Reviews (page 10 of 13)

Set a lovely atmosphere, I like it as background music

a little bit monotone, good background music though

Beautiful voice - but not in my mind anymore

HL: "Don't Know Why", title track, "I've Got To See You Again", "Shoot the Moon" Nice, cosy album. Can see its broad appeal, with the jazz & folk influences mixed in small doses so it doesn't swing too far in either direction. No one song captivated me (like Jones's song "Sunrise"), but there are no bad songs either. 3.5 July 10, 2023 (note to self, last review was a typo & was heard on July 9)

Some nice folky jazzy soulful pop. It's pleasant for sure, and Norah Jones has a wonderful singing voice. I'm sure this deserves to be here, but I wasn't that into it. Wasn't really in the mood for something so calm and mellow and so I just kind of ended up being a bit bored. Maybe I'll come back for this when I feel more in the mood for it, probably a rainy Winter's day or something. Favourite: I've Got To See You Again

Took me back to a place I’m not sure I wanted to go but hey. It was better than I remembered it but I think the time for airy, summer-vibes, dream-like positive lyrics has passed. For now. See also Jack Johnson.

Heard before Saved 6/14 Top track: Feelin' the Same Way

Sounds like an album you'd slow dance with your lover in an empty ball room with a single spotlight on.

I remember listening to this album for the first time a few years back and thinking, wow...this is incredibly underwhelming. Nothing about it is necessarily bad, just very...meh?

Nice easy listening lounge jazz album. Not something I’d listen to primarily but a nice listen overall.

I've listened to this album twice by now, but I still have trouble rating it. I've seen it been described as "Starbucks music" and I kinda agree. It's inoffensive, running in the background, but I can't differentiate between the songs. Might still rate it a 3 though.

Kinda one note, but I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. 3/5

Maybe...

Je me suis endormi dans le train

Very smooth folky jazz. Very well done. A little too smooth for me, but I can understand why people like it. Favorite song: cold cold heart

Solid album, albeit a bit overhyped.

Very nice and relatable (lol)

Tranquilo. Agradable.

2.7 fine some good songs but fine

It has it's good pieces like "I've got to see you again" but there is not much going on. I can see it as good background music for good restaurant.

Good company while trading my books

Vaatii oikean tunnelman toimiakseen.

Gorgeous singing, lovely piano playing. Really relaxing and slow tempo. Was everywhere for a year or two when it came out. Sadly also very boring! But it is well crafted sweet Nashville jazz.

Alright, fine. I was avoiding this album for a while, but it was actually totally fine. I'd say even enjoyable under the right circumstances. Some of the melodies were really nice and the vocals were consistently pleasant. I might have just unfairly lumped Norah Jones in with Michelle Branch and that ilk. In any case, I at least made it over the Norah Jones Hump. Standouts: Don't Know Why, Cold Cold Heart, Turn Me On, Nightingale

Nice Starbucks music. Favorite song: Don't Know Why

Bubble bath jams.

A bit too soft and slow for me

She has a very special voice. The songs are sometimes a bit bland but the arrangements and production carry it through. But the voice....

my mum used to play this to get me to sleep as a baby. not really my kinda music anymore but she has an amazing voice

Idk all the songs sounded the same

Undoubtedly skilful, but also kind of inoffensive.

Oh wow, I'm in a Starbucks in the early aughts and everyone's thinking about how cool it is to be a little bit sad but only in a way where you want to be sad and it's not like actual depression or the result of some external situation. It's like you're 20 and the director in your head goes "I'm gonna throw the long lens on and get a shot through the window. Look sad. When she walks in, pick your head up but don't shift, give it a beat then force the smallest smile you can. And make sure that scarf isn't blocking your face."

It is good and I know why people like it so much. My gripe is it sounds really similar song to song. 3.5

Norah's voice is absolutely amazing but the songs are very forgettable.

Not my vibe.

Another album that I can say is objectively good that I just don't really need to listen to that often...

I listen to this while walking the dogs in the evening and a nice, but kind of boring

She has a lovely voice, but these songs are really boring.

It’s fine.

This is a nice and pleasant album. It probably serves best as beckground music, but does this well.

3.5 stars a very pleasant album.

Very pleasant

Real mammy vibes on this one. Sounds lovely though. One day I will find the song at the end of the piglet movie dvd.

way better than i thought

3/5 The music was very in tune and played expertly, but country jazz just isn't my thing. Norah has a beautiful voice, but it doesn't make up for the sleepy, slow kinda feel of the album for me. I was happy to hear another woman's voice again. Finally.

Sleepy vibes

Can't go wrong with a bit of blues! Very pleasant album, something I'd put on as background music while having a drink with a friend. But really something I'd listen to normally

Not that impressed, but it wasn’t horrible.

This is so 2002. It's fineee.

