Surprisingly fun
This is not one I've heard of before but I have heard of a lot of the things she's associated with - Don Cherry, Eagle Eye Cherry, The Slits, Dread Broadcasting. She seems to have had quite an interesting life. The music is not exactly my thing but I don't hate it. It seems competently done albeit a little generic 80s. The whole album has great energy and the production is solid. I feel like the people who would rate this highly would have some kind of nostalgic attachment to it and that there are probably not a whole lot of people who have never heard of this who would rate it five stars. As for me, it was good enough for a Tuesday morning but I can't see ever returning to it again. 3/5
Starts well with two classics, then gets a bit samey and boring. Nostalgic though. And those two tracks ARE great. 3 stars.
Peaks early, but what a peak….
A forgotten artifact of the late 80s / early 90s era, but I swear Lonely Island copped some real tunes making fun of Neneh Cherry. A fascinating, if forgettable artifact of the time.
rounding up to 3 bc of Buffalo Stance. it’s a jam. the rest of the album is just so dated
And another album that makes me wonder: why this album? It’s a debut album and she made better ones. It’s not the first female rap album. She’s not the best rapper. The song writing is good but not that great. The production is good but not that great. So why this album?
Naispuolista Vanilla Iceilyy. Kevyttä, meni ihan hyvin ruoanlaitossa taustamusana.
Cherry presents a nice slate of pop R&B, with good rap skills and a strong singing voice. Bits remind me of Gloria Estefan, Paula Abdul, or Madonna, which are not bad artists to be compared to. There are a few weak spots; "The Next Generation" (with it's overly-earnest presentation of a serious topic sounding like a mid-'80s PSA) and "Heart" (with second-grade playground insults played as if they were serious) come to mind, but overall it's solid. Not my genre of choice, but well done.
6 - AVERAGE
3,3 Highlights: Manchild, Kisses On The Wind
One hit wonder
55/100. Innovation has an expiration date. Personality tends to last a little longer. Probably more interesting historically than it is musically for me. Neneh Cherry blends hip-hop, synth-pop, dance music, and R&B into a sound that was fairly distinctive at the time. The scratch heavy DJ work and bright 80s production immediately place the album in its era. There is no mistaking when this record was made. Rather than simplifying the world into easy answers, Cherry often embraces complexity. The songs touch on identity, social change, relationships and the challenges facing a new generation trying to navigate modern life. Recording and promoting the album while visibly pregnant challenged a lot of assumptions about how female pop stars were expected to look and behave. That confidence and independence fit well with the album's themes. Musically, I found the record a bit hit and miss. Some of the genre blending works well and there are moments where the energy and personality carry the songs forward. Other tracks feel very tied to their era. And then there's Man in Outré Risqué Locomotive. Unfortunately, once I noticed that sound in the background that resembles old McDonald's kitchen beeps, it was impossible to unhear. The track went from experimental synth-pop to sounding like someone was desperately trying to tell me my fries were ready.
funky
Was I humming the BUFFALO STANCE chorus all day? Yes! Was the rest of the album memorable? Not quite
Fun and vibey
Ok
This was a tough one. I really wasn’t sure what to make of this at first. So right off the back I love the instrumentals and overall style. It’s like super late 80s early 90s sounding. It’s just a lot of life in the instrumentation. The issue is that for a few songs, it’s just TOO MUCH. Like I always complaining when metal genres are just trying way too hard and then they end up sounding like a wall of indistinguishable sound. This is the pop version of that. There’s just so much going on at points I feel completely overwhelmed. Which sucks cause I really love the vibe of the album. The best tracks are “buffalo stance”, “inna city mamma”, “so here I come”, and “heart”. Those have slightly less going on are alittle more chill, but songs like “love ghetto” are just too much, like at one point there’s fake applause from an audience which is not only just boring noise, it’s also annoying cause they didn’t even earn that applause from a real crowd, it’s just more over produced problems. I honestly think I’d like a demo of this album more if the demo has less distracting nonsense.
Good amount of singing. It's quite catchy. The ending of the album was pretty funny.
Horribly dated, overly punchy, over-annunciated. Real Spanish doesn't sound like that and makes me wonder if someone handed her the translated bits of what she wanted to say or if she's just overpronouncing everything like she did through the rest of the album. The music sounds like New Coke tastes. My Rating: 3/5
There's some great songs on this album, particularly the album opener and 'Manchild'. The album suffers however, from a rather dated production style, and rather empty-feeling platitudes on some songs like 'The Next Generation'. Overall, though, its a strong 3.
vrouwelijke coole tiener in 1990 ging hier heel hard op
wow. nothing has ever sounded more 1989 than this.
Refreshing album stylistically compared to some on this list. Was all over the place and a bit too disjointed for my taste but was worth a listen.
Nenah Cherry is FOYNE tho. Very 1989. I kinda wished I liked it more. It's cool at first but kinda wanes a bit as the album continues. But hot shit for it's time.
Very 80's, almost to the point where I'd dislike it, but the new jack swing vibes are generally keeping it interesting for me. Some songs have vocals I'm not terribly enamored with though.
The first track is catchy, genuine banger. The rest was dated yes, but also enjoyed it more than expected.
At first I was under the impression that this was going to be some cheesy of-its-time date electro-inspired late-80s "I like to rap in a major way" rap, and to some extent that's all valid. The opening beats of the first track, Buffalo Stance, do little to dissuade that notion. And then, eventually, it wins you over: it's so unabashedly confident, led by an impressive vocal performance by Cherry. To a major extent Raw Like Sushi is a product of its time, even more so than most other albums on this list - these 808-saturated synth-heavy beats could only ever exist in this exact period of human history - but it does a pretty good job with the tools it's given. It's hard to keep your lips pursed when she's just out here, talking about boys or whatever. Fav tracks: Buffalo Stance, Heart, Phoney Ladies
FAVO: Kisses on the wind, My Bitch
Sounds like Salt N’ Pepa trying to make a Madonna album, or vice versa. Either way, I’m not mad.
