Reviews (page 4 of 7)
No strong feelings either way
Não é meu estilo preferido de música, mas achei um bom álbum.
Smooth! But's that's because of the bucket full of sex lube applied over all surfaces.
Good soulful R&B. Liked The Jazz elements.
I loved so many of the bass lines in this album! It was definitely just sex jams lol but I enjoyed the groove!
I've enjoyed this one. It's smooth and sexy and very easy to listen to. That said, the quality of the songwriting isn't as good as other albums in this genre, so I'm not sure it's one I'll be reaching for too often.
The good: grooves and funk. Chill and reminiscent of an older generation of R&B I like. Well-produced and engineered The bad: this was like eating wagyu for the first time as a 12oz ribeye. The first few bites are shockingly good, but once you're halfway done, even though it tastes good, it's becoming too much and you wonder if you can make it to the end, and hopefully not waste any. The last few bites are are a chore and you're feeling sick at the thought of having to get through the rest. Good, but the songs are too long and there are too many of them. Shorter songs and fewer of them would have gotten this four stars. ⭐⭐⭐
sexy time
I'm not familiar with Maxwell or his urban hang suite, but I see that this album is R&B, which isn't one of my favorite genres. However, based on the user reviews that I read, it looks like this album might have been responsible for a few thousand pregnancies. I’m not sure if this album is going to land with me, but I’m curious to see what’s waiting for me. I guess it’s easier to market an album called Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite than it is to market an album called Maxwell’s Songs to Impregnate Your Lady to. I thought this album was incredibly well produced, and the fusion of soul, funk, and nineties R&B was very unique. The lyrics were sultry and seductive, but they never felt cheesy or cheap. However, as much as I enjoyed those aspects of this album, it did wear incredibly thin on me by the halfway point, as it felt like the album just recycled the same sounds and themes again until it reached its conclusion. That doesn’t take away from the solid first half of the album, but I definitely felt that past a certain point, I was just waiting for this album to end. I wrote down some thoughts I had as I went through this: I love this funky groove and the deep drums of "The Urban Theme." That little piano riff is excellent too. Oh man, and then a saxophone? Hot damn, it's getting warm in here. I dig these vocals on "Welcome." The funkiness from the first track is still present, with some percussion that's both gentle and punchy. I think I might be pregnant already. Ohhhh, those are shoes next to a bed on the album cover. It only took me until the third song to notice that. Did I mention that I've been married for five years and that I have two kids? I promise I've had sex before. These handclaps and the darker sound on "Dancewitme" are really great. The bass line is awesome, and the keyboards are great too. I really love how this song's sound develops and evolves over the course of its runtime. I just learned about Maxwell today, but I'm pretty sure he could impregnate someone just by dancing with them. A vibraslap on "...Til the Cops Come Knockin'?" I love it. Those keyboard riffs are excellent too. The bass doesn't feel as prominent on this song, but it still does a great job of steering the sound. Ironically, after the cops come knockin, this album goes a bit stale. The production is still fantastic, and the music is smooth, but man, it's just missionary position again. Flip me over or something, Maxwell! Okay, I dig this shimmering sound of "Reunion." Well, that’s about the only thing I dig about this song. It feels like another re-hashing of what I’ve already heard. As far as nineties R&B is concerned, this is a pretty decent album. Would I ever listen to this again? Probably not, but I’d consider jokingly throwing on one of these songs while doing a goofily seductive dance for my wife.
Smooooooooth
This album started really strong; first half was really good - nice grooves, chill vibe, sexy. Second half lost me - I ended up skipping several of the songs. Vocals became grating and the vibe seemed to change; seems I'm not the only one who feels similarly - the play counts drop way off after track 7. (3)
Franchement chiant mais un peu swag
c'est comme ça qu'on fait de la musique de gooneur (je l'ai pas fini et alors ? c'est ce qu'elles me disent toutes)
This was fine I guess, I'll give it a 3. New to me.
Good r&b not really my thing though
Freaky music.
Starts out lightly funky, then gets more soft jazzy R&B
Maxwell. Dad to many, Daddy to all. Who knew porn could sound this good. Fave tracks: - The Urban Theme - Welcome - Ascension - Dancewitme - Whenever Wherever Whatever
this thing’s smooth like butter. i’ve seen a few reviews calling this “boring” but lets be real, the purpose of an album like this isn’t to listen to it intently… it’s background music for something else… jokes aside, this album is solid, and manages to blend soul, jazz, funk, and even a bit of hip-hop together quite seamlessly. i’d definitely need to be in a certain mood to listen to this again, but overall, i liked this quite a bit.
That is fine as background music but incredibly cheesy if you actually focus on what he's banging on about..
All I remember about this guy is when he made a video where he’s basically standing there shirtless and girls were going horny over it. Flash forward to the last time I saw him and he was tubby. Like husky. Big boned. Fat. At least I think it’s the same guy… This is sort of Michael Jackson sounding slow jams. It works. I’ll give him that.
Yeah I liked this
Funky guitar chill album I vibe with it
6/10… r&b / neo soul / *1996
Relaxing armchair music Fave track: Ascension (don't ever wonder)
Smooth. 3.5/5
Groovy. Sexy. Maxwell never lived up to hype as “the next Prince” and you could probably deconstruct his sound to be derivative of other artists, but this is a good album for smooth sexytime jazz underscored by electronic beats.
