I actually quite liked this. Despite it being described as an electronic album. It wasn't too repetitive, like most of the other electronic albums on the list.
surprising myself with this one. sounds like it should have been made in the 70s
never heard it before even though I love Goldfrapp. It’s less electro, more dramatic, jazzy at times, very soft, slower. Beautiful like everything she does.
Great tunes and creativity thx!
Liquid wonderfulness. Went into this thinking it was just two or three songs and a load of filler (and admittedly there's an oompa track on there!?!) but it's a velvety mellifluous creme brulee for the ears.
This is some crazy, but fun, music to listen to. Also, it makes me feel like I'm running some kind of underground club from the 1920's when people walk into my office from the "normal world". It might go on my normal rotation.
Wow, only song of theirs I knew before was Oh La La, which real heads will know was featured in she’s the man. This was not like that, but still a remarkable listen. I’m finding that I really prefer albums like this because I tend to listen while working and tunes like these get me into the groove.
This album is like a tree you are passing by every day going to work. Completly mundane and unassuming but if you stop for a second you can see melancholy and beauty. It could be medicore 3 or heartwrenching 5 if you let it. Amazing music but it requires a little bit of work from a listener.
Pretty great. Not heard it before, but have added to my spotify playlists.
Not quite my bag at points, but can appreciate how good it is
Nice, catches from the beginning on. Like a classic symphony but added weirdness spice
Beautiful, beguiling, slinky, seductive, mystical, mysterious, off-kilter, quirky, magical. I like this way better than the other Goldfrapp album I’ve gotten from this list (Seventh Tree). Reminiscent of both trip-hop, downtempo stuff, as well as art-pop like Kate Bush and Talk Talk. On first listen I was a little uncertain but on a second listen, I was totally sold. Must-listen #216.
Strange News from Another Star
Exquisite.
Very interesting, avant garde experimental kinda thing, beautiful at moments.
radiohead for women.
Fantastic sounds, caught somewhere between a horror script in the 1930’s and the future!
Slow evenings to the circus 🎪 🌙
interesting
Extremely beautiful and emotional!
Simplemente perfecto
Extreme magbay vibes. Really enjoyed this and will probably like it even more on subsequent listenings. I'm giving it 4 with no reference point. Might change to 5 eventually if I am able to.
Pure slice of crooning heaven. Her voice is majestic with an amazing range. And, rather than just “classic” sounding stuff (ahem, Amy Winehouse) she stretched the song writing form and her self. The result is amazing.
My hot take: This is just as interesting and experimental as anything on Kid A, which came out around the same time and is considered a landmark album. The musical is whimsical and experimental, but the immediate impression I got from "You're Lovely Head" was luxurious. The textures throughout are lush, and it mixes orchestration and electronic elements seamlessly.
One of the greatest triphop albums. Mystic and cool. What a time that was!
I had never heard of Goldfrapp before today, and from the very first musical phrase of the very first track of this album I was spellbound. The lead singer's voice is so pure and clear, and the way shield wields it was truly something to behold. I've heard professional instrumentalists without the level of control and pitch that she shows on this album. The rest of the instrumentation was also tight and professional, and the writing and production were also excellent. I really enjoyed this album and listened to it all the way through twice. Five stars.
very nice trip hop stuff
I really enjoyed this album. I was aware of it from when Kanye sampled 'human' in 2016, but I'm glad I hadn't fully listened to it until now. It's very cinematic, sounding like the backdrop to a film noir thriller about a evil female protagonist, cross sci fi mystery, cross evil circus?. The songs are hauntingly beautiful, featuring operatic singing, classical instrumentation and weird weird ear candy. What a pleasure to listen to, favourite album so far. Fav tracks - All
Bébé Paul s'est endormi dessus hier soir. Il donne un parfait 5/5. Ben chillos et relaxant comme petit album.
😍😍😍
Instant 5 stars
Beautiful. Delightful. I'm honestly upset I haven't heard of them before now, seeing how I'm a huge Portishead fan. And i must say this is in the same vein as Porishead, albeit slower, and with a vastly different singer.
What
Listened before - banger!!!!
Never listened to this album before but really dig Goldfrapp. Super chill and smooth with a little bit or an eerie vibe to it
Love this album! 5 stars.
oh! I like this one! I really only know some of Goldfrapp's later hits after they went in a more dance-music direction. This particular album is very different from those later songs. I really like this. Feels like a natural progression from where Portishead left off with their first 2 albums. Glad this is on the list. Something I wasn't familiar with that I ended up really liking!
So good. I had heard of Goldfrapp before, but never got around to listen to the whole album before. This is the THE downbeat album I need in my life. It perfectly vibes with my mood today. Generally, I would put this on my list for tired evenings or lazy autumn afternoons. It's really that good. 5/5
paranormal sensual experience.
My adibing memory of this album is my friend James lending it to me, and me accidentally placing it in a beer spillage on a table in Barnstaple 'spoons. It was one of those cardboard digipaks, so it was irreparably damaged. Sorry, James! Boring anecdote aside, this is still superb; a bit of an anomaly, taking Britpop's fetishism of the 60s to an extreme level, embracing both John Barry-esque strings, electronica, and more cult instruments and sounds, with Goldfrapp's heartbroken voice tying it all together.
Gorgeous tripoticca that's moody, melancholic, menacing, captivating, weird and unsettling: perfect foda for a Quentin Tarantino movie. I enjoyed this a lot.
Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain First time in a long time where I listen to a beautiful album, this sounds majestic, every song on here tells it's unique little story using harmonies and melodies to accompany with. The vocalist blends really well in with the instrumentals, and overall, it makes up for what is a short yet cohesive, and well-arranged album, this is great! (also, didn't expect to see kanye sample "human", that took me by surprise lol) 1.- Lovely Head = 9/10 2.- Paper Bag = 10/10 3.- Human = 10/10 4.- Pilots = 10/10 5.- Deer Stop = 9/10 6.- Felt Mountain = 8/10 7.- Oompah Radar = 8/10 8.- Utopia = 9/10 9.- Horse Tears = 9/10 FINAL SCORE = 9.1/10
Interesting album. I'm not sure why this is labeled electronica. But this is the type of stuff I'm here for. Albums that I would never have heard. The mighty generator comes through again.
Wow. What an unexpected surprise from this one. Chill throughout. The synths are cool, the vocals are perfect for the ambiance this album creates. Oompah Radar is the only one on this album that felt out of place. Why the upbeat carnival song thrown in? It could have easily been taken off the track listing and the album would be better for it.
Wow this is gonna be the sixth perfect album through 517 albums and the first where I had no prior knowledge of the album/band beforehand. It is obviously not as groundbreaking as Portishead whom I love (haven't gotten any of theirs to rank yet so that might be another perfect score in future) but still incorporates the best of Trip-Hop along with taking influences from other genres I love. Every song felt unique to me and the album art is awesome too. Finds like this are why this 1001 albums project is so fun. You never know when you'll find another gem that's perfect for your taste. Rating: 5.0
Temacous
After suffering through a different Goldfrapp album on this list, I was not excited to pull this album. I'm glad I followed through and listened because this was not what I remember from the other album. Felt Mountain covers a lot of genres that makes you think of many of the great classics, but in the end, this recored felt like a 40 minute James Bond movie introduction - and that's not a bad thing. 5/5.
Incredible and unique! The genre fusions at display here are unlike anything else in electronic music. Is this even electronic? I have seen this album described as downtempo or trip-hop. And sure a song like "Utopia" definitely falls into downtempo, but I think those descriptions don't make it justice. To me this is a sort of uncanny valley lounge music, something you will hear in your dreams and then wake up and wonder if it really exists. All tracks here are top-notch, even the weird circus cut "Oompa Radar". Goldfrapp's subsquent albums all sound different from this and from each other, going into Electropop, Folktronica, Synthpop, and Chamber Folk, and mastering every single one of those genres as well. Key tracks: Lovely Head Paper Bag Human Pilots Utopia
Amazing! Sexy, jazzy, bond with an electronic twist. Goldfrapp hooked me with this album from the moment I saw the song and film clip for Utopia on Rage. This album has stood the test of time and sparked a love affair for me, with an artist as iconic as Kylie Minogue
beautifully melancholic vocals intertwined with hauntingly atmospheric electro-cabaret and cinematic soundscapes
Love this album equal parts magical and messed up.
Fantastic album.

This is so sick and experimental
Awesome, hadn't heard all of this before :)
Perfect. I’m in awe
5/5
Heard bits of this before but never listened to it in full - great album. The only miss for me was Oompa Radar...
God, I am an absolute sucker for great vocals on top of experimental electronic vibes. Every song has a unique character to it that contributes to the gentle, delirious miasma of the album as a whole. It seems to me that there's a strong trip hop influence here, with effort to expand the types and sources of sound present in the classic stuff. It largely pays off and gives it more of an ambient backing. Frankly, this lit up my brain quite a lot when I listened to it, it strongly expanded my appreciation for a genre I've yet to get into very much, and for that, a five feels appropriate.
I'm a huge fan of The Seventh Tree, and haven't really listened to much else form Goldfrappe, and that which I have listened to has been a bit too 'disco' for me - yet this is definitely up there with Seventh Tree for me. Great album.
Gorgeous ethereal sound stage with excellent production. Use of the human voice as an instrument with no lyrics can be both frustrating and immersive. I loved this album
Kind of eccentric but surprisingly I fw it heavy. To be honest I kinda zoned out on a couple of the songs but on a second listen they are not bad, just weren't catchy enough to interest me the first time. Cool instrumentals and lots of unique ideas, I particularly liked the blend between electronic sound and real instruments (piano and strings). 4, a very stimulating listen that I may even consider giving a 5
It's been a while since I listened to this, but, it's still stunning.
Lush and lovely, I was absolutely swept away by this wonderful album. A little slice of electronified mid-century lounge exotica. I thought it was absolutely perfectly done.
We do appreciate a haunted cabaret circus around these parts.
Awesome find!!!
Muy bonito. No es precioso, pero merece un 5.
Fascinating artist... In this album she brings in 1960s pop and spy movie touches along with early 20th century burlesque.
A treat for the ears !
Really inspiring
Lovely, gorgeous. Loved this for many years. Soon as the theramin hits in Lovely Head you know you are in for something special. Clearly heavily influenced by John Barry in places, particularly Paper Bag. Properly blissful. Utopia is magnificent. Surprised by the divisive reviews, if this isn't for you fair enough, but one star reviews saying it's just... boring, or nothing, I cannot connect with on any level. I guess some people don't like interesting music, I quite clearly just don't understand. Listening today to Horse Tears I am reminded of the For the Damaged Coda by Blonde Redhead (Rick and Morty evil Morty theme) which came out around the same time.
Incredibly diverse, unique, catchy.
Liked it more with each time listening
I fucking loved this. Listened on the way to Bean's birthday dinner and then again this morning. I want this on vinyl!
Very much my vibe. Would definitely listen again.
Lovely
Every artist in the world of music who breaks the barrier of the easy formula, the sameness of the fashion of a decade or the convention of the record companies ends up standing out. Technical quality and stylistic harmony define this album.
