Teen Dream

I listened to this during a long drive. Blue skies with the odd puffy white cloud, trees flying by. I was feeling it at first but it quickly felt like I was listening to the same song repeatedly from a slightly different universe. Nice music, but didn't do much for me.

Firstly I forgot how amazing this album is. Secondly this one played a big part in forming my music taste very early on so I have to give it a 5 even if the second half is a little less perfect than the first tracks

I saw Beach House live the year that this album came out. I'm a huge sub pop fan, and this style is right in my sweet spot. I listened to this frequently when it was new, but hadn't for a few years. It still sounds great to my ear.

Really enjoyed this as well! I’m more familiar with Depression Cherry but this is as good as that one. Beach House is another band I take for granted, will probably be on a bit of a kick now.

I liked this alright. Wouldn’t be mad if another of theirs came up.

I have never heard the term "Dream Pop" before. It does veer a bit into shoegaze which is NOT my favorite genre of music at all. But I think the vocals have more to do with that than anything, and I was digging on the vocals here. I liked how they worked on this album, it's a pretty good intro for the band, it gives you a good idea of what to expect of them. A number of tracks did start to sound same-y. That's always a bit of a problem for these albums. But still, it was good for what it was, I don't know if it's something I will come back to. Top tracks: "Zebra," "Take Care"

More dream pop? I'm not sure what sets this album apart so much from others in the genre I why it was so critically acclaimed when released. I don't find Victoria Legrand's vocals all that appealing and I don't find her or Alex Scally's playing all that noteworthy. I listened to the album once and thought I should give it another go. But as soon as I went back to the opener Zebra I was a bit turned off. Better Times and maybe Real Love were the only songs I really cared to listen to for any length of time. Overall, not awful. But kind of bland.

I found this album pretty boring, so I decided to check out some YouTube videos to find out what the fuss was. Saw live videos of Space Song and Myth and was so much more impressed with the band. Unfortunately, this album didn't draw me in. All the songs have the same exact dreamy pop-light sound. Pleasant but boring (and I really didn't like the detuning effects in Norway). Liked Used to Be and Lover of Mine. Anyway, moving on.

Another from my seemingly large collection of "albums from the 2000s I own but have never listened to". And it's quite good! Somewhere between Arcade Fire and Fleet Foxes, with the washed-out vocal/guitar/organ sound characteristic of that period. I bet Mark is unimpressed

Dreamy

low-register female vocals, sliding guitar notes, layers of melody and instrumentation, and an effort to evoke nostalgia in the listener make Teen Dream a wonderful mood album. obviously Beach House uses reverb well, obviously the mood leans on descriptors like Dreamy and Ethereal, obviously repetition is one of their primary songwriting tricks. it is a fair criticism to say most Beach House songs sound similar. Actually play out some of the guitar parts to these songs though and you will find the key to what makes these solid tracks: most of BH translates very well to acoustic guitar. most great shoegaze/dream pop does and most bad shoegaze/dream pop does not. at its core shoegaze is rock musics premier guitar-focused genre. it is the genre where guitar is the true "frontman" of the music. With all that said, I don't love this album really. It's full of songs that I wouldn't skip on a playlist but also probably wouldn't seek out on my own. Their next two albums are much more melodically rich in my opinion while this one sets a nice stage for what they will deliver.

Well, that was just beautiful. My relationship with Beach House is mainly live music. I’ve seen them 3 times and each time the moment destroyed me. They are that good. Is this really their only album on the list?

On the nose given the album name, but this album really was dreamy. I love songs that make me feel like I'm floating.

Potentially one of the albums I have listened to most in my life. This came out my Junior year of college, while I was unironically hosting a radio show and trying to get everyone I knew to listen to my playlists. There's something so warm and gooey about Teen Dream. It fully envelopes you, holding you close, making you daydream. I wouldn't be my self if I didn't give it a perfect score. 5/5

Nice dreamy soundscape

Beach House knows how to make gorgeous music and Teen Dream is peak beauty the Baltimore grown band. It doesn’t get much better than Legrand’s vocals, she delivers such a strong performance on Teen Dream. Between this and Bloom, it’s difficult to choose but either could easily stand as the best dream pop album of the the past 30yrs. So good 5 stars

I hadn’t heard of Beach House before, so it surprised me when I opened Apple Music to find many curated Beach House playlists. The music reminded me of independent films of the noughties. It wouldn’t surprise me if I was to look at the Juno soundtrack and find something from this album there. I didn’t mind this album, but it felt it to be much more ambient than I’d have liked.

