Reviews (page 6 of 8)
A great album but feels a little dated now. Possibly because I overplayed it a lot when it was released so it's firmly stuck at a certain point in time for me and I can't shake that off to listen impartially.
Starts off sounding like REM ends up sounding like Travis, weak second half of the album
I dont know why this is here. It's not terrible, but nothing that feels especially noteworthy. I could give it a 2 or a 3. I think I'll go with 3 just because they made Don't Dream It's Over (which does not even appear on this album)
it’s a nice record. the vocals carry the simple yet successful instrumentals fav tracks: it’s only natural, fall at your feet, whispers n moans, all i ask,, as sure as i am, italian plastic
treads the line between hollywood spy and dysfunctional family road trip but i can see it would be more enjoyable if i was off shrooms, i love environmental albums i respect the message fav songs: chocolate cake (gaby ;)), four seasons in one day, all i ask, italian plastic
Bit of a mixed bag. It starts off really bad. It's just a bit boring, and the lyrics are terrible. But there's some nice songs in here like Fall at Your Feet and Four Seasons in One Day, and Weather With You is a good tune too. Overall, it's just a bit mediocre / soft / middle of the road I think.
Half of it I like, half is a lil too slow for me Pacing on album is weird. I'd never heard of them before but I'll see if there's other stuff they did that I like
sonne mieux en situation de gueule de bois comme indiqué
It was alright I guess. Gave me an REM feel about it but with a lot less fun
Great set of pop tunes. Songwriting, melodies, and harmonies are all spot on. Reminds me a little bit of Rubber Soul era Beatles, a little bit of early Matthew Sweet, and maybe Robyn Hitchcock, though it lacks the edge of the latter two artists.
Not for me. It’s well produced and it has a couple good songs, but I’m not sure how this makes it and we don’t get any Squeeze records on this list.
This was quite good. 3/5
Pleasant enough when you’re listening to it, but absolutely forgettable after the moment passes. I couldn’t name a single song or hook. C-
Strong 3, pretty good
Liked some of the power pop style tracks in the first half, but gets a bit slower and draggy in the second. Standouts: Fall At Your Feet, Four Seasons in One Day
classic SplitEnz/Crowded House sound. always great musicianship. has that early 90s sound. may not have held up as well as the seminal Crowded House.
Somewhere between a 3-4 but I think a little closer to a 3
I really was convinced I had heard every one of these songs in a cheesy rom com….not terrible not my fave. I’ll go 2.7
Highlight: Weather With You 3,5/5
25-Oct-2022 Listened to this while working and enjoyed it for the most part. I'm familiar with Crowded House's big hits, but I think this is the first time I've listened to this album in full. For some reason, I used to think "Weather With You" was a Housemartins song. Anyway, I enjoyed the first half of the album more than the second, towards the end I felt like it was starting to outstay its welcome. However that might change on a second listen, if I have the time.
Mellow and good beat to it. Enjoyed it
This is sounds like the Australian wannabe Beatles.
My names woodface and I care what you think 3.5/5
fine
Loved the cynical humor of “Chocolate Cake.” Songs each present something new. “Whispers and Moans” boring. Some good love songs. Weird medley ending.
I really enjoyed this album. It was a chill listen and the songs were creative.
Ok at best
I actually liked this a lot Album Cover: I like it 3/5
Pleasant, melodic pop music. Not Crowded House's best album, but it was nice hearing the Finn brothers together again. Tim brings a little of the old Split Enz kookiness that you don't really expect on a typical Neil/Crowded House album. It's mostly welcome, but the hidden track at the end seems out of place/just odd. Fave Songs: Four Seasons in One Day, Fall at Your Feet, It's Only Natural, Chocolate Cake, There Goes God, Whispers and Moans, Weather with You
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Fall At Your Feet (3) 2 - Tall Trees (4) 3 - Fame Is (9)
Just ok, some catchy tunes in there but not a real standout to me
I’m a bit torn, the first majority of the album I was definitely feeling a 3, but I liked the later parts more on average It’s quality for what it is, but it’s not so much for me Favorites: fall at your feet, fame is, all I ask
Very nice if you like fine
Absurdly strong start in 'Chocolate Cake' which is never quite lived up to on the remainder of the album. A weird mix of catchy pop-psychedelica including the grossly overplayed 'Weather With You'. 10/10 artwork and title.
Wont relisten but enjoyed
Not bad
not bad
a pretty average album to me, nothing stood out too much. favorite tracks were: It's only natural, fall at your feet, and four seasons in one day
Really enjoyed this album!
Enjoyed: yeah Listens: 3 Not particularly something I'd rush back too, not that it was bad, it just didn't stand out besides one or two songs
Well-crafted and pretty flawless album, but a bit light-weight to be in the list (3 stars in 1991.. 3 stars in 2022).
Best gezapig, maar applaus voor ‘Fall at your feet’. Ook mooi in de uitvoering van Boy & Bear.
Okay
I keep going back and forth between this is a "great" album and this is a "good" album. Some tracks really do sound amazing like "Fall at Your Feet" and "It's Only Natural" but others come across as cheesy. Ultimately I decided to give this album 3 instead of 4 stars because I only see myself returning to a few tracks, and even then rarely.