One of my fav albums ever, glad to find it here.
Heel mooi
It's criminal for an album to be this good
Very Good 8,5/10
Really haunting and beautiful album. I loved it from the get go. 😍 Love Alison Goldfrapp's vocals.
Aces. Atmospheric, cinematic, chilly and warm all at once. The hard heel turn Alison and Will took into the glam-rock stomp of Black Cherry put many people off, but I see the two as halves of a whole. Embracing the goddess in all her aspects.
Very sadistic and slowed
I've always been a big fan of Goldfrapp, I remember when this came out I was instantly into it. Listening now it's hard to choose a favourite track but I think Utopia would have to be it.
I’d never heard this before and kind of assumed that I wouldn’t like it. So it was a pleasant surprise to find that this album is actually quite good. This is some lush sounding lounge-influenced electronica with sultry vocals. The analog synths
i have heard this album already in the past, but i'll give it a rating Lovely Head - 4/5 Paper Bag - 4/5 Human - 3/5 Pilots - 5/5 Deer Stop - 4/5 Felt Mountain - 3/5 Oompa Radar - 3/5 Utopia - 5/5 Horse Tears - 4/5 Average score: 3.9/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ i think this barely breached the 4-star range, mostly due to the fact that she's got a lovely voice i think as far as trip hop artists go, Goldfrapp isn't necessarily my favorite project. it's kinda hard to stand out next to Portishead and the like. this is still a nice listen and the vocalist is very talented, but this is more of an album i'd passively listen to in the background rather than actively seek out and enjoy
Goldfrapp just being effortlessly cool
I listened to a few singles from Goldfrapp within the past two years. The general sense I got from the duo of vocalist Alison Goldfrapp and keyboardist Will Gregory was that they're an electroclash group, combining elements of electronic dance, synth-pop, techno, and performance art into their style. However, with their debut record, Felt Mountain, the better descriptor I got from their early start was electro-cabaret. Yeah, this record is an eerily ambient mixture of electronic, folk, and cabaret music, taking cues from cinematic scores to weave out a collection of songs that explore feelings of isolation, obsession, deception, and unrelenting animalistic tendencies. Alison paints a perverse scene with her sultry vocals, using evocative imagery and metaphors to describe these complex emotions amidst the swelling strings, ebbing synthesizers, and occasional electronic glitches. No two songs sound alike, such as the heavily processed vocals and whistling on the album opener "Lovely Head", the demented Latin groove with striking percussion on "Human", the futuristic ballad "Pilots", the cracking whip sounds paired with the light yodeling on the title track, the demented brass-filled waltz with abstract singing on "Oompah Radar", or the trip-hop operatic confrontation against perfectionism on "Utopia". This album does genuinely feel unique. I might not like all the tinkering on this record, such as the filtering effects applied to Alison's vocals on "Deer Stop" as she described this trapped relationship, or the off-kilter tremolo guitar motif opposite the filtered organ on the closing track "Horse Tears". But more often than not, I was awe-struck by this bizarre, cinematic collection of vignettes that Goldfrapp assembled for their debut record. The duo may not sound like this with their later material, but what they accomplished with Felt Mountain is worth beholding.
This album has a gloomy, noir vibe rife with a sensual undertone that you can't escape. For me it evokes a black & white crime drama with an unsolved murder that only a down on his luck PI can solve. Really enjoyable if your mood matches what the music is conveying. Today was just such a day for me.
This is the wrong Goldfrapp album
Ja
This was an interesting opener. Not sure what to expect This a moody album, I'm liking it I love the vocals, love the experimental instrumentation. Moody polka 😁 This feels like the soundtrack to someone's fever dream, in the best way possible It ended kind of abruptly. I didn't feel a satisfactory resolution
I LOVE Goldfrapp's more recent dancy releases. Critics and the general public have absolutely sat on these bangers of an album. Honestly, I had no idea Goldfrapp sounded like this early in their career. Heavily influenced by the sounds of John Barry's James Bond Scores and the Divas who belted out those iconic Bond themes, Felt Mountain is lush with orchestrations and the sexy, dark sounds of that British spy's early beginnings. It's moody and slow and you kinda have to be in the mood, but I absolutely loved it.
This album feels like it could be a soundtrack to an old Bond film, especially the first track. A good listen that makes you feel like you are in a swanky jazz club in the 40s. Highlights: "Lovely Head" and "Human"
Sounds nice but slightly, eh, pessimistic? Good for sad days, I guess.
I only knew strict machine from their other album- loved this, especially “Utopia”
Oh interesting, is that a rubber chicken or maybe a crow hooked up to a distortion pedal? This kind of sounds ahead of it's time. The audio engineering is pretty good for 2000. This is an album where I wouldn't want to listen to individual tracks, it is good as a whole, as an album. This was a nice experience and I could see it growing on me with repeated listens.
Beautifullllll album. I’m really in my Goldfrapp era right now so this may make me biased. The singing and the instrumentation yum.
overall enjoyed but that circus ahh song went on way too long
she gagged me... this was crazy and awesome. very different... such a cool vibe.... wow particularly loved "pilots", "utopia". DEFINITELY will listen again. an incredibly cohesive album too, like where the songs aren't the same but together they all form a unique sound & concept some parts I didnt enjoy - "oompah radar" (like, interesting conceptually, but thoroughly unenjoyable), and the end of "deer stop". that's why it's a 4 not a 5
Not what I expected.
Ngl, seeing "debut album...English electronic duo..." with an average score of 3 or less is really not reassuring. That being said, this was a very pleasant surprise. It's no Dummy (what is?), but it's some pretty fantastic trip hop that really does sound like a Bond theme. A strong 4/5. There's unfortunately some kinda dull bits holding it back from my rare 5/5.