Day 12 Don't think I know this lady. I was born in 2002 though so here's hoping. Don't Know Why - 7 - I actually have heard this song before. It's nice. Seven Years - 6 - it was alright. Having a naturally nice voice certainly helps. Cold Cold Heart - 5 Feelin The Same Way - 6 - sounds alright but doesn't feel unique Come Away With Me - 4 - this one crosses too far into the boring category for me to bother with it Shoot The Moon - 7 - this song conveys emotion really well and the instruments play a nice part which is something I couldn't really say for the other songs Turn Me On - 5 - I don't think this song works well as a piano ballad when it's called turn me on. It doesn't sound sexy (which I do think in certain parts of the song she's trying to). It also doesn't help that she compares her dry pussy to the desert waiting for the rain which references a song I like a lot better than this one. Lonestar - 5 - after seeing the name of the title, I looked up Lonestar which was one of my favorite places to eat growing up. Most of them are closed up but apparently it's because some guy ejaculated on a steak? Not too sure about how true that one is. Anyway, mediocre song. I've Got To See You Again - 7 - this one is a nice change of pace. I think the song is good, I just think other people have a better voice for this type of song Painter Song - 6 - this song is good. I'm a bit burnt out from these lovey, longing songs but it's still a good listen. However, I think a cool idea would be to do this song without any of the instruments and maybe in a minor tone to make it a creepy song. One Fight Down - 7 - Yeah idk I don't have any complaints for this song. I think some things could be better but it's a pretty solid song Nigthingale - 4 - Nightingale sounds a whole lot like God. This song doesn't have much going for it besides the guitar part. The Long Day Is Over - 5 - I feel like I'm supposed to be sad but I can't get myself to care enough to feel it. The Nearness Of You - 6 - has a bittersweet tone or like a tone where you just ended something you knew you had to. Overall: it was okay. Similarly to the album before, eh. Although unlike the other album, I actually do think she has a ton of potential, probably just not the songs for me. 74/130 or 57%

This was a jazz album like Black Sabbath was a rock band. The times just didn’t have a definition for what those acts were doing. Norah did what Adele and Amy would do later on. I bought into the seduction; I didn’t realise that 27 million others did as well. That’s the definition of pop music, right?

3.5 Really good music. It was something special when it came out and it still holds up well. 3.5

Wat een heerlijke stem!

Very coffeehouse jazz. Nothing amazing but can't be mad with it. It doesn't really try anything new in the genre and it's just a pleasant listen.

Easy listening

6/10. Could be a low 7. This was quite nice, but nothing from it really stood out to me, just faded into the background.

Norah Jones is one of the best examples of the movement in the early 2000’s towards a jazz flavored soft pop. The music is smooth, has some pretty safe chord changes (though they are satisfying), and has a very pleasant sense of melody. Jones’ voice is the highlight of the record. She is a technically gifted singer and her voice is very warm. Overall a pleasant listen if not a bit bland.

I didn’t listen to the whole thing, but decent chill album

I was looking forward to this as I seemed to recall enjoying Norah's sound back when this came out, but I found it quite bland on this re-listen

Beautiful voice but nothing musically mind blowing

I am surprised to read that this album is one of the best selling albums of all time, but I guess I shouldn't be, as I remember Don't Know Why being played to death. But with reason. It is completely non-offensive. It's silky smooth, easy listening jazz with some country music flare, is perfect to play as loungey background music for restaurants, coffee shops, and pseudo fancy dinner parties.

great voice and pretty remarkable first album.

Don’t Know Why was huge when it came out. I recall hearing the title track back then too. But despite my girlfriend (and later to be wife) owning this, I’ve never heard it all the way through. 5 Grammys for this one…wow. What do I think? It’s good, but I wouldn’t go as far as great. A bit vanilla for me, but yeah…good. Undoubtedly, she has a great voice. The vibe of this album is very chill, calm. Probably should play this more often.

Above average for her chill vibes and good voice.

Meh - it is what it is

Enjoyed this one.

Notes - Jazzy singer songwriter & pianist’s debut album - Released on jazz label blue note - Number 1 on billboard and a bunch of Grammys and awards - Drumming by Brian blade! - Music for a rainy day with a cup of coffee and a blanket - the whole album lives in the same general sound and vibe so the songs get a bit samey Fav - Feeling the same way - love the acoustic guitar playing on this, really good chord choices least fav - nightingale - lyrics were a bit obvious and the music was forgettable 3.5/5

Jones's debut is a tricky one to rate because it does what it sets out to do, and is absolutely worth a listen. However, the folk stylings get mostly dropped, leaving good playing and mediocre sequencing. The album splits the difference between pop and jazz, but to such a polished level that I'd take CRJ's "run" over NJ's "come" or one of many other Blue Note releases with oomph. And the sound isn't with antecedents. Where's Blossom Dearie?

Very good music, I started skeptical but then I was charmed by her style and he soft composition. However, this song is directed to a specific public and I am not a middle aged sad woman reminiscing about life. I really appreciated her music however and I might come back to it when I am older, maybe…

Nice but bland

Norah Jones is good easy listening jazz. I have her confused with Alicia Keys. I don't like Alicia Keys. Anyway, Don't Know Why is super good. Ultimately, the album is just too much easy listening (Every Noise calls it Contemporary Jazz). It's not my thing. I much prefer a more folk sound.

