tripppy, but good
Some great songs on here
Really good, groovey, new wavey pop.
Good indie music. Fairly unique for a genre that can become monotonous.
this album was really good, cool chill indy music!
Good indie album, solid vibes throughout. Didn't feel like anything groundbreaking but was very enjoyable and comfortable.
Reminiscent of Orange Juice and Suede, with a dash of U2. Gorgeous songs, elegantly arranged. I wasn't entirely sold on the vocals at first, but they grow on you. Fave Songs: Two Dancers (ii), We Still Got the Taste Dancin' on Our Tongues, Two Dancers (i), Empty Nest, This Is Our Lot, Underbelly
Enjoyed that
Não conhecia a banda, gostei. Me lembrou Muse Melhor música: Empty Nest
This was my intro to Wild Beasts, the album was very enjoyable
Sort of a Bowie feel to some of it. It's alright. Don't think I'm very familiar, but it wasn't bad.
i really enjoyed this and it would have been a 5 but towards the end of it i was kind of bored and starting to think "this sounds too much like alt-j/imagine dragons/glass animals" but ill have to re-listen and reassess honestly. also ive never even heard of this band so im not sure why theyre on this list but hey it was good ... cant complain!
I had never heard of this band or artist before so it was, for me, a new discovery. I think the beauty of this album is in his voice, which has such an impressive range.
This album was my introduction to Wild Beasts. Beautiful music, very bespoke and pretty, the voice felt ornate. The music kind of exemplifies the Indy-rock of Josh’s generation that came after mine, I missed the boat on it, but would be jealous of lip pierced hipsters riding by on fixies out hipstering me and listening to music like this. The voice and delivery are enigmatic, maybe try hard or post modern sarcastic even? I hear a lot of Indy rock now that seems inspired by this. Listening to the songs by this band that played after the album, which were even more dynamic, maybe their best albums were yet to come? 4.
This was a real thighrubber of a good time. Wacky whaaa haaa
Pretty weird but pretty good. Surprised I’d never even heard of this band at all.
Enjoyed this, made me want to make a snowboard edit. Took me a few tracks to get used to the vocals, but once I did, I found it worked very will with rest of the music.
2009 best year for indie rock. I've listened to some Wild beasts but never a full album I don't believe. I really enjoyed this. Dude has a killer falsetto and there's a nice variety of instrumentals.
First time through, I was listening in the background and the falsetto vocals were a bit off-putting. Next time around I appreciated the nice melodies and eclectic arrangements. And the guitar that sounds like Edge at the end of “We Still Got the Taste Dancing on our Tongues”. And the gritty, down-and-out lyrics. You have to admire a band that really strives to sound different. I have some of their recent material, with more aggressive chunky beats. Those tracks obviously did a better job of catching my attention than these nuggets.
I... really dig this
Good indie rock album. They have a distinctive own style of music and fine songs.
british indie glass animals vibes. catchy!
Not all good, but mostly
4
Boring, nothing special. But not bad.
another album whose place on this list makes me wonder. It’s like if Glass Animals and As Tall as Lions had a supergroup, but didn’t channel either of those sounds as well as they did individually. It’s fine, but nothing stands out really.
Not very memorable, nor something I felt compelled to listen to again. Nothing about it was bad it just didn't hook me.
A bit edgy and different, but I kind of liked it.
pretty good! had a nice vibe to it but the singing didn't really do it for me, not bad but not what my brain wanted
Overall I liked this. It was nice background music. Sounded like a rainy day.
5/10
The fun powder plot - 3 Hooting & howling - 3 All the king's men - 2 When i'm sleepy - 2 We still got the taste dancin' on our tongues - 3 Two dancers (i) - 3 Two dancers (ii) - 3 This is our lot - 3 Underbelly - 2 Empty nest - 3
6/10 My kind of thing, spoilt by the theatrical singing. I remember liking All The King's Men, and that is a highlight still.
Overall: 2.98 (rounded to 3) Consistency: 2.91 Originality: 3 Enjoyment: 3 Virtuosity: 3 1. The Fun Powder Plot - 3 2. Hooting & Howling - 3 3. All the King's Men - 3 4. When I'm Sleepy... - 2 5. This is going to be a divisive one I bet. Either you're going to like his falsetto voice or you're going to absolutely hate it (and I'm guessing most will fall in the second camp). I tolerated it. Way worse offenders on this list of horrible voices. The music itself was fairly interesting. With a better lead singer, this band probably could have been really good and better known across the pond. 3/5
Strange album I feel like I should have been aware of but wasn't. Pretty great though.
Good thing I was already feeling like shit and I didn't want to tarnish one of the better albums in my queue, but this was not that bad. I've read the comments saying this is another pretentious album, and eh, I alreadyt heard worse of this kind here and I'm not even too ahead. If I were to hear this in one of those performative clothing shops or cafes, I wouldn't mind. But on this list eh, there are many worse. Thing is, I really like the intrumentals, but that singing is indeed weird. The songs I liked were Two Dancers i and especially ii and Empty Nest because there was another singer, but even Through The Iron Gate the other singer showed some real skill, so idk I guess they tried to be weird with this album. These songs save the rating, some golden nuggets in a landfill. It wouldn't surprise me if they would have better works but this page didn't choose them as I've seen in other cases.
