Reviews (page 3 of 7)
I saw Suede live last year and, despite my low expectations they were amazing. Brett is such a natural frontman and he has the energy of someone a quarter of his age. This album is great as well; like The Verve, I much prefer their earlier slightly shoegazery stuff. It does sag towards the end a bit though.
90s glam. Pretty cool.
Nice scale of sound and the choruses slap. Like if Berlin was written and performed from the perspective of Lou Reed still being high.
I'm sucker for voice of Brett Anderson and string arrangement, I admit.
Although Suede hold a very special place in my heart (I've never since experienced the same fervour around a band as they had during the early 90s also was one of the gigs of my life - Sheffield Leadmill 1992). In my opinion they have never made an album that is consistently good. This one I like the faster tracks but they should have included Stay Together. The more slower songs remind me of show tunes unfortunately. It's a 7/10 but 8 for this format
Unfamiliar. Way good.
Low 4 Not as good as their first, but side B is all killer
Had listened to the debut album before (and saw them live around then), but never this. Most of it is pretty great, though there's a couple of tracks that don't quite work for me (Still Life was one). The Asphalt World had a nice krautrock vibe, and is the standout track for me. I liked the guitar tones a lot in (e.g.) This Hollywood Life.
Dog Man Star by Suede. It's great stuff, I didn't love suede self titled+ thought it was fine but it was also album number 22) where as this I got into alot, I don't think it's flawless but it grabbed me enough to get a 4
boi got cheeks
Few artists/bands deserve 2 spots on the list. Altough I really enjoyed the first Suede album I got here, I was skeptical about this one. Now I can state that it was great and I'm sure that Suede is a band that deserves their 2(?) spots.
Favorite Track: We Are the Pigs
Rich voice, emotional delivery, lovely instrumentation, a bit overwrought lyrically. Extra star for the cover art.
Reminds me of Bowie, or at least his good stuff. Yes it does get a bit pretentious at times, but never crosses the line where it'd start getting on my nerves. Some of these songs are real bops, I'm surprised they weren't bigger hits, because I've never heard of those guys. 4 stars
Interesting. Nicely done.
Good listen.
Quite a nice listen
I never heard of this group but I did enjoy listening to them.
First half of the album feels like it deserves an album in itself - great sound, with clear influences but still sounding unique. Second half lets it down a bit though, it just gets a bit weird from "The Two Of Us" onwards and kinda looses the nice balance it had. Still think was worth a listen and an enjoyable one.
Heard it before. The Asphalt World used to be my song to look at the wall and be sad to. This Hollywood Life is another track I love. The overall mood of the album is quite gloomy but I think I like it better than their first album. Feeling generous today so I'm giving it 4/5
Dang somebody’s listened to a lot of Bowie
Very good britpop
We Are The Pigs // The Wild Ones // The Power // The Asphalt World // Still Life // 3.5/5
Comfy rock, there isn't really more to it.
This album had a weird familiarity for me. It felt like something I’d listened to and loved before in such a weird way. I’ve never really experienced that before. I’m wondering if maybe it reminded me of something that I really liked when I was younger — maybe Echo and the Bunnymen or something. I’m still not too sure. I did like it to say the least. I might like it more with a few more listens. As it stands I would give it a 3.75-4
soaring and overdramatic, almost cinematic, and brett anderson has the voice of a fallen angel
Starts weak but by “The Last generation” I was hooked. The guitar work in particular is excellent
Bryan mentioned this reminds him of Bowie and that is spot on. However, there are some unique aspects as well, so with a mix of Bowie, 90s and some Beatles, this was a pleasure to listen to.
I really dug this album. I need more Suede in my life I guess. Good listen.
Good
Really good!
Atmospheric again and unique, need to listen again

surprisingly entertaining
Didn't think I'd like this. It was different to what I usually listen to, but I did actually enjoy it. Went on a bit too long, but still going to be generous and give a 4.
I didn’t know what to expect, I really enjoyed the vibe. Felt unique enough
some infamously muddy murky production on this that isnt quite of a piece with the bright and dramatic arrangements, but i can at least put up with bad/questionable production as long as its not actively physically unpleasant on my ears. otherwise....uh, i think i loved literally everything about this HFJKHSFJKHFSJKHFSJKFHSJKFHKFS regardless of how its presented the musical palate on here is incredibly comforting to me...ridiculously heart-on-sleeve, melodic, autumnal, and expressive. its not often rock music with this much of a glam/theatrical edge feels this intimate, but its testament to how it feels like theres just no barrier whatsoever between the sound and the emotions. im rly thankful for artists who just throw themselves into stuff like this thats maybe easily mockable but is so so much For Me and id be sad to live in a world without. deffo one to come back to for me...have a feeling increased familiarity might make this one a lil transcendent
really like black or blue - cool song
Suprised me
3.75
It took me a while to warm up to this but by the end of the album I was enjoying it. A little long but it was a solid album with a David Bowieish vibe. The song The Asphalt World sounds so familiar but I can’t place where I’ve heard it. 2. We Are The Pigs 8. The Hollywood Life 11. The Asphalt World 8/10
After the first minute of this album I thought I was going to hate it but ended up really into it. I wasn't listening super well but found it enjoyable. Kit has got me paying way more attention to album covers than I ever have and this one is very provocative, I like it.
I'm listening to this one a little distractedly. Liking it a lot so far. "Daddy's Speeding" is good enough to make me tab over and see what song is playing. "New Generation" mentions the Astral Plane. Modern Lovers had a whole song about that yesterday. Odd coincidence to have two bands using that phrase in two days. 7/10
I really liked this one but felt like it lost steam ab it by the end.
Is it Floyd? / Where is Kate? / Room full of Roxy ? / Echo but no Bunnymen? / Grandezza! / Exaltation! / I hate Britpop, Oasis, Pulp, Blur… but THIS? Awesome
His vocals really remind me of Bowie at times. Which makes this sound pretty good. Like a Bowie rock band. Good stuff
The sound of being turned up to eleven, the sound of a band tearing itself apart, the sound of...pretty much everything from the kitchen sink arrangements, OTT Brett vocals, extended run times. But at the heart is some solid gold songwriting. After this flirt with extinction Suede would regroup sans Bernard, and while they'd make more fine albums never again would they sound so dangerous.
