Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Actually very nice and smooth for background listening. I wouldn't listen to this on my headphones but playing this on my speakers while chilling in bed, for example. Pretty relaxing album.

This was smooooth. But not exactly memorable, unfortunately.

Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite is the debut album by American R&B singer-songwriter Maxwell. This groovy R&B album contains elements of soul, funk, and jazz, and is credited with shaping the emerging neo soul genre. A few months after release, this album's second single released and with that the commercial success of this album took off. Critics lauded Urban Hang Suite and called it a masterpiece for its change of pace from the standard hip hop R&B of the time. Maxwell won a handful of Grammy's with this album and it is regarded as his best work. Urban Hang Suite is certified double platinum in the US and gold in the UK. This is the epitome of the romantic, classic R&B music genre. It has the sexy grooves and mesmerizing lyrics that leave you feeling hot and satisfied. It's a great album that should be listened to by all music lovers.

Very Funky and jazzy. Good listening all around. Nothing that sticks out tho

It sounds great, the playing is flawless, and the vibes are all kinds of warm and sexy. But the songs don’t really grab me. Admittedly this might be a product of this being a first listen, but I can’t find much to grab onto in the songs themselves, despite the many other strengths.

Easy Saturday morning listen.

Hm some R&B Jazz. I can dig this. It was nice relazing music in the background. Smooth and romantic. 3 stars.

First hearing, very smooth - possibly too much so? Favourite track Dancewitme

It’s got some good grooves.

i found myself intrigued by maxwell's debut album! this was one of the easiest listens ever. maxwell's romantic voice, the soul genre, how smooth the music is, the delightful horns. the lyrics, though, didn't seem to matter. the focus was definitely more on the instruments and the soothing vocals. also, this is some powerful baby making music.

Seems like a good representative of its genre. Sexy time music!

Nice. Chill vibes abound.

It was very nice, but very repetitive and ultimately kind of dull. Like an aural bowl of tomato soup. Nice but not very exciting.

Now I know what they mean when they say music is smooth. This went down really easy. It was an hour of nothing, but I didn’t hate it.

Smooooooooooth. Not something I'll listen to again, though. 3/5

This one really melted into the background. Aside from one lyric that I heard as far more explicit than it actually was, nothing interesting about this one.

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Not a huge RnB fan but it was enjoyable. Well done songs. Wouldn't listen again.

1990s Luther Vandross everyone. Good grooves and easy to listen to.

Was groovy to put on while I cleaned and did self care but idk that I'd actually put it on to f*ck someone lmao

Typische Loungemusik. Sehr gefällig.

Was liking it from the start then I woke up and it was over.

3.4 Good

I kind of enjoyed it but also got bored of it pretty fast. Much better works out there in this genre.

Groovy album that I did not know about!

Smooth like butter. Not entirely my jam, but I get why this was so influential.

6.5/10 Actually enjoyed this quite a bit, it has vibes. And the vibe is horny. Really nice neo soul with edges of funk and R&B Preferred the funk stuff (slap bass and wah wah guitars!) to the jazz stuff Great singing voice, nice falsetto Can still hear plenty of stuff like this today, so it has legs Best: …Til the cops come knockin’

not my favorite genre but you can tell this is well made

Fairly generic R&B from the 90s revival era. Not bad background music for the house or bedroom.

Not a big fan of smooth jazz anymore. It was ok

There's other soul I'd reach to first, and maybe I missed out on something by not banging someone else at the same time, but, hey, it's still pretty good tunes.

Has some good tracks, but otherwise kinda just in one ear and out the other.

Kind of a sleepy feeling. Everything is decent, but I'm also nodding off a bit.

Pretty good R&B

It's chill, but that's pretty much it.

Vibesy- nice

Great background music for working.

Smooth, funky, slightly forgetable.

Smooth R&B jams.

Nondescript background tracks. Ok but not sure a second listen will improve

Snoozefest

Great beats, the vocals don't do it for me.

I didn't like it at first when it started, but I guess it was a manner of mood since I was kind of enjoying it, and I reached the end of the album. It's not outstanding, but it's a warm song for the background in the cold days.

It’s fine. Not my taste but good for what it is. Like a 00s Luther Canaria Vandross

Listen up people, we're now knee deep in the neo-soul smoothness, and there's only one way out, make peace with whatever deity you choose to believe in (or not, free world) because Maxwell is gonna take you there. Where? That wet spot on the bed, that's where...

