Reviews (page 2 of 7)

I started listening to Simple Minds around the time this album was released. I was impressed when I watched their '82 Cologne show on TV (Rockpalast). I lost track a few albums later but once in a while, I pulled out one of their albums I had and always liked their music, to this day.

Incredible stuff. I love this style of new wave. I honestly had only really ever heard Don't you Forget about me. But I really enjoyed this whole album.

I like it, pure 80s 😅... 4 stars plus 1 for the bass guitar...

Stone cold classic

Those coming to Simple Minds when they became a stadium rock band often don't know their roots as an influential and important part of the new wave electronica scene. Until this their albums were packed with instrumentals. This is really the bridge to their popular phase but I still really like the nods back to it with "someone up there likes you" and the more proggy/electronica tracks. I like this a lot. It's got depth.

Jævlig bra

This was one of those albums that was instant love as soon as I put it on. A proper, full, cohesive collection of songs which reminds me why I love the 80s. Also love the album cover, very Catholic school prayer book.

My 80's loving heart adored this album.

This is in my top 10 fave albums of all time

01) Someone Somewhere in Summertime - 10,0 02) Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel - 8,0 03) Promised You a Miracle - 10,0 04) Big Sleep - 8,0 05) Somebody Up There Likes You (Instrumental) - 9,5 06) New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84) - 9,5 07) Glittering Prize - 9,5 08) Hunter and the Hunted - 8,0 09) King is White and in the Crowd - 8,5 TOTAL: 9,00 (90/100) Current ranking: 30/304 This one took me completely by surprise. I thought I knew two songs from the album, but in the end it turned out that I knew five out of nine. And that's a good recipe to get five stars from me. "Someone Somewhere in Summertime" is one of my favorite "summer" songs, "Promised You a Miracle" is a big hit, and when the first notes of "New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84)" started I thought, damn, it's Usura's "Open Your Mind", I know this song! "Somebody Up There Likes You" is a wonderful instrumental, and "Glittering Prize" is another hit that was often played on radio stations in the eighties. With the remaining four songs not bad at all, we come to the final five stars that I didn't think would happen today. Great job, Simple Minds!

One of my favourite Simple Minds albums - my favourite track is the last one: "King is White and in the Crowd".

At first I thought I wouldn’t really like it because of the album cover, and I thought it would be a different type of music. But as soon as the first song started, I felt like it was so familiar and it sounds a lot like the music my dad listens to from the 80s. The album is very long, 4 hours long to be exact, even tho most songs are just another version of the first songs, but it is the type of music I really enjoy listening to. It gives me strong “The cure” vibes and that sort of music, and I like that they have a specific sound but each song is different. Basically only the first 9 songs are the important ones to listen to

Ethereal melodies, uplifting.

Love the vibe

Huh! Thanks for reminding me if the glorious and Simple Minds. Adding them to my list of "live bands to see before I die' list now.... this album = Gorgeous on headphones - they were loving their work together and everything was just working for them. And they shapes pop music for a decade or more and there are some eternal songs that came out of this period (not all on this album, but you get a sense of how they can make soaring anthems here) . Warm sounds, funky beats, and playful - and most of all the gift for the warm voice of Jim Kerr, which of course have us - a few years later - "Don't you (forget about me)" which a new generation is learning. An excellent and very "tight" pop music style, rich vocals and all the funky electric toys of 80s music here. Yes this band deserves a place on the list. They would groove a stadium live. Something to keep in mind. I just checked. Anyone going to be in Nimes (FR) ON 12 JULY?

This album is sensational. I love Jim Kerr's distinctive vocals and the music is brilliant. Such a great sound. One of my favourite bands. It's worth a listen for the instrumental too. Fabulous 👌

Hell yeah. I know others fatigue of it, but I love the fact I've been able to discover tons of new wave thanks to this list. Bring it on!

Oldie but a goodie!

This album is awesome. Sound slike billy idol a bit

♥️

Super!

An absolutely fantastic album for New Wave alternative. 3 absolutely undeniably great and catchy songs, and the rest exude a kind of haunting electronic beat that makes it a great listen.

I love New Wave so I was bound to enjoy this. The use of actual drums really helps this album, and the bass and guitar parts both jump out as particularly fantastic as well. I can definitely see the influence this album had.

My favourite Simple Minds album used to be Once Upon a Time (I like the commercial Big Music sound). Then it became this album (the consensus album) but ultimately would go for Real to Real Cacophony. All three albums are very different from each other, but obviously 5 stars. There is not a single weak track on New Gold Dream and the songs are in the "right" order. A perfect album. Overall score: 10/10.

Perfect album!!

Iconic music executed at its best. One of my all time favourite groups, who produced a quality of sound that is as fresh today as it was 40 years ago.

Probably their best.

I love this album, capturing a moment where the chilly Euro-fluenced dance music they'd been perfecting on Empires and Dance and the Sister Feelings Call set thaw out with a new pop sensibility. It's really one mood, with pop sunshine ('Miracle') and longer more abstract tracks (King Is White) moving the dial back and forth but never leaving the unique mood they create on this album. From hereon in the law of diminishing artistic returns/bigger sales would kick in, as their writing and arrangements became simpler. But marvel at how complete an achievement this is.

LOVE 80s synth pop. Really enjoyed this!!

Wonderful in the day. Lots of good songs.

oh nice, that one-hit-wonder band this album was really good, I’m not too picky when it comes to this genre solid 9/10

Magnificent as is this band as well.

One of the Best!

Fantastic album.

I've always loved this band. This is a great album.

Loved it

good album

Good stuff

I really love the 80s synth vibes of this entire album. My 16-year-old self would be disgusted with me.

