Reviews (page 2 of 14)
I really liked this album. It's super gloomy and moody, with some great-sounding drums and swirly atmospheric guitars.
One of the best albums in the world of all time!
Yes yes Yes. Love the Cure and this album. 5 stars.
Absolute classic gothic rock. Influenced many of my favorite bands.
Having long hated The Cure's radio singles, I have been pleasantly surprised by each Cure album I've listened to, with this being the best I've heard so far.
Perfection
No bad songs. Classic cure sound. Amazing production as you’d expect. Love song and Fascination street great singles. Album actually gets better as it goes on
5/5 - Yup, this is THE Cure album.
One of the best albums ever.
Like the soundtrack to the most quintessentially 80’s movie ever. I love it.
One of my favorites
Sublime.
Really fun listen. Peppy.
Goth rock with hints of pop softness, and I love it to pieces. Important to me at 17, important to me now.
It's Friday, im in Cure.
Wonderful album. Rob Smith is a genius.
amazing
I love this album, I don't even care. It's like listening to a compilation of video game water levels. Perfect rainy day music.
Heard Before? Well, yeah. Notes: - like most Cure albums, it has only one idea, but it's a good one. - production is vague and foggy, and i mostly hate the drum sounds. - arrangements lack all the space that made their early albums so arresting, with lots of (i hate to admit) unnecessary synth pads. - at least we get lots of space (and extra emotional weight) with long instrumental passages and marvelous interplay between parts. - the album is too long. i get the long songs, but it would have more impact with fewer tracks. - that said, this is probably my favorite Cure record. i may get older, but my inner goth-poser sure doesn't. Verdict: Extra fun to sing along to if you replace all the lyrics with "I've got feeeeelings!" Listen Again? Well, yeah. I've got feelings too, you know.
Amazing album. Or I should say, an album with some truly amazing songs, intermixed with some less striking, but still stellar, music. This was close to 5 stars for me, but not quite consistent enough across the deep cuts.
I hate that anyone that loves the any album from The Cure automatically gets labeled "Goth". Dude - I listened to them fresh in College back in the day (yes I am old) which was Pre-Goth. Anyway.... this is a great album especially for anyone not familiar with the band. For some reason, Apple made it a triple album which was cool...
This album has inspired my music taste a lot, and was a record which my father would listen to on repeat in the car. Robert smith has a voice which does sings to me a different way. A lot of people don’t like the dragged out instrumentals but I think it gives the record so much character. Love it
This is my personal favorite Cure album. They moved past the pop BS of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
Prayers for Rain is a new favorite though
It starts out with a deeply atmospheric soundscape that immediately draws me in, and that feeling continues throughout the entire album. The synth and percussion layers create this gloomy, ghostly, lush, dreamy atmosphere, a very enticing arrangement. The lyrics feel like memories being narrated, like romantic metaphors, as if someone is retracing old thoughts. This would be what polished black chrome sounds like. Sonically this album is the sound of the end of a heartbreak, of melancholy, loneliness, and hopelessness, yet there’s a sense of hope, like the beginning of closure.
What beautiful melancholy. Slow, cold, crushing, haunting, masterfully arranged and impeccably produced - shimmering highs collide with booming lows. Favourite songs: Plainsong, Love Song, Last Dance, Disintegration
Very cool - iconic 80s goth vibes
Banging
An excellent goth album; highlights are love song and pictures of you.
I can never love the cure as much as dav but it was good
Love love love the cure. Such a distinct moody sound with very reflective instrumental parts.
I I love their truly haunting sound, haven’t heard anyone successfully try to replicate it which I think speaks to how complex and intricate it is. This album is a little long for my liking but I’ll give them a pass because they clearly have a lot of emotions to get out.
Nothing sounds like the cure. A bit long but nice moody album 4
I have never heard this in full before, despite knowing the highlights from their Mixed Up versions. I was really into The Cure at a young age (before this!) and the late '80s/early 90's stuff passed me by. Sounds fantastic as a whole, would probably have been into it in a big way at the time if I was paying attention!
Definitely long-winded, but the Cure here manage to avoid falling into feeling bloated and land squarely into a dreamy, moody hypnosis. I dig it. Great for these rainy days going on.
I mean, it's The Cure so it's WAY too dramatic for its own good. That said, this is a remarkably solid album for a) 1989 and b) The Cure. "Lovesong" and "Fascination Street" have both been covered so many times I'd forgotten that the original recordings are as good as they are. And they really are quite good. Overall, pleasantly surprised by how well this album has stood up over time.
A couple solid songs, the rest were middling.
Better than Coldplay
It was my first cure album but pretty much what I expected from them
There's a fine line between loveliness and tedium when you produce an album full of long, slow songs. The Cure mostly fall on the right side of that line on Disintegration.
I guess I’m used to hearing some of these songs in single form. I never realized the intro to Pictures of You was nearly 2 minutes before the vocals come in. I don’t dislike The Cure, they were part of the peripheral soundtrack of my youth, in that I never really engaged with their music, but knew it, heard it and it didn’t really move the needle for me in either a overly positive or negative way. If anything, their music was always just a little too morose and slow moving for me, but the hits were fine. Disintegration, as good as it is, doesn’t really change my mind much. This is a really long, slow moving album. I like the densely layered production - it’s a great sounding record and the guitars are very good, but I’m not a fan of music that kind of dwells on its own morbidity and just meanders along like some of these tracks do. I mean, of the last 5 songs, the shortest clocks in at 6:03 and those 5 songs account for almost 40 minutes of the album’s 72 minute run time. In the first half, I was going to rate this a 4, but by the end it’s just too long and repetitive in an uninteresting way for me to rank it that high - consider this a 3.5 out of 5.
Wow what a depressing album. I am not goth and I’m sad now. I can appreciate the dreamy ethereal nostalgic sadness but not my thing
The Cure were popular when I was in college. I never got into them. This album reminded me why. It's not awful, but really just boring. It could be a cure though, a cure for insomnia.