Enjoyed the vibe but it could have been much much better. I’ll never look at booty calls the same way again
I kind of liked some of this, but it also kinda lost me at times. Good listen, though, overall.
Yeah kinda good, neat to hear some indie history.
There was nothing Wild about this. Literally don’t remember one song.
My 7th album in a row with a year ending in '9' ... spooky! I can't say off one listen whether I like this or not. Musically, there were aspects of it I did but the vocals were a bit all over the place. It didn't immediately grab me but I was drawn to moments, albeit fleetingly. I'd have to give this a more focussed listen which I probably won't do.
The vocals aside (I guess you get used to it eventually), this is a solid dream pop showing by the Wild Beasts.
I enjoyed it, would be more of a background album for me.
Was an ok album. Too much indie 2000’s for me.
I am really torn on this because I think in the right mood this is so up my alley, I would love this when I listened to it I found it kind of irritating but that feels more like a transitory reaction than a real reaction so for now I am giving it a three to split the difference between the two I am feeling and the hypothetical four I think I might give it otherwise. if you want rating rigor you are sadly in the wrong place
Sigh. This sounds pretty good for ‘00s indie but also smacks of its time. I might have been more into the rich music tones and orchestral dream pop at the time than I am now - right now it’s striking me as a little dated and unoriginal even if appealing in its way. Nothing especially struck me one way or the other.
Two Dancers is one of those records that gradually reveals itself to be far darker than its surface elegance first suggests. Initially it feels like stylish late-2000s art-indie - all atmosphere, texture and twitchy sensuality - but over the course of the album the emotional climate curdles into something much more disturbing: shame, coercion, masculine performance, emotional dependency and outright violence lurking beneath the moonlit eroticism. The “Two Dancers” suite in particular shifts the album into genuinely traumatic territory. Horror wrapped in ambient dream-pop. Once lines like “They passed me round them like a piece of meat” fully land, the entire record changes temperature. What impressed me most was the sense of place and social anthropology running through it. This is not metropolitan decadence. It sounds like intelligent, sensitive people from constrained northern environments trying to survive the “smash and grab of things going on” in local nightlife ecosystems - peacocking, intimidation, desire, shame and performance all happening simultaneously. The album understands masculinity as something acted out under observation. There’s a real sense of the socially browbeaten analysing the behaviour of the rougher, more physically confident world around them. That gives the record a psychological specificity that lifts it well above generic “arty indie”. The drumming deserves special mention. Absolutely superb throughout - fluid, physical, spacious, occasionally recalling an airier version of Budgie. The rhythm section often carries the emotional intelligence of the album more convincingly than the vocals do. In fact, one of my reservations about the record is that the songs sometimes feel almost “vocalist optional”. The atmosphere is so carefully constructed by the band that Hayden Thorpe’s performances occasionally feel more like behavioural overlays than the actual engine of the compositions. And that, ultimately, is where I slightly part company with the album. The subject matter is important and handled intelligently, but the songs often seem more interested in sustaining atmosphere than fully resolving into memorable melodic statements. They hover beautifully rather than arrive decisively. I kept feeling that the band stopped one polishing pass short of greatness - wary that too much compositional clarity might puncture the ambiguity and emotional fog they were cultivating. Compared with a dream-pop band like Cocteau Twins - who, for all their ethereal reputation, were often extremely focused structurally - Wild Beasts can occasionally feel diffuse. So my final reaction is one of strong respect rather than deep attachment. This is an authored, distinctive, psychologically rich record that absolutely deserved its Mercury nomination. You would never mistake it for anybody else. But while I admired it throughout and found parts of it genuinely haunting, I also found my attention wandering. A very good three-star album rather than a personal classic.
I imagine Jett Probably likes this
Boring monotonous. I did make it through the whole album hoping for something to improve. It never happened
Kinda mid indie rock. I’ve listened to a lot of indie rock and never heard of this band. There’s nothing here to really make it stand out or be memorable but it’s listenable
3.5/5
7/10 Kind of meh. Good musically, didn’t like his high pitched singing. I enjoyed the back half of the album, where he did that less, much more than the first few songs. Somewhat forgettable overall. Wouldn’t be mad at listening to it again, but I probably won’t put it on.
not sure of this some nice tunes somewhat spoiled by the vocals
Aight
Unsure what to think about this one. A lot of "rock that's weird just to be weird" , but also some stompers
Not sure why this is considered essential listening. Most of the times I think this it turns out that the band is British and that is once again the case here. I struggled with this once because musically, I did enjoy it. It had pleasant dream pop tones and was pretty well executed. It was the vocals that wore me down, at first I found it interesting but after a few tracks it just felt overly performative and grating. “And I’ll be left as dumbfound as a donkey, this is a booty call. My boot, my boot, my boot, my boot up your aresehole” dude, the fuck you talking about? Strong sounds made up for the vocal delivery and the lyrics that went with his weird ass delivery. 3 stars
Vibras relajadas
I actually quite liked this album and listened to it a few times. Nothing super special, but held my interest. Very much tweaking the 'Art Wank' gauge, but in a good way!
I didn't mind this as some background work music today - reminded me a little bit of a less good version of Alt-J. You know I'm a sucker for a bit of falsetto!
