Reviews (page 2 of 7)
Although the first song is the real gem, giving this more stars!
I loved this. Super fun. Super fun instrumentals and awesome vocals.
I liked it a lot
This was decent but was all overshadowed by Buffalo Stance and Love Ghetto which I thought were both great.
I never heard of Neneh Cherry. Wikipedia said the album was compared to Madonna and Prince. I'm hearing more Janet Jackson / Paula Abdul / Bobby Brown. The two intro tracks are the the catchy ones: Buffalo Stance and Manchild. The rest is OK. Maybe a high-3 for me, not quite a 4.
If more of the songs were as immediate and catchy as Buffalo Stance. This would easily be a 4+. As is, this might just be 3 that I'm rounding up because I want to like it.
Is it dated? Sure. Is it also groundbreaking. Fuck yeah.
Cool hot fun weirdo aesthete magpie buffalo music.
Całkiem fajne. Wymieszane style. Dla mnie na 4. Chwytliwe
Buffalo Stance is such a banger, album overall gives me a nostalgic feeling, like she could rap on Captain Planet or Darkwing Duck or something and be awesome
Didn't care for it at first but it really grew on me. I was bopping along to a lot of these songs. I think The Next Generation was the standout though.
Neneh Cherry is such a star! Buffalo Stance is just the most incredible song and I don’t think there is anything else that really sounds like it at all. Incredible pop songwriting but thrn she just throws in the most random sounds and accents and everything else imaginable but it all sounds good. I think Robyn once said she wouldn’t exist as a popstar with Neneh Cherry’s influence and trailblazing in Sweden, and so I do think an entire generation of Swedish pop stems from this album. so so cool
Bringing back the memories of youth club disco 5/5. Objectively is this my kind of thing anymore 3 2/5
good. Really good.
Not my usual thing so very surprised with how much I enjoyed it
I will not include the bonus tracks in this review. I was surprised by the number of industry connections that were built into Neneh Cherry's upbringing. Her stepfather, Don, played saxophone for Ornette Coleman and raised a family full of musicians, including future one-hit wonder maker Eagle-Eye Cherry. They befriended members of Talking Heads while staying in Long Island City in Queens. She even met the Slits while Don was out touring with them, and that got to the point where she performed backing vocals with them for a brief stint. After performing in multiple bands and DJ'ing on a reggae pirate station, she decided to pursue a solo career. Raw Like Sushi would serve as her debut record. From the get-go with "Buffalo Stance", it is apparent that this album came out in the late 1980s. The prominent drum machine, synthesizer programming, prevalent sampling, and turntable scratching will clue anyone in to that fact. Yet it is an undeniably catchy song with Neneh boasting a defiant attitude as she rapped and sang about getting by in the inner city, complete with a keyboard line that goes hard. That sentiment is true for the rest of the record, where Neneh came off as a fully-realized performer, sharing her stories of love, upbringing, and motherhood over a smattering of swaggering cuts like the salsa-infused "Kisses on the Wind" and the new jack swing of "Inner City Mama". Again, it's a tad dated and kitsch throughout, but I can't deny the strong hooks and underlying compositions with such a vocal talent in the forefront. I can walk away saying that Neneh Cherry put out a solid debut in Raw Like Sushi. I'm glad she continued to see success into the 1990s and even saw a career resurgence in the 2010s. She really set out to make her name known.
really fun!

Buffalo Stance is of course an all-timer, as hypnotic today as it was back then. Otherwise not an all-timer and very much an interesting product of its time. Don't need to revisit anything but Buffalo Stance but that song alone brings this up to a 4-star.
Sounds like a cross between Micheal Jackson and Queen Latifah. Overall, a really good album. It's not my favorite rap/R/B album, but it's pretty good.
8/10 The first 4 singles are absolute bangers but the rest is alright I guess.
This is good. Really really good. A mish-mash of genre's and styles, but somehow very evocative of the era. Can't say I remember much from 9 year old me beyond the video for "Buffalo Stance", but this is a great fusion of pop / hip-hop.
Sounds both before and after it’s time. But it does slap. But it’s British. Really need a 3.5 button
This was a fun album. It seemed simultaneously really retro and dated and really modern. The beats in particular feel super 80s rap, the lyrics I think could fit in a modern song without seeming super out of place
Nothing here really surpasses Buffalo Stance, but an enjoyable ride anyway.
3.5 but rounding up. Not my usual jam but I really enjoyed the vibe while working late at night.
I'm not sure if this album is good. But I like it, and its typically late 80's-early-hip-hop drum machine breakbeats. Most of the album is worthy a 3-star review, but Manchild is such a fantastic song with a beautiful chord progression that it just barely chucks the whole album in the 4-star category for me. Faves: Buffalo Stance, Manchild, Kisses On The Wind, Heart
I remember when she hit the scene, she was so cool, and the songs were great, man child, buffalo, 7 seconds, inner city, I did actually see her at a festival a few years ago, still looking cool, I do really like this album
It’s rare for an album to be equal parts sincere, intelligent, weird and just completely ridiculous, but Neneh pulls it off. Props for separating itself from a lot of the forgettable new-jack swing of the era by incorporating more from jazz, trip-hop (before it really became popular, mind you), synth-pop and African music, and while the production does bring it a bit down, it’s still a great time.
"Buffalo Stance" is a very very cool track, treading this line between being dated (80s rap flow and record scratches) and timeless (house instrumental and keytar samples on the hook). I really love it. Same goes for its following track, "Manchild" which instantaneously springs to mind images of an underground 90s grotto club with its massive sound. Ultimately I really enjoy the vibe the album strikes in spite of some clunker tracks. She carries a great energy that is really boosted by the Massive Attack instrumentals.
