Reviews (page 10 of 13)
I listened to this when it came out and preferred their previous albums. I came in open minded to see if some time changed my opinion, but it didn’t. There are some high highs but I often found myself just waiting for the next good song.
I liked the disk two better than disk one
Fun, quirky bop of an album Soo long though Got a bit dull/repetitive Would have preferred to have less filler/unnecessary stuff 3/5 stars
Fun lyrics, easy to understand. Took old classics, like Sound of music and made them their own. God as a women, thus "ahwoman", not amen.
Ok haven't heard it in a long time but the double album a little too long
Good but too much to listen to here
Juuu sais olla lyhyempi! Mulla on tää alkuperäisenä vinyylinä, joka koostuu neljästä levystä. Tarpeetonta. Musiikillisesti oman aikansa tuote joka paikoitellen on toteutettu hienosti. 3/5
Erityisesti toisen puoliskon epätasaisuus estää tätä nousemasta kolmosesta. Paljon hyviä juttuja, mut ei tarpeeks 2h keston perustelemiseksi.
Accroche difficile
I didn’t finish this because I was at work and then out. Started listening to it on the bus home, at least 50 minutes. 19 minute walk, got home, fed the cat, got ready for bed, demolished a whole box of chocolates, caught up with the news, texted my daughter, fought falling asleep. And gave in. It was still going and I had to give in to tiredness. Why on earth did they not make 2 separate albums?
I’m freeeee oh my god I can’t do double albums they’re just way too long. This wasn’t bad or anything though
I've been meaning to come back to write this review for a while now, as this album is so long that I had to listen to it over several days and then it kinda slipped down the list. Like most double albums, it's a bit of mixed bag. I was surprised to find though that I preferred Big Boi's album - André's horny ramblings are a bit too cringe in places. Some great songs on here, but not the first Outkast album I would recommend to someone - ATLiens or Stankonia would probably be a better intro.
What an absolute beast of a record, god damn. Super interesting concept, but indulgent is a good way to put it. I don’t love OutKast enough to really sit with this. Either way, Big Bois Speakerboxxx is awesome, maintaining a fresh take on hip hop years later. Instrumentally interesting and listenable. Solid 4. The Love Below skirts the line of dogshit a little. Not listenable at all, so much of the album takes you out of it into a moment of clarity wondering what the fuck Andre 3000 is doing. Then he plays Hey Ya and all is well. So soft 3 with moments of beauty.
I enjoy Outkast, but this isn't my favorite album of theirs. Nice early low-fi beats to many of the tracks. The Way You Move is a really nice track, but honestly otherwise its two discs of forgettable music.
Experimental?
Let me preface this with 'hip hop or rap is noy my preferred genre of music. I wouldn't day I am a fan of this genre. But I do like many songs that fall somewhere in this world of music' OK. I kind of had high hopes with this record. As I do enjoy a lot of songs from Outkast. From my understanding this is pretty much a double album? One record of Andre 3000 and the other from Big Boi. Pretty cool idea for a duo rap group. The trouble with putting out a double record... Is.... That is a lot of music to release all at once. And I find that when artists do that, they're having trouble with trimming the fat, which leads to a too long of a record with a lot of songs that aren't good. And that is what I think happened here. Some things I really liked: - the production. There is a lot going on and you can tell a lot of creativity was out into crafting the beats, the samples, and the lyrics (for the most part) - the use of mixing and editing to simulate old hip hop record skipping. I'm assuming it was done in post production.. It doesn't sound like natural DJ work but that isn't a bad thing. - the humour throughout. I had to adjust my listening lenses to not write this album off. (this also lands in the dislike area) - the rapping is great and I think that's where this album shines. - the soulful singing really adds dynamic to the overall sound of this record. The dislikes: - the lyrics are whack.. Again, I had to listen to this in a different way in order to not discredit the writing. If I look at it as comedic, it's funny... But if it's written I a serious manner, it's shit. Straight up poo-poo-ooh. - the song with Rosario Dawson, She Lives In My Lap, which I was surprised to see, and equally as intrigued was God awful. Honestly, annoying. Very disappointed in that track. - The skits! I get hip hop has this thing where they think their records need skits. It's to the point of predictable. Are skits necessary? No. God no. But they can be good. But these skits aren't. I would prefer no skits (trim the fat) and have a solid album without the bullshit. Without hesitation, I would simply skip these tracks on a relisted. - the length. Yes, it's a double album, it's going to be long. But somewhere amongst the mass amount of songs is a solid record. - the final song sounds like Chank Smith - Chris D'elia's hip hop character. And the rapping flow is good... But the content is just cheesy. Andre 3000 is credited to be one of the best rappers. And when he is on fire, it's crazy good. But this album lacks a lot of his rapping ability. It leans to more soul and clean vocals with sustained notes. I sort of see why he became a floutist for his new solo record. I didn't hate this record.. But unfortunately zdue to me having my hopes up... I started it with a 5/5 for the first few songs and then I could see each star slowly fade to a low 3. A bit let down. But it's not terrible. Like I said there is a record in there that is great. Just remember... Be a Master of your own 'Bation.
Got the CD out! Never listened to it much. The Love Below a more enjoyable listen for me. But there's also a reason I've never listened to it much
Some great but it's too long and too many skits
It's definitely party music. It had it's moments.
Unexpectedly and surprisingly fun, albeit, a tad exhausting. It's also highly unlikely that I will ever listen to this album ever again.
Not bad, but overly long. These guys were trying way too hard to be different and do odd things.
Great album. Way too long though! Over 1.5 hours to get to Hey Ya! Whats that about!?
decent. Some great stuff mixed in and some boring stuff. Why are skits such a thing
Wasn’t as big fan of this one as I thought I’d be. Hiphops my no 1 go-to genre but something about the sound of the first 4 songs in the album made me have to take a break. Howeverrrrr when I came back the next day, I was loving the rooster and war… very classic 00s beat. Also really fucked with Dracula's wedding - gave me a good chuckle; definitely adding to the rotation

This was great, and much deeper than I expected. Total listening for the album was a little more than 7 hours, and it was fun.
