Reviews (page 6 of 7)

It wasn’t bad at all but made basically no impact on me. Nothing too engaging.

If it were 10-20 years earlier it might be notable, but as it is…

Bit of a shrug of an album, really. There’s some genuinely tidy guitar work—bright, nimble, and occasionally surprising—but it’s paired with vocals that feel slightly off‑kilter in a way that doesn’t always land. Nothing here is bad, but not much sticks, either. The saving grace is the runtime: it breezes by quickly enough that the quirks never get time to turn irritating. Pleasant in patches, forgettable overall.

More like a 2.5 I did like this

Nieko nepamenu, bet nebuvo blogai.

Half funky 80s college rock, half...Eagles? An easier comparison would be the Meat Puppets due to the acoustic guitar and alt rock combo, but there's a distinct classic rock feel on songs like "Time With You" that's key to this album's sound. The acoustic guitar is an interesting companion to the funky bass that's prominent on tracks like "Whisperin While Hollerin." It's a cool combo, but the album mostly leaves me thinking about what could have been. Much like the Minutemen's songs, the tracks here feel more like sketches than songs, playing around with cool sounds and creative playing but lacking memorable or exciting moments. The desire to experiment also comes through on the drum solo and instrumental folk interludes, though those also don't add much and kind of disrupt the flow. A lot of interesting ideas here, but not all that much substance.

Knew very little about this band except Mike watt was in it. No tracks really stood out to me though.

Hmm… this is hard to really love. There are moments on here, but they are few

извините, но очередной ноунейм, безвкусно

Enjoyable if not entirely memorable. This really felt like Minutemen, lo-fi and short songs, but just not as good.

Some irrelevant Rock.

Had to drop this down one as it's a bit of a slog despite its short length and disappointing considering this kind of angular indie rock (a-side) and jangly power pop (b-side) is completely up my street

mouaif

So many new wave post punk albums in this list that feel like they cover similar ground. This one didn’t resonate with me at all.

What this lacks in interest it makes up for in brevity. Hints of Primus, Tom Waits, but the most positive thing I can say about this is that it was a fairly painless 31 minutes.

I don’t understand this one, really not sure how it made the list. Pretty boring with some good riffs. Doesn’t even really feel before it’s time.

Given that this 2/3 of the Minutemen this felt like a letdown when it was released and I'm still not a fan of it

Struggled to get through it and listen fully. I'll come back to it one day.

Notes of early REM, Violent Femmes. Great musicianship. Songs ok. My rating 2.3

So, whatever one-hit-wonder came from this album, I don’t believe justifies its place on this list. Or maybe the band is related to one of tue book editors, and they were like “you know, Jeff and Bill have been out in the garage practicing those songs so much. They deserve to have everyone listen to this album before they die.” It wasn’t very good, it wasn’t very exciting, and it wasn’t very unique.

Outside of "In My Mind" this was forgettable. When the final few tracks started I thought this was making a turn for the better, but ultimately those songs also we're forgettable.

😰😰😰no bops?... No feels no badump badump??... Don't waste my goddamn time

It's okay. Good 2.

2 - some cool guitar but nothing memorable

Baffling as to why this is here

weird in a bad way

Not bad, but nothing remarkable.

Not sure about that folky twangy sound.

Eh, not my favorite.

most tracks in this album sound good at first... then when I hear words, i'm immediately taken out of it. i appreciate the midwest math rock instrumentation a lot.

I love the Minutemen. I love Mike Watt. I really liked Ragin' Full On (even though it was quite clearly NOT the Minutemen). I really wanted to like this just as much, but I just... don't. It's not bad, it just doesn't have anything that sticks to my ear. Some interesting parts here and there but mostly forgettable. Maybe it's a multiple listens type of album before it gets you?

Different to anything I've listened to so far on the list. Very experimental, garage-band style with a variety of sounds. Most of it wasn't for me, but a couple of cool tracks enough to give it a rating of 2.

Interesting, not compelling.

Interesting. Kind of good college or maybe even high school rock band stuff. But not amazing.

Nice and short thankfully.

Hey, some contributor snuck their college band's album in here.

Started out with more jangly pop than I expected at first. And then it became something else. I remember a bass-playing friend in the 90s was a fan of Minuteman/Firehose. I can see why - a lot of "cool" bass riffs (that impresses aspiring bass players)( and pounding drums, but lacking in songwriting. The influences ... could come from anywhere – Fela Kuti, funk, new wave, Television. Maybe that's the point but to me it sounds disparate and not cohesive. It's quite hard to see a red thread - a taste and a vision. Just three people making sound, bassplayer and drummer a little too keen to show their abilities. 2/5

This was not what I was expecting. Half of it was good, half of it was not. One of the singers had a good voice, the other did not.

It's definitely early indie rock! My least favorite part was when they got one of the band-mate's dad to record some weird ass vocal to mix into the track like five times. "Fetchin' beats retchin' like scratchin' cures itchin'" ????? That being said, the album did make me feel like I was in Ohio! Unfortunately, Ohio fuckin sucks.

