Reviews (page 4 of 13)

California Dreamin is basically THE song of the 60s. This album has a few other great songs as well.

Lovely

Awesome 60s pop

I would listen to all if these songs in a funky mood

Finally we have some peak up in here first one i added and i added multiple mamma's and pampas quite nice sounding and relaxing so only main playlist not boogie playlist still fire peak wow

monday monday peak peak california dreaming already had and it is peak straight shooter also peak this is crazy ive never thought so many songs were peak before i would add got a feelin but its not for me that much but i respect it the girl on the album cover laying is so mog i call your name is also peak honestly most of the songs are peak dude somebody groovy is so peak peak peak songs added : 7/12

On a Monday Monday morning this one strolls in...how apropos. Couple bangers and some mediocre covers give this one a 4 of 5 from this child of the 60s. These 4 artists give a master class in harmonies, to be rivaled only by a few other of my fave groups. And yes, I did practice hard to play that flute interlude in California Dreamin'. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Loved it. Saved several tracks. Listened before? Y Saved tracks? Y Favorite tracks? Monday, Monday; California Dreamin'; I Call Your Name;

Quintessential of the decade it was released in. So many hits on this album! I enjoyed the stereo sound and harmonies. Glad to have given it a listen. (4)

The Mama's And The Papa's = more music that I've heard enough of in my life. After listening to a lot of music from the 60s during this project (my Spotify profile already says I'm 74), I actually understand the folk rock hype of that era very well. Still, I find this sound a bit boring after a while. “Monday, Monday” and “Go Where You Wanna Go” are still good songs, but certainly not timeless. The latter, however, applies to “California Dreamin',” which is indeed brilliant. Another album that should be heard, but not necessarily listened to repeatedly.

not my genre but not bad at all

Didint know they made "California dreaming"

California dreamin carrea

Nice, perhaps too nice. But California Dreamin gets it a 4

such a sunny album. Really liked this one :)

great content, California Dreamin is a longtime fav but hadn’t listened to any of the others before, I’m a fan :) might have to make Monday Monday my alarm for mondays it’s very relatable, also low key want do you wanna dance to play at my wedding

this is not my fav album from them but still fun! the music is happy and warmed me up this morning

One of the most iconic bands through the years, they do have a unique sound, mixing well blues and soul, and a bit of country amazing bar despite their disturbing background

Liked it. The melody is oddly comforting and a lot of the lyrics speaks out to me.

They have such a unique sound, the production quality is terrific. Love their harmonies and dreamy arrangements.

This is like being with your calm best friend who is light-hearted, a bit woo woo in a great way, and flows through life.

God, I love the harmonies. This album comes immediately to mind when thinking of the period in history, like a sunny day on a roadtrip to California. Don’t understand the inclusion of certain instruments at certain times. Maybe I’d do a better job high. Also, as a lesbian, women’s voices on love songs about women is always appreciated. Rest in peace, Cass Elliot <3

Short. Comforting. You realise how many of these songs are classics that I’ve heard in TV, film and on the radio over the years. I’d listen again. Maybe next time in summer!

Great album like all the songs and loved the harmonies. My top three songs were California dreamin, you baby, and straight shooter. The worst which wasn’t bad it just didn’t stand up against the rest was do you wanna dance. I also loved the Beatles cover of I call your name.

Hit me the right way. California Dreamin' is an all-timer.

Favorite Track: California Dreamin

Pretty good, grandma music

great album 8/10

6.3/10 California dreaming brought this album up a lot for me

They stomp-clapped so the Lumineers could hey

I love good harmonies. is strait shooter about heroin?

Great album !

An album filled with great tunes. Great harmonies. A very good album overall.

We had the album growing up and it has some fantastic tracks and some that sound pretty dated. The first two tracks epitomize this. It is still great to hear the harmonies. For me, I call your name, is the definitive M&P song, with the sadness and whimsy they put into their work, the great sound they made together.

Classic album, a must listen. Not even my thing, but the harmonies are unbelievable.

This album (IYCBYEAE for short, of course) was actually way more fun that I thought it would be. I recognized a few tracks and enjoyed all of the others. It sounds a little dated, but all the harmonies still sound great of course. This was a debut record, and a pretty great one at that. Its crazy how prolific these guys were for only 3 years, but sounds like strong personalities and talents cut them short in their prime (I gather from doing minimal research). Standouts on the album for me are "Monday, Monday" "Go Where You Wanna Go" and "Somebody Groovy." There are great vocals/lyrics, decent sounding music, but there was something catchy about most every track on the album. It's a surprising 4/5 for me, I would love to give this another listen or two and soak it in.

Not sure where they were when they were dreaming of California, but I wish I'd been with them. Musically satisfying with lyrics that speak of big-heartedness and soul. Would listen again.

Don't mind it but there's good reason they're known for hits and not more.