Soul music, Neo soul, Funk, Contemporary R&B, Jazz, Urban contemporary music, Quiet storm, Smooth jazz, Retro-soul

This was fine, but nothing really stood out other than "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)."

Good for some chill background music. But in general I'll pass. 3.5

This some music to fuck to lol

Was expecting to not really enjoy as I'm not the biggest fan of R&B. But this caught me, really smooth and catchy. Found myself grooving throughout. I liked it but can only listen to this so much, started to lose interest near the end.

Sure it get's redundant but who cares when your shagging to it.

This is music for one thing and one thing only. And best as just background, offering no distractions.

At first glance I was pretty overwhelmed by the stellar production and almost nausea-inducing butter-smoothness of the vocals. But as I dove deeper into the album I fell myself slowly losing interest. The last few songs are particularly monotonous and easily blends together into a soft, mushy pillow of delicious but boring songs. Had this been shortened by 2-3 songs it would have been so much better.

Good but so unnecessarily long

Smooth.

Like electronic sounds. No bad

I went into this with rolled eyes, prepared to hate it because R&B is just not a genre I care about at all. But I'm pleasantly surprised, and am actually finding this to be such an enjoyable album to kickstart my Monday morning. It is helping me get into a very focused and productive zone, and lulling me into a more laissez-faire mindspace. Thank you, Maxwell, for this time in your hang suite, much obliged!

B- The Urban Theme 3 Welcome 3 Sumthin' Sumthin' 3 Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder) 2 Dancewitme 3 ...Til the Cops Come Knockin' 4 Whenever Wherever Whatever 3 Lonely's the Only Company (I & II) 3 Reunion 3 Suitelady (The Proposal Jam) 3 The Suite Theme 3 ...Til the Cops Come Knockin' 3 I love R&B, but this is just so average. It isn't the Kollaps's that surprise me with their inclusion, it is the albums like this that do. Maxwell seasons his food strictly with salt and pepper.

smooth, sexy, 90s jazz r&b.

Never in my wildest dreams would I seek out an artist like this. The beauty of this website has introduced this album and artist to me. And I quite enjoyed it. Very soulful and funky at times. Music was very groovy. Vocals were reminiscent of a soulful Michael Jackson, which was great! I don't necessarily need this type of music in my life, but I love coming across it time to time.

On first listen, it sounded dated, with the sappy KennyG-like sax and other easy-listening tropes from the 80’s and 90’s. Two stars at best. On second listen I found more to like, and I’m bumping it up to three.

Chill. So chill that I forgot that I was listening to it… bit boring

I had high expectations because I really like his cover of This Woman's Work, but none of these songs hit me like that one. Great vocals and chill vibes for background music. Rating 6.9, I mean, 3.4, rounded down to 3.

Music for making love

Soulful, nice, lounge jazz pop.

i thought this album was pretty dated. Very good example of a particular moment in time

Cool funky grooves but also some unwelcome crooning.

This was fine, and I can't deny Maxwell's talent, but it's not really the type of music I'm into. It was fine as background music, but sort of boring when I really focused on it. "...Til the Cops Come Knockin'" was a definite highlight for me, though.

not gonna revisit this stuff

There's a time and a place for stuff like this. The morning commute is not one of these places unfortunately.

pretty barebones hotel lobby babymaking music. all these songs sound the same, and this album could easily be halved in length. though not the worst background music 2.5/5

Kinda funky.

Part homage to the funk and soul singers of the 70s and part reaction to the state of hip hop and R&B in the 90s. Probably the smoothest album you'd have encountered in 1996. In some ways, it borders on self-parody but it's an impressive work when listened to as a whole. While I wouldn't seek it out often, I liked it more than I expected to.

It may have stood out for its time, but just blends into the background with 30 years past.