Ok hip hop/pop, but it seemed thin.
It’s interesting listening to something that feels nostalgic to an era of music i fully missed. Also ive been watching a lot of RPDR lately so some of these songs felt like a 90s hip hop challenge (I assume that’s where she got the concept!)
I had fun but every song on this album is like 56 seconds too long (except for Buffalo Stance, I love Buffalo Stance)
I really enjoyed my time with this but unfortunately cannot see myself coming back for more. Except Buffalo Stance.
TIL that this is Eagle-Eye Cherry’s sister AND that his real name is actually Eagle-Eye. Paula Abdul vibes. Buffalo Stance slaps!
Not really for me. I expected to dislike it, but it was fine.
I like the mix of styles
A little shocked to see this pop up. It’s got some solid tracks, but sounds dated at times. Swings mostly, though.
Some pleasant songs
Spirited, smart and slightly dated.
kind of boring to be honest.
Of its time. She’s got a great voice.
innovative album
I could see where this is grandbreaking.
gigolo sucker
She was really good here. I liked this one a lot
This hasn't aged fabulously, it's still a fun listen but it's very much of its time. The singles hold up pretty well, and were always something I really enjoyed. Neneh Cherry was such a badass role model for young girls back then, she probably gains a mark from me for that and the nostalgia this album gives me.
Neneh Cherry – Raw Like Sushi (1989) Day 144 was a decent listen. It’s a fair attempt from the late 80s to revolutionize the pop sound by blending in hip-hop and R&B elements. While I wouldn't go as far as calling it a classic, its upbeat energy and rawness made it an enjoyable experience. It felt more "focused" than previous attempts at genre-bending. A solid 3/5.
A couple good songs here but lyrically this album is definitely NOT good. There are some cool beats though they are sometimes repetitive
Tämähän oli vaihteeksi ihan raikasta hip hoppia
Holy 1989. This album is the perfect amalgamation of all '80's pop music. Every defining characteristic is refined to its best. And the result is just so catastrophically mid.
Lotta fun.
quite fun. sort of peters out the more it just stays in its zone but it's a zone i enjoy well enough
An enjoyable late '80s hip hop album, but not something I'd see myself going back to.
Objektivno dva najzabavnija singla ikad, praćena nejednako kvalitetnim ostatkom albuma nažalost.
Some good here and some bad. Some of it still sounds nice and quite a bit of it sound dated, unfocused and pretty stretched out. The first track is a great hit and I do like some of the other songs here. But it's not a very consistently good album, it kind of shows the best and worst aspects of this era of Hip Hop.
Just alright, I'm not a 80's hiphop fan. I recognized the Buffalo Stance song before. I'll go with 3 here
Nothing special here. I do like classic 80s hip-hop, though, so it had a certain nostalgic charm for me. 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3
One banger followed by an hour of meh.
Listening session: april 25th, while going grocery shopping and while eating dinner Listened to before: heard one song before Thoughts: I like to hear a late 80s album from a female solo artist on here. While I like the typical 80s production and while I agree that Neneh Cherry mixes rap and pop well, this didn’t hit me as much as I hoped Favourite tracks: Buffalo Stance & Manchild
I wasn't too sure about this album tbh. On first listen I really wasn't that into it, I couldn't really get me teeth in it and some of the lyrics felt really phoney, especially on 'Heart'. I decided to really try tuning in on 2nd listen through, and I don't know what changed but something clicked a bit. I felt a lot more of the style and the attitude from Neneh, and that really improved my listening experience. I think the 1st half of the album is weaker than the 2nd half. The 2nd half really hits hard, and the more experimental style feels very ahead of its time, hard to believe it's not a 90s album. I have to say I'm more of an outlier about the hit off this, 'Buffalo Stance' just didn't do it for me. I really want to rate this higher, but that 1st half I just can't connect with fully. It's certainly not bad by any stretch, but even with multiple listens I can't say I'd actively listen to it again. The 2nd half is really good though, really had a great beat and sense of self. Fav Track: Outré Risqué Locomotive
I don't have much to say about this one. Fun pop, I guess. I have no idea why this is one the list.
Probably more of a 3.5
"Buffalo Stance" was a surprisingly enjoyable first track - it reminded me a bit of some New Order. Overall, enjoyed the exposure but its not really for me.
Buffalo Stance and Inna City Mamma have some real fun beats. Lyrics make me a little sad cause not much has changed in the 30+ years since some of the calls to action in The Next Generation.
it was fun at the beginning but not my cup of tea
Two best-known 80s- banger ("Buffalo Stance", "Manchild") plus a decent rest. 2,5
Enjoyable, fun, a couple of songs I recognised from jingles. Memorable? Not particularly.
3.95
My rating 2.5
For me this is one of the better albums of this genre (that I don't like much), that I have heard here so far. 3 stars or C+.
Good album
I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Neneh has a great flow and the beats are catchy!
A very typical late 80s hip hop / pop sound.
I like the old school hip hop sound a lot and so the beats carried this for me. Not a lot captured my attention otherwise.