I had a very difficult time getting into this album. I thought it was cool conceptually, and I did find myself really enjoying the musicianship here. That's about as far as I go, however. The vocals weren't to my liking, and I found everything to be a little one-note. It was a chore for me to push through the album as, to put it simply, it just bored me.
Lame Christian rock
Not for me. Well crafted with many beautiful tones and textures, but not enough groove or memorable melodies for me. I understand the mass appeal of this album, but I am not part of its target audience.
Very dull.
I like the cure but this was a touch too whiny for my liking
Meh.
I was never depressed enough as a teenager to get into The Cure.
I feel like I should like this, but I don't. Some songs were pleasant, but mostly I was stressed out by how droning and drawn out everything was.
Instrumentals are rock solid, but Pouty White Guy is just not my genre.
No patience for the Cure. Who cares.
Eterno.
A record with basically no skips. An exceptional masterpiece that brings you a big breeze of joyful melancholy with the mellow and charming lyrics and voice from Robert Smith and the tight basslines from Simon Gallup. A Seminal piece in new-wave, post punk, and goth rock that everyone involved in goth subculture, from elders to babybats have craved and listened to. The kind of album you look for if you are looking for somethink dark but not gritty, sad but not grievous. It's romantic, nostalgic, special, and it will probably bring you a lot of memories while you listen to, whenever it's your first listen or the number 300th in a row. An anthology of songs that defined a whole subculture, and for many persons also a whole generation.
★★★★★★★
Stan: Goodbye Robert Smith! Kyle: Disintegration is the best album ever!
Great album experience. This feels like an album, something made to be listened to in one sitting, rather than a compilation of songs. The droning, layered instrumentals and Robert Smith’s sympathetic voice make the whole album have a bigger-than-life sound. Something I really enjoy, that I think is underrated in Disintegration, is how Smith uses a lot of words in his verses, it can be hard to have so much to say in one song, but I felt it’s impact throughout the album. Likewise, having extended band breaks that never felt empty made the album experience more mesmerizing. The drums too, hit so strongly, every beat is commandingly noticeable without overshadowing the song. I love the pedals and effects used throughout the album, especially the flanger and chorus. I had “tried” listening to this album multiple times in the past but this listen made every song sound so special. Each track felt necessary, which is unbelievable for me to say about an 1hr 12m album. Great album
I LOOOOVE THE CURE
I've been waiting 975 days for this album! Don't need to listen to it because I've heard it a million times, but I will listen to it on repeat for the rest of the day.🖤
Loved it . One for the buy on vinyl list .
Great album, really enjoyed it
I’m not quite to the level of Lyle Broflovskj, but this is a fantastic album. The Cure creates an ambiance of goth and dreamy pop with their musicianship. You’ll notice that Robert Smith’s lyrics are a little sparse compared to the instrumentals, yet they are just enough to accentuate the guitars, bass, and especially the keyboards. While there is a lot of gloom as you might expect, there’s hope with the final “Untitled” track and especially “Lovesong”. Song order on the album takes the listener on an emotional roller coaster, and the pairing of “Prayers for the Rain” followed by “The Same Deep Water as You” is inspired.
Resalto también "The Same Deep Water As You" y "Homesick". Portada 10/10.
Well, it's probably my favourite album ever. A masterpiece. What struck me on this listen was the quality of the production. It just sounds really rich and full.
Damn. Maybe Kyle from South Park was on to something when he called Disintegration the best album ever after all. I'm not a contrarian, okay? I know great music when I hear it, and Disintegration is probably one of the greatest albums ever made. Everything that the Cure had made up to this point was building towards this album's release and it was all so worth it. Robert Smith's voice and writing are as great as always. The album's sound takes the best elements of all of their previous works and combines them to make one of the best sounding albums of the decade. The songs are some of the best in the band's catalog. "Pictures of You" and "Lovesong" are two wonderfully sweet love songs I've ever heard. "Lullaby" is pretty creepy, but it's also kind of a bop at the same time. I really love the energy of "Fascination Street." The back-to-back string of "The Same Deep Water as You" and the title track somehow manage to be among the most captivating moments of the album despite being 9 and 8 minutes long respectively. I could keep going on and on if I wanted to. But I think what really makes Disintegration such a special album is in its overall atmosphere and tone. The album is dark, gloomy, and somber, but there are hints of hope and love sprinkled throughout the album that create this wonderful balance of emotions that just makes the album feel so... human. You're going to have moments in your life where you feel alone like on "Untitled," scared like on "Lullaby," and trapped like on "Prayers for Rain." But eventually, you'll find someone or something who makes you feel as happy as on "Lovesong," someone whose "Pictures of Them" just make you feel like live is worth living. There's a rather famous quote about how great art should "comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable." I don't personally feel that that is necessary for a piece of art to be great. There are plenty of great art pieces, albums included, that focus solely on one, the other, or even neither. But, if I were to use any one album to demonstrate how that philosophy can lead to excellent art, I would use Disintegration. There really is no other album that does what it does better than how Disintegration does it. It's just that good. 5/5.
This may be my favorite album of all time. The 1 and 2 star reviews here are interesting, though. I think that Cure stans--like hardcore, 5-star, greatest album ever fans--are those who were turned onto the band as a teenager. It really doesn't matter which "era" you were introduced to. I started in 1993 and Wish had just come out. But I was hooked, owned every album, and they were my favorite band within a year of hearing my first song. Adult friends of mine who I gush about the band have listened--especially to Disintegration--and they just don't get it in the same way. Something about that teenage brain and the themes and lyrics that Smith relates are just absolutely in-sync.
Amazing. Has it as a teen. Owned on CD.
i like this a lot it gets a little long, i probably couldve done without like Homesick, maybe, but i still like it a lot
They're definitely a band I just seem to forget about and never think of, but any time I hear them it's great. It's kinda dreamy and eery and unlike anything else. I love it. It's like if Radiohead was actually good.
One of my favorite kinds of albums is the synth-driven record that oscillates between musical abstraction and hooky hits. Songs from the Big Chair is the type specimen for me, but there's an alternate universe where I fell in love with Disintegration instead. The Cure were much more of a scene than Tears for Fears... a scene some people roll their eyes at. But it's irrelevant to me. I'm just happy to lose myself in an album that has "Pictures of You" on it but also tracks where I forget there is a singer in the group at all.
