Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Good lord this list just loves to give you some random British band

I like the spooky, gothic feel of this one pretty well though none of the songs were real standout hits.

🗯 The Cramps warped rock ’n’ roll into something gloriously trashy, sleazy, and undead. Their debut is a supernatural jukebox coughing up B-movie grease and garage-punk grit. It’s kitsch, it’s camp, it’s controlled chaos. ‘I Was a Teenage Werewolf’ and ‘Garbageman’ are the school disco/car drive at night bangers you need, while Lux Interior howls like Elvis trapped in a horror flick. Poison Ivy’s guitar twang drips with menace and humour in equal measure. It’s novelty, sure — but novelty turned into art by sheer conviction and attitude. The whole intoxicating novelty wears a bit over the course of a whole album, but that might just my poor kitsch tolerance levels. Verdict: Essential (if only to remind yourself that rock can still be fun, filthy, and feral) For fans of: The Stooges, The B-52’s at their weirdest, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, horror movie matinees and John Waters’ VHS shelf

Pretty fun album. Good grunge rock.

Perfect 5/10 - nothing I enjoyed, nothing I disliked.

Lord taught us nothing. At first I enjoyed it but as it went on it was getting more and more difficult to get through it.

Cover 5 The first time I listened to The Cramps, many years ago, I wasn't impressed. Same with The Misfits. They just sounded like the same 50s rock n roll song on repeat but with a kid's monster movie theme. However, they can be a fun listen. I didn't know I'd include them on a list of must haves though.

oh! don't think i'm familiar as nothing comes to mind! edit: didn't save anything, but enjoyed what i heard. classic punk or early alternative if i had to pass a genre.

Low to mid 3, I like the energy, vocals not crazy about but fun high energy listen

I kind of hated this on first listen, but the second time around it grew on me. It's still kinda terrible, but in a fun way, like the Evil Dead or something. It's very cinematic and groovy, like a spookier Dick Dale.

3.5 rounded down pretty solid overall, but there’s a certain quality to his vocals that i’m not a fan of highlights: garbageman, sunglasses after dark, tear it up (mar 3 2026)

Dude on the cover looks like a high elf from the Elder Scrolls series

I definitely enjoyed listening to this album. I probably would never have despite having heard of them.

Adam Bomb but worse

Officially deciding that I don't need to listen to a whole album if I'm bored and have heard enough to get a full vibe, maybe at least 3 songs. This album has a very specific spooky punk vibe that I don't know if I'm feeling on a Friday afternoon. But very unique and I bet the live show in the 80s would've been electric.

Good album. Not something I would listen to normally

Now I know where the aithors of Lost Boys drew inspiration from. I appreciate the idea that this album is coming from, rockabilly, surf music and punk with teenagers as vampires bit, oh boy, same riffs and the singing gets so boring. I mean itvis an ok album but it is kinda cringe. 3/5

It pains me

That was alright, though it ended kinda soft.

Vibe-record. Nothing stood out but I dig the feel of it. Perfect to have on in the background while drinking some beers or something like that. Or just a good live music album. I've also found the genre "Psychobilly" which i really apparently dig. Mid 3 for being vibey.

I found this one a little boring. The guitar tones were cool, I liked the fuzz guitar panned left mixed with the cleaner guitar on the right, but the vocals were just so-so. Every song kind of sounded the same too. Yeah, idk it is fine. They kinda sound like the B-52s on some songs but not as fun. Mid 3.

I liked the covers which is uhhhh, not a good sign. This is one of the most ok punk albums. It’s like they chose the most ok sound every time. They tell jokes that aren’t funny. It mostly songs ok.

solid punk album, hadn't heard of these guys

Not for me, but I get it

Elvis revivalists with punk rock energy, swampy twang, spooky horny vibes, and a decent sense of humor. The guitar sounds are great, they nail the tremelo/reverb surf style. A few songs make for a fun addition to a playlist but listening to a full album starts to feel like wearing your halloween costume into November.

Bra men tråkigt.

Rockabilly

Decent listen. Mostly forgettable punk. About the 100th album from this era that sounds like this on this list

Kooky campy fun.

That was fun. Early punk with surf sound influencers. Lots of three minutes and get out songs. Good time

played out loud full volume in the office very camp

Rockabilly is not really my style, but I can see how there are influences coming from this genre in the other types of music I like or have listened to. So not my favorite, but cool to try something new to me.

That was interesting. Not unpleasant. A good, solid, light rock album.

Like all Rockabilly I like it, but it gets very goofy and repetitive. I think I’m around. 3.5 on this but I’ll round down to three because of the same-yness

This is alright. 80s mixed with Elvis impersonation.

dom är ju coola och jag kan ha lite tid för det här distade 60 tals psych-rockabilly grejen

This was okay. Punk, but a bit flat on me. I like punk overall, but yhis didn't catch me.

Probably 3.5ish?

