Reviews (page 6 of 7)

There are 1000 artists people should hear before they die. Two albums by Peter Gabriel?? So is a classic. PG 1-4 have sublime heights but a lot of filler.

Two Peter Gabriel albums in a row (1 and 3). I like 3 (aka Melt) better than 1. It's supposedly more experimental but I found it more listenable. Enjoyed "I Don’t Remember" and "Games Without Frontiers". "Family Snapshot" was very interesting (and disturbing).

Meh. More 80s white guy rock.

The influence on popular music after this is apparent but most of this album falls flat.

that was nice :)) a good experience and a nice vibe 3*

I really liked “ I Don’t Remember” and “ and through the wire” but other than that I thought the album was so so.

Whatever I was doing in the 70’s, it did not include Genesis ( the book or the band). I missed the band altogether. So my real introduction to Peter Gabriel was via his debut solo album, which I actually purchased brand new because I was in love with Solisbury Hill. For me, it’s still the best thing he ever did. Although, to be fair, I really only know some of his singles. I sold that first album on, once I found a copy of Solisbury Hill on a single. His second album is a mystery to me. And from this, his third album, I only know Games Without Frontiers & Biko. I really like Games Without Frontiers. Great tune. And I love the idea & the politics behind Biko, although I prefer Sweet Honey In The Rock’s Biko, released the year after this. I’ve listened to the rest of the album & it’s a good listen, but not a thrilling one for me.

Some early New Wave, World music. He always seemed very experimental to me.

I don't remember any song from this album. Have I listened it?

This was a pretty good listen, without being overly outstanding. I definitely feel the second half was stronger than the opening. I'm unlikely to rush out to put this on again, but would certainly not mind it being put in my rotation. A mid to high 3.

It was a good album! I think I wouldn’t listen to it again, but there were some spots I was giving.

This album had great instrumentals, but the lyrics could be repetitive at time.

2.5/5. Meh. It's got some cool sounds, but it's not something I have any desire to listen to. I could see how people would be into this. The last song was definitely a bit unnecessary.

There was some pretty interesting shit going on here. There was also a lot of dumb boring shit. Diet Bowie at times. 3 because it's pretty even with its good and its bad crap. 3

The album starts with an experimental piece and doesn’t seem to get its true footing until the fifth track. It just feels like the band as a whole just held back. Once Gabriel and his band show their strength, they do go full force. Some good stuff here. Mid 3.

I didn't go into this with high expectations at all but I was overall pleasantly surprised. I didn't necessarily love the album but it's not bad, I especially like the first song.

interesting but not my favourite i think? although the first track was nice and felt nostalgic

Spannendes Album.

Interesting arrangement ideas, seems more a product of its time rather than withstanding the tests of time though. Good for some arrangement ideas though.

Yes mush

Eh. Gabriel always feels like a guy on the edge of greatness. Like... he's ALMOST legendary but something about the way he constructs songs holds him back and leaves me scratching my head. To be clear: there's nothing wrong with any of these songs. They just don't slap. There's not a banger in the bunch. They're all just... okay. But they feel like they SHOULD be great and that's actually really frustrating. Anyway, it's a middling album. Minus one for super cheesy saxophone solos. Sorry, Peter.

Lots of folks love Peter Gabriel but it's just pure cheese for me. Competent and what it does but I ain't eating that.

A moody experimental sounding album. Requires repeat listening as there is a lot of interesting stuff going on. Second half of the album is my favourite of the two. I think the melodies are more appealing.

Started slow for me, but it grew on me.

- This kinda slaps - Love the blend in sounds and electronic elements that are added - Vocals really fit the music well - No Self Control is my favorite

Didn't love it, didn't hate it.

Twas ok

Hitsen är ju klassiker. I övrigt en okej skiva.

To some extent, good. A lot more experimental and complex that I could have expected

Some interesting instrument choices, but not my favourite of his work

Pretty wacky album

Standouts: Biko, Games Without Frontiers, Family Snapshot Others: Intruder, No Self Control, I Don't Remember, Not One of Us 3.5/5

Pretty decent, dug the detuned / somewhat dark/trippy vibes

Sort of weird and nightmarish. Complex instrumentation. Not exactly likable, it’s mostly dissonant. Biko is a fascinating track, love the slow drums, the bagpipes in the background, the repetitive lyrics, the vocal sounds, it’s a brilliant blend of sounds into a droning and somehow uplifting dirge.

This was so much trippier and interesting than I expected somebody associated with Phil Collins to produce. Maybe he's the anti-Collins and he had to leave Genesis to get away from him. Hard to pin down from one listen, it was full of ideas and took a lot of unexpected turns. A bit industrial and heavy in parts but then quite a bit of 80s sax too I think. Didn't blow me away like some other prog on this list but certainly didn't offend me like some other prog on this list.

