Kind of fire?
Remember we had an album from this guy before that I didn’t think anything special of. This was an upgrade though. Maybe on the cheesy side, but I enjoyed the slower songs. ’My Winding Wheel’ stood out as particularly good. The songs I liked the least were the more uptempo ones, like ’Shakedown on 9th Street’ for example. Granted, it would be quite boring with only ballads, but still. Think this is a weak 4 from me as far as country goes. Haven’t heard any country album on this list so far that I liked as much as this I think.
It's a solid record.
Not much of a country guy but this album might adjust that. Good tunes.
- bangin guitar - not to be a John Mayer fan but I feel like this guy’s up there - delightfully mournful - twang - less country less 80s slower bruce springsteen? - man sometimes nothin hits like a simple harmony - huge fan of woman that rains. “sound as an old engineer” is funny - my kind of album; I think it also just matches my particular vibe today
This album is much better than I honestly like to admit. I didn't care for the other Ryan Adams album I've had so far, but this one is pretty diverse in its sounds and is pretty good for a "modern" singer songwriter (I know this already 25 years old). The opening trio is really good, with my favorite probably being Amy. Its subdued and lets the softness do all the work. Come Pick Me Up is also really good, the banjo is nice to hear as that instrument is definitely underrepresented 600 albums in.
I don’t know anything about Ryan Adams as a person. Society has essentially erased him. In fact, this is the first time I’m hearing about him, which is a shame, because this album is really good. It’s got all the folksy goodness of Bob Dylan, but sung by a smooth, sultry voice. The run from Amy to Damn Sam was awesome. At the end it was a bit long and meandering, though.
Reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska".
I liked it, exactly the kind of chill album I needed for my morning. If I could, I’d give it 4.5 stars.
This was lovely. Like drinking bourbon on a hot evening under a ceiling fan on a southern porch. It isn't Country exactly, but closest to that genre. Come Pick Me Up is especially enjoyable, but I am a sucker for a harp. I suspect Mr. Adams will fall victim to low ratings because of the struggle to separate the art from the artist. I'm going with rating the music, I guess.
Really good one!
Liked it better than I expected. Some real "not bad" moments.
Surprised at how much I enjoyed this - I initially judged an album by its cover like a fool but thought there were some excellent songs and lyricism in here. Call Me On Your Way Home and Oh My Sweet Carolina were my faves
What an incredibly sweet album, particularly enjoyed the discussion in track 1
Pretty good. Was always out off because of wonderwall but he seems like a decent lad
51 minutes felt like 10, i was gonna say none of the tracks particularly stood out but then the middle of the album hits, stays good till the end. 8/10
I'm probably prejudiced against him. On first listen this album is inoffensive.
Too bad Ryan Adams is such a creep.
Kivaa rauhallista kantria. Akustinen kitara ja laulu pääosassa. Eikä ole Bryan Adams. Parhaat: Oh My Sweet Carolina, Why Do They Leave, In My Time of Need
Really exquisite songwriting, some excellent jangly tunes, and some somber ones. The album tapers a bit at the end and ends a bit sour, but is no less impactful as a folksy exposure. Speaking of exposure…. Ryan really sucks as a person and a performer. Serious talent. Serious issues.
To Be Young
Wasn't expecting this but I liked it. Very Bob Dylan/Bruce Springsteen. First song sounded straight outta highway 61
You're immediately hearing echoes of Gram Parsons, then Emmylou turns up on backing vocals. He may be an arse but his music is good.
This was nice 3.5 stars
Dude may be a bit of a prick but he writes a good tune
круто
Really really solid 4. Great country
Was hoping to hate it based on the fact that he is a sex pest. I annoyingly quite liked it
Reminds me of Blue Rodeo (Worth another listen) To Be Young My Winding Wheel Oh My Sweet Carolina Bartering Lines Call Me In Your Way Back Home Come Pick Me Up Why Do They Leave? Sweet Lil' Gal
4-
To Be Young and My Winding Wheel set a really solid scene for this album. Oh My Sweet Carolina would be a good song to try and sing. Same with Why Do They Leave? Its maybe a little too silky and melancholic on the back end for me to give it 5 stars but holy moly a great album.
A good album by a deeply shitty person
Beautiful alt country album
Hes a little dylan, and little costello, but pretty cool.
I wish I didn't like it as much as I do.
Know what's really terrible? The inclusion of a Morrisey argument as a track and this much harmonica.
An interesting listen. I wasn’t sure what to expect having only heard the name but not the music. I ended up having an enjoyable experience with this album although I didn’t listen to the lyrics too intently. I didn’t think I would like it as much as I did.
Good dinner music
This surprised me. I thought I knew Ryan Adams but this was much better and well composed than I had expected.
Enjoyed a lot
Strong Dylan vibes at times. Overall a strong album with a lot of good tracks. Very enjoyable.
good but not the tops
Verrassend goed. Zet hem nog een paar keer op.
Great lyrics and solo display. will give a second listen. Good mid-energy album to have on as it spans a few genres and doesn't get boring or repetitive.
This is the kind of country music I really like. This album sounds like something much older.
A really great album. I feel like it could grow on me over time.
This is a breath of fresh air. I hadn't ever heard this album before, but it's really good. Maybe not something that's going to withstand the test of time in 50 years, but it's just a good solid listen.
I really liked this. Ryan Adams is one of those artists I've never really engaged with. It's a good, consistent album.
