Reviews (page 5 of 7)

I hear the Beatles, I hear David Bowie, I hear U2 I hear punk, I hear glam rock, I hear folky-lyrics. I enjoyed listening to this diverse and controversy album, that never got boring. Like a good novel, bit you read it once and that's good.

I am not a fan of Britpop. This album was better than I expected. I can hear the Bowie and Pink Floyd influences and I liked several songs on the album. The rest didn't really resonate with me, so I gave it a 3. My favorite tracks are: "The Asphalt World", "The Power", "The Wild Ones", and "Heroine".

Vrij snel krijgen we We Are the Pigs. Dieptepunt is (Give me, give me, give me-e) the power (Lalala).

When it’s going well, it’s dramatic, airy, theatrical. When it’s not going well it’s a bit over-performative

This sounds like they're trying really hard to sound like Bowie, but it's not as good as Bowie and doesn't have the energy. It's not bad, but it's not an interesting or new sound.

There is a lot of bombast to this album, I will definitely give them that. And those big moments were pretty cool. It's just... the vocalist seems a little TOO melodramatic for it. I wanted to like this more, but the vocalist has these moments where I can't tell if he's taking this seriously or not. Top tracks: "We Are The Band," "Heroine," "The Wild Ones"

Reading up on this album, a lot of critics thought it was pretentious. I can understand that to some degree. But really to me, it's just their debut album but more grandiose. Grandiose does not mean pompous - it's a fuller more robust sound, built off the same things critics loved about their debut album but at times with some orchestral or baroque sounds. It's still got that same foggy sound - somewhere between shoe gaze (Catherine Wheel) and new aged Brit glam (Manic Street Preachers) - but it's more ambitious. And in some case brilliant. Introducing the Band is a cool little opener (hint of Oasis). Heroine is decent, maybe a little uneven or trying too hard but has some great moments. The Wild Ones is absolutely beautiful - best song on the album hands down. Daddy's Speeding and The Power are some other good ballads. New Generation is another good rocker. A little bit up and down after that first half - The 2 of Us is another great ballad and The Asphalt World might be better if it didn't have a 9min runtime - but overall a solid album. I think this album is slightly better than their debut, certainly not worse. Changed my opinion of them.

Some okay tracks.

Meh, it's ok.

I’d probably need another few listens to puzzle out how I really felt about Dog Man Star—there’s so much packed into every song. I will say that losing Bernard Butler was a blow they never really recovered from.

Never really got into Suede. Maybe it's just too much glam rock.

With Dog Man Star Suede seemed to distance themselves from the britpop wave. And while it’s by no means a bad record, it’s not as captivating as the debut - and a lot more grandiose and borderline pretentious.

pretty cool moments but i dont super vibe with the soft songs on this one

Starts strong, runs by long. And gets weaker and slower as it goes. Got so dramatic through the middle that I thought I was listening to a musical at a small theater in the round. (This did make the album more enjoyable.) Swayed - God Nam Rats comes in at (3.3*s) Liked the feel of Suede enough to check out more of their wares.

Kind of a mixed bag for me. I'm not familiar with Suede so didn't know what to expect. The first half of the album was alright and brought a little indie britpop influence that I didn't mind. The second half of the album was a little glum and didn't do much to keep me around. It's an OK album but not sure what puts it on this list. Perhaps it was more influential on release or Suede has a bigger arc that I'm not familiar with. Middle of the pack, plenty of better but plenty of worse offerings on the 1001. 2.56 stars

To be honest I was expecting this to be crap, and was honestly surprised when it wasn't. That said it wasn't the find of the century either. It was OK some really good bits like Daddy's Speeding and some not so good bits that weren't worth taking note of. But on the whole it was alright. Worth a 3

I wanted to hate it but ended up respecting the effort and ambition. It definitely was something different. Some decent guitar work. That said, it felt a little like I was listening to Highlights from the Phantom of the Opera.

I thought this was generally fine but I can't say that it's very unique or new with this sound. Kind of just average early 90s British alternative. 6/10.

I let this run - twice through and nothing really caught my attention. Nothing awful, nothing exciting either.

I usually quite like Suede but this album ain't it.

Liked this more than expected and some songs stand out, but it seems to devolve to noise more than it needs to.

Can’t stand the voice. Too grandiloquent

Not sure I ever heard them. Enjoyed it

Vackert, episkt, melodiskt STARK 3

parts of this reminded me of david bowie, other parts kind of reminded me of u2. mainly glam rock with other influences sprinkled in. over all, a pretty listenable album. no complaints here. highlights: “we are the pigs” “new generation” “the asphalt world”

I didn’t hate it, but I won’t be coming back to it

This is basically the better version of pretentious glam indie that tortured the 90s and 2000s. Not too bad.

++: Introducing the Band, Daddy's Speeding +: We Are the Pigs, Heroine, The Wild Ones, The Power, This Hollywood Life, The Asphalt World, Still Life +-: New Generation The 2 of Us, Black or Blue 7,0/10

This definitely deserves another listen. Some really good melodies on this.

This album is pretty much just an album that kept swinging between a 2.75 and a 3.25 stars. The Asphalt World was incredible. If the whole album was like that we'd be looking at a 5 star for sure. Great ending to the album that makes me want to re-listen, but after a first pass it has to settle for a 3.