More experimental sounding than I thought it would be. First half was the stronger side for me, gets pretty weird in that latter half. Highlights: I Don't Remember Not One Of Us

Thought I'd have some kind of reaction to this but overall just thought it was a bit noting, some of it I didn't like, some of it I didn't mind.

This was a pretty good album. I know Gabriel from his more mainstream hits. This album was all fresh but it still had a similar sound of his singing ability shining through. The production was very unique and original on some songs. It felt kind of blue collar on some songs. There are some good catch songs on this album and I’d revisit it. 7.0/10

3 stars

Never heard much of Peter Gabriel, not bad, pretty cool tracks, dig his voice and delivery

Strange and provocative at the same time. Love the instrumentation and cool drums and synths. Can hear some beginnings of the mid to late 80s Peter Gabriel in the making. But some of these songs are hard to follow.

Wasn't bad. Nothing new stuck with me. The single is still good.

Didn't grab me, but never wanted to turn it off. It's fine.

If you only ever listen to one Peter Gabriel album…listen to ‘So’. It is immaculate with the right mix of artsy, avant-garde, world and straight pop/rock songs, all done right. This on the other hand doesn’t quite hit those heights. It’s interesting for sure, and full of great ideas, but it’s not necessarily enjoyable as a whole. I feel this way about a lot of his early solo work.

Less eclectic and more settled on his 1980s style. Interesting and at times arresting for it’s lyrical content. I didn’t know Kate Bush sang the “Jeux Sans Frontieres” line.

Pop music like it should be! Unfortunately it was not enough

Really nice

Peter Gabriel thinks he David Bowie. He's not.

Pop progresivo. Ni fu ni fa.

Progressive pop. Rollo.

I appreciate the Peter Gabriel drum sound heard round the world and his pop sensibilities, this is enough of his albums now though

This isn't a bad album but I'm not sure about regular rotation. Standouts include I Don't Remember, Family Snapshot, Through The Wire and Battles Without Frontiers.

Dark and creepy. Twisting and turning. Sometimes a bit cheesy and "of its time". 'Games Without Frontiers' is great. Decent listen, lovely stuff. 3 / 5 stars.

Liked the strong bass lines, felt very 80s and mostly just passed by without much to note

Intruder- A dark song, murky vibe. The feel is of an intruder being welcome to dare try and enter the singers house (6) No Self Control- The murky theme continues, but now it is more fearful, the singer talking about his problems and addictions, and how he can’t control himself (7.5) Start- A pleasant interlude, with much more livliness to it, but the dark keys remain (7.5) I Don’t Remember- From goth to more hard rock, still keeping a dark theme, about not being able to remember (5) Family Snapshot- A deeper song with more purpose, very nice drums (8) And Through The Wire- A sort of love song, with crooning about how someone is very close but so far at the same time (7.5) Games Without Frontiers- A song about having no barriers, maybe a parallel to being vulnerable, as he mentions if looks could kill they would, about a partner?? (6.5) Not One Of Us- The vibe at this point has completely flipped, being more new rock. The song touches the topic of someone who walks within a group, but is a fake (8) Lead A Normal Life- Ironically one of the most complex, deepest songs on the album. With so little words Gabriel sets the mood for pondering and reflecting on his life, on how it would be to live like a normal person (9) Biko- The ending to the album, with a very broody but jungle vibe? An interesting track (7.5) Summary: Haven’t heard anything like this, an interesting listen; OVERALL: 7/10

Interesting, good

I have always had a difficult relationship with Peter Gabriel, just overall. His lyrics don't speak to me and his music doesn't always either. Sometimes the lyrics are great and I don't like the music or (more likely) the music is entertaining but the lyrics evade my interests. I'm not sure if this is Peter Gabriel's best album or the album that must be heard over "So," though this mixes his artsy and pop instincts better than that record.

I've given Peter Gabriel a 5 on this project before, but in saying that I'm pretty unbiased. I think Genesis was at its creative peak with him singing, and he's obviously a quiet genius living in the shadow of Phil Collins. Underrated, at least in relative terms. That being said, this album was only mildly interesting. I forgot it was playing for a good half of it, only really enjoyed the first 2 songs and the last. Rest was a blur. 3/5.

Very uneven for me. Lots to love, lots to hate. Best track: Games Without Frontiers

And Through the Wire andGames without Frontiers were neat

The album seemed a bit too experimental for my liking, so I ended up only half-heartedly listening to it in the background. "Biko" however made it all worthwhile, that song alone deserves all the stars.