Harmonic bliss from a group that left more questions than answers.

me he guardado varias

Nothing like hiring California dreaming full volume after a long time. Actually fun listening to the whole thing

Fun, with a few notable hits. Added to my library.

Another good one. That’s survived time

Listens: 4 Standout tracks: Monday, Monday, California Dreamin', Spanish Harlem, Do You Wanna Dance A good mix of Americana, quartet barbershop, folk rock and psychedelica. Very much a product of the time. Mid 60s. Hippie revolution. Beatles-mania. These mamas and papas sound just like the Beatles. Not every song is about love, women, or relationships, so that's a plus. This gets high marks in my book. Its easy to consume, well put together and left a lasting impression.

Just like the Beatles

This album song after song was able to stroke a cord for me . Did not feel the urge to click next once therefore I would elevate this group up close to top shelf

Decent vocal harmonies, California dreamin is obviously peak AF and everything else is really good

California Dreaming is still the best song on the album by far. But I enjoyed this a lot, like a psychedelic beach boys.

Hits a lot of the right spots

Not really my style but I appreciate the music

the mama's and the papa's will always have a special place in my heart. the harmonies are so gorg <3

Forgot what a good song California Dreaming is

very, very smooth

Not too bad

Two heavy hitters carry this album in Monday Morning and California Dreaming. And that might just be enough.

Classic harmonies of San Francisco 60's folk rock. California Dreamin' has been truly anthemic for 60 years.

This style of music usually doesn’t do much for me, but I enjoyed most of this album. There’s no denying “California Dreamin’” is the highlight, but tracks like “Monday, Monday,” “Straight Shooter,” “Go Where You Wanna Go,” and “Somebody Groovy” all hold up really well. It also helps that the album doesn’t overstay its welcome, clocking in at just over 30 minutes.

Like the Beatles if they had mixed gender vocals. I really liked Got a Feelin’.

Was a nice album to listen too. Especially liked Monday Monday and love California Dreaming

Good sixties pop/folk LP. Big harmonies and well crafted if a bit dated sound.

This is prime LA music studio rock with a crazy cast of characters playing on it. I love Monday Monday. It’s one of the first songs I can remember wanting to hear again when I was a little kid I think because my parents record collection was all sort of early 60s pop it really infected my brain and that’s the that’s the type of music that I can relate to the most

Weird funky little album.

All bangers! No skips.

Embodies the spirit of 60s music.

Very interesting album. A lot of diverse vibes in each tune. A bit of simon & garfunkel, a bit beatles. Nice basslines (Somebody groovy). California dreamin is just too good, classic. Highlight(s): Straight Shooter.

It’s crazy to think this band was only on the scene for four years. Despite their tumultuous history, they wrote some great songs.

The Mamas & The Papas are one of a kind. They perfected these harmonizing songs and their music holds up so well from the 60s.

Beautiful album.

What a great little album

It's a solid album. But I've seen Chungking Express, so I've already hit my lifetime quote for California Dreamin'

The original stuff is good. The covers are very ho hum.

As lush and competent as a Beatles or Beach Boys recording. Just not quite as sophisticated. Don't let that turn you off The Mamas & The Papas, though. Mama Cass (don't call her Big Mama) is one of the best vocalists of the era. All the same, while the band remains as lush-sounding as ever (they sound like a full choir), it's still a 3.5 for blending into the 60's scene. Better than The Sonics, not as good as The Stones, not as earth-shattering as Blue Cheer. We'll round up to a 4/5 because Mama Cass never got the respect she deserves.

i have a cold right now. so i’m kinda floating through the world. and i decided to take a walk in the woods and listen to this. and it was definitely one of the best listening environments for it. these guys are pretty damn cool. also if time travel existed i think michelle phillips would have made a good pair

Ah, another one from the childhood. Certain seminal tracks, some forgettable ones.

i have an immense nostalgia for the mamas and the papas, growing up listening to oldies radio in the back seat of my parents' car. the number one thing for me about them is their harmonies, which are top notch. i mean just michelle and cass harmonizing is incredible. of course, cass is an incredible vocalist in her own right, but michelle is underrated. the album here is a great showcase of their prowess. it's a little rough around the edges. the biggest fault here for me is that the track listing, particularly on side 2, is pretty meh. a lot of phoned in, contemporary covers, which is sort of par for the course for most artists' albums in this era. of course, 'monday, monday' and 'california dreamin' are great, and i also love 'straight shooter' and their cover of the beatles' 'i call your name.' but i could go without a lot of the lesser covers on here. that being said, i still like this one!