Beasts are are dancing twice upon my lizard ina fashion never seen before betwixt my cheeks
Liked it, very mellow, but nothing really stood out to me
Overall Rating - 2.86/5 (5.73/10). Everything sounded the same. It's not in any way memorable.
I wasn’t as offended by this as it seems like most reviewers were. Just pretty bland
Entertaining but not my choice.
Nothing special, it was fine.
when I lived in a hipster neighborhood for a year, I used to go to this hipster coffee shop down the street from me to study. I vividly remember sitting there studying while this grown woman set up her dolls and played with them on the table of a half-empty coffee shop with mismatched furniture and a barista who flicked her bean to correcting my pronunciation. Anyways I think this was playing on repeat. I sucked dick in that coffee shop once.
Hooting & Howling
Music was kinda great, but the vocals were legitimately off putting.
This was also better than i expected. Instrumentals are pretty nice
What a pleasant surprise! This is my first experience with Wild Beasts, blew me away. When it started I really enjoyed the music, but then the vocals started on the first song and it was a bit of a disappointment. Not a fan of that falsetto style and didn't seem to match with the music, but as I listened to more and more I could get passed that. There are some great dream pop electric indie tunes on the album. It has a Broken Bells, Grizzly Bear, M83 sound sprinkled with some extra dreamy U2 and old 80's English pop. And as I listened to the album through a few more times I could really lose myself in the whole thing, even the falsetto singing.
it had a flow to it that i’m not accustomed to listening to, but it wasn’t by any means unenjoyable. deep and enthralling. my favorite songs were this is our lot and underbelly
Another forgettable Brit alt rock band. Nothing bad about this. Just will never listen again.
masomenos, no me gusto tanto 6/10
Wasn't bad
Never really listened to this much at the time, but found myself enjoying it. The singer's voice maybe requires a little adapting to, but I think it works alongside the quite fun instrumentals on the record. Not sure if this would go in the regular rotation, but keen to check out more.
It’s cool i guess! Vocals are an acquired taste for sure. I like it but i don’t know if i’d come back to it.
Vokalen funker ikke for meg. Kunne sikkert ellers vært ei fin plate
Tuft
It’s an ok album not bad but nothing that gets me going for the album the songs are alright but I feel there are better bands that do similar sounds
This was fine not sure the significance of being on the list didn’t sound like a standout
Bit boring
It was pretty good. One of the first pieces of music around my era that I hadn't heard of. Has a great sound reminiscent of passion pit/ walkmen/ lcd sound system kind of vibes
Liked: Hooting & Howling, Two Dancers (i), This Is Our Lot, Empty Nest
Ok.
Hressandi plata.
Thoroughly unique with shades of the theatrical and bizarre. Each musician has a very singular approach to their instrument and the synthesis of these disparate voices makes for a sonic pastiche unlike anything I’ve heard. There are familiar songwriting ideas here but they are used only as a foil for the unusual sounds, chords and tones to play with like a pun. Ultimately it’s not extremely satisfying as a listening experience but marks for originality certainly.
I’m not sure what to make of this album. Sometimes there are cool parts, nice beats, guitar lines, etc. And then, not infrequently, the male singer uses a very high register and it’s very distracting if not unpleasant. Also, a lot of the record sounds like it was produced in the 80s. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.
I liked this a lot on first listen but after a couple more times, it kind of lost its luster and got less interesting. The lyrics and vocals were creative and intriguing, but the rest faded into the background a bit.
Good band name. Music is good Vocals….ahhhh not overly good. It’s the fake opera singer voice but then again it’s only 1 song. This is maybe a new age Pet Shop Boys. Maybe these guys are more in the realms of Erasure. You get what I’m saying though. This is gay club music. You couldn’t be assumed to be gay if you listen to this though. Listen away. It’s not bad and I’m as straight as you could get.
Not bad. I prefer the secondary singer to the lead singer: the lead sounds like he should be in a different genre, such as a musical or a gothic opera, whilst the other singer's voice reminded me of George Ezra. 'Empty Nest' was my favourite on the album.
Favorite Track: This is our Lot
Soft. Pleasant. New to me. Could use an up beat song in there somewhere.
As always with Wild Beasts I am on the edge of truly liking them. Perfectly good and nice to revisit after many years
Un peu planant, ça s'écoute bien
Sympa Un côté Kate bush
Assez sympa également !
‘twas good
fun
2010s indie really did have some of the best music under some of the worst vocals. A damn shame.
I quite liked this, but nothing really grabbed me and forced me to listen again. Maybe I'll give it another go at some point, but until then it's 3 stars for effort.
Great
Some songs do not flow as well as others. There are a couple of decent songs on here. Overall nice. 3/5
Good album. Some fun grooves. Certainly not something I would consider one of the thousand best.
I like the musical elements of this, but the vocals bring it down a bit for me.
This was actually quite an enjoyable record. There's a beat in most tracks that feels mesmerizing. Favourite Track(s): Two Dancers(ii), Empty Nest Least Favourite Track(s): When I'm Sleepy...
Talented singer, not my cup of tea but the music is alright
Yeah, this works. There were moments when I was really enjoying the instrumentals, then the vocals kicked in and the enjoyment plummeted. But the more I tuned it out and just took in the vibe, it was a good listen.