Smooth. Don't usually listen r&b, but this was a vibe. Smooth.

this sure is some R&B slowjams. it sounds like something you would get in a fairly high class porno

Very smooth. Sooooo smooooooth.

música que le gustaría a mi viejo básicamente. 6.5/10

I like Maxwell, but this again falls in the debut album issue this project has. 3/5

This was some very stereotypical 90s love making R&B which is to say it isn’t terrible but it is a factor of its time. The smooth and slow instrumentals make this a pretty chill album overall and the singing is decent most of the time. It’s not bad but there isn’t anything too special about this album except that it executed in 90s R&B. 5.9/10

Maxwell's vocals are smooth and sound like a weaker George Michael, but he still goes hard in every song. There is nothing really significant to me about this album, as in it's usefulness is only regarded to driving or sex. I would probably not listen to this album otherwise. Production and vocals are great, very funky and similar sounding. But I do have to give credit, some of these songs, especially track #6, are so powerful and flowing with groove, there is surely art present on this record. Favorites: The Urban Theme / Welcome / Ascension / Til the Cops Come Knockin' / Suitelady

Seksi albumi miekkonen kuiskii seksin aikana kuuntele miekkonen siellä hurmaa kannattaa kokeilla seksin aikana albumin velhoudet iskee miekkonen siellä laulaa adult romance adult and other adult, very adult!

this album is more about vibes than songs

Smooth is the only word I can think of to describe this album. Smooooth

I feel I’ve heard this a million times by a million acts for at least a million days before this 1996 release. There’s a decent groove. Otherwise, meh.

Not bad...overall I have enjoyed some Neo-soul in the past, and this is about the best I have encountered. 3/5

I really liked this at first, but the slower stuff wasn’t for me.

Soul. R&B.

Sumthin, sumthin, whenever, wherever, whenever... You know what I'm sayin... This kinda album. Useful in some situations...

Who is/are Maxwell? Pretty funky actually, enjoyable but not a repeat listen candidate

- Super groovy and jazzy - Great late night soundtrack - Slows down a little bit in the second half, not sure if I'd go back to it - 2.5 - Til the Cops Come Knockin', The Suite Theme

Good Sunday neo-soul music.

I was so pumped for the first track, it was a great way to start the Monday drive to work. The later stages deteriorated into cheesy soft rock.

This had some elements of 90s R and B that used to turn me off: the louche lyrics, the air of arrogance, the soft jazz vibes. But I liked quite a bit of it and it sank in quite satisfactorily.

Very smooth R&B / Jazz / Soul. A bit too smooth, it doesn't really stick with me. Very relaxing music though, removing all stress.

Dit kan me eigenlijk niet behagen; veel te slick. Als achtergrondmuziek tijdens het werken is het wel te doen.

A decent soul album, doesn't really stand out

Good genre 90s soul. Smooth and silky but ultimately not my cup of tea. It’s good, just not something I’m likely to revisit.

Some grooves but also some elevator music

Interesting. I’ll have to give this another listen at a more appropriate time for this type of stuff

I feel like the style of songs were far too similar, but a decent 90's R&B album

The bass lines might have been my favorite part, some solid grooves.

Good background music, but not much more

Soul just really isn’t my jam. This was fine but I got pretty bored by the end.

Smooooooth. So smooth that my wife's face started getting flushed and then she slipped off her chair and fell to the floor. I think she's okay though, she just went to take a bath. Not exactly my favorite type of music but not bad either. Just sort of slid in one ear and out the other. 3 stars.

It wasn’t bad, but this was very forgettable R&B music, which isn’t really my thing

Nice and loungey, but overstays its welcome. 2.5/5

Maxwell wants to have sex. Watch out crack of dawn.

Smooth ambient album, but hardly memorable Saved tracks: Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder), Dancewitme, …Till The Cops Come Knockin’

Chill vibes, easy listening

It was good, that’s all I’ll say.

why do i keep forgetting

Very fluid and would definitely revisit - there were some areas that felt repetitive and too similar however overall pretty decent

Sopivan chilli levy maailman raskaimman työmatkapyöräilyn perään. Voi helposti kuunnella uudelleen.

Ihan jeekkis. Oli muutaman kerran kuuntelun jälkeen vielä käyttökelposta

Today’s artist is another that I’ve never heard of, and from a genre I rarely listen to. I’m going into this a little apprehensively, but still somewhat optimistically. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Whenever Wherever Whatever, The Suite Theme I think that the act of me listening to this album might have gotten everybody in my neighbourhood pregnant. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a solid hour of porntastic music before today, so I can now scratch that off my bucket list. This was soul/funk throughout and never strayed much from this. The musicians are clearly very talented and I did enjoy listening to this album, but I’m not sure it enticed me enough to want more. Overall, I enjoyed this and would recommend it to anybody trying for a baby.