Not a hip hop fan, but I liked this better than Stankonia. Bonus point for rhyming nasty hoes/pistachios.
fun, but it dragged on too long. there truly are some bangers but just as much filler tracks
Day 1 - very long, requires focus, so much variety, when paying attention so in depth but need more time to appreciate, will return. Also want to hear OutKast combined not separate, will explore discog
Would I listen to this album again? Unlikely. If anything just The Love Below Disc. Were there any songs I skipped? No Comments? This was a really long album! I found The Love Below songs better than Speakerboxxx. Favourite Songs? Hey Ya!
There are obviously some bangers in this and I discovered a couple of album tracks I'd not heard that were good, but it's just too damn long. There is an incredible single album about an hour long in here, it just needs some significant editing.
Quite a bit on here I like. 3/5
Speakerboxx: 2.5 The Love Below: 3.5
Mainstream hiphop, although better than woodwind
If I HAD to listen to a hip hop album, I works probably choose this one
Interesting
3.5
Liked some of it. Really didn't like a lot of it.
This album is hella long. It’s not really my style, but I can appreciate some of the songs and their sounds. I like Church. Of course, Hey Ya, is a classic. Makes me think of my whole first family and the neighbor kid Riley in Dothan riding away from a movie and all of us singing and dancing to the song in the van. :).
It's a small 3 for me. I only knew Hey ya from this album. There were some songs with a nice rythm and melody, but other songs were just not for me.
A bit long, and feels a bit dated for a modern hip hop enthusiast as me, but you cant deny the hits and the creativity of the album
WTF??? It’ got a nice funky vibe and actual melodies. Especially the second half of this double album contributes to this album getting a score from me that I never thought I would bestow on a hip-hop album. Well done!
This album is unlike any other Outkast album in that it's two solo albums collected into one, and I believe signified the end of Outkast as group. While each album "fine" it lacks the sparks that make Outkast great. There's definitely a loss felt on each side, by the absence of the other on many of the tracks. The tracks that standout the most is where we get the traditional Outkast vibe of both artists bringing their own flare. Unfortunately, there's just not enough there on either side for this to be anything other than mediocre. Stand Out Tracks - Speakerboxxx: Bowtie, The Way You Move, Flip Flop Rock, Stand Out Tracks - The Love Below: Happy Valentine's Day, Hey Ya, Roses
i guess this would be on the list of albums to listen to just for its uniqueness: essentially two solo albums combined as one album. the only songs i knew were I like the way you move and hey ya. i enjoyed both but probably the speakerboxx record a little more. Decent and a good example of where hip hop was in the 2000s.
Big Outkast fan but not sure I've ever given this a full listen. The Speakerboxxx side I really enjoyed. Big Boi picks some insane southern style beats for it, the features are fantastic, and it just feels huge. Flows by without you even realising. For Andre's side I was expecting it to be a big more experimental, since that seems to fit his nature, but unfortunately it's a bit of a let down. There's some interesting songs, and some big hits, but it really loses energy especially towards the end, and even moreso compared to the first side of the album. Speakerboxxx will get some replays, Love Below maybe not so much.
The Love Below ISNT a great album. It’s very uneven.
Album 222 of 1001 OutKast - Speakerboxxx / The Love Below Rating : 4 / 5 Favorite Track : I bought this CD back when it was released. Not sure why since it isn't a regular genre of mine. Have to assume it was the popularity of "Hey Ya". Nevertheless, something told me it would be a good buy and it was. As I listened this morning, I felt that I was more drawn to the Speakerboxxx portion than I was before. That doesn't take away from The Love Below, though. Still a good listen. A 2 hour long listen but I hardly noticed.
Hey y'all, stay together!
2.5. Speakerboxxx better half. More hip hop/rap centric. The Love Below had alot of "chill" music, not much I actively listened to
Didn’t blow me away, some decent songs but very long album. Okay to chill too but it won’t be a regular
Great songs, will have to listen again. Got bored as a whole project listen
As a huge fan of Outkast this is my least favorite album of theirs. I remember when it came out I was upset, like a lot of Outkast fans, that Andre wanted to sing instead of rap and I did not spend a lot of time with the album. Now listening to it much older, it is a lot better than I remembered but still my least favorite.
Holds up, still a great listen with some bangers in here.
Distracting
Really this is two albums, so I'll review both separately. Speakerboxx was pretty generic early 00's hip-hop I thought, despite all the plaudits it got. Grated in parts. 2* The Love Below was an exciting experimental hip-hop/blues/rnb mix. Lack of stand out tracks but numerous good ones scattered throughout. 3.5* to 4*. Would listen to this half again for sure.
Outside of my comfort zone, but very enjoyable. I liked the diversity and musicality of the entire album, though I think I favored the first part over the second (though not by much).
bra dubbelalbum
Enjoyed most of this album. Not sure that I've ever listened the entire way through before, but there were some big hits and some misses.
A few hit singles - Hey Ya! hasn't aged well. The way you move is the best track off this, but it's not that good. This is not the Atliens Outkast. By this album, they were more commercial. I'm not an expert, nor a huge fan, but I love Aquemini and this isn't that.
A lot to get through. Interesting sounds you don’t hear on any other rap. Some classics from high school years. Have to listen again.
There are some great tracks on here, and a very interesting dual nature, but it becomes too bloated with weaker sections for cover to cover listening.
Admittedly this style of record isn't one that's in my wheelhouse, but it seems like a solid effort, perhaps one that could be tighter with more selective track picks. This was difficult to really give a fair shake in 24hrs since it's so long. There seems to be a decent amount of variety and a lot of interesting features. It sounds like a playful and upbeat record, with a split personality.
Good but not my style
Aikansa genrensä tuotos… Rahaa löytyny muijain lisäksi mixaamiseen..
I don't listen to too much hip hop and this probably wasn't the best starting point to understanding it. There were some good beats and some funny moments. Also has its serious moments as well but I'm not that into it unfortunately.