Never heard of this band or album, not even a song. It was a nice.
3 1/2 stars, good alt pop album
Listening as background music at work. Album finished and kept playing other albums by Wild Beasts. Not bad, nice for the office.
2000s indie rock. Theatrical vocals with loads of flourishes. A bit weird.
Thought this was an interesting album, it kept me listening. Wasn’t too fond of the vocals though
Cool start to the album. Sometimes I like a record full of hooky poppy structured songs, and sometimes I love an experience, and this right from the get go is giving me an experience. This has a nice sound, but it's not for me. I can totally get why people would like this but there's something about the vocal performances that keep me at a bit of a distance from the sound. I'm getting a little bit of "The Antlers" sort of vibe, which is also one that I appreciate and want to like, but just doesn't really gel with me. Nice listen. I think repeated listens would be the way to get it to stick more to me. There's certainly a lot of good things about the record, and sometimes I was hearing a vocal part that I actually thought was super impressive, but on a whole it just wasn't a fit for me.
A complete unknown to me - not quite my thing but interesting enough to warrant a couple of listens
At first the falsetto vocals seemed a but annoying, but later it resolved into a familiar, albeit a bit boring in the modern context, indie sound. Enjoyable, but not the most interesting for me right now. 3/5
Couldn't really decide on this album. On the one side somehow interesting, wanting me to listen more. But then parts, which I really dislike. A overall picture … to tell the truth, I'm not sure!
The only way to really rate this album is just to say this was like an experimental art exhibit at an art gallery you saw on a whim because you had nothing better to do that day and can't really express your feelings on how the experience was due to how abstract it all was. It left you content, but slightly bothered that there is no other way to express how it made you all feel.
Meh
3.1 1x
I quite enjoyed the experimental nature of this album. On my second listen through I paid less attention and just let the mood wash over me and enjoyed it more. 3 stars. Fave track - hooting and howling.
Bit weird, not really my thing. Though the intro to the opening track did seem promising at first. Not a terrible album though
Feel like I could’ve really liked this. In the end it was just okay. Simpsons: No
All the King’s Men is always playing at my gym so it’s nice to put a band to the song. This was fine, not really my thing and definitely of its time. Sparse and slightly eerie sound. Hooting and Howling was my fave. High 3.
Happy 1000! Though this album is not what I would have chosen to celebrate with I liked this more than I expected to. I wonder if they were influenced by U2 as I get a similar vibe from the grandiosity of the vocals and the sound of the instrumentation.
Indie rock I could stand listening to!
It's definitely music. I don't hate it.
it was nice for background music but i couldn’t get into it, personal thing but the album cover rlly unsettled me 7/10
Their sound is unique. Good indie.
Parhaat: Two Dancers (i), Two Dancers (ii), This Is Our Lot
Dull and offensive
It's not bad. Kind of like a local natives kinda thing that sounds good for awhile and at it's time but work best in small doses.
Arty and atmospheric.
This is another album I enjoyed on my second listen. The guitar-forward tracks were more interesting to my that the synth-forward tracks. The is no doubt that both songs are very talented and that is the biggest strength of this music. I liked it, it just didn't kick me in the ass.
This album was a fun listen it felt like I was listening a psychedelic tinged ‘indie sleaze’ band. The tracks I took a liking too where ‘When I’m Sleepy’ and ‘Fundpower Plot’. I don’t really have a proper opinion on the latter half of the album because I need to re-listen. - (6.01.26) GEMV
Need to listen more
Ok - another new one to me…. Right up my street from the start. Kind of a modern day Sparks…vocals are a bit all over the place though! Definitely going to listen again. 3
Synthy as hell. Honestly surprised this was actually part of the books and not a fan addition. It wasn't bad, but it does leave me wanting for a better synthesis of 80's synth-wave and 2000's indie pop. Vocals were cool until I turned them up.
I recognize this is kinda good and represents something of a movement within indie rock of the time period, but it's just not for me. The songs the main guy sings are better written, but I like the other guy's voice better.
Not my thing.
Really enjoyed the music. The lyrics are a little problematic on several songs.
When it comes to anything released after 2002, I swear the people who made this list are super out of touch. Here is a tip for anyone who may be starting this list: if you get an band you don't recognize the name and the album came out after 2000, it is going to be the most mid album ever and you will forget you listened to it in a week (especially if it is British). Anyways this album is ok, but I could see myself actually really enjoying this one if they got anyone else to sing. I really like the instrumentals, but this sing sucks out any would be enjoyment. Low 3.
Solid Indie Rock album. There’s a falsetto vocal presentation in some songs that I don’t particularly like, but even those songs are good otherwise. Notable tracks include Hooting & Howling, All The King’s Men, Two Dancers, This Is Our Lot, Empty Nest, Through the Iron Gate.
Really loving this album right from song one, throughout the entire album. Great music to just put on in the background while you’re puttering around. It’s got the chill, melodic vibes, with a cool indie feel as well. Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: if I found it I might Favourite Song: Empty Nest
It improved around the point it started sounding like The National ~track 5/6
Musically it's great, but I have a bit of a hard time with warbly vocals so couldn't really get into it
A pleasant enough listen but couldn’t get past the feeling that they’re trying to be too clever
If Everything Everything are a poor man's Radiohead, this is a poor man's Everything Everything. I quite like All The King's Men though and I'd give this a 7 if marks were out of 10..