6th September 2022 Listened on the drive to Bristol to work in the office before the broadcast. A generally middle of the road album with some outstanding tracks. Lyrically interesting and he has a good voice. 3.5 if I could.
3/5 nice background music
One thing I didn't know about Crowded House before this album showed up on this list is that some members used to be in Split Enz (a bit of a one hit wonder outside of Oceania but I Got You is a fun 80s tune). Massive singles from their debut album (Don't Dream It's Over and Something so Strong) still get regular radio airplay in Canada; surprised this isn't the one album of theirs on this list. I also know Better Be Home Soon off their second album and Distant Sun off their fourth album. Off this album, I know Fall at Your Feet and Weather With You (both fun or nostalgic). But I don't think I was missing much not knowing the other songs (although Tall Trees was as good as those other two). Perfectly average and unmemorable.
Bien, para un 3
Good but a little meandering
overall nothing very standout about this album, more of a background/ambient listen. standout tracks: chocolate cake, 70s classic rock vibes; fall at your feet, slower rock ballad.
-"Chocolate Cake" is a great track. Super catchy, cool instrumentation. Cool bass in the bridge area -"Tall Trees" is another great tune. Drums push the upbeat tone of the track -"Italian Plastic" is a fun psychedelic-y track, and the end but is cool with the switch up. -rest of the album is pretty bland
Pretty fun pop rock with some gorgeous production. I dig it! Doesn't do anything super groundbreaking but it's catchy af.
ok
An ok album, nothing special but enjoyable.
Easy listening but competent, but... meh.
Pop rock. Un megahit. Ni fu ni fa.
A lot of 3s recently - just a solid album with nothing too special going on
This album coming out in 1991 feels wrong somehow. It has a very classic sound. Not a bad thing, and quite nice to listen to. I do really enjoy "Four Seasons in One Day", I've always liked that one for some reason.
Pop rock. Un megahit. Ni fu ni fa.
Not for me. +1 for Weather With You
This album had some bangers. And I listened to it several times. I can't 4 star it for some reason but I did like parts of it a lot, and some parts really did sound like filler.
It’s lacks passion for me to bother to listen to another pop rock album while there is some interesting instruments and scintillating choir harmonies, I won’t listen again
I never actually heard about Crowded House before and I was surprised on how many plays they had on Spotify. So I went in blind and started listening to Woodface. My first impression is that it reminds me of Steely Dan with a sprinkle of R.E.M. It's a little bit of pop rock and soft rock. Further into the album that perception changed. It's got some psychedelia and differs quite a lot from the Steely Dan I've listened to. The album is from 1991 but could easily have been made in the mid 80's. So what do I think about Woodface? It's not my type of rock for sure but overall it's a solid album.
Ah, Crowded House, featuring Neil Finn, one of Australia's favourite not-so-sons. The amount of people that Aussies claim as their own (particularly New Zealanders) it's amazing there's anyone else left to claim! hahah But seriously Crowded House are probably one of the best bands with a New Zealand front-man. It's easy to see with their catchy relatively non-offensive lyrics, and undeniably alluring melodies. Best: Weather With You Worst: Whispers & Moans
3/5
Here’s a band desperately trying to be different. are they British? It feels like it when they say some very British boy name in the opening song. Tommy Knocker or something. Regardless, they get an extra star for the attempt at uniqueness since it worked on some tracks. And that wickerman/floory cover helped a bit too.
I know this band for "Don't Dream It's Over," one of those classic songs from Adventureland. It's not on here unfortunately, but the album's decent nonetheless. Some pretty good melodies, but it falls into that camp of pretty forgettable albums for me. I'm pleasantly surprised to see they are from New Zealand though. Favorite tracks: Fours Seasons in One Day, As Sure as I Am. Album art: It really is a wood face, no false advertisement here. I like this one a lot, cool art and art style. 3/5
Kind of found this a bit dull but not bad, just a bit vacant really.
this is a pretty good album, didn't really hear any dud songs. Good melodies, nice harmonies, beautiful playing and tastefully arranged. This would be called dream pop if it came out today and it sounds as good as Beach House and the like. 3.5 stars
Good mix of vocals and music... comfortable listening
Fine but always sounded a bit pedestrian
It was fine but wasn't very memorable.
As background music while cleaning the house I think it’s good. It’s got a 60s classic sound with the 90s grunge so it’s interesting
I enjoyed this. The album was too long, but the music was pretty good. Some songs sounded like "The Wiggles". Singing wasn't great, bringing it to a 3.
This was ok. Nothing outstanding.
1.) The album cover is a cosmic nightmare. 2.) Chocolate Cake drops a lot of names that were relevant in 1991 and have resurged in relevance in 2021/2022. 3.) The fadeout track I'm Still Here is like a coke fueled taunt song to the audio recording staff.
Hard to give this a three. A few classic the composition for a bunch of them is still great but I didn't find myself loving them
take the weather with you and there's not much left to bop to.
Very cool harmonies. The songs aren't necessarily there on this album. I don't think this is crowded houses best work.
Nice harmonies and melodies here and I think I can tell that some of my favorite artists were inspired by them, but I still felt myself a little bored by the end
Pleasant melodies by a band known for them, without being terribly exciting. Raised from a 2 to a 3 by the presence of some absolute dream tracks.
