Reviews (page 4 of 7)
The music itself was pretty good and I was super optimistic when the first track started, but I feel like the vocals did more harm than good here. Disappointing, because there are lots of elements that I like. Favorites: Two Dancers (i), (ii)
meh
Fairly enjoyable, but nothing stood out to me.
The average rating for this bad me worried. For the most part I liked it. But I think I’ll need to listen again to fully review it. The one thing I’ll agree with is that many of the lyrics are pretty cheesy. 3/5
Je n’ai pas l’impression d’avoir entendu quoi que ce soit que je n’avais jamais entendu avant. Male tears much
what the hell, sure. good background music for reading, the instrumentals (especially the drums and that awesome spacey guitar) really dug those! blended together a lot for me though which was great for reading but I am not sure if that’s something i do or do not enjoy overall. the fun powder plot is good.
Great album, will listen to again
6/10
I like this! Would listen again.
- Never heard of Wild Beasts; get the impression they made little impact in the States. - Percussion is top notch...explosive and all over the place with the rhythms. - Two lead vocalists. Like Tom Fleming. Unfortunately, Hayden Thorpe (who is on the majority of the tracks) is doing way too much and I find his performance grating. - Largely fine.
Some rather odd 2000s post-punk. Really angular guitar melodies. And bizarre falsetto vocals. I can picture a lot of people disliking this, but I actually found it entrancing at times. Not altogether bad. Fav tracks: The Fun Powder Plot, All the King's Men, We Still Got the Taste Dancin' On Our Tongues
★★½
It didn't impress me much, but it's not bad. 3 stars.
The instrumentals on this are great but the vocals are abundantly meh
They have the electronic dance rock feel of Metronomy or Foals, and when done well I like this genre. Wild Beasts also add a lot of slower ambience to their tracks, sort of Eno meets Metronomy. It adds another element to this band which means they are not just another post-Britpop outfit with decent tunes (a la Courteeners or some such). An interesting album with some decent tunes.
I don't like the screaming. But I do think some songs have a more laidback vibe, which I like.
Interesting
I was like, "oh, I REMEMBER Wild Beasts..." Then I slowly realised I went to see them in 2009 but had completely forgotten. Good music and they really stood out at the time, but a whole album of the vocals are a bit much for me now.
Kinda weird at first but it grew on me a little bit. I get some U2 vibes here. I also like the ethereal-ness of it - spacey guitars and keys. I can dig it. The whole thing is a little whiny for me though.
I liked this album...listened 3 or 4 times each time finding something new and interesting to increase my enjoyment. Varied sounds and tempos that keep things interesting. 3.5 stars
The instrumentals in this album are excellent. The vocalist caught me somewhat off guard with his theatrical vibrato and grandeur, although it was definitely unique. He sounded somewhat like he was turning his sentences into big yawns at the end. Some songs were strange, others surprisingly pleasant. I liked how different this one was. Def gives 2009 indie.
super original, and really interesting vocals. i just don't think it's anything worth exploring for a second time.
I was ready to hate this but it’s pretty listenable. I actually lived in LS6 around this time and I’ve never heard of these lads. There’s no way this should be on the list. It was fine though.
Sufficiently weird to be more vibey than sentimental
Look around reviews of this album on this website, everyone harps on the one singer's voice. Everyone, whether they liked the album or not — and most of them didn't — feels the need to bring it up. Shall I, too, find myself throwing my weight into that thoroughly-covered topic? Yeah, sure, why not? 'Coz tryna talk about this thing on an instrumental level... Eh, it's fine. Perfectly fine. If this album were completely stripped of its vocals, it would have been an alright piece of background music. Which, of course, I don't mean as an insult; wallpaper can be as much art as anything in a frame. Besides, it can be better than staring at an empty wall, huh? On a vocal level, though, I actually have something to add. See, I've actually heard these vocals before. 'Coz it's Sparks. That's what these vocals are. They're a shot at how Russell Mael of Sparks sings. And believe me, I love Sparks. Watch me gush about KIMOMO MY HOUSE whenever my group gets it. As well, there's NO.1 IN HEAVEN and LIL' BEETHOVEN and a whole variety of scattered songs. I'm actually incredibly used to these kinds of vocals, and I kinda like them. That said, though, they **do** feel kind of off here. Not in a way where I actively dislike them, but, like... OK, hear me out. One of the things that makes the music of Sparks so great is how they apply a layer of theatrical unseriousness to nearly everything they do. Like, of course they take the compositions seriously, but there's always this cheeky edge present — a surprisingly British one for an American band. That's what helps make their music so fun, whether they're doing glam, electronic dance or minimalist chamber music, and Russell's singing and androgynous falsetto plays a huge factor in that. PLus, it's just a really good falsetto, so that helps. Listen to anything from KIMONO MY HOUSE, or at least just "This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us". You'll get what I mean. Versus the falsetto on this album, where I never got the sense that this music was supposed to be cheeky or fun. No, I'm supposed to take this completely seriously. And even as much as my experience from Sparks keeps me from hating this kind of singing... At the same time, it kinda makes me wish I was listening to Sparks. Y'know, there's maybe a bit too much pretension towards making something **IMPORTANT AND MEANINGFUL** here, versus anything Sparks has ever written. Like I'm supposed to look back on this as a touchstone in my life or something, when all it'll really be is "that album I delayed watched THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS a bit to listen to 'coz I was late hearing it." And then the other guy, the one who doesn't do a falsetto, starts singing and there's nothing to say 'coz... He's just a guy? Goodness, at least the other one lets me babble on about Sparks like it's actually **that** relevant (I mean, I think it is, anyway). (And this is another album that, from what I hear, it's a good thing I don't focus too hard on the lyrics. Goodness.) So... Yeah. For "wild beasts," they sound pretty damn tame. It's a big fat 3. It's fine straight down the line, and not too terribly interesting to me for that. I mean, goodness, if I end up spending a good chunk of my review talking about Sparks instead, there's gotta be something at least a **little** wrong. Speaking of Sparks, by the way, I hope my group gets KIMONO MY HOUSE soon. What an album, I swear...