Jävla pang tjeja

slow smooth music to watch alongside operation Shock and Awe.

almost good

pretty good

Good vibes, powerful opening

it's nice and all but also very conventional

Not something I'd listen to often, but decent if I'm in the mood for it. She's got a great voice.

Nothing impressive here, just a nice little jazzy album that I had fun listening to. 3/5

I would never reach for this just because it’s not what I’m looking for in a rock/pop record. But it’s nice music- Jones has a lovely voice, and the best songs feel like standards out of the Real Book. They’re generally a little on the simple side, and the CD overall is slow, sad, quiet, unexcitable, and a little light on instrumental depth and variety. I think that’s intentional- the focus clearly here is on Jones’ voice, which really is good. There’s only so much of that I want in one sitting, and not too many sittings where I want that either, but it’s a nice CD.

It's a very easy listen and she writes some beautiful songs. Is it on my list, probably not

Gave this one a miss

I can respect it, but I don't think it's anything groundbreaking.

Nice and smooth. Not super hype on it but it's nice enough. That opener is such an absolute riot I have to bump it up a star

Very simple and normal but still quite good.

Pretty voice and songwriting, just a bit slow for me.

Boring and inoffensive

It was ok

lights down low.. check, candles lit.. check, didn't burn dinner.. big check, love of your life at the table... check.. time to que the norah jones.. So it's good background music but too far to the pop scale than the jazz scale for me.

Very enjoyable. I haven’t listened to this record since it came out, but still liked it. Jones has a very smooth voice with just interesting enough phrasing to avoid being bland. But it’s really just a chill adult-contempo / jazz album, not sure why it makes the list.

I wouldn't be annoyed if this was playing in a Starbucks.

Idk, weird day, ebb and flows again which is kinda disappointing, cool that I can kinda hang out though

She has such a unique enjoyable voice. I wish there were so more up-tempo songs on the album though. It was putting me to sleep by the end with slow song after slow song. Still a good album but needed more variety IMO.

This album came out during my skater phase being obsessed with Avril Lavigne so I HATED Norah Jones. As an adult I appreciate her coffee house style but it’s still my not my favorite.

Another that is technically impressive but that does nothing for me personally. Just makes me want to listen to Randy Newman (3.0)

Fun, simple acoustic guitar with a mellow, soulful voice. I really enjoy the vibe and I'll likely come back to the album for some calming influence. The lack of musical variety will be a sticking point for me, though. It began to wear on me about halfway through. It feels like the kind of album you pick two or three songs off of and move on.

Jazz, folk.

Beautiful album. Somber, piano bar sad songs.

I can appreciate the craft. Every song is beautifully sung and they are well chosen and arranged. It's just a bit meh for me. I could only see myself putting it on as background or mood music, and tbh if I was doing that I'd probably go for some Ella instead.

I'm not sure I'd call this a jazz album, it has some jazz players and some of the arrangements are a little jazzy but this is really just a tastefully pleasant pop album. It's a good soundtrack for a casual dinner or maybe the start of some day drinking.

I thought people were joking about this being Starbucks music, but literally the reason this album became of the best-selling albums of the century was due to Starbucks' rise in the dawn of 9/11 and them promoting this peaceful music. How I see it is there's a spectrum between two genres she performs: (1) the 50s vocal jazz of Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan, reaching into the 60s R&B of Aretha Franklin, and (2) the country folk of contemporaries like Lucinda Williams. I can't believe "Turn Me On" isn't a cover... between the vocals and organ, it sounds straight from the 60s. Her voice is soothing, never too flashy, and gives Nelly Furtado vibes sometimes when she shows her personality. There are invitations to sing along, like "Feelin the Same Way" which helps make this a very accessible album. I think many of the tracks are strong, especially the titular track, but suffer from a number of issues. Let's be honest that the highlight is Norah Jones's voice with relaxing background instrumentation. In almost all the tracks, I can say there's little to be said about any of the jazz or acoustics. It purely serves a supporting role, a nice break from the jazz-absent pop music of the time. She branches off into different styles, from waltz to bossa nova to street Italian(?), which serves its purpose to maintain engagement, but can be tiring. I see little merit in listening past the halfway mark. So yes, this is Starbucks music. This is cocktail party gala music. Not for home listening. Just remember to put it on shuffle to avoid the latter gimmick deep tracks. Fun fact: Norah Jones is the daughter of the legendary Ravi Shankar, as a result of an affair.

3/5 chill jazz but not special

Not to my taste

This is American singer Norah Jones' debut album. It's an acoustic pop album that incorporates elements of jazz, blues, folk, soul, and country to highlight Jones' voice. The music is heavily focused on the vocals instead of the pop, jazz, or funk of the instruments, and this can be seen as a positive or a negative depending on the listener, but it paid off for this album. Come Away With Me performed well at release - being certified platinum in the US six months later and earning diamond certification 3 years after release. This album won a list of Grammy's in 2003 too: Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, and Record of the Year & Song of the Year for "Don't Know Why". All of the praise and awards this album has received is for good reason, because it's a well produced album that will delight most listeners.

This is one of those albums I’ve always meant to listen to as I remember all the hoopla surrounding it after it came out. As much as I appreciate her talent, ultimately, this album just isn’t my taste. Good to finally listen to it, though!

