Reviews (page 4 of 8)

Crusty, chaotic, but never boring.

It's a bit of a mixed bag this one. A lot of the record is really murky and a bit weird, but there's also a bunch of really good tracks in there too. I much prefer the more upbeat tracks. There's some genuinely funky tracks in here with some good riffs, nice keys and so on. The skill and musicality is there, but I wish it were more consistent. I enjoyed this the more it went on, so I think this one might be more of a grower over time. I went from a 2.5 rounded down to a 2.5 rounded up, to a 3.5 rounded down.

This rocks pretty hard. Not sure why I'd never heard of this guy before.

General thoughts: lol this is not blues. this is kinda like a noisy alt rock /grunge, 2 noisy 2 me. sometimes is crazy fun rock like chiken dog, other times is just craizy noise or bad experimental Favorite songs: Identify (reminded me of bastro, thats a huge compliment), Chicken Dog Worst songs: Sticky Cover: Simple but enough Real rating: 2.69

Pretty good fun - these guys were fantastic live back in the day

It’s fun! I accidentally listened to the bonus tracks, which do wear out their welcome. Being white and having “blues” in the band name (especially for purity testers on this website who are also white) gives this some weird cultural baggage. Interesting that this came out during the 90s punk revival. And predated the 2000s distorted-vocal garage rock revival.

It was fun and had good potential, but for some reason that I don't understand, they decided to record it in a bathroom with the whole band playing live and all the windows open. It made it a bit harder to have a good experience, so 2.5 is enough.

It's a good JSBX album. You only need one, they don't do much on the variation front. For what it's worth, I'd have gone for the one with Bellbottoms on instead!

Noise and screaming. Very stupid. Noice I don't like blues or punk much, but here they kind of negate each other. The combination makes it actually enjoyable

A little unpolished, though the spontaneity has some upside. Several enjoyable tracks, some just feel unfinished 3.4

When this first coughed outta my speakers, I was thrilled - dirty, junkyard blues rock with traces of the Stones, the Cramps and even the Velvet Underground. Unfortunately that feeling didn't last. Despite my initial delight in the grimy, clanky guitar tones, by the end I found it all a little exhausting. Rufus Thomas was criminally underused - 'Chicken Dog' was fun, but stick him on another track or two!

This is an atmospheric record first and foremost. If you like catchy singles you're out, in fact if you like songs, you're out. If you like talent, you're out. But if low-fi noise is your bag, dig in

This one started off absolutely terrible and I was convinced I'd give it a 1, but I was caught off guard when I heard some pretty solid songs thereafter. Average it all out and it gets a 3.

Too long for its own good, and arguably under produced. But, I would say that also adds to its odd appeal. It’s just wild fun recorded on track, I think the guitar work is fantastic, the instruments in general are good, it just gets a little lost.

This was weird - like purposefully weird, which is the worst kind cause it feels a bit forced and it really loses points on the lyrics. However the sound did get me interested, it's very 90s but it has it's own twist to it and I do enjoy that. Also it would really benefit from trimming some songs, 1h20m is definitely too long for an album like this.

the album is awful in a fun kind of way 😂 Favorite track: wail other picks: skunk, fuck the shit up, can’t stop

Not my cup of tea

Some really good stuff. Nearly a 4.

My Canadian uni mates loved this gear.

This wasn't my mood today, but I can see the attraction for some.

I loved Wail when it first came out so am familiar with this. It's cool and scuzzy and bluesy and fun. At points it becomes a bit too much but I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. It was interesting getting this close to a Kings if Leon album as I wanted to score his higher, but I realised that was just because if nostalgia and because they were cooler and less mainstream but KOL has catchier songs. Another 3.5 rounded down

Like a bar band that decided to play a few basement shows at the punk house where their friends are squatting. It’s not groundbreaking when they’re tight, and sometimes they’re a bit too drunk to be tight and instead play stupid ass joke songs, but at least their set is always fun. They have this cowpunk piss-take of country blues, especially the style popularized by Elvis, and it’s just fun if you let loose a bit. At the same time, though, based on the talent, range of styles, and even the features on here, I suspect these guys are a lot more respectful of the blues tradition than people who hate on this record. I don’t know if I’d call this essential — I’m not even sure I would’ve told these boys to get into a studio, if I’m being honest — but truthfully, I enjoyed this a lot more than other ✨serious✨ albums on this list. It’s definitely way too long and way too disheveled and unfocused to get too much praise from me, knowing I won’t remember it much in the morning, but I do like it! If I stumbled upon Now I Got Worry in a bin, I’d pay no more a Hamilton for it. More importantly, I’d 100% see these guys play a punk house basement, and that might be higher praise than any attempt at real criticism here.

...Interesting

Never heard of this artist. Very interesting style of music. Didn't know punk blues was a thing. Very cool stuff so far. Very interesting. Not able to get through the whole album.

Solid 3.5 stars. A straightforward noisy rock album. At times the lyrics are simple, other times they're inaudible but it always sounds pretty good. Lots of short tracks keep the album engaging. It also includes moments of heavy distortion or experimental sounds. Notable tracks include "Wail," "Love All of Me," "Can't Stop" and "Sticky."

Not hearing much blues from Spence but certainly a musical explosion. Some Beck influence, some good beats and mixing, some noise, some weirdness, and some fucking shit up. Can't say I liked it all that much but I kinda want to hear it again. Def need to watch the music video for Wail directed by Weird Al?!...2.55

Never heared of JSBE before, but I got quite surprised by this album. Always wild, sometimes hard to digest, sometimes on the edge to annoying. But if you forget about the starting scream and the last track it´s most of the time fun to listen to. A weird mixture of Stones, Hives, AC/DC and Lenny Kravitz. Not an every day pick.