Too long but had some bops
Hmmm. Some really great stuff. Just too long though! Chance to sit through 2+ hrs as a single experience ain't happening. Don't think I'd ever heard 'the love below' all the way through before. 3 & 4
nice funky hip hop, tho the entire album couldve had like one third of all the songs from the album
Not my style of music. Definitely easy to listen to. A few popular songs. Not paying attention to lyrics, but a lot of “E for Explicit Lyrics” warnings. Mid 3
Iha jees! Vähä liian lyhyt ehkä
Used to listen on bus rides to track meets. Honestly I think it’s kinda overrated
Surprisingly nice hiphop. I only knew 3 songs, but there are some other slower tracks as well, that I enjoyed. The interludes and other stuff is boring, one track (my fav things) is just garbage (intentionally). So, a solid 3 I guess.
My goodness this took me so many days to get through. Any album that I can't finish in one listen automatically gets below a 4. With that said, this album is pretty good. The concept of a duo releasing solo albums together is neat. The better one is definitly The Love Below. Andre 3000 might actually be a musical genius intersecting jazz, funk, and hip hop. I was truly blown away with many of his tracks, but I didn't care for his lyrical content. There was some anti-God and dirty humor, but I can respect the fact that he blends humor with serious tones and amazing music.
creative, aber seeeehr lang
An ambitious album to split off the different styles of Big Boi and Andre 3000. But I feel like it has too much filler. My favourite tracks tend to be on The Love Below though. I guess I prefer Andre’s spin on eclectic funky jazz stuff. He’s channeling Prince vibes
I like it better than most of the rap & hip hop on here, and Hey Ya is a bona fide classic. Still, don’t care for all the interludes and don’t see myself deeply connecting with it. And it’s so long.
Cool record. I wish rap was still like this. Or not. Very original.
Even though the album seems to be hip hop, there are some nice chill songs like the collab with Norah Jones. Giving it 3 cos Heeeyyy Yaaaaaa
A lot of the songs were good, but I was worn out by the end.
Goddamn boys, just release two solo albums instead. Or a 10/10 40 minute hip hop classic. Completely unforgiveable to release a 2+ hour record with 10 interludes/skits/intros etc… Last time I fought my way through this, I vastly preferred André 3000's effort, but this time around I actually found Big Boi's to be the most focused. Even though there are no clear lows, it will probably be another 10 years before I sit through the excrutiating experience of listening to this album yet again.
There really is no reason for this to be this long. It’s outrageous. It’s not even an OutKast album if we’re honest. It’s just two solo albums sold under one flag. But when that’s said and done, it’s surprising how few times I find myself actually bored during its run. Speakerboxxx is easily the best of the two album. Big Boi delivers some of his best work to date and the list of guests is insane. It becomes a bit too interlude-heavy toward the end, but it’s an easy 4/5 album. Just listen to “Flip Flop Rock”. André 3000’s The Love Below is not half as tight and focused as his musical partner’s effort. The singles are still great, the humor most often works and he knows how to put together unconventional beats and make it work. Unfortunately the highs are not enough to counter the lows. André 3000 really needs Big Boi to toil some of his weirder ideas. I probably won’t give The Love Below another listen for the next years. Speakerboxxx on the other hand….
It’s alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright, alright.
One long ass album...
4 for speakerboxxx, 2 for the love below. I wasn't expecting to like Big Boi's album so much more, but it was banging, funky, lots of highlights, not as esoteric as some Outkast albums but more energetic, and great lyrical flow. Andre's album...is coherent narratively, but often cynical, and musically kind of all over the place. It's ambitious, but the length is trying and I found a lot of the genre riffs hollow. I'll listen to it again some time, separate from speakerboxxx, but for now it didn't land with me.
the love below clears
Way too long to consider it one album. The first disc was more consistent than the 2nd.
3*
Fun!!
High density, two albums combine, two solo albums, 2 hours long ; but i know you have to condition yourself for such a time, or just for listening something, so maybe my context didn't help.
Déjà eu en LP
How do I review this, speakerboxxx is a 5, its really catchy the rapping is top notch, and any song with killer Mike can do no wrong. The love below, I just cannot get into this, u hated the intro, I think alot of Andre 3000 "jokes" fall flat and I don't think much of it is memorable. So that's a 2. It shouldn't be a double album either this makes it too long and I like artists that respect my time.
Essential listening. But man, it’s long.
Cat: this is sick AJ: they’re cool as hell.
This was good fun 20 years ago, how's it aged? Ok not incredibly. The overuse of 'panties' was a bit cringe back then and it's worse now, hey let's infantilise women and then go on and on about how much we want to fuck them, we're not creepy. That aside, the length. There's two decent albums hiding in here, but lads, one hour is too long for most records so the ' it's two albums ' excuse isn't cutting it all the way. Hire an editor, there's loads of forgettable tracks on Speakerboxxx alongside some great shit, and a lot of variety brought by guests. Enjoy the dude from RTJ here, didn't know that. Love Below, also fun, not a hip hop album at all really more a soul and rnb with a hip hop vibe. Heavily, HEAVILY, indebted to Prince. On like nearly every song. Spread is quite funny and musically interesting, Prototype is a decent soul number that gets ruined when Andre decides to smear shit all over it. Stank you smelly much. Generally good and immediate pop songs abound here though. Happy Valentines, Hey Ya, Roses (smell like poo ooh ooh - the guy is fucking obsessed with shite) The skits are nearly all heavily cringe. Pink & Blue through to She's Alive could be dropped. I don't think I really need to hear either of them ever again, though it was quite fun to let the whole thing play out over the course of about 6 sittings today.
Ambitious and some classic songs but not my jam. It’s been a while since I’ve listened to hip hop like this and some of it sounds unmusical. Also too many talking interlude tracks.
this was an interesting listen. parts of it were really cool and flowed well, but there's going to be filler on a double album that lasts for the length of a blockbuster movie (2h15m!). i only knew the way you move, hey ya, and I think roses before going into this. also, I was shocked at how many guest appearances there were on this album that became huge names later on. favorites: hey ya, flip flop rock
It’s alright.
Listened to Speakerboxxx and I liked it a lot. Not exactly ground-breaking, but I loved the flow, the beats, the variety, even the skits. I've never listened to an entire Outkast album before and had always seen them as being associated with a couple of tracks that I got sick of hearing in the early 2000s. This was far better than I had expected. Didn't enjoy the second album as much, it was kind of grating and brought down the rating from 5-stars to 3-stars.