I thought this was a beautiful and mellow sounding. I wasn't able to pay close attention to the lyrics but was really digging the vibe. I'll be wanting to return to this again though I think.
first listen lot of nice variety, strong songwriter
If I could rate this entire album based on the song \"To Be Young\" it would be five stars. There are some other great tracks on here, but they don't share the same sentiment or energy of that track. That being said, this is the album that led me to purchase several other Ryan Adams releases and Whiskeytown releases.
Quite enjoyed this
Started out really strong, and I was like “Yeah!” But got a bit bored in the middle and I was like “Oh…” But by the end I was like “🌝”
Great alt country and yes, suede head is on Bona drag and Viva hate
Judging the album, and not the person, I did really enjoy this.
This continuation of Dylan has the benefit of having some masterful musicians on staff (Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch… wow!). And “in my time of need” is definitely just repackaged “if I needed you” by TVZ. At any rate, this album plays well and holds up well. It clearly had a huge influence on things we’re still hearing today from Jason Isbell for example. It would be a 5 but I can’t seem to ignore the self-righteous person lingering behind the tracks. Who starts an album airing out a petty argument with their producer?
Surprised how much I liked it. I was expecting it to be pretty boring country, and sure it's got anything crazy, but it's so damn nice to listen to.
This is great. I get not liking the person, but the music is excellent.
Hold on, so Ryan Adams wrote the Old School song!!! That was unexpected. To Be Young and the amazing Oh My Sweet Carolina are the standouts on a very good album filled with broken heart folk-rock. 8.3/10
Mood dependent, but I enjoyed it yesterday
hated his wonderwall cover. i enjoyed this album quite a lot more than i expected though. reminds me a bit of damien rice but less pop/accessible. unfortunately googled him and saw he's a really awful person. even without that some of these songs go on for too long or have sounds that just don't work. Ranking it as a 3.5/4 for the music, but I think this is pretty inessential as there's similar sounding things that are better and not made by someone grim
Contains a number of great songs and despite a couple of mishits (when you're young you get sad and you get high etc) still my favourite RA album. score in 2000: 8/10 score in 2024: 8/10
A very tender and heartfelt album. Nice blend of softer ballads and some country rock flair. Some of the songs I felt had a little too much going on particularly with the harmonica, but I feel like I would have enjoyed it more if I just liked country music more. All in all pretty good. Top tracks: Oh My Sweet Carolina, Bartering Lines, Sweet Lil' Gal (23rd/1st)
Album 533 of 1001 Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker (2000) Rating : 4 / 5 I like this album. Gives a few Dylan vibes along the way. Seems he's had some personal stuff that make people hate him but that is new to me. I like the tunes.
Enjoyed more than I fought I would
Not bad.
Surprisingly loved this!
I used to like this album a lot, but now it reminds me of someone I really hate AND ryan adams is also a pos. It's still good I just can't enjoy it the same way
Ryan Adams is most definitely a twat, but this album is great even if he bites Dylan excessively. Shoutout Dave Rawlings for (co)writing the best track on the album. Fuck you, Ryan Adams. Take your 4/5 and pound sand.
Despite how I feel about Ryan Adams as a person and an artist, this is an objectively good singer-songwriter record. He's a clever lyricist. He plays on words, homages in interesting ways and almost always cuts deep. I like almost every song on this record. Something that I value is varied albums with lots of unique sounds, this definitely isn't that. But something else that I love is really clear, competent genre music with good songs and good songwriting. And that's exactly what this is. He set out to make a really good country folk songwriter album and that's exactly what this is.
A fantastic mid-tempo singer/songwriter album.
A pretty good album, I liked My Winding Wheel, Bartering Lines and Shakedown on 9th Street.
It ispretty perfect that when Ryan Adams, all around shitty person, recorded his first album that the first track would be a spoken word argument about another all-around shitty person, Morrissey. The album is still pretty good though.
Indie rock Graham Parsons, even down to the Emmylou Harris collaboration. Its so easy to be tedious and dull in this folksy acoustic introspective singer songwriter country genre, and there are a couple of plodding duds on this album that fall into the trap, but the handful of really incredible songs, the wide open heartbroken songwriting, the spare, spacious very pretty arrangements, classic Americana instrumentation and the vital tender thrilling performances make this an alt country great.
Классный альбом, есть сильные песни, очень хорошо подходят для медленных танцев. Воодушевляет. Новая версия Дилана. Охото сесть в мустанг, ехать по шоссе проезжая штаты,
This started really strong but petered out a little for me, perhaps a bit too slow and brooding. The duet was lovely. Definite Dylan and Beck vibes.
Enjoyable listen. A few emotional songs about love leaving that I wasn’t expecting from the album after the opening
Fantastic album.
Phenomenal songwriting, Amy is one of my all time faves. It is kinda dark but I like that
This album was insanely good but like hm not sure I can give it 5 since he is who he is.
I really like this album. It’s too bad he turned out to be a turd of a person.
I don’t hate it - My wife 7/10
Really enjoyed this.
Don't get me wrong, Ryan Adams is a vile, vile piece of shit. Unfortunately, and to my surprise, this album is right up my alley? I actually think I've heard a lot of this album before. I think in college friends would play it in their car, because a lot of these songs are sounding vaguely familiar to me.
Although largely overshadowed by his more famous, Canadian homonym, I was aware of Ryan Adams before this album, but I had no idea what style of music he sings. I enjoyed this album. Very relaxing, accessible. I played it while packing up my room, after learning I was returning to my school, so perhaps I was in a great state of mind. The opening track is a fun, pop-y reworking of Dylan's Maggie's Farm or Subterranean Homesick Blues. At other times he sounds like John Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls. Perhaps my views have been manipulated by a colleague, but I have heard this is his best. If others are worse, I'm uncertain how much stage time I'll give other albums before I give him the hook. This album, however, will certainly get more spins.
