difficult minds
4.0 - New wave synth-pop with some slapping bass. I like the way this record gathers to a crescendo with the middle six songs, starting with "Promised You A Miracle." "Big Sleep" beautifully layers sound, each element building on the other. The instrumental "Somebody Up There Likes You" sounds like an Eno-esque ambient composition. "New Gold Dream..." reveals Simple Minds' larger pop ambitions that are more fully realized on later works. Finally, check out Herbie Hancock's synth solo towards the end of "Hunter And The Hunted"!
Kinda dark, kind of brooding, kinda camp almost
bops all around
My first encounter with Simple Minds was from The Breakfast Club soundtrack. Their sound blew me away, I recall. Although I am familiar with their later work, this was new to me, and I wished I'd listened to it before. This was the sort of sound that I really loved in '81-'82-'83-'84.
Wait, what about Don't You Forget About Me?? It was okay. I didn't expect to love an album of Simple Minds, so I'm not disappointed.
Even though I really love Don't You (Forget About Me) and Alive and Kicking, but I've never listened to a whole Simple Minds album. Didn't feel like I needed to hear more from them, I guess. For the most part, today's listen supported that feeling. I really loved a few songs but most didn't make me want to hear more.
Simple Minds’ album Once Upon a Time was one of the albums I listened to most in the 80s. It has continued to be in my regular rotation to this day. I adore that album. It is so spectacularly good that I have found it hard to escape its gravity when I am in the mood for Simple Minds. I’ve heard a couple of songs from this album on various collections but never had listened to the album. While I’m glad to have had the opportunity, listening to this made me feel like I was on a date with the wrong person. New Gold Dream just can’t escape the shadow cast by Once Upon a Time. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to go spend some time with my true love…
Super album
Some pretty rad 80s ethereal synth. I liked this quite a bit, honestly.
What an album! I'm glad Ammee made us listen to it non stop!
Great album
An outrageously 80s New-Wave Synth-Pop album. I can totally see how this was probably quite an inspiration for the 80s revival and synthwave scene we're seeing right now, a scene and aesthetic I really love, and probably the thing that got me into 80s Synth-Pop in the first place. I think there was a little too much of the same thing to keep me fully invested for the entire album, but it was still really good. Favourite: Promised You A Miracle
45 minutes of dreamy goodness
Nice. Very 80s, not extremely memorable but still solid. Could listen to this again sometime.
Have listened to previously, did not relisten. 3.5/5
The title song is the best the Simple Minda have ever made. Such a great song.
Jammier and simpler than it sounds.
Very chill and enjoyable. I love the instrumentation, especially the bass but the synths are great too. Glittering Prize is just a fantastic song by any measure.
Very cool landmark 80s record! Melodic songwriting at its finest, some very good hooks. Just a brilliant pop record with beautiful sounds. My only gripe is the somewhat muddy mix. Favorite lyrics: - Brilliant days, wake up on Brilliant days. Shadows of brilliant ways will change all the time. Memories, burning gold memories. Cold of day memories change me in these times. - Where did you go? Immaculate friend. For a lifetime I'm grateful. And it's only seconds away. - Like a glittering prize, I saw you up on a clear day. First taking heart, then a last breath away. - The side effects of cruising at the speed of life. - Kyoto in the snow. Heaven's far away. Key tracks: Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), Promised You A Miracle, Big Sleep, Somebody Up There Likes You, New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84), Glittering Prize, Hunter And The Hunted. 8 out of 10
80s synth pop and new wave are really not my cup of tea but I enjoyed this album a lot more than I thought I would. A great collection of songs.
Great 80s bass sound and synths. Catchy hit singles and atmospheric songs. Mature sounding, but with groove. Not yet the stadium rockers of the late 80s. Caught between Bunnymen, Duran, U2 - in a very good way.
Stylish and atmospheric, ‘New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84)’ is up there with ‘The Lexicon Of Love’ by ABC and ‘Dare’ by The Human League as the best of the quintessential pop/synth/new wave albums from the early 80s.
Holds up well, especially the relatively complex rhythms and the understated guitar work, which one sometimes must strain to hear over the synths, which never reach "ultimate '80s" degrees off cheesiness but are maybe more prominent than might be considered absolutely ideal. Kerr is a strong vocalist, believable, concerned sounding, a less showy Bono. One wishes there was an auto production filter to hear what this record, made with the studio tech available today or in the aughts, might have sounded. One suspects they were great live and wishes one had seen them so. And hey editors, they ruled more in the early and mid-80s, not late.
Ahh the memories
baita som, oitentista e pa
Pure, shiny, hook-driven pop, and that is by no means a bad thing. Jim Kerr sounds great here.
I like most 80's music and I have always liked Simple Minds just fine. I was the exact right age for Breakfast Club so there's that. Anyway, this is *very* 80's and I enjoyed it completely. I am not particularly convinced this album belongs on this list but I'm happy to have had it brought to my attention.
Photographing SM at a Day on the Green a few years ago (with the B-52s supporting) was one of life's great thrills. This is the album when they start to morph into the 80s stadium band they became. Some great songs - the title track, Glittering Prize, Promised You a Miracle - but not their best album. I prefer its predecessor, Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call, which, like their earlier albums, is a lot more 'Kraut-y' (if such a word exists). Some good footage of them on the Tube playing these songs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KK-thT2IaaA with their best line-up.
A band I'd tried getting into on the premise I was missing something. Conjures memories of the 80's and John Hughes movies but there's a lot more going on behind the facade. The hits are a real treat but the rest is a bit hit and miss as you'd expect. All in all this is high-end 80's New Wave.
I can't tell if I genuinely liked this or if, due to my age, I am predisposed to feeling comforted by 80's synths and Jim Kerr's voice so there are may be two stars of bias in this rating.
I really enjoyed the sound they make, quite 80s so nostalgic but more than that. 4*
I really enjoyed this album. The bass was great throughout each track. The only thing was that I had a difficult time hearing the lyrics.
Definitely one of the most important new wave records of that time and maybe the best album by Simple Minds. This is a project which every pop music's fan really should enjoy, because this is a very well produced LP of that genre.