There's some charm in how completely of its time it sounds and some of the tracks are kinda fun to hear once or twice but a lot of this is really forgettable and the lyrics are often pretty bad
Goed vermaakt
A couple of bangers at the start and at the time was very different. It hasn’t aged as well as a fine wine but still a good listen
In a confession that will surprise some, I bought this album when it came out and used it to audition a new music system. A decision met with some disdain by the guy running the hi-fi shop. He had a point. It's hard to sound like you're from New York when you're Swedish and recording in Kensal Green (Neneh, not hi-fi guy. He was from Beckenham). Still, she had a bloody good go. 3*
Good
3 out of 5. I did enjoy how late 80's this felt, no shame.
Some fun eighties rap. Not much else to say about it really
First track was bomb, the rest were pop/hip hop expected of the times, but nothing groundbreaking from my POV.
There would be no J-Lo or Christina Aguilera without Nehneh Cherry. Props to her as a trailblazer. But the rhymes and rhythms here are a little too simple to listen to alot. Definitely influential though. A 3.
Starting off with Buffalo Stance! This started off as something I wasn’t really into, but it slowly got better and by the end I was enjoying it! Manchild! The better of the two songs I know with this name. Jokes aside, I enjoyed this one quite a bit. I like the way she goes back and forth between singing and rapping. Usually I don’t love female rappers, just a personal preference, but she’s pretty cool. Kisses on the Wind was pretty good. It was really fun. Inna city mama had good vibes to it! The next generation had a very good beat to it. It also had some great lyrics. Love ghetto had some good moments to it, but it blended into the previous tracks for me. Heart had some lyrics that made me laugh, but overall it was just alright. I didn’t have many thoughts about Phoney Ladies. It was what it was but nothing more. …Locomotive was fun enough. I loved So Here I come. Still not my genre, but this one was great. It almost sounded like the fresh prince theme. My Bitch was an alright closer I loved this album at the start, but it then felt so repetitive and fell short for me. I tried, I really did, but pop is not my genre and this style of pop/rap is definitely not in my realm. 3/5 ⭐️ 70/1089
This album is quintessential late '80's pop-schlock. Buffalo Stance was a massive hit, and with it being the lead track, it's all pretty much downhill from there. Weird synths, manufactured beats from a box, it's everything that was going on around that time. Neneh has a lovely voice, but the lyrics she's singing are very surface level. 3 stars for the nostalgia factor.
Zone out a bit. It's aight
Definitely from the 80s thats for sure, but it was a decent listen. The lyrics were quite good from what I heard, and I would probably give it a 4 if I liked that type of music more
Hadn't heard of her before, but I quite enjoyed it
Old school r&b sound with some early hip hop influences. The synthesizers and production is simple, but effective and complements Neneh's vocals and lyrics. The songwriting is relatable, but nothing thought-provoking. It's an ok record.
Wellknown boomer Pop of the 80's from Sweden.
Raw Like Sushi is definitely an album right. I didn't really know what to expect going into this, and I came away with an album that I could definitely say things about. This is a VERY late-80s album in terms of the production. It's kind of like a mix of dance music, pop, and even a bit of rap. It is a tad dated, but not really in a bad way. It doesn't do the album any favors, but it doesn't actively make for bad experience. There are some solidly produced moments, which isn't exactly surprising given the album's connections to various members of Massive Attack. I do think the album has some more significant flaws though. I think the whole "gimmick" of the album wears off before the album ends. The album starts off fairly well with "Buffalo Stance" and "Manchild." Those songs are pretty good, but I think the song quality does dip as the album goes on. It never gets truly bad, but the album does start on its highest note and go down from there. I think Neneh Cherry's voice is good enough for the music. She's got the energy. This isn't really my kind of thing, I'll be honest. I've got respect for it and I can't say that it's a bad inclusion on the list, but it's not something that I get too much out of. It's solid, but I think it could be improved upon. 3/5.
Girl power rap
I remember Buffalo Stance being all over the radio, but I'd never heard the rest of the album until now. It sounds so... normal, compared to the free-spirited wackiness of Buffalo Stance. There are several late-80s soul songs (sung well!) and more raps, and it's all fine, but nothing too distinctive.
Dated but fun. Buffalo stance is by far the best song
This was fine. I can respect that it helped define a new type of genre but not really my vibe. Neutral for uniqueness.
This was a fun pop album that yes, might be a bit dated in some aspects, but nevertheless is reflective of that style of pop at the turn of the '90s.
This album is a sterotypically-80s-produced album, that tends to have rapping in the verses and then melodic singing in the chorus. The choruses tend to be quite long and are repeated often - usually in the outro - just like the Like A Prayer album by Madonna (another album released in 1989.) It's an alright album but probably won't revisit. Highlight Song/s: "Buffalo Stance" and "Manchild"
Did not age well. At least it was kinda interesting for a late 80s album I guess
Solid pop album, better than I expected
Worldview lyrics and classic 80s bops
very 80s. not very catchy
I loved the spanish moments. The instrumental are really fun and the flows too. I dont really resonated with the differents subjects but the overall music, even if you guess easily that it from 1989, is great.
Listenable
cool but aint my jam
Fun, fun, fun. Really enjoyed this one. Great start to the album with Buffalo Sauce and the good songs keep coming. The Next Generation was another favourite. Looking forward to more Neneh
This was fine.
I didn’t mind this. It kind of sounded like an edgier version of Madonna.
Buffalo stance is a 10, but the rest of the album did nothing for me. Bummer.
This is cool enough but gets a bit monotonous after awhile. A bit too long also. I like her voice though
Not bad, but very dated in a not so flattering way. Can’t take away from Neneh’s voice though.
it doesn't have originality or timelessness or lyricism or novelty or replayability, but it is like, kind of mildly charming
Not a bad first listen. This album is aggressively late 80s. I'm wondering if the Massive Attack connection warrants it's inclusion here.
