Reviews (page 11 of 13)

The theoretical hybrid of Ed Hardy and Hot Topic

These guys were really working through some stuff with this album. Very emotional. Not for me at all though, even with the nostalgia.

Too over-produced to take seriously. A few catch tunes, though.

This album takes me back to my angsty youth. So many of these songs were played non-stop on the radio. Personally, I am not a fan of the oscillation between screaming and talk/rapping. I used to love this music- now it is too depressing.

Too much angry teenage angst for my taste

Zu laut für mich.

Yeah, never my thing. Too angry. 2.

Bought the CD when this came out. Was massive back then. Telling that I haven't bothered to listen to it in decades. And revisiting it now, I can see why. It was a musical cul-de-sac....best left forgotten. 2

I enjoyed a few of the songs although it's not my main kind of music, but I felt a lot of the songs were too similar.

Music for angsty teenagers.

I didn't get into linkin park when I was 15 I'm not about to start now

While I’m 100% here for all the fun 90s/2000s nostalgia - this album reminded me how insufferably angsty my generation was.

Does not belong on the list. Like, look… It’s not horrible but not for me. And I can’t imagine there’s not something else that deserves this spot.

I was struck with how sterile and filled with impotent, adolescent rage this is. I’m not saying that a band needs to use profanity to be good, but this gives this the sense of this being watered down “metal” for babies. It’s otherwise fine, but never threatens to become actually good. I don’t think it deserves a 3. Doesn’t deserve a 1.

This was pretty meh for me, I was never a fan of Linkin Park when they came out, an overall 2 for me.

Not my thing!

I’d heard the singles before, but never the whole album. In the End is unsurprisingly the best thing on this album. So much of this sounds like a petulant teenage tantrum, with rapping that wouldn’t be out of place on a Lonely Island parody.

46/1001 I loved One step closer back in the day of Napster and LimeWire. I skimmed the rest and nothing was near as good as that one song. Listening now, I should have given it more of a chance. It sounds good but just not my jam these days. 4/10

Started listening. I clocked out of rock during the 90’s. Too angry for me. Very significant sound though. If I could give it 2.5 stars I would because of the impact it had.

It’s too bad that Chester had such cringe lyrics when he was a captivating singer, but if I could only rhyme “heal” with “real” I’d probably pull a Chester too

da ragazzino l'avrò sentito duecento volte.. adesso lo ascolto diversamente, ma non posso ascoltarlo da zero

God nu metal is just so meh. All I got out of this album is shitty rapping over metal guitars saying how sad and insane they are. Why would u go out your way to listen to this trash. In the End is the only good song off of this tbh. The only thing worst I could imagine is limp bizkit. Only a 4.4/10 2.2/10

I honestly thought I would like this more. It was pretty bad, especially the second track where he screams “shut up when I’m talking to you” - had to skip that one.

Two albums I owned as a kid in a row! One a revered classic, and then there’s this pile of shit. In my defense, it was hard to avoid some clunkers as a teenage boy who liked music in the early 00s. I had forgotten about the instrumental track, though, and I think that’s okay.

I respect the love for Hybdrid Theory. I just can’t fuckin get into it man. I couldn’t even when I was hormonally primed to love this shit. Couldn’t even make it through a full listen. The emotionality is so cheesy it’s like musical theater for emo kids. I’m sorry guys.

Not a fan

Probably the most polished commercially designed smoothed over and predigested album of nu metal. All the parts are there: down tuned riffs, bad raps, dj scratching, big shouty hooks, vaguely directed anger at liars and 'you' - but the aggression is dialed back and reigned in, made safe for the teenage suburban bedrooms where this ire is most strongly felt. One of the strangest parts of aging is seeing the shitty radio bands of your youth become beloved legacy acts. I thought this was just disposable fake metal for tasteless morons and that once or went away once we were done for good. But as LP themselves say 'nothing seems to go away' and we're stuck with this juvenile - but not in a fun way - bullshit for ever. I do love using the phrase 'everything you say to me takes me one step to the edge and I'm about to break' in casual conversation though, so thanks for that.

i’m not a 13-year-old boy in the early aughts with no access to music or media except for his older brother’s CD collection, so obviously i don’t like this nor can i even consider taking it seriously. it’s not good but it’s also not unlistenable. catchy enough and not abjectly disgusting the way so much nu metal tends to be…

Slick production big sound...not for me

Definitely cooler when you’re a high school freshman

*Slavoj Zizek voice* The problem with being an innovator…in anything trendy…is that your sound can often be so defining that revisiting it decades later can often make it feel like parody.

I love the single “In the End” so I had high hopes for this one. Sadly, in the end I will only be giving it two stars. Too industrial for my ears.

Not for 34 year old me but 13 year old me loved the Dragon Ball Z fan cut he found of “In the End” to Vegeta training.

Chyba jedyny album LP, którego jestem w stanie wysłuchać w całości bez ziewania. Potem poszli w stronę nudną i skrajnie bezpieczną.

Too much noise for me. In the end is a great song, and that’s it.

i actually don't mind linkin park. i did listen to a few tracks from them when i was younger but none from this album. not terrible but not for me

cool but a little too emo/edgy for me- someone who likes evanescence

First time listening to Linkin Park album. Several songs received a lot of airplay in the early 2000s. My first impression was “Limp Bizkit-adjacent". Then perhaps worse than LB (like that’s even possible). 2/5

Heavy handed, sloppy bland lyrics and awful generic rap interludes....BUT IN THE END, IT DOESN'T EVEN MATTER

Alas, it seems I have outgrown the angst of my teen years. This hasn't aged well. RIP Chester.

Really hated this album, although their transformers songs are goated

Never listened to a whole Linkin Park album. Probably won't again. It's not the worst, just not my thing. I did get some nostalgia feels though. Top tracks: "One Step Closer," "Crawling"

Is an album that you can get thru in a half hour a bad thing? No! Is this album good? No! There's a time and a place for everything, and I have never heard something more Y2K coded in my entire life. 2? 3? who cares. "In the end it doesn't even matter" What a prescient statement about this album, very self-aware.

--One Step Closer...ridiculous but it slaps --In the End...I don't like Chester's voice but he's good here --A Place for My Head...I like the rap flow here but it's still cheesy overall. I think Chester's scream singing would be more impactful if he dialed it back a little more --Cure for the Itch...not sure why this sound collage is on here, but it's pleasant. --Pushing Me Away...has a decent hook

Nothing makes it jump out as special

Interesting concept to blend hard rock and rap, but this was just too abrasive for me.

Ok. I feel a little better about my Ray of Light rating. This album was from the same period and was also played on repeat by a certain roommate. . . And I do not like it. It's just so contrived. I'll never understand how this band got so popular, or at least why people don't make fun of them the same way they do Nickelback. "In the End" is okay. Like they sort of stumbled across something approximating authenticity. And it's a fun sing-along song. I'll dole out an extra star for that. So <checks math> . . .

Fuuuuuck, this is horrible. But at least it's not some chap in a Nehru collar weeping to the "lush" sound ofa clarinet, tinkling glasses, and a synthesizer. I'm adding a star for that.