'No money man could win my love / It's sweetness that I'm thinking of.' The detractors would say that this is dated even for '89, but Latifah's debut was dropped in '89 & Monie Love's first in '90, & this is at least on par w/ those classics. Good at both rapping & singing, she's more personality & ad-lib, forerunning both Lauryn & Elliott, than she's virtuosic or outta this world. I listen to this not for the lessons of it, tho they're there & you'd be remiss not to harken, but its winning & timeless flavors. This is no hip-hop record - it's an album w/ rapping on it. She had already been featured on Infected, the The's second, & 70s soul, particularly What's Going On, is clearly in her essence, i.e., she's too authentically all over the place to be a bounded gal.
Bold, stylish, and confidently genre-fluid. It still feels fresh when it leans into its personality, and the best tracks have real punch. A few dated moments, but the attitude carries it.
This is great. The haters are wrong. Bye ✌️
Feels like 80s hiphop mashed with pop. Really enjoyed the entire vibe! No real standout songs though.
Good lord, I still know every word of this; I must have played it a lot in 1989 (I still seem to have it). Also, one of my mothers-in-law was friends with Moki Cherry and babysat baby Neneh in Copenhagen in the 60s. All that said, much of it sounds a little cheesy now, but Buffalo Stance is still a banger, of course.
Undeniably dated, and a bit ridiculous, but I kind of love it. And Buffalo Stance is a 10/10 song.
01) Buffalo Stance - 9,5 02) Manchild - 9,5 03) Kisses on the Wind - 7,5 04) Inna City Mamma - 7,5 05) The Next Generation - 7,0 06) Love Ghetto - 7,0 07) Heart - 9,0 08) Phoney Ladies - 7,0 09) Outré Risqué Locomotive - 7,0 10) So Here I Come - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,80 (78/100) Current ranking: 286/820
Bit too long, very dated but I liked the energy it brought. Would I listen to it often? Probably not.
I did not want to enjoy this album, because I knew it would be an incredibly 80's album. An R&B/dance album that straddles the line between the 80's and 90's doesn't sound enticing. This was a really good album and I enjoyed it. Buffalo Stance, which I knew but didn't know I knew, is a freaking bop. I have not looked it up to see what "Buffalo Stance" means but the song is great. I don't know how I feel about the rapping, not because Neneh Cherry can't rap, but because rapping during this era can feel forced, like it's the "tough" thing for an artist to do. Regardless, Neneh Cherry is not a wallflower and her personality shows through on these songs. Great debut. My favorite songs: Buffalo Stance Manchild The Next Generation Heart Outre Risque Locomotive So Here I Come
I love this album. Fun, brash, exciting. A new voice at the time and still sounds fresh today. Her autobiography is brilliant as well.
interessant, kannte ich noch nicht
Very fun!
Really fun!
Hadn't listened to this one in ages and it was a great reminder of how much fun this record is. We need more Neneh in 2026!!
Really fun pop/hip hop crossover. Raw, honest, and real without being crass or boring. I’d give it 3.5 but that’s not an option so I’ll give it a 4.
she’s funky, i like her
Cool album. You can hear the influences of early hip hop here and a bunch of other electronic music all mashed together.
You open on a hot day. You pan over Brooklyn (Harlem if ya nasty). Old ladies are fanning themselves on the stoop with a glass of iced tea. Children are playing in a fire hydrant that’s open for some reason. Street youths are breakdancing on cardboard next to a boombox. A young man and a beat cop have a minor altercation for little to no reason. This album is what’s playing. Directed by and Starring Spike Lee. Overall I doubt I’ll listen to this again, but this album elicited some very clear mental images and was a fun listen
Fire Like Flames
Nice
A really fun mishmash of the dancier corners of pop, R&B, and rap that anticipates a lot of what came in the next decade, from a soft launch of the Massive Attack aesthetic on the Robert Del Naja-produced "Manchild" to a lot of Robyn's 90s career. Really enjoyed this one.
3.0 but Buffalo Stance is so great it bumps the whole thing up a point
The only reason I know the name Nenah Cherry before I started this project was a line from "The Girls Don't Like The Job" by Kool Keith (aka Keith Thornton) 'You'll get no record deal actin like Neneh Cherry, back to work don't flirt.' Well, now I know that she was also in the Slits for a hot bit. It's a pretty good record totally Hip-Hop for the time and good. She may be getting an extra star that she made it as a reference in a Kool Keith song.
Dope
I liked this back when it was released. I was just a little kid and didn’t understand what she was singing about. Haven’t heard it years, so when it popped up here it was a nice surprise. So, did it hold up? Yes and no. There are some good songs here, but the rapping is dreadful - I feel like I could write and perform better rap parts myself. The themes probably raised a few eyebrows back then, but seem like nonsense now. Having said that, the singing is good and songs like Manchild are great. Pity about the rap. So despite the negatives, I’ll give it a four.
I think this spin on New Jack Swing is really cool and at times unique and brilliant. Some of the songs on here are really great and the first listen of the first song (Buffalo Stance) was such a fun and surprising journey.
Men gøy nok!
Refreshing mix of genres, but not a fan of the 80s vocals and the rythm was a little repetitive, overall a bit repetitive, I like the rap parts though.
Very good.
*Solid R&B/Hip Hop album
I get it.
ill forgive the goofy lyrics on here because 1. bangers 2. swedish
Hip-Hop, Rap
Good if it's your type of thing, I wasn't a fan at the time and not changed
LOL Sweden.
Oooooh yeah, she rules
Fun album with cool vocals, quite uneven
Man, those first four or five songs are really something! I read that this is proto triphop & if that’s true then wtf happened to triphop. This album falls off once the electronic/synth takes a back seat. It’s a 3 star but I listened to that first track no less than like ten times so it gets a full star boost.