Some great dancing music. Too long and could cut the interludes. Couldn't finish in one sitting. Too many tracks.
Same thing I initially thought, would have been much better condensed into 1 album.
This is probably the only OutKast album I’ve never listened to. It’s pretty much two albums. One Big Boy, and one Andre 3000. It’s good but it’s also 2.5 hours long. Halfway through the album it’s like you go from club music to baby making music, which was interesting for my work commute.
While I find it a somewhat dated sound, it's energetic and fun. My ears do get a bit bored with the relative sameness of the songs.
I think there are lots of songs and references on this album that have made it into my life without ever knowing where they're from. Nick Gall always used to say "feelin good feelin great", which is a line from a song on this album. Some fun funky tunes and some pretty impressive rap verses too. Not my usual wheelhouse but enjoying so far.
I like OutKast but not an album I’m that familiar apart from the obvious hit songs. Was unsure when I seen the length of this given I’m not a fan of double albums, but this is actually an interesting concept two debut solo albums released as a double album. It flows really well and most of the album is a hit, therefore deserves to be on the list, but still too long for me to this this anything above a 3.
It's pretty impressive when one of your worst albums is still this good. The separation of Big Boi & Andre 3000 does weaken some of the magic they have when they are together, but man, some of my favorite Outkast songs ever are on here. The Rooster might be the most underrated song they've ever put out. 3.5/5
Pretty good, with some absolute standouts ("Hey Ya!" as an obvious example) but quite long and the last part of The Love Below is just not good.
I liked it, but this could’ve been a single lp Got bored after awhile
Fun, but a lot of filler. I liked the concept of Andre and Big Boi doing their own style.
Some excellent parts but a lot of filler
NIce album but after a while it gets a bit same old same old
Very hard to rate as it's 2 complete albums and it's so so long. All in all I don't think it works as an album for me due to it's length but it does have many great moments
Man I love Outkast but this is looooonng. I managed to listen through its entirety after many false starts and the verdict is … it’s unnecessary self indulgent for the most part because the music is brilliant but the pacing is a slog. Speakerboxxx gets through alright but The Love Below has a lot of filler. Shame this has hints of masterpiece all over it but as a whole it’s tiresome.
Speakerboxxx is a rock solid hip hop album (a 4), The Love Below is an extremely inconsistent mess (a 2). No wonder they did their own separate things for this. Splitting the difference makes this a 3 I guess.
There are some excellent, iconic songs in here. Buuuuut there’s also a lot of middling to good so it sits in the middle.
Should have split this in two days.
Very much two separate albums. I preferred Andre 3000‘s “The Love Below” with its Parliament/Funkadelic/n*e*r*d/Prince vibe. Humourous and fun. Big Boi’s Speakerboxxx is a well produced hip hop album, not aggressive, but still proliferated with the n-word and bragging. Music is good and relatively varied.
I enjoyed this but it was way too long, I think a distilled version of this album would be a 4. Roses is one of my fav outkast songs
I really got OutKast fatigue by the end of this. I don’t know if I owned this CD or my cousin did but we def listened to it together a bunch. I dont remember it being this long. I can’t believe Hey Ya is like an hour and 20 mins in.
It's not bad, but way too much times I felt like it is just filling up space. Generally too long. Did not really enjoy it all the way, but it is not a bad album Hey Ya! is still a banger and it has some great feat performances, but as an album it just does not do it for me.
Ain’t nobody needs over two hours of Outkast. And I like them! But two hours fifteen minutes is too much. Also, kids swearing, not funny.
Great but too long
It's just so damn long. It's a pretty good listen from front to back though, Outkast are good. The Love Below half lost me a bit but finished strong. I'm more interested in their classic 90s records than this one, but not a bad listen, it's just kinda...bloated.
i thought stankonia was long - g o d d a m n - the love below is even longer, and thats just half the record. difference is stankonia is good from start to finish i think that there is such a creative superabundance and natural flow to their art that they were just more concerned with having a good time in the making of this record than seeing it as a serious testament to their artistic legacy. in other words, i dont think they really cared if the actual record was good or not, which here is the gift and the curse. its organic and brilliant and none of it moves me take away the obvious three classics from this record and i actually think Speakerboxxxx is the superior side. cut 70% of this album and it would be better
3,5
It was too long to really enjoy... Some absolute bangers but a lot of chaff
Ban double albums If both were released individually would probably be 3 for speakerboxxx and 4.5 for the love below. I think putting them together as a double is a weird decision
Both volumes are pretty quirky though the first volume is just too silly for my taste. Volume 2 is a lot better and I think the first volume is better left ignored.
Two solo efforts on two separate discs, this is certainly a unique album from the Outkast duo. The Speakerboxxx disc, which is Big Boi's solo effort, is a more traditional hip-hop album with hard-hitting beats and introspective lyrics. On the other hand, The Love Below, which is Andre 3000's solo effort, is a genre-bending, experimental album that incorporates elements of funk, soul, jazz, and even classical music. What makes Speakerboxxx/The Love Below such a remarkable album is how it showcases the contrasting styles of Big Boi and Andre 3000 while still managing to create a cohesive body of work. The album features several hit singles, including "Hey Ya!" and "The Way You Move," which dominated the airwaves upon its release. Enjoyable album but a bit too long and won’t feature regularly in my rotation, except for a few of the hits which I was bumping since before.
Not even so bad considering it's hip hop. But it's really embarrassingly long
It's good but not especially memorable.
It's a bit odd to release two solo albums as a double album by the collective, but it kinda works. I mean, it's too long (better listened to one at a time), and like almost every rap album we've had has pointless interludes that annoy me, but it's still really good. Probably higher highs on The Love Below, but Speakerboxxx is definitely the one I'd rather listen to start to finish. Andre 3000 grates on me after a while, comes across as a bit too smug and finding himself really funny, which works for a song or two, but not a whole album. Would probably be a 4 for Speakerboxxx, 3 for The Love Below if reviewed separately, but combining them drags them down to... yet another 3
The album was okay, this not usually a genre I listen to, but it has some good tracks; besides Hey Ya! I do like the infusion of 70s funk and rock mixed with hip-hop.
