Reviews (page 5 of 7)
Very pleasant album but I don’t know why this album is recommended over her debut album in 1965. That album is vastly superior. This album was nice but there were some very iffy song choices such as that parade song. This choice was wack and makes me think whoever complied this list and that book is a big dumb dumb. i mean they recommended coldplay, hole, and ryan adams, which 1001 albums is a lot of albums so i guess you have room to spare. however i don’t think those albums were necessary to hear before i died ://////
"Beach Samba" is a studio album by Brazilian singer Astrud Giberto. This album is a mixture of Brazilian songs translated into English and American folk-pop songs with bossa nova and samba beats. Songs were arranged by Eumir Deodata and Don Sebasky and produced by Creed Taylor The album opens with Gayle Caldwell's "Stay." It's got a slow bossa beat and a flute. Giberto has a calming voice and it's very easy listening. "Misty Roses" has a more pronounced bossa beat. A lovely song with the piano. "Beach Samba" continues the bossa nova/samba beat. Multiple horns and a flute. Giberto scat singing mostly. Giberto brings her six-year old in for a duet in "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice." A harmonica is leading the way. For some reason, this sounded like a mix between the Monkees and the Carpenters. This a smooth, relaxing album. Giberto has a calming effect. The music combines a variety of styles: bossa nova, samba, jazz, pop, baroque, marching band and easy listening. It you blasted this album on your stereo, it might have the opposite effect of turning off your neighbors; they may actually like you.

Same feelings towards this as Tito Puente's 'Dance Mania' basically. Very nice with different type of music, and Bossa nova definitely works well in some contexts! But at the same time, I don't know the genre to know whether this is revolutionary or not. But I liked it, refreshing indeed. Was half expecting 'The Girl From Ipanema' to be on the album though, but apparently not.
I thought this was pretty good. She's got an excellent voice. It's certainly a product of the times when it was made.
I like the bossanova sound -- it's great background music. And I've heard some Astrud Gilberto before. That said, after a couple listens, I didn't get hooked by any particular songs.
Breezy bossa nova that gets hijacked every 4th or 5th song by a marching band, carnival or a duet with a 6-year-old and causes it to flirt with 2 star territory.
I like The Astrud Gilberto album released a year prior to this one, as well as the big hits most folks know done in collaboration with Joao Gilberto) - but this had some real clankers (Parade, You Didn't Have to be so Nice.)
This was okay. Didn’t have the same grooves as some of the other Brazilian albums. This is the person who was on girl from ipanema? This album definitely doesn’t have the same punch and vocal strength I’d have expected.
Nice but unnecessary. The “military march” song seemed very out of place.
Short and sweet! I liked the Brazilian album we heard last week better but had no real problem with this. I did find the song listing different types of parades to be a bit corny.
The sound of a fembot sipping a cocktail from a coconut next to the pool just before Austin Powers swings round the corner.
I like Astrud Gilberto's voice when matched with bossa and samba, but too much of this album is influenced by USA music trends of the time and the parade song is just terrible.
I didn’t get it on first listen, but it clicked on the second. This is lovely romantic, sweet music. Listens: 2 Fave Track: It’s A Lovely Day Today Rating: 3
This was a pleasant surprise. A quick breath of fresh air that was over just as it began. Glad it was on here!
Not bad at all, I feel like we've seen the Gilberto name pop up all over this list, but different people. This one's a woman named Assturd, oops I mean Astrud. It's a very specific vibe, a very situational album in that sense as it nails the mood its shooting for. There are some really cool tracks on here, even though as a whole it blended together more than I wished it would. Really really loved "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice," a duet between Astrud and her son I believe. Enjoyable album. Favorite tracks: You Didn't Have to Be So Nice, Misty Roses, Canoeiro. Album art: Just a portrait shot of Astrud, lightly obscured by grass in front of the lens. Not a bad shot, but not a very interesting cover. 3/5
This will be interesting. Only 28 minutes? Same lovely vibratoless voice. Songs are a bit thin. However foolish heart and the one with her daughter were very good. Three stars for 28 minutes
Good vibes, fun to listen to for a change of pace.
Nice 60s era samba with some corny tunes
Yeah, thanks Astrud, now I want a pina colada and it's 10am. An absolutely beautiful voice, so clear and sultry. She did the most famous Girl From Ipanema apparently, and you can tell that she must have been one of the standout vocalists of the era. It's a touch dull, if we're looking at it through cynical 2024 eyes, but regardless, a very nice gentle start to the day. Now, where's that pina?
Twee!! Afternoon at the beach vibes.
This was a fun album. I liked the song she did with her child. For a few moments, I was thinking that it was Bebel Gilberto, who I also like. When I looked it up, I found out that she is not Bebel’s mom (she and Joao broke up and Bebel is his kid with somebody else) and that it is her six year old son on the song.
