Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Echoing the Bond theme similarities. Not too bad, right in the middle. Drags in the 2nd half.
Like trip hop scott walker. Bar a couple of tracks, this was good.
Both interesting and really boring at the same time.
Alison has a great voice, and there are some great tunes. But the rest of the album is all a bit ‘Portishead at home’.
This leverages the sounds of late 60's bachelor pad kitsch kind of like Broadcast and mixing it with that Portishead-ish Twin Peaks 'Audreys Theme' style. It kind of distills into it's own late 90's genre. There's probably bands still trying to do it but I haven't heard it. It has a time and place, this is okay. Not sure if it's a must-hear.
I remember the first time this band arrived. It never really appealed to me. I'm never the biggest fan of baroque pop to begin with, but whenever they were played on TV or radio, they just drifted over me. How times have changed! I have to admit that the Shirley Basseyness of it all is still there but it doesn't seem as grating as it did at the time. There are more obvious Portishead influences (and that's always a good thing). It's atmospheric and sound track like in the best possible way. Best Tracks: Lovely Head; Paper Bag; Utopia
I kept on being reminded of Roxy Music which is a good thing.
This album sounds like the intro to every 90's James Bond movie, no?
This was quite the interesting listen. Not exactly my speed, but I enjoyed this. I won’t be revisiting though.
“Overall this album sounds like John Williams scoring a Bond theme while sleepwalking.” That’s from another review, and I think it’s apt, at least for the first half of the album. This was an extremely weird listen. Boring in places, intriguing in others. I don’t expect I’ll ever listen to it again, but I’m glad I listened to it at least once. 5/10 Decent
좋은대 졸려
It was enjoyable to discover who Goldfrapp is through this project, and I found this and Seventh Tree to be solid listens. I still don’t understand how they have two albums on this list and a band like Weezer has zero, but I think it’s a result of British band bias.
Sounds like James Bond songs.
Felt Mountain feels like the opening credits to a James Bond film, sleek, icy, cinematic, and wrapped in an air of retro-futurist glamour. That comparison isn’t a criticism in itself; in fact, it’s one of the album’s strongest initial hooks. The lush strings, whispery vocals, and shadowy electronic arrangements create an immediately seductive atmosphere. The problem is consistency to a fault. Nearly every track leans into the same spy-noir aesthetic, and while the mood is impeccably crafted, it rarely evolves. What begins as elegant and mysterious gradually becomes predictable. The album prioritizes texture and ambience over dynamic songwriting, which can leave the listener admiring the surface rather than feeling deeply engaged. Alison Goldfrapp’s voice is undeniably striking, cool, controlled, and otherworldly, but it’s often used more as another instrument than as a narrative force. Tracks blur together, reinforcing the album’s cohesion but also limiting its emotional range. There are moments of beauty and sophistication throughout, yet few surprises. In the end, Felt Mountain is stylish and confident, but a bit too comfortable in its own aesthetic. It’s an album that knows exactly what it wants to be, and refuses to be anything else. 6/10
Felt Mountain is an album that has quite a lot of interesting quirks. This album feels like a combination of various other electronica albums on this list those being Gotan Project's La Revancha Del Tango, Tangerine Dream's Phaedra and even a bit of Portishead's Dummy. This album mainly goes for a trip hop sound with some ambient soundscapes and a slight dab of some tango music. I really do quite like a lot of the things it tries to do as it gives the album quite a lot of character. Granted, there are points in this album where the songs just kinda meander along and don't really do anything that interesting which is why i can't give this album 4 stars but all in all, i did enjoy what this album did. Best Song: Human Worst Song: Deer Stop
The three-est of threes. Pretty unique, but that was about it.
This entire album sounded like it would play during the introduction of the villain in every James Bond movie. Oompah Radar was an incredibly random song that made me feel like I was at a 1920s circus. Was a unique but also kind of boring album. Lower 3
I liked it!!
Enjoyed parts of this. Some songs sounded like they could be a Bond song.
not the album I expected. Heavy shirley bassey Bond vibes , but in a good way. Warrants more listens
Some cool stuff here (old synths) and a good voice. Feels like film music though.
Another group I had never heard about. I liked the album and it was something a little different.
Too ambient. Too repetitive. Just OK.
Got that early 2000s electronica shine.
This was strange and cool at the same time. Not sure how to describe it.
FAVO: Horse Tears
Spooky album indeed
Closer to a 3.5
Unique sound and a band I'm glad to have heard and will probably check out more of. I can see why folks have compared them to Massive Attack.
Like a weirdo surrealist Bond soundtrack
Sounded in part like a bond soundtrack, for one spent along French Riviera. But without a main bond song. A high 3/low 4 for me.
I like trip hop to be trip hop. Too much oom pah, classical and cabaret in this. Low 3/5
Felt Mountain has a couple of really strong songs - Utopia and Lovely Head. Overall a nice sound.
