Reviews (page 2 of 8)
I’ve heard of Supergrass but never listened to them. This album blew me away. I had so much fun listening to it. Is this the first time I’ve given a 5 on the first listen?
I am an American who loves Britpop and the most British of British rock (Kinks, Jam, Blur). I count albums by Suede, The Stone Roses, Elastica, and The La’s as my favorite of all time. And yet, somehow, someway, I had never heard this record before. I knew Supergrass of course - “Alright” and other cuts from their debut. But I had somehow missed this release. It’s Britpop - leaning into the psychedelic “Magic Mystery Tour” in particular. But it also draws on American power pop influences as well - like a British Cheap Trick. I can count on one hand the number of 5* albums I’ve heard on this journey that I hadn’t heard before. This is one of them.
Britpop 4 life!!!
It’s interesting how it’s 90s, but sounds older. Led Zeppelin vibes, but also like Foo fighters. Like Grateful Dead and Franz Ferdinand. It’s both old sounding and ahead of its time. How have I not come across this before? The driving bass lines are sick, but also not driving, also very smooth and funky. Such a great combination of so many things.
My goodness. I'm giving this album 5 stars for G-Song alone.
Oasis but more adventurous
Creo que alguna vez escuché este disco y no le había dado importancia. Es una absoluta maravilla de colección de canciones maduras y llenas de emociones más allá de la urgencia chispeante de su disco debut. Una de las mejores sorpresas que llevo en este camino.
"In It for the Money" is the second studio album by English alternative rock band Supergrass. Britpop and power pop are the Wiki-listed genres. That works but they also incorporate other styles as well. The band came into the studio with only two songs written so most of the album was written in studio. The bandmembers included Gaz Coombes (lead vocals, guitar, bass), Mike Quinn (bass, guitar, backing vocals) and Danny Goffey (drums, percussion, backing vocals). Gaz's brother Rob was also a heavy contributor (keyboards, piano, backing vocals). The album had critical acclaim and, commercially, it reached #2 in the UK and #23 on the US Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart. An ominous synth intro opens "In It for the Money." A dark guitar riff. Gaz with a high piercing voice. Vocals repeating the song title. Hey, eventually a pop song emerges. Still a harder edge to the song. The continue the harder edge in "Richard III." Faster. Driving. The band gives all their songs human names as they work on that song. Hence, Richard III. "Late in the Day" begins with an acoustic guitar. Very Beatle-esque. Piano, synth, nice backing vocals. He realizes the relationship is more than platonic but it's too late to change things. "Sun Hits the Sky" has a revving guitar riff and handclap rock beats. There's a pyschedelic edge to this song made more so with a synth, percussion and bass jam. They sort of go Stonesy and "Can't You Hear Me Knocking." OK. "Going Out" has a big sound with horns, organ and piano. Is it about their drummer Goffey who's been all over the tabloids? They get the funk out in "Cheapskate" with the beat, bass and organ. They admitted this song to be influenced by Kool & the Gang. It sounds like Talking Heads too. A very uplifting song. I have no idea if it's about drugs or just being happy. A good song too. The album and band started off with a much more harder edge and big sound than their debut. These are well-constructed songs; there's a guitar, bass and drum base but they add percussion, synth, organ, piano and horns. And they let those instruments jam too. The music is rock and power pop but they add elements of funk, pyschedelia, acoustic and even glam. Their debut is a really good album and so is this. Both albums are albums you should listen to.
Blind album, its no I Should Coco but its still good. This may be the band I could whole-heartedly enjoy discovered through this project. I wonder if theres more from them on here.
5/5 Great alt-rock. They wear their influences on their sleeve and, in turn, you can hear so many later bands through them. I really didn't expect much, but I was blown away.
my fav ‘grass lp
1997. Britpop, power pop
Britpop’s forgotten middle child, still living off the hype of a cool older sibling.
Really enjoyed this one! A super fun album that was catchy and upbeat 5 ⭐️
Supergrass is one of those groups that I only knew for one song, in this case, "Grace" off the Lego Rock Band soundtrack. Lead vocalist Gaz Coombes and drummer Danny Goffey started out in a band called the Jennifers until they befriended bassist Mick Quinn, changed their name to Theodore Supergrass, and then shortened the name to Supergrass. They signed to Parlophone, released their debut album, I Should Coco, and saw quite the boom amidst the Britpop craze. In It for the Money is the group's followup, and man I was genuinely impressed by this album. Right from the get-go with the organ swell into the guitar arpeggios and Gaz Coombes's voice all crescendoing into the rocking title track, there's a lost of bombast and intricate songwriting going on. I was engaged all the way through, as the group run the gambit from rauckus jams such as "Richard III", "Tonight" and "Sun Hits the Sky", to gorgeous acoustic ballads such as "Late in the Day" and "It's Not Me", to outright stompers such as "G-Song", "Going Out", "Cheapskate" and closer "Sometimes I Make You Sad". Never once did I feel that Gaz's high-pitched voice come off as nasally or unintelliglible. Never once did I not enjoy a sonic shift that the group went for in the sort of experimental rock that harkened back to the Beatles without being an overt callback. Never once did I feel that this band come off as pretentious or snide in their song construction and delivery. These lads had genuine talent and a sheer commitment to their craft, with plenty of hooks and riffs to blow the house down. I don't know what else to say here. I was floored by this album, as it made me realize Supergrass are an underrated group in the larger pantheon of Britpop.
Love the music. The combinations of the sounds are lovely.
The cover absolutely fooled me and I was very pleasantly surprised by the proggy, arty, sunny vibes of this album. Appropriate for the sun finally coming out again now it's March :D
This is a very good album the whole way through and almost too up my alley
Amazing album. Enjoyed every track. Never knew much about Supergrass apart from Alright but will be checking out more.
Such a fun album. A very entertaining and unique take on brit-pop, which I'm also not very keen on. Refreshing and surprising complexity on each song. One of the better uses of additional brass/orchestral music as well. Each song radiates a passion from the band that is very evident, and very satisfying
Fav: Sun Hits The Sky Least Fav: Sometimes I Make You Sad Hope they made a lot of money off of this album
Some superb, cheeky indie rock that seemingly came out of left field. I defy anyone to not enjoy “caught by the fuzz”
Really good, not for everyone i suspect but this was right up my alley 9/10
reminds me of my teenage years - indie excellence
This album is amazing!! I never listened to Supergrass but I knew Sun hits the sky, what an amazing peace of art. This band has everything that Oasis doesn't have.
Very good, these guys know how to make great songs ;-)
insane
Further testament as to why 1997 was such an incredible year for British albums. Loved this. Hadn’t listened to it in full before but knew the singles.
Catchy and melodic indie rock, fast paced kinda makes you want to be running down a busy crowded sidewalk. Some really great moments in this album, it was one of those pleasant surprises from this generator that make it worth putting up with 50 Dexys Midnights Runners albums scattered between 500 Elvis Costello Albums.