Very very much not my thing

I hate this type of music. I'll bump it up to a2 cause he's a powerful singer

4/10 This should be an album that clicks with me far more than it does. It came out just before my 16th birthday, had heavy guitars and angsty lyrics and followed in the footsteps of bands like Korn, Slipknot and Machine Head that I was already listening to. But Linkin Park were never a band that I’ve ever bothered with. I’ve heard all the big hits, which were impossible to miss in the early 00s, but nothing engaged me enough to dig deeper. Perhaps because I was already indulging in heavier music, this band that were a gateway for many people didn’t have much to offer someone who had already gone in the deep end. Listening to it now, a few things really jump out at me. First, it sounds so of its time that it’s almost laughable. The scratching, the rhythmically uninteresting rapping, the loudness wars mastering, it’s the dictionary definition of 2000’s production. Secondly, this is very much an anthemic pop record. It’s like someone gathered the most palatable aspects of bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit and wrapped them up in an emo NSYNC bow. Not that there’s anything particularly wrong with that, and again, it makes them a perfect ‘first heavy band’ for those just diving in, but it just isn’t my bag. The production to my ear is terrible. Despite the ‘quiet verse, loud chorus’ that they try, the over-compressed nature of it all just makes it lack the oomph that that dynamic change ought to have. The guitars in particular are so compressed that they feel like a wall of tone, rather than organic pieces of musicianship. There’s so little space for the instruments to breathe and it ends up feeling like an assault on the ears that you have to work hard to pick the parts from. From a song-writing point of view, they can obviously write heavy anthems, but frankly, the bits that I liked the most just reminded me of similar bits from songs by other artists that I like much more than this. It’s also all very, very samey and something about it just doesn’t quite feel genuine to me. Essentially, the ingredients are all great, but something about the meal doesn’t taste right. Extra points for being the gateway drug for so many. Papercut - Oof, the scratching does not kick this off well. The riffs are ok, I guess, but there’s no dynamic range at all. This type of rapping does not gel with me, particularly the strong emphasis that doesn’t really highlight the lyrics, but just adds a sort of soft aggression to the delivery. The singing is very pop too. One Step Closer - A big single. This verse reminds me a lot of Korn, but if Jonathan Davis was replaced by Nick Carter. It’s a great chorus, but the production just gives it this plasticy edge that makes it not sit quite right with me. I had this song in my head after the first spin through the album and my head canon version is better than the reality of it. Over-compressed and lacking dynamics, it’s a shame really. And the shut up bit near the end makes him sound like a budget Zack de la Rocha. With You - I think there’s too much going on in some of these songs. Even the quieter bits here are just stuffed full of too much and again, the loudness war mastering of this just makes it relentlessly lacking in range. There’s no subtlety to it. This one doesn’t have much in the way of hook either, it’s just a bit of a wall of bar long guitar chords for a chorus. Points Of Authority - Again, this feels quite Korny in the verse. It feels a bit corny in the chorus, as it happens. The scratching might as well be a bloke in the background just shouting “Year 2000” over and over again. The riffs here are pretty good actually and the rapping is better. But the balance of all of the parts is just bad. There’s not space for everything to have its place, everything just sounds like its competing with everything else to be heard. Crawling - Another big, big single. And there’s some actual dynamic range. Hurrah! This verse could have been clipped from an NSync song, but builds into the chorus. Perhaps a bit too much going on as it builds for my tastes, but when it hits, it’s a proper nu-metal anthem. Well written for what it is. Not really my bag, but I can see why it grabbed people. Runaway - Again, there’s a bit more dynamic range here. And again, it sounds like Backstreet Boys playing Korn in the verse. The chorus is ok, but it’s all a bit music by numbers and just isn’t grabbing me. By Myself - They really can’t have any sections where they don’t overdo the instrumentation can they? It’s like an assault on the ears. It’s more of that anthemic pop-metal that feels like it’s had its charm produced out of it to make it as radio friendly as possible. They really love those ringing, compressed chord structures, don’t they? In The End - Ah, the biggest hit single? Too much going on in a ‘quiet’ verse? Check. Unashamedly basic rapping? Check. Full bar compressed chords that follow a super basic structure? Check. It sounds like I hate it, but I actually don’t. It’s a well written, really decent pop song produced to sound heavy. But it’s also so boyband and so, so 2000. Fair play. A Place For My Head - More pointless scratching. There are some actually interesting rhythmic choices here so it stands out a bit from the other tracks. While I like some of the choices here, there’s nothing that really grabs me either. There’s a bit of a radio-friendly Machine Head about this. Forgotten - Some of these songs I can hardly tell when one ends and another begins. But there’s a bit of dynamic range again here, and some more rhythmically varied riffs, so that’s to be applauded. It’s very pop-rap in the verses. Again, nothing that’s really grabbing me though. Cure For The Itch - Ah, someone’s listened to Endtroducing. This is just not very well done though, is it? No subtlety to it at all. Pushing Me Away - At this point, this could have just been a repeat of any one of the album tracks from this album, it’s all just blending into one for me. It’s over-compressed, dynamically squashed and nothing in there grabs me. And my ears are tired.

Prior to this I would have said Linkin Park was one of the all time worst bands. Nickleback before Nickleback. After this listen I realize I was wrong. Definitely a legit band with some good ideas. That being said - everything beyond the bones of these songs is dated or ill advised. The music video for In The End summarized this well - the aesthetics are BAD. The hair, the clothes, the green screen EVERYTHING. When i was a kid I was repulsed by this and I still am. Then there is the production. For Gorillaz I called out the DJ record scratch - LP loves this sound. I do not understand it. I weak attempt to glob onto rap culture maybe, although the rappers of the day seemed to embrace these guys. There are also the obvious things about this I do not enjoy - which is the genre and the uber seriousness. Not for me, BUT definitely earned my respect. Linkin Park NOT the worst band of all time - maybe elevated nu-metal? Lets get AI to go back and erase all the record scratch sounds off nu-metal records.

Just not my thing…hard for me to listen to. I don’t know what else to say. I’m tired.

What was going on with us in this era of rap metal? Dark days. A couple songs that are kinda cool. Most of the album sounds the same. It’s better than Limp Bizkit?

Ugh, I've always disliked Linkin Park. ... After giving it a try, I still feel the same. I understand that this is an important album for many people as it serves as a sort of "intro" to a lot of genres, but outside of its impact, I just don't think it's good music. It's like how training wheels are useful on a bike, but no "good" bike has training wheels on them.

Worth a listen but that's all. 2/5

Bad genre for me

Whiny shouty screamy American nu metal. Not for me.

Another album where I was just confused why it's on the list. In the past week there have been three records from the 2000's and I've felt that way about all of them. There is some very good music from this decade, so I"m not just being a Boomer (I think). The pros-the songs and album are all fairly short, which made for at least a tolerable listen. There are also a couple of songs-the hits Crawling and In the End-that aren't just the same as everything else. The cons-I didn't like nu-metal then and I still don't like it. It was maybe "cool" back in the early 2000's, but it just sounds super dated now. My other issue is that I typically like songs of depression and sadness, but this was just too much (yes, I know in hindsight it was clearly an issue for Chester Bennington). There is no relief in sight, and that helps to ease some of the bluntness of the presentation. Overall I didn't hate the listen as much as I thought I would, but I won't listen to it again.

Somehow I feel very dirty listening to this as a 38 years old man. Don’t really know why that is.

Not gonna lie, my vocal cords hurt listening to the screaming lyrics. Not my scene, as this tries to be metal / rap. Listened before: No Saved to library: No Favorite tracks: In the End

I've been playing the new Twenty One Pilots album, Breach, on repeat since it came out. I wish I were listening to that instead of this. Hybrid Theory was released when I was in high school. It's been a while since I've listened to Linkin Park. For good reason. So repetitive. Meh. Listened before? Y Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.

I mean, it’s actually pretty solid. But, I’m a person of taste. 2*

Sounded like the same song 12 times in a row, even the ones I know I’ve heard before. Not a fan

I tried to put myself in the mind of an angsty teenage boy listening to this and found that helped a lot. In The End remains an obvious banger. But overall not for me.

Radio friendly unit shifter. No creativity or imagination beneath the hooks.

This has some elements I like, yet the whole package is so cliché and pubertal I so can't enjoy this. Nu metal tends to be like that (please give me the real thing) but this is particularly boring. No. One star up from 1 because I can get the appeal and some songs can be fun and radio-worthy (not on my favourite stations, but still).

For a few hours I actually thought this album was good.. though in hindsight, that was only because I accidentally ate moldy rye bread..

I feel like this was a mid listening experience for me. This album does have a ton of their hits on here but overall this was a miss for me personally. These songs just sound angry and whiny to me so I probably won’t be listening to this again anytime soon.

Yep, still don't like nu metal. Add the whiney voice and it's goodbye.

Not my cup of tea! in the end is a certified banger tho

Eh, other than the two well known songs I was just kinda waiting for the album to be over.