Goldfrapp was one of few bands of this era who sounded like they were auditioning to write a Bond theme - it's not a bad wave to be on! There’s a glamorous, slowly unfolding dramatic energy to this album, clearly inspired by 1960s movie soundtracks. A nice integration of strings, plenty of synths and curious, playful vocals at the centre of it all. I love how patient it is, never in a hurry. It's all robust and well conceived, even if it never develops into something I’m totally lost in.
theremin-y good loved every thereminute because theremin lies the truth I tried showing it to my girlfriend, but I couldn't get theremin-to it spent most of the time coming up with these puns cos I was honestly kinda bored. like give us a BEAT, Alison. I don't get Dimery's obsession with debut albums, like just pick the artist's best work, it's not difficult. There's already plenty of great trip hop acts in this list, Goldfrapp are better known for the vibrant, synthy indie-pop stuff they do later on in the 00s. 6 / 10 Best track/s: Human Head, Utopia Better albums by Goldfrapp: Black Cherry, Supernature
🎶 "if you're fond of whistling, and theremins..." 🎶 Atmospheric and interesting, if not exactly essential
Interesting group and a decent sounding album. I enjoyed the production and might listen to similar music from the era in the future.
Boh lei non mi dice niente, anche l’altro album. La metterei solo se fossi in jn ristorante con luci calde e soffuse
Interesting
It sounded like something out of James Bond movies
It wasn't bad, pretty well produced. But it didn't connect well with me.
Not so sure I felt anything about Felt Mountain.
Can totally see this as film music or in the background in a bar but I wouldn’t listen to it during the day
Good
3. Was cool to listen to human, which was sampled by KW on freestyle.1, What the fuck right now and freestyle 4
A hard one to rate. There's some truly beautiful and occasionally eerie stuff here. But its hard not to consider it somewhat repetitive across its 39 minutes, nor derivative of Portishead.
I mean, it was pretty beautiful at sections. I can dig a ethereal sounding song every so often, and I realize those also they probably get made on an album like this. All in all, this album wasn’t terrible. It’s really beautiful at certain sections, but it’s a lot for me personally clocking in at 40 mins. It needs to strike a very certain mood, and that’s going to be quite rare. I’ll punch it up to a 3, because that’s art
I thought this was going to be a dance record. This cinematic thing has been done before so I am not sure what this album represents that makes it something I must hear.
Kind of like 60 spy music…
88/1001 First listen. I like this immediately. Sparse. Strange vibes. Sounds old and new at the same time but that’s trip-hop I suppose. I look forward to hearing more. 5/10
I like Goldfrapp, but two albums on this list (to date) seems misguided. She can do a lot of different things and this album is distinct from the other one that was recently featured on this list. But I found that this fell a little flat by comparison. And still not my favorite Goldfrapp album - so who knows. Maybe it’s 1001 Goldfrapp albums you need to know.
Moody and atmospheric. Human is the stand out track for me.
Oddly enough, I enjoyed it more on my first listen and less on my second. It's the sort of thing I should like - trip hop with dreamy/mysterious female vocals. I think they do that part ok. It's like a slightly worse Portishead in that regard, but it's still pretty good. I am far from a fan of the cabaret influences. They kinda ruin the vibe for me. Flipping between chilled and theatrical wasn't a great mix. It's unique though, and I'm glad it's on the list. I'll have to listen to the other albums too.
I really wanted to like this more than I did. This dreamy atmosphere in tracks like Lovely Head, Human, and Utopia worked phenomenally well. The use of synthesizers, the sound design, and vocals on this whole record are also great. But it has the same problem as most minimal-sounding albums do. In some parts, just nothing was really happening. It added to the atmosphere sometimes, but often the music felt way too slow uneventful. 7/10
Really strange album, I didn’t hate it
Pretty nice but not really what I was expecting.
Kinda like Debut - Björk
Indie electronic cabaret music about loneliness. Not a bad album at all but I'm not sure it deserves a spot on the list. Still a good listen though.
🥧
This sounds like a James Bond movie music audition. I loved Seventh Tree but this one hit differently. I love the singer's voice, I think she's fantastic. The overall vibe of this album is a bit too consistently low key and at times the electronica sounds subtracted rather than added. 3.25/5
Finally some music even my girlfriend can get behind. Thanks to you Goldfrapp for providing some common ground between her and me.
Hurry, Hurry...step right up to the Night Circus! Goldfrapp's debut is an elctro-eerie slow burn. Very intriguing with both an olde and futuristic sound. "Deer Stop" was like stepping into one of the dimly lit tents to watch an android sing about the yearning desire to feel human sexual contact. I can see this album as an act at the recently lost, Lost Spirits. Listening to this I'm deliciously wired, I'm falling in a cloud...2.75 stars.
Fine
It has a good sound, something a bit like dark jazz and James Bond music if it were a psychological thriller. Still, didn't grab me that much and I can't imagine going back to it anytime soon.
The singer has a fantastic voice. The sweeping orchestral, burlesque, ambient sound is not my favorite, but I can hear the artistry and believe it was probably influential (eg, Portishead). I don’t need to spin it myself, but I’m glad I heard it. A 3.
perfect 3 of an album
An interesting listen that blends ’60s cabaret vibe with a more modern electronic sound. The album somehow feels both ahead of and behind its time all at once, and it works surprisingly well. Overall, they pull it off—this is an enjoyable listen.
If Portishead ever made a mediocre album, it might sound a little like this
Great voice. Not what I expected. Not for me.
I liked this album, but it had a few tracks that dragged it down for me, and several with obnoxious sounds. This one just could've been a little better, but it's not bad. Favorite track(s): "Utopia"
Very nice and ambient. Gentle mood throughout with some cool harmonics and sounds that keep my attention. "Human" caught me off guard as Kanye sampled this for his "Freestyle 4" track from Life of Pablo - cool recognizing these connections. This is a nice one.