особо не расслушала)

Pretty chill and sexy

Smooth

I found this album really tough to rate. It started off cool, but then it faded into the background while I was listening to it. A lot of it seemed to be pretty straightforward R&B. The quality of the album overall is good, but it didn't stand out to me as particularly groundbreaking in the context of when it was made. 3/5

Þessi plata byrjar á rosalega flottu grúvi og maður býst við hinu besta. En svo rennur þetta út í tilþrifaminni nýsoul. Rennur mjög ljúflega og allt það, en kveikir engan neista við fyrstu hlustun.

R&B that's so silky smooth. A lot of what this album has going for it is in the subtleties of it's production, letting the sounds build up and blend into a tasty neo-soul cocktail. My main gripe is that I don't find this sort of songwriting particularly interesting. For all the lovely things it has going for it, Maxwell is not for me.

Now I've had all the neosoul artists that are credited with the revival. Honestly, having listened to the others I found this was probably the strongest. A high 3, but with a lot of bloat and lackluster tracks that keep it from 4.

Vögelmusik.

good music. not my taste. didn't listen to all the songs..

Smooth, sultry understated evening R&B/jazz that will do well in a candlelit dinner or a late night wine bar. Best: Dancewitme Worst: Whenever Wherever Whatever 2.5 Stars

Good soul album from the 90s, didn't pique my interests.

Smooth soft-porn jams. Some very tasty melodic lines in there, but a real one-trick pony lyrical vibe.

In het algemeen wel een funky album. Ik vind het wel te zacht naar mijn smaak, zit te weinig pit in.

Nice chill vibes, and Ascension in particular was a big ol slice of groove, but it did get quite samey towards the end

Might be cool… The urban theme is a good opener as instrumentals go this is really pleasant. Welcome works really well bouncing off the last song his vocals sound perfect so do the instrumentals but the lyrics are quite filler. Sumthin sumthin is okay for a song that was released as a single though this seems like album filler. Ascension has the same kinda criticism to it it’s just so smooth that it just goes in one ear and out the other ( not what a single should be). Okay dance with me has a cooler rhythm the breathing strangely works quite perfectly 6 minutes does feel a drag for this song but it’s still cool. Again till the cops come knocking is literally one of the better songs but it just drags. Whenever wherever whatever is a nice tranquil break from the bulk of the album (but it happened too late). Lonely’s the only company ( 1 and 2) it’s a good sonic very morose but it actually fits well with it’s long time length. Reunion is a bit Basic and filler but nothing offensively bad. The penultimate track suitelady ( the proposal song) isn’t my kinda thing but I see why it could be a banger for some . The suite theme is a unique sounding closer for the album but like (almost) all of the 6 minuters on here it’s such a drag. With everything good about every song there is a criticism that comes with it a very easy 3/5.

A nice break from the usual rock fare, an R&B/soul project from someone I've never heard of. Is this the guy who makes the coffee? This was a decent project. His vocals aren't much to write home about, but the instrumentals were really solid. Still, fun to take a break from rock. Favorite tracks: The Urban Theme, Sumthin' Sumthin', Dancewitme. Album art: Kind of confusing here, is this a wall and floor meeting? The UPC on the front is throwing me off a bit too. Colors aren't bad but it's a bit boring. 3/5

Funky en zwoel R&B album. Niet echt m'n ding, vind het eerder iets voor op de achtergrond

I've had this guy pop up on a few of the Acid Jazz collections I bought back in the 90s. I remember that his songs weren't my favourites on the collection, a bit too sweet and smooth for me. Though he has a lovely voice, the instrumentation is subtle and the accompanying musicians are top-drawer.

So 90s it needs cargo pants. It's not my thing at all, but he's got a nice voice and some of the songs are well-written.

Started out groovy and fresh. Kept going and got stale. Seems that through the Album you can see the 90s "r&b" influence. Regardless there's some pretty great instrumental parts. Loved the bass early in the Album.

This was pretty smooth. No hard edges, all.... smooth. But I did fall asleep. In a nice way, but I still fell asleep. 3/5.

Not as sexy as they claimed it is. That voice alone can kill any sane guy's sex drive. The faster first tracks are actually a nice jam, but the latter, slower ones are pretty bland and boring. Overall, it's mostly soulless computerized soul. Not recommended for sexy sessions. Enjoy the vibe of the first half and stop as soon as it gets too slow.