2.4 // I don't use this word often or lightly, but this is cringe. I see how people like it, but that does not mean I like it. It isn't nice, but I do think a little lesser of the person who loves this album. Objectively, it isn't terrible, but I do not like it. It should, sadly, be on this list, however. I do (and I'm not sure if it is ironic or not) like how the "crawling in my skin" line sounds. Maybe it's the COD nostalgia.

Minus the vocals, very energetic, dark, moody music, could be good for weigh lifting music. But OMG the guy singing is insufferable! In every song he is the victim and super angry. What a cry baby. If only the songs were about something else. Will not listen to it again.

every single song immediately transported me to the end credits of every superhero movie in the early 2000s. i genuinely don't enjoy the wall of guitar vibes of this album, but there were a few moments worry of bobbing my head.

Better than incubus

not my thing

Linkin Park took literally everything I disliked about music in the year 2000 and combined into one awful, inauthentic amalgam. And it caught on so well that it appears on this list. God dammit.

nostalgia can't save this one

I blame Aerosmith and Run DMC for this shit. 2/5 #156

To continue the cricket analogy, after posting my 50 yesterday, I took a wild swing at this, it clipped an edge and was dropped at slip… or something like that. That’s a roundabout way of saying that this wasn’t for me although I was surprised how many of these songs I’d heard before given that I’ve never listened to the album, possibly in clubs or music TV channels. Quite often this sounds somewhere between Korn (a band I used to like) and Incubus (a band I still like) but it lacks the looseness that either of those bands had, Korn with their hip hop groove or Incubus with their SoCal surfer vibes. It all felt a bit stiff and ‘techy’ and I’m not a fan of either vocalist. I can see the appeal but not for me.

high school

I was a huge fan of Linkin Park when I was a kid. I’m pretty sure I played this album on repeat on my Sony Walkman for weeks when I was like 10 or 11. Listening to this now, I have no idea why I liked it. I wasn’t particularly angsty or angry or anything. I think it was mostly my attempting to figure out my music preferences. It doesn’t quite hold up for me now, but I think the nostalgia alone is saving this from a 1/5.

Lotta yelling and every song sounded the same. Limp Bizkit like

Einfach nix für mich 2/5

In The End is a great song. Everything else, I don't enjoy listening to.

this is familiar to me but quite boring

Like a better Limp Bizkit, but "In the End" is a banger. 2.5

It's all pretty samey and depressing but it was OK. I'd prefer not to have to hear it all the way through again.

Very Limp Bizkit-esque and so self-serious. The nu-metal/rap hybrid makes me wince at times.

Just not my kinda rock, to be honest.

I have never like Linkin Park. I don’t understand why I needed to listen to this. I only knew In the End.

Leider doch zu Rockig und selte imene Mood für sone Ladig Geschreie

I'm not sure that this one has aged particularly well. Hybrid Theory was huge in the turn-of-the-millenium music world, particularly among kids between their early teens and early twenties. The rapping feels a little simplistic, the music has a dark harmonic bent and the vocals sound like they're lifted from a melodic hardcore band but cleaned up a bit. Lyrically, Linkin Park hint at an angst beneath the surface ("I'm about to break") but they're just broad enough about it that there's everything to latch onto for a teenager, but nothing to dig into. There are a lot of bands that wouldn't have been big in the early Oughts if it weren't for Hybrid Theory, so this is a bit of a landmark album in that sense. It's very of its time -- rather than a genuine example of underground music breaking through to the mainstream, this feels like music inspired by a number of alternative rock and hip-hop subgenres that was just sent global by clever A&R work by Warner. Some interesting things that happen with Linkin Park that are worth looking at elsewhere: the guitar rhythms and chord structures are pretty typical for nu-metal of the time. You'll hear that kind of chugging and chromatic descent through a riff and periodic discordant harmonics/feedback squeals throughout Korn (sadder and weirder) and Incubus (much sunnier and still weirder). Even the "glassy" tones like the hook that runs through 'Papercut' are typical of the high-gain, rectified amps (and probably a phaser and an MXR Distortion+) that were everywhere at the time. The electronic bits added in by their tuntablist were everywhere; I have a preference for the way Chris Kilmore injected dupes of Brandon Boyd's voice into Incubus's work, but you may also enjoy the scratch-heavy stuff that DJ Lethal was doing in Limp Bizkit. I don't hate Mr. Hahn's work in LP, though (he's not the problem). The thing that makes Linkin Park distinct is the dual vocalists. Mike Shinoda handles most of the rapping but does some backing vocals (I think he also plays a little guitar). Chester Bennington became the face of the band and he deservedly earned praise for his vocal work. Both his clean and distorted vocals are impressive. A really decent scream, especially for 25 years ago -- and that broke some rules in 2000's pop music. He has a good range and a strong delivery and is complimented nicely by Shinoda's call-and-response chiming in in a deeper, more speaking-like register. LP are let down by the repetitive song structures, same-y melodies and the bland way that they express their angst. Most songs follow the theme of 'I am experiencing a darkness and there is no light of hope' which is a feeling worth expressing but would benefit from some more poetry than is offered. Add a little quiet/loud dynamic play (never a slow build with these guys!) and then mix in the other stuff and you've got a Linkin Park stew going. This album is kind of like The Strokes: it's probably someone's whole introduction to other kinds of music. On its own, this really isn't an exemplar of what was best about the music of Y2K; it's just what sold a lot of records. It's like the exact average of nu-metal but with the studio polish you get from early major label recruitment. Try White Pony by Deftones or one of Incubus's circa-2000 albums instead (Make Yourself for polished semi-metal and Morning View for the post-nu-metal drift toward mainstream rock). Or Faith No More or Dillinger Escape Plan for something more heavy. It's fine, and should you wonder what the hell was happening with the alt that broke mainstream around Y2K, this is a good place to start and stop your investigation. Just suppress your cringe reflex or it's going to come on hard. Or get a full crash course on nu-metal cliches by listening to 'Crawling In The Dark' by Hoobastank and save yourself some time. 2/5 Most enjoyable tracks: 'Papercut', 'Points of Authority', 'Cure for the Itch'.

Too heavy for me. Makes me stressed and angry. One or two better tracks

Zu sggro

I understand this album ultimately went 12x platinum. I understand it has 4 singles (Papercut, Crawling, One Step Close and In the End) that were in very regular rotation on the radio. But there are very real times throughout the record that I couldn’t tell if this was Linkin Park or any other Rap/Rock band from the era (P.O.D.. Limp Bizket or even Kid Rock).

Not as great as I remember ngl

Probably has cultural/nostalgic impact, but would resonate with my angsty 13 year old self. Tracks to Track: Crawling, In

This album is turning 25 in a few months. Wow. The fact that I didn't like this when it came out (I was 20) says a lot. In retrospect, it seems like something 20-year-old me might have liked, alas, no. The only part of this that has aged well is "In the End", thematically speaking. They were right!

A couple of superb songs, but generally speaking, the sound of the record is just too much. Specially the guitars. It doesn't sound very natural. But a good album indeed.

lol, still kinda like it tho

Nostalgic, good for a work out, not my favorite anymore. Not the best production.

Whoa, what a great idea! Let's blend together the most annoying aspects of rock/metal with rap and call it Linkin Park. What a wet dream it must have been for the promoters and record labels with dollar signs in their eyes. Obviously, millions of people agreed, bought the record, saw them live and drew the band's logo on their textbooks at school. Personally, this music makes me both angry and sad. Angry, that this sucks so bad, yet so many people spent their well earned money back in the day on this band and sad those same people are now leaving the CD's on the boulevard for free giveaway day. Yeah, it was a good idea while it lasted.