Well... I thought it would be worse. And, I have to admit I've enjoyed it pretty much. It's not that I would listen to this album much, and I wonder if I will listen to it again (probably not), but it's been nice. Some songs are kind of good. It gets very funky at times and with a lot of fun. But there are also a lot of songs that are just... there. Some songs that are terrible, in a bad sense. It's not that the album is great, for sure, and it's not the kind of music I would listen to, neither consider good. It's a very eighties-entering-the-nineties album, with hip-hop influences and funk-meets-house. Well, not something much of my like, but really something to enjoy. If you are in the mood.
Extremely dated, but has some really good songs in the first half. I started to lose interest towards the end.
Not bad, pleasantly dated … but also remember her sound and her look being so different, so cool
Attitude and delivery are great, musically eclectic. Neneh has undeniable charisma and fluency from the jump- wish there were more records to follow. Rest of album may suffer a bit from the monumental greatness of ‘Buffalo Stance.’
This is very much a product of its time like most 80s hip hop, but I did like it. Buffalo Stance is the only one I'd heard before but is a GREAT song (I somehow have the single on vinyl). The rest of the album doesn't quite approach that, but I do like some of the almost European pop influences throughout, that I think set this apart from some other contemporaries like Queen Latifah or Salt N Pepa. Not a bad listen at all, not amazing.
3.5
Temp
Big A and I ripped an ab workout during this and I found the beats to be quite motivational. So I’ll give it the bump, though it’s probably more of a 2.5
I expected this to be a horny album and it did not disappoint. Don't know if the sound has aged particularly well but it's definitely a toe tapper. Pleasantly surprised.
Its not Neneh Cherry's fault, but this album reminds me of Sesame Street. Probably just because they played a lot of similar sounding music when I watched in the early 90s. Doesn't make it bad but it does mean I likely wouldn't seek it out. Also it's kind of funny hearing music I associate with Sesame Street discuss such adult themes.
Buffalo Stance was a great song! Ive never heard it before but its just a real 80s jam. It would fit in perfectly if they remade clueless in the 80s. The rest of the album isn't as good unfortunately
Surprisingly didn't dislike it as much as I thought I would.
The beats are fun
Good solid pop
I quite enjoyed a lot of this. 1989 rap/hip hop, and it sounded exactly like that period.
Album #1,004 Only listened to the original LP tracks, no bonus tracks. It's decent sounding pop with some cheesy rapping in spots. She sounded black or Puerto Rican. I never would have guessed she was born in Sweden. Anyway, the music is not really notable, but also not unlistenable.
This is so dated. It's not horrible, but all the songs have the same synth-pop sound.
Day 133 Few nice songs here and Buffalo Stance is obviously a banger. Was surprised to see a member of Massive Ataack involved with this album but can definitely hear it in some of the mellower tracks Highlights Buffalo Stance Kisses on the Wind
rating based on original tracklist only Buffalo Stance - 4/5 Manchild - 3/5 Kisses on the Wind - 3/5 Inna City Mama - 4/5 The Next Generation - 2/5 Love Ghetto - 3/5 Heart - 4/5 Phoney Ladies - 3/5 Outré risqué locomotive - 4/5 So Here I Come - 2/5 Average score: 3.2/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ my ears are so... confused? part of me wants to hate on this. like others have mentioned, it sounds very much like it came out of the late-80s, and it has NOT aged well. on another hand, she sounds like she's having so much fun it's hard to take it seriously or give some sour critique
I actually had fun with this one. Though since there's about 4 female artists on this list, I'm not sure why this one made it. Pretty repetative
Decent
This album does take me back. It’s as silly now as it was in 1989 but it is non-offensive and casually fun.
3- Stars (7/15)
would like to give it 3.5 as i really like it but it doesn’t quite live up to my 4 star expectations
6/10
Buffalo Stance has to be a top 10 80s song and the reason for an extra star. Manchild is great and the overall motif running through about girl power is fun.
Album 30 - Neneh Cherry - Raw Like Sushi - 3/5 I enjoyed this a lot but am giving it a 3 because I don't think I'm likely to return to it. The spirit in which I enjoyed it comes from being a white kid from the suburbs who grew up in the 90s. Sometime in elementary school I started listening to Top 40 radio. For a couple of years there I could probably sing all the words of all the hits, whether they were alternative, R&B, hip hop or pop. I saw the sign and I'm afraid of Americans and I don't want no scrubs and I say hey what's going on. But like a lot of kids my age, I eventually learned what kind of music I was "supposed" to be listening to. As a local radio station used to put it, "no rap, no country" -- a particular kind of white identity. I deepened my knowledge of rock and folk and punk, but wouldn't have admitted how much a younger version of me had loved TLC and En Vogue and Boyz 2 Men. As with any most white kids listening to that music, there was a kind of fantastical imaginary relationship to some of the subject matter. We pretended we were going to a party on the West Side where "all the gangbangers forget about the drive by." Anyway, this kind of 80s hip hop brings me back to that joyous childhood place. It's absolutely a part of my experience of listening to R&B and hip hop today, the understanding that this was an experience I lost touch with through America's never sleeping racial sorting system. In that sense the album is a five. And everyone is right, "Buffalo Stance" is a banger and anticipates groups like Massive Attack. But at the same time I've listened to enough contemporary hip hop at this point that the rap on other tracks seems kind of rudimentary. I'd be happy if I encounter any of these tracks in the wild but probably won't put on the album again.