Scuzzy, fuzzy, blues rock

6/10. While it was a unique listening experience I found a lot of it to be a bit annoying. That said — I thought the talent was clear. The Elvis-like voice with this style of music was very interesting. Added Dynamite Lover to the playlist because I thought it encompassed a lot of the positives of the album and less of the negatives (imo).

Some of this was a bit weird and wasn’t enjoying it but there were actually some great songs in amongst this and at certain points I got their vibe. Kind of reminded me a little bit of the misfits but I dunno if that’s just me. Looking back now later at the songs and don’t remember the names of any I liked apart from can’t stop but I’m sure there were a few. 3 out of 5 is fair

Only song I’d ever heard by these was Bellbottoms, which I listened to a hundred times without thinking to check the rest of their songs out. Alas, it aint on this record. I did like this though. Scuzzy, over distorted garage rock. It is too long mind, gets a bit much after a while. But it’s clear these are loving what they do almost as much as they love getting their ends away. Fair enough really. I read an interview a while back where they said these pretty much divided indie rock at the time. Half thought they were a great, refreshing addition to the more serious scene, the other half thought it was a pisstake. The singer was described as being an Elvis impersonator having a breakdown, or words to that effect. I like it though, sounds like a group of musicians having a great time, with plenty of Little Richard-esque influence. Cant give it a 4 as I’m not sure I’ll be rushing back, but would definitely catch them live if they ever toured again

Because it was so long I had to give it a good few goes to get all the way through, and because it sounds very samey it took me ages to work out where Id last got to each time. Think I probably listened to a lot of tracks twice. This is a great example of why most garage rock albums are less than 40 mins runtime, there is a really good 40 min album here that is bloated with weaker tracks and repetition. Eyeballin was probably the best, was a bit trippy, reminded me of QOTSA. I think this band are alright and would probably be good live, but this album is hard work. 2.5.

It is decent but it isn't half long. The first track, opening with the yelling, sort of misleads you for the rest of the album - nothing quite hit that level of madness. Nevertheless, an enjoyable listen.

This album was just okay. It really feels like they’re trying too hard.

It's like White Stripes but with more complexities.

Loose and loud, not really a classic album but a lot of fun.

It's like Jack White meets Elvis?

Why the screaming…

It was ight, was expecting straight blues rock, but it got a little punky n psychobillyish, so that's cool. Just generally wasn't my thing

3.8 - I like seeing Matador records represented — an important influence on my 90’s indie music diet. Jon Spencer was another act in my periphery. He always struck me as more of a showman, the kind of performer who’d jam out on stage dawning an Evil Kneivel-type jumpsuit. He and Jack White have this schtick, this sort of traveling bluesman persona — there’s lots of swagger, and smooth talkin’ jive. But behind the facade, Jon Spencer is an artist with an array of sludgy, gnarly guitar sounds that twist and bend and groan to create dark and colorful tunes. “Fuck Shit Up” is my favorite.

Not my favourite of their albums, but very good

C+ Skunk 3 Identify 3 Wail 3 Fuck Shit Up 3 2 Kindsa Love 2 Love All Of Me 3 Chicken Dog 2 Rocketship 3 Dynamite Lover 3 Hot Shot 3 Can't Stop 3 Firefly Child 3 Eyeballin 3 R.L. Got Soul 3 Get Over Here 3 Sticky 3 This was actually pretty good.

I love Jon Spencer, Seen him live 2x - This album is not his best, it is maybe his most interesting and closest to the tightly managed chaos of his live shows in its approach. I like it enough to give it 4 stars but I really think I would put it a notch below Extra Width, Orange and Meat and Bone all of which I really love. I hope one of those if not all are on this list too so I give it 3.

Id never heard of these guys before, definitely not this album. It was kind of fun but I wasn't a huge fan of the guys voice.

It’s not bad. It’s pretty good. They at least try and take blues elsewhere rather than blooz a la every second rate Stevie Ray hack. But is this the one? I think they did better.

Crazy band. I saw them perform live a few times in the late 90’s on ABC TV shows (Recovery &, most memorably an anarchic performance on Studio 22 - it’s on youtube). I can’t describe them any better than Mark Deming of AllMusic, who proclaimed about this album : “If you want to get slapped upside the head while you boogie all night long, this is the album for you." Because sometimes it feels like an aural assault. Great to hear the Funky Chicken-man himself guest on Chicken Dog. He was about to turn 80 when this album was released. Worth a listen.

Surely bit of a mixed bag, some songs were pretty good and some pretty bad, maybe it will grow on me

There were moments when I hated this (screaming at me first thing in the morning) and moments that I really enjoyed it (in the afternoon). I'm not sure what to think about it as a whole. I'm not sure I ever really got what it was supposed to be for me.

Nice punky almost bluesy short songs

Solid album

I did not like this album to start but it either got better or grew on me. Very chaotic blues at times but the second half settled a bit. I only had time for one listen and would try it again to see how it is on a second listen.

It's not bad. I bet it's a fun live show, though.

Fairly easy listening. Nothing ground-breaking. A good example of blues rock, but I think are better examples.

Interesting

Was not expecting noise or noise rock type. I guess the title says explosion. I should like it but …

Kannte ich nicht, hat mich gut abgeholt. Jetzt weiß ich, was Jack White früher so gehört hat

Crazy sound

It’s an incredibly bold and incredibly stupid choice to put two of your 4 worst songs (Skunk & Fuck Shit Up) at the very front of the album, but somehow, what emerges from it is a shockingly nice 36 minute jam session full of really good, diverse energy. There are still points where the production is a fucking cacophonic mess, but those moments show up less and less after Fuck Shit Up, and by Track 7, the album actually becomes a fun listen up until the final 2 tracks, where it goes back into the bad habits of Skunk & Fuck Shit Up. Really experimental, avant-garde, greasy grungy garage rock that somehow hits on some of my sensibilities from about Tracks 5 through 14, and that’s most of the album, which is a miracle after that abysmal opening. To put it bluntly, this is the album Apocalypse Dudes fucking wishes it could have been, and it pulls off a bigger comeback than the Patriots did in Super Bowl 51. It is a 3 as a whole, but the good songs on this album, I would genuinely rate a 4.