The synth is plesant, and the lower vocals are very fine, but the falsetto is not to my taste. 3/5
This is like proto-Glass Animals, especially their early sound. It actually freaks me out how much the one vocalist (Hayden Thorpe) sounds like Dave from GA. Very minimalist sound and I graduated high school in 2013 so the late 00's/early 10's indie sound is firmly in my ears. I really like this, it's nothing insanely groovy or groundbreaking but I find this kind of music really soothing. Great for a chill evening or staring out the window on a plane. Reminds me of younger days, hiking, driving. This isn't my new favorite record but maybe I'll remember it again one day and spin it for some generalized nostalgia. Feels like an auditory warm hug from a band I'd never heard of before today.
This feels very 2009. It feels like something that someone had on their iTunes and was really really jazzed about. Then I’d get it on my iPod and be jazzed about it, and then give it to other people because this is “really good,” but in reality I probably only listen to it a few times or when I’m hanging out with girls and want to seem cultured. It’s fine. Kinda cool, kinda boring.
Some nice complexity and overall mood.
The songs have potential, I find the mixing throws the songs off. The vocals trampled the music at times. It was a nice enough headphones listen, but it all started to blend together after the first 3 songs.
Well worth a listen, but need more time to fully appreciate this band as there is a lot going on. Reminded me of Talking Heads, which is a huge compliment.
I really liked the music.. and then they started singing and I liked it less.
Okay Indie album
Part of indie scene of early 2000s, Particular vocals of Thorpe, falsetto style. Occasionally eminds of Sparks in theatricality. Musically find this style dull but it has it's moments. Lirically nothing special. Highlight: underbelly. Not my cup of tea. It lacks an edge.
Interesting. Part Sparks, part Elbow, part post-rock. Enjoyed it.
I know I’m the outlier on this one, but I quite enjoyed the expressive vocals and how they paired with the dreamy instrumentation. This is far more interesting than some other very safe and boring records on this list. There’s a boldness that I really appreciate in this record. The two vocalists pair nicely and create a nice juxtaposition that keeps the record interesting.
That's not my taste in music - But ok
𝘛𝘸𝘰 𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘴 is a sleek, shimmering piece of art-pop that feels both sensual and feral, built around tightly interlocked guitars, soft percussion and a kind of nocturnal elegance. The element that will make or break this album for most listeners is Hayden Thorpe’s dramatic countertenor — airy, theatrical, and constantly on the edge of falsetto. For some people that voice is an instant deal-breaker; for me it isn’t, and it actually adds personality and strangeness to music that might otherwise feel too polished. That said, the record doesn’t always land with the weight it seems to promise. The atmosphere is consistent to a fault, and several tracks blur together rather than stand apart. It’s a beautiful listen, but often more mood than revelation. A distinctive and memorable album, just not an essential one — interesting, stylish, and occasionally excellent, but not a masterpiece.
Although I like a unique voice, the theatricality of his singing was hard to take seriously as it didn’t seem to match the tone of the music at times.
this was interesting. not great. kind of felt like they were trying to walk a tightrope between harder rocking indie and easy listening background tunes. and i’m not sure it worked super well. it wasn’t blasphemous but it wasn’t for me
I like to think I'm pretty accepting of unique voices (given that I love Radiohead, The Mountain Goats, Neil Young, Elliott Smith, etc), but I couldn't get used to the goth Tiny Tim vibes here. Too much falsetto, too much vibrato. I liked the non-vocal components, so we're averaging it to a 3.
Pretty solid! Cool first “modern” era album, liked some songs. A very 3 star album.
User, and Lady Gaga.
I liked the intro of the first track. That's as good as it gets. No-one knows why "Two Dancers" made it on the list. It's too average to be a must listen. At least "Two Dancers" isn't as bad as others say. 3 stars for "Two Dancers".
This was alright - mostly just made me want to listen to Hercules and the Love Affair
The music was good. The singing, I'm not even sure. It was like Tiny Tim in some sort of awful musical you just wanted to move on to the next song, except the next song was just the same familiar pain. And then all of a sudden someone sang like a human being, and that was nice. And then more Tiny Tim. When Amazon Music moved on to play something it seemed similar, it was not especially similar, and it was immediately clear my pain had ended.
Wears its influences on its sleeves but doesn’t rise above to much effect. I like the vocals but I never got into this one back in the day and it doesn’t do much for me with a relisten.
Not bad. Much better than expected
Ok
Melody is decent
No to the vocals. OK to the music.
noise in da background baby 3
Still only 3, but at least the voice was weird enough to be interesting. This one I might actually remember.
Me he guardado "The fun powder plots" y "All the king's men".
Surprisingly interesting: Blackstar Bowie meets Glass Animals
Another sort of modern entry, a band I have never heard from 2000s. Musically dull, hard to imagine there isn't better albums that could be picked from this time. Lyrically does offer a bit more interest. 2.5 rounded up Heard before? No Owned: No 20/1001, 20/82 (24%) Will I get? No
Has its charms
Hooting and Howling? More like Hooting and Hollering... This was decent but didn't really stand out.