I’m at a 3. This album doesn’t find an identity in terms of what it wants to talk about, and in terms of how it wants to approach its subject matter. This is meant to sound like a coming of age album, glorifying the freedom of youth, romance and companionship, as well as some of the dread that comes with that. It sort of succeeds, but it’s done with a very male-skewed view that simply hasn’t aged well as of 2024 going into 2025 – I think the biggest offenders of all the tracks here are the 1-2 punch of “This Is Our Lot” & “Underbelly”, both of which just sort of gave me an ick that left a bad taste in my mouth, and made me rethink a bit while looking back at the whole album. The lyrics on “This Is Our Lot” start nice, being out on the town with the boys in the bar, but it quickly shifts into this idea of ‘we’re using ourselves as bait for the ladies, please come and bite, I beg of you.’ I think “Underbelly” doubles down on it with the line of “How Lothario leers at slut”, and while I get the historical reference, and the overall tone of both tracks, it strikes me as desperate, and almost makes it sound like they’re entitled to it. While I’m sure it’s intended in a way that feels more juvenile, there are so many other ways you can express lust and carnal desire without feeling like you’re entitled to it. A lot of the love tracks on this album ultimately then feel rooted in the idea of entitlement – Hooting & Howling has the lines “any rival who goes for our girls will be left thumb-sucking in terror and bereft of all coffin bearers.” Those lines read fine on a first listen as a sort of funny & over-the-top idle threat, but after the other tracks sort of reveal an implied entitlement, they just seem controlling and awkward. There’s only one track that really involves comeuppance of this idea, which is the tail end of “All The King’s Men”, but it’s literally too late by the time those realizations come in. I may be reading this with a little too much of a skew against them, but it’s hard not to read these lyrics in the romance-driven tracks without that perceived entitlement to a relationship, and while it might’ve played better in 2009, I just don’t think it’s aged well at all. There are definitely ways to read this that look more positive, with an implied chivalry aspect to the whole thing, but I just can’t make a real conclusion one way or the other, because this album really does struggle with its own identity. I’ll give it some benefit of the doubt, but… man, I just don’t know. I also think this album just can’t really decide if it wants to be instrumentally driven or vocally driven and as such, this album never really settles into a good balance of the 2. Don’t get me wrong; there’s definitely a musical identity in terms of the soundscape and production – what’s here is a modernized 80s sound, certainly driven with a bit of Peter Gabriel-esque influence. It usually sounds pretty good, and it’s an album that I suspect would sound pretty good while going for a drive. There are really catchy guitar riffs, percussion, and vocal melodies in this album, but there’s also a lot of repetition that drags it down musically. Ultimately, I don’t think this is THAT bad, and I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt for good reason, but all things aside, it’s just an album that can’t figure out what it wants to say, how it wants to say it, or even WHY it wants to say it. The instrumentals, vocals, and production do a good enough job at keeping things steady that I think I can give this a 3 on the strength of its sound alone, but it could drop down to a 2 the moment it starts to feel too boring or repetitive. If anything, I wish this entire album were more like its bonus track, “Through the Iron Gate”. That shit was rad.
Once I got used to the singers voice I actually really enjoyed this album by a band who would otherwise have passed me by.
Enjoyed this (and think I enjoyed it back in the day as well). There are some very odd, very unsexy sexy lyrics, which is cool and I like the low key, pastoral instrumentation. Few bangers on there, and a lot about shagging in the Lake District. Fair dos. Best Tracks: Hooting and Howling, Two Dancers Part 1
Musically interesting. Got that turn of the century indie sound, light guitar arpeggios and lots of synth work. Vocals - just not strong enough for the songs.
Enjoyable while listening, but entirely forgettable within a week.
Instrumentals are great; wish there were no vocals.
One minute into this album, I thought the list had illuminated a new hidden gem….. Then came the vocals. Can’t I just mute the vocals? late 00’s freak folk indie rock, Animal Collective on one side of the spectrum and….whatever this is on the other - it had its moments. Not this one. Gets a bonus point for when I could imagine it without any of the vocals.
No idea who this is. Let's see if I recognize anything... nice opening track. Vocals are out there.. almost out of range of my desire to hear anymore singing. I like the music, though. In fact, if I could just hear an instrumental version of this album, I would give it a 4 to 5. I'm giving this a 3, because the vocals give it a minus 1. The only number left in my review is 2, which is in the album name, "Two Dancers", and is exactly one less than the stars given in this review.
It’s weird! I like the instrumental parts, vocals I feel like you have to be in a certain mood to enjoy.
Two Dancers is pretty interesting. Reminds of me of a much more dramatic The xx. Lyrically it’s very sexualized. I like the modern indie downbeat sound but do not love Hayden Thomas’ vocals. The 2nd singer is better, as heard on All The Kings Men. 6.4/10
It's like listening to your coworkers butcher your favourite songs at karaoke night
Overly dramatic, yodelesque vocals with strange lyrics over really good music. We Still Got The Taste Dancing On Our Tongues is the peak of the album, catchy and not too weird. Two Dancers and This Is Out Lot are good followers, then it gets dramatic and weird again with Underbelly. Going, going, gone (2.7*s)
Never heard of Wild Beasts but overall enjoyed the sound. The music itself, the beats, synth, and arrangements are really good; the androgynous vocals that vary from low moaning to falsetto screeches are an odd choice but grow on you. I actually gave this a few listens and ended up liking it a lot more than I thought. It's a bit spacey and ethereal at times but also catchy and indie-pop. It's a good discovery from the list and it's definitely not boring. 3.25 for weird intensity combined with calming effects. Got me "Hooting & Howling" on a Thursday afternoon.
I enjoyed this more than I should I think have. Really liked the back up band music...little math rock sound. Vocals got a little over dramatic at times. Never heard of this band and didn't realize it was as recent an album until I checked Global summary. Will throw on again and liked it all enough for a solid 3 star.
🎧This is fine, kind of middle of the road indie rock/dream pop. I don’t love the singer’s voice. Some of this reminds me of Alt-j. Favorite track: All The King’s Men. Worst track: Through The Iron Gate
Idk this didn’t do much for me. Kinda like a poor man’s Alt-J, and I don’t hold Alt-J in particularly high esteem, so…yeah. — 3/5 Highlights: All The King’s Men
Britisk indierock, masser af falset, god stryger
First couple tracks were awful, but the last half of the album was actually really good. Not sure how I want to rate this one. I did enjoy the percussion, keys and guitars. Vocals not so much.