I could not figure out this album at all. It was like Hair/Glam metal mixed with folk/alternative at some points and then some slow ballad likes songs thrown in. New Generation was the best song on this and Asphalt World was p cool too. I liked the heavy guitar songs a good amount. Didn't care too much for the slow songs. This had 4 or 2 the entire time so ill just middle it to a 3.

This just wasn't my cup of tea, being long, weary, and whiny as far as I was concerned.

I am going to go with just an okay on this one. I kind of like what was happening from time to time, but overall, not so much.

Rock alternativo, britpop. Ni fu ni fa.

En su general es un disco genérico de rock de los 90s. Básico, insulso. Pero rescaté cositas buenas eh, algunos arreglos buenos tiene.

Tbh never heard of Suede before! Pretty solid album! Nothing I’d revisit often probably, might be basic to say but I’d much rather just put on Bowie instead of this

I was sick yesterday so I listened but it was not the vibe and didn’t really leave an impression at all…

had never heard of this or really encountered it! Fun but kind of a bummer!

There were times while I was listening to this album that I got pretty into it and enjoyed it a decent amount but those moments came and went. Now I’m left with the feelings I had at the start of the album, mainly that it just sounds like a cure/smiths/david Bowie album smashed together with very few defining characteristics. Maybe the combo *is* the unique selling point but I didn’t find it terribly impressing.

Great beginning and end. Middle dip.

The blurb said this was panned as pretentious when it first came out and I have to agree. Not much here for me but sounded fine. Kind of Muse-y. Low 3.

Certainly ambitious, but almost equally overdone and seemingly empty in its poetics. Ocean Rain is oddly more moving by using more specific imagery and narratives. This feels weighty and bombastic. I think deserves a listen or two but for me it seems to push its own importance to the fore and lacks playfulness that could help balance the gravity it exudes.

A couple of interesting songs here: Introducing the Band, Still Life, Stay Together. All the rest drifted past my indifferent ears.

Distinctly early 90's alt vibes with a little less angst. Pretty uninspiring to me but overall solid. 3.5

OK album.

It's OK. Solid 2.5.

Not horrible but nothing stood out to me either!

Interesting sound. I don't hate it but some of the songs did suck.

some really good songs, some bleh songs, decent enough.

Backyard listening tunes, mixed with show tunes from Hamilton. Gave me weird vibes.

A few good songs with a Bowie-like influence, but also quite bloated and feels a bit too derivative at times

good! but disappointed based one what suede music im already familiar woth

It feels extremely important if you’re British, but otherwise? Eh, okay, I guess?? Honestly, if the production didn’t feel so insanely dated even compared to its contemporaries, I’d enjoy it a lot more. I get that it’s trying to sound dated in an attempt to sound timeless, but frankly, that choice is a brick wall that holds back a lot of the potential magic here. I also don’t love the Bowie pastiche, but that’s more a personal gripe with Bowie — these songs are better than Bowie’s, even if they’re rip-offs. Still, this is the closest to a 4-star rating an album can get without achieving it. It’s a sloppier Kirin J. Callinan, or a more sophistipop Pulp. I see its influence, and I like a lot of the songs, but something always holds it back. A chipped gem is still chipped, after all.

Suede - Dog Man Star (1994) WHAT I ENJOYED: the v british accent, pretty string arrangements, surprisingly run basslines, relatively unobtrusive as background music. The album felt like it had a noticeable arc and structure -- even though I was listening to it while doing other things, I had a sense of where I was in the narrative of the album the whole time, even though it was my first listen, which is nice. GRIPES: A lot of it felt showboat-y & overwraught in a Morrissian way. It's not really what I'm into. Jotai kakkosen ja kolmosen välis

Weird. Not in a bad way, but not necessarily in a good way either.

I quite liked The Power and The 2 Of Us. It took me a bit to get into it.

Damn there was a 4 song stretch between The Wild Ones & New Generation that was unreal. Rest of the album was pretty solid too. I think it’s a 3 because there were a couple songs i didn’t love (specifically the 2 of us & black or blue), but i could prob make an argument for 4.

It's like The Cure meets Radiohead but I guess that could be said for a lot of the Britpop acts coming out of the 90s. Overall it's fine but no surprise I've never heard of them.

A couple good songs, but many flew by

Never really listened to too much Suede before but it's kind of what I expected from a full album from them. Overall a pretty good album but there's much better on the list. Fav songs: The Asphalt World, The Wild Ones, We Are the Pigs

yeah, yeah Not bad but nothing special

This had some good moments but it is not good enough for a true classic

Love Brett's soaring vocals. Suede were always the thinking man's Britpop compared to the lager fuelled nonsense of *some* of their peers.

This is exactly up my alley. Dog Man Star is so close to being something special, but it falls short. The Asphalt World is what Suede can be, but they mostly strife to that and don’t make it. 6.6/10

This was fine, but wasn't great.

A bit long but ok

Pretty nice actually

Interesting not really my first go to, but I get it.

😐 would listen to that on purpose again.