I'm reminded of a lot of different punk bands: The Gun Club, The Cramps, The Misfits, to name a few. Weird they are the "Blues Explosion". Only a few tracks sound bluesy. Decent enough but not a revelation by any stretch.

2.5 - 3.0

This album is way more punk than I remember. It's closer to Mudhoney and Gas Huffer than I gave it credit for.

A mixed bag - some I liked, some too much noise, and often I didn't like the lyrical content at all

the start of it was bad, then it got pretty good half way through, different to anything i’ve heard though

Worth a relished, just a little weird

Starting the album with a blood curling is certainly a choice -- and lets you kinda know what you're getting into with this one. Certainly seems to have scared off a good portion of the reviewers here. But I will persist through. Can hear a bit of like Beck in here with some of these blues grooves ("F**k Sh*t Up specifically). Released on Matador, which is making me want to give it a bit more credit, as I love the label. I think I'm actually enjoying this. Interesting reading reviews about how people were concerned about the cultural appropriation aspects of mimicking Black vocal stylings -- definitely something that would come under even more fire today, and for good reason. But if you can look past that, there's some really explosive rock 'n' roll music going on here. I think it wore on a bit as a 45 minute record (don't really feel any inclination to listen to the bonus edition that's 1 hr 20), could have been a really great 30 minutes. I think this a strong 3 for a record that I appreciate and enjoyed in places, but don't see myself coming back to super often.

Fun background noise

oke ja ähnlich wie bi en-tact: coole ahfang, denn chli d ernüechterig und denn je länger s album gaht, desto nerviger. het aber doch einige sehr weirdi/spezielli moment wo ich cool find

I liked some of this.

A good bar blues band

There was an explosion…but it was more punk than blues. I enjoyed it, but it won’t make my regular rotation.

I like Blues/Rock and I definitely found a few new songs to like. Overall, though, it's not my favorite compilation and seemed to descend a lot into discordant sounds that hit my ear wrong.

This was a new genre to me, blues punk. Liked most of it with a few exceptions. Will I listen to again: 40%

Well that is one way to start off an album, very grating introduction lol. Overall I enjoyed this album, lots of blues influence obviously, but then some punk and avante-garde type stuff as well. Great music to have in the background. I would give it a 7/10, but round down to 3/5. Some of the weirder songs detract from the overall great vibes. Favorite Songs: Wail, 2Kindsa Love, Eyeballin, Least Favorites: Skunk, Sticky

This was a mess. I rather liked it. Fuck Shit Up is the obvious stand out. It sounds like it should. I don't remember this being played on the radio. Mr Spencer is a very excitable fella. Thirty two tracks was pushing it a bit. May - or may not - have made it to the end.

Explodey. 3 stars.

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Now I got Worry Wow. Not at all what I was expecting. This was like listening to a RL Burnside and the Bad Brains collaboration. We got some hard core punk infused with the blues. This album is not for everyone, but I found some things that I did enjoy. I don't care for the screaming parts but as with a lot of albums, I really love the music parts and sometimes just wish we were getting an instrumental album. 3/5

It's the kind of music that sort-of exists

Starts with probably the most abrasive opener on any album I've ever heard. Pretty spotty, but I did enjoy a few of the lo-fi weirdo tracks on here. 3/5

Interesting.

Really cool. I would say that instrumentally, this album is great. Vocally, though, there is this undercurrent I’d really sophomoric humor that wears out its welcome a but. I can look past that though, in favor of some really loud, cool psychedelic blues.

I kind of hate this but I kind of love it too. There’s some magic here, but a lot to sift through as well

I’m not a fan of experimental music but somehow I didn’t hate this despite the screaming intro. Decent background music and lots of potential to be hits but no memorable melody. I would sample this album for sure.

This was a unique album. Definitely lots of variety. From pretty good to pretty bad. Wail was alright, the voice reminded me of Elvis. Actually many of the songs early on in the album were pretty good. I think the albums biggest fault is it’s too long. And too many bad songs. They could cut the album in half and the album would be better off for it. I also can see how this would be a much better experience live. I could see people going crazy for it at the Crossroads. An interesting mix of emotions and feelings from this album.

Some parts I didn’t really like but some parts I loved

Not what i expected but i really enjoyed it!

some good songs. some pretty bad. par boute expérimental et d'autres moments straight blues / rock. not my style. felt over the place 5.5/10

1996, Genre: Punk blues, Alternative rock Punk blues? Ok.... never heard of this artist before. Standouts: 2Kindsa Love Others: Love All of Me, Wail, Fuck Shit Up, Rocketship After listening, I think it is more Punk than blues... There are a few tracks that are worthy of adding to playlists. Overall, a pleasant surprise. 3.5

Reminds me of the Eagles of Death Metal

Not bad. Not sure I’ll listen again though

Need to listen again

Really grew on me as I listened. Liked the scuzzy sound.

Now that is a shitty album cover. This isn’t at all what I was expecting. I was definitely expecting more—harmonica? Maybe a Black Crows feel? This is much more interesting and out there, though it definitely falls into a genre I typically don’t stay in for long, kind of Melvins-adjacent. Bet their live shows were fun though.

I love their Elvis meets Rage Against the Machine sound, but it’s wasted on a bunch of jam sessions. There are no true songs on the album.