Nothing but love for Nenah Cherry. I will say, the music is definitely of a time. But it is some of the best music of this time and moment. Fun listen.
This was an interesting album, it had some catchy songs for sure!
Sons pref : Buffalo Stance, Kisses on the wind, Inna City Mamma & Heart on kiffe la vibe disco mélangé à une ambiance un peu rappé, une forme d'indignation rebondissante
You probably won't believe this, I don't think I do to be fair. I really liked this. Don't know why specifically. She's got a good voice, versatile with style. Great tempo, music played well. It all just fits together into what I found was a great listen. It will be going on my buy if seen list. Not perfect, but a very high 4.
Raw Like Sushi is easily one of the most 80s albums that i have ever heard. It has basically all the things you would expect from an album of it's kind from this era, the samples are what you would expect, the lyrics are pretty cheesy and the production just feels like a product of it's time. It is still a really fun album because of all of this though. Many of the songs could be serious bops and Cherry's voice also really managed to fit these songs pretty well. I also don't think that there is a single song here that i would consider bad as they still all at least had parts that i enjoyed. I wouldn't say that this album is perfect but it still is a really fun listen. Best Song: Outre Risque Locomotive Worst Song: So Here I Come
This one’s got energy!! Pop, soul, hip hop, and a hell of a lot scratching. The vocal performance is far from traditional but it’s just what this record demands, and Neneh has no qualms about taking a god damn sledgehammer to the conventional. What a bang to close out the 80s. Listened to: on mushrooms on the 2 train. Favorite tracks: Buffalo Stance, The Next Generation, So Here I Come
I loved this one. Real good.
Hella good vibes when you’re stuck on a boss, I personally enjoy this style cause I love them funky
love the how you can hear the 90s slipping in at parts and then it goes back to being very 80s
Wasn't expecting this to be such a banger!
Prince if sung by Mimi from Rent. It’s not Mozart, but fuck it, I kinda liked it.
Pretty good album, gave me pretty positive vibes troughout
Taught me never to trust girls who suck beer thru straws
Obviously two massive hits begin this album and it would be difficult to sustain this. I quite like this album as it is a good example of this particukar female hip hop genre from the time. Interesting tracks about inner city life from a female perspective.
10 year old me thought this was cool, so who am I to say he's wrong. Though I doubt he knew what most of the songs were about.
Great album. Good mix of freestyle, early rap, pop and other popular generes. Kind of confussed about the whole spanish thingy cause she is Swedish
Favorite Track: Buffalo Stance
Neneh Cherry is a cross-genre talent and I really enjoyed this album. I've seen comparisons between her, Madonna, and Prince, and honestly, I see it. There are a lot of elements of the backing tracks that feel so quintessentially 90s hip hop, which come off as a little cheesy today, but it doesn't distract from her performance too much. Favorite tracks: Buffalo Stance, Manchild, Inna City Mamma
Feel like I'm back at Skater's Choice
This was such a fun rap album to listen to with so many bops and jams! I love discovering new artists and albums so I will definitely be listening to this one again and recommending it to others if you like female rappers or the genre in general.
I haven't heard that one in a long time. I liked it then, and I like it now. Some sounds and instruments are a bit dated, but most of the tracks don't sound like they are nearly 30 years old.
8/10, kinda cheesy, but also genuinely good rap
Still sounds super fresh despite also sounding super 1989.
grooovy and also hell yeah the sounds are very good to the brain and so is her voice and the words, solid 3.75
Sex, funk, in your face attitude and one of the all time classics of the 80s. Some of the lyricism is a little on the nose but she pulls it off and tonally this album doesn't up, all of one piece without feeling repetitive.
Tons of energy. Overwhelming joy. I mean, really overwhelming. Stuffed full of great melodies and rhythm and power. I honestly wish we had a couple ballads to take it down a notch. 3.5/5
Aww, a wee blast from the past. Love her attitude and style and there are some cracking collaborators on here. Starts to grate slightly towards the end. Buffalo Stance is an enduring banger though
Feisty raps. Blammin beats. Smexy album cover. Squishy, smexy album title. First track and main hit single Buffalo Stance is the turbocharged crown jewel here but there’s a good stack of fair cool, old-skool hip hoppity dancey RnB goodness sloshing around here. Also Massive Attack-adjacent with Andrew ‘Mushroom’ Vowles on turntables and Robert Del Naja aka 3D aka Banksy co-writing Manchild.
I actually enjoyed this way more than I expected. To my surprise, I knew the opening track and it was also fun to hear that Stevie Wonder sample on Inna City Mamma. All songs were very groovy and although the album is quite long, I was not once boring while listening. This is not something I’d normally listen to, and I’m not sure if and when I would ever return to this, but it was a nice experience. It’s like a 3.5 but I’ll round up.
Great 80's beats
Pas eu trop le temps d’écouter
Highlights "Buffalo Stance" und "Manchild". Interessanter Mix aus Pop, Rap und Dance-Musik. 4/5
Some good stuff on here, generally liked pretty much every track and thought she her unique perspective helped set it apart from other contemporary 80s pop, as well as the blending of styles. Unfortunately, the production is very dated and of its time which doesn't help. Pretty good listen overall though
Delightfully unique as not a lot of Latina girls were making rap around this time and with it only being 1989 there was still a lot of room to experiment. That is the proper word to explain this album: experimental. Not much that will excite but a solid album with nothing obscenely bad that will show you a bit of what happens when a new genre is being invented.
In a Buffalo Stance forever
Great blast from the past. My feet feel like moving on this one.