Ehghhhh

Ambitious double album but there are too many weak tracks. Not an awful album, but one that I was waiting for it to be over about halfway through. 2.9/5

It's a funny one this. The debut Suede album was a slutty great wallop of glam pop singles, and did light a bit of a fire under the UK music scene in the midst of US dominated grunge. And then the one after this 'Coming up' was similarly full of swaggering original and snarky music that did very well. This one, was a bit of a wet fart by comparison (possibly pictured on the cover). So just classic second album doldrums? Well listening to it now maybe not, it's so totally of it's self, it's pretty theatrical and not that amazing, but it does have a strong central identity and some bordeline anthems. 'Wild Ones' is better than I remember now, though it is a bit too emotionally overwrought for my tastes. Suede kicked off Britpop yet never conformed to it which is a rather neat trick. The best was still to come.

good lyrics from what i heard and what i read. i didnt read and follow the lyrics of EVERY song but yeah.. sonically good too 3

I'm not big on Brit Pop but this wasn't too bad. I'd need to give it a few more listens to make heads or tails out of it but on first blush it was pretty good! Standout Tracks: The Wild One's, Daddy's Speeding, Still Life

An ambitious exploration of sound with strong Bowie influences. Not one for background while focussing! Will listen again sometime to pull apart some layers, but not in a rush to do so.

It's bleak, and unlike the albums either side, is light on singles. But that is perhaps a feature and not a bug.

Not their best work - still a good ride though.

I've never really thought of how much Suede 'borrowed' from Bowie...

Suede: Like the experimental nature but don’t like the lead guitar or his voice. Very dramatic and sad. This list really loves english alternative rock bands with strings/ orchestra. I think I like other suede album a bit better. Would like a shorter version of this album Weird that we’ve gotten two suede albums but haven’t gotten a grunge album yet beside Pearl Jam…. Favorite songs: Wild ones New generation Least favorite: Daddy’s Speeding 2.5-3

What a wild ride this was. How about Still Life seeming like a b side of phantom of opera?!

Very interesting album. I am enjoying this web site entirely to learn about all the great music I missed. I believe if I listened to this album a few more times I would love its artistry, dissonance, and aesthetic. I hope to do this and let the work garner another star.

Ändå bra album. Låter som David Bowie sjunger hela albumet men det har väl alltid varit så med Sued nu när jag tänker efter. Bra gungig suedorock. Vet inte om jag hade lyssnat hela igen men det var ett bra sammanhängande album

Not sure how I feel about this one. Don’t love it but don’t hate it either.

It’s better than I had remembered. Gothier, too. Very mid-90s, London alt-pop. Very heroin chic. A little too theatrical. Good production. The individual songs are easy to listen to. But it can be a slog going all the way through. I don’t think it’s a necessary album, but it’s a nice album. Tapping out after 40+ mins. That’s more than enough of this.

Yay. Ok

Solo después de su época pude reconocer el genio de Suede

Not a bad album at all, however I prefer ‘Coming Up’ from them. Probably because it has more of the well known songs on it. Some of the songs on this album were a bit too long for me.

A little Stone Roses, a little Depeche Mode, and a lot of “meh.”

Good production and playing, but it does little for me.

Wouldn’t seek out but wouldn’t balk if on

Ein paar gute Dinger dabei, aber auch viel Langweiliges. 3-4

The Asphalt World was pretty good. Most of it was all pretty good, some sleepers near the end. Will I listen to again: 20%

Not bad enough to be a 2 but generic enough to be a 3.

Suede meant a lot to me as a kid, they were the first band I really got into. I preferred the first album but this one still meant a lot to me when I was 11... but now I listen to it and find it very annoying. We are the pigs and wild ones are still really good tracks, but a lot of it I had no memory of, even though I must have listened to it 1000s of times in the 90s.

‘Nosebleed-post-punk-reverb-junkie’ If I had to describe it. I'll give them an A+ for consistency at least: 2023’s (latest release)album is as angsty and reverb-laden as this one from nearly 3 decades ago. Added ‘Killing of a Flashboy’ to the Kaizen Project

Reading a bit about Suede on Wikipedia and the critics kinda nailed this one, I'd say. Overblown and pretentious. Not bad, necessarily, but I feel no need to listen to it again.

So while I prefer Coming Up, Dog Man Star is good, with lots of obvious parallels to Bowie (their voices are remarkably similar at times) and strong songs in all three singles released from the album. The 2 of Us is also good, but the rest don't land so well and, knowing what came next, I'm only gonna give this a 3, but a strong 3.

Didn't do it for me, it's a bit too noodley and doesn't have the same energy as Coming Up (which I think is the only Suede album I actually know). Wild Ones and Stay Together (which doesn't seem to have been on the original release) my favourites, but still don't really grab me. Sounds halfway between the Smiths and Britpop, doesn't have the lyrical wit of the Smiths or the energy of the bigger Britpop bands. 3/5.

Really good.

I had not heard of these guys before. Apparently a very British band. I didn’t really care for it much. The production seemed very muddled and hard to hear. Maybe it’s just my old ears…..

Liked this

De tre första låtarna är jättebra men sen går det bara utför.

Liked this mostly

Can’t say that this isn’t well conceived art. However, as with all art it is subject to subjectivity. And subjectively this gives me “let’s try the Oasis route and miss the mark, let’s also borrow from Bowie and then recreate that really crappy 90s Brit-pop composition.” I don’t hate this music, I just know that I’ll never be in my feels and think this is a good medicine. Good voice, good production, unique songs.