Highly dissonant
Love this album. Much more interesting than Beth Orton. Also reminded me of the brilliant tv show Monkey Dust, which is a good thing
I love this album! :) so nice to listen to it again!
A fascinating mix of old school cabaret/jazz/pop and electronica, this is a really unique record. Sultry yet spaced out, this builds on a Portishead style (which I admittedly love). Not a ton of variation in the tunes but the overall vibe is one of a off-kilter, futuristic spy film.
Enjoyable mellow listen. Will likely listen again, even though there are very odd bits.
First time listen, and though it excellent. Only knew one Goldfrapp song before this (I bet you can't guess which one), so was pleased to hear their first LP. Will definitely listen again.
This was very interesting music. I feel like I need to give it another listen to absorb it all.
some dynamic variation in its pace and this could've been a 5/5
Wow, a whole album that sounds like the opening lead to a James Bond movie. Extra surprised to learn that she didn't actually get to make any James Bond lead! What a shame, would've work perfectly. I wouldn't exactly call this the type of music I listened to, but I really enjoyed the album. It was unlike anything we've had on this list before. And it certainly left you in a very specific emotional mood. Felt conceptually clean that way, which I really enjoyed. The downside with the album is that there is no song that I really feel stands out, or that I can listen to on repeat without getting tired. It's more the album as a whole that delivers (except for 'Oompa Radar' which was a bit too much circus themed). While I feel like this might be a strong 3, I've give loads of really crappy albums that I don't appreciate 3 stars. This one I actually enjoyed, so giving it a weak 4 to distinguish it from the lot.
I bet Beyonce is pissed she can't do this
Different and interesting
lush and mellow
Delightfully smooth. A slightly frothier Portishead.
Weird mashup of genres, lovely vocals, it mostly worked for me.
Goldfrapp is one of my favourite bands from this genre. However, I think that they have several better albums than this one (Supernature and Black Cherry at least). Felt Mountain has a few really good songs, but the last ones are a little more anonymous. The strongest features of the album is Alisson Goldfrapps haunting voice and the melancholic and slow paced melodies. Favourite songs: Utopia, Lovely Head and Human.
Really enjoyed this! I'll listen again. Influences by portishead and the like but still completely unique
Have loved this album since it came out. A 4.5
I love everything I’ve heard from Goldfrapp but hadn’t listened to an album from them. This is a great debut album - very downtempo with a lounge feel to it. Good production and a fun listen.
268/1001 Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ Felt Mountain feels like a slightly poppier, more ethereal version of a Portishead record and I absolutely love it. There are a couple of tracks that don't quite work for me, but a fantastic record nonetheless.
Goldfrapp's Will Gregory appeared on this list near the very beginning, as a session saxophonist on the Tears for Fears song "The Working Hour", which appeared on that band's album Songs From the Big Chair. well, 15 years later, here he is doing something completely different! well, not completely; Goldfrapp's music is certainly no less smooth and sophisticated. this duo, named for its other half Alison Goldfrapp, were late additions to the UK trip hop wave which was most ascendant in the 90s. there's a noir atmosphere in their work most apparent in the orchestral arrangements, and it's paired with some great electronics, drum programming, and a haunting lead vocal from Goldfrapp throughout. any of these songs could be a Bond theme and it wouldn't feel out of place. decent 7/10.
This was so cool and weird! Favorites include Deer Stop and Felt Mountain, which I swear is either familiar to something else or it was used in a show or movie or something and it’s driving me crazy that I can’t place it.
Þetta er bara solid plata. Mjög spes og næs. Gott sound og kvikmyndaleg tónlist.
I liked the electronic sounds of this album. Some songs were almost creepy, but in a good way, and it was fun to listen to. I’d never heard any of these songs before, but I’ve heard of Goldfrapp and heard a couple of their other songs, but I enjoyed this album.
Prvi komad ("Lovely Head") poznam & I love it.
Trippy and beautiful. See? I don’t hate all electronica
Good.
Heel cool!!
Creepy album cover but I liked the sound. I kind of felt like it was spooky, haunting 1930s French cabaret / nightclub vibes
Both ambient and striking. 3.5/5
Vage shit.
I really enjoyed the vibe of this album. It’s a cool weird vibe. The cabaret singer. It reminded of old school lounge singers. Yes Alison cut her teeth in trip hop but this album isn’t in that area. The music is a different vibe. I read people saying that portishead did it better but I would disagree to a certain point. I think Goldfrapp has a stronger voice with deeper characteristics while Beth’s voice is more unique. I don’t think this record is trying to be like anybody and for a debut it is a strong effort.
Unexpected. Inspirational, one of a kind that others have copied
Oooo I liked this a lot. It reminded me a lot of Portishead, especially the vocals, but it is still pretty different. Way more cinematic I would say, like something out of a James Bond movie at times, and pretty hounting at times. I enjoyed this way more than the other Goldfrapp album on this list, "Seventh Tree". This was way more dynamic I would say and better overall. The only track I didn't really like was Oompa Radar.
#61/1001 🇬🇧 A tremendous album. I listened to this loads back in the day. Musically, it plays like a film score with Allison Goldfrapp's ethereal vocals over the top. Its getting a 4 but i feel it was bettered with their later albums. Best tracks: Lovely Head, Human, Pilots, Utopia.
tiptop.
Took a few listens but it really grew on me, big fan.
Really interesting album, spanning a lot of different varieties. I enjoyed the otherworldly sounds on a lot of the tracks. Definitely worth another listen.