This was the first solo album by Peter Gabriel that I would call 'good'. Some of the tracks, like Games Without Frontiers and Biko are even outstanding. However, there is still too much unfocused, quirky experimentation here. One more album would follow before Gabriel's first real masterpiece album 'So'. 3/5

There are some good songs on this, and I appreciate his experimental, slightly less accessible ones.

It's nice, but nothing special. Too eighties for me at some points.

3.7 - Listening to this album feels like unearthing some forgotten artwork sitting in a musty closet. You admire its outlines as you stare reverentially, remembering the charms hidden in its forms and its composition. But on second pass, you notice how the details have eroded over time, and lost much of their original sparkle. Production-wise, I hear echoes of Eno's ambience on tracks like "Lead a Normal Life" (my favorite on the record), as well as Byrne's rhythm focus on "No Self Control" (which features Kate Bush, another clear inspiration). But I don't love the gurgling fretless bass sound reminiscent of Jaco Pistorius. And I find the overall mix very muddy, making the whole record sound a little dated, maybe even a little musty. And Gabriel's voice to me sounds tired here. I'm happy to give this record an admiring glance but back in that musty closet it goes!

Never been a huge fan, but this was fine.

much darker than his other albums, also like a bit more than the previous albums of his on this list, still get's a bit samey by the midway point and not something I'd ever seek out again. - really don't think there needs to be 3 albums by Peter Gabriel here, shows the compiler was struggling a bit. 3.4

Hadn't listened to his one before. It's tough - there's no Solsbury Hill, here. And Through the Wire works well and the rest of it is very Peter Gabriel-ish, there's no let down there. But since we know he's got songs that burrow all the way down into your bones, this isn't that. The album cover is also top notch.

I like the post-Genesis sound of this album and the production is really good, but nothing stands out. I like the album as a whole but it's hard to push it up to four stars.

Gabriel loves that 80s echoing snare. Some of the album was a little too experimental, but some of the songs were very enjoyable.

This is an interesting album that definitely had mental breakdown written all over it. Games Without Frontiers and Lead a Normal Life were the two standouts to me. Peter Gabriel has an all time singing voice.

Peter Gabriel seems like a guy who would take a fistful of whatever drugs you wanted to hand to him with no questions. There was nothing special about this album to me until the last 3 or 4 songs then it started getting spooky and good

Didn't know what to expect from this but he definitely can make some jams. Nothing crazily stood out to me but definitely enjoyed it on my ride in to Annapolis.

Pop. Rock. Un poco aburrido.

I like Talking Heads too Peter

An ok album - not his best, not his worst.

Not Peter Gabriel's best material in my opinion. In fact, I rated PG1 5 stars and one of his Genesis albums 4 stars earlier on. PG3 seems to be a bit too artsy (and too edgy) for its own good. There are some good ideas, but the whole thing just doesn't quite come together well. I've heard quite good covers of Games Without Frontiers and Biko in completely different styles though.

this album really signifies a clear midway point between the early Genesis works of prog geinus in Selling England by the Pound and Foxtrot, and the later Gabriel/Collins pop hits. We have the misty, reverb-heavy drums of \"In The Air Tonight\", while still having structures and chord progressions reminiscent of Gabriel's earlier works.

Never was super into PG, but a few good songs.

I like Peter Gabriel and I guess I have generally positive feelings about gated reverb on drums but I was disappointed by this one. I gave PG1:Car 5 stars a couple of months ago and was looking forward to hearing more from him. But I found this offering a bit dull and droning, no Salisbury Hill or Sledgehammer to elevate it past middle marks.

Gabriel solo feels far more enjoyable than Gabriel in Genesis. Much like his first solo album, Gabriel tends to try a range of different styles and genres which showcases his musical ability but doesn't always lead to a cohesive listen. There is a bleakness to the mood and themes, however. And Through the Wire is a catchy rock number - you sense Gabriel could make an album of strong numbers just like this with ease - and Games Without Frontiers is a weirdly radio unfriendly popular hit which is unsettling and abrasive. An interesting, intelligent and idiosyncratic album.

Decent music. I like Peter Gabriel's style, but none of these songs stood out for me in particular I'd say. Intruder was sufficiently creepy though, what a way to start an album.

Not the best petey gabby

Balances the proclivities for proggy noodling with some post punk tautness to make an enjoyable enough album, still far too mawkish for mine.

1980. Acclaimed as Gabriel's artistic breakthrough. He banned the cymbals to be more creative.

Do you like marimba? Then this is the album for you because I have never heard so much of it on any other album before. It is interesting at first but by the fifth song with it, it becomes old and repetitive. I appreciate incorporating global influences into the music, but this is more miss than hit for me.

