Reviews (page 4 of 13)

Still as groundbreaking and fresh as the day it was released. A modern masterpiece.

One of the all time greats

5 stars.

Have always known of its existence, but never properly sat down and listened. It's truly a marvel.

Trance-like, hypnotic, relaxing, laid back. An album that I had heard before but upon recent, multiple listens, it definitely grew on me and I realize its significance. It's like listening to the Chill station on Sirius XM, which actually may not exist without this. Classified as instrumental hip-hop. Stoner hip-hop could also fit. Built over a two-year period almost entirely out of samples from funk classics and bad horror soundtracks.

Sick drums, funky beat, hypnotic mix

Ako baš moram najdraže izabrat to bi bile: Building Steam With a Grain of Salt, Stem/Long Stem i Midnight in a Perfect World.

I'm a sucker for dark, creeping, atonal beats and this has them in abundance. Loved it thoroughly.

He really nailed the pacing and atmosphere of this. The book review is corrwct in saying it instantly sounds familiar. Love it.

Gets boring at times, but I like it. It sounds like something that could inspire some of the genres that I really like today. Mostly electronic x-core-esque, but also the hip-hop of some of the samples. It has a vibe, not a strong one, but one. "Number Song" slaps hard! "Changeling" reminds me of the loading music for Mario Kart Wii Online for some reason. The darker songs almost have a sewerslvt kinda vibe. Love it. "Midnight In A Perfect World" is pretty bad actually. If it'd lose the vocals it'd be great. A 4 or a 5, this is awesome. About 8.5/10

Wonderful stuff

Kuuntelin tätä joskus yläasteella/lukiossa. Building Steam on musta ainakin ollu aina ihan tajuttoman kova biisi. Nyt kolahti kovaa myös esim. Stem.

A classic hip-hop / trip-hop album from the nineties: great samples, great atmosphere and very coherent. I listened to it again and still like it very much.

This is a lot of nice beats and I think it’s full of material that’s been sampled a lot. “Before we get started” right in the first song. I really liked listening to this. Favorites: building steam with a grain of salt, changeling, stem/long stem. I read the Wikipedia and it’s an album full of vinyl samples layered into new material

perfect

Me mama.

Amazing album, one of my favourites. Why don't I own this on vinyl yet

Big beats. Good background music that frequently demands your attention. Very relaxing, could smoke to this. Favorite tracks: "Midnight in a Perfect World", "Changeling / Transmission", "Building Steam With a Grain of Salt"

This is still really good! 4 or 5 , that's the question. I think the Zeitgeist for me takes it to 5

Awesome chill beats

Oh yeah this one's a favourite. Had this on vinyl for a few years. Stands as a giant in this style of music. Loved revisiting it! 5/5

4.7 + Love this record almost as much as “Donuts” by JDilla, another legendary DJ (RIP). Sophisticated, evocative.

Very Nice. Great drums. Love the samples. First listen score : 10/10

this is actually pretty good. I like it. Favorite tracks: Building steam with a grain of salt, Stem/Long Stem

track 1 - sets up the album great, nearly all samples track 2 - starting track 2 sampling one word of a sample from track one very meta, great example of how a sampler is an instrument. This album and this song got me through college, great song to throw on while studying/programming. "The music's coming through me" track 3 - starts off with a song that has breakdown but doesn't even sample that part but choses a second sample to use for it. oldschool rap sound. track 4 - super mellow transmision 1 - always loved that film sample track 5 - never was one of my favourites from the album, sneaky kraftwerk sample hidden in there. track 6 - don't remember this song, what is this sample haha track 7 - banger. love the film sample at the end continuation of previous one. The drums are perfect over the strings/organ. Organs are later fleshed out in organ donor song, Giorgio Moroder - Tears. Great transition into the 2 songs this essentially is. Great version of this with heat sample that came out later. The sample at the end is a comedy sketch but the way it is played makes it sound like a madman from a film or a one man show or something. transmission 2 - love that musical sample, super chill then into another film sample about transmission from aliens. track 8 - alien sample previously into a chewie sample. Dj shadows wife talking, scratches, semi nonsensical lyrics around wookie sounds and screams and crossfader sounds. track 9 - simple sample but perfect mix/additions to not be too boring another great study/programming track. track 10 - cool little continuation with different keys after. "Why Hip Hop Sucks In ’96" = "It's the money" track 11 - jarring and chill at the same time somehow. That is gift of gab sampled at the end and the Gab Remix of this is excellent also. That version expands further on this song as being about the Doomsday Clock at the likely / upcoming end of humanity. track 12 - another odd alien film sample over banger drums and sparing bass, bird chirping and guitar. very long. track 13 - radio/transmissions at the start set the mood for the eerie/melancholic outro. The drum samples on this album really help make it. transmission 3 - final / "repeat" alien sample, always loved those samples and this one as it lowers / fades out with more information being given and the twin peaks sample is an odd ending to an album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpbWz7QvJAo - most samples

- mix of old school hip hop electronic instrumental vibes - each track blends right in with the next - lots of sampling - enjoy the journey it takes you on; feels a bit like a movie soundtrack in that regard rather than lofi/trip-hop style music

Me recuerda a cuando descubrí a dj shadow, brutal

listened to while walking through the Edinburgh meadows at 11pm in the summer. What an incredibly calming yet still groovable album. I adore this.

i like this very much Cool Beats?? really cool beats

Utterly unmissable. Seminal. Timeless.

Just an immense album. Instrumental hip-hop but more than that. Just listen to it. BT: Building Steam With a Grain of Salt, The Number Song, What Does Your Soul Look Like - Pt.4

An extra one for nostalgia

Excellent

Many good beats

Already have

Fantastic production! Heard DJ Shadows on a lot of features, but this is the first album I've listened to.