Kult
This is so far-eighties there should be hatecrime laws for it. The lyrics couldn't possibly be more shallow and superficial but sometimes that just is what you're after. A lot of these songs and the production also reminds me of many different Mega Drive games' soundtracks, which is a nice bonus. Overall I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
A not unpleasant slice of late 80s hip hop influenced poparama
It's actually a hip-hop-like album that didn't immediately make me want to turn it off. I found the music quite funny in places. Still, I probably won't listen to it again. 3/5
I appreciate Raw Like Sushi more than I like it. I can remember watching the "Buffalo Stance" video on MTV back in the day, but it was not my jam. A month before Raw Like Sushi came out, The Cure released Disintegration. Now THAT was my jam.
i had high hopes going into this album... i really wanted to like this album... buffalo stance was one of those serendipitous singles that found its way into my library years ago and has since become a personal classic with high replay. so imagine my disappointment listening to the rest of the album and not getting even a CRUMB of what i was expecting from a european act with an eclectic genre blend released on the eve of the 80s - what the hell man!!! i guess i should be kinder (as i've been in other reviews) for trailblazing acts that stand as the forebearers and foundation for what's to come, but dang!!! come on!!! highlights - buffalo stance, kisses on the wind, the next generation
When I first listened to this I actually enjoyed it enough I was considering it as a 4. However it doesn't really stand up on a later relisten, and there's not much I'd listen to outside it. I am very amused by it though. Why, that's the next generation!
Buffalo Stance started this album off strong, but unfortunately outside of a few more standout moments like the piano in Inna City Mamma, there really wasn't much to this one, I'm afraid. A solid 6/10, mostly on the merit of Buffalo Stance alone.
This is a fun peek into pre-90s hip hop, but it really hasn't aged very gracefully -- it's downright cheesy listening to it today. It blew my mind going to her artist page after listening to this, and seeing Kids With Guns as her most popular feature. I would never have made the connection! Standouts: Inna City Mamma • The Next Generation • So Here I Come
Felt weirdly in between eras
++: The Next Generation, Phoney Ladies, Outré Risqué Locomotive, So Here I Come +: Manchild, Kisses on the Wind, Inna City Mamma, Love Ghetto, Heart +-: Buffalo Stance 6,0/10
One of a kind. Very original and never been copied.
Aggressively 1989
Nothing really outstanding for me, but nothing particularly wrong with it
Almost a 4, but 3
Enfim, esse disco me surpreendeu. 3.5/5
Good album, classic hip hop with 80s pop mix
It’s fun but the old school rapping always sounds cringey to me. But really catchy
Was expecting more. Ok better than a lot of 80’s dross but not really as sassy or innovative as some think it is. While it tackles a lot of womanhood themes I think the lyrics are a bit basic and sometimes cringey. Buffalo Stance is the standout. Not offensive - average fairly pleasant pop music. 2.9
Raw, like a slice of well produced 80’s pop. This is good at what it does. it probably sounds like a better version of Paula Abdul, but I really don’t want to find out. Not my cup of chai, but delivers some fun tunes esp the big hits. I was tempted to mark this down a star because of her incorrect use of sushi. The pedant in me needs to point out that sushi isn’t raw, the rice is cooked. She’s thinking of sashimi. Anyway, I’ll never listen to it again.
Album No. 0065 on my list. I had never heard of Neneh Cherry before; this was something completely new to me. At first, I was very positively surprised, “Buffalo Stance” is a pretty cool song. Cool hip-hop/pop combination. Sounds very much like the year it was released in (1989), but that is not necessarily a bad thing. “Manchild”, and “Kisses on the Wind” follow next, and I liked both songs as well. However, things get a little more boring and interchangeable afterwards. The pop/hip-hop sound continues and the lyrics are similar and revolve around the same concepts. To summarize: a solid pop album, glad I listened to it, especially the first parts. 3/5 stars.
Reminded me of michael jackson, it was alright
Favorite Track: Buffalo Stance
"Buffalo Stance" is the best song here. The rest is rather forgettable.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting. The whole album has a corny late 80s / early 90s vibe that is incredibly dated, and yet, I kind of find it endearing; like, this kind of sounds like a John Hughes movie or something. Also, Buffalo Stance is legitimately a great song, but the quality drops off a bit after and the album is definitely dragging on by the end.
Funky.
Put Buffalo Stance on a mixtape. Certified banger.
I’m sorry, who is this? I feel like I’ve at least heard of 99% of the artists on this list. The album is super fun and painfully 80s. I could do a dance class in spandex to this.
I had absolutely no idea what to expect here, but it actually did start to grow on me a bit. I struggle to understand "Buffalo Stance", specifically the buffalo aspect. "Kisses On The Wind" is a favorite on one of my weird local radio stations, so I was surprised that that one wasn't actually well-known because I totally recognized it. Overall not really my thing, but not bad.
3 not my favorite but not unlistenable
Ihan ok biisejä, mutta ehkä vähän tylsäksi käy loppua kohti.
I have actually listened to a few of the songs from this project many many years ago, and yet I never finished it. Thankfully today I finally got through this album in its' entirety and I really wish I had stuck it out all those years ago. Neneh Cherry is not an artist I am particularly familiar with, but the fact that she was a popping 80s Rap MC in a time when it wasn't common at all for women to make Rap music, she instantly stood out as somewhat of an icon in her genre. Her Boom Bap/Pop Rap style is definitely a product of its' time and yet still holds up as being a bold staple of 80s Hip Hop. The bars are fun and cheeky and never take themselves too seriously and Neneh seems to be having a lot of fun all throughout this entire project. Far from being a Hip Hop classic, but I'd say it is quite important to hear this album if you have the chance to. Nuff said.
