Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Como vengo diciendo, yo no soy fan de lo progresivo o lo completamente instrumental, pero este disco me re gustó. Sentí que estaba adentro de Matrix. O del Need For Speed. Es recontra esa onda. Para ponerte en la autopista y pegarle derecho toda la noche. Entrás en un transe mal. Hay que estar dispuesto a comerse esa peli igual. Me lo voy a guardar para futuras ocasiones.

some chill, some annoying in almost exact equal measure. drums go hard. wouldn’t mind ignoring this late at night in a crowded cocktail bar with chaotic vibes. generally not for me.

This was a fun album to get some work done to. I don't think I would listen again

It was okay, some nice instrumentals but wouldn’t listen again and I have no idea why this needed to be on the list. The random explicit lyrics in The Rough And The Quick completely caught me off guard. A lot of the tracks are very repetitive with almost no development. The vocals were not great, and kind of annoyed me. I didn’t hate it, mostly my ears were just bored.

This album is an anonymous hour of turn-of-the-millennium electronic music. This was probably used to sell Mitsubishis in the first George W presidency. It was OK, but just OK. I don't think it is a "must listen" album.

An instrumental album with a type of music I'm not crazy about. Less annoying than other bands in this world because there are so few lyrics. Repetitive music is less annoying for me than repetitive lyrics.

Not for me

I'm not sure I gave this my full attention. One of those days. Nothing quite stood out for me. It seems like a weird blend of electronica and early 2000s europop or something. i don't know.

the electronic aspects didn't flow for most of this. more moments of disparate noise than music that gave me a groove

i was so ready to be done with this by the end. it's another one that just drags on for far too long. there are some parts i vibed with more than others and it's more listenable than l'eau rouge but i still find it hard to give it more than a 1. i mean it's not Bad but it certainly isn't something i ever want to hear again

I honestly don’t really understand why this album is considered essential. 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘈𝘪𝘮 𝘐𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘴𝘧𝘺 𝘙𝘦𝘥 𝘚𝘯𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘳 has a decent groove and a laid-back atmosphere, but I’ve heard plenty of albums in this style that leave a much stronger impression. A lot of it just drifts by without really grabbing me. It’s listenable enough, just not especially interesting or memorable.

I liked first song on the album then the rest was just overload

The acid jazz isn't my type of jazz but I still quite liked it would of gave 3 if I added more songs

not bad but mostly instrumental which isn't really for me i wish they had lyrics

Been Listening to a lot of late 90s and early 2000s alt music and idk I kinda vibe with this one more than Mylo. I think we’re scraping at the edge of musical scenes but I did enjoy this listen but I think this is just a sign of scale creep in 1000 albums

As someone else mentioned, the big problem with this list is that they're throwing in albums that barely had time to age, and while some of them stand the test of time, this one for sure didn't. If you're looking for this kind of sound, just check out Massive Attack instead. 2/5

Pretty boring album with not uch variety but i did like the nocturnal atmosphere 5/10 Favourite: Keeping Pigs Together Least Favourite: The Rough and the Quick

Got bored.

Nothing inspiring really, background music

got bored quickly

What is this. What genre is this. What is anything. Is this entirely instrumental?? What the fuck. Weird and I'm not sure if it's in a good way. Repetitive in a kinda bad way. Oh there's a girl nice. Why is there a mosquito in my ear. Kinda boring. I mean I guess it's interesting. Please don't steal my car. Favourite: Shellback Least favourite: The Rough And The Wuick

Podría funcionar como música de fondo... Demasiado exoerimental para mí gusto

It was a decent trip hop album for the first half but the second half was much more of a bore. I was counting down the minutes until the end. I enjoy the cover art. Rating: 2.3

You failed! I can see, in abstract, why this made the list - presumably not long after release when the writers had to quickly decide which new releases were worthy of inclusion. On paper I think this is a fairly interesting and novel mix of trip hop and some influences from jazz and rave music. The problem is that whilst at first this is unexceptional but very listenable, you realllly feel that 57 minute runtime as the album approaches its second half. This would probably be a 3 if it were somewhere in the 40-45 minute region.

Not sure who these guys are, not really my kind of music but not the worst

No fav song

Eeesh, maybe I just wasn't in the right headspace (I was almost delirious with tiredness) for this. I was actually fairly excited, but it was just the most generic and quite irritating EDM. The second half in particular just blurred into one for me. On another day, in another mood, I could like this. But not today.

I’m often a fan of electronic genres, but this stayed too repetitive. It was like being on hold or playing some version of tetris

Another hard listen something I wouldn't listen to again a disappointing 2 stars from me

90s electro

The kind of shit that Jez from Peep Show would claim to have created and been stolen from him. Quite interesting as an electronic album which sounds about 90% acoustic Not unlike Endtroducing, which I think manages to make more "iconic" sounding tracks than anything off this. That said, Belladonna managed to stand out for me despite being near the end - both of the album and my tether - really beautiful soundscape mixed with the heavy double(?) bass. Reminded me a bit of Mogwai

Some of the lyrics on this one were a little wild just out of nowhere Wasn’t bad but also wasn’t that special, maybe if I’d had a chance to get an additional listen in I might have liked it more 2.5

Sounds like Massive Attack trying to do a soundtrack for an Urban Outfitters store

Aimed, but totally missed.

Another one with a clear 90s sheen to it. Found this to be a bit too busy, and rough around the edges, though. Very heavily sample based, and idm-sounding at times. While not necessary, it certainly cements its sound in time. There are some interesting tracks in here, like 'Some Kind Of Kink', and 'The Rake' to name a few. But it's hard to not feel like it works best as soundtrack for Mission Impossible. And while that have its valid place, it's nothing I'd go off and listen to whenever.

