Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Enjoyed it

Did not know this album in advance. It sounded quite dated, usually I am fine with that and also in this case.. ..it is certainly an album I would not mind listening to again (it sounds great, especially over headphones). On the other hand, it can easily be replaced by any other solid dance/house UK album from that period. So, hard to see why it is included on the list.

Very Dimitri from Paris.

A nice enough album. It launched UK Garage apparently, though I don’t think UK Garage got played much in the clubs on this side of the pond, but what do I know, I’m 62. As I’m sure I’ve said before this type of music not well-suited for the LP format, it’s all about the singles, but I think you could say that about a lot of 60s albums as well.

yeah it was fine

Not what I expected

This was an enjoyable album, with a housey-jazzy-R&B vibe. I gather from some of the reviews that this album prefigured a lot of UK garage music, but it feels a little dated to me, coming out all the way in 2000. I still like it for the most part. It would have been better had he just let the singers sing and done less chopping up of the vocal pieces. Fave Songs: You're Mine, Crazy Love, Rough Out Here

Chill album, EDM, not too memorable

Variadito, pero secon.

This isn't completely classic in terms of British garage I feel... it's not exactly banger after banger but more sinks into the background. I guess there isn't really such a thing as great garage albums as people aren't creating garage for album purpose but more single bangers for the club. I actually still really enjoyed the whole album to work to as it does inspire focus and productivity haha, but it's not classic enough for a 4. I didn't find any tracks particularly exciting or special really.

I would say I'm glad I hear this and liked the title track Sincere - but I wouldn't listen to a lot of it again. I respect it though!

Had never heard of them. I like it. Some great grooves here.

-Some nice flows and catchiness in "Bandelero Desperado" -"Rough Out Here" is pretty solid. I like that it is pretty upbeat and not as repetitive, and the singing is great -"Free My Mind" is nice but also pretty repetitive

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Introduction, Tired Games, Crazy Love, You're Mine, Hold On To Me Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: This website's user base is always incredibly dismissive of electronic music which I attribute to the daily nature of this generator making it so people on workdays can't just bob around and vibe to an album. These songs kinda need to be experienced in an environment completely separate from the workplace (hence all the drugs that fly around at raves). All that to say that even if this wasn't my favorite electronica album I don't think this is the 20th worst album in this entire generator as the masses have deemed it at the time of the writing of this review. Giving it a 3 for agenda pushing purposes even though if I'm being entirely honest it's probably more of a 2 (again, UK Garage isn't especially my thing).

Felt like going to the house party of someone outside your friend group.

Some of this is great and some is not for me at all

Good background music for a chill party or something like that.

House music huh. Feeling the dancefloor groove.

Also enjoyable

really enjoyed this! it was a tad repetitive but it’s clearly an influential album and i completely get the appeal. elisabeth troy murdered those vocals i loved every track she was on

OG British garage /dub. Never knowingly heard any of this guys tracks before. Bandelero Desperado sounded like the birth of garage/jungle. Definitely paved the way for Chase & Status, even Dizzee Rascal and early grime etc. Actually really enjoyed it tbf. 3/5, cos it doesn't sound classic enough to be a 4

Weird album, but I liked some of the beats/vocals.

This was Ok, pretty good even, but I did kind of find myself tuning it out into the background.

Dance tranquilo. Buena rítmica

Ambiente. Soul. Muy largo.

Digging this one actually. Been kinda into early 2000s/late 90s house music and this fits the bill.

Early garage beats..... good listen!

The album opened with a bright piano riff, but then electronic beats come in. Ugh. Then a sultry voice. By the end, I was ok with it. One or two songs later, some hip hop with electronic beats. So, though this is not in my interest area, there is enough variation to hold my interest, so far. Update: This grew more tedious as it progressed.

automatic gear selector-tor-tor-tor

I remember buying this album. I thought garage was cool at the time. Sincere is a decent track. I think the problem with this album is being confined to a certain sound. It just doesn’t work. I don’t understand the genre. Is it trying to update house music without a thumping groove. I think that’s why this album falls flat. There isn’t a real groove to any of the songs. They try but fail. Plus all the bad singing

I vibed but nothing special.

Pas fameux.

Why is an album of cafe dance mix tape on a list of 1001 albums you must listen to before you die? 🙄

Wasn’t bad but certainly wasn’t good

😠 bad

Sigh. Not bad. Not good. Mid.

5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background

Nice music, but only good for a beach bar.

Yes I like electronic music fine, but it's not that good

It's an OK album. I'm not a big techno fan, so wasn't a hot for me. It is somewhat relaxing and might be good to put on while reading a book or something.

Can't tell if this was one long boring song, or a collection of several all sounding the same.

There are some interesting gems hidden in a sea of noise and silliness. The first part of album 1 made me angry, which is no way to start your morning. Not for me Clive.

Background music that would have been playing too loud at Abercrombie or Express in the early 2000's. Something the kids shopping there never actually heard of but it made them feel cool. Now, its just a little boring and repetitive. Its not unpleasant but doesn't really keep me interested.

As I have stated before, one of the things I like about doing the 1001 albums is a chance to hear things that are not on my radar, even if I don’t happen to like them. However, this album still has me scratching my head as to its inclusion on this list. I am pretty sure I could have shuffled off this mortal coil without regret without having heard this one. Nothing unpleasant, but completely innocuous music here. Weirdly starts out with mostly hose tunes, then switches abruptly about 2/3 of the way through to a poor man’s Marvin Gaye with the songs Rough Out Here” and “Slum King”, which I actually found to be two of the better tracks on the album. Docked a star for not editing himself — this goes on entirely too long. Unfortunately this is often a characteristic of albums released in the 90’s and 2000’s; vinyl limited an artist to at most 45 minutes whereas CDs can go for much longer. I mean, why express yourself concisely in 45 minutes when you can now express yourself indulgently in 65 minutes?