The band was very good at making great music….a lot of talent 🎸

Such a great album of synth pop, consistent all the way through and filled with vivid imagery. I was especially enamoured with the bass lines, and I've honestly no idea why I hadn't listened to this one before. Excellent stuff. Favourite track: Glittering Prize Least favourite track: Big Sleep

got my interest right from the opening track and peaked with the big hit, and then right in the middle i got hit with a pure instrumental and it was hard for the momentum to come back. great authentic 80s sound and a handful of songs that i really enjoyed.

Really fun melodramatic melancholic 80s synthpop. Great example of the style, and very catchy. Will definitely be coming back to this.

So unexpectedly good that I'm going to go back and downgrade a U2 rating from yesterday 😅 In a fairer universe, Bono would have stayed at Jim Kerr's level. The cavernous echo and synth sounds here are certainly quite dated but also still epic. A great energy about this.

I think I’m a Simple Minds fan now. This was great. Very 80s in a good way, and a strong mix of different instruments and synth sounds. My dad likes them too. He’s right on this one.

Distinctly 80s but actually quite good

I saw these live 3 times in the 80s once was the tour for this album. I can confirm that they are much much better live than they ever sounded on record! Their music is so full of life and sparkle it really needs to be experienced in a live setting. That being said, this is a top album with some top tunes.

Temazos

Expectation: -> An 80s band I know with a few radio hits. Looking forward to exploring this. After listening: "-> 80s synth pop. Yes, please. I enjoyed about 2/3 of this. The jury is out on the final three on my ranking. My take home point is that this band is more than just ""Don't You (Forget About Me),"" even if I've heard that song 1000 times and perhaps none of this album until today. I was impressed." Track ranking: Miracle Prize Hunter Someone Somebody Sleep Dream King Colours

I definitely liked this more than I thought I would.

☆☆☆☆

New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84) is the first Simple Minds album I’ve come across in this challenge, which genuinely surprised me. I wasn’t hugely familiar with the band outside of “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, so I was really looking forward to giving this a proper listen. This album was a really pleasant surprise and has definitely made me want to explore more of their music. Straight away I loved the sound of the band. It feels completely of its time in the best possible way, with that rich early-80s production and atmosphere throughout. Jim Kerr’s voice is superb as well and suits the music perfectly. The album sounds beautiful from start to finish. The production is excellent, the melodies are strong and the bass playing is incredibly prominent throughout, often stealing the show. There’s a real elegance and mood to the record that makes it very easy to get lost in. Favourite tracks: “Someone Somewhere in Summertime”, “Promised You a Miracle”, “Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel” Least favourite tracks: Everything here deserves its place on the album Album artwork: Cool album cover

i know i liked it i just can't remember shit

Panicked when I saw the four disc version, finding the original was a relief! Enjoy the sound, not fussed about the instrumentals. First simple minds album I've listened too and I enjoyed it.

An all time classic. Needs a few more big hitters on this but I've always been a fan of the album as a whole, really nice blend of New Wave and post-punk. An influential collection of impressive synth for the time.

alles anderi wie simpel gestrickt das album! Viel spass, uf 80er jahr isch verlass. 4 Toast Hawaii

Wieder mal was speziels unerwarteds. Sehr enjoyable und unique style. Wirde wahrsch nöd so oft drilose aber es 3er std bewertig wär fast chli frech Darum 81 82, 83, nei 8-4 bewertig

The beginning of this record was ok, but it seemed like a lot of other early-80s stuff - boppy synth, vague lyrics, dancey beat. However, things improved starting with "Promised You a Miracle" - at that point the album started to get my attention, with the songs getting a little longer and the instrumentation and vocals more intense and interesting. That material still has the underlying format of 80s radio synth music, but is a little more imaginative -- I can see why people think that this record stands out from the rest of the band's work. The bass is great, of course; I just wish they'd mic'd it louder. 4 stars

Possibly the most 80s thing imaginable but it’s relaxing

Boy this takes me back to my junior and senior years of college when the singles and then the album came out. Classic new wave synth pop.

Everything about this album is great. The production is lush and immaculate, the instrumentals are rich and atmospheric, the lyrics are smart and evocative, and Jim Kerr’s vocals are passionate without ever feeling overdone. It all comes together beautifully. While listening, it felt like I was taken on this dreamy, slightly esoteric journey. There’s a sense of mysticism and longing running through the record, like following a lone artist wandering through some beautiful, abstract landscape. It has this cinematic, almost spiritual quality that pulls you in and keeps you floating along. Tracks like “Promised You a Miracle,” “Glittering Prize,” “Someone Somewhere (In Summertime),” and the epic title track are all highlights, but the album flows so well as a whole that it almost feels like one long, cohesive experience. This is Simple Minds at their absolute peak — ambitious, melodic, atmospheric, and full of heart. It’s one of those records that sounds expensive and emotional at the same time. I loved it. Easily one of the best albums of the early 80s.

initially had very low expectations for this album. it very much sounds like an 80s album and was in fact released in the early 80s. loved how experimental it is - it gives it that timeless quality.

Here comes my love of synth and new wave. Jim Kerr has the emblematic voice of post punk. The album opens with Someone Somewhere, a hauntingly beautiful balled with the darkness of new wave. The echoes of the guitars throughout the album, but particularly in Colours Fly. The more poppy Promised you a miracle. I didn’t love the interlude of Somebody up there likes you, but this is quickly made up by New Gold Dream and Glittering Prize. The art of the BUILD UP so brilliantly shown in King is White and in the Crowd. And all in 47 minutes? Powerful, effective and excellent.

I’ve realized I’m just a sucker for synth-pop. But especially if it’s so bass-driven, with excellent synth and vocal hooks almost like co-leads. The songs are all pretty distinct and I especially love the instrumental midway through. One star dinged mainly because of that god-awful cover. But it’s Must-listen #328.

