Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Few good songs. Sounds like a country Bob Dylan.
Sounds somewhere between Gordon Lightfoot and Bob Dylan. I think it’s decent stuff, but I personally don’t love country and there’s a lot of country influence in this. I’m not a fan of the vocals - seems like he’s trying too hard. There’s nothing surprising or exciting to me about this album.
Meh, post hippy acoustic guitar nonsense.
Inoffensive dentist waiting room music.
I......don't really get this. It was nice? 2.5
There must have been at least 2000 albums more essential..
😴😴 2
You lost me at “classic country-influenced singer/songwriter album from the early '70s.”
A country album. I know no Gene Clark. Seems alright... Quite pleasant. Average.
Too slow, too sad.
Hard to find. Could be better.
Just another artist and album that has a little too much in similarity to the Bob Dylan-style folk rock, especially when they pull out the harmonica. This felt a little boring and uninspired, passable at best.
2.5 stars
2 stars. Not my style but not bad
småkoslig
Inoffensive album but not super exciting. Not terrible but probably not something I would listen to again. It doesn't stand out much from other folk albums of the time.
Looking at some of the other reviews on this I was worried what I was going to hear. I don't see the hate, but I also don't know anything else to say other than this is was kind of Meh. It was not bad, not great, just kind of filler.
A decent country album with some very solid songs. My favorite was "Stand By Me."
Oh cool a former Byrds member putting out a second rate Band album.
This did nothing for me other than a couple of nice harmonica and twangy guitar solos. I've heard better folk albums on this challenge, and I'm usually a certified folk hater. Not offensive or anything though.
To everyday I turn, turn, turn to yet another album that makes me wonder why I keep going.
A nice, quick, easy-to-listen-to album with nothing that is going to blow anyone away.
mid
Not a big country rock fan - and there's a bit too much harmonica. Was going to give it a 3 as its very listenable however deducting a point for the terrible stand by me cover.
A good folk/country album, that's all. It's by no means a must-listen-before-you-die album. Just another way to overvalue American culture, which is what this list does 90 percent of the time.
Samish part of the Byrds-like Canon. Nothing to memorable.
eh
not the worst thing ever, it sounds mid, but I don't exactly think this is one of the most important albums of all time. i put off listening to this for days and now have a giant backlog of other albums I need to review. best song: "with tomorrow" overall: 4/10

point0.
Pleasant but boring. Not my thing.
nothing exceptional here
Lovely voice but unfortunately a really bland record imo
This is much, much worse than the other Gene Clark album ("No Other") on this list. The main culprit? A despicably grinding harmonica sound that very well might be the most hateful sound I've ever heard. It's a shame, because his voice and songwriting are actually pretty good. 1.5/5.0: Bad
A better version of Bob Dylan, but still not doing it for me. Dope album cover though.
Boring.
Too much jangle and not enough rhythm. No thank you
Not sure why this album made the cut. The lyrics were ok and the melodies were basic. If I hear another harmonica again I'm going to be sick
This is an album of music songs. They are not offensive…. or interesting. Why is it here?
Music to go "ehhhhh" to.
Fine music
Not dreadful, but not even one of the top 1001 folk rock albums of the early 70s (of which this app has shown us many).
Oh look, another miscellaneous, boring and unremarkable 70s folk/rock album
Sounds like most country albums to me
'With Tomorrow' is lovely, this feels like a good reading album Listening whilst its raining outside...'Where My Love Lies Asleep' is lovely
This sort of drifted by without leaving an impression. I listened a couple of times but couldn’t connect with any of it.
I really dislike this style of music anyway. Country twanged folk. But I really truly tried to be objective, and gave it a listen all the way through. It actually made me like it less. The only thing that makes this genre of music. Wes is when it has self- indulgent lyrics. Wich this has throughout. After hearing the first song, I decided I would give it a three-star neutral review just so I wouldn't unfairly move the needle based on personal taste. But after giving it a true lesson, it's two stars. Also, it's way too long. 14 songs is probably two times too many
Easy to listen, fairly melodic
who cares
Fine, nice enough but nothing I will remember. I think the best track was the titular White Light. But again I’ve forgotten it already. But I think that’s okay too. (2.5 stars)
mmm don't really care about this one Will I listen to again: 0%
Sounds a lot like bob Dylan.
