Reviews (page 8 of 8)

nothing special at all.

I think they can play their instruments somewhat. They sound like the opposite of a proper jammy ensemble, where we get together and explore and try to find musical ideas to turn into music. These guys seem to proactively avoid discovering anything musical. 60 minutes of no melody; it's perverse. Every song has one or two extra endings in the middle. Sometimes you're kind of getting used to it, maybe not actually listening, some of the playing is OK, and then the godforsaken singer comes back and it's death. Lose the singer, and all the "words", including the titles, watch a few YouTube songwriting videos, listen to some Tortoise, then maybe? No, it's hopeless.

So weird

Bringing all the flaws and failures of prog rock into the 21st century, and even adding some adolescent metal into the mix. Doing that prog think of being briefly listenable, then deliberately overcomplicating things. Doing that metal thing of being overwrought. And god, it's just exhausting over an hour.

My bad - I didn’t realize I was supposed to be stoned off my ass to listen to this.

Arctic Monkeys meets All American Rejects, and yes I mean that as an insult.

definition of the music i detest

Trashy, screamy and disharmonic - no obe song that i could nearly like..

Not a fan

Really not good. Spastic and chaotic without a clear purpose.

I’ve been trying to listen to this album for over a week

Whoof!

i couldn't get through this, this music was not made for me

not for me

Nope. I got to track 3 before I gave in.

Progressive Rock Bank! More music in the trashy genre. Not for me.

Not good. Worst Song: This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed Best Song: Added to Liked Songs:

This don't work for me. Too much something. The music didn't feel good to listen to. I was very uncomfortable

This was such a horrible listen I’m actually upset that someone decided this was a worthy album to be included. I hated listening to this so much that I put the volume on low. Was not worth my time.

Stop giving me this trash 🛑

Noise for the sake of noise.

What if prog-rock and punk were fused together? What if the best parts of At the Drive In reunited and made a better band? What if theatrical vocal performances and virtuosic guitar paid a musical tribute to a fallen band member? What if there was an album that it's lyrics were so abstract and it's album art was so provocative, that music critics wanked so hard that they became hypnotized and convinced themselves that this record wasn't a steaming pile of self indulgent dogshit? Full disclosure, I was into this band's second album for a minute in my early twenties. If I had a time machine, I'd go back, slap my former self in the dick, and hand him copies of The Yes Album and In The Court of the Crimson King.

Thought I would enjoy this but really didn't, found it incredibly overblown with the songs having a lack of variety or spaces to allow the music to breathe, just annoying by the end and the vocals really don't help with that.

Wow, I just cannot get past minute 10.

This is just noises. Gross.

There are bits that are worthwhile but I can’t deal with the up and down tempo and up and down loudness. It feels all over the place for me

So pretentious, and trying so hard to be bigger-than-life, they end up being nothing at all. Miserable experience. There's a billion better prog albums.

Come on man - why you got me listening to this shit?

Not for me 1/5

I don't know what that was, but it got no love from my brain waves. Byeeeee.

not my bag

No songs hooked me

Horrible

Didn’t get last song 2

Here’s another singer whose voice exists in that super annoying, whiny upper range. There is nothing pleasant about it. Nails on chalkboard. Musically it’s a bit frantic and lost, like an intense anxiety attack. I will never listen to this again.

I skipped a buncha songs toward the end. The first few i remember kinda enjoying, but I dont think the album is for me on the whole. 1 star.

WTF is this?! Frantic guitars, weird vocals, just things thrown in there for "depth". Also, super long songs that suck. 1/5

I suspect this album will be quite divisive. For me, not my cup of tea.

I think I listened to it. But I forget. 1/5

5/10 Highlights Roulette Dares

Definitivamente no es mi estilo de música

Tedious, self-indulgent wankfest. Far too long. Dislike. A lot.

Kuin opettelisi Pokemon-korttien aikuisille täysin käsittämättömiä sääntöjä. Hetken mielenkiinto lopahtaa kokonaisuuden arbiträäriin teknisyyteen. 1,5

not for me

Sucked

More incomprehensible noise. Some good guitar work in there, but not enough to help this album. Songs are way too long. Many of them have some good parts, but its mixed into a lot of bad. This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed was going pretty good, and then the very ending they decide to just throw their drums down the stairs or something. Best song: This Apparatus Must Be Unearthed

gave me a headach

In my mind: just noise.