Thought I would hate this after the first few seconds but it was actually pretty interesting, there was a lot of fun chaos mixed in with the slightly unlistenable chaos

Nooit eerder zoiets gehoord, was wel gaaf

Pretty solid blues album! Enjoyable but the deluxe edition is very very long.

I liked the songs where he didn't yell at me. Mr Spencer I'll take more of that smooth slow blues, a little explosion.

Raw, Loud and distorted. Loved it.

Wasn't sure what I was getting into, and I'm still not sure what I just experienced.

"Now I Got Worry" is the fifth studio album by American rock band the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Punk blues and alternative rock are the appropriate genres. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is a trio composed of Judah Bauer (guitar, vocals), Russell Simins (drums) and Jon Spencer (vocals, guitar). A long, loud scream starts "Skunk" and the album is off. Tinny drums. A funky guitar. This is very much lo-fi and reminds me of Mudhoney. They add more bluesy guitar in "Wail." This is slower. I'd put this in the rockabilly category. Yes, of course, the false Elvis voice is present. The band starts to really take off in "2Kindsa Love." Loud driving guitar. Now, dual guitars. The vocals are buried underneath the guitar. This is raw. "Chicken Dog" is a punk rockabilly jam. An unhinged bluesy guitar. Hypnotic funky rhythm. I think Rufus Thomas on lead vocals. This song rocks and is the best on the album. They continue the blues on the next song and third and final single released "Rocketship." Slower and has a garage rock vibe. "R.L. Got Soul" is just a funky, bluesy instrumental jam. Great groove. Along "Chicken Dog," it's the best song on the album. This is a decent album. There's a bit of filler here with 16 songs. They could have cut a lot out and made a heck of an album. The songs are short and have a raw energy. At times, they remind me of a lot bands: Reverend Horton Heat, Mudhoney, White Stripes and the Black Keys. The songs mentioned are a worth a listen.

Punk. Blues. Rock. Curioso.

Weird screaming. I like to look at the curated spotify playlists that have the artists musics - this one was stoner rock so seems fitting for me? Actually into it once I got past the screams but probs not something I’d come back to

I had not heard of this band or heard any of their music before. Even though it's mostly not to my own personal taste, they are very skilled musicians and performers. I do admire the way they play super-tightly even when things get chaotic and frenetic. In the right frame of mind, I have a feeling I'd really enjoy seeing and hearing them play live.

Very interesting album, it reminded me slightly of "Trout Mask Replica" by Captain Beefheart, but in this case the foundation of songs was really enjoyable - the blues was an actual blues genre. Vocal was also pretty good, going very experimental at times. Unfortunately, after few songs it became very repetitive and boring. Good idea, quite fun at times, but ultimately disappointing.

Punky alt/grungy blues from the 90s Raw, distorted, abrasive vocals and guitars; reminded me a little of the Stooges at times It’s pretty solid and has great energy, but ultimately a bit forgettable

It’s ok

first few songs not great but picks up

I was really curious after reading the controversial reviews and was really into the first half. For an album that is pretty average in length, it got tedious pretty fast and I was really ready for it to be done. Not bad, but also not one of the greats for me.

Blues-punk? Really interesting sound from these guys. Singer reminds me of Mick Jagger in some songs.

Much like starting your day by eating a handful of dirt, every album should start with ear splitting screaming to ensure it only gets better. At times it sounded modern Stones-y but really had an interesting 90s grunge character. Could take or leave the lyrics

Bluesy and explosivey

The artist's name really says it all. While perhaps somewhat controversial, I like Spencer's Elvis schtick.

not what i expected

A bad album that I kind of liked

Raw energy but a bit samey

Very spastic. I didn't get it at first and I didn't get the point of the screaming vocals on the opener Skunk (or the closer ). But as the album went on and as I gave it a couple listens I started to get a feel for it. There's a lot of funky rock going on that plays with a bunch of different sounds. But there's a solid rock undertone to it, even with all the distortions, odd changes of pace, etc. This album is unique that's for sure. Not sure I'm going to explore the band more but I did enjoy songs like Identity, Wail, 2Kindsa Love, Hot Shit, R.L. Got Soul, and Get Over Here.

Some bangers but certainly not my jam

Interesting - not sure I’d listen again.

Jack White has based his entire career on this album 👍🏾

A very distinctive sound, the guitar bends, the wildness and energy that stays intense even through the bonus tracks. Would listen again, especially now knowing that the original run time was 45 minutes, not the 80 minute extended version I almost didn't make it through.

Okay, I came in dreading this, but I actually liked it. A bit of an oddball, ramshackle mess of an album, but in a really good way. Noisy, garage-y, bluesy and fun. But the band is best when they lean into that twisted psychobilly vibe, which shows a strong influence of the Cramps. I liked the crisp pace; no dilly dallying here at all. Fave Songs: 2Kindsa Love, Eyeballin, Can't Stop, Dynamite Lover, Love All of Me, Wail, Rocketship

I wanted to like this one more than I did. Truly. I, like many, know them for their song "Bellbottoms" and think it a right banger. While I would not say that the music of "Now I Got Worry" is inconsistent compared to that song, it doesn't have a single track that reaches those phenomenal highs in my eyes. I may be a little generous with my rating here, but the album didn't overstay its welcome long enough for the negativity to sink through. There's some good. There's some bad. It ends before I could truly lament having listened to the latter.

Uneven. Chaotic. Messy. Very hit and miss. Not sure what to make of it. It's probably a 2.5 since some songs are quite good but a couple of songs are flat out terrible. If I was on the 1001 albums podcast I'd go neutral.

Explosion is a good word to describe this. Not quite sure what to make of it - it's sort of like Tom Waits meets Led Zeppelin, or some weird mash-up like that. I can get into the music, but not really digging the singing. It reminds me of the Doors after Jim Morrison died. They did a couple more albums with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger doing the vocals, and they sort of comically growled their way through it. Overall this is interesting, but not sure it's my thing. 2.5 stars, rounding up to 3.

