Reviews (page 6 of 7)

This goes along the line of now how but why does something like this make this list? It's fine, enjoyable enough, but as far as staying power on me, it lacks anything special that makes me want to return to it.

i hate to say it, but this was one of the most bland electronic albums i've ever heard. there was not really anything here that enticed me or i found interesting. it just sort of went on for almost an hour. sort of the epitome of background music in a bad clothing store.

There were many great electronica albums released around the time of the new millennium. Unfortunately, this was not one of them.

Found myself bobbing my head along with the music but I didn’t necessarily enjoy it

There’s nothing bad on this album, but it’s really forgettable.

non malissimo, ma è musica elettronica. proprio non ci riesco, mea culpa.

I'm not usually one for ambiant music like this, I guess I listen too intently but it wasn't bad even if it felt like music to put on in the background. 4/10

Repetitive and boring. Don’t understand what is special about this compared to every other electronica album circa 1996-2000.

did not do it.

This was a bit too weird for me. Not music I very much like to listen too. What was going on with The Rough and the Quick?!?!

It's not horrible, but it's extremely repetitive and doesn't give you much to grab on to. It's background noise. Honestly, the stream for the album ended, youtube queued up another track from the album and I didn't realize it was replaying one of the earlier tracks because it kind of just washes over you like that. This is extremely forgettable. I'm not sure why this would be on here when there are a number of other fantastic instrumental bands that make far more interesting and inspired music. Tera Melos, Pelican, Russian Circles, etc. I definitely didn't hate it, but in context of a "must listen to" list, I feel like I'm being generous giving it a 2/5.

When the entire Wikipedia article for this album is a paragraph about it being included on Robert Dimery's 1001 albums list, how influential is it, really? We call that a circular argument. More annoying electronica. Just because it's played by a live band doesn't make it good. This album is basically a Linkin Park album with the vocal tracks removed. I'll admit the fourth track, "Don't Go Nowhere" and the seventh track, "Bussing" were kind of fun. The last two tracks are just obnoxious ambient pieces filled with ear-piercing sounds that'll make you grit your teeth. 2/5

Ummmmm…it’s fine, but I checked to see how many tracks were left and I was on the second to last, they all kind of started to blend together at some point without much variation.

Electronic-ey beats, some simple vocals

You failed to achieve your aim, Red Snapper. I think had this 20 years ago and it was disappointing then. Very sloppy samples and dance music there’s no way you could dance to. A long hour.

Sounds very typical of early 2000s electronic music. Mostly beat and samples, little musicality. Would be more interesting to me at a doubled BPM. A bit like Jamiroquai, but more Avant Garde. Last track sounds a bit like Radiohead. First half of the album is quite hard to listen to but the tracks from Bussing onwards are a lot more chilled out and enjoyable.

synthy electronic mixes, not bad but not my fave

initially a bit interesting, but ultimately sorta boring

This actually got on my nerves after awhile.

This music is very... odd. I think I'd enjoy it more if it were accompanied by a late-night drive out of the city (or, perhaps more fittingly, through an urban hellscape). The music is kind of dull, but with a hypnotic electronic spin. The percussion creates an almost industrial atmosphere, particularly in tracks like Shellback that have heavy, atonal synths backing a slow, equally heavy drumbeat. The tracks with vocals are very artificial-sounding, and I imagine it would be an unusual experience listening to them live. The bass playing is probably the album's high point – particularly on tracks like Don't Go Nowhere and Keeping Pigs Together, where it's more prominent – because of its clear, central mixing. It acts as the melodic voice when there aren't vocals, and I think that's a nifty choice. Other than the points above, the music is pretty nondescript postmodern stuff. At times, it's almost brutalist, and can get a bit overwhelming. I didn't enjoy it much, but it wasn't horrible either. 2/5 Key tracks: Keeping Pigs Together, Don't Go Nowhere, Bussing

Well the vocals on track 6 was a surprise lol. Other than that, just an hour of pretty good electro hip hop kinda beats

Weird video game music.

I kept trying to listen to this for 2 weeks while listening to the other albums on the list, thinking I was the problem. No, it's just not that interesting or good

Et underligt mix af forskellige arter af electronica. Når det bliver trip-hoppet som på Bussing giver det løfter om noget interessant. Der er bare lidt for lang mellem de tracks.

te wack

decent vibes but too bland

Who decided this should be on the list

Langweilig...

think i’d actually like this more if there weren’t vocals….. may try to rec some of these songs to my brother. might be too out there for him tho highlights: keeping pigs together, don’t go nowhere (aug 7 2024)

