Lähes lynchiläinen levy: 60-luvun makeiden harmonioiden taustalta alkaa pilkottaa jotain kummallista ja synkkää. Lisäksi LP (a) sisältää yhden ikiaikaisen hitin, ja (b) paranee jatkuvasti kuuntelun myötä, mikä kertoo hyvistä sävellyksistä. Ajatella, olin tulkitsemassa tätä kakkoseksi ennen kuin jokin veti minut takaisin.
This is the first time I’ve listened to this album as a whole piece, and I rather liked it a lot. None of the songs seem like filler and they all have a place, even the many covers. Simply a crisp, light, nice album. It’s pop with a tinge of psychedelic and they’re all great singers who wrote great tracks. California Dreamin’ is a classic 60’s jam that still sounds fresh 50+ years later, what a song. 4 stars
Love this album. Spanish Harlem and Gotta Feeling under-rated gems. While California Dreaming and Monday Monday classics for the ages.
My only qualm with this album is that there isn’t enough Michelle Phillips and Cade Elliot led songs. California Dreamin’, The “In” Crowd, and I Call Your Name are by far my favorite songs from “If You Can Believe You’re Eyes & Ears.” Michelle and Cass’ voices are so lively and beautiful, especially together. This album is a must listen to if you like 60s country/folk music.
Lovely 60s album. California Dreamin' carries though.
The mommas and the papas have mastered how to stay timeless and still make you feel like you’re in the room in them in ‘66
8.5/10 Great front to back album. Probably would be higher but the fact that this album has so many covers takes away from its genius for me. I know that’s the way of the 60s but it still didn’t hit the same as completely original works. Harmonies and the California sound really make this one for me and I love the incessant work that went into arranging this one. Favorite Song: California Dreamin’
that’s what I’m talking about!!
A very "nice" album. I don't really think, that this is great music. But it's so very nice, that I have to give it a "4".
Solid album with classic 60s sounds. Harmonies and vocals are wonderful. Lyrics are typical 60s
this is a pretty good example of bubblegum pop music from around this time, with mostly peppy lyrics and toe-tapping sounds. there's a bit of emotional stuff in here too. while i wouldn't say that this album is one of my favorites in terms of sound, it's pretty significant. i think probably one of the greatest aspects of the album, as well as the band itself is how they harmonize with each other, calling and responding in a satisfying way.
One of the goated songs, album will always be a vibe
Good album
Good songs, good vibes, good music. Always liked their singles, but never stopped to check out any albums. This felt like a good place to start. Cheers for the excuse.
I'm sure it's a great album but I was in a bad mood
I won’t spend much time describing this as it’s unlikely anyone with ears hasn’t heard most of these songs: it’s fairly standard 1960s American pop. Fortunately, it’s done really well.
Classic 60s, reminds me of Lost! 4/5
A rich and colorful record that had me feeling like I was laying in a field of flowers looking up at the sun. I enjoyed the variety on this record. Like I said, first you feel like you’re laying in a field then at other times you’re dancing by the water or floating through thin air. Along with many records from this era, it just has such a natural feeling to it. You can hear and feel every instrument and touch. Of course I’d listened to California Dreamin in the past as well as some others from The Mamas & The Papas but I don’t think I’ve ever played a whole record through. Boy am I glad I did! Truly a band for the ages. Favorites: Straight Shooter, Go Where You Wanna Go, California Dreamin
This album has 2 of my favorite M&P songs Monday, Monday and California Dreamin'. The rest of the album is pretty good. I have always been a fan of the layered harmonies that the M&P produced.
I can’t give any record with California Dreaming less than 3 stars. I did like this a lot. You can tell stereo was a newer thing because they used the shit out of it.
Catchy tunes...fantastic harmonies. Great folk rock.
Great time
These harmonies! California Dreaming makes me feel. Cass, we love you.
Sweet harmonies, I thought I knew this album but I was wrong
Still a good listen.
Ooh those harmonies.
I knew every single song. Their place in folk rock history is secure
Listened to this album before and really liked it.
Great debut and I especially love the soaring vocals on Go Where You Wanna Go.
Enjoyed it
I already am a little bit familiar with the Mama's and Papa's with their song "Dream a Little Dream of Me", which I love. Very good, chill album.
Pretty damn good for a first album. Several singles on here are their most popular and well-known songs. All the harmonies are really interesting, and the chord progressions can be surprising. All in all a solid effort.
It was a good listen. It would be a great album to listen to when you’re cleaning the house or just want to put on some easy listening type music!
So I thought this was bringing back some core memories, but then I realized I was thinking of the Carpenters. But this is good stuff. They worked the angle that they weren't the prettiest (and to be fair, I think a lot of popular music at the time didn't care as much about aesthetics as today). But what am I saying? I don't know! Listen to it! Or don't!
Solid album full of hits I remember from the "oldies" station as a kid. Nostalgia aside, this is still a great album.
love california dreamin, chill vibes feels like driving the coast kind of music
Never has a band been so sweet and perfect in the recording booth, and so toxic off the mic. So rarely do you get a group that checks off boxes for drug addiction, alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, a love quadrangle, and various misdemeanor arrests. The love quadrangle and cheating in particular makes the juxtaposition of smooth harmonies and the lyrics of a song like “Got a Feelin” seem almost agonizing. This album has challenged my preconception that The Eagles were the greatest vocal harmonizers of all time. Now, the record does take a bit of a dip after California Dreamin, where it starts feeling a bit repetitive, but I can’t sing it too much - because the final song “The In Crowd” was a nice pickup in energy and confidence. I can totally see this being a pop music revolution for its time, it even stands up to the impossible gold standard that is the Beatles/Beach Boys in the early 60’s (speaking of the beach boys, this version of Do You Wanna Dance is arguably better than the beach boys for me, its more intimate). Candy-sweet anthems that took the yearning of teenybopper music and elevated it to something slightly more mature with spectacular, tight vocal arrangements. Soft 4/5 stars!
another sweet gentle country folk album, It's a comforting listen.
