Might just be worth exploring
Altijd lastig, fIREHOSE
Op een paar onsamenhangende nummers na was dit eigenlijk best tof!
Not what I was expecting lol
In My Mind, this was Ok. Some Things on this album just weren’t my favorite, but maybe I wasn’t Understanding.
I liked more than half of this album a lot. Some of the tracks were odd, experimental, I guess. That's all that kept it from being 4 stars for me Solid 3.5.
Not as good as I hoped but not bad. Reminded me of college radio.
Speciaal
Cool
Early punk can’t really sound too bad. I liked it
It was a pretty good album. Like the guitar riffs
Very good bass album
It's hard not to go to the Minutemen comparison and that's an unrrasonably high bar. This is perfectly solid in its genre and I enjoyed it.
Some cool stuff. Inconsistent throughout the album
Whisperin' While Hollerin' stood out the most. Music was alright, nothing worth adding to a playlist for me.
Accessible, good indie rock/alternative rock from the late 1980s. Its sound is more 90s than 80s actually. It is a good album though none of the songs stand out or that special in my opinion.
Not my style of music today.
I was pleasantly surprised by some of this. A real eclectic mix of songs, occasionally pretty melodic.
3.5/5
Indie rock. Neither bad nor good. 3/5
Interesting crossover of Modest Mouse and moe.
SST and fIREHOUSE were staples of mid-late 80's skateboarding culture. Also, there's a lotta cool things that originate Fromohio... I remember getting excited whenever I saw a fIREHOSE cd in the used bin at Tower, but most of the time, my excitement would turn to disappointment because there were a shit-ton of used CDs by a band called "FIRE HOUSE" ... some lame hair band from the 90's (sorry Firehouse fans). If'n and Ragin' Full On are better albums, but it's nice to see these guys on the list.
This does not sound like and 80s album to me. It’s not heavy metal/rock and there are no synthesizers. This sounds more like proto-90s alternative to me, which was a pleasant surprise.
I like their bass forward sound, but I don't love the vocals. The structures keep you on your toes, but I'm not sure why this is even on here when The Minutemen are already present. I'll give 'em a 3 for their generally intriguing idiosyncrasies though.
Unique structure in these songs that's for sure. But, it's not exactly a fun listening experience. I can appreciate the gesture though.
They had us in the first half, not gonna lie. The first half inexplicably annoyed me (5.5/10) and the second half I loved (8/10). 6.75/10, then. Fave track: Time with you
Kinda amusing but again not anything special.
I liked a couple songs. Overall, meh.
Never knew this was the leftover members of the Minutemen.
I actually love this band but I still have no idea why this album is here. I actually kind of prefer both of their previous albums.
You know, this one grew on me. It feels like a lot of really great song concepts poorly executed but, as it went on, I started to get into the rhythm of... whatever their vibe is. By the end, I found that I was actually surprised and a little sad that it was over. Don't misunderstand, it still felt like nobody actually WORKED on these songs. It seems like they just played 'em once or twice and then hit record. I wonder what this would have sounded like if they'd taken the time to actually workshop these songs and craft these ideas into something more. The bones of greatness are there. They just didn't do the work and it's a shame.
was having fun, first half was very Minutemen. liberty for our friend was a super snooze. second half was kind of dull
Ewwgross. The music was fine tho (2.5/5)
I wouldn’t have categorised this as rock. And would have placed it in the 60s/70s folk scene rather than the very late 80s. But what do I know.
American alternative music of the eighties is a hinterland I'm still exploring. This is virtually unclassifiable, but there are some elements of the Feelies, Violent Femmes and hardcore bands. But all melded together in short, sharp songs that prioritise rhythm and impact above melody.
Wel leuk, maar niet veel meer dan dat. Een beetje alsof je The Beatles een aantal decennia later laat doorbreken, alleen dan dus jaren te laat terwijl de hele muziekwereld al een heel stuk verder is.
Heard before. Forgot what I was gonna say about it. Sounded softer than what I thought it would be. + Riddle of the Eighties + In My Mind + Vastopol + Time With You + If'n + The Softest Hammer
Jack of all styles, master of none.
cONFUSING
Surprisingly enjoyable so a positive 3*
That guitar was so great at the beginning and then went into a normal song. Let’s be real the 80s probably sucked minus the fentanyl-less blow. What Gets Heard sounds like the Viagra Boys. This album seems super uncohesive. Hard to put my finger on if I like it or not. Time With You is probably my favorite so far. Feel like I’m gonna have to give this one another listen with headphones instead of in the car but it’ll probably still be a 3.
this project was okay, just felt a bit underwhelming. all of the midwest references were neat though.
This was an interesting late 80s listen to hear the influence on the future alt-rock of the 90s
It's fine, a bit dated but has enough of interest and it's only around 30 minutes long, so doesn't outstay its welcome.
