Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Didn’t really get on with this, nothing stood out
I had never heard of fIREHOSE before or a single song on the album. I had high hopes to find a hidden gem. It might be one of those, you had to be there, type of things? It was fine.
Good band, Never heard of them but they know what they are doing. Familiar baselines.
very disjointed. i liked certain songs ok, but then they will take a weird left turn. it almost sounds like primus, yes, and gin blossoms mixed together. depending on what song you’re playing, the band it sounds like most can change. certainly an interesting listen, though.
Started out interesting, slid into unimpressive.
At this point, I’ve gotten plenty of bizarre and totally unique albums and this is one of the least notable ones I’ve listened to. I was mostly bored and uninterested the whole time but it wasn’t bad enough to get a 1. On the other hand, at least I still remember listening to kollaps and how I felt toward it. This one is getting forgotten at exactly 1020 tomorrow and just frees up the next 24 hours for whatever music I want.
Sounded like a bar band to me. A band good enough to attract a local following through familiarity but nothing remarkable.
This is disposable, even by punk standards. There are a host of better punk bands more appropriately suited to this list, including Mike Watt's own Minutemen, who are probably the only reason this band got any attention. The extra star is for Mike.
Maybe it’s because I expected a hardcore/Midwest emo LP from the band/album name combo, but man did this not come across in any kind of memorable way. Listened before lunch and I’m struggling to recall any specifics outside the somewhat Pearl Jam-esque closing tracks, just not distinct or important in any kind of way.
Light 5/10
Odd genre
A little too folksy for me at times, reminding me a lot of 60s-70s rock (at least "Riddle of the Eighties" and "Liberty for our Friend"). Despite liking a lot of post-punk stuff, I actually do not like this album. It just does not quite connect with me. While "Time With You" isn't too bad overall, I still do not really like it.
At least it was only 30 mins and I could treat it as background music without feeling guilty.
By far the most forgettable album on this list. How do you rate nothingness? Easy - give it a 2. At least it didn’t invoke a violent reaction in my eardrums like when a body rejects the organ transplant. Or when Ian Dury gets played over the speakers.
I forgot everything that happened in this album.
So bland. Can't believe someone heard this and thought "yes, this has to be one of the 1,001 albums to hear before you die".
2/5. A decent collection of short, punchy tracks that I don’t remember at all. It’s nice but I didn’t feel anything really.
This is one album I did not need to hear before I died...
It was an interesting album but didn't particularly enjoy it. It is rock but it is not really indie or alternative but there are those elements. It was relatively short which was good.
that went by quick
it was just meh not for me
Meh
My first question, did this alum enter the list before or after the Ohio train disaster? I mean, fromohio and a picture of train? Pretty morbid, if the list came out with this album during the ecological disaster. But Ohio is home the biggest bunch of opioid addicts and dumbass buckeye fans, so I guess it was already a disaster of a state. The summary called this an alternate rock album, but I didn't here much rock. Again, what do you expect from an album titled fromohio? Wasn't a big fan of this guys voice, but overall nothing to offending to the ears. Thought a few songs were OK. A bit cheesy, but liked Liberty for our Friend. A couple others I thought were pretty good were Time with You and Some Things. Nothing I would download and pretty sure I will not revisit this album. Guess I'm giving a big solid shoulder shrug and Meh.... 2
It's OK. It didn't blow me away though
It’s alright and some edgy songs but all feels a little flat. Middling
It was ok. Nothing really great about it. Sounds like they might be a good live band. Sometimes that energy doesn't come through on a recording.
Wtf
I’d never heard of this band but I don’t think I’ve been missing all that much, really. They’ve got a couple of agreeable ditties and a playful streak, but nothing special or groundbreaking.
Uninspired
Stopped during the first song when the singer couldn't hit the notes. If that's on purpose I'm not in the mood. Maybe I'll try it again sometime.
Fromohio. Boring. 2.
Bit of a comedown after the Sex Pistols - this is much more charming but lacking a bit of energy. Not sure that it merits being on this list to be honest, there's nothing about it that particularly grabs me, it was never particularly popular, and it just doesn't stand out at all. 2/5, not unpleasant but no reason for it being on this list.
Sometimes there’s a good reason why you haven’t heard of a band before. Nothing special here. Next…
Meh. I think I like the idea of the Minutemen/Minutemen adjacent bands more than I actually like their music.
I always though that firehose were, at least on paper, the sort of band that I should like. But I've listened to this three times through, and it doesn't do much for me. Well played, but the songwriting just doesn't grab me. Interestingly, after this album finishes, spotify plays wire, the wipers, and gang of four. They are all aesthetically similar to firehose, but all get my blood pumping in a way that this doesn't. I don't hate this, but I don't think I'll ever listen to it again.