2-step isn't really “my thing”, but it's not actually that bad either, so I'll give it 2 stars...

Feels technically proficient but just kinda dull. Probably good if it's your jam but doesn't really land.

It probably takes a lot of effort to sound this generic and forgettable. But let's remember a lot of people liked this sort of music and its offspring, the Café del Mar series. Saturated consumerism, oblivious to the world in the worst possible way.

This is fine. This is the kind of stuff we all danced to around the turn of the century. I don't recall ever hearing these particular songs, or if I did, hearing anyone ask whose song it was. And isn't it the guest vocalists who add the quality here, not the beats? Am I being unfair? Four on the floor is fun, whatever form.

Ok listening for a little bit but I didn’t finish the album.

Forgettable house/garage/club music with generic R&B vocal stylings. Great for strolling the boutique hotel lobby or maybe cleaning the house. The lyrics are kind of on the cringe side, the music would probably be better without any vocals at all.

Not sure why this one’s even on the list

Never heard of album or band. Low expectations because I don’t like dance music. Piano is cool Ont he first song. Rest is pretty generic dance. Never heard a dance song that didn’t have absolute bullshit vocals. Fired games is a lot better. Cool production and actually good vocals. Cool sounds. I don’t like attitude. Just doesn’t hit. I just hate how restive dance songs are. And they always make them 5+ mins even tho it’s the same riff repeating 100 times. Pianos ok on bandelero. Not much thought behind it tho. More bullshit lyrics. I actually like the interlude a lot. Most normal song yet. Crazy love is ok. The songs with this Elizabeth lady are way better than the ones without her. You’re mine is fine. I like the vocals and the production is pretty good it’s just not my style. Back to bullshit with sanctuary. Another piano on I see that seems to have 0 thought behind it. Just hitting random keys and looping it. Don’t like the drums in this one. I can’t believe there’s still 7 songs. 0 chance I listen to 1 second of disc 2. More of the same with sincere. Just the same bs on loop. And considering this is what Apple says is the most popular song I think I’ve heard enough. It’s the exact same as the rest. I have a score in mind but I will tough it out til the end. I actually like the strings a lot on strung out. Apt name. Finally a little variety. Background production is still generic. Rough out here is kind of a banger I can’t lie. Great strings and horns. Great production. Back to bullshit with slum king. Pretty good production bullshit lyrics. Much more usable piano on hold on to me. Cool horns again. Not wicked long either which I like. This is a fun song. Free my mind isn’t bad either. The best songs on this album are the first interlude and the songs that are way more pop than dance. I’m glad it’s over I’m not going to lie. Even the good songs were only good because they were surrounded by nothingness. Don’t waste your time. 2/5. JAA.

Generic music, fine as background, nothing particularly compelling. But not unpleasant

I always forget how heavily UK-focused this list is until I see stuff like this.

some of this is really ok but the repetition made me want to claw my ears off. So much repetition....

I understand this came out in 2000 but in 2026 you can find hundreds of albums in this vein of music on youtube, they come out all the time. Even before 2000 though you had Metalheadz and Good Looking Records. Just not sure why this is on here.

Ha sido un poco insufrible. Suena bien y las voces elegidas son muy buenas, pero creo que ha envejecido mal. Me he guardado "I see".

If I was in high school and there was a girl I was trying to bed - she's not really pretty but not quite repulsive, slutty without being fun about it, far too much makeup and perfume that makes you gag a little. Vapid and dull, not smart, but a reasonable body and maybe I can hit it and she at least acknowledges me. So I go to the mall and some terrible store like Hot Topic with overpriced trash and salespeople that are condescending and inattentive without any reason for feeling superior to me but that is somehow the dynamic so I buy some stupid thing the girl wort like anyway and the whole time I'm in said store this album is playing at full blast also max AC like the store is actively telling me to fuck off. So I get to her place and she's on the phone and says she's going to do step aerobics but I can hang out if I want and she's listening to this album while I boredly look at her ass and realize how fruitless this endeavor is and smoke a bowl and pass out only to wake up after she left with someone else and my head aches and this is still playing and I realize what terrible choices I am prone to making.

I don't want my 2 to be misconstrued. I don't have the interest or knowledge to judge. I just don't care.

1.7 So it turns out I fucking hate Jungle. 70 minutes of absolutely boring shite. I find it confusing as there are trace elements in other electronic acts I like but jesus Christ that was an ordeal. The only song I could sit through and not get annoyed was the title track. Surely this isn't the best that jungle has to offer? His listen count on Spotify tells you all you need to know.

A couple instances where the music sounded decent, but overall very repetitive and just not for me.

really not a fan of this vibe of music

I thought I might enjoy this...turns out I got reaaaallly bored.

UK was a big thing around the early 2000s with MJ Cole being one of the big pioneers of the scene with sincere the big hit here. The thing is the songs work well in a compilation or a club mix but on an album it just sounds a bit samey and bland which is a shame

Individually, it has some fun songs and beats. It made a nice background listen. But it’s about an hour too long and got very repetitive. I don’t see why this is a must listen ahead of so many others that didn’t make this list.

This wasn't ... terrible ... but I'm not sure who this is for. Not be, apparently.

Too electronic.

4.5/10

So close to being a 1, there are a few parts that would make it a 3 or even 4 star album. But, it's very repetitive and some of it is really weak.

DJ Max music - ok for me, ok for work, wouldn't recommend to anyone I know.

I saw this was House and wanted to completely hate it. However, I only mostly hate it. 2/5

Really repetitive and boring, it's way too long. Spotify only has the Deluxe version and that made me crazy. It's not bad, it's just there, too long though.