Yksinkertaisten mielien syntiset soundit kuulostivat oikein kivalta.

I like Simple Minds a decent amount, but why is this album so looooong? Many versions of the same song.

Simple Minds as a band rings a bell for me, but nothing I've listened loads to. Was surprised by how coherent and well-packaged this album was! 'Someone Somewhere' is a really cool opening track with a nice chorus:y guitar lead hook, and overall beat. Overall I found this record to be very even through the songs, with cool beats. I suppose if you don't like some typical 80s synth sounds and guitar chorus, this won't be for you. Luckily I do! Top picks were 'Promised You A Miracle' and 'Someone Somewhere'.

I only knew Simple Minds from “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, so it was fun to hear that they aren’t just a one-hit wonder. The first track was a real bop. “Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel” was great too, the bassline is really good. The rest of the album also maintained a high standard, with New Gold Dream standing out as another stellar track. Overall, it’s a really solid ’80s pop album. It made me think of ABC. I really enjoy synth-pop, so this was right up my alley. 4 stars.

So excited for a Simple Minds album. My dad likes the band, so I’m intrigued to listen. The bass and beat in Someone Somewhere is transfixing. I don’t know exactly what it is, but this track is awesome Colours fly didn’t have exactly the same vibe as the first, but I still liked it, it just wasn’t as transcendent. Promised you a miracle brings back the beat. I’m confused on my thoughts about this one, but it was a good time. Big sleep brought back that bass I liked. Yay for an instrumental track in Somebody up there Likes You! The title track itself was also pretty good. I liked the keys. Glittering prize was fun! Hunter and the Hunted was pretty good as well. To finish it off, I felt King is White… to be slightly lacking as a closer. It felt more like an opener or an interlude. 3.5/5 ⭐️ 93/1089

I just love synth. The album as a whole is a little boring but there are some great songs in here. Favs: Someone Somewhere and Big Sleep

Nice to hear them again. The album was better than just the singles I knew

Fine music. Typical Talking Heads.

Y'know, one of the better British new wave albums this list keeps on throwing at you. Not bad. Catchy. Some good poppy synth and some good dark synth. Vibed.

i really like simple minds (although i prefer their earlier stuff), this was a very good listen. great use of synths without sounding too dated

I'd never heard this one before but it is really cool and unique and works great. The mix is weird (produced by the guy who would go on to do all the late weird Scott Walker stuff... and Heyday by The Church) but I think it basically works since the vocals have less emphasis on melody than some of this stuff tends to and more emphasis on ethereal dreamy stuff. So it's great. Some synth sounds I have never heard before too.

good stuff.

A very enjoyable album, but I did prefer their earlier work. Sons and fascination in particular. This was a pivot to a much more stadium friendly sound. 4 stars. Fave track - glittering prize.

This is really good. 80 synthy goodness works for this very well. THE BASSLINES take notes ears. The vocals are smooth and fantastic, mixed in slick and richly layered soundscape that creates a very strong ambient feel with a hint of darkness. I couls tell this is scottish (that is a testament to the development of my ears!). Has echoes of the blue nile in the way it is ambient and sad somehow. Very cohesive record

Enjoyed this. Quite a few catchy enough to make it into my permanent library.

This is so very 80's. So, so 80's. Jim Kerr's voice is smooth. the instruments are brilliant. The songs have great depth to them. It's a great album, but so very 80's in terms of its sound

Some iconic songs.

Pretty good honestly

better than expected 80's stuff

отдаленно напоминает the smiths.

A solid good fun album with some great ups and very few downs. Sometimes simple really works well.

Another classic 80s sounding album. Really enjoyed the instrumentation and it was used incredibly well in the instrumental track. Overall, a really solid album.

Favourite Songs: Someone Somewhere (In Summertime) Colours Fly And Catherine Wheel New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84)

Fantastic city pop

Good 80s shit, nice basslines

Benefitted tremendously from not being part of the run of consecutive 80s albums thrown at us

I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting! Sometimes it hits just right

Funky upbeat pure 80’s synth pop gold.

a commercial but gooood album

Toller Einstieg

I've never listened to Simple Minds before (bar that one) but I have two stories. Firstly, in like 2003 on New Year's Day I ended up being taken to a pub by a very drunk Charlie Burchill with an American American friend as we met him in yummy street and he knew the only open pub. And then a few years later a band I liked and vaguely knew (Fortune Drive) were playing their hometown festival in Bristol, Ashton Court. They had all sorts of technical issues but after finally fixing them all and getting going they got kicked off stage so they could make sure none of that happened to the headliners. Simple Minds. So, mixed feelings. Anyway I gave this two listens as I felt it needed it. I was right. I rather enjoyed it. It dips slightly in the middle but there's loads to like here in Big Sleep, Glittering Prize and King is White. And some excellent bass lines. Why can't we hear fur vocals though?

Surprisingly enjoyed this

Well, not my fav, but well produced, good vocals e guitars.

Surprisingly good. The musicianship is excellent.

Its a nice album, ethereal 80s synths and reverb drums. Quite listenable, but dated as well. 4

I love Simple Minds, so big thumb’s up for me.

The cover is horrendous, but the inside is quite comfy and nice. Great New Wave with a lot of layers.

they sound a lot like the cure

Really good album for SM before they went hits crazy with the mega follow up. Nice balance of guitar and synth on these tracks and Promised You A Miracle is a great pop single. Kerr's voice really strong on this LP too. Well worth a listen.

This whole exercise is really making me reconsider whether or not I actually dislike 80s music as much as I thought I did…

I like this a lot! I knew SM from back in the 80’s and knew the hits. But an entire album is a new discovery. Thanks!

