Reviews (page 4 of 8)
It's hard to compare this to other bands because Pavement truly came to define the American Indie genre. It's eccentrically captivating as the band sprinkles dissonance throughout harmonic sections. Went on to influence so many, and many levels beyond their direct line.
distortion obligatoire; a certain lugubrious distance from involvement with reality
Some groovy indie rock, 4 stars.
4,5. ekki besta platan þeirra en mjög góð og sú fyrsta sem ég keypti/hlustaði á. öll þessi einkunnagjöf er einkennileg.
A country ballad about teens, a jazz instrumental, and name-dropping Santa Rosa.
Ive never heard this before but I'm into it
The album that is being played in hundreds of college town record shops at this very moment, and deservedly so. Dissonant and irreverent like The Fall, but not so sparse. Loads of overdriven melody and fuzzy textures. This is what the 90s sounds like in my memories.
Okay I hope around to it and it's good
Not my favorite Pavement record, but better than I remember. It’s good, but not their peak imo. It’s a little all over the place, which might be part of the appeal for some but for me a couple of their later records pull it off better.
So careless and sarcastic. Like a big inside joke that you wanna be in on. Buncha characters. Super fun listening
Great album, love this sound of the 90s. Makes me wanna snowboard. 'Unfair' was probably my favourite track. Really enjoyed the random jam on 5-4=Unity. 7/10
Bastante guay, hay temazos, es música que me pondría, pero tampoco me ha flipado.
Slacker rock babyyy
Definetely a discovery! How could it happen, that I didn't notice them...
Really great indie record. Cool instrumental, super dynamic, and the vocals are iconic.
Whenever I listen to Pavement I realize how I forgot how much I love Pavement. Solid record right here, perfect indie rock. I prefer Brighten The Corners tho.
Really enjoyed it but didn't have enough time with it Will go 4 but will revisit
I liked this album. It flowed really nicely and was an easy listen
Cool cool cool. I definitely should have been born to hear this upon release. This was a rad album.
Amazing album can’t believe be I’ve never heard of them before
Silence Kid has a very "Buddy Holly" vibe hiding behind it's grungy punky rock sound. Stop Breathin' had an out-of-tune country sound. A little Rolling Stones. This is a weird album and I like it. Newark Wilder sounds like CAKE
Great stuff
I forgot about this band. Solid indie rock that holds up well
Favourite tracks: cut your hair
Probably my most generous 4, mainly doing it so I listen to it again later, to see if I was right or just in a weird mood listening to it the first time.
74/100
Beloved less raw 2nd album from US indie darlings . Think I'm going soft but this gets a 4.
Pleasant rock and roll. Easy to listen to. Really like the song 5-4=Unity - it reminds me of some other song that I can’t remember at the time. Quiet a variety of style/genre across songs. Not a big fan of the song Hit the Plane Down - especially not the end.
Already listened to
I like this. He’s not a good singer but the jams make up for that.
Enjoyable music
Soort van indie-grunge mengeling. Goed album
I enjoyed it. Saw them not too long ago. For sure a great live band.
Jazzier than I thought from only Cut your Hair! A very easy, interesting listen.
just a really fun album. Stephen malkmus with his almost lazy vocals (in a good way) over poppy but still distorted guitars. love it.
Surprisingly fantastic record. Amazing instrumentation some of the riffs and solos sound amazing. Pretty consistent tracklist throughout. Got some great tracks overall great album strong 8
Bloody good album oozing indie rock and shoegaze 90's vibes. Obviously took some The Pixies sounds and morphed them, and Cut Your Hair was, and still is, an absolute classic. Very nostalgic and stands up tall today.
I forgot how good this album was and still is. No fillers, all great tracks, with some bangers included, "Cut your hair" and "Range life" Great instrumentation and lyrics as always from pavement, even though i have no idea what they are singing about. Not my favourite Pavement album though, not a 5 star classic but definitely 4.5
Pleasantly surprised
Somewhere between Silversun Pickups, Modest Mouse, and Cake
so slack it almost falls off the edge of the table but the high points are high
Pavement are a band I discovered through this project and who are decent, but not that exciting for my ears.
Ok
Super!
If I had heard this for the first time when I was like 15 it would probably be one of my favs ever. Doesn't quite resonate like that any more, but it's pretty good.
radiohead + cake, with a pinch of shoegaze grunge angst and a slight waft of psychedelia. I could probably listen to this on repeat.
I had heard of Pavement and this album but I knew NOTHING on it and I was a freshman in college in the US in 1994. NO EXCUSE. It’s like Beck mixed with Husker Du, but you know that they also cover Minor Threat songs, but not tonight because they’ve got a hangover. I really liked it even if I can’t hum along to any of the songs now. Weird, that undefinable nature of enjoyable music. Other people probably hate it. Good thing I’m not them.
I'm not saying that the vocalist can sing, but his bad singing fits nicely with guitars. Also it's good to know who is the guy that beabadoobee wishes to be.