If you showed me this album, I’d think it was okay, I guess. It feels a bit like Massive Attack, but more cinematic. It’s a nice album to have on while studying or doing something similar. But if you told me it was one of the best albums ever, I’d seriously question both your sanity and my own. It’s a pretty generic album released in 2000. If it had come out in the early ’90s, I might understand the praise, but 2000 feels way too late for it to be influential. This is kind of confirmed by Wikipedia, which barely has anything to say about it, aside from mentioning that it appears in the book this site is based on (and is apparently better than their last album). 2 stars.

Never heard of the artist before. Very repetitive electronic music with some rap here and there. This is not for me, though. The first song was okay, but after that it became quite tedious. Best song: Keeping Pigs Together.

I dig the live drums and beats but the vocal sampling starts to be grating.

I am now confident that there is an oversaturation of this electronica/trip-hop genre on this list. Which is unfortunate for me as someone who just doesn't click with it at all. It's music. But I just can't understand what mood I'd have to be in to enjoy most of this, especially the first side. There are a couple songs towards the end of the album (Alaska Street and Belladonna) that bring a relaxing, almost mesmerizing quality to the record that I can get behind, but the rest of it... I just wish there was more representation of other genres in place of yet another representation of what is already a very niche genre.

Every song felt like an extended intro that never went on to actually become a full-fledged song. Left me wanting a lot more.

Până acum îmi place mă duce cu gândul la night crawler haha

Not for me

This album was a real nothing burger for me. I had a two hour drive and was excited for an opportunity to listen to this album carefully. And it didn't hold my interest despite much effort. It is totally fine electronic music from its time. There is nothing wrong with it at all. It is not worth listening to in 2026, however, unless it has personal meaning to you.

Not for me.

Strong, but a bit too maximalist for me. I might've been burned by too many nights spent near trustafarians in Clifton, Bristol to enjoy this music.

I hadn't heard of Red Snapper before now and I am not surprised after listening. My wife said it sounds like someone listened to too much Massive Attack and thought they would have a go at it, but forgetting to add the good parts. An astute observation. It's a relatively inoffensive album, but not a standout. Definitely didn't have to be an hour. Onwards.

Another new name to me, trippy acid jazz, lots of vocal samples and endlessly repeated loops, it's not bad, I'm giving it a go, but probably not for me really. I listened to about half of it in the end.

a lot of repetitive sound, which i dont love. not my vibe

Nothing that I could sit back and enjoy.

Meh. Wasn’t for me. 2 stars

I don't think this was an album that I had to listen to before I die but I've had worse I guess

Not bad, but pretty forgettable. Standout song: Alaska Street

Not sure if I should add or remove a star after being ordered to lick the singer’s clit

It was fine I guess. Got annoying in places. It’s hard for me to “get” electronic music sometimes.

2 1/2 It’s okay background music.

Just sounded like sound effects with some chanting and moaning in the background. Not a fan.

Yo esta música es que no...

Fine in the background, nothing special at all. Not sure why it deserves to be on the list. The other reviews saying it sounds like the soundtrack to a heist or guy Richie film are spot on 2.5

More electronica. Sounds like a movie soundtrack from the 90s

Definitely did not like this, but not bad enough for a 1. It's a 2

On the surface this may seem like a bloated, badly mixed, bland electronic album, that makes poor use of it's samples - but if you look deeper you'll see tha it's had no impact nor relevance since it crawled out from the UK postelectronic womb directly into the grave of obscurity. On extended listen, I'll hand it to them for versatility. Through the tracklist I hear a number of very UK-centric genres: electronica, trip-hop, dance, drum'n'bass. Unfortunately though I get almost no understanding of the personality or style of the band. The final track They're Hanging Me Tonight (as well as parts of Alaska and Bella) is what pushes this up for me. 2/5

1.5 - weird but not bad

Add another tick in the "Sounds Like I'm Listening to a Heist Movie" column.

Groupe inconnu. =>2/5

Boring most of the time.

I got into it on this mornings walk, but didn’t really hit any “highs”

This was one of those albums that makes me wonder if it was added simply to fill out the list. I found this album had one or two decent songs on it but was mostly random electronic noises at times.

Background music for several B-Tier movies.

It’s giving action movie soundtrack, except more edgy

It may be worth hearing, as the sounds are pretty and the concept interesting. But LISTENING is a tedious effort that reveals nothing of substance.

There are decent ideas here there but every song overstays its welcome with endless repetition. The woman vocalist is passable but the rapping is terrible. The darker songs just don’t work at all.

Electronic music is so hit or miss for me. Largely, this sounds like a boring score to a boring movie, you know, a movie you can't really bring yourself to pay attention to, and the music just sort of drones... Anyway, its not offensive just not great. "The Rough and the Quick" is hilarious, and (actually really listenable) though! 2/5

3 albums left! Chat GPT gave me 5 arguments. I chose: ⭐⭐ 2 / 5 — “Interesting, but I won’t come back” You might land here if: You appreciate the groove and restraint, but it never quite clicks It feels like a time capsule rather than something alive The vibe is nice, but the album feels flat dynamically Your likely thought: “I respect it more than I enjoy it.”

This is...fine. But in no world is it essential listening. If I was in a better mood it might get 3 stars, but I'm not.

There’s more interesting background music out there

This album is so flavorless I can't even tell what genre it's supposed to be.

When the album summary is just “this album is on the list” I don’t have high hopes. Their aim was off. Just more repetitive generic music. Even the fun sex song wore out it’s welcome pretty quick. It didn’t make me viscerally angry so I’ll be nice and say 2 stars.