It's a nice album. I remember Tammy Faye losing her faith, which is a reference that I'm sure some people will never get. And that sums up this album... it doesn't carry time too well.
Musical trends of the 80s certainly evolved going into the 90s, and Crowded House might be the best example of this softer rock, almost but not quite pop, leaning heavier into melodies and having more of that studio band feel where professionalism seemed to be more on display rather than the persona of the band. A collective memory of Crowded House probably could not name a rock star affiliated with this band. The short of it, is that Crowded House played it safe. Opinions, controversial messaging were easily dismissed and any notoriety to be gained by that simply was not. "Fall At Your Feet" retained some of that 80s ballad sound, but where this really felt different was that the songs seemed to stand by themselves, as if the band actually may not have mattered in the big picture. The industry had found a standardized sound that a label or music group could simply reproduce with whoever was on their roster at the time. While Crowded House may have been at the front of this, they may very well be the reason for the recognizability of that feeling. The album is easy to listen to, and it has some 90s nostalgic moments that write that goodbye letter to the 80s. Crowded House's "Woodface" album has aged really well and should have its place in the 90s rotation, should one have that.
Man, does this album ever sound exactly like it was recorded in '91. The vocals are right up in your face and everything is mixed so dry it feels like it will crumble to dust at a glance. And, honestly, the songwriting DOES fall apart the minute you look into it. All the lyrics are locked in a specific date and time. A chorus about Tammy Baker right out of the gate? That doesn't make sense to anyone anymore. And there are too many words crammed into too few bars. Just too many words. It's just not a good aesthetic. Not a good aesthetic at all. That said, there's not really anything specifically WRONG with any of these songs. There's just nothing right either. Hence the "meh" 3-star review.
Some of their greatest songs are on this uneven record, but that might just mean that I'm a CH "hits" fan rather than a true fan
i thought this was a pretty album. some of the songs were a little slow and too spread out but i thought that it was soothing and a nice calming vibe.
Seems important in an unimportant way to mention right away: this album cover is literally one of the worst I've ever seen, not to mention kinda terrifying. .03 points docked. OK! To the music: on the one (cynical) hand, I've been wondering why such a seemingly simple or rather un-complex album can make a list of 1001 albums you must hear. On the other hand.... it's not a bad selection. It's kind of a joyous sounding album right from the start - the melodies are fantastic (e.g. "Fall At Your Feet") if not gorgeous, and even if the composition is a collection of mostly 4/4 songs in a very late-80s predictable vein ... it works well. I'd never put this near revolutionary but it's a really *nice* album. I'm familiar with other/older Crowded House songs and I'm not sure this ever made much of an impact in North America - if I'd grown up hearing a bunch of these pop songs I wonder if they'd currently have more of an impact on me. 3 stars which may seem a little unfair but it does really drag after a while and has - for me - a lack of real spine-tingling/chilling songs that keeps it down a hair. 6/10 3 stars.
It’s something I could have playing in the background while cleaning the house
ok
Not sure why this album is on the list and not the one with "Don't dream it's over, which is probably the greatest 80's song ever. I liked it though.
Solid
Lot of pop culture references in the first song. Interesting sound. Very easy to listen to. Will probably give this another listen in the future.
A solid sounding record, I enjoy their sound, but nothing really stands out for me. I'm not a big fan, but this has me curious enough to re-visit their earlier albums and re-listen to this one again.
okay
3 max
Better than I expected it to be and it made me realise they're the band behind Weather with You so I guess every day is a learning opportunity
Not really my kind of rock. Songs seem well produced but the style doesn't hit me. Have to listen again but not out of how much I enjoyed it.
Started out good and jammy, but as the album progressed I liked it less and less
Buen disco
middle of the road rock music.
3.6 - A lot gets said about hair metal bands being utterly decimated by Nirvana and the advent of grunge music. I think high energy adult contemporary bands of the 1980s, like Crowded House, that managed to hang on into the early 90s suffered from this "changing of the guard." Consider other similar bands: INXS, Tears For Fears, Simply Red, Simple Minds. Around 1990-1992, most/all of them were arguably past their hit-making primes but still releasing chart-worthy singles. "Woodface" feels distinctly like an album of that era, released just before the American grunge zeitgeist that would expunge these adult contemporary bands from my personal radar and make them culturally irrelevant. Sure, Crowded House went on to release other reasonably successful records but none would have any impact on me, an American teenager at the time. Now having that era in the rearview, it's easier to evaluate this relic on its own musical terms, and I actually like it. The songs are catchy and arranged really nicely. But as I'm listening, I'm reminded of that scene from "Titanic" in which the string ensemble plays in proud defiance as the ship sinks irretrievably into the black Atlantic.
This started off super strong with Chocolate Cake which I thought was a big tune. Front loaded with pop rock which I mostly enjoyed but kind of tuned out as it turned into the psychy/new wavey stuff in the 2nd half.
2022.01.19
Its a pleasant enough experience but it never wavers from its true path. It sets it stall out from Track 1 as to how this is going to be and sticks to it until the end. Theres no real filler here but it doesnt seek greatness either
pretty goooood
Is this a greatest hits album? Because it pretty much has all the crowded house songs I know on it! I have a soft spot for songs like It's Only Natural due to its appearance in FOTC but the album overall isn't very strong and severely tapers off from the middle.
