Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Dinner music if you were hosting a 80 yo white southern military veteran who liked country music. Relaxing but very american and boring, as every American thing seems to be these days
I feel like I can find this same music from many other bands. I don't think it's terrible by any means, just not very interesting. There are some catchy moments, but nothing that blows my nips off. Weak 3
Yawn. Liked the Tears of Rage cover, didn't enjoy much on this, but didn't dislike it either. One in A Hundred is a good song - proto-Eagles. Light 3/5
It was fine... not bad, not life changing, but fine :)
I liked this quite a lot. In not sure much was instantly memorable after the fact, but it's very pleasant and I'd like to hear it some more.
Very good record.
7/10 A classy album - you could tell immediately from the voice and songwriting that this was a talent. Simple country folk rock songs delivered well. Best: One In a Hundred
Kind of boring. He is a good lyricist and the harmonica is great, but everything else was mediocre
hell yeah brother
Good but not essential for me.
Nice listen, nothing too groundbreaking. 2.5/5
Off the jump, I'd say this guy sounds like he's trying to do his best Bob Dylan impression. The title track White Light is an enjoyable listen even with the harmonica mixed in, but the Dylan schtick is getting old. The rest of this fell into the background as I was working, but musically it was fine. Nothing to write home about. Lands right at 2.5 for me, but will bump to a low 3 since it was palatable.
Love the stripped down With Tomorrow -- so pretty. White Light has a Dylan-esq nature about it. Mostly tied up in the vocals I think. Where My Love Lies Asleep is another pleasant one. For A Spanish Guitar sounds just like a Sufjan Stevens song. This was a pleasant listen through and through. I found the bass tone to be very warm and inviting and his vocals to be smooth and comforting. Very high 3 for me.
Good ol' folk country. Always like to give these albums a nod for not being pop country. Right down the middle as a perfectly fine album.
Nice easy listening music. Thought this was Bob Dylan the pretty much the whole time, but turns out he was on Tears of Rage so that makes sense. High 3
Kinda a snoozefest for a lot of it but the guitar really drew me in for a bunch of songs towards the end especially the last song.
Pretty solid folk, disregarding the inclusion of my least favorite instrument (the harmonica)
Learned that he was the singer for the Byrds
Not my normal style but I appreciated the songwriting.
Nice folksy rock. Liked the rendition of staff by me. Not sure if it was original and I didn't realize, but enjoyed the take nonetheless
I quite enjoyed this
This album was mostly acoustic which I thought was a great decision. When I looked up the artist, I saw that we was listed as a folk rock artist. I didn't really catch far too much of the folk in there (which is actually a good thing). The songs were soothing, and it was a nice listen all around. The only detractor for me was the harmonica in a couple songs as it just sounded so shrill, but I attribute that to me not being a harmonica fan. Overall, this was a nice album and an easy, enjoyable listen.
It was good?
Probably a 3.7? Good vibes though
Very chill - some good songwriting, pretty Dylan-y in parts
This is pleasant. Not sure I would go back to it but didn’t mind listening to it.
pleasant surprise!
Didn’t end up finishing but definitely enjoyed all I heard. 3.5
Americana before Americana. Nice solid album
It’s got some soul for sure. You can hear the Byrds but also some Tom Petty and some Neil Young. If his name was something cool and country like Shooter Jones instead of the WASPy “Gene Clark” I bet this would have sold better
Pretty eh, not a massive fan of the harmonica and the album didn't seem that interesting. low 3/5
New to me. Definitely feels heavily influenced by Dylan. Definitely feels contemporary w/ Jim Croce, Donovan, Cat Stevens, etc. "For a Spanish Guitar" and "Because of You" are good ones. "Where My Love Lies Asleep" is also good, and has some musical similarities to the Stones' "Sweet Virginia" (and this album pre-dated Exile on Main Street by 9 months). The cover of "Stand By Me" is a stinker, though. Overall, a solid 70s AM radio album.
Sounds like something you could hear for an old family pictures recopilation video.
I have no memory of this album (or any of Gene Clark's other solo efforts after the Byrd's disbanded), but I was pretty young at the time. After listening to it, it strikes me as a quite competent collection of songs that have kind of a mellow Grateful Dead vibe. It's certainly much better than you might expect an album so thoroughly ignored by the American audience to be. But neither does it rise to the level you might imagine from the Album of the Year award it received in the Netherlands.