Here is a band I know nothing about other than what I can see: the name, the album's title, and the cover, so I'm intrigued to listen (although also a little bit apprehensive since the name and title sound dumb). I put it on and at first I think it's some okay study / work music: a funky blend of electronic and traditional instrumentation, mostly instrumental with either samples or MCs over sections of the music. And yet, as we progress, I can tell it's no home run. The suspicions I had based on the name seem to be playing out in decisions made within the music itself. The thinking around this record seems to be on the juvenile side of its era in ways that reveal a goofy decision-making that lacks restraint when it comes to so-called humor. The cute / funny stuff just doesn't land with me. I think part of that is because I too am prone to this kind of thing "a pun" as part of the artistic output. Let's have a little joke here or something I thought was clever over there. Over time it is precisely these asides or jokey bits that I thought made the work something special I can see are actually weighing it down and have held it back. Really just feels like: A less clever Soul Coughing and 311 blend jamming on joke tunes with DJ Shadow, Amon Tobin, and the Chemical Brothers playing in the background of their practice space.

Good background music, but nothing I would seek out.

Had some cool grooves. It was ok but got boring and a bit too repetitive. Favorites were Shellback Bussing Don’t go nowhere.

I really don’t understand the purpose of this. It’s so repetitive. One star because little to no vocals which is better than bad vocals

not really much happenin for me on this record but liked the use of vocals

not terrible

The spotify listening stats show it all, the first song is amazing and the rest are not so great. I'm glad I've listened to this album, but I don't think I will again beyond the first song.

Not really into EDM

Listen to Snapper (NZ) instead. This is nothing.

It’s “okay” for me. But it’s kind of like a watered down version of music that I enjoy much more. I don’t agree that this is something I need to hear before I die

in Shell Back is the woman repeating "she's gonna get me like cheese barn"? asking for a friend. The entire album made me feel a little nauseated.

There must be loads of great albums I've never heard of, and I thought this list would provide. Instead, we get this. Occasionally chill, mostly generic and lazy. Dated. The kind of album a pseudo-cool posh kid at uni in 2000 would have been into.

The album is largely hit or miss, and then it becomes a lot more miss. Aside from the two songs below, it's all kind of same-ish and forgettable with brief moments of musical clarity. I like the vibes and the idea behind the songs/album had a little bit or promise, but it just ends up falling pretty flat for me. Favorite Song(s): Shellback, Belladonna

Not really a fan of this. For an "instrumental" album, there was a lot of repetitive singing. 2/5

not my kind of music

La vaina ta cool pero la vaina ta rara. Es un álbum pa samples no pa escuchar.

It's never a good sign when there is barely a Wikipedia page for an album. Usually it means the album is hard to find or the fans of the band aren't passionate enough to spend time on one. In a shocking twist of events, this is a group from London, England. I know, I know, try to contain your shock that an English group is given deference in this book. I have gotten a lot of these electronica, instrumental groups of late. It's not that I think it is bad music but it is not down my alley and a lot of it sounds very similar to me. I can't figure out what this group is doing differently from all the other instrumental electronica groups in the book.

Like rap without the rapping

I didn't find it particularly engaging but I did love "I stole your car"

Not for me

Our Aim Is To Satisfy is more electronic stuff but a more chill vibe, just ultimately quite boring and not as skilled as someone like Massive Attack. I didn't need to hear this before I die. 2.

Doesn't benefit from coming the day after the Chemical Brothers - this is not trying to do exactly the same thing but does it in a similar way and sounds very lightweight in comparison. We've had much better, call it a 2 and on to tomorrow.

Instrumental stuff just isn't my vibe.

Acid Jazz und Trip-Hop. Nun gut.

Put this off for a few days, just didn't have it in me for an hour of unknown electronic music. I ended up liking this more than I thought I would after my initial impression, but it's not for me and is entirely too long. I'm sure plenty of people out there dig it though.

I feel like heard all the instrumentals as the menu music of a PS2 game. It's not quite a 1 because it's not awful but it's definitely a weak 2.

I'd argue that no one has ever heard of this band or album before. What gives with that?

Not entirely sure what the point of that was. Pretty poor trip hop album given the quality that was getting released around a similar time. Belladonna the only track that made me feel anything. Anything at all. 2.5*

Disappointingly dull.

That's like 8th British electronic music album in the last 40 albums on the list for me. From said eight, one was good. It wasn't this one.

Somewhat enjoyable, in certain moods I could even see myself revisiting this one. High 2.

mostly mix of disinterested instrumentals. Alaska Street was the only one I really liked.

I dont hate it, but I wouldnt say that I'm satisfied by it. Not a terrible album, but a lot like everything else coming out of clubs in the UK in 2000. Ultimately not anything anyone should have to hear, and entirely forgettable. 2/5

Massive Attack but without everything that makes Massive Attack good.

Je suis pas sûre??

