Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Honestly kind of a weird record. Sounds like if The Strokes had the singer from Drive-By Truckers. Lyrically not great and the vocals don't always gel but the big hits work for a reason. Shocked to say I quite like it

This feels like chronic loneliness. It sits quietly in every song, creating a tension and pressure that shows up in my chest. A slight sinking feeling. Detached.

cannot ignore the catchiness of this album. solid despite its very obvious shift in tone to make that paper

This album was championed by lots of my GCSE students as a source of pieces to perform and be assessed playing on the guitar and in groups. 'Sex on Fire' and 'Use somebody' were very popular hits of the time. The lead vocalist has a distinctive voice and, although the blues and Americana edges were getting blunted by a push to a mainstream alternative rock sound. It starts well enough but, to my ears, never reaches the uplifting levels that great rock music can and the guitars can be a little more 'active' in places. Having said all that, when Mumford and sons went 'electric' it was this band upon which they modelled their approach. It's perfectly fine.

Not familiar with Kings of Leon. First listen. Immediately liking the opening track 'Opening' with 'Crawl' offering a very "crunchy" continuous static riff with the instrumentals. 'Sex on Fire' is suuuuuuuper good. Two's two's my word crodie it's good good. I think it's their most popular song? I can see why. Really liked the *liveliness of the song. Holy smokes, 'Use Somebody' is going to be, no doubt, my favourite. Loved hearing the *off-distance vocal cuts in the song. Hitting all the right buttons for me. Evokes this rousing feeling while listening. Building up this slow and steady excitement I guess. It helps that I heard this song before in the past. 'Manhattan' has a nice, repeating, guitar riff I really enjoyed. The following songs are really to my liking; a little too slow for my taste with the exception(s) of '17' having a great exit to it's track and 'Notion' having a great piano separation that I appreciate. One consistent element I find myself praising the album is Caleb's vocals. I don't think there's a single track where I wasn't pleased by his performance. Also didn't know the band were all family which is cool. I do think the first half of the album I did appreciate and enjoyed more than the later half. Again, Caleb's vocal performance kept me engaged despite that. All in all, the vocal performance kept me interested and the first half absolutely smacks. T3: Use Somebody, Sex on Fire, Crawl

Some pretty good tracks, but overall a bit underwhelming.

solid, middle of the road, background rock 👍

Some good tracks. But a bit soft for my taste feels like the music they play at Macy’s.

Aggressively mediocre

KOL gets 3 albums!? I'm honestly shocked by that. I like them but they don't exactly scream 3 albums on a list like this. Anyways this is probably the weakest of the three. Those first two albums had the Southern Rock thing that gets almost fazed out here. "Use Somebody" and "Sex on Fire" are the big radio hits and they are decent at that but the rest of it is just this more straight line, almost arena, rock sound that really strips the band of what made them special. Also a song about a seventeen year old!? In the year of our lord 2008!? 5/10

Didn't mind that.

A lot of really good songs. Generally a good listening experience 3.5

Radiohitti Sex on Fire oli selkeä huippukohta. Muuten ihan perushyvä ok.

easy listening solid throughout a few hits. a bit of a gimmick on vocals but not distracting

It's a good album, but in my opinion, it's only because of the first 5 songs. The rest of the songs are average.

Pretty okay album — most of the songs are solid, average 2000s rock songs but I must say that Sex on Fire and Use Somebody are absolute bangers

4/5 Jotkut todella hyviä mut jotku ihan paskoja ja mietin vaan että mitä vittua tässäkin on ajateltu. Alussa todella hyvä mutta loppua kohden huononee rajusti

Nothing special

I used to rather like this album but it's really not doing a lot for me today which is strange.

Perfectly listenable, occasionally stirring — but in the context of the 1001 Albums list, it’s hard not to think of many records more deserving of the slot.

This thing was so overplayed when it came out which probably contributes to me not liking it as much. There’s some really interesting sounds and production, and at times even unpredictable songwriting. But I could never get past Caleb’s vocal style and never thought it fit the music. Half the time he’s either close to squawking and the other half he sounds like he’s about to breakdown and bawl.

I respect the effort here, which I realize is not a promising first line of any review. Caleb Followill is trying to do something incredibly difficult, which is write an honest-to-God Tomcat Rock Album - a *Back in Black* or a *Destroyer* or a *Double Vision* - within the strictures of 2000s indie-adjacent rock, complete with his very own "Christine Sixteen" ("17," which I guess counts as progress if the age of dubious consent is inching upward) and his own "Hot Blooded" ("Sex on Fire," which belongs in the starting five of the Came Up With The Title First And The Song Second All-Stars). And yeah, the more I think about it the more Foreigner feels like the right comparison, not just in terms of intent but execution; this band, like that one, aspires to poetry but has always really been less about generating meaning through lyrical content and more about locating transcendent sonic moments. Thing is, Followill doesn't have anything the caliber of Lou Gramm's voice to work with, so the star instead has to be his brother Matthew's guitar tones, which are way better than you realize if, as I suspect may be the case, you've only ever heard these songs on the car radio or over the PA at Target. But all that said, the fit between all the swnging-dick lyrics and the fundamentally anti-macho structures of this era of indie is always at least a little awkward to my ears, like they're using the wrong tool for the wrong job. I liked it more than I expected but I still don't quite get it, and I'm not sure there's really all that much to get.

good album I remember this mid 2010's music from when I was young and it really gives me some nostalgia for music I didn't like at the moment.

There’s a lot to like about this album, and I can see why people rate them, newish band for me

Iconic singles and boring filler songs.

it’s ok but boring

Don't like his voice.

It was on track for a 4 but the last few tracks weren't so good

Decent rock elevated by outstanding vocals. Favorite track: Use Somebody

I've always almost liked Kings of Leon, but not quite. I should like them lots, they do a lot of things I usually love and I could never figure out why it didn't click with them. Listening to this I realised, the singer picks one vocal melody per song, and refuses to deviate from it, at all. There's no variety in each song. It's really very annoying. It makes each song feel like something's missing, like nobody finished writing it, leaving a 'that'll do' friday afternoon. early knocking-off feeling. Most frustrating.

