This is the type of shit that starts playing when you accidentally leave Youtube autoplay on throughout the night. Not even bad or anything, just astronomically uninteresting in every possible way.

Sounds like a bunch of unfinished unpolished songs made on a rush and was put together in an album.

I can't say I have heard of fIREHOSE before but they have a familiar sound. It's one of those albums you don't dislike but neither do you like well for me anyway. Stand out tracks: - Vastopol - If'n - some things - The softest hammer

It feels like an album full of ideas that just weren't fleshed out. The mix feels muddy at times. The bass player absolutely carries the album, but that only goes so far. I thought this was going to be a promising one when the 1st song was playing, but there's a lot of nothing going on in this album.

Never heard of them and I’m pretty sure I kept mispronouncing their name in my head (think rhymes with Pinocchio). They were ‘fine’ although I’ve completely forgotten every word/riff/melody. Okay but underwhelming.

I’m not bad, but I have never heard of them before. They don’t add anything to my life at this point.

There wasn't anything I particularly enjoyed about this, and the guitar work (and vocals) actively bothered me in places. The production, unfortunately, threw everything under a microscope — there was nothing there to smooth out the edges. Perhaps by design, perhaps a matter of budget and resources, I don't know. But it added up to an album I where my anticipation of when it would end was foremost in my mind.

Vacillated between liking this and then finding it bland. Was forcing myself to enjoy and came to the conclusion, this doesn't merit list inclusion.

I haven't listened to much of this before, and it just doesn't hook me. I like its elements but not the net package. I even attempted to listen to if several times and it would just fade into the background.

This is #day33 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... when I first looked at the artwork, I thought it would be some post-hardcore, but then... Yes, somebody can play the guitar. But this isn't an album I'd be willing to put on before I die. For this reason, I'm giving it a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day34.

Parts of this are totally fine. The instrumentals are really interesting, and sometimes very good. I really don't like the low singer at all. His voice is very unclear and uninteresting. There's honestly some really good things in this album! And some very not good things. All-in-all, it's a fine album. I would probably leave it off my top 1001 albums, but I can understand it sneaking in at the bottom of other people's lists. Favorite Song(s): Vastopol, The Softest Hammer

I expected more as I like Minute Men, but this was sadly forgettable.

I listened to this one twice through because I couldn't understand why I wasn't into it. I think what it all comes down to is that there are elements here that just don't gel. A bunch of interesting ingredients that never quite come together for me.

Too alternative

Enjoyable 90s (well 89 technically) indie rock. As a big indie rock fan I definitely enjoy it. I don't think it's particularly notable in the context of this list though which dings it for me. Also, the cover art is awful.

At the first sight of the artist's name and the album cover, I thought this was going to be some weird ass, experimental post-punk stuff. It wasn't bad, but I'll probably never listen to this album again. 2.4*

Når aldrig riktigt fram. Inte för mig. Också druckit för lite idag så mådde illa under trumspåren hell nah Bästa spår: time with you (VÄLDIGT mysig faktiskt!!)

My genre but not my jam

in many ways, this album was unremarkable--and even the music and vocals not being bad, only average, makes it even more unremarkable. i was annoyed at firehouse's efforts to be edgy, because it wasn't even interesting. the lyrics were boring, not clever or engaging. i can't figure out why this album is here.

Okay. Why is this album on here? It was listenable, but that's about all I have to say. It's so generic and underwhelming.

This was a very forgettable album. Overall folk rock, but the production felt a bit thin without a heavy bass. Definitely more laid back and not polished and had more of a garage band sound. At times, things felt disjointed and off-tempo. It was really hard to understand the lyrics, but that was probably for the best as they were all pretty nonsensical with stupid rhymes.

Ok idea. I wasn’t a big fan of the Minutemen album, so wasn’t surprised by not really feeling this either. Some good slap, but not the kind of funk vibe I enjoy. 2/5.

Understanding //

Ik snap niet wat dit in deze lijst doet. Zelfs als je minimaal 100 postpunk albums in deze lijst wil denk ik dat je deze weg kunt laten. De zanger kan niet zingen maar dat houdt hem niet tegen. Als je dit in een kroeg tegenkomt loop je weg vanwege de zanger. En dan nog dat gekke stereo-galmpje/flanger effect erbij op die vocal-track. Matig. Wel een gave hoes. Als ik hem voor 2 euro zou tegenkomen in een bak LPs zou ik hem kopen en mezelf teleurstellen.

I thought this would be something I was really into, but I didn't connect with the music, and I found the vocals more annoying than exciting or interesting. Watt's bass playing and tone is great, but that's really the only thing I liked about it.