01) Riddle of the Eighties - 6,0 02) In My Mind - 6,0 03) Whisperin' While Hollerin' - 5,5 04) Vastopol - 5,5 05) Más Cojones - 5,0 06) What Gets Heard - 6,0 07) Let the Drummer Have Some - / 08) Liberty for Our Friend - 6,5 09) Time With You - 5,5 10) If’n - 5,5 11) Some Things - 5,5 12) Understanding - 6,0 13) 'Nuf That Shit, George - / 14) The Softest Hammer - 6,0 TOTAL: 5,75 (58/100) Current ranking: 588/709

This was fine. Not great. Not bad. Just fine. Won’t likely ever listen again. So I’m going just below the line at 2.95

I could tell this musically was a good album but just wasn’t my thing. I did enjoy the guitar, tho!

Yeah. You know how the Americans are always whingeing about Britpop on here? Well there an awful lot of unmemorable underwhelming American ‘alternative rock’ offerings Just saying

A couple of good tracks. The vocals are a bit meh

Entertaining but insufficient

Not unpleasant but on the other hand nothing tha made me want to listen again

As someone who is from Ohio, this album is about as exciting as visiting, and living in Ohio. At least it's creative. Favorite Track: "In My Mind"(unfortunately, Ohio is stuck in my mind now).

Perfectly fine, but I fail to see how this would be essential in any way or why I should listen to this again instead of something really interesting

Inventive alt punk but it feels like it doesn't belong in this.

Weird and inconsistent

Я не очень люблю Minutemen в первую очередь, и как бы был изначально настроен на "э". И вот как бы да, яркие гитары, все такое, чувствуется какое-то влияние Talking Heads, вроде бы всё как я люблю, а песни просто мимо. Лучшая песня - Liberty for Our Friend.

There are several funky moments on this record - has the vibe of a bunch of dudes jamming in their garage on a Saturday afternoon. There’s some decent guitar work and great bass lines, but overall ends up largely forgettable. 2/5

So this is the definition of college radio. Having growing up in the 90's this music always felt so dated to me. The Primus the ween etc played this trope to death. The stoner dick joke music. I will say these guys have a bit more diversity in music, but it's just nothing I can listen to.

It’s an easy listen but forgettable.

4/10 - nothing memorable, just ok, but not hardcore punk as I expected

Indie Garage-Band rock. Reminds me a bit of a less polished version of Vampire Weekend.

Garage band - at best.

This is all over the place.

Could barely remember what I'd listened to

Rather boring. The funky bassline on some songs save it a little bit.

Completely unknown to me, and not sure what I think of it. The songs on this all have an aspect that i quite like, whether that is a riff, the bass line, the drums; but the other parts of the songs are just a bit pants. I do enjoy that the Wikipedia summary for the album seems to have been written by a ten year old: "It's called that because it's from Ohio".

Kind of chilled out rock that sounds like it should have come out earlier than 1989. I have never heard of them but it isn't bad, some variety in the music and lyrics. Nothing really stands out, it might be nice for a party mix so it doesn't distract. Probably wouldn't be high on my list to listen to but I enjoyed it.

3/10 - repetitive - hard to hear lyrics - good bass

FromOhio from fiREHOSE makes the 1001 Must Hear List because of the stylized band name, Liberty For Our Friend, and the drum work on the album. It’s a decent album, nothing great. Listened to it twice, second time (which is usually a score raiser) was just OK. (2,3*s)

It's ok, but it didn't blow me away.

It wasn't bad, but I didn't enjoy it. Entirely forgettable even a couple hours after listening to it.

Not a clue mate. Okay its less noisy than I was expecting from the cover and indeed their stylisation Idk man its very stripped back uhhh. I can tell theres some good musicians here but it just didn't hold my attention at all

There was nothing technically wrong with the album. The musicianship was fine. The singing was okay. But I found the songs to be boring. I kept waiting to hear a great hook or riff, but nothing happened.

So far on this project, even if I don't vibe with the particular genre of an album, I've at least understood why it's on the list. Not with this one though. It's not bad, but there's nothing at all that stands out about it - just a pretty standard post-punk album. Fav tracks - Some Things

Had some decent guitar riffs but this was pretty indistinguishable for me and I don’t think there’s much chance I ever go back to anything here.

Just a compilation of guitar, drums and nonsensical lyrics that don't really amount to an interesting project or memorable songs. Wouldn't say there's anything horrific, but it does become really hard to listen to after like 4 songs. 2.5/5 ⭐⭐1/2

Couldn’t get into this as much as I thought I would like it from reading up on these guys. Some nice bass playing but nothing memorable tracks wise.

not bad, some rly fun guitar in this, but didn’t do anything for me, kinda forgettable

Sounds like a less-polished version of the alternative bands I loved in the 90s.

Not for me

Not a fan

Not for me

Not a vital album.

There are dozens of worthy albums, from Modest Mouse, Tool, Ween, Neutral Milk Hotel, Ryo Fukui, and more that didn't make this list, yet this one did?

