1 - not for me
No
Really annoying voice. Couldn't get through it
did not care for it, it insisted upon itself
i don't get fiona apple sry
A Grammy?????
Forced myself to listen to the full album for the sake of wanting to do it for all 1001 of them. It was a miserable experience. No way anyone is listening to this today without being forced too. This must be on the top of circulation for black ops torturing.
How have I not been listening to this ballsy ball.pf talent all my life?
Gosh, more Fiona Apple in my life please. They really don't make them like this anymore.
Sleep to dream 5/5 Sullen girl 5/5 Shadowboxer 5/5 Criminal 5/5 Slow like honey 4/5 The first taste 4.5/5 Never is a promise 5/5 The child is gone 4/5 Pale september 5/5 Carrion 5/5
I was not aware of Fiona Apple. This is not an album I would turn to frequently, and though there a lot of it is sultry jazz, this is not smooth listening. Nevertheless, Apple took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I really enjoyed some of the instrumentals, which ranged from simple piano, heavy trodding bass/drums, to the sliding strings. Tracks I enjoyed were Slow Like Honey, The Child Is Gone, Carrion
I feel fully vindicated by my 1 star rating last week. Here is a 19 yo wise beyond her years, and Fiona's optimism in the face of being hardened by past experiences is even more powerful knowing that she will continue to find herself in abusive relationships and continue to express positivity and optimism, with a healthy dose of female rage as well

Wonderful album look forward to Listening again. Love how it builds each song adding to a full musical statement.
This takes me back. Bought this album and listened to it regularly for a few years. Great debut.
Singer-Songwriter/Piano Rock Favorite Songs: Technically all of them, but I especially like Sleep to Dream, Shadowboxer, Criminal, The First Taste, Pale September, and Carrion Least Favorite Track: If I have to guess, it’ll probably be The child is Gone? I’m honestly really shocked about some of the reviews on the site here, and some of them, I can see but will just respectfully disagree. The one criticism about her voice, while I would be a hypocrite if I would say that you guys should’ve been a lot nicer about her voice…when I wasn’t a fan of Tom Waits voice, I think it’s really more so about personal tastes, and I honestly find her voice to be really great. However, some of the other reviews aren’t really all that great. For starters, here’s a quote from one of the reviews: “Singer has the feel of "oh I'm so hot, I get all the boys and I know it and I'm so bad" shut the fuck up honestly.” Okay, first of all, I cringed when this person said to ‘shut the fuck up honestly’, I really hope that they don’t actually say that to another person like that. It’s rude. Secondly, and most importantly, this is not about how she has all of the hot guys around, but rather a journey through a breakup. While she has this voice where she’s sounds sexy, I could also get the hint of either sadness, angst, or angry about her experience and how the guy in the song was feeling, too. Then there’s the whole thing about it feeling samey, to which I highly disagree. While the entire time, it’s piano rock, there’s also hints of jazz elements in the album as well as various tempo changes. There’s plenty of variety of each of the songs on here. Then I saw another review about someone giving out too much ‘[redacted]’ like if they’re too scared to even fucking swear and say that no one should’ve been eating this other than one star. Um…if this is how you’re going to react when someone else if giving out a personal opinion like this, then I don’t see how I would even want to talk to that person. Frankly, part of me felt like some of this might be due to sexism, and after seeing one review stating that ‘I’m not a fan of female vocalists’, at least one of you would admit to it. Overall, while I wouldn’t say that this album is near perfect, it’s an excellent album, and the reviews on this site does not do it any justice. There’s some albums that I can get why it has a score like that, but this isn’t one of them (unless if it’s the issue with the voice…to which I can somewhat understand but still disagree). 9/10, but I’m rating this as 5 stars because some of you are really harsh about this album. :/
QUEEN
This album perfect af
Tres bon!
What I think is the best album from 1996.
343/1089 okayyyy slay. i did listen to this one after the generator gave me bolt cutters, so this isn’t a first listen but it *is* a second fetch the bolt cutters set my expectations a bit high when i first listened to it, i still liked it a lot but was more unsure, on second listen i enjoyed and appreciated it more. it’s a really solid album and a good debut faves: The First Taste, Carrion, Criminal 83/100
What a ride. I started the listen thinking “oh her voice is not for me” and then wondered “what’s she so upset about, she’s only 19?” And then it sort of clicked just after ‘Criminal’. If she felt mad, I said yes she’s right to feel that, and I’m mad too. If she felt scorned and misunderstood, I thought “that’s right, let them know!” A truly strange listening experience, fighthing what I thought I knew about her as an artist and clearly knowing nothing. This was about the young adult experience where as huge as the feelings feel in the moment, they’re real and they’re valid and have weight. I can’t wait to return to this for another spin.
perhaps i am biased as i am few weeks out of a break up and a few days out of rekindling contact with them (do not ask me how i feel about The First Taste rn...), and i still have 2 songs to go as i write this, but what a fucking magical album. what an insanely talented woman. this has really made her click for me. just fantastic
probably one of the best things ive ver listened to. the first taste is now one of my favorite songs. perfect for walking around the moma. gorgeous
A true artist.
One of the most influential albums of my teenage years! Still holds up!
Genia.