I don't know if I've heard more than one song from Simple Minds, and sometimes it takes me a minute to remember that that one song is from Simple Minds. Similar to the Pyschodelic Furs, Simple Minds are a band that I think I like, but I don't know enough of their catalog. I was pleasantly surprised by the album New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84). Their sound definitely takes me back to the 80s because I was present for what was on the radio at the time, and not because the tracks sounded like they are STUCK in the 80s. New Gold Dream could fit in with what's on the radio today. The album is consistently good or better. I found myself enjoying the album more as I continued to listen. My favorite tracks were "Somebody Up There Likes You (Instrumental)", "New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84)", and "Glittering Prize". I could easily listen to this album again.

This one really surprised me at just how good it is. The songs are excellent, the playing...particularly bass and drums absolutely first rate and funky as hell. Jim Kerr hasn't quite found his trademark voice, sometimes sounding like Howard DeVoto, but you definitely see the arena rock mega stardom that's to come. An excellent 80s rock album. 4.5 🌟
Perfect distillation of the 80s sound
This is a sold 3.5 star album.
Återigen, ett pangalbum? Det är så otippat att dessa är samma grabbar som gjorde don't you (forget about me)?? älskar älskar new wave
This was a surprise for me. Enjoyed it quite a bit.
they had a vey unique sound that conjures up dark and brooding places but without the gloom of the goths
This one really surprised me at just how good it is. The songs are excellent, the playing...particularly bass and drums absolutely first rate and funky as hell. Jim Kerr hasn't quite found his trademark voice, sometimes sounding like Howard DeSoto, but you definitely see the arena rock mega stars that's to come. An excellent 80s rock album. 4.5 🌟
It took me a minute to get into, but once I did I really enjoyed. I get some Jim Morrison vibes from the lead singer. The music itself is a hypnotizing pulsating blend of new wave and synth pop. Though the use of synth and echo dates the album a bit, it comes together very well. The arrangement is careful and deliberate and creates a sense of suspension and release throughout.
Classic album from the '80s. Loved this at the time, still do. Has some f the 80s dated feel, but fares a lot better than most.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Someone somewhere
I have a friend who loves this album but I'd never listened to it. Now I see why she loves it. It's a super cool new wave work, with a title that deftly looks forward to the future.
Naf as fuck but spawned one of my favourite 90s dance tracks and the rest is decent. I'm feeling generous.
80's, but in a good way
Gold by name….. this is the transition album between post punk and stadium rock. Fantastic blend!
Een beetje eenheidssoep, maar wel genietbaar
Better than I expected, not as bombastic
I’ve never listened to Simple Minds beyond the obvious hits before. Probably shouldn’t be surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Both the music and the vocal are pure 80s New Wave vibe.
kinda hesitating between 3 and 4 (again!). A bit soft rock, but I like softness every once in a while
Beautiful, energetic, cutting edge
A lot of people get confused by the name of this album and assume it's a compilation. This is understandable as it has so many great classic pop songs.
Straight up 80s sound. That is not a bad thing. It's got the digital-sounding background with some funkiness to it.
Overall this album was solid. Classic new wave. I enjoyed it, though I can't say I would revisit every single song on this album. 4/5 stars.
3.5
Yllättävän hyvää kasaripaukuttelua.
Verrassend goed!
Loving the new wave/synth from this album. I have of course heard some Simple Minds. But not a ton. Now it’s time to look through more of their discography.
I remember almost 40 years ago (OMG!) first listening to this album and being completely blown away by it. So much that I wrote a letter to the band gushing about how brilliant it was. That was a first (and last) for me. Back then I would have given it 5 stars instantly. Listening to it again now I find that some of the singles such as Promised you a miracle didn’t age too well and I cringe a bit at the overly pretentious lyrics and Jim Kerr’s 80s “New Romantic” singing style. However there are some real gems on this and I really like the more atmospheric and moody pieces such as Someone Somewhere, Big Sleep, Somebody up there and Hunter and the Hunted. It’s good to hear that the deep and propulsive bass and drums throughout the album still hit the spot.
Pleasant semi-atmospheric rock. Not life-changing, but maybe a good album to put on while working when you don't want to get distracted.
Only know this band for the one hit, but this is a very enjoyable album. I was fully prepared for some christian rock based on this cover though. Very smooth '80s new wave, or "art pop" as they seem to call it. I'd put it in the same camp as that Steve McQueen album from Prefab Sprouts. Really, really loved "Glittering Prize." Favorite tracks: Glittering Prize, Someone Somewhere, Promised You a Miracle, Somebody Up There Likes You. Album art: It's so obviously designed to look like the hymnal books at church, I really love it. I'd never even thought of the idea of interpolating that art style. I still don't think it "fits" the music necessarily, but I think this one is super cool. 4/5
This is a very 80s sound. Daughter and I enjoyed it as background music.
I enjoy this sort of thing. Drama and all. Like the prominent bass. Perhaps it sticks out more in contrast to the synths than it would to the more common guitar centered rock sound? Elements sound balanced and clear. Reminds me of Roxy Music quite a bit. I also like when there's a single instrumental track on an album like here.
badass synth pop that must have sounded like the future in 1982 fav track: promised you a miracle
Pretty strong 80s vibes. New age and movie like soundtrack tunes
This one was fun. I liked quite a few of the songs and added them to some playlists. While it's not a favorite album, I think it's one I will return to.
6,5/10
Pretty groovy!
Haven't heard Someone Somewhere in a while, still great so surprised it does show up more on 80s radio stations. Ot quite enough to push the album up to 4
Enjoyed
kind of fun at first, repetitive after a while. decent, not great
5/10
Very 80’s. Interesting listen, although I don’t know if I’d revisit it. Rating: 6.5/10 Favorite Songs: hunter, hunted, promised you a miracle, new gold dream
Promised You a miracle
I had fun feeling like my parents listening to this, but I gotta say this decade is getting tired and as a society we gotta sit ourselves down and be honest that 80’s music just isn’t that good
This album warps the space time continuum. Makes 46 min feel like 90 min. Ground breaking. Maybe their minds aren’t so simple.