3.1 That was actually alright. Started off pretty uninteresting but grew on my as it went on. Reminded me of Beck's Sea Change in parts. Few songs saved down.
Solid folk album, I enjoyed
This was kinda vibes. I understand the reviews though. This album would be nice to play in the evening before going to bed. I do wonder if I still remember any of it tomorrow. Idk, now that I’m thinking about it… If I wanted this vibe I would put on Bob Dylan. But still it’s not so bad. 3 stars.
Overall: 6/10 This was incredibly okay! Sort of country, sort of folk, sort of rock. There were moments of greatness but for the most part, it wasn't anything that usually catches my attention. Fav Song: With Tomorrow Least Fav Song: The Virgin
I can picture Gene sitting by a window on a slow, breezy summer day and lazily singing these songs to himself. With that mental picture, it's quite a pleasant listen.
It was okay, I will not return to it and I could have done without it 3/5
I adore Gene Clark. No Other gets 6 stars in my book. But this one didn’t get me on first listen. Gois singing and songwriting. Not enough surprises.
Good stuff
was not bad. nothing that i would listen to by choice though
I did not enjoy White Light as much as I did enjoy No One. The songwriting isn't as strong on this one and the songs can feel a bit sleepy and same-y at times. The Virgin leads off the album and it feels like an intentional attempt to write lyrics that would fit in on a mid-60's Bob Dylan album. It even has a harmonica. Tears of Rage sounds almost exactly like the song that is after it, 1975. I barely could tell when one song began and the other ended. I listened to the deluxe version, which had his cover of Stand by Me on it. I have no strong feelings on that one. Perhaps it was unnecessary but that's also why it was on the deluxe edition, I guess.
Found it to be decent but 'light'
easy listening. a lot of harmonica...
The album is okay for easy listening but there are too many other singer-songwriters I like better to want to hear more. 3 stars or C-.
But harmonica heavy
3 Stars (8/15)
Gentle country with a bit of rock
Snooze fest. Top 1001? Not sure Jeff, not unpleasant but nothing special
Easy listening
It was pretty, it was simple, it just was. If I had been in a more deep mindset and on a mountain somewhere i might have rated higher, but today it was just nice.
Está bien, le mete cosas interesantes al folk pero tampoco es muy mi onda.
Ganz nett, aber mehr als drei Sterne sind nicht drinne. Fand den Wikipedia Artikel interessant durchzulesen
fine but boring. put macie to sleep
6/10 - It was some decent country. But nothing crazy. Where my love lies asleep kind of sounded like the overcooked main theme.
Didn’t think he had a great voice but the album was solid
I think I liked No Other better, but this was decent. I appreciate this genre of folk/country rock.
ai että 2 albumia piti herralta napata, taskuun ottaa kaksi eikä yksi. ei yksi että ok byrds laulaja nyt sooloartisti kriittisesti tykätty mutta ketään ei kuitenkaan kiinnosta niin otetaanmpas yksi sieltä pitää nyt muistella herraa mutta ei napataan kaksi.. kaksi päivää.. on kyllä erikoisia vähän erikoisempia kovereita tässäkin. en tiedä mikä ihme siinä on ettei voi vähän niitä lyriikoita rustata sille paperille ja jotain vähän yrittää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. vää.. valitettavasti pakko olla objektiivinen for a spanish guitar
lágstemmt fólkköntrí. svipar til margs frá svipuðum tíma, fyrri hluti áttunda áratugarins, og er ósköp áferðarfallegt. sum lögin virðast þó eiga annan umgang eftir. 3,5.
Mellow easy listen but didn’t get much beyond background music for me. Nice harmonies and music Reminiscent of Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, and Neil Young
Didn’t really stick out as something special.
Gene’s voice is so sweet and this album is a lozenge for a sore throat. Though it gets a bit sleepy in the middle, it ends as strongly as it begins. Standout tracks are: “With Tomorrow” and “Ship of the Lord”
по звуку типичный тех времён альбом, по произношению некоторые места показались смешными. в целом не запомнилось
over its runtime, gene clarks biggest strengths that he displays on this record ultimately become his weaknesses. its calm, stripped down, but also redundant and uneventful. its intimate, personal, but also mildly self-absorbed. its relaxing, soothing, but also boring. its interesting to see how his songwriting chops get lost amongs the simple instrumentals, considering its not a busy album at all. i still think theres some good songs here, some id even say are great, but i dont think this should be on this list.