They had a great vocal sound, really full and punchy harmonies combined with some decent (mainly) upbeat songs that makes this kind of music joyous and uplifting. You could say their sound is comparable to the Beach Boys, who also used the wrecking crew, but a bit more folky and possibly a bit more groovy. I saw one review describing them - positively - as scooby doo music and to be honest you could say that about a lot of the mid sixties pop groups, especially in the US. The saturated sound and dense production is pretty cool to these ears.
Delightful harmonies and classic covers. Really really enjoyable. I listened to these guys and girls a lot over the years.
Enjoyed much more than I anticipated. I liked the 60s pop, faux-innocence and heart-warming harmonies.
Lovely. I overlooked this album at first due to the title track being a bit dull, but I loved this!
It kind of puts me off when more than half of an album's songs are covers, but California Dreamin' Go where you wanna go and Monday, Monday are enough on their own to elevate this album to a solid 7.5/10. The beautiful harmonies don't hurt either. Fave track: California Dreamin'
Very decent, classic album with smash 'California Dreamin', which is just one of the best 60s songs.
Wonderfully dreamy
One of my most enduring childhood memories is listening to “Monday, Monday” on repeat during Monday morning school runs with my dad. It became our quirky tradition, thanks to one of those sprawling ‘60s compilation CDs he mailordered. Although the collection included a gazillion tracks, we always gravitated toward the one disc featuring two The Mamas and The Papas’ hits. That early exposure gave me a sense of the band’s velvety harmonies and Lou Adler’s lush production, which shine throughout If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears. The album captures the decade’s initial pop idealism, blending folk, pop, and jazz elements into sophisticated arrangements. From the melancholic, harmony-rich waves of “Monday, Monday” to the timeless charm of “California Dreamin’,” the high points remain exhilarating. Cass Elliot shines on the lively “Somebody Groovy,” and the dreamy “Got a Feelin’” shows off the group’s vocal interplay. I even admire the audacity of covering a Lennon/McCartney song (“I Call Your Name”) so soon after The Beatles’ original release. The Wrecking Crew’s tight rhythm section underpins these songs with precision, elevating the orchestrated production and emphasizing John Phillips’ knack for polished yet emotive songwriting. However, not every track has aged as gracefully as others. Songs like “Go Where You Wanna Go” and “You Baby” feel a bit more like period relics, with the instrumentation and arrangements sounding somewhat simplistic and dated compared to the album’s more timeless tracks. These moments lack the same level of sophistication found in the stronger songs, which feels especially evident when placed next to contemporaries like The Beatles or The Beach Boys, who were pushing the boundaries of production and songwriting during the same period. Adding to the album’s intrigue is the tension simmering beneath its polished exterior. By 1966, the group’s interpersonal dynamics were already fraught. John Phillips’ perfectionism clashed with Cass Elliot’s ambitions, and Michelle Phillips’ affair with Denny Doherty caused deep rifts within the band. These internal struggles undoubtedly affected the creative process. The band’s output may have been more consistent or successful without these distractions, but it’s also possible that the tension fueled some of the emotional depth in the music. Remarkably, this chaos didn’t infiltrate the recordings, as the group’s voices remained perfectly synced, with each member’s distinct tone contributing to a cohesive whole. While some tracks may feel tied to their time, If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears stands as a defining moment of ‘60s pop, a testament to the power of harmony—both musical and, fleetingly, personal. It’s a lush and heartfelt snapshot of an era, emblematic of its idealism even as the reality behind the scenes told a much darker story. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? Sure. Would this release make my personal list? No. Will I be listening to it again? For sure.
Good
I really liked this! Maybe not perfect, but a cool album for some good mood music.
So I always associate this band with the Zombies and both with standard summer of love fare - but while the Zombies have better singles, the records I heard of theirs were quite terrible, while this band has the singles AND the album fitting quite well together. So far out of the similar contemporary artists, this probably is the best representative record of the genre.
Iconic Americana, but had me wishing it was the beach boys instead
Best Song: Straight Shooter Worst Song: Spanish Harlem
So so so so good.
Pretty good, I liked this. I’ve heard a couple of their songs before but this was good
Like so many of these bands from way back I mostly know them through their hits. I've always liked 'California Dreamin' but for some reason I've never listened to pretty much anything else from "The Mammas & The Papas". Now that I have it turns out that I actually like it quite a bit Standouts California Dreamin' Somebody Groovy The "In" Crowd 4/5
So nostalgischer Klang und viel Chor, klingt so gut
8/10. California dreamin is one of the best songs ever written. The album encapsulates the sixties movement and is a nice easy listening album to throw on during a nice summer evening.
I have never listened to this album prior, but I was familiar with California Dreamin’, of course. My favorite song on the album is Monday, Monday and my least favorite would be Got A Feelin’. I would listen to some of the songs again. I love the album cover.
