Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Interesting double album. Fun history about why that is. Both albums have their bangers, but then they have quite a few songs where it's just there. You can feel the vibes, but not always straight through. Can't deny Hey Ya, Roses, or The Way You Move......but also that's a lot of filler. Stays solid 3, maybe 3.5.

3 Songs that are pretty good, but also a lot of shrapnel on here. Crazy that this is a 2h long record.

I enjoy most of it, but it's just too much music for it to be getting a higher score than three stars. Cut the album in half and you'll have a four star album, closing in on five. Overall I enjoy The Love Below more than Speakerboxxx and I generally enjoy the more experimental material over the more traditional hip hop material.

I have not listened to a lot of Outkast, until today. They are undeniably a very talented and influential duo and I enjoyed listening to this. However, they should have released this as 2 albums. For a single release it is too long and self-indulgent. A lot is good, but there is a lot that doesn't need to be here. There is probably a really great 45 minute album in here somewhere.

Little bit of a mixed bag, & a little long, but overall still enjoyable.

Man this was LONG, but they sure cover some ground stylistically. I think I prefer the first disc more overall - specifically The Way You Move and Rooster. On the second disc - that cover of My Favorite Things is pretty fun and the final track too. Hey Ya! and Roses on the second disc have just been played so so much - hard for me to appreciate those. Probably need a little more time with this one.

Forty tracks, really? This was like watching a very long full 15 rounds of boxing, where 95% of the time the fighters spent dancing around, hugging, and throwing empty punches. A couple (literally) of knock out punches were landed. Rounding up because they were heavy hitters. 2.5/5

Man, I wanted to like this more than I did. Solid but just too much here. Edit down to the best rather than putting errthing in there. IMO Stankonia is a better album so hopefully we see that show up.

Why doesn’t this shit let me rate by .5? Good album I liked it more than any of the other albums we listened to. That song with Kelis is legit a 10/10

long album jesus i loOoOve da way u mooove solid, back loaded

This is a LONG ASS album oh my!!! There are some certified BANGERS in this one, but idk the length of this was a lot. I like that it told a story at least?

Too long

I dont listen to rap albums much. Engaging project though. Enjoyed the second half more. - GhettoMusick - Unhappy - Church - Knowing - Flip Flop Rock - Love Hater - God (Interlude) - Happy Valentine’s Day - Spread - Roses - She’s Alive - Take Your Cool Off

Would be a 4 if it wasn’t 135 minutes long. Some bangers on here for sure

I can understand the appeal of this album. I did prefer The Love Below (second half) over Speakerboxxx. This really touches on a lot of genres and is more accessible than I would have expected. Honestly the length is probably the biggest drawback in my eyes, but nonetheless, I could see listening to this again.

Still not impressed

Coming back to this one due to length

A number of fantastic grooves on this album. Disc 1 was a better listen than disc 2. The album is way too long. 3 stars.

3 or 4 five star songs. Overall great double album. Maybe a touch too long 3.75

Before this album I only knew OutKast from their two hits. I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It’s a double album and it also feels like two different albums, probably why they chose two names. I liked “The Love Below” more. The interludes are funny but sometimes also distracting, overall a good album and one to revisit one day. Favourite songs: - The way you move - Spread - Hey Ya!

Well, turns out The Future didn't actually end up sounding like quite what we thought it'd sound like back in '02. But what we thought it'd sound like still occasionally sounds cool. Like with so many double LPs: there's certainly a fantastic 45 minutes of music in here somewhere. As it is though, this is just way. Too. Much. They threw literally everything AND the kitchen sink at this, and then decided to grab some lampshades and wear them as hats, if memory serves (but after 2+ hours of basically ADHD-turned-music, how could it possibly?).

Speakerbox 4 Love below 3

This is one of those albums I never owned but became really familiar with over time since it always seemed like someone nearby was playing it. Overall, it’s a cool album with an interesting concept, each MC takes their own disc in a unique direction, giving a taste of their individual styles. Unfortunately, like a lot of albums I’ve heard over the years, this one has lost some of its appeal just from being overplayed in the past.

I liked the songs "GhettoMusick" and "Hey Ya!"

Preferred speaker box to love below, obviously hey ya is a classic and roses is great and the album in general was very good but I expected love below to have more poppy tunes and to be more accessible. Still good but long run time to get through it all

Suffers from the same problem most double albums have, would have been far better with some serious editing 3.5*

Very innovative especially for a rap album from 2003. Pretty interesting at the start but it really really dragged on

some iconic songs but kinda mid

#528.Speakerboxx is a solid 4, but The Love Below is a weak 3. I guess that averages to 3.5, but I'm going to round down because fuck it. 3/5: half good

I like hip hop/ rap music this was welcomed. I also like Outkasts most popular songs, I didnt realise they had this many sounds or had these other sounds. I liked the album but something I probably wouldn't listen to again.

Long but enjoyable. Some legitimate hits.

Speakerboxx - 4/5, the Love Below 3/5

Roses smell like poo poo lol. Outcast bring a nice sexy tone to rap. With creative beats and lyrics about love, this album stands out to me. And there are some killer features in this album too. It's a bit long for my liking, but still a solid album.

i’m not a big hip hop listener but this was an interesting experience! i definitely like the love below more with the genre fusion stuff, but i definitely didn’t hate speakerboxxx either. this only counting as one album is kind of cheating though, especially since i just happened to get this on saturday in the evening after enabling weekend albums <.<

The beats are very 90s style, but overall too long. The beats get annoying after a while, but I get it was kind of new at the time. I listened to it pretty quietly so I did not pay attention to the lyrics. Only song I really knew was Hey-Ya lol I liked the second half much better.

This album could definitely use some editing down- it has a lot of hits and jams, but also a lot of filler songs and a few too many skits. The hits are definitely good, but some of the b sides really better capture Outkast's sound. Overall- decent album

Of course I knew Hey Ya! from this album, but not the rest. I know other projects that Andre did or contributed to, so I was expecting to prefer his part than Big Boi's one... And that was actually the contrary. The first part is really good, solid beats, solid flow, not boring one second. The Andre 3000 part is way more chill. Too chill, there are not so many songs that keep you awake in the midst of all this mellow, down tempo songs. Could have been way better, imho.