2.7 2x
this was pleasant enough but really dragged and wore thin for me about halfway through.
Good album. Well written and performed. Not all like the Byrds. Seems more like a C&W album.
Het duurde een aantal nummers om in de mood te komen, maar toen werd het wel goed
Good songs, great band. Sounds like it could have been released last week, except that nobody sings like that anymore. I wonder why not?
i liked this more than i thought i would! 3.5
3/5. 13 year old me would eat this up, and honestly it might get to me after a listen or two more but right now, it feels like I could instead just listen to Bob Dylan or Neil Young and get the same but better result. To be fair, I did not hate it and I do enjoy this music but it didn't stand out as groundbreaking or crazy good. Just a nice folk rock album with calming vocal themes. An interesting take on Tears of Rage as well, more submitting to the pain than begging for it to end as the Band's suggests. Best Song: White Light, For A Spanish Guitar, Tears Of Rage
This was pleasant. Not mind blowing or anything, but pretty enjoyable to me. Solid 3.5 kinda stuff.
Better than the reviews. Nothing special. I really enjoyed The Byrds country album, but this falls short of that.
Inoffensive but that's about it.
This artist was with the Byrds, and I can hear their music in this album. I listened to the original album release, not the later release with bonus tracks. Overall very smooth and easy listening, my only criticism is with the frequent annoying bean bag percussion throughout.
Just some good heartfelt, acoustic music. little chill for my tastes
not really for me, don't hate it or anything
I don't know that this should be in the top 1001 albums one should hear before they die but this was a pleasant and enjoyable listen.
Not my genre of music by any means, but some interesting tracks, and if I have to listen to Country it would definitely be Johnny
Found this to be relatively boring punctuated by a few highlights (Stand by Me and the last song...can't remember the name).
It is fine but not particularly noteworthy.
75% Best: The Virgin; One In A Hundred; 1975 Must-Hear? Not quite
Hörbar.
This is actually some good Dylan-esque song writing and playing. Not bad at all.
Wow! Gene Clark was totally new to me and this album is really good. He's no Bob Dylan, but certainly in the same league.
That’s nice.
That was pleasant
Relativ ruhig. Classic folk/'rock'? First:3/5 Again? 2/5
2.8
the other GC album ive had so far was better, too on the nose dylanesque but still good
Chill, classic Country / Folk
Very popular in Europe! Dutch thought best album of '71. Nice and laid back—he’s got a bit of Tom Petty twang in his voice.
I think this one bears more listens--sort of a Bob Dylan/Jim Croce vibe and that's not a bad thing. I enjoyed the style, but nothing seemed to stick with me.
I'm with the Americans on this - see Wikipedia). Pleasant but uninspiring Folk-Rock from the early 1970s. His cover of the Ben E. King standard "Stand by Me" is particularly insipid.
Trying so hard to be Dylan, while completely missing what made Dylan amazing. You can't be authentic when you're a copy. This is a reasonably good album. It's competent, heck more than competent. It lacks spark though. It would be so much better if he was being himself rather than trying to be what he imagined the public wanted at the time.
ok
The man had a voice!
Helt okej om än något tråkig.
I thought this was so cute and peaceful for the peaceful mood I was in. I always like to listen to albums in the morning on the bus so this made the condensation on the windows feel purposeful and atmospheric instead of a pain in the bum
Solid but sleepy.
This was a really nice listen. Like most folks, I always thought Roger McGuinn was the main dude of the Byrds. Probably due to his signature jangly Rickenbacker sound. Come to find out, Gene was the main songwriter behind their classic hits. Sad that this album never gained much traction, because if you close your eyes the downstream influence is everywhere. From Tom Petty to Peter Buck and many in between. It all started with the Byrds. And that influence continues here.
I definitely really liked some of these tracks, but also definitely found several to be pretty sleepy. Probably not one that I’ll return to frequently, but nice.
A nice listen and enjoyed the solid guitar playing and song writing. A little on the sleepy side for my tastes but still a solid record.