I appreciate their direction and creating such a niche and unique sound with Songs the Lord Taught Us.

Super interesting music that I've never used to listen to. Almost every song sounds like a novelty but not in a bad way

Interesting mix of rockabilly, surf rock and punk. The album starts to drag a little bit, but overall it’s good. 3/5 Might listen again

It's not as bad as the title would suggest. Just a mid album I will probably not return to. 3/5

Some fun rockabilly with a slight post punk edge. It wears thin after a whole album, but it's a good time in smaller doses.

This was really interesting. A perfect balance of Dead Kennedys and The Clash

Kind of like if the B-52s married the Ramones. Only now that I've typed that, it sounds way more interesting than the songs on this particular album.

A fun album, but I was feeling sick when I listened, which dampened my enjoyment. A high 3, because I really dig the campy horror theme and probably would rate it higher if I weren’t nauseous Favorite: Zombie Dance 3.5

The sneering punk take on rockabilly put me off at first, but I came around as the album went on. It helps that "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" is such a banger. Still, it almost felt like a novelty record. I'm not sure I'll revisit.

This was a pretty fun throwback to my earliest days with alternative/goth/punk bands. It's got some groovy music and campy lyrics and is pretty much an 80s-era period piece. But still easy and fun enough for a couple enjoyable run throughs.

Yeah I like this one a lot

Though a bit predictable at times, a decent mix of genres.

Liked a lot of it but most of the album didn't grip me. Garbage man slaps

Quite liked it, would probably listen again (particularly to some of their other stuff)

Surprisingly smart rocker. Good mix lyrics and music

Good, but far from great. The fact that the album's Wikipedia article is only two sentences says a lot about its "greatness".

Didn't dislike a single second! Also can't remember a single second though :(

3.3 2x fun but not memorable

it was ok.

Good early punk album. Enjoyable enough without having an outstanding track on here.

I’d heard Teenage Werewolf before as it was in the soundtrack to Stranger Things (don’t remember which season) so I expected this album to be two things. Weird and raw. It was. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it.

IT was different, but fun.

I'm not sure why I didn't like this more. I listened to it a few times but I found it difficult to listen to at any volume. 2.5

Kind of a novel sound. Taking some of the goofier punk elements and sending it straight into rockabilly. I'm not sure if it was an influence, but I feel like Jello Biafra and Dead Kennedies took a bit of this into making their sound--maybe not this album as they DK was already around at this point, but maybe earlier stuff? Not clear on timeline there, but some affinity. The raw, screechy guitar sound really works for this kind of punk. I'm not sure I'll listen to this a lot, but may go back to in the future. 3.4

Okay, the rockabilly elements are really not my thing

Elvis would have been a lot more interesting as a punk rocker.

I really enjoyed the album. Somewhere in between the Clash and the B52's.

Rockabilly punk? Kinda B52 esque? Fun

the cramps are certainly a lot of fun if only in the smallest of doses. i wouldn’t choose to listen to a full album of theirs like this but i enjoy the individual songs. fav tracks: tv set; i was a teenage werewolf

Fine garage rock that I would probably like a lot more if it weren’t tainted by being a favorite of an evil ex.

I liked this more than I thought I would.

Better than I expected. Fun energy. Not going to return to this

Listened Before? N I learned about these guys and their scene today. Fascinating stuff. Good music too. Love the kitsch. Great. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: I Was a Teenage Werewolf

Can definitely hear the Mothers of Invention influence. Fever is such a classic. Did not care for the rest of their sound.

Classic Cramps.

Reminded me a bit of the B-52s. Not sure how much of an influence they were on each other but feel like they were drawing from a similar well. I liked this more than I expected from my initial reaction. I feel a lot of influence from old school rock and roll. Still probably not my favorite style of music, but worth a listen with some fun tracks on there. I particularly enjoyed their cover of "Fever".

The Doors on sertraline

The Foundation for the music I loved as a teenager and so I have to give it a three. Fun, chaotic, goofy. Faves: i really like the first two-three song run

Punk rock. Did not really grab me apart from one song. Stand-out: I'm Cramped

Aika hyvää punk rällätystä hyvin rasittavavääni tällä melkeen vetää vertoja eräälle helluntaialsis seurskuntaliasellebjoka samassa kerroksessa asuu hoilottaa jumalan ylistystä jatkuvasti huonolla äänrllään. Samaa tässö albumissaz mutta en vihaa ketäänz, olen jeesukseksi ryhtynyt. Ja vielö huonoista puhelimn kaiuttimidta täysillä musiikki. Huono kuulo.

Garage aesthetic A touch of rockabilly Makes fun, no frills rock

Minimalist surf punk rockabilly etc

Had its moments but just *slightly* too annoying.

норм, но не зашло

Kind of like Insane Clown Posse, I enjoy talking about it way more than listening to it.