Nydelig.
I tend to put this record on when I’m home alone and drinking. It’s definitely an all timer for me.
I couldn't really here the lyrics clearly since I wasn't 100% focused only on the album, but I really liked the feeling I had while listening to it, so 5/5
Tip top
Yess the cure hits back
This album just floors me every time. On this listen the track ‘Disintegration’ hit me hard.
From the opening chords, this is an album I can get behind. This is definitely my favourite the cure album
Listen to it many times. One the best ever. Favorite track: Untitled.
Man what a classic album. I never really listened to The Cure much until I was like 30 but I feel like this album in particular hits a little differently when you are a little older. I can't imagine that was the demographic they were aiming at when they made this record. You listen to a song like Pictures of You and can see moody teens sobbing while listening in the dark in their bedrooms. But having grown out of being a moody teen long ago, I think I get something different out of it now. Maybe something healthier and more optimistic but sad at the same time? I don't know. Whatever it is, this record is absolutely legendary, probably the best release from The Cure, and I love it. Well deserving of 5/5.
Legendary.
It’s the Cure. The best goth, post-punk there is.
Great vibes, creates a fantastic space. Really cool to have this be the pick so close to Olivia Rodrigo's new album. That takes a lot of timbral and songwriting cues from this but loses a lot of the production that makes this really moody.
Clearly one I should have listened to before now. Really good.
Absolutely incredible record by an absolutely incredible band.
absolutely perfect in every way
Disintegration was the album that completely changed how I viewed both The Cure and 1980s music in general. Before hearing it, I knew The Cure mostly through their pop hits and their reputation as a goth band. Nothing prepared me for the overwhelming beauty of “Plainsong.” It’s one of the greatest album openers I’ve ever heard—lush, orchestral, massive, and emotionally crushing. The music feels grand and cinematic while Robert Smith’s lyrics explore sadness and longing in a way that feels deeply human rather than self-pitying. What makes Disintegration so remarkable is how perfectly it balances atmosphere, emotion, and songwriting. “Pictures of You” remains one of my favourite Cure songs, combining a memorable melody with the album’s moody emotional core. “Closedown” surprised me with how much I could hear its influence on later bands like blink-182, while “Lovesong” proves that even a straightforward love song can fit seamlessly into this melancholic world. Tracks like “Last Dance” and “Lullaby” hit from completely different angles—one heartbreaking and reflective, the other dark, claustrophobic, and nightmarish. The album’s centrepiece is its ability to sustain long songs without ever feeling bloated. “Fascination Street,” “Prayers for Rain,” “The Same Deep Water as You,” and the title track all stretch beyond conventional pop lengths, yet every minute feels earned. The layers of bass, guitars, synths, and drums create an emotional depth that rewards repeated listens. “Disintegration” itself is a masterpiece of repetition used as emotional escalation, capturing the feeling of replaying regrets in your mind until they become overwhelming. By the time “Homesick” and “Untitled” arrive, the album feels like it has journeyed through darkness and emerged into something hopeful. It doesn’t erase the pain that came before it, but it finds light at the end of the tunnel. That ending is what makes the album so endlessly replayable. This is my favourite Cure album and one I return to several times every year. It’s haunting and beautiful, emotionally layered and textured, filled with lyrics and compositions that reveal something new with every listen. It’s also an album I can’t wait to own on vinyl and someday share with my daughter. Few records feel this deeply human. For me, Disintegration isn’t just The Cure’s masterpiece—it’s one of the greatest albums ever made. 9.7/10
Overraskende bra
Really great album, strong creative songs
i hope pornography (the album) shows up too
LOVE LOVE LOVE
This came on a gloomy, rainy day which was perfect for listening to this stunning album
Incredible album, one of my few top 10s, phenomenally written, emotional, and just a beautiful piece of work from The Cure

The Cure will ALWAYS do it for me. This is such a good album (dreamy *and* sexy at times??????) it makes me want to THROW UP!!!!! Fav: Prayers for Rain, Fascination Street
Incredible
This is already an album I really enjoy listening to. I made a point to listen to it on a recent road trip. I was extremely excited to see it on this list! Still five stars!
I dig this album so much. The synths and Roberts voice are so good. The intro to Plainsong is so cinematic. At 72 minutes, the album does not wear on me.
Once again it's like the generator is reading my mind because I've been listening to this album recently again after a long break. What can I say, it just really is a good album. So many bangers and epic sounding songs, it'd be hard to choose favourites 5/5
The Cure’s albums tend to lean toward either murky, atmospheric, and moody albums (Faith, Pornography) or well-crafted, catchy, and more upbeat pop (The Head On The Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me). Of course, all of those albums contain hints of both sides of the band, but the overall feel of a Cure album is always one or the other. Disintegration blends those two extremes into a more cohesive whole than any other album. Not only The Cure’s best, but one of the best rock albums of the decade.
This time listening Untitled gained a new place in my heart
Think I needed to listen to this anyway x it’s beautiful.
Superb.
This albums perfectly encapsulates melancholy - a deep sadness with a profound sense of beauty. It's brooding and terribly atmospheric, and features many of the poppy elements that The Cure began to incorporate after the Dark Trilogy. A masterpiece and the quintessential Cure album. Favourite track: Disintegration 4.5/5
one of the best goth rock albums and definetly a staple in the cures discography 10/10 Favourite: Pictures of You Least Favourite: None
Not a bad track
oh wow! first time using this web and i already found a great song. interesting. the intro is pretty long haha, i love this kind of music! thankss
The most FIVE 5 ever
Could spend forever in this album. Probably their best one, at the end of the day.