It's got the rawness of a debut release, which is what's great about this album. Maybe it was the drugs and alcohol. I guess if you can include Michael Jackson is this list, then maybe you can also filter out the things Mr. Adams is accused of.
Ok
Enjoyed this one a lot
Love me some Ryan adams
Pretty basic ‘white man with a guitar’ music, but slightly better than most
Really liked 'Oh My Sweet Carolina' and 'Sweet Little Gal' with the piano. Relaxing album.
So good, if slightly too lugubrious at times, and slightly inclined to longeurs. Who else wrote songs as good as “Come Pick Me Up” and “To Be Young"? The latter is just a stunning debut annoucnements, side 1, track 1 as Cusack character in High Fidelity would say. These were one's personal fave songs of the decade, to be sure. Often gorgeous, frequently heartbreaking. One hates that he was a baddie to Phoebe Bridgers, but the musical output has been at such a high standard for so long.
Once again rating this on the music not the artist. Great alt country album, not quite as good as Whiskeytown at this point. He starts to expand a little from the alt country formula on a few songs too, as he would continue to do.
This is an example having to separate the art from the artist. Be sure he is a documented a$$hole. But I sure do like this record as much as it pains me to state. I’ll never listen to it again unless it’s for free because I hate that he gets .0000012 cent for my streaming it for this.
Better then i was expecting.
I like this one more than Gold, by quite a bit.
This guy was huge, wasn't he? I managed to ignore him at the time, but now the dust has settled it's not bad; shiny, druggy folk pop that could have been recorded in 1975.
Love the two opening songs. Really digging this album. I knew two of the songs on here already. The rest of these are really good.
I kind of wanted to hate this but it's really good
Another "hey, how did I not listen to this then?" good rock, young love, angry at the man. John Butler Trio in the same race.
7/10 very vibey album that was fairly solid
Alt country classic
I really like "Oh My Sweet Carolina". The album has a very smooth sound. It was very relaxing while listening to it during work.
So, I have been going into this venture trying to be as objective as possible. This means for me that if I don’t know an artist I have not looked them up or read anything about before listening to the album. I don’t know what others are doing but it has been an interesting approach for me. Ryan Adams is one of those unknowns for me. I have to say, it was great. Country, rock-a-billy, and a touch of angsty Indy to make it modern sounding. He had a good range of songs, which kept it interesting. While I did get a little bit bored with some of the slower songs it was overall a very nice listen. Highlights: “Bartering Lines” and “Shakedown on 9th Street”
First Ryan album I bought. Thought it was great. Had another couple then started going downhill to prolific and just releasing everything. This album has some great songs
7/10 I really wanted to love this, but there’s just something that kinda drags this album down it’s still super enjoyable but not as good as I would hope
A North Carolina native!
I’d never listened before and now I’m hooked. Somewhere in the Venn diagram of Bob Dylan but with diction, a little bit of Tom Petty, a little Neil Young, a fine degree of heart and soul is this wonderment. Glad this got served up!
Great listen, can hear his inspiration in some modern day music.
I'm feeling very conflicted about enjoying this guy's music. Knowing what I know now, it really puts a damper on the whole experience.
I’ve listened to Ryan Adam’s before but never this album. I like many of the songs on the album. He must have a had a really rough breakup. He’s a little bitter. I think this is an album I need to listen to again. I think this one will really grow on me.
Enjoyed the album. Someone I would listen to again. Not the happiest of albums though.
I thought I didn't like Ryan Adams but I think I was wrong
Good fun and a gorgeous record full of American stylings and good writing. Was always a bit ambivalent about Ryan Adams, but at least his debut is definitely a winner.
I remember hearing about this artist back in the day, but never listened to it. It was much better than I was expecting. Haunting and well crafted
Really enjoyed. Was not expecting this americana country esque sound but it was a welcome one.
Do you know what I think when I hear about Ryan Addams? I think about Bryan Addams. Do you know what I think when I listen to his music? I think about a guy that could be as talented as self-destructive (sometimes POS). I like this record. Good production
Pretty solid with some clever songs
Good work by Ryan Adams
beautiful lyrics, relatively soft and gentle for the most part, easy listening and has those blood on the tracks sort of vibes to it
I absolutely love his ballads. His upbeat stuff is a little bit much for me in the morning. But I like him! That is until Karen told me some things about him. Hopefully he truly has rehabbed and reformed. There’s no doubt but that he’s talented.
Un disco ideal para relajarse. Venia teniendo un día muy estresado por mi relato mental y eso desapareció apenas empezó a sonar la 1ra canción. Un álbum que seguro voy a escuchar otra vez, en poco tiempo.
Great album. Most songs have a soothing, relaxing, southern sound with guitar, harmonica, banjo, and piano, with a few more upbeat, foot-stomping tunes.
Good sad boi music.
Actually enjoyed this one. Knew he existed, never given him a listen. Left Spotify to play off this album most of the day.
Like the art not the artist.
It's a shame Adams turned out to be such a sexual harassing asshole, he made some really good music back in the day. It would be nice if he ditched his harmonica too, but in comparison to my other criticisms that can slide. All in all, good album, bad guy. Separating art from artist it is a 4 star for sure.