Trying to look ahead, a bit stuck in the past, never quite landing.
Ex-minutemen. Enough fun with enough seriousness. I like it. Sot Riddle of the eighties In my mind What gets heard 3/5
From the bassist and drummer of Minutemen with a new vocalist and guitarist, they had two albums before this which were more creative and hardcore, but here they take a softer and more traditional approach, although they do keep that experimental style in many tracks. It's short and diverse, and that bassist is quite distinctive and groovy. I was a bit underwhelmed but thought there were some good tracks here, but several I didn't care for much. Favorites: Riddle of the Eighties, In My Mind, Mas Cojones, Time With You, The Softest Hammer
it´s ok not turning minutemen type-B. But this album sounds better after ´liberty for our friend´, when some minutemen fragments and guitar riffs did make me remember that former band.
Feels very authentic
Not bad. Worth a few more listens. I’m sure I’ve heard some of this before.
laidback, with a 70'es feel.
apenitas 3
Some early prog-rock. Nice to put on in the background while cleaning the house.
This was okay. Not great. It's hard for me to even have a hard opinion about it.
This is ok. I don’t dislike it. That’s all I can really say about it. It’s just….ok.
Ehh some songs were alright others were eh. I feel like this was a completely mediocre album. Nothing outstanding but nothing offensive. Pretty average.
New to me and there's some interesting stuff in here - "Whisperin' While Hollerin'" and "Time With You" are the initial favourites. Biggest problem I have just a few songs in is that the album sounds thin. Where's the beef dammit. But also a bunch of these in the middle aren't great songs. Some very cool ideas and riffs but not a lot glues together. I'm giving this another pass to see if it clicks more.... ....which ... hey, it kinda did. There are still some songs that mostly suck around the mushy middle of the album but they're short enough to not matter as much :) and by the end I've already forgotten them. e.g. "Understanding" is a real nice song. This ended up a pleasant surprise with more melody and complexity than I'd expected - I could nitpick about this and that but I'm glad this ended up a weekend album so I could spend more time with it. Giving it a high 3 and could come back to this one. 7/10 3 stars
Fun album
Not bad
I heard this Watts guy was pretty good with "Minutemen." This is not Minutemen. This is mildly groovy rock music. Great bass, usually good melodies and drums. Silly goofy cover art 3.5/5
Interesting alternative rock
Rock alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.
This is pretty interesting, from a band I hadn't heard of before. Some songs I liked a lot, others were so-so. Random observation - the guitar playing occasionally reminded me a little bit of Steve Howe from Yes, which is a bit strange since it's a completely different style of music overall. Listening again. 3 stars.
Yeah, pretty good. Not super memorable, but I enjoyed the various aspects of this album. It sounds like this group is full of music-math nerds that really enjoy making fast-paced, technical music. Drumming and that slap bass were the highlights for me. Glad I listened. Fave tracks: In My Mind, Let The Drummer Have Some, Time With You
This was interesting. Lower energy than I expected.
Pleasantly surprised how modern this sounds
A bit slow for my taste
It has its moments, but fell a little flat overall
A new one for me, this. Never heard of them. Quite enjoyed it.
3/12, 25%
stop insisting we listen to below-average post-punk, even if there are folk sensibilities
pretty good
ok
Starts out pretty strong, but at the end I just had an overwhelming feeling of "this is fine I guess".
This one is pretty sick. It’s got some Primus vibes here and there. I also noticed it may have influences later 90s emo bands. Solid late 80s alternative with some punk flashes.
Has many of the earmarks of Minutemen album, but it's not a Minutemen album. In My Mind has a melodic sweetness that tells the listener that this is somewhat different. But then Vastopol and Mas Cojones reminds us that this that even without the brilliance of D.Boon, Firehose is still the same surviving members that made Minutemen so damn unique. It does drag a bit and one finds oneself waiting for another song as memorable as In My Mind. A solid effort 3.5 stars
Obviously I got love for Ohio boys but the album was ok. Would love to know why this was on this list
Liked the album as a whole, especially Riddle of the Eighties, Liberty for our Friend and Time With You
3 Hopefully they’re not in Ohio now 😬 I’ve never heard of this band or album, but I learned they’re basically the punk equivalent of New Order, forming and operating under a name separate from Minutemen after former frontman D. Boon passed away - though in this case with a new singer/guitarist in his place. So, with that, I expected this to have a punk sound to it, and while elements of that are definitely there, it seems like the new guy brought in a degree of folk influence, even going as far as to do a full-on cover of a folk song with Vastopol. The Minutemen roots are by no means absent though, with hints of their sound on some tracks (particularly in the basslines), and other tracks like Mas Cojones and What Gets Heard sounding like they could be full-on outtakes from the prior band. My first impression was that it’s an overall diluted sound of a better band, but it definitely started growing on me by the end. While I’m not sure if there are any specific tracks I would go back and revisit, as a whole it didn’t outstay its welcome, and so I think it’s fair to call it a nice companion piece to Minutemen’s discography.