I don't think I'm smooth enough for these grooves
I don't know this genre well, but I was surprised at how many songs I recognized. I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could.
It was good. Didn't quite grab me.
forgettably pleasant
Oh Maxwell, your bland, bland honey doesn’t set these panties on fire. The album starts off alright, a smooth and pleasant lull, and meanders into dullness. A low 3
I remember the name Maxwell but was not into R&B at all when he burst onto the scene. And until reading the Wikipedia entry, I was not aware that "quiet storm" was a genre. Found myself enjoying the repeating guitar outro in "Welcome" and went to look up who played it. Ah yes, of course! Wah Wah Watson! (lol) I Googled and find it hard to believe that Maxwell was never on an episode of Beverly Hills 90210. This really seems like Peach Pit After Dark music. But he apparently went straight from this album to MTV Unplugged, so I guess he skipped the 90210 step. I liked this but as I have noticed with a lot of the albums in this project, I got tired of it about halfway through. I wonder how much this is caused by how we typically consume music these days, not listening to entire albums anymore. (Theoretically this project should mitigate this effect, since I am listening to at least one album all the way through every Monday through Friday.)
I don’t know. I don’t like it or dislike it
Not really my thing, but OK
This rules wow, 3.5 minimum
I listened until completion
This is porn music. Not bad though
just some good old fashioned booty music…
I liked it for a bit but then it just got too redundant. Small doses for this kind of stuff for me.
Started out thinking this would be my jam but it became quite gooey in the middle and I lost a little interest (particularly Lonely's the only company). I think I just wanted it to be a bit edgier with a bit more D'Angelo mixed in... but maybe I'll come back to it? First instrumental track is strong, and until the mid-way felt like it had more Stevie Wonder inspiration.
no the album i would listen to but its ok
Good record, super smooth and really enjoyable throughout
Kunne jeg meget godt lige. Gode lyde
That's a tough one... Started off really well, could be a 4 but became boring at some point. Nice album though, i guess. I liked that one review about the whole reality becoming smooth.🏳️⚧️and here's a trans flag because I prefer burgers with chicken instead of beef.
smooth and sexy, not really my cup of tea
Jaa-a. Tempo on alhaalla ja rytmit vievät romanttiselle illalliselle ITSESI kanssa. Näin smoothia RnB:tä saa hakea.
Vibey but not too much my thing
Well. This was a thing. It's certainly smooth as butter, but, eating so much butter can't be good for your health.
This album was fun to listen to, it’s not my usual taste and I probably won’t be listening to it again as it’s really not my style but it wasn’t the worst thing in the world
Horny/10
SLIGHTLY too smooth for me, but well produced, I do like the vocals, and it is a nice listen.
Good but non really my genre.
sure, that didn't annoy me much while working.
Hard to give it anythings else, just a whole BGM-album
Again, not my typical listen, but I really liked the vibe. I could definitely listen to this and will check out some more of his stuff. My big takeaway which I've noticed in other very soul-oriented music is that the vocals are excellent, but the hooks are not terribly strong. I did not leave this album remembering any of the music.
Nice
Background music
This was surprisingly chill.
I liked the groove and style, though to be honest, all of the songs pretty much sounded the same. There was an interesting shift at "Whenever Wherever Whatever" where the songs became a little more tender. I certainly felt like I was in a club (or Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, if you will) while listening to this music. Honestly, I could quite literally feel the smoothness/slipperiness of this song, which was a little off putting at times. I think you really have to really get into this particular groove and style to get into this music.
I, a 43 year old man, listened to the whole thing and am now pregnant.
Real smooth r&b. Pretty good, kind of lost interest after a while, but still was a good listen. 3/5 Might listen again
This isn't exactly a new take, but wow this is smooth, and so sensual it's *almost* funny. But consistent songcraft and quality performances keep this ball of sex and grooves from falling apart. And the result is great, check out ...Til The Cops Come Knocking, it exemplifies everything this album succeeds at. My only real complaint is that it's a little long winded for what it is, but there aren't really any songs that are a total failure, so I'd really need to think about what would have to be cut. While I'm complaining, I must also say that, as a lesbian, the sex appeal of Maxwell is somewhat wasted on me, but that's not his fault. Plus, even if it isn't necessarily for me, the atmosphere here is kind of transcendent. This is really solid stuff, while listening to this I kind of learned that Maxwell seems sort of overshadowed by D'angelo, and from this album I couldn't quite figure out why. And, while I learned it's because Maxwell's career consistency isn't quite there, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite stands strongly on its own as a self-contained statement.
If I didn’t know that this album was from 1996 then the opening track here would convince me that this was a lost soul classic from the early 70s. It’s a great beginning, but the rest of the album doesn’t quite live up to it, being self produced smooth, jazzy soul with the occasional cringy lyric - I’m not entirely sure that promising to keep someone in a locked room having sex with them for days until the police come knocking is quite as romantic as Maxwell seems to think!
Pretty much elevator music, even if it's still has some charm
An album of songs about having sex doesn’t tonally work as well at 5:30am at my job.
Nice and relaxing. Not really my taste but would happily have it on in the background
3.0 - Ok
Actually this wasn't bad, and to be honest I'm sure I heard several bits that Digital Underground had sampled. On the whole though it was ok, worth a 3.
Smooth. Maybe so smooth that the songs aren’t even memorable. Yikes! Great voice, of course. Think what he could’ve done with some actual songs.