I have a filling this was dinner party listening, non intrusive in the background.

Interesting album. Went in completely blind and was thoroughly pleased. This album has a melancholic/feel good vibe to it. I know that is almost a contradictory statement but that's the best description I could describe this record with. Not as shoe gazey as other shoe gaze records that I've heard, and I think that's an alright thing. No shade to shoe gaze... But this band, compromised of 2 multi instrumentalist members (this record does have guest musicians) really set a tone with honest writing and compositions. Not a long record, but I did think there was a bit of repetition in this record. Some songs sound similar to others.

I remember walking down La Cienaga around 2010, 2011 during a Fashion Week block party and seeing these two jamming this album in front of some store. Cut to 2023 watching them play the same album at the Greek. Good stuff.

Sure, maybe it's very same-y throughout, all the songs are a similar tempo and style. But everything here is like a warm hug around your ears. Beautiful voice and melodies throughout, if it gets you in the right mood this would be just perfect.

New to me, I expect it feels a bit more comfortable after a few runs but I enjoyed the playful use of melodies in the song writing and thought the sound was pleasant overall.

I loved the floaty feel of this album! Out of all the albums so far that were completely new to me, I think this one might be my favorite. Great, relaxing songs, and easy to listen to vocals.

This does not click with me at all. Through my entire listen, I thought this entire album caters to those who like the generic, white girl music that's used in pretty much every Netflix series. Quite pretty, fine to have on in the background at work, but I found it hard to engage with this album. Every time I started actively listening I kinda.. slid away into other thoughts. Undecided if this is a 2 or a 3... I think a 3 indicates I might hunt it out and listen again sometime, which I probably won't do.

Teen Dream is a very apropo name for the album. It’s light, dreamy, beautiful. It just floats along. It’s very Band of Horses but the highs aren’t as high. Side A is very strong, side B doesn’t match it. Worth more listens. 7.1/10

Love some Beach House dream pop. I actually listened to Depression Cherry this week before this album was revealed. Overall this album is fine but there is nothing as magnificent and captivating as Space Song or Myth. All of their albums are still good for floating and drifting off to.

Fantastic album with a great chill vibe

feels almost like tame impala mixed with synth pop - definitely see the beach house influence on this generation of tik tok stars.

This was a pleasantly delightful listen

Pleasant, but fairly unremarkable indie pop. Inoffensive, but uninspiring. I did find the interesting modulations on “Norway” to be pretty interesting, and the first track was a promising start, but I ultimately found this to be a fairly run-of-the-mill album. Not sure that I would include it on this list, especially when other great contemporaries are absent (“For Emma, Forever Ago” or “Modern Vampires of the City” come to mind as more consequential and inventive albums from around the same time). I’ve been vacillating between 2 or 3 stars, and think I’ll settle on 3 as I can see this being an album I put on when I want to calm myself, so that’s worth something.

Steady - decent listen.

I thought I liked this band but I had them confused with something else. I don’t like this band.

It makes sense what many of these albums are on this list, even if they aren’t my personal taste. This, however, makes no sense. It is so bland it makes rice cakes interesting. It is at best background noise, but mostly it’s sleep inducing. Which I guess is good if you’re an insomniac.

Atmospheric indie-like pop music. It's alright for what it is, but I'd have to be in a mood for it.

According to Wikipedia, this album was critically acclaimed. I'm not sure why. It's alright, but nothing about it moves me physically or emotionally.

Such a step up from their previous albums. It feels like one very long song. Not sure if this is my favorite beach house but has to be up there. Rating: 4.5

This is a good album. I didn’t know I’d be into this type of dream pop or shoegaze, but I’d say I am. Victoria Legrand’s vocals just make me feel like I’m floating, and everything is very Cocteau-Twins-ish (from what I’ve heard of Cocteau Twins’ songs). This album definitely has a lot of strong suits: “10 Mile Stereo”’s metaphor of a heart represented by a rock, “Used to Be” and its almost folky sounding instrumental, and the sneak disses on material wealth with “Norway”. This album definitely deserves a 91% and a 4.55/5.

