Reviews (page 4 of 7)
I’m not sure if I am proud or ashamed, but I still know all the words to ‘Buffalo Stance’. That, and the fact that I also like the song kisses on the wind or why I will give this a three instead of a two.
it was ok, not my style.
Definitely other stuff from this era that had aged a lot better, but considering this is the late 80s we are talking about, it could be SO much worse. Still a fun listen overall.
Look, I don't know. I just found it so hard to give a shit about this album. Like, musically speaking, I don't think it's all bad. There's some parts in there I like. Y'know, this new jack swing, hip hop/pop thing... But on the whole, I'unno — I just found that as it went on my expression got more and more stoney as I started to wonder more when this thing was going to end. I'll just tell you my problem with it: Neneh's rapping came across to me as annoyingly juvenile. I mean, in terms of delivery she's not doing much different from any other poppy MC of the day, but, like, with her exact tone of voice, I feel like I should be watching some random teen star that I don't know a single thing about bouncing around on the Disney Channel. It grated on me, but not even in any way that made me particularly upset. Jus'... Blurgh, I just wanted this thing to be over with. I mean, I don't wanna be too hard on this whole thing, 'coz I do thing Neneh has a very nice singing voice, and, again, there were parts of the instrumental I do dig. And, y'know, it's not even like I'm saying I don't like a woman doing boisterous new jack swing raps like the dudes, no. It's jus', I'unno. It's juvenile and bratty in a way that just wasn't any fun to me. And the fact that some of these songs felt like they went on forever didn't help much either, goodness... Y'know, I'm sure for 1989 this album was fun. Have some singles tearing up the dance floor, y'know... But in 2025, it's not even that bad, I feel like I could've gone my entire life without hearing this. Pbbbt, I'unno. Lemme move on to the next album already.
I’m at a 3.5 that I’ll bump down to a 3. I really don’t have that much to say – this is a fully competent hip-hop album from 1989. It’s definitely dated as one from how heavy the instrumentals use Roland synth patches, drum machines loops & MIDI instruments… but also, what other album is gonna give you a line like “cramp my freedom” nowadays? As far as Neneh Cherry herself goes, she’s got a good singing voice & a good rap flow. When she’s on, she’s on, and she sounds great to listen to. As far as the songs themselves go, I think this album finds a strong base for each track to start on, and then sort of coasts on that base for a while – almost every track here feels like it starts to spin the wheels about 70% of the way through, lyrically, instrumentally & vocally. That sense of “spinning the wheels” is why I’m more inclined to bump down to a 3, though I’d love to leave it right at a 3.5. This is a fun album to listen to, but too many tracks feel a little too long, some of them feel a little lost lyrically, & ultimately, a decent number of tracks aren’t very compelling once they reach those points. It’s still a really enjoyable listen, at least for me, because this is 100% a product of 1989. A few tracks here are so lyrically dopey & preachy that they sort of won me over just for having big “song made for a fake boy band on a Disney Channel show” energy, and some of them won me over because the instrumentals feel like they would’ve fit right into a dance scene in a John Hughes coming of age movie. So, yeah: fun album, fun listen, but not a very compelling one. If a few tracks clicked a little better, I’d be at a 4, and maybe they’ll click better in the future, but for now, I’ll bump it down to a 3. I still liked it, though. Not sure that I HAD to listen to it before I died, but I’m glad I did.
Good in places, fun at times but there are a few tracks that were like, oh dear. Not bad and Buffalo Stance is a banger!
Good
Album art: 3
It was an ok listen but very much an 80s pop album so didn’t do much for me. I guess the standouts if you want to call them that was "Buffalo Stance" and "Manchild".
Not to be a Puritan, but "You lose a guy, you move into the larder / You got no style, why don't you try a little harder / Chocolates, bananas, donuts and salami / Ain't gonna fit 'cause you're full of baloney" is both the funniest thing I've heard in weeks and a colder burn than a lot of more explicit diss lines I've heard lately. The rest of this album was like, "fine - fun 80s/90s stuff - a bit long" but that verse jumped out at me and I was cracking up laughing.
I've got 2 and a half more tracks of this album. It was alright. 3 stars.
So 90s but it has its moments
Nfm
A lot of 80s hip-hop leaves much to be admired, and this album feels almost like a parody of that style of music. It’s got a great energy, but the lyrics are so cheesy. If you like rap music about getting good grades in school and uncontroversial social messages like “public libraries are cool”, then this is the album for you.
50/50
Pretty decent.
An album new to me, though I'm familiar with Neneh Cherry's excellent work in Rip Rig & Panic and with The Thing. While I think Neneh Cherry is pretty good, I don't think this album has stood up well to the passage of time.
Spunky, feisty and dated, but pretty enjoyable 3.2
Like this, would have loved it even more in the 80s!
coming right at the zeitgeist of the whole Madchester craze, it's somehow emblematic of every part of that era without ever really being directly connected to it or any of those sounds. rather, i'd say it brought over the sound from the club of its own volition without watching others do it or knowing there was a trend of Brits taking influence from hip hop and the dance floor. it's like showing up in a costume you made yourself for Halloween and then finding out that everyone else is dressed in the same costume as you that they bought from Spirit Halloween. you know you're better than them, but who's gonna notice? still, even if it feels accidentally of its time, its still bursting with as much energy as your baggy and grebo bands, hitting you with high energy track after track. i do think "Kisses on the Wind" and its Latin influence kinda falls flat, and the orchestra hits on "Outré risqué locomotive" get a bit obnoxious, but most of the tracks are alright. "Buffalo Stance" is the clear standout, though, and i'd say it's worth the price of admission. the whole album's a fun little mash of sunny post-Madonnasplosion pop and socially conscious rap. is the rapping great? not exactly, but for 1989 it could be worse. you take what you can get.