Solid album for a genre I don't align with much.

Hard to figure out how i feel about this one, feel like i'd need a few more listens to it. Couldn't pick out any single highlight songs but it was all pretty decent, like the horns on a couple of tracks.

Not too sure about this. It's not a masterpiece as some say and I definitely get why it's overlooked. It needed more direction and focus to grow towards a masterpiece

I thought I didn’t like Suede, but perhaps now I do?

Interresting!

It's fine, but I don't think this album will stick with me that long.

Favorite tracks: Daddy's Speeding Rating: 3/5

Sounds like they really wanted to make an epic sounding album, and I guess they were somewhat successful. It just didn’t wow me personally. The vocals in particular were kind of annoying. The music was fine. Best song probably We Are the Pigs.

I was into it for the first half, then it kinda goes off the rails. I can see where the reviewers came up with "pretentious" to describe it. Not terrible, just very uneven.

I'll start by saying honestly I'd never heard of this band, but I went in with open arms and thoroughly enjoyed a lot of the sounds on this thing. This english alternative rock/glam rock band was a nice find, the vocals really gave big bowie vibes in a good way. My favorite songs on this thing were 'Heroin' 'The Wild Ones' and 'New Generation'. Theres so many good songs on this if you're into this english glamrock kinda vibe, even the closing track 'Whipsnade' is a jingle that got stuck in my head. I enjoyed this album as a whole a lot more than I expected to. I wasn't really in the mood to review an album yesterday, but I am very glad I just put this album on and gave Suede a chance because I found an old band I absolutely love. If you're a fan of The Smiths or The Cure, you'll probably like this album. Overall: 3.7/5

Just good

This is one I slowly lost interest in over time. It was great in the beginning and then slowly fell apart over time. But the half that was good was really beautiful. The melodies were very nice. This one was pretty mixed for me but was a fairly nice listen.

a little too much wailing on the second half of the album for me.

Don’t remember this one at all.

It’s just okay. A 2 might be more honest, but I don’t quite have the heart for that.

Much preferred this to their debut release. We Are The Pigs, and The Asphalt World are great tracks. Some of the slower songs didn't hit, such as Daddy's Speeding, but otherwise this is an improvement IMO.

not my style

There’s some solid atmospheric and emotional stuff on here, but it suffers from the classic britpop trope of every track being a minute or two too long and just meandering towards the end, making what could have been a tight project a bit of a slog at times (especially that 9 minute track towards the end, Jesus wept)

Its good. Guitars sound wicked, solid song writing. Nothing really hooked me unfortunately but maybe that'll change with repeat listens. There's tracks I plan to revisit for sure .

Wiki said this was pretentious. I just found it kinda boring

uma que outra musica bonita, mas meio chocho na média

No trash, no party

sinemaattinen, epätoivoinen..indie rock sound.. miellyttävä yllätys. taas vähän liian pitkä.. näitä 1h+ albumeja vähän modit spämmäilly.. HUOMENNA LYHYEMPI...SHORTER TMRW MODS.. albumi hyvä this hollywood life

Brit-ish

Fun, but also the 90s sounds like this feels tired to me.

Tämän yksinkertainen, geneerisyydelläkin flirttaileva melodisuus on itse asiassa aika lailla minun juttuni. En piittaa tuotannosta, ja vierastan varsinkin laulajan kummallista eläytymistä, mutta en voi kiistää biisien tehoa. Paras + liiallisesti venytetyin: Stay Together.

Rock alternativo, britpop. Ni fu ni fa.

Wish I could give it 3.5. I really enjoyed this. I'd never head them before but this album has the feeling that it was super influential to a bounce of mainstream rock.

Okay overall lidt wierd ville jeg mene

This album is fine. Unfortunately for Suede, while listening to this album I had an increasingly irritating encounter with a bureaucratic process which drove me to insanity and for which this album was the soundtrack for. So now I kind of hate it

Liked it, didn't love it

Never heard of them. This was okay but not amazing.

не СЛИШКОМ претенциозно но и не особо впечатлило

The second Suede album on the list. Good album. The songs have a certain fuzziness to them. I guess that's a feature of their sound. Song-wise nothing really stands out to me though except "The 2 of Us" because it was so different than the rest of the album.

Echoey, atmospheric rock (maybe psychedelic-leaning). Definitely dragged on in sections

The kids these days would say this is mid. Best track: Still Life

Cet album a renforcé ma théorie selon laquelle derrière Suede se cache en fait Morrissey.

Le groupe Suede a à ma grande surprise offert une performance convaincante.

Not bad, not great, altogether unmemorable

I think I understand what they are going for and I do find it interesting. (Let's call it "Nineties T-Rex" for short.) The songs are also good. Beyond that I can't find myself latching on to anything in particular. It's fine. There was better alternative rock in the 90s and nobody out T's the Rex.

Still Life is a cool song. The album probably deserves a second listen.

Really like the vibe of We Are The Pigs, basically it's a protest song, and the horns are a nice touch, as is the distorted guitars creating this sort of murky atmosphere. And the vocals reminded me of Bowie, although maybe played up a ton. The huge problem I have here is that the sonic template of this song was used for 80% of the album and then some. Some of the quieter songs were alright, but I just wanted more variation I suppose.