It's a much better listen than I expected but it suffers from running out of ideas and though there are some good songs, there is a lot of aimless meanderings too.
Hey ya and the rest of the love below is great I didn’t really like speakerboxx too much though. 3/5
Two sides of the same coin8 but in direct opposition (and conflict) to each other. I guess their poo-poo really does smell like roses!
I didn't have the time to listen to all 40 tracks but it was alright. Low 3*
Love OutKast but this project is pretty bloated. Roses is amazing and there’s some hidden gems but the skits/interludes dont add anything to this this thing
A great album. Or should I say albums? A really interesting set, with lots of big name guests. I didn't realise these were two solo albums - they do work well together and I am not sure I could choose between them. Although if Andre 3000 delivered Hey Ya! then I guess he wins? A classic pop song. Two hours is a long time to hold focus, but I enjoyed dipping in and out of this as the tracks played through, and no single track outstays its welcome.
Prototype and Hey ya! BANGERS 😎 Overall…. Very random but interesting to listen to. R&B throwback…I feel gangsta 🔫⛓ Heyyyyy yaaaaaaaaasaa🎺🎺 I think it’s too long tho🤷🏼♀️
These are two solo albums combined into one under the name "Outkast." As an Outkast fan, I don't think this is essential listen. What they are doing here was done much better on previous albums. Double albums are always hard to find essential and this one is no exception.
9/39, 23%
Pretty good soul/rap
Very long, but not so bad
Should really have been two separate albums. Speakerboxxx: 2 Fairly straightforward hip hop. Struggled to get through it, since it felt a bit samey after a while. The Love Below: 3.5 Kept my attention better due to its eclecticness. Was a bit too long though, and rather hit-and-miss.
Fun
3.5
It's a great album. Well produced, fantastic lyricism, enjoyable to listen to. But it's over 2 hours, and it's almost impossible for an album that long to not overstay it's welcome.
Cool album, maar duurt te lang
Very good, could’ve been broken into 2 separate albums but they still flowed together nicely
6,5/10
I'm not the biggest fan of hip hop or rap, but one cannot deny that there are some good tunes here. On the other hand, one cannot deny that there's also a lot of weak tunes...
OK. That was a long one. And I guess if you have to listen to one album before you die, it might take you a while to finally succumb. But my baby don't care.
The good bits are enjoyable but there is SO MUCH stuff on here it's hard to keep any attention focused. Way too many "interludes" as was the interminable fashion at the time. The Love Below is a bit more varied, Speakerboxxx is better average quality. Stick to the singles probably
insane highs,underwhelming mids
Decent album - Distinct sound, no real standout tracks, good representation of hip hop of the turn of the century. 3/5
Leuk album, lekkere beats!
Wow, what a waste of... No, OutKast is ambitious, and this album is obnoxiously long, but there's plenty to enjoy during the journey.
Really wanted to like it more, but it was just so all over the place, and not just that it was a double feature.
Not too bad. I think I need to relisten to this one in the car.
nice
Solid album, it's a long one but awesome that there are two such different but complimentary styles on the different discs. I'm a much bigger fan of the Andre 3000 side but both are pretty good. Standout Tracks: The Way You Move, Bust, War, Last Call, Happy Valentine's Day, Spread, Hey Ya!, Roses, Behold a Lady, Dracula's Wedding
Some great tracks but too much filler -album over 2 hours long
it's good, but it's a lot
There is a lot of cool stuff in here. But it's all burried because the record is just too long.
Fun album, but so long. Ofcourse this is actually 2 albums in 1, but still.
6/10
It's fine. Way too long though. There is only so much of Outkast I can stand...
This is a good album but it overstays its welcome. 3/5
The album that never ends. Would have been great to just split into two separate albums. Hey Yeah is a classic though. The rest is great, but just too much.
good
massa o som, mas meio longo demais o disco
I won't listen to it again, but I see why it's here. Not my music for the most part, but I did save Roses to my everyday playlist.
Fínt, en nenni varla 2 tímum í þetta.
This album was way, way too long. But it was really great, it's clear the influence it has had even today with artists like Thundercat.
This is great, but it suffers from being way too long, even for a double album. The Big Boi album dragged for me, but there are a few tracks I loved, especially "The Rooster" which is so P-Funk and so good. Andre 3000's record is the weirdest, catchiest, most interesting record I've listened to in a long time. It's also completely hilarious. "Hey Ya" is still one of the best pop songs of the last 30 years.
Beaucoup trop long comme album.
Not at all my cup of tea, but I managed to listen it. I'll give it 2 and a half stars.
It was ok. Not my genre but I can appreciate their talent.
Hey ya song. The rest is forgettable
08/21/2022 The great thing about outkast is that they transcend genre. Big Boi shines on his first half of the album, Andre’s second half frankly falls a bit flat. I personally thought a lot of the songs were pretty dumb, although there are a few favorite gems hidden in there. This album tends to drag a bit after a while, and isn’t fully cohesive. Nevertheless, still better than basically anything released today. — Although this was assigned to me yesterday, I’m writing this review on the 22nd. Today I start classes. Yesterday was rough, but today we will overcome and rise above. Anxious to see how each day progresses….
The Love Below finnst mér miklu betri en Speakerboxxx.
The Love Below est clairement supérieur à Speakerboxx
It's very long so it's hard to judge after only 1 day of listening having only heard the hits before. There are some really great moments on this album. I think it could do with a bit of editing and then perhaps it could be a 4. I will be re listening to this one.
This was a tough album to rate, as Speakerboxxx and The Love Below are basically two separate albums. I loved Speakerboxxx and will likely listen to it again. I thought The Love Below was super inconsistent track to track and difficult to get into.
Better than I was prepared for but still not for me
I wanted to like it more but found it pretty average, outside of a few hit tracks. It was very long since it's a double LP.
