Bra! Gillade speciellt 17
I have a copy of this album on CD and used to listen to it all the time when it came out. The songs are super catchy and the vocals are great. I subtracted one point as the album did not have a huge influence on music in general
Nice chill vibes with some passion. Good stuff from KOL
4/5
I hope you all realize the effort it takes me not to make a snarky comment about this being the third Kings of Leon album I've encountered so far on this list, but if one truly belongs here, it's this one.
Late aughts rocker.
Cover 7 Great album.
A generous 4, but I do enjoy it.
Good album, good music, but why does his voice wear on me so badly after that many songs? Maybe I need to listen to their other stuff to hear more registers from him and not be worn down.
Before listening to this album, I had definitely overlooked the amount of good songs that Kings of Leon had. This is the most 2008-sounding album of it's time.
Ahhh, I remember this album, when it was released. And how in all the bars "Sex on Fire" was blasted.
I did not want to like this album. I still think Kings of Leon are overrated, but I can understand some of the hype. Their music is good! (Life-changing, no.) I don't know how many times I listened to this album, but there's something so catchy and smooth about Only by the Night that I didn't hear on their debut album. This is the kind of rock music that was popular in the aughts, yet Kings of Leon still sound unique. I didn't love there was a song named "17," with lyrics mentioning a girl's age--because I've heard too many songs about how unfortunate it is for sixteen- or seventeen-year-old girls are off limits. KOL didn't say that exactly, but I was left with an uneasy feeling. I guess that was the aughts for you. Whatever, just take the 4.
That was so good for a 2000's pop rock album, wow. Yes, it did have the pop rock sound but it also managed to mix it with some post riffs and general post-ish vibes, which was very pleasant to hear. The album also fit well to my sleepy mood I had at the moment of listening. I would actually recommend.
Excellent
Sure he kinda sounds like John Conner from Terminator 2 when his voice squeaks, but the music really isn’t so bad!
Rock actually made it into the 21st century and was able to be a success without being shit. 4 Stars
Someone like you is amazing. Impressive drums throughout.
There's enough in here to make it worthwhile, and it's hugely successful. The first 2 tracks are classic KoL, but it then gets a bit run-of-the-mill.
Ah, the halcyon days when Kings of Leon, Wolfmother, and the like were going to save rock n roll. Didn't quite happen, but that doesn't mean there weren't some really solid releases, with this being one of them.
A good, consistent rock album with some great songs and no pretences of trying to do anything different.
LOVEEEEEEEE THIS ALBUM. Such a chill vibe I love it
Quite good! I like their style and sound.
Love the Kings - good instrumentation, good vocals, good writing - there are at keast 3 very good tracks on this one.
bopity-boop
Maybe it’s just my nostalgia but this album came out when I was in high school and it’s just as good now as it was back then. It was so fun revisiting this
when they were good
3.75
Another album I’ve not listened to since it came out. Enjoyable as a whole, there aren’t any songs that absolutely wow me individually. It was very pleasant to listen to on my drive to work. For that, it gets 3 1/2 stars that’ll bump up to 4.
Quite good
Really nice!
Otherwise known as the one with Sex on Fire and Use Somebody. The rest of it is a dashed good listen too though. For me it's close between this and Aha Shake Heartbreak for their best one.
I enjoy the soft rock vibe and would listen to some of the songs again. Just seems kinda basic tho
No están mal del todo, aunque no logran entusiasmarme como quisiera. Ruidos y el uso de ecos se suman a una voz no precisamente que canta, grita
The songs I’ve heard from this album I’ve heard way too many times …. And like it’s good but idk if I’d choose to listen to it?
Incredible vocals. Two big radio hits in "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" but I liked all else. 7/10
Lead singer has a unique and powerful voice. The rock band is 3 brothers and a cousin. Sex on Fire Use Somebody Manhattan Notion
Favorite Track: Closer
Having received 2 previous Kings of Leon albums before this one, I was very skeptical as neither really impressed me that much. But yeah, this one is definitely way better than the other 2. Much more polished, and you can understand the singer. Good stuff. 4/5
This is straight rock and roll with a bit of a bluesy twist. Lead singer has a unique voice that fits their music perfectly. Use Somebody is an incredible song that takes you on an auditory roller coaster ride. Great album!
Like it ofcourse. More than other 4 stars, but not as much as the five stars; more like a 4.6
Start and end of the album is great. The middle of the album starting with 17 was not great. If the album finished like it started, would be a top 10 album. 4/5
The last song on this project is fucking incredible, even better than the two major songs that are well known from this album. I’m only giving it a 4 because at certain points I got lost in the album and it felt like one long song. However, the long song was still enjoyable to listen to.
Hmm
Only by the Night finds Kings of Leon embracing a polished, arena-rock sound that sometimes causes the album’s deeper cuts to blend together. Within this glossy, atmospheric framework, “Use Somebody” and “Sex on Fire” clearly stand out as the most interesting tracks, combining strong hooks with real emotional punch. “Sex on Fire” hits immediately with its memorable riff and urgent vocal delivery, while “Use Somebody” builds more slowly into a soaring, cathartic chorus. Ultimately, these two songs feel like the true creative peaks of the record and are largely responsible for the album’s enduring appeal.
Solid modern rock, something I miss now
Never listened to this as a whole album, but many of these permeated my consciousness. Very of the time. I saw them in concert in 2012. Nostalgic and good
Never listened to the album as a whole but was surprised by the number of songs that I knew.
Really good. I actually thought the worst songs were the ones I knew: Use Somebody and Sex on Fire. All the other ones were top-notch.
Time heals most wounds. After a break from constant exposure to the singles, it's a solid album with great bass parts. Crawl and Notion were underrated. Minus a star for 17 and for a weak conclusion.
Actually enjoyed this? I don't know what's wrong with me.
Very enjoyable like it didn’t reinvent the wheel but it didn’t have to. Simple but very digestible
7.5/10
Sec is on fire is a distraction and honestly a pivotal point in this bands sounds. They hit commercial success and more or less ruined this album at the same time. Aside from that song this album is excellent. Incredible mixing, strong song producing. I love Caleb’s voice.
All KOL albums are good with normally a couple of decent songs, and a few average ones. This one is no different but somehow managed to propel them into popularity. It lacks the edge of other offerings and perhaps that is why it appealed to the masses. Decent enough though.