The way the band name was stylized, the album name and the opening riff of the first song made me cheer in my head. "Finally a different album" I thought to myself. Unfortunately, that joy was cut short as soon as they started talking and I realized it was going to be another generic and uninteresting rock album

What an odd album to include on this list. I didn’t hate it at all, but there’s really nothing about it as an album that would make me want to listen to it again. I guess this might be the reverse of the reviews I read of British bands where North Americans are confused.

This album sort of plays like the demo made by that band in every high school that every knows will make it someday. Do they ever make it? I don't know. It's disjointed, has some decent playing, horrible vocals, mediocre production, and not enough fully fleshed out songs for a record so supplements with weird noises and "instrumentals" here and there. All in all, I feel like this is an album by a (seemingly) super new band that shows some promise but never got it together. 2.5/5 rounded down to 2 because I can't think of a reason to round up.

The only thing I knew about fIREHOSE was that they were mentioned in a Red Hot Chilli Peppers song... I've just looked it up it's "Good Time Boys" off of "Mother's Milk" and they are mentioned alongside Fishbone and Thelonious Monster, so I was expecting something in the 80s funk rock vein. But this is more folky, more... local-band-who-are-kind-of-interesting. I then read their bio on Spotify and saw the bassist and drummer are the remnants of the Minutemen, who, again, I don't really know much about but I think I listened to one of their albums because I fell in love with one of their songs for a day and a half. (It's called "This ain't no picnic".) But the Minutemen were also a big deal apparently so I wonder if the kudos for fIREHOSE comes from that. Some of this album sounds melodramatic in a Pearl Jam sort of way. But it's not really for me.

Sound familiar? Two of the three members of the Minutemen started a new band. It's good punk influenced indie, but it's unnecessary to have this album on the list when Double Nickels on the Dime is already on there. Overall: 4/10

Eh, it was ok. It was also the most unmemorable collected of music that I've listened to in some time.

A very average alt rock album. There was nothing in fROMOHIO that really stood out, or really captured my attention. Best: In My Mind Worst: Mas Cojones

The more I listened the less I liked it - it had some glimmers of goodness that were then sabotaged, often within the same song. Looking them up on Spotify they have the smallest regular listening group I’ve seen yet and this is not even there most popular work - so it’s a little unclear how this album makes the cut for the 1001 from any metric, regardless of my taste and (lack of) appreciation of this work. Will not be giving it another listen.

This was such a strange album. I didn't hate it, I didnt love it. I just kept listening listening to it to see if I could get into it but i didn't. It was just odd, I felt like I should have liked it, but i didn't. Im confused!

I was really confused by this album - I disliked it, but also I think I liked it a little bit? It was so incredibly annoying to listen to, but at the same time I could hear similar sounds to Primus (a band I love), and some of the guitar riffs were interesting, and I like how there was some really push and pull within the music - but then I found it unlistenable and wanted to turn it off, then a little something would pique my interest again. Urgh - a frustrating listen. Mostly it felt annoying and musically immature. Maybe if I was younger I could be bothered to listen to this on repeat for a few days and break past the annoyance barrier, but I'm too much of a grumpy old lady to listen to it more than once.

Firehose- Kind of a crappy sounding recording like homemade demos but It has some amateur charm. The music was kind of interesting.. It’s kind of all over the place though ( multiple drum solo tracks?) I like Riddle of the 80s Time with you. Some things Understanding Softest hammer I like how minimal it is with just one guitar and bass. I never heard of this band and I’m not really sure why it’s on here, would want to hear more about who this influenced. Not sure how to rate? 2? 3? 2.5 2.5

Sounds like a demo. Not sure why this is on the list, maybe it’s influential in some way but I didn’t find it very interesting. The guitar playing was ok but all the sounds were pretty bad and the mixing is terrible/nonexistent. Also didn’t like the vocals. 1.5

Somehow I missed this band in 1989. But now that I hear it, I don't feel like I missed anything. Not offensive, so above one star, but I don't think I'll seek any of it out again.

An okay rock album, but not sure why it’s on this list

I had never heard of this band, and there wasn't much about the album that spoke to me. I wouldn't know how to categorize it, as it went from punk to rock to folk. Some songs were catchy, but as a whole it sounded under-produced. Someone's cup of tea, but not mine.

Slow start to the album with crappy vocals and *off* timing that wasn't even in a good syncopated way. I really didn't enjoy the album, but the Spotify algorithm kept rolling and did eventually play a song of their I liked that wasn't on this album: Time With You is really good.

Mostly just finding this annoying. They are all over the place and amateurish, but not in a charming way.