Ei huono! Jotenkin tää on kyllä sellaista rokmusiikkia josta puuttuu ilo. Silti ei grungea! 3/5

Kyseiseen bändiin en oo päässyt sillee sisälle ikinä, mutta kivaltahan ne kuulostaa. 3/5, pitää paneutua vielä tulevaisuudessa.

Somewhere between Bowie and Radiohead, leaning more towards the Bowie side, especially on the dramatic piano-driven ballads. Very interesting album that surprised me more than once.

I really dig the singer's voice. It's a really nice blend of cheesy 80's but also not so over the top. That's the sweet spot I like with this sort of sound. I'm always intrigued by bands that do what this band did- release a record that is pretty tied to a period of time but outside of that window. Even more specifically releasing an album SO close to the period of time yet still outside of the definitions of it. This came out in 1994 despite it sounding pretty dang 80's-y. One negative is that the vocal volume is somewhat loud throughout. If I can hear reverb tails on a vocal part OVER something like guitars or synths then that's a problem. The album's got a nice blend of tracks on it which is a particular thing that I look for on a lot of albums on this list. It doesn't just do one thing and try it over and over. Pretty middle 3/5 for me. Some nice stuff in here but nothing blowing me away. Feels a little like Bowie-worship at times.

It's alright. A little long. They're a key early Britpop band. Probably underrated, but only slightly. They probably listened to the Smiths and David Bowie and Echo and the Bunnymen. I like them better than Oasis, but I don't like Oasis very much. Favorite song: the asphalt world

I vacillate between thinking this album is cool and thinking it’s ridiculous. Today I landed on cool.

Hard to put a star rating on this one. I liked it, and at one point in time owned the album that preceded it, but there's something about the music that keeps me at arm's length. There's an emotional pitch that requires more of me as a listener than I'm ready to invest. I did hear some Bowie in the compositions, and there were elements that connected, but overall, this didn't het my sweet spot.

Perhaps with more listens this might grow on me. I dig that they're mixing things up, but I feel like the melodies aren't quite there. This really works against them in the songs where they're channeling Bowie. Bowie had an amazing talent for instantly catchy melodies. But this isn't bad stuff. Again, maybe it'll grow on me. Then again, it's an hour long, so I'm not super keen to dive back in. What was it about albums from that era where they all had to be so long? Freedom of the CD, I guess?

Suede ei aikoinaan lukeutunut omiin suosikkeihin. Tämä levy meni oikein mukavasti läpi ja orkesterin yleispisteet kyllä nousi.

Classic suede. Never a big fan but a solid album

It's glam rock, but like... dark, and a bit hard to digest.

I enjoyed this! Kind of fun and vibey and has lots of interesting riffs

Highlights: We Are The Pigs, Heroine, This Hollywood Life Leave Em's: Daddy's Speeding, Black Or Blue Overall Thoughts: This album did the least for me of any album I have heard so far. There were some decent songs that weren't that good and some poor songs that I didn't feel were too bad. The indie orientation of this album feels like it was an excuse for poor production and some questionable vocal performances. I don't have much to complain about on the album, it just left me feeling apathetic and not all that inspired. I wouldn't mind hearing many of these songs again but they won't be on my playlists. Score Breakdown: 3.092 & 3 -> 3.046

3/14, 21%

Solid underrated brit pop album, glad to see it on the list.

pretty okay britrock, not too shabby

weird but good? 3 stars.

J'ai pas détesté, il a de bonnes tounes et d'autres qui brasse un peu plus. C'est typique de l'année 3.5

It was pretty good, prolly wont listen to it again tho

Really couldn't get into this. Too disjointed in too many places.

Eh. Okay. Pretty standard mid-90's British rock

Pretty good, but ultimately nonmemorable.

Even at the time, I felt this was an album that promised much but didn't quite deliver. It had lofty, grandiose ambitions but floundered beyond the two standout singles, which genuinely are two of Suede's very best - The Wild Ones and New Generation - both of which became the soundtrack to my first (and best forgotten) year at university. 3/5.

This is a quite dense affair that needs more than one listen. However Brett vocals overly dramatic vocals are a acquired taste no matter how many times you hear it . There are less Bowie-isns than the first album (which I liked)

very spooky proto-brit pop. Rollling stone called it one of the most pretentious albums of all time lol

This album lingers on the palate with hints of Bowie-esque flavor. Not bad, but kind of like the Lois Vuitoon handbag you bought from the street vendor in Central Park. It will still carry your glasses, wallet, and makeup but you know it's not the real thing.

Their first album deserves to be on the list. This one is just ok.

I got weird comforting 90's vibes from this. Whilst I know 'Beautiful Ones' isn't on this album, his voice always takes me back to that song which was always on Radio City back in the day. I remember that song so vividly through my childhood. I thought this was a decent album and one I have saved. I enjoyed it.

Feel like this band was having an identity crisis. Were the the clash with brit punk vibes? Were they Meatloaf with rock opera and orchestras? I thought the album was over like 4 times because of the number of different styles they used.

Too much going on

This was ok, not my favourite type of music but a grand listen.