The ballads are a little... much, but the rest is amazing.
Another of the one word bands of the ‘90s that I get mixed up, between a 3 and 4, rounding up to remind me to come back to it. Reminds me of a cross between The Verve and Muse.
You know, for all the complaints I've seen about the list having too much britpop, I haven't really gotten much of it myself so far. What's even better is that most of the britpop albums I have gotten have been pretty good, and Suede's Dog Man Star is no exception. This is a great album. I really like it. I'm a big fan of the sound. It's kind of Bowie-esque in a way. It's a very minor way, but definitely a way. The singing is pretty nice too. The writing is solid. One thing I like about this album that applies to many aspects of the album is that it's a bit darker than most britpop. A lot of British alt-rock from this time and movement tended to be very upbeat and geared towards "the lads." While this did result in some good albums (take Supergrass's I Should Coco for example) it also was kind of dumb in some ways. This album is certainly more upbeat than something like a Radiohead album, but not quite as much as one from a group like Oasis or Blur. There's a good balance here. It's not the deepest album, but it's still got a good amount of substance to it. Good album. High 4/5.
An excellent slice of Britpop - though surprisingly long and loses direction sometimes as a result.
Suede's moment of brilliance amid apparent chaos in the band.
Bit long, but a big great. At the same time, would you want to cut anything from this album? There are a couple of songs that are over 5 mins, but they are probably two of the best songs on the album The singles are great. The use of the orchestra towards the end of the album is superb. Probably, if i'm honest, the strongest album i have reviewed from the brit pop era. I gave there other album a 4, and i enjoyed it, but at this point, I don't really remember that album at this point. This is close to a 5, but might be a 4.99999999(recurring)
Just not my sound
8/1/24. Very ambitious Britpop era album, really enjoyed all the songs here! I'd rank this band closely to Blur and Oasis.
p743. 1994. 4 stars. Quality 90s Brit-pop spliced with Bowie Glam rock. Point deducted for excessive track wankage, and it does outstay its welcome.
Basically every article about this album calls it "pretentious", and at first I didn't know what that meant. I get it though, it's unrelentingly heavy and serious. Just really intense throughout. When describing why he picked the image for the cover, the singer said "I just liked the image, really, of the bloke on the bed in the room. It's quite sort of sad and sexual, I think, like the songs on the album." Touché. I don't know quite what to make of Suede exactly. They typically get credited with inventing Britpop with their self-titled first record, but then when everyone else was catching on they decided to go make this moody album. From the singer himself, "We could not have been more uninterested in that whole boozy, cartoon-like, fake working-class thing. As soon as we became aware of it, we went away and wrote Dog Man Star. You could not find a less Britpop record. It's tortured, epic, extremely sexual and personal. None of those things apply to Britpop." So what to make of it? I kind of respect that they went a different way on this one. It's certainly not for the faint-of-heart, but it's ambitious and I have to respect that. It's not my favorite thing ever, but it's surprisingly catchy for how serious it is. I feel like it's pretty hard to fully grasp this one on one listen, I need to let it sit for a bit to really grasp it. I think I kind of like it though, probably a 3.5 rounding up. There's also a whole side story where the guitarist and secondary songwriter ragequit like halfway through recording, but I won't get into that here. Update: Listened to it again the next day, and yeah I like it. Not every song works and it's a bit dense, but I like what they were going for here and think it largely is strong. Favorite song: The Wild Ones Other: We Are The Pigs, Heroine, New Generation, The 2 Of Us, Black Or Blue, The Asphalt World, Still Life 7/14/24
The ballads from this band – including The 2 Of Us, Daddy's Speeding, and The Wild Ones – are fantastic. Seriously. 5/5 on that front. The vocalist's expression is pretty darn top-notch in those. (As I would later find out, they aren't all fantastic; I'm not a fan of the song Black Or Blue and its wavering, uncertain melody. Failed attempt to be theatrical.) The higher-energy pieces are a little more questionable, particularly ones like This Hollywood Life and The Power that try to pass themselves off as masterpieces when they don't quite have the lyrics or hook memorability to pull it off. I do appreciate the track Introducing The Band, where the vocalist's strong English accent and repetition of the title is reminiscent of the "Sgt. Pepper's" title track. Love the non-traditional instruments here mixing in with the (alt-)rock genre. The low flute-sounding thing in The 2 Of Us, the brassy (yet not quite rock) horns in several tracks, and the odd, spacey guitar filter in Black Or Blue – to name a few. I was trying to find another artist to relate this to, and couldn't quite put my finger on it for a while... Ah, yep, Bowie. Pretty much all the tracks sound heavily inspired by the Starman, with the thick British accent in the vocals, haphazard self-harmonising, experimental instrument combos, and lots of quirky little vocal mannerisms. As I'm typing this part, I'm listening to The Asphalt World (which is a perfect example), but this applies to the other tracks too. A very good album, particularly on side 1, but not quite a 5. 4/5 Key tracks: The Wild Ones, The 2 Of Us, Daddy's Speeding, Introducing The Band, We Are The Pigs
i’m shocked i’ve never heard this band before, this is spectacular. it’s a little over the top and theatrical but sometimes that’s what you need to make the music work. the first half of this is a great post-punk album and the second half is blues revival and glam rock? it’s all over the place but i think it works. Suede definitely shows that they’re more than a one trick pony and are willing to try their hand at almost anything
I wish the vocals were as good as the guitar. “Stay Together” was the best example of this. Really awesome playing and dynamics but the bad falsetto took me out of it a bit.
3.5/5
Some of the best brit pop I've heard. Almost sounds like a long lost Bowie album. The first 5 or so songs are really great, but then the middle does drag a little and sounds a little generic. But the production through out is great. This is really close to a 5, but not quite.