Cool tunes
hot and sexy
Have to agree with other reviews, it was almost too smooth, the music slid right off of me
🦎
Very smooth. Too smooth for my taste
Some good sexy jams but not my jam
Ok for background
album swag e molto smooth, ambienta bene
A lot of this album delivers some fun, sensual funk. The first five opening tracks that are the clear highlights. But when it leans more into straight R&B/soul, it misses the mark for me. Still, the funkier moments make it worth a listen.
Sounds like the kind of music you’d have sex to in a RadioShack back in the 90s.
ну вот вроде неплохой грув, но почему то не цепляет
This couldnt be further away from my usual listening, but it skipped my withput any offence and i even found myself taoping along occasionally
Shouldn't have listened to this at work, it made everyone feel too sexy.
Now this is what I call eaaaassssyyyyy listening
Yeah kinda cool for sure
I remember liking this a lot when it came out. It doesn’t really stand out now.
Very chill. Went straight into my daily playlist. Unfortunately, it also didn't push the medium, and if I didn't personally have a taste for this style of music, I would probably consider it pedestrian and forgettable.
Funky, smooth and beautiful
So...it could be like background music at some point, but the first grooves are nice and make you swing your hips.
- Starts out good but by the end I found myself, once again, asking why I needed to hear the record. .... and it's probably context; release date, album is credited with bringing back soul to the forefront, with starting the neo-soul thing ...... but, taken on it's own merits, it just doesn't hold up. Yeah, it's smooth, it's even funky, but it's also boring. Was I listening to some kind of BarryWhiteSoulTrance? Afterwards I was really trying to think of one track that stuck with me. Nope, not a one. Perfectly competent, even skilled considering he did it all, basically but .... boring. Can't go more than 3 and it's a weak 3 based completely on the craftsmanship.
Not too bad, but it is very samey.
Definitely a groove to this, at least for roughly the first half of the album. Then it gets a little elevator music-ish starting with Whenever, Wherever, Whatever--a vibe that continues through Lonely's the Only Company. Reading up on this album, they compare this to Erykah Badu, Lauren Hill and D'Angelo. But Badu kills this by a long shot, as does the part of Lauren Hill considered neo soul rather than rap. 3/5
I think this album got me pregnant. This is an album that defines a romantic evening with your partner. It fits more in the late 70's, and I'm shocked dude made it in the mid 90's. We had our fair share of 90's booty music, don't get me wrong, but the music FEELS 70's soul to me. Good album.
Obviously a classic album that is great for what it is. Total baby-making music here. Not for me but I recognize the talent.
Descent jazz bits at the beginning. Liked it less as it went on.
Very smooth neo soul which sounds quite like a 70s album but with better production. A good listen for a chill late night, though a bit too background music as the songs sound very similar. It's also around 15 minutes too long.
It was good, but it would have benefitted from being about 20 min shorter
smooth arrangements
I gave this multiple listens but, as pleasant as it is, there just wasn't much to it. "Till the cops come knocking" is a standout, and has a really gorgeous groove, but the rest is just a bit lightweight. Makes a nice difference from the 70s rock, but doesn't come close to Prince or anyone else in the genre. A low 3, because it's not *bad*, just a bit fluffy
Perhaps the sexiest album on this list. Plenty of soul and R&B influences from yesteryear too, which mostly makes for an easy listen. Yes, it's sensual, but most 70s/80s soul/R&B artists were the exact same. This is supposedly a concept album, but I didn't quite follow that here.
5/10
Music to make love to.
It’s good, I enjoy the musical parts of it. It’s too horny for me, and goes on a bit too long. 3 of 5
Good for what it is, but too smooth for me to actively listen to for long. “Til the Cops Come Knocking” is a jam, though.
#672. This is the kind of music that's in the ads on Pornhub. 3/5: fine
A smooth, slick sounding R & B, Soul, Jazz album that is easy to listen to, but begins to sound samey and generic after a while. I enjoyed the opening track, but once the vocals kicked in, I may as well as listened to a Sade record. This isn't a bad thing, Sade is okay, but okay isn't essential enough for me for repeated listens.
At the start of this album, I was enjoying the silky smoothness and funky grooves, but after an hour of listening to essentially the same song, I grew weary of the smooth sameness.
Ascension got my butt movin. The slow songs are pretty cheesy. Also every song is too long. Pretty mid overall. Couple goodies though.
Sure this is fine, but I really don't care about it at all.
the definitive soundtrack for dimly lit hotels with neon signs down an empty street.
This album is so smooth and jazzy, with just a touch of boom bap. Maxwell is a great vocalist and one of the best examples of mid-90s sexytimes R&B. 3.5⭐️
It's fairly smooth but seems meandering. Is it okay to say it's like a male version of Sade?
Fun soul album. Not my usual sound, but I dug it.
Pure baby making music. It’s so good it’s practically a parody of itself. THREE STARS
Groovy nineties chill funk/baby making playlist material
Listened to this while playing Through Ice and Snow. I lost again. This wasn't bad...but it also didn't strike me as some crazy special or important. Don't get me wrong...I was bopping to the songs...but it just didn't leave me with much. Also...I am pretty certain he's singing "Til the cows come knockin." I was more than halfway through the song before I looked up, saw the song title, and had a good laugh.
Smooth, men jeg ville forvente at støde på Erykah Badu eller D’Angelo før Maxwell på den her liste
Smooth production, horny vibes, I guess it's a good R&B album
Pretty smooth
I put this album on every 6 months when my wife lets me have sex with her.