I actually really enjoyed this album. Having not been too excited about a previous Fiona Apple album that I had listened to, 'Fetch The Bolt Cutters', I was really surprised to see how instantly I started to love this. Track one pulled me in straight away, with the peculiar beat, followed by really naturally lovely vocals. One issue I had with that album was that I found the vocals really strange, and even annoying, at times. But this album felt completely different to me. There was a real beauty behind most of the songs, and I would happily listen to this album again. Some of the songs were quite long, which I disliked slightly last time, but these songs have slightly more to offer me, so I wasn't too bothered by this. I actually think I would have been happy with a longer album, which surprises me, as I am not usually a fan of albums that are too long, unless they have something to offer. Favourites: Sleep to Dream Shadowboxer Slow Like Honey Never Is a Promise
5 stars
Holy shit this album is so great! It came out in 1996, when Fiona Apple was still a teenager, and that’s part of why it made the list. Not just because she was young, but because the album has this unusually mature emotional vocabulary: desire, shame, anger, manipulation, insecurity, self-possession, and romantic damage. It does not sound like a manufactured 90s pop debut. It sounds like someone already building her own private emotional language. Fucking love it. 5 big stars.
The best albums of fiona apple is so amenoo
I’m not sure I would give this album a 5 if I heard it for the first time today. But it was one of the my first 20 CDs… came into my life so early that I’m not sure I picked it myself or if my mom bought it for the household. Her voice was as sure a part of “alternative” for me as Kurt Cobain’s. And even more than that I feel like this album taught middle school me how to FEEL. I had never experienced any of the things she was singing about but I aspired to have those experiences and feelings. I wondered what it would be like to have a “Shadowboxer” love or a “Criminal” love. I don’t know that these songs describe my emotional life today all that well, but I’m attached to rhe memory of each of them so much.
Fiona is THAT girl. Flawless tone and endless talent.
I need to spend more time with this album to really appreciate it for what it is, but even so this is an easy 5
I think that Fiona Apple’s song construction improves after this album and she explores more interesting sounds but there is something so compelling and beautiful here. I love her.
I’m not great at maths but I know for a fact that Fiona Apple + a piano = masterpiece
This album shocked me when it came out. By the marketing I had expected the worst, some 19yo pop singer emo schlock that was corporate produced and polished to death. I couldn't have been more wrong. Yes, emo schlock, yes, 19yo, yes corporate polish, but the result is completely engaging, raw, fun, cohesive. The more you play it the more comes out of it. 30 years later it still holds up.
So good.
I'd only ever heard Criminal going into this. I loved this album, Shadowboxer is my favorite, but the album as a whole is just excellent. I'll definitely be looking at Apple's other albums.
Formative. All time great lyricist. Reading other reviews makes me think some people should be grateful they do not “get” and resonate with the seething rage and expressed through this album.
Already a favorite. Have on cd and vinyl
My only complaint is that I'll never be able to experience this album for the first time again.
Fiona Apple is a beautiful haunting presence.
5/10
This caught me by surprise. I’ve always heard that she rules but finally experiencing it was wonderful. Phenomenal vocalist and these songs are all incredible. No notes.
Favs: criminal, first taste, sleep to dream
Forgot how much I love this woman's music. Moody, beautiful, and deep
This still brings out the emotions, excellent!
Bien.
Incredible!! Absolutely loved it. Every song.
albumi alkaa aika kovalla bängerillä. Shadowboxer also aivan jäätävä bänger. Followed by criminal aivan sairasta. Tää laulaja on myös todella todella lahjakas. Todella moni kappale meni omalle soittolistalle. 6/5 hyvää kamaa
NO NOTED TURBO BANGER CONVINCED I GOT MY FIRST BIG BIG JOB FROM THIS ALBUMS SECRET POWERS DONT ASK
One of my favourite albums everything from the vocals, to the groove this album is such a vibe i love it… even the slower songs are amazing 10/10
Just a really good album by a really good artist.
Love.
Ohhhhh yeah this is exactly the type of music I expected and hoped to discover when I started this challenge!!!!!!!! I've heard of Fiona Apple before but had never heard any of her music but here I am now and I couldn't be more excited to go through each of her albums and listen to her voluntarily after discovering this. I love her voice and how she sings the words she's written oh it’s just flawless I can't stop listening to Tidal; especially Sleep To Dream, Slow Like Honey, The First Taste and Shadowboxer! Fiona Apple I am now obsessed with you
not done.
spectacular! give me 14 of them right now
Fiona is an absolute killer vocalist. I love how subtlety she blends pop with jazz just enough to make it unseen to the average listener, but a spice for the engaged audience. Her melodies and poetry go hand in hand perfectly, which are just masterwork. For the musical era, she chooses such an interesting genre and feel for her composition, and it's incredibly original as it is great. The closing track to just hits so hard too, and to be using writing such extravagant arrangements for her DEBUT mind you, is just incomparable talent.
I added every single song from this album onto my 'liked' songs on Spotify, so that I could come back and put them on my playlists. I was listening to this song while cleaning up around the house and drinking my cup of morning coffee. It's a beautiful spring morning, just chilly enough to leave the windows open, and this album gently soothed me as I worked on my chores. Fiona's voice is dreamy and inspiring.
When I was 19 I was joking smoking pot and trying to get laid. Certainly wasn’t recording a masterpiece.