Could see myself putting this album on again. This album definitely didn't need to be over and for long... Come on. Vocals sounded like a call back to early post-punk U2, while some songs sounded like the boring tracks off of U2's 'Joshua Tree'.

Better than I was expecting. All around pretty decent

All this time I thought Suede were around in the late 1970s - they're actually part of Britpop. A lot of David Bowie in the vocals. Alright, overall 3.49

Mid table mediocrity

Better than expected but didn’t blow me away

Passable britpop that gets bogged down in its own momentousness. Brett has pipes and Bernard can sling a guitar, but the full record is a chore.

Sure it sounds ok but it's just dollar store Bowie and if I have the time why wouldn't I just listen to the original not the knock off product. I guess I know the reason I have never heard of them before and I doubt I'll seek them out again.

Well done and super interesting for its time period, just not a big fan overall

Ne znam, Suede su mi, ne znam, ne mogu prstom uprt

while i do like the lyricism, i feel as though a lot of the songs are kind of one-note. the production is also pretty overproduced with an abundance of reverb and flanging on everything that feels like too much at times. despite all that, there were still some great songs, especially "we are the pigs". even though i was lukewarm on this album, i am still very interested in their other work. it still feels like suede are my least favorite of the big 4 britpop bands though.

An a-ok background listen

I really respect what Suede were doing, but I think they were in a way a victim of being the most interesting of the Brit pop giants. Their brand of bowie throwback britpop isnt as high impact or easily digestable as the beatles-esque swagger of Oasis or the Art-Pop stylings of Blur but ultimitely it was those two that dominated the 90's. As such Dog Star Man feels like it has a little bit less clarity of vision with elements of what made all of their rivals great but because it meanders between all these diffrent sounds (with great skill and songwriting I might add) it never manages to hook me in like Whats the Story or Blur's self titled. One thing I'm constantly reminded of on this list is that you can do everything right and its not going to be for everyone. I did genuinely like Dog Star Man but I wouldnt say its for me.

Listening to this immediately after the Pixies, it felt like a continuation. Similarly grunge-y rock, though this one feels a little more artsy, spacious. Lots of long tracks. At times sounded a bit like U2. Never heard of this band, and I can't say I'm interested enough to seek out more but there were some cool songs on here. It was alright. Favorite tracks: Stay Together, The 2 of Us. Album art: A naked person on a bed. Looks super grim. I like this one. It's understated, but effective. Also, the picture on this site says "Suede," and the band on Apple Music is listed as "The London Suede." Name change? 3/5

Perfectly competent, but I can spend the rest of my life never listening to this again. C-

Like one song grabbed me. Very good though

After the first few songs I thought I was going to begrudgingly give this 4 stars and talk about how it would have been 5 stars if it wasn't for the lead singer's whiny sound. Turns out the quality dropped off pretty good after that so this is a fairly easy 3 star effort. Still might have been 4 stars with just about anyone else singing.

8th November 2022 Listened while working from home. Went for a run and watched bake off in the evening. Got the slightly despairing 90s reach vibe to it but a darker and intriguing side of Brit pop.

Suosikkeja: We Are The Pigs, Heroine, The Wild Ones, New Generation

Bit of a let down compared to the other Suede album I heard.

A lot slower as a while than what you might expect from the first tracks. Some mixed emotions - this *sounds* like an album I would like, but it just doesn't connect emotionally... For now. Didn't enjoy it all the way through, but I liked the uniqueness and moody atmosphere which the album cover captures pretty well. Yes, it's maybe a bit pretentious and pompous but that's something I actually enjoy! The song "The Asphalt World" was a huge surprise, the clear highlight nearing the end of the album. Overall, I can appreciate it for its good qualities and I feel like if I listen to it a couple more times I could warm up to this album a little more.

Good guitar playing, but not good enough to make up for that whiny keening singer.

some of this album is forgettable and maybe even boring, but the second half of the album is special. i'd argue the piano's presence here is what allows the album to be beautiful and unique. there are quite a few songs that are "epic"--sometimes it's the piano, sometimes it's a nine minute song, sometimes there's a classical edge. but i really enjoyed the second half of the album. bernard butler's piano in "the 2 of us" was perfect.

I was not familiar with Suede, and found them to have an interesting sound. They reminded me of several bands (U2, INXS, Oasis, The Smiths) all rolled into one, and with varying intensities at different given points. I was definitely surprised at the strong presence of 80s new wave and 80s moody alt rock sounds, as those genres had been heavily put to bed at this point in favor of grunge and 90s alt rock sounds. Overall, the album was an okay listen, but it didn't resonate too much with me. I thought it touched on a lot of great sounds, but ultimately I couldn't quite escape from comparing Suede to who they SOUND like.

Great sound

Another one I wanted to like more than I really did. I think Suede's done better albums than this, despite this being the critic's favourite. Really incredible vocals, and some decent moments. A lot of the songs were snoozers though. I listened to this one three times but it didn't click. Maybe need to listen more? 3 stars for now, sorry Suede.

Tentative review. Unable to give a proper listen. (3.5, subject to change)

pretty bowie like the early songs are bleh but some of the later ballads are kinda interesting

Mid level rock album

didn't work for me

Not into the slower stuff

Very similar to Bowie in a more pessimistic kind of way. Not every songs are great in this album, but I mostly had a great time!