I like the two biggest singles, I like the album name/art, and I like that Neil Finn was in Flight of the Conchords, so I was ready to enjoy this, but the album as a whole didn't do much for me. It's well-crafted soft rock but lacks a bit of edge. 2.5 / 3
I thought the album started off really strong (Chocolate Cake is a really good song I was previously unaware of) but I zoned out in the second half. 3 stars
Great start, have I really been missing out by not listening to this? I like it, and not only the big hit
Alright.
Based solely on the fact that all I knew of Crowded House going in to this was "Don't Dream It's Over" (hey now, heeeeeyyy nooowww) - I was pleasantly surprised. I like the vocals/harmonies - not sure what it is about it, but I dig it. They were also smart enough with the arrangement to throw a random "extra" instrument on each track to keep it interesting. I was like "oh, some strings" - "hmm, are those bongos?" - "cool, an accordion" - "cool piano" - stuff like that. "Chocolate Cake" and "Italian Plastic" were standouts. The rest was a little too melancholy for me.
Banger
vibin
Solid 3 for me , album drags a tad. Not really a big fan of the sound but its not bad. Fav Track - Four Seasons in One Day
This has a nice sound and a pretty relaxed vibe. I didn’t love it but it certainly wasn’t bad. I’d listen to it again and feel fine about it.
Odd, this had some good songs and some real shitty, four seasons in one day reminds me of school
Good, maybe their 2nd or 3rd best album.
Some great groove-driven tunes to open the album, but then it devolves into a whole lot of sameness. If you're not a CH fan, this may intrigue you, but maybe not enough to stick around. Existing CH fans doubtless loved it.
Pues cool, pero al mismo tiempo, ¿meh? 7/10.
It’s a fun jig. Kinda forgettable though…
Not bad. That one song was good.
very catchy and groovy opener, funny and clever lyrics second track also catchy but took the album in a different direction than the opener another love song, but very catchy - I–V–vi–IV really like the music, the lyrics are decent and hard to know if I heard these songs on the radio over the years or if he just has that type of voice ... nope there it is banger \"everywhere you go\" some non offensive but mostly forgettable songs here italian plastic is a good song good ringo-esque hidden track at the end \"3 - decent, could stick on again\"
For an album I thought I had to "get through", I really enjoyed listening to this. Reeks of early 90s in a good way. Few hits on the front end, followed by some nice songs. Got a wilco vibe off "4 seasons", r.e.m. vibe off some other songs. I was cooking dinner while listening to "Fame is" and I felt like Ted Danson in "3 men" montage. Played it twice. Lost me a bit after that with the absolute downer "all I ask", then "as sure as I am" with too much accordian for my liking.
Classic crowded house, Australian rock 6/10
This album felt pretty disappointing and not to mention creepy at times. I definitely don't think it's held up to the test of time because it feels incredibly average. There's nothing really notable or memorable. There are some songs that I may come back to, but it's not something I'd recommend to others. Highlights: 1, 2, 4, and 7.
There are some top tier pop songs on here - Four Seasons in One Day, It’s Only Natural, Fall at Your Feet, Weather With You - but, having listened a lot to this album (especially when younger), I now feel that a lot of tracks just don’t have the same impact. Was it the presence of Tim Finn that screwed up the creative process of the band? It’s definitely my least favourite of their albums.
Weather With You is such a classic. Aprt from that, the rest of the album was good but nothing notable for me. Real rating 3.5/5
'Chocolate Cake' was such a strong opener, loved that track. Enjoyed some of the other singles too, like 'Weather With You'. A pretty cohesive sound, 3.5/5.
Fine I guess, but nothing special. A few good songs with a lot of pretty meh ones.
oh la musique du menu de use your words (lalalalala) !! sinon c'est mignon, c'est sûr que ça change de Can. en vrai c'est plutôt cool, ça sent le 7 Après c'est un peu cucul, donc 6? J'ai pas noté de son qui ressort
The songs are easily their finest to date, combining flawless melodies and the outstanding harmonies of the Finn (Tim and Neil) brothers' perfectly matched voices.
Oh yeah it 's pretty good.
Weather With You eh maneira pra caralho. O resto eh meh
Quite boring apart from the hits
Kiwi pop/rock. I didn't realise I recognised as many melodies here as I did. Much better than I thought it would be. BT: It's Only Natural, Fall At Your Feet, Weather With You
Levyn biisejä kuullut varmasti enemmän muiden tulkintoina kuin originaaleina. Virkistävää kuunnella alkuperäistä.
Hated the first song. Won me over by Take the Weather. Been on repeat since. Looking for a signed vinyl collection if anyone knows of any. Looking forward to the Castlefield Bowl gig in July.
Ihan ok poppisrokkia. Weather with you:n kertsi oli tuttu, joten lienee Suomessakin radiossa soinut.
Jälleen peruskolmonen, ei suurta intoilua, ei suurta inhoa, ei suuria tunteita.
Ihan ok, tästä ei jäänyt oikein mitään erikoista mieleen, ei ärsyttänyt.
Woodface gave. Me a smiley face cause on the face of that album was a smiling woodface. It wAs not terrible it was not great it just was. Three I shall give this
Never heard this before. It was enjoyable, but hasn't quite hooked me yet.
couple of great singles and some boring shite.