I’m getting a wannabe Misfits vibe from this band. It’s probably the similar horror aesthetic. To be fair, there are probably other punk rock bands I ended up preferring over these guys. Stuff from the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag that came up around the same time. I think it has to do with the psychobilly part of the album. I can’t tell if I find it annoying or not. It just leads to fast-paced music with a lot of loud noises. And as someone who actually like his hard rock and metal, it takes a lot to make me uncomfortable at loud noises. Some of the tracks are fun, though, such as Strychnine and The Mad Daddy. And I do like me some early 80’s punk, so this one just turned out to be okay. But really, I think I just want the inevitable Misfits album. Favorite track: The Mad Daddy Other hits: I Was A Teenage Werewolf, Strychnine, Zombie Dance, Mystery Plane, TV Set, What’s Behind the Mask

1 cramps song is very fun, 18 cramps songs is toooo many

It's fun, and full-on, and energetic and reminds me of skateboarding as a youth.

Some of it’s alright but his voice is annoying isn’t it

Cool record. good energy and songs from start to finish.

The Cramps twist and distort Elvis-style rock ‘n’ roll in a similar way that The B-52’s distort surf rock. They get pretty raw too. I had fun with this and I’d be down to hear another from them.

Nice album of what I believe is probably one of the earliest psychobilly releases. It's never been a niche that I've particularly found myself interested in, but I know that the influence has spread to some interesting areas- like I feel that Mastodon actually has a little bit of that sound in their early records, and that might be the most popular band to have some of this very specific genre. I could be totally wrong though and missing a bigger act. Maybe a little bit of the Misfits? I want to give it a 2 but it's just high enough for a round up to a 3. It's funny and a cool sound.

Lots of manic, punky, relentless up-beat energy to this. Like the B52's, but a bit darker and more kitsch. It's good to get an album like this, if only to learn more about the deeper, niche layers of particular genres. I now have an understanding of 'psychobilly' and 'garage-trash'. It's good. It's FUN. It's so specific though, I don't think you could easily return to it with any great regularity.

Pscho rockabilly goth weirdness. I find the guitar sound really badly produced. Not for me but it carves a distinctive musical niche...

Almost surfin' bird turf!

Album 659 of 1001 The Cramps - Songs The Lord Taught Us (1980) Rating : 3.5 / 5 Psychobilly. The blending of punk rock with rockabilly and garage rock. That's a new one for me. Good listen. Notable tracks are "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" and a cover of "Fever".

weird and worth a listen

sp00ky garage rock! Kinda fun, kinda not for me.

January 12, 2025 HL: "Garbageman", "Teenage Werewolf", "Fever" An album I will perhaps appreciate more over time, although the ghoulish lyrics grabbed me from the get-go. Some nice Duane Eddy/Venture-like guitar in the middle of the album

Not my jam but well produced and good musicianship

Pretty good punkish music. I have heard of them but never heard their work. The lyrics are excellent, I really enjoyed them and the delivery is very interesting sort of theatrical. This was a fun album to listen to and I'm sure I will listen to it again maybe around Halloween, it has that kind of vibe to me.

A classic record from a classic band. The punk/psychobilly blended genre has a great sound. It's never grabbed me the way other things adjacent to it has, but it's a good time and a good vibe for sure.

Love the punk vibe but a bit too repetitive

I’ve actually got some leg cramp right now… you could say I’m cramped…. Cramps are kinda like kiss in the way they’re mainly out for the aesthetic and if I want the spooky aesthetic I’d rather listen to agents of fortune by blue öyster cult. Also I am a teenage werewolf is one of those hits that I’m not a huge fan of. One thing I do appreciate is the fact that with their style you can see they have a respect for both rockabilly and Proto punk with their style. Like I completely forgot about the sonics before seeing this album again, I wanna revisit that album now.

Pretty uneventful.

Vampire Dick Dale

Absolutely essential record from a completely innessential genre.

Surprisingly good.

Mediocre

I find this music rather silly, annoying, and musically uninteresting. But I guess it has some charm.

I know in certain places this would be blasphemy but The Cramps have never really done it for me. Kind of of once you've heard one you've heard them all. This record did nothing to change my mind. The only thing that saved it is their reputation as a live act

Var en form for punk men har lidt svært ved at placere det. Der var nogle punkede covers af gamle rockklassikere der var meget fede. Modsat deep purple var det meget hook-baseret. Næsten umuligt at høre vokalen. Ved ikke hvor godt på album men sikkert super fedt at være til livekoncert med

Hillbilly Halloween punk. A bit niche, but breezed by.

Cool vibe, but it wears thin. Yet somehow many, many bands still tried to steal their thing. This is all about individual songs. As an album, it's average at best. "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" is my favorite.

It was alright. I liked a decent bit of the instrumentals, but the vocals dragged the whole thing. The album blends together a lot but not in a good way, it feels very repetitive.

A slightly worse version of the B-52s. Still a fascinating listen.

decent. peppy and silly.