What the dooog doin??

Enjoyed the listen! Not a lot of memorable lines, but I liked the overall tone and would give it a fourth listen

better than debut, still sounds slike smiths a lot of the time

i like that they're taking chances, i just can't handle too much of that histrionic vocal style

The definition of bland to me. I didn't really find it all that interesting. Never seemed to go anywhere and always just felt present but not exceptional. 2.5/5

Not bad, pretty emo in most cases. A little Type O Negative flavor to it.

3.5 - Its strong emotional intensity is too theatrical in a “Phantom of the Opera” sort of way. I like the vocals and some songs like “Daddy’s Speeding” are pretty. But it’s just too big and insistent.

A little smarmy but ok

Decent art rock album. Not too many of the songs stuck with me to make me want to relisten. 5/10

Just a bit boring

Non lo so, non mi convince, finisco domani. Non è malvagio andando avanti, ma mi sembrano tutte scollegate l'una dall'altra. Molto bella 'Still Life'

- this is difficult for me to describe and i've been trying to write something about this album for 10 min (blame it on the mans arse?) - i listened to it twice, second time was much better. it's like I want to like it but can't.

This was quite good, although I think I prefer Suede's first album better. There are some elegant, soaring arrangements and nice use of strings. The album really could have been cut by several songs and been much better. Fave Songs: The Asphalt World, Still Life, The 2 of Us, The Power, The Wild Ones, Daddy's Speeding, Heroine

A love it or hate it voice. Decent britpop. 6-7/10

Fínt 90s.

Pretty weird production. Can't really put my finger on it, but it sounds a bit off. Clearly EXTREMELY influenced by David Bowie. The lead singer is basically doing a Bowie impression. This seemed like something I would generally enjoy a lot, but nothing really caught my attention other than "We are the Pigs", "Heroine" and "The 2 Of Us". It wasn't bad though, actually pretty above average, like a 6.5/10.

Some call this a masterpiece. Some call it the most pretentious album of all time. I don't think it is either. It's like a record of Bowie at his most bombastic, full of melodrama and overblown, over-arranged songs. Surprisingly coherent, given the band broke up while recording it, taking their musical force out of the band. This is a fair album, a brave swing for the outfield that doesn't quite get there. I admire the ambition, even if it does veer into self-importance (think Us at their worst). I really could have done without so much reverb slathered over EVERYTHING, which tends to turn this into a muddy mess to listen to.

Enjoyable, at least the parts that aren't overly long and self-indulgent. Some of it is reminiscent of the songs Maxwell Caulfield's character performed in "Grease 2". That's probably a compliment.

It was dark and moody, but I didn't find it all that interesting. I wanted to like it more.

Suede is great but this otherwise great album is bothered with lousy production

A good first half.

I liked it

ok, most songs sound the same

Not bad. This one gets a solid Meh.

It’s surprising how hard the first couple of songs are and then it gets into soft contemplative pieces.

I was with friends in a Wetherspoons in Bristol when a large, middle-aged man with earphones in came and sat next to me at our table, uninvited. After a few uncomfortable minutes I asked him what he was listening to. He leaned over and said 'We Are The Pigs', before sticking one of the earphones in my ear. That was my first introduction to this album, I guess. Anyway... I used to mistrust Suede for no particular reason, before getting into them in my mid-20s. This album isn't their most britpop-y or accessible - it's darker and more cinematic. 'Stately', I'd say. I like the abrasive guitars of WATP and This Hollywood Life, and the melodic The Wild Ones. Stay Together is the best of the bunch though I don't think it's technically part of the album... Actually I like most of it, but I can see that it's a bit overblown and does drag somewhat, especially towards the end.

Really like the music. The vocals are fantastic on a lot of songs but less so on others (I should probably back that up with examples...) This Hollywood Life and Stay Together are the best songs. My only fact about Suede is that the brother of Richard Osman plays bass.

I'd only heard "Metal Mickey" before this. It was overall a decent album, I found the vocals a bit annoying after a while. I didn't see a whole lot of reason to return to it.

The 2 of us and Still life had some serious Phantom of the opera vibes.

A second Suede album... I want some female content please... The album that broke the band, soaked in reverb and acid, makes me have visions of other tasty musical treats from the 90s. Some Neds Atomic Dustbin would have hit the spot more so than this one.

Dog man star took a suck on a pill And stabbed a cerebellum with a curious quill First album was a bit better Introducing the band

Interesting stuff. Wasn't familiar with them before.

It's funny I mean it sounds great and clearly Brett has an awesome voice however I find some of it a bit samey.

Alright

Normal

Rating: 5/10

Overall, it was okay. Maybe even pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it, but wouldn't rush to turn it off either. Production not great - some good ideas, but poorly mixed and sounds muddy. Excessive reverbs and delays don't help with this. Superfluous strings. Highly pretentious. I don't think either Brett Anderson or Bernard Butler were as musically gifted back then as they seemed to think they were. But... I like a lot of the songs. Often dark and broody, and yet somehow sounding optimistic. Very Bowie-esque. I like that some of the guitars were clearly recorded very loud and on the edge of uncontrollable feedback.

Better than I expected.