Really? Astrud's fine — even better than that — she has an unmistakable sweet voice and delivery. But a second album of hers here? What more was there to offer? Not her fault, this was pleasant, but is a pretentious addition to this experiment, IMO.
Pleasant enough. that song with the kid, though.
Totally mellow vibe - this is one you put on in the background when you're cooking dinner or having a dinner party or something. Didn't love it, didn't hate it but very pleasant despite a couple of weird songs. Would totally be worth buying if you found it for a few bucks used.
RIP Astrud Bosso Nova, Samba.... Standout: Beach Samba Iconic sound. A Nice album. 3.5
Beach Samba I used to like those Nouvelle Vague albums of samba/bossa nova covers from about 15-20 years ago, but I don’t know a great deal about the main people other than names like Astrud Gilberto and Sergio Mended. I also know I much prefer the bossa nova end of the Latin American jazz spectrum than the salsa end This is quite jazz flute, but not necessarily in a bad way. It’s enjoyable but very lightweight - it’s been a nice listen this morning while making breakfast. It’s very pleasant and floats along very nicely, but never quite leaves much of an imprint or memory. Misty Roses and My Foolish Heart are both very nice. Wasn’t a fan of the circus one I much prefer it to the other jazzy albums we’ve listened to, and really glad to have given it a go. I might not think to put it on, but if came across it somewhere I would definitely give it another listen, and I would also think about delving a bit deeper into this type of music A nice enjoyable non threatening solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Solid bossa nova
Slower but I like the bossa nova
Samba isn't something I listen to all that often, so this album was a nice change of pace. A very mellow jazz vibe. I could see myself listening to this again.
It was pleasant is about all I’ve got to offer, though a couple of the songs (Parade and You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice) made me wince a bit. I do like the whole 60s samba/bossa nova vibe but I wouldn’t peg this as a classic.
3.4
Didn’t really hit for me but it was produced very well (2.5/5)
Very pleasant
Good vibes...not the best but a worthwhile listen. 3/5
Favorite Tracks: Stay Misty Roses My Foolish Heart
This is...for lack of a better term, "a vibe". I really love Astrud's vocals, and the orchestral notes in the back really transport me to another place and time, but if I haven't had caffeine I'm dozing off.
Breezy Bossa Nova that makes even the most mundane task feel like lounging on a Brazilian terrace with a cocktail in hand. The instrumentation is consistently sublime, featuring fluttering flutes and smooth, buttery percussion that create a relaxing, cinematic atmosphere perfect for a lazy summer afternoon. While the album is remarkably short and sweet, its quirks only add to its nostalgic charm.
I like this more than the other bossa nova stuff I've heard here. Her vocals are definitely the part that sets it apart for me. They're so laid back but pretty. Instrumentally it still doesn't blow me away, but the increased focus on vocals makes that less of an issue for me.
Nothing quite as iconic or catchy as “The Girl from Ipanema” here, but still pleasant overall. Welcome summer vibes in the winter.
Meh.
Well that was pleasant.
Relaxing, mellow, chill vibes for my work day. Might have been a 4 if you take out Parade (A Banda). Kinda ruins the flow each time it came on.
My god, the lyrics. Terrible. Not sure what I mean? Listen to Parade. How many different parades can you list? I know that Gilberto isn't responsible for the lyrics, just singing them, but they are so juvenile. And this isn't a kids' album. She has a nice voice, but I would say it sounds like most of the other samba singers from that era. The music was light and fun, but still sophisticated in all the different instruments being arranged. Maybe it would've been better if all the songs were in Portuguese so I wouldn't know what she was saying. A perfectly acceptable 3, and for those who don't get stuck on the lyrics like me, maybe a 4.
- they had me for a second before they lost me at how much i hated the song “parade” - i hate kids. “you didn’t have to be so nice“ made me mad - lmao i’m sorry - i actually really like bossa nova so the rest was good
Nice and jazzy bossa album! The A side is full of surprises, however it starts to slow down by the B side. But overall, the album has very creative surprises in it!
A dozen or so songs like "Noa Bate O Corocao" would have got high marks from me. But English language versions of American pop songs is doesn't do it for me. There must be earlier LPS of Giberto doing samba classics but those are hard to find I guess.
Decent. Sounds like something that would play (has played?) during a montage in an Austin Powers movie.
Immersive at times but the changes in tone took me out of my reverie. I still think I would listen to it again.
Quite nice.
Inoffensive but nice listen, wouldn’t go out of my way to listen more but also wouldnt complain if it’s on
Chill.
Short and sweet.
3,5
Relaxing and smooth
Best paired with a tiki drink and a summer ocean breeze. Five stars as background music. Three stars when it's front-and-center.