I've done quite a bit of heavy petting to The Love Below. During my gap year, I spent my days exploring my then-girlfriend's internal plumbing. She was rather a fan of the Andre 3000 half of this, and as such she often put it on to accompany our fumblings. She objected when I played the Happy Mondays for the same purpose, and from thence the relationship was doomed. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below originated with Andre 3000 developing a few tracks for a solo project, pursuing a kaleidoscopic vision leagues away from yer traditional southern hip-hop album. When he contacted Big Boi about his masterplan, Big Boi then started pursuing his vision of a southern hip-hop album. The result of all this independence was this product, two albums nestling together in the same CD case. And they're okay. Several songs from both albums will always please, but the cumulative effect is exhausting and exasperating, not ravishing. The first issue is, obviously, length. Speakerboxxx stands at nearly an hour, and The Love Below gluts out at 80 minutes. Both albums are pimpled with tedious skits (10 of the gits!) that don't go anywhere and fail to entertain. Speakerboxxx also suffers that similar hip-hop album curse of dipping in the middle due to elephantiasis. But if Speakerboxxx has elephantiasis, The Love Below has brachiosauriasis. Andre 3000 channels his inner Prince in composing this, and unfortunately includes all of Prince's faults, principally those of self-indulgence and a complete lack of quality control. Sometimes, the music is inspired, and Andre 3000 successfully fulfils that role of the fill-time dreamer (I've always liked Roses' proverb that "real guys go for real, down-to-Mars girls"). But for every Hey Ya! and Roses, there are four songs of directionless synthy funk that sound rather like Steely Dan, and that comparison isn't complimentary. And I must surely speak for the majority when I say that the incorporation of the melody to My Favourite Things in anything remotely reminiscent of hip-hop should warrant at least 18 months hard labour. Why does that keep happening? So, a work intended to be of epic scope and ambition ends up two passable-but-bloated albums with just not enough great songs. Big Boi is a playa in a game that's not that interesting, and Andre 3000's spiritual quest has left him aspiring to be a manic pixie dream boy. Why couldn't she like the Mondays?
I love Outkast but I would pick most any album of theirs over this. Which is not to say this is a bad album - but it is atypical for OutKast as effectively two solo albums released as a double. You rarely get Big Boi and Andre 3000 on the same track and certainly not pairing their lyrical flow across verses. And whilst it is great to hear them let loose individually, there is definitely a sense of quantity over quality which could easily have been solved by a selection of the best from each side. There is a LOT of meandering, aimless sketches, repetitive grooves, peculiar subjects and a lack of focus. Dre sings more than raps - nobody wants to miss out on his great flow! And it pains me to say it. Let’s look at the pluses - there’s a reason Roses, The Way You Move and the globe conquering Hey Ya! (still makes you want to get up and move even on the morning commute) were successful singles - they picked the highlights! They could have done the same for the whole album.
Couple great songs. Otherwise listening to a double album can get long.
Well, this album complies with many or maybe all of the tricks to get into this list: huge hits, it has an unusual and experimental format, and was issued by a respected artist. It is the true sum of its parts, if it was published as two separated albums I don’t imagine it would have made it, maybe the love bellow… if it was a single effort with the let’s say, 12 best tracks it would not be here either. The first half is a good effort but its a generic 00’s hip hop album. The second half is quite experimental and has some great moments (as does the first half), and it brings some good memories from back in the day. I think it’s a 3/5
It was ik
This album is unique and enjoyable hip-hop, but the length of the project is not justified, as there are a lot of half-baked songs that are a bit mind-numbing to listen to.
Didn’t finish - too goddam long. However, I loved the production on it, the flows were great, and it was a ton of fun. Big fan of the killer mike features. There weren’t any major standout songs and I don’t think I’d constantly bump this though.
Way too long. I definitely preferred speakerboxxx, and would have rated that a 4 on its own. The love below had a couple great songs but was too long with too many interludes
Although long, it was a great soundtrack to work to today. Knew the hits of course, but never listened to the whole album. Generally pretty good - I enjoyed the variety
Hats off to Outkast for attempting this length of album. They have always pushed the boundaries of what hip-hop can be and this is no different. Whether the boundary pushing two separate albums as one thing came about because of "artistic differences" who really knows but as with most double albums, if the fat was stripped off this and it was condensed to a single album, there is a really great record here. And as with most successful duos, it is clear from this experiment that they are better together and much more than the sum of their parts. Speakerboxxx is a solid hip-hop album containing a handful of bangers that doesn't quite hit the heights of previous Outkast efforts. Frankly, what it is missing to elevate it is some Andre 3000 gold dust. On The Love Below Andre 3000 drops rapping almost entirely in favour of space aged funk. Prince is a very obvious influence but the album falls well short of that type of greatness. Here again, the missing ingredient seems to be the absent partner. I can't help feeling that Big Boi's hip-hop grounding would have prevented a lot of these tracks disappearing into nothingness. Experimental nothingness, but nothingness nonetheless.
Wow, that is a heck of a lot of music. Two hours, 39 tracks...okay, took a while. What a variety of sounds and styles. Impressive. I tend to like the tracks from the The Love Below a little better. Overall, though, there is a tremendous amount of range in this double album and a lot of it is quite good.
More mashup than hip hop. And that is a good thing. I could honest see myself hanging with these guys, talking music.
El primer disco puag. Pero el segundo bastante bien. Tiene Hey ya!
Sprawl. Good sprawl though.
Wow there's some exemplary hooks, interludes, beats, melodies, rap, and sounds all what we expect from OutKast on this record. There's bangers like The Way You Move on there. HOWEVER, this is just way too long. I don't really think any album needs to be this long and no album has ever really made me change my mind on that before. For this reason, I much prefer Stankonia as an album and I can't even put this in my 4 star box. Such a shame.
Preferred the love below tracks.
So long, so very long...but I enjoyed it more than Stankonia. But so long.