Ok
starts off strong then gets boring
It’s fine, easy to see why the Rolling Stones are remembered and they aren’t.
Wasn't into Simple Minds at the time but I did like this album at the time of its release. And I still like some of the tracks on it to this day. It does have quite a few classic pop tracks on it and at the time, I couldn't get enough of the closing instrumental track, not a radio favourite but it got me hooked. Somehow it sounds different these days but overall, the album has an undefinable something about it that stays with you. It's stripped down but enveloping.
Liked it. Very 80s
i'm biased (i love this style and era) but yeah there's sadly not a lot of memorable stuff in this album. really solid, nonetheless! i like to imagine these albums in the context of where the artist intended people to listen to them. if i was in an 80s club tweaking on blow, this would definitely be a 5/5.
Nice early 80s synthy pop. There really isn't much more to be said. I can't think of a reason people need to hear this before they die.
I like the music almost universally. The bass is awesome and they write good pop songs. The lyrics kinda suck. They don’t write any hooks and the vocals are kinda generic. Very processed and a lot of reverb makes the vocals sound very dated to the era. The reverb makes them sound like they were recorded in a cave. It’s just not a catchy pop record. It sounds more like alterno music of the 90’s or early 2000’s where the intention was to NOT be catchy - it makes it somewhat challenging to listen to and not think “art-rock”. It definitely reminds me of other bands like this (The Fall comes to mind...). Critics LOVE them. I don't care much for the style. It doesn’t suck and it’s worth a listen, but I won’t be coming back anytime soon.
As a teenager in Scotland I always resented how it seemed like your national duty to like Simple Minds. This album is a weird nexus of 80s sounds. I hear Mick Karn of Japan's bass playing, Simple Minds' own post-punk origins, pop keyboards of Scritti Politi and you can clearly hear its influence on U2's next couple of albums after War.
Started good . Then turned into jam session
5 disc album...over 4hrs long...definitely did not listen.
It always feels bad when an album starts off with points against it before I even know anything about it. I know people say not to judge a book by it's cover, but I cannot ignore how ugly the cover of New Gold Dream is. Although, I will say, to it's credit, upon seeing this I knew *exactly* what kind of album this is. In short, it's gothy synth pop. And honestly, it's pretty good. Although I don't think the "goth-yness" is that strongly wound into their DNA, at a lot if times, this is just synth pop. But still, the songs are strong, and the synths themselves are inspired and icy. The mix is a little weird, but it's mostly just an artifact of the time. This was enjoyable, but I don't have a ton to say about it, which may be indicative that New Gold Dream is a little more style than substance. But still, it is cool enough that it earns the low 3.
It's all pretty good!
3 / 5 Best: Promised You A Miracle Worst: King Is White And In The Crowd Weirdest: Somebody Up There Likes You Honorable Mentions: Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel, Big Sleep Not typically a big fan of 80s pop, but this one surprised me. Tracks 2-4 (Colours Fly, Promised You, Big Sleep, Somebody Up There) were the strongest - great mixture of styles with funky bass lines, disco-like synths, and reverb-washed guitars. The typical 80s pop aesthetic is maintained throughout, but I'm pleased with the variety of songwriting. I'll probably re-visit this one in the future.
#24 A prime example of 80s synth-pop, with some really good bass guitar work shining above everything else. The overall sound is pretty one-dimensional, which isn't surprising given the genre and age of it. I did like this more than I expected to. "Big Sleep" and "King Is White" are both highlights for me. Terrible album cover.
3/5 Favorite Song: Promised You A Miracle
Funket helt greit, men veldig forglemmelig plate. Sitter ikke igjen med noe.
Decent for the 80s, but sadly still from the 80s
The gnarly bass lines saved this one from two star mediocrity, elevating it to glorious three star mediocrity.
I can listen to it in the background.
About as 80s as you can imagine music wise. Very much of the time and any view about it is either positive because of some form of nostalgia be it real or imagined. Or Otherwise negative as it is just so dated. And I can’t actually decide, there’s the odd brat pack like nostalgic moment ( yes I know THAT song isn’t here) but there is also a swamp of 80s keyboard sounds and that all invasive electronic drum pad sound. That drum sound is front and centre and is the 1 thing that dates it the most for me, I stop hearing the songs and just hear that dull electronic thud, it's so distracting. But it's Very much represented it’s time, so yeah should be here though listening only really liked the hits, 3 stars
Do you really want to hurt me? I guess not, but I was groovin'. 3.
The early new wave is a sound. You hear the beginnings of what is to come, but nothing stood out for me. The synth sound is music to my ears
Simple Minds -- they did that song in Breakfast Club, right? So we have 80s new wave from Britain... an album praised by members of U2 and Depeche Mode. two of my favorite bands, and it features legendary jazz keyboardist Herbie Hancock on one of the tracks, this should be a slam dunk. So why am I not loving this? I think the songs on here are about 50% too long. And the length isn't from generating new ideas... it comes from repetition -- lots and lots of repetition... lots and LOTS of repetition. And repetition with little to no variation. It felt mind numbing at times. Promised You a Miracle is a standout track. And Hunter and the Hunted is up there -- this is the one featuring Herbie Hancock... but if you're going to have a performer like him, why is his keyboard so low in the mix? Beyond these two, I don't see myself coming back to this unless the mood hits me right.
Enjoyable new wave synth stuff. Didn’t catch that I new this group’s biggest hit until after the album, well, we all do. Had a good time listening to this but it’s not special, just sticks to what it does well. Multiple tracks could have been shorter. 1 listen Favorite Tracks: Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), Promised You A Miracle
eh
Decently catchy and a nice little atmosphere, not really anything that'll stick with me but that's new wave for ya
1001 moody 80s albums you could have happily died without hearing
I for some reason went into this listen expecting to find some cool, overlooked gem of pop music from the formative era of my childhood. What I found was nothing remarkable though. Not bad but seldom great. The sound is dated and doesn’t do anything impressive enough to transcend the shortcomings of the production. Also I never know if what I’m listening to is the original incarnation of the album’s track listing or some jumped up reissue with a b-sides and alt takes, but there seemed to be a lot of this album which exacerbated the tedium.