Highlight Song/s: The Fun Powder Plot This is a really frosty album, my teeth are shivering. A lot more ambient than I was expecting when I saw on Wikipedia it was labelled dream pop. I was going to say I enjoyed the female vocals on the first track and the next few, but the male vocals not so much. But they don't have a female vocalist or band member... Well hats off to the amazing androgynous singing. The main theme of This Is Our Lot suspiciously sounds like the main theme of Lullaby by The Cure. No doubt these guys were inspired by The Cure. The droning, the length of each part of the main theme, ITS LITERALLY ALL THERE.
Again, I'd probably like this more if I listened to it more. But not that much more. Not really my vibe, man.
The vocals took out of this one. Shame too because I enjoyed a lot of the instrumental. Two dancers were both decent tracks overall.
ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 2.5
Back on this after 2 months. Initially bounced off this album due to burnout, but at second glance I enjoyed it more. Some songs I did think stood out but overall this is indicative of an era of 2000's UK music that I just never really gelled with.
Pero The Xx, Animal Collective, The Flaming Lips, The Raveonettes, The Pains or being Pure at Heart, e incluso veteranos como Prefab Sprout, Yo la Tengo o Pet Shop Boys, lo hicieron mucho mejor.
Interesting. Surprised never heard of them. Would listen again. But not heavy rotation or desert island.
Vocals aren't my favorite, but not that bad. Pretty good for a late-aughts indie album. Reminds me my days living in war-torn Portland.
When I hear the phrase “nominated for the Mercury Prize” I usually brace myself for something a bit pretentious—but Two Dancers by Wild Beasts turned out to be far better than that. I had never listened to Wild Beasts before today, but their sound immediately felt familiar—somewhere between MGMT and Arcade Fire, with a distinctive twist of their own. The songs are catchy, the vocals really stand out, and the whole record feels like a strong, well-crafted indie album that I’d happily return to. Favourite track: Through the Iron Gate and Hooting and Howling really stood out. Least favourite track: A few songs blended together a bit, but there wasn’t anything I didn’t enjoy. Album artwork: A cool and fitting cover that matches the album’s vibe.
79% Best: The Fun Powder Plot; We Still Got The Taste Dancin' On Our Tongues; Two Dancers (i); This Is Our Lot Must-Hear? Almost
I liked I little bit of this, wasn't enthusiastic listening, but was a little bit interesting. Something new is always good. Made me a little sad though.
Decent vibes in my opinion, not much I’d revisit but it was a good one-time listen for a band I’ve never heard of before.
alright indie
honestly wild that I've listened to Boy King SO many times since like... 2018? 2017? I found it right before they announced their breakup. and yet I never checked out their other music. I did enjoy this one.
I bet I would have been way into this if I was listening to it when it came out.
Ayy, another contempo album. There's a simple joy to landing on a 16-year-old album, especially when I've been inundated with oldie stuff for the past few listens. I've never heard of Wild Beasts, though I'd wager to guess that I'm in for an electronic affair just going off that album cover. Nope, indie rock. I quite enjoyed this, truth be told. The album has a sleek, polished sound, and the vocals work quite nicely, too. There isn't much for me to sink my teeth into as far as the "craft" of this album is concerned (it's very similar to other indie acts from this time), though the unusual vocal style goes a long way in giving this album it's own identity. "The Fun Powder Plot" is a solid opener. I enjoy that percussion and the soft electric guitars, though the vocals are the real showstopper. They're pretty great. Very unique and unusual. I enjoy the way they oscillate between highs and lows. WSGTTDOOT has some pretty sublime guitars, and I enjoy the heavy background ambience, too. The vocals near the end are also pretty great. Title Track Part 1 is a good follow-up for much the same reasons as the previous track. An overall gripping atmosphere, and the more strait-laced vocal delivery is pretty neat, too. Title Track Part 2 is an interesting pivot, with more of the beautiful atmosphere that I enjoy. The fragility of the lead guitar is hypnotic, and I enjoy how the rest of the instrumental sounds like it's revolving around that one riff. Sadly, I can't consult my 2005 edition of the book for why this is in here, so I guess I'll just mosey on down to Wikipedia. Well-received by critics and the band's best selling album. There isn't much in the way of fanfare or influence, though I'm willing to overlook that. I don't think this album is must-hear material, though I think it fills the niche of a contemporary indie rock album quite well.
4 for music 2 for vocals
A groovy album that I didn’t mind. Guys voice took a bit of getting used to.
Pretty good actually - reminded me of college era indie
One of the better CSNY albums
Likes it but it got old towards the end
Pretty decent, I was fairly interested most of the time
Kind of weird. In a good way, I think? I liked All the Kings Men, Two Dancers (I), and Empty Nest. The rest was ok.
Musically I quite liked it but the dude's voice just drove me nuts. If he hadn't sung like he did for the entire album, this would be getting a 4.
Quite interesting and varied music. But that one singer’s falsetto is ruining the first half of the album
A really nice indie rock album with some great guitar work. Not much more to say.
Interesting. Musically it was enticing, but sometimes the vocals were way out. I like "Two Dancers (i)" and maybe "All The King's Men", not much else. Was alright though.
All the King’s Men“. Dennoch wirkt das Album stellenweise zu verkopft und verliert sich in seiner eigenen Ästhetik.