I'm surprised by the low ratings on this album. It is solid. Not great, but solid. Shame it was entirely overlooked. 3.25/5
I preferred the other Gene Clark album we had, more concise and felt a bit more genre-pushing. A lot of this album was fading into the background, it was the Stand By Me cover that stood out, which isn't a great sign considering how vanilla of a song that is. Fave Tracks: Ship of the Lord, Winter In 3/5
It was pleasant but not something i will listen to again
pretty good. solid 3
Super mellow and smooth. In the vein of James Taylor. The perfect thing to listen to on this overcast day as my 4-year old naps in the van on the way home.
If a George Harrison album and a John Lenon album had a very harmonica inclined child. 3.6/5
Liked the bass runs on most of the songs
Another really beautiful and relaxing album, for me this is an ideal album to fall asleep to
This album could be released in 2024, groovy.
Nice. Stands up well against Neil Young's Harvest.
Good album, though couldn't listen to all songs, due to unavailability for me on Spotify and similarly wasn't available on Youtube music.
Lord save me from the 3/5 mid “dude with a guitar” albums.
The Virgin // For A Spanish Guitar //
Fine
Love songs and folk songs. Really good cover of The Band's "Tears of Rage" -- pleasant enough.
Gene Clark has made better albums, I think No Other is a much more innovative sounding album by him. It has nice guitar playing at times and Clark's vocals are always pleasant to hear, but it doesn't stand out in an ocean of memorable 70's songwriters.
wow a lot of hate for this one, not bad not good, just average imo
Ein Singer-Songwriter Gitarre, Mundharmonika, Sänger Plätschert so dahin ...
Listen to 'No Other' to hear Gene at his best.
This guy stopped being one of the Byrds because he was afraid to fly lol. This album has extremely divorced energy. It's relaxed country-rock with intertwined acoustic guitars, a touch of bass, and barely a drum, it puts the emphasis on the lonely vocals and mournful harmonica. It's all sad, bitter, and longing lyrics and gentle strumming. Sometimes it sounds like a mediocre Dylan rip off, but the best bits are like a folksier version of the Eagles. Cold beer on a hot porch kind of music. I actually like it a lot, but wouldn't really consider it essential listening at all - he has better work elsewhere and other people do this genre better...
This was like all country singers rolled into one act.
Wasn't sure what to make of this at first, but it clicked about halfway in. Fits under the same roof in my mind as James Taylor, Jackson Browne or a little bit of Warren Zevon (though he has his own shack, let's be real).
An enjoyable collection of songs pretty well delivered. Fifty plus years on it now seems underwhelming.
I wouldn't doubt that it's objectively good Country music and songwriting, but this album just doesn't do it for me. Let's just say I'd be annoyed if someone gave me this album for my birthday, but if I was really drunk and someone put this on I wouldn't walk out the room. 3/5 ⭐️
Pretty country, considered to be one of the best songwriting.
It’s yet another one of those ‘nice’ albums. There’s nothing explicitly exceptional here, but there is a constant nice feeling. There’s better singer-songwriter albums out there, and there’s certainly worse. But I’m glad this exists - there’s quite a few genuinely brilliant folk/country songs on here with serious Dylan influence without plagiarism, and there is a fantastic Tears Of Rage cover. So that is all. It’s a very nice album, well worth a listen. It’s not competing for the best singer-songwriter album, because it doesn’t need to. It does its own thing, and that’s just fine.
A fun run through a folk rock staple.
a soothing country album with dulcet tones and simple instrumentation that still hits home. I liked it.
Fav: 1975 Least Fav: With Tomorrow It was alright, consistently decent but nothing really stood out. I’ll probably forget about this album within a week.
Pleasant Country rock.
Not sure exactly how this dude got such a spread of genres; country, pop, folk, rock, psychedelic rock, and singer songwriter. This is album 144 for me and that's easily the most I've seen so far. What's psychedelic about this album? Anyway. It's amazing that he was so big in the Netherlands, haha. It's not bad. Just country folk, right down the middle. I just keep hankering for Townes Van Zandt. 2.5
2.5
fínt ... ljúft og gott
Alright it grew on me as I listened 2.5 stars
Didn't recognise any of the songs. Quite relaxing though.
I see why it sold poorly in the US: it’s not bad, but there is no standout for radio play. An example of several famous musicians coming together and not making a great album.
All the songs sounded pretty much the same. Very meh.