Background harmonica. 3/10
Critically and commercial successful in the Netherlands. What are they smoking?
Why did you have to do that to stand by me?
Not american enough to like country, hes also not dylan so
" It only achieved commercial success in the Netherlands" makes sense it flopped everywhere else
I get why this didn’t sell, and don’t understand why it’s in the list. It’s just bad Dylan.
Well, this guy is a Bob Dylan clone, isn't he?
I feel like this is on this list pretty exclusively because Gene is a former Byrd. The music itself is fine. It didn't have a major impact on release, and I don't think it's made a major impact on the music world since its release. It's not bad, just fine. There is also just no variation in style/sound, and I'm starting to fall asleep listening to this only halfway through. Also, holy wow, "Stand By Me" is bad. In total: boring, skip it. Favorite Song(s): With Tomorrow (but all the songs are really the same, so pick any of them, really)
Meh 🫤
Not a fan. 2/5
It’s not for me. Great singer songwriter but he doesn’t grab my ear.
Nice voice. Reminds me of John Denver or Jim Croce, except more boring, and not as good. Maybe more like my summer camp counselor from the early 70's. Hip at the time, but sleepy time now.
This is pretty and all, but mostly unremarkable.
I’m sure there’s some that love this laidback style but lot for me.
I'm sorry but I can't deal no more with those country/cowboy vibes with that harmonica and that guitar, the kind of song you sing around a fire camp, I can't stand with that anymore that's way too much I think that the person behind that website is a huge country vibe ! Even if I loved "With Tomorrow" that was so smooth and enjoyable and then the banjo and harmonica and all their friends come back and that's terribleeeeee. But then a classic appear with "Stand By Me" I have to admit it was enjoyable, that's good one as well.
BO  RING  BO  RING  Actually it's the better sounding kind of country, not that bad. Good voice
It was good background music, I really couldn’t get into it
This is like if paint drying was an album. The least interesting country album I’ve ever heard.
I could have done without this. That's fifty one minutes and twenty one seconds of my life I'll never retrieve. How do you fuck up "Stand by Me"? Puzzled as to how this makes the list. But I guess it might make a good soundtrack to a suicide. 2
I don't think I needed to hear this before I died. There was nothing special about this.
he looks like a witch on a broom on the cover
It's not the best work on the planet, but it has a cohesion that manages to tie the album together well but unfortunately doesn't keep the listener hooked. At a certain point, it borders on boring, but you can finish the album without hating it. A little meh for my personal taste.
Super chill and folky but unmemorable
Skipping
Sorta…nothing…Gene Clark’s No Other is way better I think because he had like…a band. And production, this is just sorta fine?
Please just put down the harmonica Gene. A bunch of the other criticisms people have are valid too, but I just really don’t like all of the harmonica in this album.
Sounds like one big song, broken up by a brief cover.
🤷♀️. This was a big shrug. Acoustic singer-songwriter stuff that seemed rather one note. Didn’t hate it but after listening I remember none of it other than one cover.
Gene have been been a good song writer but I’m not a fan of his singing or music writing abilities. There really wasn’t a standout and his take on Stand by Me was not good.
Meh, not my genre
So we know for certain that at least one (1) person in the Netherlands has bought this album. Maybe even listened to it... Well, yes, when you put it that way, it certainly explains why it's on the "albums everyone should listen to" list.
oh good, MORE byrds. i hadn't yet gotten my fill from their four albums i've already had (plus the flying burrito brothers and crosby stills and nash if you count those). there are more goddamn byrds in this list than there are grackles at the olmos HEB in san antonio on a late weekend afternoon (not really, that's impossible, but my fellow central texans know what i'm talkin about) anyway yeah this was fine. underwhelming. very 2.5 stars-coded. i'm currently listening to much better albums and will likely never come back to this one, so i'm rounding down. don't like it gene? should've made better music, sorry. favorites: with tomorrow, for a spanish guitar
Meh no really for me. Nice background music I suppose.