Fine but I don't really remember anything from it
Solid 80s
(3) you get your money’s worth! Four hours worth. I agree with David Fricke wrote for Rolling Stone, this album is manly “atmosphere for dreaming”. I will listen to this next time I need to find some rest. Atmosphere never seems to be a compliment, even though in college I thought it was a compliment.
6/10 - Light 3 but what an album cover. Looks like a stock background of a Methodist Church worship PowerPoint slide. Feels like the lyrics to Amazing Grace should be printed on it.
It's nice to listen to but there are only a few memorable songs, those being Someone Somewhere, Promised You a Miracle, and New Gold Dream. The rest aren't bad but it's just fine. 6/10
Old pop
I don't mind Simple Minds but I'm really all about the hits with 80s new wave. So this sounded fine but I'm more likely to put on a playlist of them than return to this.
I can hear a ton of other industrial / techno bands in this. Shame that pioneers often have others come after who are better, but it's the nature of the game. 3/5
man what a terrible album cover. the music is fine though
He does have a good voice but this album is just ok. Nothing great and to write home about.
I have heard better
More proof the 80s were the worst decade for music It’s alright but is this the best the 80s has to offer?
Some good jams, just way too long
This was fine. Was not super into this at the time or now but it had impact on the 80’s for sure.
Has the same effect on me now, as it did when released. The opening track and Promised You A Miracle remain the standouts. The rest of it is ok. Even though the band really started coming into their own on this release, I’m not sure this one should be on the list. Their ‘85 record Once Upon A Time is more deserving. Still, slick production, unique synth usage, and Kerr’s distinguished voice help this one stay afloat.
I should probably make myself some notes when I listen to a weekend album on Friday... cuz I don't remember anything about this album other than thinking it was pretty ok. 2.75/5
It’s okay! I liked some of the flanger lol
Not awful listening, not inspiring either.
Very 80s. Like, VERY 80s. Not bad, not great, enjoyable generally and a few songs are pretty catchy. Definitely a pop milestone album, even if it isn't really my jam.
A decent VERY 80s synth pop album. Pretty fun, kept it brief.
#GlasgowBand
Heavy 80s textures on this album. I like the bass lines. Some songs have a nice mood and build.
The most new wavey new wave that ever waved. Assumed they were just a one hit wonder act, so this was much better than expected. Very strange album art
Enjoyable and groovy, kinda reminds me of Breakfast Club. Great to have on while i worked the album took me on a journey
That album art is certainly a choice
So (early) 80s, so British (Scottish). Definitely takes me back to that time. I remember being somewhat tempted to own something by them. Or possibly briefly did, but then later sold it? On this album -- their breakthrough, I guess -- I count 3 good tracks, 6 not so good. The good ones (to me) are 1, 5, and 6. And 5 and 6, especially (1 is less good), do a good job of conveying an early 80s feel (in a good way). If only the rest of the album were at that level. So how do I rate this? It's between a 2 and a 3. I really do like tracks 5 and 6 quite a bit (maybe it's just 80s nostalgia?), so I'm tempted to give it a 3 based mostly on those 2 or 3 songs. So, yeah, I think I'll give it a 3 (but it's really a 2.51 rounded up). ;)
This was pretty cool, but got boring after a bit.
If you’re looking for typical 1980s music then this one’s for you. The UK group Simple Minds had a big hit with “Don’t You Forget About Me” in 1985, but I was unaware of them until then. This was an earlier album, which has good production value but the music is forgettable. I enjoyed the electronica style instrumental “Somebody Up There Likes You”.
More bad 80s album art! But an intriguing title. And at least "simple" is an adjective. I only know 'Don't You (Forget About Me)', which I like, and that song isn't on here. But these tracks are fine, though not particularly memorable. I might forget about them.
It's ok new wave
Favorite Track: Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)
Wasn't too familiar with Simple Minds before. The record itself is very 80s coded, but nothing special.
One of the most 80s albums I’ve ever heard. It’s solid but nothing incredible
I enjoyed the overall vibe of the album but found the songs a bit repetitive
I remember liking this band quite a bit, and yet, listening to this album now, it just doesn't do much for me.
alright, pretty nice
Thought I’d hate it but not bad
- This album has a few songs that I really enjoy (e.g., the opener and title tracks, especially) and that give me an early Depeche Mode feel, so I guess it's fitting that Dave Gahan loved this album. - That said, it also has a lot of songs that feel really dated in the production with those (very prevalent) wet sounding honking synths, flat drums, and bloated bass sound. - There are some good grooves in the baselines. - And, the singer's voice is nice and silky. - Really hate the cover, lol.
It was okay. Find Simple Minds to be a B level band with a few enjoyable songs.
I was previously familiar with Simple Minds but did not recognize anything from this album. This is pop/rock which sounds very much like the 1980s time period. It has some moments but overall it was just ok for me. I would listen again but would not be in any rush to do so.
I like Simple Minds, never loved them. This album was fine. I enjoyed the last 3-4 songs much more than the first few. Right down the middle. If I want to listen to this style of music, I'd rather listen to ABC.
most of the time, I just wish these new wave bands would ditch the synths. and all the damn reverb. (apologies to Herbie Hancock, who apparently appears on "Hunter and the Hunted"). on New Gold Dream, Simple Minds' lack of production clarity or identity as songwriters tends to do them in, even with the occasional standout like "Promised You a Miracle" or the title track. music that sounds like goop. strong 5/10.
Good but nothing special to me
Too much 80s recently
I'm usually a fan of New Wave, but this album was just alright. Nothing bad, nothing spectacular; it sits right in the middle. I won't be rushing to listen to more Simple Minds, but not mad I listened to this either. Tomorrow is Easter so the coverart is very in season. Favorite Track - Promised You a Miracle Least Favorite Track - Big Sleep ⭐️⭐️⭐️
80s charm, but falls flat
80s tastic
Pleasant. Favorite song: Somebody up there likes you. Good vibes all around.