I enjoyed this far more than I expected. I've never been into this group; you could've called me a certified hater. But this album made me believe. They still have a few songs (not on this disc) that I think are shit and (apparently) John Phillips is a trash ass human, but the man can arrange some vocals. That's the strength of these tracks, both the originals and the covers (this was a time when groups covered their contemporaries, like the Lennon - McCartney or the Leiber and Stoller that appear here) benefit from John Phillips's arrangements as well as The Wrecking Crew usual brilliant performance. My one beef is the mix. The various instruments and vocals exclusively in the left or right channel is jarring to my ears. I suppose that was the audio aesthetic of the era.

Jättebra men också lite så är den inte slut snart

Really like this album, the vocals are amazing and a fun classic vibe as well Fav songs - Monday, Monday , Do You Wanna Dance, California Dreamin 4/5

Distinct part-harmony sound, great on speakers in a room Drags on a bit

Fire album. I wasn't expecting much from this one, but the sound was just really fun and it was a joy to listen to.

Amazing vocals! The album is dripping with hippie goo, but it is clear why this was such a great launch pad for the M&Ps.

Brilliant

I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would.

I expected this to be way more religious based, I think? California dreaming is a great song. Great vibes through the entire album.

favorite song from the album: California Dreamin'

Nice and chill, a couple classics in there too!

I recognized a couple songs I knew off this album, which I would have never known it was this group if I hadn’t gotten this pick. Overall it was a fun experience.

Excellent harmonies and a pretty decent album too.

My ears were surprised by their range.

I enjoyed this way more than expected. There is a certain innocence - some might say cringe - long since lost. I kind of wish I had grown up in the 60s. California Dreamin is a top 30 song for me. I favorited 4 songs. 4/5

très très sympa j’aime bcp les harmonies de voix en général alors là je suis servie

I'm such a hippie!

stereo audio almost dragged this to a 3

Yeah, go on. It’s quite pleasant

Now I hope some Mama Cass solo stuff is on this list.

Honestly a great Album for the time with a true highlight of California dreaming. That being said this album does have some more dated songs that keeps it from being a 5 for me

Not sure if this was just because I had just listened to the hives or because I was in a rotten mood from a miserable night of driving uber eats through a torrential rainstorm, but this was a godsend. So light and joyful, and the harmonies and songwriting are mwah. When the worst song on an album is California Dreamin’ (no nuance take btw) you know you have a good album. Gonna say 4.5 but maybe will regret it in the future.

I vibe with this. Lovely harmonies, some really great tunes. An all time classic.

Really enjoyed - nice chilled album

sunny, ethereal pop album. embodies LA kind of sound really well - 7.5/10

I enjoyed the harmony and the flow of the album

Wonderful harmonies

These songs always remind me of driving through town on weekend mornings with my ex-girlfriends family, K-Earth 101 playing through the old stereo in her step-dads car, this was around 2003, good times.

Defining 60s songs...gorgeous harmonies, classic songs...just over 30 mins long...what's not to like! 4/5

Great album. Couple of iconic songs, couple of remakes, couple songs that I had never heard, but were amazing especially the final track “the in crowd”

I really love some of these songs..mainly the ones that were written by Phillips and other band members. The only cover song that I cared for was “I call your name” which might be my favorite song from this band; I think the arrangement is awesome, and much prefer it to the Beatles version. I just love their harmonies, and to me they are fairly unique. If this album did not include the other cover selections, I would give it five stars, even in spite of the fact that John Phillips was such an incestuous creep. But the additional cover songs drag it down to four stars.

These guys can sing, that's for sure. The Mamas/Papas are a group that are of their time. One can put on California Dreamin' and instantly get a feeling for the time period. The fabulous mid-60s; the year 1966. The year before the psychedelic rush hit the world. This record is stuck in that transitionary period where the early 60s turned into the late 60s. The voices of the Mamas and Papas come together in great unison. Monday, Monday, Straight Shooter, Got A Feelin' and I Call Your Name (a Lennon/McCartney song?) are all great. But at a certain point, the record hits some insignificant points that bring down by rating by a smidge. Still, for the joy and talent that I hear within the music, I do believe what I see and hear (7/10, 4/5 on this scale)

California Dreaming, while a fan fave, makes me wanna do shrooms and run through a field while the warm sun shines down. 78 degrees, no humidity type best. I enjoyed!

For a band where the main instrument is their voices this is pretty great

Honestamente no tenía ni idea de que este grupo existía y es glorioso

One of the most 60s albums ever. Everything from the melodies, to the arrangements, to the production, to the lyrics are all firmly planted in 1966. Some don’t like that, but I definitely do. The vocal harmonies are all amazing and the arrangements are great. The songwriting is very strong, even if it is very much of its time. 4/5

Un classique qui n’usurpe pas sa réputation!

Naj poznatija pesma na albumu je "California dreamin" i bez sumnje ja naj bolja pesma, ostale nisu ni slicne ali nisu lose.

Day 30 Some absolutely gorgeous harmonies, really smooth. One I’ll definitely revisit on summer walks. 8/10 Highlights Straight Shooter California Dreamin’

Wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did considering there are very few non-rock albums from this time that I enjoy.