Not a bad listen at all but I remember when punk exploded on the music scene and this doesn't even touch the sides when it comes to pink. As a fun rock and roll album, great and the cover of Fever was well done too, but punk? No way

3.5 Last song is ass.

Interesting mix of genres, well-executed. Good listen, but will probably not end up in my heavy rotation :)

Pretty boring. Recognisable guitar sound, but very similar riffs. "Singing" was just yelling. I can imagine people like it but not for me 5/10

Pretty good. I didn't know their style and influence.

psychobilly! weird, quirky vocal delivery, songs with dark themes about monsters and such, low fidelity recordings. this album sounds almost like a mix of the dead kennedys and the misfits. i dig it.

Psychobilly is pretty fun for awhile.

Emo B52's

31/10/24 Not my thing, but a fun album.

A bunch of punks got depressed and bought a hollow body guitar... The result isn't half bad, but I will be fine with one listen.

It's fun, but I don't see myself coming back to listen again. I really don't know here. I want to like it more than I actually do. 3/5 feels appropriate.

It's been quite a ride over the past three days. The New York Dolls on Sunday and the Cramps on Tuesday and Beck's Odelay in between. I didn't realize that I was a fan of punk. The Cramps throw in some rockabilly which I have always been drawn to. They have a spooky Halloween feel to some of their songs which seems appropriate since Halloween is a two days away. Good stuff!

As performance art, it’s pretty good…as music it’s not good.

Look, it's kitschy fun. Actually good?🤷 But fun... Sure. I think the 3 is about right, personally.

This group truly has a unique sound and I'm surprised I've never heard of them before now. I'm not sure many would've thought to combine rockabilly and punk rock together, but that's what we have here. It strangely works too, though I'm sure it might be polarizing to some. When you look closer, both genres are similar in that they are generally stripped down instrumentally, utilizing some sort of sound distortion or echo/reverb as an effect, feature fast tempos, and were "not for the kids" so to speak. As far as The Cramps' take, it all sounds pretty raw and a bit disjointed at first. That's by design though, given this mesh of rockabilly and punk that was introduced. It's frantic and a little spooky. Fitting, as I'm getting this album as we approach Halloween. Tracks like "Zombie Dance" and "I Was A Teenage Werewolf" would fit in nicely into any spooky playlist. These guys probably deserved a bit more commendation too, given their influence and reach on early and later punk rock.

I like the rockabilly/surf punk vibe they are going for, but the production on this thing is awful and abrasive. I got used to it by the end, but because of that, I probably won't listen again. I'll just put on B-52s, Stray Cats, or Dead Kennedys. I'm going to guess this gets a very low user rating. Favorite track: Sunglasses After Dark.

This album was released way too late for this sound to be even mildly original anymore. In general just mid, I thought. 5.5 / 10

When goths go to the beach

Not as good as I remember it

This was fine. 2.9

Raw sound and weird energy. Enjoyed well enough

Well, this is sorta rocky fun, not as good as Echo and the Bunnymen or the B52s, but very similar. Could use a writer and some variations of tone and pace.

No surprises here - exactly what you would expect from the cramps

Good music. Garage rock with lots of fusion of sounds like Gothic.

Pretty middle of the road for me when it comes to punk albums. Like most of the punk I listen to, I like the instrumentals and the production itself but find the vocals annoying and irritating and this album was no exception. Favourite song: Sunglasses after dark

Spooky Elvis music. *Heard before

Ok album. Didn't know I heard Fever (The Hangover).

I like the drum intro. This is a lot of fun. I like the jangly rock sound with the goofy lyrics. I wish the words were a little clearer and easier to understand. The energy is great.

Jack White must have been a fan

Important for the development of psychobilly, but doesn't come off particularly well with age. I wish they had a bit better equipment to record and produce the album so it feels more full. Going to the bands' page and learning about Lux and Poison made the whole experience better. Definitely not your average band

A little goofy but the instrumentals are pretty good. Basically if the monster mash was a whole album with better backing instrumentals.

Ehh.. it’s alright. Has its moments.

Psychobilly and rockabilly are silly, stupid subgenres. I’m too much of a Hardcore Kid™️ to even stomach it. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t at least respect The Cramps. And if there was just a shift here or there, I could really love them. The best moments on Songs The Lord Taught Us are the ones that either veer far enough away from the path of pastiche that it sounds actually punk, like “Garbageman” and “Mystery Plane,” or, more frequently, where they use reverence as an excuse to reinvent, like “Strychnine” and “Fever.” I’d say about half the album hits these marks, and with the added layer of goth/horror-obsessed lyrics, I’m satisfied. Maybe not sold, but content, or at least not angry.
Unfortunately, the other half of this album is strictly pastiche, like all rockabilly tends to be. It’s not bad for pastiche, honestly, but it’s still bland, because it’s still, by definition, unoriginal. Couple that with the pretty rough production throughout and the lack of bass to fill out the literal sound of this album, and I’m pretty close to being actually angry. This split opinion is interesting, but at the end of the day, I still think psychobilly and rockabilly are silly, stupid subgenres. I don’t hate Songs The Lord Taught Us, but I’m not going out of my way to buy a glittery hollow-body that could match some thrifted Go-Go boots and a latex poodle skirt, y’know?

p454. 1980. 3 stars Surfer/rockabilly/punk hybrid with a love of B-movie tropes and sense of humour. Points deducted for the lack of variety and the redundant covers.