3 Peter Gabriels too many. I don't really like this. I'm sure at the time it was better, but, like the other one I've had, it's dated and a bit dull.

I think it’s not really for me, but at least I like And through the wire, great guitar riff and just the perfect guitar tone!

Meh. I liked Peter Gabriel 1 better.

Peter Gabriel was a little fucking weirdo in the 80s and time has not altered that perception. Outside of the one hit in this album (Games Without Frintiers) the rest of the tracks are mediocre at best and down right annoying at worst. Plus 1 for the hit.

Interesting but nothing was outstanding. You can definitely see flashes of what came later.

boring

2/5 Favorite Song: And Through the Wire

Better than I though 2.5

I love Peter Gabriel, but this album just wasn’t for me.

This was more annoying than anything else.

Over-produced simple songs with whimsical lyrics and dark overtones. Meh.

I liked what it was trying to do more than what it did.

No 'Solsbury Hill': minus 2 stars.

y el Peter Gabriel 5?

This album was fine and ultimately very forgettable. It's cool to know that I restrained Phil Collins was drumming on this album. Aside from that: whatever!

Album sounds the way the cover looks, so... points for that I guess? Otherwise, glad Pete took his musical sensibilities out of Genesis so I don't have to listen to weird shit like this while I try to enjoy Phil Collins.

Not my thing

I wrote no notes while listening to this and two hours after finishing, I can barely remember the experience. I remember sort of liking Intruder and finding Not One of Us on the nose. I mean, it was all fine I guess, better than the other album of his I have listened to, So. But it's all too overwrought and belaboured for my taste.

Peter Midriel

Games Without Frontiers is a good song, but the rest is pretty forgettable IMO.

Bored to death. Really liked Start's air instruments but other than that, I dont really like Peter's music. Nothing personal, Peter

Not really my thing, like a worse David Bowie. But I appreciated the variety of sound from the album rather than just being a straight art rock/pop album, so it gets a 2.5 rounded down.

This is one of those albums where if you ignore the lyrics, it sounds great. But the lyrics can only be described as creepy, as if Gabriel envisioned this as a concept album for being a stalker.

Experimenteel. En dat is aanvankelijk natuurlijk geinig. Na een tijdje denk je 'jaja'. En uiteindelijk zeg ik morgen 'I don't remember, I don't recall'.

I tried to get into this on several occasions and it never connected for me. So I’ve moved on. 2.5

Like with a lot of albums from that time - while the music is solid, the vocals - not so much.

This confirms I am not a fan of progrock, but at least it's not as boring as Genesis. Still, not for me.

Very Peter Gabriel, lots of glockenspiel, didn't really wow me

It aight

One song sounds like africa by toto. Very 80s ablum

Peter Gabriel, and Genesis in general, simply isn’t for me.

I liked 2 songs from this album: No And Through the Wire, Not One of Us; I did not enjoy the others, there's something with the random sounds or rhythm I did not like.

As much as I enjoy Genesis as a band, this just simply isn't a good album. Droned out guitars and terrible vocals.

Too artsy fartsy for me

i've heard a lot about mr gabriel and was expecting better. maybe a bit too experimental or just not my taste (more 80's hehe)

According to Wikipedia, this album "saw Gabriel embracing post-punk and new wave with an art rock sensibility." That might be the most effective statement to predispose me to hating an album. And Mr. Gabriel did not disappoint! I don't understand the British obsession with prog rock (call it art house, new wave, post-punk, whatever - that's what this is); maybe it appeals to their natural arrogance or self-grandizing (for the Empire!). But I find it absolutely irritating. This album is an absolute assault on the very concept of melody, it's terribly over-produced, and the lyrics are nearly nonsensical ("we're kissing balloons in the jungle"). And then we get Biko. A lovely and powerful tribute to the slain anti-apartheid activist, Steve Biko. Can it salvage this album? No, nothing can do that. But it helped me not completely evicerate it. Influence 4. Hits 2. Intangibles 3. Quality 2. Nope 2.

...and then sometimes weird is just weird

Its fine. first track didnt reel me in but it warmed up a bit. probably a 2.5

With every Peter Gabriel album on this list I'm starting to think less and less about his artistic abilites.

Pretty shit tbh 2/10

I'm just not a Peter Gabriel fan, I'm afraid.

This one just didn't really hit for me. It's almost too experimental for what I can only assume was an album created to sell. I found it hard to pay attention. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again

Not a lot grabbed me though I knew Games. It's okay.