Loved the back to back 60’s albums. Again, there wasn’t a song I didn’t like so I won’t list the stand outs. All in all it was a great album if you like this era of music
Something I quite liked about this, which was unexpected. If I was around during the 60’s/70’s in America, this would probably have been the soundtrack to me joining a desert cult in California or Arizona. I’d like to think I’d get out before the killing and mass suicide years, but with nice music like this I’m not totally convinced I’d have had the autonomy to call it quits. If I did do something terrible, at least the soundtrack would have been lovely and warm. The above was written before I’d even got to California Dreamin’. I’d have definitely been culting for the long haul.
If lemon Fanta was an album, this would be it. Light, fun and almost sickeningly pleasant to listen to.. and before I knew it, I'd drank the whole 2 litre bottle. I went into this album without any prior knowledge or expectation.. but happily basked in the audible warmth of this sunshine pop.. almost to the point my skin started to crisp, and I wanted to get in the shade for a little bit. You can absolutely tell this album was made in the 60s, a more carefree and liberating time.. before Tom Hanks brought MAGA caps and AIDs to America decades later. This album felt like the musical equivalent to Fuaadh. In the unlikely event anybody reading this doesn't know who Fuaadh is, I'll briefly explain. Fuaadh is someone who has won the lottery of life, in the sense that he genuinely and sincerely, always seems happy. He's a boy born with a puppy's brain.. and I mean that in a totally complimentary fashion, and not as the title of a failed Channel 4 documentary. He likes humping stuff, chasing balls and is always happy. This album, is akin to just that. Now admittedly I'm too self-deprecating and predictably miserable by comparison to appreciate an album that is this objectively happy, in its absolute totality. From time to time I like a more sombre or introspective change of pace. More of a me problem than The Mamas and Papas.. although, it is just easier to blame your parents for your inherent shortcomings, and so, I'm rating them 4/5 stars.. they just cuddled and high-fived me a little too much throughout this album.
# Playlist Track - California Dreamin' # Notes - What is the deal with that cover?! 😁 - Cool vibes, impressive harmonies! - A pleasant listen through and through. Super cool that is their first album, too!
California dreamin’ is a 100000/10 song maybe higher, it’s one I attribute to an ex crush, I don’t know why but it’s just interesting how music can bring you to a certain time and place in your life. Hey girl and go where you wanna go were other highlights to me , Monday Monday is good but I don’t think it’s amazing the key success to the mama’s and papa’s is Mama cass who has this iconic haunting voice which makes every song work. It’s easy to group this in the same group as all the other iconic 60’s albums but considering the best bits come post 67 this is good for it’s time, a bit dated but solid 4/5
Very nice, very 60s, comfy musics!
Love Monday, Monday, BUT, is it too long of a song? Very short album too!
I hadn’t listened to a whole record from the before. I got more and more into it as it went along. One of those bands that I know from just a song or two that were overplayed but are better when you listen to the bigger output.
Those harmonies, my god. They elevate even the most middle-of-the-road cuts.
Really nice Californian style with great harmonies and arrangements. This was their first album and they had not quite realised what they had with Mama Cass so it is focused on the male voice with mainly female backing harmonies except for a couple of tracks. The harmonies aren't really "backing" since they are so much part of the songs. Some nice and some bad instrumentation choices but generally a really nice album.
Great album I enjoyed this a lot. Very warm, the craft and care of 60’s songwriting coming through. For 1966 this feels quite innovative - certainly up there with some of the Beatles studio work. Love the layers, they mean every second.
The hits — “Monday Monday” and “California Dreaming” — are among the best songs ever, but most of the rest drag a little. Still, with those two it can’t be less than a 4.
A classic, always a good listening, like in every classic :-)
12 songs, 34 minutes, yes please! 11 of those 12 are not bad, but California Dreamin’ is great and earns this a 4 all on its own
Solid 4, maybe it's nostalgia but I like the vibes. California Dreaming is one of those songs that sound timeless
Warm, enchanting, earthy, nostalgic 60s romance
The music of the 1960’s and 1970’s emphasized musicianship, songwriting and vocal excellence and harmony. It’s not easy to be great in all of these aspects but this band was. This album exemplifies these qualities and produced a signature sound and hits that have lasted close to six decades and still inspire young musicians.
I remember my mom having this album when I was very young. I thought their name was hysterical, and the songs just horrible. Listening to this album now I can truly appreciate how huge this must have been when it was released. Powerful vocals and timeless harmonies.
Enthält zwei Super-Ohrwürmer: Monday, Monday und California Dreaming Sonst ganz gut, melodisch, Flower-Power
Great vocal harmonies throughout, at its best when the songs have some bite
monday monday isch huuuere geil. sie so guet im badaaa badaaaa mache aber echt. ich weiss nöd was sie meined mit straight shooter. aber song slaaaappt. got a feelin fallt chli ab noch dene zwei banger I call your name isch au chli harmlos jetz im verglich. do you wanna dance. jo s goht gad. aber de song isch no cute. sie mega stereo time. nüt isch ide mitti. go where you wanna go isch coool. ALL THE LEAVES SIND BRUUUUUUN. automatischs vieri de song. ziitlos. hammer. spanish harlem arschhhh hahahah. aso cute aber jääääh. somebody groovy sehr cool und uuuultra 60er haha e person als groovy bezeichne chönt nöd 2 johr früener oder spöter sii. hey girl isch au chli arsch lol. aso sie singed super. aber jooo. you baby isch etz au keis meisterwerk. in crowd wieder super, lieb de bass. drums au geil und sie singed geeeil.
Classic
Folkish sunshine pop from the mid-60s but behind some of the easy sounding songs, there is some looming melancholy which I like. The music is just ok, but the vocal harmonies are amazing and so pleasing to listen to. The two megahits are outstanding, 'California Dreamin' is still one of the signature songs of the decade. It's a fun and good listen and a very good debut album by the band. Other songs I enjoyed a lot: Straight shooter, I call your name (a Beatles cover), Go where you wanna go, Somebody groovy.