It was something back in the day... Nowadays, I kind felt that it didn't aged well, you know? I mean, songs like "Buffalo Stance" and "Manchild" are great, but the rest I felt like meh :-( Giving it a 3 because it brought happy memories, nevertheless ;-)
Very enjoyable dance/pop album, haven't heard of this artist before. Good surprise and the debut album has strong contenders for future listens.
Overall it's a fun an energetic album. I've never been too into this type of 80s sound but there's enough variety to keep it enjoyable. The first track is definitely the standout hit and shines above everything else in terms of catchiness. While there are a couple songs that had grating hooks they're balanced out by the fun, driving instrumentals. Aside from the main hit single, The Next Generation stood out to me as an awesome moment for social commentary paired with a very listenable song. The bonus tracks are neat and the Buffalo Stance remix offers a fun moment with new introductory vocals and a cool beat switch up. All in all this is a solid, fun album. It isn't anything I'm eager to listen to in entirety anytime soon but offers 2 or 3 songs that I could put in rotation. The rap lyricism isn't particularly groundbreaking but is carried by a consistently bold vocal performance.
Sassy Swede sings (and raps) about sex, suckas, and similar topics.
Very late 80's - early 90's hip hop. Fun and funky
3.5!
Trailblazing to be sure. An hour of bronze age hip-hop is a bit much
Hah hah, this is painfully dated and the hip-hop flows are truly primitive, but it has an infectious kind of energy to it, and I did actually have some fun at points. I mostly know Neneh Cherry from an awesome collab she did with a Norwegian jazz group The Thing 20 years after this - y'all should check out "The Cherry Thing" - they do a cover of Suicide's "Dream Baby Dream" that's 😘👌 Fave tracks - I liked "Inna City Mamma" - top pick has to be "Outré Risqué Locomotive" though - it sounds like something Finn and Jake would sing on "Adventure Time" 😆
buffalo stance- 6 manchild- 4 kisses on the wind- 5 inna city mamma- 4 the next generation- 5 love ghetto- 4 heart- 7. its kind of giving phineas an ferb.... phoney ladies- 5
Might be the worst album name (sounds like something Graeme high hip hop icon WAK47 would drop) but the music itself was perfectly listenable scratchy beats
"Buffalo Stance" and then some songs that sound exactly the same but not quite as good
Nice and dancey. Also, did I just heard a song that sampled a part of "Amen, Brother" who WASN'T the Amen Break for the first time?
Some fun grooves! And loved that opening track.
Good album Not out of this world, but certainly good 3
Ein altbekanntes Album mit teils guten teils zu souligen Lieder.
weirdly sterile. just okay. sounds like wholesome angry girl pop
It’s decent but a bit samey
Love a lot of the 80s Dance pop feels, its like if Paula Abdul tried to tap. It feels like she sings nonsense and I think I love that the most. "I'm in a home run, on the last stretch" "I'm in a home run, on the left foot with the right foot" what the hell does that mean? I don't care, it's such a jam. I didn't really care for the rap other than a song or two. Felt very "rippity rippty rap", kind of cool she was bringing rap into something the feels very poppy. Some of the shit is so goofy it just doesn't feel like it fits. It's a little long, but I'd be a liar if I didn't say I had that Buffalo Stance hook in my head the last few days.
Classic hiphop album clearly. Let's see how it goes. It's a decent listen. She was ahead of her time. I like the remixes 20 years later even more on her album VERSIONS that I listened to after this: https://open.spotify.com/album/2J0cL2vNheuVAuVJ5XPQRQ?si=M_hbrbagSt2hVByZ9iv13A
Buffalo Stance is a song I continue to jam to this day. I also often quote it to people “Huh? SSssuuuckah!” That being said, I have never listened to this album. It is very much of its time. While it would have been a bit forward leaning when released, it is still very 80’s. Despite that I enjoy her voice, the rhythm, and the vibe. Overall, an enjoyable album.
This has that very distinctive 90's pop sound (New Jack Swing?) but some of the songs I actually kind of like. Probably not something I'd put on again, but wouldn't be mad at it either if it came on. 2.5/5
groovy, funky, and energetic album, good one
Funky.
I had completely forgotten Neneh Cherry existed until this popped up. The album is fine, nothing great but nothing annoying. Also nothing essential, but always good to see women of color represented. I appreciated her lyrics providing something different at least.
So unbelievably 80s. This very long album had its moments, but overall there was no hook for me.
Well, certainly the source material for the 80s revival pop trend from a few years ago! I didn't mind it although not quite my cup of tea
This is #day154 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... the name rings a bell for me because of Massive Attack, particularly their debut Blue Lines. If memory serves me right, Neneh was pushing the boys hard to get into the studio, and they spent a lot of time recording at her house. There's even a fun story about her baby’s nappy and why Blue Lines supposedly smells of shit. On top of that, Neneh made additional arrangements for the last track, “Hymn of the Big Wheel”. As for Raw Like Sushi, I’m into the way it blends hip-hop, funk, and pop. It’s got that very late '80s vibe. You can even hear hints of what would eventually shape the trip-hop sound on Blue Lines, which is no surprise, since Robert Del Naja helped craft the third track on this album, “Manchild”. There’s definitely a sense of collaboration and community here, which is fun. I’m giving it a 3 out of 5, though. It's got some great moments, but not quite enough to make me want to revisit it in the future. Looking forward to #day155.
I've never heard this album. I remember Neneh Cherry from the late 80s, specifically Buffalo Stance. Hearing that song now makes me wonder why it became particularly popular. It certainly doesn't resonate or seem at all special. The rest of the album is the same. Not horrible but not at all memorable. This album shouldn't be on this list. Soft 3 stars.
There were some interesting songs, but this will most likely be one that I never think about again
Feels very much like the imperative for voguing.
There's a real nashup of genres on here with Ms. Cherry rapping abd singing - not my style, not ny preferred sound, but I rather liked it.