What eventually became nu-metal, when I was a teenager, was called rap-rock. We (my freaks and geeks friends group) were obsessed with it. The Judgement Night s/t, 311, Orange 9mm, and of course the perfectors of the genre, Rage Against The Machine. The Beasties dipped in, especially with Check Your Head, but were generally sample-based in our era. Most of these bands retained the anti-authoritarian and street culture of punk and hip-hop, even when grooving on some reggae or ska. So when Limp Bizkit emerged, we didn’t take them seriously. And I mean musically. And Linkin Park seemed to duck in the door after them, riding the wave of boom bap and Marshall stacks that all the kids (and by this time our gang were kids no more) loved. To us it was a politically neutered, dumbed down, radio-shiny version of rap-rock, and we were glad at the advent of the term ‘nu-metal’ because it separated this pablum from the raw ferocity and the real real of Zack DLR and Chaka Malik. But at some point all that gatekeeping became unimportant, and I was able to hear what was special about this band. It IS the massive, stadium-in-your-ears production. It IS the “slick” layers of guitar roar and synth wail that perfectly set the stage for the late great Chester Bennington’s metal god vocals. Whatever you think of the band, nobody can deny this kid’s voice was a phenomenon. And of course he is gone way too goddamn soon, another victim of depression, the forever curse of those who can’t help but see through the facade. Overall, it’s still a little too clean at the edges for my taste. I’ll always be drawn back to RATM or even early 311, neither of which are particularly punk in their production, but which have a more stripped down, focused approach to the music all around. Some bands try hard to make hits, and that’s fine, but those bands, no matter how innovative, will never be a part of the discussion about music as something more.

The more "nu" metal I listen to the more I appreciate the fact that I spent the last half of the 90's and most of the noughties listening to pretty much nothing but The Grateful Dead, Phish and Widespread Panic. I was actually surprised by how much I disliked this. "IS THERE NO STANDARD ANYMOOOORE?!!?" 2

Kinda corny Not for me

Well I bought it back in the day. Not been spun since then. Listening back, it sounds ok. But I’m struggling to see what all the hype was about now.

My teen angst soundtrack was more Deftones than Linkin Park. By the time this album came out I still had teen angst but listened to DnB. I do get the significance of this and remember hearing some early stuff in the free CV that came with Rock Sound magazine… This album is kinda peak nu metal sound and has been an inspiration to many. Based on the rapping in a place for my head it may have been the inspiration for an angst ridden AI bot to write a rap song about feelings. I can understand why it’s a top album for many millennials. Just not this one

I'll be honest, I'm not too excited for this one. Just not at all in the mood. And I might be slightly judgemental of the genre. Whatever, let's see. First song starts aggressive, as I expected, but what I was not expecting is the rap-influence delivery on the lyrics. This is very heterossexual. I like the end of the chorus, when he does his signature scream in the line "beneath my skinnnnn". This brigde (if you can call it that) is cool too. This is weird to say, but I'd like this way more if I heard it live. There's something about the lack of subtlety in the lyrics and even in the instrumentals that keeps me from liking this. I feel like I might like some things here, but the sound of the album itself is not that much for me. Like ok I get it you're mad and sad. It's not even the fact that this is just noise. Actually it is that, Because I like other kinds of heavy music. But I don't have sense of musical logic to this. The chorus of Points of Authority sounds like something that would play in the radio station on GTA 5. Which is not even an insult, that game had some gems, but yeah just reminded me of that. Oh Crawling right! Yeah I'm sorry I can't take this song seriously after years of seeing it be used in memes. It's the go-to song to that kind of thing. In mean, it is the best song so far, so I should look beyond my prejudices and compliment it as such! I was saying that Crawling was the most memed song of all time....... and then In The End starts playing.... Man I don't know, this is the closest the album has gotten to being good I guess. The chorus is cool! 3 tracks left, I'm just gonna write the conclusion. Cure For the Itch being the most interesting thing here and also being the second to last track... man what. And even then it's not necessarily good, but at least it's a change in sound. Pushing Me Away is potentially my favorite song in the whole record. And it's thanks to the fact that they take a step back for a lot of it, and the build-up feels more earned. This is what I meant at the beginning, I can like this genre, it's just rare. Yeah, this was not for me at all. This feels very teenagery. The focus on like two emotion. Being angry all the time. I don't know Linkin Park's story except the one big thing. So yeah, maybe this constant mood is warranted. But I guess I just express these emotions, when I feel them, in a different way. Nothing about this album was interesting. No moment left me surprised or excited. Again, maybe if I was drunk and I was hearing it live I'd join in the mosh pit. But listening to this at home? Yeah, probably never again. But if you like this, more power to you! So, it's a 2. Bye

Who hurt you, Chester? I was familiar with the singles; but then, how could you have been alive at the turn of the century and NOT been familiar with them? They were blasted everywhere. And I suppose, for that, they do carry a bit of nostalgia for those especially angsty times. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on your pain tolerance, I guess. The unfamiliar non-singles were sorta meh for me, which makes me wonder if the singles are of an equally meh caliber but get a pass because of their familiarity? I don't think there's enough here for me to spend too much time pondering it, though; so I'm just going to move on to better things. Which seems apropos considering the parallel this album's anger and historical time period share with my own life's timeline.

Did nada pour moi. I feel nothing..

At the time of writing this there seems to be a wave of reappraisal for the nu-metal genre. It's gotten to a point where many previously ridiculed artists seem to get geniune praise and acclaim for their music. This seems strange to me as someone who's grown up clowning on this stuff with Linkin Park being one of the frequent targets. It occurs to me that the previous attitude towards this band is wholy unjustified as to this day I've never heard a full album from them. Of course I know the hits off of this album, as they are at least memorable if anything. With all of this in mind I'm willing to attempt to see past my prejudices and give it a fair shot. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised. Papercut The angsty lyrics are a bit much, feels a bit hamfisted. It sure is a staple for this style of music, but I don't love the rapping. Comes of as kinda corny. Impressive vocals. The final minute of the track has some really poweful atmosphere with the layering and the heavy drums. Average. 2.5/5 One Step Closer Great guitar riff. I really struggle with the lyrics. Really don't like that breakdown. Decent chorus. Average. 2.5/5 With You Kinda like Chester Bennington's parts on this song. Great performance. Really like the structure of his verses. Decent chorus. Decent. 3.5/5 Points of Authority The blown out speaker vocal effect instantly dates the song. There is some nice contrast between the quieter and the louder parts in the vocals. They do a great job at balancing withinhis vocal range, fitting the instrumental perfectly to whatever Chester is doing vocally. The rap verse feels a bit tacked on. Don't love the chorus. Fine. 3/5 Crawling Yeah it's this song... Can't take that chorus seriously. Honestly the lyrics aren't that bad considering this particular writing style. Really like the way the verses build up to the chorus. Great post chorus. Iconic in it's own particular way, don't love it though. 3/5 Runaway Interesting electronic intro. Love the contrast to the blaring distorted guitars. The chorus is a bit clunky. Decent breakdown. Kinda forgetable. Average. 2.5/5 By Myself I like the different structure here, feels refreshing. The background synth provides some cool ambience to the track. Impressive screams. Really like the distortion on the guitar. Decent. 3.5/5 In The End There's only one correct way to listen to this song: with the iconic music video attached to it playing in 360p. And by God that music video is probably the most year 2000 thing ever made. Those visuals could not be made today. A piece of art worthy of the Louvre. A masterpiece. 5/5. The song is alright too I suppose. A Place For My Head That opening riff is really great. Really like the instrumental to this. The rap parts really go well against it. Amazing breakdown/bridge. Love the energy of this track. Good. 4/5 Forgotten Great transition. Amazing energy leading up on the chorus. The verses are a bit bland. Impressive vocals. Melodic chorus. Decent. 3.5/5 Cure for the Itch Abrasive intro. Doesn't sound all too great. The experimental sampling added up to nothing. The instrumental part has some interesting moments, but kinda falls flat in the end. Average. 2.5/5 Pushing Me Away Kinda forgetable. Doesn't really distinguish itself much from previous tracks. The guitar on the chrous is pretty cool I suppose. Average. 2.5/5 In my quest to not be too harsh on this I might've ended up rating a few of these tracks a little too favourably. Truth be told, once you get over the angsty lyrics and the dated rapping you end up with something pretty bland. If it wasn't for Chester Bennington's outstanding vocal performances you'd be stuck with something extremely average. He does a lot of the heavy lifting to elevate some of these mediocre tracks into something that is at least listenable. The lyrics are too direct to be interesting, the guitars all sound vaguely the same, you only feel the impact of the drums on a few of these tracks, and most of the songs are structured really similarly. You do get some belters when it comes to choruses, but the lyrical content becomes so goofy the only thing left to appreciate is Chester's voice. For the most part this is just fine, and while the hits do carry an air of memorablility they aren't much more interesting than the other songs when examined through a vacuum. It all ends up being a pretty samey experience where most of the songs kinda just blend together in your head. Sure no one is denying their talent here, but it does suffer a bit from age as well as being a bit unrefined songwriting wise. The production also does not help with the sameiness as its style causes the songs to sound like they lack some sonic depth. Where everything is just mixed to be loud and aggressive, which kinda kills all humanity and soul from the instruments. And while my individual track ratings might suggest a higher rating it doesn't really reflect the frustrating listening experience of the full album. While they may possess some decent individual qualities, the flaws become too apparent over an extended listen to be anything short of annoying. Won't bash you for loving this thing, and I would gladly sing along to a few of the choruses with you. However I'd rather keep it to just a couple of songs if that's okay. 2.5/5 rounded down to a 2/5