This band is weird. Melodically is a bit repetitive but their voices are amazing together (we all know why). I appreciate their music a lot.
Great album, awful people.
Good classic music
Really liked this!! I feel like there’s always some darkness behind this sunshiny kinda music, and I like that a lot - California Dreamin’ is prime example of that! Also never knew that Jens Lekman’s Maple Leaves was built on a sample but I learned that listening to this! And that’s one of my all time fav songs!
I had the same Jen's Lekman realization that nick did! Cool album!
One of the GOATs
Groovy ✌️
Love it
Go Where You Wanna Go
Fun folk rock
3.5+/5

They sound so wholesome!
Magical nostalgia of a time I didn’t live
A good debut album. Two lasting orignal hits in Monday, Monday and California Dreamin'. The plentiful covers were okay - their versions didn't do anything better than their respective original versions.
Favorite songs: California Dreamin' I Call your Name
Really good! Pretty, and sweet. Strange listening to such a pretty album knowing some of the crazy stories about the band that created it. My top 3: 3. Go Where You Wanna Go 2. Straight Shooter 1. I Call Your Name
love it when hits hit after hit
Beautiful vocal harmonies, warm production and fun. This album is better than most other 60's records I've heard thus far. Really happy with the runtime too.
3.8 - Easy listening goodness, but not much more than that honestly.
I Think it was Nice and obviously well made. It had some good ones not all will be my kind og Music. I Think there was something about it when they sang together that made it Sound very old. Still good tho - no sending that.
Solid album! I think that I am a fan. I can't imagine what the world was like when this came out.
How perfect for this to be dropped on a Monday.. with the first song being “Monday, Monday”!! Love this album. Definitely a classic. Easy listening and catchy tunes.
Good album.
This is the type of music I think of when I think of the 60s.
This captured the best Beatles vibes but better as there are women. Favourite track: Straight Shooter.
Monday Monday and California Dreamin - mega influential. Beatles-like in some ways, but the two songs at the top are there for a reason
This isn't exactly the kind of oldies I go back to regularly (more of a Motown and classic rock kind of guy) but I'd be liar if songs like California Dreamin' and Straight Shooter aren't classics. The harmonies and production are on point but it doesn't change the fact that this isn't my thing.
Surprisingly good. First time hearing to this band. Favrorite track: California Dreamin other picks: straight shooter, spanish harlem, somebody groovy
Good vibes.
beginning was beatles vibes. Then it got to california dreaming and vibe totally changed.
Just good, clean fun.
Thoroughly enjoyable
Good asf
Clean harmonies that ring out, that whimsical psychedelic atmosphere, and lyrics with a bit of a subversive undertone. About as good as 60s groups of this time get for me. California Dreaming is so representative of the sound and feeling of the era. The album offers a lot for only 35 minutes of your time. Very well put together.
Måske ikke den mest spændende Nick Cave
reminds me of growing up and hearing my mom play The Mamas & The Papas on the stereo while she was mopping <3 i really liked it!
Classic 60’s songs, with Mama Cass’s amazing vocals. Loved it.
Love this album. Such a 60s sounds that hold up after all these years
Good album
Really nice little album - 60s acoustic vibes
3.5
Fun album! Lots of their classic hits here.
Not really my thing, but very well done even so.
Cool
Got some good hits. 60s classic
Enjoyed this. Saved for listening again.
Excellent debut album by this group with a troubled history. Four talented vocalists and some great, timeless songs on this album including "California Dreaming" and "Monday, Monday" Some good covers too like "Spanish Harlem". A 4 rating just because of the timeless songs.
it opens with monday, monday <3 Love me some mamas and the papas, but never heard an album of theirs as a whole. Very sad all the shit that was slung at Mama Cass. A few covers here, which was happening a lot in the 60s, but loved hearing the harmonies these guys added to these songs; fresh takes. 4* Highlights: monday monday, california dreamin, go where you wanna go, spanish harlem
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background I wouldn't say every song is a banger, but Monday, Monday and California Dreamin' alone push this to a 4 for me. Love the harmonies on both of those. The rest of the album is pleasant enough and it clocks in at just over 33 minutes so it doesn't wear out its welcome.
Go Where You Wanna Go was already a favorite, along with California Dreamin' and Monday, Monday (though the latter is a tiny bit too dreary for me). It was fun to discover a few more that I really enjoyed, especially Straight Shooter. The rest of the album did drift fully into dreariness, although the gorgeous harmonies make the full album listenable, even if not every song is a favorite.
the parents made some hits!!!
Big sound and singing talents.
excellent album....
Hard to say anything bad about these beautiful harmonies. I instantly felt like I should be on a beach having fun. The songs themselves are pretty formulaic but it’s still an enjoyable listen.
Vocally this is fantastic - the two female voices are quite different but equally distinctive, and they just complement each other perfectly. Musically I found it quite sparse, but maybe that was intentional to let the voices do the talking (no pun intended). Plenty of classic tracks, both originals and covers. It's easy to see why this album is so highly lauded by lots of people.
I thought that this was going to be a really boring and forgettable generic sounding 60s album, but turns out it's actually a really fun and enjoyable generic sounding 60s album.