Beach House is described as, Dream indie-Pop and this accurately describes their music. Their music has a beautiful, dreamy quality to it, while at the same time many of the songs go one step further and lulls you to sleep. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, the music is comfortable, non-offensive and easy to listen to with layered depth of synths and cool, breezy vocals. This isn't music to impress your friends or annoy your neighbors you hate, but it might be best listened to on headphones or while your chilling with friends while drifting off to sleep drinking wine. This music will speed up the process, hopefully with a smile on your face while you Teen Dream and enjoy Victoria's soothing voice...

A chill album that's pretty good. I was impressed when I heard Beach House's "Space Song" on "Depression Cherry". Like that song, "Teen Dream" is a fantastic masterpiece. The vocals are awesome and fit with the tone of the album. I seem to keep getting recommended great records like this.

Chill summer pop. Band's name and album title all fit the vibe very well. Easily could listen to this on the beach. There's a rich thickness to the music as well that goes beyond a casual listen. While some reviews wrote about it doing nothing special, not every album needs to re-write history.

This time around I looked at previous reviews before submitting my own. I noticed that the most commonly used word to describe Beach House is "nice" -- appearing nearly 100 times as of this date. And I agree. The music is nice ... maybe too nice.

I liked this more than I should have. I know it's not the most complex, intricate music, but the dreamy feel was really quite perfect at times. Even though plenty of music of this genre makes me cringe I enjoyed this

This was so ridiculously up my street, it's completely unfathomable that I didn't know it better already. Its sound is so pure, so emotive and very, very creative. It reminded me quite a bit of Veckatamist, by Grizzly Bear, that must have come out at the same time, but was definitely better. One of the finds of the project so far for me, and something I'll listen to again and again and again.

i always come back to beach house in times like these when i am nostalgic/grieving things in my life. was very happy to see this amazing album here. talk about beauty in music and u have to talk about beach house. this album and this group means so much to me,, i've been listening to their stuff since i was 12. how can a melodramatic teenager not fall in love with their pearly synths, victoria legrand's luminous voice, the lush drums and alex scally's shimmering guitar. i don't listen to a lot of the dream pop and shoegaze that i was really into in middle school, but beach house persists because their music is persistent- this album has not aged at all in 14 years and i think i will be listening to it 10 years from now as well. makes me think of playing in the evening along the sandy river, walking barefoot on the road under the midnight sun, dancing alone in my bedroom. 9/10, fav tracks: zebra, silver soul, walk in the park, norway, take care

I liked this when it came out. I was into Indie Rock /Pop a lot back then. Don't know if it appeals to me anymore, but there's good stuff in there 2.5/5

Decent album, all kinda sounds the same, but a good vibe and easy listening. Good background music.

Never been the biggest fan of "Indie Pop" and this record is a great example of why. For what it is, I respect the effort and talent that creating something like this requires, but to me it sounds like a lot of the same. The songs all melt together, nothing really stands out, and there's just not a lot of variety in the sound.

Nice not crucial

When this came out, I was at a stage of life that wanted higher energy. So these relaxing thumps didn't really land with me. But they do today,

I love "Take Care" but I really have so much trouble distinguishing one song from the next throughout the rest of the album... don't understand why this is considered so exceptional.

It's funny to get this album directly after G.K.M.C. as the song Silver Soul is the sample used in Money Trees by Kendrick. I really like Beach House and this album, but it's the middle child between their two better albums.

All the songs were just okay, none really captivated me.

Not bad, for me mostly good as background music. It all sounds pretty much the same.

I can't help but feel like Beach House were a 'flavor of the week' kind of band. Pleasant enough to listen to and maybe something you can briefly get very excited about. But longer term, it's kind of forgettable. I really liked 'Norway' and 'Real Love'. The rest is sort of nice and calming background music. Nothing wrong with that but there's also not a lot to hold onto unfortunately. I remember these guys having their moment about a decade ago. I see it but can't imagine them being anyone's all time favorite band.

Kind of one dimensional but I can see where this would fit some moods/situations. Reminds me of relaxing music you would hear in a waiting room, spa , or meditation space. A high 2, but closer to 3 than 2.5 so I’ll round up.