Fun Bowie and Smiths vibes - album starts and ends strong, but sags in the middle. 4/5.
I was not expecting this album to be this good to me. I’ve been downloading songs left & right. We are the Pigs woke me the fuck up this morning!!
Nice little moody listen. Not much diversity of sound within it, so it feels a bit long, but very consistently pretty music. I think it best fits a cloudy day when you just want to lounge in bed and let your mind wander.
B+ Introducing The Band 3 We Are The Pigs 4 Heroine 4 The Wild Ones 4 Daddy's Speeding 5 The Power 3 New Generation 3 This Hollywood Life 3 The 2 Of Us 4 Black Or Blue 4 The Asphalt World 4 Still Life 4 Where did this come from? Wholly unexpected, but that made it all the more special.
Strong start to the album and continues throughout. Definitely an artist I'm going to explore more. I liked We Are The Pigs, New Generation, This Hollywood Life and Whipsnade the most.
Probably would have been a 3 but the closing track was incredible
Sounds like a combination of 80s new wave and 70s psychedelic rock. I liked it.
Spectacular summation of British rock up through 1994 - great songwriting, amazing production, fantastic production.
Love the band, but the album isn't that amazing here, as it became later, around Coming Up
Weird cover. Anyways this is a bit better than their debut, with a few good songs on it.
I like the guitar work enough that I looked up the guitarist, Bernard Butler, and am planning to listen to his stuff later.
For most of this album I admit I was ambivalent, but goddamn The Asphalt World into Still Life may be the best two closing tracks I've heard on this list so far. So much so that I'm going to have to relisten now the I have the full album as context. An easy 4/5.
Yep this is really good, missing a lot of what I love about the other 2 albums sonically but theres a depth here
I don't think I'll come back to it, but it was pretty good.
Sweet album. Really epic instrumentation that wasn’t too cheesy. Still Life makes me feel like I’m having a profound connection with the world.
Very solid album. Nearly 5 stars + saved
01) Introducing the Band - 8,5 02) We Are the Pigs - 9,0 03) Heroine - 8,0 04) The Wild Ones - 9,0 05) Daddy's Speeding - 8,5 06) The Power - 9,0 07) New Generation - 8,5 08) This Hollywood Life - 8,0 09) The 2 of Us - 8,5 10) Black or Blue - 8,0 11) The Asphalt World - 8,5 12) Still Life - 9,0 TOTAL: 8,54 (85/100) I had the pleasure of listening to Suede live in 2019. and checking the setlist, it seems I heard 4 songs from this album live (2, 4, 7 and 9). I was never really into Suede, I always felt that I ought to love them more than I did, but we never "clicked". Not even after I heard them live. But listening to this album, I must say the songs are good, the guitars are great, it keeps me interested, and I didn't expect that. Not even the 9-minute song felt boring. It's not 5 stars, but it's a very solid 4 from me. Oh, and I love the album cover.
Ehhh si Fav songs: Heroine The wild ones :$
Finally a good britpop album, helps that it doesn't stick only in that lane and incorporates a broad set of influences.
The britpop crazy never fully landed for me. At least not this wave of it, but this album is quite good. I really wish more of it was like The 2 of Us and less like We Are the Pigs. I found their more rocking stuff cheesy and while technically very well done, kind of lackluster. The ballads are where I really felt their musicality shine through and got some hints of Bowie that I really liked. It's a good album but not going into my all timer list.
Well I wasn't sure as I thought this was the failure sandwiched between the debut and Coming up but time has been kind to this and I like the (now retro 90s) sound. It is pretentious and grandiose but hot dang I'm loving it. Lush stylish and overblown it's like a luxurious spa treatment with lots of oil and soft sponges.
Very interesting stuff - gives me a Beatles/Oasis/Rush vibe for some reason. Somehow very classic rock, prog rock, and brit pop rock all at the same time. I like it.
Får lite Bowie-känsla av första låten. Kanske mest är rösten? Liknar The Smiths lite också.
I have always loved this album. Dog Man Star has such a raw, dramatic and slightly gothic sound. It feels darker and more theatrical than a lot of Britpop from the same era, and that is exactly why it stands out. There is ambition in the songwriting and a real sense of atmosphere running through the whole record. Heroine and We Are the Pigs are particular highlights for me. Both have that brooding intensity and sweeping feel that Suede do so well. The album is bold, emotional and never plays it safe. I have also seen them live and they were superb. The songs take on even more power on stage, with that same intensity and presence that makes the album so strong. Favourite songs: Heroine and We Are the Pigs Least favourite: None that stand out negatively Album artwork: Moody and striking. A perfect visual match for the sound of the record
Its like one of those albums where a pretentious hipster woukd tell u to listen to it and it sounds like that but actually some of the songs are quite good and I like the emotions im how the lead singer singers anyways best songs the 2 of us and black or blue
This was a lovely album and actually paced well even though it is from the CD era. Much stronger than their debut record - which could get a bit tedious - this one doesn’t.
When this album landed it was unique and different. The band had a really strong identity and they rocked.
This was pretty great! Easily one of the better Britpop albums I've heard thus far. Sounds somewhat like younger Bowie. The playing is great, the songwriting strong and encompassing several tempos and styles. I'd listen to this again for sure.
Pretty wild album, sounded like something from the 70s - was surprised it was from the early 90s.
I liked this one overall. Triumphant moments and overall dynamic.
I found this a really interesting album, with a great mix of sounds. I've never given Suede a proper listen but now I'm inclined to go and explore their discography. There's a mix of art rock, glam, new wave, and obviously britpop in here. It properly shouldn't work as well as it does, but now tracks come together really well. The vocals and guitars are great, and the songs are dark but beautiful and bold.