KOL are catchy, but in way that makes me feel like I'm somehow being tricked, if that makes sense?

You can not escape this album when it came out it was everywhere liked it then not as much now

Sleeping these days.

Sex on fire y use somebody ya las había escuchado lo demás es bueno igual pero esas dos son las mejores

Its ok. I think most fans of early KoL agree that this was the point that they changed into a different beast and gained a lot of new fans but lost a few old ones. There are still some good tracks but it doesn't have the vibe that made them appealing in the first place. And no one needs to hear sex on fire again ever.

A few of these songs were everywhere back in the day, so it's fun to hear once it a while, even if it is while a dental hygienist is scraping away at your teeth.

Bemoaning their move away from their old sound while reflexively singing along to Sex on Fire. The duality of man.

Yes I did listen but it didn't leave a lasting impression. I mostly found myself recognising the big hits: Use Somebody, Revelry and, to a lesser extent, Sex on Fire, which was utterly ubiquitous back in the day.

Two of KoL’s biggest hit carry Only By The Night. With the opening track, Closer you get a decent threefer. The other songs are OK, just song pretty similar. L = (2.0*s) One point for each radio hit, that actually sound the same. J = (2.9*s) These four brothers are eventually gonna have a decent greatest hits album.

3.5 really

some good songs. bought this album back then because it was cheap.

Some songs were surprisingly good.

Pretty good

ka iwie iconic aber auch repetetiv? mag seine stimme auch nicht so gerne aber vibes auch iwie??

I listened to the first two albums when they were the southern Baptist strokes, but was only really familiar with the singles from this album when they turned into sexy U2. It’s fine, fairly inoffensive early 2000s pop rock. The vocals make it stand out as there’s a real grit to the voice but this is not revolutionary

Great album that came in a good moment for music, it's energetic, soft and great to listen to.

seems this is a real popular band. Just mediocre. Good rock, but just may be bothered by the over-hype.

Not a huge fan of the vocals.

This is the product of LCD Soundsystem and Radiohead Solid. 4 stars.

id give it 3.5. some good songs on there

A solid album, doesn’t hit quite as much now as when I was in my teens, but still good Fav songs: Notion, Be Somebody

Enjoyed this album while talking a nice Sunday drive.

This was pretty good, albeit a little boring. Favourite Track(s): Revelry, Use Somebody, Sex On Fire Least Favourite Track(s): 17, Crawl

In much the same way that The Killers’ Hot Fuss album has been blighted by the torturous overplaying of Mr. Brightside, this album has its own seam on to battle in the shape of ‘Sex on Fire’. However, unlike Hot Fuss, the rest of the album cannot be saved by the remaining tracks. Whilst there are some redeeming songs, most of the listings were fairly indistinguishable from each other and left me somewhat disinterested well before the end of the album.

Look, it’s got some really top notch tunes. But they should stay as singles. As an album, it’s really grating.

Dull but listenable. Folky / country KOL all the way.

Muzyka jak z radia, nie podoba mi się głos śpiewaka

Kings of Leon again? Eh. It has been a while. Last I wrote about these guys, I was surprised that they weren't a theater-kid band solely because of a single one-off joke in a Community episode, but now that I can go into an album of theirs knowing what to expect, I'm less thrown off by their material than I once was and I think I can appreciate an album like Only By The Night more than I could with Aha Shake Heartbreak back in November 2024. But is that even true? Can I appreciate this more? I'd say so, but not to that much of a degree. I do think that the instrumentation on this album is genuinely pretty good and songs like "Sex on Fire" are as popular as they are for a reason, but I do still have issues with this that hold the album back from a higher score. For one, I'm still not huge on Caleb Followill's vocals. I'm not as annoyed by them as I once was, but they're still not my thing. I think the lyrics are probably where this album falters the most and it's not particularly close. Even on songs like "Sex on Fire" which I do like, things are a tad questionable. I think the lyrical focus on romanticism works decently well on songs like the vampire-influenced opener "Closer." Wait, did they name the album's opener "Closer" on purpose or was just a coincidence? If that was on purpose, I have to commend them for that, as that's actually pretty funny. But back to what I was saying, other songs like "17" are somewhat uncomfortable. Overall, I do like Only By The Night and I can see value in here that makes inclusion on a list like this justifiable, but I'm still not really a fan of Kings of Leon in general. Good album, but not great. Strong 3/5.

6 / 10

Solid album, but I don't think it deserves to be one of the 1001

Not bad! I added “Use Somebody” to my Generator playlist

Like it 3/5

It's another of those "meh" albums. It's ok, nothing remarkable, nothing horrendous. I like Sex on Fire but it also makes me laugh, because it sounds like a song made specifically for a movie, and not a "real" song.

I understand this is probably most popular but I love Aha Shake Heartbreak and Because of the Times. Mostly cause those were out in my formative years of learning what music I like. Still good Sex is on Fire is a big hit and other but yeah give me some of the older stuff.

It’s a cliche to say that as soon as a bad gets popular they’ve fallen off, but in this case it’s true. I really liked Kings of Leon prior to this album, particularly the album that immediately preceded it (Because of the times). This album somewhat resembles that album but with all the interesting edges sanded down to make relatively benign music for the radio. 2.5

It started off good - Closer - some tension building and Crawl had that heavy bass that rocks. Then Sex on Fire - ugh I HATE that song it was too overplayed. After that all I noticed was how much I was annoyed by the singers voice and I couldn't get back into the groove. I'm giving this 3 stars because it is an improvement over the last album that we had of theirs. But in no way is this requisite music to listen to before you die.

I liked a lot of the music, and while the singer has a unique vocal style, I didn’t care for it in a lot of the songs.

i wanted to like this more but besides the two big hits the rest was just meh

1: Sex On Fire 2: Use Somebody 3: I Want You

3.6 hard carried by Sex on Fire and Use Somebody

Sex on Fire is one of those songs that feels like a classic even off of first listen

use somebody and sex is on fire are absolute tunes no doubt you guys just don't know how to have fun but i cannot give more than three stars for an album that contains a love song called 17 which is about exactly what you think it is

6.5/10 - is this rating blinded by nostalgia? Possibly. Was KOL my favorite band in late middle school early high school? Absolutely. Did 17 age like milk? Oh God it did.