One of the greatest. I love this, but am partial to private press

Nice beats. I enjoyed this album for the most part. Must-listen #370

Such an amazing way of utilizing samples and tracks from other music to transform them into something new. It’s a shame most remixes and samples today feel cheap and lack passion. I have a lot more respect and hope we can get more like this album

An album almost entirely made from samples. Rare samples, from vinyl. As a piece of art, a 5. As music itself, a really coherent vision but maybe more of a 3. Let’s average at 4.

First Listen: Sep 16 2024 any album that samples bjork is a classic in my eyes. crazy immersive instrumental hip-hop, some of the best sampling i've heard since dilla. goat shit

90s hip hop, electronica. Debut. Samples of vinyl records. Cool, different approach to a hip-hop album.

Really liked the vibes of this, felt very immersive

Not much to say about this. Not my usual thing so I find it hard to judge. What I do know is I enjoyed chilling out listening to this. It's a carefully curated mix of diverse styles creating an atmospheric and moody hip hop album. So eclectic It even manages to include some metal-esque blast beats. It's one of the more original things I've heard doing this list. I'd listen again. 4/5

I love sample albums/plunderphonics. From Girl Talk, to DJ Earworm, to the Avalanches. This is by for the most sophisticated and understated album of the genre I've heard. It is excellent, eclectic and beautiful. It would have got a five if it had a little bit more humour and whimsy in there, but that would probably have changed the album.

A nice chill album with enough complexity to keep me from getting sleepy.

Good! Hadn’t listened to him until now. Enjoyed the layers.

Found this album fascinating, never heard it before and I never would have known it was made in the way it was. Very clever, but also very listenable.

This was great background music to my post-Socceroos wfh. Stem/Long Stem in particular reminded me of the days where I would listen to lo-fi tracks over the top of police scanner transmissions while I was studying (on reflection, a very weird thing to do)

Yeah good background stuff

Midnight in a perfect world indeed. Almost a perfect record. It sounds better when listened to in the middle of the night.

So damn good. Can't imagine the work that went into finding the samples and putting it all together. Trippy at time and hip hoppy at times. Awesome sounds, super intricate.

seminal instrumental hip hop album

An impressive feat of crate-digging and some awesome beats here. Creates such a cool atmosphere. Building Steam is SUCH a good song with the piano sample and just the vibe it generates. Occasionally instrumental albums can get a little repetitive for me but this is a classic.

8/10 - This is a really good album. The orchestration on every song is ethereal Fav Tracks: Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt, Stem / Long Stem - Medley Heard before? ---–- ❌ Saved a Song? ----- ✅ Saved Album? --–-- ✅ Will Listen Again? -- ✅

Really enjoyed this. I need to get into this genre more.

Very baller and moody and skillful yes yes yes Highlights: "Building Steam with a Grain of Salt", "Changeling", "Midnight in a Perfect World"

So good. I hadn't listen to DJ shadow in St just 15 years. This was a lovely reminder of how great he is

Pre Listen: Never heard of the guy. Based on the title, artist name, and album cover, guessing it'll be rap? No expectations, outside of that. Notable Tracks: Building Steam With a Grain of Salt - Definitely not the genre I was expecting, but I'm ok with that! I hope it stays like this. Number Song - Recognized the "Louder, Louder!" sample used, that was also used in a previous album I enjoyed, by Public Enemy. Nice. Stem/Long Stem - My favorite track on the album. It's just sort of a nice sampler from everything else here. Midnight In A Perfect World - I didn't hate this song by any means, but it was my least favorite on the album. The vocal samples just weren't it for me. Transmission 1, 2, 3 - I liked these little segments. I've heard similar things to this in more modern albums I enjoy, so it was surprising to hear stuff like this here. Post Listen: I had to listen to this album front-to-back like 3 times to really solidify my opinion on it. I kept bouncing between a 3, 4, 5, it was all so different and unexpected. This album had some of the smoothest, cleanest, thumping rhythms and beats I've heard on here yet. The sample work was overall pretty damn good, it did have some goofy shit here and there, akin to something you might find in a YouTube Poop. I really enjoyed all the songs for the most part, though they did start to blend together. I had to keep going back to find the titles of the songs I liked most, it was hard to tell them apart. The album goes on for longer than I'd like, but each track individually feels right, generally. Really I just couldn't believe this album came out in 1996. The style of the sound feels so much more modern, I swear I've heard some of the songs here have influence in tons of modern tracks I adore. After much deliberation, 4/5.

Interesting!

When the Solesides/Quannum crew were doing their thing I was good friends with a massive hip hip head, and he was obsessed with all the Quannum artists. It was an infectious passion, given the quality of the music. DJ Shadow being foundational makes Endtroducing.... one of of the very very few DJ album I ever picked up on wax. Now, how does it hold up? The style is so tied to that time and place for me. I would say still good. But I kept wanting Gift of Gab or Latyrx to start spitting some smooth bars. A bit of a long hour of music.

finally listened to this one... it really is good!!!

Seeing the other reviews on this one, I expected to be disappointed. Was pleasantly surprised, especially knowing what went into making this album happen. Having an ear for what sounds good, picking through all the samples, knowing which beats work in tandem with each other, and combining all that to transform these records into something entirely unique is an art form in itself that deserves appreciation. This album is an atmospheric and melancholic collage of sound that left me wanting more. Would definitely revisit this one!

507/1089 - Great variety of tracks but not enough variation inside the tracks for my taste.

Pretty sure I've listened to this before but very solid plunderphonics, great to study/work to

Is it electronica-inflected hip-hop or hip-hop-inflected electronica? I’d probably say the latter. But it’s smart and interesting. Even jazzy.

For some reason I haven’t properly listened to this, despite having friends at university who were into it, and I’m almost certain I’ve listened to it in their company but it’s a long time ago. It’s incredibly well crafted and right up my street, although my prevailing thought while listening was that I could expect a 5 star album but it falls slightly short of that sky high expectation. It’s very long and my schedule meant I ended up listening in 2 sittings, however, conversely, the longer it went on, the more I enjoyed it (or perhaps I was in a better mood for it in the 2nd sitting). In any case, I’ll give it the time it deserves in future.

