2/5 naaaah
I am not a huge Gabriel fan outside of his hits and charters. That is also the reason why I prefer post-Gabriel Genesis over Gabriel-led Genesis.
In his Britney Era. Alexa, play In your eyes.
Should be called Peter Gabriel 2. 2 stars!
I absolutely hated all the percussion on this album. Lyrics are horrible.
Best Songs: Biko Listen Again: No
Sorta creepy, but I still had to see where it went...
Oh god, please stop talking about Peter Gabriel.
2/5
Meh 2.4
I like a lot of Peter Gabriel songs, none of them are on this album.
I disliked this more than I thought. Maybe it's just not suiting my mood today.
Soft Ozzy Osbourne. I liked the second to last song (Lead a normal life).
Dette skjønte jeg liksom ikke helt. Litt for mye som skjedde på en gang, litt for eksperimentelt uten struktur. Vet ikke. Må kanskje høre mer!
i don't care anymore
#32. Is this one of those things where you had to have been there to get it? Because I wasn't there, and I don't get it. I see all these four and five star reviews, but personally I don't see how this can be viewed as anything other than mediocre. 2/5: meh
I quite liked some of the more leftfield musical elements here, but generally I am not a fan of the songs and I don't think Pete's voice really suits the style. It is almost New Wave in feel in places, but the prog-ish melodrama drowns that out most of the time, sadly. I want to like this but I don't.
I really struggled with this album. The sleeve notes suggest that it should be outstanding - Fripp! Weller! Phil on drums! But it's not an easy listen. There's no obvious theme for it to all hang together. It felt almost as disjointed as Fripp's guitar style. Gawd knows how Weller fitted into this back in 1980. Not a disaster, but an interesting listen.
boring sorry just not my thing
Kind of weird but found family snapshot and not one of us quite nice
If you're a P. G. Fan it's ok. Games without frontiers got a lot of play and us my favorite even though top 40 freak usually doesn't appeal to me. No big earworms like his "Sledgehammer". Not my cup of tea but I wasn't in pain listening to it.
I've never had an album start so strong and drop off so hard, at first I enjoyed how weird it was with Intruder then after 3 songs I kept asking "Is this song still going". Some songs have unnecessary 1 minute lead ins that just extend the runtime. Overall he's not that bad and you can get through it without suffering. Just felt like a long and boring experience. 3/10
I thought I'd like this as it's a step away from what I know about Peter Gabriel but it didn't land with me.
I liked ‘and through the wire’ wasn’t too fussed on the rest of the songs.
Just saw a great concert last night. Full of energy, excitement and ready for the day's album and we get this. Whatever this is or was meant to be, it definitely missed the mark with this reviewer. Slow and boring. Through The Wire picked up the energy, but then went back to the whatever this was. Listened twice in case I was still my high from last night. Yea, 2nd time around just left me frustrated. I just going with a 2 and leave it there. I know he's got a few good songs out there, they just weren't on this album. 2
2 I don’t know Peter Gabriel, nor do I admittedly know a ton of his music, but something about this album and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway makes me think I’d find him really annoying. He feels like a wannabe David Bowie but without any of the charm, and from what I’ve read about him, far too much of an egotistical control freak for the quality of his music. I’ve never been a fan of his later radio hits, and after this entry on the list, I gotta say I’m not a fan of his earlier experimental stuff either. This album feels a lot more like The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway than it does So, but whereas Lamb at least had some sense of structure to it (I say lightly), this album feels incredibly disorganized in comparison. Maybe that’s not a fair comparison given the other is a full on narrative-driven rock opera (allegedly), but any good album should have some sense of flow and framework to it regardless, and I don’t feel like that’s the case here. While I can’t say I hated the sound, I don’t find it nearly as interesting or as ingenious as Gabriel seems to think it to be. As far as I’m concerned, this has third rate Bowie written all over it, with a splash of new wave mixed in for good measure. And yet, it seems I’m an outlier based on what I’ve seen others say about this album online - a lot of people hail Gabriel’s decision not to include any kind of cymbals on this album as musically revolutionary, but it really doesn’t feel out of place from other contemporary new wave/electronic stuff. And then there was this one review I saw where someone praised the album as genius because of its “secret way of listening”: Starting with the track “Start” and treating the first two songs as bonus tracks. What? Do you know what that sounds like? The same exacting f*cking thing. Ugh. The fans of this album are about as bad as Gabriel. I digress, not terrible, but perhaps a bit too pretentious to be this mediocre. I’m walking away annoyed here though, so we’re going to swing for the lower half of the scale.