The sounds of my life as a pre-teen

I gave 𝘏𝘺𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺 an honest shot and even listened to 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘢 and 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘔𝘪𝘥𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 for context. Still, it just doesn’t click with me. 1. Chester Bennington’s screams on 𝘏𝘺𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺 feel more forced than fierce — his clean vocals are solid, but the shouting isn’t quite there yet. 2. Mike Shinoda’s rapping also lacks the confidence and flow he shows later, especially on 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘢. 3. Without the electronic polish and DJ elements, 𝘏𝘺𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺 often sounds like just another angsty metal album from the early 2000s. 4. Honestly, I wouldn’t recommend 𝘏𝘺𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺 as the best entry point to Linkin Park — 𝘔𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘢 refines the formula and delivers it with far more impact. That said, 𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘯𝘥 is a clear standout, and I understand why 𝘏𝘺𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘥 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺 earned its place on the 1001 Albums list. It’s a defining moment for its genre — just not one that resonates with me personally.

Another album I’ve heard a lot and grew up with. Very neutral on Linkin Park in general. They are objectively good but really overplayed to the point where I listened to this album and felt nothing. Which makes it really difficult to review because the songs are good, but just illicit no response from me. I like the song Cure for the Itch, really cool song, but otherwise I would never put this album on.

I can appreciate what they were going for 20 years ago, and there’s time when it works, but this album just ain’t very good. Linkin Park is better than their meme reputation, but in other ways they’re like if Simple Plan was a little bit heavier. 2.5 Stars

Tended to like the singing more than the rapping more than the screaming but not a huge fan no matter what, don't think I'm angsty enough for it. Some songs I quite liked but most of them I just wanted to be over. Favourite: In the End Least: With You

I'm really not a linkin Parker.

I know all the songs so I must have listened to it in the past. But I’m not a fan of American indie music

They felt like a label-assembled, cheap knock off when this album came out, and having listened to this for the first time in many years, my opinion hasn’t changed. My god, this is all so angsty, yet all the lyrics are incredibly vague—almost like what you’d get after focus group testing to catch the widest possible swath of disaffected, sweaty youth. The “raps” are completely devoid of flow or flavor to make sure every suburban, cargo-shorted, upside down visor wearing male between the ages of 8 and 24 can safely digest “urban” culture. It might be a great album when you have more hormones than sense, but I’m middle aged and my ears work so fuck this shit.

Angsty music for teenagers.

I really don't like nu-metal, and this is no exception. I admit I dozed a bit during this on a plane journey. Low two; I didn't hate it quite as much as I expected.

Save yourself some time and just listen to the first song. Every other song on the album is identical.

Aaaah, enfin! Un album de marde! Ouf, je commençais à m’inquiéter...

Fav: In The End Least Fav: Points Of Authority Contender for the most dated album on this list?

So this is the kind of rubbish that I associate with nu-metal. Vastly overproduced, artificial and as far from the ethos of rock and roll as you can get. A couple of tracks saved it, but overall not great.

It was alright, not my favorite

I love Rap and I really like Rock, but Rap Rock has always been a genre I don't really like. With this in mind, I had mostly avoided Linkin Park, as I had already heard a couple of songs by them and never really liked them. This is my first time listening to a Linkin Park record front to back. I gotta say that I expected worse, but I wasn't converted. The instrumentals aren't bad, they manage to get pretty heavy guitar lines going and the drums aren't bad either. The little electronic touches and the scratching didn't really add much for me. In terms of the singing, I found Shinoda to be really lacking. His delivery is very flat, and he's repetitive and very simple in his lyricism. I don't think he's good as a singer, a rapper, or a writter (at least in this record). Bennington, on the other hand, while not my favourite vocalist, has a much higher level, more varied delivery, and really brings the songs alive. I liked how open about their struggles the band is throughout the lyrics and topics of the songs, although the lyrics are a bit simple. I think my favourite song was "Points of Authority", I felt like Shinoda's contribution didn't break up the flow of the songs that much, the chorus is pretty good and the metallic snare during the chorus was a pretty cool detail. Dislike the scratches but they're all over the album so not much to do about that. While I understand that part of the appeal at the moment was the whole rapping over a metal-ish track, I think that this record would've been much better if they just went full nu-metal with only Bennington as a vocalist. For what it is, I think there are better records I'd rather revisit than this one.

In the End, please Runaway and take your anger and your instruments. Sounds like a very disturbing and difficult childhood with lots of yelling and violence. Hopefully, now that the members of LP are no longer trapped in situations beyond their control (and are filthy rich) they can make their own decisions and are One Step Closer to finding inner peace. High Voltage and Pushing Me Away (which they are doing) are listenable, the rest of the album is the same heavy drumbeats and screaming into the mic. (2.2*s) want to like them more, but can’t.

eminem if he was somehow even edgier

Not my vibe currently, so rating 2.5

The production on Cure for the Itch is the only thing saving this from a 1

point2.

det får ett pluspoäng för nostalgi men jag anser att det här inte har åldrats med någon vidare värdighet. scratchandet går varmt.

There is no way that I am going to like this. I lived through hearing the singles on the radio. There is no way a re-evaluation of this band will change much for me. We used to laugh at the "Shut up when I'm talking to you" line when I was a teenager and it's just as dumb now. Every song sounds the same. It sounds like 311. I think the only song that aged well is In the End. For some reason, it doesn't bother me as much.

The part of me this spoke to so hard back in the day .. is not in charge anymore.

2emo4me, never got the appeal

I’ve never been a linkin park fan

I know it's sacrilege to a certain age group but I have never been able to engage with LP's earnest angst rap-rock. I've also never listened to a whole album. I can't say that I enjoyed it. It was a sort of chore today. It all was also sort of a pastiche of repeated themes both lyrically and musically. Lost my attention in a sea of same.

Not my type of music anymore, although the sound feels so nostalgic. I liked the fun instrumentation with using a cool piano, a fun synth or a good guitar riff. What I couldn't get behind was the lyrcisim and the loudness of it all. It is not my style so it was hard to enjoy. Looking at this objectively, I think it is a solid 3/5. I can admire the production and the relvance of this album when it came out, but I don't think it stands strong.

I can't believe I voluntarily listened to an entire Linkin Park album

Reminds me of very specific kids in high school, mostly friends of mine whose music I vastly disagreed with lol

All due respect th Chester Bennington, who lost his life while fighting against child trafficking, this music is still lowest common denominator. Back to his crusade, along with Soundgardens Chris Cornell, against child trafficking, the lyrics of "In the End" really hit hard

This wasn't for me but was proud of myself for listening to the whole thing as a hater

I've heard worse music. Nu metal isn't for me.

Any initial novelty that comes with the edgy nu-metal vibe started to dissipate within the first few songs. Perhaps any chance at me enjoying this kind of music was whipped out of me by the Triple M propaganda wing but I just found most of this annoying. In the end gets a pass though

Sometimes when in the mood

fUcK PaReNtS

These guys feel like they're trying so hard to be cool, but are so not cool.