Classic sunshine pop album. Beautiful harmonies that belie their counter cultural lyrical message.

Delightful - a very different sixties than Revolver, but passionate and charming and tight without being mannered.

so funny to read that the record was pulled from stores because the toilet on the cover was judged indecent. It's a nice album to listen to! California Dreamin' is such a banger

Wow the Mamas and Papas sound like a wholesome bunch! Don’t read into them if you’d like to keep that opinion and just enjoy the music for what it is.

Mommy and daddy… I like!!!!!

Beautiful

A collection of very enjoyable pop songs. Monday Monday especially stands out. And that’s mostly Papa!

8.30, työmatka koss, qobuz eipä tästäkään oikeen mitään sanottavaa ennen kuuntelua, kiva että on mammoja pappojen lisäks. mut jos noin monta menee ammeeseen samaa aikaa ni ei sinne kyllä vettä mahu —kuuntelu o ou stereo on uusi teknologia. stemmoja jeeee ja _oikeita_ instrumentteja

Good, and I love the cover album

This is lovely pop music. I have no problems having this playing in the background while doing almost anything. It's not the kind of music I would actively listen to tho.

Kinda of interesting to think this would be pop music back in the day. And its very boomer of me but for this to be like lame pop back then is crazy cuz this is kinda awesome? Like its corny as fuck sure but they sound really good and the chord changes in dome of these are really fun

Solid pop album. They really tried to mix up the harmonies to keep it interesting, but couldn't always do it. Still, one of the great accomplishments of the 60s. 4/5

Enjoyed this one a lot. I love their use of vocal harmonies. Plus the hits are amazing

Lovely listen. Beautiful voices and really nice songs. 4/4.5

I enjoyed this listen.

The harmonies are unreal. Great psychedelic tinged folk rock. Standouts beside the hits are "Somebody Groovy" and "You Baby"

Solid, couple standouts, enjoyed the left and right channel focuses.

Very calm, low energy. Very nostalgic sounding.

Did not realize this is who California dreaming is by. Very solid album. Great 60's pop feel.

Iconic songs

Mama Cass was the real deal, John Phillips gives me the ick.

It’s a beautiful record - I was surprised how much I enjoyed. But it’s also very much boomer jams.

4.5/5 really slept on some of the other songs in this album. straight shooter is top

Such a good debut album.

7.5/10 good/strong classics, less convinced by the rest.

monday, monday - dobar pocetak, bas jako 60te, real straight shooter - cooking vajb, svida mi se (dodano u proljeće) got a feelin' - drugacije od ocekivanog, sporija od prethodnih, dobri lyrics, dosta relatable, da sam heartbroken tinejdzerka u 60ima plakala bih na ovo i call your name - zvuci kao intro nekog filma iz 80ih, fora ali nis spec do you wanna dance - fun, dobro bi zvucalo na gramofonu (al to vrijedi i za sve ostale) go where you wanna go - svidaju mi se stihovi, so real, do what you wanna do!! california dreamin' - KLASIK, obozavam onaj "got down on MY KNEES" dio spanish harlem - mirna pjesme, ne svida mi se bas, precrkveni vajb somebody groovy - fora, funky hey girl - dobri stihovi, inspirational, svida mi se kontrast stihova glavnog vokala i backup pjevacice, malo cudno da ju tjesi i govori da ce ju cekat... you baby - super instrumental, stihovi okej the in crowd - jako dobar glas, fora instrumental overall - super vibe, kuzim zasto je popularan album, bas za slusanje na gramofonu u ogromnom bijelom stanu s pogledom na ulicu i puno biljaka i knjiga, da bar mogu davat po pola zvjezdica

Monday, Monday...pure vocal bliss. Covering Spanish Harlem is kind of an eye roll. They should have featured Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips to make a distinct cover. A lot of repetitive semi-"doo wop" songs. It's hard to overstate how powerful and yet the same time sweet and welcoming voice of Mama Cass.

Never listened to one of their albums in full before, but obviously knew a few of the tracks. You can't really go wrong with California Dreamin', and the rest is good too. Fav tracks: California Dreamin'; Monday, Monday; Straight Shooter

The Mama's and the Papa's deliver a timeless classic where vocal harmony shines front and center in this classic folk rock record, with multiple standout tracks. While the album lacks any particular standout or redefining feature it is an incredibly strong and consistent record

If you like the more personal stuff from Brian Wilson and the Beatles you'll probably like this.

Great album. Starts strong, but new string, and delights all the way through. -4/5

easy listen, so very well known songs

The old time feel to it felt nice. California Dreamin' is above the rest, but fun overall.

All the hits, all the harmonies.

liked this

very enjoyable. harmonies stood out

This was lovely. I love this style of 60s music, it’s just so nice to listen to. California Dreamin’ is such a great song and is up there in my top 25 I’d say. Overall, a really solid album!