This is going to be a long walk so bear with me for a bit. Because of my job I would have to walk through an area of the city I worked in that was 99.9999999999% students at the University I worked at. When I was in school there this place was mostly frat houses but also a pretty low cost (for that close to the University) area for students to live. By this time the whole city and especially around the University were going through pretty rapid gentrification and change. The area around the University where students lived were mostly small quad apartments nothing over 3 stories tall. These were being bought up by developers and torn down to build multistory monstrosities. One day on my way to work one of the quad plex apartments must have been bought and was finally getting rid of the residents so they could rip it down and build a 'luxury' student living experience. (Quick aside here, but maybe kids just leaving their parents house should not be living in 'luxury'. I mean I get that there are some rich ass kids that go to this school but shit they are prolly in the greek system anyway). Sorry, so one of these places was being torn down and someone was just putting years of physical media out on the side walk in big plastic bins. We are talking burned DVD's full of data, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, CDR's. I went to my office and grabbed some bags and walked back up there to collect as much of it as I could before either the trash got picked up or someone else got this treasure trove just sitting on the side walk. It took me about a year to go through it all, there was a lot of bootlegged porn and music from torrent sites and the tapes and mini discs were mostly music, but as I got near to the end I hit what was the goldmine. Some girl (I hope the owner of all this stuff) had what I can only assume was an audio diary and maybe they forgot that this one tape was not a mix tape, or forgot to get rid of it, but it was a 90 minute tape that the A side was her complaining about her boyfriend, the B side was her clearly intoxicated and still complaining about said boyfriend but about 10 minutes in you can hear her put on Tidal by Fiona Apple and start to sing along to it letting out all the pain and suffering she has held inside of her because of this shit boyfriend. And that is why this album gets 5 stars. Also since this album is not listed we all need to recognize that this album title "When The Pawn Hits The Conflicts He Thinks Like A King What He Knows Throws The Blows When He Goes To The Fight And He'll Win The Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters The Ring There's No Body To Batter When Your Mind Is Your Might So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand And Remember That Depth Is The Greatest Of Heights And If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where To Land And If You Fall It Won't Matter, Cuz You'll Know That You're Right" is 100% about Paul Thomas Anderson.
of course i like this
Loved it, had only listened to Fetch the Bolt Cutters before.
Absolute godsend sent to me as the only music I had downloaded during a three-hour train journey on the floor of the vestibule. Good thing this slapped!
Love the melancholy vibes she brings to every track. Love the tender vocals and criminal is a classic
I had never heard of Fiona Apple but full marks. 10 years ahead of her time considering where similar artists were in the 2000s. Gorgeous voice, moody song writing, full marks.
Day829 - fiona apple seems way ahead of her time on this album and it all still sounds fresh
Queen!
AWESOME!!
My Ex would play this album at high volume when she was upset with me. So I didn’t give it a fair shot for years. It’s fuckin brilliant
Love this album. Her second is still my favourite. But this is also really really good. Love her voice. Love her style. Love this album.
This album makes me nostalgic for something I've never experienced. It makes me think of dark bars in a rainy new York. This album is pure vibes. Love it.
Amazing album, brilliant songwriting, still probably the weakest fiona apple. Crazy that she has two albums on the list but not when the pawn or idler wheel.
Huvin erilainen levybkuin kuvittelun. Fiona Apple on entuudestaan täysin vieras. Suosikeiksi nousevat Sleep to dream, The first taste ja Carrion. 5/5
Much Better than Expected!
For one reason or another, I've avoided artists such as Fiona Apple. I remember when Fetch the Boltcutters came out and my friends were largely so hyped for it. I couldn't care less and didn't get it. Now I sort of do. This album would create a life-long fan of an artist, regardless of what they put out after.
💕💕💕💓💓💓💓❤️❤️❤️🖤🖤🖤
Wow. Well 1- as I was listening to Sleep to Dream, I learned she wrote this at 14?!!!!!!! Incredible track. Incredible artist. Totally took me by surprise - this is a new fav!
4,5/5
Oh how excellent she is
i fucking love fiona apple
Top level pop. Amazing song writing, great composition, interesting shift of wibes.
Jesus, what a voice.
I GOTTT MY FEETTT ON THE GROUNDD AND I DON'T GOO TO SLEEPP TO DREAMMM
She is a sorceress. The range on this album is great. Some feels so intimate like she's singing softly directly to you. The bigger moments have such awesome angsty buildup.
I tried coming up with a better review, but god she is such a vibe after having a shit day at work!
I feel on the verge of tears and I love it.
An old favourite, always an enjoyable listen.
I respect Fiona Apple's ability to be herself musically and stray away from sounding like someone else or pretending to be the next big thing. Her debut album is overall pretty solid aside from a few "sad white girl playing piano" songs (the white woman's version of sad white guy playing acoustic guitar). The result is an album that ages very well.
own
The astonishingly great debut album from one of my favorite artists still sparkles. Every track is a gem.
Hard to believe that this album was written before the age of twenty - every song feels like it has such a weight behind it, and Fiona's presence on each song is towering. Despite this, the hooks and instrumentation are amazing, particularly the one two punch of Slow Like Honey and The First Taste. Wish When the Pawen would be on here too, but this is probably the best Fiona album on the list.
Imagine giving me a Fiona Apple album. Imagine giving ME. A Fiona Apple album. I have listened. To every single Fiona Apple album. She is my fourth favorite solo artist of all time. She does not have an album below a 9. This album is especially good though, so let’s talk about it. First of all, the entire first side is straight-up spotless. The first five songs are five of the best songs ever made, and that’s said confidently. Sleep to dream, sullen girl, shadowboxer, criminal, and slow like honey are all like insane highlights. It’s like weird and kinda unfair that all five of those songs are on the same side of the same album. The second side is definitely worse, however, it’s still great! The first taste was a song that initially I was kinda lukewarm on, but L-rdy it’s so well produced. Those guitars… what. Never is a promise was always a favorite, though my enjoyment of it has waned since I first heard it. Idk, just sounds more dull now. It’s the same with the following two songs on the album. However the closer is great, even if I prefer the switchup to the rest of the song. Anyway this is a fantastic debut and Fiona Apple is so awesome. 9.5/10
Lush and strange throughout, woven with dark threads
GOD TIER album. And she was 19! It’s been in my rotation for 30 (gasp) years and it holds up. Sleep to dream, shadowboxer, and, of course, Criminal. Brilliant record.