Not what I expected at all. You can hear Watt starting to branch out, chop-wise.
meh
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Time With You (9) 2 - The Softest Hammer (14) 3 - Some Things (11)
Favourite song: This Time
It’s good. I enjoyed it.
I didn't dislike listening to this but couldn't really see what was so special about it. Guess it didn't click for me.
Hard for me to get why this is on the list, but it wasn’t bad. 6/10
6/10. Kinda interesting. Why was every song marked explicit? Were they swearing quietly and I just didn't notice?
Pretty odd and not always in an endearing way. 5/10
I didn't dislike it, but throughout I kept thinking I wondering is this what The Saw Doctors would sound like if they came from Ohio? 🤔
I don't get it. Strong bass lines and decent hooks - good. But punctuated by inexplicable breaks for stoned muttering bad drunken brother-in-law musings posing as deep thoughts - bad.
This album had a lot of interesting musical choices that didn't really land with me. I can appreciate the effort though--it definitely wasn't being weird for weirdness' sake. Favorite track: Understanding
Solid proto-90’s alt. Suffers from the usual problems with experimental albums of this era, e.g. ideas not fleshed out enough, faults in production, etc. still some solid ideas on here and definitely an unexpected listen.
3.4/5 decent punk/rock
Not what I was expecting. Has vibe, good riffing (both guitar and bass) - each track is a little punch of energy.
I started enjoying this more once I stopped comparing fIREHOSE with the Minutemen. In fact it feels like this album owes more to Creedance than punk rock. Well Creedance were an influence the Mike Watt was never shy in revealing. Fromohio is a really good album but just misses the mark on being an essential one for me
nice but for me not so special
Love the guitar sound. Never even heard of this band. Intrigued.
Really good
Some fun tracks. I didn't enjoy the ones that were all instrumental or the weird spoken word one.
Honestly had never really listed to fIREHOSE before. I liked it, but not so much as to listen to more than the once. If I’m leaning in this direction I’d rather listen to Outbox by Soulhat. (I know, not exactly the same thing.)
A gentle and slight album, ideal for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Notable for having two tracks entirely dedicated to drum solos.
I liked the sound. It felt like a jamsession instead of a proper studio record. Would have been 4 stars if the singer wouldn't sing this much out of tune
I hadn’t heard of these guys. Some interesting stuff, but nothing that really grabbed me.
I was totally unfamiliar with Firehose’s material. I think I was expecting grunge but this is nothing like that. Very listenable, at times poppy, sometimes a bit ordinary. The rhythm section is awesome. They actually let the drummer have some (one whole track). The bass is prominent. Vastopol is a beautiful, if brief, instrumental. A pleasant surprise
My, my, my Mike Watt listening runs more Minutemen than fIREHOSE though I did Fly the Flannel back in the day. Still you can see how this particular record fROMOHIO is a wonderful bridge between eras for Watt but also for maybe some college radio heads in the late 80s and early 90s. You can just hear a kid from Arkansas or anywhere shift effortlessly from praising R.E.M's Green to this album.
This was close to being 4 stars, loved some of the instruments but had some boring parts.
I liked this. I loved the very upfront mixing style. It gave it a live feel. I never listened to this band before. No reason, I just didn't. That was an oversight. I'll definitely listen to more.
I don't know how to classify this one, alt-jazz-rock? Either way, surprised, unheard of for me, and liked it. Riddle of the 80s and Vastopol, What Gets Heard...just a fairly fun listen throughout. Just feels like someone you might have been lucky enough to hear live had you walked into the right bar at the right time in the early 90s.
Folk punk with hints of groove
Can't tell if it just bored me, or i liked it. probably somewhere in between really
Love the cover art, got somewhat board through the record though.
3.5/5 It’s nice to have some variation in genre and music in this list. This was an album where I didn’t know what to expect, but I liked it. Could have gone both ways. The songs are short and that makes them actually good. Sounds like they just make what they want and don’t bother to fit in. Favourite songs: - In my mind - Liberty for our friend - Some things
Some interesting parts Especially drums and guitar have some existing parts
I really struggled to decide what to make of this album. Clearly some talented musicians making something that sounded very much of its time and had some flashes of virtuosity in more than a few places. I found it a bit too uneven though, lurching between disparate genres and styles. I didn't care too much for the vocals either. But I didn't hate it and I've saved If'n as a stand out track. I definitely won't listen to the whole thing ever again though.