Pretty good vibes, tip the one with a kid. 3/5
Fine for what it is
Interesting album. Definitely captures and sound and feeling. In a smoky club in Rio during the 60s watching Astrud sing on stage.
Top trake - Misty roses, I think of you i You didnt have to be so nice
Definitely a good example of Bossa Nova, and Brazilian jazz. Her singing voice is very good. It would be good background music at a dinner party. The song "I had the craziest dream" sounded very similar to the Wii menu music. I'm sure that took inspiration from it. The song "Parade" was strange, she just kept listing off holidays and saying parade. One song had a child singing, which was also odd. Overall not a bad album, but nothing I'd consider groundbreaking
The title mostly sums this up. A nice, chilled, sunny samba album with relaxed, breathy vocals. Very pleasant listening on a bright Sunday morning. The only detracting feature is that 'Parade' and 'You Didn't Have To Be So Nice' are quite idiosyncratic and don't really fit in with the rest of the album. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Stay Date listened: 08/10/23
This sounds exactly like the interior of an Anthropologie.
Pleasant enough This website says samba is one of my least favourite genres. I disagree. I don’t like how most samba albums I’ve heard are by someone named Gilberto tho Or is samba somehow genetic September 30, 2023
Thousand times better than django django or that boring guy Jack White. However, it may be the case that this music has been so overplayed and insulted and destroyed by its imitators that it somehow it feels lessened.
Classic because it's Astrud, but it's Astrud. 3.0
I mean, it's Astrud Gilberto. But I am really unsure if this is the best representation of her here. No Agua De Beber, no Meditacion, no pretty much anything I think of when I think of her stuff. It's nice, of course, was never going to less than a pleasant listen. On Spotify it has the 2nd half of a different album with Walter Wanderley Trio for some reason. Which does contain Tristeza and Call Me. But I stuck her debut on afterwards instead, which reinforced my gut feeling that it should be in the book instead. Far superior.
This was mostly good, but not great. A couple low points marred the album IMO; the marching bands of Parade and the kid's singing in You Didn't Have To Be So Nice. Also, I think some of these lose some of their charm when sung in English.
I feel like this would have been way more exciting live. As a record it was kind of cold and sterile.
A fun morning listen
This is quite an extraordinary record. If you could image WHAT the 1960s sounds like this is a really big hint. Astrud sounds amazing on thus and mixing English with her native Portuguese was something rarely seen in a record like this at this time.
A somewhat cloying little confection of an album. Lovely vocals, languid arrangements, a very specific vibe that is very much of its time. I kind of lost the will to live a little by track 11, but the last song ("Nao Bate O Coracao") was really excellent. Fave Songs: Nao Bate O Coracao, Bossa Na Praia (Beach Samba), The Face I Love, Misty Roses, Canoeiro, Stay
Chillest start to a Monday ever.
As easy on the ears as can be, nice to hear a samba cover of one of my favourite Lovin' Spoonful songs, got to say the original was better. There were real shades of Burt Bacharach at his most saccharine on this album.
Ehh! Does she actually perform with a full marching band?!
Decent music, but more suitable for an elevator ride or pause menu than a dedicated listen.
Her vocals remind me of the singer from stereolab. This album is what stereolab would sound like if it ventured into bossa nova music. I have no idea who this artist is or what kind of music she makes. Nice to go into an album with no preconceptions. 'Misty roses' is really soothing. Favourite track so far. A side is a mixed bag of nice songs, one boring track (parade) and a few forgettable ones. Overall seems like a nice listening experience.
Chill vibes
This was very interesting, not my absolute cup of tea but it’ll do! Pleasant and quirky.
3-4
I love feeling like I'm sitting by the beach without actually sitting by the beach!
Distinctively recognizable vocals from The Girl From Ipanema singer. Airy and smooth, but not much more to it. Kind of like going to a pub and getting a Coors Light when what you really wanted was a Guiness.
Not the best samba album I've heard, but it was enjoyable enough
I thought it would be right up my alley but it was a bit disappointing tbh
beautiful voice, gets 3/5 cause lacks abit of variety in style (and girl from Ipanema is not on this one).
Sweet

Samba is samba and it's fine but not a go to genre, so hitting this after the Getz/Gilberto album felt like a retread
Very chill. Love the samba music. Great for background music. I probably would not seek this out to listen again but would not turn it off if it was on. 3.5 stars.
Decent for a change but would never go back to it.
Loved the music. And she has a lovely voice. However, there was no life or energy in her singing. Perhaps because English is not her first language and she's not super comfortable letting go. It just sounded like the energy of a teenager at a school concert.