Gorgeous harmonies, terrible people

A nice album with of course the fantastic hits. I like several other songs but please no covers. A mix of greatness and some outdated stuff. 4.5 stars rounded to 4.

Monday Monday…

That stereo mix dates this so much. Really good song writing though.

Classic album I did not know that I needed

Pretty great

Really quite lovely

This album ranks as my second favourite album of the members sitting in a bath on the cover. 'Monday, Monday's sets the tone for the album well. Great harmonies, a nice orchestral section. I watched a documentary on the this sound (I think it was called 'The Valley Sound', but I'll only quote this in brackets because I'm not that confident! There's a nice blend of vocals and the songwriting is fairly catchy. I did enjoy it, however there is fair bit of dates lyrics which didn't sit well with me. I enjoyed the inclusion of my favourite underrated Lennon/McCartney track. However, I felt like it was music I would enjoy by myself but not with company. I mean, I wouldn't openly let people know I was listening to it... It's cool, but not THAT cool. 4 stars.

brought back memories. good album for that time frame.

Good tunes mostly.

Shockingly enjoyed the whole thing thoroughly. Great music and harmonies throughout.

Classic

В древние времена рингтонов на телефонах, самая известная песня группы стояла у меня на звонке, и даже после этого я все равно очень люблю ее. Лучшая песня - California Dreamin’.

That 60s fascination with stereo separation. Album suffers from the recording capabilities of the time. Shouty vocals, bad reverbs that lead to unpleasant buildup on certain vocal parts, excessive stereo separation, a master entirely devoid of low end. Not going to listen to this in mono, but I bet that stereo field is covering for an otherwise completely undecipherable mid range. Engineering issues aside, a good album musically. Great harmonies, good musicians, varied musical structures, some obvious hits. 4*.

Mamas and Papas is always good. Fun early disco type stuff, I'd listen to this a few times a year.

I lot of ear worms on this one by way of the Monkees, Beach Boys, and the Beatles. The sound is fun, the lyrics are easy-going even at its most emotional. Will this stick with me? Not as much as their contemporaries. Do they still feel important? Of course. Definitely a good record to get into the zeitgeist of pop around this era.

Solid, solid, solid.

High quality, but it also shows how much better Beatles were at the small things. It’s close to three but

The harmonies are amazing.

This is like being put in a time machine and transported right to the 60s once Monday, Monday comes on. Such a good song. Fitting we get this on a hot summer day because all I can picture is the beach and sunny skies when listening along. California Dreamin' is a classic. I wonder how often it's been used in movies or TV shows. Other than the 2 songs I listed, none other stand out. Still a good listen overall. I land at around 3.5 stars for this, but will round up to a low 4.

Never heard of this album or band, but have certainly heard a couple of the songs on here. Spanish Harlem caught my ear. Short and sweet album. Low side of 4, but it was nice and pleasant.

I needed this after that last Pere Ubu album. Very chill sunshine pop that is some classic 60's folky pop rock. Monday, Monday and California Dreamin' are incredible. California Dreamin' specifically is one of the greatest songs of all time. Really loving Mama Cass's vocals on The "in" Crowd. Really enjoyable rekkid.

Ok, separate the art from the artist.

The group that invented harmonizing. Man, if they weren't too busy screwing each other and over they could've been bigger. Cass Elliot got the short end of the stick with this group and it's a shame she didn't get to enjoy her stint in the spotlight longer. 4/5

California Dreamin' is iconic. Nothing was too much of a bop but I enjoyed the easy listening.

Great!

California Dreaming is one of the best songs ever created. It is definitely the best song on this album.

Really beautiful harmonies and vocals. I'm not usually a fan of lots of gang vocals, but here they work well and weave through each other in really interesting ways. The sound is cozy, comforting, and warm. Not my usual type of music but a really nice listen.

This was fun to listen to in the setting I did, the conservatory at Carrick. I think it would make great music for a movie sound track and to me that’s a huge compliment. I recognised some of it I think which is probs why it was on this list. Mostly just fun is how I’d describe it. Go where you wanna go and Spanish Harlem were the highlights for me.

Consistently strong throughout but none of the songs necessarily blow me away (even California Dreamin), just a simple selection of great tunes

Obviously already familiar with the band and some of the songs on here. There were a few with a more country feel which was interesting.

Haven't listened to the mamas & the papas much before. Only experience of their music I've had before has been singing California Dreamin with my friends. That song I love. Thought they were a one hit wonder band. They're not. Sounds like you would think bands from the 60s would sound like, and that's probably because they're one of the bands pioneering and being the best in that genre. At least that's what I think having listened to this album.

Positives: Very upbeat and bubbly, charming, catchy but not repetitive Negatives: Not many stand out songs 7 out of 1

I could barely believe my eyes and ears. My eyes were flummoxed by the sight of two mamas and two papas in a bathtub. My ears were delighted to hear these tunes.