It was ok. Such a grunge-y voice that he only sounded unstrained on a couple of songs.

There wasn't really anything that memorable about it though, actually it was fairly boring. But overall it was alright I guess. I've definitely heard worse but it was a chore to get through it because of how bored I was listening to it.

This is a really rather mediocre record!

Man there is something about the lead singer's voice that I really dislike. It just grates on me. Sex on Fire and Use Somebody are both catchy songs -- I see why they have gotten so much love from radio. Otherwise, this was really just fine. I actually enjoyed the closer quite a bit and Crawl was kind of cool. For me this fell into high 3 territory that I will likely never again visit.

RoknRol!

Good but already liked the songs i liked

This is generic, but not objectionable. I much prefer the indie side of the 2000s rock revival to this more blues based rock.

I don't actually think this album or artist is very good, but I will give it a higher rating on the sole basis that sex is on fire was being played in freshers week at uni.

Standouts Crawl Use Somebody

I like KOL's first 2 albums - the grittier, bluesy indie rock sound was more fun. Once they started trying to be U2 and write songs for stadiums of people to sing along to they weren't as interesting. Oh well.

I felt nothing, what’s that? Why do I need to listen to those cliche songs before I die?

I used to love this band, so this was hard to rate. I love the nostalgia but like their earlier albums more. Favorite songs: Closer, Crawl, Revelry

fun with ok sound 3/5

Enjoyed

Compared to the first couple of albums this is so polished it shines like a bald head in the sun, big hits and some nice ideas but just not a patch on the raw energy of the first couple of albums.

Omnipresent in the year of its release with Sex on Fire and Use Somebody capturing the masses with their hooks, the success wasn't underserved for a band I had tagged as just workmanlike & inconsequential. This wasn't painful to listen to and I didn't notice the lyrics / subject matter on 17 which seems to invite people's ire. It's something I owned and occasionally revisit but not worth more than a 3 here.

Top 3: Be Somebody, Closer, Manhattan

*me buying this from best buy at 16 thinking i was cool* honestly was expecting to hate this, but i'm enjoying it. it's all coming back to me. 3 stars; opening tracks are best

Craig: pretty average Courtney: an album I remember—best songs are still very good

There is something beautiful about this soft rock tune

Cool vibe

Pretty good rock album.

I don't dislike Kings of Leon but I definitely can't ever get excited about their stuff (though I was pleasantly surprised by their debut album that I got on here a while back). It just feels so... unremarkable. 2.5 rounding up

Here the band wanted to get out of the clubs and head for the arenas and as an example of mid-noughties arena rock, it's better than Coldplay. Damned with faint praise I suppose but some of the tunes are immense. It's good for what it does and it did what it was intended to do, so fair play. Best Tracks: Crawl; Sex on Fire; Use Somebody

Favorite Tracks: Sex on Fire, Use Somebody (duh)

Some hits I remember from when I was growing up! Also thought the first song was cool. Nothing mind blowing though

There are definitely some hits on this album. As a millennial, this came out at a formative time in my adolescence, and some of these songs are tied to important memories from that time. But aside from those nostalgic hits, the rest of the songs didn't do much for me. It's a pretty solid album though, easy/enjoyable to listen to. But tbh it's not super clear to me why this album made it onto this list. 3/5.

***a good, easy listening album

Very non-offensive 00-s rock. It’s so non-offensive and radio-friendly that it becomes quite boring and samey. Maybe I’m coloured from hearing Kings of Leon all the time on the radio but I just can’t get excited by it. Sure Sex on Fire is a great song with a really great riff. I really disliked the whiny raspy vocals too, it just didn’t feel genuine. Still it contains a few good singles but I just want to hear something abrasive after this.

There’s something here, but I don’t think it ever gets fully realized. I think for the most part this album just plays it too safe, I think if they leaned more into their garage rock and country influences and tried less to sound like the other bands of the time, it’d be a lot better.

Hmmm Sex is on fire is the reason this is a 3 - not sure on the other songs. Thought I would enjoy more than I did.

just based on the fact i wouldn't add this to a playlist for the sake of it (i probably wouldnt remove it off the list though) it's a 3 very close to a 4 though

There’s something missing here and I can’t quite figure it out. This album sounds so….gray? The songs are all pretty good and memorable- so what’s the problem? The performances are all good as well. The songs aren’t boring as some have mentioned, or monotonous- they’re just- something’s missing! Somebody help me with this. It should be a four star but instead I can’t give any more than THREE STARS

Has no place on this list but I wasn’t mad at it, which I thought I’d be… MY sex is on fire??

The sex is on fire, apparently, but if this entire album was sex, it'd be 20 minutes of monotone pumping with a few good thrusts in here and there, followed by a lukewarm finish.

The radio hits here have been played to death and only crawl stood out to me from the rest by embracing a fuller and fuzzier sound. The rest while not offensive or bad, does little to invite a future relisten. Most of the songs lean on the vocal sound and the instruments are mostly servicable.

6/10 Best songs: Sex on Fire, Closer, Use Somebody To my knowledge I'd only ever heard Sex on Fire and Use Somebody before listening to this album. What's interesting is that I knew next to nothing about the band before starting the album, and almost instantly wondered if they were a Christian band (ugh). They aren't, as it turns out; but they are heavily influenced by their pentecostal upbringing (but not in the rah-rah-god kind of way). It's kind of interesting that that influence is so apparent. That being said... Outside of the singles, the album is kind of dull. I like the production and I appreciate that the band was (is?) doing rock music during a period when rock really isn't that popular, but it's just not my thing.

This was fine--Sex on Fire was the only song that stood out to me but I didn't really get into anything on this album.

Very lukewarm

Starts and ends weak, but there's a solid run of songs in the middle.

Ot was OK, but just barely/

so THAT's what the kings of leon sound like. neat!