The riff on buffalo stance is an earworm, manchild is lovely - you can hear how some of this is absolutely ahead of its time, but there's so much that is very 80s rhyming and drums...
This album is definitely very dated, but it was upbeat and energetic so its age didn’t hinder my enjoyment. It’s not typically what I’d listen to, but that’s the entire reason I started this list in the first place.
Not bad
It was ok at the time and it’s still Ok-ish
The epitome of the late 80s/early 90s sound.
I don't think I ever knew that Neneh Cherry hailed from Sweden; this unexpected origin makes the album a bit more interesting, but only a little (although the "1001 Albums" entry provides some interesting background context for her). I'm not a big fan of late 80s pop, and this falls squarely in that slot, with a bit of edge occasionally. "Buffalo stance" is kind of mesmerizing (both song and video), but mainly because I have no idea what that phrase is supposed to mean (even after reading the Wikipedia entry for the album and that song specifically), although it's clear it provides her some extra swagger. Similarly, "Manchild" feels a bit hypnotic, especially the video to it, with an equally ambiguous meaning (but certainly more interesting than Sabrina Carpenter's similarly titled hit). The rest of the album feels like a cross between Janet Jackson and Britney Spears, although to her credit she composed or collaborated on all of the tracks; "The next generation" and "Phoney ladies" are probably the best of the lot (in a very 80s way).
I liked Buffalo Stance and want Neneh and Sabrina to do a "Manchild" battle. After the first few songs, the album started to feel a little repetitive and her rapping got predictable.
This one sounded like your prototypical 80s pop and R&B album, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It’s got that clean production, punchy beats, and catchy choruses that define the era. Nothing groundbreaking, but it hits that nostalgic sweet spot if you’re in the mood for it. “Buffalo Stance” is easily the standout track. It’s slick, fun, and still holds up as one of the best examples of late 80s pop done right. “My Bitch” was another solid one with some attitude that gave the record a little more bite. Other than that, the rest of the album blends together a bit, but it’s a smooth, easy listen. Raw Like Sushi might not reinvent the wheel, but it nails the sound of its time and delivers a few tracks worth coming back to.
Actually a pretty good album. Sounds are very good, even if she isn't the greatest singer.
Pure, refined 80s. Kinda enjoyed
Pretty good, nice and poppy. But not really my thing generally.
Zabavan album iako dosta dated
It’s not anything revolutionary or life-changing, but it’s definitely enjoyable. I can’t really think of much else to say about it. 3/5
Listened Before? N Pretty good late 80's/early 90's dance album. Buffalo Stance is an absolute classic. The rest is pretty standard stuff. Nothing groundbreaking but a good listen if you're into the style. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Buffalo Stance
Just looking at the cover and release year I had to will myself to listen to it. It’s the sound one would expect, but surprisingly it wasn’t a terrible listen. She has good instincts on melody and the music sounds of the era, but more fresh than I would’ve guessed. Reading her Wikipedia I think Cherry’s history, musical connections, and musical family are a more interesting story and help understand the influence she has had, but this album is not a must listen. 3 stars, but I will never listen to this again. The Buffalo Stance music video is a MUST WATCH. If I didn’t know better I’d think it was a parody of the time.
pretty good! nice sound
So "of the time." Very dated sound (what I call "early CD" with lots of wide dynamic range and bright, often harsh high-ends). Musically pretty good--Nenah Cherry is the daughter of Don Cherry. She's no slouch, but this New Jack-ish sound didn't age well.
It is really hard to make earnest political/social commentary without sounding like a dork. Neneh didn’t pull it off either.
There are a few standout tracks but the rest is nothing special
Cool but I don’t like rap
decent enough r&b album. reminds me a lot of her contemporaries, similarly to the janet jacksons and paula abduls of the world. not anything here that's particularly awful, but also nothing here that's mindblowing. decent. middle of the road.
I really liked the first track, but the rest of the album was just kinda mid.
I liked the first half more than the second.
surprised by this. obviously has the 2 hits but didn't expect anything from it. some nice if repetitive themed songs. definitely worth a listen
Once again wondering why an album has ended up in the top 1001. There doesn't seem to be any justification for it on Wikipedia. Is it because she raps and sings?
I had to teleport myself back to the 80s to appreciate this without it sounding so dated.
This is pure 1989. Good, but frozen in time. I liked Buffalo Stance when it came out, and never heard the entire album. His brother did pretty good, Eagle Eye Cherry. 3/5
6/10
I kinda wanted to hate it when I saw the name, the cover, the year of the release (1989). I expected the same "bratty female rapper stuff" as it was usual for the time. Well, it was an Ok listen. Nothing you need to listen before you die, but worthwhile. That was not because of the main artist here. Ms Cherry was standard. She had a great team of producers who created great, genre-bending sounds. One of them was Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack. So in this respect you could call the sound a "Massive Attack spinoff".
I love the beats on this album and it has some hooky refrains like on Buffalo Stance. I don't love all of the raps which drops it one star. I think this is worth hearing for a great collection of beats from this era
3/5. Overall solid. Very 80s michael jacksony sound but with early rap/hip hop influences as well. Didn't especially hate any song on here.
Late 80's rap/hip-hop and it scratches (no pun intended) a very particular itch.
Parts fun, parts repetitive. Will likely not listen again but did a little boogie.
I have to admit that this was a lot better than I was anticipating. Only knew Buffalo Stance, a lot of it a similar vein, although not as catchy. This feels like 1989, must be same era as when Madonna was trying out a similar vibe. I panicked when I saw 1989 and thought that this may have been included genre-wise at the expense of De La Soul's 1989 debut, but fortunately not as that would have been a rap crime.