4 Stars (11/15)

Pretty cool synthpop Standout track: Promised You A Miracle low 2/5

Great 80s vibes. A solid listen. 3 songs saved

Kind of like I thought. 80 s style. Good to me!

Very.good

7/10 Fine but only a few songs really stand out

Another nice new wave album. Glad that I’ve been getting a few like these. 4 stars

Woke up pissed at the world that this stupid website gave us another 80s rock album. I was pleasantly surprised by this album. As people in the group chat said this morning, I would also agree that this should not be classified explicitly as a rock album but maybe some sort of synth-pop and alternative rock sub-genre. Very groovy overall— made for an excellent listen driving through the mountains. Songs I added included: Someone Somewhere, Glittering Prize, and Made You a Miracle. All that said, don’t get too cocky 1001 Albums. If I get another 1970s rock album tomorrow I will give it no higher than a 2 as I am rocked-out. Some Rap, pop, or jazz would really be nice 3.9/5

Overall: 7/10 You may say this album hasn't aged well and I'd have no argument against that. It's very much a product of the 80s. For some reason, I enjoy this more than most of the 80s synthpop I've gotten so far. I found myself having a lot of fun with it. Fav Song: Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel

4.0 - Very Good

Bra synthpop! Mye bedre enn kjennelåta Don't You (Forget About Me) skulle tilsi; åpningssporet er GOAT-kaliber. (DM skriver jevnt over bedre låter, da.) Interessant valg av albumcover. Skriker liksom: Ikke kjøp meg! Mulig det skal være litt pagan, New Gold Dream får meg til å tenk på Hermetic Order of the Golder Dawn.

I enjoyed this album a lot! Familiar with the band but not familiar with any of these songs. Incredible bass work on the entire album. Definitely worth listening to again!

Mid 3, leaning high 3, some real solid tracks but a couple misses, would have been a 4 otherwise

Good album,, 8/10

good for working

Went in with average expectations given how bad some pop from this era can sound, but ended up really enjoying it. Classic 80s synth in the vein of early Talk Talk or Tears for Fears, both of whom I love. The title track is excellent.

Thoroughly enjoyed this 80s rock album. Keep: Promised you a miracle

7/10…new wave / 80s pop

Really good album

Simple Minds are the defacto band for beautiful music of this era. This record really highlights that.

Dating myself, but Simple Minds were always one of my favourite bands of the 80s (even if their song titles sound a little pretentious now).

Ok, 80’s vibe

Just the epitome of that echoey 80s sound

Yet another band I rediscovered through this list. I know what the Simple Minds play - vaguely - but now I listened to what some consider their best album and I really, really like it. It's fresh 80s rock music with some great ideas.

Big 80s fan, and some huge nostalgia around a few of the songs. Still a great example of sophisticated, smooth, intellectual pop songwriting. 4⭐️

i love the 80s

Panašu į depeche mode, geras balsas.

Another album where the only version available on Spotify is a bloated, extended edition. This one is a ridiculous 5 disc version. When it comes to the original songs, I liked them well enough. The singles are the obvious stand out tracks, but the rest of the music was good enough that I'm just about giving a 4.

Sometimes I love eighties music. Unabashedly pretentious, dark and moody (although this rather glitters at times), with a driving prominent bass. Takes the beat from disco and twists it into synth/rock music. This sounds fantastic.

The Simple Minds were very much part of me finding my musical identity. It some much more poppy and goody-goody than it did at the time but I think the songs still stand, also the lesser known ones. Nice basslines, and the vocals stand out.

Simple Minds has quickly become one of my favorite 80s new wave bands. I hadn’t really dug into any of their full albums until the last 6 months or so, and now that I have, I’ve found a whole new appreciation for them. I used to have a greatest hits album from them, but it only had a couple of really good tracks, and the rest felt pretty mediocre. That made me think the rest of their catalog would be just as underwhelming, if not worse. But man, was I wrong. This album, in particular, leans heavily into synthpop, with the guitars playing more of a complementary role to the synthesizers. There’s also a strong art rock vibe running through it, which likely gives Simple Minds their more mature and distinctive sound.

Always liked this album which many fans say is peak Simple Minds. The 3 singles are great, but for me the title track is still a banger and one I still listen to regularly.

New wave could not exist in a post-internet world. Call it self-awareness, call it irony, but all media now is dripping in something that these synths refuse to take part of. It's pure, it's genuine. That said, I don't think this is the best new wave album

pure synthwave

4 - Dunno, just liked it. Cheesy but good

I have always been a clear simple minds fan. I enjoyed this album

Loved the 80's vibe here, still has something to offer

4 So underrated. Simple Minds were always relegated to the off-season U2 especially given their sweeping arrangements and Jim Kerr's passion. However, when they found their sound on this album, this was Art Pop. Mel Gaynor gave them a real head-nodding drive/groove. Those riffs ("Promised You A Miracle") were sparkling and uplifting ("Someone, Somewhere (In Summertime")). "The King is White and In The Crowd" is a helluva closer too. In the end, everyone compares them to U2. No one takes into account, this was U2's inspiration - not the other way around.

Much more like it, 8/10, some good 80s pop rock

Love the bass lines on this thing, some of the more abstract soundscapes don’t land for me and the album is weaker for them (though I enjoy them in an of themselves) but damn when this thing is good it’s good (see Glittering Prize)

Great album so nostalgic of the early mid 80s

This is actually pretty good. I dig the vibes.

Enjoyed this. Some familiar songs, especially if you listen to 6Music.

I love me some Simple Minds! They are such a great 80s new wave band and this album was solid and lots of fun. This album made me want to go dancing with my mom. I’m definitely listening to this again in the future!