Judging from the selection of records from the 2000s onwards that I have listened to so far, the creators of this list do not seem to have been particularly in touch with the pulse of the time - if at all. More than half of the selections from this period feel like odd ones out. Unfortunately, “odd one out” not in the sense of “this record flew under the radar at the time but gradually gained a cult following and is now considered a classic,” but rather in the sense of “wow, it’s surprising that someone even remembers this record, because it was never especially great and time has not been kind to it.” Most of the post-2000 album selections appear to have been included primarily because they carry a nostalgic appeal and; this is my slightly mean interpretation; because they echo the beloved classics the writers actually knew and loved. Our Aim Is To Satisfy is no exception: While it enriches the mid-90s Trip-Hop formula with slightly punchier electronics, later house-style vocal sampling (and perhaps very subtle jazz flourishes), the overall sound is far from revelatory. After all, this slick blend of acoustic and electronic elements, coupled with an overtly “night-time” aesthetic, was omnipresent around the turn of the millennium. (Thievery Corporation - while I personally do not enjoy their work - would arguably have been the more logical representative of this style.) Our Aim Is To Satisfy is a decent album (it was released on Warp, after all), and I do not regret listening to it, but I struggle to see any compelling reason for its inclusion here. Given the recent resurgence of Trip-Hop within left-field niches, including Red Snapper does carry a certain charm. However, there were many more successful - and frankly, better - acts and albums that could have been chosen instead.

I like electronic stuff but this is too heavy on the cheese

this one might have been crazy and innovative when it came out and when the book was authored, but it sounds masturbatory

2 out of 5. Dated with limited enjoyment.

I hate the term "nothingburger," but I can't think of another way to describe this album. Not a bad sound overall, but at this point in the list I've had several albums like this, and this a pretty boring example of the genre. Shellback was my favorite track. The Rough and the Quick was gross. Nothing else stood out.

this app gotta start recommending me albums with more than 2 words pls

Rubbish.

2 stars It was forgettable 90s euro techno style music with some acoustic components. Only moment that got me was “Belladonna,” a surprise little slow number towards the end. It wasn’t terrible to listen to but I otherwise didn’t care.

Not for me, you do you Will I listen to again: 0%

Pretty annoying "experimental" music?

Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Some decent grooves and well produced, but I think I died of boredom 3/4 of the way through. I'm not much of an expert in this type of music, but it feels like a pale version of Massive Attack or Fatboy Slim to me.

không phải gu của tao, i enjoy music with lyrics. tổng các sound nhạc điện tử kì lạ và dài tận 57p

Jedno słowo, cztery litery. Nuda.

Nothing particularly unique or interesting about this one... Fairly smooth, driving beats, but I fail to see the cultural significance, creativity or emotional intensity that grant other albums a place on this list.

This album was half chill, fun vibes and half annoying sounds and vocals repeated ad nauseam, but there are a few moments that absolutely shine. Like the last track, They’re Hanging Me Tonight. If the whole album sounded like this last track, I’d rate it quite a bit higher. I actually just went back through the track list again, and the tracks I had the most issues with were the ones featuring other “artist”. Seriously, cut out the 21 minutes of tracks with features and this actually would be a pretty tight and satisfying 36 minutes.

Not sure why this is on this list. It probably wouldn't make my best 3001 list. Pretty generic trip hop. I couldn't finish it but nothing new or interesting but just okay.

A few good ones, but barely worth your time.

Well that was pretty solidly uninteresting. It should likely be a 3, but I've had a shit week when it comes to albums.

Not commanding my full attention but has some fleeting moments

There's just no scenario in which I need to listen to this music

Prob won’t be added to my playlist anytime soon. Just not my taste.

Konemusa ei ole minun kuppini teetä, mutta tämä on jollain tapaa menevää.

Giving credit to where credit is due, from my understanding of how Red Snapper operates, the synthesized sound they create on their tracks is purely instrumental and is not computerized. That being said, I would have no issue listening to this while at the gym or out for a run, but I’m never going to seek out when and where their next gig is. It’s fine as background music (except for maybe The Rough and the Quick) but that’s about it.

Tää ei oikein lähtenyt vaikka muutama hyvä rytmi löytyikin, silti ⭐️⭐️

listened to this one as it was intended: my car was playing it on the inside while i spent a half hour getting all the snow and stuff off. on my second listen, though, i was just a little lost, like, why is this album on this list? but The Rough And The Quick is hilarious and Belladonna is a great vibe, "They're Hanging Me Tonight" is a great title too lmao 2.5?

Pleasantly surprised with this album considering that it was a recent release and the low monthly listeners. I wish the album had more instrumental than vocal tracks, I found the vocals more distracting than complementing. I really wanted to give the album a 3, but the second half dragged it to a 2 for me.

this shit is not “Bussing” but it does sound… sort of interesting I guess

Video game title menu music I didn’t despise this album and there were plenty of parts I enjoyed. However, once they’d been repeated non-stop for 6 minutes, I was over it. 2-2.5

At no point did I feel adequately satisfied. At times I found myself thinking that I would be embarrassed to be playing this music out loud. There were some good beats here and there, though ("Bussing" stood out).

Fairly boring.

I'm sure this is good but I don't think I'll ever like electronic music that much. I enjoyed Shellback.

Interesting on paper but the execution is off. There's many interesting sounds and pieces of instrunentation, but the songs are mostly too overstuffed with ideas. Sometimes less is more and this album can be a lot.