Was nice and easy to listen to but also kind of forgettable.
Good album with nice sound and groove that made my day better listening to it while working. Best track was Promised You A Miracle.
its kinda giving duran duran
Was expecting worse to be honest. Definitely built for the stadiums. Highlights include "big sleep" and "new gold dream".
It hit the 80s vibe
airy and sorta fun
Very very 80s. Everything blended together and though it's good, it's just not that noteworthy to me. I like the 80s a lot and I like new-wave esque music and this was still just fine. The album art made me laugh though because it looks just like a Sunday school workbook I had growing up and I don't think they were going for that when they designed it.
There are some good songwriting here and there, but songs that I don't got are annoying. Still some nice moments that I've enjoyed. Could be 4 if Futurama song was on the album
Not my favorite thing, but it's fun to pretend you're living in a John Hughes movie.
lots of 80s going on (non-derogatory)
favorites: promised you a miracle; new gold dream; glittering prize
Hmmm. Lidt New Order, lidt Joy Division.
Middle of Road New Wave. A hit or too.
Kyllä tätä ihan kuunteli ⭐️⭐️⭐️
It was alright. I was expecting more of the bangers that Simple Minds have made, but none of them showed up here. The songs were good, but buying to get me hooked.
As a simple minded American, yes I only know their one song they've ever made from The Breakfast Club. But did our fellow simple minded Americans also know that Simple Minds made more music, that was much popular elsewhere a good amount of time? I sort of did. New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84) is seen as the Simple Minds' magnum opus of sorts, by the fans, critics, and the band themselves. Can it stand out from any other 80s new wave album? There's part to this album I like, the cheesy and very on point synths of the early 80s and some of the song structures. The other problems of this album is that it's just not very interesting. Some songs don't necessarily have climatic moments but just sort of the same sequenced synth beats over and over again for several minutes while the (quite lively and good) bass exists as the synths and vocals are trying to bury each other in the mix on the quest of which will sound the "lead" role of the song as the guitar kind of acts more as a rhythmic thing, which is neat. What's not neat is trying to hear the kick ass Herbie Hancock solo in Hunter and The Hunted while the singer's whaling is still louder than him in the mix but hey, probably sounds good on Dolby Atmos. I think the earlier Simple Minds are more worth their time because of the overt punk/post punk influence that gives the songs some BEAT to them. New Gold Dream (idk why the numbers are there) is so much of a new wave cliche that it doesn't sound fun. Take Rio by Duran Duran: that is the objective of what a new wave album ought to sound like. This is almost like Rio, if you were on just enough quaaludes to function at the strip club, or a walk on a beach at 3pm. I don't think this album ages well in the sonic department. The songs are at best fine and at worst they drag on a little too long. It's importance and significance isn't as held up compared to that big hit single that changed the band to make more of this sound and less of their earlier sound, for better and for worse. I don't know where the problem lies between the production and the execution of the songs because the band members sound fine and capable. There could be better selections for this list than trying to remind Americans that this band isn't a one hit wonder.
Some 80's-y pop, nothing hooked me but kinda nice.
Between the album cover and only knowing Don’t You Forget About Me, I didn’t think I was going to like this one. Surprisingly, it was pretty good.
Fine but not memorable.
Pretty standard 80s new wave with some inoffensive if unremarkable songs. Nothing too crazy, and easy enough to listen to. But probably not something I'd ever revisit. Top tracks: Somewhere Somewhere, Somebody Up There Likes You, Glittering Prize
Mostly a snooze fest, but the bass line on "Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel" is the best part of the album. "Glittering Prize" is cool, too. So for those reasons I'll give it a 2.5
Pretty good.
Hideous album art. Reminiscent of a lot of my 80s favorites like Tears for Fears and Talking Heads.
Helt kurant, ikke for meg da. 🧠🧠🧠
i like how every time i finished listening to a good album a mid album immidieately follows up. sometime there will be extremely good streaks of good albums but most of the time its just like this. anyway i like my synthpop upbeat and theatrical and more № 1 in Heaven or The Lexicon of Love like and theres only two to three songs that satisfies the criteria. 3.5/5
actually a very pleasant surprise! no shocker that with my third to last album, there had to be one final (i hope) British new wave album, but it is surprising that it's actually pretty good! kind of like watered down New Order, nothing I'll ever want to revisit but i at least didn't begrudge the time spent listening to it
This is an example of a likeable record that is almost a four, but not quite for some reason. There are a few cracking pop hooks on the record and sick bass lines, and it is definitely very listenable, but it doesn't have a certain je ne sais quoi that turns it from a good three star album to a great four star album. There have been a few albums on the generator like that.
liked jt
3, but a high 3. I enjoy new wave and this was pretty good!
I enjoyed listening to this, but I don't think it's one I'd rush to add to my collection.
Simple tunes for my simple mind
Not much to say, not my jam, but not bad
Okay, but uninspiring, slick 80s pop. My standout track was New Gold Dream which had a bit of a psychedelic vibe going on. The rest was quite forgettable.
I was never a New Wave fan. Too much focus on appearance, too much focus on dance, the same old low/not quite baritone vocals, and a favouring of bass guitar - the least important instrument in a rock band's line-up. What the best of the genre often got right was atmosphere. The use of keyboards and synth to generate a mood, and an instance on slowing the pace when necessary creates and evocative, nostalgic early 80s vibe which is difficult to recreate. For those of us who were there or experienced that era, this music has the innate ability to transport us back to a time of neon lights and throbbing mystery. This album contains the best and worst of the genre. It has the vibe and atmosphere, but it has the dull and yelping vocals sounding like the boring school kid with the pretend balls-dropped deep voice taking his turn to give a speech on soil erosion. Like much music from this period, it sounds both dated and of its time - dated in that sounds and tech and style have moved on, of its time in that you would never again have music that sounded like this again. There are no turds here, it's just decent music. But it's missing a banger, a standout song. And to have an instrumental song in a nine song album is almost unforgivable. So, it's fine. No peaks, no lows, just another album.