Nice background album

Nice coffee shop music

This seems so long ago now.......it was played everywhere so listening to it now is refreshing. It's jazz and very laid back. She's got a lovely voice. I guess the young kittens don't like it 'cos there's no shiny objects but it sounds good for me at the end of the evening.

I certainly didn’t dislike this, and it’s pretty enough... but there’s not much variety in the vocal delivery, and the musical accompaniment and lyrical choices are all pretty safe and bland.

Good listen, very sweet and relaxing.

Nice enough, some nice background tunes. Nice

It's a nice album with a sweet voice and smooth jazzy at times. First song the biggest hit probably. 6/10.

3.5. Smooth and cool. Very nice to listen to.

A few standout songs, and she does have a nice voice. The running time is a little long though

Easy listening album which gives out this naturally soothing and relaxing atmosphere. Would have preferred a little bit more diversity to push it up to 4 stars though

Soothing, relaxing album. Not my forte, but might return to it later.

Not a fan. Completely bored me.

coffee house jazz

Very soothing but nothing going on

Not bad, that first song is a trademark sing. I think we all know Nora’s music limitations (not in execution) so it’s a nice record and that’s it

Pretty incredible for a debut. She surely did take the world by storm. Don't Know Why and Turn Me On are my faves.

People went out of their way to throw hosannas at Norah Jones when this was first released, and then seemingly continued to over-praise it until the world just agreed that Norah was the new Billie Holliday or Ella Fitzgerald. It was all just a bit too much, and waaaaaaaay too soon. But that doesn't take away from the fact that this is a gorgeous debut album. Norah Jones may not be Billie or Ella or Linda Ronstadt, but she certainly seems to be the inspiration for the Sirius XM Channel "The Blend".

The sound of a fine dinner party.

This album was released when Norah was some old music dude's daughter. She is her own attraction now. Pretty easy on the ear. Never been a fave though

Is this album 20 years old already? Nice, but not much more. Very jazzy and light.

pretty heavingly

it is ok, listenable. 3.5

I really wanted to like this, unfortunately the well-known ones are both the best and the template for the rest. Disappointing as an album

Sort of like a wallpaper that is so out of fashion it comes back around to being curiously compelling and quaint. You think to yourself, "huh...that's kind of interesting..." and then it simply fades into the background again.

I respect Norah Jones, she does a thing extremely well and is typecast as a pop musician but she does have a. strong Jazz/Country/Folk sound. Not the type of thing I want to listen to all the time, but I wouldn't mind throwing it on once and awhile. Oh to be able to listen to her in some lounge before she got big, I would of fell in love big time.

Gediegen, aber auch bisschen langweilig.

Everything very pretty, but nothing to stick with me. By the halfway point I was ready to be done listening. Highlights: Cold Cold Heart.

Very good for an easy listening album, probably the best one for a hot beverage at the local cozzy Café. It's really not a bad album, it serves its purpose, but is it really one of the 1001 albums to listen to in your life? I think there's so much more incredible stuff out there than the soundtrack to an afternoon at the local cozzy Café.

Classic pop jazzy from beaging of 2000. My mom love it so much, I dont have the choice to give it a 3

Was great at the time and now makes me want to kill myself.

A big part of me wants to be snarky and say that I don't want Spotify thinking I'm the kind of person that would actually choose to listen to Norah Jones. Or say that I'm in cheesy lounge singer hell right now. But I listened the whole way through and it was perfectly pleasant. Just because this isn't my scene doesn't mean I need to tear down Norah. She's a fabulous singer. And this album was a huge moment in time when it was released. Even if it wasn't a moment for me, it has definitely earned it's propers and its place on this list.

Quite erotic

Baladas de pop suave. Buena voz. Ni fu ni fa.

Very coffee shop esq. inoffensive but also not amazing. Classic 2.5 out of 5 fodder!

She is good at what she does, but I would have liked at least ONE up tempo song… either way it was great for sipping coffee in the morning!

Pros: She's got such a genuine, romantic sound that is so alluring. Cons: Maybe I'm jaded by the prevalence of amazing current soft-female-vocal led indie bands these days but the energy of this album isn't really dynamic and doesn't show much besides the one sound that she has. I know that that's like her sound right? it's soft, piano driven pop-jazz, but even the softest cats in jazz get some fast meows in sometime. The most energetic song IMO is "I've got to see you again" which is a wonderful moderate dance-like track that is perfectly ambiguous with it's lyrics that i have no choice but to steal a few lines for my own songs. Misc: production is very clean and well done. I did hear a blip of clipping on her voice on one track, "one flight down" at 2:42 which is hard to find on any professional mix of the last like 25 or so years.

I kind of got what I expected to get. Easy listening. Norah's soft, smooth voice dominates all the songs which pretty much have piano and/or guitar in the background. Very similar sounding songs but, there are some notable ones, her hits ("Don't Know Why" and "Feelin' The Same Way") and "Nightingale" which has good guitar and piano interplay. The music is harmless enough, best suited (for me) for reading a book to or background music while you're eating... I'd also say taking a nap too but that's probably going too far. Some classified this as jazz??? Not sure having piano and acoustic guitar alone automatically puts it in that category. Her voice accompanied by actual jazz would actually sound pretty good though.