I like the sound of this, bright, upbeat, funky.
Kinda weird, not offensive
not bad but not very memorable
65/100: Pretty bland album. No songs really stuck out except for the aptly named “Let The Drummer Have Some,” which was a pretty decent drum solo track. Probably won’t revisit this album, mainly because I’ll likely forget about it.
The intro is a little jarring. The drums and guitar start with a very different sound than the band delivers. This is seems like a folk singer who was given a rock band. This is a good band. The music is enjoyable. However, I also understand why I have never heard them on the radio. There isn't a standout single in here. It also seems to fall apart as you get into it. Not uncommon for an album, but rough considering they don't start amazing.
I was sad to here that they were from Ohio but I researched it and thankfully only the guitarist is. My deepest condolences go out to Ed Crawford for the place he was born 🙏
Super short songs. Interesting mix of sounds though with some songs having funky bass lines that sound kind of like RHCP or Primus. A bit rough and simple for a few of the songs, but overall I didn’t hate it.
meh
Tosi solidia punkahtavaa menoa. Kumma et on menny tää bändi ohi
This is cool. Good indie jam post punk folky sound. Bass on What Gets Heard is insane. Sounds a bit like the Heads and Grateful Dead mixed. David Byrne like vocal delivery and lyrics. Time with You is my favorite track on here.
Normal 80s shit
Les pièces les plus intéressantes: Whisperin' While Hollerin', What Gets Heard, Time With You, If'n (un petit quelque chose de Primus ici par moment), Some Things
it was good for the time but not really impressive today.
Punk, 1989. On this album the songs are good and the energy is amazing, but the project is not so powerful even though it is really enjoyable. After all this is a solid record but nothing more.
Quick album, short songs, decent music, not something I would have sought out by myself
Wen't from loving this ... to thinking it was rubbish ... back to loving it. A real yo-yo of a record.
3rd August 2022 Started on the train in to work from Saville’s but finished the morning after having driven back from London. Not quite what I expected but not bad either. Quite unique, indie / punk vibes.
PRETTY GOOD
Ehhhhhh, not bad but nothing special. Who are these guys anyway?
Never heard of this band before now, not bad
I was not familiar with this band going into yesterday's listening session, but let me tell you this album was pretty good. I am giving it 3 stars but I will definitely have to go back and give it a more focused listen.
Thank you 1,001 for this nice new find. The lead guitarist is featured prominently and he’s pretty darned good. Interesting mix of indie, garage blues and prog.
Surprenant comme album, sa s'écoute super bien et j'aime le style. Je ne m'attendais pas vraiment à ca compte tenu que je ne connaissais pas du tout le band. 3.5
Didn't love it, but there is some great musicianship in there. 3
I thoroughly enjoyed Minutemen, so was looking forward to this post D Boon incarnation. Nice short songs, nimble bass playing and some funky guitar work in places. This is much more Americana than Minutemen's funky jazzy punk.
3.5
I knew nothing about fIREHOSE other than this was what messrs Watt and Hurley did after the Minutemen ended, so I had no real idea what to expect from this... but I still don't think I would've expected what I got, which is... roots punk, if that's a thing? Minutemen with a bit of early REM overlaid on them? Whatever it is, it seemed good.
Had never heard of this band or record before. Didn't mind it at all, but not sure I'd bother to go back. Slightly rough, ragged texture appealed to me, In My mind was pretty good
Yeah fine
How was I not listening to this in '89? These songs are crisp, short and sweet, and just an all around fun listen. A little jangle, a little burn, a little funk, a little twang. Somehow fIREHOSE figured out how to make an album that feels improvisational and jammy in the best way, without actually being jammy at all. I enjoyed it. Fave Songs: What Gets Heard, Más Cojones, Some Things, The Softest Hammer, Time With You, In My Mind
The intros to the first three tracks tease talking heads level post punk then descend into something very weird. It then kind of blooms in the last third
Good sound at times but nothing stood out
I liked the running joke with the drummer’s songs, but otherwise it’s pretty forgettable.
Not sure how I feel; some of it I like (Vastopol), but I think overall it just misses for me.
Fairly unremarkable although not unpleasant.
This is an album that exists
GREAT drums And some great riffs sprinkled throughout Worthwhile listen Spotify inexplicably flagged every song here as explicit..? Even the drum solo?
It wasn't bad, but it also didn't really make an impression on me. I'm not surprised that I've never heard of them. I imagine that most people forget about them as soon as they're done listening. Best track: The Softest Hammer
Bom.
I'm not sure how to characterize this album but it was an interesting listen. I enjoyed a few songs quite a lot, mostly those more on the indie rock side. If you like progressive rock, alternative and punk this is it.
Interesting.
Surprised. 3.49 but rounding down.