I’m a bit on the fence with this one. I liked it, and while listening, I was impressed by a lot of the songwriting choices and guitar work. Yet when it ended, I found myself struggling to remember any of it. As soon as I hit play again, I was enjoying it though. Having read about it, its impact and story, it definitely makes the album feel more significant than I would have initially imagined. I do like the glam-Britpop sound, and the last track was pretty epic. Also, I hate when people throw around the word “pretentious” with music. It’s a strange criticism for being ambitious.
Sophomore effort, better Butler
This honest sounded good and I liked this album a lot, it had some like weird nice feel to the instruments.
They touched many buttons of mine. In this album there is everything - psychologic, musical, rock, epic progressions, etc.
What an amazing album, another one that has been lost in time for me.
Not really listened to them before, really enjoyed the album. Will have to listen to more of their albums.
Not entirely sure what I just listened to; Glammy not particularly jammy, more than a little miserable. There's struggle in Suede and not in the listening: The album's well-closed.
Very close to a five star album for me. Every song is good, but it’s missing one killer hit. I love what sounds like a transitional sound between 80s and 90s, I love the Bowie influence and I was hooked for the whole record. I could well come back to this and see it as a five star album but right now it just falls shy.
Genre: Art rock, glam rock, alternative rock, Britpop 1994 Singles: We Are the Pigs (#18 UK) The Wild Ones (#18 UK) New Generation (#21 UK) Standouts: Heroine, The Wild Ones, We are the Pigs, New Generation, The Asphalt World Hard to believe I thought this was absolutely insignificant when I first heard it. It is dreamy, and complexly amazing. 4/5
Great album from a band I had previously unheard of. Really solid songs on this album that are worth checking out again and again.
Pretty good album. Not very emotional and amazing instrumentals. Especially on my favorite track Still Life, which feels like the crescendo of a movie scene.
Much of the album is pretty great. A little pretentious but the songwriting is solid and the faux-Bowie 90s vibe didn't really come off as derivative. "Black and Blue" was terrible though, I almost dropped my rating. Thankfully, "The Asphalt World" is a pretty spectacular recovery.
So many different influences on this one makes it so fun to listen to. Very few songs that I didn't like, this whole album flows pretty well. I will say, I feel like the first half of the album has a lot more momentum, second half kind of slows down. Favorite songs are - Heroine, The Wild Ones (I really liked this one), The Power, New Generation. 4/5
Mnogo dobar
Really enjoyed, heroine, the asphalt world, and new generation were some that stuck out more.
I remember finding the other Suede album to be a pretty lackluster album that did not leave an impression at all, so to see this one do far better in being something worth listening to is nice. I find that this album strays away from the stereotypes of britpop far better than most of its contemporaries, being more alternative rock than anything, and at least attempting to avoid that nasal that many bands similar have. I think this album just tries a lot harder to be its own thing, and I respect that quite a bit. The Pulp/Divine Comedy-like closer really bridges the gap to becoming a love letter to the era Suede is currently apart of, and it works magnificently. At the end of the day, still a britpop album, so there's a few boring tracks, especially on the front half, but the back half is good enough to really let the album pull through. Perhaps I need to give their self-titled another shot.
Upon first listen this has a lot of very complex and impressive tracks. Lots of sounds mixed together to create a big but not overwhelming sound. The Bowie influence is extremely obvious, especially in The Power. Second listen is needed to better dive into the lyrics and themes. 4.5
such FUN punk rock, started off strong and gave me late 90s anarchy, rage against the machine, fuck the system vibes all the way, 8/10
See review for “Suede”. (love “The Power”)
I love this album
It's a shame these guys weren't a bigger name. This record was pretty great. I'd never heard of them before this but really enjoyed this album. Fun mid 90s brit alt similar to the likes of oasis and blur. Very good stuff.
interesting 4*
The music rests pretty firmly in the psychedelic rock genre, very reminiscent of early Pink Floyd. Bret Anderson's vocals remind me a lot of Queensryche's Geoff Tate. The songs are diverse enough to keep it interesting, and the musicianship is very good. All in all, a good album.
I love the feeling of suede as it brushes against my quivering thighs. I make my own suede condoms so I can surround my dick with confidence and style as I pound the life of whatever local trollope I've decided worthy of my pleasure. Usually Barbara the 63 year old barmaid at the Pig and Scrotum. She's a right goer. She orgasms very easily and squirts all over my suede shoes and masks. I make her wear a suede waistcoat, which her useless, floppy breasts slide out of. She is not an attractive woman, but by God, can she suck a dick and wear suede gloves well.
Some great stuff, but then as is usual with the more modern albums on this list, they get experimental at times. In a few tracks it sounded like multiple Brit pop songs were playing simultaneously.
interesting.
truly incredible album. at the first track i thought it was just gonna be another average british kinda alt rock album but it was so much more. very cinematic at times in the best ways.
Really like this, needs a relisten
Thought it was decent and don’t know why it got labeled as pretentious so much. I didn’t dislike any songs but only heroine was an instant add. The others I could see growing on me with repeat listens Rating: 3.9
Great rock album, start to finish
I wasn't expecting too much, but I was fairly impressed. Really great instrumentation and groove. Great album!
It’s like a post-punk David Bowie album, with the mood of a Nick Drake album. It’s good, but not as good as their self-titled album.
Really enjoyable music
An unexpectedly solid album
I really like this one. I know it was pretty widely dismissed when it came out, but it sure holds up better than some of Oasis's shit.
Not sure why it's on the list, but it's better than a lot of other albums I've listened to so far. Apparently they did stuff in the 90s, but as an 80s/90s kid, I've never heard of them and knew none of their songs.
Quite a nice listen, although the album might suffer a bit from trying to do too many things instead of doing a couple of things really well.
gg
Suede may not think they’re Britpop but they certainly burst onto the scene when all the other Britpoppers were swaggering along. They kind of got pigeon holed into that swathe of swaggerers. For some reason, and certain people still do it, the band name has to be pronounced with about four syllables in a very nasal Estuary English accent. It needs to be heard really. But I guess you spell it Swaaaaa-aaaa-de! And that still persists nearly 30 years later. I went to see this lot in La Scala at Kings Cross in 2002 and even then it seemed like a comeback tour after all the fallings out. What they retained was that raw emotion, the pain and torture in every syllable. Maybe that’s why you have to say their name in such a tortured way. Suede is not a word, it’s an emotional pain-inducing device. But I love that overwrought, slightly pretentious, literary approach. I’m with them all the way.