I’m not sure if any band exemplifies 80s new wave as well as Simple Minds. This is the sound. Really good album. Also - fascinated to learn a while ago that the band is still releasing music. Good music! I’m all for it.

finally, a good palette cleanser after all the weird noisy new wave i heard before. polished, moderately reverberated, and having the typical class that artsy 80s pop should have, this one was a generally good listen. new gold dream has a sound that makes you feel like you're in a morbidly long dress and dancing in the moonlight in a church. airy and atmospheric, under the right conditions, this album makes you feel like you're floating on air. it's said that billy idol and brian eno were fans of these guys, and i can hear the influence.

Disclaimer: I really like Simple Minds, so this rating is a bit biased like my Jamiroquai review. Overall, this is my favorite Simple Minds album. Pretty much every song is really good and well polished. The lowest rated song for me was the very last one, "King is White and in the Crowd", mainly because it's 7 minutes long and it drags on for 3 minutes too much with just the same melody playing over and over. Well put together album overall though and definitely one should listen to before they die. 3.89/5 stars = 4 stars. Can't Miss tracks: "Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel" "Promised You A Miracle" "Somebody up there Likes You"

7/10 Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Very 80s, but in a good way. It drifts at times, but the songs are good and it holds a lot of strong nostalgia for me

i love when this endeavor makes me listen to bands i’ve only heard one hit song from. i like every song on this so much better than what i had heard. Glittering Prize! so good! so 80s so awesome i loved it

pretty good and fun!

Nice album with an interesting sound

like new order, but not as good.

very great and catchy new wave tunes, give it a listen

Awesome 80's

Yeah...it's very of its time. I get it. But...that time was AWESOME. Call it a guilty pleasure if you want, but I'm hear for the 80's synth/vibe/pop whatever you want to call it on this album. This album was 100% new to me...and it was pure 80's gold.

I enjoyed this, was like a slightly more timid Depeche mode. Promised You a Miracle the stand out but after the 3rd or 4th version I was done with it.

The border between somber, mellow and emotive

Old Gold Daydream.

dated in every sense

3.5 I had this at the start of the week when it didn't rate so highly. The last two days however have had A-ha and Pet Shop Boys which has given this a new lease of life. Hearing how bad new-wave could get definitely puts this in perspective. Tails off towards the end but some solid tracks towards the start.

Not usually a fan of these 80s albums, but I found this one quite catchy Nothing amazing or groundbreaking here - but it was a pleasant sounding album that I surprisingly enjoyed 4 ⭐️

What an underrated band. I'm adding this to the mix of the albums I regularly listen to. I was already a fan some of these songs, but I particularly enjoyed the last two tracks. They're beautifully orchestrated and performed. 4 stars for now, but it'll likely turn into 5 stars over time.

Simple Minds were all over the radio when I was a kid so I am sure I had heard at least one of the songs on this album in my youth, but I am unfamiliar with their music outside of the ever-present "Don't You (Forget About Me)". This is a great record, I can see it was their breakthrough.

I liked this, but not enough that I'd play it repeatedly. No particular songs stood out, but the overall vibe is pretty good and quite consistent throughout. The bass playing is particularly great on this album

Feels like there's been a lot of new wave recently, and mostly I can leave it. But this got a couple listens, and the layered sound grew on me, and I began to really hear it. Still feel I kind of need to go back to it some more.

Took a few listens but I actually really love the vibes!

New gold dream is a really well made new wave album that sums up the popular sound of the 80’s with some great musical performances. The album kicks off with someone somewhere (in summertime), a melodic, synth heavy track with echoing vocals and is quite catchy. The funky bass carries the next track “colours fly and Catherine wheel” which is an enjoyable track. The same can be said for “Promised you a miracle” but this track comes through with a much more infectious energy and just has more going on in general, with some underrated guitar work. “Big sleep” comes through more laid-back but a good track nonetheless, although it feels the track kept building to nothing. “Somebody up there likes you” ends the first half of the album with a nice instrumental. The second half of the album opens with the title track “new gold dream” with comes in with a great synth rock energy. The same can be said about “glittering prize”. The final 2 tracks “Hunter and the hunted” and “King is white and in the crowd” have a darker vibe and end the album on a good night with, again, brilliant synth, guitar & bass work. If you like the 80’s new wave sound, like I do, you will have a good time with this album. It is a batch of 10 really well made new wave pop / synth rock tracks with some great melodies, production value & musical performances. It is missing enough standout tracks to be one of the better albums of the era, but each song is at least good and does a good job of providing that new wave sound. 4/5.

Someone Somewhere // Promised You A Miracle // Glittering Prize //

The time The place The emotion These all aligned for me. Simple Minds were a weekly feature of my life at one point so the familiarity is welcome. Warm, cosy, comfortable.

A good album, though very long. I wasn't quite able to finish it all but I liked the music style. My favorite songs were Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), Big Sleep and Glittering Prize - Extended Theme.

Reminded me of some other 80s era new wave-y stuff. Enjoyed the listen without feeling too blown away. Solidly a 3.5+ for me so we'll go 4 this time.

Lite mer lattjo än annan new wave.

Solid fyra.