I’m honestly not sure why this one made the list. Red Snapper’s whole niche is that live-instrument trip-hop/jazz hybrid—upright bass, breakbeats, noir-ish atmospheres—but here it feels strangely hollow. The record is sparse in a way that doesn’t build tension; it just drifts. Nothing really anchors itself in memory, and even after a full listen I’m left with no strong impressions—good or bad, which might be worse. And digging around doesn’t help: even the usual historical signposts are missing. The Wikipedia entry is thin, critics didn’t seem to rally around it, and there’s no compelling narrative that explains why this album is supposed to matter. It’s not offensive or incompetent—just weightless.

melko epätasainen ja kummallinen kokoelma. alkupuolen ahdistus siirtyy kiimaklubille ja lopussa muutama aidosti kaunis raita, erit. Belladonna. kokonaisuutena 2/5

Red Snapper sure is an interesting band name. And I hate to be negative, but their aim to satisfy didn't pan out. I mean, yes, this album was different from many other electronic albums. They incorporate hip hop and, at times, shoegaze. But it was just too forgettable.

At the very least, I was intrigued to hear music from a band and album that barely even has any Wikipedia presence -- this is often a bad sign. In reality, this was fine. Apparently, Red Snapper is known for acid jazz, and while that's not the primary genre of this album, I can hear those influences across these songs. This is funkier than a lot of other albums of this heavy electronic genre, I feel like I've heard plenty of examples of this type of music on 1001, and they're always just okay. Just when I thought this album was going to lull me into a mid-afternoon slump, "The Rough and the Quick" hit with some very horny lyrics. More power to her, I suppose. This is probably right down the middle at a 2.5 for me, but I don't think I cared for it enough to round it up to a 3.

Started as very generic English electronica, but got more interesting as the album went on. Not stellar, but it saved it from a 1 star rating.

Meh, i usually love electronic but this wasnt the vibe

Day685 - the song names are way more fun than they should be

Solid background vibes. I love a mellow acid jazz situation.

Fyrsta lagið, já takk. Hin mun síður, þakka pent. Ekki óþolandi, og mögulega getur eitthvað vanist vel, en þið haldið þó ekki að ég nenni að bíða eftir því.

Acid jazz electronica from 2000 - it's an ok background music as it is instrumental and quite atmospheric for a late night listen. Still, it's not something I would revisit and I wonder again why it is on the list.

Not satisfied at all. Nothing in this is actually interesting, it's just kinda boring, shock value noise.

The Good: One can not ask for better intentions from a band than to Satisfy… The Bad: The aim of the band is way off! The Ugly: The reputation of a red snapper took a nose dive… Not my thing… Did I mention that this is not my thing? Not my thing… And to think that I really liked the album art… 2* just because of that… and the name of the band… thought I should remove a point for the terrible aim… conflicted...

Why is this on the list? I appreciate the real instruments, but this music does nothing for me.

Takie se. Nie jest złe, ale na pewno nie jest to coś co trzeba usłyszeć przed śmiercią. Brzmi jakby mogło lecieć w tle składanek lo-fi. 2

Var sjovt men weird, en oplevelse

I am a fan of electronic music, but this is bunch of electronic chaos which doesn't bring any positive emotion or feeling, no recollection. I only was frustrated.

Best Track - "The Rake"

Vocal loops got old really fast

I’m so don’t with electronic music atp

I normally enjoy these ambient instrumental records but this one, not so much. I was put off by The Rough And The Quick. It was far too thirsty - the musical output I’d expect from a horny teenager - and honestly ruined the whole vibe of the album for me.

Just not my thing. There were moments that I enjoyed but even the songs with elements I liked I found too repetitive. It’s not an album I would listen to again. Fav song: Don’t Go Nowhere Least fav: The Rake

We had too good a run recently so I knew a stinker was coming. Was not satisfied by this bullshit. Specific rating 1.5 Fav song- Alaska street Least fav- the rake

Not awful but does feel like it goes on a bit long. Fairly ambient and interesting at times. Not incredible.

techno jazz

Some of this was interesting, some of it was very background music. There was a lot of variation, maybe too much. I liked the vibe, but it could have been half an hour shorter and distilled the good bits into a much better album. It's somewhere between a 2 and a 3 for me, but it dragged just enough for me to knock it down to 2 stars.

Not a big fan of this one. The Rough and the Quick was kind of good though

Mmm…

Why is every track over 5 minutes long? Why the hell is it an hour long? Why did someone do so much ectasy to think this should be on the list?

I mean it's chill and you just kind of zone out,, but I feel like I've heard plenty of these types

These albums are never my favorite, but this is really good at the style it is trying to be. It really grooves and the vocalists are strong. I think they just get repetitive. However, I went on a 5k run to this album and it was fun. Actual rating...2.5. Liked Songs: "Keeping Pigs Together" , "Some Kind Of Kink" , "Don't Go Nowhere" , "The Rough And The Quick" , "Bussing"

Very repetitive. Boring. 2

Would probably have loved this in 2000, but no time for it now

Enough club trance music. Didn't need this on the list. Only thing I can say is the instrumental songs were better than the ones with lyrics. Got boring

boring

This wasn’t for me

Not satisfying.

Pee-pee weiners

Some ok beats but pretty slow.

If their aim was to satisfy, they failed miserably.