Picture this: I start the album, and am greeted with a sick drum and guitar combo, I'm thinking this will be another Minutemen situation where I get a funky punk album I enjoy a lot. Now picture that all being ripped away ten seconds later, when the song completely changes to some folk punk that pales in comparison to bands like R.E.M. and Violent Femmes. The album isn't awful, but it never feels like it commits to the style, which I get would be a highlight, the variety, but despite this all the songs still blend together and only when that funky sound starts to bleed out does it get a little better, but nothing ever hits that high that those first ten seconds explore.
Some cool bits but also a bit messy at times, not terrible but not really memorable either
Not sure about this one. Had some high hopes after the first song but the album went into way too many directions for my taste.
Dull dull dull, left not a trace. Hum drum guitar music from America
Disliked the singer’s voice, but reading about this band I hadn’t heard of, I respect its roots. And it got me to listen to Minutemen!
In the interest of being fair, I’ll be up front and say I listened to this with a possible migraine so I was not in the best frame of mind. Songs I already knew: none Favourites after listening: Liberty For Our Friend I’m finding that post-punk rarely tends to click for me. I don’t really understand what that genre means, but that’s what Wikipedia says fIREHOSE are. To me, it sounded like a similar vibe as The Jam, just with weaker vocals and all around songwriting. The bass lines were often interesting, but beyond that there wasn’t much memorable going on here for me. The only time my ears pricked up was for Liberty For Our Friend which I did enjoy, but the rest of the album just seemed boring. Oh, and two of the tracks are just drum solos. Two whole tracks of just drums. Unfortunately, it’s just not for me.
This really didn't interest me at all, other than the occasional riff reminiscent of the Faces. A bit drab
Not exactly my slow of sound
Never heard of this before. It's stupid "college rock" type stuff. I'm guessing fugazi fans like it. 2/5.
I found this album pretty damn boring. Nothing offensive to my ears, but I wouldn't ever play any of it.
100 in a dozen kind of music 2/5
Everything besides “The Softest Hammer” is really dull.
'nuf That Shit
Good old quickly.
Meh indie type music. Nothing special
Doesn’t hold water 👍🏾
Not for me
This list the deeper and deeper I get into it just feels like the dude in high school who thought his music taste was better than everyone and tired to convince that this shitty album he loved was the greatest album you’ll ever hear.
Not bad, feels a bit repetitive. Inoffensive. Standouts: Some Things
So I listened to the first few songs and had to pause it to do something. As I was about to resume, I didn't remember what the first couple of songs I listened to sounded like and I think that's pretty telling for how the album finishes - totally forgettable. I guess I could give bonus points for it being a short and quick album. 4/10.
+0.5 for Spotify subsequently suggesting the “Crate Diggin’ Sub Pop Records” playlist.
Was on
another headscratcher. Super short songs, actually not bad, but not sure why it's on this list. Enjoyable in the background but nothing more.
Not a whole lot going on here for me. Never heard of this group, but thought they were UK or maybe even Irish based on some of the styles at play here. It's a little punky, but pretty upbeat. Not much stood out to me, but I don't hate it, it's pretty consistent. Just not something I want to return to. Favorite tracks: Riddle of the Eighties. Album art: Quite a few things going on here, the blocking is a bit strange. I really like the graffiti face though. 2.5/5
It was OK, but I wasn't really feeling it
Praticamente sem lembranças.
It has its moments. 2.5/5
I guess one of the drawbacks of going through these albums using this website is that you cannot read the author's justification for including an album on the list. Because wtf is this generic ass boring ass shit? Like I'd much rather listen to a terrible album than this, because at least a terrible album would be making a choice. At least it would be interesting. At least it would make me feel SOMETHING. That being said, the album name "Fromohio" is very fitting. Because this is the Ohio of albums. Completely middle of the road, largely inoffensive, 100% forgettable thing that has no real purpose and that no one ever needs to visit.
Good band, woeful singer. Jane was excessively negative. Shannah thought it was lackluster. Bill liked what she heard but left partway through. (2/5)
Unremarkable
This didn't stand out to me at all, really. I couldn't work out how it had earned its place on this list.
Best Song: In My Mind. Nice rolling guitar and drums. Worst Song: Time With You. Sounds like a high school band. Overall: Likeable high tempo music made uninteresting with boring vocals. Would have preferred an instrumental version.
Alright. Wouldn't listen again.
Was hopeful with this - backstory read like a 'alt-folk-rock band' i'd like. But it's just so utterly forgettable. I should have guessed when that much effort goes into the band name.