Not a bad little album. Sometimes reminds me of how I imagine Bob Dylan sounds to people who don't hate Bob Dylan. Nothing on here that particularly wow'd me, but I enjoyed it alright pretty much all the way through. 3.25/5
This was ok, but a bit on the sleepy side for me. It didn't catch me in any strong way, but also it wasn't bad. 2.75/5
3/5
70’s ballady music
Folk / country feel
No standouts but very pleasant. Gene Clark does simple better. I won't argue that it doesn't deserve to get ripped on by a bunch of the reviews on here though. Couple things stop this from being a solid 4: - I thought I would kinda like the Byrds before I started this exercise. Now I see a Byrds thing and I'm like 'oh christ, the Byrds, what mediocre bullshit is this going to be now'. - Multiple songs sound like they're trying hard to be different from something huge. Half the thing wants to sound like You Ain't Goin' Nowhere wants to pull it in, and a song's guitar line sounds like Only Love Can Break Your Heart. But I think I have a soft spot for this country folk sound, so I will listen to it again. music: appreciated. (⌐._.)
Not sure of the necessity of two Gene Clark albums on the list, but just like the other one, I thought this was decent and pleasant enough. I’ll fly off the handle and give a one-star if there’s a third one though (just kiddin).
Singer songwriter. It was fine, but didn’t really distinguish itself from all the other Bob Dylan-esque “guitar and harmonica” albums.
Nothing much to report
Very easy on the ears, you can hear the early Byrds sound, and some lovely songwriting especially the first track.
Never heard of this guy, but he's got a nice enough rocky/country vibe.
this album sounds kinda like this guy wishes he was what neil young is, but that being said, this isn't nearly as bad as the other reviews made it out to be.
Dylan-light.
Maybe if I was camping, deliriously drunk,I might've enjoyed this.
Like a better vocally Dylan but with less gripping lyrics. A good album but best 1001 of all time? I dunno about that. Still… very enjoyable!
enjoyable. who is gene clark though?
Perfectly acceptable, if a bit long.
Nicely understated and under appreciated. Soft and lovely, the album can sound a bit the same at first, but the songs quickly grow on you.
Nice singer-songwriter-album. Not really exceptional.
Made it all the way through which is good for his type of music. Pretty nice.
It’s a fine album. I can appreciate it but there wasn’t really anything that stood out to me. 6.5/10
Not sure if this could be neatly categorized as country but for me I would say it is. Love the harmonica!
good but not my type
decent album, i thought the tracks sounded nice, i probably wouldn’t listen to them in my free time but they were okay
Very conflicted. It was good, but not memorable. Right in the middle of 3 and 4, but I’ll keep it closer to 3 this time.
Experience was incredibly soothing, made for a nice wind down after work. There wasn’t really anything I didn’t like about this album, but none of the songs really stood out either. Almost a four
a fine album. its nice, its lovely to listen to, but thats about it for me.
3 stars. Some nice tracks, others not my thing.
It was just ok
Never heard his solo music. Loved the Byrds; this album is nice but not great.
A little too slow for me, though it does have a good sound to it.
It's pleasant. Sadly pleasant. That's about it.
Nice, but not as interesting as the other Gene Clark album on the list!
De va no nice
Mediocre.
The first song got my hopes up. Rest of it reminded me that this man was in the byrds. Solid but not exciting.
Pleasant and enjoyable but nothing to write home about for me
Gene Clark is the singer/songwriter that was with the Byrds during the mid-sixties. White Light is one of his solo albums. This is a collection of country rock songs from a historically important figure. These are good, but not particularly memorable songs.
There have been a lot of pretty awful country albums on this list, especially recently, so it was great to hear one that was actually pretty good. The Dylan influence was also quite clear (as you’d expect from a member of The Byrds) and while there was nothing too memorable it was a really nice listen while it was on
the virgin sehr cute with tomorrow au super, schön beruhigend bin jz kein riesefan vode schnorregige because of you ischmer chli zu langsam mann s het so guet ahgfange und jz de rest findi alles chli glich d perkussion findi isch au immer chli glich stand by me 😕 so es schöns lied und es isch eifach chli apathisch
Good
Ehh….good but this drags on.
Enjoyed this. Easy listening and pleasant.
I didn't realise Gene Clark was a member of the Byrds, but it makes sense. The guitar playing is nice if pretty simple and it's a soft and enjoyable little collection of songwriting. Some great moments but a few too many that didn't really stick in the brain after a few listens, for me.