It’s a 5! One of the greats. Top 50/ top 20 album of all time (such a list is hard to actually conceive.) Yeah. It just gets better with time and repeated listening. 5 Boolean: TRUE
I disliked The Cure in the past because I wanted to associate the 80s with a certain upbeat synthpop sound. But now, I am deeply grateful for The Cure. The tracks meld together seemlessly, the bass and synths that lay the groundwork for gentle piano sounds and explosive drums, especially in something like "Prayer for Rain" reveal how there is something so beautiful in music that sounds so gloomy. I also appreciate Robert Smith's vocals and lyrics where he is sounds like he is about to cry but also very confident in what he's expressing.
So sad, so beautiful.
The instrumentation and sound design are insanely good. Today’s listening experience felt out of place since it’s a beautiful sunny day and I’m driving through the city. However, the first time I listened through the album, it was 11pm, I was home alone, a little heartbroken and a little ethereal. The experience was magical.
An absolute masterpiece. My favourites are Plainsong and Untitled and Pictures of You and Disintegration (title track) and Closedown. The album as a whole is truly an experience. I have listened through this album many many times…
The year is 1989, you are about to turn 16 years old. You hate your high school and most of the students that go there. You're ready to just graduate and move away. The girl you've been chasing for 6 months has agreed to go on date and then this album drops. You spend the summer cruising around town while this plays on repeat. Almost 40 years later she's still by your side, anything less than a 5 would be disrespectful to the impact this album had on me as a teenager. It still bangs today.
great find, surprising that this is from the 1980s. hasn't aged one bit, still sounds modern Favorite track: pictures of you other picks: lullaby, love song
Amazing album
Robert Smith at the peak of his powers. This is a great fucking album.
One of my all time favorites. Perfect.
I’m usually against albums being over an hour long as they often have boring filler, but this one actually uses that time effectively. Not a weak moment on this album. This is one of their finest works. Cohesive, elegant, sometimes romantic, sometimes dark.
THIS!!! THIS IS IT!!! This is what I have been waiting for this whole project. Not that I knew it was coming - I was just waiting for the one album that would inevitably be my absolute favorite album. It is 80s perfection, making me nostalgic for a time I wasn't even around for. It brings me a special kind of joy AND melancholia. I wish I knew how to properly explain the experience I had while listening to it. I believe I will be relistening again and again, long into the future. 10/10
Pictures of you, Homesick
Good rainy day album. Only familiar with primarily the chart hits of the cure, this was an enjoyable listen.
A solid 9/10. This is an absolute masterpiece. Dark, emotional, atmospheric, and beautifully heavy without needing to be loud. Not just a great album from The Cure—one of those records that feels essential.
Interesting to me when this album came out I was 13 and by all accounts it should have been my forever favorite. But I was already in love with the long dead Ian Curtis and Robert Smith had nothing on him. Just as I rejected New Order out of hand for not being Joy Division enough, I rejected The Cure for not being… enough. Years on and late to the party though I may be, I am glad to finally have arrived. I think this album is brilliant. It’s atmospherics, it’s foreshadowing. It has hits AND it’s well composed. I gave 17 Seconds a 5. I don’t think I had ever heard it before this exercise. But it is also surprising well composed. Smith really knows his stuff. This album… well I knew I would give it a 5 before hearing it again. But it really deserves higher than that. It’s definitely in my top 50 albums of all time. 5 Boolean: yes, absolutely, and hopefully a good number more times before I die
10/10
A true classic
10 / 10
Flawless. Painfully beautiful and melodic, there's not been an album quite like it since.
must be the most sampled album of all time. I've recognized so many melodies and it was my first listening
How wrong I was. !!!! 5.0 !!!!
10/10 - this album hits all the marks for me.
I've been meaning to give The Cure a proper listen at some point and WOW I'm glad I finally did.
I always liked this album. The sound is really big but still vulnerable to convey the emotion. It always feels like it is slowing down which makes you give into it to enjoy it. I think you could listen to this on sad and on happy days. That, I believe, shows great depth.
One of the most perfectly curated atmospheres of any album I’ve listened to. You know you’re down bad when an album like this gives you some calm within the storm when everything around you is falling apart. In theory this should make me feel sad, yet I find comfort in the loneliness here. The vocal delivery by Robert Smith is on point all throughout. Lullaby continues to be on of my favorite cure songs ever.
Plainsong begins even before you hear it and swells into a beautiful chorus introducing you to the world of the cure. It’s murky, it’s dark, a rat just ran over your foot. It’s raining. The cure have brought you to their place and you must feel exactly where you are. The lyrics rush past you and you can feel the melancholy of the music and the hopefulness and despair and longing. Now we move onto Pictures of you, with a chime and iconic guitar riff that is so easy to play I love it. Anyways it’s simple yet so so meaningful it’s a battle for the love you had. One guitar says one thing and the other deep chord says another until you hear that CLASH. Where everything is and you are teleported out of your mind and into the memories you made with the person Robert Smith is singing about. I still have pictures of people that I will never talk to again and I look at them as moments and I look at you and I look at myself and I just see how different I am. “Remembering you and how you used to be” is what Robert wrote. That is talent subtext is insane. The guitar comes back at the end to simulating to me letting go and giving into not the love you been singing of but love for yourself. THERE IS NOTHING IN THE WORLD THAT I EVER WANTED THAN TO FEEL YOU DEEP IN MY HEART He is saying I loved you as much as I could. He is pleading with it and then he says there is nothing in the world that I ever wanted more than to never feel the breaking apart my pictures of you he is legitimately saying I never wanted to let go but I have to in order to love myself wow. Closedown-A full drum down a waterfall down the angels into the truth about not having what you want you slow down and you question yourself why am I like if only I could find the lust for life again and I have felt that and I feel the lust for life again. Lovesong- Falling in love makes everything better is what I am learning. To be continued
Best album we’ve listened to so far
So good
Absolutely outstanding. Their magnum opus.
Favourite tracks: Pictures of You, Fascination Street and Lovesong
Instant 6 Outta 5
The best album by one of the greatest bands.
A dreamy album with a lot of beautiful instrumental parts, really love this one ! (I think lovesong is in my top 3 of this album)
it probably is still their best overall album, though their newest one, _songs of a lost world_, is amazingly good. while the whole thing is a legit masterpiece, i loveLOVE "last dance". sheer gloomy pop perfection
Love the cure, love this album (yes i saw them live once hehe)
Just a joy to to listen to (ironically). Seriously absorbing and influential.