Overall it’s not “bad” but I really didn’t vibe with this. Honestly I couldn’t wait for it to be over halfway through, and was bored by most of the songs.

Vintage alt-rock sound from the late 80s and early 90s. Interesting college radio station fare but not even the best examples from the era. The early tracks are the best. The band has a quality overall sound and the experimentation in the latter half of the album is interesting. Overall, representative but not the most memorable or peak listening for the time, genre, or craft.

I really like the first two tracks, but the rest is a bit hit-or-miss. Mike Watt played bass in this act, and likewise, I was never sold on Minutemen's patchy aesthetics. On paper, I should enjoy them (I usually love unpredictable "post-punk" records). But something in their music rubs me the wrong way, I don't know what it is. And even though fIREHOSE offers something different, the same thing happens here for me, sadly. 2/5 for the purposes of this list, translated to a 7/10 grade for more general purposes (5 + 2) Number of albums left to review: 452 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 256 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 131 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 164 (including this one)

Slightly quirky agit punk pop with sparse production. Few hooks. May need more than one listen but it won't get it. Left me a bit cold.

Maybe not a proper listen but I wasn't enamoured with what I heard.

This album seems to have the ability to sound pretty decent without ever making me want to listen to more of it. This album has a calmer 90s alt style with some jam intersections but overall it just doesn’t work for me. Maybe it’s that there are significantly better similar sounding bands than them. Not bad but not great. 5.3/10

There’s a decent four song run on ‘Fromhohio’ taking in ‘Time With You’, ‘If’n’, ‘Some Things’ and ‘Understanding’. I'm underwhelmed by the rest of the album.

This felt like a Punk record in a way with the shorter song structure and the overall feel, but the music was a weird pop punk/Paul Simon mix for me at times. It was fine I guess, but I didn't care for it.

very disjointed. i liked certain songs ok, but then they will take a weird left turn. it almost sounds like primus, yes, and gin blossoms mixed together. depending on what song you’re playing, the band it sounds like most can change. certainly an interesting listen, though.

Started out interesting, slid into unimpressive.

At this point, I’ve gotten plenty of bizarre and totally unique albums and this is one of the least notable ones I’ve listened to. I was mostly bored and uninterested the whole time but it wasn’t bad enough to get a 1. On the other hand, at least I still remember listening to kollaps and how I felt toward it. This one is getting forgotten at exactly 1020 tomorrow and just frees up the next 24 hours for whatever music I want.

Sounded like a bar band to me. A band good enough to attract a local following through familiarity but nothing remarkable.

This is disposable, even by punk standards. There are a host of better punk bands more appropriately suited to this list, including Mike Watt's own Minutemen, who are probably the only reason this band got any attention. The extra star is for Mike.

Maybe it’s because I expected a hardcore/Midwest emo LP from the band/album name combo, but man did this not come across in any kind of memorable way. Listened before lunch and I’m struggling to recall any specifics outside the somewhat Pearl Jam-esque closing tracks, just not distinct or important in any kind of way.

Odd genre

A little too folksy for me at times, reminding me a lot of 60s-70s rock (at least "Riddle of the Eighties" and "Liberty for our Friend"). Despite liking a lot of post-punk stuff, I actually do not like this album. It just does not quite connect with me. While "Time With You" isn't too bad overall, I still do not really like it.

At least it was only 30 mins and I could treat it as background music without feeling guilty.

By far the most forgettable album on this list. How do you rate nothingness? Easy - give it a 2. At least it didn’t invoke a violent reaction in my eardrums like when a body rejects the organ transplant. Or when Ian Dury gets played over the speakers.

My first question, did this alum enter the list before or after the Ohio train disaster? I mean, fromohio and a picture of train? Pretty morbid, if the list came out with this album during the ecological disaster. But Ohio is home the biggest bunch of opioid addicts and dumbass buckeye fans, so I guess it was already a disaster of a state. The summary called this an alternate rock album, but I didn't here much rock. Again, what do you expect from an album titled fromohio? Wasn't a big fan of this guys voice, but overall nothing to offending to the ears. Thought a few songs were OK. A bit cheesy, but liked Liberty for our Friend. A couple others I thought were pretty good were Time with You and Some Things. Nothing I would download and pretty sure I will not revisit this album. Guess I'm giving a big solid shoulder shrug and Meh.... 2

Bit of a comedown after the Sex Pistols - this is much more charming but lacking a bit of energy. Not sure that it merits being on this list to be honest, there's nothing about it that particularly grabs me, it was never particularly popular, and it just doesn't stand out at all. 2/5, not unpleasant but no reason for it being on this list.