What a nice surprise! I had heard bits and pieces over the years but the whole album is a new discovery. Jams like Michael Jackson. Enjoyed it a lot!
The things you learn from this endeavor! Like Neneh Cherry is Swedish. It's not surprising she was influenced by Prince, I kept catching glimpses of this album cover and thought it was Prince from Parade era. Initially thought that was Prince on My Bitch. All this is to say I mostly knew Neneh Cherry from the Red, Hot, and Blue album but I'm so glad I had this listen.
Not my thing, but what a banget
I love this kinda 90s dance pop
Ooh, I'd forgotten what a tune Kisses On The Wind is. Neneh Cherry was very cool, to 20yo me, and I still think she's cool. She's always struck me as an entirely authentic force. I'm not nearly as bothered by the 1989 production as some of the 'top' reviews; I love the sound! A star off for a couple of weaker tracks, but basically, good songs, good times.
Wonderful dance music. I miss my club days (nights).
Fireeee
Buffalo Stance slaps, wow.
Buffalo Stance and Kisses On The Wind are strong starters. Its got pretty strong pop chops, Next Generation, Heart. A really solid album!
I'm jammin'
I really like the beats! very funky, very 80s inspired. I had never heard of Neneh Cherry but her energy is empowering, energizing, and sassy.
It certainly does feel like the epitome of the 80s all rolled up into one package. As a child of the 80s I totally dig it. Fave: Buffalo Dance, although that bit in the middle always made me think she was British.
Wow, I actually really liked this one. It's like a better Queen Latifah. Definitely dated quite a bit, but still lots of fun
Tight beats, another workout playlist album
genre: hip hop. sooo fun and good. enjoyed the lyrics
It was fun I'm not gonna lie
almost comically of Exactly its moment in the late 80s (not a good time for drum production unfortunately) but never in an unappealing way for me! very fun and jumpy and jittery, and neneh is an absolute delight,,,her strange and eclectic career isnt Overtly shown here (u might never know she was in punk bands) but it is present in the freewheeling musicality. and her presence is so commanding...sort of a diva, but mostly a proud worldly-wise badass mom lady??? this wasnt like a crazy revelatory experience for me or anything but deffo one of the more memorable personalities i didnt even know about before starting this
positively dripping with personality! & it's not vapid either, it's earnest, focused, fun & concerned with having something to say. p good!
Old school hip hop rap vibes that groove so well and keep your head bopping. Reminds me of the style of Janet Jackson and Salt N' Pepper. Never heard of Neheh Cherry. Enjoyed this.
Third and last day on a road trip. No reviews today either. This album doesn't really fit the road trip landscape, but it's still really good. It has elements of hip-hop and R&B and her voice sounds really sexy! 4 stars today!
Nice
These music videos were something lol I like her lyrics and beats. 3.5/5
Typically this kind of sound palette would put me off but I loved this album. Totally took me by surprise. She's a great MC as well as powerful singer and spans genres between pop and early hip hop with her vocal style, which is mirrored by the production moving between synth pop and hip hop collage of beats and samples. Then the lyrics are a total surprise, particularly the track about The Next Generation, talking about the uniting trials facing parents and the importance of their work. Plus it had a real sense of humour; the end of the original album (My Bitch) left me laughing as it faded out, with its ironic acknowledgement of how weird it is for a swede and a brit to be adopting these American accents.
Love this album. Personal favourites are Kisses On The Wind, Love Ghetto and Buffalo Stance 4/5
Whip smart a proper pop lp with four great singles including one for the ages in buffalo stance. Job absolutely done.
I did not expect to like this as much as I did. It's damn hooky, and even though it's a product of its time, the raps have a pretty good flow. Buffalo Style is cool, and I like Heart too. It's fun and often funny, I liked it a bunch.
Very good.
#54 Like the vibe.
Painfully 80's with chunky beats and over emphasized rapping, but a very solid entry in the 80's rap hall of fame.
One hit wonder tho?
Damn that's 90's
This is kind of awesome. I really like the beats. And her rap/lyrics are pretty awesome. VERY 80s.
mmm
Solid 4. Gotta love the late 89s hip hop vibes
Bangin
Hip hopnew jack swing. Un poco cansina.
I know that this album was compared to Prince and Madonna, but I kinda feel it's closer to Prince. There's a wide range of music here, which is always a plus. It's hampered a bit by the dated production, but it still resonated with me. She has a goods flow, and the beats (although a bit dated) still rocked. I had always seen this album back in the day. I probably would not have enjoyed it back then, but now I definitely do. Top tracks: "Buffalo Stance," "Outré Risqué Locomotive," "Here I Come"
A uniquely fun slice out of time.
A fun enjoyable listen.
Listened to over and over on cassette when this came out (thanks Lynn!)
What a great voice. Love it.
Always loved Buffalo Stance--it's such a strange song, almost impenetrable. Most of this album is like this and the songs are richer the deeper you go. I love Phoney Ladies, Love Ghetto, Outre Risque Locomotive. Solid and I wish I had bought the album back in the day.