I’m not much of a solo Peter Gabriel fan it seems.

80’s before the 80’s were the 80’s…

It was an OK album, but it's still classic Peter Gabriel - lots of filler. Neat that Kate Bush was on this album. Cool album cover and the wiki read on that was interesting. I'll say 2.

Not really my cup of tea. Lots of drums...lots of aiiiaiiiaeieiiieiiiii

Meh. I didn’t really like it.

I like the cover of Peter Gabriel 2 better…

Don’t tell Eduardo but I’m not really a fan of Peter Gabriel after he left genesis. Admittedly, there are some good moments on this and when it was on I didn’t dislike most of it. I guess that’s damming with faint praise.

It's fine. Not something I'm going to come back to. 5/10

It’s like Phil Collins and Lenny Kravitz found a xylophone and then wanted to be Billy Joel.

I really only know "In Your Eyes" so I had some expectations going into this album but not really a lot. The songs are a bit... bizarre? Why does the first song have weird xylophone motifs throughout..? It sounds misplaced. The album isn't my favorite it just seems like he's trying to be cool and it comes off weird

Known for having the name of an angel but not angelic to me.

Not for me, but had some unique soundscapes

At its best, it's like a Gary Numan vibe. Never been a massive fan, but I listened twice which is an indication of something. It was alright but loses a point for having the same name as his other albums. What a wanker.

mauvais album pour une mauvaise journée, how fitting

The electronic sounds going on throughout the album don't really work for me. If not for that It feels almost like a Duran Duran album or something like that. Not much from this album that left an impression enough that I will remember or think about after today.

Could have lived without this

Very 80s. Didn't like it.

Games without frontiers was good. Everything else was kinda lame

Wasn’t in the mood for artsy dog warter music

I feel like I need a perm and shoulder pads to listen to this

asoo hans album im regio richtig asti glost und muss sege hans nöd würkli gnosse d kreativität isch definitiv daa gsi aber v.a. biko ischmer recht ufd nerve gange hans gfühl ide richtige mood wärs es 3 aber han gmerkt, dassi kei bock han zums nomal lose, drum 2, sorry vorname vorname

Wow. I think I lost some respect for Peter Gabriel after listing to this album.

Peter Gabriel, _3_ ⭐️⭐️ Undeniably nice music for your stereo circa 1980, but ultimately incohesive and boring. Straight-up boomer music heralding the coming of very self-serious AOR and VH1 content for the white people who weren't young or plugged-in enough for the scads of cooler new wave, postpunk records emerging. World music, international political causes, and then some interesting electronic-infused music to go along with it. This is like the record KBCO was founded on, for the four people who will understand what that reference. So, like, would you rather listen to the voice of the youth in U2, INXS, The Cars or something you can dance or rock to... or listen to a rousing chant about Stephen Biko and the South African struggle? Most dated, dumbest track of the record: _Games Without Frontiers_. Really it's deeply stupid as it just rattles off children's names who apparently are stand-ins for warmongering world leaders. It hits a number of marks: egregious waste of Kate Bush talent. Pointless use of French (at least Talking Heads and The Police made it sound cool _and_ it sorta had a point). Probably the silliest 1980s radio airplay single and that's saying something for the 80s.

Music to sit on hold to

I've gotten quite used to every song sounding the same on an album, but this is new, almost every song is completely different from the other And it's bad!! I liked Intruder, would've liked a bit more of that. The rest is not that memorable

Intruder: kinda super mid No self control: instrumentals are good, the lyrics are bad, the sitging is worse Okay, the singing is so unpleasant i think this is a dnf, kinda disappointing for my first album maybe i'll stick it out Lead a normal life: good tappies

Standout Songs: Family Snapshot And Through The Wire Did not really enjoy this one, especially the first handful of songs. I don’t really like art/experimental rock.

Love the music, I don’t resonate with the voice. Sorry PG, you are amazing even if I only throw a 2 star review out there

Shite.

I didn't hate this, but I also didn't really like it.

Games without frontiers Y Ya no pillé más

This album gives the vibe of a loner who committed an anti-social crime in his early twenties. After years incarcerated in solitary confinement, he has been released and is scrambling to get 25 years worth of thoughts down on paper. Levels out a bit later on in the album, but it is a bit shambolic for my liking.

Had the odd moment. I guess you had to be there at the time. Just seems drag too much.

Bought this album back in the eighties and enjoyed it but didn't blow me away. Gave it another go and it feels a bit dated and none of the tracks stand out IMO. So would not describe it as a classic worthy of a high position in the chart - love Peter Gabriel but not one of his best - listen to SO instead!