Lets get the first part out of the way. This is and should be two albums, and I spread the listening over a few days. It's too long to listen to in one sitting. That said, it was more enjoyable than I expected. I'm not a fan of Outkast for the most, but the Big Boi songs that leaned heavily into R&B were good, and I enjoyed the Andre 3000 songs more than I expected. Particularly the Jazz-heavier songs and the ones that were not heavily misogynist (which were too many).

Great concept with some solid bangers but didn't enjoy listening to it through the day very much

There’s some great songs in here, but this is WAY too long with way too many not-great songs.

Good listen.

Some interesting stuff her. But OMG way too loooooooooonnnnng.

The South got something to say - the 'Nevermind' of hip hop. Iconic.

Fond memories of this growing up, but it doesn't really do it for me anymore. Not sure exactly why. Too frenetic, maybe.

One of those albums that I don't enjoy that much (not my thing), but I can see the creativity and quality. It's much more than hip-hop, it's an album of two halves but both are quite quirky and very varied. Love the funky and jazzy (esp. on The Love Below) elements.

I played the hell out of these albums when they came out, so much hoping that Outkast would once again rise to the heights they had with Aquemini, and wanting to like them more than I did. I do like it for how much it highlights the differences in Big Boi's and Andre's production styles, but I think ultimately they are better as a duo. Speakerboxxx (3/5) is a little too maximalist to enjoyably listen to the whole thing in one sitting, so I tend to replay Love Below (3.5/5) more often. 3.25/5

So. Long.

Good album if it’s what you like

This album was too long and I think that if you want me to listen to a 2 hour long album it should be perfect. The good songs were great from this album but there were also a lot of duds.

Solid 3.5. loved the music, but I just can't get into calling women bitches.

Hella long

This is a 2 for one artistic special. I would give 4 stars but having 2 albums is just so long for one sitting. I liked having both Rap flavor and then artistic exploration with Andre 3000. I also wasn't expecting Andre’s portion to be a love centered album.

Enjoyed this.

i’m gonna be so honest that i didn’t listen to all of it but hope to at some point. it’s just such a long album and feels not particularly inspired like so much of their other stuff does

Basically two distinct albums. Speakerboxxx is consistently very good, but mostly didn't stand out to me to be honest. The Love Below isn't a hip hop album -- it's also probably got the record's highest highs and lowest lows. Overall, I'd say the album is like a 7/10... but Outkast has better.

Could have made one sweet album instead of two decent ones

Speakerboxxx was somewhat disappointing, but I enjoyed The Love Below. The mixes are better and it kept me more interested in the marathon of an album that this is.

TWO AND A QUARTER HOURS? I enjoyed Stankonia more than I thought I would but I thought it was overly long Liked the first few songs and perked up when I heard The Way You Move. As the album continued I enjoy myself but I got to thinking, a lot of albums deal with one or two major themes and have a line they stick to. This album feels very much like a big melting pot or mosaic of ideas, themes and styles. The interludes are fun and creative, but after a while this just became a bit full on for me. There are songs here I would return to without a doubt (it's got Hey Ya! and Roses for fuck's sake) but as an album it's a bit much. Probably great to put on at a party or hangout, but who is putting on a whole album at a party instead of a collaborative playlist/jam where the vibe is 'improved' by some really funny, original and tolerable person who puts on Ram Ranch? Also just to reiterate, this album is really fuckin long Highlights: The Way You Move, Bust, War, Tomb of the Boom, The Love Below, Love Hater, Hey Ya!, Roses, My Favorite Things

3 sterne

6/10 Too long. No shortage of ideas at least. Speakerboxx was easily the more interesting half, despite Hey Ya. Highlights: Hey Ya Roses Unhappy GhettoMusick Church

This is just too long. Definitely preferred The Love Below over Speakerboxxx. Favourites: The Rooster, Church, Reset // Love Hater, Spread, Prototype, Hey Ya!, Roses

It was good to give Speakerboxxx a shot. I always stuck with The Love Below but Speakerboxxx seems to be a solid Atlanta hip hop record and I liked it. The Love Below was, as ever, marvellous. Soulful and weird and also holding a few bangers. Too many tracks across the two though.

Vibed thru most of it, kinda lost me at some points tho(mostly speakerboxx), can tell they were experimenting which is cool but some of them were unfortunately misses. Definitely liked The Love Below more than Speakerboxxx, surprised to see more people prefer Speakerboxxx, but hey different strokes ig…🤷‍♀️ 3.5/5

The Good: Andres 3000! The Bad: a double album… The Ugly: still not sure if the triple x on Speakerboxxx has additional connotations that would ensure for a rated X album. Though I am one who does not like rap… this album was something worth my time. Big Boi surprises with his first couple of tracks, laying down some great sampling, and bringing us rap that excludes the usual references to dicks et al Andre 3000 is just the perfect party host to make you wanna have some fun! Though this is not a double album experience that I will be repeating with frequency, I had a good time listening to it and will, when I remember, repeat it at least one more time the next 12 months 3*

I like mellow music, soulful music and folk music and artist like the limiters and Damian rice and Michael Kiwanuka and Celeste

In flip flop rock, he mentioned Commander Picard. At the time the song was released, Picard was a captain. Otherwise, no notes. Also, these guys be horny as hell.

This would easily be a 5 star album if all the filler and half of Andre's experiments were cut. As it's presented, I can't go higher than a 3.

Some hits, but a bunch of chaff as well

hey ya is an instant classic but the rest is just ok 3/5

Thank God I got this on a Friday. A 2hrs 14min running time is long for a movie. I chopped it in two. There is undeniable brilliance on both sides. I personally liked The Love Below, despite its lurches towards novelty/comedy, more because rhythmic chattering over robot beats just isn't my thing. The problem - with both "albums" - is the lack of editing. Speakerboxxx falls off at Flip Flop Rock; The Love Below around Love in War. Honestly as impressed as I was by Andre 3000's imagination, I found myself praying that the album was over after each track from there to the end. There may be a five-star album among these 40 tracks, but no matter how great some of the material is, if you end up hoping it will end, it ain't a classic.