Well… at least it was only 30 minutes

Is it a mix of random studio recordings? "Hey John, I've got an idea for a riff!" "Yeah? Show it!" And that's how it goes

Tough to really explain my thoughts on this one, but fIREHOSE feels like one of those "Your favorite band's favorite band" bands. Like, they are hitting on a lot of good ideas in this record, but none of them really coalesce into good music? And your favorite band was able to take what they heard from fIREHOSE and repackage it into good music. Like I don't know if they were influenced by fIREHOSE, but some of Fromohio reminds me of Sunny Day Real Estate, just without the emo? A touch southern rock or country meets late 80's indie rock. It's tough to describe though, but I always went up to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan as a kid for vacation, and this music reminds me of the feeling of crossing the Mackinac Bridge on the way home from vacation and you get into the lower peninsula where the grass is just more brown, its hotter, and you don't see the lakes anymore. Just a vibe of returning back to life after having a great time. Weird analogy, but that's what popped into my head. Dry, hot music that while isn't sad, just makes me sad.

This album feels like a jam session in the basement of the drummer's mom. Casual and a bit rough around the edges. They’re not that bad, but it didn’t really hit me in the feels.

Nothing special here - they should work on their capitalization and spacing.

It was ok. It grew on me as the album went on. Probably not something I'll return to, but if it was playing on the radio, I'm not gonna change the station.

Nice indie/pop-rock album. Good for a first listen. Did not make me a fan, but I wouldn't mind listening to it again. I liked "Vastopol", because it was purely acoustic with a nice fingerpicking pattern, but I later found out it was a cover. The original song is from Elizabeth Cotten. I liked some of the bass lines of the album, but nothing really stuck to me. Surprisingly, the song I liked the most was "Understanding" (nice drums, bass and voice) and not "Riddle of the Eighties" nor "In My Mind", which were the most streamed. Overall, a good 2/5. Not too shabby, but not the best album I've heard.

Ничего примечательного

Definitely merit here, but not my thing.

I listened to the whole thing, but can't really remember too much about what I heard...as Shania always says: it don't impress me much.

It was like Red Hot Chili Peppers meets Dispatch

Bait and switched me with the intro. It was interesting and then became cliche and boring :(. Listened whole way through was not impressed.

Why? Completely uninteresting in both sound and message. I went to grad school in a small, dusty farm town in Ohio at about the time this was released. I could’ve heard something like this at the college bar on Main Street. No thanks. If I had to recommend a song? Maybe “Liberty for Our Friend.” But, again, why?

interesting pick for this list, not a big fan from the start but still an entertaining listen. highlight was In My Mind

bland and empty for now

Not sure this album knows what it wants to be. Feels like it keeps trying different things in each song and is never really cohesive. Multiple filler tracks on a 30 minute album is also very embarrassing. Some of the songs do work, but they feel more like accidents than a cohesive musical vision. Top tracks: Some Things, Understanding

É ruim? Não. É bom? Também não. Podia ser muito pior, na real.

Not bad just not memorable in the slightest

Man, I love opening up this site and being hit with a tangible feeling of "what the fuck?" whenever I see these kinds of albums grace my screen. This is yet another album I would not listen to in a million, billion years were it not for this site. Far be it from me to complain. There's a beauty in the sheer unlikelihood of these melodies ever gracing my ears. I'll cherish them. Liberty For Our Friend is the best song on the album. It's the only time where the vocals and songwriting really work. There isn't much else to say about the album, really. I think this may be the first time in the history of this site where I'm at a loss of words for what to say. The vocals and instruments never amount to anything beyond mildly pleasing. It's fortunate that this album is only half an hour as it would seriously overstay it's welcome were it any longer. That being said, for what it is it's listenable enough. As alluded to previously, I consider this a "nowhere album" - a term I have not busted out in a very, very long time. I usually have a clear image of the kind of "nowhere" that these albums occupy, though I'm not so sure with this one. I guess this album captures the feeling of walking barefoot along a paved road in the midwest, following the power lines as I wander through nature reserves and vast open plains. In any case, this album is not popular, acclaimed, influential or experimental as far as I can gleam. I'll do what I always do and consult the entry for this album, though it's not looking promising for this one. A precursor to grunge without being an influence of it. Uhhh, yeah. I'll skimp on this album. Adios, fROMOHIO. Into the record shredder you go. For your replacement I would like to humbly induct The Moon and Antarctica by Modest Mouse into the list.

Es war nicht schlecht aber kam mir vor wie ein Demo Tape und nicht wie ein Album.

It's not unpleasant, and the drummer had some chops... Otherwise, boring, sloppy, uninteresting. Why is this on the list?

Not horrible but nothing really grabbed my attention. Luckily it's a short album.

Snappy guitar playing, bland everything else.

I expected worse from the cover and names. Never heard of this band. Stealing another user's review. "not bad at all yet completely forgettable at the same time."

Another new band and record for me. Found it quite tinny and jangley. Production felt messy and badly mixed without much skill or pleasure. Pretty simple, uninspiring and not too pleasurable to listen to at all. Kind of like a bad mix between raw punk, deep blue something and knock off Primus. I do value that they seemed to give themselves some creative freedom with surprises and unconventional elements throughout but mostly just sounds like some kids jamming or trying out instruments in a soundcheck. Nice to have some drum solos featured (although probably to just lengthen the shortness of the album!) Everything feels like it could have potential and is just done so poorly. Vocals painful at times. Turn that guitar down! Urgh. Relief when is got through the offensive listening experience.