Admittedly, I always get skeptical when it's an album I've never heard of. But, I decided there's plenty of great albums I've never heard of so I wasn't going to let that affect my review. Then, I saw it was a double album. Two whole hours of my time?! But I decided I was going to stick it through just like I had every other album before it. Finally I was ready to hit play. It was a little unexpected that this was electronic music, but I'm not opposed to that. Surely this is some sort of masterpiece of EDM . But here's the thing: the album is fine. I read a lot of reviews straight up bashing it, but it's not bad music. There's nothing offensive or off-putting about it, in fact, it's quite enjoyable. But that's the thing, it's good music for an elevator. This is the kind of stuff I'd put on to get some work done. There's nothing remarkable about this album. No stand out tracks, no innovation, no creativity. And that's fine, but it's not something I'd put on this list

i mean, it's fine, but it's also very long

This sounds heartless.

This book really missed the mark with the year 2000. It's like these reviewers were trying to be profound and pick out the timeless albums that would impact the future, but this to my ears is a totally derivative of a UK house album from the 90s. A good moment or two but really not worth it in a 70 min album. 1.7/5 -> 2/5

why is it so long? otherwise p inoffensive.

Great movie soundtrack music. Not great everyday listening.

way too long!!!

Computer music. No life, no soul whatsoever. Man, I haven’t heard anything good in a while.

Everything about this album screams amateurish which is not necessarily a bad thing we all have to start from somewhere, but as an edition to a best of list this feels like someone has something on someone - pictures they don't want released kind of deal. Not Kid Rock levels bad, but close enough.

UK DJs all love to make their songs 8 min long and feature 26 remixes. Which is wild because a lot of them aren't very good.

One and done.

most tracks have a very similar feeling. the vocals obviously change with each singer but overall not a lot of variety considering the length of the album

Album 1078 of 1089 Sincere - MJ Cole (2000) Rating : 2 / 5 This one falls into that electronic soul / UK garage style that leans heavily on rhythm, beats, and atmosphere. The production is clean and polished, and you can tell a lot of care went into the way the sounds and vocals are layered together. For me, it was a reasonably pleasant listen, though it did start to feel a little repetitive as the album went along. A lot of the tracks settle into a similar groove and stay there, which works well for the style but doesn’t always give a lot of variation from song to song. That said, I can easily imagine this kind of music working really well in the environment it was probably made for. The beats are steady, the vibe is smooth, and it feels like the kind of thing that could keep a dance floor moving for a while. I’m sure plenty of people had a good time with this when it was making the rounds in clubs.

Like the artwork suggests, this is the kind of music which I would want to soundtrack a luxury shopping experience that descends into a trash fire. Two hours of audio art is a lot to ask of the observer. On approaching the first hour's end, I've sort of lost track of time. I think I may just not finish it. The sound hasn't really aged well, but now a quarter century later it's certifiably retro, in the way my high school class thought about J. Geils, Billy Joel, or Donna Summer, but not with nearly as much musical depth or historical value as those, I think.

Why? So much cheese! I guess I didn’t mind it as some background noise while working but can’t say I’ll ever go back to this. 1.75

Not my style to begin with and also sounded quite dated... Decent background beats for work. 2.25/5

Nothing about this is interesting or unique, it's just late 90's pop, bland pop at best.

didn't finish, not for me

Didnt love it. The songs were fine just a lil too long and repetitive.

Boring techno trip hop. Nothing memorable

not great

I typically like the electronic records, but for some reason I just felt like I was waiting for this one to end. Maybe it should get a 3 because I don't think I would mind if it was playing in the background, but really it just felt lacking.

British dance music, didn't make much impression on me

UK Garage is not my thing, felt like i was in a mid noughts lounge

Electronic. Borderline boring. Good for reading

Aggressively mediocre

Just not my thing, starts to sound all the same.

⭐︎2.5 正直、集中して聞くのが辛かった。 イントロとタイトル曲はやや印象に残るが、それ以外はストーリー性を感じない、かっこいいでしょ!という押し付けの楽曲。好みではない。

Absolutely snoozefest. I dont really have much else to comment other than this album feels like its meant to be live mixed at a club 20 years ago, or used as a blueprint for remixes.

First Time Listen I think there are some genres and scenes that are hard to bring into modern, streaming-centric times without feeling like you're losing something. I think a lot of this 2-step house albums from the 2000s suffer from this. I don't think a full length album, listened at home on my computer on a Wednesday afternoon while completely sober, is the ideal way to experience any of this music. There's some catchy tracks here, a few I'd probably put into a house playlist or would enjoy hearing on a club mix. But listened back-to-back, with all the fluff and corny R&B lyrics in my face for an hour, I just kinda feel like I'm trapped in a Planet Fitness without my earbuds. Favorite Tracks: You're Mine, Sincere Re-Cue'd Least Favorites: MJ FM Interlude, I See 2-2.5/5

Tedious and lame.

I loved EDM and Techno and in the words of Jason Isbell This Ain't It Baby.

just boring dj music

Not “bad,” but generic, boring, and far too long. It’s shopping mall background music - serviceable, and not something you’ll get too annoyed by in that context, but must-listen? Nope. Started at a 3, which dropped lower and lower as it went on… 2.5

OK tunes. OK album.

Generic turn of the millennium dance music, didn’t notice it at the time, I can hear why.

Was an interesting album to rebuild a koi pond to all morning. Not sure if it would fit with another scenario in my life as well?

Background music

Though I appreciated an interesting mix of R&B, jazz, and techno backbeats, I forgot this album was playing more than once. Of the modern techno this did have a good variety of diversity. But this is great martini bar music, or putting something on where you can zone out and just get some stuff done. It was well recorded, well produced, probably won’t be coming back.

Mais um álbum irrelevante

More coffee shop background music.

Guess it represents the U.K. garage- house genre/scene, I wouldn’t know. It was ok on in the background, some nice sounds, found it a bit all over the place probably due to the multiple guest vocalists, but never really focused on it too much which kind of helped. 2 hr albums, 1st listen unless your favourite act are always a daunting task at the start, so Spotify only having the deluxe edition didn’t help. Not terrible as background music, never going to focus listen, don’t see myself ever listening again, a generous from my point of view 2.5 Star.