This was warm and wholesome and like a Bob Dylan lite. It doesn't do much for me but was pleasant none the less. A suprise inclusion jn the list being that it doesnt challenge much, have any hits or any cultural impact, but not bad.
Bit too country at times. I preferred no other
Quite the shame that that the music itself isn't as great as the album cover, because that artwork is absolutely killer. The music itself is just kind of meh unfortunately.
I tried and bailed. Should have stayed with the Byrds,
Not a bad album, but nothing really stood out to me. It's a light listen, songs sound mostly the same. The production is nice, the vocals and acoustic guitar sound rich and prominent. Would give it 2.5 if I could.
Well this record was definitely on. All nicely played, performed and sang. Nothing to dislike, nothing hooked me either really. Might take a few listens to click with me, but unfortunately for it, it's not going to get them.
Nothing like some "country rock" to make you appreciate all the other genres, you know? This guy (from the Byrds, previously) has a little bit of a Bob Dylan warble. Unfortunately he also has those twangy guitars. He died in his 40s, too. What a downer this list is! Actually, these songs are not unpleasant to listen to - nice and mellow. But they are also boring. Even 'Stand By Me' is like, 200% worse here. Highlights: 'One in a Hundred' (American Pie-esque)
The Byrds post David Crosby were already as bland as psychedelic music can be, and Gene was the most bland member of the band. The audio equivalent of watching beige paint dry
At least the subject matter's more savoury than the last album I reviewed. I ain't going near any of Serge Gainsbourg's work again. Unfortunately, "White Light" is quite dull. None of the songs were memorable; they sounded nice at least. I guess I had a bad week this time. 2 stars for "White Light".
• 2/5 • exceptionally well executed unexceptional folk rock • wild that it went #1 in Holland and never caught on anywhere else - what’s with the Dutch?
Mellow country vibes, not really my thing.
It's definitely an album. I will most likely forget about it in three hours' time. Not really sure why it made the cut for this "1001 albums to listen to before you die". Would have been interesting to see the motivation given the wikipedia article stating that it wasn't a very successful album (outside of Netherlands).
For the love of God stop giving me Gene Clark albums
It’s fine but I cannot imagine a world in which this was in the top 10,000 albums, let alone the top 1,000
Ah the seventies, when everybasshile with a guitar got a solo album. Look, solo efforts almost always suck and this is no different. Manassas got some points for originality, but this? I mean the Byrds? Cmon. A fine band with no standout talent, and no solo records please
Originally thought this was boring and not for me, but I did start to warm to this slightly this morning. I liked "Because Of You" and "One In A Hundred" so far. Pretty light hearted, lullaby like music with guitar and some harmonica. "Where My Love Lies Asleep" is a very soothing, sleepy like old time cowboy music. Not really in the mood for this today and musically it's not my favorite but I'll go with an overall 2. I skipped the last couple of tracks.
It's ok. Would not bother with again
Boring. Reminds me very much of Tom Petty’s boring 90s work. “For a Spanish guitar” on a steel string…
It’s not that it was unpleasant, but somehow just completely unremarkable. Even as I was listening, I was almost impressed by how little of an impression it was leaving on me. A 2 feels a little harsh, maybe, but that’s what it gets for being so boring.
Listened to half the album. Absolutely not feeling it. Listened to the second half later- And maybe it was my mood - still not good, but I didn’t feel the need to turn it off again. Rounding up to a 2
There were many interesting albums that spawned from The Byrds-iverse...however, this was't one of them
Pleasant enough, though I’m not sure it stands out or shines among the other albums of its era. It’s pretty standard fair with some pretty songs in there.
Dylanesque country/folk
An ok album, but by no means essential listening.
Ok, but not one of the 1001 best albums imo.
# Album Name: White Light # Artist: Gene Clark # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Americana country album which is pretty underwhelming. It was OK at best but pretty boring as its not really my style # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
Not impressed. Not sure I want to delve deeper into anything he's done, but may give a listen to see if it ever got better.
Nice easy listening album. Never really heard of this guy, but he sounds like he could tour with Paul Simon.