A mix of folk and punk, with really good songs. (6/10) FT: Riddle of the Eighties, In My Mind
It's no Minutemen, but these guys still deserve some love.
3/5 nothing stuck
Solid album.
solid punk album
Angular post-punk, probably very influential but it felt a little slight to me. One track sounds like Seinfeld slap-bass made into a song.
Interesting, some proper melt solos and stuff, but really quite odd
Nothing stood out much, kinda boring
There was a period in 1992 when I was trying to get into fIREHOSE. I listened to one album or another and it just didn't do it. I think the issue is that Flea kept naming Mike Watt as a big influence so I was expecting wild funk-punk but fIREHOSE is not that. It's ok and I was happy to listen to the album. But it's just not captivating. Bonus points for the band name, capitalisation and album title connection.
Correct. Pas mauvais, un mélange original de son mais pas tant groundbreaking ou impressionant
This one was unfamiliar to me but had some songs I liked. The ones I liked best were Riddle of the Eighties, In My Mind, Time with You, and Understanding.
Rock alternativo.
Some catchy moments, but then I’d lose interest.
I cant remember. i think it was meh.
It sounded like proto-Primus, in a way. I liked it, and thought it was interesting for sure. But I probably won’t be coming back to this project much.
Short jagged country funk post punk? Whatever it is - I like it. Best Tracks: What Gets Heard; Time With You; Some Things
funk fusionish idk 3.5
Bit weird, pretty good.
fIREHOSE was as good a crawling from the wreckage of the Minutemen as one could expect. 3.5
Didn't realize they stemmed from the Minutemen. Hurley and Watt are dynamite. Solid album.
Sorry Ed, but your vocals really are not good enough for Fromohio to work like it should. Admittedly most tracks sound extremely catchy, but I find nothing worth listeneing too again except In My Mind because the instrumentals are honestly exceptional. 3/5.
It was ok
Ok, aber mir zu Bass-lastig
I like the folk influence here, but overall its nothing really that special. Still good though.
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Riddle Of The Eighties, In My Mind, Liberty For Our Friend, If'n Cutting Edge: Time With You Overall Notes: With that name, that album cover, and that title (which took me wayyyyy too long to realize was just "from ohio"), I was fully bracing myself for another self-important post-punk shitshow. Imagine my surprise when the first two songs are fun little guitar ditties. Not a classic by any means and I'm very surprised it's on this list (no song has over 150k plays on Spotify as of the writing of this review) but it was a fun low stakes album with short songs that don't overstay their welcome. If we're grading how much it surpassed my expectations, 5 stars easily. Unfortunately, objectively this album is a 3 for pretty good.
Sounds like a compilation … doesn’t feel coherent as a whole piece … which kind of matters when thinking of these albums as an experience Some enjoyable songs … nice bass …
Interesting mix of rockabilly, post-punk, a touch of reggae, new wave, folk, and hard rock. There's obvious influences from the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Police, and '70s commercial rock. I'm honestly not sure if I like it or if it's really boring. It's very proto college rock in a lot of ways. There's nothing here that's terribly innovative. The bass work however, is truly outstanding.
Had some cool songs I enjoyed. Revisit.
Yup these boys can ay. I do hear a lot of the Minutemen signature sound but with more of a singer/songwriter, almost folk sound. Liberty For Our Freind sounds like a Woody Guthrie song. A fine album. 3 🌟
album art does this album dirty, kinda generic but some good ones on there too, I think if I had been doing more active listening I would've saved a couple of them
Pretty fun
Pretty cool, ahead of it's time maybe
Pretty rad.
Decent lofi alt rock. There is a rip-off of sunflower river blues by John fahey
Bangerrrsss
Knew of fIREHOSE as a Minutemen fan but never really gave them a listen. Some typically solid playing from the rhythm section, and the singer/guitarist is different enough from Boon that they have their own identity. That said, it sounds like an average SST release, and it drags more than a 30-minute record should.
Fun and a little angsty
Kind of forgettable acoustic and folky rock
Didn't grab my attention but nothing wrong with it
I had never heard of this band before, and none of the songs sounded familiar. There were some tracks that I found interesting and enjoyable, and others that I would not listen to again.