Never heard this before, it's totally new to me. Seems pretty good but hard to describe. Kind of artsy electric folk music. It's really good, very unique and interesting music and vocals. The vocals are kind of ethereal and haunting they go really well with the unique music.
Not a fan
Not bad. Cut rate Bjork with some beeps and boops. It’s be okay for background for a dinner with the in-laws. 2.5, up to 3 for Bjork
brought to mind an opening/closing sequence of a Bond film. Okay, but I'm not so sure I'd be so poorly off if I'd missed it before I died.
Goving this one the exact same rating as the other one: Ethereal and dreamy. Also boring. 3/5
Very atmospheric and seems very similar to Portishead's Dummy, which came out a few years before. With Dummy, when I actually listen to it rather than having it on in the background I still really like it. With this album I don't feel the same way.
I see the vision here, but I don’t think it’s quite for me. Felt very ghost-cabaret. It succeeded at being kind of weird and vibey, but will not be entering regular rotation for me.
As electronic music goes I guess it was ok even though a little weird. Didn’t hate it but won’t be listening to it again.
A surprisingly restrained sound for 90s/00s electronic music. Very soft, mysterious, understated – particularly in the two opening tracks, which are just an excellent way to start of the album in the most unexpected way possible. I'm a big fan of Goldfrapp's tiredly seductive vocals. They tickle the ear in just the right way, and mesh well with the strings, acoustic instruments, and (generally very soft) percussion. Speaking of percussion, it conjures a strange semi-Central American feel that sort of works, but is mostly quite confusing. Lots of exotic influence in the frenetic string lines (as heard in the song Human) and strange choices of instrument and melody (Oompah Radar). Some of it is good. And some of it is indecipherably odd. Underwhelming, even. Where the album gets frustrating is when it refuses to climb out of this "understatedness" rut. There's no "pick-up" moment, no point where Goldfrapp decides it's time to pull out the big guns. The audience gets 39 minutes of buildup with no payoff. The absolute peak (trough?) of this problem is in Felt Mountain, which is just devoid of any sort of energy. It makes Oompah Radar, an otherwise bizarre carnival-sounding instrumental, sound like a Led Zeppelin masterpiece by comparison. Utopia is also a much-needed step-up in pacing with a great thick-textured arrangement. Love the synths on that track. Horse Tears is just a better Felt Mountain. It's placed in a more fortunate spot, directly Utopia. The highest-energy song on the album followed by a soft but emotionally charged closer. 3/5 Key tracks: Lovely Head, Paper Bag, Utopia
listless and weird but not. I appreciate the dreamlike quality here and there, it sounds like music you'd hear in a high fantasy setting. Its easy to get bored of the tired sounding vocals though
A generous 3. This album was airy and dreamy and so disappointing compared to Seventh Tree. Plus the sounds and instruments they used on this album were just baffling at times. Some really annoying electronic noise. But that moment in the first song where there’s a weird distorted noise and then the distortion clears and you realize it’s her voice, was pretty cool. Other than that, skip this album
Pretty cool. Reminds me of Portishead a bit, but less "cool" smoky jazz club and more James Bond soundtrack. Nothing particularly novel here, but it's a sexy listen.
When I saw the category of Electronic, I thought this was going to be EDM or something like that, particularly with the name of the artist. It was not at all what I expected. Moody, a bit atmospheric. Interesting.
Interesting
Bond. James Bond.
3.2 2x enjoyed more than expected
I've listened to this album 3 times today and still couldn't decide if I liked it or not. At the time of writing this, this album has 17,000 reviews and a perfect 3.0 average rating. That seems right.
a breath of fresh air
Thank god we heard another Goldfrapp album before we died. This was so low key I almost missed it. That oompah song was weird. Fine.
Not as awful as 'shortlisted for the Mercury Prize' normally indicates. I am not convinced the material made the best out of the vocalist, who is very good indeed. There's a 1960s film score sound about the whole album. 3/5.
Issa vibe Elegant
3.3 It's unique, I think it's quite good, but its not my cup of tea. I feel like the album is a big build up to Utopia, it's pinnacle by far (reminiscent of Bjork's Unison on Vespertine), but then inexplicably goes on to showcast another slow dreary number. More Utopia, less Horse Tears please
*** an OK album, most tracks sounded alike. Easy listening.
Favorite Track: Human
Odd but in just the right way.
Odd and I didn't particularly like it, but I could at least see the point of it being on this list, unlike so many other albums.
A bit odd, but not unpleasant. It often reminded me of a James Bond theme song.
Never got it
this is very atmospheric and twin peaks-y….julee cruise for the 21st century. sounds far less dated than i might have expected—i feel like a lot of electronic music tends to be very identifiable by era, for better and for worse—although you can definitely hear the oncoming electroswing revival that would happen a couple years after this album was released, like the echo of ominous footsteps in the distance…some of it is a little too circus-y but overall i enjoyed it.
I really wasn’t a fan of this. I guess there’s nothing objectively wrong with it but it just wasn’t my style. It was a little too cabaret-like for me, and too much like it was from a movie, which is weird because usually I like when something feels cinematic, but in this case I didn’t. It sounded like James Bond music to me. I found some of the songs too repetitive and irritating although she has a gorgeous voice that I might enjoy better in a theater setting.