All the way through keeping pigs together i felt like the song was gradually building to something…..turns out it wasn’t. The introduction of MC Det at least gives the feeling the song progresses beyond the original best, but ultimately its when the music drops to just the beat that you feel this has been more than just the germ of an idea. By Dont go nowhere i am feeling that this will sum up my experience of the album (assuming the double negative isn’t conscious) The rough and the quick felt liked i was trapped in looped hell. I stole you car introduces more of a traditional song structure but i still get the overriding feeling that we are going nowhere in the instrumental. Overall it’s not unlistenable just dull. I’d much rather listen to someone like Brock Berrigan

An album where I went in completely blind: to the best of my knowledge, I have never heard anything by them, or indeed heard of them at all, prior to this listen. I liked parts, particularly any bits that leaned into a more reggae vibe and had lyrics (although I did a full on double take listing to The Rough and The Quick), but each track was too long for my liking, and without vocals on many songs, it made everything seem even longer. I liked I Stole Your Car though. It at times reminded me of Massive Attack or an instrumental Gorillaz, but it's just not an album I'd sit down to listen to. Once again, I'm back to wishing for half marks but this is going to get a 2/5

Just your run of the mill British techno band. Never heard of em. They can build a good groove & great atmosphere with the songs but can either get repetitive or annoying. Sometimes on the turn of a dime. Better than most of the other Brit techno on here. Also I have the urge to put together a gang for some sort of heist. Which is kinda like this album: Sometimes I'm IN, but most of the time I'm OUT! 2

Closest to a one star so far. Salvaged from the categorisation of unlistenable by a few cool tracks at the end.

This album is like a guy wearing a velvet bucket hat in a garden bar on a sunny afternoon. He also has Oakley speed-dealers with clear yellow lenses. When he walks to the bar to get another Pimm’s cup, he adds a little funky jive strut into his stride, and smiles at everyone he sees in a blatant attempt to force some sort of communal feeling to the afternoon.

Takes you back to being in a cosmic corner on Cuba mall trying to work out how they can get away with selling what they do. 1st track was ok. But then its the same shit for an hour.

'Keeping Pigs Together' is very reminiscent of Mogwai. The track repeats a hook whilst the backing music moves through a series of nice minor chord changes. Yet somehow this lacks the emotional complexity of Mogwai, and seems a bit more 'bon-tempi' derived. Nevertheless it's a promising start. Shame then that subsequent tracks feel more disjointed often trying too hard to be eclectic. They introduce too many styles, like the insipid ambient-soul of 'Shellback', the jazz attempt 'Bussing' or the bad-reggae, Massive Attack rip-off 'I Stole Your Car'. Amongst the mediocre, 'The Rough and the Quick' manages to be totally execrable. Characterless music and cringeworthy lyrics. The album doesn't pique interest again until 'Belladonna' which has a similar pattern to the opening track, and a fragility that's quite becoming. One of two outliers to an otherwise very unremarkable album. It's a bizarre entry. It's not terrible, but it's far from inspiring or memorable or other adjectives that relate to a stirring of the emotions or intellect.

Electronic music usually gets an auto 1-star from me, but this obscure band at least plays a few instruments here and there. It’s still pretty obnoxious, but there’s at least some effort at musicality put forth here, even if it’s still soundscapey and repetitive. 2/5

Perfectly listenable without being all that exciting.

- never heard of this group before and had zero idea what to expect -- not even any inkling of what genre this could be, which was a fun way to approach the album - there's something vaguely (or not-so-vaguely) reminiscent of the Matrix soundtrack in all dance music of the very early 2000s - I appreciated the mix of organic and digital instruments and effects (or at least organic-sounding to my ears). I feel like that kind of exemplifies the year 2000: figuring out the relationship with and interplay between what sounds you can make with your hands vs. what sounds you can make a computer program (in that sense, is a computer essentially an instrument in itself?) - nothing really stood out to me, though, except for some of the more melancholy tracks near the end. but those tracks were on the complete opposite end of the spectrum from the "lick my clit" from just a few minutes prior, which was a hard left turn I couldnt (and still can't) really wrap my head around. I probably wouldn't listen to any of these tracks again of my own volition, but I didn't actively *dislike* them, either

Sounds more like a movie track, not really bad, but not something easy to listen too

What is this man... Like a third of these songs are fine the rest are...not.

This is a group of really talented musicians. Synthesis of different styles of music. I understand its appeal, but it is still too repetitive and ambient to hold my interest.

2 - kinda cool electrónica

Not offensive but not gripping either. Electronics monotonous generally, boring. No interest in pursuing further really.

Meh. It's techno'y music. Some parts are more house, some more ambient. Nothing really stands out.

Good but also samey for me

Nyt ei hajua edes musiikkityylistä ennen kuuntelua. Menetteli, muttei jää soittoon. 2/5.

Cool album to listen to when reading or working etc. However, the tracks seem a little disjointed. The 'flow' isn't the best from track to track. Makes for an inconsistent mood or tone throughout the album.

Might've satisfied red snapper but it didn't satisfy me

Again nothing standout and not my background vibe either.

Never heard of this. It's background music to a bar 20 years ago, or a scene from a film where the protagonist is in a taxi and it's raining. Pretty average.

Reminiscent of NES music where you have like 8 bars of music looped for a while to make a really long song. Not bad, but pretty forgettable

Muy monótono.

This album started really really strong. But now it’s track 3 and I’m falling off. Brought me back a bit. But for 2000 this feels old already. If this album was released in 1996 or 97, maybe I would understand a little more but this feels like it’s chasing the matrix soundtrack. Also sounds a lot like the music to the background of some everlast songs. I wonder if this is where the sound is sampled from. Man this album is a journey. Sound like they just follow whatever sound leads them to music. I have to respect it and thankful the sounds follow the ones I like too.

This ain’t it for me

Pretty repetitive, not super interesting. Not unpleasant though

I finally finished! It took a while, but it was a great experience actually. I bet the chick on The Rough and the Quick would say the same.

Unlike most electronic albums on this list, this one isn't immediately giving me anxiety. Not awufl.

I really did not like this album very much. There's some cool musical ideas sprinkled throughout, but too often they go nowhere. These tracks felt more like music beds to accompany other media rather than something to be listened to on their own.