Meh. I think I like the idea of the Minutemen/Minutemen adjacent bands more than I actually like their music.

I always though that firehose were, at least on paper, the sort of band that I should like. But I've listened to this three times through, and it doesn't do much for me. Well played, but the songwriting just doesn't grab me. Interestingly, after this album finishes, spotify plays wire, the wipers, and gang of four. They are all aesthetically similar to firehose, but all get my blood pumping in a way that this doesn't. I don't hate this, but I don't think I'll ever listen to it again.

Picture this: I start the album, and am greeted with a sick drum and guitar combo, I'm thinking this will be another Minutemen situation where I get a funky punk album I enjoy a lot. Now picture that all being ripped away ten seconds later, when the song completely changes to some folk punk that pales in comparison to bands like R.E.M. and Violent Femmes. The album isn't awful, but it never feels like it commits to the style, which I get would be a highlight, the variety, but despite this all the songs still blend together and only when that funky sound starts to bleed out does it get a little better, but nothing ever hits that high that those first ten seconds explore.

Disliked the singer’s voice, but reading about this band I hadn’t heard of, I respect its roots. And it got me to listen to Minutemen!

In the interest of being fair, I’ll be up front and say I listened to this with a possible migraine so I was not in the best frame of mind. Songs I already knew: none Favourites after listening: Liberty For Our Friend I’m finding that post-punk rarely tends to click for me. I don’t really understand what that genre means, but that’s what Wikipedia says fIREHOSE are. To me, it sounded like a similar vibe as The Jam, just with weaker vocals and all around songwriting. The bass lines were often interesting, but beyond that there wasn’t much memorable going on here for me. The only time my ears pricked up was for Liberty For Our Friend which I did enjoy, but the rest of the album just seemed boring. Oh, and two of the tracks are just drum solos. Two whole tracks of just drums. Unfortunately, it’s just not for me.

This list the deeper and deeper I get into it just feels like the dude in high school who thought his music taste was better than everyone and tired to convince that this shitty album he loved was the greatest album you’ll ever hear.

So I listened to the first few songs and had to pause it to do something. As I was about to resume, I didn't remember what the first couple of songs I listened to sounded like and I think that's pretty telling for how the album finishes - totally forgettable. I guess I could give bonus points for it being a short and quick album. 4/10.

Not a whole lot going on here for me. Never heard of this group, but thought they were UK or maybe even Irish based on some of the styles at play here. It's a little punky, but pretty upbeat. Not much stood out to me, but I don't hate it, it's pretty consistent. Just not something I want to return to. Favorite tracks: Riddle of the Eighties. Album art: Quite a few things going on here, the blocking is a bit strange. I really like the graffiti face though. 2.5/5

I guess one of the drawbacks of going through these albums using this website is that you cannot read the author's justification for including an album on the list. Because wtf is this generic ass boring ass shit? Like I'd much rather listen to a terrible album than this, because at least a terrible album would be making a choice. At least it would be interesting. At least it would make me feel SOMETHING. That being said, the album name "Fromohio" is very fitting. Because this is the Ohio of albums. Completely middle of the road, largely inoffensive, 100% forgettable thing that has no real purpose and that no one ever needs to visit.

Good band, woeful singer. Jane was excessively negative. Shannah thought it was lackluster. Bill liked what she heard but left partway through. (2/5)

This didn't stand out to me at all, really. I couldn't work out how it had earned its place on this list.

Best Song: In My Mind. Nice rolling guitar and drums. Worst Song: Time With You. Sounds like a high school band. Overall: Likeable high tempo music made uninteresting with boring vocals. Would have preferred an instrumental version.

Was hopeful with this - backstory read like a 'alt-folk-rock band' i'd like. But it's just so utterly forgettable. I should have guessed when that much effort goes into the band name.

Lots of ambition on this album, but the shorter song lengths prevent many of the tracks from developing. Feels like something a band would make a couple years before their big break

Meh. Did not enjoy. Didn't hate it, its not offensively bad or anything. More of an elevator music vibe. What a terrible album cover, though. Not sure if I have seen one worse.

2.5 | Un rock alternativo bastante agradable, un disco que se escucha muy a gusto con sus breaks poco comunes, sus pistas de solos, los cambios ligeros de estilo, una influencia medio country alternativo en algunos lados. Podría entender que suena un poquito adelantado en algunos aspectos como si fuera del 93 a pesar de ser del 89.... Me gusta la evolución de un post punk con ese country y lo fresco y crudo; sin embargo, no es mi máximo, quizá por ese punto de escucharse pionero también para mí se escucha hoy en día un poco genérico en esa bola de rock alternativo. Agradable, bastante, pero nada que te haga pararte del asiento.