Nice, not more.
If you like Bjork you will enjoy this album, similar feel and textures.
kinda cool album at some parts, some other parts were boring thouh
Good music. Unique voice.
Not that bad in a strange way.
Real shame about the rise in popularity of the frappuccino because this music does not sound caffeinated at all. Felt Mountain is a cocktails and synthesizers vibe.
Really liked the first song but after that there was no real highlight anymore ... a bit dissapointing.
Alison's Goldfrapp half of the duo has an amazing voice and their influences contains folk, cabaret, pop and of course electronic elements where Alison is the queen with her synths. The result is a dramatic almost cabaret sound with sophisticated coctail music elegance, orchestral James Bond like strings kits and an Aphex Twin fx mood in songs bits. Most of the times you think you can almost hear a Theremin. This album could have been easily a soundtrack to a futuristic film noir if there is such a thing. Songs i enjoyed: Lovely Head is like an experimental 60's song, nostalgic and beautiful, Pilots is quite eerie almost operatic and dreamy with a twist, just a bit, In Deer Stop you need to have patience until the end to see how she tweaks her voice into something magical,to the very end though, In Felt Mountain the high notes along with the more electronic build is amazing reminded me of Balearic sounds ''it's a fine day''song vibes and 60's synth experimentalism, one of my favourites, --Oompa Radar really creeped me out,the weirdest thing ever, starts like a futuristic waltz, has a March turn, ends up like something it could have been played in American Horror series the ones with the circus weirdos,my least favourite-- Utopia is a more powerful electronic bliss, also a favourite, used to play a remix of it back in my Dj days, Overall it's not that good.no surprises there but yet it's sophisticated. At the end i will give it a 2.5, so 3/5 to me.
Best Song: Utopia I never heard of this. Then I started listening to the electronic music and I realized why - I'm not a big fan of electronic music. This isn't as bad as some electronica I have heard but still nothing I would ever listen to again. 3/5.
We're back to the Frapp, after a short hiatus, and I'm afraid that this one really didn't grab me in the same way as Seventh Tree did. It has some of the same positive elements - it's quite dreamlike, the vocals are lovely - but was much more easy to ignore. There just wasn't quite the same level of memorable songwriting. Still, I'm not complaining, it was perfectly decent.
This album was very interesting. I got some weird James Bond vibes from some of the songs, honestly, though not entirely sure why. The singing also reminded me a lot of Broadway.
Blending folk and electronica in a sometimes fun and interesting, sometimes clowny and ridiculous, fusion. The songs that gave dimly lit club with James Bond love interest vibes are great, the ones that felt like baby's first FL Studio session are not.
Ihan kiinnostava pop-levy 2000-luvulta. mut ei kyllä nelonen kuitenkaan.
A nice listen. More style over substance but I enjoyed it anyway
Strange album, sounds like a bunch of silent movie theme songs. It doesn't really grab me, but I dig the experimental feel. Still, it would be a 2.5 for me probably. Bumping.
I've heard of this artist and some of their music. Interested to check out their album. A little too mellow for me but definitely respect and realize why this is in this list. Very artistic.
It's a weird album, but kinda fun in it's own way. The Kanye sample hit me out of left field.
I likethe enigmatic whimsy of this album. Oompah Radar is definitely the highlight for me, I could very well hear it as BGM in a game like Fran Bow- and that's saying something! The singer's voice has a sirenic quality to it, I was mesmerized by Horse Tears especially. It's not exactly the kind of album that I'll put on loop for months on end...but it evoked a very unique mood.
An odd album. Very ethereal sounding. I liked it, except when I didn’t. There’s one song that wouldn’t sound out of place at a spooky carnival, and not in a good way.
An album of Bond Theme songs.
Lovely album but not nearly their best work. Doesn't deserve to be here.
Unique but got uninteresting pretty fast.
Interesting, kinda trip hop adjacent
Gear: Abyss DIANA MR Artwork: 👱♀️🪞👱♀️ Production: 🎧😘🤌 Music: 🌌🎹🎻 Rating: 🪮🪮🪮(🪮)/5
I enjoyed a lot of this. Felt like I was the understudy listening to the soundtrack of a James Bond film. It was definitely more pleasant than some of the other ambient sounding albums on this exercise.
I was digging the first half of this. Really unique blend of styles with the jazzy, Smokey bar vocals and some electronic type stuff coming in. Some songs sounded like a Bond soundtrack. There were a couple songs towards the back that lost me. Seemed a bit like throwaways or incomplete ideas. Overall still enjoyed. 2.75
I listened to this on Friday and had pretty much forgotten it existed by Monday. I remember thinking it was pretty cool so mid tier rating it is. 2.75/5
Very dark and moody. File it under I can appreciate what it is but also don’t need to listen to any of it again
I feel like this album has so much potential and I love the sound of it, but not quite an all timer. There's some stunning tracks on there but generally pulled out to a 3.5ish.
There's something strangely comforting about these songs, and I can't quite put my finger on it... Sometimes it sounds soft, like a "morning sounds" you put on while having breakfast, and other times it sounds like the soundtrack to a thriller. It's not something I'd listen to every day, but it was a very interesting experience. 3 stars.