Speakerboxxx >>> The Love Below

Too long

I was in middle school when this album came out. Banger then. It just doesn’t hit the same now.

back in my day, this would have been considered a quadruple album. hell, the album itself is divided into two parts… “speakerboxxx” and “the love below”. each part is the length of what would be a traditional double album. it was a slog to get through, being over 130 minutes long. but enjoyable nonetheless the less. could do without the moments of misogyny though. it does seem that they missed an opportunity, though. when guns n’ roses put out use your illusion, they buy it out in two parts because each part was long enough to be a double album. outkast could have gone with this strategy and had way more album sales.

Listened to whole thing and kinda dug it. Needed to be edited down or split into an extra album or two but I guess their way worked well enough.

Started out pretty eh for me, but around when The Rooster came on I realized I was bopping to it without even thinking about it. Killer Mike's entry on Bust was a delight. However, but the time I had made it into disc 2 I was getting bored, redeemed to some degree by Hey Ya! both otherwise I was fully "done" with this before its substantial play length had finished and had to start skipping.

Love em. Hate em.

- Right, so it's a double album, the first made by Big Boi, and the second by Andre 3000 - I can't say it was the easiest album to listen to, because it was so long, I really needed 2 sessions to get through it, listening to each one - Speakerboxxx was a good hip-hop album, I really did enjoy the themes he was illustrating throughout the record, and the beats were pretty dope, though I wasn't as moved by the sampling, which for me has always been an issue with Outkast - The Love Below was slightly unexpected, it was more of a funk, soul, jazz album, and shows Andre 3000's artistry and daring to move outside of his comfort zone - Roses really smell like poo-oo-oo.

A bloated journey. There are some incredible moments in here but my god it's just so much to package together. Some of the most genre defying and iconic songs ever composed, sandwiched between musical waste. 3/5

This album is frustrating because it really highlights why these two people need each other. Can't help but feel that there is a good to Great single album stretched out over a double album

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would!

I found it fascinating that this double album from Outkast was initially conceptualized as a separate album for each part of the duo, before ultimately being reworked into a double album for the duo. Speakerboxxx is comprised mostly of Big Boi's material, where The Love Below is predominantly Andre 3000's work. They individually bring different things to the table and it's interesting and fun to hear those at play on separate ends of this double album. While I feel like the individual stylings of both Big Boi and Andre 3000 are able to shine on their respective parts of the double album, they and their production team also managed to find a way to marry all of the stylings together in order to create a cohesive Outkast double album experience. The balancing act that is struck between showing Outkast individually AND as a funky hip-hop duo is quite impressive. While I would say all of the genres blend pretty well in this double album, if I had to try to distinguish between the main sounds on each part, Speakerboxxx seems to lean more in the direction of hip-hop where The Love Below leans toward funk/jazz/soul. I liked this album okay, maybe not quite as much as I thought I would. But I definitely feel like its a worthy inclusion. Outkast redefined the musical spaces that they touched, and their work is excellent and provocative.

Love OutKast, but this isn’t their best

There's a really good album buried in here somewhere, as well as a really bad album. Best tracks are Hey Ya and Favorite Things.

Not really my genre of music but it had some pretty enjoyable songs. Or at least the songs did have whole sections I liked

I’ve heard Speakerboxxx/The Love Below before, but this listen gave me a new appreciation for it, especially Speakerboxxx. The songs are expertly crafted, and Big Boi’s performance is a masterclass in rhythm. His delivery is sharp, percussive, and almost instrument-like in its precision, blending seamlessly with the vibrant, groove-heavy production. The tracks on Speakerboxxx exude energy and confidence, making for a consistently engaging and fun listen. This is the kind of hip hop that really resonates with me—clever, dynamic, and endlessly enjoyable. The Love Below, however, feels more hit-and-miss. Andre 3000’s willingness to experiment is admirable, but it comes at the expense of the sharp lyricism and intricate rapping that made him a legend. It’s like watching Michael Jordan play baseball—while he’s undeniably talented, you can’t help but wish he’d stick to what he does best. That said, Andre is incredibly versatile, and when his experiments work, they shine. Tracks like Hey Ya are undeniable pop masterpieces that showcase his creativity and charisma. Ultimately, while I admire the ambition of The Love Below, it doesn’t connect with me as consistently as Speakerboxxx. Even so, I appreciate the boundary-pushing nature of the album as a whole. Standout Tracks: The Rooster / Hey Ya Score: 3/5

So similar to Houmous & Chutney’s double album, Houmous/Chutney. Equally as long. Equally as anxiety inducing but with some absolute bangers here and there. The most tracks from any of our albums that ended up on our best of. The Best of Houmous & Chutney. 3.1

There are some songs on this album (albums?) that I really, really enjoy. And then the rest of it I don't care much at all. The skits feel like a huge waste of time and take you out of the mood. Overall a 3, because the great songs are still great. Seriously, how is Hey Ya! so catchy still?

It was alright

My second time listening to this record. First was when I listened to the Rolling Stone 500. Form my memory I enjoyed it more the first go around. There is a lot of interesting stuff on there. I just didn’t connect with it this go around.

Has the potential to be a great album, with lots of variety and great tracks. However there's a ton of filler and unnecessary interludes, and, at well over two hours in length, the album is far too long to thoroughly enjoy. 3 stars.

Perushyvä ja aivan liian pitkä levy yhdeltä istumalta kuunteluun.

Keskiverron rapalbumi

On its surface and from a musical perspective, I found each track to be uniquely disjointed and not always in a good way. Some tracks switch tempos at awkward intervals while others play straight through swapping vocals. I found Speakerboxxx to be be much too long. Each song plays like a novel within itself and true appreciations of the deeper meanings within the album require multiple listens. I'm talking days, not hours. (Also, Rosario Dawson?) Based on the length of this album and the time it was released, I think this was perfect for the time it existed. These days, we're overwhelmed with information and choices, we're spread thin more individualized and opinionated and have short attention spans. Though there's some good stuff but there's nothing that makes me want to pay attention to it. For this album to exist today, it would need to slap me in the face and irritate me or someone I decided I don't like. It would have to take sides, make some egregious declaration and alienate someone. But mostly it would need to be much (much) shorter.