Well, if the aim was to satisfy, I think they missed the mark a little bit. Look, I have nothing personal against this album, but that's kind of the issue. It just sort of felt...there I didn't retain anything the second it was done.

trip hop né. meio acid jazz até. mas me pegou num dia ruim, não curti tanto não. achei até mei chato e do nada tem uma música super sexual nesse aqui. doideira.

That was fun.

This wasn't bad but I think it was suffering from recency bias. I can tell it's before the advent of truly modern electronic unless it's doing something innovative that my untrained electronic ears just don't detect. I really am not enjoying the song, I Stole Your Car. It definitely invokes the early 90s on the song The Rough and the Quick, like something from dance mix 92 or 93. I feel comfortable giving this 2 stars.

Kinda mid

I started off thinking I was going to really like the album, it reminded me of Moby - with very creative, experimental mixing of sounds and beats. But unfortunately it never really went anywhere for me like I hoped. It kind of got better towards the end, but I thought most of the songs were too long for what they were.

I dig it and would listen more, it does cool stuff. Not my usual lane, but interested in it

I learned something about myself today. Apparently I really am not an electronic music kinda guy. Was not satisfied. 2 stars.

Never hear the band, album or even one song. First song was actually really cool but not exceptional. Rest is okey trip hop but this is not something you have to hear. I like the style personally as background music tho the breakbeats get a bit to busy for me. it's like a jazzier and more experimental version of more modern mellow electronica artist.

I can understand that this album might have been kind of futuristic at the time, however now it sounds dated. It’s repetitive, and not easy to listen. It’s not my cup of tea and I didn’t find it enjoyable.

Not my thing

More electronic music that doesn’t seem groundbreaking or interesting. It’s not necessarily bad, just not something I would think I would miss out on if I didn’t hear it. 2/5 Won’t listen again

Uhm No

they did not satisfy

I swear I try to be open minded whenever we have a club/electronica album come up. But halfway into the first track they just fade into the background and I don’t really notice until it’s over. This album did nothing to change that pattern for me.

Their aim was way off the mark. Second song ruined a great riff. The same short noises (samples?) played repeatedly with little variance, no story, makes for a forgettable album.

Although I don't think this will get repeat listens, it was pretty solid from start to end.

Not satisfied!

Mediocre at best. Instantly forgettable.

It wasn’t that the music was bad, it’s just too repetitive for my tastes.

Not satisfied!!

Background music that is in parts dull and irritating. 2/5

I was completely unfamiliar with this band or album when it was assigned to me. The wikipedia entry that gets displayed on YouTube Music simply mentioned that the album appeared in the 1001 Albums book with no other information. Having listened earlier today, I can say that I really don't know what to call this style of music. I guess it's like electronic beats or something. I found that some of the instrumental songs had some interesting bits but there was something funky with how they would use the vocals in the other songs. It was kind of like they used the vocal bits as a rhythmic device so it would just repeat throughout the song in an annoying fashion. I think I listened to about a half of this and skipped the rest after my "I will listen to the first minute of every song" rule. This goes in to the I will never think about this album again pile.

Glemte å rata da, huske kje all verdens. Tror da va litt for 90-talls for meg

My boys say, “Noooo!” They’re right.

Another someone dated feeling electronica choice that feels like a result of when the book was first published. This trip-hop adjacent music has its moments, but feels more like background music in a heist movie than something you listen closely to.

Like Massive Attack with zero tact. Or soul. Or self-awareness. Aim higher, boys.

Ahh, Red Snapper--mmm, very tasty! Before the Wheel of Fish landed on this album today, I'd never heard of this group. Their sound fits perfectly in the scope of late-90s/early aughts electronica. It is a decent album, but with repetitive compositions that fail to build, it's hardly essential listening. There are many other electronica acts that I'd listen to before coming back to this one. Standout track: Don't Go Nowhere (which could aptly describe most of the songs on this album 😆)

The instrumentals are ok to good. The songs with vocals...most of them I don't care for or I have things I like about them and simultaneously dislike about them. Some of the better "Trip Hop" I've heard, however. Interestingly, their latest album, as of writing this, Barb and Feather, is light-years beyond this album and I quite enjoyed it. Thinking on this might bring to light what Our Aim Is To Satisfy might lack. Maturity. Time necessary for a band to refine their craft with more immersive elements that doesn't try too hard to sound cool or trendy.

1. pigz - 2 2. kink - 1.5 3. zhell - 2 4. dont - 1.5 5. rake - 1 6. quick - 1 7. buzzing - 1 8. car - 0 9. alazka - 2 10. bella - 2 11. tonight - 1.5

Feels like an album of beats produced for rap songs but with no rapping (except for the 2 that did). I don’t mind instrumental stuff but this kind of music just feels incomplete to me. Decent music for a club, not for sitting and listening to.

Plätscherte ziemlich vor sich hin, etwas zu jazzig für meinen Geschmack.

Seems like 311 and Linkin Park contemporaries, with a lot less singing. And imagine how bad this might have been without with singing. The lack of vocals allows you to focus on the music and the grooves, which are ok - but still locked in time in the early 2000s, particularly the turntable sounds.

2/5. It's got a nice repetitive rhythm in each song that makes for a good run of songs. They are to find a sound or sample that feels catchy without feeling annoying, which is a difficult feat to achieve. Unfortunately my statement was proven incorrect about halfway through with Rough and Quick. I'm all for explicit content but it doesn't really land, kind of just feels like someone found out some new swears and decided to use them right now. Other than that though, it was okay. I wouldn't say it wowed me but it wasn't terrible. Best Song: Shellback, The Rake, Bussing

That's not my taste in music

Album 749 of 1089 Red Snapper - Our Aim Is To Satisfy (2000) Rating : 2 / 5 More Electronica, which I'm not really a fan of, but with a little funk & jazz mixed in, it seemed a bit more evolved and I wasn't cursing it all the way through.