I liked.
Honestly this is really good for what it is. Not in your face rock but good music. It did continue the theme of rock albums having ambiguous songs about underage women but this one was ambiguous enough!
When this album first came out, I absolutely hated hearing "Sex on Fire" on the radio all the time. I absolutely detested that song, and it made me never want to check out Kings of Leon. I can't remember how I wound up checking out Aha Shake Heartbreak, but that was when I really fell in love with these guys. I think I own their first five albums, but Aha Shake Heartbreak is the one that I've listened to the most. I haven't listened to anything on this album in a while, but I'm excited to revisit it today! Only By The Night is a little bit short of a five star album for me, but it’s a really good album, and I thought it was enjoyable to listen to again. There are a few songs that feel like filler, and the two massive singles are a bit disappointing to me, but the songs that I liked were really good. The music and the lyrics on “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody,” feel a little incongruous to me. There’s so much passion in the singing and lyrics, but something about the music, particularly the guitar playing, feels restrained to me. And that’s a shame, because both of these songs bring a lot to the table in terms of accessibility, but they just lack the punch that I think they should pack. However, “Closer,” “Revelry,” and “Notion” absolutely crush it. I love the distorted guitar melody on “Closer,” and its dark tone feels like a natural starting point for this album, picking up right where KOL’s previous album, Because of The Times, left off. “Revelry” and “Notion” both have a slower tempo that lean into KOL’s southern rock roots, and songs like that helped set the bad apart in the late aughts when most alternative rock all sounded the same to me. The songwriting on this album was really good too, and there’s a lot of raw emotion that fills the forty minutes of this album. While this isn’t my favorite effort from KOL, I still think it’s an enjoyable listen, and I’m glad I got to experience it again today.
Oddly, I really enjoyed this.
8/10
Damn, I never really have these guys a chance but this album is terrific
Oon kuunnellut tätä albumia enemmän kuin muistinkaan, mikä on sinänsä ihme, koska en niin syty sille, kuinka hidas tää on. Kings of Leonille tapahtuu tässä coldplaymäistyminen, varhaisemmat levyt on rosoisuudessaan parempia. Yllättävää on, että b-puolella meno paranee, se on hyvä! Vahva 3 puol.
Exceptional pop rock record with some killer performances from the whole band. The single “Sex On Fire” got a bit of over saturation on radio and music television back when those things weren’t antiquated listening sources. Because of that I overlooked this album for a couple years but then when I wasn’t hearing the single as much I sat down and gave this record a chance, and I’m glad I did. It’s hard to point to one thing that outshines everything else because this band is so cohesive and complementary to each other that I wouldn’t trade out a single band member. On top of that the production, engineering and mixing is so impressive. Sonically, at times it reminds me of U2’s “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” with a bit more blues and soul mixed in and maybe a touch of the 2000’s NYC underground scene. I’d give this one an easy 4.25
I still remember hearing the commercials when this Album came out. had the album but mostly heard the hits but the rest of the album was pretty good too.
This seems to get plenty of hate on this list, but I legitimately enjoyed it. Have I heard it a little too much for an album that’s not a favorite? Sure. Is it actually hard rock? Obviously not. Still, most of the songs are solid (never mind, 17), and I had no regrets when it was over.
Even bigger fan than I thought I would be. I like the unique almost whine about his voice and I think it’s very fitting. This is some good rock.
3 Kings Of Leon albums and no Tragically Hip. (wtaf) Come on now. One thing that occurred to me recently is that I just don't know if I like rock - or specifically modern rock - anymore. Not saying I don't, I legitimately don't know. Like...do I feel like I'm tired of the 4 piece rock concept overall, having heard so much of the first 50+ years of the structure? I'm so often bored with it all. I truly didn't enjoy our first two albums from this band, and scoffed today getting this one - my biggest personal gripe with them is that the singer still sounds like he swallowed his tongue. But I have also (self-awareness??) realized after 980+ albums that I hate almost all singers so I'm gonna have to judge on a curve here... So I was immediately ready to give this a knee-jerk mid rating, allowing for the 2 singles I'm actually familiar with. But ok ok it's definitely better - varied music, and in general this one has some catchier songs than their earlier albums. It doesn't rewrite anything in the rock pantheon, and maybe I'm right to not expect that from rock music anymore. But the simple formula is done with a little flavour here and despite my sarcastic jaded outlook I'll admit I enjoyed it more than I'd expected to. They're never going to be a favourite but does that even matter - what they tried to do here they did pretty well. 7/10 4 stars
Was already familiar with this album and really love it. It has some truly great songs on it. There are some songs I usually skip through cause they don't hit as well. Kind of hate there is 'use somebody' and 'be somebody' on the same album. I really like one and not fan of the other, and can never remember which until I give them a listen
Great album.
Har klint mye på kjipe skinnsofaer til det albumet her (shoutout videregående) så needless to say er nostalgifaktoren høy her. Likevel mener jeg det er et seriøst solid alt-rock album med nok av hits - også back to back a gitt!
Solid album. I like it.
Childhood fav
There’s a hint of blues in this rock album and that always seems to be a good formula. The Melodie’s are well performed. The guitars and drums really drive the songs. I’ve known of these guys for some time but never really gave them a chance until I’ve been forced to. This is good. There isn’t an awful song on here. I may not go back to this album again but I’ll keep listening to them. Choice cut: Use Somebody
I was disappointed when I saw this was my album. I always hated 'Sex On Fire' and 'Use Somebody' so if the rest of the album was similar I knew it would be a low rating. How wrong I was though. The opener 'Closer' is a weird almost psychedelic sounding track and the next one 'Crawl' turns up the heaviness but maintains a slightly electronic vibe. I enjoyed them both and think they're the best songs on the album. The next two tracks were the two popular singles I thought I hated. I still detest 'Use Somebody' which I think is just utter crap and annoying, however after giving 'Sex On Fire' a fair listen, my mind has changed somewhat. It's by no means outstanding, but I have to say I did like it. The whole album is filled with catchy choruses, great drumming and appealing vocals (although at times perhaps indecipherable and slightly over the top almost yodelling). A very solid effort and one that I was pleasantly surprised by considering I thought I'd hate it.