It's an interesting approach to experimental music. It's like Hip-hop, Experimental music, and Electronic music all in one. It's Hip-hop but without rapping almost. An interesting album that's also really good!

i enjoyed this. very cool

Sometimes an album has the perfect artwork. The cover of “Endtroducing” visually represents what you're about to experience so absolutely perfectly, it's no wonder it's become so iconic. We went to a talk in my hometown a few years ago with Brian Cross, or B+ as he's known professionally, the Irish photographer responsible for this brilliant cover image. It was shot in Rare Records in California, but we’ve all been in a record shop just like it. A place where hip hop kids, club DJs, rock and indie guitar dudes all knock elbows with each other sifting through rows of dusty vinyl as the owner’s disgruntled cat looks on. This was where DJ Shadow spent so much of his time crate-digging to find interesting material that he could sample. This is apparently the first album that was built entirely from samples. Old forgotten records are given a second life, mined for moments of obscure funk, jazz, soul, rock, spoken word, and drum breaks. “Endtroducing” shares its DNA with hip-hop: breaks, turntables, dusty drums, looping, sampling. But the mood is more cinematic, melancholic, and abstract. Shadow turns crate-digging into composition. “The Number Song” is a track that stands out to me. Those huge beats get my attention, but as with everything else on this album, the samples are so unexpected. Like, it shouldn't work so well, but it does. “Midnight in a Perfect World” is another track that I keep coming back to. It sounds like it exists in a space somewhere between Portishead and Massive Attack. And, of course, there's the absolute mind-blowing vision to set the organ of Giorgio Moroder’s “Tears” to big beats in the song “Organ Donor”. It's not just a cut-and-paste collection of samples and loops. “Endtroducing” is record shop crate-digging turned into fully formed songs that feel atmospheric and emotionally rich.

revolutionized sample-based music

4.5/5. This is one of those albums that makes me really appreciate sampling as an art form. DJ Shadow flips so many bits and pieces from songs and movies and other things to create an hour of fantastic, dense and atmospheric instrumental hip-hop. And despite all of the sources being pulled from it’s still extremely cohesive. Great album overall that’s brimming with creativity.

Great 90s hip hop instrumentals. It’s jazzy, chill, juxtaposed with modern samples.

Smooth. Love the artistry is takes to mix beats like this. Soothing enough accompany paperwork.

I dabble in trip hop sometimes, so knew "Building Steam With a Grain of Salt" and "Midnight In A Perfect World" going in, but also enjoyed "Number Song" and "Organ Donor"

I saw this was hip hop/sampling and after Avalanches, thought I was in for a big disappointment. After 30 seconds, I realized this is what sampling is SUPPOSED to sound like. Never heard DJ Shadow before and did not even realize instrumental hip-hop was a thing. Artistry here is great and the first song (Building Steam...) was a treat.

probably the best instrumental hip hop album ever. crazy sampling and bangers. 9/10. first listen tracklist ranking: 1. What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt. 1/Transmission 3 2. Stem/Long Stem/Transmission 2 3. What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt. 4 4. Changeling/Transmission 1 5. Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain 6. Organ Donor 7. Midnight In A Perfect World 8. Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt 9. Mutual Slump 10. The Number Song 11. Untitled 12. Best Foot Forward 13. Why Hip-Hop Sucks In '96

Great! Didn’t know what to expect, but eclectic

Sound-y. Right away you feel like this is the medium of a man who can't express himself otherwise. Into it.

first listen sick prod

Nice palate cleanser for the albums lately. Sometimes a long dj hype session is just what the Dr ordered

Interesting album made even more interesting when you learn it won a Guinness world record for first album completely made of samples

Incredible sampling, can see why UK hip-hop scene has exemplary taste of samples and mixing-all done on one device Almost a triple album with the kind of layers he has brought in

Hard to complain with this one. Insane sampling

Great record. Each track is unique in its own way, with each also being quite an interesting listen Favourite Track(s): Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt, Midnight In A Perfect World Least Favourite Track(s): Stem/Long Stem, Mutual Slump

Definitely better than study music. I'm adding this t my regular rotation. 4/5

Took this thing on a walk and I was pleasantly surprized. Pretty amazing what you can do with just a sampler and little else.

Maybe lacks a bit of texture that I like from the best trip-hop actions, and suffers a little from being the first out the gate, and the sounds become more normal place, but still an incredibly engrossing and atmospheric album

It has a handmade, ramshackle quality that sets it apart from other tapes of lo-fi beats to study/relax to

Been a long time since I listened to this album all the way through. It really is worth doing and focusing on. Takes me back to my time in the US which is when I first heard this I think.

Not a genre I even knew existed, yet several of the tracks were hauntingly familiar. Very good, but felt more like background music or maybe a soundtrack than something I want to listen to actively.

i am inside the computer

Sehr entspanntes Ding.

Today’s album is primarily going to be enjoyed on flight AA1929. The intro caught my attention right away. Second track already sounds dope. It sounds familiar but I can’t say for sure that I’ve ever heard it … so we have another artist who has a big influence …? I thought I had varied music tastes but two days in I’m realizing I could’ve been doing better. This percussion fucking slaps. MEMORY UNLOCKED - my good childhood friend used bits and pieces of some of these songs on remixes he would make in high school. Oh my god, the nostalgia this just brought me. This is peak ADHD brain juice. It’s both chill and relaxing, but interesting. It scratches that racing thoughts itch. This is 100% going into my regular music rotation. Organ Donor’s into is totally sick!!