Not particularly memorable but happy, relaxing, vibes to have on in the background
upbeat, sounds a little like the wii shop music, an enjoyable listen
It's a lovely voice, but the arrangements are about 50:50. Some are gorgeous, the opener, and the beautiful duet You Didn't Have to be So Nice, others just pass by. Still good though.
Pleasure to listen to. Cool and breezy. Makes me feel like it’s the 60s. I just had 3 gibsons and a wedge salad and am ready to take my Seconal before bed.
Meh.
Sounds like a film score from the 60/70s, short enough that it was only starting to get irritating. Has that overly sanitised sound that makes it a bit creepy (particularly the singing child), the sort of thing that would be played on a radio that turns itself on in a horror film. Bit pointless but nice enough for a bit of variety I suppose.
I'm just not sure why it's on the list. It's not her most notable, it's not the stand-out of samba or jazz. Why?
Hard to rate. The music isn't bad and can be downright relaxing at times, but its hardly memorable. Ms. Gilberto woman is a fine singer but at the same time I find her to be very generic sounding, like I've heard a dozen or more women that sing just like that in my lifetime. It's really not a bad album, but Incantation praise it too much either. Giving it a 3 because a 2 would just be unfair.
When it started, I thought, “I’m not going to like this….” Turned out pretty good…. Standout: You Didn’t Have to Be So Nice 3/5
Interesting to listen to some Bossanova on this list. It was fun.
Fun listen but its a one and done for me.
I'd agree this belongs on the list, it just is a little too easy and subtle for my tastes.
When she passes I go ahhhh
Mignon. Voix parfois un peu juste mais touchante. Dépaysant et bien fait
- On second listen, pretty cool i like it - a lot of forgettable tracks though - i think i like bossa nova 6/10
Nice for background music, but I have to admit that I got bored pretty quickly here, even on a closer listen. Arrangements are top-notch, of course, courtesy of Eumir Deodato (known for many sixties staple recordings in that overall genre, and also for his later collabs or (re)mixes with Roberta Flack, Björk, Christohe and others)... But the songs, well, they... they just happen. I probably don't have the best ear for samba, to be honest. But given that Astrud's vocal performance sounds quite average to me, this certainly didn't help me warm up to those tunes anyway. Just so you know, I have absolutely nothing with singers with limited skills or range--some of my favorite singers of all time *do* have very limited skills sometimes. But in that case, the music itself needs to be a little more consistent and moving than what I hear on this record. Given the sheer amount of *important* records released in 1967 (and also in the four or five years after), I think *Beach Samba* risks eclipsing some far more important releases down the line. And that's a risk I'm not willing to take for my own list. So that's a no-go for me, even though this album could indeed be the perfect soundtrack for that imaginary video game depicted in that 3/5 assessment currently displayed in the second slot of the reviews gallery. I think I could play that video game about restaurants and food, actually. It sounds like a very relaxing one, ha ha. By the way, that reviewer wrote only fourteen reviews in 2021 and then gave up. That's a shame, this person seemed quite funny... Actually, I wonder how many other ones gave up. And, also, how many are still *currently* writing reviews, still keeping up the pace... Has anyone ever managed to review *all* the 1001 albums? Has someone ever finished this thing? Hope the answers will come soon. In the meantime... Number of albums left to review: 680 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 157 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 74 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 90 (including this one)
This album made me feel so damn peppy as I ran my little errands! Highlights: Misty Roses Beach Samba Whatinthefuckisthis honorable mention: You Didn't Have To Be So Nice
At the start I didn't enjoy it very much, but as the album progressed it started getting better and better and really grew on me. Very beautiful vocals.
Probably pairs nicely with a tropical drink.
Puzzling choice for that book. I love bossa-nova and I like Astrud, but this album choice is strange. Her first album is way better than this one. This one feels uninspired. The arrangements are sometimes too prominent which doesn't compliment the tunes well. Sometimes the songs are just pure cheesiness. I don't get it. 5,5/10
Quite light and swingy and sexy-ish in a formalist, absurdist '60s way. More ambient than substantive on its own terms. But the bigger the arrangement and orchestration, the less the impact. "Parade" is just silly and there's too much schmaltz generally. "My Foolish Heart" is good – but there are many, many more compelling versions. This era seemed to think well – almost aim for – the novelty hit, which roughly half of this record sounds like.
Its smooth and easy, nothing offensive to the ear here. But its also completely unremarkable. This could be the music you hear in a supermarket or shopping mall. I dont hate it, but its very weird that it would be included on a list of must-hear albums. 3/5
Christmas music for sure
Rustig. The girl from ipanama en de vrouw van Joao Gilberto
Cool vibe to this album. I felt like I was sitting on the beach with $1 million more in my bank account than I actually have. When I want to pretend like I don't have any cares, this is a great one to come back to. Aside from that, I'm not often in a mood where this is what I want to listen to. Very good songs, except for the parade one that interrupts the flow (really, what's up with that one?), just not my favorite kind of music. Definitely belongs on the 1001 list.