Sublime
Fiona Apple was only about 18 when she made this album which is just mind boggling. It is incredible. It reminds me of Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, but smarter and more complex. Just better musically. Sleep to Dream and Shadowboxer are great, but Criminal stands out, it is an amazing song. Apple is an amazingly talented artist.
incredible time
ALLAH YAPAMAZ
Perfect album. Listening to this the week more Epstein files were released really does make me want to tear a room apart and scream forever. Feminine rage and sadness forever.
Great album, I have this CD from back in the day and another of hers. 5 stars
I love her lyrics. I think her music is moving too, but I especially love her lyrics. This is an album that I have listened to multiple times in the years since it came out. It’s very unique, original, moving. It won’t hit the same way for everybody, I expect there will be some wide variation in opinions. Which is what happens with art that isn’t generic and doesn’t cater to the lowest common denominator.
I've listened to this album before but haven't fully listened to it back to back so it was a nice experience
I love this album It's like a diary written in heaven and hell
This is another album that I was interested in when it came out because I really liked "Criminal", but I never picked it up. When you're a broke teenager you have to prioritize, and Fiona Apple just never made it to the top of the list. I didn't obtain this album, or even listen to it in it' entirety until years later, and I eventually picked it up on vinyl. Which is a great pressing by the way. Anyway, I'm actually glad that I didn't get this album in the 90's because I don't know that my teenage self would have appreciated it. But now, this is an amazing album. It's soulful, sultry, introspective, poetic... all the things. The music fits her signing style and lyrical themes perfectly, it all just fits. It's almost like it gets better every time I listen to it.
I really had no idea what to expect and I was very pleasantly surprised. She has a great voice I really enjoyed this
Listened Before: No Never heard this one but I listened to When The Pawn. She is so badass. I love the art pop/jazz singing with the piano and mellotron. 4.5/5 rounded up!
Love the album! Gives off 90’s vibes for sure!
I love the first few songs on this album so much I have to give a 5
One of my favorites!
i love fiona apple so much there has never been another unapologetic misandrist icon like her, she showed me female rage in music
Fiona Apple, I was unfamiliar with your game. In a lot of ways, this album is sort of antithetical to my group's listen from yesterday - Al Green's "Let's Stay Together". Green's album is one that reads within the lines of soul and R&B convention, dares not push any boundary, and makes itself interesting in it's pure dedication to the craft of its genre and vocal talent of its frontman. Apple's album, while still immaculately produced, does all it can to buck convention for young female singer-songwriters, and feels as though it recast the mold in doing so. Truly, Apple walked so her modern juniors could run. This album dares to explore a variety of sounds that keep it from feeling stale, from sultry and mysterious on "Slow Like Honey" to more rebellious tracks like "Criminal" and "Carrion". In doing this, it doesn't sacrifice songcraft or emotional depth, which is truly amazing, having been created by an 18 year old. Through the first half of the album, I wanted to knock Apple's vocal talent, and given the second half, I cannot. While she may not be a soprano siren capable of hitting high notes requisite in a lot of female pop, she *refuses* to make that her wheelhouse, and delivers tender and vulnerable moments of her tracks with the touch they require, as well as puts her foot on the gas and gives her vocals some growling power when necessary. I can see the hype on this, it feels like a foundational album of vulnerable, lush alt-singer songwriter work that is responsible for inspiring much of what followed it.
I was worried that my review would be bolstered by nostalgia but after listening to this debut album from an 18 year old artist I couldn’t help but be amazed. The way that every song has its own unique sound but the album still feels cohesive will forever be impressive. Not a single miss. Easy 5/5.
I loved this album! Fiona Apple is such a great songwriter and has such a unique voice. The way she plays with atonal sounds in her melodies really scratches an itch in my brain.
Slaps
ssssss
Songs: 9/10 God loved this album so much. The jazz, the piano, the samba is just amazing. Ballads upon ballads and the musicality is just all there. Fiona has a beautiful voice that fits her style so well
when fiona apple hit the scene, she was certainly a product of a different era. she had a throwback style and the heart of a poet. and to think that she was only nineteen years old when this album came out. a phenom in the truest sense of the word. her voice is soothing, haunting, and sultry… all at once. i fell in love with this album the first time i heard it and i still think it’s incredible. fun fact: the name of this album is “tidal”, which is but one word. she went with a different approach with the name of her follow up album, which was: “when the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king what he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight and he'll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring there’s no body to batter when your mind is your might so when you go solo, you hold your own hand and remember that depth is the greatest of heights and if you know where you stand, then you know where to land and if you fall it won't matter, cuz you'll know that you're right”. this album is known colloquially as “when the pawn…”, you know, for the sake of brevity. highlights: “sleep to dream”, “shadowboxer”, “criminal”, “the first taste”
BEST ALBUM EVER
My favourite Fiona Apple album, sensual and emotive. Incredible, feels like it takes you on a journey.
BEST ALBUM SO FAR
This album is really solid. Loved all the songs. If you like Mitsky you are going to love this one. The only song I knew from this album was Criminal but all the songs specially Sleep to Dream are so good.
how could i sleepwalk around this gem for 20+ years of consuming music? candid, direct, wondrous and every song pushes me down a different pit stuffed with poisoned spikes and cotton candy
This album is pure genius. Also sounds way too mature to be a debut. Absolutely fantastic writing. Lots of moments on this album give me awe and it never gets boring. Iconic album art as well.
fiona apple is good and the first song in this album always slaps
FYE
Twas quite good, I would def listen again. And I knew one or two songs!
so good!!!!! favourite: carrion
Fantastic album.