Not terrible. I'll need to listen more to it, but it's not awful at least from what I can tell.

some gems among all the weird

Fascinating. I’ve never heard of this. Enjoyable.

Pretty good, bit boring sometimes due to it feeling quite workmanlike.

This is why I could never be a music critic - it's my first album on this site and I'm already abundantly conflicted about how I feel. If you like Bowie-esque vocals you'll probably have an easier time loving this album than I did. Fun fact: 10 of NME's "500 Greatest Albums" are by Bowie, so it's no surprise they love Suede as well. "The Wild Ones" and "Still Life" were genuinely pretty, and the last few minutes of "The Asphalt World" pays off with a big buildup. There were a few tracks, like "This Hollywood Life" and "Daddy's Speeding", that had captivating intros, but the actual song just kind of plodded along. At several junctures I was prepared to write off this album as boring, but then I'd hear a sequence that would pull me back in. By the end of the listen I feel more receptive than when I started...but I'm not sure I'm ready to buy Suede's full discography either.

Rock opera feel. Kind of like dream theater but. less impressive instrumentals. Back side soulful, somewhat enjoyable

Just about got into it! Some cool production and guitar tones. Like a lot of British music (not sure why this is the case and other countries have their own faults), this quickly becomes cheesy and shoe-gazey. The last track works when they got out of their own way a bit and just played, but not sure I would be back to listen to the other tracks.

started strong. lost steam around the middle to the end of the album. lots of slow jams.

Cooles Album

Bemerkenswert. Ich muss dasselbe geben wie bei urban hymns von the verve. Beide sind super werden mich aber nie ganz abholen

OK. Nothing special

I don't know. I remember Rich liked it a lot and there was one song I loved at Uni. But the old 'would I listen to it again ' test? I probably wouldn't.

I don't know what to say about it. Maybe it's okay.

La verdad yo soy de la idea que Suede es un grupo de singles. El disco me aburrió pero pues son la mejor banda tributo a Bowie, le voy a dar más estrellas que lo que honestamente le daría, me vale.

Way better than I expected. ***

Pretty boring. Creeped me out a bit. Bowie vibes, but has quite a dark feeling Unique voice, but a bit too ...screetchy. Qutie a few nice songs

Levyn alussa Introducing the band herätti toiveet positiivisesta yllätyksestä, mutta ei se loppulevy sitten kuitenkaan oikein puhutellut. Aika raskassoutuituista tavaraa.

there's some cool stuff but the moodier songs on here are so extremely overwrought. low 6

I didn't realize how much they sound like Bauhaus and earlier goth

Not that keen to start with but it did grow on me. A couple of really good tracks towards the end.

Was cool haven't listened to them outside of that one song I know

"We Are the Pigs" Released: 12 September 1994 "The Wild Ones" Released: 7 November 1994 "New Generation" Released: 30 January 1995

Idk lol

Auch hier #listenagain

Rock suave. Un poco aburrido.

I liked it, fine enough.

Oasis, but raised by an abusive mother. Nice drums, vocals, and guitar riffs

I don't know if it's the most pretentious album in rock and roll but it's pretty overblown. Treated as humor it's not so bad.

Pretty generic Britpop. Again, has some vocal parts that are very U2esque which I hate. There is some nice instrumentation going on, but this feels very 1994, so I guess I can't fault it too much.

Bowie cover album, including the title

Not a bad album. Probably don't listen again, but it's not bad.

Better than I remembered

cool. late 80's brit pop

this is pretty cool, sounds like a cross between maybe U2 and something like Oasis? Might even listen to this again at some point.

Noun noun noun. It had its moments, but there is much better Brit Pop I’d rather be listening to.

This album sounds dated even for the 90s. Full of strange vocal effects, ploddy glam rock rhythms, mopish melancholy lyrics, and dense as lead. I also don't love Anderson's vocals - it's like a wimpy David Bowie, with none of the charisma. "Still Life" is fantastic, however.

My opinion of this band has not been suede after getting a second album of theirs within a week. Still a 2.

Unlike the self-titled, debut album by Suede this record is actually tolerable. The music is strong and the vocals are inline with the era’s music. This is far from a favorite, but I did make it through the entire listen without pleading for it to be over.

I’m growing weary of British people and the bands they think are good. Better fabrics to listen to than Suede - Nights in White Satin Corduroy Plush Leather and Lace Suedehead Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat And pretty much anything by the Velvet Underground .

If I read one more review comparing them to Bowie I'm going to lose my mind, sure the voice is similar in spots, but to compare this to Bowie is absurd. Thank god this is the last suede album we need to endure.

Nie wiem, jakieś takie zbyt alternatywne. 2

Nichts das in Erinnerung bleibt

I get that the band was in a transitional state, and that they wer big in the UK, but this is... not good. You can't open up with that sludgy stuff, and then give me an hour of, let's face it, sub-average Britpop. There's a reason this band is relatively unheard of here in the States. The guy sings way above his range half the time, and it's just not remarkable. You can hear the band falling apart in real time, and the album never recovers from that fracture. There are moments where the music is beautiful, but then the singer starts up. And "Still Life"? Get off the stage, you ponces. You're not that good. Dimery, go suck eggs. My Rating: 2/5

Meh. 2/5
