop music and maybe they deserve some credit, but not too much, for bridging these eras. When it’s this valium-rich and iron poor, dream pop gets awfully close to being a sleep aid
chill
Just a bit mid, really. I think every song is about a minute too long, and the electronic drums just makes it sound a bit bland. Maybe one step up from landfill indie. Could’ve been replaced by almost any other 2010s indie album and it’d be a step up.