¿Madurez? Nunca lo sabremos.
okay the first couple of seconds of the first track had me SO hyped for what was about to come, but then the…like how does…hard 180 gotta say. ohgeez
It’s ok alt rock
Lots of ambition on this album, but the shorter song lengths prevent many of the tracks from developing. Feels like something a band would make a couple years before their big break
Meh. Did not enjoy. Didn't hate it, its not offensively bad or anything. More of an elevator music vibe. What a terrible album cover, though. Not sure if I have seen one worse.
Minutemen > fIREHOSE
I'm not so sure about this one. It's a wild and only partially folded amalgam of genres. The musicians (singer aside) clearly have a mastery of their instruments, but at the same time they seem unconcerned about anything sounding cohesive or finished. Like, literally, some of the songs just sort of stop. As for the engergy of the music, I bet they had a good time putting the music together and playing it. I suspect they'd also be a good band to hear live. Alas this isn't "1001 bands you should hear live" so it all comes down to the album. For that, this one didn't really do it for me and I'm not really clear on why its included in this list.
Firehose's third album released in 1989 and was recorded in the lead singer/guitarist's home state of Ohio. The music is alternative rock, but with a hint of acoustic and folksy flair. Most consider this album the band's most accessible one and an American record, rich in tradition and innovation. None of the songs on the album really stuck out to me though.
This is definitely an album.
Meh.
Meh
A album that could have been decent, if they decided to make proper songs and not try to be innovative with weird sounds and noises
Didn't really gel with this
Kinda jam band-y.... not my thing, but not terrible.
2.5
Only listened twice, but just not exciting to me at all. Favorite song was a 40 sec instrumental only because the name of it was funny
Not prickling, not boring.
Might be cool if you're really into music theory and that type of thing but not for me
fine, listenable, but nothing special.
Nothing really compelled me on this album. I enjoyed the loud rhythm guitar and bass, but just couldn't get into this one. 2.0
Giving it a 2 since Charles Mingus set the baseline for a 1 star review, but not for me. Just not very interesting.
meh
This record seemed like a lot of fun to make, and a little less to listen to. I can appreciate that energy, but there wasn't a lot here that inspired another listen from me. It kind of oscillated between half-decent, folk-inspired tunes like "Riddle of the Eighties" to irritating drivel like "What Gets Heard" or "Mas Cajones," which suddenly takes a turn for the better when it predicts Pavement from 1:10 to 1:25. I feel like it was a 50/50 shot of whether I'd like something or be intensely annoyed. It didn't help that I mostly hated the bass playing. I can imagine someone really digging this, but this record doesn't exactly seem essential to me. 1.5/5 Favourite song: "Riddle of the Eighties" or "Vastopol"
.
Thought it was going to be really good, sadly it didn’t quite match the expectation. Shame.
Some tunes are OK, but nothing exceptional.
Erm...it was okay. 👌
like, the list name becomes completely pointless with this kind of albums...
Meh.
I wasn't feeling it
Somewhat diverse, 90s indie rock vibes mixed with a hint of zappa
Ooof didn’t like that much.
This was ok. I flipped the light the tracks and gave a quick listen. Again, not really my jam, but ok music.
This is a not good version of this.
I feel like the album cover tricked me... I wanted it to be harder
Did not catch my attention. Respect for Mike Watt, but this isn't for me.
1989. Key Songs: Riddle of the Eighties, Mas Cojones, Time With You
Never really got the big deal with this band. Still don't.
Very experimental, to me it was just noise
1) 2/10 - idk what this jangly non-descript music is. I dont think I like it. 2) 5/10 - cute guitar riff. Whatever song otherwise. 3) 6/10 - some decent elements to this song. Better than the last two. Still mostly meh. 4) 1/10 - basic country guitar intermission 5) 1/10 - I cant even quantify this as a song 6) 3/10 - more meh 7) 1/10 - why? 8) 1/10 - idk what this band wants to be. This is like a Beatles b-track ... I'm over this. not for me at all. Its not country. Its not punk. Its not rock. Its a weird bastardization of them all and its ugly.
Why? Or should I say wHY? 1.0
Nothing at all monumental. a $1.99 discount bin record for me. And that's about $.50 too much.
Not for meee...
yuck
Meh
This is the epitome of unremarkable and bland. It sounds like a hundred bands, and without any ear for melodies, cause none of the songs sticks. Is it neither all bad, un-listenable or garbage, but it definitely does not belong here in my opinion. Cause it manages to be late to the party with their sound, and outdated. Didn't enjoy myself.