2.6
Smoooooooth as hell, but unremarkable.
I guess the word for this album is smooth. I did feel oddly hit on? I don't really know how else to explain it.
This was veey funky, at times too sensual bit a cool listen. Fun grooves, I liked it.
Smooth, consistent, not really changing my world... Pleasant to listen to but nothing I'm going to keep around or like, really remember
58 minutes of sex music. My wife quite liked it. 3 stars.
I didn’t know anything about this album, and I wasn’t optimistic. The first track made me surprisingly nostalgic/sad, even though it’s really nothing special. Not sure why it hit like that. Once the vocals kicked in in the second track, the rest of the album was more mediocre. It really feels evocative of those “lo-fi hiphop beats” YouTube playlists, which kind of sums the whole thing up - decent background music, but is it really the sort of thing you can easily enjoy on its own merit? While I didn’t dislike it, it’s hard to justify its inclusion on this list. If you don’t hear this before you die, don’t feel like you missed out on too much.
I like the sound. There are no standout tracks for me
Never heard of this guy and it was a nice discovery. Very smooth and groovy R&B - the bass lines especially are a real stand-out here, it's hard not to nod along with. The vocals are seductive and create a nice vibe. I found the second half a little less engaging so capped at 3*
Few I recognised and I can see the influence for the likes of D’angelo and Badu. Nice listen but is it groundbreaking?
Baby making jams. This is a vibe. Til the cops come in feels borderline problematic?
Giving this 3.5. It’s very 90’s r&b. Sounds like a lot of those guys from back then. Nothing outstanding.
Forgettable.
Had low expectations going into this album I’ve never heard of, but I’m pleasantly surprised. Side eyeing the song … Til the Cops Come Knocking, though.
Very well done and soulful just didn’t have enough different sounds. Could have been all one song
I don't know for sure but it sounds like they recorded and pressed to vinyl and then record them playing the album on vinyl which I'm a fan of. It gives it some warm texture. Well I was more stoked on this record before the singing came in. I was thinking it was going to be a nice chill groovy jazz record but the singing is making it a bit cheesy and now I just want to go listen to Yussef Dayes. 4.5/5 instrumentation, 2/5 vocals, and too long.
What I really like about neo soul is that its full of really cool musicality. Its really rich and full. It has some psych, funk, jazz, and r&b to it. Often when I hear the intro track, bridge or when they kind of jam it out, I get really into it. But... like a lot of genre music (disco, funk, 80s pop) it starts to sound like a specific time and doesn't age super well. Its hard to listen without it feeling kind of cheesy. Its a mix of the vocals and percussion. The percussion especially feels very 90s and its hard to move past that. Weird production in the 90s. Overall, I enjoyed this, but its not something I gravitate to very often. Also, 1 hour is too long!
Smooth jazz Muzak...
Very smooth Standout songs: Ascension Dancewitme
Not bad
Just spent the last week chilling in the Greek islands, it’s Sunday morning and nothing needs to be happening, and this sounds ok. Can’t think of any other times it could or would. It’s so smooth it has no edges whatsoever, it offers no resistance in the physical world, and that’s impossible to manage . Think will have that 1 listen and say goodbye as it just won’t work out between us again I fear. 3 Star
Interesting, not my style though
01) The Urban Theme - 7,0 02) Welcome - 7,0 03) Sumthin' Sumthin' - 7,5 04) Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder) - 7,5 05) Dancewitme - 7,0 06) ...Til the Cops Come Knockin' - 7,5 07) Whenever Wherever Whatever - 6,5 08) Lonely's the Only Company (I & II) - 6,5 09) Reunion - 6,5 10) Suitelady (The Proposal Jam) - 7,0 11) The Suite Theme - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,00 (70/100) Current ranking: 346/565
When I heard the first song, Urban Theme, it reminded me of the jazzy bit before Mix Master Mike section on the Beastie Boys Check Your Head. Sumethin’ Sumethin’ was a vibe with some great bass work. The Dancewitme was a bit of Nile Rodger’s disco funk with some D'Angelo swagger. Suitelady was sexy good. I don’t know if I would look for this outside of throwing it on at a swank party (yep, every dreamable weekend) because it reminds me I’ve been married for a long time and spend my evenings alone writing music reviews rather than living this soundtrack, but it was pretty damn smooth and digable.
Random thoughts: * This was better than I expected coming in. * I knew of Maxwell but never really knew his songs. Maybe if I listened to Maxwell more I would have had more luck with the ladies. * This was some good slow jams music. * I'll throw this one on to get in the right "mood".
If you are need of some funky R&B sexy time music, this one should get the job done. It peters out near the end, but you’ll probably be asleep by then.
2.9 - Meh, forgettable
Weird one. Some kinda nice songs, but production feels super artificial and pristine, kinda off-putting. It doesnt sound bad but just kinda tacky. 3/5
This is something I put on when I want something pleasant to listen to that isn’t too musically challenging. I do like his voice.
This album is so smooth it had me sliding around my apartment in my socks. The bass is NASTY. Highlights were Welcome, Ascension, …Til The Cops Come Knockin’, and Reunion.
I think he’s having sex in this suite.
Another Fuck Jams album, this time with funky guitar and worse songs. It wasn't bad, but I got the bit halfway through and it really started to drag. Also, "Til the Cops Come Knocking" may be an eighth as sexy as he thinks it is, if that.