“Aquemini” should have been the second Outkast album on the list. That said, “The Way You Move” and “Hey Ya!” are hot yet approachable jams, and I understand why they are probably Outkast’s most famous and enduring songs. But there were 22 tracks between those 2! And another 12 after. This massive double album is fine as a concept, but just overkill in execution no matter how many interludes you have.

It’s overstuffed and definitely bloated, but the sheer creativity and ideas explored make it an interesting sound album

Speakerboxxx: 3/5. All around solid, not very exciting hip hop tracks, with two or three notable exceptions. But even the many prominent features can't really elevate the album. The Love Below: Definitely more experimental and artsy, leading to more surprises and standout tracks. In positive and negative. Though, the positives clearly outweigh the negatives. "Prototype" to "Good Day, Good Sir" is a joyride. The rest is somewhere in between okay, forgettable, and annoying. 3.5/5

Two solo albums as a double album. The second disc is the better one.

This is a tough one - I liked Speakerboxxx more, although there’s a lot of misogyny throughout it. The Love Below got better as it went along - but it was a bear to get through. Hard to see me going back to do a relisten to this entire double album again.

This album is incredibly long. That being said, I never really got tired of it. Even after almost 40 tracks. There were lots of great songs on here and just overall well produced and created.

Desperately needed some editing, would make a great single album

Preferred Speakerbox

Not for me… not at all.

If you have an album with 40 tracks, there’s something wrong with you. I don’t care if it’s two albums. Release them seperately 😭

Most of the deep cuts in Disc 1 were forgettable except for Reset and Last Call. The album only really starts to pick up (and become steamier) in Disc 2. I loved Love Hater and Love in War. Hey Ya is always a bop.

It’s ok, not a must listen in my opinion

Never saw the allure. I like it and all. But I dunno.

Another one I've heard before! This is an odd album, because it's basically two solo albums combined into a double album, with each member taking creative control of one half. It's not bad. I tend to prefer the Andre 3000 half, especially musically, but Big Boi has some good lyricism and beats on his end, too.

Good album with lots of different sounds. I see there's a strong jazz influence along with soul and r&b. Favorites were Unhappy and Reset. Probably didn't need to be a 2 disc album but good nonetheless.

Some good ones in there.

Truth be told, I've always preferred Speakerboxxx to The Love Below, which despite having the the hit singles and some truly great moments, is way too long, pretentious, and with plenty of mediocre filler. The world did not need to hear "Where Are My Panties?" or "She's Alive". If Aquemini or Stankonia is a 5, then Speakerboxxx is a 4 and Love Below a 3.

It's nice to have some rap/pop after all that rock, but I don't know if I ever gonna hear that again.

love some of the hits but this is no aqemini or stankonia or even ATLiens. good tho

Two solo albums in a OutKast trenchcoat masquerading (unsuccessfully) as a single cohesive mass. It's a very long album, but ultimately it's pretty good still Standouts Bowtie Hey Ya! Roses ?/5

A lot of good music here but just too much filler. They should have pruned some of these songs and skits to make it one solid Outkast album instead of two solo albums. I like The Love Below better than Speakerboxxx and I lean more towards Andre 3000 over Big Boi, but I think they compliment each other well. Outkast keeps Andre from going too flutey and Big Boi from going too Ludacrissy.

Way, way, way, way too long. They are not good enough to give themselves 2 hours. Some bangers but lucky to get a 3 on balance.

# Playlist Track - Hey Ya # Notes - There are some amazing moments in this! Examples: - The synths in "GhettoMusick" - The jazzy bass in "My Favorite Things" - The groovy guitars in "Happy Valentine's Day" - That being said, the album is way too long and those moments end up spread too thin. - Kinda cool, happy to pick some tracks for my playlists, but not coming back for the entire thing.

This is one of those albums I never owned but became really familiar with over time since it always seemed like someone nearby was playing it. Overall, it’s a cool album with an interesting concept—each MC takes their own disc in a unique direction, giving a taste of their individual styles. Unfortunately, like a lot of albums I’ve heard over the years, this one has lost some of its appeal just from being overplayed in the past.

It was okay. Super long though, but good beats. Odd lyrics

Some classics on here. Enjoyed listening to this album again.

Always felt a bit daunted by this album's length. A day isn't long enough to cracking that.

There actually is a more iconic hip hop duo than Big Boi and André 3000. It´s hip hop albums and being waaaaay too long.

I just don't understand double albums sometimes. Separately they're good, but it makes listening to it all at once a chore. The Love Below was the better of the two. 3/5

Don’t know if I’ve ever been completely on the Gram train, but this album is a solid one. Think it’s more that I’m not the biggest country fan, and still don’t quite get why he’s so important and constantly referenced in rock crit circles.

Previously rated: #131 - Stankonia (2/5) **************************** Album #565 These album(s) seem to be more mature than Stankonia, though they still have their moments (Roses smell like poo-poo??). I will say the production on this is excellent. Everything sounds really good. The rapping on the first disc isn't quite my style. It's fast without much inflection or character. The second disc is more funk/R&B, sounding more like Prince or Kool & the Gang, but still having hip-hop in it. Hey Ya! is the clear standout track to me, but I also liked what they did with Rogers & Hammerstein's My Favorite Things.

I've never understood why this was so big. I just don't get it. 3

I remember purchasing this when it came our and being blown away by the creativeness of a group releasing two albums in one. It was great to be reunited with it but I am not convinced it's an album that will go back into regular circulation.