If I’ve learned one thing from the internet it’s that a lot of people DEEPLY love/d Linkin Park. It didn’t make me a fan or anything, but I did listen to this with a different frame of mind than I would have a few years ago.

but in the end it doesn't even matter 2/5

Edgy enough to split hairs with, but the emotion's clearly 100% authentic so it gets a pass. It's a surprisingly solid metal record (props to Chester's vocals, the real highlight here) and an unsurprisingly shoddy rap record. Of all the angsty music 14-year old you could have been listening to, there's far worse out there, but also far better.

Not the worst nu-metal, but not the best either. A bit too polished and quantized for me. I know the guy was legitimately very troubled, but also, the lyrics are remarkably teenagery. Hard to not feel cynical that they knew what they were doing, and it wasn’t necessarily fully earnest. Here’s what I did like though: literally every song sounded like plausible entrance music for a wrestler, and that’s pretty funny.

This was much cooler when I was 11

Sounds like what I’d hear on the bus on the way to school in 4th grade Takes itself too seriously, also why is there so much rap is that Linkin’s park thing that I didn’t realize? I thought it was just rappy in their radio hit songs. The remix-y part at the end of Points of Authority is particularly goofy In the end is still a banger ngl Lyrics pretty mid Chester Bennington was a talented vocalist so gotta give him credit Someone should make one of those yelling goat remixes for the song By Myself Medium 2

One of the most overrated bands of all time. A band that highly benefited from the Kurt Cobain effect. The most meme-y band in the most meme-y genre of music. In all fairness, this isn’t the worst album so far, but it’s still bad and unlistenable. Vocals are like nails on a chalkboard, and the lyrics are terrible. Unfortunately this album only deserves to be on the 1001 list just by how inflated they got. Only pro is the production on the guitar is good at some points and there are some half decent breakdowns. Won’t ever intentionally listen to this band. Weak 2/5.

This album was everywhere - but it really hasn’t aged well. Corndog lyrics and fat sausage compression everywhere. This album must’ve been great when you’re 13 Good songs are the singles: Papercut, Crawling, In the End, and One Step Closer. Didn’t mind a Place for my head and Forgotten either. The other tracks are weak and don’t do anything for me. It’s not a great record, but I like this Linkin Park more than the U2-rips of their later stuff that I’ve heard. Solid 2/5

Kakav blast from the past 😂 sjećam se sebe kao baš baš klinke i kako mi je ovo bilo tad dobro 😁 današnjim ušima teško mogu ovo appreciateati van nostalgije (iako mi realno nije loš album za to vrijeme), tako da će biti 2/5, 4/10.

I can’t get past his voice. It feels like a theatrical performance in a play at times. Almost like I’m listening to an angsty high school play.

I just don't get it. I know, I know - they mix melody and heavy guitars and electronics and rapping/turntables and supposedly emotionally meaningful lyrics. I dare you to grab 5 random ingredients, stick them in a blender and pound the contents - ie- BBQ sauce, broccoli, yogurt, hot dogs, blue cheese. Nauseating. Still better the Steely Dan. I do kind of like Cure for the Itch (less ingredients maybe). But overall - so much noises just swirling in a whiny agro mess.

A few good songs here…

In the end is a decent song. The rest I wasn’t wild about. Most of the songs sound the same.

One of the more successful Nu Metal albums. Feels a little overproduced and the lyrical themes don’t really resonate with me. 2/5 Probably won’t listen again

2 out of 5. Mostly nostalgia drove this score. A bit too edgy for me now that I'm older.

Not my vibe

Lot of people like Linkin Park; I am just not one of them.

Annoyed me in then, annoys me now.

Stinkin’ Fart lol. In The End is a tune. The rest is absolute garbage.

Couldn't finish, really not into it

Couldn't be assed to go back to the well on this one—whatever

Не моё, но кто то любит

Chester, I hope you have the peace now that you never had in life. That said... listening to an entire album of "mental health crisis" is painful in multiple ways. Hybrid Theory wouldn't exist in a world with accessible, decent, affordable psychiatric care.

Kompromisslos, laut, Stilmix. Ich mag keinen Rap, aber Rock. Manchmal muss es genauso klingen.

Very forgettable

Not my thing. Like rap love rock but this just seems pointless stop start rap rock

Not for me.

I HATE how overproduced the vocals are. I DONT CARE if this part has a bitcrusher and this one has a glitch effect , and this one has weird panning (which by the way happens SO MUCH). The vocals/lyrics overall are terrible in my opinion and damn near ruin the whole thing. I feel like on old person writing this but there are so many ways to do the rap-metal thing and the screaming thing and the repetitive hook thing which are all infinitely better than this. The real only redeeming quality is the amazing guitars and raw instrumentals, and I quite like the vinyl scratching in some parts. The vocals are just so annoying that it totally ruins anything. Favourite songs: Just to prove my point, the instrumental song second till the end is by far my favourite. - I think the effects are really cool. Overall around 4/10

So there's some ear candy here. Mostly rhythmic dj stuff which i can be a sucker for. The album feels overproduced and spliced together. At times it made me think of a dumb local band. I've always struggled with thecheart on the sleeve lyrics but in light of Chester's suicide maybe I should revisit. It's just too on the nose for me. I prefer a lil mystery. There are some things I like here when I pulled my snobby head out of my ass and gave it a listen. To he honest though I can't imagine it has any real staying power. It will always be a product of its time. And that's OK.

This reminds me of introspective emos at school wearing hyper-baggy jeans with chains, who listened to bands like Coheed and Cambria and wallowed in their faux pain. Their only real pain at that time being they'd forgotten to do their homework for Further Maths and Mrs Cole was in a particularly foul mood so they were worried they'd get detention. It's bland, it's less ground-breaking than a plastic hammer, and the rapping/scratching is bad. It has 2 songs which I consider passable, one of which, In the End, is decent.

Not a fan

This took me right back to secondary school, where it's year 8 and half the year think they could be the next Mike Shinoda, and the other half think they could be the next Chester Bennington. None of them were right. My main issue with this album is just how safe it all feels - it's dealing with mental health and substance abuse, but in a way that still feels made for radio and surprisingly inoffensive. It's angsty pop masquerading as rock/metal. It wasn't the record for me back in year 8, and it's not the record for me now.

I love a couple of the songs on this album, but never listened to the entire thing before. It really isn't good.

Favorittlåt: In The End

Es sind drei Lieder, die mir sehr gut gefallen. Ansonsten geht das Album an mir vorüber.

Nah not really a fan

Mid, don’t really like Linkin Park, way too simple

Crawling and In The End were tolerable, but the rest was kinda the worst of nu metal white trying to sound harder than they were.

It's not that I don't like angry music. I could listen to Rage any day of the week. Trying to put my finger on why I enjoy RATM, but kind of feel like just shaking my head at Linkin Park, I think it's that Rage's anger is turned outward. It's protest music explicitly about injustice. Linkin Park is yelling 'shut up,' too - but it sounds like it's directed at their parents, or girlfriends, or maybe their inner demons - but either way, it's just a lot harder to take seriously when you're not a teenage boy.

Honestly, not as bad as I thought it would be. I appreciated Chester's singing, and an angsty teenage me would have been all over it at the time. The lyrics were more vulnerable that I expected. But, it's fairly bland and formulaic. The rapping is terrible and banal. 2/5.

Dette er ikke min type band. Så gadd ikke å høre på hele albumet

Pretty cringe but I didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. At least it was short

Nah. This ain't for me.

How dare they even suggest this?

Cannot say I am over-impressed; yes it does go cross-genre sometimes but it comes over more as decorative rather than intrinsic to the music. Otherwise the tracks mostly go back to the same old style of rocking guitars and shouted vocals (although I will say they are clear). Nothing here that makes them stand out to me.