You can tell from the cover art that, although the self-mocking humour and wit is still there, they've moved on a bit. It's now underpinned by some darker shades, which I like . This is one of those albums where although I love pretty much everything here, some of the lesser known tracks have a depth that I only truly fully appreciate years later. Anyway, the unusual sound experiments are what make this album so damn good. Like the way an ominous diminished chord (played on a spooky Hammond organ) slowly builds up the opening title track before dawn explodes into vibrant daylight, that's inspired; or the haunting theremin solo on 'Richard III'; the spacey extended Moroccan jam on the tag of 'The Sun Hits The Sky'; the rolling piano and reflective instrumental passages of 'Hollow Little Reign'; or the crazy oompah percussion and freaking awesome acoustic guitar solo on the closing 'Sometimes I Make You Sad'. But ultimately the record retains the Supergrass trademark of economical catchy songwriting, soulful lead vocals, zany high harmonies, tight musicianship, dense guitars and well crafted arrangements. For me, this cracking album is their magnum opus.
Supergrass made a massive mistake in having a novelty hit with 'Alright.' That and the opportunism of the cover for 'Caught By the Fuzz' gave the impression they were a novelty band. They were not. They were up there with Britpop's finest. In places this album is a peer of what Blur were doing (Sometimes I make you sad) whilst Richard III rocks akin the Manics any day of the year. There is stil lquirky (Going Out and the title track) but, all in all, this is a fabulous record and a true pop gem which, in 1997, makes it pretty much unique.
Albumi #31, 28.08.2024 Klassikkoalbumi vuodelta 1996. Mielestäni Supergrassin paras levy ja muutenkin 90-luvun kohokohtia.
I know this one well, and love it.
This album cover looks like every busker on any corner in Asheville, NC. My 2nd Supergrass album on this list. It might be my favourite 90's Britpop album I've gotten so far. Makes me think I should relisten to the other one.
Somehow never heard any of this wonderful album before. Supergrass has a new fan. Every song was great except for the last one because I hated the ungh sound they were using for the bass line.
Really sold whole way through. I relistened to their debut and it’s better than I remember. This one wasn’t quite as good as debut but still a lot of fun Rating: 4.7
I find this much much better than their previous album I had. Strong songs throughout and great guitar work and catchy melodies and choruses
Supergrass's second album, In It for the Money, marks a significant step forward in the band's musical maturity since their debut. Released in 1997, the album showcases a depth and complexity that sets it apart from much of the indie rock of its time. The band moves beyond the youthful exuberance of their first album, displaying a wider range of musical styles and more sophisticated songwriting. Tracks like Richard III and Late in the Day demonstrate their skill and ambition, blending catchy hooks with intricate arrangements. The album's production is polished yet retains the raw energy that Supergrass is known for, giving each song a distinctive edge. Gaz Coombes’ vocals are more nuanced and expressive, adding an emotional depth to the lyrics. The band experiments with different genres, incorporating elements of psychedelic rock, funk, and Britpop, which keeps the album engaging from start to finish. Songs like Sun Hits the Sky reveal a confident band unafraid to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories. The album balances upbeat tracks with introspective moments, showcasing the band's versatility and growth. Overall, In It for the Money is a standout release that solidifies Supergrass's place in the alternative rock scene and highlights their evolution as artists. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 9 STAND OUT TRACK - It's Not Me
There were a lot of albums like this in the late 90s but this was among the best.
Absolutely loved this. Always been a fan of this band. Love Gaz Coombes vocals. Brilliant music. Can't go wrong. Brilliant 👍
I didn't realized there was another Supergrass album on this list! I loved I Should CoCo and have listened to it a couple times since getting it a few months ago. I think I Should Coco is the stronger album, but I loved this, too. I love power pop.
Really enjoy the sound they make
How in the world do I not already love this band? Blur and Supergrass rank as my favorite finds from this endeavor to date. This album has just about everything I want from a pop/rock album. Great tunes, quirky ideas, great vocals, lyrics that will take a little while to figure out, never lost my interest or slumped — not easy to award a 5-star rating on the first listen, but I'm smitten.
Man I loved this so much! Never heard of this band before and I’ll be spinning this a lot.
Incredible AltRock album. So much soul and heart in the vocals and instrumentals. It feels very influential for a lot of my favorite artists. Standouts were In It For The Money, Tonight and You Can See Me
Original and sounds great!
OK I'm not a huge fan of the whole Brit-pop thing, I do still struggle with, what I now perceive as the dumbing down of British creativity and its subsequent surge in popularity. However nothing is that simple, the whole thing was a weird transitional phase for me which I found annoying at the time. More on this subject when certain bands/albums which irked me at the time will surely appear. Supergrass, back then I thought they were fronted by a weird looking monkey man, which was refreshing in itself! I didn't mind their debut, but this was a much more polished, accomplished affair. I don't think there is a bad track on this LP. 'Late in the Day' is probably my favourite Supergrass song, the other singles are quality too. No fillers. A high 4 or low 5.
Got a new banger out of this one so max points for that
I put off listening to this one all day because I had a notion that it wouldn’t be all that interesting to me. Well, I was wrong. I really liked it. Had it not been such a pleasant surprise, then maybe it was a 4 for me, but…
I don't know why these guys make me think of the beach --- they look pretty chilly on the cover --- but they totally do. My notes about I Should Coco mention summer. And In It for the Money gave me loads of sunshiny feelings. Maybe there's something about them that reminds me of California bands like The Dickies and Redd Kross and Jellyfish. Anyway, I love their sparkly tunes and melodious vocals. I was uplifted!
The first Supergrass album was great. This one is great too! A terrific collection of fun poppy-punky confections I could eat all day!
Good album britpop still a amazing era
Super fun classic altrock britpop
10/10 - I don’t know why I was skeptical of getting into Supergrass every album literally blows me away, reducing me to atoms
Fantastic, hits all the right notes and just brilliant stuff
good guitar sound at first songs
Had I discovered Supergrass when I was younger, I undoubtedly would have been a fan.
I had never even heard of this band before, but this album is incredible. Impeccable riffs, vocal hooks, gorgeous song structures... this is why I use this site, man.
No notes. 5/5
God I love every second of this album. When I was a kid I was taken on holiday against my will (as I was a grumpy teenager in my own personal hell) and brought my guitar, sat for two weeks and learned to play along every note of it. That means nothing to anyone else but it means everything to me.
An unexpected gem.
Loved it. sounds like oasis meets an early 00s alternative rock band like franz ferdinand or something like that.
Loved this album! How have I never heard of this band. Great songs.
Outstanding.
This made me feel like I was standing in front of the pyramid stage at Glastonbury Festival, watching the best live set of my life. I had completely underestimated Supergrass until I listened to this album. Fantastic.
baita som, surpreendente
fajne
Great album. Memories of youth flooding back.