Has some really nice songs and atmosphere but it also lacks consistency in their songwriting. Nice but not great
The vibe and overall atmosphere are very well made and captivating. I would just have hope a little more wild twists and efficient songwriting. Great album, tho!
I'll give this girl a few points because her music's really sexy
One of those albums that reminds you this book was written by a British guy, because no one outside of the UK has ever listened to Goldfrapp willingly. Neither weird enough to work as experimental music nor catchy enough to be pop music — with the notable exception of the excellent Air/Portishead knockoff "Utopia."
It was pleasant. Very Bond-y but a bit sleepy. Might revisit.
Her vocals make electronica interesting. I can't say that I am a true fan, but I am intrigued and keep listening to the eerie, throaty, weirdly delicate and inviting compositions.
This was haunting and ethereal and I remember the fuss around it when it came out. I prefer the two following albums though. This was Alison getting into her stride but Ooh la la she got better.
Sweet, haunting songs that seemed like they were from a 60s noir movie.
This was OK. Felt like Bond-movie music. Also serious Portishead vibes (who also feel like Bond-movie music). Not sure how essential this is, but it's chill.
(3.5 stars)
Quite a few of the tracks sounds like James Bond opening songs for movies that done exist. That’s a compliment. Alternates between engaging and bizarre. I was never bored. But my patience was tested a few times. 3/5
Ya había escuchado algunos discos de Goldfrapp, esta bien para de repente escuchar algo que te puede relajar, pero no es mi gusto favorito.
Slow cinematic and moody, this combines pre-rock loungey jazz with big orchestral production and post-rock atmospherics with emphasis on texture and tension - these two moments are merged through the filter of late 90s ambient electronica and downtempo trip hop beats.
Listened Before? N It's a good album. Goldfrapp is a cool project. This is their third album on this list. That is not necessary or wanted. Sleepy electronic music to nap to. Added to Library: N Songs added to playlist: Lovely Head
so bizarrely good and bad
I’ve only heard the later, dancier stuff, so I guess I didn’t realize that Goldfrapp sounds like this, too. Really think Fellini would’ve loved some of these songs at the end.
Great voice and production. Reminds me of Tim Burton movies! I especially liked “Deer Stop”, “Felt Mountain” and “Oompa Radar”. Wouldn’t have discovered this album without the list! Although I liked several songs, it’s not something I would listen to on a regular basis. I’ll look a little more into the band and their songs, because I found the album haunting and elegant - I enjoyed listening! :)
vibey but soporific
3.5/5
I have to admit, although I was aware of Goldfrapp, I never really listened to any of there music outside of their singles chart fare. There's plenty to like here though - sweeping, cinematic and with a perverse melodic sense which is jazzy without ever descending into muzak and sassy without ever being smug. Yeah, I'm sure I'll listen to this again, it's like the weird electronic soundtrack to an imaginary 60s movie - it just lacks something *special*, a lot of the songs play out as interesting ideas that don't really go anywhere. That's not to say a big, fat sing-along chorus is appropriate for every type of song, just that Felt Mountain kind of gently trickles by you without ever really grabbing you by the scruff of the neck and demanding you pay attention. It's a pleasant experience from start to finish nonetheless, maybe just not entirely for my default mood and tastes.
Pleasant.
Moody and well done, but lacked variety overall.
This is a fun album, that nice blend of pop and a more techno jazz sound. Not a-list material but there's plenty in there to like - certainly a few songs at least for the b-list. 3/5 stars.
Decent background music maybe?
a david lynch/vampire movie soundtrack 6,89/10
This was in my regular rotation something like 15 years ago. It's nostalgic to go back to, but doesn't quite hit the same for me anymore. Interesting and chill downtempo production, but doesn't catch me like it did. *heard before
Liked this more than I thought I would
I’m a bit up and down with this album. I listened to it while on a drive and getting somewhat stuck in traffic. I liked how ambient it was at times, and it sounded very much like it could be a James Bond theme at multiple points. However, despite all of this, it has given me no longing to listen to it again. I felt like it was pretty interesting, but I’d have felt let down if I’d have paid money for the album rather than streaming it on Apple Music.
Goldfrapp’s 2000 debut is a dreamy and cinematic album blending ambient electronica with cabaret and classic trip-hop. Alison Goldfrapp’s vocals float elegantly over the stylish arrangements, but the album’s slow pace and theatrical tone become a bit too polished and distant over time. At moments, it even drifts into circus-like territory, and the cabaret elements can feel overpowering. Beautifully produced, but lacking the emotional depth and edge found in artists like Portishead and Björk. 3/5
I kept wishing it sounded a little more like Portishead or Air.
Pretty good
3 its fine
Ni puta idea. Es música realmente extraña. Cómo de una escena de David Lynch. Parece algo de principios del siglo XX visto por una mirilla de los años 90.
Kinda weird, but not bad weird. Human sounds like it's from a Bond movie soundtrack
Great voice, weird music but in a good way
i'll revisit one day
Definitely interesting.. Wouldn't listen to it on the regular but definitely is a good album!
interesting
Mysterious and exotic. Am i in a James bond film? Variety of instrumentations mostly slower tracks, but lively and provocative.
i liked it a lot actually. sounds like the soundtrack of a weird movie i’m not cool enough to get
There was some cool stuff here. I especially liked “Human.” It sounded like it should be on a Bond film.
coming into this one, I wasn't expecting a lot, and fortunately, I was wrong. This is a beguiling little album that deserves a second listen.