Decent, interesting to hear a rock album with no bass. Lots of covers on this album which detracts a bit for me, but good musicians and the music wasn't grating. Like the singer's voice.

rockabilly

Psychobilly isn't my favourite offshoot of punk. That said, this was OK. Liked the their rendition of Fever. But I can only take so much of the rest. Fine but not outstanding.

Kind of fun, kind of strange & disturbing.

Ookey spooky Halloween band with kitschy oddball tracks that creep and crawl their way into your haunted house playlist. Classic camp galore.

Good shit

I used to really like these but I’m not sure why. Perhaps I had a greatest hits or something. Some songs are excellent, the others just merge into one. When they are good they are really good, but when they arent they sound a bit like that band Rodney put together in Only Fools and Horses. I think my problem is they verge at times too much on the novelty for me, and they really needent. I’m sure they arent arsed though, they made one hell of a career out of it.

Every song is the same vibe, which is great if you vibe with that vibe, not so great if you don’t.

The only Cramps song I had heard before this album was Goo Goo Muck on the Wednesday TV show. So this is new to me. I liked this album it was fun with funny lyrics from a band that don't take themselves too serious

Didn’t consistently enjoy this. I did get into it for bits and pieces, but it feels longer than it’s 38 minutes. Not sure if it’s the singer or the fact that they didn’t have enough ideas to fill an album.

3 - Not sure, kind of cool but also just meh

Every home should have one.

#42 is an album I had already listened to. The covers are fine.

Didn’t mind this, but nothing special

Rockabilly, kinda fun

While I wouldn’t choose to go listen to this album again, it is indicative of the time it was written in and for those that are fans of this kind of music, I can see why it has been Included in this list. It probably influenced many bands along the way.

Kind of a weird album. Some of the songs were very different then each other

Punk, new wave with some rock-a-Billy thrown in. Enjoyable album.

Dick Dale/Link Wray Gitarren mit bisschen Punk und grusligem Psychadellic Gesang. Ganz gut aber nicht der Hammer. 3-4

It's okay, a decent debut but there's not a lot to grab onto really. Their energy is good, but I didn't love all of the performances. But it was solid, I can't hate on it really. Fav songs: - Garbageman - I Was A Teenage Werewolf

I've always thought of The Cramps as a fun band with their whole trashy-goth rock-a-billy thing, but I've never been able to enjoy a whole record start to finish. This is true of Songs The Lord Taught Us though it comes the close to delivering that experience.

Crampy

Enjoyable, tongue in cheek. Some great singles too

It's the Cramps. I liked it and it brought back memories of the early 80's.

The first time through I was ready to dismiss this as 80's trash. Too much weird for the sake of weird, too much random noise, too much kitsch. But after the next couple listens it started growing on me. I started to dig that psychobilly groove. Not enough for me to throw this album on again probably, but it ended up being an enjoyable listen.

This is solid. I love punk. I love surf rock. I don't like rockabilly. I like horror. I like horniness. Overall this hits a lot of the right notes. The issue is it gets a little samey and is probably too kitschy to listen to with any regularity. Still, it's good to know this is out there.

Spicy blues a la Sex Pistols. Good but it doesen't strike me as as memorable

It was an interesting listen, not what I expected. I couldn’t get too into it though. The songs were fine and unique enough to warrant a spin, but it didn’t grab me and I don’t feel the need to listen again.

Fun but nothing to me that really stood out as exceptional. I can see how they became an influence to bands that followed, but I wouldn't bother listening to this again.

medium funny punk rock

A strange one, but fun in some places

Not sure how to clasify this exactly. It was a little bit interesting and worth a listen.

The band and singer reminded me of The Damned a lot. I think I was kind of expecting that, but they seemed a little... sloppier (didn't think that was possible for a punk band, but there you go)? Even so, I thought there were moments that reminded me of early Damned albums. But then there were moments of... yikes. I guess I've gotten old, but it just seems too over the top, like the cover of "Fever." Good, but not WOW good. Top tracks " I Was A Teenage Werewolf."

Reminded me of The Gun Club with that jangly punk sound. But not as good. I guess I should expect multiple entries for a genre and this one (psychobilly apparently) gets another. At times I also thought about Nick Cave, probably more for the lyrical imagery (horror, occult) but also some of the vocal snarlings. Vocals also reminiscent of Iggy Pop. Not bad, but again not as good as the referent artists. Still some good beats to tap a foot to and they do a decent job with the rockabilly thing. Garbageman and I Was a Teenage Werewolf were my favorite tracks. They do a decent cover of Fever too.