7/10. This would have easily been an 8 if he'd cut it down to size a bit more. But, that's not how things worked in the year 2000.
Took a few listens, but this is great. I already had 'Carolina' on my playlist, but there are 2 or 3 other tracks that will be added, now. The slow quiet stuff, singer-songwriter 'new folk' is much better than the up-tempo stuff, but it's all a beautiful noise.
Enjoyed this one a lot.
Very very decent country rock and singer-songwriter tunes! Ryan finds a beautiful melancholy in both the tone and the lyrics of these songs. 8/10
Love the song writing, music and overall vide of the album. Never quite got into Ryan Adams but this album has renewed my interest in him as an artist. Remembering the fact that he is a not a great dude.
It seems that Ryan Adams is a garbage human being, but I try to separate the art from the person in my assessments. Sometimes it's difficult. For example, I've listened to at least one recording of a song by Charles Manson, and it's not especially good, but even if it was amazing I think I would still give him one star. I don't think Ryan Adams is that bad, so I'll just consider the music. And the bottom line is, I like it. A lot. 4 stars.
Liked that. Not cool to say but David Gray and Damien Rice vibes with added country. Also *insert joke about Bryan Adams here*
Great album. Was suprised
I think I subconsciously ignored this guy because I don't like Bryan Adams. But this is so great. Love the songs and the vibe.
I hadn't heard of this artist before, but I did enjoy listening to the album.
This turned me onto Ryan Adams around 2002. Obviously had to reconsider my views on the reprehensible man since, but the music is great and I did like this before he was a baddie (I think 🤔). Gold is probably more accessible and better as a crossover of musical styles, but this collection is tender and draws you in, showing exactly how modern country and folk can make even hardened British indie kids take note. Quite lovely. 4 stars. Awful human.
Really enjoyable album, great song writing and performance
Now, Mr. Adams polarises opinion somewhat especially after the shocking allegations that have come to light recently, but this album is a truly great effort. Cool, sharp, melancholic and wistful music to soothe even the angriest of souls. When he rocks, he rocks and when he wants to tug at your heartstrings, he’ll do just that. One of his best by a long shot.
There was probably a time when I would have given this a 5, half because of song quality and half because of the album's place in the hearts of my friend and family. But, knocking it a point for general Ryan Adams ickiness.
Great album - shame he's such a wrong'un
Really liked this sort of alternative country feel. Come pick me up, Bartering Lines, My Sweet Carolina were all stand out tracks, and there were more good ones too
:')
Nice
Quite a chill sober album which I liked, it deserves more than one listen I think and later I will do that.
I'm well past the "life's too short" stage of this project. Which means my patience for some albums is razor thin. It also means my "give a shit" level regarding accusations against artists is close to non-existent. I've never stopped thinking Annie Hall is a great movie, or that Thriller is an incredible album. I also still believe OJ Simpson was a great running back, which may explain how I can separate the art from the artist. If I'm mad at Ryan Adams for anything, it's for him letting Judd Apatow use his songs in his movies. I'm also not crazy about making an argument about Morrissey be included as the opening track here, but that's beside the point. This remains a damn good album. And if Ryan Adams had died early like Jeff Buckley or Elliot Smith, some of you would be falling over each other racing to rank this a 5. In 50 years, this album will be thought of better than Buckley's or Smith's work. Or maybe not. None of this matters. And that's the beauty of it.
3.5/5 some i really enjoyed,a lot i found a bit boring
I did very much enjoy this, but then I like the country sound. It was different to what I was expecting - I think how close it is to “Bryan Adams” made me think it would be more middle of the road.
sweet and sad
Fuck Ryan Adams, personally. This bitch blocked me on Twitter years ago for no reason. And he’s an abusive dick
Very impressed! This guy writes like Bob Dylan, but actually has a good voice. Cool and smooth, would listen again. Lyrics very poetic. My least favorite part about Bob Dylan is that freaking harmonica, and alas, this guy brought his as well.
Ryan Adams joins the list of shitty human beings whose music we've listened to for this project. As with the others, I will try to be impartial. I quite liked this album. Well-written alt-country that sounds like modernized Dylan. This is the part where I'd say I'm excited to listen again, but considering how slimy he is, maybe I'll listen to something else.
a delightful indie country box of chocolates. sometimes reminds me of Iron & Wine. 3.5
Ordentlig koselig!
Really dug this one. Not my first from Ryan Adams, but it's his first, and for a debut it's very impressive. Strong songwriting and a lot of classic musical style. Ryan Adams has become known for being a scumbag guy, manipulating/harassing female artists like Mandy Moore and Phoebe Bridgers. I had to listen to Phoebe's "Motion Sickness" in the middle of this album, because it's about him. "You said when you met me you were bored, and you were in a band when I was born." What an all-time diss. Anyway, Adams is undeniably talented and it's clear to see how a debut like this would make waves and establish him as a force in the indie rock scene. The progression from this album to the ones I've heard, like his 1989 cover album and Prisoner is really cool too. Not entirely sure where things stand with the guy, but the music is great. Favorite tracks: To Be Young, Amy, Call Me on Your Way Back Home, Come Pick Me Up, To Be the One. Album art: Obviously young picture of Ryan, leaned back below frame smoking a cigarette. Better than a lot of portrait covers, but nothing crazy. Gives me a jolt of PTSD by reminding me of that one Divine Comedy album cover. 4/5
A lovely twangy moody mood to this one.
Another new one. It was heartbreaker-y...and I liked it.