Did not enjoy

Need to listen

Not for me. Honestly don't understand why this is on this list. Overall I'd say it was boring and uninteresting.

Was enjoying this fine, very of it's time that it is, as a decent background electronica to work to with that turn of the century big beat sound, Propellorheads etc. Then it really lost me at track 5 and 6 when it sped up and went shit. At it's best when it makes most use of the acoustics such as the double bass. Very odd choice, never heard of this lot then or since. Not essential.

I had Jack and Cal help me rate this and they actually gave it rave reviews.

Weird music style but I liked Don't Go Nowhere.

not quite my cup of tea.

I appreciate what this album was aiming for and at times it was an interesting listen. Overall though I just don't think this is a genre for me. I don't plan on coming back to this band or album.

a bit of its time, was probably round about bang on in 2000 but missed it then

You know an album is influential when the Wikipedia article is three sentences long, one of them being about how it's included on this list. Well, I guess it's satisfactory background noise. Nothing more, nothing less. Who cares. A perfect 5/10.

Favorite Tracks: Shellback The Rough And The Quick

not for me.

This is a “must”?

so.. this was mainly instrumental, but listening to a whole album that sounds like the intense movie chasing scene background music that you used to get in the early 2000s is a bit too much, so I didn't really enjoy it, but at the same time, it wasn't THAT bad to rate it 1 star... and the songs that weren't chasing scenes, it was super annoyingly repetitive, saying the exact same things over and over again. The one song that started off nice and peacefully "Alaska Street" had some super annoying sounds throughout the song towards the middle of the song.

I should know about this as I was 18 and in the UK when this came out, I loved music around this area but I've never heard of this. I have no idea how this made the list, it's fine for a genre that I do enjoy but it's not good. It made me want to listen to propellerheads, chemical Brothers and massive attack, not listen again.

Really confused how this one made the list

This was in my wheelhouse in the early 2000's, but shouldn't be on this list.

Not for me

2 Oh God, another 60-minute instrumental electronic album. I thought the first track, Keeping the Pig Together, was actually pretty good and felt promising for the rest of the listen, but it very quickly gets incredibly same-y and repetitive from there. There is one thing in particular that stood out to me, and that’s that this album sounds just like the São Paulo Confessions album we had from that dude Suba, even down to the album art looking incredibly similar. That album came out just a year prior, so maybe Red Snapper were heavily influenced by it, but I found it to be pretty unremarkable as well, so these guys clearly didn't do much to evolve the sound if so. If anything, Suba’s album at least had video game vibes and to my knowledge never had any explicit descriptions of oral sex, so I’m going to give the guy the edge here. I suppose this was okay as background music while working, but not the kind of thing I would go out of my way to listen to again. Your aim was not met, Red Snapper.

Track 7 absolutely beautiful. Until then a bit one noted to me. Very groovy but not detailed. Track 9 great too. The End of it much better than the start! Another point better infact! It would be a 2 1/2, but unfortunately I would have to give a 2

OK, some nice grooves here and there, but in general quite boring, and a lot of weird alectronics that might have sounded cool for a clubbing audience some time back in the 90’s, but not really long lasting

Pretty boring electronic music, though the final track was cool. Stand-out: They're Hanging Me Tonight

Moody, mostly anxious, but, in one notable case, sexy, electronica. I should like it but the vibe is a little too weird art house horror movie for my taste. Also boring. It isn't terrible but I don't think I *had* to listen to it.

A touch of David Gray - but that's probably just the drum machines! Not bad, but a bit tooo electronica Bit of hip-hop/ funk thrown in. And quite a few random noises too. Not into any of the above genres. Overall it's a 2. (That's actually better than a 1!)

wasn't monotonous. not sure what to think. I can see it being influential but I never have to hear it again.

Decent. Some I really liked and other tracks I could not get into. Overall, ok.

had zero idea of what to expect. really felt like a crazy mixed bag. wish i could give it 2.5

Okaaayyy, was not expecting the explicit lyrics, but definitely appreciated it. Unfortunately, instrumental heavy electronic music is still not my preferred choice. Respect the work, but didn't love it for myself.

First time hearing of this band and album. While not usually something I would listen to, this was pretty good

Instrumental. Little rap

emblematic of 2000s techno and yet still thematically all over the place. derivative and boring.

Never heard of this group. It did not kill me to listen to this, but will never probably pull up again. Favorite was Some kind of Kink. One of the worst songs I have heard yet was The Rough and the Quick.

I was interested on where this album was going after the first song, but it fell off significantly as it went on.

Surprisingly generic turn of the millennium beats, is this really something that worth listening to? Something worth recommending that someone listen to? I'm honestly not sure it is...