Unique timbre. Not for me.

p455. 1980. 2 stars. Not his best work by any means, far too much filler to make this a repeat listen. Saved from 1 star by the handful of decent songs and one hit. He got better as he went on.

In theo to y I should love this album and Peter Gabriel, I love progressive music, I love art rock, and I like post punk, of which this album has a hint, but I just didn't enjoy it. And I have a hard time like Peter Gabriel in general. I can appreciate the experimentation and some of the textures created are very interesting but it is never satisfying in fact it's kind of boring and at times even cringe. It is strange, if I approach it rationally I think his music is alright, but if I approach it emotionally I feel it lacks. Perhaps it's the quality of his voice and the tone of the instrumentation. I can't pinpoint what it is but I listened to the whole album 3 times and 3 times I got excited by what I heard and looked to see what song it was and it turned out to be a Spotify suggestion after the album had finished. Oh well...

definitely was not what i was expecting from a co founder of genesis, and i was surprised at first! but then of course because peter gabriel was in genesis, the music turns to shit :((( here’s a bunch of artists who achieved what this album was going for and more BEFORE this album: David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Brian Eno, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and GARY FREAKIN NUMAN. halfway through, you’ll be thinking, “why am i still listening to this?”

Let’s be honest, it’s a bit dull isn’t it! This one probably should have stayed in the ‘80s

The positive is that there was a mixture of styles. The negatives are absolutely everything else! The music is very dull and I struggle to understand how it was popular back in the day.

80s rock, don't care for it

okay….. idk

I listened to it....honestly who the hell is Peter and why should I care about him???? 3???

This is another one that is probably better in the historical context of the artist's discography. But as a single experience it is just alright. I'm not mad at it.

I was prepared to throw this album on the trash heap of new wave after a few minutes, but it grew on me a tiny bit. I still can't say I enjoyed it, but I was able to make it all the way through the album, so there's that. 2.4

It it probably my frame of mind, but I just was not connecting with this one.

Eh it was alright, didn't really grab my attention much. Some of the production was neat, some of it was dog. The dissonant guitar on Intruder sucked ass. Favourites - I Don't Remember, Not One Of Us Least Favourites - Intruder

Un po' anni 80

Artisti saavuttaa tällä levyllä jotain. Mutta vaikka formaalisti kaikki on kunnossa, en vieläkään onnistu murtautumaan hänen esteettiseen universumiinsa, eivätkä hänen melodiansa puhuttele kehoani. Sinänsä toimiva levy. 2,5

this is the last peter gabriel album i have on this list, and let's just say that if i have my way it'll be the last i ever hear of peter gabriel

Pretty genetic (from Russia Standards?).. not something i would listen to again..

It's unique I'll give you that, and probably does deserve a place on this list (especially compared to some of the shite I've heard already), but it's just not for me at all.

I’m only one track in, but I’m getting the back to the future vibe of him playing this at an ‘under the sea’ school dance to no reaction but Timmy Reznar holding the phone up for his cousin The later cowbell section stops that comparison dead

His Masterpiece? So be it. Ear of the beholder… I think it’s over indulgent, overrated, and boring. I could easily sleep to it, making it worthy of 2 stars.

It's certainly something

idk jst not my vibe.

A slog. Didn’t care for this at all. Could be the first or the tenth Gabriel on the list so far. Who knows.

NO soy muy fan

I like Genesis but somehow I dislike Peter Gabriel's solo music. I have watched the recording of one or two of his concerts and yes, they are good. But his music alone, I don't really like it that much.

Not sure I really loved this; seemed a bit too experimental for my taste. I wanted to like it more but none of the content jumped at me. Seems a bit overrated based on the other reviews left by others here. 5/10.

Peter Gabriel, Genesis and Phil Collins ... their good stuff is impeccable, brilliant, classic and everlasting ... and their bad stuff is ... incredibly disappointing just. like. this. album. But I really do like the cover art.

I guess that cover art warned us that Peter Gabriel was going for unsettling. But the melting creepiness really only lasted for two songs. Three, if you consider a short instrumental sax solo titled “Start” at track three to be unsettling. It all felt pretty Gabriel-y after that.

On the cusp of a transition to a new decade, Gabriel wanted to make an album for the 80s. It did not start well. It took until I Don’t Remember (track 4) to get interesting and again to Not One Of Us (track 8) for a song I could get into. The only other song I like is the last, Biko, which is my favorite. As far as kick starting the 80s, I rail on 80s pop all the time, so it’s not like this is out of step with the decade.

It’s not terrible, but most of this feels like he’s more interested in incorporating “new” sounds rather than making a song with any kind of feeling or fun.