I usually do not listen to albums without some sort of consistent vocal part, whether that be singing or rapping, etc. I've been trying to expand my horizons when it comes to this, and Endtroducing helped me appreciate music like this even more. Endtroducing is not just an album, it is an experience, and one I quite enjoyec

Never heard of this album, but I'm always down for a good hiphop album. I'm wondering because it's just DJ Shadow if it'll be mostly instrumental. Nowadays, you'll see a DJ put out a single, but has several major rappers on the track doing a verse. Real drums?? If only I could rap, this is a great album to do so on. Definitely feels like something a "snob" would listen to. Don't get me wrong, it's great so far. I love an instrumental, especially hiphop fusion. It does give off "white, NPR listener". I've had NPR on my radio plenty, so that can be self inflicted. So far "Organ Donor" is the coolest track. Really stands out. Speaks to my inner goth.

1. Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt 2. Midnight In A Perfect World 3. Stem/Long Stem hm: Napalm Brain / Scatter Brain, Organ Donor

Super influential album, especially back in the day. I remember listening to DJ Shadow on my Dell DJ (digital jukebox, lol). I think the Beastie Boys heavily influenced DJ Shadow and he was a major influence on today's high-sample mixers like Girl Talk.

Wasn’t looking forward to this to be honest, but I found it a surprisingly food listen.

This was really cool, especially knowing that it's all made from vinyl samples. I do prefer hip-hop with rapping I think and something like techno if it's just sounds, but this was still good. Funny how some albums are great for studying and others are distracting. Jimi Hendrix yesterday was good. So is Lou Reed. This wasn't but I got used to it because it makes the work so much more enjoyable. Contrary to expectations, I preferred it through even a small bluetooth speaker to headphones. Maybe that was just the times of day or maybe it's a music for chilling out to, for having on while you lounge about the living room or sit in the sun with friends. Top track: Mutual Slump, I really liked the little voice clips in that one

nice instrumental hip-hop beats, put some some somgs in my playlist even.

This album was surprisingly good, wasn't too hopeful or knew what to expect for a 'Instrumental Hip Hop' album. It's literally what the name says, but it's a lot more than that. This album features heavy sampling and distorting and twisting those samples around and creating art from it, it's like the hip-hop equivalent of Since I Left You (even though the former released before the latter album.) It's quite moody and nocturnal, which makes it quite soothing and relaxing. The album cover is pretty great as well. The song "Building Steam With A Grain of Salt" is pure bliss and perfection, it's one of those songs that spring up to me every now and then that reminds me that music is so great, to the point that it makes living and existing totally worth it. I definitely see myself returning to this one. Highlight Song/s: "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt" and "Midnight In A Perfect World"

Loads of sick samples in this. Nicely put together. Fun listen.

A genre defining album. I bought this when it came out. Saw him live as well at Brixton academy and the show was so good.

Dope beats and objectively good music, but not really something I'd revisit.

Super cool and sick

Only 2 tracks in, but I'm finding myself enjoying this far more than expected. The cover inspired little confidence, but it's something completely different. Hope the rest of the album continues to impress. The rest of the album was good. I think this is a surprising 4, I could see myself putting this on on occasion.

At times this album felt like an acquired taste. Second listen improved things and learning the backstory of the vinyl sampling and limited equipment made the generation all the more impressive. Feels like DJ Shadow was a precursor to current artists like Fred Again… who are proving very popular currently. Not perfect but enjoyable enough of the time.

best foot 4ward - cool intro bswagos - pretty good, abit repetitive so far but still good. oo very cool drum remix thingy at uh abt 2:50, i like it alot. the drums keep being cool dude i fucking luv drums the number song - already LUV the intro omg ts is so cool. ooo brass ok. very cool song changeling - oo... like the start... it got better when the drums came in, then it got better, n then.. BASS. fucking luv the bassline, i luv bass, omfg. w8 is this in 7/4?? holy shit thats so cool i luv peculiar time signatures. it js got better n better transmission1 - tf r they sayin wdysllp4 - already luv the bassline untitled - water they talkin abt s/ls-m - cool.. harp? oo klinky sounds.. sounds mysteriously mystical.. WOA ok now were gettin sum percussion.. n it got fast now woa thats cool i like that mutual slump - well thats 1 way 2 start a song. like it tho organ donor - ooo cool melody OH nownthey switched it up thats cool.. bit quiet w out any other instruments tho.. sounds like sum shit from undertale (aka good) i had 2 much pie crust in my mouth n didnt chew thuroly b4 swallowin so it scratched the top of my throat n now it hurts n im bloody pissed off n the music doesnt sound as good bc of that wdysllp1bsr - oo sax luv 2 hear it very nice album! didnt know id enjoy hiphoppy sampling stuff this much but alas

It's amazing how someone can come out with such a brilliant piece of art and never come close to that again. To be fair, Endtroducing... does feel like catching lightning in a bottle, especially when you listen to the hilariously inferior re-imagined version that came out 20 years later. Anyhow, this is a wonderful album that truly deserves all the praise it gets. It's just perfectly constructed and its atmosphere is unmatched. Favourite track: Building Steam With a Grain of Salt

On the lowks I kinda loved it. Weird and cool sounding, a sprinkle of pretentious, overall just a bunch of pretty cool, enjoyable songs with some thought behind them. What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt. 1 (Blue Sky Revisit) best song 7.2/10

I came to this a bit after it was released, probably around the 2000s when i was exploring more left-field hip-hop and whilst it's rooted in that genre it also transcends it, moving into a more ambient and even trip-hop territory. Made entirely from samples, it's an incredible feat and incredibly cohesive. I remember watching a documentary on hip hop that focussed on this and that DJ Shadow used to spend hours in the basement of this record shop pulling out random records, and sometimes the owner would forget he was there! I probably don't listen to this as much as I should, it's a real mood and vibe and I always love it when I do.