Good, but WAAAAAAYYYYYYY too long. Come on, guys. Enough already. 3/5
Long but enjoyable
Hey Ya slaps. Big boi is somehow still overrated despite not really being rated
It's way too long and all over the place and doesn't live up to its predecessors, but also there is so much great stuff within it that it's still an enjoyable project (though it's crazy that Aquemini didn't make it onto the list)
This was interesting (and long) but I didn't love it. Just not my style. I liked The Love Below better than Speakerboxxx - just a bit more musical and less rap-oriented. 3 stars for the effort.
honestly this was a strange album because it was all over the place but i liked it? i knew a couple songs and i thought it was pretty groovy.
3/5
Way to long for my tastes- got some bangers in there for sure. Second half is WAY better imo.
classic
Several 5* songs - incl Hey Ya, one of the best ever - but too scattered and way too long overall.
Not bad, but not their best
This is Outkast at their most experimental, and nearing the end of their time as a group. Overall this was a fun one for me to revisit.
À l’époque je préférais The Love Below.
So long
A lot to listen to
Long album and I did not have time today to give it a full listen. Hey Ya is a great song though and while hip hop is not a genre of mine, I bounced around the double album to get a flavor of it. 3
You don’t always have to understand art to appreciate and even enjoy it: Stanley Kubrick’s '2001: A Space Odyssey,' or Jackson Pollock’s abstract ‘drip’ paintings. Or, 'The Love Below,' the second half of OutKast’s double LP. (More accurately, this is not so much a double album as it is two separate LPs.) Other than the general theme of love/sex, I couldn’t make much sense out of Andre 3000s lyrics. Nor did I understand the inclusion of so many other things besides rap, like the seemingly random snippets of conversations (‘God [Interlude]’ or ‘Where Are My Panties.’) He actually ends the LP with an unfinished rambling stream of consciousness number including the statement, ‘and that’s as far as I got.’ And I’m not even going to ask what a ‘macaroni’ n-word is. On ‘Love Hater,’ he sings that ‘everyone needs someone to love,’ but then in the chorus, ‘Love hater, hater of love.’ So, which is it? And is Andre the love hater, or someone else? Hmmm… Again, while much of Andre’s lyrics were lost on me, I very much enjoyed the general sound he creates in the background- trip hop. Spacey, cool, and very danceable. Yeah, I dug it as much as a 62 year old middle class white guy living in a suburb of Denver can. I was already familiar with the LP’s big hit, ‘Hey Ya,’ and it’s a hit for a reason, one of the best offerings of the bunch. (The video is pretty clever, too.) I’m also a fan of John Coltrane’s free jazz so I really enjoyed the sampling of his astounding tenor sax version of ‘My Favorite Things’ with an equally fantastic piano solo, all set against a superfast synthesized beat. Now, Big Boi’s (the other member of the OutKast duo) side one, 'Speakerboxxx' (triple x rated, get it?), that’s a whole other matter. I did understand much of what Big Boi was rapping about, unfortunately: sex (with no mention of love), violence, substance abuse, prison. Big Boi highlights some of the issues concerning 21st century black Americans, but never offers any helpful solutions. More unfortunately, he sometimes glorifies the sex and violence. On the positive side, though, his side also contained some lovely harmonies (‘The Way You Move’) ala the mighty 1970s R&B band, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and a generous amount of tremendously vicious beats. Every bit as danceable as Andre’s side, albeit with a much darker edge. In addition to the massive amount of lyrical content and sampling throughout, this double LP is also loaded with guest artists (too many to name, but the R&B diva Patti LaBelle is the first to appear) that pop in and out like the little creatures in the whack a mole game. Be sure you have plenty of time to listen to this recording. You might even want to make a sandwich or two to have on hand. Take the dog out first. A catheter might be helpful. I have a friend who is a priest in the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition who gave me some advice concerning the massive amount of words chanted during the Divine Liturgy. ‘It’s too much to comprehend,’ I complained. ‘Too many words coming too fast for too long a time!’ His advice? ‘Just let all those words wash over you, and listen with your heart rather than your mind. The service is not about comprehension as much as experience, a foretaste, of heavenly glory.’ Maybe that’s good advice for listening to 'Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,' as well, on its own different terms. And that’s as far as I got.
Hip hop is generally not my favorite genre. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would but not enough to buy it.
Some 4- and 5-star tracks for sure, but A LOT of filler.
Not bad not bad...
honestly I'd never expect that I will rate this album so low, I knew some of the songs and classics like Hey ya or Roses are pure masterpieces, but damn, 40 songs, it killed me. None album should be this long, I mean I know that we got 2 discs here, but it's still too much. Still 3,5 tho, unique vibe and hip hop legacy, Andre is a genius
Ups and downs throughout. Lyrically its a bit hit and miss - the singles are all pretty good, as are the few songs which give the artists room to show vulnerability. When it's about a desired or despised woman though, the lyrics can get pretty lowbrow - and in an uncomfortable way, not a fun way. When its good though, it gets almost wholesome, which is not a word I expected to be applying. Musically its much more consistent, solid beats and catchy tunes almost all the way through, which is saying something for a ~2 hour long double album. Very impressive also how the two halves feel distinct, but cohesive - no doubt a much harder balance to strike than they make it look. This still isn't really my kind of music but I can't deny that its very well put together.
40 songs, 2 hours... this album is a commitment.
OutKast's double-album is ambitious project that ultimately suffers from it's length. There are some certified classics on here, though. They are so good that they outshine the other songs on the album. If I had it my way, I'd cut out the filler from both albums and combine them into one.
Shorter list if was who didn't play on this/these albums. Watch "Be Cool", Andre 3000 is great along w other stars. I like that it has good singing.
Such a long and huge double album. I've always been more into Andre 3000, and The Love Below is definitely the better half of this in my opinion. The singles are obviously great, and the deeper cuts on Love Below still got me good, but I'm just not as big a fan of Speakerboxxx. Southern Hip Hop just isn't my jam. This would be a 4.5 for me if you cut it down to one album. Best tracks from both. But it's just a 3.