Is it pop? Is it rap? Who knows but it's 100% 80s
Meh
Its hard to describe. It was old school flow and beats with some grown topics but it felt like disney channel (specifically phineas and ferb) Definitely songs u sing with the lads
I remember this when it came out. There sew some decent ones on this.
Decent enough of a listen.
Solid 80s pop--back when people could dance for real. Shades of Sinead O'Conner's Lion & Cobra.
Had a lot of fun with this! Some really good pop rap with strong and layered production. Really interested to hear her later albums that are produced by Four Tet (!!)
Thought this was super fun and I liked the remixes of the songs too
i do not know this individual but it seems like she has been involved in some really impressive musical projects!! and she's don cherry's step-daughter ! woah! this album seems like a real departure for her cuz she seemed really involved in the post-punk scene ? anyways it was fun but like mostly silly i thought
Still like Manchild the best - no wonder, it's co-written by Robert del Naja. But there is some filler too and it does sound a bit dated. However it's still an interesting combination of rap and other genres (mostly pop).
Good album, never listened to the whole album before
I’ll be honest I totally fell asleep listening to this album. I’m it because it was bad at all, I was just tired. I actually really liked it. I don’t remember any of the song names but I remember the production being top notch and the record sounded great. Def putting it in my library.
All over the place stylistically, in a good way. Will give it some more spins
Solid but feels dated at this point
Some great tracks.
Enjoyed this album more than expected. '89 UK hip hop brought global
The most 1989 thing that has ever happened. More than the Berlin Wall coming down. It’s amazing.
Album was okay. Nothing bad, but nothing really stood out either. Did appreciate the social issues brought up in the music. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
I dunno what to make of Raw Like Sushi, it's good in places, rubbish in places, often comes across a bit like she wants to jump on the bandwagon of others before her (like Janet Jackson) and it's VERY 80s at times, but it's not without its charm. The opening track is a certifiable banger, her delivery is authentic and emphatic, it's got a bit of everything which means it hits and misses, often throughout the same song. Probably fun enough to get a 3, it has personality and then some.
Very dated, but in a fun and endearing way - like finding photos of your parents dressed up and out in their younger days. Album definitely gets weaker as you go through it, but there's enough fun there to merit a 3.
It's fine
A classic but not one I would return to.
For the time, this album was super innovative, showing a woman’s perspective in the rap game.
Not bad
Liked this, it was good, I thought
Not exceptional
The buffalo stance track is the highligh, but there are some interesting and catchy tracks here and there but nothing reaches Buffalo stance. And the remix is great too.
RLS shows its age…quite gracefully! Pre Massive Attack, it’s easy to forget that the UK rap scene’s reference point was the South Bronx. (Worth pointing out that Ms Cherry part bankrolled Blue Lines). Anyway. The good bits of this album (Manchild especially) are exceptional. The less good bits stand up quite well too.
First two tracks are great - then it kinda fades. Def not bad though
Good album! Not a repeat for me but it wasn't terrible. 3.4 stars
This was a fun late 80's hip hop-ish album. Best lyrics: You took my man and didn't mean it But you did it to hurt my feelings What I should do is slap you in your face You left me here with a pain below my waste You lose a guy, you move into the larder You got no style, why don't you try a little harder Chocolates, bananas, dough nuts and salami Ain't gonna fit 'coz you're full of boloney
It's pretty fun, but most of it just sounds like its coming out of a low spec digital radio in a hairdresser's.
Blast from the past, wasn't much of a fan at the time but manchild is a forgotten gem. Rest of the album is fun, but not something I'd choose to put on.
So much fun!
Hip pop. Very of its time, not particularly a bad thing. Buffalo Stance iss head n shoulders above the rest.
I loved parts of this. The super frenetic ultra 80s synth production on tracks like Buffalo Stance were really fun, the unusual chord progressions on Manchild reminded me of Mitski (the highest compliment I can give). Other parts were forgettable, but had some real high points for me. Fun time capsule.
Overall pretty good album. It sometimes sounds a bit dated, like pretty much all rap albums from the 80s do. But more often it sounds remarkably fresh considering the time period, especially compared to its contemporaries. Favorites: Love Ghetto
Nice pop music
Buffalo stance was very cool, but the rest of the album was quite same-y
This was a surprisingly pleasant time capsule. Shades of Micheal Jackson, early scratching and hip hop. Im not sexy enough for the lyrics but it went past with some pleasure and it was consistent as some of these albums are 2 singles and then a wasteland.
Sure, it's dated as all hell, but this was an enjoyably catchy and eclectic listen.
Cool late 80's R&B/pop sound. Listened to it twice. Liked Manchild and Buffalo Stance.
Sigo odiando el sistema de 5 estrellas (pero weno, decente pa escucharte un par de canciones sueltas, pesadillo si te escuchas hora y cuarto de disco)
A fun yet dated record. The ‘record scratch’ effect, synonymous with 80s Hip Hop, will forever make me feel unwell.
Meh, it's was okay
Not for me
Smooth sound and a nice voice. Nothing overly memorable, though.
Another solid 3.5. Buffalo Stance is an opening banger.
For rap I really liked it. Not my usual but fun and engaging!
This was okay. I don't understand its place on 1001 Albums though. Perhaps it was the fusion of hip hope and pop?
3-
A couple of really great tracks make this a 3 instead of a 2
Have on vinyl. Outside of a couple of strong singles, I don't understand how this is one of the albums you must hear before your die. There were better songs in the chart then and now
She's Sweedish? Really? A pretty darn good modern R&B album , just not really a genre that I much appreciate. Still its not like I didn't like any of the songs, well except maybe Buffalo Stance which apparently is the hit, but I never heard it before today. A lot of songs that I liked - is this who sings on Massive Attacks Unfinished Symphony and possibly Safe From Harm? Manchild reminds me of Unfinished symphony. (looked it up and the answer is no. She sings on the gorgeous Hymn of the Big Wheel - so props!) 3 stars
Know the name but that was about it. Listened and it’s ok.