Cool beats

Excelente! Muy buenos tracks

absolutely

probably a 3.5 but i did think that the fact nearly this entire album is just record samples is extremely cool so i've bumped it up

Highlights: Building Steam With A Grain of Salt, What Does Your Soul Look Like pt 4. In a nutshell: the end is only the beginning. People who say that this album is repetitive and boring didn't give this a fair go. Try one more time. Pick one of my highlight tracks and pay attention. See how the samples are introduced. How they build and change the direction of the track. How it starts, how it ends. It takes skill to find the right sample and fit it in the best spot to keep the flow going, just like when a drummer picks up the pace or a lead guitarist starts a solo. You need to time it right. It's less commercial than Fatboy Slim's work on Better Living Through Chemistry (released a week after Endtroducing.....), probably above par with The Dust Brothers (Beastie Boys Paul's Boutique, Beck's Odelay and Midnite Vultures) in complexity. Even if this isn't your kind of music, you gotta give credit where it's due. Overall: 8/10

What a fun time! This is very fancy cocktail bar trying to be cool vibes, except really really good with total bangers.

Very good album sounds like MTV downtown movie ngl

Derek James Shadow was merely a talentless young lad with a dream until he met Len Houmous. The rest as they say is history. 4.4 10/16 Mutual Slump

You really get the sense of someone at play on this album. There's something life affirming about that.

Incredibly impactful, fantastic beats, but not my favorite to put on

Favorite Track: Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt

8/10 - What a cool concept and what a piece of art. I think the run is a little long but it’s a super unique concept.

One of the best albums to study or work alongside. A masterpiece in the art of sampling. Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt is one of my favorite songs of all time. 8/10

I really liked it! I would listen to it again. Good study album.

Not bad but not my style

Never listened to this before, always been a bit put off, but I was pleasantly surprised.a lot more mellow than I was expecting, a good Sunday night listen

YES! Not listened to this for ages and very glad to have a reason to. Don’t think I quite realised its significance and skill in being pretty much solely samples when I first heard it, but glad to be informed before this listen. Man, that second track feels so nostalgic and legendary! Brought me right back to first listening 20+ years ago. Some amazing tracks, some kinda okay enough, and some filler but generally a very good package and a significant album for many reasons too. 4*

Dig it. I'd listen to that again.

Enjoyed this way more than I expected to. Great music to have on while doing stuff and always felt myself saying "wow I'm really digging this vibe". Very fun album, did not think something like this existed in 1996.

Not my usual genre, but very interesting, have been relistening a good bit

What a surprising album, what a mix of sounds and samples, what a vibe, what a record. Loved it all throughout, the chill songs made you dream, and it all flows very well. Very recommended!

Banger

This was cool. It seems genre-ranging too. Cool breaks and beats.

Funny! Spooky! Groovy! Vibey!

A very meaningful listen for me, as I never quite recognised the art of sampling until today. Very much liked this, and it showed me the strengths of this medium when indulged properly. Final transmission shook me. Favourite tracks: "Building Steam with a Grain of Salt", "Changeling", "What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt. 1"

Listened to the whole thing once 10+ years ago (downloaded to my PC 29/04/2015, yeah I'm an OG) Really good, like the older brother of Since I Left You that plays the drums too loud through the wall when it's trying to get to sleep. Love hearing Twin Peaks getting sampled in one of the latter tracks too. But hard to give 5* as it's not something I'd love to put on anytime and doesn't give you much to latch onto melodically, which by contrast I feel like SILY has in spades while doing a similar sort of thing

Real good vibe to vibe to whilst vibe coding. Apart from maybe when he starts freaking on the drums or synths which did kinda throw me out of the zone a bit when they happened 4

Killing demons in DOOM 64 to this was unique

I have fond memories of picking up a random CD version of this from the Air Force base barracks in Albuquerque. Good stuff. Always loved this record, though seldom revisited.

Sampling can change the world

The name DJ Shadow probably suggests this is going to be much more hip-hop than it ends up being; in fact, I'd put this closer to the jazz category than anything else. I enjoyed this, and I love so much music that this definitely influenced - groups like Dirty Art Club or The Jazzual Suspects are a few of my regular listens. That said, I don't have any specific nostalgia for this record that would compel a 5 star rating here. I'd buy a vinyl copy if I came across it in a dusty bin, but wouldn't go out of my way.

A sampling masterclass. Without this I'm not sure we have Donuts or even the foundations of vaporwave (i.e. Eccojams). While it's not one of my all-time favorite hip-hop records, I'd definitely call it an essential and I'm glad to see it here in the book.

First impression was that it was just more ambient electronica garbage, but quickly realized what it actually was: a masterpiece of sample mixing. Really cool and interesting. It's nice to find an album that's the opposite of most, where it doesn't really work as background, but definitely rewards closer attention.

This album, other than highlighting the insane levels that sampling can take you to, really showcases the flexibility of the hip-hop genre. I think most would hear that name and immediately assume rapping of some kind, but DJ Shadow proves that even lacking that, if the instrumentals are good enough, it's well worth listening to.

pretty good OG instrumental hip hop with sampling

Something I would listen to again.

A classic and really impressive on a technical level.

Can't go wrong with a good mix like this. Great, ambient, unique sounds and groovy samples

Ya know, not what I was expecting. Light on the hip-hop, more focus on jazz and electronica. Not a lot of song structure, but not unpleasant and maybe even worth another listen. The backstory to some of these tracks would definitely be interesting to me. Better than three, better than 3 1/2, so I'm going to go 4 for the pleasant surprise.

This album is a perfect example of why I'm doing this and making myself listen to albums I normally wouldn't listen to. When this came up, I had never heard of it and didn't think I'd ever heard of any of the songs. And with a description that said it was an "instrumental hip hop work composed almost entirely of samples from vinyl records", I went in thinking it was going to be good background music for me at work this afternoon, but I wasn't going to like it. Then the second song came on. I listened to "Building Steam With a Grain of Salt" hundreds of times. It was a constant staple on my iPod and my car stereo. I can't figure out how I came across it, but I love this song and probably haven't heard it in 30 years. Needless to say, this album will now be back in my regular playlist. It's an absolutely genius album!

This is really good. Feels very ambient and is on a different side of hip-hop from anything I’ve ever heard. Long songs with very few words is quite unique. Biggest complaints, the album cover while not bad definitely isn’t pushing any boundaries and it’s a really long album that feels like I can’t really add any of the songs to my rotation. Good in the album outside it doesn’t work but I think that’s just because I don’t really have like a playlist this would fit in to be honest.