I get the Fiona Apple hype. A slight banger but the rest of the album is super solid.
If you're a young alt woman and meet this album at the right time in your life, you'll never let it go. It just captures something about being an angsty young woman so well.
Underappreciated, timeless album. I think this would get significant airtime today and feel just as progressive.
“My fever burns me deeper than I’ve ever shown to you.” What a confident, smart debut album. That first track is scorching. I’m not as familiar with Apple’s first two albums as I am with the rest, but it’s great to hear she was always this sharp, honest, and self-confident as a writer. It’s refreshing to hear her sing about trauma, romance, and personal disappointments with so much self-respect. The production uses her piano chops and rhythm arrangements that seem clearly hip-hop inspired; it makes for a timeless sound that anyone could identify as Apple. And, of course, what a voice.
Honestly, glad I came across this later in life. Teenage me would not have appreciated this. Her voice and lyrics are phenomenal. 5/5
Took me a while to get to this album since the first song put me off. WRONG. Absolutely incredible. Reminded me a little of Nick Cave, at very least the first couple of songs. From top to bottom a gorgeous album, and even more so after I found she was 19 when she wrote/sang/directed this??? Fiona Apple the GOAT.
i've listened to this album a hundred times, but it's been a good while so i'm pleased to revisit. i first listened to tidal in maybe...4th grade? it'll be interesting to see how i feel about my old favorites and see if i discover any new ones. sleep to dream was an old favorite, and it holds up, same for slow like honey shadowboxer and never is a promise were my top favorites, and i still love them. amazing to think i was 8 or 9 years old jamming out to this, being struck by its beauty. never is a promise is just...otherworldly. and fiona herself wasn't even 20 (TWENTY!) years old???? my GOD. criminal, an obvious classic the first taste - the lyrics are so good! truly gorgeous yodel-y unshaped vocals at the end, musically interesting, what a gem
Right from the opening crash, Tidal takes you on a wave. Fiona Apple is a force of nature; vocally, musically, lyrically. A monster debut that is a promise of things to come.
Awesome album. Fascinating lyrics but the jazzy piano backing and voice make for a great listen even if you’re not in the mood to dive into lyrics.
They say an apple a day keeps the Britpop at bay. Thank you for the brief respite Fiona. May your remaining days be filled with brown sugar and cinnamon.
Absolutely zero notes. This album is phenomenal and I had sadly forgotten that fact. Her voice is a truly an instrument on this record and I feel like I’m being brought further into her inner world with each bar.
a stunning debut fiona apple i love you
The fact that Fiona wrote and composed this lush, meticulously crafted album before she was 20 is absolutely incredible. A jazzy, well constructed breath of fresh air. 5/5
been heard. 5.
love
Always loved this album
Thank you for my life Miss Apple
I was not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did.
um yes
Good album, mid 4, maybe high 4? Big fan
Jazzy Fiona. Mi álbum favorito de Fiona Apple.
This album has zero skipable songs.
A perfect album
Is there any other debut album that delivers such a devastating gut-punch as this? Is there an album that delivers an equal or better gut-punch more beautifully? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, someone will have to point me to the albums that outdo this. A masterpiece.
Nice reminder of someone who’d fallen off my radar
All time favorite. Inspired me to plunk around on the piano in high school. FA doesn’t miss.
tidal = for people who are depressed but sane idler wheel = for people who are depressed AND insane Fav song: probably Criminal but honorable mentions to Shadowboxer, Slow Like Honey and The First Taste
always loved this.
"I should listen to Fiona Apple more" is one of those mental nags that lives in my head right next to "I should exercise more," "I should eat healthier," and "I should drink less." So I was very excited to see this come up. It's just a fantastic album with a beautiful voice. The songs themselves are brilliant, and the quirky production takes them to another level. ¡Viva Fiona! That's a . . .
4.5/5 - This is really, really good. Shadowboxer is probably my favorite track. Her voice in that lead-in to the chorus is so strong and confident, and it has an edge to it that doesn't sound dated to the time. Lyrics all around are worth paying attention to, and I just like her voice. I'll keep this in my rotation now. Rounding up for saying f*ck you to the music industry in the 90s.
Fantastic. Heartbreaking. Fiona going full oracle at 19 - wise beyond reason
I was really curious about whether this project would introduce me to music i would give 5 stars and what it would be. And i guess i knew about Fiona Apple before. I've heard Criminal, I've seen the first Shrek movie several times, she had that really good cover of that Elvis Costello song i like. I knew i would like her music, i guess but i didn't know i would like it this much. I don't even know if i have the words for it. It's so cool, so groovy, dark clever lyrically. I feel like early-to-mid 2000s Jason Mraz who's live shows I've listened to copious amounts of and who inspired me to start writing and playing music was highly influenced by her. I wish I'd heard this album sooner, listening to it took me to a different place. I like it.
This album is fantastic.
I love this album. Such a gem of the 90s
Classic debut
shes so fucking real
perfect to listen to while doing stuff
Fantastic, all time high, one of the best
I already love this album
Fiona Apple has the most intense voice ever. I love this debut record like no other.
Incredible
The fact that Fiona was so young when this album came out makes it all that much more staggering. The vocals and raw emotion permeate through every song and it’s hard not to get chills. Best Track: The First Taste
She rather crushed it with this one.
She has a very cool sound. It's pure attitude in music form, including melodies, lyrics, and rthyms. The arrangements are layered and very interesting. Solid piano playing, no acrobatics. Vocals are on point and very stylized, a little sultry, lots of anger/attitude but a sweet smoothness to them too. Is it pop, alt, blues rock,.... something in between? It's cool whatever it is.