This was such a palatable concept album about love and sex. I enjoy the funk inserted into the album and was hoping for a bit more. However, I like the lovey dovey journey we as listeners went on.
Sure, ok. I feel like I can hear this album‘s influence on other later R&B records.
The smoothest of smooth R&B and a full albums of tracks to smash to. Overlong in parts, but the highs are truly outstanding.
Smooth, although without really any memorable moments. It's still good enough to keep in rotation though.
Smooth funky soul pop that's well produced and well sung but it's not really my bag either
Enjoyable cool summery vibes.
A smooth listen, perhaps not up my alley but a good sounding record
Nice album no standout but flows nicely will definitely listen again
I know it's intentional, but the tracks kind of all just blended together for me and I ended up being a bit bored and forgetting to listen Standouts - 3/5
26/04/2025 It was harmless, but it wasn't for me.
Now here's another artist / album that jave never heard of. This could be fun... And, .... it was so-so. Pretty generic soft Soul-Funk-Jazz-Easy Listening. Not offensive, not memorable, not really anything. One listen and done.
Pretty sexy. Not my thing but I totally get why this is on this list. Super well made. And super smooth.
background music, jazzy, synth-base like daft punk
Excellent but not exceptional.
At it's heart, it's a bedroom album. A well written, produced and performed album, but not really my taste. I would have loved for the band to stretch out a bit and go a little heavier into the funk, but every song is just kind of mellow.
1st half is really good. 2nd half is eh. 3.5
The History of Soul Music: Ray Charles: I can be fun and smooth at the same time! Stevie Wonder: I can be furious and smooth at the same time! Maxwell: I can be smooth and smooth at the same time! Seriously, there's such a thing as too smooth. I knew I'd one day get a mid Soul album, but it's still sad that Soul will be dethroned as my top genre. It's ok though. I'll get another Michael Jackson or one by The Temptations and it'll cancel out. Favorite Track: ...Til the Cops Come Knockin'
Smooth r&b
Smyoooooth Myoooosic. Super derivative and drags on close listen (particularly the second half), but a cool groovy background listen with very high recording quality, excellent musicianship, and Maxwell has a great voice. Favorite tracks: Sumthin' Sumthin' (big phat phunky bass), Ascension (good groove), Dancewitme (great bass and guitar groove).
Not my style, but I suppose it’s pretty good for what it is. After a while it got old, though. An hour of this is too much, especially when some songs are largely instrumental and the vocal part is basically “woooooaaaahh.” Or some other such. Would be better as just an instrumental piece.
Really groovy music. Would listen while playing a board game with friends.
Day 18: Like the Groove!!! 3/5 #Musicsky #albumsky
5/10 slipped my mind... 4-2-2025
3.5 stars. Neo soul/R&B album that replaces hip-hop with more soul and funk which is a sound I much prefer. Lots of crooning and romantically-saturated lyrics paired with sensual beats makes it a make-out soundtrack.
so smooth that there was nothing to it. not offensive but just... nothing memorable about it.
Fun
Not my cuppa but a decent record
3 stars
Discount MJ vibes. Real smooth real mid
It's fine. He has a good voice and the songs are written and arranged really well, but it sounds like a lot of other stuff.
Quite cool, loungy and elegant. Reminds me of Jamiroquai. Somewhat artificial and polished. Nothing I care much about, but well done.
I suspect that this is probably very good, but it is not my thing.
Tasty tunes, great bass, sexy production.
Not my type of music, but it’s great for what it is
Smooth…. So smooth you take it for granted but I’m sure there is a lot of musicianship going on….
Favorite Track: Ascension
Decent R&B, but not fully my jam.
Never heard of Maxwell, but this was incredibly smooth. I don't know that I would listen again, but it was enjoyable background music.
I had not previously heard this artist or album so I had no idea what to expect, but this album is a welcome change from most others on this list. It's a pretty nice R&B album. There were some parts that got a little repetitive, but overall I enjoyed it. I could see coming back to this one.
If you could turn a Womanizer into a record, this is what it would sound like.
Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite is often hailed as a groundbreaking R&B album that brought a fresh sound and artistic depth to the genre. However, despite its innovative production and smooth melodies, it can be argued that the album doesn't possess the same level of excitement as its reputation suggests. While tracks like "Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder)" showcase Maxwell's unique vocal style and lyrical introspection, the overall pace and vibe of the album may leave some listeners craving more energy and engagement, making it a subdued experience rather than a thrilling one.
Songs i knew 0 Songs i like: lost of them (if I was in a lift) File this under "music I'd like to goose to while in a lift". Good not great, high 3.
On par with the Beatles
Smooth as silk, sweet like honey, seductive like, eh... well, you get the point.
3 sterne
Groovy tune, creepy sex vibes
The strong start provided by the first three tracks gives way to some overly smooth and repetitious stuff. Stand out track for me is The Urban Theme.
Favorite Track: Whenever Wherever Whatever
Decent album but reminds me of elevator music really. Light and easy to listen to but nothing I'm in a rush to listen to again.
Spicy, to say the least
In general kind of boring, “till the cops come knocking” really has not aged well on a couple of fronts. A song about locking a woman up? This seems like it was questionable even in the mid 90s.
It starts jazzy and funky and develops into something else (RNB?). The second half is too smooth for me.
Well produced, but unless you are into panty dropping music or in the mood to get it on, it’s hard to take the overall album too seriously.