This is 80s pop/rock that if you were not there doesn't seem to age very well. Although the voice is still compelling and overall I like it.
Ok
I’ve heard better synth albums
3.0 Dont really care for the music too much, Bass player Derek Forbes lays down some wicked lines though. Watched a couple of videos of him, got some small, stubby fingers for being a hell of a bass player
Again didn't listen to all of it. They are ok not a great fan of Jim Kerrs voice but it's of the time
They're one of the better bands that sound exactly like this. This 80s stuff just isn't my cuppa. It's not their fault. They're decent at what they're doing, but it's not for me.
First song is my favourite. I wed to be watching Trainspoting, or at least walking down a wet cobble stone street in the up to truly appreciate this album.
Colours Fly and Catherine Wheel is a jam. And I can get down with Promised You A Miracle as well. Big Sleep has a Police-like feel to it. Really enjoy Glittering Prize -- reminds me of something I can't put a finger on right now. Though I enjoyed the front, I felt like this lost some steam through the back half. Not bad, per se, just losing focus. For me this toes a 3/4 line, but falls on the left side.
Pretty good, but kinda just came and went. No notes.
Pretty run of the mill 80s synth pop album which I would have sworn we have already had an album by this group before. Wasn't great but wasn't bad. Pretty much as 3 as possible.
Weird to have a Simple Minds album and it doesn't have Don't You Forget About Me on it. Had some moments but was overall too 80's sounding for me.
Yeah that's pretty good
niet onaardig maar niet echt mijn ding. Glittering Prize is wel n banger!
Feels like a bit of a mixed bag - the darker broody stuff rewards repeat listening while ‘Promised You A Miracle’ and ‘Glittering Prize’ point the way to the band they became but it doesn’t completely hold together, and some of it feels muddy.
Jim Kerr's vocals always had a preachy quality to them that somehow reminds me of Bono - which isn't necessarily a good thing. The music is par for the course for the era, but the songs just aren't there yet. Simple Mind's best known songs were yet to come. Meanwhile, this is 2.5/5.
I’m at a 3. Ultimately, it’s just fine. I don’t really feel like I have much to type about this album because it just never fully hooked me into what it was trying to do, or even really reveal what it wanted to say / do in the first place. These are inoffensive, occasionally catchy synthpop tunes, and it succeeds as a showcase of the style for the era. I think I just have more issues than notable positives here, but I don’t want to get overly negative about the album. It just disappointed me a lot more than I was expecting, based on the strength of their other big hits like “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” & “Alive & Kicking”. Those are tightly crafted synthpop tunes that feel closer to a Depeche Mode / Eurythmics style, whereas this feels like an undercooked Cocteau Twins album. I’m not opposed to the style if it’s done well, but this is… well, it’s just not done THAT well, sorry. I guess I do have stuff to say after all. My immediate first thing comes in the overall mixing; I think the vocal filter muddles the emotional tones meant to come out of Jim Kerr’s vocals. I know he has good vocals, because they do occasionally shine through the filtering / reverb here, but they’re not showcased in a way that helps to sell each track. Past that, I just think the instrumentals themselves aren’t super compelling, with many going for longer than they need to, overstaying their welcome, and suffering from that “first minute” syndrome I so often mention; when you can go from the first minute to the fourth minute and the soundscape feels EXACTLY the same, then your tracks just don’t have a good sense of progression, and I’m saddened to report that this album just doesn’t have that. I think it needs more structure behind it; surprisingly, I’m complaining about this album not having a typical verse / chorus / verse formula, but it really would’ve worked in its favor here. I wouldn’t be super mad about either of those if the lyrics had something more concrete to say, but this is where that “undercooked Cocteau Twins” comparison comes in; I don’t have a fucking clue what most of these songs are about, given that the lyrics just don’t feel very vivid, other than the loose moods / vibes they’re trying to evoke. I think the moods are achieved well, but just capturing a mood doesn’t do enough for me if the other aspects of a track are weak. It’s like going to a haunted house with the most eloquent decorations possible, but having all the ghosts be sock puppets. This album just fails to stick the landing on a lot of its tracks despite some really strong first impressions on them, & that persistent sense of being underwhelmed leaves an air of disappointment that slowly builds across the 46 minutes for this album’s runtime. Hence, a 3. A solid 3, but an unremarkable one that just doesn’t feel like it needs to be on the list. I’m sure there’s other great Simple Minds albums out there; maybe “Once Upon a Time” (with Alive & Kicking on it) would’ve been the more refined album to pick, but that might just be a copout with a popular track on it. I don’t HATE this album, but it just never picked up in its energy in a way that made me care about it. I’m just disappointed, that’s all. Sorry.
Pretty good, seems like the kind of music they would use in Stranger Things. I like it for what it is, but it's just not that interesting to me.
Nice to listen to in the background. Pleasant atmosphere, nothing really stood out to me
Ok only, very much of its time
This album may be historically important, but listening to it on its own, without that context, I find it hard to evaluate it objectively. I’ve never been particularly drawn to synth-led new wave, and that bias probably plays a big role here. What’s interesting is that I do enjoy electronic-driven music in other forms — something like The Prodigy works for me — so it’s not the use of synths itself. I’m not entirely sure why, but some kind of atmosphere or sense of its era clearly affects my taste.
Groovy as hell. I liked it but it is a little similar to more mainstream stuff (Bronski best, the Cure, a little U2). I may return to it.
Werid album name. Weirder Album Art. I had never heard of this band before. Some solid 80s vibes.
A second listen helped me appreciate a bit more as I leaned into the grooves, especially the keyboard usage.
I accidentally listened to it twice and still can't remember a thing about it
This may seem like a very dated synth pop album from the 80s - overly earnest vocals, cheesey synths and oodles of reverb. And yes, it is all of that, but there is something that makes this stand out from the crowd, and that is the top tier bass playing. It's really really good, even if the album is just a bit bleh.