Favorite track(s): What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 4), Stem/Long Stem, Midnight in a Perfect World, What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1 - Blue Sky Revisit)

I went in completely blind and it was incredible as a first listen. Very chill and kind of chaotic at the same time in the best way.

4/5 I love how playful and downright artistic this was. It's the perfect mix of sounds to keep you interested and not bored. I loved this album, it was a great listen.

Enjoyable ambient/techno hip-hop stuff. Great mood setter for a long drive. Really enjoyed this.

Really loved it--hypnotic breakbeats that inspired dreams of my own Las Vegas Heist movie.

This album surprised me, an inauspicious start and the name of the artist had me expecting a difficult hour. But the creativity quickly became apparent and kept this fresh while having a strong beat that keeps you locked in. Showcases what you can do when not just relying on repetition and drops, this will definitely get some repeat listens when the time calls for it.

When I saw a nineties album by someone called DJ Shadow, I was skeptical. It turns out my prejudice was unfounded and I really enjoyed it. I like the repetitive, rhythmic nature of sampled music like this, as long as it contains enough variety and builds into something interesting. This whole album felt considered to the point of obsessive. What I love about this type of thing is when you can hear how much time an artist has invested in finding the best sounding samples and munging them together into something completely new. It was the sort of album where soaking up the general vibe was as important as any individual track. I found myself transported into a zen-like state.

This is like hip hop jazz and it works pretty well. Nice and chill but enough novelty to keep it interesting. Added a few tracks to my chill playlist.

This was cool, and scratched an itch I didn't know I had.

I have this on Vinyl and also already rated at 4.5/5.0 on RYM, but I reckon here leaning more towards 4 stars, still not sure. Today is quite busy so not enough time to properly re-listen again

Instrumental hip hop, trip hop, plunderphonics, sampledelia.

Interesting genre. Mostly instrumental hiphop made up by samples. For me it’s a background type of music I can enjoy while working or focusing on something else primarily. The song «Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt» has already been on such a playlist for a long time. That’s also easily the best song on the album.

Fun. Loved "Organ Donor."

2/18/26. Really really enjoyed the beats. 8.5/10

J'ai vraiment kiffé !

Impeccable vibes.

Wonderful collection of beats. Varied, challenging, bright, and beautiful. Favorite track: Building Steam With a Grain of Salt

Very enjoyable sample based hip-hop/trip-hop. Big fan of all the keyboard and string sounds used throughout, like "Organ Donor" building off a really cool Farfisa organ taken from one of Giorgio Moroder's albums. 8.5/10

8.5/10 An album made entirely from samples that still sounds this consistent is seriously impressive. I just wish it was a bit shorter.

Sounds of my youth. Still such an incredible turntablist and record

This must’ve blown minds in the 90s

Listened to this a dozen times over the years but maybe I was listening wrong bc this time it made sense. Sudden tempo changes. Time signature variations. The unexpected arrival of new cool sounds.

Knowing this entire album is nothing but sampled vinyl makes it extremely impressive. Just thinking that the artist had to listen to all these albums to find which parts to sample then to compile them in a way that's palpable is a feat within itself. This is like looking at a collage and realizing that every single piece of fabric, magazine, photo, and newspaper piece was placed there intentionally by hand. Incredible technical skill showcased in this album - and it bumps. Great D&B sections, fantastic old-school hip-hop sections, and just incredible vibes all around. What a gem. 8/10

As a kid born in the 90s and raised in a household filled with a variety of genres of music, this album sounds super nostalgic. My brain feels scattered and tickled in just the right, most relaxing way.

Obviously a huge instrumental hip hop classic, very atmospheric and very rewarding.

Good stuff!

Wonderful music, varied, moody and groooooovy. Despite being one hour, it played in the blink of an eye.

Great Songs: The Number Song, Organ Donor, Napalm Brain / Scatter Brain (Medley) Good Songs: Best Foot Forward, Building Steam With a Grain of Salt, Changeling, What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt. 4, Untitled, Stem / Long Stem (Medley), Mutual Slump, Why Hip-Hop Sucks in '96, Midnight in a Perfect World, What Does Your Soul Look Like, Pt. 1 (Blue Sky Revisit), Transmission 3 Mid Songs: Transmission 1, Transmission 2 Bad Songs:

Sick ass beats! Great for background music. 4/5

Taking little pieces of others creations from vinyl and reworking it into something ambient/dreamy over 2 years? This is the perfect example of the type of albums that should be on this list. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant. It demands a spot. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.

Not a bad album, but I would have enjoyed it more with a bit more vocals. Probably why I like Portishead, Tricky, Massive Attack and Unkle (particularly the Unkle album DJ Shadow was on, Psyence Fiction) At times the music also falls prey to the drum programing - with Shadow making parts so fast and loud that the sound just becomes muddy. That seems a lot of negative for an album I actually did like quite a bit, just not as much as I thought I would. 3 1/2 stars.

I actually enjoyed this way more than I thought I would ... love the experimental stuff and this one grooves!

This is it - this is perfect music to work to. This is the type of thing you hear in a coffee shop and Shazam it because you know its a sample, but is well-arranged and will probably lead down a rabbit hole to other cool original material. Really nice musical collage, easy on the ears without being boring or distracting, sounds at times like the type of beats I can see MF Doom rapping over. This kind of music is so much better to me to have while working or doing an activity than electronic music, which has no dynamic range. 4 stars for sure.

Easy listening

I like the album art. And the name. This is sick. Cool beats. Breakbeats, scratching, neat samples. I dig it. It feel like nice light 90s nostalgia. I love the drum tones so much they sound so good. Stem/Long Stem is unhinged lol wtf.