I enjoyed the mix of jazz and modern r&b in the first song. The second song was a bit underwhelming. Sounds like classic 90's R&B music. Not a favored genre of mine or one that I'm very familiar with. It is easy to listen it and I don't hate it.

som agradável, suave

I really liked this. It slipped past me at the time, but I love this sonic update of the Curtis Mayfield sound.

Smooth, I like it. Not my normal jam, but good background music. 3

Funky. Decent r and b music. Ascension is a good song.

Some smooth grooves in there but that’s way too jiggy for me.

The one where Maxwell fucks off his silver hammer in favour of '70s soul tinged r'n'b.

It's nice background music - nothing special from what I can hear so far

I hope this album sounds just like it looks. Yep, sure does. Smooth and groovy. Of course, just the one groove, but it's a pretty good groove.

Background slow jams

Довольно типичный, но приятный соул. Хорошая музыка для свидания.

Soul lentillo. Ni fu ni fa.

Great album, with a smooth, sexy, retro vibe. My main critique is that so many of these songs are longer than they need to be, with more than half clocking in at over 5 minutes. It could be a tighter album. Still it's a lovely, fun listen. "Ascension" is the best song on the album, a classic. Fave Songs: Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder), Sumthin' Sumthin', Whenever Wherever Whatever, Dancewitme

OK. very slick. over produced. a bit boring.

-Cool bass line in "Sumthin' Sumthin'" -Generally pleasant R&B, but nothing super exciting

surprised. a throwback for sure. hints of curtis mayfield were nice

Very smooth, very slow, very sexy, very Marvin. Not very outstanding. Great musicianship, particularly sinuous bass lines that get under the skin. I like, but not extraordinary.

30 seconds into this I could tell I was going to like it. No idea how I missed this in the 90s. Honestly a little goes a long way though unless you’re in a bedroom situation.

Eh ein netter shaft Disco funk. Aber nix aufregendes

its fine

Not my thing. Was bored out of my skull 6/10 F.t.: Urban theme

Definitely feels very 90s R&B but it's a bit less hokey than most of that so I can enjoy it some more. The funk elements also add to it.

kinda groovy ngl 3.5

3/5 nice lounge sound, but nothing much.

Not great but didn’t hate it

7,8 Muito bom

Groovy, I suppose. But except for The Urban Theme, nothing struck a chord with me.

Was laughing out loud, have never heard of this guy before. Respect the commitment to the lovin'

We recognize that this was a pivotal album in the popularity of neo-soul, but it felt a lot like background music to a dentist's office or something

Surprisingly decent downtempo R&B

putting the fun in funky.

Serviu para conhecer novas opções de grooves

Suave. Tranquilo. Buena voz. No destaca especialmente.

Empezó fuerte y creí que me iba a gustar mucho y luego se hizo plano planísimo.

“Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite” by Maxwell (1996) R&B with a smooth jazz flavor. Very nice. Compositions and arrangements with foundations that could have been generated in the 70s are developed and matured with late 90s colorings. Truly beautiful. Maxwell has a very good voice, bringing forth standard R&B stylings with precision and flair. But he offers no real vocal surprises, which is mildly surprising for an R&B album from 1996. Shimmering waves of electronic background like fluid reflections of urban lights, undulating comfort and gratification. Summer. Nighttime. Driving slow. Mmmm. The album is an excellent example of thematic cohesion and development, moving from lovers’ introduction through courtship and (monogamous, mind you) romance, pain in separation, joy in “Reunion”, leading to marriage proposal in the final track. The album tells a story. And it’s a wholesome one, produced in an era that was famous for its urban cultural vectors that were misogynistic, violent, and dehumanizing. Maxwell, for one, respects his lady. Cool. The basic message of this album is that I have deep feelings, baby, and my best ones are coming your way. I wanna make love to you “Till the Cops Come Knockin’” (Now there’s an under-considered justification to defund the police. The social worker may as well stay home too.). An essential feature of any music in this genre is well designed and well executed bass lines. And this album excels in that department. All other performances are likewise first rate. Now I know that the return to vinyl has been all the rage for some time, but when scratches and pops are programmed in at 33rpm in order to simulate the LP experience (“The Urban Theme”), I’m distracted, disappointed, and mildly amused. I hope this is a fad that fades. Also, and fatally (in both the iTunes download and streaming on both Spotify and Apple Music), there’s an annoying repeating flaw in the left channel beginning at :29 in track 9 that continues through track 11, making them simply unlistenable. And it’s not the ‘simulated LP’ effect. What’s going on? It’s in the 2021 remaster, because it fades with close of tracks 9 and 10. What a spoiler. Brings the album down from a “5” to a “3”. This could have been a great album. But the listener is still left with one unanswered question: Did she say “Yes”? 3/5