Fine as far as this type of music goes. Not really my thing.

I don't really understand why this is considered essential to listen to? It's not horrible, but it doesn't add any value either.

It's good background music, or good background music when you're jorking it. But is that the lofty standard we seek to attain on this list, that claims to host the most influential albums of all time?

This ones scores low, not for being offensive but rather for not being all that notable. Some of the songs are a videogame soundtrack, others would have worked as base layers for a rap song. Vocals get repeated just a bit too often. The sound also seems to have been surpassed, in fact it sounds a bit too 90's for being 00's.

I want to like it but it keeps missing the mark

There's a time and place for this album. I think it's in the basement of a grungy rave in the late 90s/early 00s. Can confirm the time and place isn't at my desk in 2025 looking at a spreadsheet. The Rough and The Quick deserves a shout out though. Not because it was a great song, but because the content was unexpected and gave me a laugh.

Not for me.

2000 album that felt like a late 90's club music. Very receptive and get into a grove. Solid to drive to. Early syths

Not really sure why I need to listen to this before I die? Two and one half stars.

Never heard of them before. Sometimes reminded me a bit of the later Massive Attack releases, but in contrast to MA, I can't remember anything I've heard after finishing the album.

New band to me. Shit name though. First track had lots of promise and reminded me of DJ Shadow/UNKLE/RJD2 etc. and also made me think the first track belonged in a Guy Ritchie film. However, quality and my interest declined markedly after first track.

Nice ideas throughout but overall quite forgettable

Giving it a 2, it's cool to hear and enjoy something totally unknown and always like anything dub-adjacent. The first half is much stronger than the second though, feels like it drags on a bit

Never heard of it before, didn't find it particularly memorable and doubt I'll listen again - not bad enough for a 1

Found this blended into background music and was quite forgettable. I don’t think I’ll be listening again

Amount of Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Tool, They Might Be Giants, Weezer, Mountain Goats, MCR, Blink-182 albums on this list: 0 Amount of British EDM albums on this list: 10+ (so far) Like, alright dude, we all have our favorite genres and I get that you like this one, but at a certain point you kinda have to sit back and be like “am I being objective about this?” What did this album offer that other, better EDM albums had not? Just include Aphex Twin and the Chemical Brothers and be done with it.

Was fine, but just not my thing. Definitely feels like a 90s album though. 2.49/5

Like most of these atmospheric electronics albums on here, it was fine, but nothing memorable.

Not for me

Been doing this a month now and this is the first band I’ve never heard of, so had no idea what to expect going in (from the cover I expected a Bloc Party style indie band). I was surprised to hear a pretty decent trip-hop album. You have to be incredibly good at this sort of thing for a whole album to have staying power for me, and this just didn’t do it. Some really nice beats and drum work on this, but not one I’ll be returning to. That track with all the vocal samples about shagging was cringe as hell.

It was such a monumental release that they didn't release another album for 11 years on a different record label. Sounds bitchy but just stating the facts. The music tries to be mysterious and funky but ends up being dull and repetitive, coming off like a third rate Massive Attack.

Unsatisfactory. Just seemed to get stuck and didn't really go anywhere, ok as generic background sounds but didn't really stand up to an active listen.

Just another ex-1001 album!™ http://1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie.wikidot.com/album-artists-a-z-ex Red Snapper, a band is never heard of, and doubt will ever hear about again. This album was fine to have on in the background whilst pottering around the kitchen.

Couple ok songs, the rest are forgettable minutes after listening.

Why am I being told to listen to this?

I did not need to listen to this album before I died. Personal enjoyment: 2/5 Relevance to this list: 1/5

Some of these songs are interesting, but overall the album is trying too many different things. It would be stronger if it picked and stuck to a lane.

This album lacks consistency. There are a few instrumental songs towards the end that were really fun to dissociate to, but other than that… Also, the horny song has a repeating yelp sound that sounds exactly like my cat crying for help. I went running to find her when I was listening to it.

Back in the late nineties/early oughts we had stuff like Boards of Canada and DJ Shadow and some of us thought this is how all music is gonna sound like in the future. Instead we got chill lo fi hip hop beats to study and relax to. This album feels very much of that time. It has all of the same tropes, with the use of acoustic instruments, a lot of variation in beats, some liquid vocals, low fi snares. It’s all there. It’s fine I guess. No idea what it’s doing on this list so I guess this is two stars.

⭐️⭐️ i feel similarly to this as I did to albums like Play by Moby: it's very repetitive and the sound gets old fast. in fact, i think i enjoyed this less. it's obvious they were going for a similar sound to Massive Attack or Portishead, kind of a trip hop vibe. some tracks had potential but were just dull. others were just odd, like wtf was with that weird alien-sounding noise on The Rake?? this is yet another obscure/subpar UK music from the 90s and 00s that no one's ever heard of being listed as music we should "listen to before we die." i'll stick to massive attack and portishead, they do it much better

Yeah, this definitely sounds like it came out in the year 2000. I'm just not into Electronica.

This is pretty boring. I really wanted to like this. But there’s no soul here. It’s very empty. It’s not dancey. The vocal samples are tedious and repetitive. There’s just no hook.

I saw "acid jazz" in the artist's Wikipedia description and I got excited for a moment prior to listening. I guess this wasn't totally what I was expecting. I tend to equate acid jazz with the hip-hop side of things (A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, etc.), so perhaps that would explain my feelings here. Not that this was a bad album per se, most of it was easy to listen to with its funky, groovy instrumentals. Some of the tracks run a bit too long, as is the case with most atmospheric and instrumental music. There are some vocal-led tracks but once again, plenty of repetitive sampling there. Not super memorable.