Very forgettable

not for me...

Hmm nei

Track 1: "We've got R.E.M. at home!" From there it felt like this was a band that still hadn't figured out its own style, and should have spent more time in the garage before going to the studio.

Hmm... There are some splashes of interesting flavor here, but nothing ever gels... Unsatisfying... Like having a few bites at a buffet and leaving hungry... Disappointing... A taste of honey is worse than none at all...

This was ok. There is nothing here that I would consider noteworthy, or repeatable. I will probably forget about this album in about a week.

какие-то концептуальные коротыши вперемешку с хуй пойми чем

One of those seminal bands that I don't mind at all. High 2s.

Jag trodde här har jag ett fynd vid första låten. Tyvärr klarade jag inte av det mer än en kvart

Who? The fact that the band stylized their name as "fIREHOSE" rang alarm bells for me, as did the stylized name of the album "fROMOHIO". The longest track is 3m 16s, and the album sounds like a collection of unfinished demo tracks. Musically, they're all over the place, and nothing really stands out or grabs my attention.

Pretty bland and inoffensive. Not "bad bad", but nothing particularly interesting or stimulating. Don't really get how it's on this list, to be honest.

Kort og intenst, post punk, alternativ rock, masser af hurtig tromme

This immediately looks like it came out last year and it is making the rounds through the “theneedledrop” subreddit. May whichever deity is in charge this week wash me of the sin of saying any of the words in the previous sentence. Darn my eyes. Uh yeah this really does look like a moody millennial playing even moodier music targeted towards the Gen Z. BUT, it’s none of those things. It’s from 1989 and I have never ever heard of it. This could be anything from chamber music to torture chamber field recordings. Let’s go to Ohio. Ohhhh it’s members of the Minutemen. This could be cool. Well. It’s not really. This track is country tinged, and ultimately? Kinda boring. Noooo. Why have you forsaken me? This sounds like the cassette note that a director made when brainstorming ideas for a movie montage. “Yeah it should sound kind of like this. Better but you get the picture.” The bass is very good here. Massive groove. The singing is whatever but this one was the kind of fun I would expect from a project involving members of the band that wrote “Viet Nam.” Oh boy. A real field recording. I know this isn’t a field recording. I’m just a cool fuckin ALPHA with a punisher tattoo in my FACE who loves to TRIGGER the music community. I mean this is pretty cool. What can I say? We’re improving here. YES. Now this is cool. I’m going to jam a few song reviews together here, making this already unreadable format even less readable. What Gets Heard and the drum solo are excellent. Liberty for Our Friend however? Stinkpile. Add it to the dumpster barge headed up the Great Lakes. Hopefully to meet the same fate as the uh *burp* Ella Fitzgerald. I’m a young guy moving to the big city. I sure as sugar miss all my friends back home. But! I’ve got faith on my side and by golly somehow we’re gonna make it!! This sucked. If’n you might speed this thing up. It’s been like 15 minutes and I want it to go away forever. This should be so much better than it is. Does that even make sense? Yeah this is really putting the emphasis on IRE that I believe it intended. I am not “understanding” most of this album so far. This song is fine. I guess. The vocals still aren’t my thing, but this feels slightly better during the quietude. No, George. Keep going. This is the good stuff. Ugh. This sucks. A boring anthemic closer. This poses the question of why? Why close the album this way? Were there enough ideas here for an album? That’s what I found myself thinking throughout most of this. There were cool Minutemen style jams surrounded by weird, lame, out of date 80’s pop rock. I wanted way more of the former and way less of the latter, but to no mercy was granted by the boys of fIREHOSE. I don’t hate what came off here but I don’t like it either. This album felt stretched to its limit, even at a 31 minute run time and it’s messy in an unlikable way. The flourishes of musical brilliance are almost insults, considering what the rest of the album forced me to endure. Not enough going on here and yet way too much. This album could’ve stayed as a vague idea in the heads of its creators, because that’s really all it ended up being. Whisk me across the Erie back to the kinder shores of Canada, far away “FROMOHIO.” 1.5-2 HIGHLIGHTS: Whisperin’ While Hollerin’, What Gets Heard

I didn't understand this. It wasn't bad. It wasn't anything really.

Pretty annoying on first listen. Slightly less annoying on subsequent listens but didn't get a lot out of it.

I enjoyed a few songs. Many of them sounded the same and ran together if it weren’t for the pauses in between.

twas ok

Not my cup of tea - some songs had good parts.

I mean, it’s pretty, but it’s not like I feel like I need to own it. It’s an interesting stepping stone from The Minutemen and the vocals are lovely and soaring but blah blah blah. Yeah I didn’t need it.

Listened to this while playing Endless Winter solo. I lost. Super meh. Both the loss and this album.

This has to one of those albums you had to be there for. As far as indie rock goes, I found it to be woefully unremarkable and also have never heard of this band outside the context of this book, so I'm assuming their importance must have been quite limited. Given the title, I'm actually surprised this didn't become popular with the zoomer brainrot crowd.