If it weren't for the lineage to the Minutemen there wouldn't be any reason even pick up this record but once you do you'll find it's yet another of a million scratchy lo-fi American rock albums with a terrible singer. Completely undistinguished.
Slap base, math rock, lyrics about basketball, production at times that washes out the lyrics all without the key ingredient...soul. I imagine the friends of this band ran out of excuses to not come to their gigs before they 'made it'.
disappointing
not my thing
They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but sometimes you should judge an album by its cover. This is the case. Completely unrelated, hastily stitched photographs on a sleeve, and the same goes for the music. Half an hour of sound, like a budding band rehearsing in a garage, with a bleating vocalist, an electric guitar strummed as if they'd never picked it up before, and two drum solos as separate tracks. This is probably how the Pixies would have played if everyone in the band had been on desomorphine. This album wasn't included in the first edition of the book. Who later decided that I should listen to this album before I die? What is this person's life like now, how are they doing?
Amateur hour. Way too all over the place and screamy. Although at the end of the album, another song came on by them from a different album. It wasn't too bad. This one gets a 1
Nothing about this is very memorable. I liked "Time With You" but everything else just blended together. I am not sure why this made the list. Not bad, necessarily, just forgettable. 3/10
Meh
Not for me. 1/5
Sounded like a mess. Not for me.
Nope.
Literally no.
Haven't heard of them before. God, it wasn't music, it was random sounds 1/5
Track 5 on this, Mas Cojones, translates as More Bollocks. And it doesn't get much more bollocks than this disjointed, discordant jam session. Someone likes a bass guitar... My teeth were already on edge when I saw how the band name was written; such pretentious wankery cannot go unpunished by these hands - automatic 1-star deduction (Pvris, Chvrches, k.d. lang - I'm coming for you too). The best thing I can say for this album is it's mercifully short, about 31 minutes. One star. Less the mandatory deduction, should give zero, but alas I have to give it one. You jammy gets.
This is horrible, just because you are good at guitar and can produce noise with your buds does not mean you're good (much less "essential") music
Not my jam.
1.2/i can't stand this type of music man Would I listen again? NO Deserves to be on this list? No
55
I would argue that this is the most boring album to date. Dull, uninspired, and dreadfully slow. And I like slow music DNF Best Song: N/A Rating: 1/10 Stars: 1
Reminded me of early 80s UK bands like bIG*fLAME. Only not as good. Style over substance.
Mishmash of styles. Too experimental rock for me.
I'm not, but I feel sorry for those who are.
this was really bad
Would be better as music tracks for tv or movie, not good for just listening
Who?
1’5
I can live without hearing this album again. A couple of songs were ok, but I really struggled to listen to this.
There’s bands that mix genres in a way that feels inspired, refreshing, or even novel. This is not one of those bands. This entire album feels so disjointed and out of sync with itself, I had trouble focusing on it. It’s as if each member of the band wants to play a different style of music, and rather than collaborate, they just.. play different styles of music overtop of each other. The guitarist would clearly rather be in a funk-rock band. The bass player dreams of being in a punk band. The vocalist sounds like he’d love to be in a Beatles cover band. I can’t fathom listening to another minute of this. Genuinely grating. 1*
Oh come on. (ntm.)
Boring!
What in the name of god is this
1.5
A musically okay, vocally terrible record that I find rather forgettable. Was hoping it would end.
Did not feel any particular way about this album, it just kinda came and went for me. I didn’t find any tracks memorable and the mixing was meh.
some tracks where ok but bit of a meh album overall
+: Riddle of the Eighties, Whisperin' While Hollerin', Vastopol +-: In My Mind, Más Cojones, Liberty for Our Friend, If'n -: What Gets Heard, Let the Drummer Have Some, Time With You, Some Things Understanding, 'Nuf That Shit, George, The Softest Hammer 3,6/10
p613. 1989. 1 star. A band that desperately wants to be REM but lacks the talent or the songs. On the plus side, it's short.
I was hoping that I could write that the only good thing about this album was that it was short.. But it felt so long. Did not need to listen to this.
Nothing special to write home about here... Honestly, don't understand how this album made it on the list
Didn't click
What was this? Terrible singing off-key
There are simply some albums that I won't understand the reason they made the list. This is one of those albums.
I'm glad I looked into this album a little bit before writing anything, because I almost made a fool of myself by calling this 2000s midwest emo (the album erroneously showed as 2006 in my player). I stand by what I commented to my partner, though, which is that I think it's wrong for any genre but punk to seemingly portray an inability to sing as a positive, because I refuse to try to get past "I never attempted to learn breath control" in order to try to listen to an album. The lineage here with Minutemen is worth a couple of points, I guess, but I did not find this an enjoyable experience.