Live below carries

Not Outkast's best album but still a fun, funky sexy time. For a double album the runtime flies past, barring the middle of the love below

Over 2 hours? Yikes. This shouldn't be a chore, really. There was a lot of good stuff on it, but I just felt like this could have been edited down to maybe 90 minutes: lose the interludes, the "Where Are My Panties?", maybe "Roses" (roses really smell like poo poo. Deep, man.) You can definitely feel the influence of other acts before them, especially Prince. So many different styles in each of the songs, which is always good. It's not hard to believe "Hey Ya!" came from this, but if people were expecting a whole album of that, they are in for a surprise. I hover between a 3 and a 4 for this album. It's just that for every 2 good songs, there is at least one song that... yikes. The fact that it was over 2 HOURS long probably turns it to a 3 for me. Top tracks: "The Way You Move," "Bust," "Flip Flop Rock," "Valentine's Day," "Prototype"

Way too long, but I decided to consider this as two separate albums, which is really what it is. Big Boi's Speakerboxxx is a funky groove but like a lot of rap the lyrics are definitely not for me. I'd probably give it a 4. Andre 3000's The Love Below was ok but didn't draw me in as much. I got pretty bored with it after a while. I'll give it a generous 3. So, 3.5 average, which I'm going to pull down to a 3 for just being too damn long. Favorite tracks: GhettoMusick, The Rooster, My Favorite Things (high point on the second album for me).

1e album geskipt The love below eerste 3 nummers is niks album begint goed te worden na happy valentines day 1e helft zeer sterk, tweede helft neemt de kwaliteit iets af

Both albums are a lot of fun. Low brow, but fun. Each individual album is too long, together they represent an awful lot of skits. Speakerboxx 3.5 / The Love Below 3

Man this one is a tough one to rate. "Speakerboxxx" is easily a 4 for me. Then "The Love Below" is hovering somewhere between a 2 and 3 for me. NGL that disappointed me. There are elements to the second album that I enjoy, thematically. But some of the delivery and backing sound I dislike. I guess that says something to me about which half of the duo I prefer. I guess the closest I can come to right would be a 3.

(7.6) ★★★½

I especially like The Love Below, but as a doubt album this is too much for me of a style I don't care that much for. 3.5 stars

Moments of greatness, but bloated and messy as is. I prefer the Speakerboxxx half. 3.5 stars.

Not very memorable. Got bored.

Has some obvious classics but largely not my style, fine for background listening

Both halves are good, but it's a lot to listen to.

2.5 rounded up soooo fucking long and for what reason. neither of these albums needed to be an hour long…. and while i get the reason it was packaged this way, i think it could’ve been interesting to see what it was like if they had actually tried combining these into a single album. idk. album too long my brain is melting highlights: ghettomusick, unhappy, the rooster, church, prototype, hey ya!, my favorite things (feb 25 2026)

a couple of bops and a lot of filler. standouts: Last Call, Hey Ya

Filler, lengthy, ambitious

Occasionally very puerile and stupid; occasionally very good, never boring despite its length.

Takes me back to high school

You prob know what your are getting into, its fine.

Ok, not sure how to rate this. It’s a good album but just not for me. Hey Ya rocks though. They sound great.

I got halfway through disc 1, it's okay and I'll go back and try to finish the album (I really hate long albums now).

Audacious and fun, but 20 years later I still don’t really understand why it’s a double album rather than two releases.

Quite fun and interesting 6/10

Middle of the road fare

Too bloody long mate!!!

This album is too long. I don't understand why it wasn't released as 2 albums since that's basically what it is. There are some major hits on here, but they are buried by a bunch of forgettable tracks.

Too fucking long, even though I admit it’s a double album. Good stuff. Sounds to me like 90s hip hop. Surprising that this is the origin of Hey Ya

This was so long. There were some very enjoyable tracks. I think I enjoyed Andre 3000's side a bit better. Especially odd tracks like an instrumental version of My Favorite Things. Perhaps I am a prude, but it was a little too sexually explicit for me to really love it. And to many interlude/skits.

Great album, too long for my preferences.

Again, this is not what I usually listen to and so this makes it hard to rate. However, some of the music definitely feels accessible. It is okay, but not great in my book.

Is it their best album? No. Is it a good album? eh. Are the hits good? Yes. It was different and a good way to try and keep the group together but let them do their own thing.

I prefer stankonia but this one is great too

The funky edge of both albums is seductively infecious. The growing contrast of OutKast's two stars is evident. Big Boi is motivated rap: contmeplating the ongoing cyles of violence after 911, asking the for meaning of life and praying for repentence. Andre 3000 is party pop: contemplating his lady spreading, asking where her panties have gone and thanking the Lord that she "got that thang". Three and a half shakes of a polaroid picture.

Look there's some really good stuff in this, but definitely not enough to fill 2 albums. This could have been a solid 4 with some heavy trimming. 2.5, rounded up to 3 because I'm feeling generous today

anything can happen in the bronxxxx

Lots of good music but would have benefited from being 2 albums instead of one… liked it a lot but docking for being unnecessarily long

I didn't get through both discs but it was pretty good

I get that it’s a double album, but I don’t get why it had to be 2 1-hour+ albums, instead of 2 45-minute albums. It just goes on too long. Great and not so great songs on both discs.

Some decent songs in it that I didn't expect to like but a lot of filler.

Okay so this is really TWO albums, apparently marketed together. I found the second disc to be much more interesting. Speakerboxx is fun, good beats but nothing particularly groundbreaking. Good party album. I am not a fan of the interludes. I really didn’t need to hear a toddler talk into the mic, sorry kid. The Love Below was musically and lyrically more creative, although as a woman I did cringe at some of it.