Classic 1960s summertime album, so many hits

Monday, Monday: Absolute banger, love the sound and the background vocals Straight Shooter: Decent, like the chorus Got a Feelin': Nice and mellow, very soft sounding I Call Your Name: Not a fan, drums are way too pronounced and old Do You Wanna Dance: Too slow and sounds too old Go Where You Wanna Go: I don't wanna go where I wanna go California Dreamin: Saving grace to the rest of the album Spanish Harlem: Like the lalalas, oh yeah, this is a banger Somebody Groovy: Not bad, feels very similar to the rest Hey Girl: Mid at best You Baby: Not rememberable The 'In' Crowd: Ehhhh Best Song: Monday, Monday Worst Song: Do You Wanna Dance Favorite New Song: Spanish Harlem

Giving this an extra star for such a good use of stereo sound. Songs: Monday Monday, California Dreamin, The In Crowd

Monday Monday Straight shooter California dreamin

Bright, shiney melodies. Beautiful harmonies. Amazing songwriting.

нормалек.

Really fun sound and some phenomenal songs. However, definitely felt like some of the songs were just fillers.

Surprisingly interesting given the 60s sterotypes I associated with this band

Ahhhhh brings me back to university. My ex-girlfriend loved this album. California Dreamin is a classic, especially

They said "let's make an album with lots and lots of barbershop quartet vibes. Make it pop " and the world was changed

Original songs were basic, but catchy

Good album. Classic California Dreaming is on it.

Not bad for old classic music. Good groove

Great folky sounds. Probably too depressed to really take it in properly

Excellent album!

Good album.

Such an iconic album honestly. Highlights: Got a Feelin', California Dreaming, Straight Shooter

Enjoyed more than I expected. Made the housework quite fun. Favourites: Straight shooter, California Dreamin’, Spanish Harlem

Great album, an absolute classic! Fav songs: straight shooter, California dreaming, the in crowd

Ja chill

Ну вроде неплохо. California dreaming -- легенда. Straight shooter хорошо. Остальное ок.

Borderline kitschy at times but California dreaming saves it from mediocrity. Beach boys and Beatles vibes. 3.6

Good songs, not my normal type of music I like but I did enjoy it

This album is a lot and the band turned out to be a lot too (really John more than anyone), but the run time means they end right before it starts to grate and holy shit are those vocals right. Monday Monday and California Dreamin' are the real winners but the whole album is great. Glad I listened.

4.25-4.5

California Dreamin is an S+ tier song. The rest range from average to great.

So I discovered The Mamas & The Papas, like many people my age did, through the Jackass tv show. That was the first time I heard California Dreamin, which is definitely their best song. So when I listened to this album I was excited cause I knew that song was on this album. And I had two takeaways, the first being the album isn’t really as heavy I thought it would be. The second thing I realized is that this album not really being a heavy psychedelic rock is totally fine cause they are so talented and gifted singers that they can compensate for how formulaic the music is. The album as a whole had some skips but they were perfectly spaced throughout the album to not lose my interest. After every song I didn’t care for there was usually another song I did like either immediately after or after one other song. So the pacing of the album is on point for someone like me who was expecting more of something else. The only other negative thing I have to say is that the “Mamas” are more gifted singers than the “Papas” but that only hurts like 2-3 songs where the boys take the lead. Honestly if you don’t like harmonic singing or late 60s music you are gunna struggle with this album, but you won’t struggle with “California Dreaming” cause that song is untouchably good.

Classic California sound of the sixties. Strong harmonies and production with several really strong songs.

Beautiful harmonies. Some songs were a little too old timey for me, but great album overall

Todo o otimismo dos anos 60 está aqui, é uma delícia

The harmonies on this album are just something out of this world. Just a little bit bored by the orchestration. 7,25/10 fav songs : California Dreamin' & Spanish Harlem

Have always liked melodic sound. Liked most of the songs that I hadn't heard before.

What is it with these 1960s albums and their weird headphones mixes?! They have some absolute tunes though: Monday, Monday, California Dreamin'... basically sounds like the Beatles.

Lots of memories getting stoned to do this in high school.

Ikkje høyrt før, utanom nokre hits, får lyst til å høyre meir på.

easy listening

Redelijk sterke popliedjes, net geen vijf sterren waard. "California Dreamin'" en "Monday, Monday" zijn natuurlijk wel onvergetelijk.

Knockout. I have to sing along. The Beach Boys mastered harmony but the M&Ps made it soar like a finely tuned choir. And there were so many more hits to come. BRB, gotta listen (and sing) again.

Mmmm, it's pleasant, California Dreaming is a classic, yet I kinda wish the whole project had a bit more of a structure.