Not special. Generic. Okay for background music, especially at over 2 hours. 0 songs added to playlist.

Never heard of this artist before. From the opener I clocked a 00’s British garage DJ/producer. Surprised Craig David didn’t drop a feature. Bland, forgettable. MJ wishes he was Artful Dodger. Why is this an album I had to hear before I died? 2/5

This could've been right up my alley, but instead it all sounds like something you'd hear in a hotel lift.

Too much garage

Early EDM at its finest. And by "finest", I mean that it still runs into the same major issue as every single release in the genre: that of repetitiveness. Live DJs make an improvement on this by fading different textures in and out, but pre-recorded records tend to be huge misses because there's no audience to cater to during recording/production. Attitude is the first of many offenders on the record: five minutes of solid, unchanging, bland, artificial noise. Bandelero Desperado is much the same, only this time the lead shouter (Danny Vicious?) adds his ridiculously drab one-note vocal delivery. You'd think by 2000 that this trend would've died out. His enunciation isn't particularly good either, so it's not like the quality is all relegated to the lyrics. No – Danny is trying to sound all cool, nonchalant, gangsta (however you want to spin it), and it's not working. Most of the songs follow this pattern, including MJ FM Interlude and Slum King. Safe to say MJ Cole's singing is much, *much* better than whatever's coming out of Danny's mouth. Guy S'Mone in the album closer (Free My Mind) also has a great delivery – kind of a Karvin Gaye sounding track. The album could so easily be cut down to a reasonable length containing only the passable tracks with decent singing like this one. The piano line in Introduction honestly rips. I'd love to see more development of that theme, but as it stands, a ton of atmosphere is brought into the opening couple of minutes. (It also reminded me of the main menu theme of Marble Blast Platinum, which prompted me to redownload it for the nostalgia. Tired Games throws a wrench into my preconceived notion of how the album would shape out. Great soulful singing and backing vocals, great acoustic guitar line with subtle hard-cut edits, great brass. Really the only weak part is the percussion, which is so repetitive you almost forget it's there. (No, that's not a good thing. There's no human element to mindless electronic drums.) Crazy Love runs much the same way; it's easy to see how it became MJ Cole's biggest (Spotify) hit. Strung Out - Edit is a great little instrumental, easily surpassing most of the tracks with vocals by having some simple, effective musical ideas that vary a bit. And surely that isn't too much to ask for. 2/5 Key tracks: Tired Games, Crazy Love, Strung Out - Edit

Fine. Didn't do much for me.

2 hours is too long, but it would be okay as background music.

29/01/2026 The more this dragged on, the more bored of it I became. Spotify listeners: 797k

Good background music, although “it was easy to forget” isn’t necessarily the best review, I did enjoy some of the songs though, 2+ stars.

This was ok, as I listened I was mostly indifferent but there were a few songs that caught my ear (mostly as catchy -- some as bad).

I'm not sure what this offers that a million other garage records and soulful dance grooves out there do. I'm not sure it was necessarily groundbreaking enough in the scheme of music as a whole let alone the UK music scene. That said, I didn't hate it, it just didn't push anything new and the hype man rapper was poor.

Not a fan.

made for a different time, a different audience

Beats for a rave

I wouldn't listen to this willingly but I was digital painting so it matched the vibe and I felt kinda cool.

mid dance music nothing i particularly want to listen to

I mean... interesting. I think if I took the time to go through it again I would enjoy it more and it may grow, but generally didn't sound a lot different from other similar music. 2

Not really my thing. Not bad, just meeh

A struggle for me personally to get through, but at least sonically unusual compared to the rest of this list as opposed to the many prog rock albums I've struggled to get through. I think the pacing was always not quite enough but also too much to be just full chill.

Not a fan.

How do I escape from these vocal loops?

I didn’t give this the fairest try but I did listen to it. I can tell it’s not for me and not gonna grow on me. There are a couple of interesting things but it’s not happening. And without being terrible I don’t see why it’s there.

It was ok i dont know how i feel about electronic

++: Tired Games, You're Mine, Slum King +: Attitude, Bandelero Desperado, Sincere (Re-Cue'd), Free My Mind +-: MJ FM Interlude, Crazy Love, Sanctuary, I See, Strung Out, Rough Out Here, Radio Interlude, Hold on to Me -: Introduction 4,2/10

Maybe it’s just an off day for me, but I enjoyed the music lines a lot more than the vocals on this album. The beats were grooving and the occasional jazzy interlude mixed well with the upbeat drums. By the end of the album, it had gotten quite repetitive and, as we’ve seen in the past, there was really nothing special about this selection.

I was fully expecting to hate this, just as I've hated the rest of the electronic music albums, but I didn't hate it. In fact, I kinda liked it. This has a nice cocktail lounge vibe, chill but interesting. For the genre, this gets my top rating. A very strong 2 stars.

Better than most of the electronic dance music we've heard, but I still wouldn't want to listen to it. Ok, in the background at as party but that's it.

Why is it so long, but I feel like nothing was said?

This is an album where I have to see the book entry to have any clue why it's included. There is nothing spectacular about this. A 71 on metacritic, and released in 2000 so not exactly the leading edge of EDM. Incredibly long, and not all that interesting.

Ok I can see how this was probably really influential but I did not have a good time. Really did not enjoy the vocals especially.

boring and repetitive, most of these songs go nowhere and are mostly forgettable. the vocal performances are uninspired, and honestly hurt some otherwise pretty decent songs. that isn’t to say that there aren’t some moments of genius here, as songs like “bandelero desperado” and “sanctuary” definitely grabbed my attention. however, i can’t help but feel that this album is a bit flat, and is missing a certain edge to it. just an awkward, clunky, and mostly forgettable “dance” album.