Fun album that sounds like the soundtrack from a 50's horror movie retrospective. Most of the album sounds like the same thing over and over, but it's a good same thing (except for some noisy sloppy guitar solos). Solid 3 - I enjoyed listening, wouldn't seek it out again. Favorite tracks - Garbageman, Zombie Dance, Fever (good cover). Favorite lyrics: "My daddy's unidentified / my mom says I just appeared inside / Looks like a case of hit and run / but off the record it's no fun" (from Mystery Plane), "I'm cramped / I'm cramped / I'm cramped/ I'm cramped / I'm cramped / I'm cramped / I'm cramped / I'm cramped / I'm cramped" (from I'm Cramped).

Repetitive and in that aspect very punkish in its delivery. Most of it comes off as raising Elvis from the dead, but it gets that rebelliousness back in his wake, and while it doesn't do much for me, you can still respect the craft. It's fuzzy, noisy, and very slimy, and I think that is exactly the style the Cramps wanted. I think it could've just benefited from either a way shorter run time or more thought put into each individual song. Do yourself a favor if you haven't already, and listen to Human Fly by this group, as it gives off the exact same vibe while being leagues better and still pretty short. In conclusion, average LGBTQIA+ friend group.

Not bad, but kind of feels like a watered down Misfits.

They have good energy. I bet they were fun to see live. The songs themselves are OK.

The first song or two, I was like: This is a fun rockabilly sound. By song 5, I had my fill amd was wishing they'd switch things up more. Not bad, just too same-same. They may have been pioneers of this sound, but it's now been so heavily done by other bands this feels unoriginal.

Lo fi rockabilly with some monster mash vibes. Not bad, but not really my thing - and just too much of a sameness as the album wore on.

Sleazy, scuzzy B-Movie songs abound and how trashy they are - exactly what a touchstone of the psychobilly genre should be. Slap back echo, movie monsters and Elvis goes Goth vocals. Best Tracks: I Was a Teenage Werewolf; Strychnine; Fever

Irgendwie cool. Schön rockig und trashig.

Yeah totally fine but wasn't that fussed. Maybe need to pay more attention

Sort of a more hardcore version of the B 52’s.

The Cramps rings a bell but not sure I’m just imagining that. Rock album from 1980. Quite a decent start. It’s alright but nothing special. So far a 3.

Decent enough

It was weird (but I had a feeling it would be). At times I dug the weirdness (The Mad Daddy) and other times it was a little too weird for me (Mystery Plane and I am a Teenage Werewolf). I appreciated that the music was something outside my comfort zone but it pulled from genres that I could appreciate. Side note...the individuals in this band would be fascinating to travel with and follow around. I don't think I would fully understand their outlook on life and the world, but it would be fascinating to learn about it and experience it for at least a short amount of time!

I'll just be upfront about this. I own 6 Cramps albums. But this is not one of them. I recommend Bad Music for Bad People. It's a compilation of all of their best early stuff. The sound wasn't very good on this album. I know it's supposed to sound trashy but it felt like Lux's vocals were kinda buried. Garbageman is one of my favorite songs.

I love The Cramps for their campy fun. They fall into whatever genre you want to call them, The B-52’s, and The Slits. Rockabilly. Or Post Punk I guess. It’s like they are all weird for weird sake.

This had a fun energy. Weird, but not unlistenably weird. Had some good grooves! The 50s/60s bop vibe was neato in some of the tracks too.

Pretty standard rockabilly song structure but the camp horror-themed lyrics help them stand out. I like their style, marking this album down for lack of variety though.

I might be a bit into this if I was in the right mood, but today is not that day. I got through about half and will revisit it another time - giving it 3 in anticipation

Ganz lustig.

Meh was ok, couple of good punky tracks

super cool but that’s it right? garbageman is the only essential track

Yeahhh not bad, not great 2,5!

I feel like if I would have heard this in 1980 it would have dropped me on my head. Very unique surf/punk/early rock sound but the songs all kinda sound the same

So much fun! I appreciate how they inspired Rev Horton Heat

Not my style but think it’s pretty cool as a whole

Decent but not particularly memorable. Some songs are slightly better than others but it's a consistent 3 stars.

I was not familiar with the artist or album. The music was not what I was expecting from the album cover. It's basically rockabilly with punk influences. It's mostly (entirely?) covers and it's a fine listen, but nothing particularly stands out for me.

Kept losing my attention but it filled time. Good background music.

Belle découverte. Ressemble aux Ramones en terme de vitesse, mais plus original. Belle folie.