Loved the first song and enjoyed the next couple but lost interest by the end
Not bad, not good.
Nice but a little mellow for my taste.
A little surprised I already have this whole album saved in my Spotify account. I thi k it's from when I first signed on and treated like building a collection of CDs or something. Having listened to it, I can see I probably just enjoyed the sound of it but didn't really listen to it as an album, because wow, it drags. It never sounds bad, but it just drags on and on and on and on.
Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite stands as a testament to 90's R&B production superiority. The record just sounds *cool*.
Vibey, chill romantic
An alright album, no real standouts.
Glad I listened to this, but it's not for me. Every song sounded about the same so I couldn't really get into it. About as smooth as it gets though.
I'm a man and I think I'm pregnant after listening to this
Not bad music at all, but just doesn’t get me excited. After 3 or 4 songs they all start sounding the same to me. However, great recording quality especially the bass and drums.
Not my jam, but great neo soul
Started out really nicely! Enjoyed the first half of the album through Till the Coos come knocking. Then I had to fast forward through the last six songs! Only so much sappiness I can take.
I'm not really supposed to talk about the lawsuit, but this guy stole my hairdo and we settled out of court. Ok so I'm going along with a lot of the other reviews that I've read, and agreeing that this gets to be kind of bland song after song. Not much variation. But I will give it a three because I do think that it still sounds legitimately current. I would have never guessed this was released in 1996.
Decent r&b
Goodness gracious this is smooth. Smooth as satin. As silk, even. It does all blend together a bit, but it's too good across the board for me to dislike it. Favorite: Whenever Wherever Whatever
At the start I was really feeling kind of the funk/juazz/R&B at work, but after 30 minutes I was ready to move on. Very fun but didn't need all of it
This music is to intelligent for me, hahah
I guess is an good album but not my style
Who? 1990's R&B/Soul from an American R&B singer-songwriter that I've never heard of. Quite pleasant, almost disappears into the background, nothing special.
It don't push all the right buttons for me but it was still a nice listen. Towards the end of it I couldn't tell which song was which because they all sounded the damn same, had me snoozing at certain parts. Top 3 Favorites: Sumthin' Sumthin', Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder), and Whenever Wherever Whatever Whole lotta mid towards the second half of the album 2.50-3.00/5
It's smooth and got some groove, but doesn't fully tickle my fancy. Good music, though. 3.25
Fun 90's R&B
Enjoyable 3*
Beautiful voice and cool rhythms, especially the bass. But the lyrics are a bit too sappy for me.
I am really baffled by some of these super negative reviews. For what it is, a smooth rnb album, it is really good. Maxwell has a great silky voice, the bass is funky and goes crazy (especially on the first half), there's plenty of small musical things going on in the background to keep in interesting even if the tracks are long and the overall vibe is perfect to put it on in the background. Still, I have to admit, it tends to drag by the end of the album and it would really benefit from trimming approx. 15 minutes, that would make it a really great album. 3/5
I was grooving but then it all started to sound the same
The jams so sultry Jazzy, smooth as butter, soul For you to unwind
Started reasonably alright but soon became repetitive and so completely lost my attention.
some of the funkier stuff was okay, the instrumental jazz was okay, the r&b and slower stuff isn't my thing. i think i hate r&b 2.5
Chillin R&B vibes from the mid 90's. Felt like good atmospheric chillin
A smooth, sultry vibe drifts across each track, like a soft blend of D'Angelo’s rich tones and Sade’s moody intimacy. The beats are mellow, rhythms slow but textured, creating a warm, inviting space. It’s an album meant for dim lights and quiet moments. Vocals stay calm, restrained, letting the music breathe. There’s a sophistication here, a kind of timeless charm, yet it feels contained, never pushing boundaries.
Soul lentillo. Ni fu ni fa.
Grew on me
'Whenever Wherever Whatever' was my favorite track. The album was fine otherwise, but didn't quite resonate with me.
Medium Musik
Smoooooth
I can only describe this as smooth. Stand-out: Lonely's the Only Company
Man, I am so happy that someone like this guy is on the list and not Chris Brown. Fuck Chris Brown. Me and my homies hate Chris Brown. Anyways, this album's good. I wouldn't say I love it, but it is a solid modern r&b album. I've never mentioned this before, but contemporary r&b is kind of what I was raised on, and by that, I mean that's what my parents listened to for a large part of my childhood. So I'm sure my parents have engaged in some Maxwell action before. I probably shouldn't phrase it that way. Let's actually talk about the album. This is somewhat of a concept album, which is something that always interests me. The album has a heavy focus on adult romance. That's it? I mean, I'm fine with an album having seductive writing. I mean I gave Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On a 4! However, I feel like that's kind of the focus of contemporary r&b as a whole, which makes this album not feel like a concept album as much. But, another way to think of this is by looking at the release year. This was long before this style of music really hit it big, so this album plus a few others helped form the foundations of the genre. That gives this album value. The album also has value because it's good. I like Maxwell's singing. It fits the vibes very well. The writing is a bit repetitive, but certainly isn't bad. It gets the job done. The sound is pleasant and similarly arousing. The album's good, but it's nothing too special in my eyes. Still, I see the appeal. High 3/5.
Absolutely loved the first song which was instrumental... The rest of the tunes might be a liiiittle bit too much on the "smooth jazz" side for me, but they're definitely solid. Reminds me a lot of D'Angelo. I think overall it's a little bit too "I love you baby I need you in my life" for me.