Not really a fan of the music, but knowing that they have ties to Talihina OK gives them an extra star. A lot of my family is from there and it holds a special place in my heart.

Couple of very well known songs that give a bit of nostalgia, however I'm not sure I've ever actually even been a fan of those songs. The album was fine but very interesting.

This is their big hitter; it's better than the others, but not by much.

ok. some hits. rockish. ballads.

I like the melodies and the guitar, could get a 4 based on that but the voice gets annoying after a while and covers up the rest. Manhattan would probably be the best discovery of this album 3.5

All the songs sound very similar to me but i don’t mind because i like the ones i knew already. Very 2000s

I know this album. It's pretty good. My friends and I were obsessed with this when it came out.

Solid soft rock album of 00s. Sex on Fire brings some nostalgic vibes

It brings up memories of when I was a teenager trying to sing Sex on fire and repeatedly failing miserably at the word sex in the chorus

Best thing you can do with this album is point at your ginger mates penis and belt out the chorus of "Sex on Fire". Always funny. 11 / 10 banter. 6 / 10 album

Ok album for me. I just never really was into Kings of Leon. I would rate it less but for some excellent songs and songwriting. I am just not into the voice too much of the lead singer.

Maybe my favorite of the King of the Arctic Strokes, Leon the Monkey Killer bunch. But now I want to see a movie about King Leon.

Mainstream explosion, complete loss of led zeppelin-like vocals and not even an ounce of the screaming seen in the previous albums, still some belters 72/100

It's solid, though nothing really is great about it.

Loved that the sound is so of the 2000s and it took me back to fond memories of my formative teenage & uni years. Nostalgia aside, there was one single I'd forgotten (Revelry) but the rest was a bit bland. I've never liked Sex on Fire. 17 is gross and creepy.

It’s fine. Drummer carries.

Comercialy successful alternative Rock from 2008. Propper Brit-Pop.

Obviously knew a few of these songs, but what I learned from listening to the full album is that I’m not a huge fan of the vocal style, even on the tracks I really liked. Still, really enjoyed Sex on Fire and Use Somebody. Liked some of the other songs but as a whole I probably wouldn’t listen to the album again. Most of it felt fine as background music but outside of the ones I already knew, it just didn’t interest me that much. Fav song: Use Somebody Least fav: 17

Some nostalgic hits that I’d happily sing along to on a night out but other than that the album didn’t do much for me. There were points where I found the way he was singing a bit annoying and singing about a 17 year old is an odd choice Favourite song: Use Somebody Least: 17

Just Kings of Mid being mid. I liked the riffs on the first two tracks, but the rest were very forgettable. They’re not bad, but everything sounds samey and uninspiring. It’s fine as background music, but literally nothing stands out.

Sometimes I think I like KoL, and other times I'm just like "meh". It's almost as if it's mood dependent.

309/1089 - Not as bad as I thought it was gonna be. Some of the instrumentals are pretty good and show nice use of layering but the main singer's voice is quite obnoxious.

Surprised that there’s not one, but two albums of theirs on this list. Hearing the two main singles 1000 times over the years aside, Aha Shake Heartbreak had more going on to grab me than this, which was more of a slow burn.

Kings of American Mediocrity

Sure. Why not have this album on the list. It’s actually insane to me how popular this band is, but I guess everyone yearns for that late 2000’s rock lmao. It’s really inoffensive, there’s nothing bad to this album at all.

Not surprised if the list makers would have chosen this album on the first list, however adding this on to the later additions is quite strange. Sure I do enjoy this Sex is on Fire and Use Somebody as the average person does. But the rest of the album is like alright, but they really feel like album tracks that feel sweet, but lacking any real substance that the hits produce. Honestly it’s a good indie rock album that I’m sure my girlfriend would more enjoy than me.

And here’s the sellout album. Alt rock radio milked everything this album had (shoutout Philly radio 104.5). It’s still solid though. Favorite songs were Crawl, Sex On Fire, Use Somebody, and Revelry.

I like old KoL… if albums 1 and 2 are a bbq in the backyard, this one is processed McDonalds shit.. 2.5/5

I need some answers as to why the UK loves Kings of Leon. When their other album came up on here, I was like oh cool whatever, this is no Sex On Fire. But now we’re here and I still am wondering why they’re here. I like this album but I’m just confused!!!!

Okay hear me out, Kings of Leon are like ranch dip. Like it's fine and goes with a lot of things. It has things that standout and it blends well. It comes from multiple good sources to make something cohesive. It's just pretty generic and doesn't do a lot by itself. I can completely see why they are successful and it isn't even that there isn't any heart in this, but it's just, ranch.

We don't need 3 Kings of Leon albums on this list. This is probably the one to keep tho. Sanitized production, boring vocals, and decent compositions. It's been a while, but this is a candidate for replacing the vocals with a trumpet. Replace one of the other Kings of Leon albums with the Creed album or something. I mean there was room for Kid Rock.

Bass was consistently great but rest of this was a little up and down. Manhattan, Closer and Cold Desert worked. Revelry, 17 and Be Somebody not so much

Unremarkable. The two songs I'd heard before were the only decent ones. The singer's whiny voice gets old very quickly

Like the mix of electric guitar and piano in “Notion”. “Revelry” reminds me of a song by another artist but I don’t remember the title. Oh wait, it was a song from the same album “Use Somebody”. Lol

Better than the other Leon album I heard, good rock but nothing beyond that.

I can actually remember the raw, visceral response to my first listen of this album. I wasn't even mad, I was just 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥. It even starts off so well. Closer is, ironically, a fantastic opener, and then Crawl was like a polished but still gnarly offcut from this album's predecessor, the superb Because Of The Times. And then the whole thing sinks to the abyss of bland, radio-friendly pop-rock, never to return. Sex On Fire is the prime suspect here, exposing the band to a huge new audience and setting the wheels in motion for a sell out on a spectacular scale. It used to really bother me that people would associate this band entirely with that one awful song, but thankfully, I simply grew out of them and was able to stop even wasting my time, money or energy raising any excitement for their subsequent releases. I read somewhere that they actually hated those early years and felt that after this point they started to make the music that they really liked and wanted to make. Well, fair enough, I'm happy for them. But if they really want to be making stuff like 17 and Revelry then I won't be buying it. Their first three LPs were formative and hugely influential in my life. I suppose while Closer remains a great opener, it was the beginning of the end for me.

i cant bring myself to care

57/100. Sex on Fire and Use Somebody are definitely the saving grace of this record. As a whole it's pretty rough.