Some classic tunes - stood the test of time - forgot how influential they were
What a cool album. I thought I’d only ever heard one of their songs, the one we’ve all heard - “California Dreamin’,” but I’d actually heard more and just never knew it was them. Made me wonder how many of their songs fit that description. Anyway I really enjoyed this one. Fun folk rock with some classics. They didn’t all hit but the ones that did we fantastic. Four stars. Standout Tracks: Monday, Monday, Straight Shooter, I Call Your Name, California Dreamin’
So glad I have now heard this album! I’d only known a couple of hits, but their melodies and lyrics are slamming in spite of the fuddy duddy sound.
Harmony: The combination of simultaneously sounded musical notes to produce chords and chord progressions having a pleasing effect. This band is the best representation of harmony in physical form. This album not only has the obvious gems in 'Monday, Monday', 'Go Where You Wanna Go', or 'California Dreamin' but tracks such as 'Got a Feelin', 'Spanish Harlem' and 'The In Crowd'.
Some really great singles on here - especially California Dreaming...such a good song. I really liked how they layered the vocals and changed up the main vocalist between tracks.
Excellent album. The only song I'd already known before listening was California Dreamin', but I enjoyed pretty much all of it. 4 stars
Solid album, with their own songs being the strongest and the weakest contributions. The covers are mostly good by being unique, except for “You Baby,” which is a poor knockoff of the original.
I literally was reading about the Cass ham sandwich myth the day before so this feels like providence. Pretty fucked up that one of the few famous large women of the time gets that kind of treatment post mortem. I digress. This is a pretty good pop album! I don’t know why people were like WOW HOW TRANSGRESSIVE AND PROGRESSIVE! It’s uh. It’s a pop album. A great one! It sort of suffers from being so influential and good that it almost sounds generic. Suffering from success. Anyway. Hey don’t read what Papa John is accused of. It’s fucked up. Arguably the worst human being included on this list? Anyway. 4 stars, I’d listen to some of these songs again
there’s just something specific about this flavor of 60s pop that i find endlessly endearing. great album with little fluff
Great album. i had heard some songs before but never the whole album.
Some of these songs still hold up well almost 60 years later. Some truly impressive harmonizing.
Despite a terrible band name, worse album title and an all time BAD album cover, this still delivers fully in terms of 60s dream pop rock
So calming and serene. Straight shooter is my favorite but also really like Call Your Name and others like Got a Feelin. Good old school, carefree stuff.
pretty enjoyable fave track: california dreamin’
Listen to it again
California Dreamin' is a god damn 10, the rest is good too
First off, I am always fascinated that Mama Cass and Keith Moon died in the same hotel room 4years apart. I am also amazing that the entire run of Mamas&Papas was four years. I appreciated M&Ps because they were a straight-edge vocal group but also hippie; classic folk but progressive lyrics; rock but not rock at the same time. This album was a great example. Key songs for me: Monday, Monday; Go Where You Wanna Go; Beatles cover I Call Your Name; and California Dreaming is one of the best songs from the entire era. Have listened to and will listen to again! (I may be underrating this one).
Fun listen! Obviously some classics here like Monday, Monday and California Dreaming. I was surprised by the covers here especially of the Beatles "I Call Your Name". I also enjoyed "Do You Wanna Dance" and "Spanish Harlem". I can see why people romanticize the 60s. How could you not swoon if new music like this was coming out every other day?
Liked this oldie. Very ground breaking!
The Mamas & The Papas. If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears" pourrait paraître presque sage.
The Kings and Queens of 60's harmonies. What a change to hear "Do you wanna dance" sung as a love song. Beautiful. I have always been appreciative of the Mammas and Pappas, and do already own one of their albums on vinyl. This one is a great offering. But to be fair I just don't feel I can give it a 5. It just doesn't have that extra something ALL the way through. So 4 it is.
Loved this. Obviously knew the singles, but the rest was top notch stuff. Very much a Beatles meets Beach Boys sound. What is not to like? Great harmonies and pop tunes. My only gripe is that it was only 34 mins long. A 4 star. Could have been a 5 if it was something I would turn to more often, but certainly lifted my grumpy achey self from the dumps.
Geez, If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears was quite a bit better than i was expecting so as you can guess i can't believe my ears, i can believe my eyes though. Anyways, all jokes aside, These songs were surprisingly groovy and fun while still having good melodies and rhythms. I also like that effect in California Dreamin' (i know its in this song, it might have been in the others and i wasn't paying attention) where the male vocals are on one side of the headphones and the female vocals are on the other side, I actually did think that was a pretty cool idea. The vocals are great too, of course. I was expecting this to be a typical 60s album but these guys did quite a lot to set themselves apart and this album shows. Best Song: Somebody Groovy Worst Song: I Call Your Name
Can’t go wrong with the M’s and P’s. Solid classics.
The whole album is a fun vibe, not sure what genre of music this is called (looked it up: folk rock, pop rock, sunshine pop...huh). "Monday, Monday" is not only catchy but also eloquently sets the stage for what the album will bestow: melodic love songs. With themes of dancing, romance, break-ups, perhaps this was a feel-good record for youth of the 70s to throw on in a time to grasp with these emotions. "Straight Shooter" holds true to these aforementioned themes and is arguably more catchy and certainly more lively than the opening "Monday, Monday". "California Dreaming" is perfection. Certainly carries a strange melancholy tone. To quote some guy on Reddit: "All those minors and sevenths. They build a beautiful but haunting structure." The melodies in all the songs, coupled with background vocals are enjoyable. Its like a serenade. "You Baby" felt like i head it before in the album. I felt at this point the formula for the songs had gotten repetitive. This song was okay. "The 'In' Crowd" begins with a rugged vocal intro. This approach completely throws my previous statement and that song formula completely out the window. I enjoyed it.