Honestly, this was a bore and totally uneventful. Maybe “dream pop” is just not the genre for me, but nothing at all about this album caught my interest. Maybe something I’d put on as background noise to fall asleep? Is that why it’s called dream pop?

It's like eating cotton candy in musical form. This is the 2010 versions of dream-pop and I think that is what makes it a must-hear. I understand how this music can just seem in the background and there is a "sameness" of sound, but these grow on you. This is one of my favorite dream-pop albums and the first six songs are absolutely grand with "Take Care" ending the album off on a strong note. Come on, the synth on "Walk in the Park" is just a great sound. The whole album is like sleeping on a cloud while happy sounds cover up the sad lyrics behind the music. I really like Beach House and this album is the reason why. Probably one of my favorite albums of the 2000's.

I’ve only heard songs here and there over the years from Beach House and always found them enjoyable. Listening to their album front to back confirmed for me that their whispy, dreamy synth rock remains pleasant, yet strangely forgettable. This album will probably find its way into my background music catalogue.

Love to see this on the list. Super dreamy album indeed, great sonically and flows so well from start to finish.

This album title was inspired by my nickname in high school. Not a bad listen but I’m not sure why this stands out in the genre.

I was not expecting Beach House to show up in this exercise. I like Beach House…but admittedly it is typically background music for work, etc. Not sure I’ve ever really intently listened to any of their stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy this album, just not sure it’s deserving of a 4*, so I’m rounding down. 3.5/5

A very tasty mix of Coldplay and Bondax.

This was a nice detour into something more modern. I really enjoyed this. Was surprised how many songs I could recognize while also knowing I’ve never listened to this album, at least, not all the way through. There wasn’t as much range as there could have been. The vocals were just what was needed in every song. The production, writing, and lyrics were all great. Downright decent. 4/5

Could be because I’ve listened to this album a ton already. Or maybe because it is hitting all the right notes for me. This is a staple of the dream pop genre.

Pretty good 2010's Indie rock. It starts out very strong, though it slips a little in the back half. If it had maintained the same level of quality as it did for the first 5 or so songs it would have been a 5.

Blind album, know the artist. Pretty much more of what I expected from this artist that I have previously heard. Not my favorite but not bad.

This reminds me of a modern version of Cocteau Twins. I would have expected to like it, but I just can't stand the singer. Their voice does not suit the music, it is mixed to loud, and doesn't blend well with the rest of the instruments. They also pronounce some words weird (but it is 1000 times easier to understand than the enchanting table lyrics of the Cocteau Twins). If the vocals were turned down around 15-20% in the mix I might have given this a higher rate. There are some good moments, but just as many forgettable ones. Instruments: 5/5 Singing: 2/5 2.5/5

Love the dreamy, mellow vibe on this thing, and the spacy reverby guitar hooks and keys. The lead singer's voice perfectly complements the instrumentals and the mood. A lot of great songs on here, and I totally get why this band blew up after this now.

When Skynet eventually takes over the planet and we are mere pets for our Robot overlords, every singing bot on Metaverse Radio will sound like this AI-generated Beach House motherfucker. 👎👎

It was a very calm, dreampop sound that sounded straight out of a 2010s indie movie. The lyrics conveyed such strong emotions in a beautiful way, combined with the instrumentals it made for a masterful album. I have heard "Depression Cherry" from this band, and I was left disappointed by that album. This however was very different and has inspired me to open myself up to that album again.

I'm new to this band. Theoretically this dream pop stuff is the kind of music I'd expect to like, but... Another reviewer said it was uneventful, and I think that's the right word.

I remember when this came out, it received a lot of accolades so I checked it out. I did not care for it at the time. this is a testament to giving things another go. I thought this album was just not for me, turns out I just wasn’t ready for it back then. This album was fantastic! I will definitely be returning to it.

Album #4 Beach House is one of my favorite bands ever. Teen Dream is when they started to become really special. A 5/5 album that is still only my 4th or 5th favorite Beach House album.

For the first few listens I really didn't find anything that stood out. Like I thought 'this is stuff I should like, but it's washing over me'. Then this morning, some of the songs starting to stick. Favourite tracks: Silver Soul, Norway, Walk in the Park, Lover of Mine, Take Care.

Decent for a chill background vibe. All the songs sound very similar to me upon first listen. I like the overall vibe though!