I saw them at a festival around that time. Not very impressive. I never checked out their records. I like it better than I thought I would. Not all of it, but it has a lot of good parts, besides the weird parts. I also understand this doesn't work very well live. Favorite song: identity

This was like Jack White, Tom Waits, and Wesley Willis all in one album. After the first 30 second, I was sure I would hate it, but it grew on me.

My roommate in Culver City used to play this all the time. I know, I know.... "This album is just noise..." but put against the other album he used to play Clikatat Ikatowi, Now I Got Worry was far better preferred. Also, JSBE turned me on to Boss Hogg, which captured my interest for a little bit. All reality aside, I can appreciate this album for what it is and in the time that it existed, but after 30 mins. of listening again, that was enough to score this appropriately.

I know it’s a lot of noise, but somehow, and I can’t put my finger on why, it’s not JUST noise and I dig it.

i like the vocal twang in punk this mixes nicely. giving Elvis gone wild. this controlled chaos is the kind that smooths my brain wrinkles in a pleasant way and makes it so I can work. Fuck Shit Up is fun but the dissonance not really helping with brain smoothing, reminds me of the SpongeBob scene where Squidward is in the fuuuuutuuuree

I added a few songs to playlists, but only for certain moods.

Men, ändå, punkigt, ibland åt elektroniska hållet ('Fuck Shit Up'), ibland åt det blues-rockiga hållet ('Hot Shit'). Got Soul'.

Orange is way better

There were some great songs on this albums and some weird ones as well. Sometimes so weird that I had the feeling they were trying too hard to be weird. Anyway, the good songs are interesting, and it's a genre that I haven't really heard before...noise rock, with blues?

njaeejaeaa neej jo eller? det var konstigt.

It was blues with some snarl, I liked a good amount of this one. It was noisy, would probably come across better live. Chicken Dog was fucking weird though. 3 stars

The first few tracks were hard to listen to. Then I got used to it.

Alright

Genres: Punk blues, garage rock, blues rock, alternative rock Formed: New York in 1991 Run time: 32 songs, 1 hour 19 min Vocally, Jon Spencer reminds me of Mick Jagger with a hint of Elvis Presley. Musically the Blues Explosion is mix of punk, rock and very much alternative rock. It’s eclectic and unique. My Rating: ***

A wild ride. A bit surprised to read he is still alive.

This album somehow managed to redeem itself after losing whatever open mindedness I had after the screaming in the first 5 seconds with really rockin guitars and almost nothing else. Definitely seems like a great live show in some blues bar and it does get a little exhausting after a while but overall I ended up enjoying it I think. Wail was my fav and it’s a bonus that weird al was involved in some way.

didn't have the baby driver song

Grungy and rough, this album was fun and free, with very little regard of how an album is 'supposed' to sound. It was like early White Stripes with samples and spoken word slid in between the verses. Jon Spencer himself has a penchant to song writing, but is not much of a vocalist, though he does have a unique style. This was a fun album all around and the kind of rock and roll that I truly enjoy listening to. Favorite Track: 2Kindsa Love

A bit like the Ramones, but then more bluesy, so same rating ;)

In a bar in Tokyo once I heard a coterie of salarymen do the breakdown bit from 'Bellbottoms' replete with "UH!"s. This album does not contain that track, but the sentiment transposes.

The bastard child of The Cramps, Stooges and a thousand other scuzz rock garage bands. Is it fake is it real? Does it matter. The only way actually this could be any more enjoyable is if Jon Spencer was actually an Old Etonian called Quentin.

A fun album with a lot of interesting sounds going on. Not a new favourite by any means, but a genuinely enjoyable listen that I can see myself going back to. Best tracks: Fuck Shit Up, Chicken Dog, Rocketship, and Hot Shit.

I really struggle to connect with this. Maybe if I gave it more time the songs would grow on me, but nothing about it made me want to re-listen! Low 3.

Lots of weird shit coming together here. The Elvis voice is hilarious and kinda cool. Obnoxious and dumb at times, and too long, but I respect the insanity of it.

Weird and abrasive but I kinda like it

Disliked it at first but it grew on me. It's unstructured and messy but still there's something there that I like. With that said it's not a great album but not terrible either.

I wasn't feeling this. The album felt like it was all over the place with no cohesiveness. The lead signer's voice did remind of of Lux Interior, which I found interesting. Aside from that, this is just so so.

Poor man's East 17

blues influences can be heard, punk still not my genre though

Noisy and chaotic

What a bizarre album. I really liked some of the songs, but some were a complete flop for me. Lots of screaming and very disjointed instruments all over. Quite a long one too with 32 songs. Saved tracks: Wail, Fuck Shit Up, Hot Shit, R.L. Got Soul, Sticky

I have no reason in the world to like this as much as I did. Never heard of them, no one here seems to like them much, it's not even influential, and even critics weren't too crazy about it. But I had a blast rocking out to this weird punk blues piece. Embodies a lot of Iggy Pop spirit and imitating Elvis feeling like a rock n roll parody. A bit like The Fall except less controlled and focused. Raw and wild with wacky and creative instrumentation. Only reason I'm not rating it higher is cause the White Stripes showed the world you could make this style leagues better. Favorites: Skunk, Wail, Fuck Shit Up, 2Kindsa Love, Chicken Dog, Rocketship, Can't Stop

Less blues, more explosion

Interesting blend of punk and bluesy rock and roll. Not sure if I'll be revisiting this one any time soon tbh, but it was interesting.

Solid wanna be blues album.

Some pretty weird stuff in there but overall solid blues.

I would have been surprised had I gone to this show without knowing who they were beforehand. Very much not blues.