Meh
También destacaría "For a Spanish Guitar", y "With Tomorrow". Y me gusta mucho la versión que hace de "Tears of Rage", de Bob Dylan, y su mirada resignada a un presente descorazonador y un futuro incierto.
Very Bob Dylan!
Chilled country vibes
It's like if Bob Dylan was a slightly better singer and half as interesting as a songwriter...which is still pretty good. Favorite track: 1975
Kind of felt like diet Bob Dylan. And a lot of the songs where kind of the same. Probably not coming back to this.
You know for being an aficionado for all things singer-songwriter 70s country rock, I really did not vibe with this album. It felt very... basic..? Like it was fine. I enjoyed it. There was certainly nothing wrong with it, I just don't feel like there was anything that really spoke to me. Maybe I need another listen to engage with the lyrics? IDK. The Stand By Me cover was a high point for me.
Never heard of Gene Clark. Reminded me a lot of Jim Croce. Big a bit different, I just can't peg exactly how. Enjoyed the story telling and easy melodies.
Quite pleasant singer songwriter, one of two songs that were quite beatlesy and a bit more complex but mostly just some decent acoustic songs. Guys voice was nice without being amazing, it wasnt bland but it was all just fine. Nailed on 3
Pretty good. Reminiscent of John Denver and the like. I almost dropped it to 2 stars because of the iffy rendition of Stand By Me, but will keep it at 3 because I genuinely enjoyed the rest.
This album just sort of washed over me. There’s not much here to really grab onto. This is not an outstanding example of folk or country especially for its time. The instrumentation was pleasant enough and the production was fine, but the lyrics didn’t really grab me. Overall, while an ok album, it’s puzzling why it’s on this list when so many better examples of country and folk exist from the same time.
This Gene Clark folk/country rock album is fine (somewhere between 3 and 4 stars) but not clear why it should be included in the list. In the past I was quite a bit disappointed when I bought a cd copy, had rather high expectations knowing No Other which is an exceptionally good 70s album (which apparently was not understood at that time)
Gentle, relatively uneventful country album.
It's kinda sleepy.
It’s perfectly respectable folk/country. It neither dazzles nor disgusts. His work with The Birds is much more compelling, which goes to show that 1) a meh song can be great with the right arrangement, and 2) a truly great song doesn’t need bells and whistles to show its greatness. 2.8
Good singer songwriter fare. Seems strange this wasn't popular in the day. Has Dylan/The Band feel in spots which is nice. Other songs get a little sluggish. I only listened to the original nine songs. 3.5
Some great lyrics, the style just wasn't for me.
Solid 60-luvun tyyliä
Easy listening album. Liked most of the songs. Probably wouldn't listen to it over and over again.
Solid album.
Most of the album was okay, bit that was a pretty terrible version of Strange By Me.
1971 Folk Rock, Gene Clark of the Byrds. 3.5
Sounds dated.
Solid
Good enjoyable album. Gald it found its way on the list
Folgende Titel sind meine Highlights: White light, Because Of You, One In A Hundred, For A Spanish Guitar,Where My Love Lies Asleep.
This album was a lot better than I thought it would be.
Good to weave to
Great laid back 70s acoustic songwriter album.
I enjoy folk so this was an easy listen. Classic 3-4 range for me but generic enough to be 3.
Another 70s folk rock album. Felt a little more present that previous entries, but still, not my cup.
Kinda boring, covers are extra boring
Mellow 70's stuff. Not bad, just not that good either.
Pleasant enough
Country moment
Eh. Its pleasant, but not sticking with me
Very Appalachian or John Denver like. This is part of the soft contry rock of the 70's.
Pasô.
Can’t remember the difference between this and the next one
5.5/10
Very good, highly listenable. Unsure why it’s considered essential by these standards, and don’t see much of a reason to go back to it, but nothing wrong with it. 3.5/5
Not bad, nice mix of styles
Decent folk album. Standout songs: For a Spanish Guitar, Winter in, Tears of Rage
tryin' to be Dylan
better than I thought. Enjoyed it pretty well. I liked the Stand by Me version
Rocking chair music. Not bad though.
Ni fu ni fa.