Beautiful harmonies and voices from a close-knit group. It's nice to remember people used to carry a tune without using software or going hog wild with melisma. The mix is very odd for being in the early days of stereo (all the drums on one side, all the singers on the other, for example). The songs are well-crafted and executed.

There are Harmonies, and there are Mama's and Papa's Harmonies. Luscious. The two big bits are there, and they obviously grab the attention, but the oh tracks are darned good too.

Pretty good album, LOVED a couple songs low 4

Born to be a drifting 60s hippie, forced to log in to Brightspace

Easy listening

It's a little dated but I listen to this band all the time because the songs are extremely catchy, the harmonies are cool, and it's usually a crowd pleaser.

California Dreamin' is the ultimate banger. The whole album is just a vibe. Monday, Monday so relatable and Got a Feelin' is really unique and beautiful. Straight shooter is just like Beatles.

This was a nice listen, kind of like the Beach Boys before they became more interesting, but with more mature subject matters and women singing as well. The vocal harmonies are the heart of all this and they are flawless. It's performed really well without being overcomplicated or overly technical. The song are written to be pop songs, and they succeed as such. I don't really have much to say about it. It's nice, easy to listen to, and not pretentious. It's not particularly interesting or challenging, but it doesn't have to be.

Quite a debut with two iconic tracks that have more than stood the test of time and were part of the foundation of the hippie generation. The rest of the album is decent.

Wife swapping and dysfunction. All the proper recipes of the hippie generation to make a great record. The songs and harmonies on this speak for themselves. They are timeless and helped defined a new generation. But it’s hard to overlook the incestuous relationship John Phillips had with his daughter. And while that had yet to occur at the time of this album, he was one sick and twisted man.

Take me to the canyon. Straight up time capsule record here. Great songs, great vocals.

You know the hits. Overall a solid listen with nice harmonies and layers. Sounds dated but still holds up (if that makes sense). I’m torn between a 3 and 4 but ultimately will round up because 60s Michelle Phillips is fuego 🔥

Two certified classics, but I think Straight Shooter is my favorite song on this album. It's a bop. I dug this very much indeed. 3.75.5

What a collection of voices and harmonies. Stone cold classic.

So many classics in one album

Nice harmonies. The "In" crowd organ part is great.

Some unknown songs, some known songs, but all of them good. Some dancing was involved ;)

It's interesting to see what the obvious classic "California Dreamin'" is surrounded with on this album to make it a whole. It is corny, almost too "in-love", but just gives me as a listener good feelings about the future, even though this one is "way" from the past.

My dad used to play this all the time, so it's well known. It's solid throughout, with some standout big hits. Overall there's some good melodies, good harmonies, and really nice backing instrumentation. 3.5 rounded up.

Good record all around, I don’t have too much to add other than California Dreamin is a great song, and I don’t really have any songs I would skip. Favorite Tracks: California Dreaming, Spanish Harlem, and Monday Monday (truly accurate)

Not quite as much of Cass's joyful voice to the fore as I would like, but I do really love several of these tracks, including of course the brilliant California Dreaming. I also love Monday Monday which has some of my fave harmonies EVER. I've taken a star off because a couple of tracks were a bit unmemorable, and I prefer more "unbridled" Cass such as on The In Crowd and, of course, her own solo stuff (everyone should listen to Make Your Own Kind of Music at least once a month). Highly enjoyable album, though.

Great album. Terrible cover.

Absolutely love the song California Dreamin'. An overall very good album with some great songs by The Mamas & The Papas.

"Monday, Monday", Straight Shooter, Go where you wanna Go, California Dreamin' and Somebody Groovy are great songs. Do you wanna dance, Spanish Harlem, Hey Girl are good. Got a Feelin', I Call your Name You Baby and The In Crowd are ok. Overall it's a great album, nothing is bad and it has 5 great songs.

They were all fucking? Right? They had to be. Anyways, California Dreaming is one of the best songs of all time and there are alot of other good ones on here too Best Song: California Dreaming Rating: 7.5/10 (Solid) Stars: 4/5

I've heard this album plenty of times in the past. I don't know if it's the repeat listens, or what, but I just can't give it a 5. There are a lot of great tracks on here, but as a full album it felt like it was lacking something, and a few tracks fade away from my interest so quickly. 4.5/5

Classic!

Great classic sounds, interesting musically as well

Classic 60's pop with a handful of must knows.

Loved it and the vibe. Great album for the weekend.

Easy listening and good times

Sublime.

I enjoyed the album, as I do with most rock from this era. I only knew California Dreaming beforehand. My main gripe with the song is the mix, as it felt like the band was split down the middle in my headphones, which gave me a headache at times.

Good but old has a time and a place but I can’t see myself going back and listening to it

Classic 60s sounds/album. Enjoyed listening to it!

mér finnst þetta snilld. allt sem ég vil. samsöngur og nördaskapur. set 4,5 af því að lögin eru frekar misgóð.