Linda. Ice
4 stars. Ive listened to this several times before. It takes a bit, but gets stronger each time.
crankin'
i enjoyed this more than i thought i would
Solid rock album. Added to my library, will listen again!
De nog hurja banger men ja kan tyvärr int ge de en femma… kanske om gud sku ha haft nåden att ge den senare på listan då ja ha lyssna den mer …
Absolute indie classic. Got even better on the latest listen.
Haven’t listened to much pavement but I’m not sure why. Quite liked this album
*Gold Soundz
Great writing. Catchy melodies. Emotion-filled lyrics. The unexperienced vocals compliment some tracks and hurt others. Overall, a fairly good album. 7/10 -> 4/5
Interesting and meaningless at the same time. Comes across as apathetic, smart, lazy, stoner rock, perfect for the 90s. The vocals are slightly meandering, reminds me of The Pogues a little bit. The music is generally alt rock, but also includes vibes of folk and southern rock. Favorite tracks: Unfair, Range Life, Cut Your Hair Least favorite tracks: 5-4=Unity, Hit the Plane Down, 4/5
beetje rauwe pop punk vibe, love it
Oh i like it
ce fut divertissant
I grew up with people around me worshiping the ground Stephen Malkmus walked on, so I stayed back a bit with my adoration of Pavement. I heard it a lot in my teenage years, never disliked it, but it also never stood out for me, for whatever reason. Still, this is a great album. Unpolished pop songs with barbs here and there, but always melodic. And where the lo-fi sounds really give it its character, I sometimes, blasphemously, wouldn't have minded a little more polished sound.
Great album that deserves another listen.
This feels like the missing link for everyone who cites The Velvet Underground as the indie rock progenitors. Straight line from them to Pavement to Kurt Vile.
Really enjoyed this. Currently listening to the episode of Bandsplain about Pavement and it’s giving me some good context.
Good album, its part of my regular playlist.
The singularity of this album lies in the fact of driving good melodies and contagious emotion through abstract, noisy and fuzzy music. I don't know how you make a such cohesive but chaotic album, but they did it and I enjoyed it. I didn't fully understand the whole thing as it was my first listen, but I'll certainly come back for more time with Pavement.
Loved it! What a top album. Already liked a lot from here but loved listening to it a couple of times as a complete thing. Need to explore Pavement more
I loved that. Pavement are a band I know I really like, I love the vocals and the sound but for some reason I don't listen to them often. Need to!
Definitivamente tengo que volver a escuchar éste álbum, le dí poca atención, pero me resultó una banda interesante y suena muy bien.
1( i like the dirty, garage punk sound. 2. the dums are loder than the vocals. I can imagine this would be a fun mosh pit to be in. i like the fakeout end that leads into more instrumental 3) slow one. i like it. its real mood. makes you remember rock comes with feeling, realness. Ooh more instrumental post lyrics. It's almost like they save the best of the music for last where it can get it's own spotlight 4) this songs a lot more fun, more of a vocal focus, gives me kind of a grungy pop punk vibe 5) 6)hell yea, loud, fun, vibey 7) i like it 8) absolute grooves full instumental 9) vibes 9/10 10) 11)a lot more grungy, not that great compared to the rest. like my drugs should have hit in to enjoy this one. kind of just dissolved into noise 12) Starts to get good about half way in
good
This album is one of my favorites. It has a fantastic alternative rock style which combines low-effort musicianship with mature song writing. Has this free feel which I really like. Cut Your Hair is a classic ear worm. Stephen Malkmus is the Bob Dylan of mid 90's alt rock---if you can get over his terrible voice there's some great songs.
Reminds me of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. but a little easier to listen to. Not sure why a genre with so much vocal fry exists, this album could be stronger. Weak 4
Easy to listen to indie rock
Good album that reminds me of the raw underpinnings of the grunge movement. Unpredictable and melodic, the album is a quality grunge record.
Real good!
Such a good record! Known this one for quite some years, and it aged greatly. Really laid back songs with the occasional rocking moments. The guitar melodies are really good, fit like a charm with Stephen's chilled vocal delivery. This record flies by in an instant and has high replay value! Key tracks: Silence Kid, Elevate Me Later, Stop Breathin, Cut Your Hair, Newark Wilder, Gold Soundz, Range Life, Heaven Is A Truck, Fillmore Jive 9 out of 10
i could vibe with this while stoned
fajne, wpada w ucho, np. cut your hair i unfair
Hmm... I dunno where I stand on this. I love indie rock and I liked this album, but it didn't get its hooks into me as some other indie stuff. I think it'll grow on me over time. 4.5/5
Pavement - Unfair - woooooo *listen to me again. not a 5 but a solid 4
Very solid album. This is my sweet spot, so probably biased.