This was a challenging listen. The first 20 seconds certainly throws you off. Wail is a great track and I definitely got into the slightly off, crass, raw, punk energy of the album. Certainly nothing i expected, but definitely giving it props.

Funcionou bem a mistura do punk com blues.

I'm getting Math Rock meets Pixies vibes from this. Kinda too all over the place for my liking, didn't really feel cohesive. There were parts of it I really enjoyed but for the most part I was underwhelmed. Standouts: Wail

5/10. Was hoping for a bit more Blues, a bit less Explosion.

Great guitar, had a few tracks that fell short for me. Enjoyed the unique tone throughout

Yea pretty good, and a bit out there, which I like

This explosion could have been contained a bit

Definitely a explosion of genres, seems to me like country, rock, sometimes blues and a little punk mixed. All in all a fun experience. 3.5/5

Weird and very weird at times but was kind of interesting.

Bit of a mixed bag but it had some good bits

Punk blues, 1996. Good energy, but pretty basic music. Nothing more than a decent record after all.

It started off fairly strong, as noise albums go. I like the guitar, and while it's mostly noise from the singer, I kinda liked it at first. But then it just kept going. And going. And going. Cut the runtime in half and you have something here, otherwise it just seems a little self-indulgent. There's no way that there isn't something that could've been lost in a 80 minute album.

Became familiar with these guys reading the book Meet Me in The Bathroom. You can feel some of the roots that influenced some of the early 2000s rock revival. This just isn't as good as a lot of those albums...

Die gekte (soms too much), die swagger, die Elvis-on-speed sound: I can dig it!

Punk Elvis plays jagged guitars and slashed amps; wearing skin tight jeans and mutton chops while a bear with an Afro plays skins. Best Tracks: Wail; 2Kindsa Love; Get Over Here

Only really knew this guy from Bellbottoms. This was pretty fun

Messy, impenetrable lyrics, odd choices of cover versions, and yet, there's something there. Not the best, but one my younger self would probably have liked a lot.

Rating: 6/10

Much grittier than I was expecting. Liked the energy and the chaos of it, but stopped it before all the bonus tracks were done. At some point, I was done.

An explosion is great title for something that was spectacular at the beginning, and got smoky and draining towards the end.

There's a fine line between an album carrying in its energy from start to finish, and becoming a bit one-note. If it wasn't for songs like Can't Stop, with a different pace tot them this would be the latter for me. Psych-scuzzy nonsense, this should be right up my alley, but it didn't grip me, maybe it needed a couple of out and out bangers, maybe I'll like it better if I hear it on my normal set of headphones. Plenty of fun though.

Inudal an interesting never heard of this before. Liked the screaming and the funky blues sounds. One criticism too many songs felt like a lot of unfinished ideas towards the end. But overall enjoyed.

A rowdy racket of an album, with musical ideas by the bucketful. Unfortunately, like some other albums on here, this means that it can feel an unfocussed slog, I'd have rather had 2 albums 40 mins long than one at 80, but a great listen for the music all the same.

I've seen them in concert and enjoyed it, sadly this studio version didn't hit so well. A fella hollering full volume in a little packed club is a little different than getting it on your headphones at work where it's basically the equivalent of someone screaming right in your ear. Could be the not great (though far from terrible) streaming plus middle of the road headphones, but the mix on this was gratingly heavy on the high end for me. Nails on blackboards. Even for all that it's pretty unique.

Loud obnoxious punk blues.

Raw. Young. Fun. Jack White must have given this thing more than a spin or two in his early days

3.5 - not sure how I felt about this one on first listen tbh

Kinda funky (not like, funk music, just odd) but fine.

punk proto indie thrash

Not my cup of tea. Very abrasive.

I first came across this album in college and remember thinking that I'm not cool enough to listen to it. This time around, I didn't feel like it was cool enough for me. Times do change, I suppose! I had to check out the Weird Al video for Wail......

Well, this album starts with a bang! If it starts with a primal scream, where will it go? This is an album worth a second listen.

Good stuff

Tonally creative, gritty, with some nice pump up tracks, but overall kind of homogenous, contained, and at times abrasive

I owned this album when it came out and felt like a bad ass for being in the know, but the album didn’t get me laid in 1996 so I’ll subtract a star.

Surprisingly good. Some real grimey but catchy tracks

A bit out there and experimental which is cool but not entirely my cuppa tea

Mjög áhugaverð plata. Punk Blues. Það er nýtt fyrir mér.

With 32 tracks I would have said he was gaming the Spotify system but this predates Spotify. Rollercoaster album with some good tunes and a couple of dire ones too. Overall pretty good though

Probably not a great album for a romantic night in! Not quite sure how I would categorise this but I like it. Real score 3.5

Not sure how I felt about this album. Definitely some good blues riffs, but a lot of clattering and noise. I think I would have rated higher but it was a little too disorganized.

It was interesting. Couldn’t get the Shirehorse’s “Frank Spencer Blue’s Explosion” out of my head 😆

In yer face. Sure theres a time and a place....but not sure when and where ?

I enjoyed this so much more than Elvis lol Not many memorable songs, but still a fun listen.

Punk jazz with a dash of experimental fuck yous and death rattles

Ferocious punky blues. Worked for for some songs, didn't work for others

More enjoyable than i would have thought.... almost like if you mixed the Doors with the Black Keys.

I liked this album, pretty raw and unique.

A bit meh to be honest

Ok, wouldn’t listen again.

Great fun, loads of lovely dirty guitar. A very cool album but doesn’t draw you back for repeat listens

It was ok

I had never heard of these guys. Not bad!

Bit wacky

Whew! Swampy, repetitive, hard to listen to at times but relentless and uncompromising. “Dirty Shirt Rock n’ Roll” They reminded me a bit of Cramps, but then I listened to the Cramps and decided, no, they’re in a class of their own. You have to like the dogs barking at the end of Chicken Dog. It's amazing what you can like if jou forced to listen to.it.