In the final 100 album stretch of the project and they saved all the poorly-aged triphop club music for last it seems. This one at least manages to bring some interesting vox and synth timbres into play, but at the end of the day, it still rushes by in a forgettable whirl of standard 90s drum machine presets.

Not for me. Noisy and random. A couple fun tracks.

Första låten är ju kanon. Resten är inte kanon.

This wasn't bad. But I was bored. And it was super repetitive. Which I didn't like.

Sounds like the 90s.

Lush, Atmospheric, Monotonous, Mediocre

Excellent cure for insomnia, but a rubbish album

For something labeled as acid jazz this wasn’t the auditory assault I expected. It was just another shopping mall electronica album, though. It probably came packaged with the reviewers new 5 disc CD changer.

They did not please me, they did not satisfy me. Their aim sucks.

Reading the reviews I see that this album is like Massive Attack or Chemical Brothers - two bands I've had to listen to and actively hated. So I don't have high hopes for this. But to my surprise, I didn't end up hating this album. I also didn't love it. It's incredibly repetitive. You could trim songs by at least a minute and not notice anything missing. But it's pretty chill, you could put it on in the background for ambience. Not sure it's something you really want to pay attention to though.

It’s not the worst electronica I’ve heard, was generally unobjectionable background music but still not my style. “The Rough and the Quick” had some … interesting lyrics.

Weird robotic noises, not even lyrics. Flume vibes.

So repetitive

I just don’t care for this kind of loop-heavy squishy electronica. The beats were solid and a couple songs set a cool mood but mostly I listened to each track for a minute or two and then skipped it when the repetition grated on me.

Subpar electro DJ stuff, not for me this day.

I read somewhere that this band is like a revved up Massive Attack, you could also throw in there a chilled out Chemical Brothers. I also got some Portishead vibes from some of the songs sung by the female vocalist. The frenetic drum and beat songs got old fast, but they were saved by the last two chilled out tracks that sound like the Cinematic Orchestra. So my point is that this record is all over the place, some good some bad.

Sounds like music for documentaries

mostly forgettable synth-wave band that attempted to give Lords of Acid a run for their money on a couple of songs.

You missed.

I'd enjoyed their earlier stuff but the addition of repeated vocal samples makes this a really annoying listen. Not fun

I think this is only the 2nd performer/band I had never heard of before, and to my surprise it’s an album made when I was actively seeking and consuming new music. My only frame of reference for this is Massive Attack- it’s not as moody or trippy as they are - and Fatboy Slim, and this is more groovy than that is. It’s not really my thing.

Not for me.

What an odd mix of songs , some I was like yeah this is ok others were just bad

Mixed bag, instantly forgettable (on a first listen at least)

Too repetitive to be background music and not my style for active listening

Oh wow, these must be the guys that make all the DVD menu music!

Not a fan of electronic music like this

The album was unnoteworthy. It was bad but it wasn't good.

Red snappers can grow to about 1 meter, weigh up to 23 kilograms and live more than 50 years. Red snappers begin to reproduce when they are about two years old, spawning from May to October along rocky ledges or coral reefs. Bigger, older red snappers produce many more eggs than young ones. One 60-cm female red snapper (about 8 years old) produces as many fish as 212 40-cm females (about 5 years old). Click here to subscribe to more red snapper facts.

I'm sure I'm not the first to make this joke here, but I was really not satisfied while listening to this album. The wiki said it was a more energetic massive attack, which sounds shitty since massive attack is supposed to be slower and trippier, but production-wise it was even more stripped down than the massive attack stuff I've heard. For some reason, I didn't hate this album despite being very annoyed by quite a few of the songs, the rough and the quick being the worst culprit. The only thing that saved the album were a couple decent beats and ambient electronic sounds but even those I'll probably forget by this time tomorrow.

Musique électronique un peu quelconque. Je dois dire que ça ne m'a pas laissé une impression très marquante.

Keeping Pigs Together- 3/5 Some Kind of Kink- 3.6/5 Shellback- 3/5 Don't Go Nowhere- 2.7/5 The Rake- 2.5/5 The Rough and the Quick- 3.4/5 Bussing- 2.9/5 I Stole Your Car- 3.6/5 Alaska Street- 2.3/5 Belladonna- 2.2/5 They're Hanging Me Tonight- 2.8/5 Total- 2.9

Fine 🤷🏻‍♂️ added one or two songs to my library, but not really an album-wide draw for me. I like it, but it’s definitely early days for this kind of music.

Wow, it's been a little bit since I listened to an album this pointless on this list. There's some cool sounds in here, I guess, but for the most part it's just annoying background music. Any time it's not generic, it's cloying. I'd think of more ways to describe how uninteresting I find this album, but that would be putting more effort into this review than they put into making this shit 2/5

This book and electronica, I swear to god. It's like they intentionally pick the worst stuff, with only a few exceptions. This album sounds extremely dated and I'm not sure why anyone would classify this as essential listening.

je ne me souvient absolument de rien...