Det började helt ok med mer garage/lounge house. Sen gick det över till mer generisk housemusik för det mesta tyvärr. Men det går väl att lyssna på

This is like the 10th album (in 200) like this where I can’t help but feel I’m in the lobby of the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach. I guess this project is teaching me the meaning of ‘house music’. Fine for the nightclub restroom - deeply out of joint in my regular, daily life. Too bad too because it actually sounds really good in car. What is interesting in short bursts becomes boring repetitive and grating over its 2-hour run. 2/5

Do you like smooth garage music? Great! I've never really liked garage but at least smooth garage is more boring than annoying. Most of this was just... Background music with electric beats. Mostly boring. Only occasionally annoying. The only vaguely interesting melody was on I See.

Garageband.

Just not very enjoyable for me. I lose interest quickly with this style of music.

Once again the generator wiped out my review. I think it was along the lines of innocuous aural wallpaper.

I'm pretty sure that this was a typographical error and we were supposed to get J. Cole's "2014 Forest Hills Drive." It's the only logical explanation I can think of. Instead, we got 2 whole hours of "Millennial Hipster Nightclub Music, Part XXVII."

Would like to understand better why this is on here. Sounded total nondescript to me and after a while the people I was sharing a room with kept turning it down lower and lower.

Two minutes in and I already hate this. Repetitive noises grind my gears, so consider me ground.

Very sincerely: why.

The kind of gayish electronic music I've never enjoyed but must respect.

This was ok. I don’t know much about this type of music at all. Turned into background music quite quickly. Did nothing to really capture my imagination. Not sure why it would be deemed necessary to hear.

Fue como escuchar un álbum de tonos de llamada de Nokia.

I enjoyed listening to this album and personally for me it’s probably not something I would listen again however I did think of my boyfriend constantly during this album and thought this was very his vibe. Edit: I have saved one song so far and another one but I may delete it

It sounds too generic for my taste, but maybe that's because it was the baseline to different types of electronic music?

If I were ranking this list of Coles, MJ would be below Ashley, Andy and Carlton but would just be in front of Joe. Which is similar to his album, not the worst, but nowhere near the elite level

Definitely a stretch to include this album on the 1001 list. There is nothing about "Sincere" that strikes me as unique or interesting - it's just boring Electronica.

I described a previous album on this list as music to shop too, and the cover art for this album makes it even more blatant. Obviously there’s a need and a crowd for this genre, and its creation is not without talent, but there’s a missing aspect of it that makes it impossible for me. Maybe it’s the years of talent I know it takes to master an instrument, or the physical effort that it takes. I think of someone like Lemmy being physically broken at the end but still wanting to play, versus whoever made this album, sipping a latte behind an iPad. It’s not the same to me.

Not my thing. Beats were kind of repetitive and monotonous. OK album

The amount of dull English House music on this list is staggering.

Launche drum and base, men men med fin vokal ind i mellem.

Day 84 Not one I’ll return to, was ok as background music 3/10 Highlights Crazy Love Sincere

J'ai l'impression d'avoir lancé un jeu console des années 2000 et d'être resté sur le menu du jeu Musique d'ambiance sympa, mais un peu trop répétitif pour moi

Not for me, but it's quite good, some of it is catchy

Sounds like what you might hear in the late 90's or early 2000's at a coffee shop where trip hop is just too new and edgy. Generic and monotonous.

are you having a laugh? are you taking the piss? this and other britishisms to explain my incredulity at why this album was selected for this list. It's not even like terrible, but this is very generic. It reminds me a lot of listening to our local radio station in 1999 when they would have the house DJ remix a couple of the contemporary hits at the time by adding air horns, shout outs to the radio station, and little noises here and there.

There were a couple alright tracks but quite forgettable Rating: 1.7

This is just boring .. sorry!

Not my thing

There is more than one moment of genius on this record, where I can see exactly what others see in it. For me though these are often swathed in vocals that are not my flavour and interspersed with awkward transitions. More bad than good but an interesting listen nonetheless.

Wasn't my preferred genre to listen to. Was not made for me, but was fine for background music while doing other things etc

The album cover looks like a magazine advert for Pandora, and the music is pretty much just bollocks. I defy anyone to tell one track from another if you removed any vocals - they are all so repetitive, and non-distinctive, and the whole thing is so, so long. Not at all good.

Ihan chilliä tavallaan, mut kaks tuntia on about tunti ja vartti liikaa tätä. 2/5

Ei lähtenyt jotenkin kyllä nyt yhtään. Taustameteliksi korkeintaan.

NOJOO. Ei tästä ihan hirveästi saanut otetta. Ajoittain semi-erikoista poppista ja ajoittain ihan hyvää jumputusta. Kai tää on joku brittien elektro-skenen alalajin esittely. Ei mahottomia tunnetiloja herättänyt suuntaan tai toiseen.

This is very generic. Which surprised me since I decided to explore the double album version of this album. Shocker that there could be a double albums worth. I didn’t get through it. It’s just very generic techno

Unbeknownst to most, I quite like a bit of UK garage, so I was familiar with the two hits on this album. “Crazy Love” and “Sincere” are the album’s only standouts, and were the only time I felt a need to give this album a modicum of my attention. The rest of the tracks were, being frank, utter shit. Quite why the creator of 1001 Albums felt this was worthy of inclusion will likely remain one of the great unsolved mysteries of our time.

Waffling between a 2 and a 3 on this one. Ultimately it's getting a 2 as I got pretty bored with it towards the end. It's...fine, but not a genre I love and it didn't strike me as exceptional. Something this long needs more variety. 2.4

No thanks

It's a weird album. It's not bad but I wouldn't ever listen to it again.

I wouldn't say it's as bad as I've expected it to be, but it also... doesn't really belong on this list? I'd have been totally fine not listening to it before I die, really.

Certified mid.

Dated, boring, and repetitive. A weird inclusion. Best song: Strung Out

Pleasant background British club music from the turn of the century, but irrelevant and not sure why it's on this list.