Love this album, has a good mixture of louder and quieter songs. She's such a great musician.
Great album, I want a vinyl of this!
It’s a good, good album
Unusual and creative
Perfect
So sultry
Never in my life had I listened to this artist ! I stopped buying new music in the late 80’s! I loved this album and will playing it again!
I have a hard time putting to words what I love about Fiona Apples' music. There is something ineffable about it. But I am happy to just sit back and enjoy it.
Always LOVED this album
I like it's originality.
Complex lyrics, great voice, and style.
great front to back
Less than 50 albuns in and this is my second Fiona Apple album (and I think we are done with her, sadly). I really like Tidal but this is the possibly the one I dont like much in her diacography after the scattered Fetch The Bolt Cutters. I find it weird that Tidal is on the list as well, it was clear that she was still finding her sound in this album, so much influence of classic jazz, but even as a vocalist she was not as sure as the other albums. I fell When the Pawn... would be better representation of her sound in her list, as it is her best album. I will give it a 5, as I love Fiona, but itbis not my favourite on her discography
Genius
I really liked the three first songs, I already knew Fiona Apple but didn’t know this album, so I very satisfied :)
Fiona Apple has one of the most gorgeous voices out there, and it blows my mind that she was so young when she recorded it. There is a level of elegance to her delivery paired with a broodiness that women young and old can connect with. The lyrics are eloquently written and complex, and every song is absolutely phenomenal. Truly a masterpiece.
Didn't even have to listen to know this is a 5* for me. I had a big Fiona Apple phase in the late 00s-early 10s. While this one is actually not my favorite of hers (It's "When The Pawn and I don't think it's on the list, boo!) it's an undeniably strong debut. The way her emotions are so raw contrasted with her beautiful voice and music has always resonated with me. It was a joy to revisit and I will definitely be adding back into my rotation.
Excellent all the way through. Opening track engages you immediately and the rest is such a fun ride through awesome song writing and arrangements.
Stunning debut album by a teenager at the time. First 5 tracks almost perfect then the energy fell away a little before coming back with Carrion.
Super belle voix Mme Spektor... euh j'veux dire Florence... euh j'veux dire Fiona.
Topalbum! Is dit PJ Harvey's zus? 5.0
My high school girlfriend had this album and she and I both loved it. I have almost all of these songs in my current music collection, so I've heard those many, many times and they are so, so incredibly good. The writing, the performance, the recording, the production -- everything is immaculate. Every single song is one of my favorite songs. Fiona Apple is so, so good, I have a hard time putting it into words. It blows my mind that this was her first album. She came out of the gate so hard and just knocked it out of the park. If I could give six stars, I would. Five stars.
Love this! Her voice and the arrangements are beautiful. Favorite songs were Sleep to Dream, Criminal, Slow Like Honey, Never Is a Promise, and Carrion.
Man the instrumentals are so fire, they really hit. Not only that but there was a coherence and tactility to the album which makes it really stand out as one of her best, combined with the intensity of the jazz chords going on its awesome. My only concern is that there isnt as much breathing room to sit with her spectacular lyrics in between the hard hitting melodies and ornate sounds, but its only a minor quip.
This is a great album. When it popped up, my daughter screamed “you’re gonna love it” and she was right. Her smoky and rich voice, along with some great piano playing make for a great combination. Of course, I love piano in songs, and one of my favorite modern artists is Sara Bareilles. Apple’s voice isn’t nearly as great as SB’s, but it’s perhaps cooler and certainly strong in its own right. I already knew that Criminal was an excellent tune, but there’s a lot more which is great on this record. Sleep To Dream was released as a single before Criminal, which is too bad, as that probably would have built on or at least consolidated the success of Criminal if it was released afterwards. I loved Pale September too. Her voice sounds excellent on this tune. There’s a series of other well constructed songs as well. Bottom line is that this is an excellent album, especially for a debut. There’s an amazing sophistication about this album for how young she was when she recorded it. Really a great effort.
Fiona can do anything with her voice, she has an incredible range and can evoke any emotion with her voice. Without a doubt she is the best vocalist of her generation. This combined with the unusual chord progressions and a variety of styles, although all piano heavy, makes for an amazing album.
fuck yes
yes i am biased and yes this album is also incredible
Really enjoyed the songs I haven't heard before. Really like her piano playing too since it obviously is so integrated with her lyrics and voice like Tori Amos.
Honestly such a pleasant surprise, not at all what I expected after seeing it won awards for rock but it is just a really good slow pop ballad/jazzy album, loved the piano throughout, good few of these songs going into my everyday playlists. Gonna listen to more Fiona apple to see if I like the rest of her discography now too
Forgotten all about Fiona Apple. Took me right back. Knew a few tracks, lover getting to know the rest. Best new album for me so far
I'd heard several songs from the album before, but was still somehow surprised by how good it was. Crazy to think how young she was when it came out.
Really solid album, I’ve been looking for more pop music I this vein tbh. Kinda feels like Amy wine house, Billie Eilish in a way. Just vibing music I can sit and listen to for a day, and hearing her albums get better from there is a nice sound. I think this is a low 5, I love it and could put it on just to vibe to. The music, her voice is phenomenal.
jadore
Smooth sultry and great for dinner parties
I love angry vengeful women and I love fiona apple
I haven't heard this album in a long while. Objectively it's very good, albeit a tad sad - strong rhythms, delicious vocals. She seems to have an "old soul" for an 18 year old. Favorite songs: Shadowboxer, Criminal, Sleep to Dream, The First Taste, Never Is a Promise, Carrion.