Boring

Kind of sounds like a cross between Primus, Minutemen, Talking Heads and Brainiac. I would rather just listen to any of those bands instead. This doesn't belong on the list and I would have preferred to not listen to this

This project is called Albums you Need to Hear before you die. Well, I could have died very peacfully Even if I had Never Heard this „thing“. Not because the music is especially bad but it is one of the Most generic, boring and uninspired sounding Albums i have ever heard. Mans more exciting Albums could have taken its Place

If you'd discover this band by randomly walking into a pub with the occasional amateur band night, and they happened to be playing, it would have been a nice discovery and a decent experience. A decent amateur band is however not what I would call a "must listen to before you die".

The same sloppy bass line gets old fast. Very redundant and not enjoyable.

I could see why Mike Watt is an influential bass player but this wasn't really my jam.

Not terrible but would never listen to them on purpose again.

Ermm it's OK Best track is Liberty for our Friend its quite catchy

Bored me a little.

not offensive or anything but *shrug*

I liked quite a lot of this, but think they tried to do too much, instead of 14 short tracks the should have focused on 7 or 8. Put their creative talents to the test and made them 4-5 minutes long instead of 2-3, and it could have been an excellent album. Instead what you get is basically a sampler. Which became disappointing. Even so part of me wants to give it a 3, but can't really justify it when compared to others that have only received a 2. It is a high 2 though, about 2.8 I'd say.

I listened to it twice and still don’t know what to write. I can’t even work out if I like it. I guess that means I don’t really like it that much, otherwise I’d be saying I like it.

This is another band who I should have heard of but probably haven't, although, i have listened to MINUTEMEN back in the day. It could have been a review in the NME that may have put me off them in the first place. On first listen, it fell somewhere between Math Rock and the Eagles. Maybe that is why I didn't bother first time round. But on the whole it was ok with just enough of an edge to keep me happy.

#491. This album is boring, from start to finish. Probably shouldn't have expected much, as everything from Ohio is awful. 2/5: yawn

But if a non-event really

2 sterne

a little on the punk side

Another introduction to me. Nice riffs ("In My Mind"...), nice basslines ("Whisperin While Hollerin"...), nice short tracks. But overall for me is something missing especially more remarkable vocals?! Strong two stars for this album. 2,5

Never heard of them before this, and I probably won’t hear of them in the future again

I didn't really understand most of this. At its peak there were some Les Claypool-esque moments I enjoyed but they were pretty few and far between.

I'm not cool enough to like this

Slightly shonky home recorded college-rock.

Extremely mediocre.

The whole album sounds like they were testing out a bunch of potentially good songs, but instead of finishing the work, they decided to release the half-baked, incomplete versions of the songs on an album. 2 stars

I'm sure it's fine, just not my kind of fine.

Not for me. Kind of twee (derogatory), I guess?

Its fatal flaw: this is very boring. And there's two separate drum solos! At least the runtime is short. Listened a second time and am a bit more positive on this, but still not convinced it's essential listening. Favourite song: Time With You

As a Michigander, I am naturally opposed to anything from Ohio. I don’t like generic rock anyway so blegh.

It's fine. Didn't like it a whole lot.

Do not understand this pick...

This is the type of shit that starts playing when you accidentally leave Youtube autoplay on throughout the night. Not even bad or anything, just astronomically uninteresting in every possible way.

Sounds like a bunch of unfinished unpolished songs made on a rush and was put together in an album.

I can't say I have heard of fIREHOSE before but they have a familiar sound. It's one of those albums you don't dislike but neither do you like well for me anyway. Stand out tracks: - Vastopol - If'n - some things - The softest hammer

It feels like an album full of ideas that just weren't fleshed out. The mix feels muddy at times. The bass player absolutely carries the album, but that only goes so far. I thought this was going to be a promising one when the 1st song was playing, but there's a lot of nothing going on in this album.

Meh, not for me

A great bass player can only get a band so far. Most of these songs were a diddling, scratching, low-fidelity mess. 2/5

Nothing special.

This was vaguely like Primus but less listenable

Easy to listen to but really forgettable. I´m unsure about what kind of impact this album made to make it so important and on this list?

Not really that interesting to me, it's a boring listen and it feels repetetive. Best song: Time With You Worst song: Some Things

Never heard of them and I’m pretty sure I kept mispronouncing their name in my head (think rhymes with Pinocchio). They were ‘fine’ although I’ve completely forgotten every word/riff/melody. Okay but underwhelming.

I’m not bad, but I have never heard of them before. They don’t add anything to my life at this point.

There wasn't anything I particularly enjoyed about this, and the guitar work (and vocals) actively bothered me in places. The production, unfortunately, threw everything under a microscope — there was nothing there to smooth out the edges. Perhaps by design, perhaps a matter of budget and resources, I don't know. But it added up to an album I where my anticipation of when it would end was foremost in my mind.

Vacillated between liking this and then finding it bland. Was forcing myself to enjoy and came to the conclusion, this doesn't merit list inclusion.

A bit too all over the place with few redeeming qualities

❤️❤️/5

I haven't listened to much of this before, and it just doesn't hook me. I like its elements but not the net package. I even attempted to listen to if several times and it would just fade into the background.