-He’ll yeah bubblegummy Europop/ rap… 6th grade me would’ve eaten this up -I still really like it actually, the energy is so fun and it has some surprisingly poignant social commentary lul -Favorites are Manchild, The Next Generation, and Heart
Pretty solid, kinda surprised she didn't make it bigger in the states. Great mix of 80s pop and early hip hop
1001 Albums Day 10 The summer of '89 boiled and distilled and thus is best enjoyed with a glass of Hi-C and a copy of Golden Axe. While the style of Hip hop on this release is certainly dated by modern standarts, it's earnest execution and commitment makes it still very enjoyable and just great fun. Neneh has an interesting twist on the classic 80s Rap formula, by being both a great rapper by the standarts of the time and great R&B singer by the standarts of the time, and throughout the album the combinations possible by mixing those two are explored satisfyingly and thoroughly. My biggest complaint is that, very much in line with Hip Hop of the era, several of the songs are 1-2 minutes too long, extended unnecessarily by running the chorus back, followed by the instrumental, followed by the chorus and so on. But at the end of the day, the beats are swanky, the emotion is for real and the 'tude is wicka-wicka-wicked. Favs: Kisses on the Wind, Buffalo Stance, The Next Generation 82/100
another blast from the past
Having just observed some bison in Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, it gave some new meaning to what exactly a "buffalo stance" is. This was an enjoyable trip back to late '80s pop.
What is he loooiiike?! Great question Neneh, I'm like someone who enjoyed this album to a surprising degree. Buffalo Stance remains a banger, and to follow it up with Manchild is a super-strong start. After that, it never quite reaches those heights again, although Heart is excellent. It's let down quite badly with The Next Generation, which sounds suspiciously like at best a message of 'it's morally incumbent on us all to have children' and at worst a straight up Pro Life message. But leaving aside my distaste on that front, a very good and enjoyable album.
fun 80's stereotype
Good album
I dug the grooves and she kept me interested throughout. It was a while since I listened but I think my favorite was Heart
It was ok but pretty forgettable. Not sure why it’s on the list. Solid 3.5
I thought this was fun but forgettable. Reminded me of spice girls
She set the bar too high with Buffalo Stance. But that bar was so damn high that it makes this a high rated album for me.
This was a wonderful surprise! Fully had never heard of this, but was a great, high-energy way to start my morning. The songs are catchy, the lyrics full of humor and fun wordplay, the music funky and the samples fun! Not to sound reductive but kinda like if Madonna were black. Points off for some…weird politics in a couple songs! But I’ll just skip those on a relisten! Most of the time just good fun! And the sister of the “Save The Night” guy, apparently!
such a vibe until some of the lyrics are like 😳
Would have been 5/5 but i had to take a star off for the last song being so outrageously misogynistic for no reason
The most 80s of albums. But seriously pretty good fun, even if it does get a bit tiresome by the end. Buffalo Stance is a tune though.
8/10 As someone who was just discovering music around this time, this one is pandering to me. Still really good though British pop music made by people who love early hip hop 80s production is spot on, the drum programming is excellent Start of super strong with Buffalo Stance and Manchild She knows her way around a hook and chorus Some of the verses and lyrics aren’t exactly deep, but there is no pretension here Best: Buffalo Stance
This was really cool! I didn't expect this album to be as old as it is
4 stars. I dug this one more than I thought. Really like the production and energy paired with the lyrics of womanhood.
Based on the description, I was thinking that this would be another mid-tier hip hop album that hasn't aged well. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoy new jack swing and it felt short enough that it didn't fall into the traps of the eras. A nice breathe of fresh air.
There's so much on this album that's corny as hell, but it all works so well together. Read about Neneh performing Buffalo Stance while pregnant at an awards show and brushing off reporters that were trying to make a stink about it. This woman was almost 20 years ahead of her time and it shows. Great music, just wish the production wasn't as badly dated and her flow had some more nuance to it. I was surprised by how much I liked it, especially after the first minute of Buffalo Stance.
Cool sound. Reminded me of prince a little bit. Fun listen but nothing really stand out
Released in 1989, Neneh Cherry's debut album, "Raw Like Sushi," remains a landmark of artistic innovation and genre-bending brilliance. More than just a collection of catchy tunes, it's a potent blend of social commentary, personal exploration, and sonic experimentation that continues to resonate with listeners today. Lyrical Prowess: Cherry's lyrical style is both playful and profound. She seamlessly switches between singing and rapping, tackling diverse themes with wit and honesty. Songs like "Buffalo Stance" and "Manchild" are social critiques, challenging gender stereotypes and consumerism. "7 Seconds" addresses racial prejudice with a powerful simplicity, while "Kisses on the Wind" explores themes of loss and longing with poignant vulnerability. Cherry's lyrics are never afraid to be bold and unconventional, often laced with personal anecdotes and cultural references that create a sense of intimacy and authenticity. Musical Tapestry: The music of "Raw Like Sushi" is a vibrant tapestry of influences. It draws from hip-hop, pop, funk, and even elements of world music, creating a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly unique. The album is characterized by its use of samples, synthesizers, and layered percussion, creating a dynamic and textured soundscape. Tracks like "Stop the Rock" showcase driving beats and infectious melodies, while "For Life" takes a more introspective approach with its use of piano and strings. Cherry's vocals are a key element, delivering lyrics with both confidence and vulnerability, adding an emotional depth to the music. Production Prowess: The production on "Raw Like Sushi" is masterfully crafted by Cherry and her collaborator, Cameron McVey. They utilize innovative techniques like sampling and layering, creating a cohesive sound that is both playful and sophisticated. The use of electronic elements alongside traditional instruments gives the album a timeless quality, avoiding the limitations of a specific genre or era. McVey's production choices are never gratuitous, always serving the purpose of enhancing the mood, message, and overall impact of the song. Thematic Exploration: "Raw Like Sushi" explores a range of social and personal themes, making it a deeply thought-provoking listen. The album challenges societal norms, particularly regarding gender and race. It tackles issues like consumerism, sexism, and prejudice with an unflinching honesty that was both refreshing and necessary in the late 1980s. Furthermore, the album delves into personal themes of love, loss, and self-discovery, revealing a vulnerability that connects with listeners on an emotional level. Lasting Influence: "Raw Like Sushi" left a significant mark on the music world. It paved the way for female artists to be more experimental and outspoken, influencing artists like Bjork, Missy Elliot, and countless others. The album's innovative blend of genres also anticipated the rise of alternative rock and trip-hop in the 1990s. "Raw Like Sushi" continues to be celebrated for its creative spirit, social consciousness, and lasting influence. Pros: Genre-bending innovation: The album's eclectic sound and use of diverse influences create a unique and engaging listening experience. Strong lyrical content: Cherry's lyrics are well-written, thought-provoking, and address relevant social and personal themes. Stellar production: McVey's production is innovative, cohesive, and expertly complements the music and vocals. Enduring influence: The album's impact can be seen in the work of numerous artists across different genres. Cons: Accessibility: The album's experimental nature and diverse soundscapes might not appeal to listeners who prefer more conventional pop music. Dense lyrics: Some listeners might find the layered references and wordplay in the lyrics challenging to decipher. Conclusion: "Raw Like Sushi" is not just an album; it's a cultural touchstone. It's a testament to the power of artistic integrity, social commentary, and sonic exploration. While the album might have its niche aspects, its enduring influence and undeniable artistic merit solidify its place as a modern classic. Neneh Cherry's debut serves up a sound that is as delicious as it is disorienting, and one that continues to inspire generations of listeners and artists alike.