Did not satisfy. 1.63

The last thing this list needs is another electronica album. There’s not enough crystal in the world to make me enjoy any of it. This particular one benefits from me having never heard it before and therefore tire of it.

kinda fun but whats even going on here?

If it was 2000 and a friend invited a few people back to their flat to hang out after the club and put this on in the background, I bet it would sound fantastic. I listened to it in 2025 while cleaning my kitchen, so it probably lost something.

stylish 2000s movie soundtrack

Sounded like the part in CSI or NCIS montage of them examining the body. Unremarkable but some songs slapped a little.

Amazed they got Donald Duck to appear on one of the tracks..

Regular album, no highlights for me.

Tolerable, not my style at all, not something I would ever choose to play

Left me feeling a little unsatisfied Propellerheads would have been a better addition IMO https://open.spotify.com/album/5xbDEJ9xCamw1OSOjaTdzV?si=xPVbNegWQMCT8UGbwTkA3Q

Disjointed meh

What is special about this? Not much. Oh, one of the songs has sexually explicit lyrics out of the blue.

Started with some promise, got bored quickly. Background music.

I’m starting to think that the author of “1001 albums to hear before you die” is a massive electronica fan and wants to subject as many people to it as he can. It’s the only reason I can think as to why there is so much electronic shit on this list. Because who in the fuck would know about Red Snapper? And of course, it’s almost a hour and pretty much acts as background noise. It’s not the worst album, but like… what about this was so groundbreaking to be put here? I put this on during my ride home from work. Do you know how many other songs I could have put on instead? Do you think having the phrase “I want the kind of night that I read about” repeated over and over before being told to lick someone’s clit is vital hearing material? Actually, don’t answer that. Just let this album stay in the year 2000 where it belongs. Favorite track: The Rough and the Quick (out of sheer irony, but because of quality) Other hits: Belladonna, maybe. I got almost nothing else.

Not really satisfying

Keeping Pigs Together and Alaska Street are interesting songs. Rest just ok really 2/5

Доста зле

Lyder egentlig ret godt men den her genre gør intet for mig. Synes vi har haft det her album flere gange allerede

Very boring.. you know it's a niche when the albums wiki page only mentions that it's included in the 1001 book...

Not the most disappointing electronic album, but still glaringly uninteresting. Just. So. Boring. 2/5

Shouldn't be on this list. First half is okay, didn't enjoy the second half as much. One of the songs had really awful lyrics I might give it a 2 because I think I want to. Sorry lad

Booooo I am not satisfied this is fucking boring I liked “Belladonna” I guess.

Didn't know what I was getting into here, but I did not use a private Spotify session. This type of music seems to be not the type you actively listen to, but it's the background at bar or during some action scene in a movie. It's too repetitive to be interesting and not that much different than a lot of this type of music, some of it seems like I have heard it before, it the background, but I think there a lots of DJs doing this. I could have died without hearing this album.

Not terribly boring but still quite boring.

no era taan malo al final

rien ne m'a tant intéressé.

I only really liked Don't Go Nowhere. Reminded me of This Will Destroy you or Panama or something. Keeping Pigs Together was pretty good too. The rest was just meh.

I imagine this is what Tyler Durden listens to. Very early 2000's. As thrilling as dishing out a 1 star is I'm elevating to 2. I think a 1 star has to be truly insulting - this is borderline but some cool stuff here. They were trying something for sure.

I like to imagine this album was made by Jez from Peep Show. Has anyone else seen that show? It’s a British sitcom from the early-mid 2000s and maybe the funniest sitcom of all time (imo). Anyway, Jez is one of the main characters - a clueless, lazy and talentless electronica DJ with delusions of grandeur, and this sounds exactly like the music he and his crackhead bandmate Superhans make together. To me, it’s not that it sounds bad (it sounds fine) but just that there is a general aimlessness to these songs where it feels like keeping ‘the groove’ going is a distraction from the fact that the songs don’t actually go anywhere. they just add increasing layers to themselves as they go on, which is a neat trick once or twice, but I just don’t think these musicians are pulling from a deep enough bag of tricks to keep this interesting for more than a few songs.

In high school there was a group of upper classmen who were all super into Incubus. I worked the grocery store with one of them and he told me he was saving up to buy a turntable set to learn to scratch - he played no other instruments - that shit had such a grip on us in the early 2000s. Thought there were moments of this album that were ambitious and cool - Pigs, Alaska, Belladonna, Hanging - pretty and cinematic and they pulled off the blending of genres jazz, electronica, trip hop, all very 90s but fun. Then there were moments when I was brought back to reality - most notably Rough and Quick - where I kind of lost trust that these guys had a super clear vision for what they were trying to do as a band. I poked around on a few other tracks not on this album. They do some cool stuff that leans more jazz with more forward horns. Overall, the drummer seems excellent, but I’ll defer to the “corner”. Also was inspired to revisit some Incubus tracks, and think their hits actually hold up pretty well - makes me want to get some turntables.

Elevator music with a dash of low grade methamphetamine.

The first half of this album was okay, the second half dragged for me. I'm just not loving all the electronic music I've been listening to lately. Hopefully today's album has some real lyrics.

Run of the mill early 2000s electronica. Nothing special.

Meh, but the"rough and the quick" caught me off guard.

More boring British electronic. You can spot these albums a mile away.

I had never heard of this band before...and probably didn't need to. Some decent grooves here and there but nothing outstanding compared to other electronica albums released that year.

Meh. Fine background music for working but not something I’ll come back to ever