The perfect rainy day album. Seriously. Put this album on when it's raining and you can't go wrong. The Cure's best album, and a great record overall. This where they perfected arena rock for misfits. And misfits is not a put down. Back when this came out, you were considered weird if you were into the Cure or any other alternative music. But when people started to actually listen to it, they recognized how great this band actually is. Go back in time to 1989/90. I was just discovering The Cure as a senior in high school. This album was such a revelation. The music that finds us at this age has an incredible pull on us. I put this on and instantly I am driving around with my friends, worried about going away to college, and the girl I am too anxious to ask out. Robert Smith's music and lyrics catch me in a warm hug.
Bäst är Plain song, Pictures of you, Lovesong, Lullaby, Prayers for rain
Amo!
so so so unbelievably fire
I like The Cure, but I absolutely adore this album. Maybe it just hit at the right time, but it felt like it enveloped me in a musical cocoon, the way the emotions bled so freely from the songs.
The best Cure album
4.5 stars This album is a whole mood. It brings me back to high school… when the album was almost 20 years old but I got into the Cure because of a girl I liked and listened to this record a lot. The first half is pretty, brooding, and has the singles that are all excellent. The middle bit has longer jams with dark electronic screechy stuff throughout but really prolongs the mood. Then the title track blasts in with a shattering sound and really drives it all home with the best vocal performance of Robert Smith’s career. Is the album overlong? Maybe a little. But do I forgive it because it’s consistent and keeps the mood going? You bet I do. I’ll acknowledge it’s not perfect and not for everyone, but damn do I love this album!
Boss. 8/10
Epic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brilliant!
An album that has stayed with me ever since I first heard it over half of my lifetime ago. Every song here feels essential, every lyric here feels like time was taken to make sure that every word was put in its right place, every note here is played at the right time and is the right note to be played. What I'm saying here is that this is a perfect record. Yes, some of the singles here are insanely popular on their own, but this is an album where every song is best heard in the context of the album. It's generally agreed that this is the best album by The Cure, and this time the masses are correct.
The best Cure album, which in my mind puts it up there as one of the best albums. Dense melancholia, sublime.
Amazing
I'm loving the sounds. Some regret that it wasn't as easy for me to hear whole albums for years, but I remember the radio hits. This is the first album I'm hearing on this project and it's definitely one I'm glad to hear top to bottom. Saved to library.
Love The Cure
absolute perfektion.
This is what orchestral manoeuvres in the dark actually sound like. This is gloomy and claustrophobic shoegaze at its finest.
Great record from tip to tail.
already heard it some times before, amazing album
The Cure's best hands down. It has the stark and moody atmosphere of their first few albums but with the songwriting finesse of their more pop-centric releases that immediately preceded this. Robert Smith reportedly wanted to make a classic album before the age of 30, and as the deadline neared he got to work and succeeded spectacularly. Between the more concise and accessible moments like "Lovesong" or "Lullaby" and the extended Gothic mood pieces like "The Same Deep Water as You" or the title track, the band delivers a perfect mix of everything that makes them great. Key tracks: Plainsong Pictures of You Closedown Lovesong Lullaby Disintegration
Love dolly, but not my thing
Nothing to say that hasn't been said. Undeniable masterpiece from a classic band.
Fantastisches Album.
This is a very musically sound album, the chords flow wonderfully and the lyrics fit the ambience. This seems like a very relatable album. These instrumentals are amazing especially on closedown. The Hits in Lullaby and the strings I feel help emphasize its meaning. The Same Deep Water might actually be a masterpiece tbh. 9.7/10
I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. The 1st 30 seconds are life changing 10/5 I'm seeing them in Belfast in June🔥
Prayers for rain, otroligt snygga gitarrer.
A truly genuine masterpiece. A band at their absolute creative peak making their most important and influential record. I wouldn't even need to listen to this to give it a 5 but as I come towards the end of the list, is this my last 5*? Pictures of You is an epic, lullaby, lovesong, amazing singles But for me its the title track. Outstanding Its just such a beautiful album. The guitar work is some of the best guitar work of the decade, its never showy its just all about melody. The relationship between the piano and guitars seems so locked in at all times and everything is layered perfectly
Favorite Track: Fascination Street
i loved it. the musicality in this is stunning. definitely saving this one
This is an artist firing on all cylinders. Every note fits together like a puzzle piece, creating something beautiful.
One word - atmosphere. It's the main selling point mf the album and is completely inimitable. It's just absolute perfection the way the guitars feel so crushing but at the same time ethereal. You get lost in this deep melancholy and never want to escape. Multiple songs on here are so crushing emotionally that they almost bring tears to my eyes. All of the other elements are also absolutely excellent - the basslines, the vocals, the lyrics. Everything comes together with a power of a thousand storms breaking at once. This record feels like standing outside in the middle of a rainy night, but being too depressed to go anywhere. And that's why I love it so much.
# Album Name: Disintegration # Artist: The Cure # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: Great album. Dark, dense but oddly satisfying. Some great singles on this album. # Top Tunes: Plain song / pictures of you / last dance / pictures of you / # Would I listen to it again? Yes
A classic.
I am a huge The Cure fan and this is my favourite album. So no brainer 5 stars and yes I want to listen to it before I die.
The Cure, one of the greatest rock acts ever and a personal favorite of mine. Disintegration was already an album I loved and that remains true no matter how many times I spin it. One of the best records to ever release, every single note is perfectly placed for the moody atmosphere. Some the best writing on any album here from Robert. A near perfect album and an easy 5 for me.
now six in a row i own and another album that absolutely deserves the list. The Cure, the godfathers of Emo. this is such a great album. dreamy at points, dark in others......great songs like "pictures of you", "love song" (probably considered their best song), "lullaby", "Fascination Street". again, i probably could sing line by line every song on the album.
When this came out I had it on heavy rotation for months. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me may still be my fave Cure release but this would be a close second. And one of my favorite albums period.