Better than expected. The title speaks for itself; the album is a very relaxed affair that makes for some nice background listening, even though this is not my usual genre. 3/5
As Samba goes, I'm betting you don't get much better than this. It's not my genre, but this was a pleasant listen.
Hey you want to rob a casino in the 60s? Have I got a soundtrack for you! Weirdly, this is just a pleasant listen. Put it on, zone out, drink your coffee in that hipster cafe, work on your screenplay... But I would have a hard time sitting and attending this as a show, concert, etc. But definitely pleasant sounding. Although I prefer Petula Clark's Call Me.
Apple Music clocked this simply as samba, but it’s actually bossa nova, which I like far less. Not bad overall but most of the songs sounded too similar to each other. The song with (what I assume was) her son was cute.
Pleasant.
She has a great voice but this wasn't the strongest choice of songs for her. I'm surprised this album made it onto this list, to be honest.
Very cool performer here. So emblematic of the time.
Stick this record on, close your eyes and I guarantee you'll see yourself on a Parisienne street, sitting outside a cafe in the sunshine watching the world go by in the 1960s.
Not really my kind of music but a perfectly fine, mellow and chill little album. Favourite tracks: You Didn't Have To Be So Nice, Nao Bate, O Coracao
Decent
A lot of this sounds like elevator music to me but I’m having fun with it, and her voice is so nice. “You Didn’t Have to Be So Nice” was cute. I think the short duration really helps here. I Actually liked this, fits a certain vibe. Wouldn’t mind listening to it again.
There's sand in my feet! It's actually pretty neat. I'm going to convince myself that the Parade song was used in Animal House.
Not bad but nothing I went crazy about
Nice album of mostly jazz standards with a samba take. Good listen
I consider myself a samba fan but somehow it appears here as my least favorite genre. I think the samba selection on this list (at least so far) is very gringo-filtered, oh well
Music to die in a heatwave to
A pleasant enough listen, beautiful vocals and fun upbeat samba/bossa nova backdrop
A whole vibe, "beach samba" is the perfect description.
Beach Samba
Nice sweet sound. Slightly jazzy at times but overall very much of the 60s.
I mean, I love it, but some of the structure and lyrics can be a bit repetitive at times. The sound is wonderful though, and Astrid Gilbero’s voice is absolutely perfect for the genre. A little disappointed with how short the run time is, but towards the end the album does start to run a bit dry. Theirs better Samba/ Bossa Nova albums out there- for sure
I feel I didn't get the full experience, as I wasn't in a business hotel lobby while I listened. It's very hard to feel strongly about this in any way. It's a 2 but with an extra point for only being 27min long. 3/5.
One really great (sweet) song and that is \"You Didn't Have to Be So Nice\". The rest of the album is great but so dated. I did enjoy listening to it though. 3/5
Åter igen svängigt! älskar bossa nova ändå
Not really my thing or maybe wasn't in the mood but no way can I say this isn't good
My dad would often play Astrud Gilberto albums when I was young and thus very nostalgic. Though this album is just ok, I have heard much better from her. I'd give it a 2 star rating but it's the only solo album of hers on the list hence the 3.
Almost giving sex and the city theme song with "Stay", why is "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" cute?? The words are a little creepy but the overall tune of the song is nice. Definitely giving beach, enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Average. Liked the instrumentals but wasn't a fan of the vocals.
For Gilberto's Brazilian roots this album sounds surprisingly French, with light and airy guitar/other instrumentals floating along in time to her powerful but not overpowering vocals. Some tracks do fall flat (any song that includes a child sing-along is an instant no from me), but most of this brief LP delights.
It's okay. Maybe a little flat for my tastes. Every song sounds like it should be played over the last scene of a film featuring humanity's extinction, flipping from shot to shot of deserted shopping malls and parking lots and such.
Easy to listen to. Nothing to write home about.
This is pleasant, but it's like...movie soundtrack music. Still, I enjoyed it, even if it's pretty unmemorable.
It had some entertaining parts, and was not actively unpleasant to listen to. But also did not grab my attention - very easy to tune out while working, so I think I missed the majority of the album. 2.5/5.
You Didn't Have To Be So Nice".
Not much to say about this. It's an outdated album from a genre that no longer exists. It doesn't sound bad, and you'll find stuff to like, but you will, perhaps unfortunately, see this as a curio. That said, I was utterly won over by You Didn't Have to Be So Nice, a sweet, sincere little duet between Astrud and her six-year-old son. I've played it to the mothers of young children in my intimate circle, and they agree it's lovely. Actually, that's the issue. That's the song that has real heart to it. The rest feels like generic album fodder, pleasant but forgettable. That may be unfair reasoning, but three stars seems exactly fair.