Couple of bangers but otherwise mediocre

I've always been a fan of this band since hearing their hit single play on the radio, which I enjoyed using my old iRiver MP3 player while I rode the bus to elementary school. I excitedly sought to hear the rest of the album, expecting it to be as enjoyable as the single and was swiftly disappointed by how forgettable and, at times, bad the music was. My disappointment is unchanged nearly 20 years later.

Generic AOR that will be forgotten about in a few years and will become the soundtrack to the 'Hey remember the early 00s?' retrospectives when the Gen Z'ers retire. 3/5

A bit more polished than their earlier albums. Felt like this was made for radio play. There are a couple interesting songs but most are just bland.

Only knew the two big singles coming in, so not super familiar with the whole body of work here. Hard-soft rock is probably the best description of the sound that Kings of Leon offers. The cracking vocals of Caleb Followill gives them a slight edge when comparing to the Imagine Dragons of the industry. This is perfectly apt as dentist's office music, though. Meaning that it's digestible enough for the masses and *appears* soulful. I guarantee I'll hear "Use Somebody" sometime during my next dentist appointment (I actually don't really hate the song, although it's become a bit of a meme recently).

Sellout KoL is best KoL. I liked this a lot when it came out and I still do, but it's not really anything special. 3.5 rounded down

I feel like if I saw them in person, maybe a small venue, they’d blow my dick off. Clearly have some chops. But on this record it comes across as mass produced and uninspired. Probably a result of the fact we’ve heard the hits a billion times, but I did go back on Pats rec and their older stuff was real. The vocals are where it sounds like a feigned attempt at soulfulness that irks me. Again, if this dude were singing this live I’m sure I’d be impressed. 2.5ish

This is gonna sound pretentious and elitist but whatever. There is something really workmanlike about the KoL. They are competent and skilled, but lacking any inspiration. They’ve go no point of view, no personality besides ‘vaguely soulful’. No hint of madness, and thus no possibility of genius. Nothing to hate but also nothing really to love. Simple but somehow cumbersome melodies. The chord changes are functional, more to resolve the scale than add anything unique to the song . I like the big drums and the heavy bass - solid grooves but nothing memorable. Best song is 17, but even their brand of pedophilia feels flavorless. Also, the singer always sounds like he needs to drink a glass of water.

Have never really cared for these guys - Sex is on Fire is kind of a bore. Use Somebody is decent. This time around though, found myself liking Manhattan, Notion, and I Want You enough to say this is a decent album. Went down a rabbit hole, and learned that their first album is a totally different sounds - almost like the Strokes - and that KOL actually doesn't love this big hit album either. Check out their album "Youth and Young Manhood" - worth a listen just for comparison.

This style is not for me but I can appreciate the production. Overall too self serious, kind of Imagine Dragons-y. Light 3.

Fine indie rock. Unfortunately it all sounds very similar to me. Never cared for Sex on Fire, but Use Somebody is pretty good. The rest is ok but not compelling.

Have you ever watched a Summer blockbuster where you could tell the director sort of wished they were doing an art house film? Like there's some interesting cinematography and it doesn't quite move rhe way most big budget movies do... but in the end it's still a big, dumb Summer movie. This album sort of feels like that.

Nice one. Some songs that are classic; variety and consistency; lyrical interest. Yeah should be on the list. High 3. Nearly 4

I like the hits but the rest of the songs didn't especially draw me in. Crawl is pretty cool.

Eh, I was hoping to like this more. I’ve always really liked Sex is on Fire, but the rest just feels kind of average and gets samesy.

It's okay, nothing stood out.

If you’re going to denigrate your albums list by putting a Kings of Leon album on it then this is the one to choose

I am looking through my excel sheet (I am a nerd) and I am just now realizing that there are 3 Kings Of Leon albums on this list. Not sure who made that happen. This album sounds like ever song on the "Rock" station in the 2000's, nothing is bad, but nothing really stands out. His voice also reminds me of someone that I find annoying, but can't place it. Maybe Mumford and Sons or something IDK. Never realized Use Somebody was by them, but I could go with never hearing that song again. Mid 3.

I admit, the singles are catchy and I can enjoy them. The rest is standard "rock" music of it's time.

This was pleasant enough while listening but nothing jumped out at me as something I need to hear again. I'll call that a 3.

agreed, wtf is that song 17

better than i thought it was going to be given the trash headling song sex on fire

Decent enough but nowhere near what came before it. Closer is a belter though

I enjoyed it more than I expected but it’s a little one noted

his voice is kinda whiny idk

Really warm voice and enjoyable singing but that’s about as deep as this project goes

I like this album more now then when it initially came out. Wouldn't necessarily be one I run to to listen to again, but enjoyable.

Better than I expected. I thought their slower songs were surprisingly good

I really like Use Somebody but the rest was bland and, at some points, icky

I haven't listened to Kings of Leon a whole lot before, but this is pretty straight-ahead rocknroll, not unpleasant. "Sex on Fire" is maybe the most ridiculous song title I've ever heard.

I listened to this twice and I didn’t mind it the second time through. College rock is what this sounds like to me.

This one gets bumped up marginally since it has the only two songs I've heard from them previously. I still can't understand the author's fixation with this group.

I wanted to like this but it was so god awful boring that I had trouble. Not specifically bad, but just so so so generic that it wasn't good. Is Frat Rock a thing? Because I'm just thinking cheap beer and preppy clothes abound. Rounding up to a 3.

Fine. Obviously Sex on Fire and Use Somebody have remained the enduring tracks and to be fair they are bangers. But the rest blended together a bit for me and it borders on the ‘herm yarl’ (that sound which bands like Nickelback and Nirvana have) so that makes me tire of it after a while. But yeah some of it is pretty cool.