Actually not bad as background music. Not my thing but could listen to again

FAVTRAXS: GhettoMusick, Bowtie, The Way You Move, Bust, Flip Flop Rock, Reset // Love Hater, Spread, She Lives in My Lap, Hey Ya!, Roses, My Favorite Things, Take Off Your Cool LEASTFAV(S): Behold a Lady, She's Alive 3.5/5

El primer disco puag. Pero el segundo bastante bien. Tiene Hey ya!

y’all don’t wanna hear me you just wanna dance ‼️‼️ Speakerboxxx is ehh - too many damn interludes and sounds all the same The Love Below was really fun to listen to 🙏🙏 hey ya! Supremacy

love below daughter or speakerboxx son??? Love outkast sm and there were so many CERTIFIED BANGERS on this double album but the INTERLUDES PLEASE STOP!! Speakerboxx started solid but I fully lost the plot at the end but love below was very good throughout and actually felt like a collective album 😭😭 (sorry big boi) Anyways highlights were bowtie, ghettomusik and love hater also roses was a silly listen 🌹💩 Solid 3.5/5

Oh Andre my glorious king... to have your brain and your wit and your creative vision.... I will admit I will ride for this album (albums??) HARRRDDD because its just sooooooooo fun and silly I also think its insane that this album is not just AWFUL, considering Outkast was just falling apart by this time, I mean this is literally two solo albums with each of their distinctive styles glued together and promoted as one. The fact that their respective sides are consistent at ALL is astounding, but the chaos is definitely there and it damages the value of the album as a whole. If you treat this project as two separate albums you can totally see the value in both, but I felt myself growing bored of Speakerboxxx as I got further into it, though it started off VERY strong. I feel that the only way this works as one full project, is that once Speakerboxxx starts to fall flat and bore you, you're hit with the refreshing and eclectic side of The Love Below which I feel, is better as a whole and it's hard not to give it that when it has Hey Ya!, Prototype AND Roses on it. There are a considerable number of skips but for a double solo album with a 2 hour runtime, I didn't expect less. ALL of the singles off this album are spectacular, but its brought down overall with all the bullshit sandwiched between it and that the two sides do nottttt fit together well. Definitely not the best Outkast project, still super fun though. I guessed I would end up giving this album a 4/5 or even a 4.5/5 but listening to it all the way through at once definitely makes that an unrealistic rating. 3/5

Familiar songs, sing along

Not too knowledgable about 2000s hip hop. What I do know I'm not too fond of, but this starts off strong. Front half (Big-Boi) is a perfect combo of quality production that doesn't overshadow the rhymes and flow. Really like it all. Back half (André 3000) unfortunately fails to live up to the front. It was actually REALLY hard to sit through. Production is too busy. Vocals are too sing-songy and it's laced with far too much pop influence. Upon completion, I cannot even be diplomatic... it's fucking awful. Should've left this a Big-Boi solo album clocking in at half the time.

Objectively good but

6 / 10 Poco escuchado.

High quality hip hop but even at half the time it’s too long

So I find it particularly difficult to rate hip hop albums because they are so foreign to what I tend to listen to. Clearly I like some of it. I can also appreciate the artistry of it even if sometimes am uncomfortable with the lyrics. This album even has songs I recognize due to their popularity. 3.4

This is such an odd double album. A few good tracks, some bizarre, some skits. Not really my thing, but I enjoyed it for the most part.

The big hits are great. Loved the addition of R&B and jazz, just way way too long.

The last thing I was expecting from this hip hop album was hearing such a varied setlist which includes radio friendly hits such as The Way You Move, Flip Flop Rock, Hey Ya, and Roses. However throughout as you progress into the second half of the album Andre 3000 lets you take a peek into his new found love of eclectic indie vibe feels of R&B and Jazz with tracks such as Prototype, My Favorite Things, and Take Off Your Cool (feat Norah Jones). You can definitely see a switch flip on as a precursor to Andre's focus and personal projects with his flute 21 years later today. I enjoyed the trip.

Not my favourite Outkast album.

Lots to enjoy.

A bit long so I didn’t listen to all of it but I liked most of what I heard and enjoyed the sense of fun

I liked it! I drove in GTA5 while listening to this. Good soundtrack. Nothing extremely special tho.

good rainy music. feeling artistic in this loft rn

Not bad. Didn't realise it was a double solo album. I remember Hey Ya from the radio, but the rest was a bit of a slog to get through. Much prefer Andre 3000's album to Big Boi.

Wow what a journey! 2 hours is a hell of a long album but there are some bangers on here.

Two hours fifteen is a big commitment, and I don't think I was really rewarded for it. A few fun tracks on either half, some interesting cameos, all of which would have happily spanned 40 minutes. It's wild that this album has some of the most successful hits of the decade sandwiched in this chaotic oddessey of sound.

Didn’t love the album, but there is a reason why “Hey Ya” has 1.4 billion streams on Spotify alone.

Funny, stupid, wonderful songs about life from a perspective.

Speakerboxxx - 2 The Love Below - 4

Wow that’s a lot of music. I consider myself a fan of Outkast but I’m both overwhelmed and underwhelmed by this collection—and I do think collection is a more accurate word than album, because this is two solo albums mashed together without much cohesion between the two projects (aside from both being packed full with mostly unfunny skits). Both of them are solid but not especially memorable, and listening to them back to back doesn’t elevate either of them. I think it deserves a spot on the list because it received so many accolades at the time and it produced one of the biggest singles of the decade, but I don’t think it’s an ideal showcase of this duo’s talents. Best song: Hey Ya

I enjoyed speakerboxxx way more thsan TLB, but a double album is just too much bloat. the singles off these are eternally fantastic, I'll never tire of hearing Hey Ya, Roses or The Way You Move. Outkast produces some really cool and unique music trying all sorts of different sounds, My Favorite Things turns all weird and jazzy/trance, or Take off Your Cool with Norah Jones. The experimentation is awesome but the experimentation doesnt always hit the mark.

Listened to about half but not whole-heartedly.

Good listen, Im not usually into rap/hip hop, but some of the songs on these albums (The rooster, Ghettomusick, Spread, Draculas wedding) I really fw. Cool album overall 👍

I listened and can appreciate the commentary on social justice and occasional environmental themes but even Norah Jones and the ubiquitous hit "Hey Ya" do not sway me on this one.

Great parts. It is just. so. long.

Basically two solo albums. Weakest “OutKast” album in their catalog.

If it didn’t take me all day to finish the double album, maybe I’d be more pleased. There’s so much happening here that I’m unable to process currently, but it isn’t so odd you can’t find a track or two to enjoy while stumbling into another couple songs that are tougher to admire. I’m just saying, maybe breaking up would’ve been easier than 2hrs and 15mins.

two albums in one. overall good but doesn't captivate at the first listen.

Too long.

I don't think I know any album that would have reason to be a lot more than 1h long. It feels stretched.

Not bad.

Cool enough

The highs of this album are incredibly high, but it is also too bloated to really be next level great.