Nice album, I somehow never listened to the whole thing before! Saved tracks: Elevate Me Later, Unfair, Range Life
kind of reminds me of early spoon or something
pavement good
Firstly, very much in this album's favour, it slags off the Smashing Pumpkins, and my kiddiwinks, you should all have realised by now that the Smashing Pumkpins are perhaps the worst band of all. The saluteworthy lyrics run: Out on tour with The Smashing Pumpkins Nature kids I, they don't have no function I don't understand what they mean And I could really give a fuck Billy Corgan, walking evidence that some kids really shouldn't be told they're special, got so blubby over these lines that he had Pavement dropped from that year's Lollapalooza and claimed Pavement were jealous of his Cure-knock-off, high-school-D&D-Wicca, self-pitying, self-important tripe. Pavement were clearly the heroes of that situation, and Billy Corgan acting so characteristically just makes one mock him all the fiercer. But what about the album itself? It can't depend solely on the goodwill attained by striking a deserved target. And it's an okay album. It's decent, enjoyable, acceptable, fine. This is in part because on Crooked Rain Crooked Rain they largely, but not wholly, forgo aping the Fall, an impersonation that ruined their previous album Slanted and Enchanted (you know, Mark E. Smith was still going in 1994, and he kept at his singular coalface until he dropped in 2018, so what was the point in mimicking him?). Rather, the style employed on Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain lies steadfast within the American college rock Weltenshauung, all quirky hooks, tasteful use of fuzz guitar and mildly absurdist lyrics that purport to convey greater meaning by being meaningless. I've always felt a bit of a chilly wind from college rock, as it seems to focus more on being clever than good. Of course, cleverness and quality are in no way mutually exclusive, but likewise they are in no way mutually inclusive: cleverness too often leads to that vile enemy of art, good taste. Yeah, it's that tastefulness that prevents this from being a great album. It's a fun journey while it's ticking along, but for all the overt oddness dotted throughout the album, it comes across as ultimately conservative. Its weirdness is not the kind of weirdness that'd alienate a girl you'd brought back to your room who preferred Mariah Carey, and thus its weirdness sounds shallow and untrustworthy ("Yeah, I'm, like, interesting and uncompromising in my music, but I ain't scaring off the PUSS-AY!"). Still, a high three, along with a bonus star for pissing off Billy Corgan.
Great listen very nice melodies for the ears and satisfying guitar riffs
6/12, 50%
Very 90s like weezer
Though they may not play fast and loose with song structures like the Grateful Dead or Phish, Pavement has the soul of a jam band. One of those rare albums where the back half is livelier than the front.
An ok grunge album
Fun album! I like the variety and the album as a whole, some parts were pretty unmemorable though
Could honestly have Modest Mouse’s career
I get some Siamese Dream vibes, self-title Foo Fighters as well. Vocals sound like Rivers Cuomo out of breath. That's not a compliment. It feels like something I could've created on my own. I guess that's the point though.
why don't you go and cut your HAIR!?
Paar goei schijven op.
Sounds exactly like its time - mid 90s. Reminds me of Goldhawk Road, bongs and the Shepherd's Bush Empire.
Interesting sound. Little bit like Weezer meets Bob Dylan
Felt like I was in a 90s teen movie with this one
Did I like this? Not expecting too, with their wacky vibe and 'American Fall' billing. But it was full of melody and well-built songs. Maybe one of the very select albums I buy following hearing it here, but need to give it a couple more listens.
Was unaware of how influential this band is. A great song on the album talking the nonsense of the 90s band. Also very long album which I wasn’t prepared for but a nice change
Hieno indieklassikko. Pari aivan erinomaista biisiä.
Great chilled slacker album...love it
Pretty good actually.
Perhaps the most important underground band since the velvet kind? I believe the Onion was right when they wrote that Pitchfork wrote “In the end, though music can be brilliant at times, the whole medium comes off as derivative of Pavement.” 'Gold Soundz' really is a terrific track.
The lo-fi approach almost feels like a direct attack on the growing grunge sound of the same era. Still noisy as hell, but with absolutely no obvious attempt at writing something even resembling a hit. Also the fact that Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins was genuinely furious at the band for referencing them in Range Life is hilarious!
Wasn't sure what to think going in to this. It was not bad. I could see this band going on my shuffle. Without knowing any musical terms (im learning) I would describe this as upbeat but slightly angry rock. Sounds kind of familiar but at the same time foreign. 4/5
Довольно необычная рок-группа для 1994-ого года. Есть как нотки влияния джаза, так и интересная игра с ритмом и нечто похожее на будущий стоунер. За оригинальность 7 из 10
enjoyable
At the time the Pavement appeared they felt like a nice break from the testosterone driven grunge clones that dominated the scene. Too bad they turned out to be a bunch of smug jerks at times, too clever for other people's good and platitudes about what is cool. Musically I still love this but it was the last Pavement album I enjoyed. Go listen to Slanted and Encanted to hear what the band could've been
Apesar de Indie não ser um dos meus estilos favoritos, é um bom álbum
There is some nirvana feel at places. I like this album the more I hear it. Glad to know pavement.