Favorites: Liberty For Our Friend
curti
This is a challenging one for me. I was really into a lot of this record, especially the first few tracks. It reminded me of a math-rock Athens, Georgia group. They could have fit right in with early R.E.M. and the Flat Duo Jets, maybe with a little Television. But the bass playing was not my cup of tea, although I'm sure Flea would have loved it. I'll still give it a positive rating though! Fav Tracks: In My Mind, Riddle of the Eighties and Vastopol (Elizabeth Cotton?). Ratin 2.5/5
Decent. Can tell its from the same era as all the old west coast punk that I like, but with the basslines it's a bit more like Fugazi etc, and it kinda has folk music influences at times. Definitely also tool inspiration from The Doors. 3/5
Prety average
Nice rock, but didn´t hit me.
sorta forgettable, not sure this has a ton for me
Fromohio, czyli rokowanie klasyczne z lat 90 w ktorym czuc punkowego ducha lat 90 hameryki, skladem gitarka, basik, drumy, skromnie ale qualitnie, zwlaszcza pan na basie wyczynia rzeczy ktore niewielu basiorowych mistrzow potrafi wyczyniac, minimalistyczna strona instrumentalna wplywa takze na to jak lirycznie wyglada plyta, bo jest przepelniona solowkami instrumentali i zdarzaja sie traki bez zadego wokalu po ktorych sa takie w ktorych chopaki spiewaja jednym glosem caly kawalek, 14 trackow przy 31 minutach w ktorych sie zawiera calosc vynylowa to dosc malo, ale jednoczesnie wystarczajaco zeby zaprezentowac skille jakimi wladaja grajkowie, dodatkowo jest to dosc standardowy czas albumiku lpka kasetowego, najbardziej popularnego nosnika wsrod punkarskiego rokowania tamtego okresu
Sin más.
This isn't my favorite type of music but I liked it for what it was. I think other bands are similar that I like more but there are also ones that I like less.
The album gets better the more you listen to it. Definitely tuned in to it’s uniqueness by the end of the album. Nothing that gives me a huge sargasso but maybe I have too high of experience for music.
Some of the songs have a really good sound - some of them I had to skip (If'n; Some Things)
Kind of indie, but nothing incredible
Interesting album. I like the instrumentation (lead, bass, drums), and the melodies are cool. Nothing in here appealed to me dramatically, but I would listen to it again. 3 stars.
Interesting album and mix of genres, worth listening again
Yea was alright
Ehhhh
Not only did I not need to hear from this band, I did not need to hear this album. It's a decent enough rock album. There are no hooks. You're never going to hear this on the radio. This is not commercially viable. I'll bet this album sold like mad in their hometown. Outside of Ohio (I assume that's where they're from), this is obscure and forgettable. Dimery, you suck. This isn't an essential album in any sense of the word. The Minutemen weren't important for music as a whole, and this album even less so. Quit mythologizing people. If I need a music history lesson to understand why an album of band is essential, then IT'S NOT ESSENTIAL. My Rating: 2/5
un poco mierdón
Firehose seems an apt name for this band, as listening to them feels like being blasted by a neverending, chaotic, stream of random genre chops and changes. It's like an amateur band experimenting, trying to pin down a sound they want to explore, except with professional quality musicianship.
I found this pretty generic to hundreds of similar sounding bands from the time that did not make the list, so I am really not sure what makes this stand out above them. This was entirely forgettable. Standout song was What Gets Heard. 2 stars
2.5
Jangly, folkish, acoustic guitar. Semi talking heads on track 2
This is aggressively mid, generic, forgettable music. How is this essential?
Highlights: In My Mind, Wisherin’ While Hollerin’. 2.1
I have never heard of Firehose. So this is all new to me. Thoughts after listening 3 times ... While listening, I checked out wikipedia and noticed that these guys were the successor band to Minutemen after one of their members died. I have 2 liked songs on Spotify by Minutemen but I don't remember when or why I encountered those. When I first saw 14 songs I thought maybe it was a double album but then I realized it was only 32 minutes long. So the average song is just about 2 1/4 minutes long. It all goes by very quickly. Unfortunately a lot of it is fairly forgettable. Also, none of these songs had their lyrics on Spotify so I was having a hard time figuring out what any of these songs are about. I did end up liking 5 songs - "Riddle of the Eighties", "In My Mind", "Vastopol", "Time With You" and "Understanding". The first 2 songs have a pretty good vibe but it sort of drops off from there with a few good ones sprinkled throughout the rest of this. Even these songs that I liked are "good" but not "great". Also - the songs I didn't like aren't necessarily "bad" - but not worth popping up on my playlists in the future. It's all mostly just "ok". Liked songs on Spotify: 5/14 Rating: 2/5
Certainly an album with music
Nice yet unremarkable.
Some nice moments of lo fi charme, but all in all too inaccessible.
I've never heard of these folks! Perfectly serviceable but I don't think I needed to hear it before I died?
This was pretty ok. Glad I listened to it. Some cool background music. When it finished, I was disappointed there wasnt more.
Why must every track start with this chicka-chicka bullshit indicative of these optimistic white boy’s privileged beach-side upbringing complete with too-deep tan and bleached surfer hair? Because otherwise there are some fun rhythms, bass lines, and guitar licks as the tracks go on.