Weather With You ist natürlich ein Hit. 2,5 Sterne.
Recuerdo este disco cuando salió a la venta. Curiosamente algunas de sus canciones se han vuelto clásicos de la radio fórmula: Fall at your Feet, Weather with You y Four Seasons in One Day principalmente.
Hi Sebi hope you're having a great day :3
Just some pleasant pop rock. No standout good or bad tracks. 6-7/10
If nothing else this project is acquainting me with the music of a lot of names/bands I've heard of but never listened to. This was really not to my taste though.
Weather With You is a definite highlight of the album. It's good but nothing spectacular.
Mi canción favorita fue "Italian Plastic", seguida de "It's Only Natural"
It was good just different
No nyt on aikuisrockia isolla A:lla. Normaalisti saan näppylöitä tällaisesta musiikista mutta täähän toimii ihan ok! Liekö keski-ikä iskemässä?
Pretty good 👍.
Enjoyed this album. Sounded like the real people mixed with the bluetones
super eclectic and mellow.
I felt like this album got better as it went along. It's not something that I will probably seek out in the future, but I would be super excited if this was playing in a grocery store while I was shopping 3/5
Pari todella kovaa biisiä ja muutenkin ihan kivasti soiva.
A few keepers in this one!
Pretty decent poppy new wave album. Not very original, but fun nonetheless. Closer to a 3.5
i like them and was surprised na Don't Dream it's over guys nga pala to
A few redeeming songs but overall a very boring album.
It’s a dead horse to beat, but some of these albums do not belong on any “mandatory” list. Nothing in my life is better for having listened to this album.
Like listening to an episode of Dawson’s Creek (derogatory)
Harmless but boring.
1001 mediocre British albums I didn't need to hear before I die. It's decent music, but just not that remarkable. The vocals and vocal harmonies were executed pretty well, although I didn't appreciate the bashing of America on the first song. "Weather with you" was one of the better songs for its sitar(?), other world instruments, and singable chorus. I also liked "As sure as I am" for the key change and African inspired chorus. I like Italian Plastic, too; I guess I'm enjoying the second half a bit more than the first. I'm trying my best to rate this objectively and not give it a 2 out of spite, but I also don't want to give it a 3 out of pity.. It's growing on me in the second half, but I'll go with a strong 2 to a light 3
Boring but easy consumption. Just wasn’t anything that drew me in and I don’t even remember finishing the album.
Don't remember anything about this a day later.
Completely underwhelming
My first impression was "meh" but as I listened more, I got annoyed and couldn't finish the album. It's just too lightweight and wimpy.
Groupe inconnu. Encore un album pop/rock plutôt mou et peu original. Rien qui donne envie d'y revenir ... En plus l'album est beaucoup trop long et finalement terriblement ennuyeux. Je l'ai laissé en musique de fond en faisant autre chose. =>2/5
A pretty little pop album without any sort of edge and lyrics with the depth of a high school poetry album. I get its appeal, but it makes me feel nothing.
So aggressively mid
Take the Weather with you is an OK song and Italian Plastic. As Sure As I Am is OK too. Much of the rest of this album didn't move me much. 2/5
Australiens svar på Mike and the Mechanics. Harmlös och intetsägande musik. Bäst lämpad för Radiosporten. Det är så uddlöst att det inte ens provocerar mig.
I’m a fan of the first Crowded House album and a few Split End songs but I’m not sure what happened here.
On JEOPARDY Q: Crowded House’s Woodface. A: What is a completely normal album?
Boring
This was painfully generic.
I've never heard of this band before... This album was fine. None of these tracks fully drew me in, and most of the moments I enjoyed were enjoyable because they reminded me of other artists I like. Not the worst thing I've listened to, but I wish Crowded House did a little more with their sound here. Favorites: It's Only Natural, Tall Trees, Italian Plastic
90s soft rock. Nothing about it is particularly bad, but not exactly the sound I'm drawn to. Fall At Your Feet is a lovely song but it sounds like The Police. The rest... well I've already forgotten as I'm writing this.
A very mediocre and disappointing album. The usual melodies that you expect from this band simply are not there.
It's alright, I guess.
crowded my ears and not in a good way
background music
It’s really too bad when the music is ok but you can just tell all the guys in the band are so annoying
Easy listening, had it on the background, remembered nothing.
Not my favorite Crowded House album but it does have one of my favorite songs "Fall At Your Feet". I love listening to that song and it is on my favorites list but the other songs don't have the same impact for me and are not necessarily anything I would listen to regularly. I love the band overall but this album just doesn't do it for me.
It was fine. It happened. It was an album.

Eh, DNF
nondescript and boring
4/10 - No song on this album I would go back and download. Disappointed considering I really like “Don’t Say it’s Over”.
A mid album in my opinion, don't know how this made the list. 4/10
Excellent dentist office waiting room music.
Cool album cover but kind of boring
It's okay.Nothing really extraordinary.
physics lesson kinda boring
enjoyed the few moments with CSNY harmonies some and its optimistic sentimentality feels quite quaint, but otherwise a fairly uncompelling and forgettable iteration of pop rock to my ears 2.5/5
extremely mid
1 3 6 Первая половина альбома мне понравилась, но чем дальше, тем хуже. В Whispers and Moans басист обезумел и начал раздавать нереального стиля, респект.
the harmonies remind me of those from pussycat dolls
Wow, I couldnt tell you one unique thing about this album. Impressive.