I liked this album. Everything was really well done and some of the songs were very catchy. For some reason it doesn’t feel like it will stick with me like some of my more favorite country albums, but no other real complaints.
I know of Ryan Adams and some of his songs, including the opener To Be Young (thanks to Old School) but I've never listened to him. Reminded me a bit of David Gray in his voice even though their styles are very different. This is very country rock. But what they both have is a bit of sad grace in the lyrics and tempo of many of their songs. It also reminded me of recent acts like Band of Horses, who I love, and The War on Drugs, who I only discovered through this 1,001 list but quite liked. I enjoyed this album, easy to put on and stare off or let it blend into the background. Come Pick Me Up was probably my favorite (sad and sweet) though I also quite liked the soft or sorrowful sounds on My Winding Wheel, Bartering Lines, Why Do They Leave?, and In My Time of Need. Shakedown on 9th Street is another good upbeat song like To Be Young. Not sure if this album is more than a 3.5 but that's what I said about David Gray's album and I gave it a 4.
Great album before he went all casting couch.
A really cool modern folk piece. Adam’s has such a unique voice and the messaging here hits really well in conjunction with the simple guitar melodies.
It's been a long time since this list produced an artist that I was unaware of that I really liked. Kudos.
Ryan Adams is a genius songwriter. Also, an undiagnosed autistic.
Poetic lyrics - check. Emotional vocals – check. Great melodies - check. Excellent harmonica – check. All elements that I really appreciate and thanks to Jen being the first person to really turn me onto him. I had heard some of his songs in the early 2000s . But then I have vague memories of being in Selfridge’s and buying his next album, Gold on her recommendation and really loved his style. There are so many lovely songs on here. Today, Bartering Lines really touched me. Whenever I have tried to get my English compatriots to listen and appreciate him, they always think I mean Bryan Adams and run a mile. They haven’t quite made the differentiation yet. And there are still scars from Everything I Do… To think that one small letter - B - stands between them discovering a whole new beautiful world of music. There’s still hope, though.
Ryan is a pretentious dick. This was true before the allegations of sexual misconduct. I went to see him once in the early’00s and it was just him, a piano and a bottle of wine. The music was great and he was A. Pretentious. DICK. And a big baby. His name sounds like Bryan Adams and inevitably someone would request Summer of 69. One would think he would have a strategy to deal with that other than acting like someone stole his toys. But his strategy was to have security escort the offender out of the show. (This is, or was, a regular thing). Anyway, sorry to bury the lede, I love his music. In spite of the fact that he’s _____. Besides Gold, I have no clear idea of what songs were on what album, which were him solo or with one of his bands. When I became a Ryan fan I just went to my beloved Napster and downloaded all the songs I could find. Fun fact: I discovered Tift Merritt (who I believe I put on my extracurricular list) because one of the RA songs I downloaded included him talking about her (she was his opening act). Come Pick Me Up has all the things. Ticks all the boxes. The album could have ended after Shakedown. The last three songs were unnecessary.
Such an ass. Damn good songwriter
Some good stuff on here
Shame this guy sucks the music is quite good
That was just the amount of complexity I could use today, during work. Nice and easy listening.
Favorites: -Oh My Sweet Carolina -Call Me On Your Way Back Home -Come Pick Me Up
Very surprised about this one. This is an excellent alt country album. I think the lyricism is strong and I really like the sound of it. Really wish he were not a creep.
Still my favorite Ryan Adams album. Gorgeous songs, beautiful melodies. Intimate production. Great listening experience. 4 stars
Great album but I can't listen any more
Today we have an album by Bryan’s twin brother, Ryan Adams. It was very cruel of their parents to call them such names, but I’m no parent so I can’t judge. Obviously, none of the above information is true (except me not being a parent), but sometimes it’s fun to imagine silly things. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: To Be Young, Bartering Lines Ryan Adams is one of those artists I could confident say I’d heard of, but I couldn’t say whether I had actually heard his music before today. Thankfully, that has now changed. This album was pretty great from front to back. The music is that old school kind of rock where the guitars aren’t too distorted, and the singing is silky smooth. I’d go as far as to say it borders on country at times. Overall, very enjoyable. Kinda reminded me a bit of Bryan Adams.
Very Dylan like. Good music
I like it when Adam rocks rockabilly style more of that please. His country ballads are nice but I prefer the faster stuff
I'm not gonna spend a whole lot of time waxing about this one. It's worth your time. He is a great emotional singer and interpreter. His songs absolutely exude the depths of heartbreak.
ganske glimrende
What a talent. “Come Pick Me Up” and “To Be Young" are utter classics. My objectivity is tainted by a recent solo show one attended where he was utterly tedious and requested bars closed so he had dead quiet. One supports his sobriety and considers oneself a major fan but that's too much to ask. The world's top string quartets don't do that.
was this anything new, even at the time? nope is it a fairly accomplished and catchy version of something i already like? yep
Pop tranquilo y sosegado con buenas canciones y buena voz.