Perfectly inoffensive background music, perhaps because this was all that was played in the Coles and Woolies of the early 2000s.

A staple of my 2000 Impala’s CD rack - doesn’t hold up great, but first half still rocks

This is a solid southern rock record circa 2008 and has a very good first half and then drops way off in the second half. I love "Crawl," "Sex on Fire," an "Use Somebody" but the rest is too much in the same vein and more forgettable. It is ridiculous that these guys are on here and My Morning Jacket, a much more creative and dynamic southern rock band, isn't. But, then again, where are bands like Vanpire Weekend and The National on this list? Very odd

The hatred for these guys is overblown. Are they kind of a discount My Morning Jacket? Sure, but they're decent at making really atmospheric, catchy rock songs. Haven't listened to this in a long time and it's about how I remember it. The vocals do start to wear, and lyrics arent always great, but there are enjoyable songs here, thanks mostly to their ear for melody. A good-not-great record that's very 2008. But why the hell KOL is on the list three times and My Morning Jacket not at all, when MMJ is a much better Southern rock band of the same era, thats a real head-scratcher

A few good songs. The rest is uninspiring drivel. I remember finding this album disappointing when it first came out. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5

A typical modern rock record. It's good but not groundbreaking.

pretty dece

I don't love Kings of Leon because any time I listen to them they remind me of bands that see better than Kings of Leon. They do have some unbelievably popular songs on this album though. I mean look at the number streams of Sex on Fire and Use Somebody. Some people really just let their 2010 sex playlist run on repeat after they fall asleep I guess?

Overall I liked this more than I'd have expected. Songs: Use Somebody

Most commercially successful KOL album, partly down to the 2 big singles, Sex On Fire and Use Somebody. The recording came hard on the heels of Because Of The Times which was more garage rock as this had more of an arena rock tone, like U2 at times. Still enjoyable and probably one of the band's best outings

The first two songs were great. I was hoping this would be better than their radio hits. I was let down. It turned into a vanilla, boring, unimaginative record that I’ve already forgotten. 2.5/5

Encore du country rock, mais beaucoup plus récent cette fois-ci. Un peu plus alternative rock, moins folk, pas de slide guitare. Ça s’écoute, c’est pas mauvais, mais pas pour moi.

Well, it's an average pop rock record with the exception of a couple of catchy rockers. But for those, I'd give it a 2.

Ok, so this one is steeped in nostalgia for me. Well, its steeped in cheap pints and idiotic dancing but you know what i mean. My uni years and early 20's, spent in the leadmill (rip) being a drunken idiot singing along to this. It brought back happy memories and good friends. Trying to look past this, its not a great album, but its not bad. The tunes are fine, the vibe is dated but good and there is nothing wrong with it. A strong three

Good album

Nice little album, favorite songs are obvious their greatest hits on the album

Enjoyable, but I will likely not return to it. ★★★

Overall album was surprisingly good

It's a fine album, but far from life-changing. I'm a bit confused by it's inclusion.

This was a pretty alright album, I knew two of the songs and it seems that quite a lot of people like them because of all the listens they had. Overall, a bit meh but these two songs made it a bit more than alright. I don't know if it's 4-star worthy, but 3,5 for sure.

Solid. Few more good songs on it than I remember.

Decent.

Really good

Not my favorite Kings album but still solid

It feels very directed by a record company rather than the genuine direction of the band compared to the earlier albums - I guess that's born out in the commercial success but just not quite as fun as the early stuff.

I really like their sound and "Sex On Fire" is a banger. But on the other hand this is the only remarkable song for me on this album. Strong three stars. 3,5

Does it sound like a 30 year old fell in love with an underrage girl? yes. Is the music good? somehow also yes. 7/10

3. Solid

Catchy indie rock. A step up from their debut, but still room for growth.

Another band who are perfectly fine. I can see why they’re popular but they don’t really do it for me.

There's some nice guitarwork, but the singer is still a bit whiney. I remember when a few of these songs were hits, a radio dj claimed that the next year we'd know these guys' names. I just saw their names for the first time in their spotify bio and they're all related and have the same last name. Should have been achievable, right?

As a fan of Kings of Leon's earlier work prior to the release of this album, I have to admit this was a bit of a change in direction...at least in my opinion. I like Aha Shake Heartbreak the most and even their latest albums are pretty good. This is the album where they refine (okay, probably make their sound more pop-y) their sound to get played on the radio. I can see future editions of this book leaving Only by the Night out. Mid-review I was just notified this is the 3rd Kings of Leon album in this book. Guys, that's just way too many. Who do Kings of Leon think they are, the White Stripes? I do like Kings of Leon, yet three albums in this book seem a bit much to me. Even if this one is different from the other two albums in this book, I am not sure there are three KoL albums that I am like, "MY GOD, you have to hear this!" It's possible to really enjoy an album and still mark it down a star or two because I'm not sure it should be in here.

Estuvo bien, pero no sé si es necesario otro disco de Kings of Leon en esta lista.

This was decent with a few stand out hits.

3.5/5. These cunts are so insufferable, it’s really nothing special besides the two big singles.

I used to love kings of Leon. Not to sound like that guy that wants to be cool, but I remember not being able to buy their first album, because it hadn’t been released in the US. I heard them on 97x and thought they were cool. This album is good, but it’s a lot of filler. Very top heavy. The singles are great. But it gets very “samey” at the end. It’s good, but not great. Give me “Youth and Young Manhood” instead. Who knows, it might still be on here.

this gets a low 3, sounds like RHCP and lin manuel miranda

Pre-listening thoughts: YEEEOOOOOOOHHHHHH THIS SAX IS ON FYYYAAAA Post/during listening thoughts: Kings of Leon is so overrated. Sorry. Sometimes the lead singers voice is like cool and sometimes it’s a little too Pearl Jam accenty for me if ya catch my vibe. I bet I could do a really good impression of this guy. This subgenre of rock is also lame as hell. Idk. So safe and white bread. 5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: YEEEEEOOOOHHHH THIS SAX IS ON FYYYAAAA, use somebody Least fav tracks: 17, Notion

Liked the music, didn’t like the singer- like axl rose doing a Bruce Springsteen impression. Catchy but ultimately meaningless anthems.