Always worth a shot to listen to a Mike watt project. But honestly this was pretty underwhelming. All the bass lines and tongue in cheekiness of Minutemen without the edge. 0 reason for this to be on the list. But shoutout Mike Watt love his bass playing.
Whatever Gueli said.
pretty forgettable. this feels like more of a jam sesh than a full album so on the whole it didn't do much for me. there are good tracks like "what gets heard" which had a deliciously funky bassline, as did much of the album, although i can't say much of this stood out. the guitar-forward tracks made my eyes glaze over whereas the bass-forward tracks at least had Something going for them. it's kind of odd. nothing about this is actively Bad it just went in one ear and right out the other, even after two listens.
I thought it was ok but nothing stood out
Jagged alternative rock and post-hardcore driven by wiry bass lines, nervy guitar interplay, restless drumming, and earnest vocals moves like a beat-up pickup truck swerving across backroads with the engine barely holding together—messy, stubbornly alive, and more emotionally engaging than technically refined. Overall exhausting to hang on and while doing so not getting sick to my stomach.
I don't believe I've ever heard of this artist before, so I'm going in totally blind. I didn't really enjoy this, though I will say it sounded like it was about 10-15 years ahead of its time. But ultimately this also felt quite forgettable.
Nothing memorable from this album for me.
This is perfectly fine but really not for me and I'm feeling kinda mean today. Very American folk but in a way that I'm not really sure why it's on this list.
Yeah, didn’t really get to into this one.
Meh
Not feeling this album or band but it's the first of this project and it's not my usual genre. Guitar is great though! It's the vocals that I'm not digging. Average white man talk/singing. Might be better of Spotify had the lyrics.
Some 90s rock with not much flavor to it. I’m not too fond of this type of stuff, but it’s not the worst.
never let them know ur next move... im not sure how to feel. i didn't think it was bad but i didn't really enjoy much of it - maybe except vastopol? even then i wasn't obsessed. and the yapping pissed me off. maybe im being harsh because ive run out of listening stamina but it's like a 2.5 just not as interesting as things ive given three...
I will get through this album (one day, probably soon - it’s playing right now). But I don’t need to finish it before I rate it because it just so perfectly fits the mold of a mediocre 1001 albums album. It’s okay, and it’s different - but it really goes through one of my ears and out the other.
Some albums make it really difficult to remember this process is based around the premise these are 1001 albums to listen to before you die. This is one of those, not because it’s horrendous (as to some degree the fact they solicit an extreme reaction means they serve a purpose), but because it’s just so mediocre. It just sounds slightly dated and on some tracks like the sound engineer has failed to balance things, so songs like In My Mind sound like the instruments are too high in the mix. Given the mediocrity of what comes before i also take issue with ‘nuf’ That Shit George’, i do not need a 30 second drum solo. Neither did i want a closing track that sounds as if its looped back to the start several times.
This was odd. Like they were trying to sound like multiple other bands but doing it badly and coming out just slightly wrong. Parts were a bit Red Hot Chilli Peppers, parts a bit REM, at one point he sounded a bit spoken-word Shatner. The drummer was frequently cymbal-obsessed (or it was just the really poor mix - sometimes you could barely hear the vocals over the instrumentation). I had never heard of the band before and have no intention of listening again. I'm not angry at it, just bemused it ended up on this list. 2/5
They’re fun! Strange album however, the great thing about Minutemen, X, Husker Du, Butthole Surfers, etc. is they took the intuitions of the 60s and injected it with the punk fury of their day, initiating the rich pinnacle of Punk’s second wave. This stuff, (done much better by say, The Replacements, who blended both intuitions to reach a blissful new high) sort of completes the circuit back to peaceful 60s folk and roots rock (sounds very much like a slightly more edgy Jackson Browne), and by even stepping over into progressive intuitions of the early 70s (Yes, King Crimson). The result is a bit bland, their earlier album Ragin’ Full On is much better, an intuition of pop punk/emo to come.
4/10
Kind of a nothing burger album... Nothing really struck me... The first concert I ever went to had Mike Watt open for Primus, TIL Mike Watt is in fIREHOSE.

“Frum-MO-he-OH?” Is that some kind of variation of bohemia? fIREHOSE is tight, for sure. It’s easy to imagine the best way to capture them, live in a small club. A lot of this would work there. Sounds like what you might get if you threw Guided by Voices, Living Colour, Little Feat and crisp production into a blender. The standout track (and the only one I’d heard before, which got a good amount of airplay on alternative rock and college radio) is “Time With You.” Like many GbV songs, a lot of these feel unfinished, only getting started towards something interesting and then they’re over. And there’s too many throwaways, in particular the (mercifully) brief drum fill tracks “Let The Drummer Have Some” and “’nuf That Shit, George.” Mostly it all seems ephemeral, nothing you’d remember to come back to once it’s over. 2-1/4 stars
listened to 3 songs
This was forgettable. It felt like listening to your friend's garage band.