What we needed. Such a talent.
Amazing album, I did a real deep dive this weekend. And this morning again. It is maybe 2 or 3 songs too long..
heard this many times before today, fiona apple's one of my favs Sleep to Dream - 5/5 Sullen Girl - 4/5 Shadowboxer - 5/5 Criminal - 5/5 Slow Like Honey - 3/5 The First Taste - 5/5 Never Is a Promise - 5/5 The Child Is Gone - 4/5 Pale September - 5/5 Carrion - 5/5 Average score: 4.6/5 (rounding up)
Great talent, 18 at the time of this album! Precocious percussion throughout, and the outré outro to Criminal sneaks this into 5* territory
I can't believe that she made this at 19, jesus christ
10/10 Fiona doesn’t have a single bad song, — let alone a bad album — one of the most talented musicians I’ve ever heard, and the way she grows and evolves throughout her discography without ever sacrificing quality in any way is truly as inspiring as it gets
Whew, stunning debut. It is hard to believe she is just 18 on this album. Her love-weary lyrics, husky alto voice, and jazzy piano arrangements drip with hard-earned experience. I was transfixed.
What a debut, Fiona absolutely crushes this album. Indie alt rock that really stands out against her contermporaries from the decade, there are some absolutely stunning songs here. My favorite is Slow Like Honey, by far, but Sleep to Dream and of course Criminal standout as well. This is a lot better than Fetch the Bolt Cutters, which I still enjoyed, but it isn't on the same plane as this.
I would die for Fiona Apple.
This is one of those albums that I never really listened to much when it came out, but obviously should have. The only modern singer I can think of with this kind of vocal capability and uniqueness is Adele. There are so many other singers out there that come nowhere close to this. The singing in here matches the tone of the music so well; she's got such a great lower registry and all of the feel of a smoky jazz lounge without seeming overly forced. The whole thing is great; there's not a bad track on here.
God she's great. What a voice. A heavy nostalgia hit despite not owning the album. When Criminal aired on MTV... YOU WATCHED IT.
1996 US. Chamber pop, jazz pop. !!!!!
One of the best albums of all time!
A masterpiece and includes my all time favorite song to sing sincerely to myself.
Great album, great voice and arrangements. I like the jazz feeling.
Lovely tunes.
A dark and beautiful album that showcases Fiona Apple’s talents very well. A pleasant surprise for me.
GREATNESS. We love Fi Fi.
Fiona apple is one of my favorite artists. Her album tidal is a great reason why. The track first taste is my absolute favorite. I love her vocals and creative instrumentation.
Beautiful. Just beautiful till the end. Bravo!
One of my favorites; every single song is good.
I love her
I will admit that I’m maybe a little bit biased because I had such a crush on Fiona Apple in high school, but this is great stuff!
Perfect album for this dreary, rainy day. Have always loved her voice and the instrumentation on this record. Great stuff.
Fantastic debut. I still listen to it often.
Gorgeous album, Fiona Apple has such a powerful voice.
One of the sassiest, most vulnerable, haunting, and consistent albums I’ve ever heard. Didn’t pay too much attention to the vocals on first listen but excited to revisit several times
This is an absolute masterpiece and one of the best first albums ever made.
Sehr toll! The Child is Gone finde ich weiterhin etwas langweilig, dafür gefällt mir in Pale September der verminderte Akkord sehr gut.
This album is stunning. I remember having it on a loop for years. I forget about Fiona Apple sometimes but I’m always excited to be reminded.
My forever girl
I can't believe I waited this long to listen. This is the perfect rainy day album
Nice and sensual songs
It's a 4.5, but come on, love her. Iconic music video from the era and a unique voice in the world.
One of my favorite albums
This album bangs. The lyrics and production is so powerful, not a single miss on this album. How is this not mainstream??
Challenging and rewarding! Chock-full of artistry!
Icon
The First Taste, Never Is a Promise and Carrion all top tier
Probably one of my favorite albums of all time. Like many 90s kids I was totally in love with Fiona. Between Pantera and other heavy stuff, I ran this CD and her followup in HEAVY rotation. Almost every song is a musical masterpiece. There are so many layers and musical embellishments. I still love this album so much.
Getting mind-blown by this album. I'm getting Sade vibes here and there.
who hurt fiona apple 🤔😡🤬
No estoy segura de si estoy triste o enojada; Fiona Apple tampoco.
Arrangement wise, probably her weakest album, but still a masterful songwriter and singer.
No question 5 out of 5. This album made my week. Other than the live cover of “I want you “by Mazzy Star with Elvis Costello AND despite all the accolades for the new album, nothing else compares to Tidal…
Right album. Right place
Iconic debut
Suck it
really hard to relisten to the album because i listened to it once before in such a dark time in my life. but this album is in my imaginary list of best albums of all time…like if i had to choose 3 albums this would be on there. fiona apple is just a genius and this album just proves it all. sullen girl will always be my favorite song. bless her and this album, i don’t know how i would have made it through high school without tidal.💙
I only knew criminal (which is one of my favourite songs) coming into this Did the rest of the album live up to that mark? Yes, and with quite a bit to spare Not a bad track on here
one of the most genius writers of the modern age
Lovely album full of great ballads and songs. I really like the instrumentation and singing here. Fiona Apple's songwriting is also great as well, much better than the pop girlies that followed after. I really like how a lot of the songs change in sound throughout the song itself, every note here feels like its really thought out. Shadowboxer and Sullen Girl are my favorites here.
Great album. This was one of the first artists that made me fall in love with a female front woman!