Very good!
I’ve always liked this one. They were definitely gelling in the studio.
good stuff
Around the time this album came out, I was sitting at Union Station and someone asked me if I was in The Kings of Leon, so I jad that going for me. Late 2000's indie staple album. I can listen to this from front to back with no skips but that is probably the nostalgia factor kicking in too. Use Somebody still hits a special feeling.
This one surprised me - it was better than I thought. Their sophomore album? I just loved the first one so much. It started slow for me, but it's a fine album. A fine album.
• 4/5 • not my favorite KoL album (Aha, Shake, Heartbreak) but consistently good tracks with a few standouts • more produced and orchestral than their earlier work • I like Crawl and I Want You better than the highlighted singles (which are also good)
太有活力了
well, they've definitely improved since aha shake heartbreak. that album was very close to being a one-star from me, but in my infinite mercy i gave it two. this album is actually listenable, so we're off to a great start. honestly, the first half is all solid to great. depending on how much you listened to the radio and were out and about in 2008 or so, you may groan at the first notes of sex on fire or use somebody, but i really came around on the former a few years ago. yeah these are straightforward major label pop-rock songs about love won and lost, but they're pretty good for what they are. the back half is pretty much the same sound as the front half but with a lot less of what makes those songs interesting. it's all blended together into lukewarm filler soup. also they definitely lose points for 17. GET A JOB. STAY AWAY FROM HER. favorites: closer, crawl, sex on fire, use somebody, manhattan, i want you, be somebody
Three Kings of Leon albums?? I think 1 would have been enough. Having said that, they found a formula and it works. It's a bit cheesy, can see why a lot of people don't like it. But damn they write some good catchy tunes. Wasn't really a weak spot on the album.
Loved their 1st album - that had an almost goofiness that I loved that this lacks - and their 3rd is very good too. I don't this one quite hits those heights - despite having a couple of their bigger hits - but like some of the reference points - especially the Secret Machines esque drumming. Not one I am likely to return to, but did get me returning to their 1st/discovering their 3rd so I think worthy of 4*...
Love this album. Bought it when it first came out. Still in my regular rotation
Improved my opinion about their band a little bit but I'm still not a very huge fan.
I don’t know if any other band out there has suffered more from radio overplay than Kings of Leon. I HATE Sex on Fire and I used to like Use Somebody but that admiration was burned out of me because of alternative radio SPAMMING Kings of Leon from 2008 all the way through the 2010s. So I generally don’t have a favorable opinion of Kings of Leon. But here’s the thing: the rest of this album is really good! The rest of the album sounds like what I imagine those radio DJs heard in Sex on Fire and Use Somebody. Would I get sick of this guys voice and vocal deliver if say, Revelry was played a billion times on the airwaves? Probably. But I’ll be sure not to make that mistake on my Spotify playlists. I’ll treat this album like an Arby’s sandwich — give myself an occasional taste and savor the rich, fatty, sounds. But make sure I don’t enjoy too much or too often or the taste will turn and I’ll feel nauseous every time I see or hear of it. Tl;dr Kings of Leon is the Arby’s of alternative rock
Kings Of Leon’s fourth album takes a decidedly more streamlined and polished approach than their preceding ramshackle, gritty, Southern Rock offerings. I’ve said before that I’m a big KOL fan, but I didn’t think that I enjoyed OBTN as much as some of their other albums, it feels less personal and the songs aren’t quite as good as their best. That being said, checking my Spotify just now, I’ve got most of the songs liked. That’s gotta count for something. While most of KOL’s stuff is buoyed by Caleb’s songwriting, the best stuff on OBTN can be put down to the rhythm section. The basslines on Closer, Crawl, Cold Desert and even 17 are all fantastic, the deconstructedaout drum part for I Want You is incredibly catchy and when the drums come in Sex On Fire’s chorus never fails to get me pumped. This isn’t a bad album, but it isn’t KOL’s best, and while I can justify the inclusion of their earlier albums on the list, I don’t think OBTN deserves it’s spot. Even then, it’s still a four
I forgot what a jam 'Use Somebody' is. The bridge is a good lesson in borrowed chords (D -> F#m, song is in C). I played it to a metronome for probably two hours to practice playing in time. Added 'Revelry'. Love the bass licks. Should revisit and learn. Was expecting bland mid-2000s rock and I guess it kind of is that. There's not anything groundbreaking happening, but I'm totally here for it. I think the vocals and the nostalgic emo vibe here and there are doing a lot for my enjoyment.
Best album so far! Genuinely enjoyed a handful of songs. "Use Somebody" being the highlight. Would probably enjoy a live show of theirs.
3/4
Another surprise
Fav song: Cold Desert Really well written songs for the most part. A couple of filler-sounding ones in here, but the singles are heavy hitting titans for sure. Top notch production and some fantastic guitar hooks and tones!
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. There are some filler songs but overall it was very listenable
I’m sure it’s nostalgia winning out, but I love this album. The grip that Kings of Leon had on alternative music in the 2000s was inescapable, and for good reason in my opinion. There’s two hits that pretty much everyone knows, but the other tracks are solid as well. Manhattan takes me right back to my old Mazda driving around with my busted speakers blasting music off my iPod. Getting to come back to this album today while on a road trip was undefeated.
I love the Kings of Leon sound. "Use Somebody" was a top 25 song for me at one point. "Use Somebody" and "Sex on Fire" are undisputed highlights of this album, and if you like those you will probably like the rest of the album. There's not a whole lot of variation, so if you don't like those, you probably won't like this album.
Good album with a couple of great songs. The rest is not nearly as impressive as the hits.
This is kind of viewed as Kings of Leon’s selling out record, but they were hardly Black Flag in the first place. Sex on Fire and Use Somebody both still sound huge, the opening song Closer has a really cool slinking feel to it that’s instantly far more polished than anything of theirs from the preceding albums on this list without sounding too artificial, and Notion is another incredibly catchy highlight. I think this is my first time listening all the way through this for probably 12 years and I was surprised how well it holds up and how much I got out of it
I like their rawer earlier stuff more, but this expansive stuff works as well
The drums on this album put it over the top. It's a great rock album: super tight rhythm section, fat bass, guitar tone so fuzzy and comfy, you could wear it as a sweater. Minus one star for the super skeevy 17. Why do rock guys keep making odes to underage girls?