Nope just noise 2*

Didn't mind a bit of trip-hop / electronica "back in the day", but Red Snapper was not a name I recognised at all. It's definitely of it's time, so not sure it would be included in a 1001 great albums list put together in 2030. tldr? "It's OK, but no Portishead"

Didn’t satisfy me

I really don't know why this record is here. Oh well.

nothing special

Good grooves but nothing memorable and the hooks are very late 90s early 2000s - not a great era, feels very dated.

Not terrible music but instrumentals always bore me after a while. A full album like this gets tedious.

nice but quickly turns into background music. 2

Fine for background vibes. Don't think I'd ever actively listen to this again 2.5/5

"Our Aim Is To Satisfy" by Red Snapper falls short of its intended mark. Released in 2000, it attempts to blend electronic, jazz, and experimental influences but struggles to find a cohesive identity. Tracks like "Image of You" and "The Rough and the Quick" offer glimpses of the band's potential, but the album's overall sound lacks direction. The production feels disjointed, making it difficult to fully engage with the music. While experimentation is commendable, in this case, it leads to an uneven listening experience. The album's attempt to satisfy musical cravings ends up leaving the listener with a taste of uncertainty and disappointment, making it a challenging album to fully embrace. 2/5

Did not satisfy

Copy and paste this review to 75% of the electronica albums in this book since apparently there are approximately 800 of them: It's really not bad, but it really does nothing for me musically either.

Sounds like it would make a great soundtrack to something. As music by itself though, it's a bit lacking.

I have given this a few listens and I really don’t connect with it. It’s not the best electronic album, it’s not even the best Red Snapper album, Making Bones their debut is far superior. Listen to “image of you” off of this record, a perfect example of the talent of this band. Simply the wrong choice from the catalogue.

A little reminiscent of Prodigy? Meh

You missed.

This is a funky weird cool album that went way deeper than I initially expected it to. Just spiraled down down down into near art noise. Sort of loved it, though maybe not for everyday use. Definitely was fascinating and I see why this one made the list.

I might have liked it more if each song weren't so damn long and repetitive...

I enjoyed this more than expected at the start but it got pretty repetitive over time and I kind of zoned out by the last few tracks

Another one that is no longer in the book.

Not very interesting background music

I don't necessarily think this was bad. I just have no idea why someone would think that I needed to listen to this before i died?

Red Snapper? More like Bread Frapper… Or something. I don’t particularly care.

There are worse things I could have listened to. But there are also many, many better things.

The first two songs were pretty rough to listen to. Almost wrote off the whole album. Shellback and Don't Go Nowhere saved this album from being a 1 star. Alaska Street and Belladonna were pretty good too. I really disliked the voice effect that was used in this album. Had some cool hip hop/funk rhythms which I appreciate, but it feels like they didn't build enough on top of that. This album felt disjointed and repetitive, it could have been shortened to 30 minutes and still been the same. Overall this album wants to be a good mix of genres, like how peanut butter and chocolate is a good mix, but it feels more like peanut butter and kiwi; probably not terrible, but definitely not aiming to satisfy.

Not as much jazz as I was hoping for. There has been a theme to our last few days where these albums are just a bunch of repeating sounds. The ending few songs were my favorite part of the album The Rough and the Quick sounds like what Ray Allen based his famous 2010 tweet off of.

Got too repetitive for ambient music

Sopiva levy loopissa kuunteluun. Montakohan kertaa meni ympäri? Ei nyt kuitenkaan mitään erikoista, 2/5

I’ve never heard of Red Snapper before. I do quite like the name though. It’s a fish, right? It makes me think of animal crossing and that’s never a bad thing. Anyway, let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Keeping Pigs Together The start of this album felt fairly promising. It’s electronica, but seemingly with a real drum kit rather than programmed, which made it feel a bit more interesting than what I’m used to hearing. However, after the first two songs my attention started to waver, and as I got to the final few songs I was basically clock watching as I eagerly waited for it to be over. I can see the appeal with this music, I just don’t think it’s something that gelled with my preferences.

Pointless Electronica.

Genre: Trip hop First time for me. Never heard of the band, don't know the album. Singles: None Songs that appear on best of the band lists: -------------------------------------------------- Some Kind of Kink, Keeping Pigs Together, The Rake, Best Tracks: Maybe... Keeping the Pigs together. Many songs are just repetitive loops, and aren't exactly exciting... I really like trip-hop, but this one just doesn't do it for me...not yet anyways. Maybe I need more time with it. 2.5 for now...