Meh
Listening to this has reinforced my neutrality towards Peter Gabriel. As in the 80s, I don't connect with the music or lyrics as I do with other artists. I don't dislike him, but I also don't particularly like him either.
1980. Alternative, prog in some areas. First couple tracks were nice, the rest unmemorable and stale.
This is fine. Not really into it.
There’s some fun New Wave influence about this album. There’s some important sociopolitical message to this album. I was sad that “Shock the Monkey” was not on this album.
Not my favorite style
- there are a few good moments - I Can’t Remember is very catchy, feels like a hit - overall just a little industrial sounding for me
The album starts off in a very simplistic manner. Droning brum beat then quiet yet dark vocals come in. The album progresses until the hit Games without Frontiers. This album represents the beginning of the minimalistic prog/new wave sound that helped launch Depeche Mode, The Cure and Tears for Fears. Deep lyrics, brooding vocals and shaved down instrumentals abound.
I’m assuming this was influential.
This just isn't my kind of music, nothing against the artist. It's ambitious and clearly going for some high-concept impact, but other than "Biko" I don't find myself engaging with it. Maybe that makes me lazy or makes this music too challenging. Or maybe it's pretentious and unapproachable. Either way I'm fine not returning to it.
This is the second Peter Gabriel album that I've gotten and I'm still not ready to give up finding an album of his that I will really enjoy. So far I've had a hard time connecting to his music. I think he is a great musician overall, but so far I'm not sure his stuff is for me.
Peter is trying so hard to be artistic and stand out that he alienates his entire sound into a caricature of itself. It doesn’t come across as fun or experimental, but more like a naive art student’s pathetic imitation of a past master. The lyrics don’t stand out in any way. The attempts at originality are lackluster and embarrassingly obvious. The writing and production are fairly on par with the time. I don’t typically enjoy Mr. Gabriel and this is one of his more disappointing outings. 2/5
idk what to think yet. i'm not loving intruder but family snapshot is pretty fine. games without frontiers is also nice.
Peter Gabriel is the first artist I get the second album in this series. Must say I like the previous entry, So, better.
Cat: he’s weird. I love his voice and what he’s saying but there’s a weird intensity and industrial sound that’s off putting. Not my fave by him. AJ: Two Words: Phil. Collins.
I've never listened or heard of this one before, so I'm excited.
Still not a fan of Prog Rock - this one especially. I'm not sure where the line is between progressive and appropriation, but Pete's flirting with it on this one.
It was an OK album. I did not recognize any of the songs. No need to revisit. Unsure why this album made the list.
decent...ish
I thought I liked Peter. Less so after listening to this.
Crap.
Started off ok, got a bit self indulgent towards the end. 2/5
Really not my style. Personally found it very boring.
I wanted to like it more than I actually liked it
I find myself unable to recall anything from this album. It probably would've been a 3 at best but incant remember a damn thing about it. A 2 because I don't recall hating it.
Mostly quite forgettable, not as enjoyable as the other Peter Gabriel we had.
Peter Gabriel just doing his do, nothing too noteworthy to me
A weird sound to start. Very experimental, as I know PG definitely was. If anything, I may have nightmares about the album art, but the music won't stick with me. Games Without Frontiers was the one notable track, and also the most popular track on Amazon Music.
Not very interesting
This is a junk album.
Ugh
most interesting thing about this is that its nickname is melty face.
boring
Peter Gabriel + Genesis = Fantastic. Apart, both bad. As is this ouvre.