Relaxing and great background music
Very pleasant.
proper 70s big band samba, prefer a little more lime in my condensed milk though!
Not the most entertaining world music album, but I have a lot of respect for it. Wish there was less English. Somehow it just kills the escape.
English/Portuguese mix with Bossa Nova and Swing influences. Interesting combo but nothing more
Hard not to like this kind of music with its winsome singing and big band professional accompaniment. But nothing on this really stood out that much either, other than the slightly bizarre duet with a child (?) singer towards the end.
I hadn’t listen to samba in years, so this was an interesting change of pace. It wasn’t bad and I appreciate the quality I’d the vocals. It’s just not my typical music choice.
I was digging it the first few songs, but then it started to get old and some of the vocals were annoying to me as it went on, unfortunately. It's nice though, but didn't need half of it in the album.
Nice listen, would happily listen again or put it on for a BBQ, but didn’t save any.
Sweet and romantic.
Pleasant! 6/10
short, pleasant, but unremarkable
Some good songs, but the tone felt off at times. Worked for some songs but got repetitive and monotonish listening through the whole album.
I was expecting to love this but found it too mawkish to completely enjoy. Astrud Gilbert has an amazing voice and there are some really nice bossa nova and pop tunes on here. However, there are some tracks that are just plain cheesy or simply never rise above background music in a budget cocktail bar. Go listen Getz/Giberto in preference to this
Not my jam
Such a soothing voice! Alas, this album doesn't reach half the heights I'm sort of expecting from Gilberto after listening to Girl from Ipanema so many times...
I like her voice, and I like it better when she sings in Portuguese. The overall sound is kind of boring, but also relaxing. Good background music.
Enjoyable, though some of the instrumentation is a bit cutesy and most songs end before they really start developing. Economical, though, and atmospheric.
Ok. Immken background music
I like the general vibe of this, but I didn't walk away humming anything, ya know?
Smoooooth. I can hang with this in the background, no probs. And I love the name Astrud.
Cool vibes. Give me a drink and a dash of sunshine, would make for a decent evening.
It’s pleasant enough and has some interesting chord changes, but it’s fairly bland. It’s almost as if this is an over westernized and sanitized Samba. The backing band sometimes sounds like it’s straight out of the 50s which is jarring considering what what going on musically in 1967. I’m a fan of Astrud Gilberto but this is just not produced the way it should have been. The jazz flute is great though.
I liked it more than I thought I would. Summery vibes all around
This was ok. Some songs were good, others were not. Overall, it was average.
Quite liked it
Raw Samba of the 60s was great. Just like all things great and trend worthy, when they go pop its an indication that the trend has jumped the shark. This is a decent poppy-samba album, but 60s pop like this isn't my cup of tea. Gilberto's earlier Samba is much more worthy of inclusion on the list.
Favs: Dia das roses (I Think Of You), Beach Samba Mehs: You Didn't Have to Be So Nice This was an interesting one. I didn't necessarily love all the selections or their set up, but I *love* her voice. And I don't think I'd ever heard any of this, except Beach Samba.
Very chill and relaxing album. A few dud tracks, but overall I enjoyed it.
Well, that was fun wasn't it. Super chill voice, nice laid back vibes.
Not bad. Enjoyed most of it, nice samba vibes though don't know if I'd come back to it
J’aime bien. 3.5
3/5
Music from a coastal driving montage in an Audrey Hepburn film, or from the make-up section of House of Fraser. Catchy and summery
Kinda nice, but I just don't think Bossa Nova is for me.
Groovy. Gorgeous voice & fun samba.
Cute and sweet. The Portuguese lyrics work for me more than the English as they seem to match the music better. Cool to hear so many hip hop samples from this.
Very relaxing, perfect background music.
Call me from Austin powers soundtrack
Pleasant vocals, jazzy, very chill, favorites are Oba, Oba and Canoeiro. Nice album for relaxing (on the beach). Perhaps not the most memorable
An ok Bossa nova album

Very summery music. I really enjoy the vocals and the bossa nova vibe. It's easy listening in the best way.
Pretty good, fun vibes. It did get samey so I didn't listen to the whole album.
I enjoyed it, but I get that most people didn't. Bossa nova isn't everyone's cup of tea, and whilst it was pleasant to listen to its nothing special.
Nice, makes you feel like you're on the beach on a nice summers day ordering cocktails with your pest pals, looking out for groups of people it would be fun to meet and hang out with. That said, I don't think I'd go out of my way to listen to this again, unless e.g. I'm actually on the beach.
I actually vibed with this one quite a bit. I liked the mood it created
false
Sounds interesting
Is okay, nice and light samba feel, just not what I would typically choose to listen to.