Meh, if you're not angry.

wau nuo toistokerrat huhhuh. ja joo ei ole kovin hyvä bändi heh.. omg so aaangry... like us in generation... angry... chesterillä yksi ärsyttävimmistä äänistä koskaan omg its so perfect so much angst.... arvaa mikä on oikeaa vihaa... sanoo ''prkl''... PRKL PRRRRKL... ja kuiskutellen: hii hoi hoi ja rommia pullo... PRKL.. PRKL.. the real angry mans quiet.. sitting silent like shadows in the shadow.. prkl prkl you hear... prkl.. not this AAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh like woman... not womanly hollering hooting.. typical american rhetoric. joo vielä paskempaa mitä muistin annetaan nyt se kaksi niin ei tarvi runkkailla.. in the end

not for me

Not my thing at all but this album is nostalgic for me

Now this album is tricky for me, it came out when I was 13. I loved 70s rock and prog, my 9 year old cousin had \"found\" linkin park and was obsessed. Need I say more the walls just went up. I have tried since but it's just not my Jazz I find it all a bit too \"meh\". I know hard-core fans are really in to them but, leave me out, thanks.

Didn't really like it back then, nothing has really changed. I respect what they do, and they were way more palatable than a lot of the contemporaries.

I liked a few of these but overall the effect of listening to this was not a pleasant one

Honestly, most of it is shite. You probably shouldn't trust anyone who is over 14 and still love this album. Yet, it is quite remarkable that they made a record that spoke to so many teenagers for so many years, and only for that it deserve 2 stars.

This is album is overhyped by people who listened to it as angry and troubled edgy teens. It wasn't good and still isn't. 2/5

Was hoping for more of the guilty pleasure appeal here, but most of it is very samey and rather whiny. Best Song: In The End Worst Song: Crawling

I understand why people might love this album but I don't like anyone yelling at me. Sorry, Chester.

Was expecting better.

Must be the nostalgia. 2.4.

What do you get when you combine Rock, Rap, and Pop? Shit.

not for me

Never liked them. Too aggressive and frankly dated in 2024. Only listened to a few tracks.

Juvenile. Not good.

Yeah, this Linkin Park album is closer to Limp Bizkit than *Meteora*. It's only saving grace is "Crawling" and the closer "Pushing Me Away" which are the closest thing to being three star songs. However, they're not. Most of this album is plain old fucking horrible. By all means, *Hybrid Theory* is worse than *Meteora* (3.8) ★½

Like a teeny tots version of Rage Against The Machine with baby’s first DJ turntables and aw diddums screamo vocals flying around. After just a few tracks I felt like I was melting back into being an angsty teenager and almost tripped over a skateboard that had magically grown over the process of listening to this. Some legit awful tracks with the most cluttered, churned, plastic production and the best songs like Crawling and In The End aren’t even songs anymore if they ever were, just memes. Kind of almost look back on it fondly because it was such a big part of the music fabric at the time however cringy. Singles off of Meteora are better though.

Not my cup of tea

I mean it’s okay, I guess… All the songs sound similar, heavy guitar riff, some screaming and a white boy rap/breakdown part. I don’t necessarily hate it, but I’m certainly not going to go searching for it again.

I really didn't like this band back in the day. Still don't think they are all that great but better than Limp Bizkit and some of the other Nu Metal bands...

It's got some good and familiar songs, but a lot of stinkers on it too. And I always start my day with this list, and I really don't like being yelled at in the morning! Thank you.

Hmm not for me. Simpsons: No

Stop yelling at me.

I am a psychiatric and substance use disorder registered nurse and I've had a lot of patients describe this band as an enormous influence on their recovery, so I come to this with an open mind and an open heart. This is schlocky, overproduced mediocrity. But don't worry, I'll never tell my patients that I feel this way.

Better than Limp Bizkit/10

Makes you realise how good Nirvana were.

I listened to 3/4 of this ages ago, then just relistened to most of the second half just now. I think it makes me laugh people thinking this is really emotional, but I do think it's good for what it is and I'm just a snob, critic and a hater. So I think it is a 2 but could easily understand why certain people would put this a 5. And good for them. Let people like what they chuffin' like!

My wife liked it better than I did. Brings back memories of my time before moving to VA

Yeesh. All that energy, and for this?

Very listenable. Not my usual thing - that kind of post-2000 teen angst rock thing. But some good songs on this and it's enjoyable. The rage does always sound a bit adolescent and inauthentic, though. It's not Nirvana! The guitar power chords are a bit obvious, too. The rap is a bit naff. Yet... it's decent overall. I like "By Myself". That's a high point.

One can not deny that this music is for the lethargic ones amongst us, as you are pumped with energy, or rage, the moment the album starts doing its thing. And that is where the problem lies: its thing. Angsty suburban rapper with almost the same cadence throughout the album, followed by our screamer screaming stuff... in the end, it doesn't really matter... A solid 1 1/2* as I don't want to piss off the fanboys, and girls, out there.

Too edgy. Music was alright I guess but not very enjoyable

I liked some songs of this as a teenager but this whole thing didn‘t age well imo.

Shouty shouty drums drums shouty shouty guitar guitar shouty shouty drums guitar

# Playlist track - Crawling # Notes - There are some solid tracks in there. Both "Crawling" and "In the end" definitely left a dent in the early 2000s. - Other than that, I wasn't a huge fan when I was a teenager, and listening to it now, it seems like a very teenager-ish album. - The instrumentals are not great, the raping verses tend to be bland. The calm to angry transitions get a bit old before the album is over. - But in the end, it doesn't even matter.

Overplayed, overproduced manufactured anger.

This is middle schooler music to me. The overdramatic tone and corny high-emotion lyrics come off as so goofy. There's a catchy hit or two in here, and I even think Cure for the Itch is some decent turntablism, but this is just too juvenile for me. At least too juvenile in a way I don't like.

This genre of music is not good

RIP and all that but not for me

Let me start by saying I'm not a fan. I like parts, not the whole. It moves so fast it makes me uncomfortable as the listener. I remember when it was released and it was like nothing anyone else was doing at the time, two vocalists, part rock, part rap, all angry. I do love "One Step Closer", and remember being blown away when I first heard the urgency and the angst they delivered it with. Any entire album in the same vein is overwhelming, he's yelling at the listener for 40 minutes (prime example "By Myself"). The other huge hit on the album , "In The End", is whiny and a bit annoying. "Crawling" got a bunch of airplay and he actually sings parts before the yelling commences again. Truth is the album, beats and music, don't hold up all that well 24 yrs later, I was bored 7 songs in. Groundbreaking maybe, but that sound hasn't stood the test of time, the album is not 1001 worthy.

Not as bad as I feared it might be. Not my vibe but I suppose I can see how it's popular. Rock/hip-hop crossovers can and should be more exciting than this though.

I don’t think ‘Hybrid Theory’ is an egregiously bad album. I actually think the band have some good ideas here, and I think they knew the kind of nu metal/hip hop sound they were going for from the beginning. It’s just poorly executed overall. Lyrically, the songs are amateur and feel like there's no conviction behind them. As if they were looking around the scene at the time to see what sells and went all in with it. While the hip hop elements feel like the kind of stuff you would come up with when you naively thought you were an aspiring rapper in your pre-teen years. And from a musical standpoint there really isn’t much that stands out. The riffs feel extremely basic, horribly distorted (a cliche of many nu metal bands back then), and uninventive; and a lot of tracks have a grandiose feel to them, but lack any real memorable punch to help them along. If you do even a basic scan of the nu metal scene in the early 2000’s you would find a plethora of bands who were more interesting, and far less concerned with being radio friendly, at the time. In my opinion I think ‘Hybrid Theory’ hasn’t aged well. It was overrated then, and it is probably more overrated now.

A little of this goes a long way. I surprised myself by enjoying the opening track, Papercut, but the rest is just a bunch of screaming.

Not for me.

Zuviel Geschrei My December ist ja ganz gut

Loved this when ot came out, but I don't think it has aged well. 2.5

Some promise but I think the vocals are an acquired taste. I do like the softer and more hip-hop influenced moments, but the anguished singing has aged considerably.

Not something that I want to listen to in the car or in the background while at dinner or anytime really -other than maybe during a workout. I don’t hate it - but I don’t like it.

cheesy

Juvenile and samey. Harsh sound. 2 stars instead of 1 because I at least knew what to expect.