Likably (if intentionally) ragged and discordant. Same with the strained vocals, which are obviously (and perhaps excessively) affected, as nearly everything is with Malkmus. “Cut Your Hair” is a stone-cold classic (and not just for stoners) and “Range Life” is excellent. I think this band has an understandably split personality based on being underrated by half of the listening public and overrated by the other half. I’ve never been entirely sure how seriously they want to be taken. The all-pervasive ironies, the constant smugness, the off-key singing, the lo-fi “whatever” vibe – they don’t want to make it easy for you to like them, though Malkmus wont’ fully commit to the tortured artist act, either. All of which tells us … what, exactly? Again, I’ve never been sure about this band. I might be overthinking it, the kind of thing I suspect Malkmus would both do and make fun of others for doing. The only thing that’s clear is that this is a very good record
Revisited and its still pretty gooooooood
Music the weird kid in your class that never talks and you're worried one day will sh**t everyone up makes. 7/10 F.t.: Unfair
When I think of indie rock, Pavement is usually one of the first to come to mind. Compared to the indie rock that came before then (i.e. the jangles of REM and Smiths, or the noisiness of Sonic Youth and Pixies), these guys are clean and melodic yet lofi and honest, like a less grungey and polished Nirvana. Even the opening gives off Radiohead vibes before The Bends. It's introspective and unique. There are moments like the post-rock solo in "Stop Breathin" that are years ahead of their time. Yet, it's also super accessible. Arguably, their three most popular songs are here. "Cut Your Hair" is happy, energetic, and catchy, with plenty of memorable moments, from the vocal overlays to the random punk belts. "Gold Soundz" is the most melodic song on the album and the one that stood out to me during my first listen. Gives me goosebumps with those buildups. "Range Life" is my favorite of the hits. Lyrics are my favorite, as well as that country-like melody. As a huge fan of STP (those foxy elegant bastards), I got a laugh out of their Smashing Pumpkins diss, and I can't believe they got kicked out of Lollapalooza. "Newark Wilder" is my personal favorite. I really love the mysterious vibe and yearnful vocals... vastly underrated. The song starts and ends super strong, although I admit the middle is lacking. "Unfair" is a raw punk song with chaotic instrumentals that reminds me of Nirvana's In Utero. "5-4=Unity" is our avant-garde jazzy instrumental, a nice interlude between two highlights. Personally, I lose attention in the last three songs following "Range Life." "Heaven Is a Truck" is solid but forgettable; "Hit the Plane Down" is comedy punk; and "Fillmore Jive" is twice as long as it should be but is a fitting dramatic closer. Favorites: Stop Breathin, Cut Your Hair, Newark Wilder, Gold Soundz, Range Life
Classic
Solid
Is this good music from the 90s?
It's a decent album, I suppose, but its glorification is a mystery to me.
For some reason I've never listened to Pavement before, although obviously I was aware of them. Strange really, as they're certainly the sort of band I like. Great album, wonder why it took so long to get around to hearing it...
Pretty good grunge album. Didn't dig every track, but over all enjoyable.
I really struggle with how to rate these guys. Steven Malkmus's whiny vocals sometimes annoy the shit out of me and his guitar work often sounds too jangly and off key. But on the flip side there are some great songs on this album and I find myself toe tapping throughout. So... 3.5 leaning toward 4 I guess.
Highlight: Range Life, but I loved this whole album.
Wilco-esque at times. Solid.
I haven't heard a lot of Pavement but I love, love, Range Life. There are a bunch of other good ones on here, a few take-it-or-leave it ones for me, but overall very good stuff. This sounds like modern indie but this was 1994! I enjoy the vocal style but I can imagine a lot of people wouldn't, it's a perfectly relatable cadence that almost anyone can sing along with. 4.5 to 4.
Rad guitars.
Only recently discovering Pavement. Their stuff is samey but right in my grungy sweet spot
👍
Very alternative, sounds a lot like other albums
If Dinosaur Jr were a Weezer-influenced band (without the fetishes).
pretty good, deserves another listen probably but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations of such an iconic indie band bc it felt pretty disjointed :/ the singles are rock solid though 7/10
8/10. The morose singing was kinda just meh, but the lyrics and instrumentals were quite nice
Listening to this album put me in the shoes of a college student blasting this on cd while sipping beer in a crusty lounge chair on a warm Sunday afternoon. 8/10
love pavement <3 x
4.5
Not bad! Knew some of the songs already and was surprised by others!
I used to listen to this album a lot, but it fell off my radar after University. Nice to have this come back into my life Is it a 5? Probably not. But I'll let it loop a few times before I move to the next CD, if only for nostalgia's sake. 🍺 5-4=Unity's sampling of "Take Five" -> Feels good.