This was a tough listen at first but I was raised in the UK in the 90s so I did quickly settle in. This is a painfully hit and miss album but there are some low-key certified bangers (fall at your feet, weather with you). Despite this I’m not sure this is a must listen album, those are just a few alright songs. I won’t be doing a deep dive into their discography, put it that way.
So I'm really behind on this project right now, that's the consequence of a 60 hour work week where I'm unable to listen to any albums, and I'm very tired. This album really didn't help as it's insanely generic and boring imo. 3/10
Inconsequential
God, how boring
Ah, ’90s rock. I always give you flack for being the most boring era of rock music, and this album doesn’t change my mind. Man, is this dull. It’s so ’90s pop-rock, so radio-friendly, that it makes you nauseous. “Weather With You” is the main hit I recognized, but the guitar riff and bongos feel gimmicky and tacky. Yuck. It also sounds like it really wants to be The Beatles. “Four Seasons in One Day” especially feels like something they could’ve written. Throughout the album, I kept waiting to find a single genuine emotion that didn’t feel polished to death in the pursuit of commercial radio play, but I couldn’t find one.
So bland
Noisy, messy, steessful
It is pretty boring, their biggest songs are forgettable
I feel like every time I hear another mediocre artist consisting of British white men I deduct another star.
Not as memorable as their first album nor as edgy as it could’ve been for it’s time
This album was pretty cool. Sounds much later than 91, so I can see why it is there.
𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘦 is a well-crafted pop-rock album with polished songwriting and clean production. The band clearly knows how to write melodic, accessible songs, and the musicianship throughout is solid. Still, despite its quality, the record leaves little lasting impression on me. It feels like competent but fairly unremarkable rock from Down Under — pleasant enough while it’s playing, yet not particularly memorable once it’s over.
I started out liking this but disliked it more with each song I heard
Great music to tune out while you're shopping I guess. It's not even annoying enough to be a song you'd dread if you worked at the store.
I'll admit, I have peeked into the user-submitted list, and one thing that jumped out at me was the amount of locally famous artists on there. The several outside the angloshpere were expected and even welcome, as there is plenty of great music being made anywhere in the world, the more surprising ones were the amount of local Australian and Canadian picks. Crowded House are pretty much no different than any of those Aussie bands only famous in their homeland. They make pleasant, but unremarkable pop rock with a very faint alternative twist and don't really add anything to the overall rock music landscape of the time. However, they got lucky and score a few international hits, and thus made this list. Key tracks: Fall at Your Feet Weather With You
Very adult contemporary, very inoffensive. Some of the arrangements are interesting but this just never gets out of 2nd gear.
Weather With You I have always thought was a great track. But even that could not drag this album out of the mire of substandard mediocrity. The only question is, could it drag them up to the dizzying heights of a 3? No not quite. 2
Very middle of the road and radio2 friendly poo business. The singles are pleasant enough and very ear wormy, but the album as a whole is a bit beige
Listening through the fourteen tracks of "Woodface", one thing is certain: there is nothing inherently unpleasant here. The production is undeniably polished, well-balanced, crystal clear, and professionally executed. However, despite the technical finesse, the song writing left me feeling entirely nonplussed. The overall experience is simply too "pretty." It’s tame, bordering on bland, and lacks the edge required to truly thrill or excite. Rather than stirring the soul, the music sits there politely; it’s an album that doesn't overstay its welcome in terms of minutes, yet feels strangely overlong by the time you've reached the fourth track. Granted, the album boasts 'Weather with You,' a song so prevalent it’s hard to ignore. I never much cared for it back then, though I can now appreciate the quality of the guitar playing. Throughout, the band occasionally channel a Squeeze-like energy, but without the wry wit, charm, or memorable tunes of the latter. Ultimately, "Woodface" is a pleasant enough background listen, but it fails to leave a lasting impression. Two stars. 258/1001 140/258 albums reviewed were new to me
I didn’t really understand what stood out about this album. It wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t an experience for me
Before: I've heard of them. I think they may have had some hits on the radio. During: Chocolate Cake sounds pleasant enough but nothing special. I can already tell this is not going to be something I like a lot. Probably going to be 3. It's Only Natural is kind of annoying. Fall At Your Feet and Tall Trees are just bad. I guess I'm going to have to skip through most of this. After: I ended up skipping through all the rest of the tracks. It's gonna get a 2 from me.
This is one of the most bland and dull albums I have ever heard. 🥱
Started ok, got worse, ended up bored
Falls into the unfortunate category of bands I thought were rubbish when I was growing up. Can I re-assess them with wisdom and experience? I can accept that their songs are well-crafted, but they're too polished and middle-of-the-road for me to care. 5.0 Fav track: Four Seasons in One Day Least fav: It's Only Natural (still hate this for some reason)
I liked the first song, but thought it got boring pretty quickly :/
Pretty up and down. Boring/fun. But hey, "Everywhere You Go, Always Take the Weather with You..."