Ah, Kings of Leon, the last gasp of American stadium rock. Big hits, and then disparaged for the things we used to celebrate our rockers for being - hard drinking, hard living. A classic band caught in the wave of a changing time. I know they’re not for everyone but I like this album. In all its overblown cheesiness. I love the whiny voice, I love the U2 guitar hooks, I love how seriously it takes itself. A couple suspect songs here (again, in classic rock fashion there’s a song about loving a girl who’s only 17), but most of this I really enjoy.
This album, especially its two lead singles, was HUGE my last two years of college. I’ve always liked, perhaps not loved, the band since. As the kid of a minister myself, I definitely feel a connection to the brothers (and cousin) Followill and their upbringing. Sex On Fire and Use Somebody were inescapable in 2008 and 2009, and KOL became one of the biggest bands in the world seemingly overnight. I discovered their early records after their popularity soared, and at the time I preferred the sound of Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak to the “Sex On Fire” version of the band. When this album showed up as my album of the day it occurred to me that I’ve never listened to it. It’s honestly a very, very good record. The singles are still the highlight overall, but there isn’t a bad song that I hear on the album. Closer is a really good opener and sets the tone. Notion is a really good deep track later in the album. A very good album from a very good band.
Call me a poser, but I always like Only By The Night better than Youth and Young Manhood. Listening to it today, I might of changed my opinion. It’s a good album, it’s got a smooth vibe, sexy even. I love the opener Closer and the closer, Cold Desert. The singles are certainly overplayed. 7.9/10
Better than expected. Good range.
Better than the earlier Kings of Leon album. Has a lot of their hits. More pop, less Southern sounding. I didn't understand much of the lyrics. Low 4.
7/10- The songs on this album were better than the other Kings of Leon album. Sex on Fire and Use Somebody I have heard plenty of times. 17 and I want You were pretty strange songs. 17 was creepy sounding and I want You was just bad and weird to listen to.
Kuuntelin 2 min sitten tekemättä mitään keskittyen pelkästään musiikkiin mutta en muista albumista paskaakaan
good album, some bangers
Pretty good. A little more mellow than what I normally gravitate towards but still solid. I recognized a few songs which was a nice surprise.
A return to the form of their first album after a few albums just wantering the wastelands. Killer list of singles here: "Sex On Fire", "Use Somebody", and "Revelry". I know so many bands who would crawl over miles of broken glass for a list like that in their greatest hits.
This is the first of theirs I've heard besides their debut and it has the main radio hits. I usually find this era of rock pretty generic and while I think this album is, it doesn't push the boundaries in any ways, I still enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Better than their debut but not an album I'd go out of my way to champion. Rating: 4.1
This music tries to be inspirational. I think it succeeds well enough to round up.
Good stuff! I've heard the radio releases and liked them, but never explored deeper. Solid rock album w/out a sniff of "indie rock" to be had! They've got a unique sound, good songwriting, enjoyable singing, good musicianship (particularly some of the bass lines) and what else do you need? This is what this 1001 album project is all about: finding stuff you like that you probably wouldn't have otherwise. Feels like a high price to pay sometimes when you just got through listening to the Residents or Robert Wyatt, though.
Good album! Enjoyed it
I like it! Second half dips though
Back when this came out, I thought it was hella cool. Nowadays it’s borderline cringe - but I still like it.
Love king of Leon. This is their best
Hit track after hit track, takes me back to an amazing summer in 2008!
(reads my highly rated comment on Aha Shake Heartbreak) uh...I apologize Kings of Leon, I was unfamiliar with your game. Favorite track: Crawl
Kings of Leon have such a unique bluesy sound but with a classic garage rock feel. It makes sense that their best album is on this list. The dichotomy between the US and UK critical ratings of this album are a bit of a head-scratcher.
A good album that could improve with more plays. 4 stars or B- for me.
Up until this record Kings of Leon were a sunny American wheat field, southern rock kind of band - with two fun record under their belt - and they were destined to stay there in that space.. until this record came out… I remember it quite clearly - and this is even before ‘Sex ion Fire’ exploded. Suddenly from sunny they went too moody with gritty bone crunching bass lines - and while rhythmically they always had a flair for the off beat memorable patterns - this one was on the heavier side. But then Sex on Fire is everywhere and they became that band - and this record specifically got eclipsed - destined to never be appreciated as an album again in the same way. However with these listens I appreciated it again - it’s a solid record - even that darned single is actually a good fit in the listing - and it’s a shame to dismiss it. Bar a little baby fat at the end of the record - it’s solid tight and fun.
Listen to this!
really good. two iconic songs and a very very solid album overall. 8/10
Essential early 2000's pop-rock. Same sonic space as Imagine Dragon's early works. Solid 7/10.
Alternative rock with soul-esq vocals. Pretty good.
Their best album. Yeah it's been overplayed but the songs are strong. (Closer in particular is a banger.) The playing is solid and the vibes just feel right. I do understand the negative reviews but I can't deny that this album deserves to be in the book. Also brings back good memories which helps its cause.
This is such a fun album. I've always liked Kings of Leon but had never listened to a full album but them before, so this was a treat.
Sångaren har en något nasal röst och de ser riktigt oinspirerande ut när de spelar live. Dock är det här en ganska bra platta.
I can't believe how much of this album I knew. Apparently I used the vibe with it. And it does have a single mood extending across the album. I'm not sure that it holds up but in its niche it's solid
All together solid album. The last three tracks at the end drag it down to four star territory. Nothing exactly innovating going on here.
Great album! The only thing stopping it from being a 5 is that there are two trakcs I wasn't super into. The rest are all bangers with an amazing combination of the guitars, bass and drums. I especially enjoy their use of empty space in their songs. Standout Track: Closer
Not their best album but still love it. Soundtrack to my college years.
Good fun
Oh? Your decks are on hire?
I refer the rougher edgier early albums. This was much more polished and the resulting singles suffered from complete radio overplay. Still a solid album with the standout tracks being ‘Crawl’ and ‘Notion’
Very nice. Hard to imagine where these guys would be without U2.
Good album - I'd categorize as 'modern rock' of the 2000's.