Fuck yeah. I LOVE the ragged edges on this album, mess = magic here. The dude's attitude is <kisses fingers Italian style>
Surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Not to judge a book by its cover, but I didn't think I'd like this album, having never heard of this group. Definitely sounds like a 90's album, giving me Green Day or Weezer vibes. Giving it 4 stars, the second side was a little more lackluster compared to the first, and the album as a whole did blur together. Favorite Songs: Cut Your Hair, Unfair, Silence Kid, Gold Soundz
I was familiar with this album before this adventure, but I'm glad I got a chance to listen to it. An indie rock classic! Favorites: Silence Kid, Gold Soundz, Fillmore Jive
Impressive mood/instrumental with a less impressive vocalist. Sounds like grunge's little less angsty and noisy brother.
Animated Pixies-esque singing and emotional playing. This album sometimes rides the grunge wave, but when it does, it does so creatively and refreshingly. It blends personal and meaningfull with fun and lightheartedness. Very nice album that I will definitely check out again.
Creo que si hubiera conicido a Pavement en su época de auge me hubieran gustado. Hay un algo en la forma de cantar ligeramente desafinada pero cuidada que me gusta. Las canciones son el típico sonido del alternativo noventero.
One of the best low-fi bands and one of their best albums, Malkmus is a genius with the guitar. Range Life, Cut Your Hair & Gold Soundz all superb tracks
An indie classic
Sounds like pre Weezer influence
gave this a few listens, it grew on me, after a while.
Alternative college rock from the 90's fronted by Stephen Mushmouth, yeah, I know what you're thinking. Not him. It was his brother that was on the Fat Albert show. Anyway, I missed this in college because I was listening to REAL music, without all those SMRT BRAIN lyrics without hidden meanings. Also, I couldn't afford a radio. But, being formally introduced to this in 2024, It played roughly the way I had assumed. Collegiate music from the 90's. A time capsule without all that overhyped and overplayed grunge shit. Mushmouth was fighting the good fight, though a losing battle. His smart brain indie stuff up against the dark heaviness of the Seattle scene. Silliness vs. Sadness. And any band willing to take that on in the 90's deserves some respect.
Alternative classic, that I never had time to listen to. Would've fit much better if I'd listen to it first in 90s, but, glad I finally made it
4/5
Love this album!
I didn't get into any of this until the Stephen Malkmus - Stephen Malkmus album, and then I circled back. I like so much of this, but sometimes it kind of works itself down into an eddy and I lose interest. But a lot of good stuff here.
Real great indie rock. Standout Tracks: Elevate Me Later, Newark Wilder, 5-4=Unity, Hit the Plane Down
que linda banda pa
I've never quite understood the incredible hype Pavement, and especially this album gets. It's a good, at points great indie record, but the whole Pitchforkian 10/10 Gold Soundz is the best song of the 90s vibe just doesn't make sense to me.
It started out with some songs that I really didnt like but then the album grew on me as we progressed through the tracks
Great album, great band. Cut Your Hair, Gold Soundz & Range Life are standout tracks but the album has a great flow and is eccentric and interesting. Up alongside Brighten The Corners as my favourite Pavement album.
Absolutely gorgeous, moving indie rock. For some reason, I didn't like it on my first listen, but now I really like it!
Wacky original music & lyrics
I liked the crunchy guitar tone and the singer's voice. There was also some cool intentional out-of-tuneness in Stop Breathin... rather creative.
Songs mean a lot, when songs are bought; and so are you.
Fun album. Pavement is great
I like Pavement! Their songs have a creative sound and the singers voice is unique which I really like.
Eyyy it's one I know! Good little album. A little edgy but mostly just fun. Need to listen to more of this band
A friend turned me onto "Range Life" a few years ago and I was immediately in love. Hadn't really explored more of their work until now but that same feeling rings true for the album.
Very nice, but I feel like I need a little more time to chew on it. It could either end up a major grower, or lose its luster fast for me.
This was like teleporting back to the 90s. It's full of energy and classic indie rock. Nothing too fancy but very fun and enjoyable.
Pavement is right up my street. No Pavement on the street I live on though :/ Maybe someone should look into that
Really liked it
It's actually 'Sidewalk'.
I really enjoyed this one
This is pure 90s alternative. Really good songs.
An album I was already familiar with. One of the most underrated bands and here they are in great form with great song after great sonng
I liked this, grungy 90s
I dug this album. Nice short songs, kinda punk/indie/emo ish.
Really enjoyed this! A song added to my regular playlist too. Great music to work to. Look forward to hearing more from them.
I can hear the influence of this in other indie alternative bands, a fun listen and a new one for me.
mellow vibes, very indie rockie, some strokes, some straylight run, some modest mouse, overall recommend
Not bad- reminds me of blind melon.