Asså va fan. Så sjuka val ibland. Fattar ingenting.

Some nice smooth beats in a few songs but overall I didn't get pulled in to the album very much. Nothing stood out and I didn't get the feeling of wanting to relisten to anything.

It's a protypical EDM album. He found a good singer in Elisabeth Troy and made a record full of songs that fit the genre and mold. This isn't really my thing and I didn't find it good enough to "get" why it's on the list of 1001 albums you must hear before you die.

Cool vibe and all but I don't need a whole album of dance music.

Way too long. Nice vocals, repetitive, no hits. 2.2.

This was not great. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5

Like the hole burned in the luxury-store bag featured on the album cover, this record left a gash in my brain for want of substance and really anything worth an ear's time. MJ Cole may produce, but he doesn't induce - that is, he doesn't stimulate or influence besides the brief moment of witless body moving. What's particularly awful, especially on the big tracks like 'Crazy Love,' 'I See,' and 'Sincere - Re-Cu'd,' is the posturing of some sort of R&B-suavity which not only doesn't exist but is nearly parodied, so generic and uninspired are the vocal performances. 'Rough Out Here' borders on a caricature of Curtis Mayfield while 'Slum King' is hackneyed take on reggae politics. 'Do you feel the vibes?' I do not. Bad for the body and the soul.

I thought the first two tracks were great. After that, it got boring and repetitive.

One of those albums that’s fine, but once you’ve heard a couple of tracks you’ve heard it all.

Lidt generisk 00'er elektronisk, et par okay numre undervejs

I think MJ Cole may have been influenced by the 1080 Snowboarding soundtrack. I will put Sincere in a 'Music that could be in a videogame' playlist.

so, after listening to this, i looked up a few aggregate lists for the best ""electronic"" albums of 2000, because i was really curious to see what "lost out," so to speak, to this album. while this album did show up on some of these lists, it often sat somewhere in the top 20 (if it even appeared), and there were several albums by artists (who i am familiar with, and do have bias) ranked above this one who are conspicuously absent in the entirety of the 1001 list. don't get me wrong: i don't hate this album. it was alright, and, at times, enjoyable, but it was a one and done listen. coming to this when there's a dearth of ""electronica"" in this list makes me feel... bad!!! mr. dimey isn't the arbiter of good music, in spite of publishing a series of books on the matter, and i agree with the general consensus that this as a 1001 pick doesn't feel great. i think there are probably other ""electronica"" albums from 2000 that could've been on this list instead of sincere (if you want my pick to judge my taste, i would've put broadcast on here instead of mj cole). merits of being on a made-up and arbitrary music ranking list aside, i liked this album as a faux-nostalgia trip for the late 90s / early 00s (i say faux because i was not at the club circa 2000). i was trying to envision in my mind what the club circa 2000 would even look like when this was playing, and you know what? everyone in my mind's eye looked like they were having fun. all to say: this album was somewhat enjoyable (to me) on qualities that are ephemeral and very non-objective, and the overall project failed to impress me as being worthy of inclusion on the 1001 list. it compelled me to do research to try and understand how it got on this list to begin with, and i wound up listening (and relistening!!) to a few albums from 2000 that i liked way more than this. ah well!! such is life. highlights - sincere (re-cue'd)

Dance nonsense

#689. Boring UK pop electronica. 2/5: meh

Just not into the genre

eh. some good songs but most of it was really bland and forgettable

Just okay.

Some of the music in isolation was quite interesting, some of it was repetitive and that goes the same for the vocals. Only lasted a few songs before I had to turn it off. No way I could’ve lasted over 2 hours. Not my thing, probably a 1 from me but gets an extra mark due to some of the interesting musicality.

That wasn't fun

This album did not age well

Tuvo sus buenos momentos, es como la precuela de un lofi pop en el sentido de que puedo dejarlo de música de fondo mientras trabajo y da lo mismo.

Eh, not really my thing. It's fine, but it's too repetitive and not very interesting or engaging for me.

This one is a headscratcher..of the 200+ albuns so far I am wondering why this made it onto the list more than any other. It's not actually *that* bad, but was I think released fairly late on in it's genre's history so presumably wasn't influential in any way - it's a little M-People cocktail house/garage but 6 years or so late...

„Crazy Love“ etwa erreichte in Großbritannien hohe Chartplatzierungen. Das Album präsentiert sich technisch versiert und stilistisch stimmig. Persönlich finde ich, dass Sincere eine ausgewogene Mischung aus clubtauglichen Rhythmen und songorientiertem Songwriting bietet – ohne auf Effekthascherei zu setzen. Insgesamt ist Sincere ein durchdachtes Debüt, das den Stil des damals entstehenden UK-Garage wirksam innerhalb eines kohärenten Gesamtwerks abbildet.

I did not dig this.

I just went from a great 2000's electronic album (Avalanches) to a very generic and kinda bad one, so this review may be more negative than if I got it some other day. Anyways here is my copypasta UK electronica rant because it always applies and if they are going to keep giving me the same album I'll give the same review: "About 200 albums ago I had 2 straight months of 70's folk music and I kept ranting about how it is over represented in this list. Since then I have only gotten one here and there, so I guess I just got really unlucky. Now, I feel like the real genre that is over represented in this list is UK EDM/Electronica/Dance. Is the UK electronic scene really that important? I like to think I know more than the average person about music history, and I am involved in various music discourse, and no one has EVER brought up any of these artists. To be fair I don't follow much electronic music though. I feel like 1 or 2 UK albums on this list would be fine, but it feels like there are 30-40, and they always are the same. Some UK guy no one has heard of in the last 20 years that had one decently successful album (I don't think that applies to this one lol) in the 90's (usually a debut), all the songs have 100,000 streams, and then it is over an hour of some of the most average electronic music ever." Now back to the album: This album is really boring and I don't really have much to say about it so here are some short snippets that came to mind while I was listening. If that is MJ Cole "singing" on Introduction, he really shouldn't. Why does Tired Games cut out like that, it sound bad. Danny Vicious is not good at rapping. I completely zoned out, but I think You're Mine was 6 minutes of a 6 second loop. No idea why Sincere has 11 million streams, it sounds just like every other song. I just remembered Mezzanine isn't on this list and got upset. BUT THANK GOD MJ COLE IS HERE! I am so glad I got to experience an hour of the same beat on repeat. Low 2.