Absolutely brilliant album.
They were great
Simply great album. Sounds a little bit like Oasis, but there is a lot of freshness in their music. Vocal is exciting and doesn't bring nauseating thoughts, like Gallagher brothers (whoever is the singing one). The opening songs are straight up hits, like "In It For The Money", "Richard III", and "Tonight". Really entertaining british rock, looking forward to buying a vinyl record of this album!
meh
jävla pangalbum alltså
I loved this. Great songwriting, really cool use of vocal harmonies and guitar. Kinda all over the place. Creative and charismatic.
Supergrass was one of those bands I was aware of but never listened to in the 90's. I'm now very much kicking myself for not having checked this out earlier. This album has so much great stuff in it; kind of seems like a precursor to proggy rock bands like Closure in Moscow. Instant fan.
A mature album with very little filler.
This was so much fun! Much better than a lot of 90s rock-pop I've listened to
This list has made me a Supergrass fan. Between this album and I Should Coco, I'm all in on Supergrass. Thanks 1001 Albums!
Didn't know what to expect from these guys, but I was pleasantly surprised. Funky, edgy, alternative music that has a high relisten value.
OMFG this is very fucking good 10/10
Yes yes yes please
never thought I'd like it
Some songs are boring or not really that interesting but most of them have a really catchy tune. Love it. Def will listen to them more. Love Sex! Really funny and real song.
One of the most under rated British bands. This is my favourite album of theirs..... an easy 5
Really cool funky garage rock
really enjoyed this
Brilliant.
This one was really fun. There's a good chance I'm gonna be a sucker for anything with that much organ and horns.
Fav songs: - In it for the money - Late in the day - Sun Hits The Sky - Hollow Little Reign - Wait for the Sun
Classic
Surprised by this one, a band I slept on but a great album!
Gran descubrimiento este disco no conocia ni al grupo ni el disco, muy variado y divertido
Great album. Not a lot of time to listen but I can’t wait to sink my teeth into it a bit more!
When i saw that 'alright' wasn't on this, i was sad, as i thought it was all i knew by them... turns out i was wrong. Banger after banger. Super album.
Huge sound, total party/ cruise vibe. Thunderous bass, crunchy guitars, shouty vocals, groovy drums. 60s-70s influences
Another great album, another 5
He adorado!!!!
I didn't think it would be this good. It's a shame I ignored Supergrass for a while. I assumed they were some folk-rock group. "In It For the Money"'s title track starts the album off with a bang. Nearly every track that follows is a treat. 4 stars for "In It For the Money".
Favourite Songs: Richard III Sun Hits The Sky
The second disc is amazing
Dig this more than Coco. Really enjoyed the Britpoppy sound they bring in the album. Not as quirky as Coco.
I'm a late convert to Supergrass (and their singer Gaz Coombes' solo works). Just like Doves, even though they don't necessarily sound much alike. I originally thought they were fun but maybe a bit too... Just fun and games. In reality, there's an underlying depth and melancholy to that facade of rambunctiousness. Great album, even though I can understand how one might dismiss it as just another britpop entry on this list. It isn't.
finally some good dang pop alt rock (alt pop rock? idk) arranging. none of the performances are particularly noteworthy, but that goes both ways - everything works together, and it's fun, energetic, and varied.
Almost tempted to give this 5 stars by virtue of the fact that I had never heard of them and was extremely pleasantly surprised. But as it is, I think this is a solid 4.
I enjoyed this a lot. I didn't think I was familiar but there's something nostalgic about it, I think maybe my mum liked them. I like how massive the sound is, it can get pretty noisy but it's still pretty hooky and catchy. The vocals are good too, I thought they were a bit different from what you normally hear from Britpop. I was fearful when Late In The Day came on as it felt Oasis coded but I actually enjoyed that one a lot too Looking forward to the other Supergrass album Highlights: Late In The Day, In It For The Money, Sun Hits The Sky, Tonight
Very good
Always one of the better bands that got lumped in with ‘Britpop’. Lots of cool stuff here, including ‘Richard III’, ‘Sun Hits The Sky, ‘Going Out’ and a slew of lesser known tracks. Worth a second look, for sure.
4/5 Favorite Song: In It For The Money
Supergrass are a band that weren't even on my radar until this and I've really enjoyed both the albums that I've listened to so far. Maybe I'll listen to some more in my own time. Who knows.
Sometimes strays a bit close to the mediocre but overall a decently solid album 4*
I went into this listen already as a big fan of Supergrass, and I’ve always had a lot of love for In It for the Money, so I was really looking forward to revisiting it. This album instantly takes me back to the sound of my Britpop youth. It’s catchy, energetic and an absolute joy to listen to. This is feel-good indie music done properly — full of hooks, attitude and that effortless cool that made Supergrass stand out from so many of their peers. The musicianship is excellent throughout. The band sound tight, confident and full of energy, with great guitar work, strong melodies and that unmistakable Supergrass bounce. What I love most is how fun the album feels without ever sounding lightweight — there’s real quality in the songwriting. There are so many great tracks here that transport me straight back to that era. Songs like “Sun Hits the Sky”, “Richard III” and “Late in the Day” are peak 90s indie for me and still sound fantastic today. This is an album I’ll happily keep coming back to. Favourite tracks: “Richard III” is an absolute belter Least favourite tracks: Every track earns its place on the album Album artwork: Really cool album cover
Solid supergrass in the 90s
This is my type of music
This is the second day in a row where it has been a band that I never heard of, but that I really liked. This one gets four stars.
Great album, real mix of styles and songs throughout, fantastic noise from a three piece band
8/10 Great and varied instrumentals, I like that. Intriguing mix of old sounding music but composed in modern way? I am not sure if that is correct explanation. It has the potential to advance to 9/10 in the future.
B+
Oh shit, I had to backtrack to find that this is the same band that made ‘I Should Coco’, the Kinks-if-they-spit-on-you album that I liked. Thankfully, I also like this! Less of a straightforward rock album with its horn arrangements and pop-inflections, but it makes for an even more fun, rollicking listen. Includes some slower moments to catch your breath that are also not boring (“Late in the Day”). (Gaz’s voice reminds me of Billy Corgan. Surely that’s not just me?) If I may: Oasis with some more ideas.
4.5
The more I listened the more I liked it. It felt like the classic rock at its core, but played in the style of late 90’s alt rock.
I've been sleeping on this album. A very worthy sequel to their fantastic debut record. 7/10
Very cool album. Wasn't expecting the vibe from looking at the album cover but I lowkey dig it. Great music.
Britpop :))))))
This is an incredibly sharp evolution from their debut, trading simple pop punk energy for something far more textured and dark. The horn arrangements and heavy, distorted basslines give the tracks a phenomenal grit, proving they had the chops to move past standard Britpop into something deeply satisfying.