Wow was whatever when it came out to me li d of didnt get it but mow I feel its a masterpiece. Aged better with time. Fiona is greater than great. Super blown away with listening to this after about 20 years later a new meaning. Loved every single song.
This mind this body and this voice cannot be stifled by your deviant ways!!!!! I've read my fair share or more of interviews with Fiona Apple and while she can be cringey/pretentious/annoying at times, I really think she scores highly on being intelligent and talented enough to far outweigh it. This could have been another album penned by a teenager that is followed by not-so-great work because they seemingly used up all their good ideas, but I think her work continued to be great, which makes this shine even more. "Pale September" feels like a little transportation capsule every time I listen to it and I'm sure I don't need to talk about "Criminal" here. However..........as an album, I think some of the tracks being so excellent means that tracks like "Sullen Girl" and "The First Taste" wind up feeling forgettable even though the listen-through experience is still good. 4.5 rounding up
Really enjoyed, even listened to more of her albums after
Man I really wore this one out back in those crazy late 90’s. Really, Fiona Apple hasn’t put out a bad album in my opinion. I’d say this one, When The Pawn Hits…, and her newest release, Fetch The Bolt Cutters are my favorites. She’s just such an interesting songwriter and has such a distinct voice. If you enjoy this album then I think you’ll really love WILLOW’s album “empathogen.” She has a similar progressive and jazzy take on pop music much like Fiona. Go listen to that now you won’t be disappointed!
Such a cool album. Smooth music with powerful vocals and lyrics. I tell ya, I loved the videos, too. Super sexy. I have never listened to any of her albums after this one, so I'll need to do that. I was 16 years old boy when this came out, but my favorite was always, and still is, Sullen Girl. I like the piano. Slow Like Honey is a throwback. Great tune. I guess she was 18 or 19 when this came out. This doesn't sound like someone that young, but she nails it. Classic album that I like start to finish, so I'm giving this a 5.
Brilliant debut album. I love every song on this disk. Shadowboxer is outstanding as is Criminal. I bought this when it was first released and still love it today.
Well yes!
Fucking awesome
perfect
Nine Apples out of ten.
really nice
Surprising and compelling album.
She lives up to the hype
Still amazing. Still know every word.
This album is wonderful! Musically sophisticated, lyrically insightful beyond her years. Stellar through and through.
Favourite tracks: sleep to dream; shadowboxer; sullen girl; criminal; never is a promise; pale September; the first taste
Its so down, but so good. So many of us have felt all these songs and felt completely overwhelmed by life and who we are. Hearing them is so gut wrenching yet beautiful. She also has such a beautiful unique sound. Its not perfect, but that is part of what her appeal is. Her ability to story tell and share such deep emotions is intensified by her voice and he music.
Tidal pops up and my heart sings. This review will write itself. Fiona is a one in a billion musician. Her honesty and truth speak so loud and clear and beautifully, and I find that to be the rarest of qualities among the vast majority of popular musicians that are crammed down our throats by the media these days. She’s special. BEYOND special. This record was made by an emotionally damaged yet fierce of soul 18 year old girl who had already lived some shit. Sullen Girl lays it out. She’s sad beyond her precious years because some asshole took from her the most prized possessions she had; her youth and innocence. I can’t imagine how many girls who’d been raped found this and healed by simply having someone put a real voice to it. Fiona comes with that voice and poetry so powerful it can move mountains. My first thought in 1997 was “who is this amazing black girl with the voice of a warrior?” When I saw she was a frail looking white girl, I was astonished. Shadowboxer lets that husk come to the forefront. It has an old school jazz vibe that wraps the package up in a big beautiful bow. Criminal is the big, still uber cool hit with hip hop earnestness and hyper confident delivery. On the other side of the coin, the piano melody of Never Is A Promise sounds so fragile it feels as if a feather could break her, but again, her voice is the powerful reckoning to the trauma inside her. This may not be a perfect record in terms of each song hitting its mark exactly as some songs drag on unnecessarily, but it is a perfect record in tone. It’s a perfect record of introduction to a force of nature in pop music. Fiona can take 8+ years between albums now, if she even feels like making anything at all, because she’s got nothing to prove. When she does drop an album, it’s a titan of modern art. 2020’s Fetch The Bolt Cutters is just that. She was the real deal in 1996, and she still is now.
Ah, Fiona’s debut, brings back memories! I love how a lot of the songs start slow and simple, and then the layers build into a big emotional energy even as the pace stays similar. Criminal and Shadowboxer are standout hits, and Never is a Promise is a favorite on here too. Just really beautiful music, I love her.
Easy listen. Nice and soft. Powerful vocals and you can really tell how much she influenced modern pop sound.
Any Fiona album gets a 5. Such an insane debut album. I’ve always thought the back half was a bit weaker but they hit me a lot harder this listen. Also is my favorite album cover of hers. I sadly ranked Fetch the Bolt Cutters at a 3 star but it would be 5 star if I had to rate again. Hopefully one of the other 3 albums are on here as well. It's impossible to rank her albums; genuinely any could be my favorite that day. Rating: 4.9
I love love love this album. I just picked it up a couple of months ago in a depression, not knowing the depression was about to get worse. It was an album I had loved in the past with a partner, this and Extraordinary Machine together. With that breakup, I had to put them away for a while. This was YEARS ago and I've had breakups since then where I could reclaim those musical memories faster. But I'm back to Fiona Apple. And I'm grateful. I think this is good sad-boy music, but this is something that also says "it's okay, not everything is your fault, and there may be an end to this." Also, Fiona, if by some weird chance you read this, I'll run into traffic for you. Just saying.
And it’s a sad, sad world.
a masterpiece.
The best