Love the first track It's all pretty good, added a lot of the tracks to my regular playlist
I partially love this because I feel like I can hear the bands this inspired, and partially because it's a fun record. Jangly, lackadaisical, makes me want to smoke and lay in the sun. And dance like the singer from Cage the Elephant. Favorite tracks: "Unfair", "Gold Soundz"
It is not often that a band makes a massive leap from what they've done before but the early 90s was chock full of these occurrences, Pavement being a prime example. No matter how hard many want to label them as slackers and effortless everymen, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain proved that there was a band that was at least sincere and genuine in their craft, whether it was ramshackle or not. Crooked Rain would be a high point for most bands; for Pavement, it was only another day checked off the calendar. Favorites: Silence Kid, Stop Breathin', Cut Your Hair, Unfair, Gold Soundz, Range Life, Hit the Plane Down.
More melodic and enjoyable than slanted and enchaned, and overall I like the songs better. Pretty great album.
This iseems to be bridging the gap between rock I like and indie(?) rock which I ignore For some reason most of it just doesn't connect. "5-4=Unity" and "Hit the plane down" stood out for me, the rest sort of blended together.
Ok! Pleasant! A 3 point something but rounded down.
Fully of skuzzy guitar and apathetic vocals. This is a truly 90s indie rock album. It reminds me of my childhood and spending almost a weeks wages on a new CD that I would take home and listen to on my stereo whilst pouring over the sleeve notes (if you were lucky) and enjoying that plastic-y smell of the new CD box. It is quite a laid back album and Stephen Malkmus' vocals sound quite similar to Conor Deasy of The Thrills. Pavement is a example of a band that seem, in retrospect, to have achieved much less commercial success than you would have imagined that they could have. The stage was set for them to be a huge hit. But I guess that we listened to what MTV and the radio told us to listen to in the 90s. Making it big without label support was still a while away in 1994. But I can say that I enjoyed it this album even if it is 32 years after Pavement would have wanted me to. (3.333)
Pretty interesting - you can see how artists like this inspired modern bands like Geese. Definitely appreciated the variety
Didn’t grab me as much as their other album. A most 3 of 3s
I rather enjoyed Slanted and Enchanted - was less charmed with Crooked Rain Crooked Rain - despite its supposedly being the more accessible album. I think my main issue was I accidentally put on the triple album special edition of the album which went on for an eternity without much variation. The original release is much tighter once I realized my error unfortunately the damage had been done and my openess had been signficantly diminished. Its certainly not bad - I just did not find much joy within.
C'est assez basiques
C'est pas mal en vrai C'est pas mal en vrai Playlist pick Playlist pick : Cut Your Hair Cut Your Hair
I'm a sucker for an album that includes a song in 5/4. Overall I like this - funny that it came after smashing pumpkins yesterday. I think of these two bands in the same zeitgeist but I vastly prefer this album.
Chill album but incredibly generic.
i liked it, his voice was a little bit not good but it sounded nice
🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑 (rounded down because whatever) Much like Bone Machine, I kind of wish I'd found this album in high school, although only this one would've aged worse. I think this has a real nice wry, whiny teenage feeling to it that I can imagine really resonating with for several of these songs, although I think I'd get sick of them after many, many repeat plays. I already knew (and loved) "Cut Your Hair" and enjoyed "Stop Breathin'" a lot, but I can see myself listening to the entire album again and liking it more, which I plan to. Who knows—maybe I'll even edit this rating to be higher. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing
I liked this more than I thought, but I can't really say why? I liked the energy and really went back and forth on the vocals. Low 3.
pavement's 2nd best album
I enjoyed this. It's significantly better than Slanted and Enchanted. This one's got actual tunes and chunkier production. It's all a little ironic and detached to be close to my heart, but it has its moments.
5/10… 90s alternative / indie / *1994
Pretty cool indie rock
6/10 - It's alright, never heard of these guys before
Meh - not amazing. Like a poor man's Pixies.
I’m harnessing my hopes that this is good.
Few cool dark tracks but a few that felt very whiny American indie
I liked the kind of strange and experimental sound on this one. But some of it became a bit too reminiscent of jazz for me and lost me a bit Standouts 5-4=Unity 3/5
This won me over a bit. I never warmed to Pavement in the '90s, but now this sounds nostalgic to me. I still don't love the snotty Gen X lyrics, but they're authentic. The music is better than I remembered, and I bet they sounded great live.
I checked out the other album on this list from Pavement a while ago last year and it's pretty alright. This is kind of similar, not a bad indie album, strong 3 stars
Okay.
It’s alright nothing special
Liked it. Didn't love it. I generally find it hard to get into noise rock with the intentionally messy sound, but this wasn't noisy to an off-putting degree. 3.3
Thought this was another paid promotion to be on this list then I recognized the song cut your hair. Typical 90s alt rock. Nothing worth revisiting here
Not sure why this album doesn’t do it for me, since it is very close to what I like. I recognize it as good, but it doesn’t land for me. “Stop Breathin” has an interesting sound. I liked “Range Life” and “Hit the Plane Down.” Possibly it’s an album that would grow on me rather than the immediate “I really like this” if I gave it a few more listens.
The sheer apathy and lo fi slackness of 90s indie rock can be tough to swallow. That said, the album earns a pass because of its genuinely weird guitar tunings and cynical, left of center approach to pop songwriting. It is sloppy, but it is deliberately eccentric enough to keep things mildly interesting.