Incredibly lame. "You're a outré risqué locomotive, driving me crazy."
It was ok. I like dip the first song but then they felt really repetitive and same. Good music though.
Interesting elements from multiple genres, but alas it still has a very deep late 80's pop sound that just doesn't do it for me
Maybe this is a 3.5, and I think "Buffalo Stance" is strangely addictive and enticing to listen to, but most of it doesn't really stand up to me, and even in 1988, I think there were more interesting hip-hop acts that stand up better. I don't doubt there aren't other Cherry albums that are worth being on this list, but I'm not sure I believe this is actually one.
Bizarre, pas mon style Mélange rap, r'n'b, soul
This was a massive album in 1989, which coincided with my conventional nightclub days, dressed in suits and the cattle market at the end of the night, which I used to sit out more often than not. Ahhh poor me. They used to play stuff like this which was on the better side of the tracks when it came to pop music. I have only listened to this once since the 80's and have even seen her daughter live in the time it has taken me to get round to it again! Its pretty good , but does sound like a product of its time, that's not bad thing as it made me remember happy times with friends.
3 1/2 stars. It started out as 2 but there are a lot of good songs. I really like So Here I come.
good debut album
Hip hop noventero interesante
Eh. It was fine. Sounded very dated, but fine. 5/10
I liked it till Love Ghetto after that I wasn't feeling the music or lyrics.
3.0
not sure if i’m a fan. i like the singing parts and i don’t like the rapping parts because it’s just outdated flow.
very 80s
Die Brücke zwischen hiphop und Madonna. Zugegeben sehr überraschend für mich
2.9/5
This was a surprise honestly. It's very cheesy and dated but man is it a good time. I do wish it was more trip hoppy because the electronic elements were definitely the highlight for me but oh well. I love getting little gems like this from the generator. Makes the whole thing totally worth it! Favorite track: Buffalo Stance 3.5/5
Sounded exactly like what you’d expect from the release date!! Decent but not my favorite, got a bit long for me at over an hour. 2.5/5 okay but won’t seek it out again
Not quite my vibe, but respect how singular it is.
Buffalo stance what a song, the whole album pops of imo nothing special but definitely chill vibes.
Enjoyed more than I expected as it's not my favourite genre
Har varit sparsamt med blågula skivor här. Hade kanske inte förväntat mig denna. Kommer undan med hedern i behåll.
p617. 1989. 3 stars. Some cracking tunes here, and it sounds fresh 30 years on. At the time, there was nothing quite like it. Having said that, not my thing, hence 3 stars.
Had a fun time listening and reminiscing about a time period with this one. Wouldn't put it on - but wouldn't turn her off either.
It's fine
Very much a product of its era, this was a moderately fun listen.
First track is good, some songs I felt second-hand embarrassment for her. Dated hip-hop.
Hip for an old school late 80s album.
Fairly by the numbers for the time period, but Buffalo Stance and Manchild are bangers that elevate the whole
Often compared to both Prince and Madonna, this album is a mixture of Hip Hop / New Jack Swing / R&B. Meh!
This album sounds like what I imagine the 80s sounded like. The album comes off as very generic with most of the songs sounding like copies of other more popular songs which came before. The rap aspects of the album also fall flat, however I still enjoyed the songs. The lyrics on the album are also unimaginative
Not a bad album. Not a good one either. Very unremarkable. Not sure why it’s on this list.
Some deep lyrics that i didnt picked up on in the 80’s.
Again with some great songs, but not the best album from the artist. I think this guy is just pulling from Rolling Stone data from the 90s and early 00s.
Parhaat: Kisses On The Wind, Outré Risqué Locomotive
Listening, I thought this was so 90s, but maybe that's because it was ahead of its time. Synthy, wild, pop/r&b. I don't love this record--except Buffalo Stance of course--but I respect it.
I owned this on cd but haven’t listened to it in decades. She’s doing some pioneering work fusing rap, funk, soul, and pop, especially as a female artist with a strong lyric point of view, but disappointingly, the production sounds dated and some of the songs are mediocre.
Another interesting album
Interesting
• okay album • not my vibe or preference • couple of songs i could vibe with • probably wouldn't listen to it again
This album is actually quite unique for the time as it somewhat pioneered the Hip-Hop Soul genre that was relatively big in the early 90's, but apart from the big singles, it's just ok pop rap. However, I cannot write about Neneh Cherry without recommending her incredible 2014 record Blank Project, a combination of jazzy art pop and downtempo that honestly sounds unlike anything a was my Album of the Year that year. Go listen to that one, too. Key tracks: Buffalo Stance Manchild
Some catchy songs but still indistinguishable from other 80's pop
Nota: 3.1
It's immediately apparent what era this album was made - it's so 80s it almost comes off as a cliche in 2025. But Neneh Cherry's sheer swagger is so much fun to listen to, I didn't mind one bit.
"Operate on a baby? Uhhnn! Sick." A 1989 hip-hip/pop debut by a Swedish artist that's maybe a little bit cornball. It has some charm and I don't hate it, but it does feel dated.
Ah, the old days. Smells like a junior high dance.
Quite a fun listen with cool beats and rhythms, but it's one of those albums that didn't stand the test of time, and it has that very dated late 80s production. I love her later songs especially the megahit 7 seconds from the mid-1990s.
Surprised I’ve never heard of Neneh Cherry because I vibed with this as I love me a female rapper. She’s also on a Gorillaz song that is usually on heavy rotation in my house. Definitely a few good standout songs. I’m surprised Buffalo Stance is the single or most popular of this album because that was a weird track IMO. Her messaging (ie the next generation) stands the test of time.