These jams sure are slow
I really dig this album. I struggled to decide whether this was a 3 or 4. It's silky smooth, and honestly would work well as background music at a party, music to set the intimate mood, or just a vibe for the day. I think what ultimately pushed it to a 3 while the album is so diverse, i think the back half doesn't have as much luster as the front half. definitely want to have this in the rotation going forward, but don't have the heart to give it 4 stars
I mean ya this is technically pretty good. Especially in a time before lofi beats. But this brings up a larger problem that if something like this is on this list and I don’t get any 90s country (Shania Twain, Tim McGraw, Brad paisley, Garth brooks were all massive at this time) I will be irate.
Added to the slaying sloots playlist. Really though I liked this more than I thought I would. I wasn’t blown away, but it was pleasant.
“Sounds like Justin Timberlake if he was good.” - My brother. This is some straight up baby-making music. So smooth, so funky, and the lyrics leave nothing to the imagination. It’s really good, just has a bit too much length. A couple songs will be added to the library but that’s about it. I thought the instrumental tracks were better than most of those with lyrics.
The whole album was just like a smooth conversation. Easy to listen to with the perfect amount of soul.
Maxwell playing a Little Caesars Arena next Friday night in Detroit, but me and Mindy will be at the Jesus and Mary Chain show at the Masonic Temple. Maybe we'll have to hit the after show party. Ha. We follow up Bad Brains with a bump and grind, soulful, love me up album. OK! More my genre anyway. I'm not sure my wife will appreciate it though. I've already been counting the hours until I can get out of here to see her and then you go and have me listen to this? Look out girl, I'll be home soon!! I really enjoy me some R&B. I can't say this is anything better than Silk, Jodeci, Keith Sweat and the likes, but damn, it gets you moving in your seat and thinking of your girl, no doubt. Some solid tunes and he has a beautiful voice. If you are an of this genre, I'm sure you enjoyed the listen and can't wait to find the one you love. As Prince would say (Sign of the Times album) It's gonna be a beautiful night! Pretty good way to end the week and start the weekend. 3.5
3 Really thought this was going to be some sort of sequel to Maxwell’s Silver Hammer at first. Thank God this is not that. Anyway, I kind of struggled with my review on this one. Is it groovy and smooth as all hell? Yes, yes it is. Does it feel like anything groundbreaking or that I haven’t heard before? No, no it does not. I’m not going to pretend like I’m any kind of expert on R&B, but I feel like the general sound of this album had already been done plenty by artists in years prior, such as R. Kelly, D’Angelo, Jodeci, Keith Sweat, hell, some of this stuff even sounds like Michael Jackson who was doing this kind of thing well over a decade prior. Granted, the real question should probably be if Maxwell does it better than those guys… and my answer to that is, maybe? Once again, I like the groove to this, but I couldn’t point to any one moment that I think elevates this album above anything else I’ve heard from the genre. I suppose the production is pretty solid and doesn’t sound as “90s” as it certainly could, but that’s not really quite enough to sell me on it. Call me a prude, but the fact your music is good for getting it on is not does not automatically make it an interesting or magical listen. Besides, I don’t think anyone has gone out of their way to put on an album for lovemaking probably since this came out in 1996.
Solid, soulful, mid-90s R&B. Sure the production errs towards some of the trappings of overpolish and glam of the 90s, but there is a lot more to like here than not. Album gets underway with an funky instrumental hop, complete with sex guitar, plenty of wah, and horns (prominently sax). Welcome dumps some of the forward driving energy in favor of a laid-back soulful, funky jam. Here is where we first hear Maxwell's clear and capable vocals. Love the the funky "wah" tone on the guitar. Has a nice confident groove about it that is easy to sink back into. ...Til the Cops Come Knockin' is kind of dirty. Honestly not sure how I feel about the chorus -- like why are you locking her up somewhere until the cops come knocking? I don't think its intended to be rapey, but its sending off some rapey vibes. Whenever Wherever Whatever gives me Extreme More Than Words vibes. Not a bad thing, but a departure from the rest so far. Really dig the atmosphere on The Suite Theme. Deep 808s laying the foundation for some soulful sax and piano. Sure it pushes the 90s R&B cheese factor, but I actually enjoy it here. For what it is, this is very enjoyable. I enjoyed the funk-forwardness of many of the songs and Maxwell's singing is great throughout. Some of the songs bleed together thematically and I feel like this would be a stronger album if a few tracks were shed. I'd say this is a high 3 verging on low 4 for me.
This is like the exact opposite of Orbital 2. I get sucked in immediately, and then settled in for the ride. Another great fall morning walk album. Sumthin' Sumthin' has an especially thumping baseline that I love. Probably the highlight of the album. Don't care for the breathy, falsetto singing. Reminds me of Mariah Carey. I think ultimately this one started out hot, but went a little too long. I started to get a bit bored. The Suite Theme was nice and chill. I had high hopes for this one at the beginning, but it lost me along the way. High 3.
The groove and funk was hittin' me nicely in the beginning but really wish the album wasn't an hour long. Something about a grown man whispering in my ear while some smooth yazz plays in the background just gives me the heebie-jeebies.
Nice to get some R&B as opposed to yet another rock album. Ultimately I found this kind of boring and some of the songs were too long, but again, some R&B was appreciated.