This is #day33 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... when I first looked at the artwork, I thought it would be some post-hardcore, but then... Yes, somebody can play the guitar. But this isn't an album I'd be willing to put on before I die. For this reason, I'm giving it a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day34.

Ihan ok, peruskakkonen

2.5 I guess

Fairly innocuous stuff. Nothing really stood out. Kind of bland rock that u forgot I was listening to something. 2.5/5

Parts of this are totally fine. The instrumentals are really interesting, and sometimes very good. I really don't like the low singer at all. His voice is very unclear and uninteresting. There's honestly some really good things in this album! And some very not good things. All-in-all, it's a fine album. I would probably leave it off my top 1001 albums, but I can understand it sneaking in at the bottom of other people's lists. Favorite Song(s): Vastopol, The Softest Hammer

How about writing a song

I expected more as I like Minute Men, but this was sadly forgettable.

This Album was just “ok”.. couldn’t get into it. Not my type of music

Listened through twice, nothing stood out as good or bad, all I can say confidently is that this album definitely exists.

Album was ok

first 10 seconds of the album gave me real excitement - i thought i was going to be listening to my next 'london' and that got ripped away from me so i listened to the album with mostly disappointment and it drags my score down and i dont care

Not for me

137/100 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

This was compelling and weird and thoroughly ruined every time the guy started talking

Noh ei yhtä anneta.. kun 30 min ja ihan ok tavaraaa..

it's music alright

I listened to this one twice through because I couldn't understand why I wasn't into it. I think what it all comes down to is that there are elements here that just don't gel. A bunch of interesting ingredients that never quite come together for me.

Too alternative

Enjoyable 90s (well 89 technically) indie rock. As a big indie rock fan I definitely enjoy it. I don't think it's particularly notable in the context of this list though which dings it for me. Also, the cover art is awful.

At the first sight of the artist's name and the album cover, I thought this was going to be some weird ass, experimental post-punk stuff. It wasn't bad, but I'll probably never listen to this album again. 2.4*

Not my thang.

As far as firehose goes I’m only a fan of “Ragin’ Full On”

Jag kan respektera det, och det fanns absolut fina stunder på albumet. Men som helhet känns det både som att det försöker så mycket, men också samtidigt som att det ger upp hela tiden. Når aldrig riktigt fram. Inte för mig. Också druckit för lite idag så mådde illa under trumspåren hell nah Bästa spår: time with you (VÄLDIGT mysig faktiskt!!)

Hmm asså vissa låtar var bra men det var så många korta låtar som inte var minnesvärda Bästa låt: In my mind

Correcto.

Dull, no idea why it's on this list

Hmmmmmmmmmmm Abzug fuer bloeden namen

Forgettable.

My genre but not my jam

in many ways, this album was unremarkable--and even the music and vocals not being bad, only average, makes it even more unremarkable. i was annoyed at firehouse's efforts to be edgy, because it wasn't even interesting. the lyrics were boring, not clever or engaging. i can't figure out why this album is here.

Okay. Why is this album on here? It was listenable, but that's about all I have to say. It's so generic and underwhelming.

I liked the 'live' sounding recording of this. Most tracks were hit and miss. Not really my thing but okay.

It had it's moments, but most of this didn't land for me. Favorite track: If'n

Nichts, was irgendwie im Ohr bleibt!

that was fun!

Appreciate what they are trying here, but doesn't land quite right for me 2.5*

Ok idea. I wasn’t a big fan of the Minutemen album, so wasn’t surprised by not really feeling this either. Some good slap, but not the kind of funk vibe I enjoy. 2/5.

I really wanted to like this one, but I just didn't get it Seems like not much was going on, except of some nice textures from the band. Just didn't feel like much at all

Sounds like a band idc about. 2.5

Album 393 of 1001 fIREHOSE - Fromohio Rating : 2.5 / 5 Listened through and I mostly remember twangy guitar punk. Just a meh. Nothing I'd go back to, on purpose.

Felt like I should have liked this more than I did. Overall just meh.

Understanding //

Sometimes I wonder how and why the albums have been chosen for this list. This is one of the case.

Not bad, but not really great. Can be talked into a 3, but it’s probably a 2

Sure. Whatever.

I thought this would be something I was really into, but I didn't connect with the music, and I found the vocals more annoying than exciting or interesting. Watt's bass playing and tone is great, but that's really the only thing I liked about it.

From 😃 to 😔 real quick, wtf was that bait in the first song... Let the Drummer Have Some is a funny title, I liked it Actually, it was alright, subpar vocals but they were not too prominent (except for the last song, and it was awful)

The way the band name was stylized, the album name and the opening riff of the first song made me cheer in my head. "Finally a different album" I thought to myself. Unfortunately, that joy was cut short as soon as they started talking and I realized it was going to be another generic and uninteresting rock album

What an odd album to include on this list. I didn’t hate it at all, but there’s really nothing about it as an album that would make me want to listen to it again. I guess this might be the reverse of the reviews I read of British bands where North Americans are confused.