album started so good but got slow at the end. one of the best so far that i didn’t know. 5 saved songs. wudda got a 5 star if the back end of the album had some more H
"Heartbreaker" is the debut album from American singer-songwriter Ryan Adams. The album was recorded in 14 days and inspired from his break-up with music industry publicist Amy Lombardi. Yeah, a lot of these songs are about relationships and particularly the negative aspects of them. There are some songs about other things too. His lyrics are one of the strengths of this album. Adams wrote and recorded this after the break-up of his alt-country band Whiskeytown and the music here defintely falls in the alt-country or just plain country genres. I'd also say some of the songs are folk too. Stark, simple and, overall, a really good album. The album begins strangely enough with a discussion on Morrissey and then goes into "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)." I think Adams is doing his best Bob Dylan impression here as it sounds like 60's Dylan. Country guitar and a sort of a blue grass beat. I think simply about being young, lost love and drugs. "Amy" is pretty bare bones and stark with an acoustic guitar and strings. An obvious song about his former girlfriend Amy Lombardi and how he misses her. "Oh My Sweet Carolina" continues the slower pace with piano and drums. Great backing vocals by Emmylou Harris. Gambling, drugs, spending money...he just wants to go back home to Carolina. "Come Pick Me Up" is uplifting sounding song with the guitar and harmonica. Great harmonies by Adams and backing vocalist Kim Richey. Now this song is smack dab in the alt-country genre and one of the best on the album. He's in love with a girl even though she treats him like shit. Hey, we have a rock song with "Shakedown on 9th Street" and the only song I'd put in that rock category. He's getting in a fight with guy over a girl. The album closer is "Sweet Lil Gal (23rd/1st)." Just a piano. The Chelsea Hotel is at that location in NYC. Is it about a girl? Is about getting drugs? Both? I didn't comment on Adam's recent multiple sexual misconduct allegations and tried to listen to this without thinking about that. In the Ryan Adams catalog of albums (there are a lot) I'd put this at the top of what I've heard. If you're an alt-country fan, this would be right up your alley. I also liked his previous band's (Whiskeytown) last album "Pneumonia" quite a bit too.
Geweldige plaat, geweldige artiest.
LP
Ryan Adams is a hell of a songwriter. He has clearly studied the work of the great country songwriters as well as Bob Dylan. His ability to tell a story is perhaps unrivaled in 2000s alternative country. The music itself isn’t terribly groundbreaking, but it highlights the vocals and allows them to do what they do best.
Enjoyable. Easy background music. Reminded me of David Gray on a few of the songs, but with a bit more of a bluesy feel. Good relaxing music. Hadn’t ever listened to his music before. Bummer to read he’s apparently been a real asshole to several female musicians. Puts a damper on enjoying his music.
This was a pleasant album after the endless punk and rock albums I’ve been getting. I only know ryan adams from his 1989 cover album Chloe made me listen to and this is a much better introduction to him than that. Adams voice and songwriting is great and songs like Amy and come pick me up are the best showcases of that. However, shakedown on 9th street is my favorite song on the album even though it’s totally out of place compared to the rest of the tracks
Quite a good album in the end.. Fireside, guitar vibe and with it some good melodies that are catching and not too redundant. The voice sounds great too. Liked it. 3.5/5, maybe small 4/5
4.0
Ok, this was a solid 4 for me. I think it could be higher if it wasn't for the startlingly loud harmonica that would appear out of nowhere. Just when you are listening intently to the lyrics and getting drawn into the music....HARMONICA screeches in your ears. It fits the music perfectly but just....turn it down!
Really nice music
Pretty good
Thought it was great. A beautiful album, gotta look into more country. Kind of like if Dylan did a 808’s and heartbreak? I know that makes no sense
Another surprising find...I have heard of Ryan Adams for years but never listened to him. This album was fantastic, a great blend of blues, rock and Americana.
Goeie singer songwriter. Leuk album
Never heard of this guy before but the album was okay. Something I would listen to but does not hold a permanent place on my playlist.
This album was so close to a 5 in my book. I really really liked it but I feel like if I'm questioning a 5 then it isn't a 5.
I’d never listened to Ryan Adams before, but I totally loved this album. Apparently Ryan Adams is a reprehensible human, but sometimes (often, actually), shitty people make great music. This is the first album thats come up that I hadn’t heard before that I’m sold on.
To Be Young and My Winding Wheel are brilliant tracks which I love to listen to, but the rest of the album doesn't quite live up to them
it feels like the classic heartbreak album and im all for it. the cover adds to the theme of the album. call me on your way back home stood out to me for its rawness and emotion
^-^
Ótimo álbum, meio rock, meio country, meio folk. Gosto muito da voz do Ryan e da sua gaita. Melhores músicas: Minha amada Come Pick me Up, Oh My Sweet Carolina, Why do they leave e In My Time of need
One of my all time faves. Takes me back to when I heard it the first time in London 2002.
This album was very very good. Not quite five stars, but close. I don't know much about Ryan Adams, but I am interested in trying some of his other work after this. Lots of great emotional story telling in this one. Reminded me of Bob Dylan with a much better voice.
Who knew all that self-loathing had a basis in reality? When an artist tells you who they are, believe them.
Enjoyable
Light and fun
Forgot what a great album this is. My favourite Ryan Adams album before...beautiful songwriting from beginning to end. Country tinges with a touch of rock and roll swagger. Love the opening discussion about Morrissey and what album(s) have Suedehead. Sounds great on vinyl too. 4.5 stars
This is some top quality Dylan worship, no? Or am I easily confused by harmonicas? Either way, I enjoyed this. I think I've heard this album a couple of times before, and gave it a couple of play throughs for the list. I think with more listens this might rise to 5 stars? 🤔 Fave track - "Come Pick Me Up" - that's a tune!
Listened to on 3/23/22 4/5 Favorite song: come pick me up, to be young Very easy listening with light country vibes and lots of emotional baggage
Felt very modern-day Bob Dylan vibes. Would listen again.