Vaguely recall this band’s name but was not familiar with their music. I really enjoyed and will explore more.
I actually liked this album after listening to it. My first impression was that I wouldn’t like the alternative music description but many of the songs had a David Bowie (who I like) sound and I think the band was influenced by him.
Idk what I was expecting but I really liked it
I like the brooding alternative rock. It fades a bit towards the end (starting at Black or Blue), but nearly everything up to that point is melodic, dark and pretty enjoyable. Will add this to the library for future listens.
Solid indie album
The glammy-go-poppy side was yet to be created. This early record was more tied to 80‘s (dark) wave than it was sucking up to the emerging Britpop hysteria. The production seems to lack good and clear mastering; especially Anderson‘s vocals sound like from the other side of a tube station. Still the songs anticipate everything I would love about this band in the coming years. Also: I may be a heretic but I never thought Bernard Butler - as good as a guitarist he is - was a loss during the band‘s evolution. 3.9
I'd say it's a light four, but I liked it. Not much here that's catchy, but it's still good. It made me pretty depressed, so that's cool. I'll give it credit for that. Because of this, it might be hard to come back to, but when I do, I know I'll still enjoy it. My favourite song was We Are The Pigs, I think. It's hard to chose.
noen bangers men ellers litt middels 3.7
I bought this album when it came out it 1994 and played it a lot at that time. But then Suede's next album (the excellent Coming Up which should be in the 1001) appeared and I rarely looked back to Dog Man Star - it must be 25 years since I last played it. Playing it again for the first time in so long was a strange experience... I'd forgotten how bizarre and muffled some of the production is - it was a bit claustrophobic on this first play. Second time around most of it has clicked, but its grandiosity is sometimes less than the sum of its influences, and you have to be in the mood for it. There's a shorter, better produced 5 star album in here and seven of the tracks are on The Best Of Suede, which may well be the place I listen to them from now on.
i didn't expect to like this but it was actually pretty good seemed kind of dated sound for early 90s but some good songs
Don't know if I know these guys. Starts off pretty cool! 1994 was a good year for music. I have hope for this one. Hm, there's The London Suede and then just Suede. Both sound exactly the same. Apparently they are one and the same. First song was a little trippy, kinda psychedelic. Second song sounds more like something you would hear on the radio. But I like it! They're very British. I'm really digging this album. Talented musicians. Has a bit of U2 vibes and sometimes David Bowie. Wow I'm seriously blown away by this album! Especially this track, Still Life, it's orchestral, and beautiful.
I don't think I went far past Animal Nitrate when Suede first came onto my radar. This album was quite enjoyable. I like the opener Introducing The Band but the standout for me was The 2 Of Us.
I really disliked Suede back in the day so was expecting this to be a chore, but actually I really dig it. Gave it a third spin just for the hell of it. Much more proggy and less whiny than I was expecting. Could be that I've matured in the meantime? Fave track - "Introducing the Band" is a great opener - it positively dismantled my expectations! Love the run of "Daddy's Speeding" -> "The Power" -> "New Generation". Shout out to "The Asphalt World", too!

As an American Brit-Pop enjoyer, I’ve always been a little fascinated by Suede but have never down a deep dive into their discography. I think this stems from the popular narrative of them paving the way for bigger acts like Blur and Oasis, while failing to capitalize on their own buzz worthy debut. My first real experience with Suede was with their comeback record, Bloodsports, which coincided with a reevaluation of their place in the story of Brit-Pop. Failing to be a band of the people in the way their more popular peers were presented as, Suede was maybe unfairly maligned for their slightly more pretentious ways. While it may be true this was a step away from the working class feel of the genre, I can’t imagine those same artists managing to make something that feels this towering. More indebted to glam rock from the 70s and 80s as opposed to a modern reinvention of British Invasion style rock, I think there’s more happening here to elevate it beyond even the most ambitious records that later overshadowed their importance. It’s not as good as their debut, but I’d still pick this over something like Be Here Now. Not a top ten in the genre, but a respectable top 25.
Very nineties!
It's a very decent album which has a few wobbles and is a bit too long.
Mooie liedjes.
I liked it but it sounded a bit like Bowie but thats fine cuz i like Bowie
After paving the way for the rat race, Suede thought it was best to lock themselves in and plunder deep inside their darkest fantasies. While Cool Britannia was beginning to polish its horn and blare out the windows for those to take notice, Dog Man Star took its stand as the most outlandish, preposterous, nakedly ambitious move the band could make; one of many to come from one of the 90s more prominent British bands yet stark enough to stand on its own nearly thirty years on. Favorites: Introducing the Band, We Are the Pigs, Heroine, The Power, The 2 of Us, Black or Blue, The Asphalt World, Still Life, Stay Together, Whipsnade.
Two year later, Mansun would release Attack of the Grey Lantern and, imo, really perfect this sound and style. However, this is still a good listen that has a lot to offer.
Interesting stuff - a little early U2, some Echo & BunnyM, some psychedelic rock.
good record. had fun. rocked out
Excellent anthemic rock
Suede has seemingly been a step above every britpop band imaginable. It's electric. Suede's unique rock sound showcases their brilliant songwriting skills, able to pace the songs to great success. It's a dynamic ride and a wonderful piece of 90'a rock. It tends to temper out near the back half, though it picks up on the last two tracks. Fantastic album.