Feels like it inspired Fred Again. Ok for one go every now and then.
Lots of echo and reverb, lighthearted album.
The instrumentals are great and the vocals were pretty good for both singers, but the lyrics seem to be really inconsistent. Thorpe's lyrics in particular get a little bit too silly sometimes for my taste. Overall not bad though.
Kinda of alt. Ok.
In theory I should really dig this, but the execution mostly displeases me. There will be others who hear it who aren't as put off as I am by many of Wild Beasts' melodic choices and the vocal approach. Two Dancers feels like a record that I can hear where they wanted to take the music but didn't quite get there, instead of it being an album that fully realizes its territory for the listener.
This had some interesting moments, particularly the first three tracks. Interesting enough to listen 2x , but nothing really grabbed me to come back again. 2.5/5
This album was included in the 2011 version of the 1001 book and I’d be surprised if it made later cuts. The music and arrangements across this album were interesting and at times unpredictable which is cool. Thankfully lead vocal duties were shared across two guys because that falsetto was not my bag, and at times simply too annoying to listen to.
I suspect I like this album more than most. Lead singers voice was interesting and probably the biggest complaint of reviewers. I dunno, I think it’s kinda cool. Really good drum grooves, too. 3.5/5
Un album assez réussi à mont gout !
temu arcade fire
Sorprendente
I've listened to this quite a few times now and granted I am busy working, but nothing is standing out to me. In general it's a nice sound and some fun vocals. I've never heard anything from Wild Beasts before I've completely missed them. The album does have a good nostalgic vibe which reminds me of some good times but no tracks or sounds stand out. Nice though.
This reminded me a bit of Alt J and also of Palace. I liked This is our lot the most I think. I reckon when I was younger I would have been well into this, when indy was more my thing. But now I find some elements of it a bit silly. But a decent album overall I reckon
i can already tell everyone is gonna hate this one on the reviews. Some things really worked for me but in general I probably won't revisit this. The singing is a lot and I don't love how it all sounds... but there is definitely something there sometimes. 3
The list demonstrating here that it's favourite genre of "naff vocals" has continued throughout the decades.
Listened to this during a very bad hangover and it was not the right move.
Grew on me a little
This one grew on me the more I listened. Just made it into the 3s.
Quirky album for sure, sort of indie rock in style, but the singing reminds me of someone like Anohni. I didn't come away with too many tracks but this one was decent, I'm not mad. Worthy of this list? Maybe not, but I had a fine time listening. Favorite tracks: The Fun Powder Plot, Two Dancers II. Album art: Faces seemingly blended together in some abstract art shape, one might call it a smudge or a stain. Look, I'm not sure what I'm looking at, but as far as covers go it's fairly striking. 3/5
ganz okay, manchmal fad & manchmal stimme anstrengend
It was super cool, the guys voice hit every other song. Solid 3.
Hm. Not sure who wrote that review uh oh. Well this account is Eli’s hi! And let’s keep it that way! This album was cool though, nothing insane or mind blowing imo.
a bit generic
Mild Beats.
Not bad but not great.
I didn't hate the vocals much as most reviewers seem to. It's interesting. Not sure if I like it or not. Giving it a 3. On a different day I could see myself giving it a 1.
Some of the music is great, the vocals take some getting used to but it grows on you.
Decent indie rock record with tinges of synth-pop sprinkled in there. There’s not really a bad song on this but the thing as a whole never really blows me away.
Liked the music to an extent, but the voice really annoyed me.
My pulse always quickens when an album pops up from an artist I’ve never heard of before. Not often we get the chance to approach an album with no prior knowledge. I enjoyed this. It’s not groundbreaking but the vibe is good. Has a Malcolm McLaren feel to the electronic production and some of the melodies. I can imagine coming back to it some day. I’ve still got the taste dancing on my tongue.
Cool beans
I liked it, some of the more Operatic stuff on the first few tracks wasn't really my cup of tea but it finished strong
Svårt. Ogillar den androgyna rösten (dock inte på alla låtar). Gillar typ alla intron, men tröttnar när låten kommer igång. Pendlar mellan 2 och 3. Men vissa låtar är ok rakt igenom. Two dancers, hooting, Iron Gate (ish).
It was pretty good. Get rid of the vocals and it would be great.
Someone who makes this list really loves over dramatic theater kid indie. It's so light on music from the last 30 years, but what they choose is baffling. This is one of the most mid albums ever
A dreamy, mythical sounding album. I remember when this came out, they were indie darlings. It still holds a lot of water, especially the three singles. Really no weak points on the whole album, it maintains a certain sense of sparkly romanticism throughout. This Is Our Lot is a highlight of the second half. Not groundbreaking or necessarily a standout, but a really strong album overall.
It’s a pretty sounding album but it’s a bit too ethereal to be memorable. It’s fun and well made though.
hoot
I just enjoyed it that's my note
The vocals were meh and the music was okay. 2.5/5
Started slow but actually grew on me. Almost considered giving a 4 at one point but not dying to listen to this again so it's just average.
It was good. Indie.
The music I liked, but those vocals… yikes.
Not bad. Vocals tho... Oof 2.5/5
If this was remade as an instrumental album I would give it another star.
Rating: 6/10 Great instrumentation, very chill, but bad vocally.
Lots of ear-catching material on here, but overall a disappointing experience. This felt like art rock for art rock's sake, with not much intention on making a cohesive, interesting record most users could resonate with.
Great music, not great vocals. Dunno where to score this.