I liked the last OutKast album I listened to on here (Stankonia), even though I found it to be a bit long. Turns out, it wasn’t that long. I wasn’t sure about how this album would go, since it is (I believe) the longest one I’ve heard so far. But luckily, it didn’t feel like 2+ hours. I would have preferred if it had been two separate albums rather than two in one though. 7.5/10 Top 3: 1. Hey Ya! 2. Reset 3. Prototype

This album was very consistent, with highs and lows regularly. The big issue is after an hour and a half you feel the lows more than the highs. Favourite track: Dracula's Wedding.

Not their best work.

This album is alright, definitely not the best OutKast album, but alright. Just too long to listen to

Got the makings of one really amazing album here. First half was better.

I love OutKast but this is long for a double. It’s even long if you think of it as two separate solo albums, which it kind of is. Still some amazing tracks on here. I enjoyed it, but 2/3 of the way through u was ready to listen to something else

Lots going on, generally pretty good.

Mixed, a lot of it was really good, though the album was long. The two CDs were pretty different, for obvious reasons. I need a best of single CD i think.

Excelente sonido. Demasiado largo y agotador. No pude terminarlo.

Couple of decent songs but not my jam.

I love OutKast - bought this cd when it came out when I was in high school. I don’t like this album as much as aquemini or atliens, but still a good listen.

this is really two albums presented as one to collectively promote these solo acts under the outkast name. brill marketing move. Spkrbx: 2; TLB: 4; so 3 overall.

I'm not a hiphophead, and find myself gravitating more toward The Love Below & its more experimental approach than Speakerboxxx and its more straight ahead hip hop. Overall it's kind of a tedious listen, but it does have its moments.

hmmm 2 hrs of this? We'll see how long I last. There some decent songs on there. But I'm only giving it a 3. The whole second disk is a little funky .

Funny how different both guys are stylistically. I'm more into the weird/funky shit that Andre did on the second album. In the end, this was a bit too much OutKast, as much as I enjoy them

Too long

Mega mid

Good. Enjoying the entire album

It's not the genre music I usually enjoy listening to but this album was filled with nice lyrics and good music.

Wow, I never listened to this album because I’m not a huge hip hop listener, though I definitely appreciate it in small doses and I like several OutKast albums. As I’m typing this I realize that I sound like an old person, but I’m too lazy to reframe it and at 42, maybe I’m old anyway. I always assumed that I would prefer the Andre 3000 side of this album based on the Hey Ya single vs. The Way You Move (also a banger), based on the feel and prior OutKast output. Well, the Big Boi side (Disc 1) is getting the edge from me. I think the Andre side was trying to be more experimental, non-rapping, but it just falls flat overall to me. There are definite highlights and it actually gets better in the second half, but the Big Boi side feels more cohesive, honest, stronger, and just a better overall listen. Basically a solid 3/5. Can’t be a 2 and it can’t be a 4.

Takes me back 20 years. A few classics everyone knows but I'd never heard the whole album. Nice, but not going on any repeat lists for me.

Ehhhhh it's okay. Production-wise, there were some cool things happening. Just not my thing I guess. 3/5

Guessing I don’t have too many unique thoughts on this one. There is a lot that is really really good, and it’s cool to hear these guys sort of split up and doing their own thing, but with each other as backup. But it is tooooo long and doesn’t justify the length.

Lots of good variance between sounds. Love the jazz and gospel sounds you get from some of them. Great energy. Funny interludes

It does have Hey Ya

Wow, that is a lot of songs! Enjoyed what I was able to get through in a day.

Preferred Speakerboxxx to The Love Below.

Hey Ya, and Roses, are stunning, but the rest I could take or leave. And it just goes on and on and on.

Its too solo albums stitched together. That is is a well known fact. Too long with many skits i find that are too long on both sides.

I am only 26 albums into this project and this is the 4th hip-hop record that has come up. When I saw this one pop up. I read the Wikipedia entry and saw that this consists of 39 songs, I resigned myself to a long listening session, also seeing the warning label on the cover of the album I knew I was in for a bumpy ride. I must admit the album was not what I expected. There are songs here that take influence from all manner of genres and I have to admit there was a lot here to enjoy. Many songs get their roots from funk, jazz, soul, and some of the lyrics are just downright funny. There were a couple of songs on here that had a Frank Zappa vibe. There were also a few songs that I could barely muck through. If you cut out some of the weaker songs, this would have been a very solid album but with some of the lesser material, it makes it a bit of a marathon listen.

I have been an Outkast fan as long as I can remember. Somehow I’ve never listened to this entire album. While I’d probably put it towards my Least favorite kast album I still enjoyed it much more than my preconceived notion about it would have led me to believe. I prefer disc 1 as it was a little more Whst I want from an outlast album the second half challenged me to listen to Andre 3000 vision of sex in the future and I’m all the better for it as I listen from the comfort of 20 years in the future since it’s release. Overall a solid album that while I may not revisit as much as previous albums definitely worked a handful of new tracks into my outlast rotation and that is worth it

The Love Below start juist heel traag.

God damn this album is long. They should give you two days to listen and rate this one. That being said, this double album has some great songs (some of the greatest: Hey Ya, Roses The Way You Move), a lot of good songs, and a ton of filler. A lot of it is forgettable due to its length, but the gems will be in rotation basically forever. If this double album was condensed into one, it would rate higher for me.

This. Album. Is. LOOOOOONG. I cant deny there are some absolute belters of songs in this thing, but the length of this thing is just too much. I could only go back to some songs, never the whole album

First off, this needs to be treated as two separate albums. Even when doing this, each of the albums is still way too long! There are a lot of tracks that feel like filler, and the various skits should just have been left out completely. It feels like there are potentially two excellent albums in here, each of around 40 min in length. All that aside, there are some really fantastic tracks on both. The bits that I liked, I loved. Two different styles, both with really cool rhymes and flow, great music.

Long album. repetitive theme about girls and chicks. Some few good songs.

El primer disco puag. Pero el segundo bastante bien. Tiene Hey ya!

I'm here for Hey Ya, which is an all-timer. I'd be lying if I didn't admit I love the Prince vibes. Aside from the colossal hits, I need more time with it for a proper rating.