Mmm.
At first, I thought "Who the hell is fIREHOSE?", then I thought "Why the hell is fIREHOSE?", and then I found out that it's the remnants of the people that made the song from Jackass. Quite a journey.
Boring
I'll give this one a single star, because I can't believe it's on this list. I mean, how is it even possible?
Even the band doesn't remember recording it.
I don't know what's going on here and why this album is on this list. Being quirky and off-the-box? Maybe, but it sounds horrible at the same time. I couldn't stand the vocalist and the music was so uninspiring, I gave up halfway. Most likely I am missing something, an important piece of trivia to unlock this album, but after half an hour with fIREHOSE I am not interested in finding out what that is.
Why in the hell is this Album on here?! What is special or ground breaking about this? I feel like I’m being trolled
Boorning
Mostly just annoying. Short though.
nope no folk type music it’s too close to country
Never heard of them. Never want to hear them again. Don’t know how this was even considered for the chart. I gave Marvin Gaye a bad review yesterday which I feel bad about after this. Unlike this lot he was at least musical. This is straight into the bin.
I don't exactly hate it, so I guess it's fine? But I'll never go out of my way to seek it out again. If someone wanted to redo this list so it's a tight 1,001 on the nose, they'd surely cut this one. In fact, the more I continued to listen the more I realized I actually do despise it.
Kan næppe kaldes musik.
The production is fucking horrible, the mixing is awful, druming sounds boring, drum solo songs are whack, bassist is trying to hard to be quirky and interesting, but he is a bassist, guitar is flacid and lame., vocalist sounds like an angsty nerd. Good time for a reminder that this list (not the website, godbless ya) was made by some random fucking guy. This album is piss.
I don't know why this is on the list. I did not enjoy it.
No matter how many times I listen to it and how hard I try, I struggle to remember anything about this. Nothing really stands out at all and it’s just a pretty forgettable experience. Don’t really know why it is on the list to be honest…
Nothing here really stands out, other than the bass on some songs, I did not exactly dislike this album, its just... Kind of boring. If background music in an outdated pub had a poster album it would be this, its not even remotely enjoyable. In one ear and out the other. I did not finish the record in its entirety. If the first 11 tracks (bar Vastopol) are mediocre, then I doubt the final 3 will be redeeming. Favourite: Vastopol
Moje první setkání s fIREHOSE a teda… obrovské zklamání. Ze začátku jsem si říkala, že to je nějaký docela fajn mix rocku a punku, takový jam-out session, just guys being dudes, ale jak jsem se prokousávala tím albem, tím otravnější to bylo. Největším kamenem úrazu byly vokály, byly podivně patetické a ufňukané a nezapadaly mi do hudby. Nejlepší písničky: nic mě nezaujalo, ale nejspíš Vastopol (bez vokálů) Nejhorší písničky: Liberty For Our Friend (podivně corny a patetický, nezapadá do zbytku), The Softest Hammer (hrozný vokály, prázdný) Hodnocení: 3/10
The only good thing to say about this album is that it is mercifully short.
Treeniksellä on sika kivaa vähän soitella ja juoda bisseä!
Det var hverken catchy eller noget andet.
100th album. Let's hope it doesnt blow. It wasn't awful, but it was astoundingly forgettable, like an unfunny science teacher.
It seems to me like nothing much at all is happening in this album. I'm nearly at the end and I'm not sure I've really heard a single fully-fledged riff or some kind of theme. It's just... a bunch of stuff happening. Or maybe it's so boring and nothing that it's washed over me without me even realising it.
Det här var faktiskt ganska så dåligt.
not what I expected, and much worse than I could have guessed. just dreadful, who likes this shit?
Coincidence that the band banner is an anagram of ire of use? Yes? I'm too tired for this. Maybe as it makes no sense; no? No coincidence, just nonsense? Gah!
Did not make it through the whole album. Mediocre, occasionally grating, decent drumming.
From the opening cadence of just cymbals, it begs the question if that is going to be a major theme on the album. It is, not that there is anything wrong with that, only that it sticks out. "Mas Cojones" is pretty groovy, maybe the best of the bunch, but the rest seem to fall short of matching it. More cymbal solos for "Let The Drummer Have Some", which changes in tempo seem deliberate and well done. "Liberty For Our Friend" is a bar song. That is all. "The Softest Hammer" maybe could have been this album's overall style since this band is good at being intentional and subdued. While their proclivities for being groovy are evident, they seem to rely on that too much here and so its broad appeal, is not.
No me gustó.
Disliked this very much