Really enjoyed how this tickled my brain
Very cool! Reminds me a bit of Portishead
This is sooo cool
7/10
My impressions of this album could not be further from those of the last Goldfrapp album on the list. This was a truly unique and engrossing experience that flirted along a deeply unsettling boundary from start to finish. I loved it. Not to mention, there were a number of familiar sound bytes throughout sampled in hip-hop. Chief among those being Human, which is eerie as fuck and made even eerier by Kanye West's treatment in TLOP. Always was a standout on that album and I love it all the same here. I don't have any song by song impressions, but I loved the atmosphere here -- in particular the closer. This is a solid to high 4 in my book. Gotta appreciate the cajones of any artist trying to pull off carnival/polka revival.
I got very dark vibes from this entire album. Oompah Radar sounded like a dark carnival song. And thought Horse Tears was tragically beautiful. Low 4.
Nice listening to
Bond theme song vibes
Greta vocals and very atmospheric, cinematic music. Maybe just a tad too much of the 1960's movie feel (the synth whistling) - something between a spaghetti Western and a Bond movie. I'm in a good mood and I just gave A-ha a three so this must be a four.
Second pretty weird album in a row, but I enjoyed this listen! Huge variety, very strange, really nice. 3.5/5
Was only familiar with the hits, has aged quite well with nice spacious production and some great instrumentation, nice synths in here and some cool brass. Alison Goldfrapp's voice is versatile and embodied, greatly atmospheric.
adorei, escutar mais goldfrapp
Interesting and fun. Didn't quite grab me enough to get the full five, but I was almost there.
I thought I already had songs by this artist on my liked songs list but I couldn't find any or anything on my music to check out list. It seems really familiar and I'll listen again.
4/5 obsessed
This is some weird shit, but I'm mostly enjoying it. Had to stop what I was doing at work halfway through Deer Stop to reassess what I was hearing, but decided I liked it. Not many albums have that effect.
It's impossible for me to give an unbiased review of anything Alison Goldfrapp does, as I simply adore hearing her voice on any & all electronic music. First with Röyksopp, then with Orbital (who previously appeared on this list), and now with her self-titled duo project. Admittedly, this debut album took me some time to really appreciate, as it is undoubtedly a departure from the style of electronic music I'm used to hearing with her vocals. It's evident from the get go that this project between Goldfrapp and Will Gregory is meant to be more of a stripped down approach to the electronic genre, and all aspects of the vocal and instrumental production are laid bare & on full display. The song styles offer a pleasant selection of jazz/cabaret, pop, and even a Cirque du Soleil cabaret feel on "Oompah Radar". While far from a perfect record, and one with a style that certainly won't be for everyone, it's a fun experiment of electronica that demonstrates (to this fan, at least) Alison's growth as a singer over the years. In case anyone bothers to read this - if you dig this album, check out Alison's collab work with Röyksopp on their albums 'Profound Mysteries I' and 'Profound Mysteries III' (There is also a 'II' album, but she didn't sing on that one). Simply masterful works in the electronic genre, IMO.
Great!
This Goldfrapp album is luscious and beautiful and some kind of 4 for me, I understand the criticisms but it hits a similar spot to Vespertine for me, which few things do
Really good, not had the time to give this the attention it deserves today so will definitely have to come back to this Hearing human come on and being the Kanye sample had me sitting up like Leo Highlights: lovely head, human, utopia 4 (but maybe higher on 2 more listens)
There is a quiet intensity to this album, through the first couple songs. I like the vibes, even if it's not something that I would seek out for myself. It sounds like what a modern detective/noir soundtrack would be like, dark, sultry, and mysterious. I don't really like the vocal effects added on "Deer Stop"; I think they get just a bit excessive and pull me out of my enjoyment of the album. Otherwise, I think this is a sneaky incredible album. I'm usually not an electronica fan, but this album never really overwhelms me with its produced instrumentation. It's very well crafted, musically. Favorite Song(s): Lovely Head
I knew nothing about this album or the group behind it prior to listening to this, and was thus very positively surprised and impressed by this, at least after first listen. The first few tracks in particular are really good. I'll have to give this a few more listens to see if it holds up. 4/5
calming, for walking
This reminded me of French '50s music with a pink panther twist. Highly enjoyable.
I had no idea what to expect going into this one, and it ended up being pretty cool. The first half especially surprised me with that 50s and 60s cabaret vibe. Human sounded like it could have been pulled straight out of an old James Bond film. Super slick and dramatic. And Oompah Radar gave me strong Eyes Wide Shut feeling. Creepy, stylish, and just a little unsettling. This album felt like a full mood more than a collection of songs, and it worked for me. Definitely one I enjoyed more than I expected.
Kuunneltu puoliunessa kovassa kuumeessa.
It's like Portishead minus Radiohead.
Really interesting stuff. Sounded like they could have done a theme to a bind movie in an alternate universe
Knowing them from their 2005 album "Supernature" this sounds, well, a lot more supernatural. Not quite as danceable as the aforementioned album or "Head First", but I liked it. It's dreamy, with orchestral and trip-hop-like arrangements that fit well with the singer's quicksilver, multi-octave vocals. The album's distinctive cinematic quality and almost soundtrack-like atmosphere were way ahead of their time, and together with the Weimar cabaret influence, give this album its own unique character. Brilliant discovery! 4/5
It's like Portishead but not quite as good Will I listen to again: 59%
4/5
Overall Rating - 3.67/5 (7.33/10). The whole album sounds like a catalog of James Bond themes. Which is a style choice, and one that I like.
Ég hlustaði á þetta í gamla daga og það var góð nostalgía í þessari hlustun. Mér finnst þetta einstaklega hugljúf söngrödd og lögin bara mjög góð. Gott að rifja upp Goldfrapp þannig að ég mun líklegast endurnýja kynnin í framhaldinu. Gott stöff.