This album sort of plays like the demo made by that band in every high school that every knows will make it someday. Do they ever make it? I don't know. It's disjointed, has some decent playing, horrible vocals, mediocre production, and not enough fully fleshed out songs for a record so supplements with weird noises and "instrumentals" here and there. All in all, I feel like this is an album by a (seemingly) super new band that shows some promise but never got it together. 2.5/5 rounded down to 2 because I can't think of a reason to round up.

Nothing super memorable to me... some track were like a c grade Graceland

The only thing I knew about fIREHOSE was that they were mentioned in a Red Hot Chilli Peppers song... I've just looked it up it's "Good Time Boys" off of "Mother's Milk" and they are mentioned alongside Fishbone and Thelonious Monster, so I was expecting something in the 80s funk rock vein. But this is more folky, more... local-band-who-are-kind-of-interesting. I then read their bio on Spotify and saw the bassist and drummer are the remnants of the Minutemen, who, again, I don't really know much about but I think I listened to one of their albums because I fell in love with one of their songs for a day and a half. (It's called "This ain't no picnic".) But the Minutemen were also a big deal apparently so I wonder if the kudos for fIREHOSE comes from that. Some of this album sounds melodramatic in a Pearl Jam sort of way. But it's not really for me.

Sound familiar? Two of the three members of the Minutemen started a new band. It's good punk influenced indie, but it's unnecessary to have this album on the list when Double Nickels on the Dime is already on there. Overall: 4/10

Folkissväng

Eh, it was ok. It was also the most unmemorable collected of music that I've listened to in some time.

A very average alt rock album. There was nothing in fROMOHIO that really stood out, or really captured my attention. Best: In My Mind Worst: Mas Cojones

The more I listened the less I liked it - it had some glimmers of goodness that were then sabotaged, often within the same song. Looking them up on Spotify they have the smallest regular listening group I’ve seen yet and this is not even there most popular work - so it’s a little unclear how this album makes the cut for the 1001 from any metric, regardless of my taste and (lack of) appreciation of this work. Will not be giving it another listen.

This was such a strange album. I didn't hate it, I didnt love it. I just kept listening listening to it to see if I could get into it but i didn't. It was just odd, I felt like I should have liked it, but i didn't. Im confused!

I was really confused by this album - I disliked it, but also I think I liked it a little bit? It was so incredibly annoying to listen to, but at the same time I could hear similar sounds to Primus (a band I love), and some of the guitar riffs were interesting, and I like how there was some really push and pull within the music - but then I found it unlistenable and wanted to turn it off, then a little something would pique my interest again. Urgh - a frustrating listen. Mostly it felt annoying and musically immature. Maybe if I was younger I could be bothered to listen to this on repeat for a few days and break past the annoyance barrier, but I'm too much of a grumpy old lady to listen to it more than once.

Firehose- Kind of a crappy sounding recording like homemade demos but It has some amateur charm. The music was kind of interesting.. It’s kind of all over the place though ( multiple drum solo tracks?) I like Riddle of the 80s Time with you. Some things Understanding Softest hammer I like how minimal it is with just one guitar and bass. I never heard of this band and I’m not really sure why it’s on here, would want to hear more about who this influenced. Not sure how to rate? 2? 3? 2.5 2.5

Sounds like a demo. Not sure why this is on the list, maybe it’s influential in some way but I didn’t find it very interesting. The guitar playing was ok but all the sounds were pretty bad and the mixing is terrible/nonexistent. Also didn’t like the vocals. 1.5

Somehow I missed this band in 1989. But now that I hear it, I don't feel like I missed anything. Not offensive, so above one star, but I don't think I'll seek any of it out again.

the spelling of the artist had me fooled that i would like this album a lot. not something id return to own my own

Time with you, hvað er með viðlagið þar?! Ekki beinlínis leiðinlegt en voða lítið bitastætt.

este disco no es para mi si lo escuche pero no me gusto mucho

An okay rock album, but not sure why it’s on this list

I had never heard of this band, and there wasn't much about the album that spoke to me. I wouldn't know how to categorize it, as it went from punk to rock to folk. Some songs were catchy, but as a whole it sounded under-produced. Someone's cup of tea, but not mine.

I quite liked the guitar sound but the overall package wasn't for me

Pretty milquetoast but enjoyed a lot of the guitar 🎸

This wasnt terrible but it wasnt good. No one song excited me or made me feel anything at all. A very generic alt rock album. Also not sure why every song had the explicit tag. I didnt hear a single swear word.

Nah. Not for me. Too indy coffee shopy.

Oh yeah. This one was fine but forgettable...like immediately forgettable.

Anyone else pronounce it Fromo hio? Anywho, not bad. But also pretty forgettable.

Underwhelming. Didn’t rate the songwriting.

Bland. I think my cat liked it, though.

I mean it is fine, nothing wrong with it, but nothing about it stands out. Doubt I would ever want to listen to it again.

It's ok

Beetje saai ofzo? Ik kan er de vinger niet op leggen en zou het dus nog een keer moeten draaien, maar daar heb ik dan weer geen zin in.

Ik kon hier vrij weinig mee.