I've definitely heard of them and probably even heard some songs, but somehow Suede is a band I haven't really paid much attention to, possibly due to the britpop tag which is a genre I typically dislike. This is really great though. Theatrical and brooding, killer guitar and vocals. Good shit
Interesting album, and decent. Definitely heard lots of Bowie in there, and overall I enjoyed it. 3.5/5
goddes
This album was awesome. Favorite track: This Hollywood Life
One of the precursors to classic Brit-pop, probably suffers a bit in comparison with the abundance of classic albums released by Suede and their contemporaries over the few years that followed. Very very good, but just a bit patchy in my opinion
cool but also extremely mid
Tykkäsin aika paljon! Joistakin kappaleista jopa tosi paljon. Kuulostaa just sellaselta musiikilta mitä voisin lisätä omille soittolistoille. Ehdottomat suosikit paremmuusjärjestyksessä: The 2 Of Us, The Wild Ones, New Generation.
Overloaded and ambitious and seemingly behind its time in history, but I appreciate its artsy reach.
Dirty
Sleezy pomp
8/10 not exactly accessible, but has a few very nice gems.
Sounds like the exact midpoint between Echo & the Bunnymen and Oasis. Little twinges of New Wave drama remain, but one prefers the more distilled pop and faux-glam of the earlier records than the overreaching toward the art song (e.g., “The 2 of Us”) and full symphonic rhapsody ("Still Life") which comes off as much too much (though one half-admires the ambition). There's much like to here – “The Asphalt World” works intriguingly well and “Stay Together” is also quite good. One's glad to know it better.
90s vibe alternative
Älskar suede oändligt.
Generally, when an English band from the 90s-00s that I haven't heard of before shows up on this list, it turns out to be a baffling selection for this list, as most of these albums would better to have been saved until after I died. The living version of me certainly didn't enjoy them. This album was a notable exception. It's distinctive, I can't think of anything else that sounds like this from the mid-90s. The music is cool, and the lead singer has a great voice. Definitely worth a listen while I yet live 4/5
If you enjoy melancholic British pop-rock this will be your jam. The songs are really varied and I enjoyed their guitar sound. Overall a solid listen.
It's always interesting to find a band like Suede, that have had long-lasting success in the UK, yet are quite unknown here in Australia. I can see why they haven't hit it here, we tend to go for more straightforward music. This is a little bit prog, a little bit pomp, and quite enjoyable.
What the hell, this is so good. Very Bowie. Very special, but still good. Hmm, this is hard. I'll give it a 4
Yes I remember liking this one
Never really warmed to the faux-Bowie sound of Anderson's voice, but when I can get past that it's a decent album.
I try not to do too much research before listening to a band or album that I'm unfamiliar with, but I'll usually take a quick look at the Wikipedia page to see what I'm getting into. On this one, I saw phrases like "one of the most pretentious albums ever released by a major label," "pretentious" and "pompous." So I was expecting something Radiohead-like, but after listening to it, I really don't get why it's been labeled in that way. Sure, maybe they went a bit overboard on the production, but overall this feels like a really good, solid, interesting, and listenable album. 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4.
Have listened to later Suede albums but not really explored this one before. Not what I expected - lots of their later sound in here but some really beautiful plaintive songs in here too. But I think Coming Up remains my favorite of their albums.
I remember being disappointed with this album when it came out. It was just so different to the youthful exuberance of Suede's debut that I didn't know how to absorb it. Where their first album was a celebration of lust and difference, Dog Man Star was smack laden depression. You can hear the tension between Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler seething behind the music which at the same time adds excitement to the album but also weighs it done. With the benefit of the decades since it was released I think this album is a triumph. How brave for the band to release such a discordant album while their peers were going into "ello guvnor" Britpop shallowness. Not an album I listen to on a regular basis, in fact it was only a couple of weeks ago I listened to it for the first time in many years but I really enjoyed rediscovering it.
i actually LOVED this album. the first two songs i didn’t completely pay attention to but then it really grew on me and i enjoyed every single song to follow. it had so many layers, the music and the singing brought everything toveyher to form #beauty! 8.5/10 !
A very worthwhile trip back to britpop. When it’s overdramatic it’s at its best.
Brit-pop total.
A huge album, grandiose in scope and ambition, but it manages to pull it off quite capably. It may come off as a tad pretentious, but it's held together by the fact that it just works so well: the sound is ethereal and dreamy while the lyrics sing about dark realities and the juxtaposition just feels right.
Karl-Ove vibes!
Very good

I enjoyed it I don’t remember if I finished it though.
a bit too long. some good songs 3.7
4/5 - Odd but good and moody
Sounded good today played loud. Voice is pretty unique and not always what you want
I liked it very much. T
genuinely enjoyed this - such a nice change for 1994. glad to have encountered it
Pretty solid Sound. (6/10) Favorite Tracks: We are the Pigs, The 2 of us, Still life
Not something I ever would have listened to but what a brash style. I found it to be well paced and very unique. It has a confidence and a strength to its lyrics and beats
I've never heard of this group before. I thought the album itself was pretty solid. Standouts for me were, the wild ones, new generation, we are the pigs, and heroine.
Not bad
well instrumented, unique, and catchy.
I like this album a lot. Even though some tracks are quite long lasting, they don't get tedious. Reminds me of good quality doomer music.
Superb album. Great band
good consistent album - goes on for a bit too long but each song is decent like a more? depressed david bowie
A real classic 9/10
thick and gritty rock. variegated instrumentation and more of those British rock vocals that this list seems to really like.
Loved it
I liked the music, would have liked it better if they didn't mumble so many of the lyrics
Seems like the Smiths but more 90s so I'll give it the same score I did the Smiths.
Me gustaron sobre todo "The Power", "New Generation" y "The Asphalt World". 9/10
Good one, long but it holds
Super Album
Wonderful Alt-Rock.
The first track sort of turned me off, but then I liked the rest of them. I would listen to more of them.
Not at all familiar with this band, but liking them a couple songs in. Yeah, definitely liking this. "Black or Blue" and "Still Life" stuck out on first listen. They have the emotional thing going on that some 80's bands have, but it seems darker and more unhinged. Finding the sound intriguing, and unique.
Esim. We Are The Pigs, New Generation, The Wild Ones, The 2 Of Us ovat aivan timanttia. Toki myös heikompia esityksiä löytyy erityisesti levyn loppupuolelta. Kokonaisuutena debyytti ja Coming Up ovat selvästi parempia, ehkä jopa vitosen arvoisia levyjä. Tämä saa tyytyä neloseen.
Good album at the time, still sounds good. Drama queen tastic.
its decent, reminds of a more dark and more rocky david bowie
I like music
#379 I find this very hard to rate, it’s an album that I have gotten to know only this year but Suede were always a band I didn’t really get on with, mainly because of his vocals, which I’m still not massively fond of. The album itself is cinematic and quite theatrical and ticks a lot of the right boxes for me but I don’t think it’s something I would choose to put on and listen to in full, especially because it feels quite long. It’s a 7/10 album for me which ought to earn it 4 stars but I don’t quite feel it merits a 4 star rating such is the fairly brutal nature of a 5 star rating system. Heard before? ✅ Would I revisit? ❓ Listen before you die? ✅ Fave track(s): This Hollywood Life Rating: 7/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Art rock, bowie and smiths We are the pigs The wild ones
3.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/suede/dog-man-star/ I think I'd be able to like Suede a lot more if I give it more of a chance. Their stuff sounds like the stuff I would like (Bowie??), but it just takes a bit more effort to really get into, and I just never seem to feel like giving them that effort.
Well i went back to look at what I said about these guys first record to see the evolution and I would have to say there is some kind of change here. I didnt have much to say about the first but I have more yo say here. Sadly I think im saying alot of the same things. I pretty much said eh before and for this i have more of a eh*. I get the British pop thing they got here more. I was looking more for a new wacy thing then. I would put the comp more on oasis or even radio head. Too bad I dont reallt care too much for either of those bands. Especially radiohead. They are fine and that would be it if people didnt freak out about them. And here I feel the same without the over reaction. I haven't heard of these guys and that helps. Its just good or decent 90s pop rock. And thats it. Its fine. Im not blown away by anything. And im not pissed to have listened to it. It just goes down smooth enough and im off to the next thing. I just dont see myself coming back to anything besides heroine. Thatd the only save i got. I could have had more but nothing was worth it. It was just short of being good. Maybe 3rd times a charm but this is just OK.
It's decent. It's not bad at all but I just cannot begin to understand the album. It's very inconsistent and nothing really stands out from this. In fact, spotify's algorithm recommended me another song similar to this (you know how that works) and I didn't notice it was a different artist. Still, it is not all to bad, you can definite vibe to this (from time to time).
There are times listening to this that I think I really like this, then it steps into something and no I really don't, and this continues till the end. 3/5th of it I really liked, Bowie pop Rock glam influenced, good guitars and keyboards, nice melody and then there is the Smith love, pretensous wailing whatever that is. Sad dreams on cold morning indeed. founding fathers of Britpop that got left behind, and from this record I can see why on both accounts. It's a fair listen and some tracks would happily return too but as a whole not so much. So middling, 3 star
3.5
When to listen: I love that a reviewer said "when I want to pretend I'm at The Bronze" so I'm going to go with that. I enjoyed this album more than I thought I would, especially the first half. Liked the song "Heroine." But that said it was a bit repetitive and didn't feel like... revelatory.
Fine album
cool nice very good buttcheeks very nice
Started awful. Grew on me. I might need a relisten because apparently the stereo I was listening on had the bass up and the treble allllll the way down so everything sounded like mud. Either way yet another indie British band no one ever heard of on this damned list.
I actualy kinda liked this album when I listened to it a couple of days ago.
Sounds like a musical
good
Decent.
I did like it. It felt like it was doing a lot and I greatly respect it for that. And yet, with all this grand instrumentation and all these tools, I feel like it's not the sum of its parts. Like I enjoyed that it aimed for the moon and landed amongst the stars, but I wasn't really along for the ride. It's Britpop with a little more personality, I suppose. Fav tracks: Daddy's Speeding, The 2 of Us
Another day, another Britpop album... At least this has some name recognition. On American Spotify, they are referred to as "The London Suede", which sounds even more pretentious than "Suede" does. The actual album is Britpop, but with a shoegaze influence. The lyrics are OK, but the vocalist sounds like every other shit Britpop vocalist. This is clearly trying to do something more interesting with the genre than Oasis, but it doesn't quite pull this off. The songwriting is very mediocre, and a lot of it is overblown. That kind of makes this a nothing album, not bad but not good either. This album is ranked #20 of 29 albums for 1994 by global rating. Other 1994 albums previously rated by me: Dookie(2/29)-4 Dummy(4/29)-5 Illmatic(7/29)-5 Ready to Die(11/29)-2 Live Through This(13/29)-4 Protection(15/29)-4 Talking Timbuktu(17/29)-3 Music for the Jilted Generation(19/29)-4
Yeah they're cool
Started slow and generic, and turned into a fun rocl album with a lot of very strong songs at the end.
Lots of pausing because I was at the office. Not ideal listening conditions.
Familiar in a derivative sense. Something very essential in these songs makes them alluring
This barely sounds like Britpop to me. 𝘋𝘰𝘨 𝘔𝘢𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 is far darker and more theatrical than most albums associated with that scene, almost like it’s trying to escape the label altogether. The whole thing has this grand, glamorous atmosphere, but underneath it there’s also something tense and strangely detached. I do admire how committed the album is to its own mood. It never sounds casual or lightweight, and that gives it a strong identity. At the same time, I don’t fully connect with it emotionally, even when the album is clearly reaching for something larger.
Pretty average, not much to say here. I did find that points of this album felt very tedious to get through. It's a long album with not enough variety to justify its length. It gets better towards the end, but then again I think I was just more excited to be able to listen to something else once it was over. Fav Track: The Wild Ones
toooo long, clanky, too long! this was Fine. mostly inoffensive, but it did drag. the uptempo tracks were fun, but the ballads dragged hardcore.