A bossa nova classic. Excellent.
That's some relaxing stuff right there. I'm more familiar with her husband but have always enjoyed samba.
Pretty good! Not many comments for this one
definite 60s vibes
Nice, no desire to relisten 3.4
Good uptempo album with a great voice.
Und dann dieses "Didn't Have To Be So Nice", süß - aber worum geht's da?
It’s just mediocre imo.
It is what it says it is. Samba!
I now know what Bossa Nova is. It's fun, vaguely exotic lounge music. Pleasant. Music for swingers and shag carpet enthusiasts.
Nice voice. 6/10
Not bad
Calm and jazzy bossa nova, but nothing really stands out. Singing doesn't quite sound natural and comfortable.
Pretty chill 60s South American artist.
Very relaxing
It was alright, interesting in places but wouldn't seek it out again
sounds like you'd expect
not crappy.
There's been a weird influx of latinx music in the past week after not getting any previous to that. Overall it was pretty cool, though I really hated the parade song (perhaps because I don't really enjoy actual parades either). Some of the other songs were a bit cloying as well. This works really good as a kids album, but I don't think that's how it was intended. It's fine, but I don't ever see myself coming back to it 3/5
soothing but not super interesting. nice relaxing listen
5.5-6/10
Perfectly pleasant. Interesting to me that it was also a 1967 Verve release.
Nice
Astrud Gilberto today. Wife: "who" Me "You know, 'Girl From Ipanema'. Bah, be dah." Wife: oh yeah. Me, it's the title track next, most popular track on the album, 'beach samba' but I don't know it. Beach samba, starts. 'Bah, be de dah, be dah, be dah.' Mostly harmless, but I could've died happy without it.
The parade song felt like some sick joke
eh
I do not want to 'make sex with music'. At least not *this* music. It's awful. So overly saccharine I need to go to the dentist and get checked for cavities after one play through. The best two tracks on the album have no lyrics at all, just "doo bee bop doo ba da ba da". The worst track is a list of parades. This is the music you play for a toddler. If you wanted to highlight bossa nova, this is not the way.
After the first few tracks, I thought this was gonna be a nice breezy Bossa Nova album. But then it got kinda weird. And not good weird. Questionable decisions weird. Parade is the first kinda WTF moment that derails the album. And just when you think it might get back on track, some stupid kid starts singing. 2.5 stars.
album #82 it's inoffensive! but bossa nova is simply not often my thing. ꩜ album rating: ★★☆☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,007 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 38 ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 16 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 66
too old
Not my bag, nice bit of whimsy in there though.
How a Stepford wife would party. Creepy
Very chill but a bit dull
Haven't I already had this album like five times already? I like Astrud Gilberto's voice now and then, but all these albums with her end up sounding entirely the same, and I don't like her voice *that* much.
This is some Nico, singing off key shit.
I thought I would like this more. Fun name! Boring album. Top track: "Beach Samba"
BORRRRRRINNGGGGGG still would.
Launched as the voice on The Girl From Ipanema this album is mainly her voice put to pop recordings with a very 60's set of arrangement making it pretty average with a couple of bad choices (Parade and You Didn't Have To Be So Nice). She has a much nicer bossanova vocal than presented here.
1,8/5
Nothing special?
Although I am a fan of world music, this type is just too middle of the road for me. Too sweet.
Booooo - urns 2/5
Should have been better
Yeah okay. It was nice and everything but bossa nova just doesn't do it for me, turns out. Unless "it" is "makes me really want to rewatch Mad Men".
I bet Wes Anderson loves this shit It’s fine. She’s got a nice voice and some of the songs have cool arrangements, but Parade was weird and the song with the kid was annoying. I don’t have much more to say about this.
I wish I would have been in a better mode to enjoy this.
Did not like. Quintessential 60s bossa nova. Incredibly boring, exactly what you think it sounds like. LOWLIGHTS: Parada and Oba Oba.
Ok. Kinda sounded like Christmas music, without the Christmas theme.
I’m not sure what to make of it… perhaps a paper boat.
This was ok. Easy listening that was a bit weird.
Probably a great one to have wafting over a swimming pool on a hot day.. nice enough but not that interesting to me
Woof. This is dated 1967 but I would have believed 1947. The vocals are pretty good, but otherwise this did not age well. This was a long 27 minutes. 1.8
I mean, it's fine. It's lounge music, she certainly has a good voice. 0.1% of the music you MUST hear before you die? I don't think so.
Inoffensive nice music.