Decent background of artsy rock music. No song stuck in mind. Didn't finish the whole album
I thought it was okay. I’m not usually into indie bands, but a few hooks caught my attention. The vocalist seemed to be trying a bit too hard to channel David Bowie, and the chord progressions felt generic. Still, their playful use of percussion added some much-needed life to the music.
Cool vibe but weird voices. Backend of the album is much better than the beginning
I think I could get into these guys if I can just figure out what to do with those vocals.
The late 00's had a distinctive sound, great high water mark for the indie scene. This isn't the best of it, tho. Nothing terrible but not a top 1000 album of all time. Better than a lot of the boomer slop that is all over this list but that's a low bar.
Fascinating Vocals and some good songs, but that's it
On the one hand, the music is pretty great; really interesting and very dreamy. The vocals however, are AWFUL. And not just bad, but bad AND don't seem to complement the music so much as distract from it. Would love to hear someone strip this down into an instrumental album.
De beats zijn nice, beetje house achtig. This is our lot is mn favoriet
5/10… indie pop
Who's going to tell all those one star reviews freaked out by the voice about Sparks? How will they cope? Anyway, I quite liked this even if it struggled to stick.
One of those albums that I would absolutely love if it wasn't for the vocal delivery. I find it extremely grating. The music is wonderful though. 3/5
Another album and band that I was unaware of, and I made the mistake of looking at the other reviews. Oh dear. I was expecting the worst. Actually listen to it .... It wasn't that bad. Some high pitched vocals (reminded me of Geneva (the band, not the city) and the album creaked with pretension, but .... generally midling. At a friends BBQ, if this came on, I'm just carry on drinking and eating. and quietly judge the friend for his pretentiousness,
Sans grand intérêt.
Not what I was expecting. I liked the unique sound. It reminded me of the music my dad listens to. I think my fave was All The King’s Men but to be fair I wasn’t paying a ton of attention bc I kinda got bored/distracted.
I will not remember this album in a week.
Seems cool but not really enthralling for me, a little too chill and a little too intentionally weird. Probably amazing while high.
This would be a 3.5 if given the choice. Lots of very weird fun cool stuff in this album, I don't think it quite makes my regular rotation but I found myself really enjoying a lot of it.
I really wanted this to be a 4. I feel there is a 4 star album in here, but every time I was really vibing they would do something silly. Hooting and Howling is legendarily bad and I can't believe that was their single. The less said about When I'm Sleepy, the better. But I could see myself listening to this again a few months later and bumping it up.
Interesting. A new album I haven't listened to yet. No idea why it really made the list though after giving it a listen. Great for the background and overall was good. But nothing stood out or was great.
Fine. It was interesting background music. Probably one that I need to spend a few more days with to appreciate more.
Arctic Monkeys if they were born with depression instead of developing it as adolescents
An album that was somewhat easy to listen to, but there is nothing thrilling here or any reason (that I can hear) that warrants it's inclusion on the list. Drone-like at times and sometimes Smith-esque dreaminess, but don't read too much into that because they are not in the same league as the Smiths. Not very interesting and I probably won't be buying any Wild Beast albums anytime soon, but it killed time in a not so horrible way.
Maybe one day I could love them as much as The Smiths or XTC. Not bad but nothing jaw dropping
Tfw the actually interesting instrumentals get bogged down by Tiny Tim moaning in my ear 😔
This album was probably pretty cool in 2009, now there’s a hundred bands doing this exact shoegaze-indie sound. Decent album, didn’t blow me away.
No easy listening. Would at least need a few listens to potentially stand out.
Notable favourites from the album: All the Kings Men, Two Dancers (ii), This Is Our Lot, Through the Iron Gate. Interesting album and not something I would normally pick to listen to although I really enjoyed it. Was nice to listen to something that I had not heard before. Some notable great riffs, especially in This Is Our Lot. I found the vocals a bit much at times during my listen, but still can appreciate that they are brilliant. 7/10 - solid album but knowing my own interests, its likely to be a forgettable album in the journey
The music is great. The vocals are a complete mismatch for it. This needs some real chillwavey singing, not this falsetto garbage.
3.5/5
Beautiful music, moderate voices
Am a fan of Wild Beasts and although this isn't my favourite of theirs, it is a good album. 3.5
Certainly intriguing. I have to accept the steady rhythms and the joyfully aggressive wordplay. Not normally my tea service, but enjoying these steady sips. A strange (to me, at least) foray into the oddest of constructions--synth mixed with drums mixed with guitar, each on its own on the playground but getting along well. I know I'll be re-listening, because or despite the bolt shot through my head.
The music was often compelling, and the lyrics, when I could understand them, were often quite dark. But it's hard not to be distracted by the vocals. Sometimes it worked, though I can't help but feel that this is yet another album that's on here thanks to the British slant of this list.
3/5
I didn't mind the singing on this and I've heard worse Indie music. But like most Indie music it just sort of sits there. Happening at me.
Favorite Track: All The King’s Men
The Fun Powder Plot, I like this song because it has that beat in the first part. Hooting & Howling I like this song because I can hear the beat and some drums.