Pleasantly surprised. I thought I was walking into another 1960/70's album but it was range and depth. Good BPM
When I saw this cover I first thought this was folk album from the 70s. Nope. Shocked I've never heard this actually. Seems like something I would have been all over in 97 but I get the feeling this wasn't that big in the States. Either way it was a fun modern rock album. Question whether it's really worthy of this list. It wasn't bad it's just no Dark Side of the Moon. It was fine.
o.o
Expected to enjoy this, based on my recollection of Supergrass way back when. Enjoyed it even more than I expected
3.5
A really solid Brit Pop record. I’ve never held them in the top tier of the genre, but this was a good listen.
Some punk heat right there.
4/5
This album just screams feel good 90s vibes. Makes me want to drive around with the windows down and purchase sub $2 gas.
What an absolute banger! This has so much life and joy and skill its impossible not to smile along. I was a big fan first time around and was blown away as a 14 year old at V96 seeing Supergrass smash it so i have no objectivity but it stands the test of time. Gaz Coombes song writing continues a long line of great british songwriters and is sorely under rated as is his voice. If you emjoyed this, look for his later solo work as it continues to be brilliant.
Was surprised to find out I already knew a song from here. Quite a good album, nothing really here to complain about. The right amount of noise for me with good track length and album length in general.
I liked this! I'll definitely want to re listen someday.
Much better than i expected l, and a fun 90s record for sure. No huge standouts, so it’s a loow 4, but i cant give it a 3, since id love to listen again
I think I've got the same issue here that I have with 'I Should Coco'. It's decent when they start shredding the guitars, but overall it still blends into a forgettable experience. I could not tell you a single song that I remembered after hearing it. But I will say that in contrast to the debut, it's a lot more lively with a can-do attitude. I did appreciate that!
Ever wished something like the white stripes wasn't a two-piece? Boy do I have a record for you. Yes I do hear smashing pumpkins in here occasionally... But I'm into that... so, nice. Only that last song is quite a bit too much circus act and should be skipped.
I wasn't really expecting much from this album, but was pleasantly surprised. I do think this album is a little front loaded, and I was feeling a little tired of it by the end, but overall I still had a good time. They surprisingly reminded me of Smashing Pumpkins, the singer sounds a lot like them, and some of the songs sounded like they could have been MCIS B-sides. Mid 4.
I know I’ve got something good on my hands when every song has me both sad to leave it but excited for the next one. Great energy and composition. The variety of dynamics and style was really great. I love it! Favorite Song: Going Out Least Favorite Song: G-Song
Pretty strong overall album. No song stuck out as amazing but several really good ones. Will definitely revisit.
I was aware of Supergrass at the time but didnt really give them a listen, kind of assumed they were a one trick pony. Turns out I was wrong! I really like this album and can see why its on the list.
Certainly not the most annoying Brit pop on the list.
brit brats on the loose nosy voices scratch guitars quite infectious grooves
прекрасно ахуительно
Lots I really like on this - the theremin on Richard III, incredible organ sound on Going Out - the latter and Tonight are the ones I still hit up from time to time and often get sucked into listening to more.
One of the stronger mid-late britpop era offerings. Less energy yet more mature than their previous release. Solid, and enjoyable high 3/low 4. Is it truly deserving of a place on this list though?
I liked this more and more as it went on. Hell yeah. Love something new to me that I want to listen to again. Lots of fun here. One of those moments where I'm glad I got sent to the edition with the bonus disc because 20 foot Halo sounds like the Stones would have made if they'd been young in the '90s. Absolute banger of a track. I'd heard of Supergrass, and knew Alright, but had never delved deeper. I will now.
This is an underrated Britpop album and band
I like this album. Tracks began to sound similar but still pretty ingenious on some. I would listen again and seek out other albums by them.
This was great! I guess I’m becoming a 90s Brit pop guy? Totally unfamiliar with this, and based on the band name and album cover this was not at all what I was expecting. Played it through twice.
Just a pure fun album. I’m not going to say it doesn’t take itself too seriously (except maybe for SEX!) because there is really good and varied instrumentation, but it knows how to be really interesting and try a bunch of things without being up its own ass or being too avant garde. Great album.
Temu oasis but still pretty good
Better than I expected by a mile
Of this era , I really like this and much prefer this album to their debut album too
Almost didn't listen, honestly.
Was really impressed with this one. Having only heard their debut and liked it enough, their follow-up definitely clicked with me more. I really like what they’re doing with the low-fi approach with some really interesting song structures to give them a step up on other standard Brit Pop acts. A touch of psych is mixed in as well, prominent on my fave track, You Can See Me. 4 stars
Furn, high energy, musical - me gusta mucho. I was on a Supergrass jag a couple years ago but had forgotten about them. This was a nice reawakening.
Was pretty good tbf. Can't remember any single song, but all in all decent.
Lately I've had no ability to summon sophisticated musical opinions. I like this a lot, but not as much as I Should Coco. I'd never heard them before and got it in my first few weeks on the generator, fell head over heels and gave it a 5. In hindsight it might have been more like a 4.5, so this is more like a 4. All the things I love about Britpop while also feeling like it's not a part of anyone else's movement.
One of four absolute gems (out of six studio albums of consistent quality) by criminally underrated not-quite Britpop band. In It For The Money is a real blast. It's melodic, textured, ambitious, with some slower, more introspective tracks (Late In The Day is superb) giving it a gravitas that catapults the album into the 'great' bracket. It is brilliant fun, though, and when it's over, you can only think: wow. And put on another Supergrass album.
Dig it! This album's new to me. I only knew their hits before like "caught by the fuzz," which is always enjoyed. Will enjoy more
As much as I love to hate on britpop, this was very solid
approved, soprattutto alcune canzoni
Some of the most inventive rock i have hesrd. Not as good as i should coco
Loved this album! Never heard of Supergrass before now, but really enjoyed this. A mix of 90s grunge with heavy influence of the 60s & 70s-- something like ELO meets Smashing Pumpkins. Really cool sound! "Cheapskate" was the favorite track off of this one.
I hear here a little of Pablo honey. But again less depressed.
Epic and seminal genre defining album one of the top from Guitaristic Britpop
Solid album from Supergrass, but didn’t enjoy it as much as the other album I got of theirs. 3.5 / 5
I think if you cut the fat from this and I Should Coco you could mash em together into an inarguably fantastic album that deserves to be on the list. As it is, I liked both of them, but there’s absolutely no need for two Supergrass albums on the list.
Second Supergrass album I've got on here. As a dude from the US who's only heard of Supergrass and not listened to them, I thought I Should Coco was a pretty good album, and this one I think is a small step up from that one. A little more varied, a little more mature.