had me dancing the whole way through
This was a fun bouncy album. Great flashback.
A very unique album blending styles into its own amorphous genre. A sort of proto trip hop affair especially when you look at the list of collaborators. Sounds just as out there now as it did 3 decades ago.
Pretty fun record
Very 80s sounding, which was nostalgic but some of the lyrics were kinda cheesy, although nice there wasn't any swears.
This album is not my genre at all, but I think Neneh Cherry should have been a household name here in the US. Her mix of rap, pop, synth, and other popular genres is thoughtful and interesting if not a bit dated. There are moments here that remind me of Michael Jackson, and other moments that indicate that she was very much into a wide range of music that may have been on the periphery for most people.
It’s a great travel-back in time, it gets a high rating for me just because of Buffalo Stance which I’ve always loved. I hadn’t really heard the rest of the album and was pretty pleasantly surprised how much I like the rest. It prompted me to seek out ever more so I spent even more time going through her catelog. Great stuff.
4-
Still a very good late 80s album - perhaps it sounds a little less fresh to me than it did in 1989, but the first two songs are classics, while the other tracks are solid 3*-4* songs.
Fun album. Buffalo Stance and Manchild are still standouts for me, but the rest of the songs are pretty solid too.
That was actually pretty good. A lot of really cool sounding hiphop songs. 7/10
Following in the footsteps of Abba and at the start of the Swedish pop revolution. The mixing of rap, pop and other music styles is very well done in the album. Her rapping style reminds me of a Lin Manual song. Saxophone. The beats are fire. Some of the songs give me Fresh Prince vibes. Highlights: Buffalo Stance Inna City Mama* The Next Generation Heart Outre Risqué Locomotive* Genuinely enjoyed this album and would not have known about it without something like this.
I'm not usually the biggest fan of hip-hop, but this was a great album. Tracks such as "Manchild" and "The Next Generation" were a couple that stood out for me.
Not usually what I listen to, but bangs nevertheless. Buffalo Stance definitely is my favorite.
It seemed like Neneh was going to be the next big thing. Turns out she was too cool for thi particular universe.
Even though I was born in 88 and never hearing this before, this album really has me feeling nostalgic. It is pure distilled late 80s/early 90s. I love it. This is probably the best of the bboy trip-hop style music. It's catchy, smart and a time capsule of a genre that is mostly gone today. I would suggest this to anyone who may have missed it from back when it was released.
Catchy beats that I probably would’ve liked more if I spent more time listening
Hey Google, play all the music from the 80s in one album. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Buffalo Stance Date listened: 18/11/23
The most 1989 album ever. Still a fun and vibrant set.
Cherry's flows are old ("classic"); Production is vintage. Raw certainly has more interesting music than its siblings, a little less breadth than it thinks it does, that last point only upping the British charm of the thing.
My wife loved it
It's a total banger. I love it. Buffalo Stance is such a tune.
Delightfully fresh and funky, brilliantly upbeat.
Pretty funky. Pretty soulful. Pretty good. 3.5 rounded up.
Headphones made this especially joyful. The detail in the synth instrumentation and the rhythmic and energetic grooves plus the really fresh attitude Cherry brought to music is just a wonderful throw back to the era. Some defining sounds of the era which remain so fun to listen to.
The first time I heard Neneh Cherry’s voice was on a 1982 single by Rip Rig & Panic, entitled You’re My Kind Of Climate. Great track & I often wondered during the 80’s what had happened to her. Then this album happened. What a terrific record. Buffalo Stance still stands up as one of the great 80’s singles. In fact the first 3 tracks on the album were all successful singles. Apart from Buffalo Stance, my favourites here are Love Ghetto - any song with repetitive sporting metaphors will do me - and Heart. So many winners on this album.
Tegner godt
really good vibes throughout tbh. some fresh prince theme-esque rapping but not really a bad thing.
Really enjoyed this Years ahead of all other late 80s hip hop
This is really of its time, but is full of bops with a few questionable songs (looking at you Next Generation). Kinda hate the record scratch production but I will give this the benefit of the doubt for the era!! 4/5
Fantastic! I think I'd heard her name before but don't recall hearing any of her work. Such a cool blending of 80s pop, R&B, and hip-hop. I'll have to hear more of her albums. Impressive stuff here.
As someone who generally doesn't like hiphop, I found this album very easy listening. There's something very oldschool about it, yet at the same time, the mix of other styles makes it fresh and interesting. This is actually more of a 3 for more, but I'll just add on another star because it's so rare that I find hiphop enjoyable.