This album seemed terrible to me. Like Pink Floyd on steroids. Everything was unnecessarily showy, the lyrics were self important and bookish. Like Prog rock with only polish.

Did not enjoy this sound experience.

No thanks

One thing that really annoys me (and I mean really annoys me) with modern music is how they sing in a manner under a sludge of sound that I can barely make out any of the words. If I can't hear the lyrics, then what's the f-ing point of the song. So instant relegation to 1 from me. Ps music actually quite decent guitar rock

Really bad

I listened but I won't put myself through that again. Definitely won't be adding this to my playlist. Utter rubbish and undeserving of a place in this list

Not for me

Sorry, lead singer’s voice makes my ears bleed and always has

Gave me a headache :(

Pretentiöst dravel.

Not into any of the tracks at all. 1/5

I knew nothing about this band. Reading the album name and track listing, I thought it would be, I don't know... smarter?

Hysterisch, hektisch, mathematisch - nicht mein Fall.

Zero redeemable qualities.

Really just blends with all other metal. Wasnt a fan but maybe it's just the genre

Unnecessarily busy; overly produced. No hooks, nothing to grab onto.

This is a bunch of weird gay bullshit.

Is this even music lol

Un ruido asqueroso.

Good music, but holy shit I can't stand the singer for a goddamn second. I would like this with any other vocalist.

Not listenable

I am not a fan at all of the Mars Volta

After listening to this album, I want to walk up to each of the band members, also them in the face and tell them to cull the fuck out.

this album is so steeped in high frequencies and treble that i can see no way it can't be fatiguing to your ears. modern prog rock is for some people but i am not one of them.

Prog rock, not my taste

This is really not for me. It makes me feel very stressed for some reason.

Oh god. This is way more stressful than I need today. It’s probably “good” but I had to turn it off- no way would I last an hour of this.

I try to be open with music but I struggle to understand why, or frankly even how, someone creates something like this. It felt like a bad trip. I’m sure these guys had some grandiose vision and it all makes sense to them but I detested this album and never want to hear it, or its stupid song titles, again.

What a mish-mash of unpleasantness. DNF.

I'm more convinced than ever this is the emperor's new clothes. Unnecessarily proggy to the point it distracts from the songs, and the lyrics read like the ramblings of a drunk horse

Not a very interesting album. Basically sounded like the same song for an hour besides a little bit difference in Cicatriz Esp and Drunkship of Lanterns. Not bad music, just not really my taste and not very much going on. The names of the songs are very cool however.

Did not like, annoying rock

Make it stop....PLEASE!!!! 1.5 stars

It’s just noise.

As many have noted, the lyrics meaning is just incomprehensible (as a non-native english speaker I found myself questioning sometimes if what I was listening was actually english). Other than that, the music is just not interesting, sometimes repetitive, like there's not many ideas coming out from the band and they can only achieve the sound they're proposing at a surface level.

Not on Apple Music 🤷‍♂️

First time of listening, sounds like early 21st Century Faux 70's Prog Rock to me. Intellectual navel gazing, with their backs to the audience. Or am I just a biased old punk! Cedric Bixler-Zavala sounds like Jon Anderson in his Yes heyday. Clearly very good musicians, just wished they had chosen a different style. I can of course see the quality here just don't particularly like the music. Never really liked "Concept" Albums as they are usually more important to those writing/playing them than to those listening (Exceptions to the rule here both Tommy & Quadrophenia by The Who). Hard to pick a favourite track on this one but I suppose "Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt" is the most listenable although as always with Prog Rock it's length (8 mins 42 Secs) means it overstays it's welcome! Not on my list I am afraid.

Not a fan.

Another nope. This has been a weird week of music.

fucking sucks

Somehow not

boreeed

a few seconds of dreadful

Too frantic…not my style…like earlier prog rock(70’s/80’s)

Ew what was that I hated it. Horrible emo music. Listened on low volume just to get through it

Love a good active Bass part. I’m not sure the “concept” for this album is communicated clearly though. This is an interesting album but not very approachable for an unfamiliar listener.