I love, love, love this album. Plainsong and Pictures of You are possibly the two greatest opening tracks on any album ever. In high school, I was caught up in skate punk and thrash and couldn't really understand the music my gothy friends liked (I know, immature). But then this album came out and someone put it on when we were driving around one night late in my junior year and, BAM, it was like someone turned a switch. I finally got what folks were seeing in the Cure, Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc. But, even without the hormonal revelations of high school, this album is just so great.
5/5 - The ultimate rainy day album. It's a masterpiece. The opening chimes of Plainsong and then that beginning 20 seconds later gets me every time. I'd hardly change a thing on this album, and I certainly wouldn't touch the bass on Fascination Street because it's A+.
Amazing album.
I haven't delved very deep, but every single thing I've heard by The Cure so far has been great. However, I wouldn't be surprised if this was "objectively" their best album (probably no such thing as objectivity with something like this, though).
Disintegration is the perfect name. Listen and just fade away
This Album depresses me.. ich feels like an old relationship.. it's perfect. But I kinda hate it for that. Fav song: Picture of you, Love Song , fascination street, Disintegration
ONE OF MY FAVE ALBUMS OMFG I HAVE THE CD IN MY COLLECTION I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT
Hermoso album
A late 80s masterpiece. Finally glad that I got around to listening to this finally, even if it felt long to listen to in a single sitting and I had to listen in chunks. I just love how long these songs are stretched out and how beautiful it all is. Pictures of You is one of the most beautiful songs ever written also.
This album sets a moody tone right out of the gate and sticks to it perfectly. The production is clean, and every track delivers. There are clear standouts, like“Pictures of You,” “Lovesong,” and my personal favorite “Lullaby. A great album from start to finish.
zajebiste chociaz troche smetne
Me gusta mucho, nunca había escuchado The Cure. Tremendo álbum
Vibes
The album that did temporarily mark their disintegration. The high, or perhaps low, point of the Cure. A classic
The pictures are all I can feel... My love for this album grows every listen. A perfect listen from a very cool band.
This was my first concert at 13. August 1989 at the CNE. Amazing show with three encores. The songs can run a little long but it’s a great album.
Likes: lush synth arrangements; droning instrumentals that some work; desolate, moving lyrics; gothrock aesthetic Dislikes: very little; if I’m nitpicking it’s a little long in some songs. But given the songs where the brooding length works well, its hard to complain Overall, it’s very difficult to be objective with this album. It means a lot to me, has gotten me through some very tough times, and is an easy 5.
One of my fav albums to listen to- perfect intro (for me) to goth/alt rock- formative for many of my favorite modern bands as well. This is a no skips album- and a classic for everyone. A MUST listen to
this is freaking good! love: lullaby, fascination street, plainsong
the drama on this album is unbeatable
Wonderfully moody and full. Usually I'm not much of a fan of synths in these contexts but here they add such a great atmosphere that ties everything together so well. Of course there's also plenty of catchy guitar and bass lines to keep the energy up. All in all it makes for a gloominess that's more melodramatic and melancholy than just depressing Fav tracks: Disintegration, Plainsong, Fascination Street
If pop music got very depressed in the eighties, wore eyeliner and started dating gothic rock, this would be the sound. (And I'm wondering why not all pop music can be drenched in the same gloomy, depressive atmosphere as this.) 'Disintegration' is a masterpiece.
Friday I'm in Love was such a great feel-good pop song, I always loved it but had no further interest in The Cure. Last year I walk into a record store and find the owner is an old friend. I ask for recommendations on new music. One is The Cure's 2024 album - "Are you kidding?" "LISTEN to it!" he sez. And I love it. Turns out it sounds a lot like Disintegration, except where in 2024 he's singing about despair for the end of the world, in 1989 he was singing about despair for the end of himself. Huge anthemic sweeping synth and guitar, singer with the carbon copy 80's plaintive belt singing style I get so tired of, and yet somehow to me he's an original. I don't know anything about Robert Smith, the band, or their bios, whether the despair is real or a good shtick, the words say misery but the music says joy, melancholic but hedonistic aching. If this is him I get how the band got its name.
As good as it gets. All time top 5
It’s crazy how fresh and modern and 37 year old album still sounds. I liked this more than I honestly thought I would. I knew the radio hits but all the songs are good
I’m sure some people probably hate how long and drawn out a lot of the songs are, but the atmosphere is exactly what makes me love this album. Almost feels like I lose track of how far into the album I am, but also don’t really care.
Perfect album. The Cure goated
One of the best albums of all time. It’s lush, it’s emotional and it’s poignant.
brb gotta go tell liz toner i gave it a 5 so she can sleep tonight.
Даже удивительно, что при всей моей любви к Not in Love от Crystal Castles в свое время не пошла дальше слушать The Cure. Одним словом, если раньше путала The Smiths, The Cure и Joy Division, надеюсь, что этот альбом точно отличу
Oh yeah! Definitely belongs on the list. Pure emotion from the the alternative gods!
ti amo bobert
I feel disintegrated in the best possible way after listening to this album. Spooky, dreamy and sexy all at the same time.
Don’t think I’ve ever listened to this album all the way through - just great!
It's the Cure. Robert Smiths vocals, guitar riffs, keyboard. Some songs are moodier than others. Good album. It's better to be in a relaxed, unhurried state and listen to the album as a whole.
Moody. Cinematic. 10/10.
Absolutely beautiful! Melancholy perfection!
Loved this. The Cure were better at being U2 than U2 were.
incredible.
I love Robert Smith’s choices in guitar tones.
It was great
This is one of my favorite albums of all time and forever. Disintegration, the song, is one of my top 10 songs ever.
A stone cold classic.
crazy about this.
Definitely a classic album and one of the better from it's time I feel. Enjoyed it as much now as I did back then. :)
Not my favorite of theirs, but can we even complain?
Best album till now
It's The Cure's second-best album after Pornography. It's of course all around brilliant, essential all around. You all know if you should listen to it or not. That's all I got today.