3/23/22 This guy gives me modern day Bob Dylan with an influence of James Taylor. Added 2 song to my playlists. This would be a good calm study album for the background, but I did enjoy it! Easy listen! Favorite Song: Come Pick Me Up
Great album. Real Americana style, Dylan-esque at times
Heartland rock, very Bob Dylan influenced. A lot more harmonica than I was expecting. Ballad heavy. Drunken bar singer going through a bad breakup. It's good, maybe could've cut one or two, but overall a good, dour record. Favorite tracks: "Come Pick Me Up", "In My Time of Need"
Alt Country Blues...First time of listening and what a surprise! I like this Album. from the plaintive "Amy" to the more Bluesy Numbers like "To Be Young" and "Bartering Lines" is this a break up record comparable with "Rumours" (Only kidding folks!) but this is good and I am pleasantly surprised by the quality. I was a much expecting much more Bryan than Ryan! A rightful place in this list as far as I am concerned.
gleich Doppelt von Bob Dylan begrüßt (Maggies farm auf to be young is to be sad, und der Stimme auf my Winding Wheel).
Ryan Adams, not to be confused with Canadian menace Bryan Adams, broke out onto the scene as an alt-country singer/songwriter with something to prove. Recorded in only 14 days, Adams took his relationship woes and put them into wonderful, tender songs. It's true, Adams is a spectacular songwriter. He's also a terrible person. How do we approach such a personal album from someone who has done terrible things? I don't know. I know that I like the music, and I don't like Adams, so how could I possibly rate this fairly? Whatever, it's great. Of course it's great. Fuck Ryan Adams but this album has so much to offer.
Pretty catchy and easy to listen to. The songs harken a merry database of lyrics to bring it all home
Nice country
This is about as good as it gets with Adams.
Clearly he is a strong singer songwriter
Liked it, not what I expected. Never heard of the artist, good for a melancholy evening.
Loved it
I really liked this album. The lead song is really good, and the rest of this album was well-crafted, heartbreaking music.
2 Ryan Adams albums in 1 week! I think I preferred this one to Gold.
I always wanted to hate RA but I dated a girl who was a big fan and went very slowly and reluctantly from "a couple songs are alright, I guess" to "damn, this guy's good." Later albums have some higher highs but this is probably his best album front to back (though there are a couple of duds) so four stars. Too bad he's a big creep.
Favoriete nummers: - To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High) - Bartering Lines
Country and folk undertones mixing together to be achingly sweet
good, enjoyable listen. Reminded me a little of Bob Dylan sound.
Country-ish alt classic.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: To be young, Amy, Bartering lines
Country/ folk rock, je to celkom fajn
Pas mal Good, great, but not bad
Chiller and background-y with a great vibe
Really good album, but Ryan Adams is still a terrible person
To be young: excellent My winding wheel: excellent Amy: very good Oh my sweet Carolina: very good Bartering lines: good Call me on your way back home: very good Damn sam: good Come pick me up: excellent To be the one: average Why do they leave?: excellent Shakedown on 9th street: above average Don’t ask for the water: average In my time of need: very good Sweet lil gal: very good 8/10
Sad, chill, alternative country music. Created after a breakup, this album is great listening for anyone going through the same thing.
Very nice album
Very emotionally powerful and compelling
OK so I don't like or understand country. But there's a certain strain of "alt-country" I can get behind, even if I'm ignorant of the style it's an alternative to. Bright Eyes are a good example, and some moments of this album sound reminiscent of them. Much of it is more rugged, with some straight-ahead rocking and some Americana kinda ballads. I've listened to at least two Ryan Adams albums in the past, but this one clicked better with me. I also just discovered that he covered Taylor Swift's 1989 album, and it's possibly even better than the original. I'm feeling a solid 4 for this one. It's good stuff.
Um álbum simples e muito bom. Amy é uma das minhas favoritas.
Fijne rock klink jaren 60
This was very good folk. Take a listen again sometime with a cup of coffee and really listen.
Mis canciones fav: "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)", "Amy", "Call Me on Your Way Back Home", "Come Pick Me Up". 8.5/10
Classic Americana / heartland rock, that isn't absolutely boring.
well, i didn't like the other album on the list, but this one struck me quite differently.
Has kinda a Bob Dylan vibe in a good way
Not my cup of tea musically, but I found myself greatly enjoying this album.
I liked most of this album, though there were a few songs that didn't quite hit the right spot.
Bobo dylan californiano
Excellent album
I liked this a lot, it was a good mix of folk and country. I have not listened to that much out of the genre so it was enjoyable. Would listen to it again.
Bit of a rollercoaster with this one. It started (didn't know who he was) and I was like "oh yes 5 stars, so emotional", but then he brought out the harmonica. Big mistake. Also it was too long, some of the songs got a bit samey towards the end. Then I found out who he was from the reviews. Yikes! Anyway it ends up being a 3
I feel like this will improve with repeated listening - it didn’t immediately grab me.
Guys the last 3 albums feel so sonically similar. Can we get a switch up
I thought this album had a really fun interlude but the expectations set at the beginning were not met throughout the album. Still an ok listen, 3 stars.
I like the stripped back country vibe of this album. Some good melodies and harmonies.