Yeeees enfin un truc un peu fun !!
it's pretty good, it's different and has glimpses of very good stuff. doesn't massively stand out though and almost forgot i was listening at times
I feel like I've gotten a bunch of albums that I don't really know what to think of lately, which could be an interesting coincidence, might be a sign that I'm slipping back into clinical depression, or it might indicate that, while the list has made it easier for me to contextualize a lot of albums, there are certain time periods and genres that I struggle with placing into meaningful context. This is one such album. It sounds good, but very much of its time, and I don't particularly like its time when it comes to rock music. Is this another uninspiring Brit pop album crammed into this list at the insistence of the author? Should I go back on Prozac? The world may never know. Anyway, this album is fine: 3/5 stars
Yesterday I spoke about an album that made me feel empty and lifeless. Today I am presented with an album that actually is lifeless itself. Think of how flat and devoid of energy a blank whiteboard is. That is what I am working with here. That sounds horribly negative. And I don’t want it to be interpreted in that way. Because I don’t absolutely hate this album. But I can’t help this feeling that this album is somehow sapping all of the energy from my body. You know that place Squidward got brought to in the time machine? The one that was all white with little blocks of color. Imagine what that would sound like if it was music. Glimpses of something interesting, but everything else is just so neutral and gray. The most unique aspect of this is by far the vocals. I’m so in between on whether I like them or despise them. The man has range, that’s for sure. But he often spends his time singing in the highest points of that range, and it’s a little grating on the ears to say the least. This sounds like an album that some insufferable nerd would try and push on me. And when I would explain that I don’t like it, he would just respond with “No, you don’t get it. You need to really hear what they are playing”. This is like Interpol or The xx for even bigger losers. There is some nice post-punk revival era drumming, that reminded me of the stuff Stephen Morris recorded for Joy Division. The guitars also sound nice on occasion. But none of that stops this from feeling and sounding messy, and also making me want to self-isolate in the corner of a dark room. Rating: 5/10
The lead singer's tone is.....distinctive on The Fun Powder Plot. God I hate this guy's voice. Which is a shame because the instrument work and structure is really great and also super approachable.
Didn't love it
Not bad
Synthy alternative with male and female vocals. It's good background music, but nothing tremendous here to write home about.
Swirling indie rock with lots of shimmery guitars and falsetto vocals. This is really polished and well-produced though often a little too weird for me to fully connect with it. Not a fan of the vocals. Would probably revisit. Best song: This is Our Lot
I liked it, i found this kind of relaxing and that's beautiful, even tho i also think that this album can be really forggetable for their repetitive vocals, but it's not bad at all
mm, more like Mild Beats
Rating 3/5
frekar gott gáfumannapopp. rafskotið. á aðra skilið. 3,5.
Instrumentals started in the first song and really thought I was going to be into this and then the vocals came in...... Antony and the Johnsons on vocals but then another guy takes over vocal duties on a handful of songs that are much more palatable. Overall, I really enjoyed this album other than some moments of what the fuck with the vocals.
странный вокал, почти пародийный, не могу воспринимать
Bit generic
It was decent. We thought it sounded a lot like arcade fire
It’s not my thing but they do it well.
This band is new to me and I don't recall having heard any of their music before, so yet again this project introduces me to a band I now like. This album has some very good tracks on it and I enjoyed giving it a listen. I'll return to it and I'm curious about their other work.
A few tracks were standouts here, the production and instrumentals were most enjoyable. The change in vocal range to falsetto catches me off hairs but in a good way.
Is this a ducking Elbow redux? Better but similar
Meh. It's alright.
Sounds great, but this is really your average indie rock album from the early 2010s.
This appears very polarising which baffles me. I would regard this as a solid slice of 00's indie, with a more distinctive vocalist than most. But the songs aren't really strong enough for more than 3.2/3/3
2000s British indie darling album that's just "eh" today. The falsetto seems a little gimmicky and the lyrics leave a lot to be desired. Players are good, but this one is forgettable.
I can see this will be a genre/era of my liking. Digging the intro, but iffy on the falsetto-y singing Enjoyable sound, 3* Enjoyed: the fun powder plot, underbelly (ended too abruptly though)
3.5
instrumentalmente me pareció interesante, el resto es solo britrock
Pleasant enough - nothing stands out.
At least a 3
Lite svårbedömd. Två, trea, tvåa, trea?
This is another one of those fairly odd UK selections that is only in more recent versions of the 1001. It's not bad, but the vocal tone is affected, and that's creating a bit of a ceiling for me, as I don't like them much.
Pleasant to listen to.
I liked this a bit more that the consensus. I've been enjoying this genere recently and this band fits in well. I found the vocals a bit trying as well, along with others, but it grew on me
I had never heard of them, and it was pretty good for a first listen.
Thought it was gonna be fantastic until the singing started
Never heard of this band before today. So far, I really like what I hear on this record. Sometimes with indie artists you get stuff thats different for the sake of being different or just crap contrived crap, this is neither. I like this album a lot. I feels like an album that, although accessible, would get better the more time you sit with it and dive into it. at just over 43 minutes, it's a breeze to get through. I really like this type of guitar work, when the guitar isn't front and centre, but it's doing a lot of heavy lifting in the background. Interesting bits of rhythm at different points, interesting vocals I think I'm between a very high 3 and a low 4, I will probably lean towards 3 for now.
Instrumentation good. Voice to breathy for me. Some songs good for dancing.
This sounds like the kind of music I would enjoy - it makes me think of MIKA mashed-up with the soundtrack to Sing Street - AND YET it just made me wish I were listening to either of those instead. Ultimately, this album is fine, if mildly annoying.
Given the atrocities described in the reviews here, the vocals didn't upset me that much – it's essentially a more extreme version of the husky falsetto Glass Animals would use later down the road. The singing does, however, cloud the album a bit and take center stage over what I think are some amazing and creative instrumentals. Lots of great guitar work and experimental tones going on in the background, but they have to play second fiddle to the vox which are staged front and center in every single track. A little frustrating to have an album sound so good but be one I don't think I want to listen to again. Sitting right at a 2.5 for me so I'm going to be gracious and give it a 3.
Cool sound but I can’t understand a word they are saying.
Its ok.
A decent album the first two songs grabbed me but then i couldnt tell one song from another by the end.
I found 3 songs I like ..two Dancers (Those 2 Songs) - and Fun Powder Plot and then listen to the xx English Band - I Dare You Millie Bobbie Brown and 2nd (crystallised), then Sigma Find me with Millie Bobbie Brown again
Actually enjoyable
Didn’t know what to expect, was somewhat pleasantly surprised, but not my kind of music overall.