Much more rockin' than I thought it'd be. Probably worth exploring more of his stuff at some point

I enjoyed this way more than I thought.

Lots of genres on this album, alternative? prog? I think I like it a little bit.

A blues band with heavy rock influences. The sound is good but many songs on the album blend together.

An interesting fusion of punk and blues. 3.5

Fun, but a bit disjointed and chaotic!

I respect the energy and some of the guitar licks but mostly this feels like having an amp turned up to 11 broken over your head by a screaming madman.

idk some of it’s really cool and some of it’s total garbage. wayyyy too inconsistent for me to rate it highly. i kinda appreciate the boldness though.

Some of this is legitimately good. Some of this is legitimately awful. On balance it should be at least a 3...but I find myself frustrated by the pretentiousness of it. Like "check this out, I can write some great blues rock with cool riffs...but I'm also going to throw some bullshit noise into it because I'M AN ARTIST." OK, guy. No one will ever accuse you of being a boring sellout, but no one will ever mistake you for being a successful artist, either. It's hard to be a successful artist, and at least this guy got to work with Weird Al, so maybe that's success enough. 2.4

Now I Didn't Enjoy

Fuck Shit Up sounds really cool; could do without the vocals. A lot of it has been.. a lot so far. 2Kindsa Love was cool Hot Shit also fun. Can't Stop has a fun groove to it. Still don't like the vocalist. Very good drum break! Firefly Child has a good groove too; I like the bluesy tracks and this drummer fucking rules. Eyeballin is interesting; again with the grooves. Why hasn't the band been this consistently good til now? RL Got Soul is more of the above. Sticky is just not fun to listen to I'm afraid\ I don't like Rocketship; something about the way he says wild child sounds dumb, and he says it a billion times. It's fine, but it doesn't do a lot for me. 2/5 Favorite: Fuck Shit Up Least: Rocketship Shoutout: Cant Stop, Firefly Child, Eyeballin

The music is intriguing, the vocals step all over it. There are a few redeeming qualities about this album, but overall it falls short.

Hardcore punk/post-punk, with noise, garage, and avant-garde features. A bit too abrasive for me. Singer has a kinda Elvis thing going on but it's buried in the noise. Actually we get a riff like A Little Less Conversation, immediately buried in noise too. This is quite tough to get through Best track - choose at random - Chicken Dog 2 stars - i'm sorry it's just too much noise, too far gone

Yeah, this album is just there. Some good snippets exists but it's surprisingly just boring as a whole. Top tracks: "Can't Stop," "R.L. Got Soul"

--Skunk…okay, not playing around. finally a guitar solo I can play! --Identify…noise --Wail…has the cadence of a pop song --Fuck Shit Up…oh my, quite the left turn. it’s interesting, can’t deny that --2Kindsa Love…decent punk. fun guitar riff --Love All of Me…more mid pop punk but it’s heavily distorted so it’s artistic, right? --Chicken Dog…the first track that feels complete and it includes a guest vocalist --Rocketship…some nice bass but overall whatever --Dynamite Lover…another track that feels complete as opposed to the other attempts at songs. nice, chunky sound --Hot Shot…sweet guitar groove --Can’t Stop…we get some much needed piano. a fun instrumental --Firefly Child…some cool, heavy riffs but otherwise meh --Eyeballin…interesting guitar experimentation but that's about it --R.L. Got Soul...nice opening riff. oh, it's the only riff. okay, there's some pretty great guitar work at the end --Get Over Here...there's a decent track buried in here somewhere --Sticky... -_____-

It was awful.

Found several parts pretty annoying with few redeeming qualities

That was a bit much.

Not that good

That was fine. Not the worst thing I’ve heard but I have no desire to listen to it again. Would rather listen to G Love.

I definitely wouldn't call this blues. It was more like angry punk. I'm giving it a 2 over a 1 as some of the guitar riffs on the second half of the album were kind of redeeming.

A lot of 90s had some interesting noisy music and experimental stuff. This one didn't work.

I mean… 1.8-ish. After a couple of first tracks it’s listenable.

First of all that fucking jim carrey dumb and dumber ass scream up front hurt my ears. Fuck you. I liked Wail, and I'm glad I waited through the first two track to hear it, but the rest of this album ranges from okay to booboo. Glad to hear Rufus on Chicken Dog, but that makes only 2 tracks on the cut that are worth it. Plus I can't help but notice what their next album is listed as on wiki and that's bugging the shit out of me. I'm holding a 2 here mostly for Rufus and that one song Weird Al did the music video for. Jon Spencer and his Blues Explosion don't have much part in that 2.

Well, that's a generous two, because it wasn't as insufferable as the Cramps, although they stem from the same branch. Mixing and overall sound: shit Songs: most of them are piss weak Singing: honestly laughable and ridiculous. Instruments: mostly fine, but there are clearly audible slips of playing when the guitarist fell out of time. Redeeming quality: there were one or two songs that had a cool groove going. Spare me this shit next time, please.

fucking scream jumpscare at the start of this fuck you. this is a very fitting counterpart to the last album i got (Raw Power by The Stooges). in many ways this is a premonition of the garage rock revival of the 2000s. more eclectic than a lot of that, which is nice even if i didn't like this all that much. has some killer riffs but it didn't give me much else. the Beck-esque hip hop elements are pretty rough. deserves to be one of the 1001? no.