This album is super confident for a solo debut. I thought it was a pretty cool mix of styles that holds up pretty well compared to a lot of stuff from this era.
Sure thought I was going to hate this at the start of the first song, Buffalo Stance, but I ended up liking that tune. Not my kind of music, but it surpassed my very low expectations—and for that it gets a 3.
Interesting. Enjoyed it more than expected. 3.5
Very cool Hip Hop type album and she is Swedish! Does that mean this is a UK album? I'm not sure where it was produced but this was a fun one. Reminded me of a lot of the early 90's hip hop pop similar to this. But I enjoyed the lead Buffalo Stance, The Next Generation, Outre Risque Locomotive.
Putting the "eh" in Neneh, eh? Look, I understand what she's going for here, it's that hip, cutting-edge hip hop-adjacent sound that would come to define a good chunk of pop music for the five years or so - maybe she was slightly ahead of the curve? But it's a style that doesn't have a tremendous amount of depth, and the lyrics on a lot of this hit me as goofy, almost cringe-worthy from time to time. Of course, there are a few good songs, I'm saving three. But it's just not a style that appeals to me that much, and it's pretty dated. Not necessarily her fault, but the whole thing makes me think of the recent Olympics breakdancer from Australia, some woman with a PHD in "cultural movement" or whatever the hell putting on a show for spectators to give them a glimpse of "cool." I don't know anything about Neneh or her background, but I feel like this music gives audiences the same sort of superficial glimpse at "cool" culture. I don't really find it to be that cool, sorry. But it's a decent listen. Favorite tracks: Manchild, Kisses on the Wind, So Here I Come. Album art: Just a portrait shot of Neneh, looking cool and tough. Very, very '90s. Perfectly fitting for the music. 3/5
First song, "Buffalo Stance", is kind of a banger. The rest, not so much. Interesting time capsule, though.
It is very 1989. And not in a good way.
3/5
Pretty good lyrically, pretty forgettable musically
A good 90s album. You can hear what comes after it
I quite enjoyed this. It has that late 80s/early 90s dance/R&B vibe that is very nostalgic to me. “Buffalo Stance” is a fantastic song, and there are a lot of other good ones on the album too. Wish I could give this a 3.5, but I’m rounding down as it’s not quite a 4 for me, but I still enjoyed it.
Fun little hip-pop album.
Meh. Not really my thing.
first listen it's got soul but like a lot of 80s releases, not enough production
Buffalo Stance is a great song but otherwise this album did not hugely pique our interest. Decent enough.
Kinda fun.
That was very fun and an immediate throwback to the era. It is also very cringe and is it good? Hard to discern between fun and amusing lyrics and good music.
It's very 1980s, a meld of all the influences. But kinda boring to me, like most rap. At least it has some interesting music with it. Something about it is compelling. 3 stars for being somewhat compelling and not terrible.
Better than most 80s and early 90s hip hop but that's a pretty low bar. On the whole, pretty forgettable except for the lead off track which I'll throw on at parties occasionally. Not really worth the rest of the album.
A lot of different flavors of 80s pop are here; it sounds like an end of a decade. I enjoyed my listen more than I expected, but I don't plan on revisiting. I respect the personality and craft on display here. Highlights: Buffalo Stance, Inna City Mamma, Love Ghetto, Phoney Ladies
Few bangers
With the still cool, still classic album opener like Buffalo Stance, Raw Like Sushi has a tall task ahead of itself following it with equally incredible songs. While it falls short of the mark due to the datedness of some of the songs, the results are indeed interesting, in particular deep cuts like Outré Risqué Locomotive, Love Ghetto and the remixes of Buffalo Stance and Manchild. Overall, a solid representation of what pop music was heading into at the turn of the decade. Favorites: Buffalo Stance, Manchild, Kisses on the Wind, Inna City Mamma, Love Ghetto, Outré Risqué Locomotive.
Fun
Perfectly fine
3.75
Not sure why this is on the list. It’s pretty mediocre.
Not great.
Solid...kind of fun album. Not one I had a lot of exposure to in the past. 3.5/5
2.5
There are some songs I feel she has better vocal skill/range than others. I do appreciate her enthusiasm, it definitely carries some of her work. The sound of the album is fun, and really enjoys the 80’s atmosphere it was produced in, but I just can’t give it a higher score than a low 3 at highest compared to other music out there from similar genres and time periods. I do like Inna City Mamma 👍 and the album feels like it improves as it goes. Buffalo Stance is a decently fun opening, but not my favorite on here.
Never listened to this whole album. Pretty fun actually.
I had previously only heard 1 song off this album but I was surprised at how serious the tone actually was. The music sounds like 90s pop/r&b but the lyrics cover a wide range of serious topics
Good 1st half. Some great singles. Became a bit samey after. Great sounds, production and memories.
3/5
It was pretty funny. Generally a catchy production as well. Lyrically seemed to dwell heavily in "stay away from my man" territory. Also every song felt a tad on the long and repetitive side. But the sound was different enough from song to song to keep the album fresh.
Somehow this led to me listening to Paula Abdul, and that Straight Up song, which is the best.
cool late 80s album.