Yeah quite entertaining to begin with but soon wore thin and I didn't care anymore. Samey

OK, so I can understand including this album as an illustration of how pissed off and directionless the world was in 2000. The republicans were poised to actually steal the presidency (for the first time) and the middle east was boiling over, the rich had become far too powerful and the poor had lost their voices. That said, its not a good album and its not really worth listening to unless you want to feel that same kind of "why am I even here" that adolescents in 2000 were going through. 2/5

This sub genre never was my thing.

I am not a fan of heavy metal

Surprising to me was that this album was mostly a hard rock/metal album with only a bit of hiphop . I like a certain amount of metal but its not my favorite. And this was listenable for me but mostly unremarkable and straight ahead. The vocals seem to be working hard to sound hard core which just ends up being grating. 2.4

I never got into this when it came out and I was a year into high school. I was still absorbed in Tool, RATM, etc., maybe SOAD. Linkin Park always sounded too polished and poppy for me, and Bennington's screaming never appealed to me. Years later, and in the wake of his death by suicide, I can at least appreciate the album more, as a kind of confessional of his (which, despite the plain-as-day, simple lyrics, I never really grasped at 14). Even still, not for me.

The multiple voices and cuts between them are interesting. But the lyrics are not of interest. Part of the issue with the album as a whole is that every song does the same kind of thing in terms of voice/sound movement. They seem unwilling to actually play with noise/sound disintegration so there is a certain neatness to the parts that are in the screaming/yelling end of the spectrum that undermines them by containing them as a style rather than an edge.

Rock, Rap, 2000 -> 2

Oj, vad överproducerat detta var. Jämför med RATM eller andra. Hade varit kul att höra demos eller mer liveinspelning

I guess I thought Linkin Park was metal? This is like a Rage cover band or something.

Just very "shouty" not my cup of tea at all.

Slightly better version of Limp Bizkit, and mercifully brief in comparison, coming in at only 37 mins. Listening to this I can’t quite fathom how it shifted 12+million units in the U.S…actually, maybe I can.

Haven’t heard this in decades. Owned the cd at some point. I know it’s well regarded Yeah, I remember this. Overproduced. Angst-driven cringe lyrics. I’m aBoUt To BrEAk ok relax bro Don’t forget to add turntable scratching. Some spoken word verses. Then the other guy scream-cries the chorus. Knockoff 311, get therapy I’m actually having a really hard time taking this album seriously. Is every song just angry white dude music? This album has a very narrow niche. Unless you’re a somehow still-angry white dude feel free to pass

Not my cup of tea.

This seems to be the best version of the limp bizkit era of lates 90s white-boy turntable rap. It’s angsty and angry, which I’m sure inspires some people. Every song ends up sounding the same to me and I don’t really like it.

Why did I like this music back in 2000? Oh, I know - because I was hanging out with rich white frat boys that thought their lives were SO hard. Listening to it now, I can’t believe how formulaic and repetitive it is. Plus the screaming… Another reviewer referred to it as “Cookie Monster vocals” and now I can’t unhear it.

I didn't like this when it came out, and I still don't like it :(

Ist mir zu hart und zu rappig

Getting 2 stars just for nostalgia

Bit annoying

By sheer coincidence yesterday I was listening to the Steven Wilson/Tim Bowness The Album Years podcast which featured this album. Steven Wilson gave a one sentence review of the album - A bit of Nine Inch Nails, bit of hip hop, bit of new metal, packaged like a boy band. As I have no knowledge of this album or Linkin Park I thought that this was an interesting observation and one which struck a chord with me. Then, Lo and behold up pops this album the very next day. I see what Wilson means and can understand why this album was such a big seller. I do actually own this album having bought it cheap at a charity store but have never got round to listening to it seriously. In all honesty now that I have listened it won’t be one on repeated plays. It was alright I suppose with some interesting phases but not a style of music I like. 2/5 1/6/24

Music like this makes me feel young again, for better or worse. Especially Linkin Park, who I remember sound-tracking a lot of AMVs on YouTube and Newgrounds back in the day. They were very sure of their sound on this debut. Even if this kind of music isn't for me, Linkin Park does this shit a lot better than, say, Limp Bizkit. But the mix is a little flat; the guitars glaze over the rest of the instruments on this record, including some actually interesting synth sounds. Their songwriting formula announces itself before the halfway point. I wasn't bothered by my listen--it became background noise a few times before I reminded myself to be mindful. Linkin Park is dear to many people (especially in my generation); I can (kind of) understand why. If this genre of music works for you, 'Hybrid Theory' is a must-listen. If not, I don't think you'd miss anything by moving past it.

Slick production but it's just so cheesy and angsty. I know Nirvana was basically the same concept but this just feels so much more...manufactured. Some interesting metal/hip-hop mashups but I just can't connect with the energy behind the songs. I was five years too old for this to have hit me at the right time.

Angsty album for an angsty evening

2.5/5. A bit much for me. But the music is not bad. Although it's definitely a weird blend of genres. Also, a lot of this sounds the same...

Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory is a hard pass for me. The hard rock influence is not enjoyable, and I don’t like the excessive yelling. Papercut and With You are clear stand-outs, being the most coherent of all the tracks, though that is not saying much. I could understand the praise someone would give this album if they love this particular genre. I simply find it to exist in a niche that I have yet to understand and enjoy. All in all, Hybrid Theory is a terrible album. Best Song: With You Worst Song: A Place for My Head

Papercut - very edgy. Enjoy instrumentals, not rly the vocals (don't enjoy the rap vocals much) One step closer - Better than papercut. Enjoy the verse "I find the answers... I need a little room to breathe." Lyrics quite simple. Skip a few to Crawling - haha funny meme song. Rest of its pretty good, nice tension building in vocals. By Myself - a bit better than the rest In the End - another meme song. Unironically pretty good chorus. Cure for the Itch - I respect going more instrumental. Interesting build to the final track. Pushing me Away - Probably the best track. Instrumentals are somewhat enjoyable, and the vocals definitely are on the better side. Overall: not a huge fan of production and musical choices, though it has a few good moments.

Not my thing. Songs are one noted excepted for the dj one.

FFS Blinking Krap

I remember thinking this stuff was so lame in high school. I still do, but maybe a little less?

Linkin Park doesn't really add anything here that nearly two decades of industrial, hard rock, and new wave hadn't already added to the genre. There have even been countless other bands that had mixed these styles together, by this point and this one is a boring as your typical Korn, Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down, Limp Bizkit, and Deftones records. The only notable thing about this release is that had come to the party late, just as it was winding down. Your average suburban teenager in every community had already submitted to a genre that had been growing since the late 80s, and everybody was getting ready to move on. Having said all that, in the end, (see what I did there?), I enjoyed the singles "Crawling", "In the End", and further into the album the songs "Runaway", and the instrumental "Cure for the Itch". Hybrid Theory is a competent but ultimately forgettable album. Probably won't make my rotation, so it gets a 2.

over produced. specifically the levels are bent so much to allow the lyrics to be whispered. this puts a huge expectation on the lyrics but they just don't deliver.

Everything about the early 2000s culture. Highest-selling debut since Apetite for Destruction. Creaters of two eras that exploded and disappeared. The nu metal rap rock did NOT have a good shelf life. It will always be 7th grade in my Etnies

2024-04-12...

this shit SUCKS

I couldn’t name or recognize a Linkin Park song, even if I was told “this is a Linkin Park, song.” It all sounds the same…But I appreciate the effort. They’re another band with a departed soul. And that’s very sad.

This really hasn't aged well. I had this album when it came out, and I'm fairly sure I listened to it non-stop for months. Listening to it now, I have no idea why. It has all of the distortion and volume of metal, but absolutely none of the edge. And what in the world is the flow on those rap parts?

I knew that Linkin Park wasn't my kind of music and this confirmed that. It's a bunch of noise to me.

no me gustan

Meh. Lousy rap, middling vocals, and music that can't decide if it wants to be heavy or maybe a little poppy. The lyrics are so fucking tormented but they feel naive. Maybe if I was in high school this might mean something. This just goes nowhere.

some surprisingly decent tracks but boy a lot of bad cringe stiff