Almost subversive levels of MOR. Wouldn't offend me as background music but serves no other purpose
to expand on the #1 comment, this is the album that made me think that maybe there aren't 1001 english spoken albums worth listening to.
Pretty "meh". No songs really stand out for me. I didn't hate it, but found it to be pretty boring. Something you might hear being played in a coffee shop in a small town or something. To be honest, it wasn't vibing with my mood today and I couldn't even finish it.
Dollar store Bob Dylan. Not necessarily bad, just kinda boring.
Okay album.
Arrangements very country. Not a great or evocative voice. Unmemorable songs. Next!
Solid ol’ folk music. Timeless and a true gem when done right! Sadly, this played like one long ass song with some beat switches. Was a great nap on the train tho
Kinda chill but really boring
There’s a “one in a hundred” chance I listen to this album again. Nice music, band tight af, Gene’s voice muy bueno, but lord what a snoozefest. Dylan cover’s like Tears of Moderate Annoyance. I don’t believe Gene, is the problem. I’m not buying it.
This type of music is right in my wheelhouse and I was still bored.
Man, this guy REALLY wishes he was Bob Dylan
A little repetitive, but I like the harmonica a lot.
It's just another country/folk/blues knockoff of Dylan. Maybe technical ok, it's just boring.
Gene, not familiar with ur game and I am still not.
I guess it's fine, but it's just another white boomer playing blues-/roots-rock. Easily forgettable.
This is exactly the type of folksy-Americana I can't stand. I respect the artistry and talent, but just find it totally unenjoyable.
So so! Very dated.
**Shocking News**: the original Bob Dylan knockoff made solo albums that sound like store-brand Dylan records. Unfortunately, without a band behind him to make those Dylan rips special, his solo material falls mostly flat, even when there’s a couple decently composed songs (though he still never comes close to his idol, or even his former band’s glory days).
I listened to it, and forgot to write any notes while listening. Now, a day later, I basically don't remember any of the album, other than it wasn't particularly offensive. I feel like that speaks of the quality, all on its own.
2 just cos it's not completely terrible
Damn the dude from the Byrds got a solo album on this list? Yeah no reason this was essential. It said it did poorly in the US. Yeah because like 100 other people could make this album. Nothing special.
Best Song: With Tomorrow. There is a haunting quality to this track, and the repetitive rhyming really works here. Worst Song: Opening Day. I was fully done with the album by this point. Overall: Not wholly unpleasant, but the entire album does end up blurring into relatively monotonous string. I felt that I'd internalized the vibe of the album before it was half over, but I was left to listen to the rest.
Ugh. More country. Not for me
Rant Time >:( A couple days ago, in some random folk review I made a snide remake about how the Byrds feel over represented in this list with 5 disappointing albums, but to my surprise THEY HAVE SOLO ALBUMS TOO!!!! I had to google the members of the band to make sure others don't have solo albums too. Of course Crosby went on to do stuff so that makes sense he has 3, but Gene Clark (who never charted) has 2, and Chris Hillman has 1. THAT'S 11 BYRDS RELATED ALBUMS!!!! WHY?!?! Unless I am missing some, that's 1 less than the Beatles and its members. No one on earth can argue that the Byrds are even close to as important to the Beatles, I couldn't have even named a Byrds' song before this list. It really is quite annoying how a lot of these early bands feel like they get 5 or 6 albums and then when you get to the 80's and beyond you will be lucky if a great band gets 2. When I read that this dude was a member of the Byrds I made such a loud groan my wife thought I got hurt. The Byrds are quickly becoming my arch nemesis on this list. Also maybe if the quote "Like all of his post-Byrds records, it did very poorly on the US charts." Takes up 1/5 of the review and is one of the only things worth mentioning, this album isn't worth being on this list. Ok, I guess I have to actually listen and talk about the album. First off, Gene Clark is not a very good singer. The first two songs are ok, a little bland, but ok. But the title track is awful and felt like double its length. Because of You starts off nice, but it really drags on and doesn't really evolve. The rest of the songs are pretty boring, and also don't really go anywhere. I try to save 1's for albums I think are unlistenable, or that I absolutely hate. Despite how much I complained, I don't think this is unlistenable (It is completely unnecessary and bland). very very low 2
Pretty slooooooooooooow and boring folky shit
This is the third Byrds-related record in my review rotation. White Light leans too far into country tropes and folk genre cliches for my taste. It's not poorly executed, some of the songs are pleasant, it's just terribly boring. Maybe in 1971 you could grab a guitar and sing a song nicely on record and fans of your earlier work would be happy. And, that's just it, this record feels more like an appeal to existing fans than an artistic achievement. The cover of Stand By Me is a good example of how pedestrian the whole album sounds now. It's hard to hear how this record justifies itself as one of the 1001 albums you must hear before you die.