I was expecting something bubblegummmy, but it's a pleasant surprise.
Definitely a real bridge of 80s and 90s styles. It was all quite cool and catchy, though a few songs were weaker. Buffalo Stance is a classic though. Favourite: Buffalo Stance
"Raw Like Sushi" is the debut album by Swedish musician Neneh Cherry. The album is noted for its distinctive and eclectic mix of genres and trends across pop music. Although, put in the hip hop, new jack swing and R&B categories. Neneh sings and raps and is accompanied by sets of sounds (that's for sure) including pianos, synthesizers, brass horns, guitar and percussions. The lyrics are based on her experience as a Mother and her education and upbringing. The songs were mostly written by Neneh and her husband Cameron McVey (Booga Bear). Neneh introduces the hi-hat and tambourine and we're off with "Buffalo Stance." She's rapping and then goes into pop. Very, very catchy and original song. Well-timed synth noises and melody lines. The title is based on the fashion stylist Ray Petri and the lyrics to stand up for your rights. The second single "Manchild" is slower, almost ballad territory. Beats. Scratching. Synths. Neneh composed this on a casino keyboard. The man needs to grow up. "Kisses on the Wind" has a very 80's dance-pop feel. A good use of blending and sampling of songs by Ralph Mc Donald and The Jimmy Caster Bunch. "Inna City Mamma" combines hip hop and jazzy piano. Nice singing. About growing up in the city. "Heart" uses turntables for the beats and scratching. A good example of the new jack swing style combining hip hop and R&B. Neneh is essentially a dual singer here either fighting over a guy and/or fighting her heart. There are a lot of positives to this album: the switching between rapping and swinging, variety of styles -hip hop, jazz, R&B, soul (fusion approach), unique, enjoyable pop-style music and Neneh singing voice sounding a lot like Madonna. It is very 80's pop sounding at times but, overall, a very enjoyable listen today.
W?
Hip hopnew jack swing. Un poco cansina.
Very cool album! Not quite my style, but it is a shame Neneh didn't reach the popularity of others of her era (Prince, Madonna, etc.).
I will probably never get back to this, but it's still pretty impressive, all things considered. Hip-hop vibes before hip-hop was "officially" invented, 90s rythms before 90s happened - all somehow implanted into 80s standards.
Cracking album
Ég dýrka þetta albúm. Verð 16 ára aftur við hlustunina.
Fun, super feminist, late 80s pop/rap here. It's not really my favorite kind of music to listen to, and I'm not sure I'll be coming back to this one often, or ever, but I do feel like it's worth an extra star just for the confident feminism, which is rare in this genre. I feel like the production is a bit dated and it all sounds a bit same same to me, but the lyrics are killer. I'd give it a 3.5/5 but I'm rounding up because of the great content.
So much fun, dated, but great
Not my thing, but actually I quite nice.. reminds me off my childhood
Super fun!
Hip-hop y R&B. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Stranger song is such a good track. I do like Leonard Cohen, been a while since i heard this. Knocking it down to a 4 though because it gave the animal house vibes when Belushi smashes that fellas guitar.
liked and still like whole album, smart version of bubblepop, produced well and e.g. Manchild and Buffalo Stance and Next Generation as strong as when released. She was part of underrated Rip Rig+Panic, bit less smooth.
This is better than I expected.
Buffalo stance is one of my all time jams. You can’t help but move when that song comes on!!
I love her sound & voice. Big fan of this album.
Pas mal!
Good, I enjoyed the album, especially the instrumentals.
Solidly good album, she's got a great voice and the grooves are excellent. 4 stars.
I need to wear more neon 90’s gear
Weird late 80's pop with huge late 80s rap influence
HL: "Buffalo Stance", "Manchild", "Inna City Mamma", "Love Ghetto", "Outré Risqué Locomotive" 1st instinct was to say I've never listened or heard of this artist before, but a lil Spotify sleuthing says she was featured in "We Will Always Love You" by the Avalanches (one of my favourite lockdown finds). For one track, but still. I didn't anticipate to enjoy this as much as I did, after all, what other new jack swing have I listened to?- Michael Jackson? That is probably bc this is music for moving, and not sitting & contemplating. Good thing I was walking home from work when I heard this. "Manchild" is probably #1 for me on this album. "Locomotive" near the end is a really fun track as well. December 11, 2022
So perfectly 80s
Quite good stuff!
Thought it was a'right at the time. In retrospect, I enjoyed the singles and began considering it a classic. On actual listening it's got some great tracks but doesn't consistently hit every ball out the park I like the originality it shows.
This was a fun album. Not my usual genre but I really liked the feel of the album and was entertained the whole way through.
Great lyricism in this album and it was clear to the listener what her messages were. Loved her vibe!
Really enjoyed it. Wasn’t expecting a vibrant synth pop based album and it delivered!
Hip-hop y R&B. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Hip hopnew jack swing. Un poco cansina.
Great classic rap, meaningful lyrics
Rätt Lit
I am a big fan of this release. I knew of Neneh Cherry through Rip, Rig & Panic. It took me forever to find the RR&P release back in the day. The disparate elements she integrated was nor commonplace at the time. Nor was the focus on womanhood. At a time when there were clearly drawn lines between pop and what would become hip-hop, Neneh Cherry blurred the lines in the best possible way.
Really enjoyable late 80s / early 90s RnB vibes.
Still sampled today in some dance songs.
Never have heard of this, but I kinda love this... Sounded like a better version of one of the many Prince proteges from the 80s.