It's decent enough. From past KoL albums I think they're at their best when they are irreverent and blunt and crude, which pops up every once in a while here but really gets soft by the end of the album, as if they were trying to gentrify their sound. 7/10
One of those bands I knew by name but never actively listened to. Sounded pretty good, nice music. But not ground-breaking and kind of faded into the background after a couple tracks.
Yk that controversial brand of '00s rock reminiscent of Nickelback and Creed? That, and topped with delicious production. Unironically enjoyed it.
Pretty good!
Not bad. Kings of Leon are like the okayest band.
- really enjoy that #3-6 run
Not my favorite KoL album, but it was my first
Good overall, one song was flat, can’t recall which one.
I love this album, It's SO good. The smoky, husky voice, the mellow, yet complex melodies, the sad relatability of the lyrics, it's amazing. If I'm being uber critical, I'll say that it does sound a *little* dated. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.
Plenty of enjoyable tracks on here, though 17 is not one of them.
Closer is great! Enjoyed it all
First time listening to Kings of Leon but I have been familiar with the name for a long time. I enjoyed it. Was really easy listening
Elska svona 90% af þessari plötu. Hjálpar mikið að hafa séð þá læv.
4 - solid album, but you really start to get the more commercial vibes in this one
I can’t believe that I don’t dislike this. A very consistent set of tracks. Fave Tracks: Notion, Be Somebody 3.9/5
Yeah not bad
I typically have little patience for indie/alt/pop rock (unless it's so bad it's good...like in the 80's), and maybe they caught me on a good day, but I liked this album.
Album has stood the test of time, and is now a classic. Unique vocal style. Great festival material.
Too much rocknroll
I liked this more than I thought I would
Finally got the sex on fire album and as I suspected it’s my favorite kings of Leon album I’ve gotten out of the 3 or 4. Sex on fire is an all timer plus use somebody and closer are also great. The whole thing is just great for having on at a campfire that’s winding down for the night.
A good listen
4 rocking stars.
I enjoyed the album, many of the songs i had never heard still matched the quality of the ones i knew already. I do somewhat understand why the popular ones became popular, mostly based on structure of songs, overall quite liked it and was fun to go back to.
I had heard of the artist but was not sure if I knew any songs. It's rock with indie flair. I enjoyed this and would listen again.
always really liked some of these songs but all together they don't seem so different and special.
Favourite songs: Sex on Fire, Use Somebody, Notion, Closer, Manhattan, Crawl Least favourite songs: 17, I Want You 4/5
Agradable y Guay.
"Only by the Night" by Kings of Leon is a great alt rock album. Although the slow tracks are a little lackluster, the hit singles, "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody," are widely known and made enormous waves toping charts across the globe.
Really liked this album when it came out. Enjoyed hearing again
jeg synes den var meget fed 🫣 sangene passede meget bedre til hans stemme på den her end den sidste vi havde
Quite fun.
Rock , 2008 ->4
Their first fully realized mainstream album, a great rocker with unique sound for today.
Ehjä kokonaisuus. Hyviä biisejä. Valovuosi eteenpäin edellisestä
Gets better each listen. Standouts: Sex on Fire, Use Somebody, Be Somebody, Crawl, Notion, Revelry, Closer, 17, I Want You.
Four of these songs were massive in the late 2000s. Some of them were so overplayed that you end up getting sick of them and forgetting how good they are, but doing a revisit many years later serves as a great reminder that hey, these are solid mainstream rock tracks. I sure miss the days when rock easily crossed over to pop and Top 40 radio! Standouts are Revelry, Sex on Fire, Crawl, and I Want You.
Really good, solid album. It's got some really catchy tunes, and majority seem well written. Very enjoyable.
One heck of an impressive album. I like the lead singer's voice, it has a lot of passion/emotion and successfully navigates that gravelly voice without being overused. The first 6 songs on this album are among the best, Closer is an energetic, a bit aggressive sound (that strangely reminds me another song with an understated background siren, Ebow the Letter). The back is still pretty good though loses some of the catchiness of the early tracks. Really enjoyed.
Great rock album from the 2000s.
I was hoping for a massive modern classic but it disappointed a little. It’s does have some big tunes on there but is all got pretty one note quite quickly. I don’t think I can go less than 4 stars with those singles though.
Couple really great tracks. 3.5 Standouts: Sex on Fire, Use Somebody, Revelry, Notion.
If your sex is on fire, you should consult your doctor or call the fire department. We finally hit Kings of Leon. I kept thinking how weird it was that we were nearly 800 albums in and had yet to encounter this band with three albums on the list. Well, not really on the list. Formerly on the list. Because the other weird thing is that while three different KoL records have appeared on the 1001, none remain. “Only By The Night” is the latest of the KoL albums to make the list. Did it replace the other two, but then fell victim to the 20th century bias of the list and eventually fall off itself? How does a band worthy of making the list with three different albums wind up totally shut out? I do think KoL deserves representation on the list. But which album? I listened to KoL a bunch when these albums first came out, but not so much in the last decade. But a quick look back had me feeling that it may actually be “Because of the Times,” KoL’s third album and the odd one out in this early stretch of their career not to appear on the 1001, that I liked the best. As for “Only By The Night,” it starts majestically. The wah/reverb/whatever-that’s-called intro of “Closer” is a great way to open an album. They build momentum through “Closer” and “Crawl” before squandering it with “Sex on Fire.” Not that “Sex on Fire” isn’t a great sounding song. As long as you don’t listen to the lyrics. Apparently that didn’t dissuade people though. That song was a huge hit. It won a Grammy. “Use Somebody” won a Grammy too. Somehow not the same year, though? How do two singles from the same album win awards in different years? Regardless, this was peak Kings of Leon. (Peak popularity at least.) They’ve fallen off since then, but they were on a pretty hot run. Sometimes his vocals veer into overwrought twanginess, but I love the way Caleb Followill lets his voice break and crack. It sets the tone for a band that feels always just on the edge of losing control, only to rein it in and keep roaring.
"Sex on fire" y "Use somebody" son las canciones famosas del grupo, que se encuentran en este disco. Muy buena canción de rock. Las primeras dos canciones del disco me parecieron un poco aburridas y monótonas. No todas me terminaron de gustar, especialmente las primeras dos que me parecieron algo aburridas.