I found gene Clark’s “White Light” to be a far, far, far, far, far less talented knock-off of a Neil Young/Bob Dylan artist mash-up… Nothing really compelling about these tracks – though several are saved by pretty decent harmonica work – and I have a weakness for the strategic use of good harmonica (i.e. think Neil Young & Jimmy Buffett to name a few…). Usually note a couple of tracks that stood out for me, but these all just sort of ran together for me… Will give it a 2 due to the decent harmonica, and as well as decent audio quality for 1970… Highly forgettable though…
The second half of this was better than the first half, but I was bored through the entire thing. Wannabe Bob Dylan is all I heard.
not for me
If you add the words, “white heat,“ to the title you get an excellent album and song from the Velvet Underground. That stands in stark contrast to this room temperature pile of mediocrity.
the stand by me cover is so random
I have to be honest. I have not received any enjoyment from the country rock tinged singer/songwriter movement of the 1970s. Cannot stand any of them really.
Meh. Kind of diet Dylan
Innoffensive but nothing to write home about. There are a lot of much better singer-songwriters out there.
Two Gene Clark albums. Who does this list think he is? Dylan he is not. Meh. I was feeling the first album of his, but the second didn't move me. Perhaps subsequent listens may prove rewarding. we shall see if I consider it.
Not a lot to say here
Gross. This was lame. Why does he have two dorky first names for his name. Lol. Ok Gene.
Just so dull and uninspiring. Not the worst thing ever, but I don't want to listen to it anymore.
Nice but not striking me as outstanding for tunes, innovation or vibes.
Dylan lite, with a lot of stereotypical themes and rhymes
There's nothing this guy's doing that Bob Dylan isn't doing better
Two stars because I liked two songs here. Otherwise it would have been only one.
Am I missing something? Already got No Other, which the Wikipedia article said everyone thought sucked but it eventually came to be well regarded. This one says everyone thought it sucked (except the Netherlands) and has not since gained any appreciation. How do some of these albums make this list?
This didn't leave much of an impression. It's a bit overly reliant on harmonica to create interest in every song, and all the songs blur into sameness. Mid
Not a fan of this genre. Gordon Lightfoot and the like. Just not my bag.
Listened to the original 9 track release. Pretty boring Bob Dylan-inspired stuff. Not very interesting at all to me. Best track: 1975
zzz..... 2 stjerner
Wasn't sure what to make of this. Can hear that it probably influenced a lot of music from that era, but mainly stuff I am not that into: Dylan, Byrds / Gram Parsons, etc. Kind of passed me by.
The Byrds were good until now, and I understood that Gene Clark was the guy behind them, but this album is very annoying and never-ending. "For A Spanish Guitar" is a good highlight, but it doesn't save the album.
Eh... kind of boring. Okay for chill background music, but nothing special.
98/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑
Nice folk-rock but nothing rememberable. 2,5
01) The Virgin - 7,0 02) With Tomorrow - 6,0 03) White Light - 5,0 04) Because of You - 5,0 05) One in a Hundred - 5,0 06) For a Spanish Guitar - 5,0 07) Where My Love Lies Asleep - 4,5 08) Tears of Rage - 5,0 09) 1975 - 5,5 TOTAL: 5,33 (53/100) Current ranking: 166/185 Sounds like a Bob Dylan wannabe to me. The album was popular only in the Netherlands. How random. I don't really know how it deserved to be on this list, a boring and uninspiring country folk album.