This album contains a number of beautifully-written and arranged songs, but the weird mix often does a poor job of meshing Alison Goldfrapp's close-mic'd and treated voice with the orchestral instruments behind her. (And I don't know what's going on with "Deer Stop", but she sounds positively spitty on that track.) The glitchy synth effects that also appear throughout are an interesting idea that's successful only some of the time. A promising but uneven debut.
mysterious weird girl album ★★★
There’s something here but it doesn’t quite have it Utopia and Lovely Head are great
It was alright no standout tracks though
Recorded well, sounds good…not really what I want to listen to that much
Entspannt und irgendwie dreamy, ganz cool eigentlich. Trotzdem nichts, was ich nochmal anmachen würde. 2-3/5
It's got a cool vibe, but it's nothing mind blowing.
Very interesting, such a unique vibe.
Good background music nothing outstanding
I saw Goldfrapp live circa 2003/2004, and she played a theremin with her crotch, which may be why I was expecting this to be more exciting than it was,
A couple songs gave me "James Bond" vibes. I don't know exactly what makes me think that, but there's time where it feels like they were writing for a Bond title track. The last half felt a little undercooked, but there's something to enjoy in here.
Id say average. Wont listen to it again but not terrible
pretty but probably wouldnt come back to it
Good Not as good as their other album on the list but good. The circus song kinda hurts the momentum but good
Sexy music - this sounds like the future which Barbarella promised us. This album takes its time to reach a crescendo, but that high point is a satisfying surge which brings the album's diverse moods and gorgeous production to a unifying high point, before dissolving and ebbing away in an alluring denouement. Cinematic and sumptuous. Favourite tracks: Lovely Head, Pilots, Deer Stop, Utopia
Human is a standout, album is good but wierd. Very interesting and lovely sound but too wierd for pop succees
Hmm. I really liked this at first - namely, the first two tracks - but comparing it to the other trip-hop kind of albums on the list, I’m not sure how well it distinguishes itself. When I heard the Portishead album a few days into this, I thought it was really cool and unusual, and while I still like that style, it’s starting to feel a bit gimmicky. I’m being a little too harsh, maybe. On the whole, I liked this (except for “Oompa Radar,” which I kind of hated). 3.5?
I remember this album : ) damn can she sing, quite a unique TwinPeaksy indie movie soundtrack vibe, Utopia and Lovely Head the best ones.
There is an elegance that pervades this record while not always being polite either. No truly weak moments - this works as a piece bridging the gap between old and new. As expressive a voice as anyone of the era. 3.5 stars.
weird
Oh, I'm vibing to this album. Felt Mountain is a delicious blend of electronica and moody ambience. I loved how each song wove into another, sometimes air-y or ethereal or reminiscent of the circus, making for a smooth listen. In my experience trip hop tends to be more abrasive, but Goldfrapp managed to use electronic music to make it more calming. Goldfrapp, I suspect, is more known her electric-pop instead of this electronic ambiance music. Her electronic-pop music is way more fun, but she brings her A game and creates such a beautiful album in Felt Mountain. 3.5
First third of this had me hootin and hollering. Less clubby and more weirdo than I previously knew from Goldfrapp. Then the rest of the thing had a smattering of circus music sounding songs and there’s not much in this world that can sour me on an album quicker than that. People like to rag on ICP (to this day!) but the truth is there was a solid 20 years where the coolest thing anyone could imagine was a dark carnival. Even cool Europeans. That’s the truth.
I remember one of my friends was obsessed with Goldfrapp after this came out, and I never bothered to check them out. I can't say that was the wrong choice, unfortunately. It's not a bad album, but it doesn't do anything for me personally. Portishead, Bjork, and Massive Attack mine similar sonic territory and far better than this. Felt Mountain mostly fades into the background until I forget I'm still listening to it, and by tomorrow I probably won't be able to tell you what it sounded like. If we're putting Mercury winners on here, then someone needs to add English Teacher's This Could Be Texas from 2024.
Still not totally my thing but nonetheless a pretty complete, baroque sound, so I'll give it some props. Though I think I mixed this person up with Santigold for a long time which kept me from digging into Santigold, who I really love, so I gotta dock some cred for that
Nice I guess
this really sounded like stereolab, i honestly enjoyed it!! it was way better that the piece of shit album of theirs we listened earlier in this process
Interesting album, with a few songs that stand out but honestly kind of dull. I saw them open for Coldplay ages ago, and their set was significantly better than this. That said, Alison has a great voice.
Vibey. It's like if Portishead were 30% more influenced by James Bond themes.
Interesting trip-hop like album. Lovely Head and Pilots as my favourites. Missing something compared to the best trip-hop albums though.
This is mostly just boring Portishead. There's a few interesting tracks like one that sounded like Danny Elfman soundtrack stuff, and a few of the tracks sound like they'd be good for opening a James Bond movie. Overall, not bad but not something I'd wanna revisit. 2.75/5
Everything I thought I knew about Goldfrapp was a lie. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was different than that. I was hoping for something a bit more dancey, less moody spy music. Her meowing voice reminded me of the Björk songs I'm not in to.