Chill 80s synthwave vibes

The bass in this album is tremendous, and the production is quite solid, even though it bleeds from the 80's sound. In addition to the production, I also enjoyed the feeling of mistery that the album presents

Rainy 80s Nostalgia

🎧Surprisingly good 80s synth/new wave album. Favorite tracks: Somebody Up There Likes You, Glittering Prize

"New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)" is the fifth studio album by Scottish band Simple Minds. It is regarded as one of the defining albums in the new pop movement of the early 1980's. The album also marked a turning point for the band as they had failed to get any commercial success with their four previous albums and this made it to #3 in the UK and #69 in the US. The album was produced by Peter Walsh. The bandmembers on the album were Jim Kerr (lead vocals), Charlie Burchill (guitar), Michael MacNeil (keyboards), Derek Forbes (bass), Mel Gaynor (drums), Mike Ogletree (drums) and Kenny Hyslop (drums). The album opens with "Someone Somewhere in Summertime." A melodic guitar intro. The vocals, synth and a ticking drum come in. This is very synth heavy with it carrying the melody. Echoing vocals. The song becomes louder with the drums. It's about yearning. Hey, there is one song that I've heard and that is "Promised You a Miracle." Poppy with the synth keys. Very 80's sounding with drums. Oh, more echoing vocals. Side B begins with "New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)." Layered synths. A rock beat and a hypnotic one at that. A catchy and upbeat melody. Lots of imagery. Great song! "Glittering Prize" keeps the positive vibes as Kerr sings about getting a glimpse of something and going out and getting it. Glossy synths with the melody and very much bass forward. Guitars ringing. Another one of the better songs on the album. "Hunter and the Hunted" begins very quietly with a beat and eerie synths. It eventually gets louder. Wow, a funky bass. About giving in to temptation, Kerr almost whispering at points. The song was plodding along and in comes Herbie Hancock giving some funk and psychedelia on the synths. I have to admit, being an American and your initial exposure to Simple Minds being "Don't You Forget About Me," it surprised me to find out that there's whole other side of this anthemic-U2ish band. And that side is the new pop genre where they are much more like ABC and the Human League than U2. This album is very 80's synth pop but the music itself is deeper being dreamy, upbeat and lush. I honestly didn't get into this until the second spin. I really liked the funky bass. The melodies are brilliant in spots. Overall, this is really good album with the highs being quite high. Don't go into this album expecting "The Breakfast Club." The band could have cared less about US teenagers anyway.

Un pop-rock léché et sophistiqué

oh to be a teen in the 80s

It’s got all the prerequisites of classic ‘80s new wave/post-punk that I love: prominent bass, washes of synthesizer, danceability balanced with moody cinematic atmosphere, vocal dramatics, and guitar used primarily for accent. The title track rides a great motorik rhythm (with cowbell!) and totally slaps, and wow — Herbie Hancock plays the synth solo on “Hunter and the Hunted.” How have I overlooked this album? Unimportantly, I have questions about the album cover’s religious iconography, which may have subconsciously put me off of it in the past.

I only knew their monster hit "don't you forget about me" and it never occurred to me to listen to their lps. This was pretty good.

I was just coming online in the 80s and am kind of glad I missed most of it but am delighted to find this one in the end!

This album was everywhere in the 80s. I liked it back then too. Then Simple Minds and this album fell into oblivion. At the beginning of the 2000s I found the album on a bargain table, bought it and hardly listened to it. But now again. I was skeptical at first and during the first few songs. I could still remember Promised You a Miracle well. I thought that was it and I'd only listen to the rest briefly. I actually quite liked the other tracks. I may have underestimated the album and will listen to it again. 4/5

‘Open your mind’ ;)

All of their songs perfectly emasculate the vibe of the 80's, at least, the vibe we modern folk believe the 80's were like. This sounds cliché, but it is perfectly fitting music for driving a sedan down a crowded alleyway, no phones in sight, just puuure viibes.

Simple Minds are another band I always thought I should like better than I did—until now, ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ was the only song I really liked—but this album really works as an album if you avoid the five hundred versions of ‘Promised You A Miracle’ at the end of the deluxe edition…

one of my favorite albums of the 80s. the bass is a big standout for me. and glittering prize… 🩷 4.5

Ciekawy album. Moim zdaniem buduje to fantastyczne napięcie. Mega zdziwiło mnie to, jaką transformację przechodzi ten album w połowie. W samym środku mamy "Somebody Up There Likes You" (swoją drogą super instrumental).

I think it's something that requires bpth time and effort to fully apreciate. I will come back to this one day and enjoy it properly I hope.

Ok, od zera do (prawie) bohatera. New Gold Dream to imo jednak dobra płyta. Pomogło mi też, o dziwo, olanie zupełnie tekstów i docenianie jedynie słów w kontekście fajnego brzmienia w rytmie. Top tracks: Someone somewhere (in summertime) Glittering prize Hunter and the hunted

Fantastyczny album - emocjonalna podróż, pełna introspekcji, marzeń i refleksji nad przemijaniem. "Somewhere there is some place that one million eyes can't see And somewhere there is someone who can see what I can see' 4, album wchodzi do mojej stałej rotacji

Love them

Classic 80's vibe. Synth Pop at it's finest. One of my favorite 80's groups.

I really liked the songs. Music accompaniment for the movie scene where the hero looks at VHS tapes of the family he’s lost

Some good clean 80s fun

Very 80s, but quite cool - dark and atmospheric

So I only knew Simple Minds from their one big song and that song wasn’t on this album so I was fairly apprehensive going in But this is a pretty great synth pop record A generous 4

Bra men når inte riktigt ända fram.

Great bit of early 80s new wave. Title track was a standout. Not much more to say.

Very 80s, kinda samey but thoroughly enjoyed regardless

This album gets the award for the shittiest cover ever. But with that said, cool stuff! Love the vibe of the more toned-down vocals leaving plenty of room for the bass and synth.

Oh goddamn this takes me back! Sounds best played loud in the car, windows rolled down, while singing along at full volume. Particularly Glittering Prize. Promised You a Miracle is definitive of the 1980s style. It’s hard to find a better example. It’s perfect. 4/5

Blind album, know the artist. Album was pretty good for 80s which I generally don't see out a lot.