Came to the reviews to see why this would be on the 1001 list… and most others don’t know either. Not bad, but certainly reeks of someone leaving a group for a solo career, and producing this average material. 2,2/5
Meh
Head towards the White Light children. Head towards the light.
Vaya rollazo.
2.5
The most interesting thing about this is that the lead singer was in a slightly less boring group.
Bit of a snoozefest
Was a 3 until I got to the worst cover of “Stand by me” I’ve ever heard
2.5 stars. not sure how often id listen but it wasn't bad
Others did this better
country, 1971 -> 2
A very meh album overall. Not surprising it wasn't a hit anywhere but the Netherlands. Tears Of Rage is the best song on by far, and that's to be expected since it's a Dylan song. The rest? Forgettable.
Nice music. Lovely music. Boring music... Another one for the category of "nothing music"
Meh
kind of generic
It's boring, unremarkable folk albums like this that make this list hard to plod through at times.
En ihan ymmärrä tätä. Hyvin kiteyttää mies ja kitara -genren, toki sliipattuja biisejä. Niin sliipattuja, etten oikein pääse pintaa syvemmälle.
Honestly this record felt kind of boring to me. I'm not sure why it made it on this list. It feels like a copycat Bob Dylan or a John Prine, or Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. It just didn't really do it for me.
Really quite boring. Apparantly this was big in Holland, I'm not sure what they were smoki...oh wait.
Marginally better than that Byrds album I had to trudge through, but it's close.
Godgloeiende wat is dit saai zeg. Abnormaal.
I love singer songwriters, especially of this era. There are things to like about this album. I do like Clark's almost idiotically simple approach to the music. The instrumentation is minimal and makes for a great dinner party or coffeehouse vibe. But ultimately, it's just as vapid as it sounds. The poetry is middling. The Tears of Rage cover just makes me want to listen to Dylan or The Band. That's ultimately the problem. Gene Clark is just DULL. His voice is timid, his guitar playing is both too proficient to be raw and too sloppy to be the focus. His orchestration feels simple because he's simple but it's like he's trying to hide from it.
A little boring...
I went into this completely blind. I’d never really listened to Gene Clark before — then realised he was in The Byrds. And honestly, at this point in the challenge, it feels like there are far too many Byrds-related albums on the list. This one just didn’t grab me. It feels very samey throughout — mid-tempo, introspective, and drifting along without much variation. I kept waiting for something to lift it, but it never really arrived. For me, it lacks urgency and bite. It leans heavily into that earnest, rootsy singer-songwriter territory. At times it feels like a stripped-back, softer blueprint for artists who would come later — but without the dynamism. Being a huge Springsteen fan, I couldn’t help thinking this felt like a poor man’s version of that heartland storytelling — similar themes, but without the punch or the hooks. Favourite tracks: “With Tomorrow” and “White Light” stand out. There’s a bit more melody and shape to these, and they’re the reason this scrapes a 2/5 rather than lower. Least favourite: If I’m honest, most of the rest of the album blends into one long, indistinct listen. Album artwork: Pretty average, nothing especially striking or memorable. Overall, it’s not terrible, just dull. And that’s worse. It’s another one ticked off the list, but not one I’ll be returning to.
Nice lyrics but limited in singing. Just a bit too bland and nice. I did enjoy For A Spanish Guitar, but the rest of the album is inoffensively bland.
At the start of this I thought it was ok, but god it's so boring. Sorry Gene. It sounds well put together and his voice is nice but it's so forgettable. The cover of stand by me was really bad too save annoyed me
Have had three (four including Morrissey) solo male artists all of varying quality. Devendra Banhart was insufferable, Bill Callahan was a four star serenade and Gene Clark was nothing to right home about.
"White Light" is the second solo album by Gene Clark, former member of The Byrds. This folk rock singer-songwriter performed poorly on US charts as a solo artist. While not outright bad, this album is rather boring and seemingly uninspired.
meh
Another background music album. Very pleasant, but nothing jumped out at me. Probably good for a homework playlist or something. I feel like I must be missing context for these albums. But hey, this is 1001 Albums - you gotta come hard.