Con los bangers que son los dos primeros temas, creo que decae un poco a lo largo del album. Me gustó pero no tanto como I Should Coco, creo que son para audiencias distintas. 3,75
Disc 2 is superior but it’s a solid album all the way thru
Really, really enjoyed this. This is the britpop I want to hear...and quite frankly, I think I'd prefer this over Oasis. Oasis has some anthems that are undeniable, but there's something about this album that feels a little more complete and cohesive. Not sure how to describe it, but I liked this a lot. Not quite a 5, but still something I liked a lot and would return to.
A more somber affair than the band's previous album, the brilliant debut I Should Coco (how could it not be?) In It For The Money is also more varied than I Should Coco and while that's part of the album's strength it also makes In It For The Money a less tidy sonic boom than I Should Coco an album that played mostly in primary colors where In It For The Money is more of a kaleidoscope of sounds sometimes sounding like 2 or 3 different bands in a single song. It all makes for a strong sophomore album proving to the punters that Supergrass is not a one great album band like Elastica or even The La's a band whose influence can be heard here and there on In It For The Money as it can be heard in countless UK bands from 1991 to 1998 and beyond if less sparingly. Why do so many UK bands break up after one brilliant album or sound like they should have by the second or third album? Who knows but Supergrass are a band in it for the long haul if not the money.
Sliiightly disappointed by this album, simply because I was so blown away with their debut. Still a really fun listen, but less standout tracks on this album. Still a 4 though
When we were backpacking around New Zealand back in 2009, I jumped out of an airplane. They say that the stimulus overload brought on by this crazy action means that your brain doesn't fully comprehend or register what's happening for a few moments. That's why it's a good idea to get a video of your skydive to help trigger those memory responses afterwards. What I do remember is shuffling to the edge of the open door, wrapping my feet underneath the underside of the outside of the plane, and the moment just after we jumped, when we flipped upside down giving us a perfect view of the plane we'd just been sitting in as it flew away without us. What I also remember is the song "Sun Hits the Sky" by Supergrass. We picked "Skydive Taupo" to do our jump for a number of reasons. As well as their safety record and positive reviews, they offered the highest jump a beginner could do (the longer you fall, the more you remember), and they offered a video of your skydive set to music of your choosing. They had a lot of music options that fitted my discerning taste buds, broken down into sections such as "pre-jump", "freefall" and "parachute". For the freefall, both of us picked "Sun Hits the Sky" by Supergrass. So I'll forever associate the song with my one and only skydive. It immediately brings me back to that incredible moment when the plane continued on without us. Supergrass were always a band I liked, from when "Alright" was blasted all over our TVs and radios, alongside other hits like "Caught by the Fuzz" from their first album. But it was after seeing them support Oasis at Lansdowne Road in 2000 that I really started to pay attention to them. They were promoting their next album, which has become a particular favourite of mine, but they obviously played a lot from this album as part of their setlist too. They were the big talking point of that gig. No shade on Oasis, who were excellent, but everyone came out from that gig talking about how great Supergrass were. In this album in particular, they remind me of a very particular 60s sound that I can't quite put my finger on. I hear The Kinks, Small Faces, The Monkees, early The Who, and even a bit of Revolver era Beatles. Supergrass manage to somehow sound reminiscent of older mod rock, while sounding completely new and unique at the same time. Every single song on the album is fantastic. Upbeat, rocky, original and catchy as hell. I had remembered "Richard III" being a great rock song (verging on punk), but I'd forgotten just how great songs like "Late in the Day" or "Going Out" were. All in all, throughout the album they just sound like a band that are having a lot of fun making great music. Some albums stick to a memory. For me, this one is 15,000 feet above Lake Taupo, watching my plane fly away without me.
Pretty good rock album.
Fun weaving of alt-grunge-pop-punk. I was trying to decipher the genre that shone through most, but ultimately, decided not to pigeonhole and just enjoy!
Really cool smashing pumpkins vibe
В контексте бритпопа обычно эта группа не всплывает, хотя их послушать приятно
Hard not to sound a little like Oasis when you’re a UK rock band in the 90s, but these guys do so in the best way. Really fun album, will come back to it.
Always loved a bit of Britpop! But some really catchy and creative songs on here. Will listen again for sure
Liked this a lot — a good start to the second half of our journey.
LOL I did a double-take when I saw this album art. I had I Should Coco two days ago, and commented that after the album finished, Spotify kept playing Supergrass songs, which didn't bother me. This is the album it played next, so I've already heard it.
Early 90s grunge! I dig it, love it and went through most of it but got bored
Has at least two GOATS on it, hard to not give it a 4.
Hadn't heard of this band, this was a decent album
Came into this only being familiar with Alright. Nice little late 90’s alt rock album in the vein of Oasis but with a splash of psych/funk. Really enjoyed The Sun Hits The Sky. Dug the guitar in Its Not Me too.
Interesting, we just did the Vines, which I couldn't quite get above 2. This album is similar in many ways, but yet it's just better. I can't say why it's better, but it unquestionably is, at least to my pallet. I guess it's more interesting instrumentation, and while it's driving and steady, it's not monotonous. I was flinching between 2 and 3 for the vines, it's between 3 and 4 for this one.
I had no idea what to expect going into this one, but after about eight or nine straight days of two and three star albums, this felt like a breath of fresh air. It grabbed me pretty quickly and didn’t let go. Richard III is a straight banger. It’s got that perfect mid 90s post grunge energy and just rips. But what really pushed this album up for me were the little touches. The bongos near the end of Sun Hits the Sky were a really cool surprise, and the tablas toward the end of Sometimes I Make You Sad caught my ear right away. I love hearing Eastern instruments worked into Western rock when it’s done well. Overall, this was a great change of pace and way more interesting than I expected. Favorite song: Richard III
In it for the money - 4 Richard III - 5 Tonight - 4 Late in the day - 4 G-song - 4 Sun hits the sky - 3 Going out - 5 It's not me - 3 Cheapskate - 4 You can see me - 4 Hollow little rain - 3 Sometimes I make you sad - 2
I used to have a notion that these guys were Britpop, but having listened to a couple of albums now, Britrock is more accurate. There's a noisier, punkier aspect to this than I would have expected from the few singles I know.