Had a couple of late 80s albums this week taking me back to my youth. But really striking how contemporary they sound these days, ten maybe 15 years ago this would sound as dated as hell but not now, aside from the odd scratch noise. This sound is everywhere in modern music. All time bangers front and centre, it's a blast at the beginning. I drift off halfway through as nothing can compete with the absolute classic singles particularly, but it's still a great, fun, pop album.
A pretty slammin early hip hop album! I enjoyed it from top to bottom, although Buffalo Stance is hands down the best track. Feels like a bit of a misnomer to call her "Swedish" when she was raised in the US and has spent her entire adult life in London, but that's on wikipedia and not 1001 albums.
A pretty fun album, including some huskier wails. I’m sure I recognised the first track from when I was very young
Pièces préférées: Buffalo Stance, Manchild, The Next Generation, Heart et So Here I Come
This one caught me by surprise. I loved the '80s pop that slipped into the hip-hop. The songs were catchy as hell.
3rd Listen. Great album. Brings back a lot of memories of the times. :) 4/5
I really enjoyed this record! It sits within this liminal space between hip hop, R & B, and dance while also feeling like the perfect decade-spanning record. There's a few misfires, but overall, the vibe was something I could get behind. "Buffalo Stance" has not been far from my mind since my first listen! Favourite tracks: Buffalo Stance, Love Ghetto, Phoney Ladies, So Here I Come
loved this
Swedish punk? Who knew? Very talented with a cool mix of rapping and singing, she’s tackling some big issues but also showing a good sense of humour. I didn’t know she was so involved with Massive Attack and the Wild Bunch. A little bit drawn out and dated for top marks though.
Nice surprise. Gets kinda boring throughout, but pretty cool.
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Buffalo stance, Love ghetto
Funky and catchy. Absolutely not a genre for me, but this album somehow won me over - so a 4/5 from me is probably a strong 5/5 for somebody who's generally a fan of hip hop. Heart's my favorite track because it sounds like a Phineas and Ferb song.
Hadden die plaat thuis, goede teksten
Classic in its day. Very good now. 4/5
Lekker album! Heerlijke popmuziek, goede zang, vrolijke muziek. Precies zoals ik 80s popmuziek voor ogen heb. Geweldig!! ****
Like Madonna, but way cooler
What's 'e like? WHAT IS 'E LIKE? Buffalo Stance is a six (all hail Bomb The Bass), the rest is a three-star pottage of late '80s production tics, and none the worse for it.
Salt 'N Pepa meets Prince?! Hell yeah. The sound is definitely of it's time, but we all need some cheesy hip hop in our lives! My top pick is of course 'Buffalo Stance' but I also really liked 'Manchild', 'Love Ghetto'. and 'Outré Risqué Locomotive'. This is more of a 4.5 - I think a 10 star scale would be better!
This is kind of like a female inversion of Beastie Boys MCing, in the best possible way. This was a lot of fun to listen to, provocative and tongue in cheek the whole way through
I enjoyed the music but the lyrciss were a bit basic.
So many memories!
Love this album. Eminently danceable. And thought provoking. This album got me through that summer. 4.5.
Из наимение понравившихся могу обозначить The Next Generation, Heart и отвратительную закрывашку My Bitch.
Buffalo stance...wow so good. Such a fun vibe, this chick can rap and her confidence oozes.
Sounds great, my kind of thing. I didn’t know how varied her music is, and different from the radio hits Manchild, Woman and 7 Seconds.
Extremely catchy
Fun album. It sounds exactly how I think 80s-90s transition should have sounded like.
in a normal situation, I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much, but I was vibing this shiiiit
Heart reminded me of BUSTED from Phineas and Ferb
Buffalo stance!
Pretty corny but a fun listen overall 7/10
I really enjoyed this! Bit high energy but fun. 8 for me
Another 7 where I considered an 8, but I just can't see myself ever wanting to relisten to this even though it was pretty fun the first time.
Again, it was good but songs were long and the album didn’t really feel like it needed to be an album. 7
Does this sound like Janet Jackson?".
this album was surprisingly good! lot of catchy songs, and the beats had me moving through the entire album
Such good hip hop beats, OG female rapper
pretty iconic 80s dance music, some songs were a bit dragged out and didn’t have a great sound listening 40 years later, but a really clean classic funky hip hop sound that makes ya wanna dance ;)
Sehr Gut!
Cool late 80s vibes. Hear a lot of things that would shape early 90s hip hop. Definitely her own style. Should come back to this one
1/28 Great, eclectic 80s genre-mix of an album. Standout Tracks: Buffalo Stance, Inna City Momma, The Next Generation, Phoney Ladies, Outré Risqué Locomotive
nice and fun
useless
Interesting as an artefact, in large part because it speaks to how big the Minneapolis sound got and the influence it wiggled through culture. Neneh Cherry is kinda doing more rap here, but the beats reminded me of the new jack swing sound so much that it kept it firmly in a lane and a moment rather than something so on the cusp of pop-rap going big. Now the trouble is, I do think a lot of the songs wind up sounding similar, and like they run past their ideas even with that, so starting with your best song and single is a smart choice for a sales pitch but also one that doesn’t succeed in making it feel like a good Album that I’d want to come back to.
The instrumentals and her voice are great but her lyrics and art direction in general not my cup of tea. Easy E style raping with R&B elements and more cheerful jingles. The more refined classy tunes are fine but a lot of the less refined songs that are more hiphop oriented really dont sit well with me. While I can see how infulential it was it didnt age well for me. Songs that I would maybe like to hear again are: Inner City Mama (well rounded groovy tune) Outre Risque Locomotive (very 80s but good lyrics) So Here I Come (Vibe makes up for simplicity of rap, instrumental is unique)