So, released in 2009 and made the 2011 list of albums to hear before you die. Seems a little soon for that. An album needs either legacy, complete surprise and admiration, or sheer innovation to make a list like this, no? This isn't the first category and I'm pretty sure it's not the last category either, so is it really the middle one? Not in my opinion. I guess almost all critics loved it in 2009 so maybe universal acclaim is justifiable. But maybe it was just trendy to say you liked this album at the time - does it hold up? It's fine, and somewhat melodic. But it's no more than average for me. Next.
Stylish and generally pretty cool though the failed-opera-singer vocalizing does wear thin after a time, though second, more straightforward (and deeper) singer helps. Not entirely sure how one missed this record 'til now, but glad to know it.
Only listened to a couple songs so can't fully judge but seemed quite good from an Indie Rock band and it was less formulaic than the classic stuff
I've never heard of this group before, but after this experience I would listen to more from them. I found this album musically interesting, but something about the vocals was distracting to my mind or ears. I think this would be a wonderful post-rock album, warranting a four star rating if it didn't have lyrics. As it is, it's closer to a 2.5, so it's getting a three from me—I hope to come back to it and either accept the lyrics and hear past them better, or perhaps find an undiscovered joy awaiting in them.
These guys are from my county and I followed them coming up. It was exciting to see a local band make it big and I had this album and saw them live. I'm surprised to see this on the list as it never struck me as a classic. A relisten a decade later shows this for what it is: an ok album, with a fairly marmite singer. This isn't bringing any warm fuzzy feelings back and it won't send me back through their catalog, but its nice.
Ecoute au final agréable, malgré la voix des fois irritante. Peut être à réécouter
Husker ikke, men tror d var chill
Vaihteeks ihan hyvää 2000-luvun indierockia, tulee vähän grizzly bear mieleen. 3.5/5
There's a familiar sound with this album. It's almost floatless and dreamy. Doesn't really drag you away.

Quite enjoyed this. Having two lead singers meshing over an album is refreshing, in a way. You have one sound like a Millenial Sparks, and another sound a bit like a more sparkly Elbow. None of it explodes, but it is all actively enjoyable.
Enjoyable, I probably wouldn’t seek it out. Not my style.
3/5 This was pretty chill. Best track: Two Dancers (i)
Good enough to listen to while working, but not really sure if I like it or not. It might need another round of listening
Good
HL: “All the King’s Men”, “We Still Got the Taste Dancin’ On Our Tongues”, title track, “The Fun Powder Plot” At first I was annoyed that this seemed to be built from the ashes of removed albums by Muse, Arcade Fire, and Antony & the Johnsons. I see now that it’s a different beast (lol) entirely. The difference between the dreamy instrumental soundscapes and the frontman’s voice is a bit oil-and-water for me, but that’s also what makes it stand out And it wouldn’t be the first album to be a 3 today, 5 tomorrow November 8th, 2023
Honestly pretty good and enjoyable
Didn't find it to be super ear-catching but I did enjoy the listen. 3.5
The Fun Powder Plot - 8/10 Hootin & Howling - 7.5/10 All The King's Men - 8/10 When I'm Sleepy... - 7.5/10 We Still Got The Taste Dancin' On Our Tongues - 8/10 Two Dancers(i) - 8/10 Two Dancers(ii) - 7/10 This Is Our Lot - 8/10 Underbelly - 8/10 Empty Nest - 7/10 Through The Iron Gate - 7.5/10 TOTAL - 84.5/110
I would have liked this WAY more without the falsetto singing. I did liked it on the whole; the beats were great and the non-falsetto singer had a great voice, but Hayden Thorpe's voice really started to aggravate me after awhile. Probably more of a 3.5 or 3.75.
This was fine listening, but I didn't really love it or connect with it much, even being a genre I usually enjoy.
Well, that didn't do anything for me...
Not as dreadful as I first thought. I didn't enjoy the falsetto and the style's not particularly my thing. I wouldn't choose to listen again but I'm not mad.
- Well the title certainly fits the vibe of the album - I love the instrumentals but I don't like the vocals really at all - Got more into it as it went along tbh - Two Dancers (i) and All The King's Men are my favorites
Second Listen Wild Beasts are an Indie Rock band from England. 2009 Singles: All the King's Men, Hooting & Howling, We Still Got the Taste Dancin' on Our Tongues Enjoyable, but more on the average side.... 3/5
I really liked the production of this album but honestly the breathy vocals kept me from enjoying this album for the most part. It had a nice late 2000s, early 2010s indie vibe but deerhunter did it much better (even though I don't really think that album deserves a 5 anymore)
This seems to have alot of hate, all the most recent reviews are 1 and 2's. It's finnne if not totally bland, I can get why people hate it because it never really does much but its no where near as offensive as some of the other things on this list.
3.6 - To me, Grizzly Band already cornered this sound on their 2006 debut "Yellow House" - this indie-dream, queer-fronted, falsetto-forward, intricate-guitar-picking, dressed-up-arty sound...But unlike GB, this one leans much more heavily in the profane, which sets it apart. I like the echo-y bells on "Underbelly", as well as the bouncy pop of "All the King's Men."
Pretty good and consistent baroque pop record borrowing from 80s synth-pop, contemporaries like Arcade Fire or Grizzly Bear, and post-punk revival (with the repetition, industrial effects, and groove). His voice is pleasant and dreamy with quite a range that does remind me of Kate Bush, an influence he cites. First side is very strong, although they do blend a bit. They all have their high moments, with "When I'm Sleepy" serving as a necessary break between momentous tracks. Our first three tracks are the catchiest and strongest, could be indie rock anthems. "We Still Got the Taste" has a lot of well-executed ideas, showing the extent of his voice and some powerful beats and overlayed synths. The middle tracks "Two Dancers" is the most emotional, something I found lacking in later tracks. It's a well-executed idea with an anxiety-inducing background effect, nicely transitioning to the reprise. I just found the instrumental to be a bit generic "indie rock" in the first part. The reprise started nicely, but the vocals are drums sorta ruined it. I felt like it could have been a nice (and shorter) peaceful instrumental. Lack four tracks felt like unfinished ideas. It's all decent, some of it good, but leaves much to be desired, especially compared to the first half. "This is Our Lot" sounds like Interpol with ghastly vocals, and the build up was satisfying, but took too long to get there. "Underbelly" tries to be experimental, with an industrial first half and a jangly second half that reminds me of 70s ambience, but it doesn't go anywhere, the transition is sudden, it doesn't fit in with the rest of the album, and it just sounds like they're messing around. They try to pick it up with "Empty Nest", which has a cool sound, but sounds like it's trying to imitate the success of the first half but with less energy. If it was crafted slightly differently, I could see it being as a fitting closer. "Through the Iron Gate" is our eery finale. Again, some cool ideas, but it goes too long without going many places.