Hey Ya! is the best song on this double-feature by a mile and a half. It's so out of place, I don't even understand why it's included. Outside of that, this is a hefty collection of "fine" songs. The Love Below is a semi-interesting concept-like album that delves into some touchy subjects. Points for that, but it's less musically inclined overall. Speakerboxxx would be fun with some good speakers in a car, but the bass is about all that's carrying it. There's nothing particularly special about the bars or methodology here that makes it stand out. Not bad, but I expected more given the legacy of the artists. Fav tracks: Hey Ya!, The Rooster, War, Good Day, Good Sir (Interlude)

Kenn ich, finde ich ganz gut

I really enjoy the juxtaposition of the two styles between Andre 3000 and Big Boi.

It's long and essentially two full length solo albums. Big Boi's Speakerboxxx is dirty southern rap and Andre's The Love Below is more jazzy and soulful, spawning the mega hit "Hey Ya!". I have to say I liked The Love Below a lot more than Speakerboxxx but the later isn't without its merits. The duo tends to be stronger working together and the best songs on Big Boi's album feature Andre3000 but not exactly vice versa. Overall an interesting listen but at 2 hours and 15 minutes it's a commitment.

could have been one really good album

Too many F bombs

There is just so much going on in every song on this album, you get whiplash. Sometimes that works spectacularly - the switch from rap to soul in Way You Move, for instance - but sometimes it just feels like you're starting to enjoy something and then it pulls the rug from under your feet. One thing that is really noticeable on here though is the absolutely sublime production quality. The crispness of the brass peppered through the record is so nice. It's let down a little by too many nothing tracks, which (shock horror) could have been removed to make a more coherent, sub-two hour album. Fun though.

Not bad vibes Great production.

Interesting concept of having Big Boi and andre3000 create solo albums and release them together as Outkast. The albums really show the difference between both of their styles. Andre3000’s has the big hits, but is relatively strange besides those two songs. Big Boi’s is the more consistent of the two. Overall pretty good, I think they are better in other works. 3.5/5 Might listen again

40 Songs im Album.

Surprisingly good! Also lots of instruments, would listen to it again

Would probably be great if it was like half the length

About an hour too long. But not bad!

It's pretty varied, upbeat, funky, lots of layers and grooves. Well produced. But boy is it loooong. And the second half isn't as good as the first in my opinion. I appreciate this one way more than I like it.

Anything below 4 feels unfair but I will only revisit for tracks not the album(s). I'd say The Love Below is a 4 and Speakerboxxx is a 3. Rounding down since it's long

3, liked the first part and not the second

not my usual cup of tea, but trying to remain open to the experience

Nice to finally listen to an album I’ve owned, although I’ve always preferred their earlier albums, particularly Stankonia. It’s decent but not amazing, and in terms of hip hop, there are many better albums. Also the amount of interludes is ridiculous.

not my kind of music...

Långt album. Bra biisin. Jätte artsy

Listened Before? Yes In my previous review I cited Stankonia as arguably the third best of Outkast's repository. This one was not among the top two, and, while I understand its inclusion in this list, I will be disappointed if Aquemeni or ATLiens is not on here. This two-part album is daunting and dense as hell, weighing in at 135 minutes. To me it is sort of amazing this is even classified as "Outkast." Sure it has Andre and Big Boi in the same package, but they are almost completely divided and chasing their own creative whims. Big Boi sticks to the dirty south, straight rap, while Andre lathers himself up in butter and leans into his experimental R&B. --- Speakboxxx: Big Boi's contribution, this is mostly straight dirty south rap with plenty of field favorites playing feature (Killer Mike, Cee-Lo, Ludacris, Lil Jon). His beat selection is varied here extending to electro-soul (GhettoMusick, The Way You Move), brassy-funk (Bowtie, The Rooster), dirty south (Bust, Knowing, Tomb of the Boom, Last Call)... Honestly though, I feel like Jay-Z's contribution on Flip Flop Rock is so phoned in. This is a solid-enough album unto itself, but it suffers from poor editorial selection. It could be pruned back by about 5 tracks IMO. High points: The Way You Move, GhettoMusick, The Rooster (love the bird sample), Bust, Tomb of the Boom. --- The Love Below: Andre's contribution is a complete 180 from Speakerboxxx; quite clear why the two weren't going to work out. Andre leans into experimentation and puts his singing / production forward. Of the two this is the side that captivates me and was on constant replay during my senior year at UMD. High points: Happy Valentine's Day, She Lives in My Lap, Hey Ya!, Roses, Dracula's Wedding, A Life in the Day of Benjamin Andre --- If I were to review separately, Speakerboxx is like a 3 and The Love Below approaches a 5 for me. As a package, I'm glad they both exist, but I honestly don't love it as a singular unit. Averaging would put me at a 4, but as a whole this is more like a 3.5 leaning 3 for me. Added to Library? Yes

Man it's been awhile since I've listened to this. It's so daunting at 40 songs and 2 hr. 25 min. Not gonna write a whole review here. But the standouts to me are: The Way You Move Bust Hey Ya! Roses (My Dad would play this song every time he drove Katie and I over to my Mom's, but it was censored so it just said "crazy ______" a bunch. Now that I'm typing this out I wonder if he knew and was dedicating that to my Mom) Prototype (Tame Impala has covered this it's awesome) Behold a Lady The album has such great sounds and production. Speakerboxxx has some funky and hardcore songs with some excellent features in Killer Mike and Jigga. The Love Below has a little jazzy-funk thing going on. Definitely nice that the album(s) are genre bending. My Favorite Things was wild. Overall a great album, but insanely too long. Also sad that it pretty much was foreshadowing Outkast's break up with both albums pretty much being solo endeavors. Definitely an album that had the opportunity to be a 5 for me but really was just too long it was hard to pay attention throughout. Unless you’re Christopher Nolan don’t make a movie length album.

i like the second part more

More versatile than I expected

This was hard to rate since the two albums are really different, and I'd rate each differently I think. I preferred The Love Below, it was a bit more funky.

P funk influence is evident