I guess I knew more songs from this group than I previously thought. Good tunes.
3.5☆/5 06.25.2024
4.5
I'm really enjoying this, it feels very Beach Boys but with more crooning. Straight Shooter, Hey Girl, and The "In" Crowd may be my favorite songs. The album manages to get a little same-y even with its 34m runtime, so I probably couldn't listen to this all the time, but I did like it a lot. 7/10, I've added a few songs to my playlists.
I love folky music and vocal harmonies so Mamas and Papas is right up my street. Slightly simplistic songs beyond the vocals with the guitars and other parts not hugely interesting but the songs are nice and the hits sound great
I knew a lot of these songs but had never listened to this album before. Great album
This was a great album, it’s always so peaceful listening to them Top Tracks: Monday Monday, California Dreamin’
At least one amazing song
Well, California Dreamin' is a daily staple in our house.
The harmonies are gorgeous, as expected. The style is more varied than I would have expected. A lot of the music is enjoyable but kind of sleepy. I wasn't ready for them to go as hard as they did on "Straight Shooter" — it's a great song, although it's a total ripoff of "Ticket to Ride." I also wasn't expecting them to go more ragtime/blues like on "I Call Your Name." "Spanish Harlem" sounds like a quirky Beach Boys song (a la "Kokomo"). I do prefer their more psychedelic songs to the more traditional 50s-style choral ballads and mid-tempo songs, but the others aren't bad (maybe a little boring sometimes). The best songs are the singles "Monday Monday" and "California Dreamin." "Straight Shooter" and "You Baby" are probably the next best songs. I wish John Phillips wasn't such an atrocious human, because the music is pretty good. It's not perfect, but I'd give it a 4/5.
wow this is awesome, i love music like this
Great harmonies, and California Dreamin' was a banger
This is exactly what I picture playing at the opening/end credits of a movie, and each song has its defining factor, but they can blend together sometimes. I will have to take a deeper look at some of the lyrics as I believe it’s got some deeper meaning at points but overall just a vibe solid 6.5/10 album
Very good with lots of classics Monday Monday California dreaming Spanish Harlem The "In" Crowd
califronia drieamng? curtin primary choir is that you?
60s pop/rock tends to have a similar sound where it all kind of blends together for me, and I’m generally not a big fan. While this album likewise feels a little generic, for whatever reason, I enjoyed it more than some of its peers; I think having female vocalists helped, and I liked the layered harmonies (even if it feels a bit dated/gimmicky). Of course, I think “California Dreamin’” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. 3.5 rounded up. Favorite tracks: California Dreamin’, Monday Monday, Got A Feelin’
Good. Lou Adler produced. Big 60’s sound
Songs and content are notably simplistic and repetitive, yet the vocal performances manage to elevate them through harmonization and occasional subversion of expectations. Despite lacking intellectual depth, there are still concepts here that speak to shared human experiences, even if they’re only probed at a surface level. At the end of the day their sound is irresistible despite its shortcomings. Listened to: going to Coney Island. Favorite tracks: California Dreamin’, Somebody Groovy, You Baby
Great harmonies. Interesting Psych in the sixties vibe.
beautiful.
Solid 60's grooves. Monday, Monday and California Dreaming are enough to earn it 4, but the rest was pretty good as well. Spanish Harlem perhaps felt a bit out of place, but I enjoyed it.
Feels good.
I'm a sucker for harmonies
I really liked it! I was already familiar with them and a couple songs, so it was nice to hear the whole album.
I can dig it.
Great album, with great vocals that feel so nostalgic and so right. California Dreamin' is the star of the show, but the whole album was pretty good.
★★★★½
Most 60's groups had three choices: copy the beatles, copy the beach boys, or sexually abuse minors. These guys changed the game and did all three- Four stars!
Awesome! This group has such a cool distinct sound. I like Spanish Harlem and of course California Dreamin
01) Monday, Monday - 10,0 02) Straight Shooter - 8,0 03) Got a Feelin - 8,0 04) I Call Your Name - 7,5 05) Do You Want to Dance - 7,5 06) Go Where You Wanna Go - 8,0 07) California Dreamin' - 10,0 08) Spanish Harlem - 8,5 09) Somebody Groovy - 8,0 10) Hey Girl - 7,5 11) You Baby - 7,0 12) The 'In' Crowd - 7,0 TOTAL: 8,08 (81/100) Current Ranking: 63/178 "California Dreamin'" is one of those timeless songs, one wonders how it didn't reach the top of either the US or UK singles charts. "Monday Monday" is also a huge hit, and for those two songs alone this album deserves a higher rating. The rest of the album is not at that level, there are some solid songs and beautiful harmonies, but also a few unnecessary covers.
Classic California in the late 69’s sound.
The harmonies are absolutely incredible (take THAT auto-tune). The songs are great. But the guy’s daughter says he had sex with her while she was unconscious (19 yrs old) and they had a sexual relationship for years after. It’s pretty hard to listen without prejudice with that information.
Ice
Good album. It's the Mamas and the Papas
"Monday, Monday" and "California Dreamin'" are of course the bangers. The rest of it is surprisingly summery and delightful.
Here's the deal with me and pop music from the 1960s: most of the time it is just not my jam. I'm not talking about any of the psych-freakout music — whether it be folk or rock. I'm not talking about R&B or Rock 'n' Roll. I am talking about the pure pop with its attention to vocal harmonies and excellent studio musicians backing the song all dressed up in a mostly US West Coast package. I'm not down with 60s sunshine and good vibes most of the time, but when I want to surf that wave this is one of the records that satisfies every time.