80s hip hop pop. Well done but not really my thing
This being the first hip-hop record on my list, and with an artist I had never heard before, this was a fun experience. The album started off hot with "Buffalo Stance", a very of-the-time (in a good way) 80s rap banger. Followed soon after by the more sentimental "Kisses On The Wind", Neneh shows some diversity here. However, not much more was notable to me on this album, especially in the middle of the 11-track record. There are a couple more strong songs to close out the tracklist in "Outre Risque Locomotive" and "My Bitch", which saved this album from being completely front-loaded for me. Overall though, a pretty fun listen, and "Buffalo Stance" remains an underrated gem. 5/10
Cool
Neneh Cherry’s Raw Like Sushi feels exhilarating. It gives the vibes of dance-pop, but there is obvious Hip-Hop elements littered through her delivery and flow. For me, it comes down to stylistic preference. On some tracks, I like how she sounds and the instrumentals used to complement her voice (Kisses on the Wind, Inna City Mamma). However, often times I felt the songs off-beat and not enjoyable. I can respect the album though. All in all, Raw Like Sushi is an alright album. Best Song: Kisses on the Wind Worst Song: Heart
meh, 80s slop
I didn't like it much but it wasn't that bad either
It’s fun, but also repetitive. Fun and dated. Maybe a perfect album just given how it’s a time capsule for a vibe
Kitschy late 80s pop. Shades of Madonna and Prince with Hip Hop sprinkled throughout. I surprisingly didn’t hate it.
Buffalo Stance was good. I was really into this for the first few tracks but I felt it kind of started to drag towards the end.
Very 80s sounding. Synth pop, but not my style.
The cover art is a snapshot of a very specific phase we all went through. The music is similarly frozen in time. Buffalo Stance has undeniable charm and Neneh herself is brimming with charisma, but the rest of the album, oof. It isn't dreadful but I absolutely did not have to hear it.
Good listen!
Would be good to dance to but sounds very average.
Definitely sounds like 1989
Really good, little dated production but hey
it’s alright some decent tracks some absolutely unlistenable parts 3/5
Honestly a pretty pleasant surprise of an 80s album
I almost like Buffalo Stance, Outre Risqué Locomotive, So Here I Come
Fun. Cool. In your face. 3.5.
Some heat on here
dos primeras canciones estupendas, el resto recuerda demadiado a Madonna. Hará mejores albumes.
Total 80’s vibe. Overall ok.
3.4 stars rounded down. “Buffalo Stance” and “Kisses on the Wind” are the stand out tracks.
Ganz geil eigentlich, Drumcomputer Hip Hop, bisschen viel Gesang. Ordentliche 80er Vibes.
I liked some parts a lot, but then some other parts became too noisy for me.
Never heard of this record. It's pretty solid - always fun to hear a well produced album in a popular genre that you've never heard. FEels ahead of it's time for 1989!
This album reminds me of a cross between, Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul, and TLC. Which isn't a recipe that I'm after. That being said, the first song was a total banger. I listened to that song a few times. The rest of the album was ok. I'm sure fans of this genre were pleased with this record. There's some music ideas that feel dated. When she is rapping, her flow is pretty great. It honestly is a lot better than mainstream female rappers currently. So, I applaud that. Shocked that I didn't hate this and just as shocked that I enjoyed the listen.
Highs and lows, but mostly rides the middle. She deserved a better album.
Only had ever heard Buffalo Stance before, pretty fresh old School Hip Hop.
Great but a Bit too avant-garde for me
She's pretty cool. Surprised I never heard any of this...
Never heard of her before but I thought this was really solid pop music.
pretty decent
I enjoyed it, but wasn't blown away. A shame, because I really liked her released singles.
Decent throwback to late 80s hip hop.
Wouldn’t you know it, this album is my lowest ranked album yet! Just like Lust For Life, it hits when it hits. This time, it barely hits. This is my first album with no 10s so far, but Neneh Cherry is truly someone who pioneered hip-hop in the 80s. From the smashing club hit “Buffalo Stance” to songs like “Heart” and “So Here I Come”, she truly has her moments. On songs like “Love Ghetto” and “The Next Generation”, her message tries but fails to reach me through all of the sensual lyrics. The only sense I feel with them is panic and cringe. The album is good otherwise and I give it a 75/100 or 3.75/5.
This one was new to me. I enjoyed familiarizing myself with Neneh’s work and found it pretty cool that her father was a jazz musician and that her brother is Eagle-Eye. I cover “Save Tonight” often, but doubt I’ll be covering any Neneh anytime soon. Mad props to her though!
a vibe of Micheal Jackson's age
Just 3 days ago, I was complaining that over 10% of my “assignments” here were Electronica, and how it is my second worst rated genre. I didn’t note then that the only genre ranked below Electronic is Hip Hop. So here we go, an album tagged both Electronica and Hip Hop. Groan. But also tagged Pop. Well let’s give it a shot…. I like this a lot more than some of the other Electronica or hip hop albums I’ve been served here. There’s songs that remind me of Madonna, and of the Spice Girls…. Maybe Paula Abdul. These are actual songs, with melody and such. Certainly dance music, but retaining the basic concepts of being music. Overall, it’s ok, better than any of the other Electronica albums I’ve listened to. It gets a little repetitive, especially when the bonus tracks roll along. But really decent overall. 3/5
A decent album in that it was better than I expected and listened (though not intensely) until the end. I'm not much to listen to club-style dance music, so it's not my kind of music, so I listened and moved on. Still, I rather listen to this than anything by Madonna and most things from Prince.
This was hugely popular during my last high school years. Other than what made it to mtv I am completely unfamiliar. 3/5
This album was not my cup of tea but it was alright.
The album was decent and listenable, but I was more fascinated that 1) members of Massive Attack worked on this album 2) that Neneh Cherry lost the Best New Artist Grammy to Milli Vanilli, which was vacated but then not awarded to her, and 3) that she was a member of the Slits.
felt like an inconmplete mixture between like classical 80s pop and 90s hiphop
I liked Buffalo Stance. But can't say I liked the rest of the album.
Good energy. If I could give it a seven, or a 3.5, I'd do that, but if I have to pick between three stars and four stars, given my previous criteria, it's going to be three stars.
This album is like a masterclass of 80s pop music. Whether it sounds dated or classic if a matter of personal taste. 'Buffalo Stance' is the highlight here by a wide margin. Overall, it's a more daring and eclectic album than her contemporaries but it's very firmly rooted in the 80s.