Not really my jam
nada de especial, mas não é ruim tbm não é bom xd
Nothing outwardly wrong with this album. Its an ode to late 60's and early 70's rock contemporary. I hear the Stones, The Beatles, Paul Simon, the Byrds, and so many other definitive influences. But boy oh boy does this wind up sounding alot like derivative pop contemporary. I almost thought this might have been a Rob Thomas side project at times. Oh boy how boring this ended up. In 1991 we had such better albums to listen to before you die and this one ended up on here? Odd choice.
It was fun in an alt-rock way for a while and then really starts to overstay it's welcome
Boring & bland
Never really got the point of these dudes.
It’s ok but didn’t stand out
interesting and chill vibe i just wont listen again...also my spotify now thinks im an old man
4/10
I was not familiar with this album, had only know some of their 80's stuff before. This album was completely different from what I have heard or expected. It is very bland easy listening 90's alternative pop. The whole thing just blends together and sounds the same, jangly pop which gets repetitive and boring by the end, it isn't bad just forgettable. Tall Trees is the only song I would really go back and give a relisten maybe Weather With You too.
Nothing really stood out here, and the one record that did was decent at best. Favourite Track(s): As Sure As I Am Least Favourite Track(s): Fame Is
Corny, cringe, generic, kjedelig, uinspirert happy go lucky slop verden kunne klart seg helt fint uten. Nei takk, ikke min greie i det hele tatt ass.
Jangle pop heter det visst. Helt mid. Bandet har en kjempebanger som ikke er på dette albumet.
album legal, mas nada de muito diferente. 5,5/10
I sit, staring into the middle distance. This album plays in the background. "Why?" I wonder. The album plays blandly on, nothing to stop it. 2/5
Damn. I really did not like this lol. My least favorite kind of music to come out of the 90s.
Nothing really caught my ear besides Weather With You. Had a Beatles sound to it a little bit. Overall a little bland
I was excited to hear more of Crowded House as I really got into "Don't Dream it's Over" again last year. 1 banger in "Weather With You" and really like their bass player. This album didn't do it for me though. They sounded like most the average music in the 90's. The 1991 release date means they're a bit earlier but still sounds average. I like it to be more psychedelic, heavy, indie or unique sounding. I'm sure it's a classic that's a lot of people's favorite but won't be going back too much.
Not my jam, definitely eclectic 90's
2.36
Album Chocho, musiquinhas legais mas nenhuma que eu ouviria novamente.
I would happily die if it meant never having to listen to music from Australia again :)
#807. There goes God in his sexy pants and his sausage dog. 2/5: the fuck even is this stupid bullshit?
So bland and inoffensive it barely registered
??? 1991? ah der Hit: "Take the weather with you" na dann. c
Bettrrr than Coldplay
Album didn’t age well at all, and is an awkward mix of being to corny and self serious at the same time.
Milquetoast : the album. All the tepid early 90s band condensed into one place 2*
Meh
The big tunes are untouchable. Bit middle of the road otherwise.
Estuvo dificil. Este pop rock canción me cuesta siempre. Lo siento todo muy poco original. 3/10
2/5
2/3
When you wake up with me, I'll be your glass of water? What kind of lyric is that? I don't know, I couldn't get into this one. Felt like mediocre dad rock to me. When you're dealt 1001, they can't all be winners, I suppose.
Boring
doo bee doo
I have no words for this album, because it made me feel nothing. I didn’t dislike or like any of the songs —just nothing.
Listed at #3 for Australia's Top Albums of All Times...? I might need to relisten because this album seems meh. The best part is the psychotic jack o'lantern album cover. Side note: Growing up, INXS 'Kick' was one of the best Australian albums ever. It's officially #11, but not even one of the 1,001 albums I need to listen to...and this is?? Would I listen to again? Nope.
Huh, seems like standard 90s music. Pleasant enough, but nothing attention-grabbing
Not my thing
I actually really like their debut album. This one is just okay.
Not a pop girlie
This is not it.
When I saw my next album was from Crowded House, I immediately thought, "Well, here come the synths and drum machines." Only, that’s not what came. What came instead was a really good pop album that wasn’t meant to be a Crowded House album. In fact, even during the heart of the 80s, Crowded House wasn’t a synth-heavy new wave band, I just painted with a broad stroke. During a break from Crowded House, Neil Finn, the band leader, began writing songs with his brother Tim Finn. The songs were to be used for an album from the Finn Brothers. However, when Crowded House got together to write a new album, their record label didn’t like what they came up with. Neil asked Tim if Crowded House could use the Finn Brothers’ songs. Tim said yes, but only if he joined the band. Or, something like that, it seems memories are a bit fuzzy on how Tim got in the band. It seems reasonable to want to be a part of a touring act that was pretty big at the time. So, Crowded House used the Finn Brothers’ songs and made a good album, which most of the world loved, but not so much the U.S. The album came out in 1991, and the U.S. was into hair metal and rap, and this album is neither of these genres. Also, Wood Face is not a very appealing title. Woodface isn’t an '80s-sounding album. It could've been put out today and be a great album. The songs are just good pop songs with hooks that will have you singing along. But the best thing about the songs is the harmonies of the Finn brothers. If you squint your ears really hard, you almost hear Lennon and McCartney on a few of the songs. The album went to #1 in Australia, #2 in New Zealand, #6 in the United Kingdom, but it only went to #82 in the U.S. It was a top 20 album in most other European countries. But, as we all know, you can’t be huge if you aren’t huge in the U.S. So Crowded House continued on as a huge band in Europe, but they were looked at as a one-hit wonder in the U.S. Wood Face is a fine album and has some great songs, but it didn’t blow me away. I doubt I’ll be listening to it again. But, if you like good, solid pop music with real instruments, this is an album you’ll dig.