Had my hopes set higher than delivered here, nothing bad but nothing life changing either. California Dreamin' is a clear 10/10 song though
I love the mama's and the papas so there's no way this was going to get less than four stars from me and with songs as iconic as "California Dreaming", there's no reason it should.
The only good thing to come out of incest.
Iconic band for me hippie times Solid 4 for me
A few really good songs, mostly just eh
Classic and solid work. A real snapshot in time.
feel good folk rock with admittedly dated references. however, the otherworldly harmonies, which are what the mamas and the papas are known for, are top notch. this one is a classic. highlights: “monday, monday” “california dreamin’ “ “spanish harlem”
Don't read up on the Mama's and the Papa's. Just... ...don't. Purely for the songs, this is four-star album, though.
Not really my deal, but this edges to a four on account of a few factors: First, there are some genuinely great songs - some cool arrangements, and better than decent lyrics. Second, you've got the harmonies - pitched somewhere between folk and Motown, they are impeccable and huge. It's like they hit a resonance and just glide, sounding more than just four people. Lastly, Cass Elliot's voice alone is a thing of beauty. When she's pushed to the fore in the mix, it's a real treat. Quite surprised that 'In Crowd' is the same track I've heard Bryan Ferry crooning, sounding like a dissolute iguana.
Man this album is great. Some all time classics on this one. Listen to this album and then watch some yt videos. They are infinitely more groovy than what we have now. When I was in 1st grade I had a pair of couderoy bell bottoms. They were the best pants I've ever owned.
Those voices together. Even in the songs that were less interesting compositionally, those harmonies just carry it all home
The best part of this album’s the arranging and both of the big hits Monday, Monday, and California Dreamin’ are quality. The harmonies on the rest of the songs are lovely, and the orchestration is great too. This is folk music, making raised to a high standard by vocal and orchestral arrangers who know what they’re doing and singers who can pull off this work with ease. The chord choices colour the otherwise simple songs and the use of chromaticism adds colour that takes this album out of the rock-folk genre and puts in a class of its own, while staying rooted in simple music Between The Mamas and the Papas and the Beach Boys, This kind of lush harmony really took off in this time. If there is a fatal flaw on the album, it’s the heavy use of reverb which actually muddies the musicality and dates the material to a particular era. Even so, they hits from this album, are timeless. Drugs, sex and longing never sounded so sunny.
Most of the album is a 3-star one but California Dreamin’ alone elevates it to a 4.
Good
Great album front to back, it's been a while since I've listened to any Mamas and Papas but, this was a fun listen.
Easy Listening and relaxing
Enjoyable listen from start to finish
Love the Mamas and the Papas, some great songs on this album but not ALL my favs
Solid bangers
first listen this is great
For the album cover, definitely 5⭐️, and to be honest, I think they could’ve fit one more person in for sure. For the album itself, love the sound, beautiful memories about some tunes.
Great classic 60s album, with clear influences from The Beatles' early stuff in some of the tracks, especially Straight Shooter. So many familiar songs, including a few I hadn't appreciated were by them, like Spanish Harlem and The 'In' Crowd. And of course the melodies and harmonies of California Dreamin' and Monday, Monday are divine. Favourite track: You Baby (reminds me of Let Her Dance by The Bobby Fuller Four)
Monday, Monday – 4.5 Straight Shooter – 4.5 Got A Feelin’ – 3.5 I Call Your Name – 4 Do You Wanna Dance – 4 Go Where You Wanna Go – 4 California Dreamin’ – 5 Spanish Harlem – 4 Somebody Groovy – 4 Hey Girl – 3 You Baby – 3.5 The “In” Crowd – 3 Average – 3.87 (4) Hippie Shit
Great sound production, some cookie cutter record label additions but overall maintains a clear theme/sound that defined the late 60s
This was fun. Vibrato kind of over the top, but as Grandpa Simpson would say "that was the style at the time".
Only just now realizing what a great band name that is for young people, haha. Although I wonder if those apostrophes are grammatical errors? 😂 Anyway, I have a soft spot for 'oldies', reminds me of car rides with my mom. California Dreamin' is the shit, but def not the only banger on here. All just feels warm and positive.
listened 3x. solid 3.9/5
Mega hyggelig! Nogle fantastiske numre
Fremragende!
Great group and darn good album
The Mothers and The Fathers epitomized everything the ‘60s was shifting to sonically. Not saying that every song here was successful in that sound (there are some definite better ones than others), but everything on here is essentially a template that combined what was done before and what was to flourish as the psychedelic age progressed
Pretty good overall. I knew 3 of the songs pretty well and was pleased by this album. Again, another band I had never really listened to an entire album from. The songs that I knew were from the radio and soundtracks. Most albums seem to end with weaker tracks. Not so on this album. I thought the last two song were the best. A pleasant surprise.
Great album
The sort of album where you go in expecting very little, progressively realise you know half the songs and they RULE, and end with a sense of serenity. Good stuff.
Some of the songs I liked a lot, some of them didn’t seem as substantial Torn between 3 and 4
groovy baby!! ok sorta hokey too but i liked it
Strays into sleepy folky a few times, but more than makes up for it elsewhere. Slowed-down "You Can't Do That" cover is superb; slowed-down "Do You Wanna Dance" loses something. Same-tempo "Spanish Harlem" is as pretty as it was written. And yes, the "California Dreamin" flute solo is still sublime.
I was not not the soft rock/folk music when it originally cam out but I learned to appreciate it over the years. I did come to really like the Mamas and Papas. Great harmonies, great instrumentalist and some really good writing. Even the covers they did brought something unique. Some of their best songs are on this album.