треш и угар какой-то, не)

Not my thing, OK I guess but wouldn't listen again

Psychobilly! Wanted to like more than i did. Rockabilly influence pervasive enough in all punk to make it hard to differentiate. Still cool names and some songs get it done

I liked this much more than I thought I would. In the end though, I bet they were far more of a blast live and that was a large part of their appeal. I want to give this 3.5

sembra punk, ma allegro. Interessante la cover di fever

Has that distinct groovy rock feel from the early 80s. Reminded me of some other things I've heard that I know have come up in this project. Another Elvis Costello adjacent vibe album. 3.5

Straight forward punk and psychedelic.

Rockabilly-Punk mit B52-Einschlag. Nur fürs Laut-Hören sn besonderen Tagen …

Some of these tracks were kind of cool, not sure I'd listen again.

Not what I was expecting from the title but actually although it didn't rock my world it was better than I was expecting! Abrasive punk rock, maybe I'm just a bit worn down by it after the Germs yesterday, but, meh.

I'm not a big post-punk guy, but this one kind of grew on me. Some of the beats were fun and the singing wasn't as abrasive as some similar bands. Still not something I would normally listen to but I didn't mind it

"Songs the Lord Taught Us" by The Cramps is a 1980 album that is a wild and eclectic mix of rockabilly, punk rock, and psychobilly. The album is full of catchy melodies, distorted guitars, and Lux Interior's distinctive vocals. Some of the standout tracks on the album include "TV Set", "Garbageman", and "Sunglasses After Dark". Here are some of the specific things I liked about the album: The album is a wild and eclectic mix of rockabilly, punk rock, and psychobilly. The album is full of catchy melodies and distorted guitars. Lux Interior's vocals are distinctive and memorable. The album's dark and spooky atmosphere is captivating. The album's lyrics are often dark and disturbing, but also humorous and insightful.

If think if you like rockabilly you are in for a treat! If you don't... UHOH!

3.5 “Elvira does Ed Wood Vampire Surf Rockabilly” That what it sounds like to me. And I like it. I’m not gonna listen to The Cramps every day, every week or even every month, but if they came on the radio, I wouldn’t turn it off.

Maschine: Aür Audio Aurora Mische: ordentlich aber doch eher am LoFi-Ende des Spektrums Musik: Text und Gesang erstaunlich düster - wie eine Rockabilly Upbeat-Version von Suidice. Interessant! Meinung: 3/5 (inkl. +1 für das "Fever" Cover)

Take the B52’s but make it 50’s B-Movie “Psychobilly”

So far, I feel like we’ve heard a lot of not well known British punk albums and this is no exception. With surfer rock riffs and off-key singing, this album didn’t sound uniquely different from others we’ve heard before and its influence doesn’t carry quite an impact on 2023 ears. “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” is a Halloween Playlist track though, so I have to give some credit there. Otherwise, not a super memorable album that maybe went on a bit too long. At least it didn’t fall into the punk trap of every song sounding the same.

18 tracks is a LOT. didn't get through the hole bit, didn't seem to build as apiece, lots of 'songs Though I hear things deff picked up by future artist in the punk scenes, and inspired by rockabilly and surf, garage rock

This was great fun to listen to. Love a bit of punk and always good to hear something nice and early

So I listened to this album as background noise and I think it was alright. I think I was vibing along. I do need to start analyzing these albums more so I will do that.

Listened to some, love the first song and put it on my songs that are me playlist "I watch TV"

2.5 - 3.0

This is enjoyable and fun maybe a bit gimmicky but they seem all in. Not something I want to dig back into so it’s a high 3 for me.

Listened Before? No Album Art: 3 / 5 for a quality spooky season team photo. Each band member has a different emotion. Also the band name font reminds me of that used by the Creature skate brand. Had this one on in the background and enjoyed it quite a bit more than I was expecting from the cover art and band name. I will say this one has one of the best album titles I've ever seen. Rock on the Moon reminds me of a lo-fi Brian Setzer -- kind of forgettable. I don't care what James says, I enjoyed Garbageman; tight drum-led song with scratchy / echoey guitar drifting in and out of focus lending surf-rock vibes. Intro to I Was a Teenage Werewolf has that old western honky tonk swang about it. Like something you'd hear in Peaky Blinders or something. A lot of the rest (particularly The Mad Daddy) lost me a bit with its overt campiness, but I enjoyed this album more than I didn't. This is a fine background album and it meets a certain particular mood. I don't love it for a deep listen; leaning low 3 / 5. Added to Library? No Songs Added to Playlists:

But which lord? The Dark Lord? The Lord of the Dance? Jack Lord?

Don't eat before swimming.

what they did in the shadows

It was a punk album but it was fun. Relatively short.