Kind of has a 60s Noir film feel to it I can sometimes see some of this being kind of like mystery movie music. But with a little bit of an modern touch. I liked it pretty well. She's got a fantastic voice. (8.2) ★★★★
Sounding very 60s, but also very modern at the same time. Very cool! 4.5 stara
Goldfrapp is pretty cool. I heard their 2005 album, Supernature, which I liked, but this one was new to me. They mostly remind me of Portishead in that they combine electronic textures with a vintage sound. Alison has a cool, smokey voice that really works for this style. Highlights for me were "Lovely Head", "Pilots", and "Utopia". 4 stars.
This one is quirky, almost a bit eerie, but it did pull me into its vibe. Interesting find! Good for a low key mood.

cinematic and seductive
Etherial, floating, early chill but with more lyrics. I liked it, don’t know if I would aggressively seek it out as something to listen to. Title track was kinda meh. Maybe a touch too weird but it’s supposed to be that way.
I came into this completely cold, which is always fun, and I was hooked from the start. What an amazing piece of art! Not all great music is great art and not all artistic music is great, but “Felt Mountain” is both. From the opening refrains, Goldfrapp’s beautiful, sensual voice drew me into a dreamy world that demanded my full attention and really delivered once the seduction was complete. Calling this album electronica is a disservice. Beyond the aforementioned vocals, the instrumentation is more experimental (in a good way) and complex than what that genre typically delivers. The sounds of multiple instruments are layer together with an incredible production. Felt Mountain is an album that requires a really good set of earphones or speakers to be fully appreciated. After my first couple of listens, I started researching the album a bit and came across the following quote that summarizes this music perfectly, “An LSD-infused ‘Alice in the Looking Glass’ with a James Bond soundtrack.” I’m almost 200 albums into this project and this may have been my favorite completely new discovery so far. It is an album that will require a specific mood, but I will definitely be revisiting it in the future.
It's such an unusual album, with many strange and wonderful tracks, but I both admire it and I'm into it for the most part. There's lots of minor keys, strange sci-fi synths that punctuate the songs, and violins that sit underneath it all. There's really nice keyboards and soundscapes that run through it, but with lots of really good instrumental work over the top. It's like one big mood. Strange, and ethereal, and melancholic. I'm not always a fan of breathy vocals, but they're really evocative here, and really beautiful. Yes, some tracks have definite Bond overtones, with those big dramatic swells - but hey, I'm into that stuff! If you were being picky you might say it can be a bit much after a while, but if you're in the mood then this definitely hits.
Overall a really beautiful, well composed oddball art-pop / chamber pop album. The first couple of tracks are incredible. Her voice gave me the chills more than once. The production is top notch. If it wasn't for Oompah Radar and Horse Tears, this would be closer to a 5 for me. Oompah Radar sounded like circus music. But overall, a really strong unique album that I'd rank close to my other favorite art-pop / chamber pop type albums.
Man, I’ve been thinking about pausing whatever this is that I'm doing with listening to the 1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. I’m finding it hard to keep up with the pace of a new album every day and listening to it at least once or twice a day. The holiday season is coming up, so there’s a little more added to everyone’s plates, and truthfully, I just wasn’t hearing anything that really inspired me to continue. I’ve listened to a lot of good stuff, but I’ve not heard something that blew me away or really intrigued me lately. Then came Goldfrapp’s Felt Mountain. Goldfrapp is an electronic music duo, except they do things in a way that doesn’t seem electronic. Their debut album, Felt Mountain, sounds weird. It’s inspired by cabaret, pop, folk, and electronic music. It also sounds like it could have been made in the 1960s. I’d describe this album's music as cinematic. I can see how these songs could have been written for a movie. I’m not sure if you have a certain sound in your head for what a James Bond movie theme song sounds like, but I do, and this album is it. The lyrics are at times nonsensical, and at times, the singer, Allison Goldfrapp, has a digital effect on her voice that creates an unsettling wail or distortion that is just creepy. There’s something about a female singer’s vocals over the top of a mamba beat or a bed of strings. Sexy AF. You know me, I’m the same old g, and I dislike most electronic music, but Goldfrapp makes the bleeps and bloops work in between the actual music. I’m listening to the album again as I write this, and I can barely write because I just want to listen. I’m listening to the song Pilots, which has a nice orchestra playing with a shot of horns during the chorus, and then at points in the song, Allison Goldfrapp’s voice is encased in an electronic effect to produce an operatic type wail which sounds so beautiful and sad at the same time. Yes, speaking of sad, this album isn’t a shiny, happy album. It’s full of melancholia. You don’t feel fired up or ready to take on the day after hearing it. It’s, if not, a sad album, it’s definitely a chill album. I can’t write anymore about this album other than to say, I really wish you’d check it out. In a sea of mediocrity, this album set me right again and buoyed my spirit of adventure in listening to 1,001 albums.
Not sure how to describe this. Felt like crossing a 60s piano singer with a rhythmic, sci-fi/horror new age background. Dug it Human best song on here
Never listened to Goldfrapp, this was more Portishead-ish than I expected. Turns out I knew the song “Utopia.” More like a 3.5 for me but rounding up bc that one is great
Really good, almost a 5
Good early stuff.
Nothing I've experienced but im lowkey ascending, so hauntingly beautiful.
Mostly chill background music with one horrifying circus song.
This felt like some lounge music that would be playing in a David Lynch movie or something. Not something I'll always want to listen to, and it's definitely more about the vibes than any particular songs... Those vibes are pretty great though, this one feels singular.