I am too old for this electronic dance music stuff, not that I would have liked it when I was younger. I could tolerate Disco to some extent but not this. 2 stars or D-.

Some tracks were somewhat enjoyable, while others were unbearable. Overall, the album felt repetitive and overly long. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more in the right setting, but since I'm not a party boy, it's a 2/5 for me.

Dull - really not sure why this was selected. Never heard of him.

Cover 6.5 Chill. Didn't hate it.

This is what disorganization sounds like

Il y a une vibe mais bon, assez répétitif, musique de shopping quoi…

Beats were mid and the feats were also mid

R&B style electronica - not horrible, but not my thing.

Dreadfully dull for the most part, with one or two tracks that just deliver the idea that's thinly spread accross the rest of the tracks well enough.

This whole album all sounds the same, this didn't age well at all.

I can appreciate the stutter step drum beats. It’s more unique than a lot of dance music. However, I didn’t find it all that danceable and it was boring and way too long.

House. Interesting, but still repetitive.

Just ok. I’m not a big fan of techno/house/whatever this is. I’ll probably never listen to it again, but it wasn’t terrible.

When I'm listening to something new - especially when I'm not familiar, I'll look at the genre. This record is in the Dance category. I immediately ask myself if I'm in the mood to listen to a Dance record. I'm about 99.9% not ready to listen. But I really enjoy this 1001 albums generator and am willing to try out unfamiliar music. Rating something from a genre that you don't listen to, or don't like, is not fun. I could give this a "1" star because I didn't like the music. I liked MJ Cole's voice - and can hear her talent, but I just don't like the music - in general. The beats were good. Production good...I didn't hate it. It's not "bad"... but i didn't like it. there.

There wasn’t a single song from this album I was excited to listen to again. There also wasn’t a single song I would hate to listen to again either.

Sincerely this was very boring

Great music to listen to while cleaning or just for background music at a party, but the lyrics repeat too much for me to give it 5 stars

Another bland electronic album that overstays its' welcome. 2/5 because I did not actively hate it.

Boring electronic club music. It's inoffensive but blah. I could leave it behind.

this commits a cardinal sin: it’s boring as fuck

Entirely unremarkable house music album. Every song sounds exactly like every other house music song made - same tempo and drum track with boring overlays. At least this album has shorter runtimes for its songs and some interesting vocals. But not much else going on. Top tracks: Crazy Love, Rough Out Here

Not my cup of tea. The first track has a lady singing who sounds super cheesy in the way that she’s delivering the vocals. That sort of set the tone. Lots of electronics, which isn’t always a bad thing, but in this case, it seemed kind of soulless. For some reason, this album is two hours long. I made it through about 90 minutes of it before I said OK I can’t take it anymore. It was enjoyable background music, but not something I would actively listen to.

I mean… it’s too inoffensive to give this only one star but it’s really not interesting. When the only accomplishment mentioned in Wikipedia is that you’re on this list, you shouldn’t be on this list.

o álbum mais "estou fazendo compras na riachuelo do del rey num sábado a tarde" que eu já vi em mto tempo inicialmente eu n tava achando ruim, mas depois tomei ódio

Bbboooorrrriiinnnngggg

Sadly not a collaboration between MJ Lenderman and J. Cole, but rather a stock electronic album with generic R&B singers

some good, some not my thing. a bit too much repetition in some songs for me

The album is not written to connect with the audience. Not written to entertain either. Music wise, strange but academically novel??? There are indeed some key change, rarely used or maybe “weird” chord progression..I can see they wanted to make the innovation not too jarring.. so they simplified their music so we could notice the “difference” more easily?? Logically, it’s self-contained. But I am not really sure about their motivation and where they wanted to lead us to. Style over substance. Overly “minimalistic”. And it is just not good enough to make an impact in a short term.

This album was aight. Some songs were cool to jam along to, but otherwise I was just kinda bored with it. Almost a three, but I can’t even recall anything off it two days later so down to two it goes

I'm always interested every time I get an album from the bottom 20, because most of them are really not that bad. This one is definitely far from the worst of the lot, but it's not great. A lot of it is pointless and repetitive meandering, which does get annying quickly. But there are still a handful of tracks on it that I thought were actually quite good, with a lot of the featured artists being mostly what keep it from being complete garbage.

Sincere Call 999, it's an emergency Beats and Grindah killed an MC Someone take him to A&E Then perform some lyrical surgery I’m sure it was included as Garage was a nascent, new genre when the first edition was released. It’s good to have some representation, and I’ve always liked the title track and Crazy Love, but I think there must be better albums, or shorter albums or less repetitive albums. It’s not awful, I actually found it quite easy to work to, but it is very, very one note and very, very long, the slightly imperceptible variations on the same beat and keyboard sound does just make it feel like one long lump of Garagey-ness. When there are little interjections and variations they don’t always work. The jazzy inflections I think are supposed to evoke sophistication, but they just tend to add to the flatness, the Spanish guitars on You’re Mine feel quite cliche and trite and the Stevie-esque keyboards on Slum King sound unconvincing. Rough Out Here is pretty ropey Curtis Mayfield knock off. There are some good vocals, Crazy Love, Sincere, I See, but some of the rapping isn’t great, MJ FM Interlude for example, but there’s not really anything on it to make you want to come back to it, unless you need some rhythmically undynamic music to work to, so I’ll give it a 2. 🛍️🛍️ Playlist submission: Sincere

It does generally avoid a 'People Just Do Nothing' approach, although the MJ FM Interlude comes close. Albeit he's nowhere near as good on the mic as Grindah (genuinely). At worst, like 'Free My Mind', it's a very painful slice of Brand New Heaviest banality. Many of these tracks feel like the sort of thing AI can create these days. It's also way too long. Do you really need to start remixing album tracks on the same album? Save it for the b-sides! In saying that, I did like the 'Sincere' remix - which then renders the original pointless. Then he does another remix of the remix! Some nice moments. But nowhere near enough to render this a 'good' album.