Listening to this was so much fun
Excellent vocals and delivery with some very tight and creative sequencing, sampling, and blending of unique elements. Definitely a product of it's time but there are some really solid songs here and some which don't resonate so much with me. I feel like this album would take some time to sink in.
Buffalo Stance was pretty good! the rest, I could honestly do without, not bad by any means, but not great. However the themes throughout set her apart from her peers during this time.
Pretty good vibes. Buffalo Stance is a hit. A good example of the super conscious music that would go on to define certain genres in the 90s
Left feeling empowered. Bitches better stay away from my man. Jokes aside, fun album.
3.5/5 i'll have to relisten, it seemed interesting
This album was cool overall, kind of a time capsule of the type of pop music that was en vogue when I was first starting to become aware of popular music. It's also a nice harbinger of how house music would increasingly become a part of pop music. However, I'm not really sure how significant this album is overall. It's pleasant enough to listen to, though 3/4
In the right mood the new Jack swing thing works for me. Never will be more than sort of a fun diversion in my musical listening world, but a nice diversion on occasion.
upbeat and catchy. not sure if it was her accent, but she actually reminded me of queen latifah.
Always loved Buffalo Stance. The rest ain’t bad, either.
Respect for late 80's. Buffalo Stance is great. The rest is OK. 3/5
Decent album, saved by the singing parts because the rap parts sounded amateurish and corny
A unique mix of hip hop, pop and r&b. This album really is a glorious time capsule of the time it came out. Every beat sounds like it’s from the 1980s…because it is. I really like a lot of this.
This was very of the time. It was compared to Prince and Madonna, but there's no way it reaches those levels. The single was pretty good though.
Different but good.
I came into this album knowing nothing about it besides seeing that on the Wikipedia article it was hip hop and new jack swing and while I liked it I feel like it may not have been the best inclusion for what it is trying to represent. It had very catchy melodies and choruses and I really liked most of the songs but I do feel as if it got carried by these choruses because the verses even for the era were so elementary and poorly written. If you were picking albums to represent female rappers from the late 80's-early 90's I feel as if there would be about 8-9 albums I would pick over this. I am pretty sure there was no inclusion of a MC Lyte, Monie Love or Salt-N-Pepa album on the list and would have also included "Black Reign" by Queen Latifah but that is because I have a strong personal bias towards Queen Latifah. Personally I believe that all of these artist have albums that better represent the genre from that time. I think this album is sort of was included just to cover the female rapper and new jack swing requirements because this list has a surprising lack of both of these categories. There seems to me to be an over abundance of albums from a plethora of rock subgenres but a massive lack in albums from these two categories. You pick like 30 new wave albums and 80 post-punk albums but can't include more than 5 albums from female rappers and more than 1 new jack swing. I am not even opposed to the new wave and post-punk picks and I like a lot of the choices but I think there needs to be some sort of balance in the list. Personally I would have included at least one album from the 3 female rappers I included earlier and would have probably added a couple from new jack swing artists like New Edition, Jodeci and Guy. This came a long way from just me reviewing this Neneh Cherry album and I say all that I have said to say I am not even opposed to this albums inclusion cause it was still very good like a 7.5-8/10 but its inclusion feels analogous to a diversity hire. It is here just to cover all the bases not to show your appreciation of its original genre or what it represents as an early breakthrough for female rappers.
Buffalo Stance is good, as is Kisses, but the rest doesn't really strike me
Wow, how very 90s. I'd say this was a very mid album for me.
Interesting level of cross cultural hip hop, considering the British origin. Really enjoyed the production.
Not bad. A little long for what it is. Wouldn't put it on myself, wouldn't turn it off if it came on. Buffalo Stance does kinda slap.
Cool
Great first song. Rest is not for me!
This was weird. Wouldn't really call it boring like a two star, so I guess it's a 2.5, which sadly rounds to a 3. Some of the lyrics were weird, either because of how dated it sounds or just how blunt they are. There were many times a lyric caught my attention, but it was never a good thing. Music itself wasn't too bad, but not very memorable. My favourite song was Buffalo Stance.
- introducing the instruments to start the album was badass - enjoyable
Very late 80s hip hop, not a bad thing. A lot of clever lyrics, the music serviceable but mostly contained to that scratch and beat of its era. Good stuff from an artist I hadn't hear before.
This was enjoyable. As long as she doesn’t get into a rap battle with Eminem she’ll be fine. I loved how she had a positive message to go with good beats. Very well done and I had no idea this came out in the 80’s.
When I was 15 years old, this was the bomb. And it is still ok, but has not aged all that well. The late 1980s production (very loud drums in the mix) is annoying and apart from the well known bangers, it also contains a lot of filler material.
Great hooks and lyrics on a few of the songs, but the production makes it sound like a Nokia ringtone.
It’s… like, almost good.
Buffalo Stance was great. Rest of the album was 80s rap. Didn’t age well.
Well presented. Strong statement hip-hop. Videos led me to think she had a huge ego at that time. Nothing but her in focus
This album definitely influenced a lot of 90's pop/hip hop. There's some cool beats in this album, but overall not really my cuppa tea. I appreciate getting different genres than rock though. I'd probably give this one a 2.5 if I could.
Ahhh I remember this. Very talented lady and Mabel's mum too. Her Wiki page is an exercise in talent name-dropping but sadly most of these tracks now sound very 80s which is a big no-no in today's climate. Still, there are enough high points remaining to warrant it's place in the 1001.
Better than most 80s hip hop/pop music
Acceptable.
Starts off extremely strong. Last song is also really good as well. Enjoyed the diversity of the album. Some misses here and there.
Buffalo Stance certainly stands above the rest of the album, but it is engaging in that it is a good mix of both melody and rap.
Best Song: Inna City Mamma. Nice synthy little singalong. Worst Song: My Bitch. Seems like a really odd choice to have a man come in at the end of this solo female album to call the artist a bitch. And the song sucks. Overall: Very dated, for better or for worse. I enjoyed it enough while listening to it, but I doubt I'll ever have reason to return (let alone remember having listened to it to begin with).