You know, I was really uncertain going into this. Out of 32(!) songs, only one breaks past half a million Spotify streams. Clearly very few people think this is worth listening to. To its credit, though, there are some gems buried amongst the distortionslop. Skunk and Wail, the first and third songs respectively, are wacky, brash, and surprisingly groovy. Wail in particular pays homage to late-60s acid rock, accompanied by slightly better production than the 60s had to offer. Normally I like to justify why certain tracks are enjoyable, but I can't do that with 2Kindsa Love. Don't get me wrong, it's thoroughly enjoyable – I just can't pinpoint why. The distortion is kind of overpowering here. Like the guitar equivalent of that blinding spacey distortion Matt Bellamy does with his Muse vocals all the time. A couple songs later, Chicken Dog stands out as being perhaps the most commercially accessible recording. Can't Stop would claim the same title, except it's mainly an (extremely catchy) instrumental with some weird out-of-tune singing/moaning at times. Entirely unsurprising: after the first 30 minutes or so, the album's blistering energy really starts to wear off. And then after the first 60 minutes, you catch yourself constantly checking how many damn songs are left. Scratch that – it's from the song Sticky onward. I became sticky with determination to see this semi-experimental crap through to its conclusion. That's not to say the entire experience is a waste of time – there are plenty of great riffs and grooves throughout the album, including on some of the latter (quasi-)instrumental tracks. But dammit, there's a ton of filler too. The last seven consecutive tracks are all terrible and (in the case of the Radio Ad series) near unlistenable. 2/5 Key tracks: Wail, 2Kindsa Love, Chicken Dog, Can't Stop, Buscemi

when i saw the ''blues explosion'' i didn't assume i would hear this much punk. there are so many songs on the album so i couldn't listen to all of them. but the ones i listened to, were they extraordinary? no. were they fun? yes. i respect anyone who did rock/metal/punk in the 90's so i say today's discovery was well received even though i gave 2 stars.

I really want to like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion but too much of it is just sloppy versions of things other do better. A song like “Rocketship” feels like the best they can get - rootsy raw rock that has a melody and a beat. The rest feels like your friend in a local band that is good enough to go see and cheer on but glad when it’s over.

I was very worried how long this album was gonna take me man. It took me days to get through this. There are some gems on here but cheese and they’re few and far between. Won’t be coming back.

Knew this was going to be a weird one just from the cover. Some decent backing tracks in there but the lyrics and voice work were just so bad at times. What was that last song as well. Specific rating - 1.9 Fav song - R.L got soul Least fav - Sticky / fuck shit up

Had a lot of trouble finding this one, and honestly this kind of grating vocal style is just not for me. I enjoyed some of the instrumentals but by the end of it I had had enough. Now I Got Worry that there's going to be another Jon Spencer Blues Explosion album on this list.

Don't know. There was some nice singing segments but was a little too chaotic for most part

Now I Got Worry is a noisy, abrasive collision of punk, blues, garage rock, and chaos. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion push their raw, distorted sound to extremes, delivering an album that's energetic and uncompromising but often more interested in attitude and texture than conventional songwriting. It's a challenging listen that rewards fans of experimental rock but can feel exhausting for others.

I hear a White Stripes sound and less “blues explosion”. I get that it’s 1996 and the White stripes may not have been an influence. Ok? I get it. I know this guy had a hit at some point because I have heard of him before and I don’t just hear of guys who include their name in their band name. So ya, this just lacks any sort of wow moment for me. It’s really just a garage recording to me. Sort of a “throw everything at the producer and see what sticks” vibe

its kinda shite

The energy is good, but the songs aren't as interesting as they could be and the album is kind of flat. 2/5 Won't listen again

Kind of fun and crazy, but also kind of fatiguing for a whole album.

Best Song: Chicken Dog. The lyrics were annoying but the riff was alright. Worst Song: Skunk. I cannot forgive this song for its atrocious start. Overall: One of the worst starts to an album I've ever heard. Some of the bluesy punk was okay, but it started off on such a bad foot that the album just annoyed me. There's a reason this album has already been lost to the annals of history.

You know, this is actually a pretty interesting album for being kinda ass. It really does have quite a few tunes that sound like something straight out of a garage in the late 60’s/70’s. I’m also getting heavy steppenwolf vibes (can’t stop for example) Not sure how I feel about the more twangy tracks though. Now that I listen more, this album could be totally salvageable and more palatable if it were a lot shorter. This just isn’t the kind of shit you need 16 songs of. I’m gonna have to revisit this again, because there’s definitely stuff here I genuinely enjoy.

Dang i am indifferent about this honestly its just rock music and it’s not really boundary setting

Something irritating about the whole album all the songs were just poorly written and badly produced probably quite a talented guy but sound quality and balance was all off. I liked some of the 'bonus tracks' but overall really didn't like the album.

I'd probably enjoy it more if I was on whatever he's on. I was initially excited as I like Bellbottoms, shame.

Was really hoping to see that this came out in like the 70s or something so i could say that it’s ahead of its time. Kind of makes me think of a more poorly executed White Stripes sound?

Shit. From a butt. A few cool guitar licks, but this does nothing for me.

Ahhh man another generic blues album, here we go… Press play AAAHRHRHHFHFHHHHHGGGV Wait this is 32 songs long?

John Spencer? Hm. Kennelijk waren de pilletjes toen even uitgewerkt.

2 out of 5. Not much going on for me here.

Not one of my favorites, maybe was better in a real show but that i will never know

Not my kind of music. Too screamy and loud overall. Didn’t finish the album.

this was a good one to listen to whilst doing the dishes. already forgotten what it was like though. but not bad

while i probably enjoy this a little more than when i first (and last) heard it back in '96, it's still not an album that anyone MUST hear before they die

First half is really interesting. It reminded me of the White Stripes.

fuck shit up? more like fucked these ears off!!!

Music can be both abrasive AND good, so in that sense this album is batting .500.

Alter, die ersten Sekunden vom ersten Track.... Fickt euch!.

Nein, danke.