I’d play this album for background music but actively listening to it is not for me. There was more than once that I was hoping for a pickup in the tempo or a key change because I thought that’s what the song and album needed, but it never came. This is one of those albums that I question why it’s on the list. It’s not bad music by any means, I just don’t see the significance right away. I was sitting on a three, but the cover of Stand By Me was not it, and frankly why even try to cover that masterpiece? The Opening Day/Winter In combo was also trippy.
Not sure why this is on the list. It doesn't feel innovative or inspiring. Wikipedia is saying that this was not well received in the the US, but did great in the Netherlands. I guess that means we'll be seeing a Drake Bell album on here do to his success in Mexico? Nothing wrong with the album. Just boring. I take back my previous statement. There is something wrong with this album. It's too long.
- slow and long not a recipe for something that Trevor likes - Yeah not too into this but I appreciate the talent
- feels like classic 70s singer-songwriter - nothing about it really stands out to me
Early folk rock? Not bad, not really anything stand out either
C'était long et plate en tabarnak.
This certainly is a guy with a guitar.
Folk music. Sounds like Bob Dylan.
Generic and boring album, nothing interesting at all. Probably just a waste of time.
A bit like Bob Dylan... but worse.
Alright, just a bit bland and boring.
Easy listening. Fairly uninteresting. The Bob Dylan harmonica is tough to listen to.
beetje Amerikaans boer
I prefer Glen Campbell's style
Solid jams with words that aren’t as deep.
Ganske uinteressant.
schnarchig
fine
Very calming. Quite forgettable though.
Bastante aburrido.
I must have heard Gene before but really can’t remember. This is a bit too country and middle of road for me. Feels like the kind of thing that would really have been on the radio in the US in the early 70s rather than the psychedelic rock and soul stuff that younger people like me revere from that era. Inoffensive but kind of like Nilsson just not my sort of thing. Gave up at “Stand by Me”. Yuck.
Boring.
Brutally dull. 70s singer/songwriter cliche.
Nice voice and melodies but a bit yo slow and folksy for me
Kinda boring tbh, 2/5
An average folk rock/country album, containing a bunch of poetic songs. Nothing to write home about in my opinion, pretty bland and almost put me to sleep. Best: For a Spanish Guitar Worst: The Virgin Note: Spotify had the bonus tracks, I only listened to the original 9 songs.
Wasn’t completely horrible. But I’d rather not listen again given the choice. Had maybe one or two songs that were ok. Never was a Byrds fan, and this follows suit.
A bit dull and dreary.
At its best, folk music binds people together in communal union through the shared experience of the trials and tribulations of life, haunted by the spectre of the unknown. On White Light's titular track, Gene Clark reaches for this ideal, but his lyrics fail him. A lack of clarity permeates the rest of the record. Ill-defined boundaries leave Clark's ideas and melodies shapeless and formless; his intentions latch onto the closest floating concepts, before falling to the ground and pooling themselves into inconsequential puddles.
Well this has all the things going for it, doesn't it? Folk, singer/songwriter - 🤮 Country - 🤮 Dylan cover - 🤮 Boring, uninspiring, but thankfully short. 👍
+Spanish Guitar
This was just ok.
Listened to most of it, got the point. A blunt one that’s not one I’m interested in further.
I managed to get about halfway through before switching it off. I can understand that for fans of this genre it probably has significance, but it's not for me.
Pleasant, folky
But boring. Not me
Allemachtig! Gene!
Hated it, slow, dull, musically totally uninteresting. It was a chore to listen to this and I was glad when I got to the end. If I was listening to this on a record I would be constantly checking I was playing it at the right speed, as it sounds slowed down. It's like Bob Dylan if he had a stroke and was in recovery from some serious throat affliction. Some of the songs sound like he has his testicles in a vice, it's a strange, unnatural sound. It was actually too dull to even deserve a 1-star rating, so I decided on a 2. It was also mercifully short. Spotify had a whole load of "bonus" tracks, but I didn't want to punish myself, so I skipped them. This album made me want to go and eat some cheese, which I can only assume is due to the Dylanesque sound, as Bob Dylan always sounds like he's singing about cheese to my ears.