Funk songs great, soul not my thing

2,7 Not sure if good office or bedroom music... Leuk voor in de achtergrond maar meer niet

Certainly had some promise, though it fades a bit too much by the end. Not enough energy to finish nicely. But enjoyable background music.

nothing completely special or out of this world but it was a funky and fun sound

Smooth jazz. Melodic and relaxing. Not a bad album but the main theme melody seems to be in every song, making the album feel a bit repetitive.

SLOW JAMS. Funky music to chill out to. Could be background music at a laid back coffee shop or party or something. Makes sense. Sounds like I'm at someone's "urban hang suite".

The downtempo sexy slow jams aren't my usual wheelhouse, but there are some smoldering jazzy tracks in here. A good find that I'd never heard of before.

Baš je ugodan album. Le sexy time. Warm record for sure, odlična kombinacija soul+jazz+rnb. Prvo sam mislio po imenu da idem slušat neki house, međutim dobro da nije.

Hustle Kings vajbovi sa vokalima brateeeeeeeeeee

Gutes RnB-Album.

Solider r b. Kommt aber nicht auf die playlist

Nobody wants to be here - the twilight sad

this music reversed my vasectomy

Good old school R&B. Can hear similarities to Sade and Erika Badhu. Nice background music; especially in a Spotify Playlist called Kitchen Swagger.

Quite liked it. Good bass

Really good.

Good neo soul album. Very atmospheric, ideal for intimate moments.

Funky music all throughout but kind of sounds like clothing store music. 6/10.

not for me brooooooo

The album carries a theme throughout and the production is really good and Maxwell delivers well. But I couldn’t help but find the songs a bit too long, slow and frankly, a tad boring at points.

Some more sex-having music. Sometimes it moves a bit too far into "weather channel" territory.

I was digging it at the beginning, but as it went on it kinda lost me. Favorite tracks: “Sumthin’ Sumthin’” and Dancewitme”

It started really good and it was a nice breathe of fresh air after yet another dreadful new/synth wave album (the 19th one!) but it started dragging after a while. i like the istruments and I think is good overall.

started off good but then got a little boring/too easy-listening

Baby making music. I get it. A little repetitive over an hour.

i'm confused as to how the mid-90s produced such a mid-80s album. i am not a fan, but there's huge talent here.

Quite a vibe. Definitely something I would put on again

It starts so strong, and then drags and gets too midnight stormy.

Very very smooth. I liked it.

First impressions, oooh this is nice. Funky grooves. I do not know much of the genre "neo-soul". This does not sound like 1996 at all. Very modern sounding, if this is the original they did an amazing job in the production, sounds like a modern remaster. Love the bass on this, the piano, the synths, the sax. All the instrumentation is superb. Vocals are good, if not straightforward, but I would almost prefer it without. I like the falsetto parts, if it were more of that I'd be down. As the album went on I started to get kind of bored though.

This funky jazz just doesn't really do it for me. Definitely better than Jamiroquai or whatever the hell that was, though.

Jizz jazzity goodness

Wel door maar net iets te soft na meerdere nummers

Decent R&B but too long and fails to be more than background music

Spotify. Fave song Ascension. Ok listen

Chill af, still good

Good sex music, nice bass.

Enjoyable. Don't see myself going back to this one though.

3/10 (Mid-90s/contemporary) R&B is not my favorite genre - it's just too downtempo for me, with nothing to draw my interest. This album is no exception. I spent the whole time just wishing it would end so I could do something else with my ears. I understand why others might find this album appealing (it's kind of sexy/groovy in its slowness, giving Motown/disco vibes), but the painfully long, dull songs make this album not for me.

It’s very smooth doin’ it music, but this type of stuff does nothing for me.

Ah, mid-90’s sexy time music… best track was the opener.

This started out as hopeful with the opening track, then got progressively slower and boring. Not a genre I typically dig, but sometimes an element or two will stand out. Just not here.