"Come Pick Me Up" will always be near and dear to my heart. Like a ghost on my shoulder. **** As for the rest of this album..... well, Ryan is a fantastic mimic. He can impersonate his heroes pretty well. He loves Dylan, obviously. He has a great voice, and good taste. The songs are pretty strong, particularly the mid-album trio of "Call me on your way back home," "Damn, Sam," and "Come Pick Me Up." But the album is too long, and if you aren't into the low-tempo singer-songwriter thing, this is going to be quite the slog. But if that’s your style- this will hit the spot. THREE STARS
A personal favorite but I still like other albums from him better
Separating the art from the artist and this album is just alright. It's an alt country album about heartbreak, which I've grown to enjoy a lot of alt country, but I just don't really connect with break-up albums. Admitting my bias against the artist and it's hard to take some of these emotional songs seriously when I know he's a manipulative asshole. Even the anecdote about naming the album feels disingenuous to me. He deserves the heartbreak.
(Argument with David Rawlings Concerning Morrissey) n/a To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High) 3.3 My Winding Wheel 3 Amy 3.2 Oh My Sweet Carolina 3.3 Bartering Lines 3.5 Call Me On Your Way Back Home 3 Damn, Sam (I Love a Woman That Rains) 2.8 Come Pick Me Up 3.2 To Be the One 2.9 Why Do They Leave? 3 Shakedown on 9th Street 3.4 Don't Ask for the Water 2.8 In My Time of Need 3 Sweet Lil Gal (23rd/1st) 2.7 Score: 3.078571429
I’m surprised at how this album turned out. For me at least. I don’t know what I expected other than feeling like my time would be wasted. It still doesn’t feel productive but at least I’m not cringing after every song. This is mellow and I can’t quite figure out what the album is best suited for. Going to sleep perhaps? It’s decent but that only gets you 3 stars in my books. That is tough company. I think maybe 3.5 stars is more deserving. Choice cut: My Winding Wheel
I've never listened to his music before. All I know is he's put out a shit ton of albums, he covered Taylor Swift's 1989 album, Mandy Moore and Phoebe Bridgers don't like him and he's divisive. I'm 5-6 songs deep into this thing and I realize I've heard this album before...but I've never listened to it before, if you know what I mean. It's not bad, it's just not memorable. Maybe I'll try 1989 here in a few minutes.
Miestä ja kitaraa. Hidasta tempoa. Varmaan jonkinlaista American folkia.
It was a little slow. But I enjoyed listening to the lyrics and liked a couple songs.
Is it country? Is it pop? Is it from the 70s? Is it from 2010? Meh
Not bad, but on the slower side. 3/5
Nice to listen to, not off to buy the album but a good listen
mellow. chill. laid back. sad.
Huge Whiskeytown fan and followed Ryans early career but kinda tired of him. This is a solid record though
Mediocre. Inoffensive. 3/5.
I understand he’s not a good person. But I’m not reviewing the person. I’m reviewing the album, and this album is pretty decent.
Alright, the first track made me want to listen to bob dylan and I never quite got over that.
Neat. This was just pleasant to listen to. I really had no strong expectations, except I guess that this was a little bit mainstream pop rock. I guess that's roughly right but it seemed to be delivered in such a high quality way. Reminds me of Damien rice in bits but maybe more straight up and not so emo. The start feels like a caricature impression of Dylans early electric period except without Dylans goofy voice - kind of works though!
We got jeff buckley at home.
Solid Americana starter album.
Not my thing but it's a good album
i bet he STILL goes for sloppy steaks at Truffoni's
Alright, a little boring for me but not bad for sure. 3 stars
Fin, men blir fort litt bakgrunnsmusikk.
Enjoyed this
Very emotional, I love the clear vocals. Also, most tracks have beautiful outros. Strong 3 Favorite track(s) To Be Young Amy Oh My Sweet Carolina
So much better than his other album on this list but not worth a relisten
Loose, shaggy even, but compelling and enjoyable
Could finish the album, I was in a metal mood. What i heard felt pretty middle of the road.
I listened to a few tracks while commuting and it was okay while not really grabbing me. I put it on later while mowing and started to appreciate it more. The later tracks specifically got interesting and then when the album repeated I appreciated the first tracks more on second listen.
Surprisingly good :o
979 albums in and I manage to get two of his in one week. I didn't go into this album with any optimism. I'd had another Ryan Adams album on here and it kind of sucked. It was bland and lacked personality, sort of like a Temu Bruce Springsteen. This one starts off a lot better. Track two, the first proper track, reminded me so strongly of early-ish Dylan, so that's a positive. It does lull after that, unfortunately. There is an upswing towards the end, at least. It's not great overall, nothing revolutionary or anything, but a damn sight better than the other album of his I had to listen to.
Solid millennial alt-country. I'm a bigger fan of Josh Ritter but I hear less about him for some reason. If you like mildly sad music that's striving for authenticity (the striving is part of the problem), this is for you. Good but not great (that's Wilco from the same era). 3/5
Pistas destacadas To Be Young My Winding Wheel Amy Oh My Sweet Carolina Call me on your way back home Damn Sam Shakedown on 9th street Don't Ask for the Water
The definition of coffee shop music. Nothing offensive, nothing stand out. His two best tunes not on this album.
I enjoyed this album fine from Adams! I believe this is my second Adams album on here. He kinda sounded like a wannabe Bob Dylan in some parts but overall I thought this was a good alt-country album. This album is not typically my vibe and it was kind of a sleepy album in some parts but overall I liked it for what it was even though I don’t think I need to listen to it again.
At least it wasn't Bryan Adams
mediocre for the most part—its slow melodies are nice sometimes but not when it's a good 80% of the tracks, and I'm not feeling the harmonicas either—but not the worst.
Hasn't aged very well but Emmylou sounds amazing as always, god she's great.