The Cure is a top 20 artist for me and this is Exhibit A (2024's Songs of a Lost World might be Exhibit B and should eventually make its way onto this list). Plainsong-Pictures of You are up there with the greatest 1-2 punches in rock album history.
It's inexplicable that I only started listening to The Cure in the last fiveish years. Everything about this album is extraordinary, and nearly every single track is a hit, as far as I'm concerned. I've listened to this on repeat for several years now and haven't tired of it. What really got me, though, about this band was their performance at Riot Fest a few years back. Robert Smith has been doing this a long time, but he was operating at 100%. Sounded as great as ever and still doing us all a favor and putting on that makeup even after all these years. I hope they stick around for a long time.
My most anticipated album of 1989. I was a massive Cure fan, so I couldn't wait for this to come out. While I loved it, I found it to be a bit of a slog toward the end. I still think it's overlong, but it's also full of some of their best work.
The greatest goth record of them all. Incomparably melancholic, lush and indwelling.
So good. It felt dreamlike at times. Gave some smiths vibes too.
One of my favourite albums of all time. Although if I’m listening to The Cure these days, it’s usually Wish era b-sides or In Orange or Pornography. In some respects it’s the first album I knew was Important and that I was obligated to like. I came to Disintegration just at the end of its promo push, so it was still very much alive in the culture, but also a bit distant because this was the MTV era and your only hopes of seeing a video and such was 120 Minutes or someone’s VHS recordings. I, otoh, was huge into Mixed Up, my first real Cure “album.” So the more sombre moments here felt even austere in a way compared to the uptempo/dance remix of that collection. To this day I still have less time for Prayers for Rain, Deep Water, and Homesick, but I can’t imagine the album without them.
lullaby prettiest song on earth
With Disintegration, the Cure invites you to put your headphones on and immerse yourself in their ethereal, sonic world. It's parts sensual, melancholic, and sublime. Plainsong sets this mood so well, but I always go back to Untitled and Lullaby because the production for these songs is so hypnotic. This should've been the sound for TTPD to be honest... (4.5-5)
10/10 08.03.2026
Had a bit more familiar territory than the last Cure album I heard (Pictures of You and Lovesong were there) and was just as excellent. They really have that dark mood down pat
B A N G E R from one of my favorite bands
This is the best Cure album I've heard so far. It's one of the best albums I've heard so far by any artist. It seems more broody and atmospheric than the dark depression on Pornography. Which makes it easier to listen to if you aren't depressed.
The album is full of love, and I'm totally in love with it
Simply brilliant and every bit as melancholic as I anticipated.
5/5
slay
Amazing record.
Done
Album #46: Disintegration - The Cure Genre (W): Gothic rock, dream pop, post-punk, alternative rock Singles: Lullaby, Fascination Street, Lovesong, Pictures of You I have listened to this album once before. Thoughts: This album is so beautiful to listen to. I love the keyboards and how dark the music is, truly one of the best gothic albums ever made! Plainsong is a magnificent intro, and Lovesong is one of the greatest love songs ever written! Favorite songs: All of it!!
One of the best albums of all time
I love this album. I had never heard it before, and I liked it instantly. It's only gotten better the more I'm listening to it. It's dreamy, dark, romantic (goth/ic?). I guess it just has it's own atmosphere that it lives in and you can pop it on when you want to be in that atmosphere and that's what I love about it. Great songs, great ideas, it's one of my favorite albums so far. 5/5
I have 34 "liked" songs by The Cure on Spotify - including every song on this album. So this one is already on my perfect album list. In the early part of The Cure's career I was only peripherally aware of them and some of the songs by them that had broken through to my awareness I didn't really like that much - with "poppy" songs such as "The Love Cats". I will admit I was also not interested in their "look" and their videos that I saw turned me off. Once I just sat and listened to them and forgot about their video image it was much better. Side note - this is one thing I don't like about music videos - they distract you from actually just listening. I think my gateway to the Cure was the compilation album called "Staring at the Sea". I can't even remember what caused me to get that one - but once I did I started really liking most of those songs - especially the early songs such as "Killing An Arab", "A Forest", and "Primary". And I was thinking "hey these guys are pretty good, I should check out their other stuff". And then after this album came out with songs like "Pictures of You" - with the long instrumental section - I started liking them even more. This album has 8 of 12 songs that are over 5 minutes long and all have a sort of hypnotic effect - starting with the first song "Plainsong" which starts with over 2.5 minutes of lush music before the lyrics kick in and really sets the mood for the album. The last 4 songs on the album (which look like the least popular on Spotify, except for "Disintegration") are actually all really good. They are also all very long (from 6.5 to 9.5 minutes) so they stretch out establishing a definite mood. The poppiest song on this album "Lovesong" is still actually very good and fits with the album. Most of the songs don't follow the typical verse/chorus/verse standard of pop music - which makes them more interesting. This album could be nearly as good even without words since the music grabs you so much. I just noticed they have various instrumental versions of most of these on the "Deluxe Edition" on Spotify - so I may have to check those out. Listen to this album 3 times in a row and see how it pulls you in. Good stuff! Liked songs on Spotify: 12/12 (Perfect Album) Rating: 5/5
Good, sad
Brilliant. First time listening to this album and already in love.
El mejor álbum The Cure.
An absolutely stunning album
Hook club pick. Love all the super long songs and long intros before vocals
A legendary pull imo, really appreciated the chance to dig into this album further than "Pictures of You" and "Lovesong", both of which I've loved for a long time I love the way they build their songs on this, often taking minutes before any vocals come in, but in the meantime creating wistful moody soundscapes that draw you in with their repetition, but allowing for some quite catchy melodies throughout. Second half doesn't leave much to cling to by comparison, but not to the point where I'm unwilling to 5* this
Had pretty high expectations for this going in as it was quite high on my backlog and I had heard a few people hyping it up. Didn’t disappoint at all, a lot of the songs sound really similar but not in a bad way more that it just flows really well together 5
enjoyed this a lot i loved the dreamy feel and absolutely loved fascination street
I think i'm becoming a Cure fan....this album was their return to the gothic style of music that they made before becoming pop sensations in the 80's, and I prefer it. Their pop hits were great, but I could listen to this version of them a lot more, and their pop hits just kinda blend in with "80's music." I like the tracks that aren't super vocal heavy as that's kind of my preference anyway, but I like that they went back to the unique "gothic sound". I mean, it's basically pop goth, but still. I'm not a super fan of emo, but it's basically emo, 15 years before emo.