Lots of latter teenage years nostalgia with this one. At the time felt like more than just pop rock, but it is a bit bland on the re-listen more than a decade later. Still enjoy it, catchy tunes and memorable hooks. No bad tracks, but the hits don't really hit in the same way they did back in the day. Still humorous that "Sex on Fire" was supposed to be Set's Us on Fire until a sound mixer made the joke.
Don't hate on this just because you hate someone else who likes it.
Decent Rock. I like it.
Neat
It’s a pretty good album but it feels dated! Like such a unique date and time (mid 2010s)
Almost perfect. Drags at the end
moi aussi je chante comme ça quand j’ai une laryngite
I read this once and now I can't get it out of my head because it's so perfectly defines the sound of this band: "Lynyrd Skynyrd Coldplay variant." I forgot how much I enjoyed this album. Haven't listed to it in over a decade. It was a joy to revisit. I was never a huge fan of this band, but they had several songs on here that just resonated with me for some reason.
This was always a really good album. So many good songs.
I wasn't exactly excited to get a second Kings of Leon album on this project, but this was sufficiently different from their first album that I guess I don't begrudge its inclusion too much. Overall, a pleasant enough listen, with the massively glaring exception of "17". What the hell is that? A Christmassy statutory rape song? 🤨 Awful. Fave tracks - "Closer" is a solid opener. "Manhattan" maybe?
M'ha semblat súper agradable d'escoltar. Manté molt l'estil tot l'àlbum però en cap moment se m'ha fet pesat. Sex on Fire és un temazo. Expected Lorenzo rating: 4
I was very happy with this album, they have a really fun sound. My favorites were “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody”
So this album is unique for basically the lead singers voice. Band sounds great. Love this album
Modern alternative rock. Kings of Leon started as a hard, almost punk, garage rock band and with this record evolved into a heavily produced, mainstream act. Faint traces of their Southern rock roots still persist but their sound is now polished guitars and drums supporting the excellent vocals. Caleb has a raw, wrenching tone to his voice that infuses their songs with a ton of emotion and draws the listener in. The songwriting is pretty simple but effective -- Sex On Fire and Use Somebody are the big hits but the album is pretty consistently good up and down. Good but not great. I liked the early stuff from them better -- this is more a product of the industry machine.
Polished, popular, sort of kings of Leon but without the wild lo-fi youthful vigour of their earlier, better albums. Sex on fire is nonsensical and overplayed but I still think actually quite a tune, the opener is excellent too but all in all the albums a little humdrum and sort of forgettable whereas, the first two - in the words of Vince Noir - are blinding.
Good old memories of being young
Was a big fan of this album back in the day. Still is pretty great. 4.5
A more or less Roots/Americana based rock, a sound that reminds me a little of Black Crowes and a little Coldplay in there. Pretty good stuff - May revisit this one more. Sex On Fire, Manhattan, and Notion are my favorites.
I definitely think there are more than 1001 albums that should be listened to before this one, however I still enjoy it. The best songs on the album are "Closer," "Sex on Fire," "Revelry," and "Notion," but there really aren't any terrible songs on here either. Doesn't belong with the greats, but that's fine. It's still good.
Clássico. Me faz lembrar a adolescência. :c
Amazing Album
4.5
I like some songs
Southern rock, Chris Stapleton feel.
Agradable y Guay.
Good vibe. I never think about this band when it comes to rock but their sound is awesome. Only a couple skips.
Side A - a mighty Hulk, smashing through, explosion of sound, great riffs, really good vocal, I loved their style, especially the first song was amazing. Unfortunately, Side B was a big snoozefest, vocal became monotonous, maybe because it was exposed by lack of interesting instrumental parts. I'm still very much impressed with this album, I will look forward to listen to it on a vinyl, but I wouldn't call that an essential buy. It is a really good band, I think it will be worth it to listen to other positions in the discography.
A great album. Mix of styles, and energetic.
Iconic. New wave of rock for the time.
Not being a huge Kings of Leon fan, I can appreciate the unsung gems of the album. Moody and ambient at times, it generates strong QOTSS vibes with the Eddie Vedder-ish vocals and angst. Mostly unoriginal it does pull you in unexpectedly. The subtle harmony created by distortion and light synths creates a great vibe throughout.

This... was actually pretty great? Really wasn't expecting much considering their other records on this list, but I thought this one was excellent! They actually found a somewhat unique sound, wrote cool songs, and played their instruments well (special props to the bassist for some delightfully catchy basslines)
Ok Kings of Leon, I'm glad to see an album that deserves to be on this list finally. Of course some star singles, but also just consistent across the board.
listened to again despite misgivings on my own 2012 era hipster playlists, i must admit this is a good album and the guitar tone is immaculate
I remember when this came out and hearing Sex on Fire and Use Somebody. Those are great along with the other standouts like Notion and Revelry. Kings of Leon really impressed me with this album.
Good, nothing earth shattering.
Good!!!
I really enjoyed this one. I don’t think I’d ever heard of the band or heard their music. Glad this project introduced me to them. Solid rock music with an approach that stands out as a little different. I look forward to hearing more of their music.
Heel vet!
Forgot how good this album is
Solid album start to finish.
I'd only heard the big hit but playing the rest of the album I really like the vibe. I really like Caleb's voice- so gritty. The music is pretty standard post 2000 stuff but really good rock nevertheless
I liked it much more than I expected, maybe because "Sex on Fire" was huge on my corner during my teenage years, but we never know. Perhaps I like Kings of Leon.
4.0
Continuing to evolve from their garage rock beginnings, Kings of Leon incorporates electric effects much like electro-pop and mainstream rock contemporaries, such as Muse. I'm hearing noisy distortion from post-grunge, as well as the anthemic song structures, choruses, and guitar solos of 80s arena rock, as well as tinges of funk and country in certain tracks. At the same time, they retain the minimalist punk style of drumming and repetitive riff patterns. It's a well-produced diverse blend of genres fitting of a modern mainstream rock record. Even the deep cuts have catchy melodies and stick around in your head. I have to give them a lot of credit in a time where rock was heading in different directions. Between the quality, ingenuity, and accessibility, it stands as one of the defining "classic rock" albums of the 21st century.