I’m shocked that I didn’t hate this. It seems right up my alley as something I would hate on, but pretty quickly I discovered that it was actually calming. This is one of those albums where I wish there was a better scale (1-10), because a four is too high in comparison to the other albums but a 3 seems poorly reflected. I can say I actually enjoyed this- It was a calming album, and his voice was almost reassuring in a way. A very high and satisfied 3 from me.
I didn't think I'd like this one - not really a fan of Americana/country-rock for the most part - but the gentle simplicity and easy production of this one is just ... nice. Not great but nice. Reminds me a bit of a softer Jonathan Edwards and occasional Don McLean. A nice self-reminder to not always look too deeply into finding complexity or drama and take the music for what it is - honestly, the album cover alone is an apt description of the feel of the album - a little boring, a little slow, but sometimes you just need a little uncomplicated 3 chord melodies for a few minutes. 6/10 3 stars.
Very pleasant
Folk but with a mournful edge running through it. Certainly worth revisiting but this is a *** 1/2 for now.
I expected just a standard 1970 country/folk album and that’s basically what this is. The opener, The Virgin is probably the best track with its deep melody, that sounds like the intro to True Detective. Overall the album does keep a bit more energy than a lot of these types of albums. Clark comes off as a bit of a poor man’s Dylan 6.5/10
I don't know any Gene Clark songs - so this will be all new for me today. This is pretty collection of country tinged folk jams. His voice is nice, with a gentle twang and the folksy guitar strumming is sweet with generally sparse instruments otherwise, but used to nice effect. For example, some subtle but nice bongo work keeping the beat on some of these songs. I mostly found it to be background music at the start, but my ears were captured by the middle tracks "Tears of Rage" and "1975". "Tears" is originally a Bob Dylan/ The Band songs, so that's sort of damning praise for Gene I guess. His cover of "Stand By Me" is fine. The end of the album is more pleasant folk rock tunes, but no more big stand outs except the closer, "Winter In" I would probably throw this on again. It's mellow, heartfelt, and easy to listen to, a nice warm voice and delicate guitar pluckin' jams. I think it has the potential to really grow on me.
Sounds pretty good. Classic country from the 70s. The guy can play guitar. 3 stars.
Highlights: The Virgin, White Light, One In A Hundred, Tears of Rage. If you remember The Byrds and like Dylan's earlier albums, look no further. It's nice. This is folk rock album you can enjoy while slowly sipping a drink and watch the summer sun set. Overall: 5/10
Style de musique qui me correspond bien, chill pour un dimanche à la maison. Mais on a l'impression que le chanteur n'a pas "d'empreinte personnelle", qu'il cherche juste à imiter Bob Dylan et Neil Young. 3,5
3. I liked it. Felt zoned out. Sometimes it's the notes that you don't play that are the most beautiful
very good as "background music"
Pleasant guitar melodies and vocals. Very passable.
This was a fine album, a nice outdoor on a summer Sunday kind of vibe. Gene's a great guitar player and a fine singer, but most of the songs started blending together for me upon second listen.
It was nice to listen to but nothing terribly interesting
Never heard this before, has a couple of really nice songs on it, generally pretty good!
Bobbles along, neither upsetting nor exciting, Clark never better than when he was in The Byrds.
I cannot believe I actually liked the majority of the songs on this because after the opening few riffs I was like, oh hell no. But the second song was my favorite, and a few others I found endearing in an almost John Denver way.
Solid album for the genre
I didn’t dislike any songs, but didn’t love any either.
Gene Clark’s name struck a chord of familiarity to me, but I couldn’t place why. After a bit of googling, I found that he was in The Byrds. I’ve enjoyed every Byrds album so far, so I’m looking forwards to hearing this album today. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: The Virgin, 1975 This was a pleasant listen, but the highlights definitely bookend the album. I found that a lot of what I love about The Byrds isn’t present here, such as the beautiful vocal harmonies. However, there was still nothing bad about this and I did enjoy it. I’m not sure I’ll be rushing back to listen again, but it made for a pleasant album to have on while studying.

Enjoyed this one. Old country sound, kinda like John Denver. Didn’t know much about Gene or the Byrds before listening
This also gave me genre whiplash, thats cool
Gentle Americana acoustic
'For A Spanish Guitar' was an insanely beautiful song, wish I could give such high praise to the rest of the songs here. It's some country-tinged singer-songwriter music that is very pleasant to listen to, but will definitely take more listens to really sink in and grow deeper feelings. Worth a listen though. Hard to pick anything standing out from a single listen other than the song i already mentioned.