I'm not so sure about this one. It's a wild and only partially folded amalgam of genres. The musicians (singer aside) clearly have a mastery of their instruments, but at the same time they seem unconcerned about anything sounding cohesive or finished. Like, literally, some of the songs just sort of stop. As for the engergy of the music, I bet they had a good time putting the music together and playing it. I suspect they'd also be a good band to hear live. Alas this isn't "1001 bands you should hear live" so it all comes down to the album. For that, this one didn't really do it for me and I'm not really clear on why its included in this list.

Firehose's third album released in 1989 and was recorded in the lead singer/guitarist's home state of Ohio. The music is alternative rock, but with a hint of acoustic and folksy flair. Most consider this album the band's most accessible one and an American record, rich in tradition and innovation. None of the songs on the album really stuck out to me though.

This record seemed like a lot of fun to make, and a little less to listen to. I can appreciate that energy, but there wasn't a lot here that inspired another listen from me. It kind of oscillated between half-decent, folk-inspired tunes like "Riddle of the Eighties" to irritating drivel like "What Gets Heard" or "Mas Cajones," which suddenly takes a turn for the better when it predicts Pavement from 1:10 to 1:25. I feel like it was a 50/50 shot of whether I'd like something or be intensely annoyed. It didn't help that I mostly hated the bass playing. I can imagine someone really digging this, but this record doesn't exactly seem essential to me. 1.5/5 Favourite song: "Riddle of the Eighties" or "Vastopol"

This is the epitome of unremarkable and bland. It sounds like a hundred bands, and without any ear for melodies, cause none of the songs sticks. Is it neither all bad, un-listenable or garbage, but it definitely does not belong here in my opinion. Cause it manages to be late to the party with their sound, and outdated. Didn't enjoy myself.

If it weren't for the lineage to the Minutemen there wouldn't be any reason even pick up this record but once you do you'll find it's yet another of a million scratchy lo-fi American rock albums with a terrible singer. Completely undistinguished.

Slap base, math rock, lyrics about basketball, production at times that washes out the lyrics all without the key ingredient...soul. I imagine the friends of this band ran out of excuses to not come to their gigs before they 'made it'.

Jag har aldrig hört talas om varken artisten eller skivan. Men jag har inte missat något väsentligt heller. Låter emellanåt mer sent 60-tal än sent 80-tal. Gitarrexercis utan några egentliga låtar och helt ointressant sång.

Och jag läser ur den andra Moseboken: Och Heren lät den 11e plågan falla över Faraos folk. Den kallades ” den amerikanska indien. Och Herren sade ”Och den skola vara fruktansvärd och sätta skräck i män, kvinnor, barn, djur och allt levande.”

Humorlöst trams blandat med usel folkrock, hårdrocksinfuenser och trista trumsolon till mellanakter. Inte ens wikipedia vill ha med det här albumet att göra.

They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but sometimes you should judge an album by its cover. This is the case. Completely unrelated, hastily stitched photographs on a sleeve, and the same goes for the music. Half an hour of sound, like a budding band rehearsing in a garage, with a bleating vocalist, an electric guitar strummed as if they'd never picked it up before, and two drum solos as separate tracks. This is probably how the Pixies would have played if everyone in the band had been on desomorphine. This album wasn't included in the first edition of the book. Who later decided that I should listen to this album before I die? What is this person's life like now, how are they doing?

Track 5 on this, Mas Cojones, translates as More Bollocks. And it doesn't get much more bollocks than this disjointed, discordant jam session. Someone likes a bass guitar... My teeth were already on edge when I saw how the band name was written; such pretentious wankery cannot go unpunished by these hands - automatic 1-star deduction (Pvris, Chvrches, k.d. lang - I'm coming for you too). The best thing I can say for this album is it's mercifully short, about 31 minutes. One star. Less the mandatory deduction, should give zero, but alas I have to give it one. You jammy gets.

This is horrible, just because you are good at guitar and can produce noise with your buds does not mean you're good (much less "essential") music

I can live without hearing this album again. A couple of songs were ok, but I really struggled to listen to this.

There’s bands that mix genres in a way that feels inspired, refreshing, or even novel. This is not one of those bands. This entire album feels so disjointed and out of sync with itself, I had trouble focusing on it. It’s as if each member of the band wants to play a different style of music, and rather than collaborate, they just.. play different styles of music overtop of each other. The guitarist would clearly rather be in a funk-rock band. The bass player dreams of being in a punk band. The vocalist sounds like he’d love to be in a Beatles cover band. I can’t fathom listening to another minute of this. Genuinely grating. 1*