Mmm a little too whiny/grunge/garage for me
i like some pavement. but this one is not their strongest effort. not enough earworms. it ends on a high note with filmore jive. the blues running into rock is fine if not tepid. they feel like they are always oscillating between experimental and straightforward guitar rock. i wish they could settle. also, malkmus has one of the most distinctive indie dads that kinda cant sing vocals, and it doesnt feel like it pays off here. its less quirky and more tedious. i feel like their country lite album is stronger than this. oh well, its still just fine.
Solid Indie Rock, not sure what else to say about it really, its clearly an early cornerstone of the genre and sounds like a lot of what it inspired, so it feels blended today, but back then im sure it would’ve stuck out. Standouts are newark wilder, gold soundz, range life, Also streaming only has a massively extended edition of like 2.5 hours long so it was a tad annoying to see where the original album stops and where the extras start (its the first 12 tracks.), because i was not gonna listen to that monster.
soooo 90s. not much to say about this one, was a fun listen but have already forgotten it
Not as good as the other Pavement album on this list. Feels like they took some steps back.
This is some nice independent rock music I tell you what Highlights: "Silence Kid", "Cut Your Hair", "Fillmore Jive"
I've tried but I've never gotten really into this band. Not bad but a lot of hype
medicore at best
I may have herd of them - a good listen. Nice
Its fine.
I don’t really know, good but I almost fell asleep, I get why it’s called slacker rock. The singer had an interesting cadence. The expanded edition was so much songs. Decent 6
Awesome. Very much a reflection of the early emo scene. Reminds me of Modest Mouse in some ways, maybe even Wilco a bit.
Pretty good '90s alt-rock. No lasting impression though.
The rain is crooked indeed, but the tunes are straight up funky. It's like a lazy river of sound. Give it a listen if you're into that rough-around-the-edges kind of thing. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Cut Your Hair - Gold Soundz - Range Life
Meh. Bland version of Wilco. Listenable but probably not one of the 1001 albums to listen to before you die. Top tracks: 5-4 was a little groovy, range life was quite pleasant.
Pavement:Weezer::Coke:Pepsi
Was okay, but not spectacular
Drcrnt
First time listening to an entire Pavement album, and it took me back to college days and listening to skateboarders outside the door. I kept thinking that this album sounded like a more Weezer Weezer, if Weezer were truly an indie band. Liked it overall.
Straight up garage music. Rough around the edges with a lead vocalist who would not be allowed around a microphone these days. Fun.
Started ok, but feels like a less polished, more garagy Weezer or Velvet Underground that isn’t quite as good. Final song of the album turned me off with the off tune solo. Fave songs: Range Life
Great album, but not as good as the debut imo
This was probably more Pavement than I've ever listened too--and I've had my fill. Admittedly, I only gave this one listen, and this does strike me as an album that could grow on me with more listening. Yet, despite in general being a fan of a lot of indie rock, and various alt/noise-ish music, this didn't gel for me. I appreciate the experimentation, but don't feel like it coheres into something greater than the sum of its parts.
Not bad
Very even Goodness.
eh it was alright background music. I could tell it was good because unlike my previous album in this list, every song sounded different from the last Slow start but strong middle, and meh ending not bad slag not bad Gold Soundz 5-4=Unity Range Life
Didn't know these divas before today and I enjoyed
erste paar Lieder gut, dann aber eher abgeflacht.
Zwischen 2 und 4 bleibt nur die 3
Gold Soundz and 5-4=Unity are the highlights to this album. Every time I listen to Pavement I am always left with wanting more not being sure if that is good or bad. The singer is often slightly flat but I guess that's good since the guitars are often just out of tune as well.
Fun album with some great moments. Unfortunately, some songs here a bit too slow and uneventful for my taste. None of them are bad, mind you, just not nearly as good as some of the highlights. 7/10
Eh, no le eencuentro nadaaaaa Nota: 2.7
I might listen again ...
Ok - just nothing particularly exceptional about it - perfectly fine, but not sure why in the 1001
Wasn't unpleasant, but it was very boring. It sounded like the same song being played over and over again. There were some cool guitar moments here, but all in all a very mediocre experience. 2.5/5
After not liking the first Pavement album (at all), I was not exactly looking forward to this one. I found this record a lot more approachable and just overall a better listen. Didn't exactly fall I love, still a bit too heavy on the lo-fi apathy train, but I've got a better appreciation for the band.
Fav tracks: Elevate Me Later and Cut Your Hair
Their second album. Indie / Alt Indie. A bit middle of the road slacker rock. Neither bad nor great. Some good lyrics here and there. Felt like drop out stoner music. Like, whatever dude.
Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I don’t think I feel anything about Pavement Favorite song(s)? Cut Your Hair, Unfair Overall Thoughts: I guess this was my first time listening to slacker rock. It was a good listen but I probably won’t revisit.