Nice, but ventures too much into novelty to be anything essential 2.5*
really baffling inclusion in this list that seemingly robert dimery is only aware of the gilberto family and thinks that encompasses the entire musical history of brazil. this is incredibly forgettable. normally i try to avoid looking at ana's reviews before i write mine but she took the words out of my mouth because this just feels like background music. her voice is lovely and tracks like "misty roses" work well, but most of this feels derivative or are wildly subpar. "parade" is atrocious. i don't understand what's going with this album. this is an album that doesn't even hit 28 minutes and i have honestly forgotten all of it already. how is that even possible!?
This is too sappy even for me- the sappiest sap that ever sapped. Nice and short though. Too much ba-da-ba-da-ba-da-ba.
4/10
The Girl From Ipanema isn't even on this? Why do I have to listen to it then?
Calling this elevator music feels dismissive and harsh, even though I wasn't a fan of this. This is inoffensive bossa nova music that I couldn't imagine anyone hating too passionately. The two tracks that stuck out to me are 'Parade (A Banda)' and 'You Didn't Have To Be So Nice'. I don't mean that they stick out as a compliment. The first track I mentioned is an uncharacteristically busy song with childish lyrics which has Gilberto naming different times of parades. The latter track is Gilberto doing a duet with a literal child. It is just a bit weird. The arrangement of strings and flutes on this record are pleasant and Gilberto has a cute voice, but this doesn't do all that much for me.
Elevater music, not my type of sound. The album cover looks photoshopped - even for this day and age.
not my style, but a vibe
I like bossa nova, wanted to like this. I mean she’s the girl from…. It’s on verve, the 60s cheese cover… But she is such a limited voice that it’s a hard listen, a really hard listen. Didn’t even help being on holiday in the Med. It’s not a good record. 2 star
langweilig
Light and breezy. Fine and non-offensive. I am not sure when I would listen to it again. Maybe if I am on a beach and just needing some background music. I want to write a longer review but a lot of what is here depends on the setting. If I am pretending it is the 1960's and/or just hanging out in the 1960's through use of a time machine, I really think I would enjoy this enough to give it a "5."
While pleasant at times, I don’t think I love parades as much as she does
Ett enstaka spår går an.
Pleasant enough, but not particularly memorable.
Fun Bossa Nova album, not a lot stands out but this style has its place
I've seen samba referenced a few times recently so I'm glad I'm listening to a classic. It's, you know, fine? Not what I'd want to listen to but very interesting as a historical document. I guess. "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" was a jump scare with a kid singing! (the real joy was Apple Music's samba/bossa nova/jazz mix it played afterward!)
Ok but no song that caught my ear.
Imitating an ambulance siren into parade marching music is a crazy transition. But to be fair that siren imitation is probably her strongest vocal performance on the album. Yep, she is unironically being singmogged by a child.
Is this what 1960s businessmen listened to while they were cheating on their wives
not the strongest Gilberto album - def seem to prefer Joao.
Oof. Was excited for this one, but it really fell short. The duet with the 7 year old also took off a full star. Not my thing.
De loin pas son meilleur album 2/5
chill vibes, not bad, some terrible songs tho
I echo with many others perform may have already said: Ms. Gilberto's voice is beautiful and while the soft rock and samba vibe of this album is kind of chill, the parade, music, and the weird kid song definitely kick it down a notch. There's nothing on this album that makes me want to save it or return to it or play it again so...
Jazzy, Rumba, Samba, Bossa Nova. Felt like I was watching a beach or car driving along the coast scene in a James Bond or Matt Helm movie in the late 60’s early 70’s. 2.3
I don't know much about Samba or Bosa Nova genre in general and this was may or may not be typical of the style - hopefully it's not because I didn't think much of the album.
Despite being a jazz lover, I could never get into Bossa Nova. There was some kind of discrete Samba and Bossa Nova fad in the late 90s / early 00s around me, all my friends suddenly started playing this kind of sound. I tried to understand the appeal, but I never could. In the end it's probably just not my kind of music. It's too restrained, too inoffensive, and my brain doesn't seem to be able to process it as anything more than "easy-listening background music" when I'm in a good mood, or "boring elevator music" when I'm not. I listened to this record with an open mind, but it didn't really change my view of the genre. It's musically solid, the jazzy arrangements are smooth (especially in the first three tracks), the voice is pleasant. But at no point was I surprised or moved, it was exactly what I always expect from a samba album - sweet and relaxing, but ultimately boring and a bit shallow. I don't hate it, it just doesn't speak to me at all. 4/10
From The Face of Love onward, things drift away from that jazzy bossa vibe and it just works a lot less. Maybe I’m too used to hearing her voice in that setting, or maybe it simply doesn’t sound as good. Parade and I Had the Craziest Dream pretty much seal it for me: Astrud really isn’t that impressive as a singer. It even sounds slightly off at times, and she probably should have stayed in that soft, nostalgic bossa lane. Even the instrumentation starts to bother me. I wanted to like this, but it kind of chips away at the myth for me.