Big fan of SM, Few great tracks, particularly the title track. But a lot of filler. Not their best work imho.
Inoffensively generic 80's music. The hits are fun and remind me of music my parents would toss on for long car rides. The misses are boring enough that it slips into your subconscious. Overall, a perfect representation of "2.5 stars" if I was able to rate it as such.
one of the most UK 80's sounding albums I've heard. It has all the hallmarks, mainly synth and dour lyrics with religious tones. Most of it washed over me but I noticed I still paid attention while going about my work, it kept my interest, and its actually composed fairly well. It just didnt stick out in any particular area though.
I had only ever heard "Don't You" prior to listening to this album. It's definitely a time and a place (tons of synth) but overall it does hold-up. The beats are catchy, and vocals are solid.
I was expecting to really enjoy it but I’m feeling surprisingly neutral about it. very bass-y album; really the defining elements are a trio of bass and synth and warbled scottish man voice. it doesn’t feel like music to be focussed on, not to be examined directly. This feels like a distillation of Eighties Pop but it’s not a distillation, it’s part of the foundation!
Way too long! Gets repetitive
So looooooong
Cover: religious theme from the font choice to the cross Music: - 80's sound - synthesizers - Somebody up there likes you: feels like a very long synth song, but it's only 5 minutes. - It's the 80s sound but it didn't catch my interest. Finished the album but won't listen to more from this band.
I liked the popness of it. Very new wave sounding.
Pretty cool sound but the songs are really toothless
I liked their earlier albums but never liked the material like this that brought them their moment in the sun
One of the interesting things about genres with an abundance of albums on this list is that hearing so many of them allows me to have a sort of hierarchy of albums within the genre in regards to my own personal feelings. Take new wave as an example. I would say that this album list has too many new-wave albums, most of which I've heard. This has allowed me to form the aforementioned hierarchy of new-wave albums. Remain in Light? S Tier. Peak music. Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret? D Tier. "Tainted Love" saves it from F Tier. That leaves a bunch of albums that fall somewhere in between the extremes, like, for instance, this one. New Gold Dream is a good album. I have no hesitations saying that. However, I would hesitate to call it much better than that. I don't have any major qualms with it, but it's not exactly a special album by any means. The music itself is certainly above-average. The bass especially is quite nice. Jim Kerr's vocals are solid. They're on the deeper side, which is a welcome change of pace. Some of the songs are pretty good. "Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)," "Promised You A Miracle," and the title track are particularly enjoyable. This is a respectable endeavor, and is far from the worst new-wave album of the list. However, I can't call it the best. It's like a B- or C+ Tier or something like that, which equates to about a High 3/5.
= the Beatles
Nah, not really my thing A bit dull
3.5. This was surprisingly good.
2.75. So I’ll round up
Very early British pop of the 80’s,
Early 80’s new wave
pretty cute
Rounding up for the glitter
Nicely produced, but other than that I can't say that I got a lot from most of these songs. The first one and the title track were really great though.
The most "okay" New Wave I've ever heard. Nothing bad, tho, so I guess I should give it a 3.
Didn't really stand out for me. It's decent, classic 80s pop where every song sounds pretty much the same and I can't understand half the words.
Rating: 7/10 Some lush New Wave goodness. I feel like a lot of these bands might be considered ‘singles bands’ and it kinda checks out here, the first track on each side with Someone Somewhere in Summertime and the title track are beautiful, with some other good tracks around them. Pretty decent stuff for a band coming off the Joy Division post-punk wave and being part of the turn of the 80’s synthpop sound in the UK
I used to listen to this mf a lot a few years ago so coming back felt pretty good. Someone Somewhere is a fucking siiiiick way to start an album, and Promised You A Miracle still bumps. Meshes together well but it's a lot more vibey and drawn out than I remember 6.7/10
Another 6 simple plans out of 10 lizard wizards
I guess they did other stuff than the Breakfast Club soundtrack. Not a bad little synth pop record.
Good album nothing special just ok
Pretty thoroughly enjoyable.
kerr's vocals are a pass from me, but there's so much good music here i can survive it
Some of this is a little boring but some of it is fun 80s synthpop
Favorite Songs: Someone Somewhere (In Summertime), Hunter and the Hunted, King Is White And In The Crowd Least Favorite Song: Somebody Up There Likes You (Instrumental) My first introduction to 80s synth-pop and I loved it. I found some of the tracks in the middle to be a bit boring, but the last two songs redeemed the whole album.
Okay, liked track one though vocal balance was odd on disc one. Not keen on the rest though see some appeal. Not a fan of the dude’s voice.
I liked it just didn’t need so much of it!
Unremarkable
Pretty damned decent for an 80s album. Not too synth, not too poppy -- I'd say it has aged pretty well.
By the numbers, but very relaxing this cold December morning.
I wanted to like it but I didn't
Interesting album took me a minute to get through. 5.1/10
Nostalgic sounding. Some of the keyboards reminded me of p/g keyboards.
Yes! I love this early/mid 80s sound. Fits this rainy morning perfectly. Someone Somewhere (the first track) far outshines the rest
I was telling my wife that as I progress through these 1001 albums, I’ve realized that my favorite era and genre is probably 80’s synthpop. I’m a baby from the 80’s, so perhaps it brings me back to preconsciousness or something. The 1001 generator must have overheard me. It said ‘hold my beer’ and then gave me the most 80’s album of the 80’s. I mean look at that album cover. Jesus. Literally. I don’t doubt that this probably deserves several listens to be appreciated. I trust Simple Minds enough that perhaps I’ll give them that benefit someday. But I don’t quite understand, after one listen, why this is revered. It seems almost there, so close, but not. The vocals are so damn subdued. Nothing stands out. It’s like a glaze of soft 80’s noises, and then it’s finished. Hmm, yes, I’ll need to come back to this….