Extremely fun listen. First four songs absolutely slap, while the rest of the album still bangs but could be lifted by a little more energy. Really cool album, particularly like the title track, Richard III, and the funkiness of Sometimes I Make You Sad
From the outset of Supergrass’s second album, "In It For The Money", the title track sets the tone with its excellent use of dynamics, melody, and infectious vocal hooks. This level of craftsmanship defines the record; track by track, it is a more thoughtfully constructed album than its predecessor, and it is all the better for it. It is a rare beast: a second album that improves upon a massive debut by embracing complexity without sacrificing the playful energy of their earlier work. Standout moments include the snarling 'Richard III' (complete with that iconic 'wooooh!'), the superb 'Late in the Day', the effervescent 'Sun Hits the Sky', the gritty, funky 'Cheapskate' and the moody "You Can See Me" with excellent vocals from Gaz Coombes. "In It For The Money" proved that Supergrass were arguably the most musically gifted and versatile band of the Britpop era. It remains an essential 1990s classic that has aged far more gracefully than many of its contemporaries. Four stars. 1. "In It for the Money" – (4/5) 2. "Richard III" – (5/5) 3. "Tonight" – (4/5) 4. "Late in the Day" – (5/5) 5. "G-Song" – (4/5) 6. "Sun Hits the Sky" – (5/5) 7. "Going Out" – (4/5) 8. "It's Not Me" – (4/5) 9. "Cheapskate" – (5/5) 10. "You Can See Me" – (5/5) 11. "Hollow Little Reign" – (4/5) 12. "Sometimes I Make You Sad" – (3/5) Total - 52 Average - 4.33 211/1001 119/211 albums reviewed were new to me.
Fun Brit rock album with some catchy tunes
Last album of 2025! I swear this experience is trying to turn me into a Supergrass fan (and it may be working). I loved "I Should Coco" and was excited to listen to more from them. I did enjoy this album, but not nearly as much as their debut. I would probably give this album a 3.5/5 if I could, but for the sake of this experience I have no problem giving this album a 4/5. I also saw that this is the only other Supergrass album on the list so I may have to check out the rest of their catalogue sometime in th coming year.
- My gut instinct is that Supergrass' 1999 eponymous third album was their peak and an easy 5 star album. Listening to this beaut though, it's hard to find too many faults, much like their wonderful debut. - The sound here is fuller and more developed than 'Coco' and shows a band developing their style with confidence. - The singles are fantastic; Going Out, Sun Hits The Sky and Richard III could be whipped out at any given moment for a hit of adrenaline, but you've also got brilliant deeper cuts like Tonight and Late In The Day. For me it tails off a little in the final third. Not sure who needs to read this but absolutely get onto the follow-up. It's one of the albums of the entire decade, and a very strong decade at that. I almost want to award the fifth star here by proxy.
Corking album, should listen to it more than I do.
Doesn’t really do anything their debut didn’t so probably doesn’t need to be on here but I like supergrass
Started off not digging it, but was thoroughly enjoying by the end. Will require another listen.
Hm never heard of these guys before. But being a 97 album, it has potential. hm, to be honest I thought this was going to be bluegrass. Listened to most this album. I'll give it a
I always think of Supergrass as having completely fallen off after a genre defining debut, and while I do think that to be mostly true, I often forget that this album is actually still really good. It doesn't have the energy or playfulness of I Should Coco, but it's still a solid, well made and even slightly more mature album that sees them taking a slightly different direction. It's just a shame that every album after this is just a pool of mediocrity given how many possibilities they had after releasing this.
7 - GOOD
Well this was a lot of fun. I once saw them at a general admission venue. We ended up in the 2nd row. The Coral opened for Supergtass and my cousin and I both thought that they blew Supergrass away! Whatever happened to the Coral? Liked Songs Added: Ri hard III Tonight Late In The Day Going Out Sun Hits The Sky
I like this album, and it's one of my favorites by Supergrass. I don't know if I think it deserves to be on this list, as it is "just" really good Brit Rock, a mix of the Rolling Stones and the 90's Brit Rock sound, but I do really like it personally.
This band escaped me in the 90s. I don't know if I would have appreciated it back then, but I like it now.
I liked this more than average, can’t really put my finger on why but it hit me on a good day I guess. 4/5
Very strong start, a bit weak at the end but a great album. Influences of jazz in there
Overall: 7/10 This one is pretty fun actually! I had the other Supergrass album (did they really need two?) pop up a while ago and wasn't blown away by it, so I was worried that this one would be a sophomore slump of sorts. Thankfully, I think it's an improvement, and I can't imagine this band gets any better than this. Not every album needs to be a masterpiece, and this is a good one for you to just vibe to. Fav Song: Going Out
Very good but I would still probably stick to the Best Of
they have some kind of tom waits thing going on
Riktigt nice britpop! Kommer säkert sätta på flera gånger i framtiden :)
I like Supergrass. I like this album. Is it a vitally important album of modern music despite its fun? Not sure how revolutionary it was. Still great mind. Gets a 4 especially as 'Sun hits the sky' was playing with a beautiful sunrise on the way to work.
Not their best album but very dark for an indie album (especially Sometimes I Make You Sad). Still great (Sun Hits the Sky, Richard III, Late in the Day) though.
This is great. Sounds great, great energy. Lots of fun to listen to. I really like the overall sound, it's very wide and full, really drives home the grooves of the tracks. I think my only complaint is that I think the songs are a bit lacking. They're not bad, some are brilliant, but it's not an album where I am captivated from start to finish, I am by the sound, but not by the songs themselves, so I can't give it a 5.
Good music, but not as good as their debut. Love the horns in this one
Pretty banging album
Did not know this band at all before but i really enjoyed the groove of the earlier tracks especially. I do enjoy some solid rock beats
Very groovy, but nothing groundbreaking, in my opinion. Some of these will get listened to again in the future, but not the full album.
I love the cover with the album name - really captures the experience of being a musician, and gives an idea that the band is taking things lightly but puts an effort to well-craft that lightness. The listening experience matches this assessment - well crafted songs that aren't too self-serious . That said, I'm not a big britpop fan and I'm not a big fan of the vocals. Also the album has a gritty noise to it that makes it a tiring listen from start to finish. I can imagine the singles being fun to listen to, but I can't imagine putting the vinyl from start to finish.
Nice album! 90s brit pop I guess.
The Good: We are going to get properly stoned! The Bad: Turns out Supergrass has nothing to do with weed… The Ugly: Wondering what they’ve done with all their money… Never heard of this group, as I wasn’t even near the EU continent at that time, so I guess that makes sense. For once I will say that I appreciate the fact that Mr Dimery is again focusing on bands that only those living within a certain geography might have heard about. But here’s the bad part… I can’t recall a singly song… not 1… and I’ve listened to the album several times… Anyway, I will over score this one as I know I will appreciate listening to this again at some point in the future… 4*
More fun and faster than average brit pop. I like it, but I like their other album in the book better. I don't think they need 2. favorite song: sun hits the sky
Good listen.
Album cover makes you think it's going to be some winter/bluegrass kind of deal. Supergrass is in this album making their best impression of what the beatles could do in the 90's, love the title track, it slowly builds from the keyboard intro with the guitar arpeggio and when the brass kick in you are golden Also how the first track transitions into Richard 3rd(killer theremin solo). Sun Hits the Sky with the bass and drums outro, there are a lot of interesting choices in the album, but I feel like it misses an Alright kind of track that could've sold this album to America, but whatever. Wish the last track didn't had that annoying drum machine that overpowered everything else. 4/5
Very solid album, lots of energy.