This isn't really my kind of music but it's relatively inoffensive

Less bad than I feared. A few tracks were even quite nice. However, there was nothing on the album that made me want to listen to it again, while I quickly skipped a few tracks. 2/5

Generic electronica rambling without any structure or original idea. 1.5/5

A whole lotta meh here. Not sure how this one made the list. Not much energy or anything to hold interest.

Was it really that sincere?

iwie chillig aber iwie ah nix besonderes. 2.5.

House, 2step... not my style

Not offensive to my ears or anything, but really not my thing, the "Introduction" song was promising (bit 'trip-hoppy') but was fairly 'meh' following on the rest of the album, on the deluxe version but I don't think I'll be listening to the second disc (it'll put me in a bad mood the rest of the day), not real fussed on grime style vocals, probably a 2.5 but will give a ⭐⭐

Perfectly inoffensive but totally forgettable. There's some nice easy listening electronica here, which is nice contrast to the blast of The Prodigy I've gotten here. But at the same time, not sure why I would come back to this as none of the individual sounds are compelling enough to bring me back. My favorites would be Bandelero and You're Mine.

3/10 - it was weird and really long

had some cool tunes but its way too long! Every song could be way shorter or at least tighten up the tracklist... (2.5/5.0)

Muzak. 1.5

I felt like I was stuck in an H&M in the early 2000's for hours

The first thing I thought when I queued this album up was "Jesus it's over 2 hours long, I hope it doesn't suck." Well, I listened to both disks and while it wasn't horrible, it was a slog that I felt like I needed to be on drugs to really appreciate. So this album is classified as garage & house on Wikipedia. Not something I've dabbled in much. You can definitely turn your brain off and just kinda vibe or lock into work or some tedious task with this on. There are some good beats, but nothing crazy. Hope you like those beats, though, because this thing goes on forever and can get grating after a while. The whole thing also feels very dated. Standouts were "Tired Games" - just for that weird funky guitar bit - "Sanctuary" - had some nice vocals and guitar - "I See," and "Strung Out" - aptly titled with some nice string pieces. Shoutout to "Bandelero Desperado" for those sweet sweet whale noises. I'm a little confused how this album got on the list. I guess this album was some sort of garage/electronic breakthrough or something? There's nothing really offensive here, but nothing great either. Just an album to put on where all the songs kind of blend together as you attempt to chill out. It's 2 stars for me. And also, yeah, what the hell is that album art?

Føles ut som jeg er i hodet til Herman Flesvig, og det er ikke et sted jeg har lyst til å være.

i know there are albums ranked lower overall but i don't think i've seen one with so few 5/5 reviews

Listens: 2 Standout tracks: Slum King The first few tracks have good break beat vibes. Break beat, as a genre, is not something I encounter very often. Good beats. The composition of the album is familiar. MJ Cole producing the tracks with loads of different guest artists providing vocals, samples and skits, though there's not loads of different guests on this album. Feels like proto-dubstep in a way, specifically Rusko or Caspa. The deluxe version is the only available version in YouTube Music, and so I probably listened to variations of some of the songs multiple times. The experience started off good, but it eventually got incredibly repetitive. Dropped to 2. Wholly unremarkable and borderline bad.

Early (90s/00s) electronic music does not hit the spot for me. The techno/garage-y sound is very repetitive and non interesting.

The disjointed and syncopated aspects of this record are incredibly annoying and disconcerting. I guess UK Garage isn’t my cup of tea. It’s strange given that I generally like House. Standout track is: “Free my Mind”

I understand the novelty and can appreciate the music, but still feel like it's falling short of something. Felt a little too repetitive and also a bit long winded.

Some killers init but bare fillers bruv

This is like the definition of background music. I could listen to this all day while working and not really notice it. Some songs were terrible, some were good. Just a strong 2

Meh, it may sound harsh but…music to get your hair cut by.

I like this a lot more than the usual bs electronic music albums, but it’s still bad.

kinda boring ambient early edm

Not for me

Listened Before? N More British electronic stuff. It's okay. Not really my thing. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Crazy Love

Not bad just kind of boring.

Electronic is my favorite genre but this is not essential. Way too clean and shiny for my uk garage, I prefer more vintage. But what I actually prefer are grooves, especially in the basslines, and good chops. And those rarely show up. I'd say listen to Sunship instead Made for a killer nap though

I was expecting something else. Not really my cuppa

It could've worked as background music but this is tepid electronica that tries to be R&B but never hits any right notes. Just so blah.

Really long, really boring…

Radio 2000s

Sometimes the bass is really great. Sometimes the beats sounds really cool. Sometimes the vocal performances are very strong. Most of the time, though, it's just kinda alright… at several points during its runtime it just doesn't do anything for me, plus it starts to feel pretty samey, which is concerning for an album that's just over an hour long. Again, there are some cool things here though. Sanctuary, Rough Out Here, Crazy Love, and Free My Mind are all tracks I actually enjoyed a good bit, but overall... eh. Except Slum King. I fucking hate Slum King.

Tolerable but did not enjoy

Vibed with it so much I decided to listen to the bonus tracks too. It helped that I was locking in coding at the time, so it fit the atmosphere well. Truthfully though I gotta give it a 2