This album was fun, very solid 90s (1989 I know...) hip hop vibes. Buffalo Stance is a classic with such a solid hook. Good times.
Starts exceptionally strongly. Fades a bit. Still pretty cool.
"Hello, could I please have fourteen serves of 1989?" "Certainly sir, take this Neneh Cherry album !"
While this really isn't my thing and I feel like it hasn't aged particularly well, I am happy to concede that Neneh Cherry was onto something really different with this album. The incorporation of various styles of music was really forward thinking for its time. Cherry also tackles subject matter that isn't common in late 80s pop music. Several strong songs and quite a bit of filler. Fave Songs: Buffalo Stance, Phoney Ladies, Love Ghetto, Outré Risqué Locomotive
Did you know that Neneh Cherry and Eagle-eye Cherry are siblings?
It opens with its best two songs, which is always a worry. After this it has great lyrical content and okayish production - I feel like a few more years development of these music production techniques it'd be a lot more engaging. She is a compelling figure without the music to back it up here (it also ends in the most Brummie fashion ever - I am THERE for that.)
This album is kind of frustrating to listen to. I really like the choruses of most of the songs, but it’s all really dated.
I don't know this album but I've heard a bunch of Neneh Cherry singles over the years. Bog 90s rnb? Ok, way more 80s than the other stuff I've heard. Has that Prince flavour, jazzy pop with bits of other genres thrown in. First song was great, rest was average. 3/5.
Pros: some of these choruses are sublime, some neat sound collage stuff going on, lesser-spotted theme of motherhood ('The Next Generation') present which is interesting. Cherry's lively, exuberant personality shines through. Cons: Almost any time the hip-hop influences step to the fore. Cherry is an atrocious rapper. Songs like 'Buffalo Stance' and 'Heart' are cracking pop almost ruined by this ineptitude. It's also a big contributing factor to Raw Like Sushi sounding a bit dated. I think this just about shakes out as a three star offering.
A time capsule of the late '80s. Buffalo Stance really shines with some inventive production and momentum. 3/5
Today's album is a pop/hip hop record out of Sweden. Before today I'd never heard of Neneh Cherry. After a bit of research, I learned that this was her debut solo album. She sounds like Salt-N-Pepa mixed with Madonna. This album is as late 80's as it can get with the heavy synth sounds and the hip hop grooves. Overall, a perfectly average album. Not something I would actively seek out, but not something I was rushing to shut off either. Favorite songs: Buffalo Stance, Outre Risque Locomotive, Inna City Mamma, Heart, The Next Generation, Manchild, My Bitch Least favorite songs: Kisses on the Wind 3/5
Sounds like all of he 80. pop trends mashed together. Which is great and horrible both at once.
Sounds like Sonic the Hedgehog 3, in a good way
Great dance type album
Wel leuk, maar niks aparts
late eighties/early nineties r&b/hip hop, not quite new jack, but close. A lot of originality here. A lot of ground covered musically and thematically. Not an album I was overly familiar with, but one I very much enjoyed and want to spend time with in the future.
There is something groovin on this blend of hip hop that makes it OK. Not much veering off the formulae though.
Buffalo Stance is a great pop song and really captures the spirit of 1989, dated as it may sound now. Some of the others I like too but I’m not fond of her rapping/shouting style which sounds unnatural and contrived.
A high energy pop album with strong synths. I can hear a lot of Madonna and Janet Jackson. "Buffalo Stance" is the standout track, with nothing even coming close. There's some filler, but there are also a lot of decent bops. Favorites: Buffalo Stance, Kisses on the Wind, Inna City Mamma, My Bitch
Eh
Fun but a bit dated
Síðníundatugar synþa hiphop-popp. Hljómar eins og Prince ripoff eða homage í mínum eyrum. Ekki leiðinlegt, en ég þarf þetta ekki.
Buffalo stance is very very good but the rest of this was kind of ridiculous
странный альбом, но по описанию на вики я ещё другого ожидала
Odd, pretty dated, but very important. Part of a very successful musical family, none of whom were involved in this album. Fun, and often funny, but the first two songs stand out a mile. Not sure the remixes on the linked Spotify version add anything.
Listening to this album was like being slapped in the face by 1989. The elements of early hip-hop and rap with the underlying drum machine beats. Strong TLC, Salt-n-Pepa, and Janet Jackson vibes. The beginning of the intro track is a little odd, calling out instruments. Super dated. I will say that her rap is VERY good. Clean and excellent cadence. Probably won't listen to this again, but I can appreciate it.
this is an album that surprised me! it sounded fresh for 1989, even though it came in at the end of the eighties with lots of synthesizers. there was some good variety and even some dance songs were included, but it stayed easy and smooth enough. and there were some cute rhymes in here! before i knew it, i had listened to this album a few times over.
I had never heard of Neneh Cherry, and honestly, that's a shame! I feel like she could have existed among the best of 80s R&B and pop. I can't imagine a better year for this album to come out than 1989, because it sounds like a complete sound mashup of the entire 80s decade with tidbits from every 80s genre that you can imagine. It was eclectic in the best way possible. The lyrics on this album were very clever and fun, as well. Buffalo Stance is officially going in my "guilty pleasures" bucket, because despite the utter 80s cheesiness of it all, I couldn't stop enjoying it. Not every song was as much of a win for me, but I honestly didn't hear any songs that I didn't at least baseline enjoy. This album was a nice surprise, and definitely a hidden gem for anyone who loves the sounds of the 80s.
Seems a mix of classic 80’s sound and more influential 90s hip hop. Good catchy album worthy of the list, but slightly dated sound stops it getting more than a 3.
Very 80s, a little bit Janet Jackson/Paula Abdul, but not quite enough Salt n Pepa! Always liked Neneh’s voice. Hit singles are still great, but dated.