Forgettable
More folky than rock
Not for me. And honestly I've heard so many better albums from the 80s
Paso mucho
there's something good here, but not good enough to warrant a higher rating,
The music is not bad, though it’s pretty forgettable.
2.5/5
I don’t really know why I didn’t connect with this. Nothing struck me as very memorable, but the sound wasn’t ever too bad?
Cool ideas, just not my bag
Only in Ohio,
80’s Alternative Rock ⭐️Time With You
The way I read this as "from-oh-hee-oh" instead of "from ohio." Sounds like a lot of stuff at warped tour. It's ok, not sure it should be on here.
This was just fine but entirely forgettable.
gets better as it goes on.
Kind of rolled over me and don't remember anything about it.
Oh great, another obscure indie rock band. At least they're American and from the 80s rather than 2000s British crap. It honestly sounds like a worse version of Husker Du to me; while they can clearly play, they just don't have the songs that the Du or REM had. I don't find myself particularly moved by anything these guys made; the vocals aren't that great and there's no real hooks that stick with you. The songs are all very short, which compounds their lack of staying power. This isn't really a genre where you can cast songs aside to showcase instrumental virtuosity, and that's exactly what this album does. And it's not even virtuosity; it's just mildly impressive playing. No college rock record should have drum solos, but this has two. Leave the drum solos to 70s hard rock bands, people! I've heard better playing from bands, especially metal bands, that have better songs(at least in my humble opinion). With that in mind, while this is far from a terrible record, it just isn't good or distinctive enough to be worth my while. Given the band's obscurity, I wouldn't call them essential at all. So why are they here?
Again, why is this here? Just some rather drab indie rock?
Forgettable.
Meh, it didn’t interest me. Next
Its not bad, it just is. I cant imagine someone going home specifically to put on this album because it speaks to them on some deep level. The good news is this is better than about 70% of the absolute ass on this list. So theres that.
Well, yeah, I guess??
Very forgettable album, albeit fine to listen to. Nothing to hate and nothing to love.
More bullshit
I was wondering why I didn't listen to the album whole and it was forever left in a limbo, but now I remember. It is just that boring.
hows this ended up on here then. a little interesting i guess but mostly just bad
Incredicly genric punk not trying to do anything with their sound... At least it was short mid 2
very short, very forgettable. the only thing this album has going for them well is the instrumentation, the vocals and lyrics are whatever. the album feels fast but not really energetic.
it's alright if not slightly irritating at times. no idea why this is here and not any of their way better albums but ok i guess. "what gets heard" made me want to blow my head off.
Extremely boring album. Only two or three salvageable songs and the rest are some.of the boring and forgettable songs ever.
fIREHOSE formed after D. Boon's accidental death brought an end to Minutemen. The remaining members brought in a new guitarist and started fIREHOSE. Their music was good but not great. Not on par with Minutemen. It's not bad music, but it has no place on this list. As such, I'm giving it 5 out of 10 and rounding down. Sorry fIREHOSE, I actually like you, but you're simply "good not great". (I saw these guys my freshman year at UNC at the Student Union of all places (not a normal place for concerts), while The Cat's Cradle was temporarily closed. I believe they performed with the Screaming Trees.)
Mid imo
It was okay but not up my lane.
I know people love it. But I didn't
This is a weird one. The songs range from pretty fun and creative (In My Mind, Time With You, If’n) to honestly pretty stupid (Liberty For Our Friend, Mas Cojones, the two completely unnecessary drum interludes). I appreciate the tight grooves and awesome basslines that backline most of these songs, but there just isn’t really that much keeping me engaged apart from a few standouts. Every song has like an awesome part or two, but kind of lags in the other sections. Like Understanding: if the songs was all like the groovy melodic part then I would be totally on board—but it’s momentum just dies when all the instrumentation cuts out for long portions.
M’oui
Meh. Didn't finish. It started off OK but I got annoyed about halfway through. It felt whiny/need or something like that.
Okay I guess. It was pretty unfocused, switching between post-punk and 70s era rock. Didn't love it.
This music happened while I was away from listening and raising children. Probably why I don’t like it.
- kieltämäti vähä kiinnostaa että millä meriiteillä tää on päässy listalle - tästä kuuluu semmosta 80-luvun grungehenkisyyttä mutta hyvin kesy lähestymistapa kyllä siihen ajatusmaailmaan - ihan kivaa kikkailua mutta ei tätä ehkä koko levyllistä jaksa kuunnella
only okay
A case study in just because an album contains a lot of great elements, doesn't mean it's enjoyable