Against all odds I sort of enjoyed this. Like a vibey, toned-down, and extended James Bond theme
Decent ambient sounding electronic music. Good for background listening, reminded me of a movie soundtrack. Will probably check out the artist's other albums.
No private session for Spotify used. I knew Goldfrapp, but never listened to an album. Mellow, interesting, part ambient, part James Bond music, some portishead.
Moody and atmospheric in a way that I enjoy, but can also tire of quickly. Part White Lotus, part circus, part goth in music form, and yes, I have tired of it.
2.5/5
Liked it, electronic music meets violins at times it got samey but I liked the vibes through out.
It was something new, didn't really like it or hate it just a breath of fresh air. I guess I enjoyed it on some level.
6/10 This was good background music while I was focussing on a job application but unfortunately that might not be a good thing - although the whistling on Lovely Head is as captivating as ever (I've been a fan of that song for a while). Listens: 2
3,5
Sort os James Bond-ish and Severance soundtracky. Not bad
Nice enough but kind of a let down by the end. Ended up listening to it three times in a row while traveling but that didn't improve it for me.
Reminded me of st Vincent, who i like better, but this was still pretty good.
This is fine. I don't really enjoy this type of music, but it's not bad. I guess I would describe it like Bjork but better.
3.5
Groupe inconnu. =>3/5
I was surprised by this one. Reminiscent of Portishead. Great rainy day in New York music.
I’m surprised to see a second Goldfrapp album on the list. I really liked the other one (Seventh Tree), but this one didn’t blow me away. It’s fine throughout, just nothing magical
These songs all feel like they could be the title song for a James Bond film.
Sounds like it could be a Bond movie soundtrack. Not a bad thing. 3+
Starts off sounding like the intro song from a James Bond movie in feel. Well, at least until the spooky solo comes in. From there it pretty much stays spooky. I remember not being into the songs I heard when these guys first came out, but I was 19 back then. Now I can see the appeal. Kind of cool in a throwback way. Definitely unique. 3.4.
Lovely, weird trip hop-ish music
Schön...
Sounds like a sexy James Bond soundtrack.
This was a gorgeous album! Goldfrapp's voice is amazing, and the songs had a timeless quality to them thanks to her vocals against the production. Really enjoyed this record, will have to listen to more from Goldfrapp!
Not sure about this version of Goldfrapp, beautiful in a lot of ways but kinda creeped me out, not sure I’ll be listening again.
After Shirley Bassey got ressurrected by a Proppellerheads smash Hit Alison Goldfrapp went down the path between uncanny Sound of Music alps and its soundscape interpretation of technicolor
Not the strongest impression (it sort of fades into the background, especially when not paying strict attention to it) but an impression nonetheless, and a decently moody one at that. Will need to revisit.
Haunting and lovely.
Nothing special about this. It just makes it over the midway.
Ominous, dark good album 3.5
Keeping for the shuffle, great background music for chilling.
Don't think I'd ever heard this before. My main interaction with Goldfrapp is the album Black Cherry, which leans much more towards electro-pop. Was surprised how this felt much more in keeping with trip-hop with a far mellower, laid back sound. Unfortunately I think that does kind of show it to be a bit lacking compared to the more chill electronica acts of the time. Felt Mountain is a nice, pleasant album, but it doesn't feel remarkable when you consider the likes of Air, Portishead, etc
very seductive. I can hear this as a soundtrack for a neo-noir movie
Felt Mountain has pretty unique production that was probably innovative at the time. It's obvious to me that many producers across genres were influenced by Goldfrapp and this album. Some DangerMouse and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs songs have the same haunting feeling as those on this album. Anyway, I liked this album but it isn't an all-timer for me or a happy surprise. Best Songs: Lovely Head, Pilots, Utopia Worst Songs: Oompah Radar
3.5
Any one else notice the artwork of Alison Goldfrapp's doubled head looks like a vagina? I can't unsee it! Feel it's gonna be a similar to my review of Seventh Tree... I enjoyed it, unfortunately quite forgettable.
Cool cool cool
what a strange eclectic album i got to immerse in diverse experiences like - the music that plays when the villain in a n64 game has dialogue (oompah radar) - whatever human is (human) i thought this album was fairly more interesting than the other goldfrapp album i received
Pretty good
A lot of the album, puts me in mind of Bond. As well as the lush strings, and reverbed vocals, there are dramatic semitone movements everywhere. 'Lovely Head' in particular is a zombie-cowboy apocalyptic track of excellence. After a good opening run the pace slows down to a drag, with the painful Deer Stop, a third-rate Portishead rip off. Then a couple that go a bit too cabaret for my liking. The second half highlight is undoubtedly Utopia. Absolutely spellbinding mash up of 50s pop, Barry orchestral manoeuvres, Lynchian bleakness, and indie rock. On balance a high three. ⭐⭐⭐
Mi è piaciuto più o meno
Best toffe vibe, maar de nummers doen me niet zo veel
Thought I would like this but no
I have no strong feelings about this album. I probably wouldn't listen again, but I also probably wouldn't shut it off if someone put it on.
This sounds like some ethereal lounge music. Not bad, but nothing to write home about.
Nice voice and arrangement but overall a little boring. Only 39 minutes though so I’ll be reasonable.