Surprised I’ve never really given Kings Of Leon more time. Like the staccato beats and general fulsome sound and vox. Yeh, this is pretty fierce. Think it would sound great live. Big sound, original and a lot of heart. Second half drops off a fair bit. First half 4/5 - Second half 3/5 = 3.5

I don't know if I completely agree with two Kings of Leon entries on this project, but I guess I can sort of get behind it, because these guys have been a part of some significant moments in recent music. The previous Kings of Leon album I reviewed on this project, their debut, "Youth and Young Manhood", I described as being a significant part of a garage rock revival that would cascade across the 2000s. Then, the band kind of faded away for a bit, their next few albums not performing very well. And then towards the end of the 2000s, this album popped up, the band REALLY broke through, and they once again were part of paving a movement, this time around what would become the 2010s alternative rock scene. Look no further than the absolute critical acclaim of "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" for evidence of this. All that said, the rest of this album is mostly just okay. It's good, but it's not great. But this is probably still their most popular album and the album that people think of when they imagine this band.

I like the lead singer’s raspy voice and a few of the southern rock songs were big hits.

So so.

Never really clicked with these guys

Classic 00s rock album. Very distinctive sound - especially the vocals. Combined with the guitar, can tell a KoL song in like 2 seconds. I sometimes find that all of their songs tend to sound very similar. I like this but I can't come back to it that much.

I guess I get the appeal, but not my thing.

Nostalgia choice only but I never revisit

Rigtig 00’er rock, lidt splittet, er både lidt generisk og med et par bangers

good sound. Never listened to them before.

Much preferred KoL when (I think it was a Q magazine review) described Caleb's vocals as like "gargling" with rocks. Yes, this is of course, super polished, super popular and not a "bad" album. But the long-haired, double-denim clad era of Molly's Chambers was better

some songs were ok, some weren’t that great.

It’s fine!

I was the peak audience for the Sex on Fire craze (and I LOVED that song at the time), but never thought to listen to the whole album. Well, here we are. A few standouts there outside of Sex on Fire, but nothing groundbreaking. Good, not great.

Pretty good

Best Song: Sex on Fire. I like the desperation and intensity that this track has. Worst Song: 17. The lilting vocal inflections were so extreme on this song it felt like I couldn't understand the majority of what was said. But, since what I did understand included the kickoff of "Oh, she's only 17", I probably don't need to hear the rest. Overall: A decent album that got massively overplayed for a while. The particular vocal schtick, which can best be described as "whiny crooning" really loses its lustre after the first few tracks.

Honestly feels pretty generic to me. Whether this is because they were early than some others, I don't know.

Not my style, but a decent one.

this was whatever, and then also there were the two songs that took over Fuse for like a year

Cant decide if i like these guys

I preferred this on second listen and there are some cracking tracks on here but overall there is something lacklustre and bland about this. It was ubiquitous at the time too. 3.5 rounding down to 3

Solid band from the aughts.

Kings of Leon get the dubiously distinction of being the band with the most albums *removed* from this list. All three additions were taken off of subsequent editions. We know that post-2000 albums are pretty much the only ones that end up on the chopping block here but maybe Robert Dimery also got a bit tired of them. What does this tell us, if anything? "Only by Night" was the band's best selling release (I believe) and produced some of their best songs. It's extremely overplayed but "Sex on Fire" is still an amazing song. There's plenty here to earn their distinction as the "Southern Strokes", though maybe they also border a bit on standard stadium dad rock. Some of the second half is a bit more interesting, albeit less radio-friendly. "17" is close to being a stand out song for me... but it's very hard to get past the creepy lyrics. While that's the most obvious one, there are quite a few mentions of sex with teenagers that are uncomfortable here. If Kings of Leon wanted to channel the spirit of rock stars past, that's one thing they could have done without. The music is good and you can see why they skyrocketed to fame (for a while at least). But it's definitely not a perfect album.

Remember that hot minute in the summer of 2008 when Kings of Leon seemed destined to become kings of everything? If you were alive and paying attention then, this will take back to those days. Subjectively, "Sex on Fire" never really worked for me, and it seems even lamer all these years later. I can still listen to "Use Somebody" and "17" though.

Kind of more of the same. Not bad. Not overly demanding.

I remember liking Kings of Leon more than I do now. Sex On Fire is a catchy song, even with it's sort of creepy lyrics. I've always been luke-warm on Use Somebody, and that hasn't changed. The rest of the album is mid at best. Its a listenable album, but doesn't really resonate with me much.

Why are there so many Kings of Leon albums in this list? This is the best of the three and it’s only “ok.”

6.5/10 Fav Songs: Closer, Use Somebody, Manhattan I don't really listen to rock music, however, it was still very interesting to listen too. I rate it a 6.5 because I feel like some of the songs were lacking after the start which set the expectation high.

Rock anthems for insurance adverts.

- My instinct is to give this 4 stars. Nothing revolutionary, but the four track combo that stretches from "Sex on Fire" to "Revelry" is about as solid as 00s rock got. - Buuuuuttttt "17".....yeesh. - Will always have a soft spot for "Use Somebody." The best track, bar none.

Still baffled at the fact these guys have 3 damn albums on this list. Anyways this is definitely my favorite by them, has Sex on Fire of course but also some other goodies. Manhattan and Closer specifically caught my ear.

Use Somebody is a tune that I never liked that much. It was, however, part of a memory of when I drove my children from Pennsylvania to my home in Connecticut post divorce on a CD that had infinite replay (they liked the song). I would keep my hand level whenever the song would come on, and when Caleb would sing that higher pitched "Use" in the song, my hand would raise up to the top of the car, and then drop, which my daughters loved. Hearing the rest of the album was pretty tedious. There's nothing much for me here.

I enjoyed this album. There are a few good peaks and the lows are more of stable plateaus. There’s nothing practically amazing about this album and overall I don’t think KOL has a huge range but they’re really good in their silo. 6.8/10 #48/1001

Solid couple of big hits.