Slightly proggy, slightly grungy, but struck me as more proto-jam band than anything else. Not my thing.

not great

Nothing special and I kept zoning out. It quickly became background noise.

Pretty below average album for me, no standout songs and wasn’t blown away by the band.

I am struggling to say anything about this. Some of the riffs were good but no songs were memorable

Never heard of or need to hear from again

music is still better than Ohio is a state...

A chorus or two would be nice, just feels like a bunch of guitar riffs shoved together

Rock alternativo bem chocho, foi difícil ouvir até o fim

Pretty weak, nothing grabbed me about this, but at least it had a short running time, so it wasn't unbearable.

Like a mashup of the worst parts of R.E.M. and Cake, which is a shame because I love both those bands, but I hated this...

Listened Before? N This was interesting. Just sort of a minimalist indie rock album. Not terrible. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: In My Mind

Slow start to the album with crappy vocals and *off* timing that wasn't even in a good syncopated way. I really didn't enjoy the album, but the Spotify algorithm kept rolling and did eventually play a song of their I liked that wasn't on this album: Time With You is really good.

Mostly just finding this annoying. They are all over the place and amateurish, but not in a charming way.

Overall it’s not “bad” but I really didn’t vibe with this. Honestly I couldn’t wait for it to be over halfway through, and was bored by most of the songs.

Vintage alt-rock sound from the late 80s and early 90s. Interesting college radio station fare but not even the best examples from the era. The early tracks are the best. The band has a quality overall sound and the experimentation in the latter half of the album is interesting. Overall, representative but not the most memorable or peak listening for the time, genre, or craft.

Ehhh I dunno, one of those ones so mediocre you don't feel inclined to write about.

Was very disengaged from this. Also very distracted so it's my fault, but it felt quite run of the mill and I don't have any inclination to give it another run. Production and vocals not there for me, some fun instrumental passages. Fave track: Liberty For Our Friend

Lots of energy and fun playing, but failed to really grab me in a hugely meaningful way. Was fine, and don't necessarily think it was bad in any way, just didn't quite scratch an itch like a lot of other rock from the late 80s does. Two and a half. Fave track: Time With You

jahas kakkosia kertyy aika paljon...neljoset jää.. mutta objektiivissuus pysyy VANKASTI kasassa. 1-2 minuutin pretentious bullshit biisejä. harmittaa koska tämä voisi olla hyväkin, muutama laulunpykälä voitaisiin vaikka viisinkertaistaa... 80s attention span smh... Two drum solo tracks? BRO MOLEMMAT ALLE MINUUTTI!!!!!!!! VITTU AKO VALITAT??? 10+MIN PITÄISI OLLA JOS TOMMOSTA PROJEKTIA LÄHTEE TYÖSTÄMÄÄM.....This "music" makes me physically angry. lol niin minäkin.. ei tämä albumi mutta prkl kun pitää olla objektiivinen...pistää vihaksi... (tuo henkilö btw mieti jos vaimo tulee valittaa tärähtää maan SAATANASTI LEIPÄLÄPEEN...) whisperin while hollerin

Another mediocre album taking the spot of far better album that could be on the list.

I really like the first two tracks, but the rest is a bit hit-or-miss. Mike Watt played bass in this act, and likewise, I was never sold on Minutemen's patchy aesthetics. On paper, I should enjoy them (I usually love unpredictable "post-punk" records). But something in their music rubs me the wrong way, I don't know what it is. And even though fIREHOSE offers something different, the same thing happens here for me, sadly. 2/5 for the purposes of this list, translated to a 7/10 grade for more general purposes (5 + 2) Number of albums left to review: 452 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 256 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 131 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 164 (including this one)

Just seems like a slightly generic indie thing to me

Enjoyed some. But just not enough good to push higher.

With the instant access to a huge range of artists and albums, I've no idea why anyone would ever choose to put on this 32 minutes of fairly tuneless half baked ideas. Rating: 1.5/5 Playlist track: Time With You Date listened: 22/08/23

Slightly quirky agit punk pop with sparse production. Few hooks. May need more than one listen but it won't get it. Left me a bit cold.

Maybe not a proper listen but I wasn't enamoured with what I heard.

This album seems to have the ability to sound pretty decent without ever making me want to listen to more of it. This album has a calmer 90s alt style with some jam intersections but overall it just doesn’t work for me. Maybe it’s that there are significantly better similar sounding bands than them. Not bad but not great. 5.3/10

Riddle of the Eighties is "what is this album doing on anybody's list 40 years later".

Not bad as such, but just incredibly unremarkable. Not sure how it made the list.

There’s a decent four song run on ‘Fromhohio’ taking in ‘Time With You’, ‘If’n’, ‘Some Things’ and ‘Understanding’. I'm underwhelmed by the rest of the album.

Sekava kokonaisuus minusta, ei oikein löydä linjaa. A-puolen alku oli ok, puhelauluihin meinasi mennä usko, Time with you pelasti olemalla oikea biisi. Kiva että rumpali on hyvä.

This felt like a Punk record in a way with the shorter song structure and the overall feel, but the music was a weird pop punk/Paul Simon mix for me at times. It was fine I guess, but I didn't care for it.

Interesting but not as good as Minutemen