I've always had a complicated relationship with hip-hop. Like most middle-class suburban kids, my introduction to hip-hop was in the form of Eminem (I am currently sitting down as I am not the real Slim Shady), and soon after, Outkast. This was would later be followed by the proliferation of the clubby, flashy gangsta rap that put me off hip-hop for a long while. Without delving too much into my on-again-off-again thing (thang?) with the genre, I am just going to come right out and say that Stankonia was Outkast's best work. Unlike Speakerboxx/The Love Below, Stankonia saw the duo at their peak, greater than the sum of their parts. In retrospect, Speakerboxx/The Love Below was a foreshadowing of the pair's eventual break up, primarily due to creative differences. If anything, this double album would be prime evidence of their contrasting ways. Speakerboxx, the half by Big Boi (the guy on the left) started strong, but the vibrant, cacophonous funk, broken by excessive interludes, made this feel tiresome quickly. While it did still feature a fair amount of rap, with appearances by Killer Mike and Ceelo Green amongst others, I could not help but feel that Speakerboxx lacked the urgency and mania that made Outkast so damn catchy. The Love Below, the second hour(?!) by Andre "3000" Benjamin, did little to cut through the bloatedness of the first half. While there were some really cool tracks and unlikely features, and a conceptual narrative to boot, The Love Below felt less like an album and a little more like a soundtrack to a love affair that starts, blooms, flounders and dies. As a standalone work, one could wonder if The Love Below might actually be worth a listen (this writer says "yes"), but after the first hour that was Speakerboxx, ones' aural tummy cannot help but feel numb and force-fed. Overall, I did enjoy Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, but not without having to drag myself through it at some points, and wondering aloud if the album would have worked better as an hour outing, sans the some of the interludes. I'm sorry Ms Jackson. I am for real.
A few really great songs on here, but most of it doesn't appeal to me.
Overly long double album with filler and minimal killer
Way way to long
Good God. No album should be that long. 'Hey ya!' and 'My favourite things' are pretty great tho.
Good but not my bag.
4⭐️ for Speakerboxxx 2⭐️ for The Love Below
A solid funky party album. Some cool sounds and grooves. Stand out tracks for me are "Bowtie", "Hey Ya!", "Dracula's Wedding" and the jazzy cover of "My Favourite Things". The biggest problem for me is the length of the album. It felt a bit of a chore to listen to it all and I feel it could have been trimmed into a solid 80 or 90 minute double. I'm torn between 3 and 4. If I could make my own compilation it would be a 4, but based on what's presented it's a 3
Long and boxy with some classics mind
It’s would be a four with an editor.
This is a fun album. Lots of good songs but way too long and therefore lots of not so good songs too. Would have a higher score if they cut out some of the cruft. Still mostly fun to listen to.
I don't think this is for me, but it's still a good album.
I have a great fondness for this album (though really, it’s two albums) but I am now realising I can’t remember when I last listened to it without skipping a whole bunch. The high points are really high, but there’s a whole lot of filler. Listening to both sides from start to finish was not actually that fun.
A truly diverse hip-hop epic.
Not generally my thing but some pretty decent tracks on there and BOB is, of course, a banger.
Not bad some hit tracks but didn't engage me too much
Definite flavour of Prince. Lots of songs the odd one pops through, a bunch are irritating!
Best hip hop album on this list yet and I assume it will be. Like Andre 3000 more than I should and a few features from Killer Mike make this album even better....can’t bare to give this a 4 with the amount of stupid monologues and non music tracks.
a good album just not a favourite of mine
Enjoyable, like the contrast in the two albums. Apart from the big hits, I like Speakerboxxx more than The Love Below.
such a polarizing experience...
You happy now?
A man of my word.
Liked Speakerboxx, didn't really like The Love Below. I know the point is to be raunchy about love and relationships but it just wasn't my vibe at all.
Speakerboxxx would kick the hell out of The Love Below if not for Hey Ya/ Roses. Both albums overstayed their welcome though
Starts out strong, has interesting and energetic textures, but starts to taper out.
First off, this needs to be treated as two separate albums. Even when doing this, each of the albums is still way too long! There are a lot of tracks that feel like filler, and the various skits should just have been left out completely. It feels like there are potentially two excellent albums in here, each of around 40 min in length. All that aside, there are some really fantastic tracks on both. The bits that I liked, I loved. Two different styles, both with really cool rhymes and flow, great music. Would both easily be a 4 for me... if they were streamlined considerably.
Its a hit and miss album the whole way through. But when it hits, it hits hard.
I respect their musical deviation from fellow artists in the genre at the time, and the rapping is on point. But just not the sound to really grab my attention.
Decent album, surprisingly liked the first hipvhopvalbum better than the funk part
Too long but liked it more than I expected. Second album much better.
guter HipHop. Viele Filler.
Interesting, long, couple of good ones.
impossible to take seriously but thats why its fun
Hey Ya!
big boi > andre 3000
I might not listen to it again, but it had some enjoyable moments. 7.1/10 Best Track: "Hey Ya!"
I like the second half of the album, the Andre 3000 half!
*They call me Mr. Ravioli, Mr. Streudel / Mr. Poke Em with the Noodle, Mr. Cockerspaniel in your Poodle* To ganske ulike album i en pakke, der begge er en god del lengre enn de trenger. Men det er fortsatt mye å like her! Speakerboxxx er jevnt over bad-ass rap. The Love Below er mer all over the place. Hey ya er jo en all-time godlåt, men Spread, Roses, Take off your cool og A life in the day er også fete.
The singles can be catchy, but this album is plagued by awful awful interludes and crap b sides. One of them has a child trying to rap for chrissakes. The singles get this up to a 3, but it goes no higher.
.
Good but this album is giant! 40 songs.
Had some bangers for sure, just too long. If shorter 4 stars
5 stars and all of them are because the music was fun
I didn't finish it because it was like 2 1/2 hours long. But I got like 3/4 through and I didn't like the production on the first few tracks but it quickly became very good. The lyrics were amazing. It's just not really my style... I have to go back to it later and I'm sure I'll like it way more. How I rate the albums: 1 star: bad 2 stars: neutral 3 stars: good 4 stars: amazing 5: stars: perfect
Fistfull of 3.3
Unkown
when?
Half decent album. Not really my thing.
Hip hop, soul. Muy largo. Algunas cosas interesantes.
Andre 3000 has a unique voice, lots of interludes/skits. Would be worth a revisit. Some solid bangers