Enjoyed this a lot, I wish I just cared more.

pretty

This was alright, kind of boring.

Guitar-driven tracks shine. Nondescript in the rest. Pleasant!

pleasant background chill out vibes

This is good. Not quite enough oomph and energy to warrant a 5, but a really nice listen. Went back and played it again straight after I finished it the first time around. Her voice is incredibly soothing, it's a nice, gentle listen. Don't know if I've heard the album as a whole before, obviously knew the opener and a couple of others sounded familiar. In contrast to the Kate Bush album, it keeps up the quality right the way through - although it is a little bit same-y. Reminded me a lot of an Eva Cassidy album that my parents used to have on all the time.

I enjoyed it. I really like her voice, and the songs are very chilled. Obviously knew the hits, and the ones I didn't know were fine.

Norah Jones solid as always. Good music to just to kick back too.

First time listening to this record. Norah Jones has a great voice, but most of the songs in the top half of the album just don't do much to grab my attention. "I've Got to See You Again" is pretty good with it's slow syncopated beat, and I started to like this album a little more starting here. "Painter Song" was interesting, and "Nightingale" had some great instrumental lines in it. So a few decent tracks in an otherwise very bland album.

1. Don't know why doesn't do anything for me, probably because I've heard it a million times (like everyone). 2. Seven Years had some cool slide guitar after I thought it was going to continue doing the arpegiated guitar forever. I liked that. 3. Cold Cold Heart's slight bass swing is pretty cool, and I like this song. 4. Feelin' the Same Way was pretty boring. 5. Haven't heard a song that really stood out since Cold Cold Heart 6. I've Got To See You Again is a cool song. Little bit of a gypsy swing thing going on. 7. Last few songs are pretty. Good way to close out the album. 3/5

This defied my expectations in a way I seriously didn't expect- it really started picking up steam as it went along. I thought that the last few songs were the best and most exciting, and honestly wouldn't have minded a couple more like that. The rest of the album is fine, but not really my thing. Jones has a very nice voice, but she's not the commanding force that Sinatra was that makes this kind of music sound as appealing to me as his does. But I can understand why this caught on as much as it did- it's the perfect album for a mid-American mom to play when she needs "alone time". C-

I don’t think I’ve heard anything from her other than “Don’t Know Why,” which is still tolerable despite ridiculous overplay. Anywho, this feels good for a chill Sunday morning. Contemporary pop really isn’t my thing, but her voice is great, she’s a good storyteller, and the arrangements here are super tight and varied. All this being said, this is a loooooonnnnng 45 minutes. Not that there are any particularly bad tracks, it’s simply too much for my tastes, I struggled to hang on as “The Nearness of You” wrapped. 3/5

not massively my type of music, but she has a great voice and enjoyed the album overall 3.3

Interesting mix of folk, jazz, country? My wife enjoys this, I'll give it a few for staying engaging. This album would have been ahead of it's time.

She has a lovely voice and a couple of the tracks were very good but I wouldn’t choose to listen to a whole album of a female singer and I gradually lost interest. To be fair........low 3*

The album that inspired young musicians around the world to make perfect background music for a local coffee shop. (Legitimately great at times, though)

A lovely voice, but not a lot happened

A bit soft for my liking, but she is very talented. Cool songwriting, powerful lyrics. Glad I listened.

Great but really not my thing

A great first effort, with some big hits. Unfortunately, it's also packed with middle of the road content that didn't engage with me.

A debut album with a force of clarity that doesn't need much wind in the lungs or adornment in the arrangements to be heard over the din of popular music and appreciated. Norah's vocals delicately blend aspects of Jazz and Country with the touch of a smoke ring and are irrefutably alluring and playful. Tracks like the cover of Hank Williams' "Cold Cold Heart" show the playfulness, while tracks like "Turn Me On" show the allure. Upon first listening, I'd say I'm most fond of the track 'Nightingale'. It layers and unfurls like silk sheets. What I enjoyed about it the most though is that the whole band had more of an opportunity to stretch their legs on this track, than on other tracks. Overall, the album is smooth and comforting like the hum of a loved one's voice while they hug you, and every distinct part is beautiful in its tone and simplicity.

cozy but kind of doctors office waiting room-y. fiona apple but not as good. and all the songs are kind of the same. i really love the first song though and her voice is beautiful

Decent listen but was a bit similar throughout

Such a good album. Very enjoyable.

A little repetitive. Pleasant. Definitely gave (re?)birth to that raspy old fashioned style of singing that I don't really like and has become overdone, but there's something very charming, lovable, and sincere about Norah Jones.

Listen to it!!!

After last week Café del Mar’s style background music, we’ve got Starbucks favorite soundtrack. Warm, smooth and easy to listen to, but it reaches its limits pretty quickly.

Nice background music , doesn't really interest me though

This album wasn’t that great. I was expecting better for a jazz album, but it was too plain. There was very little instrumentation and sounds. The only thing that made it a little worth listening to is the vocals, and the lyrical meaning. Overall, not a good album, wouldn’t really recommend to anyone but huge jazz enthusiasts.