When I saw that Songs The Lord Taught Us had a global rating of only 2.8, I was pretty concerned about the album's quality but after listening to it, It was actually pretty okay. It was weird but it had its catchy moments and could be quite enjoyable at points. Best Song: Strychnine Worst Song: Rock On The Moon

nit so special wie erwartet

I like punk but don’t really care for pyschobilly. Only gave 1 listen but had trouble staying interested

Is this rockabilly goth punk? Because that's what it sounds like. This was different. Not my bag, but not necessarily terrible. It was alright for a couple of songs. 18 songs comprising of a total of 54 minutes seemed excessive. And most of them sounded the same.

Interesting punk / rockabilly

just ok for me.

Fun! Strong 3

I love the style and the aesthetic. The production feels kind of rough on this but overall a fun album.

It's definitely a unique blend of rockabilly, punk, blues and surf rock, but it does get a bit tiring after a while.

Leading figures in the psychobilly subgenre. It sounds like if you mashed up The Sonics, The Ramones, 60s surf rock, and B horror films. They must have been intense live.

Pshicybilly rock på en fed måde

Pretty rockin' and I appreciated The Sonics cover

I had never heard any of the Cramps' music prior to getting this album. I sorta knew a bit about them; I knew they were important in the punk scene and had a bit of a goth vibe. The actual musical content on this record was different than I was expecting. It has a dark surf rock vibe to it. Like surf rock but for skaters, if you will. The production is pretty muddy which gives it a cool lo-fi garage rock feel. I also like how they incorporate some elements of old school horror movies into their lyrics.

Pretty good. Not as much a fan of the psychobilly aspect of it as I am the punk aspect of it though. Good to see Alex Chilton represented on the list, this time as a producer. 3 stars.

Унылое безликое

Un sonido sombrío que cumple pero que no destaca 6/10.

Fun enough

Cool, sexy. Too long.

Didn't give this one much time to be fair. Favourite tracks: TV set

Songs the Lord Taught Us is the debut album by the American rock band the Cramps. It's an early garage rock/punk album that was influential to the similar genres that followed. It was a fun album with both rock and punk songs. Not the most well-produced nor do the band take themselves too seriously. They just made music that they thought sounded good, and I respect that.

A fun and enjoyable garage rock/rockabilly album from 1980. I can also hear some The B-52's influences on this record.

I like the idea of spooky surf rock. They’re the best to ever do it, although I don’t believe they’ve been challenged. They sound like a band Herman Munster would enjoy. Each song is incredibly fun and feels totally original and unique to the band. Unfortunately, given this album is an hour of music, the songs all sound the same. Still though, I enjoyed the entire album so it only scores low for lack of range. 3/5

Decently fun rambling rock/punk. Not something I'd necessarily come back to but for a listen is was kinda cool. 5/10

Authentic sounding garage rock with plenty of reverb. Not bad.

More fun than I'd expected

Yeah. S'alright.

Weird, in a kitsch psychobilly surfer punk rock kinda way. At least I think I liked it, a bit, maybe.

This album grew on me while I was listening, from a below average album to a pretty good one. It’s nothing special, but it’s good. I like the energy, the style, it’s just enjoyable. Not essential (why I decided to give it a 3), but listen to it if you’re a punk fan.

It sounded good at the begining but there is not much variety. Some songs are almost indistinguishable. I wouldn't mind it as a background but despite not being very long it is not very interesting.

It's a psychobilly freakout! I don't know if this is the same band as that song, but this is still rockabilly music which is an acquired taste that I haven't fully embraced yet. Some of the songs I liked but most sounded repetitive. Along with the album cover it just felt like hearing an early grunge band in a basement or dungeon.

Funky punky. I've definitely heard OF the Cramps, but haven't heard their music before today. Nice Halloween vibe in the subject matter. Some solid jams on here, but not much sonically to distinguish this group from lots of other punky rock of the era, at least in my opinion. I dug the cover of "Fever." Some cool songs, album is alright. Favorite tracks: Fever, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, I'm Cramped. Album art: Spooky family portrait spin on a band photo, I like that. Enough style to set this one apart from the countless other band photo covers out there. Really love their font choices. 3/5

Ok punk album. Didn’t get drawn in, but didn’t dislike it. Solid 3.

I think I'd rather listen to X, or The Misfits, or Pussy Galore, or Elvis for that matter...

Sorta grew on me as I listened. Definitely a band you'd love the more you drank. 3.5.

This album was pretty interesting, I really like the song "Fever", but altogether it was a fun album.

It's a fun rollercoaster as long as you don't take it too seriously. It's more like a novelty band really but I think it's the whole Psychobilly-thing plus they were around during the 1970s New York underground scene. Regardless of all that what it all comes down to are mumbled lyrics, muffled recording and basic guitar and drums. Worth a listen as an oddity.

Started off as a bad Elvis impersonation, but got better as it went on. More of a curiosity that something I truly enjoyed. Best track: Strychnine

I've heard TV Set before and like it for what it was, but I was a bit wary about going into a full album of that. It turned out to be pretty okay, though.

Elvis punk. 5/10

This is pretty much how I expected this to sound

Great album for a halloween party.