Stratospheric highs, obviously, but enough weaker tracks to drag the album down a point or two.

A great classic 60s sound. It's warm, soft, catchy, and has some glowing harmonies. The whole record is a fun listen, but the first half really stands out. Monday Monday, Straight Shooter, Got A Feelin', two excellent covers, then Go Where You Wanna Go. And the party continues with the group's most well-known track, California Dreamin'. And gosh darnit, that song is highly regarded for a reason. It showcases the best harmonies the 60s decade (and possibly all of musical history) has to offer. I don't see how anyone with half a temporal lobe could dislike this kind of music. There's nothing offensive, nothing grating... just pure, sweet, simple musical talent. I noticed a few jazz (or jazz-adjacent) chords in the vocal arrangement, which seems pretty darn progressive for its time. Kind of like Dylan's turn toward a more electric sound in 1965. As another reviewer wrote about the harmonies, "the forward-looking eclecticism of this record is part of its genius." Really, the only things I can fault about the album are (a) that its tail end is a bit lacklustre, and (b) hopping on the "counterculture bandwagon" is actually much less impressive than its sounds. These guys/gals were not part of the vanguard, even if they spearheaded a very specific subdivision of it. You can kind of feel them clinging to the pop meta even despite their harmonic experimentation. On a different note: we have another record where the top-rated review gives a lower rating on account of the band members being horrible people. I'd like to mention that removing every "morally bad" artist on this list would probably leave less than 100 albums. (In other words: it's not a good criterion to judge music by.) 4/5 Key tracks: Straight Shooter, I Call Your Name, California Dreamin'

In spite of sounding a lot like The Beatles, this record is filled with catchy hooks and melodies, specially the ones coming from the female singers. I only wish I didn't search about John...

When it comes to harmonic/folk pop groups of the 60's, you probably think of the Mamas & The Papas. Almost everything sounds recognizable here, even if one hasn't heard much of their discography. Very groovy, thanks in part to the production crew harnessing the talents of each vocalist. Everything sounds like sunshine and roses, despite what the songwriting is displaying to the listener. Regarding the album cover, stuffing the group in a bathtub for a photo was certainly an artistic choice. Apparently the cover went through a few reprints, firstly due to the inclusion of a toilet being deemed "indecent" (different times...)

Lacks the oomph to be a real mega-hit but I do like this kind of thing

They have such a unique style. I wish we had more acts nowadays like them. 7/10

Really enjoyed this very much. It's all of a keeping with California Dreaming, which is obviously lovely, and they're at their full power when they do the millions of harmonies thing. It's a tiny bit trite in places maybe, but it's a very enjoyable thing to let wash over you.

Plenty familiar with the radio-hits from listening to the Oldies station growing up, but never listened to a full album of theirs. It's good! Just a nice American folk album with great harmonies. I'm also pleasantly surprised that I'm just learning that the strings sample in Jens Lekman's "Maple Leaves" is from "Do You Wanna Dance" Always thought it would have come from a more obscure song from the era.

Being forced to listen to the most famous song about Mondays ON a Monday was both awesome and horrifically cruel

Solid album, really enjoyed listening to this one. I'll go 4 on this one - some big hits, but it was all enjoyable.

Some nice songs on here. I like California Dreamin’

Good stuff

Decent stuff, of course a few of their best songs are on here.

Lovely album. Definitive of the Laurel Canyon sound. What’s not to love?

Cute! Didnt know they sang so many classics

I know Monday Monday and expected I’d enjoy the opening track and it would be all down hill from there. I was wrong. The next track was awesome and the rest of the album varies from decent to excellent. A surprise enjoyment

Looooove

Nostalgic!

I liked having this on in the background! Super tranquil and not like the sad stuff we’ve been getting. I kinda liked this as a palette cleanser.

Ha! Perfect opening for a Monday morning. Thanks 1001! I think the opening song set the mood - really tipped me off on the right foot for the start to the week. Warm harmonies, effortless melodies. Short, sweet songs. Feels like a soft breeze through a ‘60s dream, and I was born in the 80's! It’s folky - sunny, but not naive. The balance of voices is striking, like if The Beach Boys went folk with a touch of jazz. Of course it's a carbon copy of the Beach Boys formula, they were successful! Playlist Additions: - Monday, Monday - I Call Your Name - Go Where You Wanna Go - California Dreamin' - Somebody Groovy

This album gets top marks simply for the song California Dreamin'. Solid 60's hippie pop. Favourite songs: California Dreamin', Straight Shooter, Somebody Groovy, Do You Wanna Dance, Go Where You Wanna Go, Spanish Harlem Least favourite songs: Got a Feelin' 4/5

Typical 60's feel-good music, in a very positive way. Very nice harmonies and several all-time classics.

So nostalgischer Klang und viel Chor, klingt so gut