Fine
weak vocals
Bra med masse synth
Fun to hear this again. I would add a half star if I could.
A lot boxier than I remembered.
takie naciągane trochę
Enoyable, think some of the lyrics were written from the massive attack geezer. Sounded dated in parts and the song about kids made her sound a bit like a pro lifer. But good honest to god hiphop.
Hip hop. Pop
this album is catchy as hell!!!!!!! get funky, baby!!!! all things considered, this is an 80s pop record. it's got the familiar drum loops, that iconic 80s synth, and all the catchiness of its contemporaries. it's also got a little bit of rap in there?? unfortunately, pop-rap from this era is incredibly cheesy, and she's got that 'i went to the hat store today' flow a little bit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1bbBqnG_cg) neneh cherry's most familiar contemporary is madonna, and it's easy to see why the two would draw comparison, but i feel like this album has a little bit more to say than most of madonna's work. "inner city mama" has a whole hell of a lot to say, as does "the next generation." neneh cherry was pregnant while she was writing this album, and you can tell she was looking towards the future when she wrote these lyrics. i liked this one. i don't know if it's gonna go in my regular rotation or anything like that, but i'm glad i got to listen. not necessarily my cup of tea genre-wise, if i'm gonna go 80s i'm gonna get more alternative than this, but as a whole, really not bad.
It's funny because I love the 80s and 90s when it comes to fashion, aesthetic, cars, etc but I feel like those years have wildly differences in music and how well it ages. Some of the sounds from drum machines in this specific era just sound so CORNY now. I've never heard this album or artist before and the most compelling thing I noticed is that she's a chorus master, but the rest of the song just seems kind of blah. A good album, but nothing I want to listen to again
First song was amazing, rest of album was fine.
3.1 - New jack swing comes to Sweden? It's danceable with plenty of color and energy. I hear songs like "Buffalo Stance" play at the Whole Foods and the workers bopping along to the beat, so there's a nostalgic crowd-pleasing element to this type of music. But there are better examples of new jack swing (Janet Jackson's "Control" or even "Cooleyhighharmony" by Boys II Men). And Neneh Cherry's message and attitude are consistently corny and one-note.
This album is EXTREMELY 90s, maybe too much so at times. But definitely got some bangers in between the more generic ones. Vocals and lyrics were great, carried most of this project. Not much else to say, it’s good for what it is, and I really respect it for that. Will be adding those first couple tracks to my playlists, easily stronger vs the rest of it.
Eeeh
Good bearing how aggressively it is of it’s time
This is a pretty sweet, and a little spicy collection of dance tracks and hip hop beats. The style is very 80’s, but in a nice way. The lyrics are sung sweetly and rapped with clear diction and very little swearing compared to many other examples of rap I’ve heard. She represents troubles she’s had with men, and is quite frank about when she is and isn’t receptive to their advances. I had never heard these songs before, even though it seems she had a pretty big hit with Buffalo Stance. This was never my scene. Anyway it’s still an ok collection. There may even be one or two I would like to hear again.
I really liked the first track, Buffalo Stance; it’s a really cool blend of 80s hip hop and pop that I hadn’t heard before. However the rest of the album really didn’t stand out to me musically, however I did enjoy the political themes in the lyrics.
Madonna with teeth and a message. Lots of female positivity to address the misogynistic, male lyrics in so many rap and hiphop songs of the time. It's not a great album but it was fun to listen to. Reminded me that I have one of slightly later albums (that leans more to rock) that I haven't heard in years. Will listen to that one again.
I had no issue with this album, but like a lot of late 80's/early 90's albums I don't think it aged well sonically. I wouldn't listen to this again, but I can see how teens at the time found it to be a fun album.
Not bad
Very good hip hop
This is all well and good...but no idea why I need to hear this before I die.
I was not familiar with the artist or any of the songs. The album was pretty good. It had that early rap and hip hop feel while maintaining that 80s feel. At times the music reminded me of Michael Jackson and Prince. It wasn't a bad album. I doubt I revisit it or listen to any of the songs again.
rap sections: 5/5. sublime. dated 80s vocal sections: 2/5.
Yea yea for Nea Nar
That late 80s early 90s sound that sounded so good on a lo-if KMart speaker
Never heard of this artist. Sounds like a mash up of every other female 80's pop artist. I'm not sure why this is so important for me to hear, but it was fun.
As the outstanding "Buffalo Stance" plays, I was impressed. I was like, woahh no wonder rap replaced '80s pop! - hiphop goes well with synthy drums! And next tracks kept the flame, they're enjoyable too, albeit not as good as the opener. This album is basically a better version of Madonna. Definitely '80s, but tolerable. Then we got to "The Next Generation". I mean yeah, next generation, the future of the nation. It's a genuine message, but the way it was delivered sounded like it's a parody rap. Personally, not something one would take seriously. Then it's alllll downhill from there.
Average vibes
I'm not a huge fan of Buffalo Stance so, considering it was the lead single and the opening track, I was worried I wouldn't enjoy this but I actually liked the rest of the album a lot more! Buffalo Stance is pretty cluttered and has some really dated 80s drum machine and synth sounds that just don't work for me at all, but the other songs are far less hectic and feature some pretty great instrumental parts (most notably the jazzy solo on Inna City Mamma and the SNL-style sax riff on The Next Generation) and a good mix of solid rap verses and catchy sung hooks
It's alright, a bit unmemorable, but kind of enjoyable.
3.25
Another insanely average album. Didn't turn it off, but will never listen again.
This album sounds like average 90s Hip Hop that has not aged well. I was not the biggest fan of this, however, it was not terrible.
First 3 songs I really liked. Good beats, smooth rapping vocals, and not too cheesy. After that there were a couple I enjoyed but the rest were a bit meh. But those first three especially were really good so as a whole, the album is enjoyable.