I really thought the intro to the first song was awesome and this album was going to go place, then the singer started singing. Not a fan of the voice. The singers voice gets more tolerable over the course of the album, but the songs all feel very similar. Feels like some pretty standard indie music. I like the pluckiness of the guitar. Overall there were a couple bright spots in this album, and very few lows, but most of it was average or so. This album is pretty solidly in the 3 category.
Very solid album all the way through which I enjoyed listening to. Nothing really stood out in particular except for the different singers voices were very unique and were the focl points of the album. Through the Iron Gate at the end was probably my favorite with the nice little guitar riff that they kept repeating. Would probably need to listen to the album again to get a good appreciation for it, but thorugh first listen it was solid.
Great easy listen for Monday drive in....
Pretty decent, the kind of indie rock that almost swings. I prefer my music with more of an edge, but this is the kind of coffee shop background noise that I can appreciate it. C+
I absolutely love the music of this. It's so good! The album is completely let down by the bizarre vocal delivery, though. It seems to be a register too high for the singer and at times is reminiscent of the noise Greg Davies makes when introducing Little Alex Horne. Such an odd choice. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: We Still Got the Taste Dancin' on Our Tongues Date listened: 03/09/23
Well, it definitely seems like a grower. At first listen, I don't really hate it nor really like it either. Will have to listen to it a couple more times.
Fun album, I would have loved this 10-15 years ago.
5/5 music, 1/5 vocals
I like the music. No surprise. I dislike Hayden Thorpe’s vocals. Too much whiny sounding falsetto. Tom Fleming’s vocals are serviceable.
Inoffensive indie music. A pleasant listen
I feel like if I was forced onto a desert island with only this album as entertainment, I would start to like it significantly more or significantly less.
Best Song: This Is Our Lot. I really liked the slick bassline in the background.. Worst Song: Underbelly. It was kind of pleasant, but then it stopped so abruptly to drop into a heavy kick of the following song that it lost all its groove retroactively. Overall: I mean, it's alright. I can imagine putting it on as chill background music while cooking, but that's about it.
Zeitgeisty to a fault, and (to flatter myself) part of a busy crowd of releases in a similar vein. The softer approach to dance music goes around a few curves, ethereality never interrupted. Tickles nicely.
Very neutral, enjoyable background music. Works great while you’re doing something else
At times this sounds a bit like Glass Animals, which is when it’s at its best.
Oddly weird
I’d still take this over System of a Down any day of the week. Vocals reminded me a bit of Jónsi or even Bono in a few spots.
It's interesting, but I'm not a big fan of the vocal style. 3 stars.
actually such a mood
Yeah, this album is fine. Didn't really do anything magical for me, but sounds like its time period.
I don't even know when this album ended. The songs seem well written. It's a bit odd though. A bit ethereal. Maybe influenced Bon Iver a bit? Not really my bag. Kind of toes the line on experimental.
I am super intrigued by the cover art. And the titles of the tracks. Opens really strong. Oh wait, is that supposed to be singing? The vibe is cool but the vocals do not, shall we say, enhance my enjoyment of the music. And the lyrics are genuinely 'naners. The songs feel like the music came first, lovingly crafted. Then poetry from a madman was found hidden in the walls or something. We're getting the first attempt of two people who can almost sing trying to wing singing these words they are seeing for the first time to match the music playing in the next room that they can't all the way hear. I also suspect they are trying to make each other laugh. It's almost cool but shoots wide. Cool adjacent. 2.5 rounding up for uniqueness. I'm OK with it on this list.
Music sort of fine but the vocals annoy throughout. Sounds like a bunch of lads trying to be a bit indie different.
Bizarre but kind of interesting
It’s ok and sounds a lot like everything else in the genre
This was OK.
For the most part I enjoyed this. I was initially off put by the singer’s falsetto but got over it
Most songs were adequate.
Never heard of this. I enjoyed it overall. There was quite a few groovy bridges/transitions between the parts of the songs that were really exciting and kept me interested. It felt like a bit of a musical experimentation as it was a touch avant-garde with the instrumentation, production, and especially the vocals.
There's some good music here overall - but the vocalist is a bit abrasive to me.
The songs are actually pretty interesting on this album, but unfortunately the off-putting singing ruins the effect quite a lot.
Absolutely love the way this progresses as the album goes on - from ethereal and flowing to a much more driving sound. enchanting throughout. Best tracks: all the kings men, empty nest, through the iron gate
Not as good as I thought it would be, but too moany for me. 2.5
listened to again just as boring as the first time i heard it
I like their music but the singing kind of gets in the way. I don't know. Maybe I could get used to it but on first listening it bothers me.
Pas vraiment marquer par cette album, je sais pas l’annee mais j’ai limpression quils ont ecoute du radiohead et du coldplay et ont essaye de faire quelque chose dans le illieu. 3
It doesn't always work for me - I'm not too fond of the screaming here and there - but the more downplayed songs like Two Dancers are definitely worth listening.
Not my kind of music.
Rock indie
All the Kings Men is a good tune, but this isn't an album you need to hear before you die.
Production is pretty interesting throughout, but I am not living for these vocals and a lot of the tunes are kinda aimless.
Écouté un peu en accéléré, manque d'un truc qui pète
⭐ This Is Our Lot
ok
Bin nu ned dazu kema...