I liked Prince Blimey - it felt very organic at the time and had some good songs too. Making Bones had its moments, but nowadays just sounds very outdated. Did not listen to any of their other work so it was rather surprising to see this album on the list. It should not have.

I liked a few of the instrumental parts but did not digest the album as a whole well.

Not an album I enjoyed

Not into it

I found this to be mostly unremarkable, but passable as background music. A few of the more vulgar tracks grabbed my attention, but not in a bad way.

Does it have its moments? Sure. Does it belong on this list? Nope. We've had 4 or 5 albums from the 90s/00s 'assorted background beats' scene so far, and that already feels like an overrepresentation. Definitely didn't need to listen to all of them before I die.

Not the best trip hop ever. When it is funky, it is pretty good. When it approaches acid jazz, it's okay. Too much of it is plodding dark repetitive and uninspiring. It feels disjointed.

I guess they were pretty explicit about what Red Snapper mean in the rough and the quick... Zoinks.

electrònica atmosfèrica amb algun moment interessant però, en general, massa lineal

Started nicely, but it got more and more annoying. Too bad.

not so trip not so pop...

Cool nocturnal trip-hop, but a little long-winded and samey overall, but I can't see why it is in the 1001.

Interesting electronic album, not interesting enough to make me want to listen again.

Listening to this is like when you have a rock in your shoe but it's in your sinuses instead. Best track: Keeping Pigs Together

Electronica, lidt akustisk, lidt triphop, lidt vokal, ok

I don’t really know why this album made the cut when the first list was compiled, and it doesn’t surprise me to see it removed from the latest edition of the book. “Our Aim is To Satisfy” starts on a promising note with “Keeping Things Together”, but it didn’t manage to keep my attention for long, not even with the super explicit “The Rough and The Quick”. Maybe I just haven’t had enough exposure to trip hop beyond Portishead and Massive Attack? Will revisit on the weekend to see if it improves with familiarity.

Not bad and I can see the appeal, just not my jam.

The path to heaven is paved with good intentions. So is the path to energetic but stodgy funk.

Un altre exercici de fussionar géneres, superposar textures, buscar diferents estats d'ànim... Interessant... però meh

Not my thing.

Not my vibe

It was on, didn't really notice it - how is it on the list?

Some interesting instrumental tracks marred by too many hip-hop ones. *sigh* Best track (by a mile): Keeping Pigs Together. 2/5

Repetatief. Achtergrondmuziek.

chill but too repetitive

An OK, mostly instrumental album. Inflected with acid jazz, trip hop, hip hop etc, this is a pretty funky (if slightly mechanical) album of instrumentals. Not earth shattering. Really not sure why this is on the list.

I've never heard of Red Snapper before. The album is a fix of funk and groove on aucoustic instruments, but from a perspective of electronic music. Most of the album was okay. One track I would skip every time, dropping this album from 3 to 2 stars. The track that I would skip makes me worried that I missed other things in the lyrics on the rest of the album. I won't recommend this album to anyone.

Electronic music is just really not for me. I didn’t care for this. It’s essentially ambient noise. That’s never really going to be my thing. I like lyrics. I like singing. This does not have that sans the occasional feature. Also all the songs sound far too similar and meld into an hour long noise trip.

Another early 2000s beat tape and that’s just not my thing it’s fine in the background of nfs but not to sit down and listen to

I read a review of this album that said it reminded them of something that would be playing in a club in the Matrix. I only really agree with that for the first song on the album, Keeping Pigs Together, which was my favorite song on the album. I also liked Belladonna. There were other good moments too but overall this was not my thing.

Well, I'll give it that the songs were really well mixed. I'm not sure if this would be one of the top albums of 2000 or why it's on the 1001 albums to listen to but I digress. Keeping Pigs Together was pretty decent, but it went downhill from there. ...after a while, this album kindof grew on me? not a high rating or anything but it wasn't as horrible as I originally thought. 2.5/5

Beat tape for Eminem 3 Some kind of cake 2 This sucks 1 But not that bad "Belladonna" makes me feel something

I remember quite liking Red Snapper at the time, but this is very much of its time - pure Shoreditch 90s wine bar music.

2/5 nope

I liked this- i'm into this kinda sound at the moment but..... ....it doesn't deserve to be in this list. There are so so many artists that aren't trendy and that the judges deem not worthy.

Well this is repetitive. I've given it a decent go, and while it isn't awful I can't imagine anyone would put it in a list of must-listen-to albums. It is just absolutely, 100% pure meh.

Pretty good, again never heard this before.

I'd hate to find out this is their best. Monotonous. Dreary. Tuneless. Got as far as "Shellback" and started to FFWD. Brief redemption with "I Stole Your Car", but that was it. Didn't add.