More less

This style just isn't my sort of thing unfortunately. Ended up being a bit of a drag to get through; a rare miss in a list full of hits. Despite that, I did like a couple of the tracks in particular: Dancewitme Lonely's the only company

Meh its alright fun and good bit not to die for

Very smooth neo-soul with some great tunes, but I feel like you could trim 30 seconds from almost every track and wouldn't really lose anything, even with the lush instrumentation. These types of sex jams aren't really my genre, but I can respect the craft here.

Intimate music to say the least. Listened to the 2021 remaster.

A little too smooth jazz for me.

R&B usually isn't my usual cup of tea and this album wasn't an exception. From a production standpoint, it sounds really good, especially for 1996. But I'm giving this 2 stars because I found myself actively disliking and wishing to skip many songs (I always finish each album in full so I didn't). It's just the wrong brand of cheese for me.

Ascencion (Don't Ever Wonder)

2/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/maxwell/maxwells-urban-hang-suite/ This gets a big ol’ NOT FOR ME stamp from me. Can recognize the singing quality, but it’s so hella boring. The entire album is made to fuck, but I’d just get bored.

Feels like Sade male experience… and I don’t really like it

Struggled to finish this, it just feels really repetitive and it never hits a distinct high point. Just keeps on pushing with little to say. I had to finish this in 3 separate sittings as I just felt very bored by it, and the length of the album is a big factor in that. Some parts are nice, more towards the front of the album. But nothing really stuck with me, struggling to remember anything distinct about it. Fav Track: Whenever, Wherever, Whatever

Very much not my thing. I’m sure it’s a great album if it is your thing. But not for me

If you listen to this, you definitely listen when you’re getting busy with that special someone. Not my style but I can see the talent in the music.

Only one memorable song in the bunch

2,5. Наче й не те, щоб погано, але нудно

Somehow this would be a soundtrack to making love. That used to be a thing didn't it? Can't imagine putting it on now, I think I'd just spend too much time laughing and wouldn't ever go at speeds fast enough to actually ejaculate.

This is too slick for my taste. Not really an expert in this genre, but it sounds not really outstanding in comparison to similar artist/releases.

Pleasant. Well... sedated, like smoove elevator music, or getting anesthetized at the dentist. Somewhere between a Sade quiet storm and Prince dripping with musky, horny body sweat. Swerving wide into self-parody as if these guys were in turtlenecks and gold chains and 'It's not gay if it's a 3-way" on the track list. What really went off the rails was "lock you in a room and love you for days until the cops come knocking..." Kinda rapey.

So smooth I slipped on this album and hurt my back. Not recommended.

The urban theme - 2 Welcome - 3 Sumthin' sumthin' - 3 Ascension (don't ever wonder) - 2 Dancewitme - 2 ...Till the cops come knockin' - 3 Whenever wherever whatever - 2 Lonely's the only company (i & ii) - 2 Reunion - 3 Suitelady (the proposal jam) - 3 The suite theme - 2

didnt even finish it just not for me in the slightest its literally music made to be played when support puts you on hold

The slick intro "The Urban Theme" only slightly hints at what's on the rest of this album. True, the entire album is well produced with a shiny, groovy sound. But the intro is also highlighted by a sleek saxophone. Largely, that kind of bold instrumentation isn't present elsewhere. Instead, the songs ruminate on a single sound with subtle changes. The beginning songs are a bit groovy and funky, but around "Whenever Wherever Whatever" the sound becomes much smoother. That's where the album really starts to drag; without much to separate these songs it starts to feel like an album of one long song. Maxwell's vocals are great, this clearly influenced 2010 alt R&B, and these songs would be a great background for certain activities. But for a casual listen there's just not anything new here.

Best Track - "Sumthin' Sumthin"

Started well then went rapidly downhill into generic slow R&B and therefore became a bit boring. Made it all the way through though, so couldn't have been terrible.

Favorite Tracks: The Urban Theme / Dancewitme Rating: 1.8 I listened to the Remastered 2021 versions in lossless with headphones. Album sounds great; the production is excellent and lush, huge soundstage, lots of cool little effects and touches. Solid instrumentation too, some funky slap & pop baselines, cool jazzy drums. Maxwell's voice is just aight for me, and some of these are just too cheesy (skipped ...Til the Cops after about 3 mins, and Lonely's the Only Company even faster). The back half of the album really dragged. Overall I liked the funk, less so the jams.

I'm starting to question the entire premise that there are 1001 albums I *must* hear. Still, this was better than Kanye West.

There's some good beats here but it's all kind of samey standard R&B fare. None of it came off as essential or exceptional.