Fantastic
Today I learned that Robert Smith has been married for 36 years.
Album 107. Disintegration (https://open.spotify.com/album/6DZNOsLXIU2zOQfQDwDpIS?si=uwq_EsD6Tqmr98wsTUrGzA) — The Cure (1989) First thought — why does this album cover have so familiar vibes to Mulholland Drive movie, omg. Surrealism is everywhere. When I opened the tracklist, I got it — it will be a great and tough listen today. I know a lot of songs and have them in my playlist. Not tough because I've listened to some songs, but because I know what kind of songs they are. It’s a masterpiece. Dark, heavy, claustrophobic, goth album, killing atmosphere. The album is a long trance into ethereal sounds, the beauty of music and melancholy. This album is so painful and deeply itchy. That’s the kind of album that makes it hard to breathe. It’s so good, that I can’t listen to it. It’s too hard. It’s pure experience, absolute beauty. 5/5 Liked songs: — Pictures Of You — Closedown — Lovesong — Lullaby — Fascination Street — Disintegration — Untitled
Nice
The Cure's magnum opus. This album is a masterpiece. It announces its grandeur from the opening notes. Plainsong is a sweeping, elegiac symphony of sound. Robert Smith's vocals and lyrics are at the achingly and most profound height of his prowess. There isn't a song on this album that isn't great. Any bow to indulging in creating a pop song was dismissed. There were popular hits in Lullaby and Lovesong to be certain, but they weren't crafted as pop songs, and they aren't compositionally. Which is what one can say about this album. It was composed. It is symphonic and orchestral in the resplendent hues of its gothic magnificence. An absolute triumph. Definitely among my picks for greatest albums of all time.
Stunning
When did goth music get the reputation for being overly dark and scary. The best of the genre was always the stuff you could dance to. Maybe you avoid eye contact with everyone and stare at the ground but that's fine. It's want makes The Cure such a great band, even now. It's about more than just depression. There's a longing to feel something more but an extreme discomfort in expressing happiness. So when The Cure flirted with pop singles and sold out stadiums worldwide, Robert Smith knew that something wasn't right. Returning to moody roots, the band composed "Disintegration", probably their best album. It's beautiful and anchored in what made the band great, but it's balanced out by some strong and highly accessible singles. "Lovesong" even manages to be a genuine love song as the title implies. It's growth in baby steps but it's sincere and it's perfectly produced. There's no bad track here.
10/10 all time great album
Classic Cure album. With Pictures Of You, Lovesong, Fascination Street and Lullaby. Fantastic!!
This is widely considered the best Cure record, though I was always partial to its predecessor Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me for sentimental reasons. For a long time I kinda didn't love this record, obviously a lot of classic tracks but on the whole I found it to be a bit too much of the same color. In retrospect, I was wildly wrong. This is their best album and there isn't a weak or even mediocre track. This is their best album, the pinnacle of Robert’s songwriting and great performances start to finish
hooray an album that i don't have to listen to in private session. also Lullaby is one of my favorite songs ever
One of my top 10 albums of all time. 12 incredible songs. Each 5 stars individually. Put together as an album elevates it to something else entirely.
Best of far 2026
Great songs on this album. Plainsong is among my favorite songs, probably.
6/5, likely my favourite.
One of the best
Rating: 10/10 Not a bad middle of the winter album but really serves best as one for autumn or spring on a dreary, rainy day. One immediate thing I feel about Disintegration is that it evokes so many bittersweet emotions, as it can be romantic, loving, longing, melancholic, lonely, cold and sad throughout. It’s not just a depressing album. One thing that’s actually awesome is Robert writing Lovesong for his fiancé/wife who he is still with 4 decades later and will die with. The beautiful, lush, dreamy and rainy atmosphere this album creates is pretty much unmatched. It’s pretty long, yes, but it really takes its time in establishing this tone and then building it up, which works nicely when the first part of the album is filled with some really melodic poppier moments, and then the latter half has these sprawling tracks filled with amazing bassy grooves. Lullaby, Fascination Street, Prayers for Rain, Disintegration, Untitled are just flawless and keep continuing to bask in unmatched atmosphere. The band really capped off the 1980’s by releasing the pinnacle of Gothic Rock paving the way to a dream pop future, and it’s easily a front running contender for the best album of the decade. It is to me. It’s not my favorite album of all time but it’s definitely top 5.
10/10 already love this album
Masterpiece and one of the most moving albums of all times.
I really like the Cure so I have no justification for not listening to more of their full albums. They have such a unique sound, there's a lot going on in every song but it's balanced so well against the lyrics. Teen me was right for being really into them.
𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 feels less like a collection of songs and more like an entire emotional climate. The Cure stretch everything — melody, texture, time itself — until the music becomes a glowing, slow-motion world you can fall into. What I hear here isn’t really goth rock; it’s unmistakably dream pop, built from vast synth beds, drifting guitar lines, and that weightless sense of melancholy only The Cure seem able to summon. The album moves with a kind of tragic grace, each track deepening the mood rather than breaking it. It’s one of the most fully realized visions of the 80s, and a record that earns its reputation the moment you sink into it.
oh shit!! This is an amazing album. I think I've listened to it once all the way through. This is just what I needed this afternoon. It's been a hectic meeting full day and these mellow vibes are hitting just right.
Love this with my whole heart. Some of the most iconic sounds. Encapsulates total heartbreak. No other album with similar themes even comes close.
beautiful amazing goof fabulous bodacious
I can think of few albums that take me away like this one can. I bought this record a few years ago and was so thrilled to pull it out again. I get so lost in the deep sounds of this album I forget to turn the record over. Robert Smith is incredible!