- It's great; I didn't listen to it when it first came out, but my friends did and loved it. It was clearly groundbreaking at the time. - I enjoy the trip hop/breaks feel to it, and all the sample usage is really cool and well done, especially since it was just made with records + samplers. - That said, I do find it a little disjointed at times, so I don't really get that invested in the (evolution of each) song, itself. - The album also feels a bit too long. - Classic album cover. - It's probably a 3.5 for me, but I'm going to round up on this one, maybe just for the Twin Peaks sample.

Good but no lyricism. Don’t know enough classic hip hop to understand how influential it is

Enjoyed listening to it on the bus

Went in ready to hate this but it wasn't at all what I expected! Really liked Stem / Long stem medley with the extracts from Heat.

Top shelf pick. Sample based brilliance. One of those albums that's fun listening straight or picking apart every sound on every track. Equally rewarding.

DJ Shadow – Endtroducing..... On Day 41, the "3/5 Equilibrium" has finally been broken by a masterclass in instrumental chemistry. Endtroducing..... is a "triumphant" body of work that proves you don't need a rapper to deliver a "conscious" and "thought-provoking" experience. The technical skill involved in building these tracks entirely from samples is "on Mars," hitting that "immaculate" production standard I look for. "Building Steam with a Grain of Salt" and "The Number Song" are standout highlights—perfectly executed pieces of "vintage" soul and "tuff" rhythms that maintain their momentum from start to finish. This is a record with genuine lasting power vibe that earns its spot in my personal rotation. A perfect 4/5.

Changeling Stem/Long Stem Midnight in a Perfect World Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain This at least 4 1/2! Mmmm between 4 or 5... I'm struggling!

Awesome

This is great stuff

Favorite Tracks: Building Steam / Changeling / What Does Your Soul Look Like / Organ Donor / Midnight in a Perfect World Rating: 4.3 This is an album I already know well, and enjoy...along with a bunch of other trip-hop and related genres, low-fi etc. One of the defining albums for "sampling as an art" and a foundational work that influenced a ton of artists afterwards.

fabelaktig, rett i Avalanches og Lemon Jelly land, plunderphonics for dayzzz

Quite liked this but not a love at first listen. Very taken with moody electronica so I’m sure I’ll revisit sooner rather than later.

A nice fun vibe for my Mario gaming

What a coincidence, i just listened to this last week

Classic old school hip hop drums at the start. The album really evolved over time. At some points of this album I thought I'd give it a two as it started to sound repetitive but at other points I thought about giving it a four for it's uniqueness but I'll give it a 4 because I might want to revisit this one again.

Already heard it was gud

Boring

Some good long instrumentals

Really interesting work. Feels like a monumentally important album in the history of sampling.

Sweet lofi jams

I like this! Not my normal cup of tea, but some groovy beats, and a range of sounds that keep it interesting.

Will listen to again. I know a lot of the songs but had no idea it was from this album.

Didn't know what to expect when I first got this album. Having never listened to an instrumental hip hop album I was worried that I was going to miss the vocals. Happy to say that I did not and that this album exceeded my expectations. Its a great, chill album that is perfect for an early morning commute and the kind of album you can easily put on in the background at a small get together.

Very fun listen, glad this is on the list.

The vibes off this album are immaculate. Can just put this on and feel. I'm always impressed with quality sampling technique.

4.0 stars I LOVED this album back in the day. seemed revolutionary for it's time. it's still a very good/cool album, it just didn't have the impact I thought it would on relisten. maybe because I've heard it so many times. if this was a first listen I probably would've been blown away. Favorite track: Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt

One of my favourite Hip hop albums. The way this is made just with sampling is mind blowing. Incredible

It may be 30 years since this was a revelation, but luckily Endtroducing doesn’t rely on that to earn its place in history. It’s just a masterclass in cinematic downtempo with grooves that just won’t quit. It may have been a blueprint for many that followed both good and bad, and it was maybe a little over-hyped (The Jimi Hendrix of the sampler? Come on!) but that all fades away with the mists of time. It’s Midnight in a Perfect World and this album still sounds like perfect soundtrack. Strong 4.

DJ albums are really not my thing. That said if you're gonna listen to one this is pretty damn good. I was getting Beastie vibes but without the Boys. Loved how the samples felt so artfully placed. This is another good coffee shop album, cool enough to get heads bobbing and nondescript enough not to piss people off. Overall even though I probably won’t go back this album is solid AF.

Sounds like my brain feels. I like it

DJ Shadow's use of samples is so entrancing. Every splice fits in perfectly into his work. Favorite(s): What Does Your Soul Look Like; Midnight in a Perfect World; Napalm Brain/Scatter Brain.

Fun mix of genres

I had never heard of this before. It was a lovely groove. I know it is entirely samples but they are woven together so well. I loved the album.

Awesome samples stitched together by the legend.

This is probably the most out-there thing on the list so far. It probably deserves another listen just to appreciate all the vibes. Very like ambient hip-hop at a lot of points and not very poppy at all. I sorta vibed with it though.

Very experimental and werid at first but as I listened through the more and more I liked it. It’s a masterpiece using samples to convey a story of how mere samples can become blossoms of art, using this eerie album as an example.

never heard of this one before today but i like it!!

Gonna sit on the fence for this one as I didn't give it the time. Can hear good things in it, but probably not my thing. EDIT: oh, I was wrong. Relistened to this early this morning, and it gives the same vibes as I get from Portishead, Massive Attack, Boards of Canada etc. All great and really well put together.

This album was such an enjoyable listen!! I love when artists use fun sampling and this is just a great example of that! Learning about DJ Shadow’s background and process was so fun too!

One of those albums that I desperately want to give a 5, but its just not quite there. The little interludes kinda break up the vibe for me, and some of the music is just slightly dated to me ears. But its still a hell of a vibe with its breakbeat/trip hop leanings. I particularly love the tracks Building Steam With A Grain of Salt amd Changeling. Probably one of the best (if not the best) records in the plunderphonics genre. I slightly prefer The Caretaker's Everywhere at the End of Time, but Endtroducing..... is a landmark in music.