Nowt special
6,5/10 Highlights When I'm Sleepy
I really enjoyed this. Always great to hear an 'indie' album that breaks the mould - this avoids rockists tendencies or layers of quirky electronics, focusing on the performance and that voice. The pace changes nicely throughout too. Am not sure if I like the main vocalist here, but I certainly admire their uniqueness. One to revisit.
This was a lot more soulful and sensitive than I was expecting. For some reason I always thought Wild Beasts were horrid BritRock. Apparently not. There's so much depth and layers to these songs. They drift off a little at tangents, but there's a strong feeling of tranquility throughout. Decent.
heard this prior to using this generator to get through the 1001 albums list. i'll give it a proper rating The Fun Powder Plot - 2/5 Hooting & Howling - 3/5 All the King's Men - 5/5 When I'm Sleepy - 3/5 We Still Got the Taste Dancin' on Our Tongues - 4/5 Two Dancers (i) - 3/5 Two Dancers (ii) - 3/5 This Is Our Lot - 3/5 Underbelly - 3/5 Empty Nest - 3/5 Through the Iron Gate - 2/5 Average score: 3.1/5 hmmm. where do i begin? i'm feeling 50/50 on the vocal performance. i wouldn't say i hated it, but i didn't love it either. the singer's performance was beautiful at times and comical in others, but i've certainly heard stranger. what are some of these lyrics though?? many of these songs are nonsensical to the point of being distracting at times whatever story the artist is trying to paint with his performance isn't clear at all whatsoever. it's music, sure, but it's also a lyrical clusterfuck
Music was fine, vocals are cursed
Beginning and ending were good; sagged in the middle
un poco repetitivo pero estuvo bien
Yea i mean, fine. Good music with way to much falsetto yodeling in the background. Temper Trap did this better at a similar time. I'll put this in the Bjork and Rush School of Music Id Like to Hear Sung By Someone Else.
Never heard of them! I dig the intro song and the music, it's oddly familiar. It's all enjoyable music. Nothing stands out, nothing is groundbreaking though. No hits, a solid # of listens across the 10 tracks, and a good collection of songs but not T1001 worthy. Favorite track "The Fun Powder Plot", and I love the song title. Their album "Present Tense" is a ton more popular so I gave it a try too. 3 stars for this one, nothing earth shattering or memorable.
This album demonstrated the more creative and exploratory side of 2000s indie. There are a lot of interesting stylings and sounds on this album. I was genuinely intrigued and unsure of what to expect from track to track, and they did a good job keeping things fresh, which is something that dream pop and dream pop adjacent acts aren't always good at. Not making every track incredibly dream poppy and making sure to utilize an array of different sounds to keep things unique went a LONG way with this album! I won't say that I LOVED this album, and I'm certainly not convinced of its need to be on this project, but I was surprised how much I actually generally enjoyed it. Many people on this project seem to just despise dream pop and adjacent stuff in general, but I am typically just looking for something that mixes up the pace -- and this album did that, while staying true to its genre.
Different, enjoyed it
The music was cool, dark and brooding but I found myself annoyed by the singer’s falsetto. I’d listen again though.
Track 3 Wonderful music but awful high voice.....
Not very wild beasts. Pleasant enough, inoffensive, not hugely memorable after two listens.
Enjoyed.
The type of perfectly fine landfill indie album that feels destined to be forgotten in the depths of Sirius XMU playlogs and long-abandoned, soon-to-expire music blogs.
This isn’t bad but it’s not for me. The vocals get old. Idk I guarantee there are 1001 albums better than this - feels like some nostalgic shit for the author.
Soma classic indie rock/pop. I liked the beats in the beginning of the album. Didn’t like the second half as much. Too slow. The singers voice is half decent but sounds a little bit like an opera singer which isn’t my favorite. They sound like they influenced Glass Animals.
Good, not super interesting but fine for the background
I’m not usually a fan of falsetto vocals on a record, but there was a point that this one won me round, and that was when they started singing about girls from Shipley. Apparently Wild Beasts were originally from Kendall, but are now based in Leeds so that counts as just about local to me. The music also grew on me too, rapidly promoting this band to a solid contender for a Saturday afternoon at a music festival on a sunny day slot.
6/10 - There were some decent parts and some mid parts.
Now there is an interesting one. New sounds, very original.
A bit more interesting than just generic pop, but the voice can be a little over the top for me.
Technically well-made but it didn’t stick with me; I’ll revisit and see if anything sticks with me further in the future.
Enjoyable but not memorable imo
Enjoyed a lot, some lyrics and vocals were a bit grating but 3! Favs: The fun powder plot Hooting and howling All the king’s men This is our lot - stand out !
Shoegaze and ambient. Thoughtful instrumentation coupled with good mastering and fidelity. Sounds like many other bands of the era, washed out and ethereal. Like a b rate Alt-J. I enjoyed the whimsy and didn’t really find aggravation with the singing like others. It was just overall solid and ok.
It’s a bit peculiar, but overall not a bad sound. It just seems to be trying too hard.
Instrumental is great but vocals sometimes didn't feel serious at all and didn't match the vibe
To me a pretty typical indie record from the 2000s. It was middle of the road to me. There's definitely better indie records from that era.
The music itself was pretty good and I was super optimistic when the first track started, but I feel like the vocals did more harm than good here. Disappointing, because there are lots of elements that I like. Favorites: Two Dancers (i), (ii)