This album was okay, mostly fairly bland, but there were some solid tracks on it, like Winter In. But overall, not really impressive.
It's alright. Way better than I expected but still just alright. The main issue here is that it's just repetitive. The hooks are good, the production value is outstanding, the performances are wonderful. But every song could be easily confused for the one before it. In a mix, though, these songs are all solid. Nothing to hate here. But also nothing much to love, unfortunately.
Really great folk rock. The cover is absolutely striking. It hits a nice mix of melancholy and beauty. It didn't blow me away or anything but I enjoyed it.
I like
Not a bad album, with pretty strong songwriting. If I were in the mood for this brand of 70s folk rock, this would be a strong entry, though it's not entirely my style.
This is probably a rather lovely record if you're into that sort of thing and he has a nice voice. Apparently Bob Dylan called For A Spanish Guitar one of the finest songs ever written. Problem is, it's not my kind of thing. It never charted significantly outside of Holland. Is this really in the top 1001 albums of all time?
Not really my kind of thing. The kind of album where I fell off the end and into the Spotify recommends tracks and didn't even notice.
I don't know how many of these folky singer song writer albums there are on here but its becoming entirely too many. This one had a bit of a southern rock/country vibe to it with harmonicas and stuff which kind of helped but everything about this was bland and boring. The two covers on here were the best parts but this had to be the worst version of stand by me I've ever heard. If you're going to make low energy music you there HAS to be something else that carries it. Whether it lyrics or vocal work but this doesn't do anything. I'm tempted to give this a two because I'm getting so sick of these kinds of albums but if I put my bias aside I know that there is nothing entirely wrong with this album outside of the fact I just find this music absolutely boring. That being said this is a 2.5 for me that I'm rounding up to a 3.
Very pleasant, at time his voice is quite Dylanesque. Not much more I can say really. Got to be worth a 3.
Probably would benefit from another listen.
More sad cowboys?
5 stars for his voice but 1 star for all the harmonica.
Pleasant, accomplished, but not interesting or memorable
Pretty good, not spectacular. I see why all the modern alt country guys dig him.
I liked it. Really need to give it another listen to better assess it
Spanish guitar is the highlight. Like a Kirkland brand James Taylor or Cat Stevens
Pleasant country/soft rock/singer songwriter album from the ex-Byrds member, it has a lot of smooth songs on it.
Gets a little repetitive, but enjoyable all the way through.
Good classic country.
I certainly enjoyed listening to this with its lovely country/folk sound. I just can't really remember anything particular about it.
Some nice tunes here but for the most part I don't think I'll remember much about it.
Warm, melodic and bittersweet. A nice listen for a summer day, if not super memorable. I appreciate that Clark picked up the tempo at the end, which closes out the album nicely. Fave Songs: Tears of Rage, With Tomorrow, The Virgin, 1975, White Light
Meh. Kind of plain and boring. But it was not bad.
Smooth
Former Byrds-man that I've not previously heard of, doing his solo thing. It's not bad at all, he's got a great folksy style that works really well. The "Stand By Me" cover was interesting, though it's hard to even touch the original. I was really hoping I'd like this one more, it opened so strong but didn't quite pack or maintain a punch throughout. But it was decent, and unfortunately decent albums on a list like this is a bit of a problem. Favorite tracks: The Virgin, Because of You (Alternate), Opening Night. Album art: I was about to clown on this for just being a white light but it's cool, I'm guessing that's Gene sitting in front of the moon? It's very minimal, very simple cover, not very striking and wouldn't catch your eye from a distance, but up close it's pretty powerful. 3/5
Very pleasant for one of the few days I'm not pumping my body of the world's goodies. Bob Dylan vibes.
Not the most interesting, but then again, neither am I.
The original Byrd, apparently. Dylan-esque but fuller sound. Good but not my cup o tea
It took a number of listens until I could warm up to it - at first it felt bland but a lot more gold can be found after a bit of digging. At the same time it’s not going to be among any favourites - but it’s a good record - more so with a little more attention.
Pleasant enough
Pretty pleasant. The melancholy songs were the best, but nothing in particular really stuck out
Sounds good, but kinda boring