Already knew it well. I love it. It's mind-blowing to think how it was made back in the 90s. "it is happening again" always makes my blood run cold. a perfect soundtrack for a night drive

Building steam with a grain of salt

3.5 (genre birth - Trip Hop) (63:23, 13 tracks (4 skits), 1996, debut) trip hop Trip-hop sampling record - hard to classify. Hypnotic in a trance way, strong hip hop beats. This album birthed trip-hop which became Chill Lofi. In 1996 it took a master to produce this masterpiece pre-editing tools, pre-internet samples everywhere. What took DJ Shadow a year now takes A.I. 1.482 seconds (which is sad.) It's easy to overlook the genius of this album. People criticize as it's not his music but you put this together - it sampling at it's best. What he's creating sounds nothing like anything he took it from. NO ONE TELLS A BAKER - it's just butter, flour, sugar, eggs, and milk (vanilla, spices, salt, and baking powder.)

Cool instrumental/experimental/abstract hip hop. Sit back and chill

this was so cool but made me kinda scared

Best songs: Building Steam with a Grain of Salt, The Number Song, Stem/Long Stem - Melody, Midnight in a Perfect World Somewhere between instrumental hip hop and trip hop. Very subversive album - I'm not sure what to think of it because it doesn't sound like one thing or another. This is why I started this project. A good album to listen to in the morning.

Napalm is a good track

Starts off like Beastie Boys, slowly evolves into Tricky/Portishead. Some great samples and beats. A joy to listen.

Strange but strangely compelling. I would listen again in a trance

I'm over 800 albums in. Hip hop and Electronica are my least favorite genres. But this album is incredible. Or at least incredibly interesting, considering it's almost entirely samples. So far there are probably over 300 albums that I doubt you really need to hear before you die, but I'm glad I listened to this one.

Great and essential Instrumental Hip Hop. Good for chilling out and getting lost in.

Innovative samples and complex soundscapes that somehow feels a bit dated at times but still incredibly impactful

Surprisingly good to have on as background music. Low key enough to not be distracting, but enjoyable enough to not just fade away and ignore completely. I like it but it’s also something I’ll probably never listen to again

This was great.. covers a lot of ground, and is always interesting.

I really enjoyed this album, love this kinda of music. A bit more on the artsy side of the genre but still great

I enjoyed this. Early trip hop? Will listen again. I’m in a good mood so went generous with the rating.

Thought this album was solid. Reminded me of Massive Attack and Morcheeba, a little repetitive at some point but very moody 7/10

Pretty cool. I was kind of listening while I did other stuff, but some beats definitely stood out to me. I'm not the biggest fan of pure instrumental hip hop beats like this but it was nice background music.

A pleasant surprise. Relaxing vibe to work to and feels ahead of its time.

A surprise hit. Not really my style of music but I enjoyed every song on your album.

Great, I'll be listening to this again.

Pretty decent electonic album

Sampling is a form of art, like collage: it's just a tool after all, and like every tool if you don't know how to use it it's completely useless. This is an amazing album in its semplicity, a wonderful first listen that for sure won't be the last.

I really enjoyed this. Some songs were pretty unique, far as an instrumental mixing album goes. I was feeling a four but realistically a 3.5 is more accurate. I’ll stick with the four though. This was fun

Endtrancing.

I’ve under appreciated instrumental sampling for far too long. It’s impressive how a collage of samples can create something so unique and otherworldly. Listening to “Midnight in a Perfect World” during a late drive home from a show was definitely the right vibe. I see myself getting deep into this record for a while

General chill, funky vibe. Sounds like it’s playing in a natural wine bar in Brooklyn.

My mum passed away last week and I had 4 or 5 rubbish albums to get thru. Not really a fan of this genre, but this one just seemed to be what I needed and it helped put my soul at ease.

80/100.

Very interesting after listening to it. It's one I've known about for years but have never actually listened. It's on lots of beat ever albums lists for a reason. It's worth a listen for sure

I really enjoyed this album. It's chill, lounge like vibe makes it a great listen. I get why people think this is boring or why it's compared to elevator / background music, but for me this style really hits me in the right way. It's calming but still engaging and honestly makes me long for grabbing this vinyl and curling up in front of a fire to enjoy it. I'm new to DJ shadow and Endtroducing just got me hooked!

Geile Neuentdeckung

Dont know this album. Rap, hip hop, edm? Either way, first for any of those so far in this album generator. Exciting! Samples, scratching, good start. Interesting beat from in 2nd track, cut together well to achieve a bit of swing. Was this an influence on groups like Unkle? Can hear an Unkle feel to this second track. Can feel a beasties influence in this. Travk 3 and its all samples so far. No rapping over or anything, all lyrical content sampled, drums sampled, all sampled. Im guessing the whole alb at this stage. Track 6 and tht tracks. Laid back, great grooves, cleaver cut up of beats and breaks. I like it. Some choice samples from jazz, r&b and fuck knows where, effects put on to make something completly different, like the bassy vocal samples on track 6, a few shputs over the top, laid back groove and its almost Martin Denny like exotica. Track 11 and you get Inagadadavida (or however its spelled) and if its not its trying to be.

The bass, the drums, the atmosphere... You need to be in the right mood but it's a great listen.

I didn't know this album and I was surprisingly delighted by it! Love the cover art, and the album's title. I don't know a ton about hip-hop, but it's clear to me that this must have been pretty important to a lot of musicians who listened to it. And it was just cool and nice to have on!

Iconic

Fuckin great, an album that deserves to be listened to from start to finish. MIDNIGHT!

the number song

Great beats and sampling. Loved the themeing. Not sure I would call this rap, but, I guess it's as close as you could get.

One of the best study/work albums. 8/10

Smooth and groovy hip-hop beats. Nothing to not like

Remarkable that the album is fully made of samples, and it's really good, maybe not something you'd listen to often, but definitely good for chill background music.