Having made the mistake of reading the reviews here before listening to anything beyond the first half of the first track, I was kind of expecting this to be utterly awful. It isn't. I mean, it isn't world-changingly amazing, but it's pretty decent-ish experimental music, happily released at a time that the music world had taken a battering of the absolute void that was 2002-2008. The music industry was reeling; they'd evacuated their bowels so completely, with such violence and vigour that it had taken their brains out with it. "Oh noes!" they thought. "Napster and Limewire and torrents and Apple Music are going to ruin us!", wailed the music execs. And they sent their lawyers. Wave after wave of lawyers, all claiming that a teenager putting half a dozen of their favourite songs on limewire meant tens of trillions of "unrealised revenue". Indeed, Limewire was sued in 2012 by the Recording Industry Ass. of America for $72tn. $72tn! The World Bank tells me that the GDP of the entire USA in 2012 was $16.25tn, which just goes to show how ludicrously delusional the music industry had become. The Fear Of Piracy ruined music in the mid-2000s, like some eviscerating beast. Any executive with any record label was more acutely aware of the myriad lawsuits against teenagers and college students than of the talent and aspiration of up-and-coming artists. Declining revenues - which would normally be a bad thing - were ascribed to piracy, and yet the music that they made available was dismal. Colour me a conspiracy theorist, but declining music sales could easily be shown as proof that piracy was ruining them - and it might actually have been in their interest to continue pumping out dismal music and dismal artists. This album doesn't really fit that theme, though. Before being recommended this, I had literally never heard of the album or the artist. So clearly the music industry weren't pushing this down our throats in the way that they were for, say, The White Stripes or The Killers. But this album is better constructed than a The White Stripes or a The Killers album. Whilst there are some clear gurns to the camera telegraphing how new and "innovative" this album is, there's also a clearly constructed method to how the album progresses. And that's quite refreshing. Would I rate it as a must-listen? No, clearly not. But is it as bad as the reviews here make out? Also no.
This was OK background music but it didn't hold my attention
Some real shades of 80s and 90s stuff here. Nice, but nothing especially grabbed me.
Pretty good
I did like some of the songs. Some others were a little boring. Overall not very memorable.
Liked it but after a while I started reminding me of other music that I actually like more than this
I used to be a big fan of the modern British Indie rock. Has elements from that that I really enjoy. The singer kinda ruins it for me with his moany falsetto
It kinda sounds standard indie-pop fare. I dunno, it's not a very different record from other indie records of the same variety at the time.
Surprised I hadn’t heard of these guys.
I bet they liked Sparks.
I can really dig the rhythm section but the vocals were grating to be honest. I’ll give 3 stars for the rhythm section, they sound like 80s Post Punk. 3/5.
Pop diferente, en ocasiones un tanto instrumental. Voces también poco comunes. Tiene un punto que es agradable de escuchar, pero no me llenado especialmente
Enjoyable album that maybe needs a few more listens to sync in. My first impression was Hercules and Love Affair lite. I could be wrong
I almost like this but the falsetto singing kills it for me but the smooth jazzy beats sell me
This is an album where I really enjoyed the music much much than I enjoyed the vocals. It's the same reason I can't seem to enjoy Anthony and the Johnsons. The music, especially rhythmically, is really good, but the falsetto voice, in my humble opinion, takes too much away from it, stands too much in the foreground and is starting to annoy quite quickly. The few songs where it doesn't happen are my favourites.
It's okay. Of it's time, in a Fleet Foxes etc. way.
Serious and well crafted like Radiohead and Elbow, but slightly more immediately palatable. Falsetto can grate after a while, but not at all like Justin The Darkness Hawkins! I can see why Wild Beasts were critically acclaimed but didn't gain wider public acceptance. Useful to be introduced to this now defunct band.
I had heard of this band bit don't think I had listened to them before. I enjoyed some of the songs on it but overall it sort of faded into the background for me. Instrumentally it sounded quite good but the singer's baby voice vocals were a bit grating in places. Not sure if I'd listen again, maybe it would grow on me a bit.
Indie-pop. Ni fu ni fa.
Never heard of this band before. I really like the instrumentation but the "falsettoness" of the lead singer is making it hard for me to fully get into this band. All "The fun Powder Plot" hooked me right away with the intro but the vocals fell flat to the point that I un-added it from my Spotify songs. All The Kings Men was a good one too. just overall not a singer I want to listen to for a prolonged period of time
The start of the first track had me thinking - "oh no, not another boring indie thing", however it got better. It never reached the level of persuading me that I should listen to more of their work, but it also did not have me wishing that it would end soon. Fairly solid soft rock/indie with vocals that would be better if the singer did not depend so much on his falsetto. They also have little idea about how to structure an album. The first minute of this album will lose tham a lot of listeners.
didnt really feel like anything
it's ok, preferred the songs after "two dancers" pt 1 and 2.
Not too bad, not too good either. There was just nothing I got really hooked on.
fun! weird! reminds me of that one Antony and the Johnsons albums I have, especially the vocals. probably will not return to this one.
Synth driven art indie art pop that needs a few listens. The high male voices will turn some people off. I kinda like the vibe but there are are no killer tunes on there.
Gives me Bowie vibes
Was different than I expected.
kinda cool
Overall pleasant to listen, but it turned into just background music very soon. Instrumentals were very nice, vocals did lag behind a bit but didn't disturb. I liked it but just can't see this as a must listen album.
Des influences de Muse et Radiohead. Bon album en général, passe vite, mais un peu oubliable.
It was moderately good. Nothing crazy nor anything really bad.
Pretty good, would listen again
Thought this was an interesting indie rock album. The band has a unique use of instruments and vocals. I don’t find it as impressive as some other indie rock artists but they are talented and made some good music that I’d listen to again. 6.1/10
It’s fine, the definition of the word.
Listened to on 8/16/22 3/5 Favorite song: Hooting & Howling Nothing super memorable - I felt like the pitch was a little out of range but all in all it was good
Eh
I'm a sucker for weirdo vocals- what an interesting sound. The Two Dancers track was my favorite but wasn't wowed by the album as a whole. I still ended up listening to a few of their other songs. They were so so.
nothing special to me. odd that this was 2000s, i would have guessed more 80s
It's interesting, the singer shines sometimes with his excellent vocal delivery, other times it's bad. He has his style and ya gotta respect him for that. It's hit or miss. Some songs are sick af, others suck. My fav track is the last one. Because fucking hell it has a STRONG vocal delivery. I think a 3/5 is fair. Since it has it's style and it is interesting enough that I'll come back someday.