I just really like sumptuous 80s new romantic synthpop, okay? And like, this tails off a bit towards the end, and peaks with literally the first track thanks to Someone Somewhere, but it's really really good soundtrack to my day.

This has aged better than a lot of 80s music. I really like these guys and most of the tracks on this album have aged pretty well and sounded really good when they were new. "New Gold Dream" is one of my personal favorites, and brings back great memories. "Glittering Prize" and "Somebody Up There Likes You" were the favorites for this listen.

Until 2021, I had never heard of Simple Minds until one fine day a taxi driver wearing fluorescent glasses and a button-down shirt half-open revealing a hairy chest passed by the street where I work, driving his taxi slowly playing Don't You Forget About Me at the last volume that car stereo could emit. Since then, this song and those from the album Once Upon a Time have been a must-have in my daily playlists. However, I had never heard another album besides this one and it was a pleasant surprise to discover that even 3 years before the band's Big Hit Album, they already sounded in this spectacular way, a very characteristic 80s sound, but of course, without all those big hits with the exception of the first track. Anyway, I loved it! I'll leave 4 stars!

Took me back to my teen years

I’d never heard of this album. I knew the band’s biggest singles (“The Breakfast Club” was one of my favourite films as a teen in the 80s). I was surprised to see this album here and have such ecstatic reviews from the British music press. I’ll be honest: on my first listen I didn’t like it at all. Might have been my mood, though. So I listened to it a second time last night in bed, and a switch flipped. Loved it. Who knew?

An awesome album, though I find it falters slightly towards the end. Promised you a miracle and Glittering prize are still great songs today.

8/10. :) I love new wave! I've heard more remarkable new wave albums, but this is still a solid, and enjoyable album!!! :)

Some damn good synth-pop right here, kept my attention the whole way through.

A few songs veer off a bit too towards pop, but overall, I like the synthy kind of surreal sound.

one of the defining albums of the new-wave/new-pop movement from Scottish Band Simply Minds, this album maintains the distinctive new-wave sound while still achieving timeless pop sensibilities. Had to note the guest appearance from Herbie Hancock on keyboard for Hunter and the Hunted. Incredibly pretty sound that influenced U2's 1984 The Unforgettable Fire and ultimately influenced Bono's sound.

I was expecting an album full of Don't You Forget About Me's, but this was surprisingly enjoyable - lots of dark synthy stuff that I am naturally predisposed to. An unexpected hit.

The 80s keep surprising me. I actually really enjoyed this. Promised You A miracle was a standout. Some really interesting beats.

This is great. Flags in places at times though but overall a winner. Captures them at their best before Jim Kerr’s pompous tendencies got the better of him. My mum was once in the same house as Jim Kerr. And she recognised him. They were that famous in Scotland

I like Don't You Forget About Me as much as the next kid who grew up in the 80s, but TIL it wasn't even written by Simple Minds - it was written specifically for The Breakfast Club and Simple Minds reluctantly agreed to record it after Bryan Ferry and Billy Idol each declined (apparently Simple Minds have Chrissie Hynde to thank for pushing then husband Jim Kerr to record it - it ended up being their biggest hit). That said, they made it their own, because it has a similar sound to the songs on this album (probably at bare minimum due to Kerr's very distinctive voice). I liked this album, particularly the bass playing. The recording quality is excellent (turn it up - the sonic quality really comes through when played loud), but the music is definitely VERY 80s. Regardless, solid album worth listening to. Favorite Tracks: Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel, Big Sleep, New Gold Dream, King is White and in the Crowd.

My second album by a Scottish band released in 82 in a row. Luckily this one got a lot of things right that the previous one failed at. I like the layers here, creating a texture that melds into a pleasing whole. I don't think it's amazing enough to deserve a 5 star rating, but it's a solid 4.

7/17/24. A fantastic 80s new wave album with a lot of funk elements. Glad I came across this one as I wasn't familiar with the group, but this earns some replays as I enjoyed each song.

Heard of them; not sure I'm familiar with their songs.

4/5 Atmospheric, otherworldly, funky, futuristic. A lot of words can be used to describe this album but none seem to sum it up sufficiently. I know I like it a lot though. The lyrics and vocals dance around saying a lot without saying or doing much, and the change ups and punchiness of the instrumentals are magnificent. An inconsistent tracklist, with plenty of room for ok-ness as the album progresses past the incredible highs, reduces the overall enjoyment for me. Someone Somewhere (In Summertime) 5/5 Colours Fly And Catherine Wheel 4/5 Promised You A Miracle 5/5 (FAV) Big Sleep 5/5 Somebody Up There Likes You 3.5/5 New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84) 3.5/5 (LEAST FAV) Glittering Prize 4/5 Hunter And The Hunted 4/5 King Is White And In The Crowd 4/5

8/10. I enjoyed it. Had a little less focus with kids running around while I listened but liked the mix and vibes. Put Someone Somewhere and Promised You a Miracle on the 5 star list.

I don't mind myself a bit of new wave and it's was enjoyable digging into this album. Faves for me: Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), Promised You A Miracle, Somebody Up There Likes You.

Ok, I've definitely had these guys mixed up in my head with Simply Red, so this was already a useful exercise! 😆 Ah, they're the "Don't You Forget About Me" guys - that helps orient me. I guess my new wave rehabilitation continues - this was alright, mostly - sometimes a touch more poppy than I'd prefer, and I would probably increase the post-punk and gothiness in the mix, if I had my way. Fave tracks - "Someone, Somewhere in Summertime", instrumental "Somebody Up There Likes You", and the title track...