Goldfrapp: really good at putting me to sleep. That's not a complaint, I have insomnia half the time. Still. Difficult to judge it on its merits when I'm drifting off, you know?
Det här var spännande! Lite Billie Holiday, lite Björk, lite electronica, lite jazz ... Blanda och rör om. En häftig ny bekantskap. På gränsen till en femma.
Basment
Gooooooodd
Loved it ! Goldfrapp somewhat came late to the trip-hop party, but they certainly brought something to the table in terms of inovation. While Alison Goldfrapp is not my favorite singer, she’s comfortable with all sorts of vocal experimentations, from trip-hop to ethereal / dream pop and post-rock. There’s a touch of Cocteau Twins here, a bit of CocoRosie, and even a splash of something like Sigur Ros. Will Gregory (who has worked with a ton of talented bands in the past) managed to create a unique atmosphere, experimenting with a wide range of samples and real instruments (props for using a theremin and a crank organ !). The production still feels a bit rough around the edges, but I really enjoyed the cinematic vibe and cabaret influences. I could absolutely imagine them doing an album (or a movie OST) with Ute Lemper. Can’t go as far as a 5* because a few songs still feel a bit unfinished, like they ran out of ideas before the end... But I’m definitely adding this to my rotation. It's a pity they later evolved towards a more synthpop style, something I'm not really fond of. 7/10
A truly great discovery! I really enjoyed listening to this album — so much that I feel like diving back into it and exploring more of this artist’s work. That alone makes it worth a solid 4 stars!
An old film
Never heard of Goldfrapp before, but this is such a beautiful album. The pop/orchestral music combined with the hypnotic vocals of Alison Goldenfrapp is just mesmerizing. There's really almost an other-worldly alien feel to it - especially in Deer Stop where they're using a weird alien voice that is slightly offputting. Oompah Radar and Horse Tears both give me vibes that i'm stuck in an abandoned haunted carnival; then other songs sound like the intro to a James Bond movie.
Enjoyable but mostly unremarkable trip hop. Has some cool moments though.
The best album of the 2000s I’ve discovered from this site. Baroque pop with synths that is eerie and beautiful. Some of it feels sci-fi, most of it feels spooky. There’s a polka performed on synths that would somehow please both Tom Waits and The Doors. I respect amazing performers who decide their first project is weird and spooky.
Contemplative. Good for a quiet dinner
I felt like I was in a James Bond dream
I really liked the sad piano and vocals. The vibe was great through the whole album, and the jazzy female vocals had a lot of intrigue in every song. I saved the album but I would only listen to it for character inspiration.
Super pleasant vibes
Great album Only skip was oopmah radar Very impressive spooky/eerie album that I’m typically not a fan of
I like the vibe on this. Human was easily the standout track for me.
Favorite tracks: Human, Lovely Head, Utopia I really can't decide if I love or hate this. Some songs seem like they belong on a James Bond soundtrack, others remind me of a dystopian future, and some sound like Ross Geller is on keyboard. Going with a higher rating simply because they really caught my attention and did a great job creating a unique sound! Also opening with that ominous whistling 👌🏼 excellent attention grabber
I liked it well enough. Like Trip Hop, but mellow(er). It would be good background, chilling music. Doesn't require actively listening. It does tend to all run together though. I'd say I'll listen to this again, but it's doesn't really call out to me. So, if I don't put it on a playlist now, I may never run across it again. After listening, I got some random songs and a few others by Goldfrapp and they were a little more energetic and good. May have to dig into the catalog. I'm going to give it a 4 even though it's between a 3 and a 4. There's really nothing wrong with any of it. It's just not super-grabby. But you know, a time and place for everything!
# Playlist Track - Utopia # Notes - A highly experimental album that gets a lot of things right. - The spacey-jazzy-atmosphere is cool and involving but a few tracks are a bit too slow. - Worth the listen, but Goldfrapp's latter albums are a bit more fun.
Really interesting techno jazz something very unique you dont see often. Kind of similar to Portishead in a way.
Really liked it, down memory lane
James Bond in space
I always like Goldfrapp more than I think i will.
This is what I always expected Portishead would sound like based on reading reviews of Dummy! Where the latter ends up sounding a bit conventional, if cold, this one's exactly the kind of retrofuturist album I really wanted to hear.
Really good and on my field
Oh, this album has some beautiful music in it. I've always felt that electronic music is the only music to actually elicit emotion out of my autistic ass for some reason. It does sort of lose me in the middle, when things slow down and get a little more offbeat, but it picks itself up and I love where it goes. Shout out to "Paper Bag" and "Utopia".
And once again I fell for it. I mistook Goldfrapp for another band with a similar name. So my expectations of the album were low. I'd seen the cover before, probably heard the CD once, but had no concrete memory of the music. When I heard the first few notes, I realized the mistake I mentioned at the beginning. I really liked this album. I like the style and think the sound is cool. The album won't be one of my top albums, but it comes close. 4/5
Clearly her best work. Beautiful and mesmerizing!
Delightful. Would like to listen again drinking wine and relaxing of an evening. Beautifully arranged. Trippy vocals.
60s James Bond!
This was great. Strange, atmospheric, confident. Alright, I'm a Goldfrapp fan.
Reminder not to trust the overall ratings on this site
No me esperaba canciones tan buenas.
Beautiful voice. Very soothing music. Surprisingly good.
Lyder meget forud for dusin tid
Godt fund!
first listen absolutely cinematic and i loved it
Where has this album been my whole life ??? I’m so thankful that I got into the 1001 albums list because I get to discover so many great stuff I never heard of. This one really moved me.