Just like the other album in the list I had to listen (from 1995) it’s actually quite good! Carchy songs, not too basic, energetic, good compositions! I do hate their album covers
I've always found Supergrass overrated. Tracks like "Alright" and "Pumping On Your Stereo" are overplayed and cringey IMO, though I do like "Moving". This album changes my opinion of them entirely. Vocals are great, guitars and drums are well balanced. It's energetic and brilliant.
This is the second Supergrass album I've encountered on the list and having never listened to them before, I was surprised to enjoy both. I think the other one was a little better but this was more like a 3.5
Not a big fan of how this one was produced. The mix is very washy. Not many other complaints, almost five stars.
Oasis. 3,5, ale podciągnę do 4.
A decent album, so easy to listen to.
God driv i låtene! Syns ikkje det var någen sanger som stakk seg veldig ut... men likte godt rytmen og rocken i heile greiå. Beste sang: Cheapskate
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this- Supergrass rocks hard but manages to keep things up-beat and enjoyable. Kind of an interesting mix of punk, rock, and a proto-alternative sound. Overall- a lot of fun 3.5 to 4
Senior year of high school, my English teacher used to reference Richard III by walking around with a hunch back and making a weird face. That was a thousand times more memorable than the song of the same name, or anything else on this good but forgettable ripoff of (What’s the Story) Morning Glory.
Diggin it. Never heard this before, but I'll be back
Fun guitar-driven rock. Well recorded, with enough uniqueness to warrant a mention on this list, imo. Not sure I can agree with the over the top reviews it garnered at the time, though I recall at that time as the Seattle sound era waned that there was a plethora of ass rock that made an album like this a refreshing breath of fresh air, so perhaps the reviewers were just so relieved to not have to listen to another turntable driven butt rock album. Still, pretty damned good.
I really enjoyed this! I liked the sound a lot, happy to have discovered this!
Pretty damn good 90s rock album. It held my attention through the entire thing and had me tapping my toes and shaking my leg like crazy. Definitely worth your time.
Here come Supergrass with another album full of zippy bangers about being a weirdo - like The Kinks after a few cans of Special Brew. I miss the version of the 90s that this record brilliantly evokes! Great fuzz. Favourite tracks: In It For The Money, Richard III, Sun Hits The Sky, It's Not Me
I don't think I've ever listened to this album before, so I was surprised how many songs I knew - I guess there were a lot of singles from it. And with good reason, because there are a bunch of catchy songs on here (though perhaps still none quite as good as Alright).
Here I am listening to In It For The Money and I am thinking that maybe Supergrass had more American influences than might be typical for a Britpop band. Specifically, I was listening to "G-Song" and getting Tom Petty vibes. Later on the album I was thinking I heard some Talking Heads inspiration. Well, I found a 2015 interview with Gaz Coombes where he named his 13 favorite albums. Of the 13 albums, 10 were "American" artists, which includes both North and South America. Talking Heads was on there and I felt good about myself. Gaz also likes On A Beach by Neil Young. Now, is it just me or could Gaz be the lovechild of a supermodel and Neil Young? I will say it is plausible.
i'm not too familiar with britpop, but after listening to this album i'm wondering if i need to amend that. while the britpop years were a little before my time, i was around for its immediate successors - most of which i grew up listening to and are largely responsible for my music tastes today. the problem, though, is that of britpop's immediate successors that influenced me, i would say almost all of them were turns away from the dominant genre's trappings and status quo (bloc party comes to mind), or were otherwise so sonically self-determined that they could eclipse whatever precedent had been set by britpop (radiohead comes to mind). of the post-britpop scene (coldplay, travis, et. al.), i feel mostly ambient disinterest with a sprinkling of active disgust. ergo: i probably wouldn't like britpop, right?? but i liked this a lot more than i expected to - it was fun, snappy, and i saved almost all the songs off this album. there was a lot more variation in sound and style than i was expecting!! i have errant musings about this album's sound and development late into the britpop timeline - i'll be interested to hear earlier britpop classics and what this album might've taken / not taken from precedent. highlights - richard iii, late in the day, g-song, sun hits the sky, it's not me, cheapskate, you can see me, sometimes i make you sad
Not bad - I liked it more than a lot I've given 3 stars.
Their second album. Rock / Indie / Brit Pop. Loved it. A perfect album to listen to whilst I was walking the beaches of the Indian Ocean on another sunny day on Western Australia. Some great tracks, including Richard III and Going Out. A fun album.
Had never heard them before, was super pleasantly surprised and shocked that I hadn’t heard this previously. It’s great. A new favourite.
4.5
Dug it
Uneven, but a fun sound. "Sometimes I Make You Sad" is a very fun sound.
Supergrass continues to impress! Sun Hits the Sky, G-Song, Richard III, a Cheapskate are excellent songs and seem like they were good enough to be hits in the US back in ‘97. Still not sure how these guys stayed under the radar until the 1001 Must Hear List. (3.9*s)
Another solid entry by Supergrass. Glad that 1001 exposed me to these guys. They are a good example of the 90's rock sound. There isn't anything overly special about what they are doing but they manage to string together a handful of catchy songs through both albums so far. Definitely an overlooked band as I hadn't heard of them previously. Their sound is pretty simple but something about it works. I'll have to check out some more of their stuff beyond this list.
Lots of different alt rock ideas, most of which were well written and enjoyable
This is the second Supergrass record, I came familiar with it for Richard III, that was featured in Flatout 2 for PS2. Every song sounds great, and the energy changed from the first record to this one. This sounds like a more grounded band and play everything with intention and with soul. From start to finish it is enjoyable, brings good energy and makes you craving for more. I had this in rotation already, and it's good everytime I listen to it. Super recommended.
Good mix of some weird and some more standard sounding rock tracks.
My favorite album by them and such a classic Brit pop album. Great band and great sound.
I'm so tired of Britpop in this God forsaken book/site. Fuck you Colin Larkin. I think it's important that, even though I am over hearing non-stop Britpop, I need to remain impartial and RELATIVELY unbiased. As such, I hate myself for admitting I enjoyed this. I Should Coco was definitely their more well-known and popular album - I wasn't expecting to see Supergrass on here a second time. It makes sense that I Should Coco is more popular, I don't think this thing had any standout singles or hits on it. Cheapskate was the most annoying song, which had this weird popping bass noise throughout the non-chorus sections of the song. I had to pause the song a couple of times to confirm if it was actually the song or if it was my bogan neighbours playing their shitty lad-rap while putting new '420 blaze it' stickers on their disgusting Commodores. The chorus was good but outside of that the poppy bass which was off-key was horrible and made the song almost unlistenable. Sometimes I Make You Sad sounded like something out of the open world platforming parts of Crash Tag Team Racing. Not a great way to end an album but it was pretty funny. I didn't listen to the CD extras, 43 minutes of (admittedly enjoyable) Britpop is enough for me for one day. Anyways, good listen - unfortunately Britpop.