Great album for this list. A sort of lightning in a bottle type of album. I really enjoyed this one back when I was in high school and college. Sex On Fire and Use Somebody have become classics at this point and there are a few others on here I enjoyed like Revelry and Manhattan. Was cool to read their story on the Apple music explanation too. Glad this one made it to the list if only that it isn't the same as everything else we have been getting.
A rock band forgotton by time, I wonder what they're up to these days? Kings of Leon had a couple big hits out of nowhere, both of which are here: Use Somebody and Sex on Fire. I didn't hear of them before or after that. But you know what, the album is pretty great. They've got a nice rock-soul thing going on, and they just did their thing well. I'm glad to have listened to this because I would now say they are a little underrated. Favorite tracks: Use Somebody, Sex on Fire, Closer, Revelry, Notion. Album art: Rorschach-style art, that I really can't interpret. Always seemed like birds or wings at first glance, but I can't be sure. But it's cool, I like the font they used at the top. 4/5
Expected Kings of Leon but not this album. However, on listening again it’s actually very good, great two opening and two closing tracks, good in the middle.
makes me feel things (mostly positive)
Not a bad album. I definitely prefer the sound of this era than most others. The vocals leave much to be desired, as it sounds just like any other band out there. My favorite song was 17. Definitely a great representation of the "alternative rock" scene of the mid 2000s.
Honestly this album had some absolute bangers. Overall this is a really nice album, I really liked the soft rock elements plus this album has a lot of teenage memories for me. Stand out tracks: Closer, Sex on Fire, Use Somebody
Nostalgic
7/10. Feels like a well-tuned alt-rock album. The hit single "Sex on Fire" almost feels out of place compared to the early tracks.
Just an awesome album. Lots of soul and a solid rock/blues backbone.
Great album
Nice
Better than I thought. Solid album, especially the first half.
AJ: had forgotten I’d heard this album a decent amount when it came out. Pleasantly surprised to remember a lot o the songs. I think they’re great on this. Every instrument sounds so strong, but also shiny. Jangly pop rocks. I like it a lot.
More enjoyable than expected tails off in end
Wish the instrumental were more forward in the sound
Nostalgia heavy for me. A couple of duds (wtf 17?) but overall a decent rock record. Closer will always be a standout.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Crawl, Use somebody, Sex on fire, Notion
Even though I’m sick and tired of hearing Sex on Fire on the radio all the time, the rest of the album is pretty good!
I adore this album, but it's definitely picked up the 4th star based off of nostalgia
This album is great. As close to a 5 as it can get.
Has it all. Love this album!
I liked the album! I had heard some hits before but not the whole album. I could listen to this again so it’s 4 stars.
I always preferred Aha Shake but I can see why people love this. Crawl will always be a fave!
Great album some full songs favorites were revelry, notion I want you, and be somebody.
good
Possibly a 3.5 but did start to grow on me a bit
I feel like a big ol hypocrite writing this. Yesterday I lamented that the trappings of 2000s of mainstream rock held back a Bruce Springsteen album. The difference with Kings of Leon’s Only By the Night is that, uh, they’re a 2000s band so they get away with it? But also this is the best I’ve ever heard them, right down to the assorted bells (“17”), background choirs, *compression* & millennial whoops (“Use Somebody”). I wouldn’t say the rough edges of Youth & Young Manhood needed to be sanded over, but it works. It just works here. HL: “Sex on Fire”, “Revelry”, “Closer”, “Notion” September 12, 2023
Un super album rock assez reent pleinde jits . Un bonne ecoute que je n’aurais jama8s fait fait sans cette liste. 4.85
Ah it's a tough one as it was such a big album back at sixth form. Real nostalgia for that period of time and I did bloody love it. I haven't listened to these songs is years and I don't know how to feel about it! Now knowing where Kings of Leon came from, they changed their style a lot and made it much more pop and ballad. I don't respect Biffy Clyro or Coldplay for doing the same thing. I can't deny though I did enjoy the relisten and some of these hold up. Manhattan for example! Sex on Fire and Use Somebody don't ... Agh. 4 stars for nostalgia impact. Don't tell Luke (who kept crying to turn it off when I played this)
Heard before: 'Sex on Fire', 'Use Somebody'. First track in. This is better than I expected from the (alright) singles I knew. Second track in. Both excellent! Favourite songs: 'Closer', 'Crawl', 'Revelry', 'I Want You'. 8/10.
This was one of those albums that I kind of assumed was just the hits and nothing else to offer but I was sorely mistaken. 17 and Revelry were quite good in particular. A bit too much blending together of the songs to be a top tier album but a solid 4 through and through.
This album defined early 2000s rock Sex On Fire and Use Somebody are bangers. Let's forget about 17 tho...
An album that was everywhere for a while, and rightly so, as it is great! Falls just short of a fifth star, partly cos it is a bit samey, partly cos I prefer their rawer earlier stuff.
Multiple listens confirm the strengths of this effort and the band itself – fully committed vocals in a relatable classic rock vein, slightly melancholic undertones to even the wildest songs ("Sex On Fire" sounds is sung like the singer is in fact frightened by the fiery-ness being described). It all works well, if there are only a few tracks that truly jump out to distinguish themselves. Still, seems like this was a real rock and roll band at a time when the market needed one. Indeed, one is pleased that they achieved considerable commercial success, and would even go so far as to say they deserved it.
It's that slow vocals vibe lounge singing vibe. Definitely makes you feel like you're sitting in the rain with flowers in your hand watching your high-school sweetheart kissing the quarterback of the football team vibes.
Vocals reminded me of the lead singer of Highly Suspect and Kaleo. Like the synths and instrumentals sounds almost experimental with traditional electric guitar mixed in. After finishing I recognized a lot of the songs featured, but never knew the band.
Now finally a Kings of Leon album that deserves to be on there because it's actually good music!
KoL is an under-rated band in my opinion. Especially with this album, they forged a pretty unique sound that is somehow fun and sad and rocky and poetic all at the same time. And they're consistent - a few tracks off this were "hits" but they all sound equally great.