There are too many byrds albums on the list. No need for a solo album too.
Nothing special.
It’s okay I guess a bit bob dylan esque which makes sense from someone that was in the byrds, but this is so not worth the list we already have a tonne of byrds albums so to have a byrds related album is just a waste of space 2/5
Yeah, bit boring, innit?
Yeah it’s nice enough, probably could’ve died without hearing it.
5/10 boring country fold overall.
Nothing wrong with it. Just boring
A bit slow and 'samey'
Just totally bland and banal. Not awful but won’t ever think about it again.
Vaya rollazo.
It's a boring kind of nice... I am sure that if I listened to it enough I would like it, but so far.... I'm just not feeling it. 2.5
I think I need a night light for this one. Pretty much a snoozer from start to finish with poor knock offs of classic Dylan songs.
White Light/White Noise
Exactly how I'd expect the solo album of one of the Byrds to sound. Pleasant enough, but not the most exciting and the Bob Dylan impression vocals are a bit cringe. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: The Virgin Date listened: 25/06/23
Just straight up kind of boring. Nothing stands out here really. Not bad just not memorable. Didn’t realize how many of these guys were floating around in the 60s and 70s.
Vaya rollazo.
Mixed bag. Enjoyed a couple of Dylanesque tracks. Didn't enjoy the more country / Paul Simonesque tracks. Inoffensive, but no desire to listen again.
It's not that it's bad. Just that it's boring
if I get really into the Byrd's then this will be higher on the list and worth a revisit. right now it feels kind of slow and plodding.
Enjoyable album to listen to while patching holes in walls but nothing really stood out beyond the stand by me cover
Singer-songwriter stuff from the early 70s. Yes, it is exactly how it sounds: folky with some country vibe, a bit self-important and utterly uninteresting. *sigh* 2/5
Mostly dull
A bit Dylan-y, not bad but not a personal favorite. I guess I don’t have much love for the harmonica. The standout on this album was Tears of Rage for me, it just hit me right where the other tracks sort of felt so background.
This was pretty nothing to me. Inoffensive, but nothing memorable. My favourite song was One in a Hundred.
Quite country. Nice slow listen. Didn't capture my attention.
Not gonna lie, this one was pretty fucking boring. The musical chops are there, but my attention isn’t.
Generic hippie guitar strumming.
Dollar-store country stylings by a guy with a generic voice and nothing new to tell us. Sort of stuff you hear on a nondescript radio station passing through without leaving a lasting impression.
This was really boring, Dylan-lite. Voice isn't great, lyrics aren't great, music is not interesting in any way. All sounds very same-y, not unpleasant, just dull, 2/5.
Just boring
was kinda meh, real inoffensive hick music got tired of the harmonica real fast
not much going for it in terms of personal interest. soft, slow and mellow. probably a 2.5
Voice reminded me of James Taylor, song style reminded me of Neil Young. A bit country, a bit folk rock, it wasn't bad overall. It wasn't very memorable. The cover of "stand by me" was a surprise, but the original was better.
Not sure why this made the list. Nothing remarkable.
The inoffensiveness is offensive
Couldn't get into it. Meh
Kind of a snoozefest. Nothing stuck out to me on this one
Pleasant enough, but nothing grips me at all. I'd have preferred to listen to another ex-Byrd: David Crosby who just died in the week.
Not bad
Found this to be a pretty boring album unfortunately
Heard this before, hoping it would be of similar quality to "No Other". Unfortunately more like a 2nd-rate Dylan album. Starting to doubt the compiler of this list's definition of "essential"..
Somehow the album overall does not really have my attention. All the tracks seems flat / feels the same, resulting in a feeling of repetition. Favorite track, if I really have to choose, is probably “For a Spanish Guitar”. I dont see myself revisiting this album, at least for now (probably ever).
Meni mukavasti huomaamatta ohi. Ei tartuntapintaa omaan makuun.
Nmjaa
what the fuck bob
gaap