I know Pavement is legendary, and that Malkmus is a genius, etc. But they have never done it for me. Just can’t get grabbed. Maybe it’s the whole tone of the thing, or Malkmus’ mumbly, off-key lyrics. Not charmed. But I know I’m in the minority.
I was really excited at the start of this record but my excitement waned a bit by the end of it. It's an alright album nonetheless!
5-4 klingt gut. Der Rest so lala.
Meh 90 s
It was pretty good in the moment, but not something I found all that memorable.
Not bad, not bad...starts fading into the background....
was ok nothing special not particularly original,
Still 90s alive and kicking
Eh. Not surprising this didn't catch on in the US. The early 90s had a lot of great music, and with it came a ton of very mediocre music trying to be great. This album is illustrative of this.
This was literally 1994 condensed into album format. It had that fuzzy guitar, that grunge sound. It's not the best grunge album of that year, but it's the most "grunge" album
I don't think that was 5/4 vro
Always a fan of this band, but not this album lol
Ikke dårligt men heller ikke rigtigt noget for mig
This was a cool album. Not a great one, but the vibes hit on some tracks. Slacker rock sounds about right. It's messy and loud and definitely unpolished and that's what makes it interesting. It was cool, but if I had listened to this as a kid I'd have liked it a lot more now. This wasn't something I grew up with and I don't super identify with it too much now, but if I had I know I'd have dug this really hard. It needs some time to marinate with me. Standout tracks were "Stop Breathin" and "Unfair." A solid listen, but an average 3/5 for me.
nie dla mnie (jak prawie każdy albym tutaj...)
Rock
Alt-grunge vibe
Neither here nor there
3.5 Stars
Pavement, c'est bon mais pas si bon. Cet album est bon mais pas si bon. C'est pas leur plus l'fun et c'est mal juste ça que je veux avec Pavement.
Ça ressemble à du Stephen Malkmus avec un moins bon band.
Super
Musically very enjoyable, but what is the deal with horrible vocals on indie records? 3/5
Good vibe, just kot really my style
I did like this, and it was borderline 4. Just don’t think I liked it as much as the last Pavement. Simpsons: No
Pretty catchy, melodic 90s indie rock.
Some really good stuff here. Can see why people like them. Probably in the 2.5 range.
Reminds me a bit of the Pixies, which is no bad thing. It was quite listenable for me
I've had problems getting into Pavement whenever I've listened to them in the past, but I enjoyed this album more than I expected to. I guess I've evolved :)
There were a couple of songs I liked enough to keep, but otherwise this album was meh to me.
At first I hated it, the singer left a pretty bad first impression but the more I listened to more it grew on me.
Hit The Plane Down may have bumped this album down a notch for me. But Gold Sounds was a blast from the past I was not expecting
Excellent rough and ragged alt-rock. I like that the production is loose and unpolished, but the songwriting has plenty of nice melodies. “Unfair” struck me as a particularly good hard rock song. Nice, grunge sound and a great hook. After hearing “Gold Soundz,” I’d bet a lot of emo bands count Pavement as an influence. I don’t usually hear the connection between 90s alt-rock and 2000s emo, but this made that connection for me today. Whoa, the jazzy style of “5-4=Unity” surprised me! This album is full of surprises. I like that there’s some piano mixed in on a few songs. It’s an underrated rock instrument. 3.5
Solid Pavement album. I've gotten more into this band in the past 3-4 years and I really enjoy their slacker classic indie rock sound. The clean guitars played loose and haphazardly are a cool element in the context of rock music, and the singer's voice matches that too. His lyrics always keep me on the edge of my seat too, like he's got some lyrical punchline up his sleeve that he's going to lay on me at any point.
This is kind of like a Weezer album without the traits of Weezer music that make it endearing
Good.
I totally forgot I listened to it after a week. Not bad but didn't leave a lasting impression.
If you ever wanted to have an example of 90s Alt- rock, just hand someone this album. I think this could’ve easily been the soundtrack of Reality Bites or some other movie during the time. Of their albums, this one felt the least garage band for me. I didn’t mind it, but I’m still not entirely a Pavement fan. The song Stop Breathing was my favorite because of the psychedelic rock feel. Other songs like Heaven is a Truck and Range Life weren’t bad, just very 90s. Overall, this was a pretty mid album.
Random thoughts: * Okay, so all you have to do to like Pavement is have it preceded by Joanna Newsom. lol * Well, after my review of Slanted and Enchanted a few weeks ago I wasn't expecting much on this listen. Maybe this is the gateway Pavement record. * I already knew "Cut Your Hair" and was pleased to hear it again. "Gold Soundz" and "Range Life" especially were good and fun. * One of the songs clearly had the melody of Buddy Holly's "Everyday" which was funny and weird to hear. Who can blame them? Buddy Holly is a legend worth borrowing from. * I liked listening to this album so much yesterday, I threw it on for my morning listen a second time today. Maybe I can still become a Pavement guy.