Listened Before: Y Oh yes. This is an absolutely awesome new wave album by one of the best new wave artists. Early enough not to be over-polished, but polished enough to be a fun listen. Love it! Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)

The last really good SM album. Not their best, but this straddles their early inventive material such as I Travel and their tilt into stadium rock with Someone and Miracle. I prefer the more experimental tracks, such as King is White, but this is still a set full of great tunes that I loved at the time and still love now.

Always nice to listen to an album by a band who I know for one or two good songs and discover that, shockingly, they have a bunch of other good songs as well. Wonderful mix of bombastic synth pop and more ethereal moods.

This is a good album and explains where a lot of U2 comes from. The singles are magnificent. The rest is pretty great. 3.5.

I used to really dislike this band as they seemed to aspire to be U2 type stadium rockstars but a delve into their early and mid period and the quality is really high. Here there is a optimistic assurance in the music that brilliantly holds together. Great 80s rock/pop.

Forty years old? Still has a nice vibe, in small does.

Firstly, the album cover and album name are both terrible, very forgettable. As for the album, it was very 80s, which I liked. Some songs were ok, but overall I liked the synths and everything.

I really liked this, I feel like the whole thing was good, bordering on a 5 but I don't see myself being like obsessed w/ this or any song in particular, I just feel like every song was an enjoyable listen so overall very good as an album, 8/10

I listened this morning and forgot to write a review and it’s been a long ass day between then and now. I think I liked it a good bit. Ok, yeah, just relistened to a few and it’s good. Go electric bass! No way Lucas scoops this one 8/10

I liked this album! I would listen again but I'm not sure if it is a top album for me.

At first I thought it was a little generic, but I loved the 2nd and 3rd songs. The diversity of style was great, and I really love the groove and timbre they have!

Very cool sound. I especially like their bass.

Good stuff. More new wave than the radio hits from Big Chaie.

Good songs.

I was not very familiar with this group, but enjoyed the album.

Landing smack dab in the middle of the synthpop age, Simple Minds are anything but in this breakthrough. The new gold dream shimmers and shines throughout, lending itself to plenty of opportunities for the listener to burst through the gates with this blaring. It is little to no surprise that they would end up defining the 80s in their own way and it starts here. Favorites: Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel, Promised You a Miracle, New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84), Glittering Prize.

I really like this one but there is one song thats really repetitive

Some great remixes but come really compressed hard to hear tracks. This was a mixed bag. Love Glittering Prize and Promised You A Miracle

💖 glittering prize 🗣️ 8️⃣

Really liked this one Really up my street Singles are great Album tracks are great Will listen to it more during the week 4

Didn’t realize that Simple Minds were that big in the UK- in my mind they’re firmly in the one hit wonder category (whoops?). Fun album! We love you unexpected Herbie Hancock solo (by the way, Hunter and the Hunted sounds so much like an A-Ha song). Favorite tracks: Someone Somewhere, Promised You a Miracle, Big Sleep, New Gold Dream.

Great album

Decent overall album. Worth a listen.

Listened to some and enjoyed. Saved

I'm not sure how this never made it onto my radar!

I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. It did live up to the idea of ambient dance music.

Can't hear any Simple Minds without thinking of The Breakfast Club. Love the movie and love the sound/era.

Good singles band, still enjoy their songs but not played regularly.

This sounds like the 80s & I like it.

Ready for a deeper dive after this listen.

Gewoon fijne 80s pop, typische Simple Minds sound. Fijn om naar te luisteren, geen knallers.

At first I was disappointed because "Promised You a Miracle" is an absolute banger, and yet nothing even closely matched that energy. But on my second listen, I started to appreciate it a bit more for what it is. Lots of influences here. Billy Idol in "Someone Somewhere", Talking Heads in "Colours Fly", New Order in "Somebody Up There Likes You", and Joy Division in "King is White." I like the funky basslines in some songs, the dark expressive vocals, and of course the lush multi-layered atmospheric synths. There may not be any mind-blowing gorgeous pieces like in a New Order or OMD record, but I can have a nice time chilling to every piece on here. Having only 9 tracks on the longer end helps in its favor, since they add an ambient presence to immerse you, and not have you anxious for the next piece.

Stylish and sophisticated and rhythmically interesting (bass playing is great). Plus pleasantly brooding, in a distinctly new wave way. But not exactly timeless, however The synths glitter a bit too much on “Glittering Prize,” say, and the drum machine (which it must be) a bit too prominent on “Hunter and Hunted,” even if the songs are otherwise solid and interesting. In other words, this is very much of late ‘80s, but clearly in a “best of” or “good as it got” sense of that era. There’s clear drive and consistent depth and quality on offer here, but they are in second tier of one's fave bands of this era, his musical awakening as it were.

1982: New pop, new wave, art pop, synth-pop

Liked it more than i was prepared to

Bass lines y synth complementan excelente. Muchos matices. Armonía sencilla pero completa. Vocales chingonas.

much better than I thought, would like to listen some more. Good sound, ahead of its time.

Album #27 Like most Americans born in 80s, my only knowledge of Simple Minds is "Don't You (Forget About Me)" from the film, "The Breakfast Club". For 80s synth-pop, this album is surprisingly deep and soulful. It was great to listen to, and definitely changed my opinion this group. 4*

I remember they played a concert a few hundred metres from my house when i was 16 or so. Good memories! Apart from that i like the sound of the album with a couple of songs that stand out.

Promised You a Miracle is still a great song, of course, but I was not too familiar with the rest of the songs going into this. Overall, I thought this was quite good. I didn't realise how bass-heavy this was; together with the vocals the music occasionally reminded me of David Sylvian/Japan. My only two issues are the rather muffled production and the lack of punchiness of the songs. At times the music felt a little pedestrian and my mind started to wander.

Elska þetta sánd. Elska nokkur af þessum lögum. Algjört synth new wave dreamy dót. Elska það.