Totally OK 80's/90's poppy rock.. Will never listen to this album again.
not to be hyperbolic, but this album brought a deep - perhaps immeasurable - sadness to my day because i was expecting the fine folks who did don't dream it's over to be like, good, or something. i wanted to be swept off my feet like i was listening to don't dream it's over for the first time again. i suppose, unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be .... 🥺 main word i feel with this album is "inoffensive," like, inoffensively decent, inoffensively bland. it was only at track 8 with there goes god that i felt SOMETHING. liked the orchestral touch on all i ask too, but besides those two tracks this was a big letdown !! highlights - there goes god, all i ask
Yes, okay, Weather With You is an absolute classic But I'm not hearing anything else on this collection that comes close, except maybe the Beatles-style Four Seasons song, making it a bit of a forgetable album
Some of it’s like yacht rock, but without as much soul. If this is one of the greatest Australian albums, maybe I don’t want to go there anymore. This is what the word mediocre was invented for.
It's ... nice. Unsure why this album is on this list. It's got a relaxed, instantly recognizable Aussie/Euro vibe distinct from US/UK pop music (and not knowing the band, I wasn't surprised at all to find they are Australian). Weather With You is lovely, and a genuinely great single, but the rest of the album is pretty forgettable. I see Australians find it to be in their top 5 of domestically produced albums so maybe that's why it finds itself in this list. Personally, if we need some Aussie representation, let's get Amyl And the Sniffers' debut on this list instead haha
Undistinguishable 90s alt rock.
I didn’t mind this album but it wasn’t something that resonated with me. I was never a follower of this group and only heard a hit or two (did they have more than that?). I wasnt interested in most of the tracks, though they were well produced and musically solid.
I never really got Eddie Vedder's fascination with Neil Finn and his bands. There's nothing really wrong with them, they just didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the music Vedder championed. Must have had good childhood memories of Split Enz or something. We all have bands like that... Anyway, this sounds about how I would expect a Crowded House album recorded in 1991 to sound. And it is absolutely NOT an album that anyone NEEDS to listen to. I liked "Four Seasons in One Day."
felt the wood on my face
Terminally 80s 90s. Not a lot of standouts but nice listening.
Meh. Pretty boring. Nothing grabbed my attention.
Man idk about this one. On one hand, its overly sachrine and sappy and none of the songs hook you. There is almost a nostalgic warm feeling and theyre so close to capturing something special but they never quite get there. The songs are flat the production is overly clean and ther lyricism is pretty poo. Whatever idk 1.5/5
It was just, meh, for me. Good musicianship
Meh. A middling album that is neither unpleasant or pleasant. It clearly doesn't really belong on this list. WOODFACE was not influential and does not exhibit some particularly accomplished bit of songwriting, musicianship, production, or genre creation that makes it a must listen for anyone. Increasingly I am perplexed by Dimery's choices. A ton of them seem to be for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of the album and instead for non-musical reasons. Consider that Robert Dimery doesn't include SEAL's debut album, (also from 1991 by the way), nor do he include Sting's TEN SUMMONER'S TALES from 1993, but he includes this instead?
I listened to about 90 seconds of each song and left really unimpressed. Nothing stands out as unique - mayyyybe the occasional vocal harmony keeps this stomach-able That said, none of these songs are terrible. I reserved 1 star ratings for truly horrible albums.
This is okay rock pop but I don't think it was essential I hear this before I die.
Pretty boring to my ears.
Nobody ever needs to hear Weather With You or Four Seasons again. CH appeared in the (UK) charts when so much more interesting stuff was going on - principally rave, that they appeared old-fashioned at the time. Sturdy, well-built but lacking anything to set the pulse racing. Perfectly listenable album, but feels a bit comfy slippers. 2.5 really but their ubiquity on radio is a round down for me.
I really liked "Italian Plastic," but other than that, this felt very average. It was listenable and not a drag to get through, for sure, but it also didn't stand out or provide much memorable material. A lot of this album, especially the first track, sounded like an imitation of "Smooth" by Carlos Santana feat. Rob Thomas. Just less memorable lyrically. I also got some Spin Doctors and Third Eye Blind vibes. Not bad, catchy enough, just not memorable lyrically, which I think is this album's downfall. Wish I could give this a 2.5 because I didn't like it enough to give a 3, but it wasn't as grating and didn't drag on as much as a lot of the other 2s. In the interest of keeping 3 stars at "I liked this project a decent amount," I'll give it a 2.
I've seen Crowded House in magazines forever but had never listened to any of their music. This was pretty good, lots of love songs, but not produced in any ground breaking way.
there's some weird progressive potential buried in that whole mess. but basically it's a happy version of Slint on valium and speed at the same time.
Always Take The Weather With You had to be the second most annoying lyric just behind Are We Human or Are We Dancer?
Very 90s soft rock. I wouldn’t be able to tell them apart from other bands. I did enjoy a couple songs. Favorite songs: Fall At Your Feet, As Sure As I Am