Have I spent too much time in the musical deprivation chamber that is Britpop or was this actually kinda good
Good Indie album very much of its time - thoroughly enjoyable listen
Bangin
Great
Great bunch of lads
Such an enjoyable album! Sun Hits the Sky and Late in the Day both cracker.
My favourite Supergrass album. I should Coco is amazing but this was a much more mature sound and songwriting. The title track is one of my favourite album openers, and Richard III easily sits amongst my favourite British rock songs of the 90s - I bought the single on a school trip to Dublin , cruelly kept off Number One by R Kelly, shame on you all.
That was enjoyable.
Don't think I'd ever listened to a full Supergrass album before this and it was great
Decent album, never really got into these guys.
Out of all the britpop albums I've heard, this one easily packs the most punch. Usually the genre is more about those elegant, theatrical ballads, but this band gives some raw performances with a lot of energy (even a bit metal-esque at parts?). A lot of fun, probably my favorite new discovery from this thing so far. Only thing is that it's a bit frontloaded
This is a band I kept hearing about and being told to check out, but I never really dove in until much later. My first exposure was the “Pumping on Your Stereo” video, with that cheeky, over-the-top energy perfectly sums up what makes them so good. Listening to "In It For The Money" now, it’s clear how much fun they were having. It’s confident, loud, and full of that Britpop swagger, but it also feels sharper and more musical than most of their peers. They’ve got that classic British rock punch, with clever hooks, fuzzy guitars, and a kind of joyful chaos that makes me wonder how I didn’t become a bigger fan.
Great tunes on here.
Love the album. I much prefer the first one, but this has a lot of bangers songs.
Another album I really liked from a group I never heard before.
This could be so much better, had I not found Gaz Coombes' vocals in most songs here annoying. It’s not his voice, but the manner: there’s just too much of it. When he dials it back (like in Late In The Day’s opening or Hollow Little Reign), he actually shines. The music itself brings a lot of energy, fan and surprising diversity I appreciate, flipping between classic rock swagger and genuine creativity. The instrumental breaks, buoyed by crisp production, are the album’s real highlights. Lyrically, it’s classic Britpop: a muddle of earnest, whimsical, and downright nonsense. A tighter tracklist would’ve helped. As is, In It For The Money goes noticably harder in its first half, and frustratingly fumbles the finish. I’ve happilly saved a few tracks to playlists, but I don't think I'll be revisiting the full album. Highlights: Late In The Day, G-Song, Sun Hits The Sky, You Can See Me Why is this song here: Sometimes I Make You Sad
Unlike the band's debut album, which tried to get by with just attitude and volume (and fell short), the songwriting on their second record is more complex and sophisticated, but without losing any rock & roll punch. The Beatles/Kinks/Jam roots are still evident, but this record is a big step forward towards establishing their own identity.
No es un año cualquiera el 97 (30 años de otro inolvidable y fundamental año: el 67) con discos como Blur, Urban Hymns de The Verve, Ladies and Gentlemen we Are Floating in Space de Spiritualized, Vanishing Point de Primal Scream, Ok Computer de Radiohead, entre otros... y este destacó entre todos.
Got both Supergrass albums of the list one week apart. While I prefer I Should Coco, this one's pretty good in it's own right. As an album it doesn't feel as consistent, though. I'm a really big fan of their overall sound and energy and this one has some really banging solos, I especially liked that synth solo in Sun Hits the Sky.
Nice!
We got the first Supergrass album already, so I feel like I would have checked this one out at some point anyways? There's also a lot of this sort of stuff on The List? Still a solid album. Feels creative in its choice of instruments and sound effects, dreamlike at times. Might prefer it to their first one actually! I expected a lot worse based on the album cover.
Expected to like this, didn't expect to love it! Really catchy stuff, and I like the unique instrumentation. "Cheapskate" was a standout to me.
Schwankend zwischen 3 und 4 Sternen. Zeitweise hat mir richtig gut gefallen. Indierock, den ich früher gern gehört habe.
Biggest takeaway after the first listen is that these dudes seem like they'd be a good hang. And there's plenty of skillful musicality and interesting subjects to complement the high/positive energy. Had a good time.
I enjoyed this, felt more snappy and polished than I Should Coco. I'm not sure if I would listen to any of these tracks in isolation - they really work as a cohesive album.
This is up there with the Gene Clark album for faves from artists I haven't known before. The edge to the vocals and guitar every few songs really brought it home, and you can see some pre-Strokes and indie pop bands like Portugal the Man here.
Credit for being the first band that I had never heard of before (I think?) with two albums on here! Listening Notes: -Kind of a slow start to this album. The first couple tracks feel like kinda generic indie rock, but by the time we're to Tonight, they've come into their own -G-Song rocks. Really nice guitar theme here. I'm not listening to lyrics atm, but this is a banger -Like the circussy vibe on Sometimes I make you sad Review: Meh. Good, well put-together indie rock, but what this band is really innovating with escapes me. But I enjoyed my listens and the state fair style instrumentals in a few places were cool. I don't really have much to say here and probably coulda listened closer. But this is where I'm at. 3.5 rounded up to be nice.
I'm here for this style of Britpop. This was a better album than the other Supergrass album we've had so far, but I don't think this is enough to justify giving it five stars as I probably won't be coming back to listen to anything on this album again after this project is over.
I had never heard of this group, but I ended up liking them way more than I thought I would. They’re pretty good.
Seminal para mis años 90.
Damn, I really liked this album, but I feel like I barely got to listen to it. I'm tempted to repeat it tomorrow. full disclosure, I've just been too busy to really listen closely to the albums for the past week or so. I might address this by listening to the same album the next day instead of starting a new album. The goal is to discover new music, and it feels like some of these are flying by me.
This started out with such promise! I got into the first 8 tracks or so, I wish it had just ended there, the last few on the first discs were duds. I did end up listening to the second disc which were not part of the original track listings just incase, 'Sex!' was a funny little interlude, but I do wonder with lyrics like 'sometimes it stings, sometimes it burns' if you're doing it correctly, but then again maybe thats what you're in to? Who am I to judge. I'd listen to the first few tracks again, and I'm feeling generous today and frustrated with only having 5 stars to play with when sometimes I'd like to give something a 3.5
Standouts Tonight Late in the Day G-Song Cheapskate
Some really strong songs here. I had never heard of this band before and when I saw the cover, I was expecting a bluegrass band haha. Pleasantly surprised here. 4/5
Basics oasis - they sound the same and are also from same time in England
Some decent 90s brit pop. Between a 3 and a 4 for me.
Enjoyable britpop unknown to me before now. But I liked it.
This band is good