Only 3 good songs, the rest sucks
Smooooooooooooooooooooooooooooth
Приличный нео-сол. Всё на месте. Лучшая песня - ...Til the Cops Come Knockin'.
jazz isn't really my thing, but it was a good album.
Listened Before? N Awwww yeah... sex music. Lets not pretend it's anything else, okay? It's fine for what it is.. kinda dated but smooth and buttery for banging your wife. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Ascension
3 out of 5
Some super smooth easy listening here, if you're into that kind of thing.
Meh.
This isn’t exactly my go-to genre, but if more contemporary soul and R&B were like this, I’d definitely enjoy it more. The newer, more aggressive R&B often loses the essence of what soul and R&B were originally about. That said, this album is incredibly laid-back, smooth, and lush, with a sensual atmosphere and polished, glossy production.
Rating: 6/10 Mostly very meh R&B, had some very good songs on here though. Choice cuts: The Urban Theme, Ascension, Lonely's the Only Company
Makeout album
Some sultry and smokey cool jazz grooves that would make perfect background music for an intimate dinner party of two...
This kind of music has a very strong music school vibe to me. Very well done, but not very original. This is basically a remake of Luther Vandross and Barry White etc. with updated production (which is very good by the way). Especially the voice lacks character. The start is alright, but towards the middle it became too smooth for me and it only got worse later on. Favorite song: Ascension.
Smooth listen, enjoyed it
Fine
Went over a speed bump whilst listening to this and now I’m 7 months pregnant
Not my jam, great beats though
I liked it!
An easy listen but also somehow ruthlessly sexual. Overall left very little impression on me
Smooth, soft soul/r&b. Quite pleasant as background music, but nothing to make me sit up and listen.
smooth but uninspiring
On my album journey I've grown very accustom to something that once was a killer to my Gen Z, short attention span brain: long songs. Often times now, I get excited when I see a long song because I know the artist often poured more of their soul into that track than any other song on the album. Even better if the whole album is ten minute-plus tracks, as then I know I'm about to go on a trip. However, there is still one variation of the long song-riddled album. An album with the average twelve-or-so songs, all in the five-to-six minute range. I hate that kind of album, every song feels it drags on to long, and ruins the general good will I had towards the song at the start, and I fall into its trap every time. 90s R&B is a good example of this, as the baby-making nature of all of these songs leads to a lot of tasty, sexy jams that become tired with time, not helped by the fact that each song is generally the same sonically. You'll be relaxed, sure, but perhaps too relaxed, to the point where the difference between track five and track nine is non-existent in your memory. This album is no different. I really want to like it more, and there are moments of something great all throughout, but at an hour long I was just not in a mood worth caring by the end, and it really knocked the album down for me. Each song was so close that I could taste it, but as it went into the four-minute mark and always seemed to be at a perfect stopping point it instead went "Nah, time for some more slow jams!" and I was exhausted. It's good, instrumentation is great, Maxwell's voice is stellar, and the vibes are immaculate, but I don't know if I could sit through one of these songs again anytime soon, let alone a whole album.
a huge dork's idea of the kind of music you'd put on for sex
Tolle Stimme mit Soul. Anfangs sehr gut. Im Laufe des Albums wird's etwas gleichtönig.
I didn't care this too much. It wasn't unpleasant, but it wasn't engaging either.
Another Meh.
Totally fine, but that's it. Good background music.
Smooth as hell, which was very enjoyable for the first few songs. But after a bunch of songs, the enjoyment wore down.
Respect the talent. I’m just not a smooth R & B girl
Never heard of them, and liked it at first. Nice loungy, breezy, smooth tunes. But then got a bit boring. Ok for background chill music.
its a good one

Very nice chill, jazzy album, a relaxing listen. Not a genre I’m well versed in, but I definitely enjoyed this one.
Quite a hit-or-miss typa album in my opinion. About half the tracks don't do really anything for me, but the other half just have something small (e.g. a baseline or guitar plucks or something) that totally transform the sound into something really good. 6/10
i can only ever wish to be this smooth 2.8/5
Id never heard of this artist or album. Wouldn't listen again but it was good for what it was.
svona sálarskot rogb. góð bít inn á milli. en gerir lítið fyrir mig.
It was cool! Smooth and funky straightforwared R&B
I actually liked the entire album though I knew not one tune.
almost muzak, neither unpleasant nor memorable. smooth. 3
Seskimuusiikkis.LEGENDARY R&B STAR MAXWELL CONTINUES INCREDIBLE RUN OF LIVE ARENA SHOWS.. kiinnostavaa että albumin paskimmilla biiseillä kymmenkuntakertoin enemmän toistoja kuin oikeasti kiinnostavilla kappaleilla...populääribiisit jahtaa 90-luvun poppihuumaa.. kuin porkkana aasin nenän edessä...jahtaa jahtaa..jahtaa jahtaa...jaksaa vielä..jaksaa vielä.... vaikka ollaan kuitenkin lahjakasta aasista puhumassa... aasi on aasi.. whalecum
Maxwell’s Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite is seductive. The instrumentals are for sexua and erotic incitement, and nothing more. Yes, it it repetitive, and yes, it is not diverse, but damn the tunes are good. Maxwell’s voice is just too good almost everywhere. Highlights include Sumthin’ Sumthin’, …Till the Cops Come Knockin’, and The Urban Theme. All in all, Maxwell’s Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite is a good album. Best Song: The Urban Theme Worst Song: Whenever Wherever Whatever
Very smooth R&B