Favorite Track: Lovely Head
I had never heard of Goldfrapp before, but I really enjoyed this album! Alison Goldfrapp's vocals are fantastic, and the electronic elements in the tracks add a unique touch. This is exactly the kind of surprise I hope to find in this list of albums. It's experimental, mysterious, and interesting. The only track that didn’t quite hit the mark for me was "Oompa Radar," which I would describe as a haunted rollercoaster tycoon soundtrack.
Envolvente...
Classic
The first half of this album is trip-hop at its finest, with interesting dark cabaret inflections. The second half loses some steam and seems a bit too unfocused. Still, a very enjoyable album.
This was a pleasant surprise! Super weird and fun to listen to
Intense and hip, like a James Bond theme song, but also downright weird. This album is downright outstanding!
I liked the incorporation of the operatic elements and the composition was great but I prefer their more energetic stuff
Very Europhic. Interesting. Well put together
Good to listen to at night when you are winding down.
Cool album from a group I didn't know I knew already. One of those wonders with a few hits, but didn't know the name of the artist. I appreciate the production and her voice quite a bit.
4.6
Unique sound and totally experimental. Interesting instrumentals and incredible vocals. Not my cup of tea but I can appreciate it being one of a kind.
Your lovely head
Like the ghost of Jessica Rabbit post-suicide.
....
I'll be honest, I listened to this when I was feeling tired and this put me to sleep. Its so soothing haha
The Good: a mountain made of Felt! The Bad: Felt can start chafing… The Ugly: Or rug-burning, depending on what you are doing with the felt… This was a very curious listen… because I thought I was going to be indifferent, and then I found myself being engaged… At times, I felt like I was at a circus. At times, I felt like I was just sitting in a room… I hated it. I liked it… Not in any specified order… This leaves me with no other choice than to give the album 4*, as I know I will want to listen to it again at some point...
Nice.
Its kinda mad to me that this is Goldfrapp's debut based on the rest of their career. This one's got all kinda of Jazz and downtempo stuff, and some off beat weirdness. Also Nick Batt from Sonic State played bass synth on it.
took a few listens to get into it but god do I love abit of weird girl music
Another surprise for sure. Not quite perfect with tracks deer stop and oompah radar a miss for me, but otherwise a very cool vibe overall. 4.5
Total haunted Portishead vibes. Elegant, eerie, and immersive
8/10 pretty good, but nothing too profound
Very ominous sounding Billie Eilish style Holy shit “Freestyle 4” reference Got a cool vibe
lovely head chli morricone und 90s lo fi gmischt huere geeeil. findi haaammer moody und cool. ah fuck es het nöd gspecheret aber paper bag isch sehr schön, stricher super tasty und ihri stimm isch butter. human het mega groove und macht sehr cooli glitchy sache. seehr sehr cool. die hoch stimm uf pilots isch glaub afoch sie das isch jo chraaank wie klar sie döt obe isch. wow wow. super schön. die tüfe blöser sind au maad geil. deer stop het au wieder die höchene drin wo crazy sind. felt mountain sehr coole minimalistische groove mit dem bass all 2 täkt. suuuper geil wo d claps chömed und au wies oh i text uschunt. oompah radar sochli goofy-ominös. cool? utopia slappt no. polo und pan hend nöd viel erfunde. nöd erfunt.
trip hop but not as good as Portishead
7/10 me when strings
This album was so weird and experimental but also so comforting and inviting at the same time. I at first thought it was a bit too chill to earn a 4, but some of the later tracks really took me on a journey. I especially enjoyed the whistling, vocals, and occasional harpsichord. Favorite Track: Oompah Radar
nice :) portishead type beat i wish es wär mehr musik manchmal
Bless elektronische Musik!! Bisschen wie portishead Best Song: Utopia
How did they not do a James Bond theme? Like a lot of trip-hop, it feels highly derivative in the best possible way, like an expertly filled plate at the buffet that makes your tablemates go "Ooooh, I didn't see the dumplings!". Alison Goldfrapp is a true songbird, the production is smart and in just the right part of her shadow. Great Theremin usage. This was a delightful surprise.
This is nice, like a mix of trip-hop and cabaret. Alison Goldfrapp has a lovely voice that occasionally recalls Portishead's Beth Gibbons (especially on tracks like "Pilots") and has great range. It's spooky and enchanting and makes me want to check out more of their albums.
I'm surprised to see this on here. It's anachronisms probably sound cheesy — "cheugy", even — to anyone who wasn't just the right age in the year 2000. But damnit I like this kinda stuff. I prefer Black Cherry to Felt Mountain, and Koop to Goldfrapp, but I'll frequently cue up albums from this niche; it fits a particular mood.
Eerie, sometimes freaking weird, very cinematic. Grew on me after 2 listening sessions. Love it
Liked this album a lot! it was smooth and not doing too much. Felt really smooth and had some songs that got sampled or at least also sampled it hahaha. All along a great Experience and a good revisit in the future! (4.0/5.0)
Don't follow 'ilconfo', he's a music taliban, this is a good album
Chill.Good. Good chill.
Dreamy
This scratched an itch I didn’t know was there. Beautiful album
7/10. Great sound. Got a tad dull but very good album.
Keine alltägliche Scheibe. Kein Mainstream.
Slinky, cool. Perfect early 2000’s electronic sound.
A long-time favourite. Dreamy and beautiful.
Really enjoyed this! Reminded me of a James Bond soundtrack meets 60s Euro jazz.
Eerie magical, its a great album that takes electronica to somewhere more earthy. Also was heavily played in monkey dust so reminds me of that.
Great evolution of the trip hop sound, cool latecomer to that already cool party
I enjoyed this more than I wanted to add it so schmoooshy. But them 90s chillout orchestral backings get me every time.