I knew two songs on the album, which was 2 more than I was expecting. Even without the 2 tracks, I dug the album. It was pretty good. Both "Closer" & "Crawl" worked as opening tracks. They gave you a pretty good idea of what you were in for for the entire album. Then you have the one-two punch of "Sex On Fire" and "Use Somebody". Both pretty good songs, but having them right after each other, thae makes a pretty solid block of music right there. The singer is... limited, let's put it that way. He seems to be yelling more than singing, but at least he's in key. I didn't detect autotune, so that's a start. There wasn't a song on there that I would throw out, but because of the singer's limited range, some of them did start to sound the same. (Although "17" was a little creepy.) So if someone asked me where to start with the band, I would probably say this album would be your best bet. It has two of their biggest songs on it, so it should give you an idea of their sound.
I think three of the first four Kings of Leon albums were all on this list and have subsequently been removed. Funny enough it's their one before this (#3 - Because of the Times) that is my favorite. Still, this is probably my second favorite and where I first discovered the band. I remember when Sex on Fire was all over the radio and I was not interested at first. And then I really listened to it and I loved it. Still do; it never gets old for me. Some of the other songs have got old/tired - Use Somebody is one I now radio surf when I hear it and 17 was always a bit of a reach. But I still love how they open and close the album with Closer and Cold Desert (both eerie and awesomely haunting). And Notion still rocks every time while I Want You is one of those great cheeky songs with an off-kilter beat they seem to have on every album. It's not a perfect album but it's a solid piece of rock during an era where rock was dying (and has continued to die). These guys were a breath of fresh air and this album was massive. I don't think I can bump it up to a 5 because they had already started to blaze a trail in the early 2000's with their first two albums, it's just that North America wasn't paying much attention (England was). But in 20 years when we look back and ask what did we define as rock after 2000-2002 and where did rock go by 2020, this is one of those albums (and bands) where we can say, ah there it is. I'm saving my 5 for album #2 (Aha Shake Heartbreak) where they first really figured out their great sound and were still pretty new.
Reminds me of college
(On first song) These vocals kinda good though? Wait I thought this had the quality of the top song but it ain’t? This album might actually be good. I now know why it wasn’t the top song. Turns out Sex On Fire, despite the name, is a very well known song. Still good though. Yeah this is at least 4 stars. Multiple so close to being bangers. Man just one banger and it would’ve been a 4.5. Oh well, 4 stars. Also man the first song wouldv’e been so much better if the backing track didn’t last the entire song. Its distracting at best.
It's easy to mock Kings of Leon and the whole mid 2000s era of Alt Rock, but I do have to admit this is actually a pretty decent album. The hitters, while overplayed, still hit and some of the deep cuts are better than they get credit for as a band.
The album tracks for the most part were as good as the smash hits. Enjoyable listen.
Liked it, especially their hit "Sex on Fire".
I think I had this album in college! Loses a star bc of the song about a 17 year old 3/5
This was the album that made these guys go BOOM! They were always around the outskirts of the mainstream. Then Sex on Fire & Use Somebody came out & you couldn't escape the Kings of Leon. Rightfully, so. Though overplayed it highlights them fairly well. I was hoping to get the earlier albums first but I got the one with the poppy hits. 3
So plastic. Why is this here? “Sex on Fire” is the best thing here, but it’s not nearly enough to keep a listener engaged. 2.5?
Fine album with hits...but nothing more.
Well produced, well played, but left me cold. The songs are just not memorable
Day901 - this is one of the last albums i physically bought. i’m not necessarily a kings of leon fan but this has to me their three best songs
Helt ok. Väldigt amerikanskt men helt ok trots allt.
A pretty good album, I liked Sex on Fire and Manhattan the most.
3.4
this was just a generic modern rock album, how was this 1001
Herm. I really only liked the first song. Not sure how they lost me so bad for the rest of the album. It all started sounding the same to me after Crawl.
I've always really liked the song Use Somebody. I remember listening to it when it was popular back in the 2000s but I think it holds up. Sex On Fire, on the other hand, I've always found to be a pretty bad song. The rest of the songs on the album are pretty average.
When this album came out, I had a roommate that listened to Sex is on Fire on their phone on repeat. After numerous days of this, I made a comment that we could listen to other songs in the house too. Apparently that song was their coping mechanism for going through a break up.
Very soft rock, nothing special, and it kinda feels like the tracks blend together. It wasn't bad though and it has some big hits. Favorite track(s) Revelry
Some pretty good rockers
They released most of this album, recognised nearly everything. I really like the opening track and don't mind a lot of the rest but the magic they had initially has completely gone by this point. My overriding memory of this album is working at Liverpool echo arena for their gig at the height of its popularity. The huge number of fire doors that made it apparently one the quickest arenas to evacuate were hijacked by scallies who rushed the place and pushed the people checking standing tickets to the floor to get in. Lots of changes were made to security after that gig but it's indicative of the fanbase change after sex on fire came out. Not KoLs fault but can't help tar this album as a result.
Indie U2 tribute act on coke mainline's their sweet spot 3.4
I'd like this band if they had a different singer.
I was a bit disappointed to get *another* Kings of Leon album, but this one's actually almost fine. It's sort of like Hot Fuss, where it starts out with a handful of songs that you've heard a billion times on the radio, and then you don't care about anything after that. In the case of Kings of Leon, I feel like some of those later songs (especially "Be Somebody") are trying to be U2? Anyway, this is probably their album that's most worthy of being here and most listenable, though I can't imagine I'll ever think about it again.
3.5 / 5 Best: Sex on Fire Worst: Be Somebody Weirdest: I Want You Honorable Mentions: Closer, Manhattan, Notion One of the last good rock bands coming out of the 2000s. This album unfortunately falls off hard at the end but has a good run of both popular hits and lesser known gems. Great wall-of-sound vibe throughout.
#23 It isn't anything special, just a decent pop-rock album with a few songs that were inescapable when this album was new. I really don't think it is a "must-hear" album, but at the same time it wasn't a difficult album to sit through.
It’s really not great. But this project has really worn me down this week with some stuff I really didn’t enjoy. So this, while weak, is going to get three stars just for not making me actively angry that I have to listen to it. In reality it is probably 2.5 at best. They could use a new vocalist. And I get that bands have signature sounds but man, these songs are all VERY similar.
Not a huge KOL fan but this was ok.
i expected more