2.5/5. An exceptionally okay album. Norah’s singing is definitely the highlight, she’s a strong vocalist and her voice does fit this quiet, intimate style of lounge-pop pretty well. But musically the album did basically nothing for me. You can make Lounge-y music sound fun and interesting, bands like Stereolab have done just that for example (yes I know it’s somewhat of an apples to oranges comparison.) but as it stands, listening to this album I couldn’t shake the feeling that it’s just “coffee shop/book shop” music. Perfectly fine for the background.

Cheesy listening

This isn’t bad music per se, and I was hoping I could hear it with fresh ears, but unfortunately it’s not good enough to overcome the baggage of its immense success and outsized presence in my life against my will when it came out.

Apparently this album has 14 *different* songs? I swear I heard like 3 and then they started looping. 4 / 10

It’s fine. Perfectly pleasant. Doesn’t do anything for me emotionally

Norah Jones has a beautiful voice... but man was I bored with this album. Just not a genre I enjoy.

Inoffensive but dull. There's really not much going on here

boring, middle of the road, starbuck's music from the '00s.

First song is good. The rest is forgettable.

Decent voice and ok music. I’d probably pass on this one next time though. 2.5/5

It's a vibe, but I have nothing to really say beyond that. It all kinda sounds the same: easy listening--nothing stuck out to me. Her voice is nice and the instruments are liquid smooth--which is very satisfying to hear. But I can't imagine myself listening to this all too often. I can't really distinguish any of the songs from each other--which isn't the marker of a bad album but it's something I dislike in trying to get to know a new artist because if I can't pick out a few distinct melodies from an album is it really worth listening on repeat until I /do/ find one? Sometimes smooth listening is too smooth. This is like Fiona Apple if she was put through a sander: absolutely no grit or rough edges. Turn Me On was the only time I really paid attention because she was louder I guess, but it was still the same smooth vibe. I'm writing this in the middle of the album because I can't imagine it gets interesting in the last half, right (if it does then its just poor distribution :/). I'm bored. I'm not having a bad time per se but like...can't wait to switch to something more exciting once this album is over. I think all these song end the same way, or maybe I'm so bored I'm hallucinating. Nothing sounds bad but nothing sounds incredible. Free me. If it was just a little more interesting I'd be so invested. Can confirm it does not get any more interesting.

Very calm and nice for a relaxing time but I would never choose to listen to this album again. Just not for me.

Sleepy music

Beautiful soft album focusing on unique elongated vocals. Not a lot of variation to a first time listeners ear holes though. Pleasant nonetheless

Listened to it on a hot summers day.. didnt quite seem to make sense. Probably would have added one more star if it would have been shitty weather outside.

light, breathy, jazzy. OK I suppose but not what I'd normally listen to. An interesting voice though

There is no doubt that Norah Jones has a beautiful voice, nor that this album is lovely to listen to on an evening sat in the garden with a glass of wine in the middle of a heatwave. But it was just background music. I didn’t find myself actively listening, or wanting to listen to it particularly. I passingly acknowledged that I knew the two hits off the album, but the rest just passed me by.

Não ouvi

It's very soothing and mellow. But beyond the opener, it's all a bit bland and formulaic. I don't really know why it was such a hit, but it was everywhere briefly. Picks : Don't know why

She has a good voice, but not dynamic enough for me

A bit too laid back and nondescript for my liking

I didn’t realize Starbucks helped make this list.

The comparison to Muzak is appropriate. This album is for people that don't actively listen to music. Pop americana/jazz/blues. Pleasant, uninteresting voice. I was done listening half way through.

not great

Hmm. This is one of those albums like Bat Out of Hell that is completely inexplicably one of the best selling albums of all time. I imagine that must have been a run on it by bookstores. Not much to enjoy here for me. Turn Me On was great and she seemed to have a little life in her but other than a few other points of interest, most of this passed by me without comment.

This is nothing bothering, I really felt like I entered a restaurant or a cafeteria and this was in the background. It sounds a bit like royalty free music for photo collages. But there is nothing bad about it. It was just boring.

clearly a talented singer, and great poetry, but not really doing enough musically for me. feels like a lot of default choices

No wonder I only heard of the first one

This is microwaved, bland Amy Winehouse, absolutely no soul in the music whatsoever. Music this boring belongs in coffee shops and department stores and nowhere else. [finger to earpiece] I’m being told this sold 27 MILLION copies! And it won Album of the Year at the 2003 Grammys! HOW?! Guess this just shows the power of stupid people in large groups. [earpiece again] Oh, it seems the other nominees that year were Nelly, Eminem, and the Dixie Chicks, so that makes sense, they were never giving that award to Slim Shady or a country album. Should have given it to Nelly, ‘Hot in Herre’ and ‘Air Force Ones’ are a million times more iconic than this weak lounge singer bullshit. Lowest 2/5 possible.