Pleasant but a bit dull compared to the other album if theirs on this list
Felt Mountain is the debut album from Goldfrapp, a British pair made up of singer Alison Goldfrapp and producer Will Gregory. In their first album, they use ambient electronics with subtle orchestrations as support for vocals delivered in a cabaret style. The result is a version of trip hop, comparable to Portishead. These are graceful, seductive songs with engaging melodies and Goldfrapp's sultry, expressive voice. They employ a range of rhythms, with some hints of the more danceable material the pair produced later in their career.
It's a really atmospheric album. It feels as if it were a soundtrack to an open world videogame, while you explore a dark city with misterious things happening. It has a slight cabaret feel which makes it really unique.
Prefer later Goldfrapp to this one. It was fine, but nothing special.
Some of this was too weird but it was really atmospheric. Like being on a foggy mountain.
I was concerned during the first song, but I was interested by "Human". Lost me again a few times though. 2.7.
i like goldfrapp and i like the idea of the album. it just became a bit repetitive
Cute record
It's a vibe. Not one I can listen to for hours but its not bad either.
Feels like the output of a school assignment to write an album of rejected 80s James Bond themes in the style of Bjork. That said, it wasn’t a bad listen.
I quite liked this, and I don't think I'd heard anything off this album before. Somehow... 3.75
Indie electronica.. weird stuff here and there. Exciting melancholic stuff here and there.. kind of an ok album
I found Felt Mountain an interesting endeavor but lacking in energy and excitement. That doesn’t mean it isn’t good. It’s very good. Allison Goldfrapp is an excellent singer and a highly capable lyricist. I enjoyed a lot of this record, but it didn’t grab me in any meaningful way. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-felt-mountain-by-goldfrapp?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
Well I enjoyed it. I prefer some of their dance tracks but this was mainly mellow and an accompaniment to what I was doing.
Really? Goldfrapp has two albums on here? I don't know chief. I mean, I don't dislike Goldfrapp. I think both this and Seventh Tree are solid albums. I just don't think that Goldfrapp is noteworthy enough for two albums. Anyways, let's talk about Felt Mountain for a bit. I say "a bit" because I don't have much to say. This album kind of reminds me of Björk in a way. I've also seen comparisons to Portishead that I can kind of see. I like Portishead more though. The sound of this album is mostly good. There's some parts that don't interest me, but the variety in this album's sound is certainly respectable. The singing is kind of weird, but I wouldn't call it bad. This album's alright. I don't know which of the two I like more. Because of that, I'll give this album the same rating I gave to Seventh Tree. High 3/5. Good album.
Zanima me u kojem će smjeru otići jer je prva stvar dosta lagana.
Went by without much for me to say really.
This was a interesting record, but definitely sounds like a study of rejected James Bond movie theme songs. I like the singer’s ethereal voice and the arrangements. That said, one time listening to this is more than enough for me. 3⭐️
I like their following few albums better.
Sounds like if you asked ai to generate an album of James Bond theme songs
The author really likes his 90s British electronica. Sounded like an even more downtempo Portishead. Very James Bond-y. Boring at first but grew on me a bit. I could see putting this on around the house. I am duty-bound to acknowledge Kanye West's sampling of "Human" on "Freestyle 4" (The Life of Pablo)
This is totally unlike any Goldfrapp Ove heard before. It’s perfectly pleasant, but I think I prefer their louder, raunchier stuff.
Like the last Goldfrapp album, had to listen to it a couple times and I really enjoyed it on the second listen. Great background music. A bit odd. A few songs sounded like James Bond theme songs, which I thought was pretty cool.
Some cool stuff going on here. Interesting sounds. I liked the more downtempo tone from the previously reviewed albums.
Interesting, kinda cool
A fun listen but can't say it left a big impression on me. Love her vocals though, and some of the beats are silky smooth, just a little non-descript overall.
Interesting sound to this, kind of a an electronic tinged Bond soundtrack. Got a little monotonous towards the middle.
This was alright. Reminded me a little of Florence and the machine but not as good.
too many circusy tunes
Almost sounds like a Bond singer.
An interesting listen. Lot of gothic and chill vibes. Definitely got a 50's/60's sound scape to it. This is an album I might come back to later, but 3/5 for now!
Not bad. Never listened to it before. It's less weird bjork, which is good. Prob won't be working it's way into the rotation.
This is a little too musical theatre for me. There are some cool moments though.
Early 21st century dinner party music (I was there) but what a beautiful voice and arrangements.
Thought they were a glam thing, apparently that came later, this was good
Very angsty
Decent album that didn’t really fully click with me. Something I’d probably listen to on a cold winter night, or walking in the snow or something. Kinda felt like portishead light a little bit to me but some beautiful songs on it nonetheless
Lush. Favourite track was Lovely Head. I just wonder however. Some albums feel like 'look what we can do' albums. Is this one of them?
Haunting. Critically acclaimed, but the UK album buying public didn't seem to agree with the critics.
At times hauntingly beautiful, and at others painfully dull. 2.5* rounding up to 3 to account for the possibility I was just grumpy before playing this. Definitely need to be in the right space for melancholy electronica.
3.5
Not my style of music, but the interesting use of human voice as an instrument gets my attention.
Interesting. Definitely one I wouldn't have found/listened to otherwise.
The album sounds at times like the background music of an old Star Trek TOS episode.
Beautiful voice, but not seeing much point to the very safe arrangements of these songs. I suppose just not my cup of tea.