Ok this album cover is scaring me a little but let's see what we're getting into. British post punk new wave art rock. Wow. My favourite. Sure man. Let's get into it. You know, I always end up with a backlog of albums to listen to because I get busy and forget this exists, then I listen to them and sure there's some slop in there, but as a whole it makes me remember why I love this project and I find some real gems. Then the last album is always, ALWAYS some bullshit that makes me want to forget about this again. What the fuck is this. I'm sure this was as groundbreaking as every other English album from the 70s and 80s, and I'm sure it was soooooo counterculture and groundbreaking and activist, but I just can't hear it man. I would compare this to him pulling his dick out and slapping it on the microphone, but I honestly think I might have enjoyed that more. At least I wouldn't have to listen to these dulcet tones. If you're going to sing about being a perverted stalkerish character watching a beautiful woman you at least have to be hot, even in an ugly way, or interesting. You are nether of these things, Mr. Gabriel. I also love when I write an essay of hate for an album after listening to the first track, then get to the second and actually kindve enjoy it. Reminds me a little of Phil Collins. Slightly above the dick slapping, miles above intruder. Ok this may be better than the first track but I think the reprieve from intruder may be skewing my taste because this isn't particularly good either. Why oh why does every Englishman think they're so different and edgy. Please stop. Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak, cabbage woman, Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill, Queen Lizzie (1 & 2), Meghan Markle, whoever's in charge nowadays, please you've got to put a stop to this. I don't like this. Oh Phil Collins actually helped on this. And was bandmates with this guy for a while. Hmm. Am I a musical genius. Holy shit this is ruining my mood. This is making me mad. I don't like this guy. What is this guy on about. Ruinin my fuckin day. Fuck offfffff. Favourite: And Through The Wire Least favourite: Intruder
Skillful and unique.. But there's no soul here.
Not one of us is the only standout on this album for me. I understand Games Without Frontiers and Biko's popularity but they're just not to my taste. The rest of the album comes across as needlessly atonal and too experimental to be really listenable for me.
favs: i don’t remember rating 0.5/5
Hated it x
Only listened to the beginning, didn’t luke it
Lackluster
Kinda crap
Like Phil collins. Absolutely no.
Aika puuroa
Sencillamente no canta bien.
As much as I try, I just cannot get into Peter Gabriel..
Slop. Why is this on here?
Tal indikerer sang 1. Creepy. 6. And through the wire. Games without frontiers. Spøjst at tælle 1-2-4. Not one of us. Starter underligt men virker faktisk ok. Lead a normal life. Biko. Underlig start men ellers ok.
Good Halloween album but not for me
The 80s. Peter Gabriel. It's just not my sound.
1. intruder - 1.5 2. control - 1 3. ztart - 0 4. remember - 1.5 5. family - 1.5 6. uuire - 1 7. gamez - 1 8. uz - 1 9. life - 1 10. biko - 1.5
I've never liked Peter Gabriel, neither liked him... This was a weird album...
1/10. Basic and extremely dated. Wouldn’t listen to this ever again😭
Sounds like a really bad David Bowie impression.
Nobody needed or wanted Peter Gabriel 1. That there are two (or more) sequels is truly horrifying
A very unique album
Kinda background noise didnt even register.
weird
Peter Gabriel 3 is shit. Peter Gabriel is shit, Genesis are shit, this has no redeeming features.
Nah
No, not for me.
It just sucks. Pete, I really don't enjoy your music.
I can’t even finish the first song without wanting to turn it off.
Nah!
Too weird for me.
Least favorite PG album ever - however, looking forward to his other weird shit
Ikke min greie. Opplevde albumet som uharmonisk og rotete.
Idk if I like his vibes
weird
This is the music they play in Insane Asylums in movies. Why is ‘Start’ not the first song on the album? By the time it got to ‘I don’t remember’ I was wishing I didn’t remember having listened to this album. Peter Gabriel sings like a deaf person. These songs have no right being as long as they are. I would have preferred sitting in a padded room for the duration of the album, then I could justify how repetitive these pretentious ass songs were. 2/10
Not a fan. Quit after 3 songs ...
Unlistenable
No
I can't stand this genre. 80s new wave/post punk with some "art rock" sprinkled in. Absolute wanker music. The final track was kinda cool but everything else was a chore to sit through.
Not for me.
boring..
I'd like to award five stars to the bloke on cowbell in Family Snapshot and one star to the rest of this utter atrocity of an album
when do i get elliott smith
I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS
