Reviews (page 7 of 7)
Every song starts off really promisingly, but then the vocalist starts singing.
I have had enough Britpop for the rest of my entire life, I am begging for another genre
Getting tired of punk, neo-punk, post-punk etc.
Pulp for Southeners
The Asphalt World kinda rules...
Meh. Too much David Bowie and I’m not a huge fan. Liked the album less and less as it went on. Made me think of a lot of other artists as well, but not as good as them. Two stars.
Ups and downs. Not worth listening again.
There are some lovely dreamy sequences, unfortunately they get interrupted by a boring mess.
It sounds like Echo and the Bunnymen...but not quite as good.
I've tried a couple of times with this album and I just can't make it all the way through. I can tell there are some decent melodies buried in these songs somewhere but it sounds like garbage. The production is so weak and airy, there's no punch to anything and the caterwauling vocals really grate on me after a few songs. I think the Bowie comparisons are honestly insulting to Bowie. Not my kind of thing at all.
A point for weirdness, definitely was a ride but that kind of singing kind of annoys me.
Oky album. Would give 2.5 stars. For every thing I liked about a song there was 2 things I didn’t like. Guitar and piano both pretty consistently good. Not a fan of vocals. Rhythm of music seemed weird as well. Overdone almost
Not going to lie, I checked the time multiple times seeing when it would end. Found it to be a little boring and not much depth. Didn’t enjoy the lead singers voice
no major standouts, nothing terrible, but nothing great either.
Generic English rock, rather listen to new order
Much as I usually enjoy Suede, I straight up think this album is dull as ditchwater. It's all filler, no killer. The only truly stand-out track is Stay Together, which isn't really a track from the album.
I was a floppy haired indie kid in the UK in the 90s but I never liked Suede. You’d think I’d at least recognise some of the choruses of the singles? No, that’s how forgettable these songs are.
Not a big Brit-pop fan
Was never a fan, but certainly got a bit nostalgy about it.
sounds like a parody of itself
This album is indie /brit pop. This is the second Suede album I've had (the first being their self titled debut). I don't care for this one as much as the first one I had. This one is pretty weird. A lot of the songs on this record have like 20-30 seconds of silence after the song ends before the next song begins. Seems like something that should have been fixed prior to release. Favourite songs: We Are The Pigs, This Hollywood Life, The Power, New Generation Least favourite songs: Daddy's Speeding, The 2 of Us, Black or Blue, Still Life 2/5
Demasiado depresivo.
At times boring.
Can’t say I liked this group or the fact there were 31 cuts included. Listen to half, advanced up to the last one and fast forwarded after listening to a few minutes. Music and lyrics were dark for the most part, not worth listening to in my opinion.
I enjoyed this when I first heard it in the 90's. Listening to it again now it is just feels too grim for me.
I quite enjoy this despite there being no brilliant tunes. But it’s too long and so gets a high 2. If they’d knock 25 minutes off this it would be better for it.
Fine but not at all interesting
Not for me, but nice butt.
Forgettable
I understand why the Cranberries outshone these guys on tour.
I don't even know man, I listened to it, but did I even care? I don't know.
Meh, it’s okay but doesn’t do a lot for me. I was thinking when this came up, “I don’t know a lot about Suede” and really, this doesn’t make me want to go any deeper.
Didn’t work for me, not terrible but nothing standout either. 2/5
Someone wanted to be Bowie but couldn't pull it off. And really, nobody but Bowie can pull off Bowie. Which is why nobody should try. The whole thing is decidedly mid-90s and decidedly middling. Nothing standout, just generic 90s derivative rock. They clearly pulled in elements of their influences and just... dumbed it all down so it would all fit together.
all sounds the same.
Boring
Really just felt like heavily Bowie influenced filler without adding much new
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: it was ok Favourite song: didn’t have one
2.5 just not my kinda tunes
Not my thing, not opposed to it, just not that interested.
Not quite for me but I can appreciate it for what it is.
A bit strange
A rather desperate pick of an album, innit?
not now Bernard. a right moaning cunt is brett.
Just give me shoegaze or actual rock, so much brit-pop is lukewarm, middling, meh to my ears. This record is a fine example of the wet noodle sounds of many British bands in the 90s.
Most bands and artists have influences. This album is 120% influences. If I wanted to listen to crappy U2, I'd go looking for Pop.
Ugh this is depressing Brit pop again. They want to be the Beatles and Bowie I can’t do it.
Not great One song had a Mars Volta type breakdown which was a highlight track for me but the rest very boring. Like if you took Joy Division/The Smiths and made them have less energy and much less to say
This sounds like one not great Brit alt song.
Meh
The opening feels like a mix between the Black album by Metallica and a U2 record. it starts cool and then settles into something a little less than a bother but also less than inocuous.
Interesting Suede vs London Suede. When Inlistened at home the artist was Suede but when Inwas out they came up as London Suede. Not really a must listen today though. Seemed to remember it as a bigger deal at the time though. You can definitely feel their influence on other contemporaries though
Overated, didnt have tunes man
Still dull
Beigest
I'd listened to this one a couple of times last year, thought it was alright, but with today's listen, I found it quite boring.
I like the guitars, I hate the singer's voice
There some cool moments and interesting ideas that I did enjoy, I just wish there were more of them to make the song/album overall worthwhile
Never understood the friends who preferred this to Suede or Coming Up, and still don’t. The Asphalt World is alright but the rest is cat.
Luulin, et Suede teki vaan yhden levyn, joka on kova. Tää ei kyllä oo samaa tasoa
Meh
This is British art rock and I cannot say I am a fan.
Underwhelming, Bowie knockoff
This wasn't enjoyable to listen to. Too long and I didn't care for the singer
The singer was whiny and the music was obnoxious. A few decent moments but nothing to put this album near mediocre even.
I wouldn't even know how to classify this, I'm guessing some sort of alternatvie-grunge-prog?
Equate brand David Bowie
An overall unexciting and boring album. I couldn’t find much of this that was worth noting throughout. It seemed like a glob of British made by a band with a gun to their head in the studio. Overall it’s not worth a relisten. 3.6/10
Started off ok but got fairly repetitive and i gave up.
Enjoyed some of the songs well enough and struggled with others. This felt very uneven to me. 2.5.
Dull
No wonder so many people who grew up in the 90s are sad. This was their music
Couldn’t really bring myself to care about this one. I didn’t hate most of it. Didn’t love any of it.
Felt like it was trying to do something at the start then the majority was nice but bland. 2.4
I read that this album was described by Rolling Stone as "one of the most pretentious albums ever released by a major label". After the first 5 tracks I couldn't understand why, as they are a pretty accessible, if slightly arty, version of 90s Britpop. An enjoyable start to the album. After that, the album does more pretentious. Whilst it's admirable for Suede to do something different to the genre that followed in their wake, it does make this record much harder work to enjoy. I expect it probably would reward repeat listens and a deeper dive, but my initial reaction is that it's a bit tedious. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: The Wild Ones Date listened: 19/02/23
It is a meh album. I have no desire to listen to any of the songs again. It got a little long. One song could have been cut in half entirely at least and the others tightened up. I didn't skip any songs.
Call me the guy in this album cover as I tried to listen to this album. It opened really strong, from a hook perspective. I figured we’d be in for a treat, but it felt like watching a bike go down a hill really fast, you know it’s going to crash but can’t look away. This hasn’t been a great week but I saw we hit 500 reviews so halfway done!
Ok, but slow
Preferred their debut - this is OK, wasn't interesting
Stellar, expansive production and guitar on the first few tracks and then
2 Never heard of Suede before this so I was curious but cautious. Pretty much right off the bat I knew this was going to be interesting. Soaring and catchy I can hear their influence immediately. They reminded me a lot of REM (though I know they were contemporaries). The album does go through a bit of a lull after Heroine though, which isn’t really picked up again until New Generation. Too much of nothing to be something. I can really only see myself listening to the first few songs again. Favorites: Introducing the Band, We Are the Pigs, Heroine
Too long. Good tracks throughout, but really bogged down by length.
Ok. 2.5
Starts well but the orchestrated parts are so pompous and overly grandiose. They only really serve to highlight the paucity of the music at the root. A bit like being stuffed in front of the Phantom of the Opera against your will.
Meh
I know *some* Suede fans love this one, but I still think most of the songs on this record are overblown and dreary (like its ugly cover, actually). When the debut album popped up, I only gave it three stars (I'm not a *huge* Suede fan, as you can see). Now I'm thinking my review of it at the time might have been a little harsh. *Suede* is still a very decent LP, and it actually deserved a four-star grade. I even bought a secondhand copy of it since. But this is probably as far as I will go to defend that band. I've tried digging *Dog Man Star* but it did absolutely nothing for me. I guess that this Suede guitar player must have felt something quite similar about it, since he left the band quickly after it. Or maybe it was the band that felt ill-at-ease about the music he wrote, beyond any of the personal problems they might have gone through as a band. One thing's for sure: the songs on the album after that one are way better. But are all those records that followed the band's debut *essential* listens? I highly doubt it. Number of albums left to review: less than 800, I've temporarily lost count here. Number of albums I will keep on my own list: half so far, approximately. Number of albums I might keep: a quarter Number of albums I won't keep: another quarter (including this one)
below average Britpop
a wide variety of music on this album
At first, I thought this sounded like an interesting cross between Oasis and U2, but it quickly devolved in boring drivel. I doubt this album would be included if the book wasn't written by Brits.
A discovery for me. Some songs I find hold well together, others are just over the top. When does too much become excess? All in all, an uneven album.
Meh
I'm not sure what the hype is all about for that one. Sure, this is some competent modern glam rock carried by the beautifully melodramatic voice of Brett Anderson, but most of the album feels clogged with syrupy ballads that you can't easily distinguish from one another. Also the last three tracks are weak and that's all I can remember about that album now.
I like it more than I thought, but still too long and boring
There's a few memorable and nice moments, but really a few. This seems to be a blend of the glam side of David Bowie, The Who and Foxygen, but it never reaches the quality of even one of those three.
Nothing special about this album. They almost sounded like Echo & the Bunnymen & Bowie at times, but the songs never developed into anything. A real bore.
Not so bad, but considering it’s namesake it’s disappointingly ordinary and sorely lacking the energy of their debut. Also, not sure why but the sound quality felt a bit funky. Maybe it had to do with my mood, but it felt like the album got better towards the end, especially the song ”Black Or Blue”
2 stars feels pretty generous
It's ok, kinda generic sounding to me. There is music that will melt blood and bone and wash away the rock of the mind, but I haven't heard much of that here so far.
not for me
I had high expectations after loving Suede’s debut album two weeks ago. I feel so let down. It just wasn’t as interesting or engaging as I’d hoped. They steeped themselves thoroughly in some psychedelic rock influences that just didn’t do it for me. It’s a shame, it just doesn’t compare favourably to the first one.
Strong 2. Surprisingly good- creative and ahead of their time guitar and rock adages here. Need to re listen to this one
Best Song: The Asphalt World. Progressive feel with nice multi-layered vocals and a gloomy lyrical feel. Worst Song: The 2 Of Us. Pure melodrama. The sparse instrumentals, particularly those that close the song, as nice, but they can't overcome the full cheese vocal performance. Overall: A totally average British band cosplaying as David Bowie.
Pompous, overblown, overlong and grandiose, Brett Anderson wants to be Bowie but lacks - well, almost any of the qualities that made Bowie a genius artist. A tiresome listen.
anguished, grandiose, murky and deeply indebted to Ronson-era Bowie.
Brit rock, huh? Yeah, listenable, but not totally my case.
Ok, but not more
"Heroine" is the only song that I'll remember from this album. Everything else just sounded like variations of the same song.
Brits gonna Brit! This list totally came straight out of Buckingham Palace, lol. It’s fine. It’s the Verve. It’s _______. But I’m taking away a star for that dumbass title.
Weird
Interesting. Curious to hear more
File under ‘we get it buddy, you’re from London and like weird late 70s early 80s shit’
I've listened to so many new wave albums on this list, and there's just no end in sight. When New Wave is good, there's nothing like it. It washes over you, and you can really get a feel for the emotions of the time. When it's bad, it's just dreary and meandering nonsense. This is a time when it was bad. Really just took forever to get through this.
Meh
Weird. Interesting. Liked the end better than the beginning. I'll be listening for someone to say they know this so I can ask questions lol
Well, if I ever kill myself I at least now what song it will be to. The 2 of Us.
The intro was ok, the psychedelic part at the end was alright. The power song wasn't bad but the rest pretty much was.
first three songs slapped, the rest ehh....
Never again. Was probably a dope album in certain sectors of the world during that time period, but not for me.
This was okay. Didn’t stand out too much but I liked a few of the songs
Never really liked Suede apart from a few early singles, notably Stay together. Overblown and not enjoyable.
Was ok. Not sure I like Anderson's voice so much.
Boring drony music
Aside from "We Are the Pigs" - which is a fine song - the rest of this record screams new wave mediocrity. I didn't like it 25 years ago... I still don't.
a little precious
Sounds like just another Oasis, but with an even more annoying lead singer
It's ok.
Couldn’t get into it
meh
Underwhelming. Plodding. Even boring.
I like alt rock, but not all of it.
Niet echt mijn smaak
Not a fan.
Meh
Britisk 90’er pop-rock, varieret, lange numre,
I liked the first song, but it kind of goes a little too art-rock after that. Actually it gets progressively more art-rock Bowie like as it goes on, so I can see why it's on this 1001 albums that are related to Bowie or pay tribute to Bowie list. 1/5
Really sick of having to listen to pretentious British wankers during this challenge.
It sounded horrible and that was the remastered version. Whiney 90s Brit rock
Started as two stars, but the longer it went on the more I was ready for it to be done.
Does not age well like Suede
Weird
Bad
Its like David Bowie and King Crimson made a shitty album.
Not for me
Not for me at all
I did not listen to this album.
bit boring
blah
You cannot perSuede me to like this Dog(shit) Man(ure) Shart
British music needs to be wiped off the map
Probably won’t be returning to that one
0.00 FOAD
Just listen to "Introducing the Band". That should tell you all you need to know. It told me, this is not for me. But, I listened anyway. It's bad. LIke real bad.
Child: "I want U2!" Mom: "No, honey, we have U2 at home." The "U2" at home: Dog Man Star Child: "Awww, mom, that U2 sucks ass. It's not even real U2!"
This is just The Cure, but way worse
Heard waaaaaaaaay too much shit just like this already. Kindly fuck off with your britpop.
Sounds like a glamorous emotional breakdown recorded inside a wind tunnel. Admirably dramatic, but also exhausting in the way only very pretty misery can be.
can’t … I want to be able to listen to the album, but this is just not for me and after a 3rd attempt I am bailing after just 3 songs …. the bits I listened too do not sound like 90’s and are very reminiscent of 70’s David Bowie (who I am not that fussed about either) … it’s a hard pass from me.
Alter nerft das Album.
What’s up with all these unheard of British bands where the bloke just wails
3 song rule....did not finish
Wasn't appealing - felt pretty pretentious and I had to hear it on youtube. Won't be back, won't be looking into this band any further.
298/1089 - Too lengthy for how uninteresting it is. Reminded me of that Primal Scream album from awhile ago but slap on an orchestra and make everything sound big, empty, and lifeless.
Not an album i would listen too twoce
Pretentious Brit pop
Wildly uninteresting and uninspiring.
The ass-end of Britpop
Seriously. There's two albums on here from these nobodies. I'm sick and fucking tired of listening to wish.com version of the Smiths, let alone the smiths themselves. So fucking bad
Gear: HEDD Audio HEDDphone Two Artwork: 🛌🪟🌳 Production: 🤔🎧❓ Music: 😩😖🤮 Rating: 🐶(🐶)/5
Whiney Brit crap. And a horribly long double album's worth of it too. Can we please just skip all the random British bands that nobody outside of the UK has ever heard of? Every time I think this list is doing something interesting and showing me some new music to dig into, it goes and buries me with a week of unlistenable bullshit like this. I can hear undertones of Bowie and U2 in this, but it's faint and really poorly done.
Not for me
too alternative.
I hate Brett Anderson so automatic 1 star
That was fucking awful.
BRITSLOP DETECTED FIRE WHEN READY
Pretty lame Slow and predictable. Not all bad but nothing that stands out
Listening to this felt like sitting in a traffic jam when you’re a kid and your parents insist on only listening to a talk-radio show where the guest and host don’t speak directly into the microphone so the volume is inconsistent. You get a headache, you’re unsettled. Said differently, it was like refreshing your Instagram feed for 1hr and 9min and only seeing the same meme you didn’t think was funny the first time. Said differently, I didn’t like it.
I felt like the 1001 Album Generator person was punishing me by making me listen to this. Bad music and silly lyrics.
Just whining here… and when it comes to Brit-rock, Suede just doesn’t do it for me. One of the weaker ones, in my book.
Painfully boring and 90's
Bloated and lacking punch.
Sounds like Muse. Not for me.
This isn't out right bad... It just feels so uninspired. It sounds like every other late 80s/early 90s Brit alt rock albums that this list is rife with. I've gotten so many of these, I think I hit my breaking point. Also, 1994? This album sounds both behind and ahead of the times, in the worst ways. I like this line from Wikipedia: "In contrast to their debut album 'Suede', which exhibited the influences of David Bowie and the Smiths,[1] Dog Man Star exhibits a more varied aesthetic and draws from a wider range of influences." No it doesn't. It sounds like a cheap knock off of both the Smiths and Bowie. There is nothing special about this album and listening felt like a waste of an hour.
Whiny shite
Not into it at all unfortunately
I dont hate it, but I sure dont love it either. Its OK at best, and derivative and boring at worst. Nothing I'll ever listen to again. 1/5
I had a friend who bought this album 30 years ago. I also remember him throwing it out the car window while I was driving 90 down A1A at night.
1.5.
I listened to the entire 69 minutes of this. Surely an effort worthy of a Victoria Cross? Introduce ‘Death By Suede’ into the judicial system and watch crime rates fall to zero 1.4
This sucked
Nicht meine 5
If you're into ass rock, this album's for you. Just look at the album cover.
Beyond bummed to discover that a second album by this band is on this list. What a waste. Suede sucks. I am not in to this at all.
Dude can't decide if he wants to be Bono or Bowie. Was well over this album before it was finished. 1.5
Not at all bothered by this. Rather beige.. like suede is I suppose. Luke v upset by this band, negative reaction
The only gig I ever walked out on. Whst a load of arse
Mais um britpop extremamente cansativo.
Just what I wanted: another bullshit British post-punk album to ruin my day.
gayeeeeeee
Not my style… 90’s yuck
ok first song sucks. second song also not good - hate the horns. song three - overblown, overproduced, don't like this dude's voice. song four - trying different headphones to see if i like this any better. song five - headphones not helping. going to be tough to get through this. song six was tolerable. song nine is emoting me to death. only 5 to go. song 11 - over nine minutes of torture. nothing under 4:20 left. no relief. song 13 - the long version. lucky me. song 14 - just noticed it was a b-side but notices too late to not listen. add this one to 1001 albums i hope to never hear again before i die.
Boring and pretentious.
I feel that I like Britpop...which means I feel that I should like Suede. However, no matter how much I try, I really don't care for Suede. Now I am thinking...do I even really like Britpop? 1.5/5
The London Suede doesn’t age well
boring, uninventive, not willing to take a risk with their music in this album
Not for me
Still trying to figure out what it is about most Brit rock/pop that gives me zero reasons to like it. It’s like a half step off from being something I could love.
Não gostei. Letras interessantes. Não ouvi com atenção. Talvez lendo, possa ser melhor