I remember how big this album was years ago. It has some great songwriting, but it’s inconsistent.

Wish the rest of the album was as good as Closer and Use Somebody

347/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

8/10. I learned Kings of Leon is from Mt. Juliet, TN, which makes them the only halfway decent thing to come out of there. I really like Closer as an opening track, immediately added to my monthly playlist. Sex on Fire is a certified classic. Interesting parallel of Be Somebody to the more popular Use Somebody. Odd theme for Seventeen.

Solid album but the hits are hits and there’s a reason I haven’t heard any of the other ones. Manhattan was pretty good but 17 was weird. Overall good sound 5/10.

Pretty generic rock. It’s easy to listen to, and the first few tracks are solid.

kindda okay

Pretty good, some of the deeper cuts on this album didn't leave much of an impact but its on the edge of a 4 because of songs like “sex is on fire” or “use somebody”. Decent listen

I wasn't paying too much attention to the songs, but I did like what I was hearing. Sex On Fire sounded good as well as Cold Desert.

Surprisingly good, but three tracks was enough.

Honestly was very excited when this popped up. I thought it was going to be a classic album full of hits. Sadly not the case. Still a solid album, with some classic songs. 6.4/10

It’s ok

3/5 has good songs but soft rock is not really my thing

A middle of the road album with a handful of stand out tracks

A slightly more refined sound over their previous album Because of the Times, though maybe not in a good way. Was the only reason this one was chosen is because it made it into the supermarket playlist?

Only By The Night is the sound of a band who is comfortable with their recordings and creative output. It's not a big departure from their earlier releases. It's pretty good but I'm not sure it needed to be on this list.

the album was bland, generic and sounded a lot of the same. If only the album had remained as strong as its opening.

Only By The Night is peak late 2000s alt rock, for better or worse. Back then, you couldn’t escape “Sex On Fire” or “Use Somebody” — they were everywhere. Listening again now, it’s not terrible, just not really my thing. I’ve never been big on 2000s alt rock, and this album didn’t change that. That said, the bass line on “Use Somebody” hits different in headphones — easily the highlight for me. Favorite song: "Use Somebody"

I suppose there is a certain stigma amongst the musicerati about KoL. A Coldplay and U2 level of snobbery. Namely because they were a band with so much raw promise, and seemingly compromised that for formulaic rock. But I listened to this and thought it not half bad. And not half good. It's a nice ale, but it's starting to go off. They haven't gone completely bore-rock at this point, although the ennui is creeping in here and there - the album finishes with two completely lackadaisical numbers that pave the way for what's to come. Fairs fair, this is a three.

First four songs are a 5! Rest of Album is a 3! 17 is a 1 - what the heck pedo? That averages out to a 3

Know of Kings of Leon because of 2 songs, Sex on Fire and Use Somebody. I wasn't the biggest fan due to the overplaying of those same songs. But I was pleasantly surprised by this album. The radio songs aren't even in the top 5 songs off the album. My favorite song is Notion. I downloaded during my first listen and listened to it numerous times since. Great song. Other favorites include I Want You, Crawl, Close and Revelry. I really enjoyed the significant portion of the album. I do think Sex on Fire and Use Somebody are good songs, they just got overplayed back in the day. And I know when I read the reviews there will be a lot of jokes about Sex on Fire, like go see a doctor, you have a STD etc. I know when I hear it, my first thought is you have a health issue buddy and/or so does your girl. Anyway, I thought this was a very good album overall and I will take some time to dive into some of their other material. This album would have been a 4, but right before my 2 favorites songs, Notion and I Want You was a song called 17. Found the song to be creepy/pedo like and was just plain weird. Vete a la mierda hombre naranja y MAGA. 3.5

3 Kind of surprised to see this album made the list. I’ve always thought Kings of Leon were a decent, but mostly middling 2000s radio rock band, and to be honest, this album did very little to change my opinion. I will say, the first few songs on this album are excellent, with Sex on Fire being a song in particular that I’ve always enjoyed. At the risk of making my weirdest/most Oedipal comment on this site to date, my mom’s a big fan of the song as well, so a part of me always thinks about her whenever I hear it despite the subject matter. Before that though, a couple pleasant surprises for me were the opening two tracks, Closer and Crawl, which I found both excellent as well. Unfortunately, right after that trio comes my least favorite song by the group, Use Somebody. I was really surprised to see that the song had significantly less Spotify plays than Sex on Fire because I feel like I remember hearing this song EVERYWHERE, like for years. Hell, even still today. And I’ve never really been a fan of it - it’s not drastically different from anything else by Kings, but something about it has always just felt like radio fodder of the most formulaic kind. It’s not terrible, but it’s way too vanilla in my opinion to get anywhere near the amount of airplay it got. Unfortunately, after that, the album really never picks back up from there, instead continuing to serve up the exact kind of thing I expected from the group, though Notion in particular felt really familiar to me - I don’t know if it got some airplay back in the day, but it was probably my favorite of the back half. 17 made me raise an eyebrow, but with the vague lyrics, I’m going to give the guys the benefit of the doubt and hope that it’s more of a sympathetic look at a troubled teenager than it is anything sinister. Outside of that, I found this album pretty plain and forgettable. Still, the first few tracks are pretty fire (pun intended), so I’ll go with a 3.

Liked this album at the time, still like it now. Crawl is great, Sex on Fire is just played to death, but it’s still a good song. Not sure I ever listened to it all the way through though.

Sex on fire (zawsze myślałam, że to girl on fire I tak też spiewalam wskazując na siebie XD) Oraz use somebody to radiowe przeboje Radiowy rock lol Dla mnie trochę oklepane ale do spacerku z psem spoko

Be Somebodyn kuuntelin mielenkiinnosta uudelleen.

Catchy radio hits. I was completely turned off to this band because of how much I was forced to hear the same 2 songs over and over and over. Not a bad album, though. Revelry was my favorite deep cut. They're good at playing this style of music, and they are very good at writing catchy tunes. I don't mind the raspy vocals. I ain't as mad at this one as I thought I would be. 3.75.