Peters typical ethereal pop/rock

This album was a bit weird for me; I love Peter Gabriel from childhood, so I thought I’d be positively inclined toward this album. The big hit “Games without Frontiers” is not my favorite of his songs. I liked some of the other songs in this album-overall a bit weird/discordant (the sax was not my jam on this particular disc), but appreciated the experimental nature of it. It was hard to pay attention to.

Not my cup of tea today.

Good opportunity to listen to some Peter Gabriel, which I'm embarrassed to say I haven't listened to him much other than "In Your Eyes." Opening track has sort of dark vibe complete somehow with those little plucky finger marimbas (idk what they're actually called). "Family Snapshot" really reminds me of Bruce Springsteen for some reason? Maybe the driving guitar and the saxophone. Honestly with three songs left in my listening, there's not much that stands out to me on this album. Maybe the last three songs will change my mind? Although he could not anticipate it, "Lead a Normal Life" at first sounded like that factory setting iphone ringtone...ha. I was looking forward to "Biko" and thought maybe that could be a highlight of the album for me because I love a good "movement" song. But I found it honestly a little boring. I feel kind of like an asshole being so "meh" about it but what are you gonna do, like everything?

Yes and No. Its very Peter Gabriel. Lots of sax and keyboard and wailing soft sounds. Which can be enjoyable and put you in a state of lull. But it can also be just a bit much. My rating would be 2.5 but will have to round down because I don't think I ever need to listen to this album again.

A few decent ideas here that I found interesting, but nothing that I plan on returning for

I can see where this was influential but not for me

Not a huge fan of this sort of self-absorbed early 80s stuff which takes itself too seriously

At 46 y.o, i'm tired of pretending i like stuff because i "have to." PG is one of those artists I just never got into even though people say its genius. To hell with what Patrick Bateman said in American Psycho.

Not a fan.

Good. But not my cup of tea

Mr Gabriel, I did not much care for this

Enjoyed certain tracks but there was nothing for me to grab on to.

Peter Gabriel what the hell is this? Why is it so dark and spooky in places? I feel like Cronenberg commissioned this for a movie he never made. I cant figure it out, its like trying to be pretentious and mainstream at the same time, every time I get into a song for a bit it turns around on me. Not One of Us is okay.

I mean… this album felt pretty up it’s own ass. It sets the tone of the 80s being a really shitty industrial time for some music. I enjoyed the last couple songs but overall it wasn’t very good. Family Snapshot wtf was that song?!?

Sometimes an album deserves more than just a cursory listen, and continues to get better over time. Sometimes you listen to half of the album and then turn it off. Guess which this is.

I like PG's sound a lot but this album didn't grab me. About half of the songs are good and half of them are completely unmemorable. I'm not here for the politics but that's likely why it's on the list. I didn't know Kate Bush did backing vocals on a few or that Hipgnosis did the cover art but both make sense and are a good addition. Will round up to 2.25.

Pete likes to get weird and write some abstract shit but I'm just not that into this phase in his career. It's kinda boring. The political stance he takes may be why this album gets on the list? "Game without Frontiers" is a decent track but little else grabbed me. I'm looking forward to his later work that should make the list...1.65.

Ez nem tudott megfogni valahogy. Számomra egyszerre elég avantgárd és jellegtelen (ami fura kombó). Nem tudtam kapcsolódni hozzá semmilyen szinten.

https://youtu.be/ijoeNHFF07M the fight breaks at 3:16 Ultraje a Rigor >>>>> Peter Gabriel

Quite a boring listen personally, no matter how innovative it is.

Not my taste, it's experimental but not in a good way. Not a single standout song, but it's bad enough to be 1.

I liked 1986 "Sledgehammer"

This is the reason I don’t like 80s music. This is the corniness that drives me away and makes me dislike 80s music in such a blanketed fashion. It’s not bad enough for a 1, but it’s close.

'Start' almost felt like a Kenny G album piece. 'Family Snapshot' sounds more like an easy listening ballad. Then other pieces just strange mix of styles. Melt probably is a better label for the album.

Yeah still not understanding how this guy works. Love some of his singles out there but he goes down some weird avenues with his music.

The first half was horrible unless from start. The second half had few strong songs but his voice was pretty annoying and destroyed the joy from everything else.

Weinig spanning of verrassende momenten. Biko unieke afsluiter. 5,5/10 Highlights Family snapshot Biko

First listen Saved 2/10 Top track: No Self Control

A lot of weird sounds (not a good album to drive with) and nothing extremely standout. Not a huge favorite but interesting enough to not hate it.

its ok

Never a good sign when it takes a month and give attempts to get through an album. There's nothing wrong with this album and I quite like Games Without Frontiers, but it's mostly so dull I just feel like listening to something else.