You know, I understand why Norah Jones has such a grip on adult contemporary radio. It's not edgy enough to really be biting. It's very jazzy. It's laid back. Hell, everyone recognizes *Don't Know Why*. The problem is that it makes me want to fall asleep in whatever context it's played. *Cold, Cold Heart* can't really decide if it wants to be a torch song or a jazz ballad. In its shifting back and forth, it's a little frustrating. I can cheerfully report that Track 7, *Turn Me On*, lends itself to the grand guignol of sexual similes at a level that even Steel Panther would be proud of. For that alone, I have to appreciate it. If this comes on at the local wine mom's gathering and you turn to your companion and say, "Hey, I think this song is about sex," everyone will simply look at you and nod. Some things are inarguable and obvious. Look, I'm not entirely dead inside. I get the appeal of a hot brunette murmuring sexy, taut songs of longing and appeal. Truly, I get it, but I don't want it necessarily. This album is so monotonal that you wouldn't even have to clean your brush once while painting it. There is a strange side effect of Norah Jones' slow, sultry singing on every track, and it's that anything shorter than five minutes long essentially has two verses and a bridge, and it's gone. These are songs that could literally be written on a napkin because there's just not that many words in them. It's not for me, is what I'm saying.

This is easy-listening Sunday music. Almost like it's meant for a world that doesn't exist currently - loose and relaxed.

Well... It's not totally awful, just wildly bland. Nothing hits on here. It's like background music in an upscale coffee shop. The kind of place that will try to sell you a $13 latte. No thanks.

something susan heffley would force the family to listen to on a road trip

Lacks complexity besides her nice voice

Grocery store music with plucky guitars. Second half drags. Once that accordion started I had a fight or flight reaction.

Linda voz, canciones aburridas.

Depressingly dull.

Just kind of bland easy listening music. Neither jazzy enough or rock enough to really hit for me.

aburridito la verdad

Nice enough voice but passionless and lacking in any real conviction. Leaves me cold. The kind of music you might want playing in the background when you're in an overpriced restaurant, but then again...maybe it'll add to the annoyance. Nah, I'm not buying this. Almost a 1 but I'll be generous...

Spare me....

Soft and nice, but bland.

Come on now. Nepo baby slop.

Quintessential lounge music…

m'emmerde

Not really my jam

NO ES MI ESTILO

Really bland sorry, not for me at all. Relaxing, I guess? Norah Jones was a psy-op.

Mid as hell. 1 good song though

Beautiful but boring. Every single track sounds the same.

Great voice. Not really my type of music.

Kinda wholly uninteresting

The music isn’t bad, but it’s boring. So are the lyrics.

One of the most unremarkable albums so far. It’s the definition of elevator music. It’s not bad at all, but there’s not much to say about it. It checks all the boxes of inoffensive, bluesy pop with some soul elements, making it more of a background listen than anything else. In fact, I didn’t even notice when the album ended and had already listened to a few more songs on shuffle without realizing much of a difference. It left me with no real emotion. I can't even say I actively disliked it. It felt like sitting in a piano bar, talking to someone while a band plays in the background. You occasionally nod along, but never really engage, and forget it on the way home. The album cover does scream early 2000s, which is kind of cool. I liked "Come Away With Me".

Correcto

sounds like lounge music

Was pretty boring but was never a bad listen. I imagine Kaj would say it was whiny

Lifeless

It was fine, I liked the first song and didn’t hate the rest, just not my thing and don’t think I’ll listen again aside from the first one.

To listen to this is to be instantly transposed to a Barnes and Noble cafe in the early 2000s. Or rom com soundtrack from the same period. I used to hate on Norah Jones, but listening now I must admit she has a beautiful voice. Jazzy singer songwriter is not my genre, but this does make for pleasant background music.

6/10 Highlights Don't Know Why

This is a personal list, so I don't feel bad rating it like this, this was a total snooze fest, not a single song really made me feel any emotion that wasn't boredom, it's well produced I guess, but I can't really tell why others would like it a lot. 2/5

Very pretty voice with very pretty arrangements. The instrumentals are stripped back and sparse. Sadly the whole thing is incredibly boring, if you’d just looped any of the songs on the album 12 times I’m not sure the listening experience would have been much different. Still at least the songs are all well put together. Only “I’ve Got to See You Again” was different enough from the others to maintain some interest.

Boooooooooring

Kaunis nainen kannessa. Heti alko himottaan. Siis levyn kuuntelu. Ikävä kyllä kansikuva oli ainoa himotuttava asia levyssä. Hidasta tylsähköä sydänsuru-musiikkia. Voin kuvitella kuinka ensin katotaan romanttinen draama a la hugh grant, ja sitten istutaan sohvalla takkatuleen tuijottaen viinilasi kädessä kuunnellen tätä, uneksien omasta unelmien hugh grantista.

One of the more obscure records on the list. To me anyway - turns out it’s Grammy Winning and 169th best selling album in America. Clearly I’ve been in the wrong coffee shops. Or maybe I’ve been in the right coffee shops? Or maybe I’ve been in the wrong coffee shops and not noticed this. Or I’m too busy listening to other foreground music on my ear phones to pay attention to the background rumble of Ms Jones. It’s competent unchallenging background music.

This was the most alright album I've had so far. Well executed, chill and enjoyable, but I doubt I'll ever come back to it. It was a good background for my morning coffee, at least.

She's got a great voice, but here we go again with the singer/songwriter thingy but this time add jazz. I couldn't get through the whole album, not my style.

American Idol ass music. 4/10

Definitely one of the albums I've heard

I’m sorry Norah Jones, this bored the pants off of me. Don’t Know Why was the highlight and that was the first track so yeah this was a struggle.

Oh. Yeah, I really don't like music like this, at all. She has a lovely voice, the music is competent, but I just really don't like vocal-forward contemporary jazz-pop-whatever love music. This whole album is like going to one of those high-end shopping malls in the 90s that had a piano and that's nice, it's fancy, there's music, but then someone starts singing and it's THIS, and you decide you really didn't need to buy a new jacket after all. I genuinely hate this record, but I think it's me, not Norah, so I'm not going to disgrace her with the lowest rating.

Didn’t hate it, but nothing about this album stood out to me. I feel like I could’ve enjoyed this album if there was more variety among the songs, but they began to blend together for me. A 2 feels harsh, but a 3 feels generous, so I’ve landed on 2.

Her voice is very good and she has great control over it, but I’m kind of bored by this record. It’s a bit too one note for me to come back to it again.

She’s got a great voice but this was so Dull

Don’t Know Why // 2.5/5

Not my cup of tea and neither should it be yours. 2 stars. Best song: Feelin the same way Was this album better than yesterday’s album, The Velvet Underground by The Velvet Underground? No.

Wasn’t rly the vibe for this morning but I can appreciate it

The album has a pleasant sound, but this doesn't really do anything for me. Didn't really have any standouts to me, the score feels harsh but going by how I am ranking albums its fair

Enten helt greit eller litt kjipt? Umerkverdig er det uansett. Kjeder meg før første låt er over.

well I still associate her with Mr. Dornan so that's a good (?) start oh I know this song there were only a couple times when I desperately wanted the album to be over but I cannot say I liked it

Really nice voice, I liked it but it doesn’t stick out to me

eba uma mulher FAVS (top 3): dont know why, lonestar, one flight down mençoes honrosas: feelin the same way, nioghtingale i mean... its alright, nada mt louco achei mt simpleszinho pra ta nessa lista mas ok nota final: 2.5/5

Pleasant enough. Uninspiring, but gentle and ideal background music.

Och, it’s fine. It’s melodic, it is well produced, Nora Jones has a lovely voice, the songs are decent throughout. It’s just a bit samey. I will add that I listened to this on my drive home from a mega stressful day at work and I arrived home completely relaxed. Outside of that, I can’t think of an album that sums up 2002 more than Come Away With Me. This was EVERYWHERE. A cultural phenomenon. I have no beef with Norah Jones. Lots of people will (do) love this album. It’s getting a 2; far too good to be a 1 and just not quite a 3.

Ah, achei sem tempero

It's a nice album. Her voice is lovely, I don't dislike it. But is all a bit same samey, and I do think there is anything here pushing boundaries to make it an album I need to listen to. In 20+ years time I wonder if "come away with me" will be noted as a album that inspired artists, or pushed the boundaries of a genre. I'm not certain this is an album that deserves to be in this list.

Not irritating

Didn't listen to the whole thing. Not bad exactly; she's got a great voice but it's just bland background music that reminded me of early 2000s adverts. Nothing grabbed me beyond the catchy singles which I didn't enjoy as I'd heard them 2000 times before while doing my shopping anyway. A very 'of it's time' album presumably mostly bought by parents. Hard to imagine many people in 2026 getting excited to listen back to the Norah Jones debut.

Pleasant but sterile - couldn't get through it

This album is aggressively alright. Somehow manages to feel like a slog even at only 45 minutes. Each song by themselves is good, but all together, it's just exhausting. Highlights are Don't Know Why (Which is the one I think I recognize) and I've Got to See You Again (With it's more interesting jazzy vibes). But other than that, kinda a snoozefest.

This is sort of a mix of lounge jazz and soft pop, with most of the songs leaning more toward soft pop than jazz. Whatever category you put this into, it’s very bland, easy-listening music. I’m a little baffled by its popularity. She’s a great singer, but that’s honestly the only thing going for it. The songs don’t go anywhere, perhaps by design. This is music that feels meant to serve as atmosphere for an office cocktail party or a fancy but un-hip hotel lobby, not for active listening.

ganz nett... aber nicht mein Interesse

melancholy autumn music Don't know why is definitely Starbucks music. Top songs: I've got to see you again Don't know why

I feel like I need a cappuccino macchiato. Its a lovely album, but no twist that shocks you along the ride and that's ok.

Aside from not being the Target demographic, this was nice coffee shop bgm. She's the daughter of Ravi Shankar?

I don't want to be accused of having a Cold Cold Heart, but I Don't Know Why this record was seen as a big deal at the time or included on this list. For me, it's the music equivalent of coffee shop wallpaper for the new millennium.

Great album

Not unlistenable. Some nice moments but overall quite boring in its easy listening-ness.