Pretty standard britpop, but dont call them britpop!
What I would presume to be the love child of Oasis, The Smiths, and David Bowie, Suede’s Dog Man Star was better than I anticipated (if you’re having trouble locating the album on Apple Music, search for The London Suede instead). It absolutely feels and sounds like 1990s Britpop. The downside is that this feels like another selection from a heavily English-leaning conglomerate of music critics determined to pack this book with as many lesser-known or completely unknown artists and bands as possible, as if they needed the final word on music history. The album itself came across as a tad pretentious, and the cover art made me expect something considerably darker than what the record actually delivers. However, there were a few tracks here that genuinely elevated the album beyond the ordinary, especially “The Asphalt World” and “Stay Together,” which were worth the price of admission alone. That being said, I don’t really see myself returning to this album again, whether intentionally or just stumbling across it in the wild. But stranger things have happened.
There's a stench of conceit all over this album. It makes every song arrogant and a little less enjoyable. It's as if they're trying to make a record for everyone else, not themselves. I can just hear these guys in an interview saying "Listen to how good we are. Even Bowie would praise us." Even with that cloud hanging over it, I didn't hate this one. I wish someone would have kept these guys away from the reverb though. The vocals rely so heavily on it that it became distracting for me. If you're looking for an early 70's David Bowie album that's not as good as his other albums, this one is for you.
A bit long-winded but sometimes transcendent.
Haven't listened to the band fully before. Great songs and energy throughout, liked every part of it. It was long but not taxing. Essential listening.
It's an improvement from Suede's self-titled debut. There are more songs I liked on "Dog Man Star". The first few tracks and "The Power", which is my favourite, come to mind. Unfortunately, "Dog Man Star" has some lacklustre tunes. "The Asphalt Road" is just there to pad the album out. 3 stars for "Dog Man Star".
We are the Pigs This Hollywood life
Pretty mid wierd alternative stuff I don’t mind it but it was a bit boring
Released on Nude Records and the cover shows a man nude. 3/5
This was pretty cool actually
It’s ok. Never really listened to Suede and thought this opened with promise but couldn’t get into it. Bit noisy, a million reverb. Probably won’t choose to actively listen again so a 3
A very decent dramatic britpop album with some touches of glam rock. What shines the most in this record are the extravagant and kind of operatic vocals. I'm usually not a big fan of this style of singing, but I think the singer did it really well in this instance. It can be a bit over-the-top at times, but it blends well with the kind of dark tone of the album, specially in the more grandiose parts, like the ending "Still Life", and also gives the record a great amount of personality amongst other bands from that time. In terms of instrumentation, I think it is great. Not as notable as the voice, but decent nonetheless. The guitars are very distorted with some nice riffs, as expected from Neo-psychedelia, and there are also a lot of ballad-like moments with orchestral arrangements, acoustic guitars and pianos to make emphasis in the predominant sad mood. One of my favourite moments are the pianos in "Daddy's Speeding", which create a very haunting atmosphere. So overall, a decent album, even though I wouldn't say it is incredibly memorable or impactful,
Okay. Fine
Ok, but abit boring. The guy singing sounds a bit like Morrissey at times.
Cool album cover art
Decent enough album but it just got a bit boring after a while, by the asphalt world I was hoping it would end soon
Some shining moments along with some duds.
Not bad at all, some great tracks here. 3.5 stars
a 2 and a half hour album MY ASS
Dog Man Snooze
Really thought I wasn’t going to like this but it grew on me.
Solid britpop altrock vibes
De zang is goed I guess? FAVO: The Asphalt World
Couple of really good tunes but a lot of mediocre ones
It started off fairly weak but got better over time.
Enjoyed this aye
Didn't mind this, knew of their stuff, but none of these tracks. Nothing groundbreaking, but listenable.
Sophie - I wouldn’t call this my favourite thing ever, but it was enjoyable enough. Kind of Bowie like at points. I can’t even tell if I knew Suede before this or not. Either way, this album was on the better end of ok for me. 3/5
*1994. English alt rock. *Sounds like Midnight Oil, REM, Bowie, and Psychedelic Furs combo. *More 80s-sounding than 90s. *Some decent songs here and it was fine the background, but I wouldn’t revisit this. RATING - 6.5/10
2,9/5
this was fine. still life was fucking incredible but unfortunately it was one song on an album lasting over an hour. nothing all that wrong with the rest of it, just a bit forgettable.
3,5
Biiiig album. Probably not quite my cup of tea but really good at what it is. New Generation and The Wild Ones particular highlights.
Men mestadels trevligt!
It’s not my taste but I appreciate the grandiosity. Each song was enjoyable but It just didn’t really land with me… nothing drew me in
First couple of songs were good but it didn’t do much for me after. Not really sure why it’s on this list
Suede is challenging in ways that other Brit pop is not. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is a lot I like here, and then there's something else going on that just turns me off a bit. Maybe it's the overrepresentation of ballads on this album? It feels like at least half of the songs fall into that category. And then the last song is the most overwrought, London Symphony Orchestra-abusing thing I've ever heard. The whole album reminds me of Use Your Illusion. I don't know. Maybe I'm crazy. THREE STARS
3.5 stars
I remembered the name from the other album on this list and was not looking forward to it. My notes only said the singer had an annoying voice. Thankfully they improved their sound on this album and his singing became a lot more tolerable. Combined with some grandiose arrangements it became quite a solid album. The middle part drags it down though and sometimes it becomes a bit too much and over the top, the statements from the press about it being too pretentious make sense. 3,5 stars
I had never heard of this band before. Interesting B grade Bowie sounding music.
Last song saved album from 2
Tää Suede-levy on jäänyt vähemmälle kuuntelulle.
This sounds, at times, like a Spencer Krug starter album, but the slow songs are a major drag. We really need the ability to give partial ratings because this album is a 2.5 at best, but that gets rounded to a 3
coworkers knew about them, but actually forgot what the music was.