My initial thought looking at the cover/title was scungy UK techno, and... well, yep. Not as grimy as some I've heard, but still the soundtrack to any given ps1 snowboarding game. And the length.... sigh. They never learn. I'd really like a genuine reason why I couldn't die before I heard this. It did NOT satisfy. 2/5.

wasnt so much my jam

The third album from the band Red Snapper released in 2000. The band experiments with all types of music genres, but they and this album can be classified as acid jazz - jazz mixed with funk, soul, and hip-hop. This album is one of their best and it contains "moody, atmospheric instrumentals with funkier, soulful vocals - that flows smoothly from beginning to end, a soundtrack for urban Britain". I like the vibe that this album gives off and agree that it's some chill music you could get lost in - especially when driving around late at night. A great change of pace for these 1001 albums I'm sifting through.

Weird atmospheric and electronic stuff, not really my jam

Too much noise

I owned this album first time around, at the time I was hoping it'd be an interesting collision between Trip Hop and Big Beat. It disappointed in that regard. Red Snapper always used live drumming rather than computerised loops and for that, I'm giving them a bonus mark. But I'll forget this album for the second time in relatively short order having listened through it 20 years or so after I last did

It's ok but didn't grab me.

Trip-hop makes an appearance again. This album is lacking what some of the other albums have though - tunes. There was an attempt but if I was a teacher the advice would be must try harder. Best Tracks: Some Kind of Kink; The Rake; Bussing

Some interesting moments but not enough.

not sure why this made the list. bland.

Didn't hate it. It was almost a nice, uptempo, listen in the background album.

Occasionally enjoyable

"The Rake" made me angry.

OK I guess. Fine in the background. But nothing all that noteworthy. Barely hits a 2 in my book.

Satisfied.

Boring.

Not a fan overall, but could see myself listening to a couple tracks in the background while doing repetitive work.

Not for me, in my room, by myself.

Notes: 2 seconds in and I’m scared the flood are gonna creeping up on me. First song was alright. After 2 I’m starting to think this album is basically a very early 2000s weird indie movie soundtrack set in a nightclub. Feels experimental, very background music-y. Was this the LoFi of the 2000s? Lick my WHAT 2 star cus I don’t wanna say it’s god awful, but I’m not sure that was an album I NEEDED to listen to before I die like the site says.

electronica feels like a soundtrack, very immersive like how they play with texture would i go back to it tho ? interesting but... cool album design the third track has something going for it c'est vraiment un bruit de fond pour moi ça me fatigue déjà the rake... ugh who thought that this motif would sound good ? a shame cause the guitar sounds good sounds like crazy frog w/o the fun this sounds horrendous hesitated on giving a 2 but if this goes on... it just goes on and on c'est très répétitif le 6e son = son des 90's suuuuuper répétitif. gets less obnoxious but not more interesting ok the horn on bussing is good a bit of diversity w/ i stole your car (sounds dance hall inspired). Mary jane... of course les cuivres sont tjrs appréciés lots of men in the list so far alaska street has an interesting progression belladonna, i hope you don't disappoint me du violoncelle ! où-est ce qu'il était ce violoncelle ? bordel de cul ! les 2 derniers sons sont incroyables... mais avant d'y arriver... donc note finale 2 !

Never heard of it before. A bit of a struggle. Like a poor man’s Massive Attack. I got to the end but unlikely to return

Nowhere near as good as it’s predecessor ‘Making Bones, ‘Our Aim Is To Satisfy...’. straddles late 90’s trip hop & acid jazz, good live drum production and slinky double bass (eg Don’t Go Nowhere) but it’s a hard album to judge as too much of it sounds familiar in 2021. This gets a 2 but Red Snapper made better, more defined albums than this.

Not terrible but only when I tuned it out as background music. 6.3/10

Interesting. Unlikely to revisit.

15th July 2021 Listened throughout the day on my phone but finished the morning after. I liked bits of this, the more jazzy and funky songs.

Reminds me of early 2000s Moby, David Holmes, etc. Trip hop

It’s just beats..and without a vocalist or rapper, it falls flat and becomes quickly quite uninteresting.

2- ganz cool, aber nothing for me

This was super wacky but I felt like it had no substance. Hey, sort of like me.

Not really my thing, but had its moments

Extremely confusing album.

Found this incredibly boring for the most part. I didn't hate it, just thought it was uninteresting and uninspiring. Not a fan of music where it's just a series of samples repeated over and over ad nauseam, which is basically what this is. Some of the tracks towards the end were a little more interesting, but not enough to leave me wanting more.

Not a big fan. The last instrumental was fun, though

Doodah music...skater music...still don‘t like it very much

Acid jazz. Easy to listen to at points, other times quite harsh.