First three songs remind me why I loved this stuff back in the day but it lost me after a while.

First, this isn't my preferred genre. It's kind of like an ethereal poppy kind of indie rock ... Hard to pin a genre on it. But I don't hate it. Every song seems to have its own identity, they are well produced, and there's a lot going on to hear. This sounds like stuff you'd hear in a rom-com or coming-of-age movie. This won't see much play from me because it's just not my genre, but it's really not bad at all. I was intrigued to see that a song on a different album by this group had nearly a billion streams on Spotify, so I listened to that one too (Space Song). It could fit on this album seamlessly. And it got it's listens after going viral on TikTok and being featured on the show 'Wednesday', so the rom-com / coming-of-age comment wasn't far off the mark.

It was nice background music and a very pleasant listen, but nothing really stuck out to me as memorable. I would put it on again, but I will also forget that it exists?

Well that was 55 minutes of my life I will never get back. That was like staring at a beige wall for almost an hour. It was bland, uninteresting, the lyrics made no sense, you could barely tell what was even being said, musically it was a total drag, nothing happened. It was like they were trying to make an album with as little emotion or flavor as possible, and they succeeded. Sarah and Ian might like this but I hated this it didn't make me feel anything and that is the opposite of what music is supposed to do. Blah.

This was actually such a nice album to have on in the background of working. I’m familiar with beach house and their song silver soul along with some sounds from other ones and i am impressed. This kind of music has to be really good to get my attention and i thought it did a really nice job of not being boring. i really enjoyed the calmness of it but each song felt like a different emotion. i’m going to give a 4 because i never think highly of music like this and im very content.

Soporific. I honestly think if only one of these songs were on a mixtape/playlist it would work nicely. But one of the big problems I have with this album is the mid-to-slow tempo near exact sameness of every track. Also important: not advised to play while driving in a northeast blizzard. The other - and I would say largest - aspect is their very-2010s approach to so-called indie music [and yet I fully understand why people like it] the fact that you're listening to a band (or yeah yeah studio layered instruments, we'll all play along) and for the most part can't even pick out a particular instrument that is highlighted. I mean it's a slight exaggeration but ... listen to it. Not really. There's some guitar, there are keyboard lines, pads, organs, it's all very melodic - truly. It's all a wash and just so bland. Incredibly bland. This took me a while with this band to really grasp what was strongly preventing me from making any connection whatsoever to this quite melodic group - and that really nails it. Nothing sticks out at all. Awash in reverb, I suppose there's your dream-pop. I do see why people like it. It's not that I hate it, it's that I feel nothing listening to this. zero. Give me one song as a mellow break - sure, it's nice. But over and over it not only doesn't work but I've already forgotten nearly everything about the record. Not my speed; almost literally. 3/10 2 stars.

Beach House have really sneakily become one of my favourite bands of all time and this album is so so good getting to hear them a little bit earlier on a litte rougher around the edges and adhering to a sound that was less distinct but they were still capable of producing soundscapes like Silver Soul that showed what they'd go on to make later in their career. Just really touching and amazing and lush and emotional

I had never heard of this band before. I thought I was listening to Nico at first - not just the voice, but the style of the lead vocals as well. I really liked Zebra & Norway. It’s an easy listen.

Hmm, sorry, what was that? I seem to have drifted off for a bit... I like her voice, and I hear elements of Mazzy Star, Eliot Smith and Jeff Buckley in their singing and songwriting, but nothing quite a tuneful or memorable as any of those artists. What it reminds me of most is a mix of Mercury Rev and Eno's Music for Airports. I was surprised to read in the wikipedia page that, according to Alex Scally "There's very little reverb on the record". Really? Compared to what? I feel like they spent a goodly portion of their recording budget on very expensive digital reverbs. It's super chill, and pleasant in the background. 2.5 stars, rounding up.

I always try to guess the type of mood someone must be in to put on a specific album. This album is for those curled up in a little ball after witnessing someone run over their dog, getting out to laugh in their face about it before driving off never to give them or their dog a second thought. The album isn’t bad. It is just mildly monotonous and entirely inconsequential. It’s more fun to read the melodramatic Pitchfork review. “Carsick slide guitar riff?” Their writing is as meaningless as it is hilariously pretentious. Go hug your dog and skip this vaguely depressing album.