Too much sex.

I started listening to this and thought how good funk sounds. The longer I listened the more I wondered if this was anything especially well done. Once I was done I gave it a relisten because I was surprised how much my enjoyment waned over the course of the listen. After the second listen I feel the same. This is alright.

Just not my thing

Nah, this is just bad and bland. Some redeeming qualities in good melodies here and there, but I really wanted just to give it 1/5

Boring

Her måtte i jobbe mye med me sjøl. Dørgende kjedelig å altfor lang! Gir me ingenting. Funker sikkert helt ok som bakgrunn i en loungebar.

Glatt og kleint. Det her skal æ aldri høre på igjen.

Helt nedpå og helt tamt. Så smooth at det er umulig å gripe tak i noe.

RnB à la Justin Timberlake, pas trop ma came

Not musically terrible but not at all up my alley either.

putting music on does not always lead to bliss don't remember this

Honestly, the reviews of this album are hilarious and I feel unable to contribute. I am not that funny. Fortunately, this album is plays too much omg yes it is 90s sex music. It makes me inherently uncomfortable lol

I feel violated, like the music has sex with me. Not my style of music at all.

Me gusta el soul pero este álbum me pareció muy aburrido, no tiene espíritu.

I really don't have anything to say. This was boring and kinda in one ear and right out the other generic R&B with a hinge of elevator music. 4/10

This sounds like the music they play on the weather channel right as they’re leading into commercial break

This is one of the most boring albums I’ve ever listened to on purpose.

I don't even remember having listened to this

This album really overstayed its welcome. Too long and nothing interesting here.

Soul, RnB, 1996 -> 2

Album 1074 of 1089 Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite - Maxwell (1996) Rating : 2.5 / 5 This one turned out to be a pretty nice late-night listen. The album has a smooth, laid-back groove that runs through the whole thing. It leans into that relaxed R&B and funk style where the music kind of flows along rather than pushing hard for attention. The overall feel is warm and easygoing. There’s a lot of groove in the rhythm section and the production keeps things smooth without feeling overly slick. It’s the kind of album that works well when you’re winding down for the evening and just want something mellow playing in the background. It’s probably not a style of music that I naturally reach for very often, but I did enjoy the listen. The musicianship is solid and the vibe of the album stays consistent from start to finish. Sometimes that’s exactly what an album like this is supposed to do - set a mood and let you settle into it.

Every song sounds exactly the same.

I understand its relevance to understand the landscape of contemporary sound. That said, not a huge fan.

This might be the most mediocre thing on the entire list. Pause screen music.

R&B that I don't care for at all. Took me forever to get through this. It's not bad, but it's pretty boring to me.

This was a chore to get through. Every song sounds the same, the music is nothing unique and there has been made better soul and r&b than this. The production is smooth saillant though. And Til the Cops Come Knockin had some redeeming qualities

Late period Marvin feel to it, but without his genius I'm afraid.

This was made to listen to on a Friday or Saturday night rather than a Tuesday morning before work.

It’s nice enough. Just washes over me without leaving any impression. Bland tbh. 2

I understand this has an audience but I just don’t want to be in it. Also some of these lyrics are all too cheesy...

This started off ok. First instrumental nice. Vocals started not bad. Then it got more and more of the type of r&b that I'm not a fan of.

Not for me, forgettable neo soul r&b slop, feel like i've heard all of these songs before but done better

rnb sexual

When I first saw this as my next album, my first thought was "oh, this is the guy that does that song 'I always feel like somebody's watching me' where Michael Jackson was the backup singer". Oops, no that was Rockwell. Ok - apparently I don't know anything about Maxwell - haha. Additional thoughts as I listened ... Sometimes I hear a little of Prince or even Marvin Gaye and Steely Dan - but with any possible rough edges completely smoothed off to where it's absolutely slippery. Maybe more like a male Sade I guess. Now reading the Wikipedia article, it looks like several of the musicians actually worked with Sade and Marvin Gaye - so that makes sense. The 2 instrumentals (first song "The Urban Theme" and last song "Til the Cops Come instrumental") are both pretty cool for background music. Ended up "liking" those 2 instrumentals as well as "Sumthin' Sumthin'" and "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)". So much of this starts sounding exactly the same after awhile. Liked songs on Spotify: 4/12 Rating: 2/5

This isn't something I need in my life.

2- Stars (4/15)