Ignore the one-star reviews. This sounds like late-80s hip-hop because that's what it is, except more European. It's not my favorite thing, but three stars because "Manchild" has been mesmerizing me since 1989.
Second half of the album was much better than the first. Still, while I can appreciate what 80s hip hop did for the genre, I am glad we moved on.
Funny, cheesy, dancey, its good old school pop/maybe hip hop? But it has a nice personality thats fun and casual.
3.5 stars. 80's hip hop from artist with interesting background/upbringing. Incorporates elements of 80's pop, seems genuine lyrically and has a nice singing voice. First two tracks are great, "Buffalo Stance" especially.
Enjoyed this quite a bit. Inna City Mama was an absolute jam, what a killer piano solo thrown in there.
Better than I anticipated, I thought it remained fun throughout, I enjoyed her energy and was bopping along the whole time. Fun little Hip hop record
I liked the first song on the album and the rest were just okay.
man, da kommen Erinnerungen hoch :-)
Did you know this album came out in June 5th, 1989? It's also my birthday so hell yeah to that coincidence. Anyway, this album... is a lot of things, it's funny to remember that Neneh Cherry is not only Don Cherry's (step) daughter but also that she was involved in a lot of weird punk bands of the late 70s. Then you have the fact that she helped to plant the seeds for what would become the trip hop wave in the 90s by helping many of the artists in the whole Bristol sound scene. It's interesting to think about the many punks who were very into the sounds of hip hop and electronic music (Bjork, The Beastie Boys, Blondie, to name a few) and just were there for it when it started. All of that makes listening to Raw Like Sushi interesting, because it's both very ahead of the curve but also SO painfully of it's era, someone on RYM commented: "the most 1989 album to ever be recorded" and it's basically true. I can't exactly say that Neneh is a bad rapper/MC when this era of rap wasn't what it is now, it's very simple rhymes and flows which weren't uncommon during this time; despite this though, I think she is still a really fun presence and hypeman (hypegirl?) even if it isn't the most technical bars ever, and plus she sings great in some of these songs (Buffalo Stance's chorus is killer). I think the part that shines best in this album is the production, not every beat is amazing but the smooth and chill beats and some of the more cut up and intricate stuff sounds a lot of how the later trip hop and electronic stuff in the UK would, it's so easy to hear this and go "oh yeah, make it sadder and it's a Portishead beat" for me and I think that's part of why I enjoy this album way more than I would if I wasn't already a fan of trip hop and other 90s british downtempo shit. All around, a messy but fascinating album
Good album.
rythmic, fresh and funky, although i'm not very fond of the sound i can't escape it fully either!
Buffalo Stance is amazing, and it's all just mediocre after that.
The album is OK with a few great hits. But as I remember I eventually got tired of those in 1989, I got tired of this album before it ended. The my bitch song must have inspired the fresh prince but then without the humor.
Strong start, fell flat
Really liked it but all of the songs sound very similar.
Love Neneh Cherry! But this album is spotty at best. Not the sound she would grow into, but would rapidly grow out of.
Dug some of this, and some of it was corny as hell
Late 80’s, female led, power hip hop? Didn’t really enjoy this but I can definitely see why some would really dig it.
Syrh-heavy 80s pop/hip-hop is usually not my favorite but I thought this was pretty good at points. It drags by the end but “Buffalo Stance”, “Kisses On The Wind” and “Inner City Mama” are all quite good.
This album had some really fun elements, especially the 80s style pop production with its sharp synth stabs and the way Neneh Cherry blends hip-hop, pop, and house. On the flip side, her sassy rapping, along with her word choices and overall flow, just doesn’t work for me, instead it feels dated and hasn’t stood the test of time at all. Thankfully, she doesn’t rap through the whole album, switching between singing and rapping instead. When she’s singing, especially in the more pop-driven parts, I found those moments enjoyable. But when she’s rapping, it’s like Chinese torture to my ears. After listening to the album, I looked into Neneh Cherry’s background and learned she’s been deeply involved in music since the late 70s, even playing a role in the UK punk scene as a member of The Slits. Unfortunately, I’m not a fan of The Slits either, and I think they too are kind of annoying, but I’ll give her credit where it’s due for her contributions and how she’s crossed over through so many different style of music.
It's alright but nothing special and it felt a bit long.
I've never listened to this before, but it's oddly reminiscent of that style of pop when I was just starting to take notice of music. Makes me think of listening to Weetabix Top Track cassettes on my walkman (even though Nenah Cherry wasn't on any of them - I checked). Also reminded me about Save Tonight by her half-brother, Eagle Eye Cherry - a 90s banger
Buffalo Stance still whips, bubbling with energy, but not every track has stood the test of time so well. Three stars for the glorious, chuckled, "what is 'e loike?"
Fun! Before my time, but somehow nostalgic.
344/1001 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑
Incredibly of its time, probably too much of its time
Sounds to me like a classic late 80s pop album with some hip hop and Latin influences
This has Paula Abdul vibe with more rap-esque content. I'm sure this album is some 1980's-ophile's guilty pleasure, and I'm not gonna try to convince them they should think otherwise.
I kind of liked this album. It was nice to recognize a song!
I liked this at the time it came out (and I think bought it on CD?), but it sounds a bit dated now. Still pretty fun in places, though, especially Buffalo Stance. So Here I Come is good too
I think Neneh Cherry was very important ‘At the time’. She seems dated now and those 80s arrangements are distinctive but I don’t remember anyone quite like her then. I still love Buffalo Stance and Manchild!