A fine album, quite imaginative but not much to keep me locked into it. 4/10

Read that he was the singer of Genesis, which makes complete sense since this sounds very much like Phil Collins - only worse. Found some half decent songs in 'I Don't Remember' and 'Games Without Frontiers', the latter which whistle tune might have been sampled in Mange Schimdt's 'Giftig' song. Overall I didn't like this record very much. It felt a bit pretentious, which you can get away with that if the music is really good, otherwise not.

Has some good moments and some very annoying ones as well.

It’s never good when the best song is the single.

I was a lot more receptive to this than his first two records on this list, maybe I can dig more the transition in to the 1980s. But this still isn't great but it's fine.

Was mostly familiar with Peter Gabriel's bigger hits from later in the 80s, & was intrigued by the post-punk, proto-New Wave description of this album. But this ended up sounding super dissonant with overwrought vocals & out of place saxophones. Do not want.

GWF always jarred very badly & never tempted me to explore the rest of the album. Right decision.

Strange mix of sounds. Not the traditional Peter Gabriel. Into more experimental sounds at times. Also kinda sounded like a discount Phil Collin’s a-la Tarzan soundtrack. Also heard some Bruce Springsteen in there. Another pass over record for me.

Not a lot there. Just uninspired

not for me

Nothing terrible but I did not connect with it at all! Sorry!

So so much better in Genesis. Never liked his solo stuff much. 2/5

"Intruder's happy in the daaaa(uuu)aa(uuu)aaaaark" en later lekker schor "I'm shooting into the Liii(jjj)iiiiiii(jjjj)iiiiiiigh(t)".

Consegui perceber a qualidade, só não me empolgou.

I'm sorry, but you can do better than this Peter. I'm just glad, I don't have to listen to this album ever again.

Not my thing

Um…. Ok

Peter Gabriel…I’m just not a huge fan, I guess.

Went into listening to this thinking that I'd be coming out fighting on behalf of PG, but this is really turgid, isn't it? this is like a Genesis album without the depth and structure, and the synth is about as dated as you can possibly get. 2/5, not unlistenable but I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

eh. more prog rock.

There’s a lot of anxiety and tension on this album. The music sounds on edge. As with the other Peter Gabriel and Genesis albums on this list, I found it fascinating but also hard to fully enjoy. It’s too pretentious, too preoccupied with ideas and not focused enough on the emotions and melodies. Gabriel is clearly brilliant and there are a lot of moments and production details that are cool here. But overall I appreciated it at a distance and didn’t connect much with it.

Peter Gabriel 2.5

Expected to like this more than I did.

Another one trick album - that trick being the track with all the streams, and it's brilliant. The rest feels like standard 1980's filler fare

Just couldn't get into this one. 2/5

In not sure I liked this that much

Only got to the first song which I didn’t like so I’ll listen to the rest later!

I wanted to DNF this based on the first song, which is actual dogwater. I looked at the reviews, and all the 5's had me feeling like I was missing something. Gave it another chance this morning, and after a full listen through, it's not actual dogwater... just not my cup of tea in the slightest. It manages to raise to a two after pushing past the horrific start. I don't think I like "art rock".

A couple cool songs but some really strange/uninteresting ones too

I've had it with this bloke. Genesis sucked with him, he had a handful of great solo moments and not a one can be found here. OK, fine. Maybe I can give him Games Without Frontiers. But then I remembered this guy can't even be bothered to properly name his albums. Fuck him. We don't have to like him just because Kate Bush does. Remember that when Peter Gabriel dies and the world loses their collective shit like he was another David Bowie.

Interesting album. Dated asf but Biko was my favourite.

Started off rough for me but got better as the album went on.

The bad 80s

Not on Spotify

Favourite song - I don't remember

I was not feeling this album not sure why just didn’t hold my attention.

Not for me

I like Peter Gabriel, but not this album.

Very intense, not in the mood

2/5. This album had no quality songs until we got to Biko. Which was enough to pull this album to a firm 2 stars.

Kind of unique and not what I expected. But also not great.

More Gabriel?!? C’mon! The amount of records some artists have is just so ridiculous. We heard So and that is all you need from solo Gabriel. I don't care for his try-too-hard experimentalism. I prefer when he swims in poppier waters. Meh.

Peter Gabriel is amazing. This album is not. Very silly songs, like some lukewarm parody of the dumbest prog rock.

I really like Genesis, and I enjoy some of Peter Gabriel's solo work, but I was not particularly moved by this album.