Как уже было с каким-то альбомом: интересный инструментал, но просто ужасно бесящий вокал.
early indie pop record same lane as grizzly bear
I really enjoy this musically, but the vocals are so all over the place. The falsettos feel so disjointed most of the time.
Worth a listen but won’t rush back to.
Interesante, entre bueno y muy bueno
Fine
I went into this completely blind--never heard of the artist or album. Wow. So, like, I really like the music! And I could get behind the vocals, AND THEN! Ugh, kooky falsetto chirping/yelling/warble. Is this a concept album? One of the hardest ratings I've had to do--so much to like, but I just don't think I'll be coming back.
I actually really liked the overall sound and vibe of this album. However, something just feels pretentious about the whole ordeal. I think it's probably the voice. I enjoyed the instruments and some of the songs' vocals, but overall, I thought it was something that I would probably hear in an art show. Favorite track: The Fun Powder Plot
I like it
j’ai peut être dormi mais il y avait un truc même si pas mon truc
Pretty decent actually. Prob wont return soon. U2ish, a lil post-punky. Glam vibes
Very soothing album with some surprisingly heavy lyrics. Super clean studio production, isolation of the guitar goes really well with the minimalist percussion. Not in love with the vocal registers. I feel like this album doesn't do enough to be a standout, but still gets a passing grade. The Fun Powder Plot is an excellent opening track.
I really wanted to like it more than I did. I enjoy the music and I think it's well arranged. It's a great example of 2000s British indie rock/dream pop. However, the vocal delivery just doesn't do it for me. It's not that I don't like the style, it just seems to be someone trying to do Morrissey and Thom Yorke at the same time. It comes off as a bit too on the nose. I can't shake the feeling that this band is trying too hard to be the next Radiohead while sounding a bit like the Smiths.
Weird album. I might like it if given more time.
excitedly but actually bad. 3 stars.
Once again, an album is hampered by poor vocals. The music underlying it sounds interesting enough and when the song doesn't feature the lead (?) singer it actually isn't too bad. Not great, but not crap and never really rises about middling.
Very indie
3.5
I liked Wild Beasts. This album is good but not as good as those that followed, particularly Boy King. The falsetto can grate a little after a while but overall an enjoyable listen
really didn't like the lyrics and the vocal delivery was pretty forced, but i really enjoyed the melodies and instrumentals. a good amount of variety too
Rhythms were good. Vocals were haunting. Lyrics were dark. It's not my usual taste, but I enjoyed hearing it.
I liked, but didn't love this album. It was an interesting listen, but somehow seemed derivative of a few other things I love (Jeff Buckley and Talking Heads) and made me just want to listen to them.
28th December 2021 Listened whilst unpacking and cleaning the flat after coming back from LA! Enjoyed this more than I thought I would after the first couple of songs. Memories of Edinburgh with hooting and howling.
Interesting moments, especially those coming from the rhythm section. Guitar work complimented the music and even had a few cool moments, like on track 4. The dark and brooding lyrics mixed well with the instrumentation, although the falsetto screaming was in my opinion in poor taste and a display of improper technique on the part of the singer. Beyond the first half of the album I just couldn't retain much interest and sincerely felt that some of the tracks were half hearted. This could have been a 4 star EP, but it is a 3 star LP given the completely uninteresting second half and... misguided vocal performances.
I liked the vocals, most of everything else was fine, nothing really going on here
Somewhere between Radiohead and MGMT. A nice sound and great vocals, but I couldn't find any standout tracks.
Album indie rock bien ok. Se démarque un peu par son style unique, mais très toothless
Indie pop outfit out of the UK featuring dreamy guitars and a falsetto that can either fit the song or drain you. Two Dancers (i) and (ii) are especially nice listens given the sequencing, the the rest of the album just sort of washes over me. It's nice, but not groundbreaking to me.
for nostalgia related reasons mainly
A bit Elbow-y at times, but without the interesting bits. Inoffensive, but not sure it's worthy of this list! Fav new track: All The King's Men
I feel the need to put this in a box. What is this branch on the late 00s indie tree? Somewhere near Wolf Parade and Future Islands. The taxonomy is familiar - chiming guitars with heavy delay, lots of toms on the drum kit, literary references, $10 words, and most importantly a voice that's intentionally affected in an unplacable direction. Does it feel good to reduce something pretentious into its component parts? You bet your balls it does. This album was great but I couldn't get past the pompous feel. These Beasts are more posh and noble than Wild. Maybe Elegant Beasts? High-Born Beasts? I'm treading into unfamiliar waters here, assuming the singers affect is more than just a dracula impression, but a signal of class and heritage in the Queen's England, and potentially an important component of their acclaim or social message. Maybe Coursera offers a class on UK accents. I appreciated when the Wild Beasts made it sexy at times. B-
between a 3 and 4
Not heard this before. The fun powder plot sounds very mannered. Like they were raised on opera then tried to become an indie band. Not sure if this is interesting and good, or odd and annoying. The same ingredients sound better on Hooting And Howling, which sounds like LCD Soundsystem mixed with Fleet Foxes fronted by Jimmy Somerville. Sadly as it went on it became more and more background noise as I went about my day. It was nice, and innofensive, but I wasn't grabbed by it.
Kind of cool and surprising. I liked how theatric it was
didn't care for the falsetto singing
Has a familiar vibe. Somewhat like a tv on the radio and two door cinema feel. Nothing really stood out, but it was pleasant enough
Although this was rally not for me (the operatic signing, the mystical montage music that was honestly mostly all pretty similar) I have to appreciate the originality, and the lyrics were unusual, and clever.
A bit bland and nothing really. Inoffensive but boring.
It's fine. More interesting than i expected, but still an indie record.
beach house var bättre
I didn’t get to listen to all of this but I enjoyed what I heard. 3*
This was a nice surprise find for me. The vocals were a bit offbeat but that’s ok, others hate it but i don’t mind them at all. Reminds me a lot of Cocorosie with the quirky falsetto. I think this will grow on me with repeated listenings
Not as bad as I thought it might be
I was surprised that I hadn't heard this before. I enjoyed it. Haunting vocals and interesting lyrics
Muzikaal en productie technisch wel goed. Maar over-de-top geluidjes en irritante vocalen.