a solid, gentle wave of synthy memories—nice enough, but not exactly essential listening unless you’re already in the mood
Like it 3/5
Definitely pretty good, gets too similar to all the other new wave stuff of this time period definitely some enjoyable songs on here
So this album took 4 hours of my life, and I’m going to ramble. Initially I looked at the 1970s rock album, with the shittiest cover art I’ve ever seen and was like fuck it we are all in we are going for it and getting the full 5 discs no bs listen. Well let me tell you there is a lot of BS but some Solid fucking gold too. Disc 1 - the basics, solid, good driving music I got to cruise around Florida on my bike on a sunny and 70s day and listen to a good chunk of it and you know what it was fucking hittin, the synth popy sounds matched the vibe and it felt like I was in a GTA trailer when in reality I’m just a fat dude who doesn’t use turn signals and was bobbing his head down 417. Disc 2 - headphones in doing admin stuff at work, if I have to hear one more version of Promised you a Miracle I might shoot someone. Maybe myself. Diaz 3 - driving home from work Theme for Great Cities made me go ooooooooooooooooo that opening hit okay I’m fucking back. Glittering prize still sucks tho. Disc 4 - in trance as mission? Okay I like a lil slappy opening. I’m fucking with it HEAVY remove the airy 70s slow lyrics and it’s a funky ass instrumental PROMISED YOU A MIRACLE Disc 5 - oh thank god I got another version of promised you a miracle. Nothing really notable on 5 skip it. In all seriousness though promised you a miracle is a funky song, and I love that dddundundun backing noise it’s such a fun driving song. This is another album that I think I would just like an instrumental version of so much, the instrumental versions of the songs were such good listens and I enjoyed them a lot. I’m not going to say it’s all worth a listen, it’s really not. But I’ll probably come back to a few of these songs when I’m roadtripping, or just want to hit triple digits on the bike and feel like I’m in TRON. Extremely mid album-but it’s got its time and place where it’s a fun listen.
I listened to this three times, just Disc 1. I didn’t like it much then I liked it a lot then I didn’t like it as much. The songs have blended in my head so specific callouts I’m not doing. I love synth pop so this album gets to ride to coattails of that genre but I imagine it had a bunch of influence over what I listen to today. I just prefer most of my new age stuff to this. Listen to the first 10 seconds of Promise You a Miracle on repeat. It feels like you’re trapped in a never ending fun house
Pre-Thoughts: - Idk shit about this, this is looking like its gonna be some mayonnaise bulllshiiiit. But im staying open and giving it a try. - There's absolutely no way im listening to all four hours of this comp. Doing the first disc and essential album only. During Thoughts: - I just know some british guy but this list together - Described as ambient dance music, which is kinda interesting. even the first track just feels like a relic. - As much as I kinda shit talked this I dont mind it. kinda groovy - Disclaimer: listening to the 2002 remaster. I feel like the mixing profile for this style is so different to what I normally listen to. My first instinct would be to call it thin but everything is well balanced enough. The layers are necessary because I feel like elements need something to back them up because of the sounds they picked. - Promised You A Miracle just hit me like a slap. Hell yeah - I love the lead synth in Big Sleep. - Getting on my level with Somebody Up There Likes You, cool instrumental interlude - I love the drum beat in the title track - Okay this is the first time since starting this list that I was reluctant going in and it actually has won me over. Im loving the second half. - Sometimes I like to think that this style of vocal is doing a Dracula impression and it makes it more fun. Post Thoughts: - A very strong second half, won me over from totally non-acknowledgment. I actually saved this album down for another listen because I think there's a time and a place and potential for me to like it more. - This is not my typical fare and I gotta be in a specific mood. It does have some great grooves, the extended jams maybe I could do without and vocals are hit or miss for me. Overall I was surprised this album had something to offer and happy that I was patient with it.
2.8 Disclaimer I only listened to disc 1! Enough fun synth, drums, bass, and guitar elements to make me enjoy it. If they removed the vocals I wouldn’t be mad. Sometimes sounded like the intro to an educational video from grade school
solid Scottish New Wave with some really great bass lines.
Clocking in at a little less than 4 and a half hours, this was a challenge to get through. That said, I definitely enjoyed it and had some favorites - always a big fan of 80s new wave. My favorites were: "Someone Somewhere (In Summertime) [Remastered 2002]," "Promised You a Miracle (Remastered 2002)," "Glittering Prize (Extended Theme)," "New Gold Dream (81/82/83/84) [Alternative Dream Version]," "Hunter and the Hunted (Alternative Take)," and "King Is White and In the Crowd (Monitor Mix)."
Helt grei 80-tallsmusikk. Intet mer eller mindre
The most “Ok” album I’ve heard. Impressively Ok as a matter of fact. Then again I’m not really a fan of pop so this album was kind of just lost on me I guess? I could definitely see this being someone’s favorite. For me though I can’t ever see myself coming back to this. Favorite Track: They all sound the same Worst Track: See the above 2.5 stars
Me guardo "Promised You a Miracle".
I wanted to forget but it wasn't there
Scottish New Wave, 80s. Very much of its time, synth pop.
Interesting album...there were some good songs...but some of them were pretty mid...so overall a middle of the road album.
An Album ain't 4+ hours lol
No idea why the extended version is so long. I thought this was fine.
I never really knew that I liked Simple Minds apart from their biggest hit, Don’t You (Forget about Me) but this is actually pretty good
If you, like I, are only familiar with the huge hits- Don’t You(forget about me), Alive and Kicking, Sanctify… you owe it to yourself to give this album a listen. Infectious 1980’s synth pop sound will transport you back in time to “the Breakfest Club”. Every song (except one)is really well crafted 80’s pop… the one track that to me seems like “filler” is “Somebody Up there Likes You”. I don’t say this because it’s an instrumental (I love instrumentals) but it is a 5 minute track that drones on and on and never goes anywhere… sounds more like an ad for the synth sounds than a song … for this reason 3 1/2 stars instead of 4.
I like this band’s singles Promised You a Miracle and Don’t You Forget About Me but never liked the band enough to buy even a greatest hits album. This was okay and listenable but it didn’t make me change my mind about delving into their back catalogue.
Another great new wave band I just never got into. This album may have changed that though, I love to get into bands way past their prime. Better late than never.
Ok but a bit samey.