Totally pleasant! Mood boosting stuff that. Warm harmonies and an iconic recording style of the era which I always like
Perfectly pleasant nice stuff. Would be 3 stars but California Dreaming is just too good it gets a whole star for itself.
Their harmonies are unparalleled, and the hits here (such as "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday") are flawless snapshots of the '60s. That said, there are some filler tracks in there, between covers and otherwise less than notable numbers. Overall, though, it's a cozy listen. Too bad the monster that is John Phillips is involved.
The good ones are sublime, the other ones are good. Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips are amazing vocalists 🤩
Went back and forth on whether to rate this a 3 or 4, but landing on 4. I can hear mom singing along to California Dreamin’ - major nostalgia factor here!
Solid mid 60s album that is unfortunately marred by what we know about the band mates.
From folk-pop hits to messy and disturbing relationships, The Mama's & The Papas music embodies a lot of the culture of the 1960s. While the album feels old now, you can't deny that they made plenty of hits on their debut "If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears". Best Songs: Got a Feelin', California Dreamin', Somebody Groovy Worst Songs: You Baby
This has great 1966 energy. You can’t help but like it.
Surprisingly pleasant album. Nothing remarkable but enjoyable throughout. Decent 7
I knew a few of these songs going in and was pleasantly surprised. Very good. Not quite a 5 for me but I did consider it.
Classic M&P
3.5/5 Best Track: California Dreamin'
Einige Hits! Sehr oldschool
Gewoon lekkah
This was good. Easy listening. Great harmonies. I have always wanted to hear more than their big songs. Choice cut: California Dreaming
Man, they did record some amazing pop albums in the 60s!
This was groovy and had a nice sound! Might return to it.
Not bad, a few songs I recognised!
Hit or miss. Mostly hit though
Great group, great album!
God stemning og relativt kort. Meget Beatles vibes
Well produced hit making album. 👌
Liked this more than I expected to. It’s more mid 60s jangly folk rock but the songs are solid, catchy and I’m a sucker for a harmony. Discovering so many contemporaries of the Beatles is also making me realise more how special they were, considering they basically pioneered this movement and achieved what they did in just 5-6 years. But I enjoyed this one twice and will keep a few highlights on rotation.
Great harmonies and a very unique style.
The album was NOT mixed for headphone gurlies 😩 (which, I mean, it wasn’t so that is no one’s fault) I really enjoyed the sound of this album - beautiful harmonies, fun melodies, sone really good songs. California Dreamin just simply is an all time classic!
60s fun in the sun vibes. Didn’t loveeeeee it, some songs were pretty boring. Harmonies on every single song slay the boots House down. Liked Monday, monday, and Somebody groovy. California dreaming is obviously one of the best songs of all time Like will listen everyday all day.
Interesting journey of the folkies. These cats lived ludicrous lives. Cool harmonies and tight wrecking crew? Backing. I think its big hal blaine on drums. CA dreaming strong non-tull case for flute rock
It's a pretty fine album overall that's **really** elevated (by a whole star, even) by the presence of "California Dreamin'". Like, imagine how this album would play without it; imagine if Barry McGuire **did** end up recording it—and y'get it, right? I mean, if all the hype sticker covering the toilet had to bring up was their cover of "I Call Your Name"...
A nice, simple, and groovy collection of pop tunes that have some lovely vocals. Short, but oh so sweet.
Perfect 60s music with big hits on it. 9/10
2 gigantic movie hits in California Dreamin and Monday Monday but I also really enjoyed the energy this album brought. 60's albums that manage to bring that happy go lucky vibe while singing about serious subjects are always great. 8/10
Two absolute bangers that defined the 60s and a bunch of wholesome tunes. 7/10
Pure ear candy that doesn't matter.
Awesome.
Great vocals harmonies with nice folk rock backing
❤️❤️❤️
Major slay
Classic 60s album!
The Mama’s & the Papa’s represent an era and a whole genre of music from the 60’s. Their music, which can be considered folk-rock and sunshine pop, is iconic for the California hippie vibe. “California Dreamin’” and “Monday, Monday” are smashing hits from this album.
About half of these songs have aged into cliche, but just because they’re pretty good.
Great 60s album
Schöne Zeitreise in die 60er.
Slick, easy listening
two great ones on here
Catchy album. Didn't know them outside of California Dreaming, but there's great harmonies across the board. And cool changes of style from the 60's pop vibe, to a swing.
Love those harmonizing voices.
B+ Monday, Monday 5 Straight Shooter 4 Got A Feelin' 5 I Call Your Name 5 Do You Wanna Dance 4 Go Where You Wanna Go 3 California Dreamin' 5 Spanish Harlem 4 Somebody Groovy 3 Hey Girl 3 You Baby 3 In Crowd 3 This is a classic 60s album and one of the few albums on here that I own on Vinyl. Hip, hip, hooray!
not bad
Wud have gotten a 5 star. But their best is the 16 greatest hits. We know greatest hits aren’t really albums per se. But that one is awesome😀
Pretty good
Pretty enjoyable! I can definitely see my self revisiting this in the future.
Bangin, production, writinng, melodies, tracks, slappin
I can’t believe my eyes quand je vois l’affreuse pochette. Lovely.
Great harmonies. Alfa Beatles cover. California Dreamin’ is amazing.
California dreamin' mostly but I've given worse a 4
A classic, many hits, pretty dark lyrics on a bed of jangly hippie tunes
Nobody Papas like The Mamas
Good album. California Dreaming is one of the all time best