Dear Red Snapper, you missed. This was not enjoyable at all. It was droning and uninteresting. Not my cup of tea. 1.5 stars

According to the album title, Red Snapper’s aim is to satisfy. Well, they don’t quite succeed, but the way they fail is remarkable. I read on Wikipedia that real musicians contributed to this record, though that’s not apparent in most of the tracks. The production is so over-the-top that the original musicians' input practically plays no role at all. Opinions on this may vary; mine is that the core element of art—namely, people expressing themselves—has been lost. The result doesn’t move me in the slightest. I have better things to do than hearing this album before I die.

Not more of this shit again.

No te creo que esté disco esté entre los 1001 álbumes. No me gustó.

Errm what is he doing to the red snapper? We're beyond a joke at this point. It's Friday, it's unseasonably hot signalling the end of days, and I fucking hate music. This is complete garbage. That's all I can say. Fuck it. It's making me madder as we go on. This is low effort electronic music that is also trying to be funny. It is a complete failure on both counts. I can't even fathom who would sit and listen to this voluntarily. It's a big world, and I suppose that's why we're not all pals. Wars have been started over less grievous transgressions than this record. I have nobody to blame but myself for undertaking this ridiculous endeavour where I am halfway through a list of movie soundtracks and British house music, sitting through Crazy Frog for adults with stunted learning abilities. There is a poster of me at the aquarium saying I can't come back. 0 GENRE: Performatively driving around in the dark pretending to be an interesting melancholic

This is very Year 2000 but it does not work for 2026. Man was this a slog.

I really don’t like this kinda futuristic 90s/00s electronica. Does not do it for me

Utterly forgettable. What makes this album stand out from others coming out at the same time? Nothing really. 1/5

Why is this an album I needed to hear??

Another pile of bullshit.

Boring trip hop. Likely will never listen to any songs ever again. You get the gist of the whole album halfway through the first song

Not my type

There aren’t lyrics

Electronic music is hard for me to properly rate. I am unable to determine what is good versus what is rote or a copy of something else. The result is that electronic music by and large all sounds the same. This album especially so. Each songs starts and sounds more or less the same. No shifts in rhythm or even the ancillary music. Drab. Repetitive.

Boring, uninteresting, repetitive, unpleasant noise

It really just felt like this album didn’t know what it was

It’s not my least favourite sound in the world

Pretty boring

Is there any other genre that has aged as poorly as Acid Jazz? Maybe Trip Hop. Unbearable.

I knew absolutely nothing about this artist or album and now that I've heard I feel my life is none the better for having listened to it The first 30 seconds got my interest, dark ambient jazz like something from a neo noir film then the most generic drum track kicks in and it's all downhill to boredom town from there

I did not make it through, I think I stopped at track three? I was not here for it man, wrong headspace. I needed vital, pulsing music and this was not giving me life.

If your aim was to satisfy you fucking failed. Boring slot. PS1 demo disc music.

Another boring electronica album that I really didn't get much out of. Absolutely hated how blunt the lyrics were on The Rough and the Quick, which would have been one of the better songs here were it not for the vocals. The opening song was alright, but I wouldn't come back to anything else on this thing. 1.5/5, rounded down to 1.

BORRRRRRRINNNNGGGG!!!

For me, all I hear are some random noises

I don’t like this style of music, I don’t understand why someone would listen to it for pleasure.

553/1001 🌕🌗🌑🌑🌑

Just shitty noise. Happy Valentine’s Day I guess.

0 stars for relevancy, 2 stars for musical content. The verdict? Shite

Album #58 Red Snapper: Our Aim is to Satisfy If their aim was to satisfy, then they didn’t achieve their goal. I don’t know much about electronic music, but according to this list, neither does anyone else. Every electronic album on this list is completely obscure, overly indulgent, and entirely a waste of time. I do wonder if there will be any electronic albums that I’ve actually heard of, like Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada, because as it looks right now, there isn’t a single electronic album on this list I would actually return to. I did hit 12k trophies in Clash Royale while listening, though, so this album gets a bonus point. Best Songs: Alaska Street, Keeping Pigs Together, Don’t Go Nowhere Worst Song: The Rough and the Quick Score out of 10: 3

I'm sure when this came out - 25 years ago - it would have sounded futuristic. Now, it sounds really dated, generic, and thoroughly dull.

The penance I must pay for getting something really good two days ago, is the garbage I got yesterday, and somehow, someway, they found an even worse album today. Another one that really should be zero stars.

Boring.

No ta x

I do have a copy of the book, but I don’t remember this at all. Presumably it only made it into one edition, and it’s not hard to see why

Not a fan of this one tbh

Oh oh no that was really bad wow. The Rough And The Quick was just so dumb.
